Dawson Creek Citizens on Patrol pairs with RCMP; looking for more members
Brown Managing Editor
Dawson Creek RCMP are pairing with Dawson Creek Citizens on Patrol – and are looking for new and returning faces.
The group has been ramping up meetings with the attempt to bring in more volunteers to the fold and have more of a presence in Dawson Creek.
In addition to RCMP officers, Art Seidel was on hand to bring some history and context from the South Peace Crime Association perspective to a Wednesday Dec 14 meeting held at KPAC.
“The South Peace Crime Association provides liability insurance to groups working with us,” adds COP lead and former RCMP member John Vetter.
Citizens on Patrol is looking for a patrol coordinator to start getting some scheduled feet on the ground.
“It’s time to get the community on board. We have been in operation for 30 plus years,” says Vetter.
Cst. Jeremiah Budd said it was important for COP and RCMP to work together – and build relationships with officers on duty.
“Number of volunteers are less important compared to time put in,” adds Budd. COP and the local RCMP are looking for a new cell phone number for immediate contact ability with the detachment.
The group’s next meeting will be January 11 – and will be held at the RCMP detachment.
The group will also be Christmas wrapping presents from Dec 17 to 24 at the Dawson Creek Mall – and are looking for volunteers.

Bernier picks up Shadow Minister for Forests portfolio
BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon has named his shadow cabinets and Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier is in the mix – named the Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Forests.
“It is an interesting and exciting role for this region,” he said to the Dawson Creek Mirror on Monday.
He said it was about holding the government to account while allowing him to focus on a key aspect of the region.
“Things like fibre shortage and frequent mill closures and curtailments there is uncertainty and this portfolio allows me to focus on the rural, wildlife, permits, and bringing some certainly to the sector, while on the ground and in the area.”
Bernier expects discussion about old growth debates on coast and bringing more attention to
timber, hunting, back country access and cariboo issues.
“Everyone knows the attention we brought to that aspect it is time to bring forestry to the top of pile, and bring attention to it.”

eNewsletter available for North Peace Leisure Pool updates
During the latest shutdown of the North Peace Leisure Pool in December, contractors discovered a leaking valve within the hot tub infrastructure. While a long and complex list of repairs has been made at the facility this year, the latest valve discovery will add another 6 to 8 week delay to the efforts on the hot tub.
The hot tub repairs prompted the Peace River Regional District and the City of Fort St. John to collaborate on strategies to keep residents and patrons informed about the operational updates at the facility.
The North Peace Leisure Pool Updates eNewsletter is now available for digital subscription, with the next release scheduled for February 1, 2023. All subscribers will receive the latest news about maintenance, closures and other operational updates. To sign up for the eNewsletter, scan the QR code.

LANGEVIN: the magic of Christmas
It seems that the marketing and entertainment industries like to capitalize on this expression, and growing up, I could never figure it out. The typical emphases around Christmas are picturesque lights, Christmas trees, gorgeous decorations, gifts, celebrations, and Santa. Other themes that are fairly popular around Christmas are Christmas Romances.
I suppose that’s because Christmas is considered to be a time of love. Mind you, two of my favorite Christmas movies which I watch every year, among others, are ‘Earnest Saves Christmas, and ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas.’ To me, neither seems to quite fit the popular trend, especially the Charlie Brown Christmas.
I personally can most readily identify with the Charlie Brown Christmas because he finds the commercialism frustrating, especially seeing how his dog Snoopy was totally caught up into it.
Since I was a kid I have always loved this movie, but as a youngster I couldn’t understand what the answer was regarding the true meaning of
Christmas. When Linus gets up on stage and quotes the Bible story about the birth of Jesus Christ, I thought, “Well that’s nice, but how does that answer the question?” Now as an adult I realize that that is the answer to the question of the true meaning of Christmas.
All the gifts, decorations, celebrations, and so on, as wonderful as they are, do not actually express the true meaning of Christmas, nor are they able to produce ‘THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS.’ In ‘Earnest Saves Christmas,’ right at the beginning he opens up the glove compartment of his taxi, and the camera focuses on a bold sticker he has on its door which reads – KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS.
During the Christmases of old that I remember, the air was filled with the presence and peace of Jesus Christ. People everywhere were friendly and wishing neighbors, friends, and strangers “Merry Christmas!”- and actually speaking it comfortably. That Presence of the Lord which filled the air cannot be manufactured nor duplicated, especially by commercialism. Jesus truly is the REASON FOR THE SEASON. He is the Gift of all gifts which God has given to the whole world. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His
only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
The angels announced His birth to shepherds on that night, and we continue to announce Him to this day. So actually, it isn’t about magic, it was/is something miraculous. The birth of Jesus Christ is the true meaning of Christmas and the ultimate reason for celebrating.
With that in place, having either plenty, or little, we can genuinely enjoy all the wonders of Christmas. Let us honor Him, and love one another in deed and in truth as He commanded us to. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Celebrating the gift of the Christmas letter
Brenda Fleming Fehr
One of my favourite things about the holiday season has always been the Christmas letter.
Even as a child, I loved reading the letters that were sometimes tucked inside the Christmas cards my family would receive in the mail. Whenever we visited relatives, I wanted to read the letters that had been included in their Christmas cards, too.
Some of the letters were handwritten on plain paper, while others were printed from a computer onto colourful holiday-themed note paper.
Even if I didn’t know the people who had sent the letters, I still found their words fascinating. Some would celebrate the achievements of their children or grandchildren - a graduation milestone or a new job. Others wrote about a special trip they had taken. Some would write about welcoming a new baby into the family.
There were also the letters that shared news of a difficult year that had included illness or the loss of a family member or beloved pet. Those letters always stayed with me long after I read them. I hoped that by sharing it, the sorrow the writer was feeling had been lightened a little.
Whatever the year had brought the writers of the letters, each one ended with a positive note, wishing the person they had sent it to a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
In addition to the longer Christmas letters, I also appreciated the little mini letters - a few lines written inside a Christmas card or on the back of a family Christmas photo. The letters didn’t have to be long to be meaningful.
I still remember a holiday season when I was in my early 20s and living in my first apartment. I saw a Christmas postcard that someone had placed near the apartment mailboxes for the mail carrier to take back, because the person it was sent to did not live there anymore.
The person who had sent the postcard wrote that it had been a very challenging year for their family, but they were hopeful because they knew their faith would carry them through. They ended their note with special wishes for a joyful Christmas and New Year.
I have never forgotten the uplifting words on that little postcard and how without knowing it, the writer brightened my holiday season that year.
These days, the Christmas letter can be sent in so many different forms, but what I have learned is that regardless of its form, it’s special because of the way it brings us together.
The Christmas letter is a yearly reminder that wherever we are, and whatever is happening in our lives, there’s always someone out there who cares about us.

