ello troopers, Thanks for picking up the MMP. It’s your guide to all the music you can fit in your head in any given month in Cardiff. The summer festivals may have disappeared into the ether for another year but the emergence of several cracking events dotted around is indisputable. Green Man in particular is now widely regarded as one of the best in the UK and we say bravo. For now though, we wait. The grassy fields belong to the cows again. Luckily winter time is good for rock’n’roll. Bars and venues become cosy havens of live music and we all get to look good in fancy scarves and coats. In these pages you’ll discover that the musicians have been a busy bunch of bees. We have albums galore, free music, interviews, news and extensive listings of all the city’s musical events. So let’s stoke the fires, pop some corks and get busy taking part in the grand old opera of life. It helps to find a good beat.... Good luck!

MUSIC NEWS WELSH MUSIC PRIZE : SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED
OXFAM: VINYL AND MUSIC PROMOTION
The inaugural Welsh Music Prize is set to be announced at this month’s SWN Festival causing debate, deliberation and, undoubtedly, some dissent at those cruelly left off the shortlist. Speaking of which, the 12 albums up for the title have now been announced:
Alongside Oxjam Takeover in the early part of the month, Oxfam are also hosting a vinyl and music promotion with support from BBC Radio Wales’ Bethan Elfyn throughout October. Elfyn commented: “Second hand record shops are still my first port of call in any town or village and I have picked up some brilliant 7 inch vinyl from the Oxfam store in Cardiff. If it is time to clear out the cupboards and dust down the vinyl in the attic, then do take it along to the Oxfam shop, and let these lovely slabs of music get a new lease of life, and be loved once again in different hands.” Oxfam are looking for donations from the Cardiff public to the St Mary Street store so as to make this a music market like no other, literally bursting to the seams with vinyl, CDs, badges, banners and even musical notation. Last time this raised almost five grand for worthy causes, so if your music is causing you a clutter, perhaps now is the most socially helpful time for a clearout.
Al Lewis – In The Wake [Al Lewis Music] Colorama – Box [See Monkey Do Monkey Records] Funeral For A Friend – Welcome Home Armageddon [Distiller Records] Gruff Rhys – Hotel Shampoo [Turnstile Music] Lleuwen – Tan [Gwymon] Manic Street Preachers – Postcards from a Young Man [Columbia] Stagga – The Warm Air Room [Rag and Bone] Sweet Baboo – I’m a Dancer/Songs About Sleepin’ [Shape Records] The Blackout – Hope [Cooking Vinyl] The Gentle Good – Tethered for the Storm [Gwymon] The Joy Formidable – Big Roar [Atlantic] Y Niwl – Y Niwl [Aderyn Papur]
JETS TO ZURICH
No question over the quality of that selection, 12 mightily fine albums indeed, all in with a shout. Perhaps the likes of We//Are//Animal, Little Arrow, H. Hawkline, Islet and many, many more could have valid cause to feel aggrieved, but that is the nature of any award process. Indeed, the shortlist could have been trebled and still not adequately covered the breadth of quality music Wales has produced in the last year. The MMP looks forward to seeing who the panel of judges bestow the prize upon. Good luck, one and all! welshmusicprize.com

Soundtrack Festival Hits 3rd Year
November brings us the 3rd annual Soundtrack International Film and Music Festival following its break in 2010 as the arts funding cull destabilised this, and numerous other cultural ventures. Thankfully, those barriers have been broken down and there should be plenty to celebrate this time around. Between the 16th and 20th November, Cardiff and Newport will be bustling with various key minds from the international film and music community. Previous guests have included Danny Boyle, John Cale, Super Furry Animals and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and this year promises equal depth of star talent Guillemots have already been confirmed as the headline act, playing the Coal Exchange on 18th November and more details will be announced through the festival website:
HOWLING FOR THE
FULL MOON
