As she reads through the yellowing newspaper cut-outs and typed pages that tell the stories of her father and half-brother’s lives, Monyeen Ollenberger has a few stories of her own. At 82 years old, Monyeen has lived her whole life in the Peace Country; first in North Rolla where, as the daughter of a rodeo pioneer, she grew up in the height of the Yeagers Rodeo. Her father, John Yaeger was born in Black Hills,

Two years ago Monyeen was recognized with a plaque for her family’s contribution to rodeo in the region - she wasn’t much of a horse person, although she rode to school everyday. John Yaeger was a true rodeo pioneer, settling a farm in North Rolla where he advertised a job for a farm cook. Dawson Creek Gun Show Draws Huge Crowd
Over $30,000 raised for Sportsman's Club Alaska Highway News
For the 38th year, the Dawson Creek Sportsman's Club came in guns-a-blazing, attracting vendors, sportsmen and sportswomen throughout Western Canada. The show drew about 5,000 people, and raised north of $30,000 for the club's coffers, according to club president Andy Waddell. By 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning — just an hour and a half after opening — 1,000 people had already passed through the Encana Events Centre doors. There were roughly 245 vendors at this year’s event, which is about average, according to Waddell. “I had a vendor from as far away as Manitoba. They came from all over B.C., all over Alberta, [and] one or two from Saskatchewan,” he said. “We’re drawing from all of Western Canada.” Most of the money the club raised will go towards building a 50-metre indoor shooting range next to the clubhouse and an outdoor range at Riley’s Crossing. “If I get the [Fair Share] funding I just applied for, we would be breaking ground in June,” Waddell said.
The plan is to have the new facility enclosed from the elements by fall, so that work can be completed over the winter. Just shy of 5,000 people bought tickets for the event. Waddell says about 3,500 attended on Saturday and 1,400 on Sunday. Those numbers are down by about 500 from last year’s attendance. In addition to the $30,000 raised for the club by ticket sales and vendor fees, the club brought in $13,000 through raffles and a 50/50 draw. The largest prize, a complete moose hunting camp — including a tent, twoburner propane stove, tables, chairs and insulated hunting gear — sold over 700 tickets. Next up for the club is the 18th annual Mother’s Day clay shoot benefit, held each year at Riley’s Crossing in support of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital Foundation. For more information on the event, contact the foundation at 250-784-7355. “Overall, it was a huge success,” Waddell said.

The Yaeger Brothers Freighting Outfit continued on with contracts until 1922 and the month-long trips on horseback were far from easy. “He told me the story: it was 73 below when they crossed Nig Creek and he slept in Spruce bows and it was cold, 73 below,” she said. “He wanted my children to all see it, so I got busy and I got somebody.” While her father was farming and freighting, Monyeen’s mother also took a job in Watson Lake, Yukon. “She took a job for $6 a day, baking 600 pies a day,” says Monyeen. Arthetta moved to Canada with Danny after divorcing her husband; he would eventually choose to take the Yaeger name. Monyeen’s neighbour helped her put her father and brother’s stories on paper and she has many copies, one of each that she hands over and says I have to read. John Yaeger, along with his two brothers, established a freighting company and took on a contract with the Hudson Bay Company in 1915, hauling supplies to Fort
Monyeen continued school until Grade 12, while her brother took a different path - he was the wild one. Danny Yeager was Monyeen’s half brother and the two grew up on the North Rolla farm where their father competed in the rodeo and along with his brothers supplied the livestock for some of the earliest stampedes. Many would come out to the rodeo events and Monyeen says it was lifestyle that attracted Danny. “I only had one brother,” says Monyeen, and although he died young, at the age of 32, they were very close. “My dad taught him and he rode, my dad got a letter from the rodeo association in Rose Prairie about Danny coming up to ride,” says Monyeen. “My dad said to him ‘if you buck off that horse don’t come crying to me’.” Monyeen says Danny was nine years old at the time and he rode the horse for 16 seconds. There was no prize money, but everyone at the event put into a collection and Danny took home $185. “He bought himself a cowboy hat and bought you a doll,” adds in Calvin Ollenberger, Monyeen’s son who she now lives with. She nods, remembering the time and says she didn’t have things like dolls back then, there was nowhere to buy them. Danny was four years older than Monyeen and left home at 13 years old to follow the rodeo circuit. “He was in Peace River in 1946 and he took the all around cowboy championship - he was only 18 at the time,” says Monyeen. Danny was one of few to ride Teepee Creek Terror, which he did in 1956 for $100 according to Monyeen’s recounted story. His friends had also bet him another $350 that he would not be able to ride the untamable horse, but he did. “My dad nearly had a fit when we were down at Teepee Creek,” says Monyeen. “They hauled [Danny] away to the hospital and Continued on Page 7

