Having finally shaken off those New Year re-adjustments and forgotten all of 2010’s misdemeanours, it feels 2-0-1-1 has properly commenced. February brought us some fine spectacles with C.W. Stoneking, Efterklang, Thee Vicars, Eux Autres, The Go! Team, Jose Gonzalez and many, many more flowing through the city. And March looks just as peachy. Not least within these pages, where we, as always, accommodate, some of the city’s bulging bile duct of talent. Colorama are ruthlessly quizzed on the back of their unrelenting sequence of triumphs. The rootsy country stylings of Zervas & Pepper are considered and approved. While Afro Cluster’s hip-hop-funk bomb is still being defused as we speak. We are also trebling our live reviewing efforts all for your online delectation at www. themmp.tv, as well as filling these pages with all of the reviews, features, listings and musical paraphernalia you would ever wish for in a handbag/pocket-sized package. Plus, we now have a new column covering your alternative rock and metal needs fronted by the incandescently superb GRAB. Enjoy it you fiends. You’ve earned it. The MMP xx

ROYKSOPP VIDEO FEATURES THE DIFF! At the end of last year international chart toppers Röyksopp launched a competition for film makers to craft them a shiny new music video. The prize included cash but mainly huge amounts of kudos. The winning entry for their song Forsaken Cowboy was created by Matt Callanan and filmed entirely on location in Cardiff. It’s a superb, surreal journey starring a modern day cowboy on a 1970s push bike. Perfectly interpreting the underlying sadness of the music, it’s self-evident why the band chose it to represent them. Starring Chris Capel as the cowboy, who some of us will recognise from the local acoustic circuit, it’s impressive work and we heartily congratulate Senor Callanan and his fine, hearty efforts. The single is available now. mattcallananproductions.com

Small Nations Big Celebrations Wales is home to some delightful little festivals and 2011 sees the 10th birthday of one of its quirkier, non-mainstream events. Small Nations is held on a farm near the pretty village of Cilycwm in the gentle rolling hills of Carmarthenshire. The organisers are promising to pull out all the stops to celebrate their big weekend-long anniversary. This probably means even more exotic acts, outlandish performers and every conceivable type of countryside worshipping maniac you could shake a stick at. It will run from the 8th to the 10th of July and will almost certainly not rain... Happy birthday! smallnations.co.uk

BARFLY BECOMES BOGIEZ! With the ear-shattering death knell of Barfly Cardiff last year, it’s fair to say that the rock population of the city were collectively winded. It was a very sad day indeed. But those of us with hope and spirit always believed that the venue would re-open in some form or another given its prize location and long-held reputation. And sure enough, news has filtered through that Bogiez has taken the Kingsway bar-club over. And what better hands for a rock venue to fall into than the Bogiez crew. With or without a venue, the team have been putting on rock, metal and alternative nights in the city for decades and doing it with the kind of passion that’s essential when organising an entire month-long programme. Promising a blend of live music, band open mics and a continued, full-time run of their trademark club events, rock is truly back on Cardiff’s agenda. Welcome Bogiez Rock Bar and Club! Cardiff Visualized! Submit Your Poster Designs!

Cardiff based designer Adam Chard has dreamed up a cunning plan to help boost the local music scene and promote our wealth of artistic design talent in one fell swoop. He wants almost anyone and everybody to e-mail copies of their gig posters over to create a new blog simply called Cardiff Gig Posters. He intends it to become ‘a visual representation and record of the music scene in our city’. Here at the MMP we delight in showcasing a new artist every month on our cover and have become acutely aware it’s not just musicians finding their feet in the ‘Diff. There’s a whole bleedin’ army of creative types out there in need of some appreciation! So to see a combination of clever designs and fun nights out visit: ............................................... cardiffgigposters.tumblr.com

What We’ve Been

Listening To Simon:

SOAP & SKIN

BROTHER OF SLEEP

Serendipitous and ethereal kookiness from Austria of all places. It’s like a lullaby sang purely to discourage you from moving. But mostly out of fear. Utterly lush vocals and minimalist piano build a little cotton wool omelette to rest your head. myspace.com/soapandskin Aimee:

IT’S ALL COMING INTO FOCUS Focus Wales Festival, to be held at Llangollen Pavilion on 27th/28th May, looks set to pull together a lip-dampening array of Welsh talent - the likes of Masters In France, We//Are//Animal, Paper Aeroplanes, Gallops, Reaper In Sicily, Meilir and The Gentle Good all already being confirmed. The brainchild of Wrexham based promoters Neal Thompson and Andy Jones, the festival is also set to run a competition for bands and musicians to get a prized slot, of which you can find more on the web address below. Alongside the music side of things, though, the “focus” will be on a whole heap of industry minds who are joining in the frivolities with talks, workshops and discussion forums popping up like moles in a healthy soil patch. The MMP, for one, will be there with our tent poles pre-erected. focuswales.com

Cosmo, Cardiff’s premier modern political folkie, has been keeping himself busy as of late. His involvement in the Cardiff branch of the Folk Against Fascism movement has led to several profile gigs in the city, giving a big thumbs down to the BNP’s co-option of folk music for the purposes of hate-spreading and general short-sightedness. Now, though, he’s taken further steps with his wonderfully political new LP Picket Line Party. A new free track will be released every month or so, coinciding more or less with the FAF gigs, so that by year’s end the whole thing will be complete. With titles such as Oh! To Be In England (Now the EDL’s in Town), the MMP are expecting some confrontational but darn well-written songsmithery to come. folkagainstfascism.com ............................ cosmoguitar.net

TU FAWNING

I KNOW YOU NOW

Sheesh. Portland, Oregon increasingly seems a euphemism for bloody magnificent music. This sweetly sung yet eerily instrumented tune brings together manifest ideas - indie, soul, samples, psychedelia, pace shifts and more - while always sounding perfectly contained. Incredible stuff. myspace.com/tufawning Rowan:ULYSSES

