On Thursday, the regional district moved to ask the province to restrict new drilling under Swan Lake, a seven square kilometre lake near the Alberta border. The move came in response a request from area resident Allen Watson that the PRRD take a position. Watson is a member of the Swan Lake Enhancement Society (SLES), a residents and water stewardship group. The society began a campaign to stop new drilling beneath the lake late last year, after learning mineral rights beneath Swan Lake were up for auction. Watson and 318 lake users signed a petition to oppose new fracking, saying the risks to the lake and its watershed were too great. The McLeod Lake Indian Band and Ducks Unlimited Canada have also voiced concerns about oil and gas activity in the area. Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead, Taylor Mayor Rob Fraser and rural director Dan Rose opposed asking the province to stop new fracking in the area. The three believed opposing fracking under the lake was a “slippery slope.”

“The first step is we restrict this area, then we say what about these rivers? Then what about this heritage site?” said Bumstead. “The minute we start to take the position that we’re opposed [to fracking] in a particular location, you just open the door.” Directors debated how far protections for bodies of water might go. “If you’re contaminating a body of water, it’s much more difficult to clean up, and that deserves some extra protection,” said rural director Karen Goodings, saying she would support wider prohibitions on drilling beneath freshwater. The board weighed the option of asking the Union of British Columbia Municipalities to support limits on drilling under freshwater. However, since the group only deals with province-wide issues impacting local governments, some directors worried this would amount to a ban on fracking. Pouce Coupe Mayor Bill Plowright, who also works in oil and gas, voted in favour of limits to drilling. “I work for a fracking com-

pany, so I’m cutting off my nose to spite my face here,” he said. “But what’s more important: the money, or the environment? “I believe [fracking is] environmentally friendly, but I think there are other things at stake when it comes to waterways,” he said. “If anyone in this room lived on that lake, there’s no way they’d want fracking under the lake.” Bradley Sperling, who represents the rural area outside Fort St. John, suggested creating “no drilling” zone around the lake, saying such a zone is in place around Charlie Lake. District staff are researching that possibility, but Watson said horizontal drilling could still tap gas beneath the

lake even if rigs were barred from the shores. Encana acquired the rights to drill under the southern section Swan Lake for $4.7 million in February, which includes part of a provincial park. Murphy Oil has drilled several wells beneath the north end of the lake without incident. The Oil and Gas Commission (OGC) maintains that oil and gas activity 2,600 metres below the lakebed poses almost no risk to the body of water, but at a community meeting earlier this year, an OGC official stopped short of guaranteeing the lake’s safety.

Pouce Coupe Mayor Bill Plowright votes in favour of asking the province to limit new fracking beneath Swan Lake. “I work for a fracking company, so I’m cutting off my nose to spite my face here,” he said. Main photo: Swan Lake Provincial Park. JONNY WAKEFIELD PHOTO

come to patrol the shores of the lake and provincial park twice this season, but that boaters are able to operate on the lake with impunity. That’s especially troubling when alcohol is involved. “Last summer was pretty bad,” he said. “It’s a wonder somebody didn’t get killed or hurt because of alcohol on the lake last year.” To contain the amount of shipborne drinking, police need to be able to go after boaters, he said. “If they’re out there drinking it up on the lake, and they come in to the dock and see an RCMP car, they’re not go-

ing to come in if they’ve got a bunch of empties in the boat,” he said. “And God help us if they throw the empties over the side, because that’s not good for the lake either.” North Peace RCMP have a boat and a marine operating certificate, Watson said, enabling them to check for alcohol and boating permits on Charlie Lake and other popular bodies of water. Not so in the South Peace. “They have neither down here. There isn’t a boat the RCMP can use, to my knowledge,” he said. It’s one of several rural policing issues raised at the re-

gional district in recent week. Also at Thursday’s meeting, the board signed off on an annual policing plan for local RCMP. In the area of Swan Lake, near Tomslake and the Alberta border, police visibility in communities is one of two priorities for RCMP, in addition to traffic safety. Watson said the area is currently patrolled by community watch groups, who report serious issues to the police. That’s not doing enough, he said. “Rural people pay a tax

rural policing, and we’re not getting the bang for the buck.”

have been left pondering the status of their season. That includes the largest collection of ice users, the Dawson Creek Minor Hockey Association. The DCMHA took to Facebook earlier this week to address a number of concerns

Staff Writer

While the Dawson Creek City Council has approved a bid to fix the broken chiller at Memorial Arena and plans to have repairs done by Oct. 31 at the latest, many ice users

From the P harmacist’s File Painful injury: Heat or Ice?