DCMC gearing up for season B yron Hackett
Alaska Highway news
It is still a more than a month out from the first official race for the Peace Motocross Association (PMA), but that hasn’t stopped the Dawson Creek Motocross Club (DCMC) from putting plans in place for the upcoming season. While the local Dawson Creek club hasn’t been able to put in any work on their track just yet, they will host the second leg of the PMA tour for two days on May 23 and 24. Current president of the DCMC Reid Lepine said riders are itching to get out on the track in Dawson Creek, and are anxiously awaiting the first race in Taylor on May 10. “That’s an annual running race that’s been going for as long as I can remember,” he said. “Oh yeah, you bet, just about all of our club members go to that.” That’s about 25 riders in total that Dawson Creek will send to the first race of the PMA circuit, a number that has been pretty consistent since Lepine has been involved with the club. Although, last year interest faded when the track was shutdown because of construction on the water treatment plant, Lepine believes 2015 can be a successful year if the club can get the support of the community. “Our whole track was shut down due to a water treatment thing [last year],” he said. “We have to go out and start doing work on it. Everybody is trying to help and
we are doing our best to get the race ready. We are trying to get people to realize that we need help.” Only parts of the track can be ridden right now and Lepine noted work will have to increase when things dry up in order to have the race ready for May 23. “It’s been too wet, we can’t get equipment out there quite yet,” He said of the area on the track that needs to be repaired. “Our first 'work bee' is April 18. That will be when we basically start putting a month into getting ready for the race.” The long weekend race will be the first time the club has hosted a double header race, and despite being rained out for several races in the last five years, Lepine was able to get a big name to attend the show that he believes will increase popularity. Brent Worrall of Canadian Moto Show will be in attendance for the Dawson Creek PMA race. Worrall suffered a major spinal cord injury several years ago while racing and has since turned his attention to giving the sport national exposure. “I became friends with him and the PMA sponsors his show,” Lepine said. “He interviews riders from the North on his show and it is becoming Canadian wide… He’s kind of a big deal in the motorsports [world].” Anyone wishing to get involved with the PMA can visit their website www.peacemotocrossassociation.com or in Dawson Creek can contact Reid Lepine rlepine63@ gmail.com. sports@ahnfsj.ca

Despite the illness, Danny made it back home to see their father’s last rodeo ride at 65 years old. “My brother came up from Kamloops and watched my dad riding his bucking horse,” says Monyeen. “He came to George Graham’s place and he looked me up and down and said that he wanted to be at the Yaeger Rodeo of East Doe River.”

