It was a surprise party 100 years in the making last week.

The Dawson Creek community gathered at the Seniors’s Hall Saturday to celebrate the 100th birthday of Myrtle Esther Grove.

Originally from Wilkie, SK, Myrtle moved to Dawson Creek when she was a child and has lived here most of her life - currently a resident at Rotary Manor.

Moberly Lake resident picks up $960K online slots win

Tears and laughter from Carrie Paquette and her family created quite a bit of commotion in the store after she received the life-changing call from BCLC confirming she had won a major slots jackpot of $961,022.85.

The night before, Paquette played the province’s gambling website and received the notification that she had won the game’s progressive jackpot. Thinking it was a technical issue, she played another round and went to bed. When BCLC called her at the store the next day, she hadn’t expected to hear the win was real.

“My stomach dropped!” said Paquette.

“My husband kept shushing me as I was being loud. He didn’t believe it. He

thought it was a scam call and he was a little embarrassed.”

Despite her husband’s initial hesitation, he came around, and together they went to find Paquette’s mother and sister in the store to share their excitement. Later, they had a little celebration at home and thought about what might come next.

Some school and some sun, is what’s in the cards for Paquette and family with the win.

“With this win, I will be able to go back to school full-time without having to work,” said Paquette. “And I told my family to get their passports so we can go on vacation together!”

RCMP attended a Dawson Creek residence on Saturday in the 1200 Block of 118 Ave., where two people were located dead.

Witnesses on scene said to the Dawson Creek Mirror there were two deaths; and others say they may have been related to a pair of missing persons noted by the RCMP to be missing earlier this week.

RCMP say in a press release their investigation is active and ongoing and there is no further information available at this time, according to Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon of the BC

RCMP Major Crime Program.

Area residents who spoke to the Dawson Creek Mirror on the weekend note the pair were reported missing earlier in the week.

RCMP confirm while no arrests have yet been made, police continue to gather evidence and progress the investigation forward.

We urge any individual with information to come forward to the RCMP, said Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon of the BC RCMP MCS.

SURE SHOTS:

photographers place second in Canadian Geographic contest

Two B.C. photographers are getting high praise for their work.

Canadian Geographic has announced the winners of the Canadian Photos of the Year competition and two people from British Columbia took home second place.

More than 6,400 entries were submitted and just 12 ‘outstanding’ images were honoured for their originality, technical skill and visual impact.

Alexandra Pope, editor-in-chief at Canadian Geographic, says great photography comes down to a combination of location, timing and skill.

“Each of the winning images tells a compelling story and is a testament to the talent and passion of our photographic community,” says Pope.

There were four categories: epic landscapes; wildlife in action; city life; and weather, seasons and sky.

Brandon Broderick of Tumbler Ridge, B.C. won runner-up in the epic landscapes category and fellow B.C. resident Gabor Dosa of Surrey also won runner-up for his city life photograph.

“I was happy when I found out I was a finalist, and even happier when I found out I placed as a runner up in the Epic Landscapes category! It’s an honour to be included alongside such talented photographers,” says Broderick.

The prestigious Canadian Photographer of the Year was awarded to Ontario photographer Alan Poelman.

“Poelman’s wildlife and landscape photography stood out among the submissions for its depth, quality and range. A portrait of a lynx staring straight at the camera was a particular favourite of the judges,” says a statement from the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.

Poelman described how he was at a lake he previously visited as a kid and spotted the lynx.

“I have never been as excited about a photo as I was for the lynx encounter,” he says.

The winning images will all be published in Canadian Geographic’s March/April issue.

Poelman received a $5,000 grand prize.

Northern Health will be sending out personalized letters to the parents and guardians of school age children, regarding their current vaccination status.

The sealed, confidential letters will include which vaccinations the student has received and which vaccines they appear to be missing, according to Northern Health’s records.

“Students will be offered the opportunity to catch up on vaccines that are missing, and/or to update their vaccination record,” Northern Health chief medical health officer Dr. Jong Kim wrote in a letter to parents on Monday.

“Letters will not be sent to who are up-to-date with all recommended immunizations, nor to students in Grades 6 and 9, as the records of students in those grades were reviewed earlier in the school year and communications from Northern Health were sent at that time.”

FamilyLiteracyDay Jan27

Family literacy week is here!

January 22 to 28 brings the literal literacy out with Family Literacy week.

This year’s theme is all about numbers with ‘Make it Count, play, sort and measure’.

