MUSIC NEWS WELSH MUSIC PRIZE WINNER IS...
GRUFF RHYS
BBC AXES INTRODUCING IN WALES Early reports regarding the heavy budget cuts by the BBC suggest late night regional shows will be axed and replaced by national programmes. That description includes the BBC’s “Introducing in...” series, which has long shone a light on local talent and acted as a springboard to national recognition for many acts. Fans in Scotland have already pulled out a petition in an attempt to save their own regional “Introducing in Scotland”, which was highly regarded for the flow of quality acts it had unveiled The same is true of the Welsh format of the show most recently hosted by Jen Long, but which is also falling victim to the cuts. While there is hope for a wider national showcase of unsigned, off the radar talent; opportunities for exposure will obviously be diminished. Particularly strange is the manner this has been announced, with the BBC apparently treading carefully in the wake of public response to suggested closures of Radio 6 and BBC Four. It seems that by not cutting an entire station, there’s the hope that no-one will notice the culling of a major, localised stepping stone to bigger things. The cut of BBC Introducing nationwide, though, is a rather dramatic loss indeed.
It was a fitting gesture. Gruff Rhys, long the overlord and inspiration for much of Wales’ musical output over the last ten years, has been awarded the inaugural Welsh Music Prize for his Hotel Shampoo LP. The ceremony, hosted by Adam Walton at Kuku Lounge in Park Plaza Hotel, gave a sense of glitz to the acts who earned the right to call themselves nominees with Al Lewis, Colorama, Sweet Baboo and more in attendance. In response to his victory, Rhys seemed genuinely shocked:
“I REALLY DIDN’T EXPECT TO WIN, SO I DIDN’T PREPARE ANYTHING” As well as offering due recognition to some incredibly gifted people, the Welsh Music Prize has also helped to generate another angle of buzz to the country’s releases. The fact that we personally can think of another twenty albums that could and should have been on a comprehensive and representative list shows the quality in depth we have to offer this side of the border. Keep up the good work folks! welshmusicprize.com

SINFONIA CYMRU TURN PRO In classical news, Sinfonia Cymru have become fully professional for the first time, making them the only professional chamber orchestra in Wales dedicated to supporting young musicians. Over the last 15 years, the Sinfonia have been resolutely synonymous with musical excellence and a catalyst for the development of many fine youthful starlets. Over the course of its life as an amateur orchestra it enchanted a Pan Wales audience at festivals such as the Llangollen International Music Festival, the North Wales International Music Festival, the Faenol Festival and the Vale of Glamorgan Festival. The potential to broaden this, and continue the journey onwards, following this shift to professional status offers even greater opportunities for those involved. The orchestra has performed regularly alongside an array of distinguished artists such as Bryn Terfel, Catrin Finch, Karl Jenkins, Rebecca Evans and Llŷr Williams with whom the orchestra performed a celebratory tour on 29-31 October. sinfoniacymru.co.uk

With the announcement last month of WOMEX 2013 coming to Cardiff, came the reward for plenty of hard graft from the various foundations and councils all working for our collective benefit. The likes of the Welsh Music Foundation, the Arts Council for Wales, Wales Arts International and the Welsh Assembly Government toiled impeccably to ensure that Cardiff outflanked opposition from across the UK and Europe, including Glasgow and Dublin This will be the 16th edition of the universally loved world music trade fair and showcase. Daniela Teuber, WOMEX Director of Production, explained the factors for the decision as being the ‘truly professional, highly motivated local production partners; wonderful venues matching our multifaceted needs in close proximity; and Wales’ outstanding cultural wealth, hospitality and scenic beauty’. Doesn’t it make you feel proud? The performances of Welsh talents such as 9Bach, Mabon and Calan were also said to have specifically impressed over previous years, in turn inspiring the Celtic feel of the 2013 event. The MMP have long been transfixed voyeurs to the endless venue closures and openings over the last few years with the former sadly dominating. Good news then that, we now have a positive newsbite. The Yard Bar and Kitchen on St. Mary Street will being putting on free shows every Friday evening from the 4th November onwards starting with Under The Driftwood Tree, Ruby Samba and Thoby Davis, all in one evening. Up beat bands showcasing their own, original material will be playing from 8pm until as late as 1am each week. Future shows are set to include The Seratones, Calum Ross & the Scarlets, Cakehole Presley, CF5 with Kelly Bosano, Rachel Collier and Rusty Shackle with many more planned for the New Year. There’s an emphasis on originality and accessibility with cover bands and the overly esoteric being shunned. Instead, the new venue will play host to strong & honest original local singer songwriters and their bands as well as the occasional visitor from over the border. All sounds good to these here ears.

TEAM GHOST - ‘SUR NOUS LES ÉTINCELLES DU SOLEIL’
Seldom has such an upbeat song been so absolutely undermined by it’s contrary lyrics. An anthem of disappointment and a perfect piece of melancholy from the forgotten master.
Putting 80s synths to good use is one hell of a trick to pull off, as is a track centred on a heartfelt French soliloquy. However this combination works a treat in this wonderful Team Ghost tune, taken from the excellent You Never Did Anything Wrong to Me. myspace.com/teamghostmusic
Seventeen minutes of funk induced Japanese free-jazz from an unconventional 25-piece orchestra sounds daunting, but trust me - this track careers off the rails so joyously and exudes so much energy you will wish it were double the length.

CRASH. DISCO!
Words by: Matt Pasternakiewicz

Sometimes MMP will stumble upon a track that induces some form of cosmic shake, a track so forthcoming it leaps from the stereo and sinks its sharp fangs directly into your major arteries. Something Like This is that track... It’s an 8-bit-for-the-noughties, Crystal Castles meet Justice, day-glo, Italia, chip-tune explosion that brought Crash.Disco! to our immediate attention. Bangor’s supremely talented Gruff Jones is the producer to blame. Already subject to attention from every BBC Wales radio luminary worth their salt and recipient of praise from 6 Music’s Tom Robinson, Crash.Disco! have a fanbase of high calibre DJs – and at such an early stage, this can be considered quite an achievement. With fever pitch rising to uncomfortable levels, especially with a new EP locked, loaded, reviewed and well received, its about time we caught up with this North Walian electronic prodigy for a quick chat...
NOVEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
MMP: HOW IN THE NAME OF BIGGLES ARE YOU? CD: I’m alright thank you. Please excuse me if I say anything that doesn’t actually make sense. I’m not very good when it comes to expressing myself... MMP: WITH YOUR DEBUT EP JUST AROUND THE CORNER CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH THE WRITING PROCESS. DID YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR CONCEPT? CD: The EP has been an idea for a while now. And this may sound a bit stupid but the main idea was to get the listener to think they were in a video game. As the video game progressed, the tracks would become more complicated, faster, harder, as it were. Or I may be talking absolute rubbish again... MMP: WERE YOU LISTENING TO ANY BANDS OR PRODUCERS AT THE TIME? DID ANY OF THEM HAVE AN INFLUENCE OVER THE RECORD’S SOUND? CD: I play a load of old Gameboy video games a lot, and many of those video game soundtracks have been a part of my inspiration. I love raw 8 bit sounds and I guess you can hear the elements of chiptune based songs in my own compositions.
Interviewed by Max Hicks myspace.com/racehorsesmusic
MMP: WITH THE RECORD INDUSTRY IN TRANSITION, WAS IT A PERSONAL CHOICE TO SELF-RELEASE YOUR MUSIC OR ARE YOU AFTER THE BIG CONTRACT? CD: I did get some attention off a couple of labels but none of them were what I thought was right. I was very close to signing a contract just to get it over with, but then I realised that it wouldn’t be right. It’s not that I think I can do a better job, I just didn’t think any of them would have as much commitment as I do in releasing it on my own.
played SWN festival last year and that was awesome. I got to share a stage with this electronic band called Nedry, who I’ve been a fan of for a couple of years. So that was great.
MMP: BEING A SOLE OPERATOR SEEMS LIKE A LONELY OCCUPATION, DO YOU PREFER WORKING ON YOUR OWN OR DO YOU FAVOUR COLLABORATIONS? CD: I usually write tracks very late at night, so I don’t think anyone would actually want to collaborate at three in the morning. I like remixing for other bands and artists, though, it’s nice to work with other people’s ideas and make something different out of them.
MMP: AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE IT’S RARE TO HEAR SUCH CRISP AND ACCOMPLISHED PRODUCTION, WHERE DID IT ALL START FOR YOU AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANY BUDDING PRODUCERS? CD: Well, I’ve only been producing for the last two years, so to me it’s far from accomplished. I find it amusing that people played my early tracks, as I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. But I guess having a fresh concept is good. I used to DJ in the Student’s Union in Bangor for a while until they found out I was under age. A couple of people I knew were producing at the time so I thought I might give it a go. One thing led to another, and DJs were playing tracks on their show not too long after that.
MMP: IN YOUR FLEDGLING CAREER TO DATE, WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS? CD: Getting so much support from BBC Radio DJs has been such a highlight. I
MMP: IN THE LAST YEAR CRASH. DISCO! HAVE MAINTAINED A STEADY PRESENCE ON THE LIVE CIRCUIT, DO YOU CONSIDER THE EMPHASIS AS IN THE STUDIO OR LIVE?
CD: If someone were to ask me if I was a producer or a performer, then I’d have to say producer. I love performing live, it gives me the freedom to try out different things. But making tracks in my bedroom has always been the most fun. Especially at 3am. MMP: HOW DOES YOUR LIVE SHOW DIFFER TO A CRASH.DISCO! RECORD? CD:Live shows are variably different. I use a computer program called Ableton Live, which gives me freedom to do anything I like on a live basis which essentially means I’m literally jamming from one song to the other. I’ve recently started DJing in a couple of venues in Cardiff which has been a lot of fun too. MMP:HOW DOES THE FUTURE LOOK FOR CRASH.DISCO! CD:Who knows...hopefully I’ll still be talking nonsense and I’ll be a little bit wiser in a few years

KUTOSIS When KUTOSIS release their debut album Fanatical Love on the 14th of November, those unfamiliar with the band might assume the Cardiff trio are just another bunch of Johnny-come-latelies, as is so often the case. The truth is, it has taken KUTOSIS some time to arrive at this point; from earlier years of comparatively fey four piecery through to today’s abrasive, leaner three. In other words, KUTOSIS have learned their trade and earned their spurs. With a knack for writing a memorable hook, KUTOSIS’ songs are typically uncomplicated, well-structured bursts of verse-chorus-verse fuzz. They owe an obvious debt to Cardiff legends Mclusky, and at the risk of dropping an unfashionable reference, you might also detect the taint of Nurse-era Therapy?. All told, more punch than a school disco. However, they aren’t just content with bashing out sub three minute punk songs, as their impeding album will illustrate. The band also isn’t afraid to court the concept of the mini-epic, with one or two tracks stretching to four and five minutes, all semi-sinister swing and brooding vocals. KUTOSIS plan to unveil all of this to the wider world in an inspired fashion; a host of film makers were asked to make videos for the various songs on the album, with each person taking a different track. The results are due to be released as a limited edition double CD/DVD.
NOVEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
The album launch will therefore be both an audio and visual feast, with each of the videos to be shown at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff on the 11th of November (that’s 11/11/11, for fans of numerical coincidence). Ahead of the album’s release, the band have also released a double A side single - Shadows and Skin - available right now from bandcamp, on a nameyour-price basis (yes, that means it can be had for nothing, freeloaders). Unsurprisingly, KUTOSIS have gone the extra mile with this release too, and are also offering a limited edition t-shirt and cassette set for a tenner, which is also available from bandcamp. It’s fair to say KUTOSIS have tried to do everything properly for their debut album, a process which started with the recordings. The band worked with Rory Attwell, of Test Icicles fame, and finished the album in just two weekend sessions. They’ll be taking the songs out on tour as support to Samoans in November. kutosis.bandcamp.com

LITTLE ARROW With the opportunity to ruminate on Wales’ effervescent year of releases that the inaugural Welsh Music Prize gave us, one undeniably noticeable absence from its impressive list was Little Arrow’s Music, Masks And Poems. Elegantly defined, epiphany-laden, thoughtful and instrumentally rich, it’s fair to say there were few more assured debut LPs released, not just in Wales, but in the whole God damn world! Both the LP, and Little Arrow more broadly, are beneficiaries of sensitive ears to the folk tradition, old and new. At points the female harmonies around Williams Hughes’ main vocal line conjure reminiscences of Beverley and John Martyn. At others, the melodics and pastoral imagery echo the contemporary arrangements of Bowerbirds. And throughout all of it, the songwriting feels like a more believable re-imagining of Johnny Flynn’s rustic approach to the genre. Of course, those ‘in the know’ are familiar with Hughes from his fondly remembered time in cult Cardiff indie legends Frederick Stanley Star. Nevertheless, even those ‘in the know’ had to be surprised by the rich and resonant depth both that the LP exuded, and that their live shows continue to demonstrate. Indeed, one of this year’s live musical highlights was catching a mesmerising acoustic show in the delightfully miniscule setting of Thé Pot. There, completely unplugged, unfurled the kind of sonic massage that makes your lips go all droopy. Impeccably entwined
NOVEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
guitar and uke lines, technically perfect and carefully paced percussion, splashes of accordion, harmonica and more. And before that all stood multiple vocal harmonies dispensing lyrical wisdoms that only the wild West of Wales can seemingly inspire. Credit goes both to Hughes for his expansive musical and lyrical palette, and to his bandmates – Daisy Haran, Ben Sharpe, Richard Robinson and Daniel Messore – who precisely bring it all to life. Despite their absence from the Welsh Music Prize list, on the back of their output so far, Little Arrow’s arc is aiming at the moon. A recent slobberknocking SWN show, and the promise of recently published snippets ahead of the imminent second LP, rightly give us all cause to suffer a bout of anticipatory ear shivers. New track Meadows particularly has all of the excitement of the early Devendra Banhart demos; Hughes’ vocal quivering with the beauty of a slowing moth’s wing, while the lyrical content weaves fittingly into the ember-glowing, campfire warmth of the acoustics. With a release date planned for December, that album launch may well be something utterly special indeed.
012 | INDUSTRY INTERVIEW
Alan James began his varied career during the post-punk period as Entertainments Secretary at ULU (a position later assumed by Ricky Gervais), and ever since has been closely involved with world music projects. The 90s saw him juggling a successful DJ career with his role as Head of Performances at Birmingham’s MAC, and until 2006 he was Head of Contemporary Music at Arts Council England. He set up Hold Tight – a creative production and consultancy company – in 2007, and since 2010 has been Executive Chairman of the Welsh Music Foundation, which headed Cardiff’s successful bid to host the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in 2013.
MMP:WHAT IS THE WMF, AND HOW DOES IT HELP THOSE WORKING WITHIN THE MUSIC INDUSTRIES? AJ:WMF represents a wide group of stakeholders from the Welsh music industry across recording, publishing, live promotion, management, broadcasting and much more. We are funded by the Welsh Government to represent the industry needs to them, arts councils, local authorities, creative industries and trade organisations across Wales, the UK, and internationally. Amongst the day to day activities of information sharing, advice and advocacy, WMF organises training, conferences, and networking meetings. Our partnership with Wales Arts International – Cerdd Cymru Music Wales – creates opportunities for Wales at international meetings such as SXSW, MIDEM and WOMEX. MMP: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM WOMEX IN 2013? AJ: WOMEX is an amazing conference, music trade fair and showcase rolled into one, and is the largest of its kind in the world. Thousands of delegates and hundreds of musicians spend five days doing business, debating issues, sampling the local culture and listening to great music. It’ll be based at the Welsh Millennium Centre and the Motorpoint Arena, and Cardiff has been selected over nine other European NOVEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
ALAN JAMES
cities to host the event. Each WOMEX features strong programming input from the host country so expect a high profile for Welsh artists and the Celtic diaspora. MMP: WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON ITS CURRENT MUSICAL CLIMATE IN WALES? AJ: The economic climate may be mild at the moment but that has never stopped creativity and I’m hearing a huge amount of great music being made at home and ready for a wider listenership. More and more musicians are starting out by doing it themselves and controlling their own material and copyrights; its only one approach but it means you begin from a position of strength and control. MMP: HAS THE TYPE OF SUPPORT THE WMF OFFERS CHANGED MUCH SINCE ITS INCEPTION? AJ:The music industry has shifted to the live arena so that changes priorities for organisations like ours. Also the artist has seen the studio and office at reach in the shape of a laptop, meaning production costs become less prohibitive. We can support that sole trader stuff but the remaining infrastructure of studios, labels, venues and rehearsal rooms becomes just as, if not more, important.
Words by: Joe O’Connell Photography: Tom Oldham
MMP: DOES WMF HAVE MUCH INVOLVEMENT WITH MUSIC EDUCATION PROJECTS? AJ: We were asked to be on the steering group for the Foundation Degree in Music Industry Entrepreneurship at University of Glamorgan. I think it’s important that the industry has an overview on training. Things move so fast and teaching has to be up to date. MMP: ARE THERE ANY OTHER PROJECTS THE WMF ARE CURRENTLY INVOLVED WITH THAT YOU ARE PARTICULARLY EXCITED ABOUT? AJ: We are about to re-vamp our website and look at creating a new digital network for Welsh music. We are also hoping to set up regional reps across the country to connect with what is happening nationally in the broadest sense; our stakeholders are there now but we need more interaction on the ground. We are also investigating how music and tourism can work with each other to build audiences and help nurture the home grown industry: we’ll be working with towns and cities like Cardiff to help improve the scope of live music. And, of course, we’ll be waiting to hear that next batch of great music

REVIEWS ALBUMS THE GINGER ROGERS
The Ginger Rogers EP The Ginger Rogers’ second submission to The MMP brings just as much enjoyment and promise as their first demo recording, with the added clarity in production highlighting some incredibly nuanced performances and accomplished arrangement. Six-minute opener Compared to What showcases some great work in the rhythm section (if a little repetitive at times), with the guitars and kit interlocking wonderfully. Those unison bass and guitar lines are attractive throughout, particularly in the standout Done Waiting, which also displays singer Anne Hodgson’s gutsy, soulful delivery. A 3 rather than a 4 only because it’d be great to hear even more structural and harmonic experimentation outside the funk/soul spheres; a band of this calibre is clearly capable of it! ST thegingerrogers.com
GIRL MUSCLE
Age Of Coming EP This is the debut EP from Cardiff based Girl Muscle (who you might already know as Lt Meat, a regular on the South Wales scene). It’s a scratchy, surfy-garagey-indie-rock record with the fuzz in all the right places and the right amount of slightly miserable indifference in the vocal delivery. All five tracks on the EP are lo-fi through and through and full of distorted charm with a ton of sweet and memorable moments to be had. Talk Like An American has some great hooks and memorable riffs, grabs you from the off and stays with you afterwards. And what’s arguably the stand out track, I Roll The Dice, holds a heartbreaking melody and dreamy vocals and will have you eagerly pressing repeat. EG girlmuscle.bandcamp.com
ALBATROSS ARCHIVE
Things
Things; theatrical chamber-pop that lurches like the mind of a smartarse drunkard, swinging between thoughts of the deepest love of his life and the chance of some action with the raunchy barmaid, always eloquent and passionate, totally if multiply committed. This is ambitious stuff, almost Pynchon-esque as influences are cherry picked and structures subverted in a loose, allusive kiss-off to pop music. The more full-on moments (Troubles and Sympathy particularly) make good use of chandelier-swinging arrangements of snappy drums, jazzy piano and sax, not to mention some lithe bass playing, all supporting Richard Jackson’s emotive voice. These songs are rare gems, and can only point to even more interesting things ahead. JN albatrossarchive.wordpress.com NOVEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
CRASH.DISCO!
Crash.Disco! Gruff Jones, a.k.a. Crash.Disco!, has obviously impressed us enough to have a mammoth double page spread just pages before you read this. So it should come as no surprise that this EP has gathered praise like a quickening snowball down our metaphoric office hills. Just shy of 10 minutes, Crash.Disco! piles into every conceivable gap a sonic orchestra archaeologically dated somewhere between 1987 and 1994. But it’s a lot better than that sounds. It’s no longer the cultural space of Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley or Sonic The Hedgehog. It’s where overly happy, yet strangely sinister, trenchcoat wearing anti-heroes jig uncontrollably. Chezza V glows with a joyous 8-bit hysteria, Catdisco transiently echoes the more soothing side of Daft Punk, and GTFO races like a Sega wet dream. Fantastic. SMR soundcloud.com/crashdisco
STRANGE NEWS FROM ANOTHER STAR
DEATHBYUGG Intent on tearing the Welsh scene a new one, Strange News From Another Star waste no time unleashing their brand of fun-loving garage rock. Though the nine explosive tracks on DEATHBYUGG clock in just shy of the 20-minute mark, the Cardiff based trio sure as hell make up for a shortage in length by bringing the energy of a Duracell bunny on heat, combined with an assured knowledge of what to do with it in the songwriting department. (Are you listening ladies?) From the crazed vocals present in Ballard Of John Rostron, to the riff-driven Solomon and White Man Blues, SNFAS leave no space for a dull moment here, which only bulkens their already impressive package. MISS MAUD’S FOLLY
The Painting EP As long-time admirers of Miss Maud’s Folly, having featured them over a year ago, their path to this level of maturity makes us giddy with pride. The lengthy, but never uninteresting, Masquerade opens affairs, Angie Kirby’s delivery like a less manic but equally as affecting Kate Bush. The guitar, flute and sprightly piano tinklings all combine rather joyously with carefully paced interludes. The Fool incorporates jazzy riffs from every angle, while remaining unblemishingly spacious. The title track then offers us a cheeky piano lead coming out of the silent movie era, before skipping into a gypsy tempo and back again. It’s genuinely special stuff on offer here, and a considerable step
on from their promising beginnings. SMR missmaudsfolly.com
JOHN LEWIS TRIO
The Billy Banks Sessions This album is full of, as Lewis himself sings on his cover of The Honky Tonk Song, ‘the same old song’. While these songs will bring a smile to your face, and undoubtedly seeing the band live must be one hell of a hoe down, there is little to no variation in the 15 tracks. More to the point, the only subversive thing about this album is that it’s been released on CD rather than shellac discs. Still, Lewis has got the early rock ’n’ roll/country vocal down to a tee – recalling Elvis with a great yodel-inflected performance on Lay Back & Be Cool – and the guitar work on Rollin should impress even the hardest of cynics. JOC myspace.com/johnlewismusic
BENSH
Clues The MMP first encountered Bensh about a year ago, marvelling at their sumptuous, synth-driven and intelligent pop. This, their official debut, thankfully shows this off in spades. Doubt starts by tracing the intrinsic self-questioning associated with every relationship, Benjamin Zsolt-Zombori’s continental delivery (he’s Austrian) adding an offbeat charm which remains throughout. Other highlights include the immensely entertaining How Come Nao, distilling the leftfield romanticism of Magnetic Fields into an easy-to-swallow capsule, as well as album closer Woman 77 with its spiky guitars and breezy melody. But picking highlights overlooks the depth of quality here, each song taking its turn to impress while contributing to a broader whole. Pop as it should be made; clever, catchy and ripe. SMR bensh.bandcamp.com
SNOW IN JUNE
Snow In June A mixture of Welsh, Manx, and English musicians come together to produce this mournful and atmospheric album. Excellent production and a subtle, but interesting arrangement of backing instrumentation make for smooth listening. The album is punctuated with songs like This Sickness and The Note which, with their complete stylistic change, break up songs which might otherwise blend into one-another. The voice of lead singer Rob Cross has been described as ‘velvety’ by the likes of Bethan Elfyn, and while this can be lost in the density of the mix it breaks through in the later tracks with a clarity that distinguishes the varied sounds of the band. JA snowinjune.org
REVIEWS SINGLES FRIENDS ELECTRIC
BEE POWER
Puzzle Pieces – Single With Puzzle Pieces, Friends Electric make no bones about their commercial aspirations. The most obvious sign of this is the songs impenetrably heavy mix, obviously engineered with dance floors in mind… or TopShop at least. Lyrically, the song trades off a trite concept which might actually work for a twee band, but is nowhere near cold enough to nail the sophistication and sexiness that synth-pop at it’s best embodies. The track does have the feel of a chartable song, but with a weak hook and little of interest elsewhere, we’d be talking about the lower reaches of the top 100. I suppose that’s still something. MH soundcloud.com/friendselectricmusic
Single The worrying decline of the humble British bumblebee has been well documented over the last few years, and a group of students from Bridgend College, ably assisted by pupils from Dolau Primary School, have written and recorded this song to encourage us to pay more attention to our fuzzy wuzzy friends. If ‘hip-hop’ infused with Iron Maiden-esque guitar work is your thing, then download this. If you want to do something to contribute to the National Bumblebee Conservation Trust or the Size of Wales project, then download this. The song isn’t rocket science, but it’s for a good cause, innit. JOC facebook.com/beepowersong
OK
Young Girls’ Hearts Happy, poppy and catchy are just some of the words I could use to describe Young Girls’ Hearts, the new single from OK. The instrumentals have a Cyndi Lauper/80s feel that lend an up-to-date retro kitsch-ness to the song. Hardly a boundary breaking release, but a tune that you can imagine filling up dance floors in indie clubs and student bars country wide with its jaunty melody, accented lyrics and upbeat rhythm. Complimented by a slightly more mature B Side, reminiscent of Los Campesinos! this is an enjoyable and perky little single. JA soundcloud.com/thatbandok
REVIEWS DEMOS EJECT PILOT EJECT
Demo Picking the pockets of rock music from the last three decades is an interesting game, some years carrying a black Amex and a tight roll of twenties, others with nothing but lint and the occasional button. Eject Pilot Eject strike money when they’re lifting from the harmony heavy trousers of the likes of Heart but come up slightly drier when they set the dial to ‘modern rock’, and when they strike form (Searchlights and Drive for example) they’re brimming with the swaggery tunefulness of a hundred AM radio favourites. Big escapist statements and hairspray guitars, present and correct. JN ejectpiloteject.com
HIS NAKED TORSO DEMO 01 His Naked Torso’s noise-rock antics are attracting both positive and positively horrified responses all round. With a set scheduled for this year’s SWN Festival, we can’t wait to see how this cleverly orchestrated cacophony manifests live. For the time being, there’s this four-track demo, and more dissonance than most ears can handle (Semi-Lime is a personal favourite.) The only concern would be that sheen from the wrong producer could well dilute, not distill the impact and raucous excellence of this here outfit. ST soundcloud.com/hisnakedtorsol
FLOW OF THOUGHT
Stay Stylin’ Wigga might have been a pejorative portmanteau once upon a time, but white rap has been around long enough now to be judged on it’s own merits. Flow Of Thought show good taste in recalling the reductive production of Golden Age rap, all blaxploitation film score loops and brass stabs. Rappers Smithy Blade and Festa have a delivery like an ack ack barrage, Blade in particular recalling the legendary B-Real. If there is a criticism, it’s that the track is little more than two distinct slabs of rap, but perhaps that was the point. Flow Of Thought have quite a lot to say, and you might want to listen. MH flowofthought.bandcamp.com
SPILLERS PICK OF THE MONTH
AL LEWIS
Ar Gof A Chadw Following up Welsh Music Prize nominee LP, In The Wake, Lewis reverts back to the Welsh language of previous releases such as Sawl Ffordd Allan and Dilyn Pob Cam. Together, he and band have constructed another intelligent pop record which, like fellow bilinguists Colorama, displays the romance and beauty of Cymraeg. It’s helped by the consistent strength of melodic songwriting and an often melancholic ambience that at points recalls the understated emotions of Josh Rouse. Occasionally, things err towards the overly saccharine, Dwr Yn Y Gwaed being an example. But even these moments aren’t without their charm. And when you have the sophisticated, soothing sounds of tracks like Colli’r Cyfle and Pentref Bach Tlws balancing things out, this is something altogether lovely. SMR allewismusic.co.uk

Dan Potts of Xpress Radio pops by to tell us about the student radio station with its aims set high
DAN POTTS
Xpress Radio
Xpress Radio is Cardiff University’s student radio station, and we’re hoping to make our mark on the city’s gosh-darn wonderful music scene this year. Unlike many other radio stations, Xpress Radio is not a business, we’re a service. Our primary concern isn’t about making an absurd amount or copying the playlist of radio giants. Our main concern is to offer people something different, and something fucking cool. There are a lot of bands that miss out on being played on bigger stations because they get bombarded with tracks 24/7. Speaking as a student, believe me, many of us have a LOT of time on our hands. The person who will brave the torrential rain to catch a gig on a Tuesday night, even if they have got a lecture at nine in the morning, is a student. I truly believe a lot of students know their city’s music scene inside-out, for some it’s the biggest part of their lives for the 3-5 years they reside at university. Over the course of last year, we gave over 25 bands their first ever radio play, 14 of which went on to play on stations such as BBC Radio One and BBC Radio Wales. Student radio should be used as a platform for bands and DJs alike to get their music heard. Granted, we may not be as big as other radio stations, but we do have ambition, and we are willing to push boundaries. We hosted the first ever student radio festival on October 6th at Cardiff Students Union, with performances from artists such as Little Comets, Cut Ribbons and Three Pairs Of Shoes. I think we are fortunate enough to live in a city that produces excellent music. We would love to collaborate with local music publications like The MMP and Journal of Plastik. I would like to thank the MMP for giving us at Xpress radio the opportunity to tell you what we’re all about. And I promise you, we will do our utmost to give you the best access to our city’s amazing music scene. We broadcast online at www.xpressradio.co.uk, or listen to us on your iPhone by downloading the student radio app. If you know someone who is keen to do an interview email our head of music Phil at music@xpressradio.co.uk, or Dave if you are interested in doing a session at live@xpressradio.co.uk Cheers!
