Mile Zero Judokans come back with medals from Edm.
Rob Brown editor@dcdn.ca
21 Judokans from Mile Zero Judo Club were in Edmonton last week for the International Judo Championships.
Team Leader and Sensei with the club Isabelle Gelinas says competitions like this are the only way to become good at competing.
“Learn to manage the stress and
the excitement of such a big venue, and learned to adapt to travels and new surrounding and still be able to perform,” she says.
“From what foods work well for you as a competitor to adapting to fighters you’ve never met before.”
Gelinas also notes hitting the road and competing against others is a fantastic way for them to decide how they’re doing in general.

“With applying everything they have learned so far. Measured themselves against fighters the same size, same age, and similar rank.”
The tournament was held at the West Edmonton Mall.
“(It was) super fun for everyone but also huge! I think total turnout for the weekend was 1005 competitors.”

– In the pay of power.
When was the last time you made a moral decision without looking back to see if someone was looking back to see what you were going to choose to be?
A few days ago, I listened to an expert testifying before the Arizona State Legislature lecturing the lawmakers on the reason they fund public education in the state.
This expert qualified herself by flaunting her Master of something or other degree.
“I have a master’s degree,” she intoned boastfully, and thereby am qualified to instruct you on why we must insist that children go to public schools.
Parents are not qualified to decide what is best for their children. Huh (my response)?
Certainly not qualified even to question the school boards on curriculum content or other school requirements.
Leave that to the experts. We who know what children should be learning are the only ones who should be deciding on curriculum and other requirements.
Children are in school to be socialized according to the current ideology.
Oh yes, math and language skills will also be taught.
But we stress that parents must give way without protest to the experts on decisions about schooling.
small-farm-country Saskatchewan, we had separate, clearly defined, well-screened biffies out back. With not even a thought of a communal biffy between.
We were satisfied. And we grew up, looking straight ahead, and went out to make our way in an exciting world. Now the world is just plain scary.
And now we look sideways and over our shoulders to see who is listening to our pronouns.
Instead of making our own decisions as befits sentient human beings, we wait for the school board or the government or the health authority to decide for us.
As if we do not know how to bring up our own flesh and blood to be decent, thinking, creative citizens.
As though we don’t know how to decide for ourselves what is best for ourselves.
Problem: perhaps we’ve abdicated our human responsibility to the point that making our own decisions is approaching absolute zero.
Granted, it is now dangerous.
just shrug your shoulders, if you have any, and be happy? It’s the way of the world in 2023 and beyond – it seems.
Unless…
Let me think…
Unless you rise in righteous indignation and throw the change agents out of office at the ballot box, at the first opportunity, at the polling station nearest your residence.
Unless you commit to home educating your offspring – hardly an option for many worried parents. (Did you notice I wrote ‘educating’ and not ‘schooling’ – there a worldchanging difference?)
Unless you avoid public libraries, swimming pools, and other places of common access.
Unless you are content to be a second-class citizen in Oh Canada while you continue to pay the taxes of the first.

This was the gist of her lecture which, frankly, I found highly disturbing – not so much because the expert holds to these woke ideas, which she is entitled as a free agent to have and to hold, but because the State Legislature gave her the time of day. Clearly, our elected representatives are not free from the tightening, frightening grasp of those who boast themselves as experts.
Sadly, the same ideology seems to have taken a vice-like grip on the education system in our Canada, once strong and free.
When I was a boy, strong and free and eager to learn in our oneteacher-one-room-multi-multi-grade, log-construction schoolhouse in
To stand between your prepubescent child and the government or its agents when your child has been coopted by wokism could land you in jail.
Or render you childless.
Take your pick.
Children now have the right to choose irreversible mutilating surgical and chemical procedures before they have the right to vote for their favorite school board candidates.
And you, Mom and Dad, have lost much ability, though you have the right, to effective or affective protest. The most recent heavy hands have come down in Calgary, but you can be sure others are not far behind.
And you, Mom and Dad, why not
But I submit that there is an option: cease to be intimidated. Find out what is happening in our country and stand up to the experts and their proxies in elected office.
Make that moral decision without looking back to see if someone is looking back to see what you are going to choose to be.
By the way, we’ll end this rant with a word from the Ancients: “Train up your children in the way they should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it.”
Please notice how I adjusted the pronoun to be inclusive without doing violence to our English language, without bending the knee to wokism, without asking permission of the experts, and without changing the intent of the Ancients.

