10 N.E.o.N.

If you haven’t already attached the sled to the huskies and started burning the bannisters for additional heating you’ve either fled the country or gone insane. We must save every penny we can. Most of your house is valuable fuel and there are things out there worth saving for. Like lots of exciting new music for little Johnny and little Susie. The MMP has a little something for you all too. Our gift to you at this most festive of times comes via some extraordinary musical elves we found on the streets, kicking their heels and grumbling about cut backs. Upon closer inspection we realised they weren’t real elves but in fact four starkly different but equally amazing musical spirits: this month we talk to all star producer Charlie Francis, interrogate Revoker, shake down the New Exhibition of Noise and try to make sense of CaStLeS. Since launching the new website - one with the kind of gadgetry and power normally associated with the Death Star - MMP writers have been gig-going bonkers. It’s a lovably doomed attempt to, as J.M Strange put it, ‘fill the internet’. We urge you all to log onto www.themmp.tv and check their efforts. Now featuring extensive club listings as well as all the live events for the entire city. You’ll find a lot more than Santa would think appropriate for all you extremely naughty boys and girls. Jingle bells! Merry Christmas everyone!

AWARDS TOUR SWINGS BY CARDIFF The NME Awards tour has, throughout the years, been a stepping stone along the road to iconic status for a lot of bands, with world-conquering acts such as Coldplay, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys all playing on this prestigious set of dates. The tradition of having our fair city play host to a night remains unscathed, as this year Crystal Castles, Magnetic Man, Everything Everything, and the Vaccines will play Cardiff University’s Great Hall on the 13th February. Tickets are already on sale, so make sure you don’t miss out on one of the musical highlights for February. .......................... www.nme.com

End Of Year Lists The Oncoming Storm Now we are in the inner sanctum of the music media, we have become more potently aware of the temptation to do end of year lists. It’s an irresistible urge that literally everyone becomes entranced by, like a moth to a flame. In the first of many to come, Rough Trade announced their Top 100 Albums of the Year and us Cardiffians have much to be proud of. The School’s Loveless Unbeliever clocked in at an impressive No. 69 - trouncing the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Hot Chip, Field Music, Four Tet and Mystery Jets. And Marina & The Diamonds gave us another chance to bathe vicariously in another’s success with Family Jewels landing at No. 89. All very impressive stuff. Let’s hope this momentum is maintained through the oncoming storm of ordered lists about to hit us. www.roughtrade.com Photo By: Alison Wonderland 04 The MMP December 2010

Girls, Glitz & Glamour Ever since the MMP began listing all the club events in Cardiff we’ve become astutely aware that there’s a lot of weirdly alluring things going on. Often taking place in the witching hour and set in glamorous worlds of girls, cocktails and impeccable ironing. For those of you with more than one pair of shoes Club 411 on St Mary’s Street are hosting the Cardiff auditions for mainstream fashion beast, Britain’s Next Top Model. On December 1st a heady mix of neo-soul fused hip-hop, courtesy of DJ D Stylus, will soundtrack the beautiful people as they stride like lions while a thousand tiny suns explode.

Live&Unsigned:Auditions The Live and Unsigned bandwagon gets bigger every year offering one of the rare opportunities for a band’s live sound and performance to gauge their talent as opposed to recorded output or some ethereal x factor related rhetoric. Its auditions this year will take in Cardiff and give all of our fantastic live bands the chance to shine at a national level. The competition will culminate with a final in the O2 Arena next year, but the first important date is 9th January 2011 in The Coal Exchange which marks the local audition. Go forth and conquer, people! www.liveandunsigned.com

GRUFF RHYS UPDATE ... NEW HOTEL SHAMPOO LP ACCOMPANIED BY INSTALLATION One of the reasons we all love Gruff Rhys so much, aside from his unending musical brilliance, is for his utterly leftfield ideas. Not content with a collaboration with an instrument-concocting Brazilian VCR repairman, his forthcoming Hotel Shampoo LP will coincide with an art installation in Chapter built from the materials Rhys has smuggled from hotels over the years of being a Welsh icon. Rhys commented: “I hoarded these objects in a rush of mild kleptomania. Every room in my house began to amass these plastic bottles and various, hotel-related things from every continent on earth (except Antarctica)”. In an apparent act of revenge he is moving it all into the Arts Centre. Fair play. www.gruffrhys.com . www.chapter.org

BACK ON 87.9FM The community-minded folks at Newport City Radio have been compiling a great set of shows supporting the area and cultivating the local scene. So it’s great news they are set to broadcast throughout December both on their constant web platform, and on 87.9FM. Every city needs some platform for local performers to get radio time and it’s good to see our neighbours down the road stepping up to the big leagues. With more support and nurture this 28-day licence will be extended. Let’s all lend an ear and give our brethren a listen. They’ll be on for 28days from 26th November to 23rd December and online all of the time. ............................................ www.newportcityradio.org

BANDS WANTED

Our brothers and sisters in Swansea are helping unemployed musicians with a pioneering approach to live music promotion. Every Thursday night BEAT THE STREET has been welcoming original bands who are struggling for gigs. There’s an open invitation to Cardiff bands as well to get involved and grab a gig at The Club on Woodfield Street. Grander plans, to help youngsters discover their mojo by encouraging them to learn instruments and form new bands in the process, are also in the pipeline. With venues in Port Talbot, Llanelli and Gorseinon all keen on starting similar projects we say, ‘bravo’. Bands wanting to play can contact:

