ingle goddamn bells…Welcome good people to the warm and cosy pages of the MMP. If we could’ve made the mag smell of roasted chestnuts for you, believe us, we would have done. We weren’t even allowed to print it on reindeer hide. It’s political correctness gone mad. Anyway, Christmas time has arrived, and with it so has the chance to reflect on another busy year in Cardiff. It’s been a particularly frantic series of musical twists and turns with many excellent bands being born and venues opening and closing faster than you can say, ‘global recession’. On the subject of financial meltdown, fear not dear readers. History proves that calamitous world events carry with them the sweet ointment of excellent music. Blues was born in the harsh environment of the cotton fields, the nylon shirt delivered disco and what would rock and roll sound like without the platform of civil unrest and a prevalent distrust for authority? It’s no surprise then that this edition of the MMP is a feisty little devil. It includes another huge haul of intriguing new sounds we found just spilling out into the street and, by jove, if you’re not delighted with the free music available for download we’ll make sure you’re on Santa’s naughty list. Forever. Merry Christmas everyone. From the MMP with love xxx THE MMP

GREAT HALL 2 OPENS DOORS:NEW VENUE JOY
THE MOON! COMES TO ILLUMINATE YOUR NIGHTS It’s testament to the success of recent Womanby Street recruit, The Full Moon, that even in the face of utterly calamitous economic circumstances they are branching out further with The Moon! in December. Opening just above its sister venue initially with some trial shows and club nights, the full launch will come in January, otherwise known as the quivering lamb of musical months. Peter Phillips, Head of Programming, explained the thought process: “January’s usually pretty quiet on the live music front, with everyone recovering from Christmas and New Year. Well this January we’ve programmed live music every night of the month, at The Moon for free entry! We’re ridiculously excited to unveil the new venue, and will be releasing more and more information over the next few weeks, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled!” After seeing the statuesque likes of Ugly Duckling and Miles Hunt coming through The Full Moon’s doors, we can only hope for more of the same. And with Clwb and Dempsey’s still firing like nuclear pistons, Womanby Street suddenly looks in peachy health. www.thefullmooncardiff.com
Long have we been decrying the slow strangulation of our music venues with Millennium Music Hall, Buffalo Lounge and The Globe all having been lost or uncertain in their futures. Bucking the recent trends have been the likes of The Bunkhouse on St Mary’s and The Full Moon on Womanby Street, but the dearth of mid-size venues is a particularly notable flaw in the city’s musical essence. So, thanks to Orchard and the Cardiff University’s Student Union for taking steps to resolve this. Their Great Hall 2 project embeds itself on Park Place alongside the sister Union venues of Great Hall and Solus, offering an alternative 500-capacity space slap bang in the city centre Orchard promoter, Greg Barton, had the following words: “I’ve been working with Cardiff Uni SU since the summer to get this project off the ground, and now it’s getting established on the touring circuit with a number of gigs booked there in the coming months. Cardiff badly needs a venue of this size after the recent club closures in the city, so this will hopefully come as welcome news for Wales’ live music scene” Acts lined up include Chimaira, Your Demise and the Rocksound Tour featuring Every Time I Die and Spycatcher. Here’s to plenty more!

