Bulterys House opens doors for regional pregnancy support

Dale Bumstead thanked many for support and helping finish the Bulterys House.

The project is a long gestating refurbishment of the former of Dr. Octaaf Bulterys into a support home for families and to provide additional accommodations to health care professionals in Dawson Creek and the Peace Region.

Just prior to COVID-19, the South Peace Health Services Society partnered with the Lake View Credit Union.

“When the South Peace Health Services Society brought this project to our attention, our board and staff were eager to be involved,” said Lori Archibald, CEO of Lake View Credit Union at the time.

In June of 2020 organizers noted the project had stalled and was just over 70 percent completed.

“What we have been able to do is partner with businesses who care about the community,” said chair of the South Peace Health Services Society Bumstead, adding the building will be managed by Dawson Creek Society for Creative Living staff.

“We have an operating plan and agreement in place,” said Bumstead adding support has been incoming and ongoing from throughout the Peace region, from the PRRD who helped pay off the group’s mortgage/loan, and the Lions Club of Tumbler Ridge who fundraised $10K for the project.

May

PRRD chair Leonard Hiebert said the support made sense.

“For us, removing the mortgage was a no brainer,” he said.

Bumstead said the facility is now open for business.

The

Mandatory vaccination policy rescinded for provincial public servants

As of April 3, 2023, BC Public Service employees will no longer be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

The decision to rescind the policy was made based on the high level of vaccination among public-service employees and the current state of the pandemic.

More than 98% of employees met the requirement, which helped keep everyone safe.

Rescinding the vaccination policy means a small number of employees on administrative leave due to non-compliance will be provided the opportunity to return to the workplace. The Public Service Agency has provided direction to ministries and will work with supervisors to support a smooth transition.

This change also means that contractors and other non-employees do not need to be vaccinated to enter

BC Public Service workplaces.

While the public service is removing its policy, people are still required to be vaccinated if they work

in settings with provincial health officer orders or other vaccination requirements.

Vaccine mandates remain in highest-risk settings where the most vulnerable live and are cared for. This includes facilities in the healthcare system.

The vaccination requirement for public-service employees, introduced in November 2021, was always intended as a temporary measure to help protect employees and the people they serve.

While it is now possible to remove this policy, the pandemic is not over and the Public Service Agency continues to encourage all BC Public Service employees to remain up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations, including booster doses.

The Mirror’s serial comic strip for 2023 is War on Crime!

The

The strip launched on May 18, 1936 appearing in 45 newspapers. It was written by crime reporter Rex Collier, who was a personal friend of Hoover. The illustrations were initially provided by Kemp Sterrett who after a year was replaced by Jimmy Thompson.

All the stories featured in the War on Crime were real-life cases,

and personally vetted by Hoover. The strip chronicled the demise of such infamous characters as: Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson and John Dillinger.

War on Crime was conceived, at least in part, by FBI director Edgar J. Hoover, who intended it as a public relations exercise. It was designed to counteract the current portrayals of

G-men as lone mavericks. Instead, the strip showed the FBI as a formidable and well-oiled organization that was under the direct control of the director.

The strip finished its run on January 22, 1938.

Check it out. On your right.

Mile Zero gymnasts bound for Provincials

Six Mile Zero gymnasts are headed to the BC Championships in Surrey at the end of March.

The BC Championships are held each spring for artistic, trampoline and compulsory gymnastics. The events are generally held in April, in various communities throughout the province.

Hundreds of male and female gymnasts will come from all areas of BC to compete over three days in various Canadian Gymnastic Pathways.

The BC Championships are the largest and most prestigious annual gymnastics events in the province. Throughout the course of these competitions, athletes compete for the title of Provincial Champion.

Mile Zero athletes will be competing as part of the Canadian Competitive Program (CCP) that has 10 levels. This year, Mile Zero has one athlete competing at level 6, four competing at level 7, and one athlete competing at level 8. Sawyer Raaen, (lvl 6) the youngest member of the group, will be participating for the very first time, while this will be the second inperson provincials for the others.