REVOKER Sometimes a band pulls off something so remarkable, you don’t just doff your cap to them. Instead, you feel compelled to take off all of your clothes and do a sexy dance before their very eyes. Rumney Valley rock/metal goliaths Revoker have achieved such a feat. The South Walians have recently signed to the legendary Roadrunner Records, currently home to Slipknot, Korn, Rob Zombie, Madina Lake and literally dozens of other mammoth metallic Gods. Their position in this company is still, obviously, fresh and unfamiliar. But with a pounding support tour with Soulfly under their belts, as well as some dangerously loud demos filtering through ahead of what looks set to be a malleus-mashing album, it’s not one they look set to give up very easily. The MMP met with the frontman Jamie Mathias and drummer Jack Pritchard, resisted the temptation to do its sexy dance, and enquired as to how their goats were herding. Interview & Words: Simon M. HOW IN THE NAME OF GADGET ARE YOU? JM: Very good. One pint of lager and I’m happy! WITH NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS SUCH AS DRAGONFORCE AND CRADLE OF FILTH, VERY FEW UK ARTISTS HAVE SIGNED TO ROADRUNNER. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PART OF THAT FEW? JM: Amazing. Since we started in 2006 it’s always been our dream. We were always saying that Roadrunner would be our perfect home. When we found out the news that they wanted to sign us, we couldn’t believe it. Pretty much all of the bands Roadrunner have got signed we are massive fans of. Slipknot. Machinehead. Rob Zombie. HOW DID THE SIGNING COME ABOUT? JM: We’ve always been in bands before we all joined Revoker but in 2006 we all started writing our own music. And we started playing every club in South Wales and England. And about a year ago we wanted to record an album so we went to a studio in Newport and Benji (Webbe) of Skindred was there and he was really interested in producing us. So we did the album and sent it off to a few record labels and had a few people interested but when Roadrunner showed interest, that was it. From there we did a show in Manchester in a place called Satan’s Hollow, they came to see us and poached us afterwards. It was actually Monty Connor from America - the same guy who signed Slipknot and Trivium - he’s never signed a UK act before and he’s been working for Roadrunner since 1980. That’s amazing, that is. JP: It was off the back of a load of hard work. We were doing gigs every day. JM: Because we were called A470 before Revoker, some people think we just came along and got signed in two minutes. But it’s not been like that at all, we’ve done our groundwork. We’ve played every club in South Wales often to the sound man and his dog. We’ve worked for it. YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU’D WORKED WITH BENJI WEBBE (DUBWAR / SKINDRED) - HOW DID THAT RELATIONSHIP WORK

OUT? JM: We met him when recording an EP and he heard some stuff and thought it was awesome. We got friendly, started talking and he said ‘I’m really interested in producing you’ and we couldn’t turn it down really. And the thing is with Benji is that he has such brilliant ideas as a producer and he’s so experienced. Plus, we’re all on the same page and know what we want as an album so it worked out really well. HOW ARE YOU PROGRESSING WITH THE DEBUT LP? JP: Just little bits left now. JM: Yeah. We’ve got 16 songs finished more or less, we may have less on the LP, and we’re just finishing guitar solos and then we’re done. It’s looking like it should be coming out around Springtime next year. JP: The first quarter of 2011, we reckon. JM: The album we recorded with Benji got us signed, and now we’ve re-recorded some songs and done a few more. Every song on the album has got its own identity, it’s not the same one 16 times. It’s gonna sound much bigger than the myspace demos. Chunky riffs and good catchy melodies. But not like Justin Bieber (laughs). HOW DID YOUR ROLE SUPPORTING SOULFLY GO DOWN WITH THE FANS? JM: It went down great, yeah, awesome. We did 7 dates with them and in some places we didn’t go down so well as others. Obviously when you pay to see Soulfly you come to see Soulfly. But in the majority of places, it went really, really well. JP: Talking to people at the end of the show, the feedback was great. JM: And next year we’re touring with Rob Zombie. We’re labelmates now, so in February we’re opening up before Skindred and Rob Zombie. Apparently, the whole tour’s sold out. JP: He hasn’t been on tour in 12 years. He’s been off with his lush missus (laughs). We’re gutted that there’s no gig in Wales, though. God knows why that hasn’t been scheduled - two Welsh bands on the bill but not one show here. THOUGH THE FIELD IS BIG, THERE DON’T SEEM TO BE ALL

THAT MANY ROCK/METAL BANDS FROM WALES RECEIVING ATTENTION. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF PLAY FOR WELSH METAL? JM: As you say, there’s a lot of unsigned metal bands out there. A lot of them are good as well. But I think there’s a lot of bands all doing the same thing and trying to be each other. No-one’s different now, it’s all been done, until something completely original comes along. I think people just need to keep on top of it and be different in your own way. Don’t follow anyone. There’s nothing wrong with following your influences to a point, but when everyone’s doing the same trend, they need to pull their head out. ANY BANDS STANDING OUT FOR YOU IN THE LOCALE RIGHT NOW? JM: There’s a band from Cardiff called Tidal. They used to be called Derail. I don’t know what they’re doing with recordings at the moment, I think they’ve got some rough demos on their myspace. But if you see them live they are awesome. They’ve got some Southern rock stuff going on, if they get in the studio and record to good quality, they’ve got some really good songs. JP: Jizzwagon. We met them at a gig in Newport and we’ve been friends ever since. They’re taking their own path. JM: They’re a mixture of Black Sabbath and Wolf Mother. If they changed their name, they could do it, like (laughs). WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS IN YOUR GLOBAL TAKEOVER? JP: Just gig! JM: Well, we’re obviously releasing the album and we have some plans to tour Europe next year. But the basic plan is to play everywhere. Every city. We want everyone to hear our music. People haven’t heard stuff like this for a long time. In the short term though we’ve got a show in Le Pub in Newport in January and we’re playing a festival in Holland - Monsters of Mannheim - and the Rob Zombie tour too.

CaStLeS “Schmaltzy, cutesy music lovers would be best advised to pivot 180° and run, run as fast and as far away as possible or man up and embrace the oddity.”

The grandiose imposing landscapes of North Wales’ doomladen mountains and ethereal heritage marry in some surreal cacophony of mist. And it’s this fog that gets to the locals. I swear it, man, something strange is going on behind closed doors and MMP just can’t pin it. From the same school as the tremendous We//Are//Animal and Masters In France it appears that some sort of electro myrmecoleon has torn the frickin’ entrails out of a community of musicians and is parasitically yanking the wires with vivacious enthusiasm. CaStLeS are the latest mutant victims reeking sourblooded havoc and unsurprisingly so, seeing as multi-instrumental brothers Cynyr and Dion Hamer feature in the aforementioned We//Are//Animal and have honed their disturbing craft since 2008. Congealing beautifully out of the grey, remote slate mining community of Llanrug, CaStLeS were 08 The MMP December 2010

infected and consumed by the dense, damned backdrop. So it makes perfect sense that such strange music should contaminate the MMP airwaves. Initially as a two-piece the band were locked away with only a zombified myna bird and an 8-track digital recorder, these sessions have produced the sort of hauntingly raw progeny of miscreant demos one may expect from the spawn of slate. And recently Calvin Thomas’ possessed, angulated bass-lines have completed the menagerie. Since then the group have been lauded by the likes of BBC Radio Wales, 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and Radio One and performed their brand of spectral lofi at the Big Weekend in Bangor..

there is something not quite stable going on here. Dion Hamer’s reverb soaked croons are punctuated with soothing and disturbing instrumentals in equal measure. It sounds unlikely to marry elements of Sparklehorse with the uncompromising attitude of Death From Above 1979, but CaStLeS have created their own identity with elements from the two. And, honestly, it’s weird!