Bulterys House opens doors for regional pregnancy support
Rob Brown
editor@dcdn.ca
Dale Bumstead thanked many for support and helping finish the Bulterys House.
The project is a long gestating refurbishment of the former of Dr. Octaaf Bulterys into a support home for families and to provide additional accommodations to health care professionals in Dawson Creek and the Peace Region.
Just prior to COVID-19, the South Peace Health Services Society partnered with the Lake View Credit Union.
“When the South Peace Health Services Society brought this project to our attention, our board and staff were eager to be involved,” said Lori Archibald, CEO of Lake View Credit Union at the time.
In June of 2020 organizers noted the project had stalled and was just over 70 percent completed.
“What we have been able to do is partner with businesses who care about the community,” said chair of the South Peace Health Services Society Bumstead, adding the building will be managed by Dawson Creek Society for Community Living staff.
“We have an operating plan and agreement in place,” said Bumstead adding support has been incoming and ongoing from throughout the Peace region, from the PRRD who helped pay off the
group’s mortgage/loan, and the Lions Club of Tumbler Ridge who fundraised $10K for the project.
PRRD chair Leonard Hiebert said the support made sense.
“For us, removing the mortgage was a no brainer,” he said.
Bumstead said the facility is now open for business. editor@dcdn.ca

STARS provides update to City

Representatives from STARS Air Ambulance are presenting this morning to City of Dawson Creek officials with a 2022 update.
Glenda Farnden, Senior Municipal Relations Liaison and Jon Gogan, Provincial Director, Northern & Central Alberta Operations, STARS are on hand.
“The City of Dawson Creek is part of PRRD partnership supporting STARS since we brought a base to Grande Prairie 16 years ago,” said Farnden adding both cities and counties are working together.
“Urban and rural together are supporting each other and
STARS with a fixed rate or multi year grants. Dawson Creek is part of united municipal effort that ensures we all have access to robust safety network.”
Jon Gogan, Provincial Director, Northern & Central Alberta Operations, said the new helicopters are nothing but a plus. It was noted since 2010, 69 people within the PRRD, including 31 with Dawson Creek postal codes have flown STARS as patients – with access to hospital care across western Canada.
“STARS is such an amazing program and important part of our area,” said mayor Darcy Dober.

Caregivers:figuring outlegalmatters
There are about 15 million people caring for and supporting the thousands of Canadians who have Alzheimer’s. As a caregiver, you may feel reluctant to take the long-term view on such matters, but the sooner you undertake some legal planning, the more the person with dementia can participate in important decisions.
There are two main areas where legal planning comes into play. They both require some kind of assessment of legal capacity in order to determine whether the person with Alzheimer’s understands the consequences of their actions in making legal decisions. A visit to a lawyer can clarify all the legal needs that should be taken care of.
The agent, or designate, is able to make decisions about the assets and income of the person with Alzheimer’s. A successor, or backup, and even a third successor agent should be chosen as well, in case the designate is unable to perform their duties. As long as the person with dementia is deemed to have legal capacity, the agent may not override any of his or her decisions, even if they seem contentious.
This is an important step in advance planning. When the person with Alzheimer’s can no longer reasonably make decisions about treatment, care facilities, and healthcare professionals, the agent may do so instead. Making a living will is essential as well; this document allows the person with dementia to decide in advance which kinds of interventions they don’t want to undergo and specify other end-of-life decisions.

Youth group planning big 2023
Rob Brown editor@dcdn.ca
Bryce Wisekal with Young Life in Dawson Creek wants the public to know the organization was not a casualty of COVID-19. Wisekal says the group is winding up for a busy 2023 – but is short in its volunteer base.
“We still meet up with 15 to 20 kids in Dawson Creek each week,” he says.
“We want to spread the word that we haven’t left.”
The outfit has a May 6 dessert banquet – seeing youth in the

“This summer in July we are planning on sending 21 kids to the Rockridge camp in Princeton BC. We meet every second Monday at the First Baptist Church in Dawson Creek – at promptly 5:19pm
Wisekal has been with the organization since 2016 when he joined as a volunteer. The organization has been operating in Dawson Creek since 1991.