William Rocky Eklund, born April 11, 1952 in Phillipsburg, Kansas to Marjorie Jean and Bertil Henry Eklund, and brother Ricky passed away into heaven to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 22, 2022 in his home with his loving wife by his side, 70 years later, north of Rolla, B.C.
He grew up on the family farm in Kansas, and graduated from Hartford High School, in 1970 where he played football, basketball and track. Rocky attended College of Emporia where he played on a football scholarship, then Emporia State University (ESU) where he met and married Becky Poovey on May 19,1974 in the Christian Church in Oxford, Kansas her home town. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of General Studies 1979 from ESU, starting his teaching career at Overbrook Middle School in 1980 teaching Math.
The Call of the Peace brought Rocky, Becky and Colleen to McTavish Road north of the Peace River in British Columbia, Canada where they emigrated in 1981. He raised cattle, and crops as he also taught math, science, grade 4 at Clearview Elementary Junior Secondary. Later he taught at North Peace Secondary School. Lee completed the Eklund family in 1986.
They moved to the North Rolla farm on Road 213 in 1995 as Rocky became a full time farmer. Rocky and Lee raised buffalo for a short time then became a grain farming team making decisions as they grew the farm business which is a very successful one.
He enjoyed family life as a very loving husband and father. Rocky was an avid fisherman, hunter, snowmobiler, backpacker, camper, scuba diver, carpenter, canoer and a white belt in Karate. He shared and passed on his love for the outdoors with his family and many friends. His sense of humor and funny jokes were contagious.
He attended the Rolla Bible Baptist Church in Rolla, BC Canada.
He leaves behind Becky his wife of 48 years, children Colleen and her husband Matt George of Priest River, Idaho, Lee and Gabrielle Roy. He was also the proud grandfather to Ashly Kraenzel and her husband Taylor of New England, North Dakota and Ty George of Bremerton, Washington.
Rocky’s celebration of Life was held at the Rolla Bible Baptist Church and burial followed at the Rolla Cemetery on December 1, 2022.
The Eklund family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Prince George Cancer Clinic, Dawson Creek Hospital Staff, many ER doctors from all over the country, and Nordlys Clinic for their professional care and their personal compassion.
For those so wishing, donations may be made in memory of

If you are thinking about changing careers, you probably should wait until the holidays are over. No one’s mind is on the job these days, so waiting is the wiser move.
GEMINI – MAY 22/JUN 21
Consider all sides of a situation before you offer your opinion, Gemini. This way you have the facts and will not inadvertently alienate someone.
CANCER – JUN 22/JUL 22
When someone turns to you for help, you do not hesitate to do all that you can, Cancer. Just be sure you do not to overwork yourself. Take on only what you can manage.

LIBRA – SEPT 23/OCT 23
You’ve been placed in a new role and you’re loving every minute of it, Libra. Enjoy the moments while they last. This may be what you’re meant to do.
SCORPIO – OCT 24/NOV 22
Scorpio, you might want to take it easy and stick close to home for the time being. You need to regroup and focus anew. You can do that more easily without distractions.
SAGITTARIUS – NOV 23/DEC 21
Sagittarius, your to-do list might be growing longer, but tackle one thing at a time rather than getting overwhelmed. Reach out to a loved one for assistance.
CAPRICORN – DEC 22/JAN 20
Success is within reach, Capricorn. Do not be surprised if others are a bit jealous of your accomplishments and want to pull you down. Ignore the naysayers.