Schmaltzy, cutesy music lovers would be best advised to pivot 180° and run, run as fast and as far away as possible or man up and embrace the oddity because

N.E.o.N The New Exhibition of Noise here are few more cockle-warming things than the feeling that comes from seeing a group of diverse folks all pulling together for a common goal. The kind of behaviour you’d see in mass floods or zombie outbreaks. Sadly, though, such communityspirited activities are rarely carried out for the purposes of music. And if they are it’s normally for some mediocre charity song or ego-driven supergroup. So, when reports came into MMP HQ of a bum-spankingly new and genuinely boomshakalaka Cardiff hip-hop collective comprising disparate forces from the likes of Wonderbrass, Tattsyrup, Johnny Action Finger and MC par excellence Skunkadelic; our ears pricked faster than a frightened warthog. The New Exhibition Of Noise (N.E.O.N.) were formed in January 2010, apparently with the primary motivation of doing something just that little bit different. In their short life thus far, they have certainly done that. Their sparkling live show sutures together so many different forces, it’s hard to keep track. Skunkadelic’s lyrical, flowing rhymes bring the hip-hop representation; Booboo’s feminine vocals ooze the kind of soul that makes you want to lick walls; Angharad Evans’ saxophony tosses funk snowballs at innocent passers by; Infamous Len beats the decks like an animated DJ warrior; and then there’s the oh-so-tight bass and 010 The MMP December 2010

drums directing traffic with rhythmic sensitivity. It’s a goddamn cluster grenade of cornucopic, sonic stimulus. What’s more incredible is the fact that all of these inputs into the overall project never overshadow one another. The composition of their set has become so perfectly balanced that every fantastical element rises together for the collective goal of the song. Which brings us back to where we started. Thank Karl Marx for these hip-hop-funk-ska-jazz-soul hybridists, they are out there forming an army of unexpected allegiances. They don’t need to do it, but they do it for all of our sakes. The very least you can do is catch them in one of their upcoming shows this month on the 12th December in Buffalo or on the 18th in Gwdihw. We can assure you, you won’t be disappointed. Charlie Francis Fact for the day - Charlie Francis’ CV bulges like a bulbous banana. R.E.M., Wilco, Turin Brakes, Kaiser Chiefs, Robyn Hitchcock and the Super Furries are but a few of the international and local stars to have benefited from this wise wizard of production. And at an anecdotal level, anyone who can speak of sharing a room with John Paul Jones as he plays mandolin, is well worth catching up with from our point of view. With this in mind, we hunted Mr. Francis down to see how he boils his bechamel... HOW IN THE NAME OF LUCIFER’S BEARD ARE YOU? I’m very well thanks. Just getting over a nasty flu, it’s been longwinded and pernicious. DOES YOUR APPROACH TO RECORDING CHANGE PROJECT BY PROJECT OR DO YOU HAVE A METHOD? I think artists are just people, really. So whether they are famous or obscure you just have to treat them as individuals and get on. It’s about working out what’s the music in front of you. And what are the expectation of the people you are working with. Some people want lots of hands-on, others just want you to record it and hold their hand. WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT A PROJECT? I can’t do something I hate. If it was abominable, I wouldn’t do it. But generally speaking, any project has its own intrigue. It’s an eternal mystery. Every day you learn something new. Every song you work on, even though you are doing similar things to other songs, it’s an entity in its own right. And the question is how do we best represent this piece of music? It’s never gotten boring yet. The things that keep me going are the fact that every band is different and that’s self-renewing. Working with people 25 years younger than me, I want to learn what’s exciting them. And that’s really 012 The MMP December 2010

refreshing. I just heard Efterklang. There’s too many old farts, my age, still talking about Dark Side Of The Moon.

for a week or so. He’s fantastic. He’s got such a grasp of advanced recording techniques.

YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL REPUTATION. WHAT HAS MADE YOU THE MAN YOU ARE? I’ve worked with a lot of people and I’m really happy with that. And because I was in bands for a long time, that’s the perspective I still take. So whenever I’m dealing with anyone, it’s what they’re about that most interests me. I hear about other producers, or engineers, who tell bands that they can’t do what they want, they try and impose ideas. I don’t understand why you would do that. I try and treat everyone the same way and encourage them to think of themselves as artists.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTICULAR AXES TO GRIND AS AN EXPERIENCED VETERAN? I increasingly come across people who’ve had something self-recorded and have bought into the idea that they can do it all. And often they end up disappointed because it doesn’t sound right. I often end up fixing tracks for people who’ve been limited by how they’ve recorded them. And I don’t mind that, I enjoy doing it. But it’s a false economy really. It makes as much sense to come to someone who knows what they are doing. There are some remarkably talented people in Cardiff who are distracted by which compressor mic to use and learning the new techniques, neglecting what their real craft should be. It’s not the best use of their time. I’ve said this to a few guys ‘get your songs together, rehearse your band to death, get sounding as good as you possibly can and come and record with me.’ Do that rather than sit in a room working out how to record for two years. It’s a waste, really.

HOW WAS IT WORKING WITH R.E.M.? Well, with someone like R.E.M. there’s never a question of whether they can afford another day’s studio time. You have to assess it with everyone you work with but someone like R.E.M. just want you to do what they hired you for. They’re a joy to work with, really nice people. But it wasn’t my role to stick my fingers in any pies regarding arrangements. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’ve just been mixing a song for Lucky Delucci today. Also, almost finished some mixes for Victorian English Gentlemens Club and I’m going to be working on the Threatmantics album. And, in December, Rob Jones (The Voluntary Butler Scheme) is coming

New Years Eve!!

