Citizens! Welcome to the glorious time of year when summer sends us a postcard saying it’ll be back soon from holiday and it’s bringing gifts. Time sure move fast these days. April has arrived like a spring loaded life bomb and it’s decision time, people. We can either attempt to dismantle the damn thing or jump up on down on it until we’re catapulted into the future on a miniature mushroom cloud of music. Come on, let’s be brave... Even despite the recession (that is definitely still happening, don’t let anyone claim otherwise) Cardiff is buzzing with new people, new sounds and a palpable sense of purpose. Packed inside this small but perfectly formed paper beast in a host of talent. Musicians that not only demand your attention but have bloody well earned it too. Meet Blaktrix, a man who could befuddle Satan with mere words. Jump on The Method’s careening groove train, next stop, crazy town! We introduce ambitious, electro pop maestros Dirty Goods and if that wasn’t enough we’ve been chatting to local-boys-done-good Funeral For A Friend. As the seasons change so do we. The cycle of life spins ever onwards. As some guy once said in a movie whose name escapes us, ‘Death smiles at us all, the only thing you can do is smile back.’ We are alive. This is our time. Love and hugs The MMP xxx

Music News DAVID & GOLIATH WALK INTO A BAR .. Here in South Wales, fans of quality ale are well served. Riding high in the imaginary Cardiff beer charts is the Artisan Brewery and their sumptuous Bare Naked Beer. A steadily growing local reputation has been enhanced by a series of cracking mini beer festivals featuring many of Cardiff’s underground musical treasures. Now the man responsible for such merry times, ale maestro Simon Doherty, has incurred the wrath of Pepsi, who claim his logo and the use of the word ‘Naked’ threatens to dilute their own brand, Naked Juice. A legal battle is now due to take place. Despite appearing one-sided, Mr Doherty seems unfazed. When asked how he felt about going to toe-to-toe with a company that could buy the moon he said, ‘It’s nonsense. I’m defending my rights’. That’s the spirit! artisanbeer.co.uk

INDEPENDENCE DACOFFEE A G G

The independent bands of the world are much like the independent businesses out there too. Both requiring a broader collective focus to punch at the same weight as the mainstream. And this point has now been recognised by West Wales’ Paper Aeroplanes who in a move of solidarity with the independent coffee shop have produced a 4-track CD, Safe Hands, with a list of their 12 favourite magic bean stores from across the UK written on the back. The stores in question, including Cardiff’s Thé Pot and The Plan, will give away the CD with food purchases and the band in turn promotes the local stores often making the best coffee. Just the spirit of collaboration required by small indies to survive in these nut-tough times, and the MMP openly applauds it. Uber-bravo, sirs! www.myspace.com/paperaeroplanes

Under the driftwood tree

JOIN FOLK'S FINEST Hearty congratulations to Under The Driftwood Tree, who not only enjoyed a marvelously successful Irish tour, but also capped their triumphant run of shows by taking home a spangley award! Cardiff’s favourite enterprising surf-folksters capitalized during the InterVarsity Folk Dance Festival, launched by the revered and freshly revived Bristol Folk Festival. The band will perform at the latter, wiping thighs with the likes of Bellowhead, Seth Lakeman, Jamie Smith’s Mabon and Show of Hands. Armed with eclectic, skillfully conceived tunes and emitting the friendliest vibes since Ted Danson pulled a pitcher, we’re sure they’ll do phenomenally.

This month the Old Library on The Hayes will be transformed into a huge, four month long exhibition of Cardiff’s creative strength. Big Little City is being orchestrated by local super photographer Dan Green and promises to be a truly memorable artistic showcase for the entire city. Hoards of creative individuals have been encouraged to submit art in a myriad of different forms. A mixture of photography, film, writing, music, performances, animation, illustration, painting and graffiti will fill the entire first floor of the grand old building from the 14th. Helping to soundtrack it all are Spillers Records. The very definition of a beloved local institution, this humble record shop has become a magical hub for musicians, a source of rare and exquisite sound and host to a string of legendary in-store performances over the years. The perfect folk then to organise live gigs Saturday afternoon for 13 entire weeks! It all sounds unfeasibly good to us... www.biglittlecity.com 04 The MMP April 2011

Warmest of congratulations to Neil Cocker, who was recently voted onto the Welsh Music Foundation’s Board of Directors. Neil has been instrumental in the upkeep and maintenance of numerous music-based community projects in Cardiff, including Community Music Wales and Ignite Cardiff. Additionally, he is the founder of the Network of Cultural and Creative Industries, was one half of DJing duo, Phantom Beats and is a respected creative industries consultant. Essentially, if Mother Teresa was working for the Welsh music scene, I think she’d change her name to Neil. We wish Mr Cocker great success with his new position and quest to improve opportunities in Welsh music. neilcocker.com

FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND It’s fair to say that times have been tough for Funeral For A Friend in recent years. Since the release of 2007’s Tales Don’t Tell Themselves, the Bridgend quintet have never managed to recoup the successes they achieved at the turn of the century, when they were being hailed as leaders of a scene that they heavily influenced. When greatest hits album, Your History Is Mine hit the shelves in 2009, many feared that it was a farewell to a short, yet significant career. It is with genuine pleasure then that we can announce that Funeral For A Friend are far from dead. With a UK headline tour in full swing and last month’s release of their highly regarded sixth full-length, Welcome Home Armageddon, this is a band entering their second decade with the feeling that it’s a new beginning. We probed Funeral For A Friend to see what sparked a huge return to form. Interviewed By: Max Barrat

06 The MMP April 2011

WHAT WERE THE MAIN INSPIRATIONS AND MOTIVATIONS FOR WELCOME HOME ARMAGEDDON? Just like all our previous records we wanted to make the best album that we could. The difference this time is that we had two new members coming into the fold, and they spoke to us as fans of the band and really made us realise what our strengths are and reminded us how much we were missing the dynamic energy of albums gone by. This record was all about recapturing the initial spark of just being in a band, and it was easy to do that when there was so much excitement and enthusiasm in the camp.