Prostate Cancer
The prostate is a nut-sized gland that is part of the male reproductive system. It secretes fluid that makes up part of the semen. The prostate wraps around the urethra like a doughnut. The urethra is the tube that carries urine and sperm out of the body to the tip of the penis. Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting men. One in 7 men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. Symptoms In the early stages, prostate cancer often causes no signs or symptoms. Symptoms begin to appear when the tumour increases in size and puts pressure on the urethra. At that point, men may experience difficult, painful or frequent urination. The following symptoms may also be observed: • Urinary urgency • Weak or intermittent urine flow • Feeling that the bladder does not empty completely • Blood in urine or sperm • Painful ejaculation Some of the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer are the same. The reason is that as men age, the prostate tends to increase in size, blocking the urethra. Risk factors Risk factors that increase the risk of developing prostate cancer include: • Being over the age of 65 years • Having a close family relative who has had prostate cancer • Being of African descent • Eating a high fat diet Having benign prostatic hyperplasia does not raise your risk of developing prostate cancer. Screening and diagnosis It is usually recommended that screening for prostate cancer start at age 50. The doctor generally performs a digital rectal examination and, if any abnormalities are detected, a PSA (prostatespecific antigen) blood test is ordered. A variety of imaging techniques can also be used to confirm a diagnosis. Complications If the cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage, tumour cells may have already spread through blood circulation, encouraging the growth of other tumours.

The reason is that as men age, the prostate tends to increase in size, blocking the urethra. Treatment Prostate cancer grows very slowly and is often detected early. which means that treatment is often quite successful Treatment options include radiation therapy (destruction of cancer cells using radiation), hormone therapy or surgery. In some situations, it is preferable to adopt and wait and watch approach and to treat only if necessary. Prevention When it comes to preventing prostate cancer, diet plays a very important role. Avoiding fats and increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables is key. It has been shown that lycopene (found in tomatoes among others) and all foods belonging to the cabbage family are especially beneficial in preventing prostate cancer. TRADE SHOW APRIL 17, 18, 19 Dawson Creek Did you Know?
By: Walter Schoen (Member since 1964) written in 2001 The Dawson Creek Kiwanis Club received its charter on Oct. 12 1957 with a membership of 34. One of the charter members was Sam Wilson in whose memory Wilson Way leading to the Kiwanis Enterprise Center was named. Another charter member, Peter Gibb, was honoured as Citizen of the year for his work in starting the Nawican Friendship Center with which the club was involved. Early fund raisers were an “Annual New Years Eve Kiwanis Club of Ball: Hats and NoveltiesFood and Mix supplied, Kazakoff Orchestra, all for $10.00 per couple.” Then followed the first of many Golf Tournaments and dances, “Refreshments served, $5.00 per couple.” In compliance with Kiwanis international rules, all funds raised through public functions must be spent on public service. At that time the club was involved in the organization of a Navy League, support of Sea Cadets, construction of a ball park west of what is now Ecole Frank Ross, contributing $200 to the city to build a bridge across the ravine there and plant about 125 trees in the park, other fund raisers followed; construction of garbage stands, sale of birthday calendars, sponsorship of events such as the Don Kossak choir and assorted raffles. Groups that have benefitted from funds raised have included 4-H, Minor Hockey, Little League, the Dawson Creek Public Library, Northern Lights musical presentations, and the Peace Country Arts Festival. Musical instruments were purchased for the elementary schools, supplies, provided for a special class in Pouce Coupe, and funds were provided for construction of a cabin at the School District’s camp at Gwillim Lake. The Kiwanis club started the first Senior Citizens drop-in center and helped with their move to larger quarters in a building at that time next to Aspol Motors. For several years the club sponsored an annual bicycle safety “Rodeo” in conjunction with the RCMP. The club also funded the purchase of the first jaws of Life rescue equipment for the city and later a newer replacement, donated a heart monitor to the Dawson Creek hospital and provided the ambulances with the first radio-telephones. The club also contributed $1000 to the construction of the present Golf Club, which was then promoted as a community center. Small fundraisers never provided enough money to help the above causes and many minor ones, so the Kiwanis Trade Fair was started in 1976, the brainchild
of Stan Sharkey and Maurice Farne. The first show was a learning experience for all, it raised all of $400. From that small beginning it gradually grew to the major event it is now. As a secondary fundraiser the Christmas Card Lane project was started under the presidency of Roy Craigan. This has grown to become a popular Christmas brightener in the city. Members of the club have participated in making pancake breakfasts during Bonanza Days, with clean up campaigns, Salvation Army kettles, Dawson Creek and food drives, serving “mooseburgers” to tourist caravans and assisting other organizations with fund drives. The Dawson Creek Kiwanis club was the sponsor of the Kiwanis Enterprise Center that has received international acclaim, was the first sponsor of the Kiwanis community Band that has carried Dawson Creek’s Banner to many places in B.C. and Alberta, including the Calgary Stampede, and during it’s second tour of Europe in 2001. Under the instigation of Kiwanian Jens Liebgott the club started the Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre when music was being phased out in the public schools. For several years the club has supported a toy and book library at the Child Development Center and been a major supporter of the Kiwanis Kids Choir under Judy McGowan’s direction. People may also have noticed a police car with the Kiwanis logo on it; the Club provides that vehicle for the community service person with the RCMP. Ongoing also is the presentation of scholarships and bursaries to graduating students and participant at the KPAC Talent shows. The Dawson Creek Kiwanis Club is part of Western Canada District which extends east to Thunder Bay, Ontario, and north to Hay River, NWT. As such, the club has carried the Dawson Creek Banner to many conventions, had two Lieutenant Governors for the western division, and sponsored the District Convention in 1991 which brought over 300 visitors to the city. Six of its members have been awarded the prestigious Mel Osborne Award for outstanding service. At its lowest point the club dropped to twelve members, but for several years has been between thirty and thirty-five. All are proud of their membership and the service the club provides. It is hoped that the coming Trade Fair will raise sufficient funds to carry on with these and other projects that are an important asset to the city.