FUTURE OF THE LEFT POLYMERS ARE FOREVER
OTIS REDDING – THESE ARMS OF MINE
Our review elsewhere shows how enamoured we are with the new FotL release, the title track bristles with the sort of hard-boiled dark energy Lord Sauron dispenses for fun. Cardiff’s heavyweights are back and beautifully abrasive. myspace.com/futureoftheleft
Be careful when you listen to this for it has the power to reduce anyone to a crumpled heap. Are you bored of empty, banal lyrics claiming insight in the inner workings of the human soul? Good, now listen to Otis. otisredding.com
TRUCKERS OF HUSK - DEAR MALCOLM SULLIVAN I HOPE YOU’RE ALIVE
DECEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
One of the highlights of their long-awaited album Accelerated Learning, ‘Malcolm Sullivan’ uses repetitive guitar lines, Atarilike synths and steady beats to make a beautiful, mournful and euphoric song. truckersofhusk.co.uk
TJ’S SET TO GO UNDER THE HAMMER… AGAIN
ARE YOU OK? NO, WE’RE FLYING CAR COMPANY After countless years living in the shadow of the search engines, Cardiff’s indie-popspace-hoppers OK have retired their old name for the pristine new moniker of Flying Car Company. The timing could have been better for the boys, fast on the heels of a huge Big Weekend slot and several fine tour support shows. That said, anyone who has ever attempted to find information on this band for any particular reason can sympathise with the move. We at MMP expect the same levels of idiocy, the same joyous racket and the same tight live shows just with a different banner behind them. Oh, and a now-certified progression to the stars, of course. soundcloud.com/ flyingcarcompany
For the second time in a year, the legendary TJ’s in Newport is being put up for auction. The venue shut down in 2010, after 40 years of serving the ‘Port’s public with acts as heady as Echo & The Bunnymen, Green Day, Hole, Lemonheads, Mercury Rev and Wedding Present. Earlier this year, it was believed it would be transformed into a TJ’s themed restaurant until the bid fell through in November. The next auction, scheduled for 8 December, will see a new owner with, as yet, unclear intentions. Auctioneer Paul Fosh has confessed that, in all likelihood, the space will be absorbed into a residential or retail project. But even those most bereft of sympathy for music must surely feel a pang in putting the sword through such an iconic monument in South Wales’ cultural history. In this sense, the auction also marks an ideological and economic battleground, culture locking horns with retail in a David and Goliath fashion. Wouldn’t it be just lovely if, at this special time of the year, a wealthy and well-meaning benefactor, or a mobilised co-operative, would enter the bidding with a tip of the hat in the back corner of the room? It’s Christmas, for Christ’s sake! Please! Or at the very least a plaque…
SATURATION ZONE PROPOSAL THREATENS FUTURE LIVE MUSIC South Wales police are calling for two new “saturation zones” in the city, to cover Greyfriars Road and Churchill Way. The purpose of saturation zones is to restrict the number of licensed premises in a bid to counter a surge in alcoholrelated violent crime. Greyfriars Road and Churchill way have been identified as burgeoning trouble spots, with almost five times as many reported incidents of violent crime this year than in 2009. The plans would prevent anyone opening a new licensed premises in these areas, which would rule out any new live music venues. Of course, one way round such an obstacle (apart from simply opening a venue in a different part of the city), would be to open a live music bar that didn’t serve alcohol. Bring me coffee or tea, as Can would have it. It would be an extraordinarily unorthodox idea, but might be an answer if further saturation zones make it nearly impossible to open a new venue. It would also have the positive consequence of opening the venue to under age music fans There are no such plans yet, and even the above proposal has not yet been put into place, but hypothetically, the issue raises some good questions. Do you go to venues for the booze or the bands? Can you imagine an alcohol-free live music night?

BOZ BURRELL – CARRY ON SCREAMING.
WRIGHTOID - ORANGE GROVES AND LEMON GROVES
RICHARD JAMES - WANNA SEE YOU DIE
It’s quite audacious to highlight a theme tune as the pinnacle of former King Crimson and Bad Company bassist Boz Burrell’s esteemed career, but with lines like; ‘carry on screaming, carry on screaming, cos’ when your screaming, I know that your dreaming of me’, it’s hard to argue.
A song at risk of being lost in the ether, found on a self-released album handed to me at Wrightoid’s first gig by the man himself. Simple, but as an example of acoustic songwriting, this is world class stuff folkwit.com/artists/wrightoid
Taken from the brilliant Seven Sleepers Den, this raucous gallop of a tune is enough to get anyone’s heart racing. Fuzzy, sliding guitars wallow in reverb, shaker and bass drum pound away whilst a vocal chorus blares in this marvellous, marvellous track myspace.com/richardjamesband

Words by: Simon M Read Photography: Rhys Llwyd
HUW MR
Mr Huw fully emerged as a solo performer circa 2006 with a markedly different aesthetic to most of his Welsh language peers. Occasionally puerile, uncompromisingly dark, lewd but intelligent, and one thing above all else. Catchy. The adoption of the pop vehicle for songs such as Gwyneb Dod, lures in the casual, often innocent, listener before putting the fear of God into them. Most recent release, 2010′s Dirty North Walians, saw Mr Huw in typically odd but brilliant form and now over a year on, the MMP thought it time to see what the bloomin’ heck he’s been up to…
MMP:HOW IN THE NAME OF JACOB ARE YOU? MH: I’m very well thank you, almost boiling violently with joy. Life is good!
