numbers are in. School boards have to submit their numbers to the Ministry of Education by the end of September. SD 59 has been grappling with a transportation funding shortfall since the 2012-13 school year, when a 23 per cent cut to the province’s $3.3 million transportation budget was announced. Locally, that shakes out to a $750,000 cut to the busing budget. SD 59 has introduced fees for private school students who use the district’s buses to deal with the issue, along with fees for students in Chetwynd for in-town busing, at $20 per student or $50 per family.

Powell says the issue doesn't loom as large this year as it did three years ago, but is still a concern. “We think that there is still a shortfall,” he said. “Others have said, ‘no you get money (through funding protection),’ but we still think there is some issue there so we’re prepared to talk to the ministry about that.” In an Aug. 4 interview with the Alaska Highway News, newly minted Education Minister and South Peace MLA Mike Bernier vowed to take a hard look at why the funding changes were made. In an interview Tuesday afternoon, Bernier said his staff is looking into the matter to Continued on Page 5

Roch Boisvert will take over the position from Labatch on Sept. 8. Labatch moved to the Peace Region from the Prince George area. “I am not exactly sure [what’s next],” Labatch told the Alaska Highway News. “I tend to live my life based on gut feelings. They brought me here to the Peace and I felt directed here like I was meant

I just felt like it was time to shift.” Holding a Masters of Education in the Arts from Simon Fraser University, Labatch said she’d like to do more arts and cultural activities in Dawson Creek in the coming years. “I found people are extremely hungry for First Nations activities,” Labatch said. "Whenever I would bring my drum out, people [loved it]. I am an artist so I am going to be diving into some art projects.” While with NEAT, Labatch helped organize a water conference with the leadership students at Dawson Creek Secondary School’s Central Campus. The conference is going into its second year. “Last year we did a two-day conference and this year we’re shaking it up a bit,” Labatch’s former boss Karen MasonBennett said. “The goal is exploring water and the value of

Dawson Creek's non-profit on-call bus service is reducing its hours of operation as it struggles to stay open. In a letter to riders, Step Up N Ride announced it will only operate bus service for seniors and adults with dis-

Busing Continued from Page 2 bring about the information he says he’ll need before he can make any decisions on transportation funding. “This is a huge issue I know for a lot of rural school districts, not just 59,” Bernier said. “Before I can actually look at what the options are, I need to understand why the decisions were made. It wouldn’t be prudent on my part to make decisions without all the information. But as the MLA, I definitely did say that it is something that needs to be looked at and my position hasn’t changed as education minister.” Powell hopes that having the education minister in his backyard will help. “We’re hopeful that having MLA Bernier as the education minister will (help) get our point across a little more,” he said. “We had a productive conversation with him (last year) on several issues, and one of them was

transportation. When I spoke to him recently he said he hasn’t forgotten (that).” No new strategies have been discussed on how to deal with the funding shortfall. Last year, Powell told Alaska Highway News that SD 59 was considering advertising in schools, approaching the PRRD for Fair Share funding and potentially cutting some bus routes such as the dual credit bus from Chetwynd Secondary to Northern Lights College. Now, Powell says advertising in school gyms is something SD 59 will look at to support extra curricular activities instead of transportation. Discussions with the PRRD on the use of Fair Share have not taken place since “a couple of years ago” and the dual credit bus was renewed last year, but is up for review again in January.

It's not the first cut the non-profit has been forced to make in the past year. Step Up N Ride took one full-time bus off the road last year, McNalley said. In October, McNalley announced donations from local businesses would allow it continue operating. "We're financially okay because we've made the cuts," she said. "We're shortening the hours for one year to see how it goes." The city declined to increase its $25,500 grant to Step Up N Ride last year, citing fiscal concerns.

In the second year of combined racing in Chetwynd, about 500 Motocross racers from far and wide collected their bikes to rev alongside each other on the weekend. On August 29, the club held a British Columbia Motocross Association event, a circuit that welcomes racers from Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Terrace, Smithers, Ashcroft and Vanderhoof. Sunday was the final event of the Peace Motocross Association season after the year got started in Taylor and travelled to both Dawson Creek and Fort St. John throughout the season. Jason Berlinger, president of the Pine Valley Motorsports Club said the idea to combine the race has turned out to be a huge draw for the community. “Our goal was to utilize our central

location to both series and bring competition from all over the province and some of Alberta, for some great racing action and to bring awareness to both racing series,” Berlinger said in an email. “Our race ended up being the season finale for both sanctioned parties and with great track conditions and cooperative weather, the event went off without a hitch and was a perfect way to cap off the 2015 Motocross season.” On Saturday in the BCMA races, below is a list of the winners: Super Mini- Daniel Elmore Vet Junior- Jason Ruecker Vet Senior- Cole Lewis MX-3 Beginner- Paul Hayward MX-3 Junior- Nathan Johnson MX-3 intermediate-Tim Doll MX-3 Pro- Dallas Taylor MX-2 Junior- Lucas Dunaway MX-2 Inter.-Jonah Brittons MX-2 Pro-Logan Fulcher

