WestJet grounding

Dawson Creek/ Calgary flights

What first took off in Sept. 2021 – will be grounded March 1, 2023.

The City of Dawson Creek has been notified that as of March 1WestJet will be pulling their service from the Dawson Creek Regional Airport.

WestJet first made the announcement of the flights in early 2020 – only to have the COVID 19 pandemic delay the flights and business model.

“When they called two years ago and let us know our business cases was a viable thing – we were over the moon. Then a couple months later – pandemic and COVID-19 postponed that,” said then Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead to the Mirror in 2020.

In Sept. 2021, it was announced the new service will operate four-times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

New ED named for Dawson Creek Chamber of Commerce

A new ED has been named for the Dawson Creek and District Chamber of Commerce –Duncan Malkinson, who takes the role on part time in addition to his duties at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery.

Malkinson’s leadership, experience and commitment to community impressed the board of directors, said board president at the Chamber, Chris Richards.

WestJet grounding Dawson Creek/Calgary flights

Touchdown Feb. 2023 - Dawson Creek Mayor Darcy Dober said today the closure is a disappointment.

“We would like to thank WestJet for their attempts in making this work, especially during the tough times this industry has had. We wish them all the best in the future,” he said in a statement.

ED of the Dawson Creek Chamber of Commerce, Duncan Malkinson said it is never good to see reduced economic activity in the area.

“In the long term in the city’s plans, such as regional airport authority planning, the Chamber of Commerce is happy to help at any step of the way, as it relates to our members and to the business community,” he said. editor@dcdn.ca

The Chamber is in the midst of relocating from the Obair office at the corner of 10201 10 St, to the former Community Futures office location at 1212 103 Ave.

Malkinson noted his first day was today.

“It is an exciting time,” said Malkinson to the Mirror. editor@dcdn.ca

Tumbler Ridge doctor authors three books for children

Dr. Ife Akanegbu has a trio of books for children focusing on promoting positive mental health –the colourful picture book series is ‘Motivating Our Champions’.

“It is something certainly more prevalent since the pandemic,” says Dr. Akanegbu from Tumbler Ridge to the Mirror.

“It is important for children, youth, and adults to talk about mental health,” he adds.

“Patients when they used to bring the subject up – thought they were the only ones – the truth is they are not, and mental health issues are dealt with much more in the day to day now,” he says adding issues can stem from other issues such as weight gain, neglect, or simply too much TV.

“There are also more tools to help deal with mental issues compared to before.”

One tool Dr. Akanegbu has committed to creating - is authoring three short story books for children and youth.

“It is time to bring these books to the public, and get them in into libraries and start some discussions.”

It is on that very note that Dr. Akanegbu will be hosting an open house and meet the author afternoon at the Tumbler Ridge Library on March 4.

The idea is to begin to address and then manage some of these issues. If they are not addressed – this is one of my greatest fears,” he says.

“It’s time to open some doors.”

Dr. Akanegbu cites video game addictions, and less connectivity with the real world as some real obstacles as well.

“What I have is three picture books

written with motivational characters and addressing issues children and youth may encounter in their regular day to day lives,” he says.

“Parents and children can read these and connect to some concepts.”

Dr. Akanegbu expects to have the books in libraries throughout the Peace region, and another meet the author event in Dawson Creek. Dr. Akanegbu’s meet the author afternoon at the Tumbler Ridge Library on March 4.

Protect the most vulnerable members of the community

Children and youth are particularly vulnerable members of the family. Due to their age, physical size and reliance on adults, children may suffer disproportionally to abuse and neglect.

The Child, Family and Community Service Act requires that anyone who has reason to believe that a child or youth that has been or

is likely to be abused or neglected, and that the parents is unwilling or unable to protect the child must report the suspected abuse or neglect to a child welfare worker. If there is immediate risk to the safety or well being of the child or youth then contact police.

Youth and children may be victimized by many different forms of abuse and neglect

such as physical, emotional and sexual harm.

Children and youth may disclose directly to adults the abuse they face at home or make third-party statements in reference to themselves. There may also be physical and behavioural indications that a child or youth is facing abuse and neglect. By themselves, warning signs do not prove abuse or neglect, but should be brought to the attention of a child welfare worker for proper assessment.

Some physical indications may include: injuries at different stages of healing, injuries in unusual places such as the ears, neck, trunk etc. or injuries that pattern looks like it may have been caused by an object. There are also a number of behavioural and emotional indications that may suggest the child is facing abuse or neglect.

It is important to remember that the totality of the child’s condition be assessed by a professional to determine potential harm if direct harm is not observed.

Please contact the Dawson Creek RCMP by dialling 9-11 or 250-784-3700 if you fear for a child or youth’s immediate safety, if there are non-immediate concerns then please contact the Ministry of Child & Family Development.

