Sustainable Fashion By: Niyanta Chirawala
Recently, sustainable fashion is becoming a highly debated topic in media and during seminars. Numerous apparel companies are transforming their business models and improving social conditions for those working in factories. Sustainability literally means the use of all resources in an eco-friendly and judicious manner. The goal is to not harm the environment and for it to be utilized by future generations. Thus, sustainable fashion aims to meet today’s needs while ensuring that the needs of future generations are met too.

Sustainable Fashion
Sustainable fashion includes clothing, shoes, and accessories that are manufactured, marketed, and used in the most environmentally friendly manner possible. It takes into account both environmental and socio-economic aspects. Simultaneously, it is also about benefiting the people who are involved throughout the fashion supply chain – from farmers to consumers to everyone working in facilities like recycling factories. In practice, this implies continuous work to improve all stages of the product’s life cycle. These stages include design, raw material production, manufacturing, transport, storage, marketing, and sale. From an environmental perspective, the aim should be to minimize any undesirable environmental effect of the product’s life cycle by: (a) Ensuring efficient and careful use of natural resources (water, energy, land, soil, animals, plants, biodiversity, ecosystems, etc.) (b) Selecting renewable energy sources like wind or solar at every stage (c) Maximizing the repairing, remaking, reusing, and recycling of the product and its components. From a socio-economic perspective, all stakeholders should work to improve present working conditions for workers in fields such as factories, transportation chains, and stores.

Sustainable Fashion
Stakeholders should display good ethics, best practice, and international codes of conduct. In addition, fashion businesses should encourage more sustainable consumption patterns, caring and washing practices, and an overall new attitude toward fashion. There has been a growing awareness among consumers, especially younger generations, about sustainable fashion. Many forms of sustainable fashion exist. Some actors and individuals emphasize the significance of making clothes in a more environmentally friendly manner, while others advocate secondhand (vintage) or underline the benefits of swapping, renting, or borrowing clothes rather than purchasing newly produced ones. All of these strategies promote a more environmentally, socially, and ethically conscious production and consumption for a more sustainable industry. To tackle the existential threat of climate change, fashion industries need to address its unsustainable practices in an urgent manner.
A large number of materials that are commonly used in the fashion industry areresource-intensive. For example, cotton. These materials require an immense amount of water. There are also synthetic materials like polyester that are made from non-renewable resources like oil. Then, there are other materials, like viscose, which on a massive scale are leading to deforestation and are, therefore, affecting the habitats of endangered species and ancient trees. So, it is crucial that we start researching and developing more sustainable materials because it is critical for the future of fashion industries as well as our planet. The truth is, we cannot keep on relying on resources the same way we are in the past. The rate of formation and replenishment is much slower than the rate of consumption or in other words, the rate at which we use them.

Sustainable Fashion
Additionally, the fashion industry is one of the most polluting sectors of all economies. The amount of waste it generates is enormous and is increasing day by day. The large number of clothes made, sold, and worn is increasing due to better standards of living nowadays. The waste is either burnt or sent to landfills which is not a sustainable way of doing business. First, it harms our ecosystem to a great extent. Secondly, some of these clothes are essential to humans and even for some pets too. Thus, we cannot reduce clothing production but fashion industries can opt for sustainable ways of garment generation. Almost 3000 liters of water are required to make a single cotton t-shirt. Therefore, water waste and conservation have also become an urgent issue. Fortunately, there are new innovative ways to dye clothes without having to use water which is extremely fascinating. We can conclude that sustainable fashion is a movement and process of fostering change in fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. This movement concerns more than just addressing fashion textiles or products. It comprises the need for addressing the whole system of fashion. It deals with interdependent social, cultural, ecological, and financial systems. Simultaneously, it deals with the roles of many stakeholders - producers, living species, contemporary and future dwellers on earth. Sustainable fashion, therefore, is the responsibility of citizens, the public sector, and the private sector. We need to think strategically and transition into using product-level initiatives, such as replacing a type of fiber for a less environmentally harmful option to maintain the habitability of our environment.

My Sustainable Fashion Experience: My friends and I created a piece of furniture using ropes along with other materials. The furniture has two features: 1. Storage- Inside, there are many divisions. The user can store objects like accessories, books, and stationeries. 2. Comfortability- People can sit comfortably because we placed a sari on top of the upper wooden plank of the furniture.