When Y Fuwch Goch closed earlier this year, Womanby Street was left looking rather naked in terms of its music venues. Of course, the incredible cultural centrepiece of Clwb Ifor Bach remained, but the likes of The Toucan and Goch had sadly departed for the music venue burial ground in the sky. What great news, then, that we have an independent newcomer in place so quickly after a loss. The Full Moon opens on the 1st October, opposite Clwb, promising fine music and hard liquor – two of our very favourite things. We spoke to the owners, Steve Bines and Gwyn Thomas, who sounded more enthused than a child gorged on Boost bars: “We aim to bring a few one off events to the bar that give the audience a chance to see an intimate performance by well known artists. I’m really excited by these unique performances and can’t wait to announce the first of them which include a Reading Festival headliner and a Mercury Prize winner. And if that isn’t enough, we have a policy of no door charges, so all shows will be free!!” So, there you have it – all rather exciting really. Make sure you check out and support the venue as the month progresses, and catch their website at: www.thefullmooncardiff.com
BUFFALO LOUNGE CEASES TRADING: VENUE MERRY-GO-ROUND CONTINUES UNABATED Sad news on the venue merry-go-round with regard to Buffalo Lounge ceasing trading. The cosy bar/cafe on Woodville Road was a popular haunt for many students in the Cathays area drawn in by its gentle ambience, crisp alcohol and some beautifully intimate music from quality artists. The likes of Allo Darlin’, The School and MMP’s mighty Rowan Liggett among many others have sauntered through in the last two years and it’s shock closure, announced through Twitter, will be deeply felt. We re-iterate the words of Buffalo Lounge – thanks to all who’ve been involved for your hard work and good times. All shows currently scheduled will be moved to either the Buffalo or 10 Feet Tall venues, more specific showby-show details can be found at their website: www.buffaloloungecardiff.com
MUSIC GEEK MONTHLY GOES VISUAL The Music Geek Monthly events, billed as a book club but not about books, has offered all of us overly-devoted music fans opportunity to get together for listening events and discuss new releases and classics over the course of the last year. Through the process it’s been decided that David Bowie is definitively better than Marvin Gaye – thank heavens that’s been cleared up. The organisers have now cleverly seen the opportunity to spread the forum to music films and documentaries. September saw a viewing of I Am Trying To Break Your Heart – A Film About Wilco in Gwdihw, and each month from now on will see another film up for discussion. On the list of future events we have the excellent The Devil And Daniel Johnston, Scorsese’s No Direction Home and The Last Waltz, as well as Some Kind Of Monster which looks at Metallica. aving been picked up by major label Atlantic, the band released debut album The Big Roar earlier this year, which was produced by Rich Costey (Muse, My Chemical Romance, Franz Ferdinand). They are presently breaking the LP over in the States and have been asked to support the Foo Fighters on tour this November by self-proclaimed fan Dave Grohl. The MMP caught up with Wales’ newest superstars to see how they are adjusting to it all. Words & Interview by Max Hicks
SEPTEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
MMP: What music have you each been listening to recently? JF: John Grant, Dutch Uncles, Mono, 18th Dye, Anna Calvi, Patti Smith, Fang Island and many more. MMP: Does any member of the band like to be in charge of the music selection on the tour bus? JF: It’s a free for all, fortunately none of us are cd - player dictators. We occasionally have to throw Matt out the window, there has to be SOME time limit on experimental jazz. MMP: Does anyone have any “guilty pleasures” musically? JF: Sure, we love great music, but there’s no snobbery here. Different tracks serve different purposes. Haddaway finds itself into our preshow warm up music; it makes us go a bit loopy. Men at Work has the same effect, though it has been known to make Rhydian cry.
To say The Joy Formidable’s star has risen quickly would be an understatement. From their beginnings as a North Walian threepiece formed from the ashes of Manchester band Tricky Nixon, the band have quick-stepped through the minor leagues off the back of self-releases, a re-location to London and a lot of touring.