The Mirror’s serial comic strip for 2023 will be War on Crime

War on Crime was conceived, at least in part, by FBI director Edgar J. Hoover, who intended it as a public relations exercise. It was designed to counteract the current portrayals of G-men as lone mavericks. Instead, the strip showed the FBI as a formidable and well-oiled organization that was under the direct control of the director.

The strip launched on May 18, 1936 appearing in 45 newspapers. It was written by crime reporter Rex Collier, who was a personal friend of Hoover. The illustrations were initially provided by Kemp Sterrett who after a year was replaced by Jimmy Thompson.

All the stories featured in the War on Crime were real-life cases, and personally vetted by Hoover. The strip chronicled the demise of such infamous characters as: Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson and John Dillinger.

The strip finished its run on January 22, 1938.

Common Toxic Houseplants

DR. CARMEN SCHNEIDER

Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic

Over the last several years there has been a large increase in number of calls to Pet Poison Helpline about toxic houseplant ingestions – likely since many people are acquiring plants and animals. Whenever you are unsure if a plant (or any other item/toxins) your pet has ingested is toxic, the best step is to call Pet Poison Helpline (800-213-6680). They have experts that will be able to tell you if you need to seek emergency care or if you are able to monitor them at home. There is a fee for this service you have to pay over the phone. If they advise you to be seen by your vet clinic, they will also be able to tell your veterinarian the best course of treatment for that toxin which means the ideal care can be delivered much faster.

drinking and urination and eventually they will stop urinating all together. If treatment is initiated within 18 hours prognosis is usually good.

Sago palm:

This plant is commonly grown outside in tropical locations but recently sold in stores as a house plant. The fruit is the most toxic part but all parts of this plant have toxic components. This plant can cause liver failure in cats and dogs so should also be treated seriously and aggressively. First clinical signs are vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.

Succulents:

Many succulents are considered toxic but generally do not cause any serious effects. Mild stomach upset is often all we see. These can often be monitored at home.

Rododendrum/Monstera and Azaleas:

This family of plants is another that generally just causes mild stomach upset. With large ingestions it can have more serious effects. If the animal vomits several times they should be seen by a veterinarian.

Araceae plants:

Examples:

Lilies:

Lilies are likely the most commonly known toxic houseplant due to how serious it’s ingestion can be. Around Easter is the most common time we see this toxicity. Lilies are only toxic to cats and not dogs. It is only the true Lily of the Lilium spp that are toxic. Examples are Easter, Tiger, Japanese show, Rubrum, and Day lilies. Others such as the Peace lily and Calla lily are not of the Lilium family and are not included in this group (although also considered toxic but much more mild and not from the same compounds). The concern with true lilies is that they are toxic to the kidneys in cats. All parts of the plant are toxic and a very small amount of ingestion can be toxic. This means these plants should never share a home with cats even if you think they should be out of reach. If you think your cat could have gotten into lilies they need to be seen by a clinic immediately even if there are no clinical signs yet. If we wait for clinical signs to start, chance of getting them through it without any permanent damage is lower so these should be aggressively treated as soon as possible. First clinical signs are usually vomiting and lethargy which usually starts within 6 hours of ingestion, after that we see increased

Soluble calcium-oxalate containing plants: Examples: star fruit, shamrock plant. These are usually not a concern in small animals as it requires a lot of ingestion to be toxic. Large amounts of ingestion can cause kidney failure so any animal that is dehydrated or has previous kidney issues is at higher risk. Of course this is not a comprehensive list of plants that are considered toxic.

The ASPCA has a great lists of toxic and non-toxic plants for dogs, cats and horses that includes indoor and outdoor plants.

Northeast BC drug runners arrested

B.C.’s gang task force says 23 people are facing charges after a sweeping bust of a drug network in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, and Fort Nelson.

In a release, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia says 13 search warrants were executed in the three communities over three months between Oct. 13, 2022, and Jan. 23, 2023.

Among the items seized were 10 kilograms of cocaine, three kilograms of methamphetamine, three kilograms psilocybin mushrooms, and 17 kilograms of marijuana.

Also seized was $165,000 in cash, 34 firearms, a cocaine press, and 3,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes, along with several vehicles, paraphernalia, ammunition, body armour, tasers, and brass knuckles.

“These arrests have resulted in the significant disruption of an entrenched organized crime group in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson,” Cpl. Madonna Saunderson of the North District RCMP said in a news release. “CFSEU BC brings the necessary resources and skill set to ensure detachments are supported in any efforts to tackle large scale drug trafficking operations.”

RCMP officers from Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, and

Fort Nelson RCMP helped the investigation.

Among the firearms seized were eight hand guns, 16 long guns, eight shotguns, two collapsible rifles, according to the CFSEUBC. Among the seized vehicles were a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette, a 2017 Jaguar F-Pace, a 2016 Dodge Ram Crew Cab, a 2013 Chevy Cruze, and a 2020 GMC AT4 pickup truck, the agency said.