HOW HAVE THE LINE UP CHANGES MADE YOU A STRONGER UNIT? We’re definitely a lot more motivated now. Being in the same band with the same people for so many years means sometimes you take things for granted and forget what other peoples musical strengths are, and even your own. Gav and Rich definitely reminded us what we’re good at, and that’s really made writing a lot easier and quicker. Both guys are great songwriters too so that’s really injected a fresh burst of creativity into the band, and pushed us all to do things we’ve never done before with our music.

YOUR HEADLINE TOUR STARTS ON MARCH 16TH IN ABERYSTWYTH, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOU TO START YOUR TOUR IN WALES? It’s definitely nice to start off a tour in our home country. We’ve played Aberystwyth a couple of times and always had a great reception there. We’d have liked to have played a couple more Welsh dates, but after playing Cardiff twice last year, and also Swansea, we didn’t want to overdo it. We certainly plan to be back before the end of the year.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE RECEPTION OF YOUR NEW MATERIAL? We’ve already been blown away with the reception to the record thus far. We’ve pretty much received the best critical praise for this record that we’ve possibly ever had, and most

importantly-the fans really seem to be enjoying it, and that’s the main thing. The great thing too, has been the reaction to the songs in the live environment, where people have really embraced them.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE ON TOUR WITH FFAF? HOW MESSY CAN IT GET? I’m quite a messy person on tour. I always bring way too many clothes with me and they’re usually found all over the place. I’m a bit of a tech geek as well so there are always cables, hard drives and games consoles all over the place. Things can get a bit messy after shows though if we’ve got a day off the next day. I don’t drink, so I get to just sit back and watch the madness unfold.

DO YOU THINK WELCOME HOME ARMAGEDDON IS ANGLED TOWARDS RECRUITING NEW LISTENERS OR TO SOLIDIFY AND SATISFY YOUR CURRENT FAN BASE? It’s all about showing all the best sides of Funeral for a Friend, first and foremost. We know we’ve made a great album, and that for us is mission accomplished. I think our old fans will really enjoy hearing the aggression and technicality back in our sound, but at the same time I definitely think, and hope that it will grab some new fans that maybe had a preconceived notion of the type of band that we are.

THE ALBUM FEELS LIKE A BIG ‘TWO-FINGERS’ TO YOUR CRITICS, WAS THAT YOUR INTENTION FROM THE BEGINNING? I guess in a way, it was more of a two fingers to ourselves! I think we’d let things get a bit stale and we’d become a bit complacent and lazy. This is really us back on top of our game and we really wanted to show people that we’re still alive and well. If critics have had a go at us over the last few years, then it was possibly justified - but I don’t think anyone can do that now.

THE MATERIAL ON WELCOME HOME ARMAGEDDON IS CLEARLY SOME OF YOUR BEST TO DATE. WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT IS?

Just because we’ve realised our strengths, and how to play to those strengths; in the past we’ve always tried to “find” ourselves or to try different avenues. This one was case of saying “this is what we’re good at - let’s do it”.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANY FFAF FANS THAT HAVE BEEN LOYAL FROM THE START? Thank you - quite simply. It sounds like a cliché - but we literally wouldn’t be able to do this without them. While we’re doing the clichés, here’s another … the best is yet to come!

THERE’S A LOT OF OPTIMISM IN WELSH MUSIC AT THE MOMENT. IN YOUR EYES, WOULD YOU SAY IT’S A LIVELY SCENE? AND ANY FAVOURITE WELSH BANDS? The scene is incredible at the moment. Of the up and coming bands at the moment Id’ recommend checking out Tiger Please, Cuba Cuba, Cafe Zurich, Lion and the Wolf and Chase The Sunset.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF YOUNG BANDS THAT CITE YOU AS AN INFLUENCE. WHO ARE YOUR MAJOR INFLUENCES? Too many to list - but personally Queen were always my biggest influence as they were able to write in so many different styles without losing their identity. We were also definitely very influenced by touring with Iron Maiden and seeing how professionally they operate as a band, by what an incredible show they put on, and their continued hunger and passion after all these years of being a band.

WOULD YOU SAY WELCOME HOME ARMAGEDDON MARKS A NEW CHAPTER FOR FFAF AND IN WHAT WAY? Definitely. New line up, new outlook, new belief, new faith in ourselves. It’s an exciting time for the band.