EVERYBODY’S STRANGE To find inspiration I often choose the A-Team theme to get me going. If that doesn’t work, a listen to Bath’s four piece ‘future classic rock band’ does the trick. It’s like coffee for your ears. myspace.com/ulyssesgb Sion:

LAURIE ANDERSON

O SUPERMAN As relevant now as it was in ‘81, Anderson deals with concerns and controversies in a subtext that becomes increasingly profound and unmistakably sinister in its implication. 8 minutes of minimal, experimental electronic music isn’t everyone’s bowl of hot bovril, but I’m blown away on every listen... And bovril sucks... myspace.com/officialaurieanderson Johnny:

PJ HARVEY

THE WORDS THAT MAKETH MURDER

Over simple, urgent auto-harp chords and a marching back section, Polly Jean delivering an anti-war song that observes rather than preaches…and it’s so fucking good. pjharvey.net The MMP March 2011 05

COLORAMA

Timelessness is an oft overused term in musical discourse. Yet with Colorama it seems more fitting than most. The ceaselessly beautiful brainwaves of Carwyn Ellis have culminated in a set of releases that, particularly in last year’s Box, are drenched in a sepia-glistening, nostalgic veil. Yet these wonders are unfurling here and now, before your very eyes, and with increasing rapidity. And while the dust of times gone by are referenced in the 60s psych-pop instrumentation and lyrically in Candy Street and Box itself, there is something undeniably fresh about the whole experience. Before Box had arrived the incredible Magic Lantern Show, and the more recent Cerdyn Nadolig also got MMP’s stockings all sweaty just over Christmas. Having worked with Edwyn Collins and played with Jim Noir across the UK, along with a rather fetching band forming, Colorama are poised to quietly explode in 2011. With this in mind, the MMP caught up with Mr. Ellis pre-detonation to see how his eggs were floating... Words & Interview: Simon M. Read Photo By: Jon Pountney

HOW IN THE NAME OF HADES ARE YOU? Never better, thanks.

often have their own voice musically so it’s trying to fit everything in.

WELL DONE ON BOX - AN INCREDIBLE RELEASE. TELL US HOW THE SONGS ALL CAME TOGETHER... They come from two or three different periods in recent times, for me. Half of the songs were written in Liverpool, where I lived before I moved to Cardiff. Then a few more were written down here and a few more on my travels. But the majority of it relates to my time in Liverpool three years ago. I suppose being British, I’m quite slow to process my emotional information. Even then I’m only doing it through songs, not in my own life. There’s something about Liverpool that I find nostalgic. Moving there was a big deal for me, I didn’t know anyone and I’d been living in London most of my adult life, so I just retreated into my own little world. The thrust of the album is about that and the child-like reverie of it all. But if I can give the impression that there’s some emotional depth, that’s great (laughs).

YOU MUST HAVE EXPERIENCED A LOT ON THE ROAD WITH EDWYN COLLINS AS WELL AS WITH COLORAMA AND MANY MORE - ARE YOU FEELING THE BENEFIT OF THESE TOURS? I don’t know if there’s been a point where I thought ‘oh, this is a good set of experiences which I can take this or that from’. I don’t think life’s like that. They’ve all enriched me as a musician and helped shape who I am but in terms of there being anything beneficial or detrimental, I don’t know. I didn’t write songs or sing until quite late and up until that point I was a musician. I was a sad, lost character who needed other bands and people in order to get work and survive (laughs). So it was out of necessity that I did a lot of work. Nothing was ever that bad. And I’ve been lucky in that regard, I’ve worked with some lovely people.

YOU HAVE ACHIEVED A SOUND WHICH SEEMS TIMELESSLY ETHEREAL YET STRANGELY PRESCIENT - HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT? It was a pre-conceived accident in that I chose where to record very carefully and knew the results would be interesting to me, which is the most important thing. We did it in the Isle of Wight and went through our good friend Rupert Brown, I know him through working at Toerag Studios in London. He has his own band called The Motion Pictures who I really liked and has his own studio too. He’s like an another member of the band, although he doesn’t play with us or do gigs, but he’s there in the creative process. He did both Box and Magic Lantern Show. Knowing in my head what the sound of the music would be but knowing which producer to take it to, who would make it magical, was basically how it came about. HOW ARE YOU DEVELOPING YOUR LIVE SOUND? We’re just trying our best. It’s hit and miss. Some gigs are brilliant, some gigs are good. We’re of the mindset that a live sound is different to the record, there’s no point in exactly replicating it. There’s a school of thought that subscribes to wanting to go and see a band play an album or the songs verbatim, but I don’t. It’s nice to surprise people and, for us, having to play every night, we don’t want to do the same thing every time. So that’s why I keep changing things around. I’m settling on a band behind me, but the people I tend to want to work with

YOU’RE, AS TOM WAITS ONCE SAID, BIG IN JAPAN - HOW DOES ONE ACHIEVE THIS? By eating lots (laughs). I don’t know if we’re big in Japan but we have got a couple of records out over there. That happened around 2007 when I went and worked with with a Japanese band who I met in London. We became friends and stayed in touch and they asked me to go over and help pull all of these eclectic instrumentations together into something coherent. I stayed over there for three months and part of the deal was to help me put out some records over there. So we released an EP which sold out, and then they put out our first album, Cookie Zoo, in 2008 and that was only out in Japan. And we’ve just put Box out there a couple of months ago. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU’VE DEVELOPED OVER YOUR CAREER? I think I’m just a better musician. With time, I’m a better musician. I’m a far better singer. I was rubbish when I started. I found it terrifying. Closing my eyes, singing to five people and banging my teeth off the microphone (laughs). The first gig I did with Luca (Guernieri), he was doing sound, and I was enamoured by the old footage of acoustic musicians playing with microphones in front of their guitars, so I wanted it like that. He said it wouldn’t work, and my guitar had no projection, so you couldn’t hear a thing. AS WE MOVE INTO 2011 WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE STATE OF WELSH MUSIC? I think it’s very healthy at the moment. There doesn’t seem to be a coherent national movement, but I don’t think