MMP:YOUR SONGS ARE CONSCIOUSLY DARK YET MOULDED AROUND SWEET MELODIES – IS YOUR INTENT TO SUBVERT FROM WITHIN? MH:It’s not something I set out to do, it’s just me I suppose, and it just happens. The lyrics I used to write in my previous band were dark. But we played heavy music, plus no one actually knew who wrote which lyrics, so people might not have noticed so much. But now it’s the contradiction between the words and the music that makes the lyrics stand out more I suppose. My sense of humour is a bit twisted and dark, which helps…a bit. MMP:YOU SEEM TO CELEBRATE THE COMEDY OF THE AWKWARD MOMENT – IS THIS A PARTICULAR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SONGWRITING? MH:Yes, I suppose I do. Why not enjoy the beauty and comedy of awkwardness, we should try to enjoy everything. It makes life much more interesting. But I get inspiration from anything and everything. I see positives in negatives and vice versa. I like to see people’s faces when I sing a line, and it’s like if they’re checking if they heard me right sometimes.
DECEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
MMP:DO YOU EVER WORRY YOU’VE GONE TOO FAR WHEN WRITING A LYRIC? MH:Not so much with lyrics, I couldn’t care less if they’re offensive, or I’ve gone too far. You have to take them in the context of the song. Obviously, there is a line I won’t cross…with music I release. But I almost went too far with the title of my first album (but I changed it, didn’t want to). I won’t say what it was, but it referenced back to my youth and the way I saw things. But as an album title, it would have got me into some bother. I almost lost a couple of friends because of it. It’s because of them piping up I changed it. Then again, everyone has the option of listening or not listening to something, buying or not buying something. My next release title is going to have social services, the religious and the police at my door. MMP:YOU, MR HUW, WERE ONCE INTERVIEWED BY HUW STEPHENS AND HUW EVANS SIMULTANEOUSLY – AT ANY STAGE WAS IT DIFFICULT TO REMEMBER HUW WAS HUW? MH:Oh yes! When one Huw says ‘Huw’, both other Huws instantly think it’s him. Gave them both a lift once. Never again, absolute confusion!
MMP:YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY A PROUD WELSH SPEAKER, HOW DO YOU PERCEIVE THE HEALTH OF THE WELSH LANGUAGE SCENE CURRENTLY? MH:It’s in a weird place at the moment I think, but still healthy. There are brilliant bands around, like Sen Segur and Jen Jeniro who have something really special. But things can get a bit static in the Welsh scene. I hate thinking of it as a ‘Welsh language scene’, it’s music! There is a lot less going on then what there was maybe 3-4 years ago. Lot less people putting on gigs, because there’s a lot less people attending them? I don’t know. It happens from time to time. But it’ll soon come around again. MMP:THE USE OF WELSH IN YOUR LYRICS TENDS TO DEVIATE FROM MANY OF YOUR PEERS – DO YOU THINK OF YOURSELF AS AN OUTSIDER? MH:I suppose I do. But things like that just happen and you live with it. Why would anyone want to slip into the mould of others, or run with the pack. I might sing about similar stuff as some of my peers, but in my own way. Not the way that will guarantee me air play on Radio Cymru maybe. I see a lot of Welsh bands coming through, and they’ll just copy whatever seems to be getting attention in the Welsh language. Some bands can’t seem to think for themselves. Lost count of how many Masters In France tribute sounding bands I’ve seen this year. Masters In France are good, so leave them alone kids. MMP:YOU TOOK THE DECISION TO MAKE DIRTY NORTH WALIANS A