You just sprained or strained a muscle. What should you do? You know that some people use heat or ice to decrease the pain but you don’t know which one, or how or when to use it. Ice When an injury occurs, swelling develops almost immediately and persists for about 48 hours. During this initial period and as soon as possible, use ice to stop the swelling and to minimize pain. Apply ice for 10 to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours while awake, being careful not to apply it directly on the skin (to avoid frostbite) and not to exceed recommended application time. Do not apply heat during this period. Because of its cooling effect, ice reduces blood supply to the area that is injured, limits swelling, and reduces pain. This limits tissue damage as well as the risk of bleeding. Ordinary ice works very well, although there are synthetic substances available. Simply place a few whole or crushed ice cubes in a plastic bag and wrap it in a wet towel. Apply the ice to the injured area. If there is a lot of swelling, it may help to apply a pressure bandage as well and elevate the affected limb above the heart. Caution: Ice is not recommended if you have circulation problems, anemia, Raynaud’s disease or syndrome (abnormal closure of the blood vessels in response to cold), an open or infected sore or cold

Srinivas Chalagalla B.Pharm., PhD

urticaria. Heat The swelling usually stabilizes after about two days. The body then works to repair the damaged tissues and reduce the swelling. At this point, or later, if inflammation persists, apply heat to the injured area, since heat activates blood flow, facilitates the healing process, and relieves pain. Apply heat for 15 to 30 minutes, 4 times a day. Use moist heat preferably, from a hot water bottle, for example. Protect the skin from burns by wrapping the hot water bottle with a towel. Caution: Heat is not recommended if you have circulation problems, bleeding, an open or infected sore or a cancerous tumor where the heat is to be applied. Who and when to seek medical advice Consult a health care professional (ex.: physician, physiotherapist) if: • the measures above do not provide relief; • pain increases; • there is a loss of mobility in the affected area; • pain is disturbing sleep; • rest has not helped improve the situation. “Use this information intelligently and always exercise caution!”

There has been some concern that ice may cost more if teams are forced to play their home games in Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, Taylor or even Fort St. John. Brinsky is convinced this will likely not be the case. “Ice rates in neighbouring communities are typically lower than what he pay here in Dawson Creek so we might find a savings there, so they balance out and allow us to keep the numbers the same,” Brinsky noted to the Alaska Highway News in a phone interview about a potential change to registration fees and having to pay the cost of

that had been put forward by parents to the Board of Directors. Board of Director Shawn Brinsky put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions in order to help inform parents and ice users about what the associations knows about the upcoming season. Among those concerns, DCMHA has decided to keep fees the same this year as they have been in the past, but decided to extend the early registration deadline to July 31 in order to provide parents with a better picture about what the season will look like by that time.

referees travelling further to games. The foggy ice status has created significant concern for the board that minor hockey registration will be lower than usual this season, a problem that Brinsky saw when he lived in Fort Nelson. “When we lost our rink in [Fort Nelson] because a collapse and we lost our entire year,” he said. “We still facilitated minor hockey in Fort Nelson. Utilizing an outdoor rink and travel exclusively for all games… we took a significant hit [with registration] that even to this day you can see [there].” Another potential roadblock for the upcoming season that the DCMHA and their teams will face is the competitive groups have deadlines to submit ice availability in order to have schedules made for the upcoming season. “Typically in July, those leagues host their scheduling meetings where the different teams need to come with their ice slots available and a schedule can be made out,” he said. Brinsky remains unsure about what the DCMHA will do to help facilitate teams ice needs when league ice meetings take place later this summer. Currently the Oct. 31 completion date would also be a hindrance to competitive teams holding tryouts to select their roster. DCMHA hopes they can address this problem by using other arena facilities in the area to make their selections. “Our competitive programs start in the first week of September,” Brinsky said. Continued from Page 6 “Our recreational programs have historically started the first week in October. So no matter who you are you will be impacted from seven weeks to four weeks.” As an example, last season in the Edmonton Rural Bantam Hockey League in which the Dawson Creek Bantam Canucks played, their first home game was Oct. 5. In the All Peace Hockey League last season the first home game for a Dawson Creek team was Nov. 1. In the Pewee AA Northern Hockey League the first home game was Oct. 19. There are still plenty of questions that remain for the upcoming hockey season, but according to the association they remain committed to providing hockey for the 2015-2016 season. “Yes,” Brinksy wrote on the DCMHA Facebook page. “DCMHA is confident the city will complete the necessary work in time for there to be minor hockey in Dawson Creek.” sports@ahnfsj.ca