YOU’RE MOVING INTO YOUR SECOND DECADE, WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS? To write the best record of our lives - over and over again. www.myspace.com/funeralforafriend

DIRTY GOODS

Words: Rowan Liggett | Photo: Paul Roberts

So you want to take over world, who doesn’t these days? But what do you need to achieve this? Well, in our decadent, Western neck of the woods a great start is a crazy hair cut. That and maybe... no, a haircut will do. Just ask Jennifer Aniston’s agent. If you possess mad hair and have some talent then you may as well quit your job because you my friend, are ready for the big time. Just ask Dirty Goods, they know the score. It’s a fine line between making edgy music that’s accessible for the masses and music that only the masses could love. After all, for every Iggy Pop there’s a Daniel O’Donnell. Hailing from Newport this three-piece, pop/rock outfit are blessed with their own identity whilst sounding similar enough to bona fide hit monsters to stand every chance of being very popular indeed. They’re also ambitious little bastards. With respect to our brothers and sisters in Newport this reviewer has wondered in the past whether any of its residents have ever managed 08 The MMP April 2011

to leave the place. Dirty Goods have smashed that myth by playing as far afield as Paris, New York and Los Angeles. Further respect is due. A collection of their songs, including some revealing acoustic performances, have accumulated no less than 400,000 views on YouTube. BBC airplay, courtesy of the ever vigilant Adam Walton amongst others, has also been secured. Hell, their music has even featured on Hollyoaks and Eastenders E20. That’s a fine effort for a band that’s been together less than two years. Formed from the embers of Jump The Underground, the fresh faced Dirty Goods signed a record and publishing deal with London based Necessary Records in July 2010. The blueprints of this electro fused beasty were designed to make people move their feet and the plan is unfolding beautifully. Citing influences such as Chromeo, Daft Punk and Phoenix coupled with a radio friendly sheen in the realm of Kings of Leon and Razorlight they’re on

the verge of exploding.

Y

The passion is visible at their live shows but in the studio their collective imagination shines through. They’re currently hard at work in Newport’s 48v Studios with Elliot Gibbins producing as well as Manchester’s Oxygene Studios with Christophe Bride. An all singing, all dancing release is imminent.

The Method Very rarely does a city deliver an outfit with such innate calibre as The Method. Their incendiary live shows boast the frenzied energy levels of a rabid walrus in Legoland. They have accumulated a torrent of devoted fans over the years, as well as spirited support from the likes of Shindig! magazine, Lauren Laverne, Adam Walton - the list goes on. With their debut album, Dissidents & Dancers due for release on See Monkey Do Monkey Records, the MMP eagerly traces the talents and triumphs of this electrifying quintet. Words: Sion Trefor Photo: Paul Roberts

010 The MMP April 2011

In terms of sound, the band delivers on so many fronts. Blustery reverb meets razor-edged guitar jabs; clattering junkyard drum chops line low-bit synth cadenzas. Jarring, growling brass fiercely dances with a racket of wailing backing vocals, while frontman Richie Hayes captains with the flair, wit and swagger of a dogged thrill-instiller. Tracks like Consider This Your Warning, The Fool and The Gatekeeper & I demonstrate a marvellous blend of incisive, informed social commentary with the inexorable Sonics-esque bullet train of noise. Recent single, We Don’t Know, sounds like The Standells filtered through seven heavens of fuzz, while Feed a Line is fed with bubbles of dubby swells and swoops, a la Mikey Dread or King Tubby. In fact, listening to Dissidents & Dancers feels like the most enjoyable popular music history seminar you’ll ever have. They’ve made an art of spanning many genres without getting stranded. The album is a veritable melting pot of garage, ska, dub, punk, soul, reggae, trip/hip-hop and more. This is fusion of influence in the truest, most universal, least-crap sense. Not jazz-marimba adaptations of Mozart concertos, or ‘Afrika Bambaataa in Northampton’ or ‘The Axl Rose Bugle

Anthology’ – it’s merging the progressive, retrospective and ultimately reproductive in equal measure. On one hand, tastefully blending influences, on the other, distilling that sound through forward-looking aesthetics and production. There’s a difference between being derivative and knowing your music. The Method, surer than Captain Ahab, are the latter. Onstage, the band is practically unrivalled in these parts. Rarely have five gents seemed more distinct, but at the same time, as solid as diamond baguettes when performing. Religiously, every show is infused with energy and presence that can only be obtained after years of grafting and honing craft. The MMP is as sure as chocolate that it’s all going to pay off very, very soon. www.themethod.eu Catch them live at their album launch party: Saturday 16th April, The Globe, Cardiff

BLAKTRIX It’s becoming increasingly clear that Cardiff doesn’t have to worry about the wellbeing of its hip-hop. Obviously, this relatively recent surge of quality output is down to the skillful cultivation of diverse talents and musicality over the years. But few epitomise the culmination of these labours better than Blaktrix. Blending blinding flow with a brilliant ear for production, expert delivery with deeply entrenched musicianship and craft - things are set to soar with his release, Some People Never Go Crazy. So it’s with great pride we present an interview with the man himself for this month’s issue. Enjoy! 012 The MMP April 2011

HOW IN THE CLAM OF CHOWDER ARE YOU?

Aching! Just played footy on Merthyr Tydfil’s football ground and I’m bloodied and bruised. But I scored one and won a penalty so I’m buzzing!