MMP: What was it like having a pretty big producer (Rich Costey) work on the album? Did both parties share the same vision for the sound or was it more complicated? JF: We have a great relationship with Rich, a lot of respect and it was a very intuitive, productive relationship. That’s not to say we didn’t challenge each other. I’m sure we drove him nuts but that’s what happens when both parties are passionate and as a band we have a very clear idea of what we want. He’s tremendously talented & I hope we get to work with him again.
variety its hard to choose favourites, every night is different. We have so many fond memories, even the bad ones in high insight take on some nostalgic hilarity. From the freezing cold drives through Scandinavia in Winter to the boiling heat of the Mojave Desert; mountains, glaciers, lakes, we’ve seen a lot & it’s a beautiful ole world out there.
MMP: How have the band’s performances been received by American audiences at your live shows so far? JF: It’s been a great year. It’s very simple. We put everything into our live performances and everything tends to fall into place after that. There’s a real love of live music in the States & that is something we’ve been feeling at the shows, we feel very welcome.
MMP: Dave Grohl is apparently a fan and you’re going to be touring with the Foo Fighters this November. How did that come about and how excited are you all? JF: What’s heart-warming about that story is that it came about very naturally. He heard Whirring on the radio in Seattle and hummed the tune home so he could look up the band. It should always be about the music, and for someone who’s has achieved so much to still have a down to earth attitude it really strikes a chord with us. Great guys. Great band. We’re very excited.
MMP: Is there much of a difference playing one country to the next, and if so, which has been your favourite? JF: Touring throws up so much
MMP: Who was responsible for the album artwork? It looks like Rhydian’s handiwork. JF: Yes, its Rhydians artwork with
ideas jammed between us. The visuals and the music are very much entwined MMP: You’re a new band that has reached a successful level fairly quickly. What single piece of vital advice would you give to other new bands who might want to follow in your footsteps? JF: We’re not in habit of giving out advice, every band should carve and follow their own path. Stick to the path and you’ll be alright, just don’t veer into the woods. MMP: Is the music industry really screwed? JF: Not at all. Not whilst there’s great artists out there. It’s a different fight, different rules but it’s not screwed until people stop caring about new music& musical diversity. There’s still hope where that’s concerned. MMP: What’s the best pizza topping? JF: Artichoke hearts, mushrooms and roasted red peppers. www.thejoyformidable.com

TOWN Are you a fan of the mighty chorus? Are you a lover of arms-aloft guitars? Does the thunder of drums ignite a fire in your chest and set each and every nerve you have to tingling? If your answers are yeses, Town are your boys.
C
ombining the vivacious, stylish fury of mod supremos The Jam with pipettes of DNA from every generation of punk, these four Newportians are riding at the front of the ‘Britwave’ parade, and garnering plaudits at every turn. A brief scan through the list of bands they have supported gives you a fair impression of what to expect from Town musically. In 2009 they opened for The Buzzcocks when said punk legends came to Cardiff, and last month they played as tour support for Lostprophets. Between these two landmark billings, the boys have chromed-up their sound with the aid of Romesh Dodangoda, producer of choice for much of Wales’ rock royalty. While sheen seems to generally be used to compensate for a lack of conviction, Town just seem smarter and more assured under the lights of better production, as if they have exchanged TK Maxx knock-offs for Harrington originals. Recently, Town have picked up backing from Fierce Panda, who are releasing their new Teenage Sky single on the Label Fandango imprint, which operates under a thoroughly admirable, music-first philosophy, something that suits a