BILINGUAL RELEASE – WHAT GUIDED YOU TOWARDS THAT CHOICE? MH:It wasn’t really a decision, just happened. I’ve written in English in the past with other bands, so it wasn’t something alien to me. It was just something I hadn’t done under the name Mr Huw. With the songs for ‘gogleddwyr budur’, singing the songs in English just came as I was writing, thinking of ideas. If it comes to me like that, then I’ll stick with it. I find that if I try and change it afterwards, it’s not the same, feels forced. MMP:ANY IDEAS ON WHAT MUSICAL DIRECTION YOU’LL BE TAKING FOLLOWING DIRTY NORTH WALIANS? MH:Dub-step death metal. No, not really! But tempting once I’ve mentioned it. Thankfully all my albums have sounded different, in writing and
in production. The stuff I’m working on now is different again. Maybe a bit more rawness. I just like seeing how ideas I’ve got in my head sound once they come out on recordings. I rarely re-do things. MMP:HOW’S THE NEW MATERIAL COMING ALONG? MH:It’s going really well, and still with a strong DIY ethic. I’m almost done with recording a new EP, my first EP. It’s a little different from the other releases, or I like to think so. It might show that there is another side to Mr Huw. It sounds a lot more organic than the last 2 albums, but I’ve recorded it in the same was as I did with Llond Lle o Hŵrs a Lladron. No cheating with software instruments, the odd sampling of drums and so on, I think it’ll have a looser, more natural feel to it. So would like to get it out by around March or April. Probably not though, these things take time and money. I really want to put it out on vinyl, with a hole slightly off centre so it plays all wonky. But we’ll see about that. MMP:WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR 2012? AND WHAT’S IN STORE FOR YOU SPECIFICALLY THIS YEAR? MH: 2012 will be a good friendly, warm year for all involved in it. I’ll release the EP and play as often as I can really. I’m planning once again to do videos for all the song on the EP, so excited about that. Also I’ve a couple of other band projects I’ve already started. So I’m really keen to get them going and playing live. I also predict an Irish Lottery win for a 50 something single lady from Gwalchmai on Anglesey. MERRY XMAS, MR HUW! AND EVERYONE!

TRUCKERS OF HUSK
If all the bands in Cardiff were children in school, Truckers of Husk would be the spotty maths geek in the corner with unusual shoes. Stalwarts of the Cardiff scene, famously formed from the ashes of West Walian weirdos Jarcrew, Truckers have plotted a course on isometric paper through the hinterlands of the mainstream flirtation with math rock to previously uncharted territory, now all their own. Truckers have just released their first full length album on Cardiff tastemakers Shape Records. “Accelerated Learning” is 11 tracks of mostly instrumental broken stained glass, and the next logical step following the release of the “Physical Education” EP and hipster-bait artifact “Awesome Tapes From Africa”, initially a cassette only release. The bands live shows seemingly always result in glowing report cards, enthusiastic story swapping of the night before a now standard response among the local faithful. Their set at Swn was especially well-received, the band arguably the highlight of the Shape stage; no mean feat given the calibre of their label mates (H Hawkline, Sweet Baboo). Of course, not much of this is news to long standing Cardiff music fans. Just like the maths geek in school, the band has earned a degree of reverence from the locals, granted their own microcosm in which to operate, appreciably independent of their contemporaries.
DECEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
They are one of those bands that manage to construct a world all their own, and whilst it’s one you can enter into at any time (the Truckers bandcamp is a good place to start), you might start to wish you had a guide. Part of the appeal of the band is the complexity of their material. Their stock in trade – difficult instrumentals – might unseat the uninitiated, but then they’ll roll out a piece of vocal pop, such as “Dear Malcolm Sullivan I Hope You’re Alive?” (one of this month’s free downloads), which, whilst still churning and complicated under the bonnet, is superficially accessible. This extra dimension elevates Truckers of Husk above the bloated corridor of other bands who know how to use scientific calculators and puts them squarely in line for a prefect badge, if only they wanted one. Accelerated Learning is out now on Shape Records, and is available from bandcamp. MH

JODIE MARIE The newest songbird to flit onto the Welsh music scene is Narberth-raised Jodie Marie. Fully embracing the seventies feel inspired by her clear and classic voice, Jodie Marie is set to become the Joan Baez, the Joni Mitchell or the Carole King of the contemporary singer-songwriter scene. Influenced in her early childhood by blues and Bonnie Raitt, Jodie Marie’s debut single Single Blank Canvas is an emotional and nostalgic number with a mellow, layered backing that highlights her distinctive voice and technique. As the sixties and seventies reemerge once again onto the alternative scene, Jodie Marie’s musical influences, and image to match, place her at the forefront of the fashionable pop world. Signed to Decca records, who have produced acts as massive as Nina Simone to the Velvet Underground, Marie is in good company and is sure to be a hit with retro-chic music fans as well as with those lovers of gentle, emotive folk tunes with a hint of soul; prettily executed and easy to listen to. This passage will be made an awful lot easier by the fact that her lyrics and music have an emotional depth and intensity of one considerably older than her mere nineteen years. The hitherto unsung (excuse the pun) daughter

of the local plumber was discovered by chance by Transgressive Management when the father of singer Toby L, on a trip to visit his Narberth roots, was urged by his landlady to check out the local girl’s unique sound. She was already a hit back home and it wasn’t long before she was in the studio working with some of the biggest names in the industry (Bernard Butler, Ed Harcourt) to record her upcoming album of single-take songs. Her sweet and soulful voice is complimented by a smooth blend of string overdubs to create a sound that hints at the blues music on which she was raised, whilst managing to retain an up-to-date pop feel. Jodie Marie’s debut album Mountain Echo is due to be released sometime in the new year and her single Single Blank Canvas can be heard at her website jodiemarie.co.uk alongside her latest release On The Road. JEN
After graduating from Cardiff University in 2006 – where she studied Journalism and managed Xpress Radio – Jen Long embarked on a trail of jobs which led to her becoming the presenter of BBC Radio 1’s Introducing in Wales show (which broadcasts Sunday nights/Monday mornings from midnight). In her ‘spare time’ she likes to watch Dexter and 30 Rock, and keeps herself very busy with a myriad of extra-curricular musical activities…
LONG MMP:YOU’VE BEEN PRESENTING BBC INTRODUCING IN WALES FOR ALMOST A YEAR NOW – HOW HAS THE EXPERIENCE BEEN? JL:It’s the best job in the world. This year has been ridiculous, but amazing. There’s nothing better than finding a small band when they’re starting out and watching them progress to a place where other people are getting excited about them. MMP:DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ACTS WHO’D LIKE TO BE ‘INTRODUCED’? JL: We get sent A LOT of music. Every day ten or twenty new tracks land in my inbox, and that’s just from the BBC Introducing Uploader. I listen to everything, but only have two hours a week to fill, so it’s got to be the cream of the crop. My advice would be to keep working at your music: listen to what other bands are doing, what other bands have done. Try and make music that is yours. You don’t have to spend hundreds on demos. If there’s something genuinely exciting in the song its potential will shine through. MMP:CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW MAGAZINE? I WAS PLEASANTLY STRUCK BY ITS
DECEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
SIMILARITY TO KRUGER MAGAZINE (RIP). JL:Zero Core is a new quarterly magazine made in Cardiff – and distributed in Cardiff and London – by myself, Adam Chard and Marc Thomas. You’re right; it’s definitely in the Kruger vein. Kruger had a massive impact on my life and I owe a lot to Mike (Williams), Joe (Howden) and Mike (Day) for giving me a chance to get involved with it. There are a lot of great free papers like Loud & Quiet, Stool Pigeon, and local mags like MMP, but there wasn’t anything that filled the gap Kruger left in my heart. We want to make a magazine that’s about the music we love, and involves the people who contribute to every corner of that. We want it to be well written and insightful and pretty enough that you want to keep it forever. I’m happy with Issue 1, and hopefully we can build from here. MMP: ALONGSIDE ZERO CORE AND YOUR BBC JOB, YOU ALSO RUN YOUR OWN LABEL (KISSABILITY) WHICH HAS PUT OUT A CASSETTE BY DZ DEATHRAYS, PROMOTE GIGS AS FLUX=RAD AND PLAY IN YOUR OWN BAND (EFFORT). DO YOU EVER SIT DOWN WITH A CUP OF TEA AND WATCH ‘POINTLESS’ LIKE THE
REST OF US? JL: Ha. I don’t know what Pointless is. I don’t really watch much TV, but I do like watching stuff online/DVD on my own schedule. DZ Deathrays are awesome. I saw their video for The Mess Up online about 18 months ago and thought they were neat. Then when I was speaking at BIGSOUND in Brisbane last year I met their Australian label and we became friends. I also manage Cut Ribbons, an amazing new band from Llanelli. They’ll be the next release on Kissability later this month. Flux=Rad I kind of fell into. I love putting on shows and getting to know and see lots of really amazing bands. Past show highlights have been Beach House, The Jezabels and Savoir Adore. Effort is a lot of fun. I just like posing with a guitar really, but [James] Frost is an amazing guitarist and now Ben from Kutosis and Matt from Among Brothers have joined too. MMP:IS THERE ANYTHING HAPPENING IN 2012 – WITH BBC INTRODUCING OR OTHERWISE – THAT YOU’RE PARTICULARLY EXCITED ABOUT? JL: Lots of really exciting stuff happening but I’m not allowed to tell you any of it yet I’m afraid!

REVIEWS ALBUMS THE DIOGENES CLUB
The Diogenes Club For a little under the hour mark, Welsh duo the Diogenes Club bring a fusion of classic 80s synths and contemporary pop vocals. As each track strolls by an air of familiarity oozes through the oft captivating melodies. Paul Giles’ vocals are akin to a mix of Boy George entwined with a dash of Neil Tennant, while Matt Williams’ instrumental dexterity is redolent to something found on a Robyn album. Awake For The Week, in particular, encapsulates the shoulder-pumping rhythms and head-bopping beats that sit perfectly on this soothing house record. While the album can be easily enjoyed, there is little in the way of conventionbreaking or challenge to take this to the great heights of a classic 80s throwback. MA thediogenesclub.bandcamp. com
DEAD SHED JOKERS
Peyote Smile If you were to shine Peyote Smile through a big prism you would see a modern rock spectrum refracted; occasional Nick Cave-isms (The Knot) and Queens Of The Stone Age swagger, huge post-Zeppelin riffs and dramatic vocals that nod to the old Gods of NWOBHM and shiny transatlantic production all adding up to a pure headbanger’s delight. In the manner of the best work of all the aforementioned, Dead Shed Jokers constantly skirt the edge of self-parody but manage to land squarely on the side of fun rather than silliness; even when they push what may seem to be the boundaries of taste (metal/jungle fusion, anyone?) they put a smile on your face. JN soundcloud.com/dead-shedjokers
KUTOSIS
Fanatical Love Cardiff trio Kutosis have packed their debut with influences from McLusky to Joy Division but they pull off the mix with some great hooks and rock out moments. Tracks like Shadows and House Sounds DECEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
with their danceable grooves, make the album worth coming back to. Yelping rather than singing has been done to death in this area, but here it works and Ian Jones can actually sing when the need arises (Lights To Lead Us). The album showcases Kutosis’ potential well and packs a hefty punch. One minor gripe is that the production can feel a touch too stark at times, giving the record a serious edge that a warmer tone may have softened, but overall it’s a solid debut. EG kutosis.co.uk