Mile Zero is happy to have head coach Brittany Cline attending with the team this year following a parental leave in 2022. Assistant coach Tennyson Swejda is participating for the second time as both coach & athlete.

Coaches notes all the returning girls have performed strongly in the past, with Aylah Clavier and Ellie McNair being awarded for their vault and floor performances last year, while Marissa Kuenzl and Tennyson Swejda have both won medals at previous championships.

On the GO wherever you GO

You'll need:

• All the members of your family

• A calendar showing one month

• A piece of 8.5 x 11 paper made into a grid Each family member’s name should be listed vertically, and the days of the week going across featuring one warm-up day and seven game days. Start with Sunday as the warm-up day.

• A pencil or pen

• A timer

Handy Tip:

Still stumped on how to take the fastest shower and save the most water you can manage? Try this trick! Use the water to:

a) only wet yourself for the soap

b) to rinse the soap off. Now there’s a trick indeed!

“Our communities are growing and this puts more pressure on community centres, parks and swimming pools that families rely on,” Premier David Eby said in a statement, calling it “the single largest provincial investment in communities in B.C.’s history.”

The money is coming from this year’s projected budget surplus of almost $6 billion, according to the province, and funding will be granted for projects such recreation facilities, parks, water treatment plants, and other community infrastructure “to meet the demands of unprecedented population growth.”

“The new Growing Communities Fund will help local communities get building,” said Eby. “Growing communities need our support and this funding will make a big difference for everyone.”

Experiment 2

Shortest Shower in the World Game!

Steps:

5min

1. It’s Sunday! Warm-up day. Have each family member take a “usual” shower. Record their “usual” time on the grid. This way, everyone can see how they have shortened their times!

2. It’s Monday. Day One of Seven. Pick one family member to be the timekeeper for the day. Then, take turns trying to take the fastest shower with the stopwatch. Record each person’s time for the day on the 8.5 x 11 grid, and record the day’s winner and their time on the calendar!

3. It’s Tuesday! Repeat-this time, with a different family member being the timekeeper.

4. It’s Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday! Repeat!

5. Discuss. Now that they’ve had a warm-up day and it’s been one week, how does everyone in the family feel about these shorter showers? What’s their favourite part about it? Least favourite? What will they do differently next week? What will they do the same next week? How much has each person improved their time? What’s the shortest shower time of all?

Conclusion & What’s Next?:

6. Continue through the rest of the month! Eventually, the habit will take hold and you will be Super Energy Savers!!!

Bolin to step down as BC Conservative leader

Fort St. John city councillor Trevor Bolin will be stepping down from his role as leader of the provincial Conservative party in B.C.

In a statement, Bolin said he would like to spend more time with family, and noted the party’s membership has doubled under his nearly four year tenure.

“Today marks three years and ten months since I was fortunate enough to be named the leader of BC’s Conservatives,” he said in a statement.

MARCH

Natalia has used some of her route money by a piano – while activities outside of school include music and graphic design work.

Thanks for helping us get the news out each week!

Bolin has been appointed interim leader until a leadership election is held, the party last week.

“Recently, I have asked the executive to appoint me the interim leader of the party, and I will officially step into that role today,” Bolin said. “This opens the path for the party to hold a leadership nomination and election that I am excited to be able to assist in from

a committee perspective. “A lot of our lives have changed in the last few years, and with the loss of my parents, I have decided my family needs to come first at this time.”

Rules and procedures of the leadership race will be announced in the coming weeks, the party said.

Coughing cats- what is feline asthma?

Asthma is a relatively common airway condition in our feline friends, similar to human asthma where the airways become inflammed and airflow to the lungs is restricted. This reduction in airflow to the lungs prevents the proper exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in their lungs, and if it’s significant enough it can be an emergency because your cat may not be getting enough oxygen. This article will go over what feline asthma can look like in your cat, how your vet diagnoses it, and treatment options your vet might offer you. What is it? Feline asthma is an inflammation of the airways. This means that the airways can be extra reactive to stress or irritants and/or the flow of air through the windpipe and branches of it can be reduced. What does it look like? One of the signs of asthma in cats is coughing. Sometimes people just think their cat has been coughing up hairballs for months, when really, they have an irritation in their lungs causing coughing. The coughing can be episodic, not constant. Because cats are masters of disguise, they can have asthma but not show obvious signs like coughing or breathing with lots of effort. They may just be less active or acting “off”.