There is also a photo contest tied to this year’s week – both for classes and individuals. Send your reading pics and photos to contest@decoda.ca.

Deadline is Jan. 29 to submit.

Literacy in British Columbia

Were you aware that around 40% of adults in British Columbia do not have the literacy skills they need to fully participate and succeed in today’s world?

Do you know how low literacy

affects crime rates, voter rates, economic productivity, and personal health and well-being? Literacy is an issue that touches all aspects of our lives.

Make it count during BC Family Literacy Week 2023

The Province of British Columbia has proclaimed Family Literacy Week (January 22-29, 2023) in British Columbia.

Families are encouraged to celebrate by reading books, playing games, cooking or attending local events together.

“Parents and caregivers play a vital role in child development, which includes building literacy skills,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Whether they follow a recipe, read a book or attend a literacy event together, when families learn together, they grow together. This can create lifelong opportunities.”

Each year, the Province provides more than $2 million in support of community literacy to Decoda Literacy Solutions, a non-profit organization that uses this funding to support the coordination of community literacy services and initiatives in B.C., including Family Literacy Week.

Each year, government also contributes $500,000 to the

The week includes ABC Life Literacy Canada’s Family Literacy Day, celebrated nationally each year on January 27.

This year’s Family Literacy Week theme is “Make it Count!” It focuses on how numbers and math connect with daily activities.

“Children start using math the moment they start exploring the world. Sorting, counting and measuring are ways of playing with math,” says Sandra Lee, Executive Director of Decoda Literacy Solutions, BC’s provincial literacy organization. “Doing puzzles, playing board games, singing counting songs, saying counting rhymes and cooking with children help to strengthen connections and math skills.”

Food Allergies –To Itch or not to Itch

Food allergies are a familiar problem for many people. They can result in a range of clinical outcomes, from developing a rash and numbing of the mouth, all the way to severe life-threatening anaphylactic reactions. The cause of food allergies in humans is multi-faceted – but we know that certain genetic and environmental factors play various roles in how our bodies react to certain food allergens.

What may be a bit surprising to some is that our pets can and do experience and develop food allergies in similar ways to humans. Food allergies in pets can cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea, as well as itchy skin and rashes. Severe anaphylactic reactions from food allergens are thankfully very rare in pets. We can begin to understand how to manage food allergies in our pets by recognizing the similarities in allergy management between us and our pets.

What are Food Allergies?

Food allergies are a group of hypersensitivity reactions, specifically, type 1 hypersensitivity reactions. These hypersensitivity reactions are mediated by our own immune systems’ over-reaction to an otherwise harmless food protein or antigen (Beef, Lamb, Chicken, Veal etc.). At any point in our lives, but far more often when we are young, our bodies are processing and breaking down various food antigens without issue. However, in some instances, our body’s immune system may falsely recognize a food antigen we’ve consumed as harmful and become “sensitized” to that food antigen. Sensitization simply means our body has become primed to react to certain food antigens as if they were harmful to us. This means that food allergies generally occur only after the body becomes sensitized to a certain food antigen. When puppies and kittens are below one year of age, their bodies are breaking down and processing many new food protein antigens for the first time. In rare instances, a young dog or cat may become sensitized to a protein ingredient (Lamb, Beef, Chicken etc.) in their food, or rarely, a pet may be born pre-sensitized to one of these proteins. Also, our pets may become sensitized during adulthood to a food they’ve been eating for years. When sensitization occurs, our pets may develop signs of an allergy when fed the same food they’ve developed a sensitivity to. These signs generally present as diarrhea, rashes in between the toes and in the ears, and sometimes rashes all over the body. Ear and skin infections can also be a very common occurrence in dogs or cats experiencing chronic food allergy reactions.

Committed to friendly, quality care

Doesyourpethavebadbreath?

This can be an indication of periodontal disease which can lead to serious problems in your pet’s mouth and in their overall health. Your veterinarian can evaluate your pet’s mouth and give you recommendations for treatments and at home care to help control or prevent periodontal disease

Calltheclinictofind outaboutpromotions availableduringthe monthofFebruary!

How can we Manage Food Allergies in our Pets?