Ann StefAnyk 1917 ~ 2015

Ann Stefanyk, a long time resident of Bonanza, Alberta passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015 in Dawson Creek, B.C. at the age of 97 years. Ann was born and baptized as Hania Helen Mechaniuk to parents Angela (Nellie) and Max Mechaniuk on a small farm in Stuartburn, Manitoba on August 16, 1917. She was the eldest of eight children, including: Mary, Francis, Tom, Emma, Mike, Jean, and Albert. As a young girl, Ann was always busy caring for her younger siblings, looking after the house, helping her parents and cooking for the threshing crews. She gained her extraordinary cooking skills at a very young age. Ann met Peter Stefanyk in Rycroft, and they were married on June 8, 1937 and settled in Bonanza, Alberta. They became the proud parents of five children: Edward, Lawrence, James, Marilyn, and Philip. Ann loved being a mother so much, she always said in her next life she would have even more children. Peter passed away in January of 1993 at the age of 83 years. For the next thirteen years, Ann continued to live independently on the farm with a lot of help from her son Jimmy. She then left the farm and moved into Spruceland Manor in Dawson Creek in 2006. In 2012, she moved into Northview Assisted Living. Although Ann had hardships in her life over the years, nothing compares to when her son Jimmy passed suddenly in September of 2010. A piece of her spirit died that day as she never truly recovered from this. However, it never stopped her from continuing on with life in a positive way. She always said that she would be down and out, but would only allow it for half a day, and then force herself to pull it together. She always set a good example, and loved everyone unconditionally. Over the years on the farm, Ann kept busy tending to her family, garden, yard, flowers, chickens, pigs, and anyone who walked through her door. Ann loved all people regardless of age or stature and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Her grandchildren have fond memories of the times they spent with her during their childhoods. They would beg their parents to go there for a couple days and end up staying for a week or two. At the end of each day, Grandma Ann always found time to sit and write in her diary, she never missed a day. Some of her favorite things were: sunrises, sunsets, and the changing of seasons. Though Grandma Ann underwent various surgeries over the years, she always took pride in being independent and living on her own nearly to the end of her journey. She could still cook and bake better than most, handle her affairs and keep us all updated on what was going on in everyone’s life. She never forgot anything and never missed a beat. Grandma Ann was happiest when she was looking after her family as they were her world. Her immediate family included: Her son Edward (Elsie), her son Lawrence (Dorothy), their children Thomas (Tamara), and Tony, her son James, her daughter Marilyn, grandchildren Allison (Ryan), great grandson Reid, Travis (Jillian), great granddaughters Arianna and Emelia, and her son Philip (Cindy), their children Shelli (Sean), great grandson Wyatt, Neil (Nicole), great grandsons Seth and Finn, Stacey (Trevor) and great granddaughter Taylor. A Celebration of Ann’s Life was held on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 12:00 PM from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Pastor Dave Brisbin officiated. Interment followed in the Hillhaven Cemetery, Bonanza, AB. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Ann to the South Peace Hospice Palliative Care Society, #3, 929-106th Avenue, Dawson Creek, B.C. V1G 2N8 Arrangements were entrusted to Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium.

“A Legacy of Love” is the phrase that best describes the life of Bernice Erickson. Known to all as “Bun”, she always had time for people, whether they were strangers or family and friends. Her capacity for listening with love and without judgement was astounding and her absence leaves a void in the lives of all who knew her. Bun was the fourth of seven children born to Clifford and Bessie Lawrence. She considered her childhood on the family farm in Buffalo Lakes to be wonderful and felt extremely fortunate to have close relationships with all of her siblings throughout her life. She had a lifelong love of reading and as a child would often sneak off to a “quiet place”, forcing her family to search the barn, outhouse and other secluded spots around the farm. Her education at Chatham School and St. Joseph’s High School and Business College led to a job with Northland Utilities in Dawson Creek. While living there, she met and married the love of her life, Carl Edvin Erickson. Carl and Bun settled in Dawson, raising their 3 sons, Cliff, Hugh and Mark, along with their fledgling electrical business from the ground up. With the boys and the business doing well, the couple decided to add the challenge of running a farm and moved to Bessborough in 1962. Bun was busy with gardening, canning and the thousand other jobs to do on a farm, as well as running the office at Erickson’s Electric, but she somehow found the time to welcome her many visitors. Both the Erickson farm and business were hives of activity and anyone dropping by could be sure of a lively chat or sympathetic ear as needed. As her children started families of their own, Bernice wholeheartedly embraced the role of grandmother and later great-grandmother. In her usual fashion, she did not stop at her own family, but welcomed every child into her heart and home. She is still called “Grandma Bun” by many people in their 40’s and younger. When Carl died in 1993, she held her family even closer together and continued running Erickson’s Electric with her sons. Bun semi-retired in 2005, but could be seen around the shop until 2008 keeping the boys in line. In 2013, she moved in with her granddaughter Toni, gifting that household with her grace and love. Bernice died May 30 at Dawson Creek Hospital surrounded by her family. Bun’s capacity for love was infinite and her joy was found in the people around her. She loved her life and would want all of her friends and family to know how much she cared for them and how each person added richness to her existence. We can best honour her life and memory by continuing her legacy of love. Bernice is predeceased by her parents Clifford and Bessie and by her husband Carl.