When you work as hard as the MMP, time ceases to be linear. Instead months pass in days, minutes in moments and seconds in, um, nanoseconds. Hence our bewilderment that we are now able to provide you all a preview of the innumerate ways you can celebrate the seemingly sudden end to 2010. Live Reviews

Jayce Lewis

Der Golem w/ Reflektor 2

Millennium Music Hall, 30th October

Chapter, 31st October

Jayce Lewis, known as the Welsh Icon in India and filling out stadiums left, right and centre, returned with something of the sense of a hometown hero for this Halloween themed LP launch. When featuring him earlier in the year, the MMP were endeared by his down-to-earth attitude as well as his artistic commitment to the music he produces. Aiming for a full room of people in the upper area of Millennium Music Hall is undeniably ambitious for most, so it’s to Lewis’ credit (and perhaps the Bogiez nightclub running alongside the performance) that by 10:45pm the crowd was beginning to burgeon. Indeed, the VIP area was so full that this reviewer embraced his inner Marxist and stood with his common man on the slightly less packed dance floor.

This MMP reviewer has never admired the tricks and treats of Halloween, preferring the absence of this particular unnerving human contact generally experienced every other day. So a silent movie with a live jazz soundtrack in a darkened room sounded just the ticket. The silent movie in question was Paul Wegener and Carl Boese’s Der Golem (1920) and formed part of an event held by Cardiff University’s sciSCREEN. Born with the aim of encouraging insightful links between culture and science, the sciSCREEN format has thus far extended primarily to sci-fi / fantasy / horror blockbusters such as Inception and The Wolfman followed by wine, nibbles and thoughtful discussion after the fact.

When Lewis eventually took to the stage following an unexplained, and rather frustrating, 45 minute delay he did so with all of the pomp you’d expect from someone who has played in front of thousands on a regular basis. His Icon face mask was donned, he was pounding the free-standing drums like an enraged swan, and, all in all, he was pretty rocking. He even had pyrotechnics, for Christ’s sake. When played live, his forthcoming album has all the primacy and tribalism of a clan of cannibals. Heavy beats, crunching synths, driven riffs and plenty of noise. His breakthrough track, Icon, may well have still remained one of the more potent in the set, but this shouldn’t detract from what was a thoroughly professional, yet very real feeling performance.

With Der Golem the visual and musical were entwined in a swell of signifiers which was genuinely intoxicating. Reflektor 2, whose accomplished work on soundtracking this type of film has extended already to Metropolis and Nosferatu among others, were notable for their sustained presence throughout. Playing free-form jazz piano and saxophone solidly for 84 minutes is no mean feat and to offer as much textural resonance with the moving image as they did was, quite frankly, remarkable. The scene of the Golem’s awakening was particularly effective, tracing the eeriness of mood perfectly. However, while their stamina was commendable there was a sense that a few breathers may have added to the night’s overall kookiness. Silence is, after all, pretty scary too. Post-film, glasses were chinked and popcorn was munched as academics engaged with the general public to uncover thematic threads of science, knowledge and myth in relation to the movie. Overall, very clever stuff

The Divine Comedy

LCD Soundsystem

The Gate, 8th November

Cardiff International Arena, 12th November

Given a last minute reprieve to this sell out, the MMP sped across town to The Gate with its special, purple, journalist-on-duty lights at full flash. Following an awkward stumble along the pewed seats, seemingly full of disembodied and unexpected legs, I was finally in place for this much-anticipated show.

Dimmed lights in Cardiff’s International Arena greet LCD Soundsystem’s enigmatic front man James Murphy who in turn is the reciprocate of a rapturous welcome from the Cardiff masses. Freebird requests politely shunned, the band launch themselves into percussive electro-clash, disco, punk stomper Dance Yrself Clean and, quite frankly, tear the place up.

We were first greeted by Cathy Davey as support. Donning a tambourine as a rather fetching garter and with an electric guitar in hand she was otherwise musically unarmed. Saying that, her subtlest weapon was her vocal - sugarcoated and sweet it drifted from Cerys Matthews to Joanna Newsom to Katie Melua. It sounded pure and clean, as did her melodies, but the playing and electric aesthetic left a discombobulating rawness.

Earlier British retro-electro stalwarts Hot Chip had taken the stage and waltzed through an, admittedly lukewarm, set for a band at the top of their genre. But after initial teething problems, an unusually noisy rendition of Hold On gave glimpse of the band they can be. Perhaps the early billing took its toll on the band; who never really got going. Nevertheless, Over And Over got the CIA bouncing and set closer Ready For The Floor was particularly well received.

Following a short break, the crowd were given opportunity to heckle, shout and scream. Indeed, to many of those aged between 25 and 35 and influenced by the memory of his witty, quintessentially British songsmithery through the last 20 years, Neil Hannon is something of a deity. And tonight he was marvellous. Sewing in spectacularly good tracks from his new LP Bang Goes The Knighthood (I Like, The Complete Banker, Can You Stand On One Leg?) with a broader career retrospective, few would have been left unhappy. Tracing ground as cherished as The Frog Princess, National Express, Becoming More Like Alfie on solo piano and guitar to rapturous ovations, Hannon cut a very dapper, giving and talented man indeed. He is a well-loved and deeply valued institution across the UK, and on this cold November night he proved that he will be for some time to come.

But indisputably the evening belonged to LCD Soundsystem. Throughout the course of an hour and a quarter the band displayed a 3-dimensional celestation of raw synthtopia. The addition of former Melvins and Fantomas noisemaker Pat Mahoney on guitar and sawtooth princess Nancy Whang operating a selection of circuit bent keyboards and patch synths injected some cerebral hypnotic grit into the evening.

018 The MMP December 2010

If media whisperings are to be believed this could well have been your last chance to catch James Murphy’s troupe under their current guise. Never a man to rest on his laurels, Murphy flitters between the soaring croon of I Can Change to the punk influenced All My Friends, the evening concludes with the triumphant frenzy of Home. If this is to be Soundsystem’s swansong, they’re heading out on a high.