there ever has been. And that means people have to be fairly self-sufficient. That said, for Welsh speaking bands there’s a much greater chance of getting on the radio or on television. I do feel a bit for bands who are from Nottingham or Carlisle who don’t have access to these things. Being Welsh-language bands, we have more of an opportunity. But in terms of the quality, the status quo is really good in Wales. In Cardiff alone, the music is fantastic. The Keys and El Goodo. Then there’s Cate Le Bon, Sweet Baboo, H. Hawkline is coming through. There’s the whole axis of the Super Furries and Gruff Rhys’ new LP. Richard James too. And that’s just Cardiff. Then there’s Y Niwl and Yr Ods which is really good Welsh language music, and that’s needed. Too often it can sound over-Americanised, or chicken in the basket country-folk. I just think people should try and do something new with it. When I write in Welsh I don’t use English as a reference point, I listen to Francoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg or Brazilian music and that’s my major input there. HOW IS THE NEXT LP COMING ALONG? We’re already half-way through writing it and we’ve started recording it. It’ll be out next Autumn and it will be different again. Magic Lantern Show and Box are fairly thematically similar and interlinked both in sound and subject matter. The next one is drawing from a different well of experience. It’s going for more Balearic house beats, the pink pound (laughs). With Box I wanted to make a psych-pop record with all the trimmings. This one will be simpler, I don’t know if it’s more confessional, but it’s more first person. As I’m developing, I’m more able to articulate my own experiences. But generally, it will be stripped down, less bells and whistles. ANY OTHER PLANS IN THE QUEST FOR SUPERSTARDOM? Our overall objective is to be able to survive on making records and nothing else. But if anything else came along I’d be happy, obviously. As long as I can keep making music and eat and be warm, then that would be fine. There’s an expression initially used in a racial context, but it’s the same for musicians, we need something to eat, a roof over our heads and a warm place to shit. And that’s all I need. We’ve also got a load of dates coming up too. myspace.com/coloramasound

Zervas & Pepper “Songs sugar-dusted with beautiful harmonies that vegetate around palpable melodic prowess, these two are the city’s own prescription antibody for the new millenium blues.” Words: Sion Trefor | Photo: Pete Hurley ell-established, much-loved duo Paul Zervas and Kathryn Pepper have unremittingly circled the semi-acoustica circuits for longer than Longstocking had braids. Still active as ever with their finely honed alt-country stylings, the two continually move from strength to strength, accumulating considerable accolades along the way. With a forthcoming debut album release bleeding on the dusty horizon, we at the MMP decided it’d be crazier than baked Alaska not to acknowledge the undoubtedly deserved successes of Zervas And Pepper. Perhaps not the most joyful of years, 2006 saw the untimely demise of Steve Irwin, devastating workforce protests in France and the United Kingdom; and someone thought it was a good idea to release Fast And The Furious III : Tokyo Drift. Quite wonderfully, it was this same, almost Vin Diesel-less year that saw the formation of Zervas And Pepper, based on mutual appreciation for one another’s clear musical aptitudes. ist narratives. More often than not it feels like an outfit that can’t wait to burst out of drizzly British shackles onto a sunny Santa Monica Pier, circa 1971.

Performing on stages as far afield as Santa Cruz to just outside the MMP office, Z&P have unquestionably earned their stripes and bespangled stars. BBC Radio Wales shower the duo with affectionate support and their previous releases have amassed substantial critical acclaim. Live, the outfit fluctuates between a pleasantly linear doublet to a fully-fledged sixpiece, including the legends and likes of Pete Hurley, Tim Robinson, Dave Sivell and Lee Goodall. The latter, incidentally, being the respected producer behind Z&P’s upcoming debut. Expect pooled influence from the likes of Buffalo Springfield and Creedence Clearwater Revival, fused with the Deep South innocence of Nanci Griffith or West Coast sensibilities of Bonnie Raitt. Zervas And Pepper sustain a gentle balance of perfectly discernible influences with dreamy (if mildly melancholic) escap-

Fortunately, they haven’t fled the Isles yet. And there’s a good case for them to stay. Firstly, each and every song is a 3 minute Summer holiday. Secondly, easy as it might be to perceive and dissect the band’s influences, listening to their music is also a pathway to that era of exceptional songraft and harmonic mastery. Sustaining and securing this legacy with flying colours, we present to you, Zervas and Pepper. myspace.com/paulzervas

Afrocluster.. ... have established themselves as an undisputed force for extracting dance from the masses, but now their recordings are ripping needles off the wheels and exacting themselves upon your sub-woofers like a barrage of mad professors thirsty for a beat. It’s mid-afternoon on a mild November day. fibres into seizure and tuned our inner dial to funky. But even this came as no surprise to anyone in attendance at their by-nowlegendary Watusi festival slot last summer. Those who bore witness collectively testify to the juggernaut that walloped them with shaolin-like rhythmic precision.

Tumi Williams is rapidly becoming an institution among our underground, the enigmatic front man and starving artist is adored in isolation as Skunkadelic and equally revered as a part of the N.E.O.N. revolution. But now its time to direct your ears toward Afro Cluster – a six piece covert operation designed to lacerate your cerebellum resulting in unsettling and indeed upsetting lower body movements. At least this is what MMP gathered from that November night as the band seduced our fast twitch muscle

You see, since their formation Afro Cluster have established themselves as an undisputed force for extracting dance from the masses, but now their recordings are ripping needles off the wheels and exacting themselves upon your sub-woofers like a barrage of mad professors thirsty for a beat. Three demo tracks appeared in January, the secret officially out, and now it’s time for you to discover what everybody’s been talking about. positivity of A Tribe Called Quest mixed with the voodoo funk of Shibusashirazu Orchestra at their most uplifting, while Shame What The Fame Brings has a nimble tap on Kool And The Gang. Don’t mistake this for pastiche – because while hip-hop was born from the breaks of James Brown, the Godfather of Soul was never as subtle as the culture he inspired, and that’s where the intrigue of Afro Cluster stems; vivacious as George Clinton with the nouse of The Roots – the band that once pleasantly terrorised Cardiff’s live scene have successfully transferred to record. soundcloud.com/afrocluster

