Dawson Creek Elks help out hearing in children

The Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children was established for the organization to help complement local charity and fundraising efforts. One of the main focuses of the Elks and Royal Purple is speech and hearing in children and youth.

Local Dawson Creek Elks members recently donated $4,000 to

the Voss Family for speech therapy for young Dawson Creek resident Idabel Voss.

“The Elks and Royal Purple fund for children helps fund medical expenses for children with special needs in speech and hearing,” said Becotte.

“Speech and hearing on priority needs for children,” added Hunter.

Representatives from three South Peace Schools have combined forces and covered Canadian Neil Young’s Heart of Gold for the Canadian Music Class challenge 2022.

“Parkland Elementary, and a couple of my family members from Ecole Frank Ross and Devereux Elementary for this year’s CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge,” says teacher Carmen Kurjata.

Teachers choose from a list of 20 Canadian songs to arrange, teach, and shoot a video. We took a field trip on a -27 day to shoot our video

at the Art Gallery.

They received more than 500 videos this year, and ours is in the list of top 10 finalists for the MusiCounts Passion Prize.

“Parkland is in the running for a sweet prize ($5000 instruments!), and are proud to be in a national top 10 list,” says Kurjata.

The first place winner in their category (awarded to the most spirited, fun, and passionate performance) will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

DC family in ill-equipped travel trailer looks for hand up

The Clement Family moved to Dawson Creek with everything they owned this summer - with a promise of work hours that have never materialized.

Now the family of three along with two dogs is attempting to winterize their not-ready-forwinter travel trailer for the minus 30 northern British Columbia weather with sometimes only eight hours a week of work.

“For those that say get a job – we are looking,” says mom Christine. Dad Bob and six-year son Ryan made the week-long trip across Canada from St. Catharines, ON.

“It’s tough when you don’t know

the area and are new.”

The family has a pair of dogs and are finding rental accommodations tough. they have been hooked up with a handful of the service nonprofits in the region and lined up with apartment rental outfits.

When asked what their endgame is – it is to move into an apartment.

“We are more than paycheque to paycheque, we are day-to-day.”

Celebrating the gifts of friendship

Brenda Fleming Fehr

Five years ago, I decided to take For the longest time, I thought that friendship had to be an all-or-nothing kind of thing.

I believed that every friend had to be that person you could call up at 3 a.m. if you ever needed to.

But over the years I have learned to appreciate the gifts that come with many different forms of friendship.

I have one friend that I made many years ago while working at my very first retail job after I graduated from high school. I would never call her at 3 a.m., but she is a special friend just the same.

We have not seen each other in person for several years, but we send each other a Christmas card every year. And each year in our cards we write that we really should get together for coffee, but have not done that yet. I am always excited to see her Christmas card when it arrives in the mail.

I have another friend that I also met at work, but at a more recent job. Neither of us work at that same workplace anymore, but we keep in touch by phone. Every few weeks or so, this friend calls me just to say hello and see how I am doing. I do the same for him. He somehow seems to call just when I have been thinking of him or when my spirits could use a lift. He always has a joke to tell that makes me laugh.

I am definitely not a singer, but the other day I called this friend up to wish him a happy birthday and I sang my usual off-key rendition

of Happy Birthday. My friend thanked me for the birthday wishes and complimented me on my nice singing voice - proving what a true friend he really is.

I have another friend that I rarely speak to on the phone, but we communicate regularly by email. We update each other on what we have been up to, and often share stories of what we have been eating and what we are baking or cooking for special occasions.

I am fortunate to have a longtime family friend that I am sure I could call at 3 a.m. if I needed to. This friend encourages me to follow my dreams and loves to talk about books with me. She has comforted me and my family in times of sorrow, and other times has made me laugh until my stomach hurts.

She has a gift for seeing the bright side of things, and reminds me to appreciate the lessons learned even when something doesn’t go my way.

Some friends come and go in our lives, and sometimes, friends surprise us and come back.

I had a friend who shared a birthday close to mine, and for several years we used to go out to a restaurant together to celebrate our birthdays. We lost touch after she moved away to another province, but every year on my birthday, I would think of how I missed this friend and wonder how she was doing.

This past year, right around my birthday, my friend tracked me down. Turns out, we had both been

missing each other. Reconnecting has been a special gift.

I have been gifted, too, with so many lessons from the friendships I have been fortunate enough to make. I have learned how to listen more and talk a little less. I have learned to be more open, more patient and more forgiving, and to be a better friend. I have also learned that friends can help you get through the tough times and share the joy in the good times. And most of all, I have learned that each and every friend, in their own unique way, makes life a little better.