Releases ISLET Wimmy

4.3 Listening to Islet can be like a cow eating grass. Only after the difficult-to-digest cellulose has been broken down by the first few parts of the stomach can the cow reap benefits – and it may take a few listens before Wimmy, the Cardiff band’s second mini-album, reveals itself for the real treat that it is. Take Ringerz. Layered with distortion, synth-y effects and unusual drum rhythms, what lies beneath is a true pop masterpiece with a nod to Animal Collective, and Horses And Dogs which has enough ideas to fill out an entire album. Dub-inspired bass lines, casually spoken-word vocals, a prog-like guitar solo mid-song, and the most random yet utterly brilliant r’n’b vocal breakdown; yet to say the song ‘works’ would be an understatement. Songs that may seemingly start as incoherent and disorientating racket will, given time, mould into a fantastic hypnotising and clattering collection of smashedtogether ideas. Wonderful. JOSEPH & DAVID So Short Of Time EP

BARE LEFT Bare Left EP

4.8

As an attempt to do some subconscious work, this reviewer initially tried to listen to Joseph & David while nodding off at 1am in the morning. However, within 12 minutes, writing had commenced. The thought process was, briefly, like this: this sounds like Bon Iver, oh no, it’s like Damien Rice, no, wait, this is just bloody brilliant. Because it does sound a bit like Damien Rice, particularly during David Henshaw’s more bellowing moments. And the intro to Father does bear remarkable comparison to Bon Iver’s Flume. But there’s far more to it than that. There are all manner of disparate characteristics and fragments of the familiar - a Banhart-esque quaver on the incredible One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong; Talk Talk’s understanding of textures throughout; and the piano classicism of Nils Frahm on Show Me - but So Short Of Time is outstandingly and resolutely its own beast. Complexly instrumented, lyrically imaginative, yet melodically pristine - genuinely, this is folkin’ awesome. SMR myspace.com/josephanddavidmusic

2.9 Carmarthenshire trio Bare Left are a female fronted melodic alt-rock outfit. The tunes on this five track EP are dark in tone and quite sparse, often relying on the vocals to pull them through; chunky but straightforward and repetitive riffs from the guitar back up simple drums which do the job of keeping time but don’t experiment or inspire. There is some potential here, mostly in the vocal delivery, which shows off a reasonable range and has plenty of emotional depth, however, at the moment these tunes feel a bit too basic and limited, sounding like they are from a very new band with some work to do. The track that shows the most promise here is Doctor Peters - the band let lose a bit on the rigid guitar riffs and that opens things up and makes it more memorable, more like this and they could be on to something. EG myspace.com/bareleft

YR ODS Yr Ods EP

4.2 Skilfully wielding nostalgia without breaching pastiche, the hype surrounding Yr Ods EP is certainly well founded. All five tracks are laced with a sweet melancholy, harking back to the synth-driven sounds and sentiments of 1980s anti-anthems. Tracks like Cofio Chdi O’r Ysgol, Paid Anghofio Paris and the standout Y Bêl yn Rowlio are steeped in wistful, tragi-romantic lyrical imagery, with the wonderful complement of a sensitively produced rhythm section and tastefully sourced synthesizer sounds. Nid Teledu Oedd y Bai works with more a contemporary feel, rife with punchy groove and hooks so catchy they leave you needing a repeat prescription. The slightly anomalous Turn Around doesn’t quite gel as coherently as the rest of the EP, with too many jolty structural and metric changes, but redeemed by Yr Ods’ flair for addictively poppy choruses. A triumphant, engaging release from a band oozing with promise. ST myspace.com/yrods

MR. HUW Dirty North Walians

3.8

Following the considerable and well-deserved success of Hud a Llefrith, Mr Huw’s latest release, Dirty North Walians, is another colourful display of sonic diversity and pop judiciousness. The album teems with well-crafted, charming songs that jar with their dark themes and tricksy, wry humour. Most impressive is Mr Huw’s flair for twisting his sinister comedies in and around poppy hooks and choruses. The standout Can You Feel My Soul reels off wonderful lines like ‘if I leave you alone you’ll find my porn collection’, or from Desperate and Bored - ‘what’s new then my dead friends? I envy everything you do’. In contrast, the relentless and evocative drive of tracks like Creuaduriaid Byw (Living Creatures) tugs at warped heartstrings with its global insight and message. The overall impression is a pleasurably satisfying listen on all fronts, from Mr Huw’s clear wordwizardry to engaging, poppy structures, can’t wait to hear more. ST mrhuw.com

H. HAWKLINE A Cup Of Salt

4.2 In his years on the circuit, Cardiff-based musician Huw Evans (H. Hawkline) has played with the likes of Richard James, Sweet Baboo, and Cate Le Bon. Largely unnoticed by the masses, this looks likely to change soon; touring with Gruff Rhys, support slots for label (Shape Records) mates Islet, and the release of this, his wonderful debut album. Huw has numerous sides; demonstrated both during his live performances and here – songs ranging throughout krautrock-influenced and psychy pop/rock to weird and spooky instrumental folk. For instance, opener An Old Lady Sings/Pentecostal is (after one-minute of old lady singing introduction) three minutes of looping noise, walking bass-line, fuzzed guitar, and driving motorik drum beat; and From Her Eyes goes from menacing piano keys to Eastern/gypsy-sounding guitar and banjo work to unusually chanted vocals. Each song on show is incredibly well layered and crafted. If A Cup of Salt doesn’t bring him widespread adoration then the masses are rubbish. JM myspace.com/hhawkline

LOVE PARRY III The Race For The Poisoned Chalice EP

Releases 4.0

With a title sounding like an unwritten Indiana Jones blockbuster, when placing Love Parry III’s disc in the stereo the MMP was braced for a journey of adventure, potentially involving Nazis. While in the latter instance we were left disappointed, the EP itself is rather good. Dashing an electro path throughout, it all commences with Draw resplendent in bubbling synths, bursts of brass and angularly cool duetting vocalisms. The excellent Toy Box follows with Luke Taylor’s lyrical writing being backed by textured big beat programmes and loops, as well as the cooing female backing of Ellie Jayne Burton and Sigrid Muller. The Fabulous Ones takes on a more linear pop formula but still adds interesting elements, somehow sounding like Dirty Projectors in spite of itself. With a lush Hans Zulu Black Kat remix of Toy Box thrown in to boot, this is a generous release but one that leaves you wanting more. In a good way. SMR myspace.com/loveparryiii

JONATHAN POWELL The Flight & Other Stories

3.7

If there was ever an act of nailing flags to masts, it was Jonathan Powell’s decision to open his second album with an eight minute epic. The Flight is a mightily ambitious, yet brilliantly composed challenge to the listener. Throwing melodic hooks and orchestration at it, yet maintaining textural stability, it largely works. Beyond that there is a panoramic sense of ambition throughout which is both impressive and bewildering. There are points in the transition between a Crazy Horses-esque sea-shanty (Old Black Joe), Edie which sounds like a glock-wielding Paul Simon, shuffling alt-country (The Ballad Of Sarah Jones) and the broader dedication to big acoustic pop particularly found in The Love Song (I Never Wrote You), where it’s possible to become a little confused. Nevertheless, Powell produces classic pop songwriting not dissimilar from the Randy Newmans of this world. And in terms of composition and musicianship, The Flight & Other Stories keeps pace with the finest chamber pop acts. SMR jonathanpowellmusic.com

