Property Crime prevention tips from the DC RCMP The Dawson Creek RCMP would like remind area residents as the year starts to enter the colder months - to protect your belongings. Theft from seasonal properties/ cabins tend to occur during the colder months of the year and the following tips should be used as a guide to help secure your property: Secure all doors and windows Install a security system that can be accessed through your phone Make the property look occupied such as automatic lights Consider taking expensive equipment home for the season Arrange for regular maintenance such as leaf and snow removal Ask your neighbours to keep an eye out
Also with the temperatures starting to dip, the need to start your car to warm up may be required. The Dawson Creek RCMP would also like to remind you of the following: Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the keys inside Lock your doors and close your windows of your vehicle Take valuables with you Use an anti-theft device Most thefts of property or of vehicles are a crime of opportunity and the Dawson Creek RCMP urge the community to protect their belongings to help decrease the chance of thefts from occurring. If you notice anything that may be suspicious please contact the Dawson Creek RCMP immediately at 250-784-3700 or 911. editor@dcdn.ca

A pair of new councillors are now sitting in their seats in the Village of Pouce Coupe. Marcel Woodill and Danielle Veach were sworn in just after 7pm last Wed. evening.
Both were elected earlier this year in a byelection in the village. editor@dcdn.ca
Pouce Coupe mayor replaced on all portfolio positions Complete with two new faces around the Village of Pouce Coupe council table, new faces will be representing the village on a handful of boards and commissions. Almost the first order of new business with a full village council in attendance was a motion passed by the new-look council to remove Mayor Lorraine Michetti from representing the village on all portfolios. “I think I would like to learn about the fire department,” said councillor Marlene Hebert as the council looked at filling the first of Michetti’s portfolio positions.
New councillors worked down the list of boards and commissions Michetti currently sits on and represents the village – and replaced the mayor with councillors. Prior to the vote on the motion to replace the mayor, a short discussion was held to draft letters to each board noting a replacement, which predicted and forecasted the impending vote, result, and decision to replace Michetti. editor@dcdn.ca

1. Speak to your audience and no one elSe. Attempting to connect with everyone will only weaken the message you’re trying to convey. 2. craft a powerful headline to capture the attention of your target audience. 3. Select one main image for your design, and make sure that it ties in with the ad’s overall message. 4. optimize your copy. Choose the right words to clearly communicate why the product or service you’re selling is exactly what your audience needs. 5. embrace white Space. Don’t let superfluous clutter distract your audience from the key points in your ad. 6. limit your offerS to two. Less is more when it comes to advertising. Including too much information will only confuse your audience. 7. make your ad viSually appealing by grouping similar elements together, limiting the number of typefaces you use and choosing colours wisely. 8. Stand out with colour. A full-colour ad on an otherwise black-andwhite page is sure to draw the eye, and the opposite — monochromatic in a sea of colour — is equally true. 9. alwayS include a call to action. What do you want people to do after they’ve read your ad? Sign up for your service? Visit your showroom? Let them know! 10. keep contact information cryStal clear. Potential buyers need to instantly know how and where to reach you.