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO TALENTED MCs WANTING TO GET TO CAPTIAL CITY QUICKER THAN TRAINS TRAVEL? I’m not someone who says ‘music is my life - that’s all there is and I’ll kiss anus and die for it’. If I were this person I’d be in London now and believe I’d be a much bigger artist for it. I do seek more exposure, but there are other reasons to remain here. In terms of the music I make, I think the only people who’d benefit from staying in this city are those who wouldn’t rise above the dross that saturates the London market. But I would. Anyone from anywhere can make good music but getting your name known in London is where it’s at for Brits.

IS IT DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN ARTISTIC CONVICTIONS WHEN THE TIDE SWAYS THE OTHER WAY? I enjoy being stubborn and different. The hard thing was to continue to create music, because money was always a factor. But I’ll always make music, encouraging artists, filmmakers and musicians who have something special to come and work with me. Normally, I will find aspects to work with and see hidden gems blossom.

WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO SACRIFICE TO DO AS WELL AS YOU’RE DOING?

It got to the stage where I had to tell myself ‘put your money where your mouth is’ cos no one else will. Hard, because I had no money. But sometimes you have to back it up and start respecting yourself, treating your music like a business. If you make good music and have spent half your life learning an art you have the right to earn from it. I became very determined and it was liberating.

FROM COINING YOUR FIRST VERSE AT THE TENDER AGE OF SEVEN TO ADAM WALTON’S BEST OF 2010 – WHAT WILL 2011 BRING? The mini LP ‘Some People Never Go Crazy’ is out this year. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it. No Drama (feat. Ralph Rip Shit) is out now. The video’s on youtube and it’s available on iTunes. ‘Sour Grapes’, the second single, is out soon and totally different to what people have heard from me before. I’ve hooked up with Rider Shafique and some cross-Atlantic high-echelon producers for the next project, then it’s full steam ahead with beats that will blow your brain. Stay tuned…. Live Reviews

The Wreck’n’roll Circus

Hail! The Planes/Jon Roberts

The Coal Exchange is an underused beauty of a venue perfect for the touring bands that so often skip Cardiff on their travels. As I arrived on my MMP mission I was greeted by revellers in stylishly ghoulish attire. Stilt-walkers made the most of the cavernous arena and everywhere you looked bizarre party goers were revving themselves up for a long night of extreme consumption. Truth be told a few more people would have helped but still the excitement grew. Not surprising as onstage was a dazzling display of vocal dexterity and cultured blues guitar. It sounded like a steam train singing about the good old days. The owner of the voice was Skip ‘Little Axe’ McDonald and for a few moments he was the blues.

The acoustic gig can often be troublesome. A band can be great live, but take them out of their comfort zone, make them stand in front of a largely apathetic crowd and it can be rather awkward. Neither does it help that they usually take place in bars/cafes: Ffresh has a nice high end atmosphere, but if acoustic shows are something they’d like to do seriously a slightly more sophisticated sound system would be advisable – a small mixing desk and two speakers doth not a good sound make. The lyrics and presong chat of both performers were largely lost this evening.

Coal Exchange | 12th March

The organisers had cleverly positioned two stages either end of the venue, which alternated throughout the evening. It was fun to watch as the crowd see-sawed from one end of the room to the other like deckchairs on a doomed ocean liner. A packed line up largely delivered. Saucy ladies jiggled for us. DJs span records like their lives depended on it. MMP faves Cakehole Presley whipped up the crowd and local ska merchants Funhouse upped the dance ante with true skill. Occasionally a man driving a piano flew by. Festival season had begun and it’s started indoors. As the end of the evening grew near Johnny Cage and the Voodoo Groove kicked a barrel of their special mojo juice all over floor and we slipped and slided like drunken mules on ice. The rest is a happy, drunken blur. Excellent fun. Photo by: Julia Ridlington www.scraprecords.com

Ffresh, WMC | 4th March

I arrived to catch the final three and a half songs of Jon Roberts’ set. It was standard generic singer-songwriter fare – all heavy-handed tripletime guitar-strumming, with vocal conviction to match. Hail! The Planes were a far more interesting proposition. They suffered from acoustic gig discomfort to begin with, but after a couple of songs they really hit their stride. Guitarist David and violinist Holly’s voices worked well together, whether in close harmony or counterpoint, while Rob shuffled along on his snare drum. The crowd were politely captivated on the whole by the band’s irregular phrasing and melodic sensibility, although their sound would have benefitted greatly from the presence of some bass guitar. Nonetheless the quality of their songs was more than evident, and the set worked well as an introduction to the band. JOC hailtheplanes.com

Releases Kitty Cowell Come Roll With Me

When NME coined the term ‘Nu-Rave’ to describe angular guitar pop with synths, they should have used it to describe the sort of genre-mashing androgyny evident on Kitty Cowell’s ‘Come roll with me’. Imagine Mstrkraft dressing Chicago house for the noughties – you have ‘Get rowdy’, where as ‘Emergency’ is a postdisco apocalypse punctuated with Kitty’s Ke$ha-esque vocal style. Kitty’s production is slick throughout, with four classy re-mixes ready for dance-floor mayhem concluding this E.P. It is often easy to criticise lack of ambition within emerging artists but Kitty Cowell’s musical ambiguity is dauntless and largely successful, an exception being the rather disjointed chorus to ‘Take it back’ which fails a kick-ass vocal – coincidently rectified on Ollypop’s massive re-mix. With greater attention to lyrical substance Kitty Cowell could be unstoppable, but in the meantime Come Roll With Me is an ambitious day-glo manifesto. MP myspace.com/kittycowell