If our pets are going to develop a food allergy, it is often before one year of age, but can sometimes occur at any age, and even after many years of our pets eating the same foods. If you notice that your pet appears to be experiencing signs consistent with a food allergy reaction, it is a good idea to let your veterinarian know. A veterinarian will require a detailed history of the foods and treats your pet eats, as well as whether certain foods resulted in more severe clinical signs associated with food allergy reactions. After your veterinarian collects a history, they will usually discuss several treatment options to either support diagnosis of a food allergy, or potentially treat the symptoms. One of the first recommendations they may make is to trial an alternate pet food for a few months. This alternate food will contain a “novel” food protein antigen (e.g., chicken to veal) that your pet has likely not been sensitized to and thus should hopefully not elicit a food allergy reaction. If a novel protein diet does not work, the next diet option is a “hydrolyzed diet” whereby the food protein antigens have been broken down to such small sizes that your pet’s body will theoretically not be able to recognize the common food protein antigens. Additionally, your veterinarian will ask that your pet stops receiving treats (both human foods and dog treats) for the duration of the food trial until the cause of the food allergy is determined.

How can we make our Pets more Comfortable?

Seeing our dogs itch and scratch is never a fun thing to witness. Itching is a very relatable feeling for us, and it is one of the clearest signs our pets are uncomfortable. While starting food trials with novel or hydrolyzed diets, your pet may still be experiencing itchiness and discomfort. Thankfully there are several medications available to alleviate itch in dogs and cats while the food trial is run. Ask your veterinarian if your pet is eligible for one of these medications. Ultimately, food allergy diagnosis can be a slow process that requires patience to find the true culprit behind your pet’s allergy.

May9,1936–September23,2022

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Shirley Rodeghiero, our loving and devoted grandmother, mother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, on September 23, 2022, at the age of 86 years.

Shirley was the first of 5 children born to Diedrich (Slim) and Blanche (Bianca) Hiebert. She was born in St. Joseph’s Hospital on May 9th, 1936. The family settled in the South Dawson community close to Shirley’s grandparents

Giuseppina (Josephine) and Arduino (Joe) Dagasso. She grew up along with her four brothers – Don, Joe, Jerry, and later Renald.

She fell in love and married Guido Rodeghiero on Dec 23, 1967. After marrying Guido, she threw her energies into raising her two daughters, Joanne and Stella, additionally acting as a caregiver for her five grandchildren. Opening her home to all, her kitchen was never closed, and became a memorable space for family and friends over the years.

Shirley took great pride in being efficient and helping others in her work at Sears’, as a receptionist at the hospital, and later at Wright’s Cold Storage. She liked to keep her hands busy with knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was sweet and caring and had special food traditions that she loved sharing. Over the years, she was part of the Women’s Institute and contributed to the Hospital Auxiliary. Her Catholic Church family was important to her and would always drive and meet others for services and visits.

Shirley is survived by her brother Jerry Hiebert, her two daughters and their husbands, Joanne (Greg) Dueck and Stella (Brentt) Ford. She is the adored grandmother of Kieran, Garret & Jarvis Dueck, and Jaden & Giana Ford.

Want some more bang for your buck?

It’s a week for love and you have all of the resources available to take advantage and explore your feelings, Taurus. Work things out in your head before taking action.

GEMINI – MAY 22/JUN 21

Gemini, currently you are playing a much smaller role at work than you would like. It is not that you aren’t capable, but it’s a matter of paying your dues before taking the next step.

CANCER – JUN 22/JUL 22

Cancer, don’t box yourself in with a strict to-do list and schedule. You need a little more wiggle room to explore your creativity and what makes you happy.

LEO – JUL 23/AUG 23

Your open and outgoing nature may lead many people to think they know all about you, Leo. Instead, you can be quite a mysterious person. Show others only what you want.

VIRGO – AUG 24/SEPT 22

Believing someone is flawless can set you up for disappointment when you realize no one can live up to that standard, Virgo. Be realistic when assessing partners or other people.

LIBRA – SEPT 23/OCT 23

Being available to other people is admirable, Libra. Make sure this is not at the expense of your own well-being. You may need to dial back and prioritize your own needs.

SCORPIO – OCT 24/NOV 22

Living in your comfort zone may lead to missed opportunities, Scorpio. You may need to let your risk-taking side show this week. Enjoy the ride.

SAGITTARIUS – NOV 23/DEC 21

You might start to notice you are losing some traction in your love life, Sagittarius. Figure out a way to talk and spend more time together in the days ahead.

CAPRICORN – DEC 22/JAN 20

You may believe you can think your way out of a situation this week, Capricorn. But sometimes logic just doesn’t cut it. You may have to use your heart to get to the root.

AQUARIUS – JAN 21/FEB 18

Take a second look at your talents and your abilities, Aquarius. You may have been selling yourself short for some time. But you can accomplish anything with some effort.