INTERVIEW AS WELL AS PUTTING OUT RECORDS, THE SHAPE FUNCTION PARTIES HAVE BECOME ‘PROPER JOB’ EVENTS IN THE CITY’S MUSICAL CALENDAR - WHAT’S THE SECRET OF THEIR SUCCESS? We have a lot of fun and a good buzz putting on Shape Functions so maybe that comes across. We like to try and make them more than just your average gig. WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING AN INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL IN THE MIDST OF A GLOBAL ECONOMIC BITCH SAUNA? We don’t really believe in moaning about all that, there are people out there buying music and it’s an exciting time. We’re lucky to live in this country and be able to do this at all.

HOW IN THE NAME OF THE ARGONAUTS ARE YOU?

I’m very well thank you, looking forward to sinking our teeth into 2011!

With an increasingly diverse roster including the likes of Sweet Baboo, Islet, H. Hawkline and The Failed NASA Experiment, it’s fair to say Shape Records has come a long way. Initially started by brothers Mark, Lee and Johnny Thomas to release the work of their band Attack + Defend, it has expanded now to boast some of the city’s most widely respected acts and, coincidentally, those garnering ample lip-smacked acclaim from beyond our own territories. This is an achievement in itself, but that it’s been done while maintaining the DIY ethos and aesthetic that first made the label stand out, just makes it all the more special. So it was with fanfare and pomp that we shook Mr. Mark Thomas by the hand, and quizzed as to exactly how his doves cry... 012 The MMP March 2011

CONGRATULATIONS ON A TREMENDOUS YEAR IN 2010. ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR STAND OUT MOMENTS FOR YOU?

Thanks! 2010 was great as we took on more releases than ever before. A stand out moment was Greenman Festival where I played in Islet and Sweet Baboo and H Hawkline both played as well. We had a big Shape knees up all weekend!

YOUR ROSTER HAS GROWN AND EVOLVED IMPRESSIVELY OVER THE YEARS, AND TAKEN ON A WIDER RANGE OF GENRES MORE RECENTLY, ARE YOU LOOKING TO EXPAND FURTHER? OR ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR LOT FOR NOW?

We’re very happy with the stable right now, though we are in talks with a new act at the moment, which we’re quite excited about! In general we don’t go out looking for anything, we just do things that feel right at that moment in time.

SHAPE SEEMS TO BE SYNONYMOUS WITH A RETRO DIY ETHIC - IS THIS AN INTENTIONAL MOVE ON YOUR PART?

It just happened naturally. We think ‘we could do that bit’ and cut out a cost. For example, we have no distribution for our records, the bulk of our sales we send out from home when people order them. We have learnt to make achievable targets.

HOW DO YOU FIND IT BALANCING A LIFE AS A MUSICIAN WITH THE DAY-TO-DAY OF LABEL ADMINISTRATION?

It is a tricky balance as often I want to be making music when I find myself doing admin and processing orders! Funnily enough though, due to the fact I work full time as well - I tend to have more time to think and to reply to emails and things when on tour. Lee is also a major part of the day to day running of the label so he does a lot of the ‘admin’ as well.

WITH SHAPE BEING AROUND FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, HOW HAVE YOU PERCEIVED THE CITY AROUND YOU CHANGING?

There is always lot’s of things going on and coming and going. Swn has been a very welcome addition to Cardiff’s music scene, both the festival and the regular gigs. We work together with Turnstile to release Islet and they have lots of exciting things going on - the new Gruff Rhys record is fantastic!! We love Spillers, it is great to have an independent record shop / hub in the centre of town.

WHAT HAVE YOU CHAPS GOT IN STORE FOR US IN 2011?

We’re releasing ep’s by Sweet Baboo and H. Hawkline and an Islet full length. Lee is busy mixing an Attack + Defend EP as well and JT is doing a Them Squirrels record also. We have a good rule where the 3 of us can release anything we want on our own label, it’s handy! ......... Words & Interview: Simon M. Read

Live Reviews The Canadians sure are generous, a point clearly displayed in this free show comprising four of the best bands that Cape Breton Island has to offer. Of course, Cape Breton Island is sparsely populated. But if there is a lack of people, there seems Buffalo to be no lack of fiddles. 2nd February The three support acts all sported them proudly as their chosen artillery, each in turn charting varying degrees of Gaelic folk. First Boucher’s accomplished, smooth technique was driven along by an incredibly assured backing band. The Colin Grant Band then followed offering up a polished set of instrumental Celtic folk-rock barring the brief, but amusing, appearance of a mostly silent bagpipe.

Canadian Blast

With the arrival of The Beaton Sisters, the MMP was suffering from fiddle fatigue. The sisters came familiarly armed and duetted beautifully. Their versatility could not be questioned, yet come the end of their set, in spite of some folk-dancing-while-playing high jinks, this reviewer thirsted for something else. And it arrived, spectacularly, with The Tom Fun Orchestra. Mark Lanegan-esque vocals figureheaded a buoyant performance not far from countrymates Arcade Fire but with flashes of Calexico-style trumpet, shouty choruses a la The Pogues and an eclectic, but well measured, range of instrumentation. Bottom Of The River even had the temerity to flirt with Tom Waits and come good. Genuinely forceful stuff. So, while Cape Breton Island’s traditions were at the forefront of the evening, it ended up showcasing this alongside an example of how it can be thrillingly applied in entirely different contexts. Bravo. SMR ..... myspace.com/tomfunorchestra / myspace.com/thebeatonsisters myspace.com/colingrantmusic / myspace.com/gillianboucher

Being first band on is always an uphill struggle, especially for Darkrise, who had the unenviable task cheering up a crowd who had been waiting in the rain for at least half an hour. Luckily by the time Zonaria came on stage, people were a bit more Millenium Music Hall receptive. Despite it being 8th February hard to shake off that they were all dressed like sexually deviant riot police, their blend of melodic death metal was a refreshing twist on such an extreme bill.