Gruff Rhys Hotel Shampoo

Commencing with lead single Shark Ridden Waters, one of two Andy Votel collaborations, Hotel Shampoo has one of the finest, effortlessly chic tracks Rhys has ever put on record. Thankfully, though, the LP exists in rude health beyond this. Sensations In The Dark has a joyous vocal melody, tropical instrumentation and creative piano riffology. The stomping Christopher Columbus chucks in more fine sampling, elements of psychedelic electro and an imaginative lyrical content. And duet with El Perro Del Mar, Space Dust #2, offers a quirky psych-lounge-pop angle to the affair. That said, there are times when, in spite of the romantic lyrical content, it feels fairly oblique and auto-piloted - Take A Sentence and At The Heart Of Love being examples. Of course, Rhys being Rhys, these lowpoints remain remarkably high and, in a way, it’s quite an achievement after an oddity-embracing career of 20 years we still expect creative miracles. SMR myspace.com/theidolrich

Electric Furnace Sound And Fury

Whoever claimed that rock and metal were dead need to be firmly slapped around the face with the debut EP from South Wales’ Electric Furnace. Sound And Fury may only comprise of four tracks, but they are four headbanging tracks that bulge with riff-tacular fret-work from the second Goodnight Bloodsuckers kicks in. There’s even a finger bleeding solo in each song for all the air guitar fans out there, saving the best until last on Mother’s Ruin. Electric Furnace stamp a modern edge on their classic metal and heavy rock sound, with influences such as Metallica, Anthrax and Judas Priest evident in the foreground. The quality of the production makes it hard to believe they are only a three-piece, as prominent bass lines give the mix a greater texture. Sound And Fury is a pedal to the metal assault that oozes with star quality and great potential. MB myspace.com/electricfurnace

Mudmowth & Metabeats Sledgehammer Kisses

The latest gem from the Associated Minds trove, Sledgehammer Kisses delivers every ounce of promise possible. In typical form, Metabeats displays insane flair for production, mediating smooth, golden age sonorities and harsh bits, glitches and clicks. Imagine the gloss of J Dilla and the skewered grit (and jazz appreciation) of RZA or Madlib and you’ve come close. In equal measure, Mudmowth sustains monumental flow like the Orinoco in rainy season, delivering floods of wit, aggression and poignancy throughout. As is always the case with quality hip-hop, the tunes teem with undeniably adept musicianship. A distinguished finesse in arrangement and orchestration blooms throughout the album, with notable examples including Life’s Never Enough and Concrete Buttercup. Yet the mix remains unstifled, owing to devil-in-the-detail production and consummate, well-judged delivery. With shining contributions from Sonnyjim, Skamma and The Method’s Richie Hayes, Sledgehammer Kisses will satisfy anyone with a hunger for excellent hip-hop. ST www.myspace.com/mudmowth

Innercity Pirates Cutting Noses, Chasing Tales A pirate’s favourite music is usually Arrgh & B. Innercity Pirates are not ordinary pirates. Purveyors of post-punk urban rock with a grungy twist, the fabulous foursome kick off proceedings with ‘Seen It All Before’. The lyrics proclaim ‘heard it all before’ and we muse ‘yeah Vampire Weekend’, but they soon settle down with impressive driving guitar and by the time we are four tracks in we arrive at the anthemic Bang Bang. Ear Sex and Love’s Over also strike home. Innercity Pirates have a unique groove but whether their brand of classic four boy rock catches the zeitgeist remains to be seen. Are they head and shoulders above the rest? Keep pogoing, lads. BB myspace.com/innercitypirates

Adam Williams Nashville Handshake EP The precedent for punkrock lead singers trying their hand at singersongwriting was set most famously by Elliott Smith who left Heatmiser to become one of the most famous and tragic of his generation. Unfortunately, Adam Williams’ departure from local boys John Q Public has not heralded quite the same effortless transition. This isn’t to say that the Nashville Handshake EP is without merit, though. See You Next Year’s jangly guitar intro is reminiscent of The Faces and the lyrical content demonstrates an innate and beneficial sense of humour, a feat repeated on The Ballad Of Henry Chinaski. In addition, Thinking Of You’s downbeat delivery and reverb vocals are genuinely affecting. But the fundamental issue is melodic conventionality meaning that Until The Morning Comes, in spite of some lovely harmonies, is almost entirely predictable. As indeed are all four tracks once started. Still, it’s early days and Williams has plenty of time to develop his art. SMR soundcloud.com/adwilliams/sets/ nashville-handshake

Paper Aeroplanes We Are Paper Ghosts

With the likes of Laura Marling getting deserved attention at the Brits, it is a good time for purveyors of folksy, acoustic music. Paper Aeroplanes is Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn, and it has to be said that Ms Howells has the voice of an angel. Her beautiful tones are well suited to this collection of seven songs which, by and large, deal with the dreamy side of love. They confess to ‘taking those words that you hear in your head and shooting them across the ether’ and this philosophy is well to the fore in standout songs such as the title track and ‘Days We Made’. Confident and assured throughout and certainly the best thing to come out of Milford Haven since the A40, it can only be hoped that when reality bites, Paper Aeroplanes will be able to handle the grittier themes of life. Until then let’s be happy to bliss out in their optimism. BB paperaeroplanesmusic.com