band who are no strangers to tireless, tireless toil. Town take pride in their defiantly proletarian work ethic, seemingly working on the old adage that you make your own luck and heeding the music industry convention that the best way to get people interested is to go out and play. They are more than content to let the music speak for itself, giving away little in interview but showcasing their love of vintage mod style in their videos. In fact, the video for Eighteen (lead single from their Original Design EP) encapsulates Town well. Playing in front of a range of classic British cars, dressed up to the nines and full of vintage passion, they nonetheless employ the stadium sized, high-definition approach that bands like (they won’t thank me for this, but bear with me) The Enemy have made so successful. Town take well-worn influences, dust them down and breathe life back into them, making what they love relevant and powerful to a generation raised far from the guns of Brixton. myspace.com/wearetown

ummer has faded. Soon we shall brace ourselves for the advent of much colder times – whispers of white blanketing hilltops, branches blooming with nuanced shades of grey, the biting and beautiful chill of brisk Cardiff mornings. With Winter Villains, the MMP may have found just the perfect soundtrack to this hibernal turn. And far from being the bad guys in all of this, they are more like heroic champions of the season, showcasing its immense, timeless wonder in a quiet, reflective aural avalanche. From conception, the stock of Winter Villains was always going to be rather high. Both its core and its rolling cameos of string players create a lip-lubricating list of local talent, comprising contributors to the likes of Lucky Delucci, The School, Evening Chorus, Hail! The Planes, The Gentle Good and Spencer McGarry Season. But its testament to the aesthetic and songwriting that, while echoes of some of these acts can be found in their burgeoning catalogue of tracks, the band’s sound stands proud and distinct from its heritage. The compositional base is one of minimalism; skeletal keyboard motifs, soft guitar lines, subtle bass and percussion. From there, occasional violins and cello add depth and resonance, benefitting from sensitive arrangements. On top of this, though, comes the Winter Villains calling card OCTOBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
– a rich network of layered vocal harmonies that circle through the mix like a swirling blizzard. The combined singing prowess of Josef Prygodzicz, Ivan Moult, Callum Duggan, Faye Gibson and William Hughes cocoon the listener, offering human warmth as a juxtaposition to the glacial instrumentation. The combined effect is like Sigur Ros arranging a shotgun marriage to the California sound. In short, it’s stunning. Winter Villains are a fledgling act. They’ve only a handful of acclaimed shows under their belt and five or so songs on their website. Nevertheless, the promise of these initial steps into the big, wide world have been met with widespread interest. They have secured a slot at this month’s SWN Festival, garnered BBC Radio Wales airtime from Adam Walton and Bethan Elfyn, been on Radio 1 via Jen Long’s BBC Introducing, received production interest from Charlie Francis and created a rabid fuss amidst media moguls such as ourselves. This excitement is built partly on the outright quality of what’s already emerged, but also partly on the promise of what we can expect going forward. With more tracks due for public scrutiny before the end of the year, for either an EP or LP, there’s plenty of bright sun anticipated this coming winter.

012 | INDUSTRY INTERVIEW Interviewed by: Jennifer Allan
Words & Interview by Simon M Read
Meic Parry, in his role as both Radio C2 researcher and Recordiau Lliwgar record label boss, is inseperable from the Welsh language music scene. With the launch of Y Record Goch freshly under his belt, featuring Dau Cefn, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Y Bwgan and San Segur, the MMP thought it time to speak with Mr. Parry and see how his floss was flailing. MMP: WHAT WERE YOUR MOTIVATIONS FOR STARTING RECORDIAU LLIWGAR? MP: I wanted to release music. Through my day job at C2 Radio Cymru lots of good music is sent in, often one track at a time via email. MP3s on email is a great way to share music easily and cheaply, but it can often get lost, forgotten about or deleted. I thought there was a need for someone to release the best music that was out there. I wanted the releases to also look good to be the full package. So together with Osian and