People of the Peace The Way We Remember “I said she would arrive tomorrow,” says Monyeen. “He said, ‘I’m going to give her some money’ and he wrote her out a cheque for $3,000 to help with the funeral but then he paid for it all anyway.” Calvin says there were about 800 people at Danny’s funeral, but it was before he was born. “I took my two older kids and we went to the graveyard and Keen and those airplanes circled,” says Monyeen. There were many newspaper accounts of Danny’s fatal crash, ranging from local coverage to the Edmonton Journal - mostly

reporting his age to be 38 years old, which Monyeen has crossed out in her clippings and written 32 over top. Calvin points out that Danny lived a lot in his short 32 years. Monyeen was married young at 20 years old after meeting her husband Frank John Ollenberger in a restaurant in Dawson Creek. She says, “He came up and introduced himself.” Prodded by Calvin as to whether it was love at first sight, she says not quite, “It took a while.” Monyeen worked as a secretary at Rolla Traditional School for 25 years, and for two years as a teacher’s aid at Canalta Elementary - she moved to Dawson Creek in 1990 after her husband passed away in 1989.
Monyeen retired when she was 59 years old and moved back to Rolla to be closer to family - she has five children, four daughters and a son, Calvin. They live out off of the Old Alaska Highway now but Monyeen says she still remembers and goes back to visit Rolla. “Oh yeah, we go back there and see people,” she says. Monyeen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease but much of her family’s story has been told by local historian Dorthea Calverley, as well as by herself. Some pieces might now be missing and years later, some details might have changed but at least the story has been told. - See more at: http://www. alaskahighwaynews.ca/regional-news/fortnelson/monyeen-ollenberger-the-way-weremember-1.1148883#sthash.9J5u5TbC. dpuf

Elementary School On Wednesday representatives of Murphy Oil stopped by Devereaux Elementary school to see the impact their support has had on student learning and to continue their support of the school’s students. Murphy Oil has been an ongoing contributor to the availability and access to technology for Devereaux students. Their contributions have facilitated the creation of mobile computing and iPad labs. These enable all students to access a computing device on an as needed basis. Additionally, the support Murphy has provided has seen the incorporation of Mimio boards in each classroom. These allow for interactive and hands on student learning with a touch screen presentation/collaboration technology. Today, Murphy Oil has kindly donated $15000 dollars towards continued support of new technology, facilitating student learning at Devereaux. The school will be exploring with staff, students, the school PAC and the School District to determine what technologies and/or upgrades will be best incorporated at the school. The Devereaux community is extremely grateful for the generous support Murphy Oil is providing to children.