Cats can also show more obvious signs of distressed breathing. Increased effort when breathing, even wheezing and open mouth breathing. Normally cats breath quietly and we don’t really notice them taking big breaths, but cats with asthma will actively push their belly in while exhaling because it takes more effort to breath out than normal. If they are in very severe respiratory distress and unable to get enough oxygen, your cat might also have a blue-tinged tongue indicating lack of oxygenation of the blood*.

asthma, we know that certain breeds are predisposed (Siamese and Himalayan), so there might be a genetic component. Cats that have a history of bronchitis (inflammation of the airways) from trauma or developmental problems can also predispose cats to asthma. Obesity can also predispose cats to asthma. It is important to note that there are many environmental factors that can contribute to feline asthma such as dust in dirty carpets, cigarette smoke (even just on your clothes), chemicals, pollen, strong perfumes, and dusty cat litter. Smoke from forest fires and high temperatures during the summer can also provoke respiratory problems like asthma. Reducing these triggers by having things like dustless litter, not smoking, and replacing the air filters in your home can make a big difference. Also, regular activity and playtimes are important manage their overall stress and help prevent obesity (both predispose to asthma).

prescribe steroids to help suppress the inflammation in the lungs They may also prescribe a bronchodilator to help open up the airways during episodes of asthma. Steroids can be administered orally, injectable or through an inhaler. If you are using an inhaler for your cat, they need a special type with a spacer chamber because we cannot instruct them to breathe in, like with people using inhalers. The spacer chamber holds the aerosolized medicine until the cat breathes it in.

*Please note: breathing with their mouths open, abdominal effort when breathing, and/or a blue tongue indicate an emergency and it is vital to get your cat seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible!

How does the vet diagnose it? Your vet will perform a physical exam on your cat and listen well to its heart and lungs with their stethoscope. Something we listen for are “wheezes” over the lung fields that could indicate reduction in airflow in the branches of the windpipe. They might recommend x-rays of the chest, which can sometimes show thickened airways in asthmatic cats. Definitive diagnosis is made with airway sampling, but often vets will rule out other causes of respiratory distress and then trial medications if they have a strong suspicion of asthma.

How can we treat it? Your vet will likely

Birth Announcements!

Join a long standing tradition by placing your baby announcement in the local newspaper!

You are hereby authorized to publish the following birth announcement in the Dawson Creek Mirror newspaper. The Announcement INCLUDES a photo at NO Charge if you wish. Email photo to compose@dcdn.ca or send it in online: https://www.dawsoncreekmirror.ca/baby-photos

Looking back almost 25 years - Scream 3 is from the era that is has a Jay and Silent Bob cameo, and a crossover with the View Askew Universe.

Scream 4 picks up some decade later, while 5, released just last year was another reload in the era of reloads and reboots.

Six takes Ghostface, like Jason before him, to the big city. Gone are the one or two house party sets, and Scream VI is more of the Hollywood style of the third installment.

This one is economical, brings back characters from the original film as well as 3 and 5, and again ties more psychotic killers into people attached to Woodsboro.

There are no plot giveaways as there are in 2 – the deaths are mid gruesome as you can get for for a Scream flick, and there are plenty of red herrings here to keep things interesting.

Much like Saw; the franchise is folding in on itself a bit – where there are only so many characters to bring back – and new characters seem to be echoes of previous ones from the original run of films.

Scream VI opens in Dawson Creek this week.

Kimberly “Kim”Wellington, 85, entered into eternal peace on Sunday, August 15, 2022, at the Your City Hospice and Palliative Care Centre. Kim was born on July 10, 1927, daughter of the late Jacob and Lynn Taylor. She graduated from Name of High School in 1944 and worked for the City of Yourtown as a VP of operations for the board. She married the late Martin Wellington in March 1951 and together they owned the Wellington Corner Store in Yourtown. Survivors include her three sons and daughters-in-law, and her grandchildren John, Jeff, Jay, Melissa, Susan, Debra, Simon and Nicholas.

