Students at Parkland Elementary in Farmington had a unique opportunity to share the school’s cross-country and biathlon ski track with their athlete mentor, Canadian Olympian Brittany Webster. Webster is a four-time Canadian Nationals gold medalist, World Cup competitor, and was part of Canada’s crosscountry ski team at the Olympics in Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014. She has been in close contact with students at Parkland Elementary via Skype since the beginning of the school year as part of the Classroom Champions program, which pairs Olympians and Paralympians with high-need schools. On March 3, Webster flew via an Encana charter from Calgary to Grande Prairie, before driving to Parkland Elementary to meet with the children in the classroom. “It’s an amazing experience,” she said, “and for me to see how much I am able to give the kids is awesome, it’s really great to see. Especially reaching out to communities like Dawson
Creek, where the opportunity to have access to things like this isn’t there all the time.” Webster is no rookie to the Classroom Champions program. She has partnered with a number of classroom in Grande Prairie, and with the Devereaux School in Arras. American Olympic bobsledder Steve Mesler started the international program in 2009. Webster says she had the chance to meet Mesler at a photo shoot in 2010, and as he explained the program to her, she was “hooked.” “It’s a big deal for [the kids],” Webster said, “and this school has been amazing because they have been able to bring out a snow machine and build a track.” Webster works with students on topics like goal setting, and perseverance in the face of adversity, while emphasizing a firm sense of friendship and fair play in sport. Students at the school informed Webster about the track during a Skype call in December and asked her to come try it out for herself, leading to this week’s visit. When asked how long he’s been hunting, Tim Schram says as long as he can remember. “Like, as long as I can remember,” he emphasizes. “My children are no different. My son turned six today, it’s his birthday and my daughter is four. I’ve got pictures of them when they couldn’t walk and I had them out hunting. I backpacked them around. My son shoots a 22. He’s all over it, he loves it.” For Schram, hunting and fishing are a means of “getting away from town, getting off the iPad and the Internet and the texting. It’s pretty real out there and it’s quality time, it’s great stuff.” Schram co-owns Corlane Sporting Goods with his brother and sister Rod and Brenda and has been working there, on and off, since his father Jack bought it from the original owners and namesakes Carl Cortmeyer and Jack Lane.

“I was probably six or seven sweeping floors and cleaning ashtrays, that’s how it starts,” he says. Schram’s family moved to Dawson Creek in 1961from Vernon for his father’s job as a department manager at the Hudson’s Bay Company. “He was either going to quit his job or kill his boss, so he decided to quit,” says Schram. Jack purchased the established sporting goods store shortly after. “We were selling jock straps and hockey sticks and curling supplies, everything back then. It was a full spectrum store,” says Schram. “It’s a second generation family business and we’ve built it up into what we are today.” With seven gunsmiths on staff, Corlane Sporting Goods is now the largest custom gun shop in Canada. The Dawson Creek store celebrated its bicentennial last year, something co-owner Schram says is a significant landmark of their presence in the town. “I had an 80 year old in today, he came in and

You don’t hear of kids getting out of school, jumping up and down, dying to be a gunsmith,” says Schram. “It’s not a recognized profession in Canada.” Corlane’s head gunsmith is a former aircraft maintenance instructor at Northern Lights College. “The skills he brings to the table are phenomenal,” says Schram. “He’s brilliant.” There is also a lifelong tool and dye maker, and a man who worked for SIG in Germany. “When you start adding all those skillsets up, combined there’s a lot of things that we can offer to our customers,” said Schram. “If we sell buddy a rifle today and it has a small glitch or problem with it, more often than not we try and fix it and get him out the door with a smile on his face, today. Right now.” Schram says that being able to service the customers’ needs on-site, rather than sending away for repairs, isn’t something most stores offer. Both in employees and customers, Schram says the appreciation for hunting and fishing culture is evident. “The clientele that are walking in the door are here because they want to be here theyre not here because the transmission just blew up on their $60,000 truck,” says Schram. “We’re adding lei-

It’s kind of nice when you can build up that kind of reputation in the community. We’re the trusted professionals. Three and four generations have been shopping at Corlane.” Owning the high-end sporting goods store wasn’t something Schram was on a direct path to, he says. “We were a hunting, fishing and camping family but I had no idea what I was going to do,” he says. “It just kind of turned out that way.” Just before quitting a job of three years at the coalmines in Tumbler Ridge, Schram says he approached his parents about the possibility of buying them out of the store. “They said, “If you want it, absolutely, we can figure it out,” he says. “My brother, he was actually working here at the time and he was all for it.” Rod has been gunsmithing for 35 years and runs the store’s gun shop. Within the shop Schram says there is a huge amount of talent that is somewhat unique in Canada. “Gunsmiths are kind of a dying breed; you don’t see them, you don’t hear of

We have 21 of the 29 American big game species in B.C., and most of them are up here in this corner of the province. As far as hunting is concerned, there’s not a lot of better places to go.” Having been in the industry so long, Schram says he will see a regular hunter stop for a number of years and then get back into it again with their children. “The hunting in the Peace River area, we have it all up here and we can cater to the local consumers. I have a pile of local customers, long time faithful customers, second and third generation – we’ve been here long enough,” says Schram. “In a perfect world, one or both my children will take over this business. That’s kind of a dream of mine, but, who knows. I would love to see it.”