Quote of ThE WEEk
NICHOLS: the long and the short of it. Uncut. Readers: our last version of this story ran with some edit due to space. We’d prefer the full monty of a column if you will. Here you go. - Managing Editor Once upon a time there was a wise man called Solomon, a king, and very rich indeed, who gave us many proverbs long and short. As Solomon the wise advises us: whatever your hand finds to do, put into doing it your energy your thought your vision your passion, because where you are headed and going fast there is no “work or device or knowledge or wisdom” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). What? Nothing? I’m just reporting the gist of the wise man’s words as I read them. I’m not responsible for what they say! I’m not irresponsible either; I would be if I failed to share them with you. You might question why a guy like me would choose to muse about death. I would respond, “Why not?” It seems that a destination to which all of humanity appear to be headed should receive a little publicity while brain function lasts. We have been terrorized these last 18 or so months. Governments the world around with the zealous and effective help of the main-stream media have been putting energy and passion, if not a lot of thought and vision into scaring the hell out of us with the fear of death by covid. All the time not pausing to reflect that this thing commonly thought to be hell does not exist – at least I can find no evidence for its existence. It’s got to be a fabricated tale of an imaginary destination reserved for the bad to generate fear and compliance. Seems like some things never change!
DRAGNET!
Our governments have learned and practiced their Thomas Hobbes (control by fear) very well indeed. Chronic fear produces compliance like nothing else can do. But what do we have to fear? Fear itself is our greatest enemy. Fear strangles our minds, blockades our ambitions, stifles our drive, thwarts the achievement of our fondest hopes, and potentially can prevent entry into God’s eternal kingdom of love. And the world has lived a year and a half in the nest of fear. What can possibly hatch from such a nest? Except more fear? So life is short, like a squirrel’s life and death is long, really, really long but n ot as funny. We and the squirrel will go to the same place when death knocks. Is that so? How can it be? Indeed. Made from the same elements of the earth, without life we simply return to earth: molecules of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, magnesium, and other elements, indistinguishable from those of the once-chattering squirrel. Unless... Yes, there is an alternative to living in fear. It’s called living with trust and hope. “But,” you protest, “you don’t give me anything to hope for or in. Returning to the dust like a chattering squirrel! Where’s the focus of hope?” Granted. I can’t cut off the essay here. That would leave me looking like Richard Dawkins or one of his disciples. No, Richard and I are on entirely different wavelengths. He is proud to bill himself as a materialist, an atheist, a god denier. He’s written multiple books to support his position and convince the public who might be sitting on the fence – weak and unconvincing arguments to be sure, but popular nevertheless.
7
I, on the other hand, am not a materialist. I believe in a Creator who takes a personal interest in the affairs of each individual on earth. As Creator, He has given each of us free will, the ability to choose whom we will serve – and there are only two options, not more. You will believe in a Creator who cares about you, or not. There’s no third option. “Still you haven’t fixed the problem of being like the dead squirrel when I die. Where’s the reason not to fear death?” Good point. Our Creator keeps a record of our DNA and has a wake-up time planned for all who have put their trust in the Creator, who is really Jesus Christ; a wake-up call for all who have died from covid or cancer or bubonic plague or hunger or government brutality or from tired old age – it really doesn’t matter. We will hear His voice and come out of the graves alive in the vitality of immortal youth to live forever – as real, flesh-and-bone human beings – not as vague, ghostly spirits riding a cloud. That’s what the Book says, not Dawkins’ book, but the Good Book. We have only two options, not three. We can believe Dawkins’ hopeless case, or the only other option, the Creator who cares for us. What happens to fear when you put your trust in the Creator? It goes. The governments with the help of the popular media have worked to create a climate of fear that reduces us to compliant toadies. Don’t let it happen to you. Live in the peace that your Creator freely gives you. That’s the long and short of it. Merlin Nichols Columnist

convicted.
He spent 23 years in one for a crime he didn’t commit. In 1969, he was arrested and convicted for the rape and murder of 20 year old nursing student Gail Miller, entering the Canadian criminal justice system at 16 and was finally released at age 39, when DNA evidence cleared his name.
“It’s important to say that prison’s horrible, not only is it important to say that because it’s true, it’s important because there are young people that somehow think that maybe they’re smart or they’re getting away with doing some wrong, but the last place you want to end up is inside a prison,” said Milgaard.
Since then he has been an advocate for the rights of prisoners and the wrongfully