The owner of a local construction company "lost his cool" when he chased down and punched a quad rider who injured his young nephew last summer, a judge in Dawson Creek heard this week. Carl Chandler pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing bodily harm in a Dawson Creek provincial court room Tuesday. He was charged after assaulting Kazin Samuelson, 21, who was earlier found guilty of dangerous driving after crashing into Chandler's 13-year-old

nephew. On June 1, 2014, Chandler and a group of around a dozen riders were out for a Sunday quad ride near Radar Lake south of Dawson Creek, the court heard. Near the Bear Mountain wind turbines, Chandler's party encountered another group of quadders. The circumstances are unclear, but Crown counsel Tamera Golinsky said the situation was tense, with some "pushing and swearing" between members of the groups. Some of the party had been drinking, though the court noted Chandler had not con-

sumed any alcohol. The two groups eventually broke up, with Chandler's group returning to the main road to town. While they were stopped, Samuelson came down the road and drove "aggressively" through the centre of the group, "clipping or running over" Chandler's nephew. It was not clear whether Samuelson was with the other group of quadders. Enraged, Chandler chased the man down the road to a field by the dangerous goods route, where Samuelson was thrown from his vehicle. Chandler caught

From the P harmacist’s File Irritable Bowel Syndrome

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is quite common. Those afflicted with IBS experience symptoms such as constipation or diarrhea, pain, abdominal cramps, distension and gas. Symptoms vary in intensity and can be temporary or permanent. They usually occur after a meal and patients feel relief after a bowel movement. They are thought to result from a modification of the normal contraction of the intestinal muscles. IBS is often associated with a psychological component: emotion and stress have an impact on the colon. The exact causes of IBS are still unknown. IBS is associated with much discomfort but does not cause other intestinal complications (no increased risk of cancer for example). Anyone experiencing IBS symptoms along with fever, bleeding, unexplained weight loss or persistent and severe pain should consult a physician. What are the treatment options? IBS should be diagnosed by a physician to make sure that all other possible causes for the symptoms were excluded. The treatment’s goal is to reduce and prevent symptoms. Unfortunately, not many drugs were shown to be effective. Dietary changes The best treatment to relieve symptoms of IBS remains changing the patient’s diet and eating habits. The patient should keep a journal, writing down all food eaten each day. Here is a list of foods often associated with symptoms of IBS: • foods with caffeine. such as coffee. tea or chocolate; • foods with artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and mannitol; • fatty foods; • spicy foods; • fried foods; • low-fibre foods; • foods containing grains, small pits or seeds; • cabbage, green cabbage, corn, legumes and onions;• oats; • prune juice; • oranges, lemons and grapefruits; • dairy products; • alcohol. A few simple diet changes can have a major impact on IBS. Certain measures even appear to have a calming effect: • Eat more low-fat and fibre-rich foods, such as whole grain cereals and breads, grapes, dates, almonds, prunes and as a general rule, more fruits and vegetables. Be careful however!

Srinivas Chalagalla B.Pharm., PhD

Increase your consumption slowly to prevent distension and diarrhea. • Drink plenty of water - between six and eight glasses a day. • Avoid large meals. • Eat at regular times. • Chew and eat slowly to avoid taking in air. Do not chew gum. Stress management We know that stress plays a major role in the appearance of symptoms. For this reason, patients should try to better manage their stress. Regular physical exercise (30 minutes per day) is recommended. Yoga, massage therapy, and meditation are other relaxation techniques that can be useful. Useful drugs Drugs are usually selected in function of the most severe symptom, either diarrhea or constipation. For those who suffer from constipation, the goal is to increase the rate of food transit across the intestine. Mild laxatives, such as lactulose and fibre supplements, are first-line agents. For those who suffer from diarrhea, the treatment’s goal is to slow the intestine’s movements. Drugs called antidiarrheal, such as loperamide (lmodium™) are used, antispasmodics, such as dicyclomine (Bentylol™) are sometimes recommended to relieve cramps. When a patient suffers from depression along with IBS, the physician may prescribe an antidepressant to help relieve anxiety and anguish and help relax the intestinal muscles. Among herbal products, peppermint oil may offer some relief, especially in patients with diarrhea. It appears to reduce intestinal cramps. The recommended dosage is 0.2 to 0.4 ml in capsules, three times a day, between meals. Finally probiotics or lactic ferments are sometimes used. These products contain live inoffensive bacteria similar to those found in yogurt. They are used to try to balance the intestine’s natural flora.