Nile

Dew-Scented were probably the first band to instigate any real movement in the crowd, inciting a circle-pit that had bodies flailing and beers flying all around. In retrospect Dew-Scented should have probably taken higher billing than main support Melechesh, whose style of Middle-Eastern tinged Black Metal did little to excite a crowd that was either thrashed out from Dew Scented, or were saving themselves for the headliners. The moment Nile hit the stage, the whole venue erupted like a pack of rabid dogs on crack, bodies colliding like raging atoms and people falling over every 6 seconds. Aside from one incident where Nile threw their toys out the pram over sound issues, they blasted their way through the set with atomic-clock precision and relentless brutality, where even the most reserved metalheads were left banging their heads until their necks gave in. A few of the classics were missing from tonight’s set, but once Nile closed with Black Seeds Of Vengeance, the raging sing-along that ensued indicated all was forgiven. March is going to be a musical riot across the board with Kylie taking centre stage at the the CIA, and those young lads McFly larking about…hold on…what was that?... this is not a column about mainstream musical happenings? Welcome to a new column brought to you with an alternative element of rock and metal and everything else in between. I’ll be giving you a round up on the next month’s must sees and don’t misses. The local scene is brimming with talent at the moment with bands such as Straight Lines, Revoker, Tiger Please, Exit_International and Anterior making waves locally as well as nationally. Also Accident Music begin life with their new line-up this month (featuring Darran Smith, ex-Funeral For A Friend). Clwb Ifor Bach continues to host a good mix of local talent as well as some bigger names. This month’s highlights include The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (8th), Glamour Of The Kill (10th), Holy Grail & Revoker (17th), Fireworks (22nd), and Roddy Woomble of Idlewild fame (29th). To end the month and not to be missed, five piece Japanese Voyeurs (30th), fresh from their Rock Sound Exposure Tour around the UK, will bring early 90s grunge back to life with demon-like snarls and cathartic roars from iconic frontwoman Romily Alice. Other gigs offerings around Cardiff in March include Does it Offend You, Yeah? at The Globe (2nd). At MMH, catch My Ruin (12th), Ill Nino (20th), Sonata Arctica (23rd), and The Stiff Little Fingers (24th). Following the closure of Barfly Cardiff last September, mystery and various rumours have surrounded the venue’s next incarnation. Announced in early February, the venue is reopening as Bogiez rock bar and club with a healthy dose of multiple club events and live music planned, watch this space. Fuel Rock club (based at Pure night club) also continues to pull in the crowds on a fortnightly basis, keep an eye out for special events there. If all these gigs and club nights were not enough, ‘The End Of The World’ is upon us quite literally (12th), happening in 6 cities across the nation at the very same time. For more details seriously check out: theendoftheworld.co.uk – this will be a party to end all parties! Enjoy this month’s heavy riffage, keep it loud!

Releases THE HOTEL AMBUSH Condemned

The issue with this record is not that it’s a bad record, but that The Hotel Ambush adhere to a distinct formula throughout the whole record, one that runs the risk of growing stale. The implementation of two vocal styles and chronic use of breakdowns was acceptable 5 years ago when everyone was seeming to have a go at it, but 5 years on, music has evolved a lot. The lyrics are also a sorepoint, lines such as “My life is over, you killed the last piece of me” and “Let the angels tear my soul to pieces, I think I’m falling now” sound close to the words written by angst-ridden teenagers listening to Hawthorne Heights. Still, the band manage to pull off a few catchy hooks throughout, and definitely have the technical skills to do some damage, it’s just the predictability of the record often cloaks these positive aspects. DEAD RADIO Deadtime Stories EP

When a press release comes in with the phrase ‘Dead Radio were formerly known as Jizzwagon’, you would never normally be sure of what to expect. But the much more sensibly named Dead Radio are familiar to the MMP after being namedropped by Roadrunner Records’ Revoker within these very pages. So we knew to expect rock. Really granite hard rock. And we weren’t disappointed. Comparisons to Black Sabbath smack instantly with Defy, Questions and, indeed, all four tracks, boasting the same kind of distorted tomriffery and Ozzy-esque vocals. The closer Foolish Pride steps a little further out, embracing the darkly psychedelic elements of the genre. That said, the raw sludge of 70s rock has been power-washed off here and you’re left with high end punk sonics and relatively clean production. While in totality it may not be massively inventive, it is impressively rip-rockin’ and flippin’ loud nevertheless. SMR myspace.com/jizzwagon

The Lunar Cyclist Lunaria Annua

The first track on any album has the responsibility of ushering the listener through the magical door of musical enjoyment and hopefully into a new, never before realised landscape of wonder. In Job And Knock’s case it only succeeded in making the MMP want to burn the doorframe down and mark it as unsafe. This reaction proved hasty, however, as the catchy organ and rich backing vocals of The Woonsocket Weirdo kicked in. Flashes of ingenious guitar sounding as if they were played by a 16th century minstrel abounded. Tasteful flourishes of flugelhorn and other exotic instrumentation swelled happily in the speakers. Sadly, though, the loyal listener is soon met with more brilliantly produced, tastefully augmented but confusing flights of fancy. Lyrically, the songs on offer are confidently delivered but maddening pieces of work displaying the poise of a piano being dropped on a dwarf. It’s a pity as musically the majority of this album is rather amazing. RJL thelunarcyclist.bandcamp.com