The Method Dissidents & Dancers

Very few would dispute The Method’s reputation as one of the finest live outfits on the circuit, but recreating this fierce electricity on record was always going to be a substantial undertaking. However, armed with more confidence than Moses, we can report that they have succeeded beyond expectation. As opposed to leaping from one sonic derivation to the next, the most striking attribute would be the band’s impenetrably solid amalgamation of influence. Though there aren’t enough pages to list them all, imagine a mix of The Sonics, Earl Van Dyke, Symarip, The Loved Ones, Mikey Dread and The Zodiacs. Filtered through some highly skilful production, that noisy blend of sounds blares throughout the album like a reverberant aural splatter. Standout tracks would include the recent single, We Don’t Know and the raucous garage-mariachi bliss of The Fool. Very accomplished work by an outfit clearly moving from strength to strength. ST myspace.com/methodofficial

Steff Adams Blue Pathways

Steff Adams joins the queue of singer-songwriters looking to stand out and, in fairness, has a resounding crack of the whip at it. As an opening gambit, Should Have Stayed Home, is markedly impressive comprising Elliott Smithesque layered vocals alongside Badly Drawn Boy’s kitchen-sink approach with strings, touches of piano and more added in. This and the collection of evidence that follows, shows Adams has firm control of his craft. Gonna Have To Last sounds like a lost quirky Beatles number from the Abbey Road sessions, while Lennon’s ghost is again evoked in the beautiful Too Long Losing. You And I is less successful, reminiscent of a John Shuttleworth outtake with its programmed keyboards, but it’s a briefly misplaced step which is then followed by the excellently subdued Into Orbit and the extraordinary Summer. Blue Pathways as an LP may have mostly set its phasers to low-key, but it has a stoic charm that is awfully difficult to resist. SMR myspace.com/steffadams

Singles HOUDINI DAX Robin You Lie / Whatever You Feel

KYSHERA Know Your Enemy

THE UNDIVIDED You & Me

Like a Post-apocalyptic version of the Beach Boys, Houdini Dax stomp and harmonise their way through the opening track of this double A-sider - ‘Robin You Lie’. Would-be Welsh Surfers are not as clean-cut as their West Coast counterparts and there is more grunge than glam in this riotous opener. The second track ‘Whatever You Feel’ has more of a campfire song glow to it. A breezy Love is.. Number which contrasts well to the opening tubthumper. Houdini Dax are a confident outfit. Guaranteed to get your feet tapping, their feelgood vibe is infectious. Time to wax the board and look forward to seeing them live. Weird surfs up. BB www.myspace.com/houdinidax

South Wales’ finest purveyors of politically driven, heavy schizo-rock, highlight horrendous global injustices in their new free single, Know Your Enemy. With this title, it was always going to be difficult to shed de la Rocha’s ‘fight the war, fuck the norm’ edict, but Kyshera have chosen to reinforce, not reshade RATM’s sentiments. For that reason, the track holds up. Singer James Kennedy’s lyrics are simple but effective: ‘big banks, big business, big governments – we judge you as guilty…’ Accompanied by chunky riffs and thickset groove, there’s much to admire in this single, looking forward to the next release. ST kyshera.com

If being described as ‘Biffy Clyro’s wide eyed, sledgehammer-hook wielding younger siblings’, is as good a compliment as you can get, then The Undivided appears to be on to a good thing. You & Me kicks off with drum beats that will shake your core and quickly moves into soaring guitar riffs and melodies reminiscent of their influences; Placebo, People In Planes and Muse. You & Me is an all out alt-rock stomper and with intelligent lyrics backing up the sweet hooks and vocals, The Undivided have produced a simmering winner which will keep them permanently on your radar. BJ myspace.com/theundividedmusic

Demos THE GINGER ROGERS This is a sterling demo from Cardiff’s freshest six-piece funk-soul outfit. This CD consists of four diverse, well-judged, well-executed tunes. Spanning the lovely clave-orientated Breathe to George Clinton-esque So Sings My Soul, from the soulful Rhodes-led Within Without You to rare groove stylings of Done Waiting. This band links and grooves superbly, tighter than cast iron daisy chains, with aspirations angled towards the likes of Curtis Mayfield, The Notations, P-Funk Allstars and Susan Tedeschi. The Ginger Rogers have made a pendulum of my head, desperate to hear more. Be sure to catch them at their monthly residency in The Gate. ST www.myspace.com/bombalaska

M.FALL We like a bit of mystery at MMP towers. This demo, humbly titled in pen and minus any contact details, appeared in the office out of thin air. Subsequent listens didn’t yield any clues as to its owner but did prove a nice way to spend some time. Simple but effective in it’s heartfelt delivery; the four tracks are full of understated beauty. Track 2 in particular brims with genuine melancholy. There’s also unexpected synthesizers weaving pretty melodies despite a fairly horrifying tone. We suspect this may be deliberate though and celebrate the ill-advised use of eighties electric keyboards. Interesting stuff and well worth a listen. If only we knew who they were… RJL