struggle to rebuild his life, noting he couldn’t have survived his ordeal without love from family and friends. “It’s not been an easy walk, there’s no doubt about that. The one thing I had going for me inside prison is family and a mother that was always fighting to get me out. The biggest thing you need to survive inside there, are people that are there to tell you to do well in your life and do what you should be doing, rather than the things you shouldn’t be doing,” he said. “The problem is, and we have a saying inside prison – out of sight, is out of mind, and it’s true, you know, you’re not there inside someone’s sight where they can see you, you’re inside prison. You don’t think very much about that. It’s really good to have people that are willing to make a difference.” A $10 million dollar settlement was reached between Milgaard and the Canadian government after his release. When asked if the money was an appropriate compensation for what happened, he says it never made up for time lost with family and friends. Milgaard eventually pushed for an independent Criminal Case Review Commission to make it easier and faster for potentially wrongfully convicted people to have their applications reviewed.
“There’s better ways to deal with the problems of criminality than what is being used in this country, they use a punitive justice model, there’s other justice models,” he says. “It doesn’t help. 80 percent of the people housed in our prisons don’t need to be there, they’re not a threat to anybody’s person or property. It actually makes people worse.” He says the system still needs strong oversight, even after meeting with Canada’s Justice Minister David Lametti to discuss the commission this year. “The past system didn’t work very well at all. Police investigating police, it just wasn’t something that was working. Now though, as the transition is taking place, what is really horrifying, as far as I’m concerned as a wrongfully convicted person, is that once they have already identified people as having a miscarriage of justice, they’re not setting them free, they’re holding them inside a bunch of rules and standards and measures, to basically to surround their own wagons to avoid embarrassment and shame,” says Milgaard. “That’s not right, that’s not justice, that’s just wrong.” Tom Summer, Alaska Highway News, Local Journalism Initiative. Kiddine calls it a day after 32 years with Sexsmith Farm Parts Dillon Giancola Reporter/Photographer
“We had to change to where the business was going. If farmers went to bigger combines, that’s what we had to bring in. Farming with a 410 (Massey Ferguson Combine) compared to modern combines is a whirlwind of change. GPS wasn’t heard of 30 years ago, and we’ve come such a long way from selling the old, ancient parts to the modern technology today.” Sexsmith Farm Parts used to deal more in land tillage tools, and farmers would spend a lot more hours on tractors. Now, that’s changed completely. “There is zero tilling now. Guys used to wait until the season dried up, but now farmers want to harvest right away. Farming is much more of a science these days, and more of a fulltime thing,” said Kiddine.
“I feel great, it was all my decision. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right time in my life to make it,” Kiddine said.
“I’ll actually be busier,” Kiddine said when asked if he’s looking forward to some extra downtime. “Sometimes you spread your wings too thin. That’s kind of been my problem, doing a little bit of everything and a lot of nothing,” Kiddine joked. Kiddine said the hardest part of leaving the store is not being able to stay as in touch with his clients. “That’s a big disappointment, not being able to keep in touch with your clientele that you built over 32 years. All the customers, the staff and employees we’ve had, they’ll be missed.” Kiddine said working at Sexsmith Farm Parts has been one of the best decisions of his life. “To leave here is hard. The company came from nothing, nd we built an empire out of it.” Over the past three decades Kiddine has witnessed first hand the drastic change in the farming industry. “As the farming industry has gotten bigger, so has the machinery. At the same time, there are fewer and fewer farmers, farming more and more acres,” Kiddine said.

Olfactory stimulation in cats By Dr. Joana Varga Many of us look for new ways to enhance the quality of our indoor cat’s lives. Olfactory (smell) stimulation is stimulation caused by smell only. Smell is often an overlooked method of entertainment and environmental enrichment for domestic and wild cats kept indoors. Environmental enrichment plays a big role in the captivity of big cats and even our own domestic house cats. Commonly, catnip (Nepta cataria) has been a main source of stimulation in domestic and even wild cats. There are many alternatives to catnip as not all cats respond to it! How does catnip work? Catnip works is by releasing chemicals called allomones. Allomones are chemicals released by plants to either attract or deter prey or predators. These alllomones released by catnip cause a euphoric effect on domestic and wild cats. The specific chemical in catnip that causes euphoria in cats is called Neptalactone and it only causes these euphoric signs in cats only by smell. How does your cat respond to catnip? The ability to react to catnip is hereditary and is a dominant trait in cats. Typically cats respond to catnip by rolling, biting, smelling, licking or rubbing their head, chin and cheek all over the catnip object. These behaviours are commonly accompanied by drooling or kicking the catnip with their hind feet. Unfortunately, not all cats respond to catnip and apparently only 1 in 3 domestic cats respond well to catnip. In the wild,