SIMON KILSHAW Talkbox Reggae

FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND Welcome Home Armageddon

THE IDOL RICH Counter Attack

THE GENTLE GOOD Tethered For The Storm

Y BANDANA Y Bandana

JAM WITH ROBINA Dark Recollections

30 years of music listening did not prepare this MMP reviewer for Talkbox Reggae. That’s not to say that everything, technically, isn’t rather good. But the application of spectacular levels of vocoder to electronic, often shuffling, dancehall rhythms may have been an ill-conceived concept in the first place. When The Who Start Playing is rather chic in its electro-layers and builds tremendously in its latter stages, but suffers terribly from lyrical pastiche. The driving Reggae Fever is a highlight but mainly because the vocoder somehow sounds more sinister, a la Daft Punk, and fits its backing. Let The Beat Go On is also rather intoxicating, like a futuristic keyboard dreaming on a beach. But in spite of these odd moments, and the awareness that Kilshaw is very accomplished at pulling everything together structurally, one can’t help but feel his abilities could be directed at more worthy causes. SMR myspace.com/simonkilshaw

Counter Attack is one thing above all else – eclectic. Tallying up the styles, genres and potential touchpoints as they emerged became like ladelling an ocean of water. It all starts with the catchy synth-pop of The Last Day I’m In Town before cascading splendidly into Drunk Winter Lovesong - at once like Death Cab For Cutie and Bright Eyes. Then, suddenly, it’s like Tom Waits has found a vintage casio in Never Trust A Lawyer. It then strays into hard-rock, a tad of ska and innumerable other nuances. That it does it with such convincing lyricism and accomplished delivery is mighty impressive. And it’s also partially tied together by a lo-fi ethic which is reminiscent of early Babybird. And that’s definitely no bad thing. In other ways, though, it feels disconnected. Elstob’s switching of genres does show immense deft of craft but, collectively, it’s often as baffling as it is brilliant. Definitely worth looking at, though, as you’re bound to like something. SMR myspace.com/theidolrich

The major characteristic one can attribute to Y Bandana, and their debut LP, is that associated with the unabated joys and trials of youth. From the first guitar-synthskin-pounding of Dyna Be Di’r Son onwards, the overriding feeling is of a young band who’ve learned how to express their life experiences with unprecedented vigour and enthusiasm. Very much in keeping with their half-naked live thrill shows, the pace never truly eases off: Clywch Clywch Buwch channels The Fratellis into a glorious Welsh language critique of the under-debated cows farting / global warming issue; single Dal Dy Drwyn bemoans the smell of another with Arctic Monkeys precision; and Anturiaethau Sali Mali has more imaginative musical breaks than any band this age should be able to summon. They may exist in a realm of silly subject matter but their tunes are far too catchy to be ignored - a band to become immediately familiar with. SMR thelunarcyclist.bandcamp.com

Returning to the emphatic mix of raw heaviness and killer melodies that gave them their name, Funeral For A Friend return with studio album number five - Welcome Home Armageddon. Fans won’t be unfamiliar with the style of the disc, but it’s a fresh take on an old formula and feels like receiving an uppercut of explosive riffs and metal screams, leaving you flat out to count the impressive melodic numbers. The Bridgend quintet have nailed some awesome axe-work on this record, writing some of their heaviest licks to date on tracks like the multi-riff spectacular Aftertaste and Front Row Seats To The End Of The World. There are racy, punk rock elements in Old Hymns and Sixteen, with some rest bite given by Owls and Medicated. Welcome Home Armageddon demonstrates Funeral’s songwriting prowess and ability to evolve their sound to a multitude of new levels. There’s life in the old dogs yet! MB funeralforafriend.com

The Gentle Good follows the excellent While You Slept I Went Walking with both clear signs of development and familiar, expertly excavated, 70s folk influences. Opener Aubade offers the intricate guitarwork, hushed vocals and carefully placed strings one would associate with Nick Drake and pulls its weight in this comparison across its full five minutes. The Welsh language Colled then sees the debut of Cate Le Bon’s presence on the album, a theme that recurs throughout to quite beautiful effect. While the LP could be accused of being slightly one-paced, it really doesn’t matter when it offers such consistent quality in its gait. And even then, there are odd deviations from template as found in the piano-led Old Window Song and incredible fret mastery of the instrumental title track. But the overwhelming feeling is of soothing winterscapes, quiet but important moments and thoughtful songcraft. It’s in the name - it’s gentle and it’s very, very good. SMR myspace.com/jizzwagon

Track titles like Forbidden Wood, Spirit Of Fire and Sons Of Odin suggest leanings towards the psychedelic imagery of Tyrannosaurus Rex or Incredible String Band; a point reinforced by Prologue and its murmuring of demons and mystic songbirds. What follows is occasionally brilliant with harmonised vocals and excellently layered, almost mediaeval, folk guitar riffs. Miracle is softly entrancing with reverb and retro production values echoing Jethro Tull - a feat achieved throughout with Epic Mother’s guitar lead-in offering further evidence. Silhouettes’ bongos, Spanish guitar and sultry pace also work rather impressively together. Quite often, though, the LP can feel overwrought, as though it’s trying to convince you with vocal bluster and heavy strumming at the expense of composure - Without You being one of a number of examples. But while their reference points aren’t at all fashionable or trendy, JWR are generally good exponents of 70s prog-folk and worth a listen if that’s your bag. SMR myspace.com/jamwithrobina

Singles KING LOUIS COLLECTIVE Sunny Days

PETE LAWRIE Fell Into The River

THE METHOD We Don’t Know!