Forgetting the advance reporting on the cameo – when the film opens with Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren in similar garb – you know a Wonder Woman cameo is likely on the horizon.
Shazam’s back story of “all the power, but none of the experience of Superman,” is explored here perhaps more than in the first film. Captain Marvel and the rest of the Marvel family are the joke of Philadelphia – and are looking for some superhero redemption.
The film is a markedly different tone than Black Adam from last fall, or even ‘the last couple immature but better than the first two’ Thor movies.
The character relationships are not that developed here –despite the hero versions of the kids getting much more screen time. With the exception of main sidekick Freddy – there is little character development.
The films does seem to straddle between the existing DC Universe, the Black Adam push, and the upcoming Flash movie. It is a big budget spectacle playing this week in the Creek.

Ian was born on Thursday, January 20, 1944 in Lanark, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1967. Ian passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, in Dawson Creek. Ian went home, trusting in God and filled with gratitude. His very last words were a request, no, a command, to me, Sheila, his wife: “Tell them how grateful I am.” He repeated these six words three times, starting with a soft voice and by the third time, he spoke them loudly, with all the breath he had in him. Who am I to tell? All the people who touched Ian’s life. You will probably be the same people who met Ian and were touched by his life, I know because I, myself, was one of these people. I asked my good friend, Judy Boyer, another one of these people, to write the following poem to help broadcast Ian’s request:
Tell Them
From the very first breath I drew on this earth
My life has been touched by God’s gracious hand, The people He sent enriched my life so, Tell them how grateful I am.
From a tiny wee babe in my dear mother’s arms
To a toddler, a child, a boy, then a man.
I’ve been carried along by the people of God.
Tell them how grateful I am.
The people who shared in my journey through life, There for a moment or through my life span; My family, career, my friends old and new
Tell them how grateful I am.
Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
Daniel“Dan”JohnWilliamMcPhail
Dan McPhail, resident of Beaverlodge, AB, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2023, at home in Beaverlodge, at the age of 75 years.
Dan was born on April 3, 1947, in Edmonton, AB. In the early 1950s, the family settled in the Yukon. At the age of 16, he joined the army and served in Germany for 3 years as a NATO peacekeeper. He married Susan in 1973, in Whitehorse, YT. They lived in various communities in British Columbia and retired in Beaverlodge in 2019.
Dan was a skilled mechanic, plying his trade all across British Columbia, and the Yukon. His talents translated to a craftsman in his woodshop where he turned out countless treasures and passed on his knowledge.
A life of adventure from early travels overseas to his annual ATV trips in the mountains kept his spirit young. Piloting his small plane in the skies of the North was a dream of Dan’s that he cherished.
Dan is survived by his wife Susan; children: John (Natalie), and Katie (Neal); grandchildren: Aislin, Conor, Renee, and Dan; siblings: Donna, Rod, Charles, and Susan. He was predeceased by his parents John and Rose McPhail, and sister Rhonda.
Dan will be missed by many.

Classifieds
4 teaspoons yuzu juice
3 tablespoons Kewpie mayonnaise
1⁄2 red onion, thinly sliced
1⁄2 cucumber, deseeded and julienned
1⁄2 Asian pear, peeled and julienned
To serve
8 taco shells (5 inches in diameter)
8 teaspoons sour cream
1 small tomato, finely diced Baby coriander (cilantro)
First, make the kimchi salsa. In a medium bowl, toss together the kimchi, tomato and jalapeños until evenly mixed, then set aside.
Next, to make the slaw, whisk the yuzu juice and mayonnaise together in a medium bowl. Stir in the red onion, cucumber and pear. Cover and leave in the fridge.
Half fill a heavy-based saucepan with oil and heat to 350 F.
Make the tempura batter just before frying. In a bowl, whisk together the tempura flour and soda water, making sure to keep it lumpy.
Salt the sea bass on both sides. Working in batches, dip the fish into the tempura batter, and fry for about 3 to 4 minutes, until the batter is golden brown and the fish is cooked. Place on a rack to drain off any excess oil and keep warm while you cook the rest.
Heat the taco shells according to the packet instructions.
Line the shells up on a plate and add a piece of the fish to each one. Top with the slaw and then the salsa. Garnish with a dollop of sour cream, diced tomato and baby coriander. PC232706