BOMB ALASKA Bomb Alaska are a four piece Rock’n’Roll band with a charmingly off-balance sense of humour. The energetic track, Zombie Baby, is that rarest of things - an upbeat tale about a dead loved one. Nice lads. Front man Johnny Vedmore shouts, screams and barks over a variety of punk/rockabilly numbers designed for late night drinking holes. Take You There sounds like The Tennessee 3 fronted by Iggy Pop. It’s solid, fast-paced and crashes through several genres with its heavy vocals and busy lead guitar. It verges on parody at times but there’s much to enjoy for fans of basic, no nonsense Post Punk/ Alt/Rock/Funk/Folk fun. RJL www.myspace.com/bombalaska

STEWART ALEXANDER The ocean of online music is home to more weirdness than a coked-up Scientology convention. At least amidst the digital oddness you’ll find some genuine food for thought. Although Mr Alexander may not possess much in the way of traditional musical talent, he hides it well behind a lovingly constructed screen of lo-fi production and gritty determination. The music on offer here is strangely evocative of the death of civilisation. Which is nice. The use of samples is to be applauded too. Lipstick & Endings is awash with unhinged, dream-like guitar and shrapnel-like quotes, possibly stolen from an emergency broadcast during a zombie outbreak. Weird... But good. RJL stewartalexander.net

FENNEL SEEDS Once again, Fennel Seeds confirm that there has to be something rather special in the water streaming down Mount Snowdon. Based a stone’s throw away from one of Britain’s busiest mountains; here’s a glimpse of great things to come from a band already championed by the likes of Tom Robinson and Badly Drawn Boy. Tracks like I’m A Traitor and Crab Kicker betray immense grit and junkyard swagger, like the jagged consolidation of Nirvana and The Strokes. Add to this a palpable aptitude for musical texture and lyrical subtext and it’s clear Fennel Seeds could be something very special. ST myspace.com/fennelseeds

TOM LEWIS It’s well-established fact that Tom Lewis has the kind of voice that could soften the infernal offspring of Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blackburn. So, with great pleasure we receive Man To Do, recorded by those fine few at Still Small Voice Records. The track is as pleasant as it is well-produced, boasting tasteful orchestration and harmonic depth on every turn. Combining the wonderful lyrical phrasing of Ray Lamontagne with the accessible harmonic planes of Damien Rice. The MMP looks forward to Lewis’ debut release, hoping for more challenging pieces to complement the lovely sweetness of this one. ST myspace.com/tomoslewis

Kaptin’s Column

The sun has reached us early. This is an open appeal to the powers that be to please let him stay out to play for the next few months, we promise to make it worth his while. Already the music is taking a turn for the sunny, both House and Garage are back in force and we are already starting to hear possible summer anthem producers staking an early claim. One possible lot are of course our very own C.R.S.T whose EP on Herve’s ODeep Thrills label is finally to see the light of day. Saw Skream tweet about it the other day saying it was ‘f**king amazing’, which is definitely a good look.

In other news the Signature nights in Buffalo have now gone weekly and April has some absolutely stellar bookings with Altered Natives (14th), Fantastic Mr Fox (21st) and Pariah (28th), all really strong acts. Elsewhere, Undertone have a House night called Delete who seem to be bringing some excellent DJs (Move D, Will Saul), still not managed to make it down but heard good things, not sure who they have for April but no doubt they’ll be worth checking out, maybe see you down there. To celebrate the spring, over at Cardiff Arts Institute we shall be launching the Avant-Garden on Easter Weekend for a month of parties every weekend in the (soon to be) heavily pimped out new Garden, kicking off with a Rhythm Talk party on Thursday 21st April featuring Jam City, undoubtedly one of the most exciting of the new wave House producers. Other exciting leftfield bass acts for the month include post-Grime Godfather and Hyperdub family member, Terror Danjah (8th April) who plays alongside Monky, a man for whom we’ve (rightly) given much praise recently, whilst two heavyweights Baobinga and Raffertie (Build +Super) go head to head on April 1st repping their respective labels. bigLOVE, Kaptin Every Monday 9pm – 10pm on Radio Cardiff 98.7fm Twitter @kaptinisdead Photo by: Paul Roberts

Reaching out to everyone in Platinum City (copyright Ninjah)...