FUTURE OF THE LEFT
Polymers Are Forever The long awaited new release from Future Of The Left sees the band package six songs as an EP, the polarising Marmite format of music releases. Listen to Polymers Are Forever and you almost become thankful it is no longer than an EP; the songs on offer are a relentless, staccato sparring match between your ears and the blunt musical sledgehammer of Cardiff’s favourite sons. That’s not to say the release lacks for variety; quite the contrary, but even the ostensibly light relief of New Adventures or the quietly sinister My Wife Is Unhappy are underscored by the band’s trademark intensity. Polymers Are Forever is a tight package of progressive Future Of The Left material, which satisfies in the wait for the next album. MH myspace.com/futureoftheleft
JOSEPH & DAVID
Rise Up The Sun Joseph & David’s second EP shows the pair both consolidating their strengths and factoring in new textures that broaden the scope of their compositions. Take opener I’m Here as an example. Initially using only David Henshaw’s malleable vocals and guitar as its foundation, it eventually incorporates accordion, piano, brass, drums and strings into a Sufjan Stevens-esque epic. Borderline is also a builder but shifts gears towards an impressively portrayed visceral, gothic anger. And the jazzy title track slumbers in sleepily with brass before opening into something much
more expansive. But it’s not just the multiple instrumental layers that impress; it’s the confidence in songwriting, the intelligent lyricism and boldness of delivery. This is wizened yet accessible folk-pop material that suggests a very bright future indeed. SMR josephanddavid.co.uk
YR ODS
Troi a Throsi Autumn has settled in, and Yr Ods’ first full-length release makes for good listening while you scrunch through the fallen leaves. The echoes of summer are still audible, but on the whole it seems like the perfect soundtrack for getting the bus home from school on a rainy October evening. Tracks like Cerdded and Dwi’m yn Angel are constructed around wonderful, wistful riffs, while the chorus of Sian is somehow both joyously catchy and longingly sad. The sound, laced with synthetic strings and jangling guitars, is at once fresh and strangely familiar; the best songs here sound like something you heard years ago. I personally also find a certain mysterious charm in not knowing what the lyrics mean, but I suppose that if your Welsh is better than mine then you can disregard that. JDE myspace.com/yrods
RIGHT HAND LEFT HAND
Power Grab Loop-addicted duo Right Hand Left Hand layer riffs and abstract guitar sounds over tight, muscular drumbeats. In a live setting this is a treat for the eyes and the ears, as they build the wall of sound from scratch and flit between instruments, all while managing to keep on top of their loop soup. On Power Grab, their debut album, one loses the excitement of seeing the tracks’ creation – and crafting this stuff in the studio is arguably easier to get right than it is live – but nonetheless it’s a math-rock treat for the ears. These 9 songs feature infectious grooves (The Capgras Delusion), Morricone-esque atmospherics (Ferdinandea) and, in The Teignmouth Electron, a dark intensity comparable to that of Mogwai. JOC righthandlefthand.bandcamp.com
COLUM REGAN
Hotel
One of the city’s busiest, hardest working individuals releases Hotel, an album of attractive sounds and intense lyrical expression, rewarding patience and commitment with plenty of wonderful growers. What, on the surface, seem like gentle acoustic numbers are rife with micro-innovations in production and instrumentation, combining to form an edgy, largely linear sound. The bass is thin and winding, the guitar jangly and percussive whilst expertly-executed drum grooves complement exotic zheng, mbira and sitar parts (Life Boat a good example and album highlight.) There are times when this linear style results in a craving for denser, rougher textures to set off Regan’s proclivity for restraint and ‘bare bones’ songcraft. But an engaging, accessible listen, often bypassing parameters in the singer-songwriter genre. ST myspace.com/columregan
LOS CAMPESINOS!