WE//ARE//ANIMAL Idolise

4.9

Last month we emphasised We//Are//Animal’s ‘crunchy textures’ and ‘rigid deep grooves’ as well as their explosive rockin’ firework testes. Here, on Idolise, they display all of those proudly, setting the latter off at will with a wild grin on their faces. It is, in two words, utterly exceptional. Kicking in with 1268, the rockingly industrious synths and percussion and Ginsberg’s distorted vocal sound searingly raw and fresh. It’s a flippin’ 3-minute thrill ride. Unfold Fold’s slow-burning intro gives way to chopped guitar and falsetto woos reminiscent of The Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil. Then there’s Black Magic: psychedelic, coiled and ready to spit, this is a hallucinogenic snake of a track. Feeding Off The Energy and Super Overdrive are both poundingly precise, grinding and yet enduringly melodic. Highlights come thick and fast and, in fact, endlessly. If the LP stumbles, it does so gracefully. Perhaps, Empire could have been shaved but even that is astoundingly cool. Amazing stuff. SMR myspace.com/weareanimal

COLORAMA Cerdyn Nadolig

NICK B. BYRNE 4:15am

4.3 Thank Santa for the endless inner beauty of Colorama’s Carwyn Ellis. Following up November’s stunning Box LP with a special bonus EP of Christmas songs shows Sufjan Stevens proportioned productivity and a not too dissimilar intent. Anyone who is vaguely aware of Colorama’s increasingly fantastical output will not be surprised that this is another peachy orange. Anyone who isn’t aware of Colorama really should be by now. Cerdyn Nadolig displays Ellis’ gift for making the Welsh language sound extraordinarily poetic as he croons about wrapping paper, putting trees up and returning home. All motifs of the classic Xmas songs, I’m sure you’ll agree. Better still is Paddy Power And Glory that borrows from the sentiment of The Pogues and delivers something up there with Fairytale Of New York for downbeat, romantic yuletide ambience. Throw in the technically exquisite guitar instrumental of In The Bleak Midwinter and Welsh folk song Lisa Lan and you have the perfect stocking filler. Nice. SMR myspace.com/coloramasound

3.8 After fronting Welsh rock bands Evolvers and Novello, Nick B Byrne offers an eclectic and emotional solo debut with 4:15 AM. Kicking off with the title track, 4:15 is a grungy, dirty riff affair, hinting at influences such as Nirvana. Anna is a soaring, dark ballad, with powerful vocals and searing melodies. The Haunting is just that; a lingering and poignant melody, with evocative vocals that seem to be Byrne’s trademark style. I Couldn’t See The Devil Behind Me has a more bluesy sound, with layers of harmonious guitar riffs and bold melodies. Mother is a sensitive, emotional tribute to a lost parent, with a stripped back sound and moving lyrics. Overall, 4:15AM is a confident and self-assured debut, offering lyrical originality and creative musicianship. It’s easy to spot influences from the likes of Jeff Buckley and Chris Isaac, but Byrne has the skill to create a special debut offering. BJ myspace.com/nickbbyrne

JOSHUA CAOLE Slow Hearts EP

3.9 Rich in the sounds of Americana, and sharing its melancholy beauty, Caole’s Slow Hearts EP is one lushly instrumented gift of a release. The brushed drums, soothed backing vocals and tightly picked guitars of Wish You Were Where sets the tone with Caole coming across somewhere between Gram Parsons and Ryan Adams. The uptempo, solid alt-country vocal melody of One Of You Again follows on and offers similar exquisite technique and composition. Please Don’t Try To Reach Me Now brings the harmonica on board and alongside it some Nashville Skyline-era Dylan to the mix. Final track Don’t Lead Me Astray’s relatively sparse intro lends it an otherworldly timelessness which then shifts briefly into almost mediaeval-psychedelia when everything kicks in. It’s really quite bewitching. One potentially divisive issue could be Caole’s wavering vocal which, while to this listener sounds emotive in its occasional fragility, may not be to universal taste. Nevertheless, this is top draw roots music. SMR myspace.com/joshuacaole

Releases THE DAMN BLAGS The Damn Blags

4.3

Sometimes spotting latent musical ability is akin to finding a good bottle of wine in Tesco. There is so much choice on offer and most of it is perfectly serviceable but, once in a while, a seriously good vintage pops up when you least expect. The Damn Blags are a case in point. Their eponymous album has been four years in the making and is worth the wait. Difficult to categorise, they often rely on haunting, minimalist keyboard riffs married with a groovy rhythm section to create what could be called ambient funk. Their soundscape is relentlessly urban and it’s easy to see why the Adam Waltons and Huw Stephens of this world rave about them. Performing in both English and Welsh and with assured production values, it can only be a matter of time before they are catapulted to greater things. This is not bargain basement it is Premier Cru. BB myspace.com/thedamnblags

FOURTH AUTUMN Mock The Weak

4.0

With extreme metal (or metal of any sort for that matter) not receiving that much praise in South Wales, slick efforts like this find it difficult to make themselves known in such a bustling community of musical movements that is our fair capital. Luckily this winter has spawned a lot of good local extreme metal releases, with this EP being the first I got round to reviewing. Arguably a black metal effort with death metal tinges, this record goes beyond the frozen forests of just black metal, and cheekily verges into the often avoided metalcore genre, adding a new dimension of hostility (but with far less kung-fu moves). With no aversion to solos, and enough blast beats involved to reinvigorate the Valleys’ mining industry, this record acts as a nicely proportioned slice of what South Wales has to offer in terms of extreme music. JP myspace.com/fourthautumn

HOWL GRIFF The Hum

3.0 Comprising some of the tracks from previous Bluebirds EP, Howl Griff’s The Hum is initially a very familiar sounding chunk of indie-folk-pop. Bluebirds and Crash And Burn splatter out intriguing guitar riffs and stir them in with a traditional pop, verse-chorus song structure. The latter of the two’s incorporation of brass and handclaps give it a joyous pastiche of previous decades sounding at points like Squeeze, others like The Beatles and others like Ash. Giving It The Always brings a lounge-funk vibe to the affair and the delicate selection of borrowed genres is to their credit. Uduhudu’s stomping intro, smart rhymes (Edison - medicine?) and wonky keyboards sound more psyched out than the rest of the material. What pulls all of this together, though, is a clean production that would blend well with daytime television and housewives’ stereos. There are interesting songs here but they are buried beneath an overpolished veneer. SMR howlgriff.com