We cannot keep up with the demand of what goes on back there,” he says. “We’re not just Dawson, we’re cross country. We have a webpage and that’s huge.” Since narrowing their focus to hunting and fishing goods, Corlane has become the exclusive Canadian dealer of Huskimaw – high-end rifle scopes. Although Corlane is distributing nationwide through their website and growing E-commerce business, Schram says their

The definition of what it is to be a man has changed for Rolly Lumbala and Matt McGarva over the last few years. The two BC Lions players were in Dawson Creek this week to break the silence on violence against women, with presentations to the community and high school students throughout the region. Since going through the training associated with the “Be More than a Bystander” program, McGarva and Lumbala have shifted perspective in their own minds and have come to realize how you treat women says a lot about who you are as a person. Being a man to them now means having the courage to stand-alone and call out inappropriate behaviour directed towards women. “We’re trying to bring awareness to have more men step up to the cause,” Lumbala said.

Local News BCWF wants government to repeal the changes and impose a quota for non-resident hunters and guide-outfitters to a maximum of 10 per cent of the wildlife harvest for moose and elk, and 25 per cent for sheep, bears, and goat led the charge against the changes that have been put into place by the B.C. government. According to the BCWF, resident hunters spend over $230 million a year in local communities on hunting-related activities and contribute $9 million a year towards conservation work through license

Construction work is progressing well on the Dawson Creek/ Chetwynd Area Transmission Project (DCAT).

Between mid-March and early April, some helicopter work will be taking place along the DCAT right-of-way, as follows: Second half of March: The initial stages of conductor stringing will be taking place on the west segment of DCAT. You may notice helicopters working between the new Shell Groundbirch Substation site (Highway 97, just west of 281 Road) and the new Sundance Lakes Substation site (Highway 97 about 19 km east of Chetwynd). First half of April: Helicopters will be used for an aerial survey of the entire DCAT line, from the Dawson Creek Substation to the Sundance Lakes Substation site. This will involve several flights along the right-of-way over a period of about four days. Please note that helicopter work is weather dependent, so all dates are approximate.

Clark represented the Dawson Creek Sportsman’s Club at the March 2 rally in Victoria. “The guys [guide-outfitters bring in] might buy a beer or a magazine in an airport, but they are picked up by the guide-outfitter and taken right out to camp,” Clark said. “A lot of the guide-outfitters are owned [by interests] outside of the country, or outside of the province, and that’s exactly where the profits go.” Despite the continuing protest, Steve Thomson, Minister of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations — the minister responsible for the changes — maintains that the new allocation is fair for all hunters, and that he has no plans to make any further compromise. “Many of the popular biggame species are not affected at all,” Thomson said, “including mule deer, white-tailed deer, most Rocky Mountain elk populations and black bear. That said, I am sensitive to concerns of resident hunters.” Hunter Al Martin has a different take. He says a disproportionate amount — up to 40 per cent — of valuable species like mountain sheep, mountain goats, grizzly bears, moose, elk, caribou and bison are allocated for non-resident hunters. “We don’t think this is an appropriate reflection of resident priority or the recognition of how much resident hunters contribute to the local economy through expenditures on vehicles, a variety of equipment, and services,” Martin said. The BCWF wants the government to repeal the changes. It wants a limit imposed for nonresident hunters and guide-outfitters to a maximum of 10 per cent of the wildlife allocation harvest for moose and elk, and 25 per cent for sheep, bears, and goats. Thomson says this won’t be happening. “Now that a decision is made, I am hopeful that resident hunters and the guide-outfitter community can work together with government,” he said. For Clark, it’s a matter of keeping the province’s resources in the hands of the people that live here. “It’s privatizing hunting and making it for people [that] come from out of province getting precedence over residents,” he said. “A lot of us that do hunt here want stuff for the freezer. These out-of-country people want their trophy. It puts money in the government coffers because of the fees for being an out of province hunter, but it doesn’t put money into economy.” dcreporter@dcdn.ca

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lester Edward Heaton after losing his battle with cancer. He was born November 19, 1939 and passed on March 4, 2015 at Hospice House in Vernon, BC. He will be remembered by his loving wife of 53 years Jean, his 3 children Ed (Penny), Kathy (Kelly), Ron (Sandy), 7 grandchildren, Brian (Shawna), Sheena, Jenn (Brad), Amy, Greg (Amanda), Jessica, Haley, and 3 great grandchildren, Solara, Brooklynn, and Dax.