Could your pet have a heart problem? Dogs and cats both get heart disease, however, unlike people they rarely have heart attacks. 35% of dogs over the age of 9 years have heart disease (more than 1/3 of all older dogs!). The most common heart problem in dogs is thickening of the heart valves. This increases the amount of work the heart must perform to pump blood through the body, and eventually the heart is unable to keep up. When this happens the dog is in congestive heart failure and fluid builds up – usually in the lungs, and now they must also work harder to breathe, are often lethargic, and may cough. Cats can also have heart problems. Their most common problem is called HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) and is known as “the silent killer”, as cats are know to hide illness . With this disease the heart muscle thickens until the heart is barely able to contract. HCM can occur at any stage during a cat’s life. Heart problems can sneak up your pet. It is important for your pet to have a yearly physical exam so your veterinarian can check the whole animal and listen to his or her heart. The veterinarian will look for warning signs for any illness and to help pet owners with information on ways to keep their pet’s healthy. Early detection and heart medications may help with treatment of various heart conditions.

tigers are more sensitive to catnip than jaguars, lions and leopards. Most cats after playing with catnip or honeysuckle will be very tired. This side effect of sleepiness can last for 2 hours. Alternatives to catnip: For the cats that do not react to catnip, there are many alternative plants that cause the same reaction catnip does. These include honeysuckle, silver vine and valerian root. Honeysuckle (Lonicera tartarica) is a plant that contains a natural chemical very similar to catnip. The leaves, flowers and berries of honeysuckle is toxic to cats, but the woody part is what is used to make toys and sprays. Reactions of this are similar to cat nip but also include chasing around invisible prey, growling, kneading. Cats will also sleep after being exposed to honeysuckles like catnip. Cats need to be sexually mature for them to respond to honeysuckle (over 6 months of age). Silver vine (Actinidia polygama) is a climbing plant commonly found in the mountains of Asia. This is commonly used in Japan as a cat stimulant. This plant has 2 types of cat attractants compared to catnip, so it is more potent in its effects. Silver vine in the form of powder, causes the same euphoric reactions as catnip and honeysuckle, but its effects are stronger and can last from 5 – 30 minutes. Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is a plant with a very pungent smell. The roots are chunky full of sticks. The smell is described as earthy like or old socks. This plant has been used for many years in humans as a medicinal calming herb. It was discovered that valerian root causes the same behaviours of catnip when cats commonly ran off with valerian tea bags. This root is safe for cats to smell or to accidentally ingest. Since it is not metabolized by cats, there is no risk of addiction, withdrawals or long lasting effects. Cats can be given valerian root in a few ways, typically it is chopped into small pieces, making the scent stronger, sprinkled onto the floor or in a reusable toy. With valerian root, because it is so strong in smell, a little bit goes a long way.

U18 Predators play in Calgary Firestarter Tournament
The U18 Northeast BC Predators made their annual trip to Calgary last weekend, October 1 to 3, for the Calgary Firestarter Female Hockey Tournament. The girls were in tough, playing the Edmonton Pandas, Calgary Fire Red, and Airdrie Lightning.
November 5 to 7, at the Taylor Arena. The Preds will host the first “super-weekend”, which will see teams from Williams Lake, Prince George, and Fraser Lake come to the Peace Region for a weekend full of regular season games.
Despite losing the four games they played by wide margins, the girls got some valuable early-season game experience, especially since they have barely played competitive hockey since the 2019-20 season.
Before then, the U18, U15 and U13 Predators teams will be in Richmond for the Pacific Coast Female Rep Hockey Classic, October 22 to 24.
All three Predators teams are gearing up for week one of the Female A North Zone League,