In Loving Memory Of Al len Newby

1944 ~ 2023

Allen Raymond Newby of Dawson Creek, British Columbia died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023. He was 78 years old.

Al was born on June 8th, 1944, in Dawson Creek to Raymond and Helen Newby. Al attended South Peace Secondary School and spent his working life at CJDC TV, retiring as station operations manager.

Al was an outdoorsman, hockey coach, stock car racer, local TV producer, and more. But to those who knew him best, Al was a loving father to his children and ‘uncle’ to his family and those around him.

Al is survived by Marilyn Newby, his wife of 55 years; his two sons Dallas and Derek; and his sister Darlene Roberts of Kelowna, BC.

Al was fond of reminding us that death was part of life and wanted to be remembered but not mourned. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.

Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium

Ratatouille

Servings: 6

Ingredients

• 4 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 onion, finely chopped

• 5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped

• 1 orange bell pepper, finely diced

• 1 yellow bell pepper, finely diced

• 1 can of diced tomatoes

• 10 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped

• 2 yellow zucchinis, cut into thin slices

• 2 green zucchinis, cut into thin slices

• 2 eggplants, cut into thin slices

• 4 Roma tomatoes, cut into thin slices

• 2 tablespoons fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped

• 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, finely chopped

• 2 teaspoons fresh oregano, finely chopped

• Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 375 F. In a large oven-safe pan, sauté the onion and 4 cloves of garlic in half the olive oil. When the onion is translucent, add the peppers and continue cooking for about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the diced tomatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes, crushing the tomatoes with the back of a wooden spoon to create a smooth sauce. Season the sauce with half the basil.

2. In the same pan, lay the vegetable slices flat, alternating to create a spiral.

3. Coat them with remaining olive oil, basil, last garlic clove, parsley, thyme and oregano. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Cover the pan with a lid or aluminum foil. Place in the oven for 40 minutes, then uncover and continue cooking for another 20 minutes.

PRRD brings back free information sessions and workshops through the Grant Writer Services program

In partnership with Clear Course Consulting, the PRRD is offering four free grant writing opportunities for community groups in the Peace region.

An Introduction to Grant Writing information session is available on Wednesday, April 19 (9am to 10:30am) and Thursday, April 20 (7pm to 8:30pm). In this session, participants will learn about how grants work, understanding types of funders and grants, searching for grants, ensuring projects are grant-ready and about the PRRD’s Grant Writing Services program.

A How to Write a Successful Grant Application workshop is available from 9am to 12pm on Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22. In this workshop, participants will receive a high-level overview of how grants work, understanding application guidelines, how to demonstrate a need for funding, knowing which documents to submit with an application and building a budget.

The Grant Writer Services program has connected directly with non-profits in the community through the information sessions and workshops since 2021, and the events have grown in popularity with each year. Residents are encouraged to secure a spot by registering early by visiting prrd.bc.ca/services/grants or by calling 250-784-3200.

Director Kealy set to connect with residents at community meeting in Rose Prairie

The newly elected Director of Electoral Area B has set a community meeting for March 30 at the Rose Prairie Curling Club. The Peace River Regional District last held what is sometimes referred to as a “roundtable” in Area B in 2018, chaired by the former and now alternate, Director Karen Goodings. With COVID-19 restrictions no longer an obstacle, the PRRD is clear to return to more in person events throughout the year.

The community meeting is an opportunity for residents to connect with their local government representative and bring forward their priorities and concerns. The PRRD will provide an update on the Rose Prairie water station, which has been closed since March 2021, and provide refreshers on regional initiatives and services.

Residents can RSVP to the event or pose questions in advance of the meeting on the Rose Prairie Community Meeting event page on Facebook, @prrdofficial. Event inquiries can also be directed to the PRRD at 250-784-3200 or communications@prrd.bc.ca.