Listening to Sunny Days on a freezing and endlessly grey February Sunday felt like a bitterly ironic experience. But you can’t hold such unfortunate timing against the band themselves who offer oodles of spanking brass, funky guitar lines and candy sweet vocals. It all amounts to a very smooth three and a half minutes - like Jamiroquai ice-skating. Or something. It motors along with some encouraging musical breaks, and builds more vocal strength in towards the end. So while this reviewer’s listening context (cold and subdued living room) may have left the joy of the track feeling a little shallow, come Summer it’s not hard to imagine dancefloors getting all sweaty for it. SMR myspace.com/kinglouiscollective

Released on St. Valentine’s Day, Pete Lawrie’s latest offering is a big dollop of Motownesque manly love. With high-end production values, backing singers and an occasional string section this single feels like it has had the proverbial kitchen sink thrown at it. His management professes that he has an inner jukebox which is stuffed with great music from every decade and on this outing he seems to be harking back to a late eighties, middle of the road groove that certainly won’t frighten the horses. Airplay guaranteed but at what cost? As Lawrie sings ‘Happiness doesn’t have a schedule, your time will come around’. I’m sure it will, but perhaps not this time. BB petelawrie.com

Ahead of the forthcoming and much-anticipated debut album in April, comes this hookladen, crunch-riding bombast of a single from The Method boys. Literally dripping in reverb and swaying heavily with a drunken fury, the initial guitar and handclaps are soon met by the horniest trumpet this side of Rhyl and keys with more soul than a blackbird on ice. What follows is a showcase of unconventionally anthemic garage rock applying multiple imaginative breaks, mad backing vocals and ceaseless energy on a purely as-andwhen-appropriate basis. B-side Take Your Shot offers a more refined effort, conjuring The Coral in its melodicism, and demonstrating a depth of capability when the manic pace of the A-side calms down. Classic. OK Lego

SPENCER MCGARRY SEASON Pessimist Light

MOWBIRD Gusto! / You Are Revolting

Sirens are blaring. A trio of surf punks from Wrexham and Newport broke into the carnival and set-up camp. The MMP bought a ticket and are on their fast ride down the psychotic tunnel of craziness right now. Neither track on this 2-track EP (aka single) are for easy strolling folk, unless you’ve a pocket full of firecrackers and are prepared to use them. Distorted riffs and distant vocals roll across the speakers in an initially disorientating but utterly compelling moony at the mainstream. The clue’s in the title of the first track Gusto! - there’s plenty of it – and if you don’t believe us, ask the buzzards overhead preying on our bewildered and battered bodies. WD mowbird.bandcamp.com

If world domination starts with a ginger frontman, then get ready for an OK coup. This single offers a double dose of feel-good pop from four self-confessed buffoons who like to jump around. The A-side Lego shows the lads in breezy form imagining a relationship where ‘we could fit together like Lego’. Nice try, and not a whiff of Shelley or Keats in their poetic ramblings. The B-side Perfect World is another rambunctious track, where OK envisage love in a parallel universe and, if truth be told, there must be somewhere out there where the Cardiff crazies play to legions of adoring fans who are captivated by their honest, no-frills approach to tuneful post-punk rock. Keep bouncing, boys, and the disciples will follow. BB myspace.com/thatbandok

McGarry’s grand plans to release six albums of entirely different styles seems set to take yet another unpredictable turn. Following on from the angular indie of Episode 1 and the musical showtunes of Episode 2, this free single picks up somewhere in the mid-80s. If any other heralded Cardiff hero jumped on that bandwagon, it would be almost certainly wrong. But the deeply retro synths, simple beats and horn section are, as always, surrounded by a lyrical masterclass and collectively it all seems inversely very right and natural. At points it evokes Prince’s best peacock strut but still has room for some unexpected breaks. Very good indeed. SMR myspace.com/spencermcgarry

Inc.A

SNOW IN JUNE

BYRON BALJAK

Let all prospective Inc.A releases be just as ambitious and as exciting as this demo. This delightful troupe of strings, brass, drums and electric bass combine general traits from Eastern European music with traces of funk and drum ‘n’ bass. Littered with some very convincing performances and instrumental arrangements, Inc.A bring to mind aesthetics from the likes of Devotchka and The Warsaw Village Band, minus the same level of virtuosity. At times, some motifs feel underdeveloped, a slightly dulled spark that will no doubt be rectified with a longer, more fastidious stint in the studio. Can’t wait to hear more. ST myspace.com/incawales

As far as acoustic led balladry goes, the issue is that there’s a lot of competition. It’s so widely covered, it either needs to take some sort of different, experimental approach or be really very good to merit repeated listens. Although obviously only in demonstrative rather than final form, Snow In June’s music doesn’t consistently fulfil either. Songs demonstrate evident musical ability with pleasant finger-plucked acoustics and, on occasion, do take a slightly dark and dramatic folk-y turn but on the whole are too safe and middle of the road. Perhaps a full-length, expected Spring 2011, will provide more strength and daring. JM myspace.com/snowinjunemusic

These three songs fired through cyberspace came with the briefest of clues to Mr Baljak’s whereabouts or activities. From listening we learned he’s madly talented with an appreciation of classic psych-rock. We discovered a wall of sound incredibly familiar yet somehow fresh and inviting. Lock Him Up almost outmuscles Pink Floyd with, well, Floydiness, and So They Say is multi-textured retro-musical glory. Imagine Sgt Pepper’s era Beatles fronted by Dave Gilmour while Phil Spector twiddles the buttons. Byron is on the lookout for a drummer and a bassist and fate will decide if we ever see a live show. If/when it happens, the ghosts of mind-altered musical loons will be nodding approvingly through the reverb. RJL