4Dee’s putting on a massive event! “A host of some of The UKs finest MCs/DJs/B-Boys & Girls coming together to raise money for a hip hop Project in Uganda Known as B.P.U. (Breakdance Project Uganda)”. UK 4 Uganda will feature (count ‘em) Rodney P, Ramson Badbonez, Mystro, Iron Braydz, Kamanchi Sly (Hijack), K’ners, Joker Starr, Turna Phrase, Joe Blow, Skamma & Ral Duke, Lee Scott & Salar, Bill Shakes & King Grubb, Loki, Gasp & Depths, Mr Mackenzie, Clarity & Crucifix, D.Gritty, Astroid Boyz; DJs Soulsbury, Veto, Winchester, X-Kutz, Mushroom and more acts to be confirmed. Obviously the cause speaks for itself and this really is a celebration of talent at the same time. In the face of how people used to complain about being represented, this shows the UK scene really has come of age. Tickets are £10 in advance/£12 on the door, it’s Monday, April 25 starting at 2:30pm at The Globe and it will be large. What else has happened? I’m glad you asked, Associated Minds has now released Mudmowth & Metabeats - Sledgehammer Kisses, it’s out in shops and pretend shops on the internet too and it’s going down very well critically. It’s a new level of beats and rhymes from both with a lot of concentrated additional production from P.L.O. Also check the DJ Jaffa & Mayor - Bumpcast 2 for FREE at mixcloud.com/AM <http:// themmp.tv/features/2010/09/ruffstylz-september/ruff-5/> . ALSO, check for the new Stagga, Skamma & Joe Blow tune The Squidge as they keep expanding their experimentation into whatever the fuck goes on in Stagga’s mind. Joey goes in on this one, it’s illy. I checked out a battle last month called Verbal Remedy, put on by the b-boy n girl crew, hosted by Dregz and Dan Jose (funny guy). Ferny Mac clashed Sega and they chose to do it mostly freestyle, apart from when the judges started making up new rounds for them on the spot and really putting them through it so big up both for going for six rounds, that’s pretty gruelling. Speaking of b-boy’s, watch 2D manage to dance to Perfect Circle’s version of Imagine on youtube, he’s got some Michael Jackson spirit in him, it’s really good. As for ME, look for Homeboy Sandman & Ruffstylz - Rooftop Rhymes on youtube to see me cypher with one of the world’s finest and then wait for the track we’re making, it’s heavy. I’ve also finished two months of rehearsals for my Freestyle Forums theatre show so look out for tour dates to be announced for that on the Freestyle Forums facebook page. Oh yeah, Darkhouse Fam are playing San Francisco in April with Mary Anne Hobbs, Kode 9 and many more. BONG, as Americans say. Safe fam, easy blood, peace cuzzy...

The Shadow Over Outsear. I.....neverknewmygrandfather.... he vanished leaving little trace before I was even born. My father never spoke about him (though he rarely spoke about anything other than donkey racing and boutique mustard recepies), so he’s remained an enigma to me all these years. However, the other day whilstt looking for things to throw at children, I stumbled upon an extract from his journal in the cellar….and from it, I’ve been able to discern something very important about my lost relative…. “Wretched sleep, all of it, foggy and deep and impenetrable, smothered by the weight of tumulus dreams, now nothing more than fading shades, unease seared into the minds eye…the very wrongness of those vision remains, but the what? The where? The why? Tripping backwards away from sight…impossible to catch, even more so to hold onto. Sweat stained face, twitching limbs, heavy breathing, bolt upright in bed…surroundings for a moment unfamiliar, panic stricken. Then, memories rushing in. Travelling now, far 030 The MMP April 2011

from where I was, not yet where I should be….a stop over, yes, a pick me up, to drink, to eat, to sleep then to rocket onwards towards whatever. This town, Outsear, that is it…. Tucked into the mountain, a veil of mist, it’s craggy head arose from nowhere along my path and with much thanks I trundled in, legs aching, mind numb. A blessing, yes? What else, empty streets, crooked cobbles underfoot and blinking lamps flickered like stars too close above. Empty streets, but maybe…not so empty, onwards carting my bedraggled frame, searching for an inn perhaps? A shelter? A bar, an anything that can cast away this most brutal cold for but a moment. Empty streets? No, faces at the windows, looking out and down, I think for a moment I spy something in the shadows near by, it’s eyes a scaly vengeance and from it’s mouth drop shapes this world does not know, old, very, hungry, always. Then gone, head shakes, it’s too much cold, too little food. Empty streets? No, eyes all over, crawling across my skin like spiders, black spiders,

big black spiders, bred for war, bred to burrow under flesh, bred to get into your mind. Then, ahead…a tavern! Oh joy, the eyes are gone, the darkness seems to lift, and the weight I felt, like a wet blanket cast over is light as silk. Inside, expectation, warmth, chatter, reality, neither. Nothing of the sort, bone cold, rotten wood haphazard furniture, a greying creature behind the bar, looking the picture of sickness, deaths cruel joke, some how clinging to this coil, I wander in, not many eyes in this depression turned to space, what few they are wrap now on me, on this stranger. I peer out along them, and in the corner of my gaze a most distressing view, fleeting as it may, the barman, all shades of wrong as had been seen, but wrong for all the wrong reasons, cracking, thick, reptilian skin, eyes deep set and seeping fluid, shapes like snakes stretching down from his jaw, unknown horror waiting behind them. I snap my head towards him, the view returns to what was there before, my weary mind it must be. Nothing more.

A room for the night obtained I dive straight to the bottom of sleep. I want no more of this place, rest and be gone, I care not for here. But C troubled visions plague my night, strange images M flashing through my mind. Y Of people praying to a beast shackled inside CM the very flesh of this land, imprisoned in the MY mountain, colossal, too old to imagine, too cruel CY to believe. Of those who CMY changed over the years, drinking in the strange K toxins this place produces, of thinking together, not man, nor beats, something else, thinking together, waiting, never growing old and waiting for as long as it takes. Chanting a name that fills my night time. What is “Naxus”? and what does it want? I hear now an approach towards my room, a low bubbling, insect clicking and human murmur, perhaps they will tell me, better yet…maybe show” THE VIEWS OF JM STRANGE DO NOT REFLECT THE VIEWS OF THE MMP