Hello Sadness Hello Sadness shows that Los Campesinos! have come a long way from their early ramshackle sound. The drums (beaten for the first time on record by Jason Campesinos!) are hearty and intricate, the guitars are tight and imaginative, and Gareth’s yelping vocals have been toned down immensely. It’s a grown-up and refined indie sound, but the lyrical and musical content has not strayed too far from their established templates – melodrama still reigns supreme, and ‘Songs About Your Girlfriend’ is as Los Campesinos! as you can get, shot through with Pavementisms and glockenspiel. Still, this record has serious depth, and if you’ve found the band too twee to stomach in the past then Hello Sadness could well turn you onto them. JOC www.loscampesinos.com
REVIEWS SINGLES FJORDS
JODIE MARIE
Listen To Me / Conversations The MMP remember fondly Don’t Tread On Spiders and their crunchy riffs. Their reincarnation as Fjords offers an altogether different prospect, but holds firm against their previous back catalogue. The septet here showcase a capability to shun expectations with marginally less riffology and numerous pleasant diversions. Listen To Me shows this working pretty well, its introduction grinding into obtuse Molko-esque vocals and interesting breaks. Conversations is instantly catching with horns and pounding drums. But then the synths, the duet and beats suddenly turn into a Human League outtake from 1983. Nevertheless, to do both that and harder rock with conviction shows balls. SMR wearefjords.co.uk
On The Road Though undoubtedly true, the plumber’s daughter struck gold narrative could have easily come straight out of an X-Factor’s strategy and planning meeting. Regardless of this, there’s no doubting Jodie Marie has one hell of a voice. This sultry ballad, when its chorus swells, offers enough room for this to be displayed without it ever becoming too showy. Backed by many anonymous vocalists, Marie’s larynx take on added strength and character. How far she will go is really dependent on how she is nurtured as a brand, but there’s hope that this will be definitely much better than Joss Stone. Hoorah. SMR jodiemarie.co.uk
HIGH CONTRAST
The First Note Is Silent Penarth’s premier dance icon demonstrates his world class status by teaming with industry heavyweights Tiesto and Underworld for this high profile collaboration. Though deviating from the pure drum ‘n’ bass one may have come to expect from Lincoln Barrett, the presence of Tiesto should have been a hint, there is little loss in the sense of euphoria literally exuding from every beat. When listening to this, the reviewer was not off his cakes grinding bones in da club. More credit to the track, then, for remaining powerfully energising when just accompanied by its incredibly cinematic video. Local boy done good. SMR myspace.com/highcontrastuk
REVIEWS DEMOS PALOMINO PARTY
Demo Lady Kudzu announces itself with a rumble of rolling drums and distant guitar fuzz, followed by a lone, rather menacing cowboy guitar line. Palomino Party won Oxjam’s ‘Battle of the Jams’ competition back in September, and having borne witness to their frantic live show it’s pretty clear why. This is their first readily available recording, and when the band do come riding out of the storm, it’s a good introduction to their sound: galloping, Spaghetti Westerninspired frenzy, not unlike that which Muse and The Last Shadow Puppets have dabbled in previously. One wonders if they can keep up this pace, but it’s a promising start. JDE youtube.com/user/palominoparty
INCONSIDERATE PARKING
Demo This new demo starts out with a kind of Billy Bragg, punk-folk feel, dedicated to “All of the chavs and the ravers”. There’s more than a hint of the Levellers’ Mark Chadwick in its populist cry, but although Inconsiderate Parking become folkier as things proceed – bringing the ukulele and melodica to the front of the mix – it’s the spirit of skiffle that really pervades all three tracks. It should all go down very nicely in the pubs and clubs, but the recorded sound currently feels a little too minimal: this may be against the spirit of the thing, but some level of percussion wouldn’t go amiss. MJP myspace.com/inconsiderateparking
HEHFU
Demo Bradley Clarke says that he makes the gorgeous sounds of Hehfu in his bedroom alone because no one will play with him. This is a source of deep sadness for me, because he is sitting on a massive pile of hazy post-punk gold which I would love to see live; beautiful, gauzy noise-pop with direct, subtle writing at it’s sleeve-worn heart. The recordings themselves are fantastic, layers and layers of guitars doing imperceptible things that make a powerful, shimmering whole underpinned by driving drums. More please. JN hehfu.bandcamp.com
SPILLERS PICK OF THE MONTH
TRUCKERS OF HUSK
Accelerated Learning Let’s start this with some clarity. Accelerated Learning, one of Cardiff’s longest awaited debut LPs, is a bona fide success. Industrial energy springs forth from opener Staynicegetradical with powerful piston drumming and layers of synth lines conjuring a futuristic factory. Then it juts into a jazz breakdown, never once losing its step nor its engagement with the listener. It’s a bold opening gambit that’s backed up consistently throughout. Awesome Tapes From Africa condenses a myriad of experimental ideas into its entirely enjoyable four and a half minutes. Person To Person remains a complex, danceable and mathematical composition. Digit simmers beautifully under many entwining instrumental layers. It’s, frankly, just brilliant. Worth the wait? A hundred times over, yes. SMR truckers-of-husk.bandcamp.com