Danny did a great deal of work with wellknown Fort Nelson outfitter Robert Keen, who would remain a good friend of the family after Danny’s death. “Bobby Keen flew his outfit down at the funeral,” Monyeen says. On hearing of Danny’s death, Monyeen says Keen called down to them and asked her when her mother would be returning home from Watson Lake.

Wilbur John Berge
Wilbur John Berge was born on the Berge farm in Edfield, Saskatchewan on July 11, 1928. He was the first child of Rose and Howard. His brother Gerald was born 10 years later in 1938. His schooling was in Edfield from Grades 1 to 9, and later helped his Dad, Howard, on the farm. Wilbur married Mary Panasiuk in 1949. Their first child, Garnet, was born, followed by Arlene and Cheryl. Howard and Rose, along with Wilbur and Mary, made the move to the Peace Country in the fall/early winter of 1949. Howard had relatives already in the Clayhurst area and they spent the winter with them. In March of 1950, Howard and Rose purchased four quarters of land in the Lakeview District, north of Dawson Creek, and the Berge Farm was established in the Peace River Country. Wilbur loved music and played in various bands throughout the years, playing for many dances at local community halls and events. His main instrument was the fiddle, which he started playing at the age of 10, but also enjoyed the electric guitar, both of which were self-taught. Wilbur was a member of the Citizen’s Band Radio Club in the 70’s and formed many lifelong friendships travelling yearly to many CB Jamborees. His CB handle was “Wildcat” and that name followed him wherever and whatever he did. Wilbur formed a musical duo with Ross Rollins, and the two of them travelled and played their music to many places, including into the United States. They even produced a 45 record of two of their songs and had a professional photo done of the two of them, autographed to hand out at the venues they played at. Wilbur and his brother, Gerald, ventured into a new Dawson Creek business during the 70’s. Western Auto Supply sold Arctic Cat snowmobiles and accessories, car stereo equipment, as well as having a muffler shop and gas station. In the mid-70’s Wilbur decided to retire from farming and moved to Dawson Creek to be able to run his pilot car business. His son Garnet was now farming the land. Wildcat Pilot Car Services was formed, and Wilbur had a fleet of trucks that were kept busy going up and down the Alaska Highway. In addition, Wilbur incorporated tow trucks and picker trucks into this business, which was 3-Way Towing, as well as steam trucks and mechanical services to complete the operation. After separating from his wife, Mary, Wilbur started to downsize his business, closing down the tow truck and steam cleaning portions, but he still kept on with his pilot cars. Shortly after, he met Kari Preston, and started a new chapter in his life. Wilbur and Kari moved to an acreage in Demmit around 1998 for a short while and then moved again to a quarter section farm a few miles away, and operated the pilot car business from there. Wilbur had a minor stroke in 1997, and a second stroke in 2003, which affected his health where he was unable to play the fiddle. He would often talk about how he missed being able to play the music he so loved. In 2008, it was decided it would be better to move back to Dawson Creek to be closer to the hospital and medical services, and his family. Wilbur and Kari had a house in the city, and many friends and family came to visit. Wilbur’s life was full and the legacy he leaves behind is his three children, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, and the many, many friends he made along the way. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Wilbur may be made by donation to the Dawson Creek & District Hospital Foundation Cancer Unit, 11100-13 Street, Dawson Creek, British Columbia V1G 3W8 A Celebration of Life service was held Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, British Columbia.