Kaptin’s Column

I mentioned briefly before about the next generation of artists that Cardiff has to offer and this year it really looks as if some of them have been grabbing the game by the goolies. The triple headed Dubstep beast that is Esoterra have been churning out some fiendishly tasty stompers recently, check their Soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/esoterradubstep/) for a selection, including a remix of the Dr Who theme that could probably blast a Dalek to bits. They’ve said that if they reach 3,000 listens they’ll put it up for a Free Download too so get over there and start spreading it around. Another act I mentioned was Exotope, who I’d been accustomed to sending me rather violent Electro / Dubstep beats and so was rather surprised when his new album hit my inbox cos it’s actually a selection of soulful 2step tracks. It’s out this month on Juvenile Scum so if your on a Garage tip (whether it be ‘Future’ or not) make sure you grab a copy. Astroid Boys always get a lot of love in this column and rightly so, they’ve been tearing up shows across the UK for the past couple of months and I’ve heard many a funny story from some of them. They shall be dropping their next single ‘Welcome To The Zoo’ on Brain Juice for March 15th, it has some seriously, seriously killer remixes too believe me. They also plan to drop 2 free tracks around the same time, the quality just keeps getting better every time as well. Also with a free EP to come is Kitty Cowell, her video for the rack ‘We Keep On Partying’ (featuring MK from Flow Dem) is doing the rounds online (featuring a DJ cameo from yours truly) however this is by far the poppiest track and it certainly seems like she’s heading back to her underground roots slightly, I most definitely approve of that direction. Not to be out done by all the youngsters, though, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Monky is getting ridiculously good on the production tip and is really pushing things out there. He has a bunch of releases to come but I shall tell you more about that next month. Going out wise, you are bloody spoilt this month with the truly legendary Daedelus (March 11th @ Cardiff Arts Inst.) alongside Darkhouse Family and Mr Healan. Signature have Instra: Mental (March 31st @ Buffalo), without a doubt one of the most exciting acts to have emerged from the Drum N Bass scene for some time and Obey have Manchester bass music stalwart Indigo (March 3rd @ Undertone). Also, if it’s not too late, look out for the tickets to a massive Warehouse party run by the Backrooms lot featuring Derrick Carter + Cassy (April 23rd @ TBA). Until next time. bigLOVE, Kaptin .... 018 The MMP March 2011

Cardiff Rising Easy Cardiffians and Cardiffiettes, this is what’s up OK... Astroid Boys have dropped their first CD - Space Jam and it’s part of their growing story of success. Since they released the video for Jungle Booku, which was quite a strange-as-in-interesting mix of hip-hop and dubstep influence, they’ve been getting noticed by major artists and been doing some big shows. Benji’s talked about how the Astroid Boys vision is one step out of the grime scene where everyone just wanted to talk about who’s got beef with each other all the time. But they’ve kept one foot in and it works. Introduction To Us is the intro track and the way it flips from a piano line into dubstep sets up the method for how they hit the right musical note of today but breathe a bit of musicality in too. The production’s tearing still, Traxx has been larging up Dell for a long time who provides most of the tracks but JSP and Exotope fire off two ill bangers and they even manage to fit in a Jamie Winchester hip-hop outro that sits alongside the rest just fine. The way they keep the street sound but step out of the grime darkness is by rolling lyrics about partying and the occasional claim of being space aliens. So if you’re a bit tired of hearing teenage assassins screaming rudeboy I’ll shank your grave then come and check out this sound and see what you think. Fun grime. In other experimentations into mental music, the Stagga feat. Skamma & Joe Blow - Genik Riddim video is out now, directed by Ryan Andrews and Jon Rennie. Big tune, watch it on youtube. And I’m out like I’m claustrophobic. ........ myspace.com/ruffstylz twitter.com/ruffstylz Photo by: Dan Green

The MMP March 2011 029

Rumours Put Straight! Recently, a whole lot of wild rumours have been swarming around me like the pack of flies which constantly orbits my increasingly weary and bedraggled frame… when will the waking nightmares end? So, in the interest of keeping my spotless social image a continued shade of spotless, and on the advice of my made-up imaginary lawyer Alfred P. Doohickey - he’s a giant talking pigeon wearing a suit adorned with the confederate flag didentcha know - I feel I should use this space to put straight a few of those tall tales involving me currently circling in hushed whispers behind the bike shed , between inhaled gasps round the water cooler and yelled over the top of terriers ripping each other apart in amateur dog fight clubs. Without further ado… • Television personality Tray Peterson and myself did not not attempt to set fire to what we believed at the time to be a pack of Nazi Communists spreading 030 The MMP March 2011

their sexually charged message of conflicting ideological hatred to the masses via the medium of interpretative dance (but what later turned out to be an apparently very flammable troupe of regular, sort of sexy, dancers) whilst under the influence of medicine normally used during liver surgery. • I have never been, never will be and most certainly am not at this precise moment of time a high ranking member of alleged secret organisation “The House of The Four Dynasties of The Temple of All Knowing Lord Naxus“….I can say with conviction that I do not long for the glorious awakening of the ancient God Naxus from deep within his volcanic tomb sealed beneath the earth’s crust, to reclaim this destitute and vermin ridden excuse for a world with cleansing fire and the mighty fist of swift fist based judgment…this is defiantly not a thing I’m into…. • Judy sorry I’ve been ignoring your calls, it’s

just I know the baby’s mine…and I really, really don’t want to have to deal with it….buzz kill much. Stop calling… LOL! • A stripper named “foxy rod sucker” never existed….go ahead check the birth records…no one under that name has ever legally come into being…..sooooo how can you “kill” some one that’s never existed… huh, pretty hard if you ask me…..so leave it… • Sideways….I know I told you I blew up the house you spent your formative years in as revenge for that creepy… custard…bat…thing… you sent after me…well, I lied! It wasn’t the house you grew up in, it was a replica of the house constructed out of your childhood pets, friends and sentimental objects! Fuck you! • Me and Ted Danson are just good friends…. nothing more……though Ted, if you’re reading, please, please call me….I miss your voice.

• Yes, my blood was surgically replaced with an experimental super serum composed of beef jerky, malt liquor and “chemical X” (old bleach) in a secret government project conducted back in the late 50s. No, it didn’t grant me any special abilities other than the whole mastery of time thing…. stop asking. • I really did once punch David Cameron’s repugnant little face clean of his even more wretched head. However, due to the abnormally fast level of healing humanoid lizards are gifted with, it grew back almost instantly. • My favourite cheese is Roquefort goddamnit! Me and Alfred P.Doohicky will continue to file lawsuits against all those that say differently… including you….yeah, you…you sonofabitch. THE VIEWS OF J.M. STRANGE DO NOT REFLECT THE VIEWS OF THE MMP.