Grande Prairie Buckwild! win propels Jake Gardner into Top 10, focused on PBR Canada Finals Fitting that Jake Gardner won his career-first PBR Canada Cup Series event in Grande Prairie, a place very close to home, and one where he has had success before.
on the 2021 schedule, Gardner has his sights firmly on qualifying for the PBR Canada National Finals in Edmonton, November 12 and 13, and winning a national title.
Gardner, who has ties to both Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, was the only rider to go a perfect three-for-three at the PBR Grande Prairie BuckWild event, posting scores of 82, 83, and a championship round-best 89 points, according to PBR Canada. Gardner also finished second in the accompanying 5/5 Bucking Battle with an 84.5-point score that earned him Ride of the Night honours.
The top 25 qualify for Edmonton, and with the 96 points from Grande Prairie, and chances to add more at Medicine Hat, Calgary, and Saskatoon over the coming weeks, it’s looking good for Gardner to have a shot at his goal.
“I’ve had some good luck at rodeos there in the past couple years, and my first big pro rodeo win was in Grande Prairie. I always feel good when PBR events are there, it was my closest event to home this year, and it was pretty great to get up and ride in front of a lot of people I know cheering me on,” Gardner said.
Though this was Gardner’s first Canada Cup series win, he has won a couple of Touring Pro PBR events in Canada before, which are a level just before the Canada Cup. “I’ve been trying to get one of these wins for the past couple of years. It’s one of the highlights of my career so far,” Gardner said.
Gardner entered the PBR Grande Prairie BuckWild ranked No. 26 in the national standings, and left with 96 national points, rocketing him into the Top 10 at No. 9, according to PBR Canada. He is now 109.83 points behind No. 1 ranked Dakota Buttar of Kindersley, Saskatchewan.
Heading into the winter, Gardner is hoping his efforts at the American pro rodeos last season earned him entry into more rodeos down South when the pro rodeo season starts in January. Riders need to place in the top 40 in the previous year’s events to qualify for the following year.
With four PBR Canada Cup Series events left
Mon-Fri: 8:00am – 5:00pm Sat & Sun: 8:00am – 4:00pm
“Hopefully I’ll win a few of these events, place well, and be good to go at Edmonton and put a couple solid rides together,” he said.

OCTOBER Quin: I’m 15 and I go to the South Peace Campus at DCSS. It’s my first year there. I really like it. Connor: I’m 13 and at my first year at Central campus of DCSS. It’s cool. We live in town and we started delivering the Mirror in February 2021. Connor: It’s the BEST job EVER! Even when it’s winter, raining or windy. Quin: Yep, the Best Job ever. Thursday afternoons we deliver our papers over near the Crescent Park area and we deliver 100 papers between us. Connor: I’m saving up for a Playstation 5 and Skylander stuff. Quin: I just buy random stuff; like hockey cards, books, comics, Magic cards, video games and D&D stuff. We haven’t had anything funny or unusual on our route yet.

SMASHNUK, Margaret E. March 9, 1929 − September 14, 2021 Our mother, Margaret Smashnuk passed away unexpectedly on September 14, 2021 at the age of 92. Mom devoted her life to her family and caring for others. She was predeceased by her husband Leon, son Alan, (Darlene) and son Brian. Marge is survived by her children Layne (Linda) of Terrace, Ron (Debbie) of Dawson Creek, Carol Mann of Kelowna, and Gordon of Edmonton. Grand children − Trina Heerschop (Rick) of Vernon, Charlene Smasjnuk of Terrace, Dave Smashnuk of Terrace, Amanda Marshall (Zane) of Terrace, Steve Smashnuk of Toronto, Brandy Purnell (Krispin) of Dawson Creek, Jarret Mann (Stacy) of Calgary, Travis Mann of Canmore. Great grandchildren −Taura of Vernon, Todd of Prince Albert, Jordana, Braden, Ethan, Jaxson and Malone of Terrace. Brook, Emma and Spencer of Ontario. Ryder−Dayne and Memphis, of Dawson Creek. Taylor and Lauren of Calgary, Tyson and Delaynee of Canmore. Marge was born into a large family, with three brothers and seven sisters. She is survived by brother Johnny Frey, sisters Katie, Jean (Walter), Millie, Betty (Gary), Josephine (Gordon). Marge was predeceased by two brothers George and Peter, and two sisters Anne and Mary. Mom lived most of her life in Dawson Creek and Beaverlodge, Alberta and moved to Kelowna to live with her daughter Carol for cancer treatments in 2012. Marge missed her friends and family in the north and stayed connected with frequent lengthy and happy phone calls. She was successful in beating cancer and loved the climate of the Okanagan, the abundance of fruit and vegetables and spent as much time as possible outdoors reading, bird watching and simply enjoying the warmth of the sun. Mom never wanted to be the centre of attention, so her celebration of life will be private for immediate family members only and will be held at a later time. Friends wishing to honour Marge are invited to make a donation in her name to their local children’s hospitals or child care centres. Condolences may be offered at www.everdenrust.com