Demo Reviews JORDAN PLAYFAIR

ROMANTIC RIGHTS

THE LONG AGOS

Two facts about Jordan Playfair: 1) he has the coolest genuine name ever; 2) he is a talented bastard. These demos may not be produced to Huey Lewis & The News standards but, my word, they are impressive. Playfair’s most striking quality is his vocal which sometimes sounds like a tender Eddie Vedder and at others carries all of the weight of Odetta in 1963. The fact that he has already learned to craft his songs around it so effortlessly shows demonstrative maturity. Black On Me, for instance, while hissily produced, offers such emotive depth and wisdom in both music and lyric it could have been written by King Solomon. A potentially remarkable find. SMR

You And I starts off in somewhat nostalgic fashion, peculiarly cross-breeding indie sentiment with synths that sound like they have been plucked straight from the end credits of a retro arcade machine from the Street Fighter era. A bit whiney at times, the record fluctuates between well-produced, squeaky-clean synthpop, and indie-tinged boy band-quality material that would have blended in well during the wanton excesses of the 1990s. Somehow this all culminates in a somewhat sugary take on 3OH!3 and although this is refined and well executed stuff, the demo could easily be summarised in the term “I’m not a fan, but the kids like it”. JP myspace.com/weareromanticrights

Taking their name form a classic Small Faces track, Port Talbot based five piece The Long Agos offer stripped down, back to basics tracks on this acoustic demo. Easing us in gently is Escapehook; a soothing, melodic track with ethereal vocals and laid back grooves. The live recording of Everything’s Happening is a more upbeat affair, but still retains an authentic, acoustic vibe which runs throughout. Obergurgl has a slicker, more finely tuned sound, which complements the more casual sound of Burying The Body and The Grandfather Clock. Overall The Long Agos have an amiable sound, with worthy lyrical dexterity. BJ myspace.com/thelongagos

Single Reviews JETS TO ZURICH Crimson Tide This is a pretty solid alt-rock single from the Aberdare trio, the first of three to be released over the next year as part of the package with their new indie label Catalyst Records. The Jets To Zurich sound has nods to 90s grunge (Pearl Jam et al), which explains the nicely fuzzy guitar based tune and the juicy bass which sometimes brings to mind Queens Of The Stone Age. The single has a hooky, catchy melody, one of those nice simple choruses that are so easy to sing along to and bouncy riffs. A tidy package all round. EG myspace.com/jetstozurich

THE STAND I’ll Be There This veritable Welsh supergroup comprises actor Jonathan Owen (Svengali & more), Catatonia’s Owen Powell, Super Furry Animals’ Guto Pryce and Ryan Richards of Funeral For A Friend fame combining their collective powers for a re-interpretation of Cardiff City FC’s terrace anthem I’ll Be There. With vocals taken primarily by everyman Jonathan Owen and a polished yet rough trad-rock backing from some of the city’s finest musicians, it is really rather stirring in a workingclass, jumpers for goalposts kind of way. And that’s the very point of it. As well as a new statue outside the stadium and the memory of Stuart Cable. A worthy cause that should be supported. SMR Available on YouTube

WILL CLARKE EP 1 Will Clarke is the kind of musician that girls could take home to their mother without fear of being written out of the family inheritance. The two tracks on EP1 are relentlessly poppy and it would be hard to imagine anyone being offended by his insistent cheesy sound. It would be unfair to be over critical of what is offered here but as Mr Clarke builds on his undoubted lyrical talents it might be worth remembering that even the nice girls like a bit of a bad boy sometimes. Looking forward to EP2, yes, but waiting to see what depth there is to his initial promise. BB myspace.com/willclarkemusic