The 23 people arrested have been released pending approval of charges, the agency said, adding the investigation continues.

“This collaborative effort led by CFSEU-BC unveiled an alleged drug trafficking network in the provinces North District, giving CFSEU-BC an opportunity to disrupt organized groups causing harm to the communities of the Peace Region,” Insp. Joel Hussey, operations officer for CFESU-BC, said in a statement.

“We remain committed to working with our law enforcement partners across the province to target those who pose the greatest risk to public safety due to their involvement in gangrelated activities. Police in British Columbia are unified in our resolve to suppress, disrupt, and prevent groups who show such wanton disregard for the well-being of our citizens.”

KristineViolaKezer

It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kristine Viola Kezer of Dawson Creek, BC. She will be dearly missed by an abundance of individuals who ventured through life with her; Her Family, friends, many co-workers, and anyone who came across her path. Many of us can agree that Kristine sought after meaningful life experiences no matter the outcome. Those of who were lucky to be a part of her life, will forever carry an exceeding amount of gratitude for the time we did cherish with her. She had a smile and a contagious laugh that could fill any room with immediate joy. Her laugh resonates for miles and miles when reminiscing the greatest of times. Her presence made you feel at home and to completely be yourself. She was known to wear her heart on her sleeve and help anyone she could, no matter if even herself were struggling too. She was truly beautiful inside and out, with a heart of gold. She made many memories along the way, mostly on the road blasting her favourite tunes and singing her heart out being her gypsy self, travelling from one city to the next. Visiting all her many friends and family and gifting them with gifts she had ordered online or something she seen in a store and knew you just had to have it. You could always find Kristine with all the people she loved. Or she as making magic in the kitchen where she worked many years as a chef all over BC and Alberta. This is where co-workers soon became friends and family to her. She had

a reputation for having the best style, music and food in all the area, she never had to look for work it came to her. She was one of the best as she would say! Many of us have so many memories of baking, cooking, singing, shopping and road tripping with Kristine, memories we will all cherish. Her style and beauty was like no other, she was original and one of a kind. You could always count on her to have a good time whatever it was, and you just knew it would be memorable. We are all better people to have known her and carry her memory with us daily. If we had to write all the people, places and things Kristine was good at and loved, it would be pages long. We ask everyone to hold onto those memories, think of her often. Laugh, cry and lean on each other in these harder times as we navigate through the loss of someone so special and so loved. We all love you Kristine and you are missed and loved endlessly.

Celebration of life to be announced at a later date.

Donations can be made to the food bank or Salvation Army in memory of Kristine.

Electors in Area C head to the polls in February

A by-election is being held on February 25, 2023 for Electoral Area C Director. The position fell vacant after the BC Supreme Court ruled the October 15, 2022 vote invalid due to issuance of ballots to electors outside of Electoral Area C. The petition was submitted to the Court by the PRRD following a recount.

You may be eligible to vote in the by-election as a resident elector if you reside in Electoral Area C, or as a non-resident property elector if you own property within the voting jurisdiction but do not reside within it. The candidates for the by-election, in order of nomination filling, are Brad Sperling and Suzanne Haab.

Parcel tax roll review panel set

The PRRD will hold a parcel tax roll review panel meeting at 9:30am on February 23. The panel will review any proposed changes to the parcel tax rolls for a number of sewer and water services.

Parcel taxes are local government taxes levied on a unit, frontage or area of a property. Property owners have the right to review the rolls for accuracy and request a correction by February 21, to be considered by the panel. To learn more visit prrd.bc.ca or call 250-784-3200.

Much work has been done on the new Chetwynd Public Library since the groundbreaking event in May 2022. The 8,600 facility being constructed northeast of the Chetwynd & District Recreation Centre, is following a ‘living room of the community’ design concept while meeting the National Energy Code and BC Energy STEP Code.

The Chetwynd Library Advisory Committee, with members from the Library Board, District of Chetwynd Council, Library Director and Area E Director from the PRRD, are providing their recommendations and feedback to ensure the building will be designed according to the needs of the community.

The library will feature a children’s program room and reading/play area, teen reading and lounge area, adult reading and lounge area, public computer area, meeting space, makerspace and virtual reality room, multi-purpose spaces, cafe and open seating, outdoor patio, more storage and a storytelling space.

Work completed:

• Permitting

• Asphalt removal, installation of water/sewer/storm sewer

• Foundation work

• Blueskin (water-resistive barrier), tile and backfill

• Plumbing rough-ins, slab prep and slab poured

• Erection of glulam (engineered wood beam) structure

To view board and committee meeting dates and agendas, visit: prrd.bc.ca/agendas-minutes/

Work planned for next reporting period:

• Installation of structural insulated roof panels