Gruff, two of my friends, we started developing the idea of Recordiau Lliwgar. For us it’s not about money - all we want to do is cover costs and break even. It’s about the buzz and excitement of getting it out - and hopefully creating something beautiful that other people can enjoy. MMP: HOW DO YOU SEE THE LABEL DEVELOPING OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS? MP: As with Y Record Goch, we will continue to release music on double 10” coloured vinyl, keeping the same design style. Y Record Las (The Blue Record) is planned next - we’re aiming to release that in June/July 2012. We OCTOBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv
will continue to limit each release to 500 copies. I’ve really enjoyed taking the record to festivals, talking to people, selling all summer. I hope to do it for many years to come. I think one record a year should keep us busy enough! MMP: Y RECORD GOCH LOOKS GORGEOUS - CONGRATULATIONS - HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT SELECTING THE BANDS FOR THIS PARTICULAR RELEASE? MP: Thanks! Richard Chitty of Bubblewrap Collective is responsible for the design - he’s done an amazing job. Absolutely everyone who sees the record comments on how good it looks. Elfyn Lewis, who was Welsh Artist of the Year in 2010 lent us his picture for the artwork inside the gatefold. Elfyn designed the covers of many Big Leaves and Catatonia records so we were pretty chuffed when he agreed to let us use his artwork for this. The bands selected themselves really. We needed bands who we like, who were exciting and who were busy. We’re really big fans of all the bands - they’ve been great to work with. I feel here I must mention Donal Whelan who mastered the record. It was an amazing experience going over to Donal’s place and just witnessing first hand what mastering can do to a song. MMP: HOW DO YOU FEEL WELSH LANGUAGE MUSIC IS FARING GENERALLY? MP: Many say that it’s an interesting time for Welsh language music. But if we’re honest it’s always been an interesting time for Welsh language music. Radio and TV royalties have diminished considerably and this is tough on many artists who rely on these royalties. But on the other hand, people continue to compose, to express. The Welsh Music Prize nominees go
to prove this - with loads of bilingual artists being shortlisted. It’s great to see bands like Colorama, The Gentle Good and Masters In France playing regularly around Britain. MMP: WHAT’S YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN C2 RADIO CYMRU? MP: I’ve been working as a researcher on C2 Radio Cymru for the past couple of years. C2 is broadcast weeknights between 8pm and 1am and there’s a great website too. A variety of presenters spin disks including Magi Dodd, Huw Stephens, Georgia Ruth Williams, Lisa Gwilym and Huw Evans - and there are others too as well as some special programming and sessions throughout the year. Each presenter is totally different - bringing a different kind of energy to their shows. MMP: YOU ARE BASED IN CARDIFF BUT HAVE RESPONSIBILITY TO REPRESENT THE WHOLE OF WALES - IS THAT EVER A CHALLENGE? MP: Half of C2’s shows are produced in Cardiff - the other half in Bangor. Lisa Gwilym presents from Bangor and she works with a great team up there. But, as you say, we have a responsibility to represent the whole of Wales, and it’s definitely a challenge. It’s great though - we travel around Wales regularly - go to schools, colleges, festivals and gigs all over the place and try to make sure that we know what’s going on in the music scenes across Wales. MMP: WHAT ARE THE ACTS IMPLODING YOUR MUSICAL UNIVERSE RIGHT NOW? MP: I really love the Ifan Dafydd 12” No Good. Amazing. Enjoying the new H Hawkline LP, Jen Jeniro 10” Swimming Limbs is quality. Lleuwen Steffan’s album Tân is really nice too. recordiaulliwgar.com

A Comfortable Sleep
Dan & Headless Bill
An understated and sweet release from Colorama here with minimalist production ensuring that each musical element is prominent to pleasing effect. Carwyn Ellis’ musical taste and understanding shine through every track, although a sense of ‘sameness’ can underscore the album as a whole. A variety of instrumentation spices things up, although at times some instruments lose a little of their essence. The bilingual lyrics are quaint; their heart-felt and almost childlike simplicity matches the tone and overall feel of the album, leaving listeners with a slightly nostalgic aftertaste. Ellis’ voice holds the same soft-spoken, commanding tone as the likes of Lou Reed and when used in the tight harmony tracks creates a dreamy surround. Essentially a lovely album for softening the transition from summer to autumn. JA soundcloud.com/coloramasound