Spotlight Public engagement ramping up for Chetwynd Public Library project The Chetwynd Public Library is a hub of the community, providing services and programs to residents since 1959. Over the years the library has grown in order to meet the public’s needs, but the building has reached the point for replacement. The District of Chetwynd, Chetwynd Public Library Board and staff, and the PRRD have been working together on this project since 2016 and are pleased to present it to the community. An open house highlighting the features of the new library will be hosted on November 3rd, 2021 at the Chetwynd Public Library from 3pm to 7pm.
Feedback needed on Official Community Plan The draft of the proposed new North Peace Fringe Area Official Community Plan (OCP) is now available for public review. An OCP sets out the future vision for an area and sets a framework to guide decision making on land use planning matters including where new growth and development will be directed to, what uses are permitted and how areas will be protected for things like agriculture, recreation and the environment. The current OCP was approved in 2009 and the draft document will look to replace that existing plan with a forward looking document. To review and leave your feedback visit haveyoursay.prrd.bc.ca/np-ocp.

North Peace Leisure Pool offering exciting public incentives to mark anniversary milestone The North Peace Leisure Pool will celebrate 25 years of service to the residents of the Peace region this Tuesday, October 26. To commemorate the event, the North Peace Leisure Pool Commission voted in favor to host a free swim, 25% off monthly passes and 25% off all merchandise offered at the facility on this day. The North Peace Leisure Pool opened in 1996 and is proudly owned by the Peace River Regional District and operated by the City of Fort St John. The facility offers many aquatic programs such as fitness, community first aid, advance aquatic leadership programs, swimming and water safety instruction.
The facility is also home to the Inconnu Swim Club. No pre-registration is required to participate in the celebration; residents simply need to visit the pool from 6am to 10pm on Tuesday, October 26 to take advantage of the special offerings.
Province launches engagement for Taylor bridge options The Province of B.C. is hosting two virtual open houses on Oct. 13 and Oct. 21 to discuss the future of the Taylor bridge alongside an online form to collect feedback from the public. Residents of the PRRD are strongly encouraged to make sure their voices are heard by taking part in these engagement opportunities before the close date of November 15. Visit engage.gov.bc.ca/taylorbridge to register and complete the form.
Peace region residents show they care about being FireSmart The first regional FireSmart program for the Peace has wrapped for the 2021 season, aiming to build resiliency through public education and community engagement. The PRRD Board of Directors approved the campaign in April of this year, with the consultant contract awarded to local wildfire experts, Craig and Mitch Wilson from Mammoth Forestry. Over the spring and summer months the FireSmart team conducted 122 property assessments for rural residents, delivered educational materials to 592 homes in highrisk areas and 750 gardening guides, created a strong community presence at 10 public Ember at the DC Rodeo events throughout the region including the Dawson Creek Rodeo and applied to have One Island Lake certified as a FireSmart neighbourhood. While the peak period for wildfires is over, residents are encouraged to continue their fire safety learning journey by visting firesmartbc.ca during the winter months.