Kaptin’s Column

There are many plus sides to my line of work. It is perhaps one of the only jobs where you’re actually encouraged to drink, where I can justify a couple of days partying my tits off as work; or as research. This brings a few pitfalls, as a habitual last-minuter with deadlines, I’m ill equipped to deal with writing a column on the laptop after somebody spilt beer on it during the fourth night in a row where alcohol has been a contributing factor. However if I bottle up my thoughts for another month they are likely to runneth over and become Kaptin’s page, and my amigo Ruffstylz next door has far too much great stuff to say for that to happen. So here I am still rather drunk, texting the Editor my ramblings so I might instigate a mass uprising of right-mindedness that would make the recent student demos look like the lisvane knitting league’s annual teddy bears picnic. Or at the very least stop myself from getting shouted at for not having this ready in time. You are now privy to my really bad memory as I attempt to unearth the marvels of the coming month without the aid of the facebook events calendar or the ‘recently added’ bit of iTunes. I know that last night at our recently revived Higher Learning Joe Blow passed me the full ‘Genik Riddim’ release from Stagga, him and Skamma. The original has already been bigged up massively by both me and the Ruffmeister here but the remixes from Starkey, Havoc N Deed and other people who’s lack of placement in my recollection system has little to do with the giganticness of their output... Basically, everyone’s a winner. Get it... I certainly need to get it again once I manage to regain the technology!! I also need back my copy of Ming’s album that should be ready to drop on Beatport about now. The kind of Dubstep you could scrub with industrial cleaner and still not dent it’s filth factor. Same goes for Exotope who I briefly mentioned earlier, he’ll be launching his EP at CAI’s Gangsta Christmas bash, however it’s the same night as Plastician at Neuropol so you may need to do a mini club tour that night. I’ll happily play guide. Also on the un-missable lists is the next Astroid Boys gig, they’re new mini album is ridiculously good. They’re also playing with GLC for their Christmad album tour in Clwb... Afraid you’ll have to google dates.. I do know one date mind cos it’s printed out in my pocket, Catapult are holding another digital DJ masterclass with tutorials in Ableton, Traktor, Serato and loads of other packages. It’s 9th December at the store and you can pick up various packages and controllers on the night for back of a lorry prices. Just make sure you get a nice plastic cover for your laptop! I’m off to cry and dig out a bunch of vinyl from storage. Til next month, keep up the good work, the city’s been alive recently and I’m loving it hard. Editor’s Note: Kaptin was indeed drunkenly rambling so we cut him off, but here’s the dates he recommends: Astroid Boys, C.A.I. – 9th Dec Gangsta Xmas Bash, C.A.I. – 10th Dec Plastician at Neuropol, Clwb Ifor Bach - 10th Dec GLC & Astroid Boys, Clwb Ifor Bach – 16th Dec bigLOVE, Kaptin .... Cardiff Rising HADOOOUUUUKEN!! Ruffstylz with the new energy... The b-boy and b-girl community round here is strong. From the representation at the B-Boy Champs in Newport to the quality on show at Breakin’ In The Bay and the Halloween jam Cardiff City Kingz at Cathays Community Centre over the last few months I’ve been so impressed by the dedication and energy everyone’s been pouring out for years and they ain’t stopping. At Breakin’ In The Bay there was a lot of young people dancing and the thing is it used to be a real ‘community’ feel at these events, where you give everyone a go but the quality ain’t necessarily there. Not any more, these kids are on fire! So I just wanna large up all the breakdance fraternity for their talent - Kwamikaze, Slammo, Richard Morgan, Dan Jose, Reckless Lee, Amelia, Nathan and everyone I’ve missed ‘cause there’s many more. They all add so much colour to the city. Plus I found two heavy spitters at Breakin’ In The Bay. In 4Dee’s set he brought out E Why Easy and Yung Jay and they rocked it perfectly. E Why’s on some focused bars flex and Jay’s got some sick mic swagger but backs it up with lyrics. It was a heavy set, you can check videos of them and more at youtube.com/SwagSoundsTV. What I’m gonna put the most energy on though is that Higher Learning is back!!! For the uninitiated, Higher Learning is a hiphop night started nine years ago by me, Dregz and Kaptin that pretty much established the scene in this area and is the reason people started talking about south Wales for its hip-hop - and that’s not thanks to us, it’s thanks to everyone who ever came. So now, thanks totally to Mayor at Associated Minds, we had Sonnyjim, the Eat Good Records fam and Connections at our 9th birthday party at Cardiff Arts Institute, the vibe was just how it used to be and it felt amazing. So watch out for Higher Learning and come and enjoy hip-hop in the best kind of crowd. Another shout goes out to 4Dee and Echo from the UK Zulu Nation for passing through, the first Welsh Dragon Zulu chapter meeting of the Zulu Nation was held on the same day and I’ll advertise now I’m doing a set at Cardiff Arts on Fri Jan 21st with Jugganote and b-boying from 2Dynamic at the premiere of the new Zeitgeist: Moving Forward film, which will be shown for free. It’s been a good month, hold it upwards ........ .... www.myspace.com/ruffstylz .... www.twitter.com/ruffstylz Photo by: Dan Green

RUDE

This ska musical looks set to make Grangetown bounce like brass-addicted loons. Set in 1980 with the arrival of the new Tory government and focusing on Cardiff as a geographical focal point, the story traces the emergence of ska and its history with a splendid live band. Put on by Give It A Name Theatre who received critical acclaim for a production of Heart Of Darkness earlier in the year, the MMP thoroughly recommends this blend of theatre and top-notch tunes.

A Heart Warming December Tale… It was a particularly brutal late December morning a few years ago when J.M Strange found himself rudely awoken to the sounds of screaming children and grunts that can only accompany a flabby creature getting struck by rocks. Trying with all his might he scrambled out from under the recently slain bear he was currently using as a thermal blanket and wandered over to the gaping frost covered hole in the side of his home, a hole that had until a few weeks ago been the starting point for a wholly legitimate medicinal meth laboratory….an experiment which, due partly to Mr Strange’s terrifying lack of any knowledge concerning the delicate chemical arts necessary to construct that most Moorish of high givers…sweet, sweet methamphetamines and a total lack of the surgeons grace needed to handle such a volatile substance was now no longer a way with which he could help the neighbourhood by flooding it with high quality drugs….the way dad used to do it. “What in blue fuck!” He bellowed (with as much command as a blood shot eyed, trouser less man can ever hope to achieve) at the swarm 046 The MMP December 2010

of human shaped things emitting this anti-sleep racket down at street level. The sight laid out before him was a heartbreaking scene indeed. A gaggle of the neighbourhood youths had taken to tormenting a fat, shabby, bearded gentleman currently gutter bound and obviously battling a terrific hangover…. as he struggled to overcome the bonds of post bender trauma, the children, through mocking squawks of laughter, threw physical rockshaped insults at the poor bum…..they’d also managed to collectively hook up all of their iPod power-sources to the man’s exposed toes and where sending regular jolts of low voltage annoyance through his lower half. With each grunted spasm, J.M felt empathy for the man, this was a situation he found himself in most mornings…. and evenings….and thus felt it his duty to help. Quickly unholstering the flare gun he keep sellotaped to his bare back at all times (as the god lord John McLean always preached) he fired in their general direction. “GET THE FUCK OFF’A MY STREET YOU BLURRY SHAPED CHILDRENISH THINGS!?!”

screamed our hero. The children, unsure of what was happening ran quickly into the snow blasted-morning, leaving just J.M and the battered tramp on the street below. “Kurwa children” muttered the man “Yes….quite” responded J.M whilst dialling a number quickly into his phone. “Kurwa, snow…. kurwa street…. kurwa rock shaped rocks” “…uh, uh…” placidly agreed J.M, confused by why this man…clearly not Polish, was using a Polish insult as a comma to his sentences. A few moments later a taxi pulled up before the man, J.M rushed down to street level to greet and help his new friend, who on closer inspection was still tremendously drunk and bleeding very heavily. “Kurwa thank you, kurwa you’re a saint”

“Yes, yes…I know” said J.M humbly, helping the man to his feet and into the taxi. “This will take you some where safe” J.M gently lowered the man into the back seat, then leant in and spoke discretely to the driver. “Please get this guy as far away from me as possible….I don’t have any money to give you now, so get it out of him…just don’t bring him back”. “You’re the boss, chief” The taxi pulled away, and J.M Strange, content, returned to his bed and fell into a deep sleep. And the tramp? Well let’s just say he had no money and got left by the cabby at the side of the road to freeze to death miles from home. Merry Christmas. THE VIEWS OF J.M. STRANGE DO NOT REFLECT THE VIEWS OF THE MMP.