The News office in Dawson Creek has a collection of photos that we’ve published over the years to celebrate graduations, birthdays, engagements, etc. We invite you to come in & reclaim your forgotten property.

Office hours are 8:30am- 4:00pm, Mon-Fri, or call 250782-4888.

Carol was born on July 30, 1938, in Mission, BC. She lived many places throughout British Columbia and Alberta in her long life. As long as she was able, she was always ready for the next adventure. Carol hated for a car to be going somewhere without her, no matter how long or short the trip was, she was always up for it. She had an ongoing curiosity about everything, and her eclectic knowledge could lead to some interesting conversations. Carol loved to crochet, draw, and doodle, paint, and read (even doodling on things she was reading). In her better health days, she loved to bowl and hang out with her TOPS friends. She was a proud member of the Dawson Creek Symphonette and Choir for many years.

Carol will be sadly missed by her children: Kevin (Marilyn) Swaile, Charlene Roslinsky, Lori (Russ) Niemi, Mike (Bonnie) Swaile, Lou (Loni) Legault, Nancy (Scott) Haines, and JP (Tasha) Legault; grandchildren: Lee (Chelsea), Ali (David), Jordan (Jesse), Darby (Mitch), Kyla (Ken), Jenna (Jimi), Olivia, Addison, Zach (Isabelle), Lexi, Tanayea (Connor), Hannah, Bryxx, Kambrie, and Zailey; great-grandchildren: Tucker, Oaklei, Sebastian, Lincoln, Wrenly, Fletcher, Thomas, Bria, Emma, and Claire; sister Nancy (Rick) Go c; as well as nieces and nephews too numerous to name but, who held a very special place in her heart. As is evident by the number of stolen (saved) pictures on her iPad from Facebook.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. “To live in the hearts we leave behind, is to not die” ~Thomas Campbell Condolences may be sent by visiting www.oliversfuneralhome.com

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jerry Rude, a long-time resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at the age of 73 years. Jerry passed away while on route to his favorite winter home in Yuma, Arizona.

Jerry was born in 1949, the eldest child of Myron and Doris Rude. Siblings Lanny, Wade, Janice, Valerie and Blaine followed. The family moved to Fourth Creek in 1958. Jerry had skipped a few grades and in 1963 Jerry stayed with his aunts and uncles while attending Grade 10 in La Glace. The rest of the family moved back in 1964. Jerry, after completing Grade 11 & 12 in Sexsmith, attended the Vocational School for parts tech in Grande Prairie and started working for R ANGUS in 1967.

In 1970 Jerry married his sweetheart, Carol in Hythe, Alberta with reception & dance at the Park Hotel in Grande Prairie. They had an apartment for a short time in Grande Prairie, nding a house to rent later. Jerry continued working at R ANGUS with Carol working for Alberta Power. Around this time Jerry purchased a new car, a 240Z Datsun. As Jerry had a bit of a heavy foot, the 240Z was replaced with a Datsun Station Wagon.

In 1979, they introduced their rstborn, Ashley. In 1980 Jerry was transferred to R ANGUS in Peace River which brought an opportunity to sell the bigger equipment.

In 1981, Jerry & Carol’s second son, Aaron arrived.

Jerry & Carol’s spare time was spent with family & friends. There were many trips to One Island Lake, special memories of were made with time shared with Jim & Agnes, family and friends, as the cabin started to take shape. Jerry had a Datsun pickup with camper, he & Carol put on many miles, camping and travelling with friends & family.

The family grew with the arrival of their rst grandchild Kimberly in 2002. Jessi followed in 2004, Quin in 2006 and Connor in 2008. Jerry had a special relationship with each of his grandchildren, these four meant the world to him!

Jerry always believed in community. He supported and was involved in many branches of community service. He was a town councillor in Eaglesham and board member of the Peace River Planning Commission. In Dawson he was the Commissioner of the Dawson Creek Minor Hockey, President of the Junior Canucks, Midget Team Manager and President of the Northwest Junior Hockey League. Through their business with ESSO, they received many Recognition Awards and were presented with the Award of Excellence.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife Carol; sons Ashley and Aaron; grandchildren Kimberly, Jessica, Quin and Connor; siblings Lanny (Pat) Rude, Janice (Tim) Warr, Val (Gordon) Smith, Blaine (Fong) Rude; siblings in-law Jack (Kathy) Patterson, Don (Wendy) Patterson, Caty Patterson, Connie Patterson, Remona Patterson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends
