Last month saw the twin towers of Oxjam and SWN Festival - both of which bustled and burgeoned like beautiful flowers. This month Cardiff gives home to the Soundtrack International Film & Music Festival - providing many musical fireworks beyond the initial burst on Bonfire Night. And contained in these here pages this month we have a broad array of talent to tempt you in. We interview hip-hop maverick Metabeats ahead of his sophomore album, which features collaborations with Action Bronson and numerous other luminaries. More than that, the freakishly forthright folk talents of Al Lewis are investigated, and the bruising blues-rock of Bright Young People pondered and assessed. Plus, with the recent WOMEX 2012 having happened in Greece, we briefly explore what we can expect from the world music expo’s visit to our pastures next year.

Music News Red Tape For Small Venues Lifted

Musicians and small business owners breathed a sigh of relief last month, when it was announced that the government was cutting the red tape surrounding live music in bars and pubs under a 200 capacity. The Live Music Act 2012 removes the requirement for venues to be licenced for live amplified music between 08:00 and 23:00 for an audience of up to 200 people. Additionally, there are no longer location restrictions for unamplified live music and limitations on: performer numbers, genres and amplification in licensed venues are now unenforceable. The move which aims to allow small businesses to flourish, could potentially allow thousands of new live music venues to open up across Wales, creating a whole new host of opportunities for musicians to perform. Spike Griffiths of the Young Promoters Network has already witnessed the benefit of the new legislation, “Now that the red tape has been lifted, it frees us up on choosing small scale venues which aren’t governed by tight restrictions when it comes to hosting live events This can only be a good thing and encourages us to continue uncovering new venues for new acts.”

Live Music Exchange Conference

The Universities of Edinburgh and Glamorgan are teaming up this month, to bring the cream of the Welsh music industry together at the Live Music Exchange conference. Leading academics and live music experts are gathering at ATRiuM on Saturday the 10th of November to exchange ideas and concepts on how to encourage and support vibrant and sustainable live music. The day promises to be jam packed with speeches and discussions lead by promoters, musicians, local authority figures and scholars focusing on ‘Supporting Live Music in Hard Times’. With representatives from Greenman, WMF, Creative Industries Panel – Wales and Swn set to attend expect some lively debates to ensue. Welsh Music Prize Winners! After the rush of the previous evenings showcase concert at Clwb Ifor Bach, Thursday brought the awarding of the second annual Welsh Music Prize, and with it the start of the citywide Swn Festival. Twelve albums by Welsh artists were shortlisted for the award, won in it’s first year by Gruff Rhys and the excellent album Hotel Shampoo. The shortlist, which was revealed to have been whittled down from seventy albums, was voted on by a jury of Welsh music industry experts, journalists, bloggers and DJs including the new editor of the New Musical Express, Welshman Mike Williams. Compere duty for the evening was shared between local promoter and all round good guy John Rostron, and BBC Radio Wales DJ Adam Walton, both of who emphasised their unwavering commitment to Welsh music. A short video of each shortlisted artist was shown, a reminder of the great quality and wide variety of this year’s list. With the audience on tenterhooks, the winner of this year’s Welsh Music Prize was unveiled as Future of the Left, for their album The Plot Against Common Sense. The local heroes were surprised yet delighted to scoop the award, guitarist Jimmy saying ‘It’s nice to get this kind of accolade not just for being loud but also for creating something that has struck a chord’.

New Cardiff Venue. Hoorah! Westgate Street will soon have a new watering hole now that Beatbox Bars ltd has finally been granted permission to open their latest café bar. The company behind Cardiff favourites Buffalo Bar and 10 Feet Tall, plan to convert the grade II listed former Glamorgan County Council Staff Club on Cardiff’s Westgate Street into upmarket bar and eatery, Fire Island. Despite having planning permission approval for three years, disputes over opening times have delayed the project due to objections from local residents. The venue, to be accessed through Womanby Street, revised its proposed weekend closing times to 1.30 and submitted plans to minimise noise pollution to ensuring that the application was unanimously approved by the committee. Fire Island, which plan to host acoustic music sessions, will be a welcome addition to this thriving area.

This song sounds like Arcade Fire gone emo. That concept will either excite you beyond belief or make you vomit involuntarily, but either way his recent sophomore LP is fucking brilliant and deserves your attention NOW.

Metabeats Metabeats – real name Che Ahmed – is a man with his fingers in many a

hip-hop pie. He’s a major player at Associated Minds, Cardiff’s premier

purveyors of headstrong hip-hop, and his knack for creating unique, freshsounding beats has been met with all sorts of critical acclaim.. He’s a prodigious collaborator, and Sledgehammer Kisses, the albumlength lovechild that emerged from his sessions with AM colleague Mudmowth, was a particular highlight of 2011 for us lot here at The MMP. He even gets a go in the spotlight himself occasionally: his debut album, Metaphysical, proved very popular indeed, and his forthcoming second LP, the brilliantly-titled Caviar Crackles, can almost certainly be relied upon to deliver the goods once more.... THE MMP: How’s it going? MB: Things are real good! Just finished the new album, which is sounding crazy if I do say so myself. And this halloumi/falafel pitta bread is making life even better! THE MMP: How would you describe your music to newcomers? MB: Honest funk! THE MMP: How did you first get into making music? MB: Like a lot of my friends and people I’ve met along the way, I got into it from DJing. It’s almost like you need to go to the next level of creativity with the music, and the logical progression is always gonna be to start creating the music yourself. So I was DJing from ‘97 onwards, then around 2001 I started making music myself. It was pretty bad. But you’ve gotta start somewhere, I guess. THE MMP: How do you make music? What software do you use, and where do you find your sounds? MB: That varies with the times. A lot comes

from old records, or at least the ideas that start things off do. I also have some hardware like the JV-1080, the Mo’Phatt, and the DX7. Then I

this stuff for real and making a statement. I had been working a lot with Squid Ninjaz and collaborating on a bunch of projects with Hekla and Skamma, but I wanted to create my own album/project. Just before I put the album forward to [Associated Minds co-founder] Mayor, I had worked with another AM artist called Ralph Rip Shit on a track called ‘Pump This’, which kind of opened up the door for me to do more work for the label. I had finished the album before they agreed to do anything, so I had

I know people with a lot of equipment who will get blown out of the water by someone with just a laptop, a little MIDI keyboard, and straight-up talent. I much prefer a great song over something that just sounds really clean and technical. THE MMP: How did you get involved with Associated Minds? What is it about the label that drew you to them? MB: They were from around the way, and they were the guys that people wanted to get involved with because they were the only ones down here who were really doing

an album to submit straight off the bat and they liked it. Now I’m ready to drop album number two with them. I’m real excited about it! THE MMP: What music do you listen to outside of the studio? MB: I listen to whatever inspires me. The more out there the better. I like stuff that just sounds interesting and honest, and as long as it has soul sprinkled in there somewhere, I’m happy. I still listen to a lot of house music too. Not like that Europop shit you hear everywhere on the radio or that over-the-top, noisy stuff. I’m talking Kerri Chandler, Gerd, Kenny Dope. That deep, raw goodness.

THE MMP: Do you prefer working alone, or collaborating with other artists? MB: I would say I prefer working with people. It is better sometimes to have two heads in the studio; it’s not so easy to get complacent because someone is there giving you ideas, or vice versa. Things seem to materialise quicker, too. But sometimes it is necessary to work on your own. You won’t always be on the same wavelength as that other person. THE MMP: When you do collaborate with someone, do you ever have any input on the lyrics? Or are you strictly beats-only? MB: I kind of leave that to them, the artist. Usually because the whole reason for linking with them in the first place is that I already like what they do. So I think it’s better to give them the freedom initially, then if they want my input I’ll give it to them. I have been writing lyrics with a great new singer I’m working with by the name of Vanity Jay. She’s on my new album, as well

as the new single ‘Passport’. I’m enjoying doing that a lot at the moment.. THE MMP: Of the people you’ve worked with, who was your favourite? MB: Probably my latest collaboration with Action Bronson. THE MMP: Why him? MB: Simply because I heard him a while before he blew up and was a big fan before we managed to work together. And to see how big he has become now is a great feeling. Big up Bronsolino! THE MMP: And who’s your dream collaborator? MB: Too hard! It would be between two people: Dilla and Teddy Riley. THE MMP: What do you enjoy doing besides music? MB: Mostly listening to Joey Diaz podcasts and eating! Plus I’m a sucker for boxing and MMA. THE MMP: What’s your opinion of the Cardiff hip-hop scene? Does it

get as much attention as you’d like? MB: Personally I don’t think it’s as healthy as it was back in the early 2000s, and I think part of that is the new era of music which came along, like the post-dubstep sound. I think a lot of people got into those new sounds and styles, but could not adapt to them as a hip-hop artist. A lot of people did not know how to switch things up. When I say that, I don’t mean they didn’t know how to rap over dubstep/house, but they didn’t know how to progress with the times, so I think a lot of people just gave up on it. But as far as I’m concerned, I try not to dwell on or pay much attention to that. I just want to push my music everywhere, and not try and keep a scene here so much. THE MMP: What’s next for Metabeats? MB: The new album’s ready to drop real soon, as well as a new video for that single with Vanity Jay. We’re going all out with this video, wigs and all!

Bright Young People

“ one of the most exciting live bands currently plying their trade” This is all well and good - and makes for some fascinating listening - but whatever happened to the days of walking away from a gig with a T-shirt so sweat-ridden and stretched that it becomes virtually unwearable? Or a severe two-day case of tinnitus? It’s as though bands have become so focused on producing genre-defining tunes the breathless excitement of a raucous live show is often side stepped in the name of creativity. Step forward, then, Rhyl’s own Bright Young People… Hailing from what they call the “sunny North” of Wales - and taking their name from an extravagant group of aristocratic party animals in 1920s London - Bright Young People have already done an exemplary job of encouraging people to sit up and take notice. Originally taking the form of the increasingly popular guitarist /vocalist and drummer duo set-up, they’ve carved out a reputation on the music scene for their unforgivingly wild and frenetic live shows. Their recorded material draws influence from punk pioneers such as The Stooges and early Nirvana but with the odd cheeky, spidery guitar riff thrown in reminiscent of the acid-

influenced Velvet Underground et al. Recent times has seen the expansion of the group to a traditional blues-esque three piece set up with the rhythm section expanding to include bass alongside frontman Lee Dawson and drummer Casey Ingram. But, still, it’s their riotous and chaotic live shows that have really captured the imagination of the live music fraternity. Their performances have already garnered praise from esteemed corners, including Creation Records’ own Alan McGee as well as BBC’s renowned Welsh music guru Adam Walton, and it’s only a matter of time before other prominent names fall under the spell of their sweaty, sleazy brand of punk ridden blues music. A frenetic end to 2012 seems on the cards for the trio with appearances at Cardiff’s own Sŵn Festival, plus slots supporting the likes of The Virgin Marys slated. Swiftly on his way to becoming one of our finest exports, Al Lewis has the knack of writing infectiously catchy songs which have a blurred hue of recognition, as though you already knew them. This is no accident. Drawing on the gentle yet forceful techniques of the traditional singer-songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s, most notably the deep melancholia of Nick Drake and keen warble of Paul Simon, he wanders a well-trodden path of folk-pop while bulking it out with a few modern advances. Although it was his Welsh Music Prize nominated 2011 LP ‘In the Wake’ that propelled him to widespread critical acclaim, Lewis is fiercely proud of his bilingualism. Originally from Pwlheli on the coast of North Wales, Lewis first began to make his name on the scene after coming second in the Cân I Gymru (Song for Wales) contest in 2007. His first two EP’s ‘Byw Mewn Breuddwyd’ and ‘Dilyn Pob Cam’ both spent multiple weeks at number one in the Welsh language album charts and he has been awarded ‘Best Male Artist’ the last two years running at the BBC Radio Cymru Awards.

His latest release, ‘Battles’ continues in the same excellent form. Riddled with both internal and external conflicts, it is a realisation of the onslaught of age and certain truths becoming apparent. He flickers from fear and introspection at the end of his twenties to an attempt to impart some of the wisdom acquired from those years. In this respect it is a slightly more reclined piece of work than some of the sprightliness of ‘In the Wake’. The inclusion of long term collaborator Sarah Howells of Paper Aeroplanes lends extra credibility to the subject matter, as often morose lyrics are inverted by the added dimension of her soft, lingering voice. Following his first UK wide tour in October on the back of the new album, including a welcome appearance at Swn festival, Lewis has surely cemented his status as a stalwart of the Welsh folk scene. What is WOMEX? WOMEX (the World Music Expo) is a conference, trade fair and artist showcase all rolled into one, and in 2013 will be hosted by Cardiff.

World Music’: a loaded term which since the ‘80s has been used by cigarsmoking, money-counting music industry execs to classify anything which isn’t rock, pop or classical – i.e. anything non-western. While the growth of the world music industry has led to us European folk discovering a whole range of music from Asia, Africa, South America and even our own doorstep which we never knew existed, for some the term conjures images of crusty, new-age hippies swaying on the spot and praising the ‘authenticity’ of djembe-playing in comparison with our own multimedia lives. What’s worse is that some people consider world music to be a genre: I mean, really? While Metallica and Megadeth are both clearly ‘metal’, in what

way are traditional Chinese guzheng songs and Peruvian pan flute pieces similar apart from not being from Europe? Thankfully however not everyone in the world music industry treats the wide range of international traditional music with such simplicity. WOMEX (the World Music Expo) is a conference, trade fair and artist showcase all rolled into one, and in 2013 will be hosted by Cardiff. Set to be based at the Wales Millennium Centre and Motorpoint Arena, the city was chosen over 9 other European cities after a complex selection process, with a bid headed by Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales – a partnership between the Welsh Music Foundation and Wales Arts International/ Arts Council of Wales – and supported by the British Council and the Welsh Government .So just what can we expect from this exciting October weekend? This year’s event, which was held in Thessaloniki – the cultural capital of Greece – saw trade

stalls, networking opportunities, film screenings and presentations for delegates during the day, while the evenings were dedicated to concerts, national showcases and DJ summits which welcomed curious members of the public into the fold as well. It is thanks to one such showcase of Welsh talent – which featured Calan, Mabon and the legendary 9Bach – at 2011’s Copenhagen WOMEX that interest in our Celtic heritage grew amongst conference delegates. We don’t doubt that their appetite will be met by the wide range of traditional musicians we have performing in our country today. However, while promoting our own musicians is obviously of huge importance, we should also take the time to explore the music of our guests – be it that of our Celtic neighbours, the djembe players of Guinea, or the instrument or national musical style we will not have heard of until October 2013. Nos Somnia

Don’t let the short introduction track on this EP fool you - what threatens to lazily slide into a stereotypically-Welsh psychedelic offering actually evolves into an upbeat and listlessly funky affair, albeit one that retains a haunting atmospheric feel. Shades of Metronomy emanate from the reverb-laden guitar riffs and airy keyboards. This is backed up throughout by discotinged bass lines and driving yet subtle percussive licks, although the lethargically delivered vocals set this apart from their better known contemporaries. Violas adorn themselves with the moniker of perpetrating a brand of ‘shimmering, dreamy pop’ music, which is as accurate a label as anyone could bestow upon them, and this EP serves as a delicious appetiser for what promises to be an enticing main course. Spillers pick of the month Plyci

Flump EP

Described by Peski as ‘the biggest thing to come out of Rhyl since Kwik Save’, Plyci (real name Gerallt Ruggerio) has staked a claim to be spoken of as the biggest electronic artist to come out of Wales on his debut release for the label. This EP is six tracks of clashing electronic influences which should appeal to fans of acts as diverse as Daft Punk, Rustie and Three Trapped Tigers. The title track is the centrepiece in all senses: a slow, melancholic groove which layers beautiful melodies without complication. Meanwhile ‘Slut’ and ‘Meta Montage’ are proper dancefloor bangers for the thinking music fan, while closer ‘Tube’ is a dark and pounding piece of brooding modern techno. Very, very good. JOC

As a fresh alt-rock Welsh outfit, it is a shame that Manhattan Coast already feel somewhat dated. This isn’t a criticism so much as an observation. Ten years ago they could easily have been one of those bands hanging on the coattails of Lostprophets. Today, however, they slice succinctly through the saturation of bands ploughing this furrow. Screeching energy and passion abound, and moments of pure quality glimmer in tracks such as ‘Smile’ and ‘Wave Boys’, leaning closer to metal than their pop-punk predecessors. Think of a less refined but better groomed Funeral For A Friend. They eke the right kind of broody angst to mobilise the emo hordes, but with enough anthemic ambition to appeal more broadly. DG

Cheviot Hill

Out Of Nowhere

Ataraxis Vibration are a refreshing listen in a swagger-pregnant rock music scene. Their debut EP’s tracks are treated and produced with a deftness often overlooked in their contemporaries: though guitarist Adam Kowalski Healey’s heavily-laden licks are ground out with the same boozy fuzz as Slash’s, they are given space to resound and be properly heard. The barnstorming ‘Eagles’ lends him the most room, and Dave Growcott’s sympathetic drums are just intrusive enough to be interesting. Uvonji Uzele’s vocals carry well above the arrangement but crucially reveal a lot of space underneath, and tracks like opener ‘Beyond the Border’ disappointingly empty. The trio have the beginnings of a truly unique sound, it’s true, but are in need of some support to make it a reality. LH

Israel Jacques (pronounced Jakes) is one man from Bristol and Cardiff who crafts minimal but uplifting electronica which, while not mindblowing, is certainly agreeable. This self-released, pay-what-you-like four track EP possesses the ambience of one of Jacques’ selfprofessed inspirations Brian Eno, but its Jamie XXlike drumbeats, high-pitched vocal samples and unusual synth sounds place it very much within the sound du jour. Opener ‘Cucumis Metuliferus’ is a hugely Bristolian smattering of percussion, rewinds and vocal hooks, while ‘Chronic Blues’ is a curious mix of sounds: at once reminiscent of 90s dance-pop, before sounding like the music to an underwater level on a Sega Mega Drive game and rounding off with a chillwave woodblock donk. A very intriguing debut. JOC

Cheviot Hill are an Americana inspired six piece with bags of talent. On this their debut album we hear some achingly beautiful touches; ‘Home’ is a soft and well balanced opener that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Ray La Montagne record whilst ‘Fickle the Fate’ has warmth that could thaw a frost. Maxwell James’ endearing lead vocals soar through meditative title track ‘Out Of Nowhere’ and on the upbeat ‘Had Enough’ and radiant ‘Good Ole Day’ the band’s sound is reminiscent of the John Butler Trio at their best. Certain tracks feel slightly melodically undernourished and some harmonies are not as tight as they could be, but there is enough here to keep a listener more than contented. If you dig a bit of bluegrass, check this out. TB

Casson enjoys simple drifting narratives throughout his bittersweet folk-pop, sometimes funny, often melancholic. Lyrics such as “It’s not that he doesn’t love you, he’s just out of credit” hark at his contemporary romanticism, which is generally delivered subtly and effectively. The most marked feature of his music is his almost chatty singing style, which blends a honeyed voice with a range of subject matter, including a tonguein-cheek homage to Essex. Experimental by nature, he incorporates a variety of instruments, intermingling accordions and keys to distribute an ethereal quality to many of the tracks on the album. All in all an accomplished and considered body of work, coming soundly recommended.

Gwenno

Ymbelydredd EP

You might know Gwenno Saunders from polka-dotted girl-pop group The Pipettes, but with this Welsh-language solo release she’s traded lively pop songs for a dreamy, subdued electronic sound. ‘Ymbelydredd’ is the Welsh word for ‘radiation’, and while it’s hard to listen to the chiming synths of the title track without thinking of a certain group of Mercury Prize-winners, there’s a warmth here that’s mostly absent from The xx. Closing track ‘Despenser St’, which sees Saunders vying with her synthesisers for the spotlight, is a gorgeous high point, but even the most incidental moments are worth a listen. The reverb-laden ‘Astoria’, for example, is a 92-second interlude that sounds like it was recorded in an icy cathedral but still somehow makes you feel rather toasty. JDE

’Final Hour’ almost has far too much going on to be classed as a demo. In its submission it was an epic, excellently constructed video concerning a man rushing around Cardiff a la Run Lola Run. But the track itself also oozes quality with Skunkadelic’s rich, bassy rhymes rippling between sharp interjections from Louis Vines and a fine, feline vocal cut from Ruby Samba. Collectively it’s a very impressive package, although one feels the track works best alongside its visual accompaniment, seeming isolated when consumed alone. Nevertheless, there’s more than enough lyrical bite, smooth beats and smart breaks to keep even the hardest cynic interested. SMR

Treading Water

Fresh from the crossroads and with devil-tuned guitars, we find Howl. A two piece with fire in their bellies, blues in their hearts and, hopefully, souls intact. Each song is delivered with gusto, and impressively they’ve managed to retain the raw power of their live show, see ‘Love Your Loving So’ as an example. ‘Solid Ground’ is a highlight, benefiting from additional lap-steel guitar and synth lines before building to a furious crescendo. Fans of the Black Keys will find a lot to like here, and while Howl may not be exactly original, there is much to be excited about for future recordings. NM

Rough Music Demo

Rough Music are loud, shouty, hectic and full of determined intent; just as you’d expect hardcore to be. Golden Hammer offers up steaming, distorted guitars bouncing over drums that pull up only moderately short of insanity. Death Waltz carries the same noisy bite but throws in more musical breaks and variations. Lyrically, at least from what’s on offer here, it’s impossible to gauge anything other than a lot of pent up anger. Much of this is down to the restrictive production value as it is the aesthetic, one senses, but this form of punk has always been more about feel than clarity. And this feels raucously promising. Judging from the audacious title Bleed Electric seem satisfied with their fourth EP. The electro/ hip hop trio certainly come out hard on invigorating opener A New Reason. New York based, Blackwood born producer Mug5’s swaggering hook ultimately becomes a redeeming feature. The moronic air horn and auto tune effects on following track Accidental Genius, unfortunately, typify the standard of the rest of this release. ‘Jus’ Been Thinkin ‘Bout You (Yeah)’ is reminiscent of South Park’s parody of Kanye’s ‘808 Heartbreaks’ sound, ‘Gay Fish’. Only the unoriginal raps and cheesy chorus are meant to be taken seriously, rather than provoke as much laughter as the aforementioned spoof. Less a masterpiece, this EP is more an ill advised graffiti tag on a supermarket. AA

As a taster of his new LP ‘Battles’, Lewis provides us with this intricate, folkish slice of melancholy. With vocal accompaniment from Sarah Howells of Paper Aeroplanes, Lewis’ sound has bulked out considerably. Alongside his fine fingerpicked guitar and brushed drums, there’s an element of early 1970s country, a la Gram and Emmylou, which richly benefits the track. Lyrically, too, ‘Treading Water’ has a sense of hopeful resignation that befits the underlying sound. There’s no denying that this kind of folkpop is emerging in abundance but Lewis’ craft and expertise genuinely set him apart from the majority of his peers. SMR

Howl Griff’s third full album, ‘Fragile Diamond’ is a lot of things: folky; fun; Britpoppy; Pink Floydy; Lindisfarney - and it resonates with magical seventies psychedelic sparkle. The album is a smörgåsbord of different flavours, but still one can’t help but feel that one has heard it before. Not that this, in any way, is a bad thing. It’s like listening back to your old record collection and finding yourself instantly familiar with the tunes you thought you had forgotten. You’re not challenged, you’re comfortable. There are some excellent moments on this album such as the lovely ‘Meet My Maker’ and the Levelleresque ‘Radio Revolution’. Good album with a myriad of influences, all shimmering just slightly below the surface. JH

There is a flirtation with Monty Python-esque lunacy that is quite apparent on this single, a lo-fi two-chord acoustic driven ditty assisted by the patter of simple kitchen utensil percussion. It’s a preposterous but adorable song of lobotomised sass all about the quest for masculinity that urges you to join in by simply shaking your happy-meds bottle to their beat of spoons, whisks or whatever they’ve pulled from the kitchen cupboards. It’s easier to enjoy than to explain. This song is the perfect soundtrack for losing your mind and/or growing a moustache in eighth grade, whichever comes first. Fabulous fun. SH

Benjamin Mason Demo

It’s refreshing to come across a singer/songwriter offering that really stands out amongst its peers

and whilst its dreamy and lethargic atmosphere place it in similar company to the likes of Scott Matthews these psychedelic tracks are far less formulaic and fail to adhere to typical song structures with pleasing results. Bursting with promise, the whole EP carries with it the effortless feel of a lazy summer evening or perhaps a slow burning sunrise - great stuff.