A Comfortable Sleep is a dangerous name to give an EP of four sedative-strength, dreamy folk songs. Paper Aeroplanes ply their trade squarely in the milieu of whisper soft vocals and plain acoustic backing. Singer Sarah Howells’ intimate, breaking vocals are both beautiful and convincing; equal to any of the always well-represented wave of female contemporary folk singers mostly heard when ordering coffee. Musically, Paper Aeroplanes influence is certainly Irish and Celtic, although they borrow a vocal line from the Psychedelic Furs during “Painkiller”; most likely a bizarre co-incidence, but amusing nonetheless. It is a shame such amusement is merely accidental; the tone throughout the EP is unrelentingly earnest, as you would expect from the genre, but a little light relief wouldn’t be a bad thing. MH paperaeroplanes.bandcamp.com
Dan & Headless Bill is inescapably leftfield both in delivery and concept comprising field recordings, often sinister casio blips, simple beats, plucked guitar and spoken word. The lo-fi element stands out strongly, particularly on Morning Star which echoes Babybird’s early recordings with its distorted vocals. More conventionally folky is Ascending Thing which has a guitar line that could have been played to King Charles I on a lute and not sounded out of place. Best though, is closer, Jaunty Mexico which breathes life back into the LP with upbeat The Coral-esque melodies. Ultimately, it’s more interesting in a cerebral fashion than it is aesthetically, with some tracks (see mini-bios Sid James and Jansch) dragging on a bit. Nevertheless, worth a listen. Y Record Goch
When I’m Down EP
Wales is a terrific breeding ground for psychedelic musical oddities, and H. Hawkline (Huw Evans to Bandit viewers) has added another gem to the principality’s crown with this, his second album. While first song proper Ballast may find you uttering “for fuck’s sake…” to yourself (it’s an irritating four bar phrase repeated for two minutes), its follower Funny Bones could sit alongside any of the Super Furries’ best: it’s simply a great, single-worthy song. The whole album is shot through with fantastic melodies, ramshackle recording and performance, mad psych-wig outs (see Big Red) and pastoral melancholy (had it a recorder solo, Surf Pound could be by Circulus). A well paced LP with great songs. You have to listen to this. JOC hhawkline.bandcamp.com
Recordiau Lliwgar specialise in producing a set of compilations highlighting the best and brightest this country has to offer. From the country / rockabilly stylings of Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog to yuppieelectro of Dau Cefn, Sen Segur’s lazy lo-fi 90s sound to Y Bwgan’s minimalist electronic meanderings. For this reviewer, the latter’s Niwl y Nefoedd is the standout track, demonstrating immense restraint and a penchant for darker atmospheres. The issue is that unless the listener has, or is willing to engage with the under-produced, underexposed recesses of Welsh language music from the late eighties/early nineties, there isn’t a lot to love here. However for Meic Parry, Y Record Goch is clearly a heartfelt keepsake of great bands and sounds from that time. ST recordiaulliwgar.com
THE VANITIES
OCEAN RED
VVOLVES started the year with their graceful self-titled EP which demonstrated searing, darkly melodic industrial electro. This, their second EP, presses on well but lacks the bite of, say, a Birds In Berlin, which remains their finest track. That’s not to imply When I’m Down isn’t a decent release. Indeed, opener Clearer has a choppy guitarline, and reverbed vocals reminiscent of Echo & The Bunnymen not far from their peak. And She is nicely overlaid to sound like The Cure somewhere in 1987, before falling into a slightly weak chorus line. The overt shoegaze direction of Where You’d Start suits them slightly better - crashing waves of synths and guitar glide over a melancholy vocal. This lacks urgency overall but kneads a few hooks into your head over time. SMR vvolves.bandcamp.com
The Vanities
Codes & Lines EP
BLAKTRIX
10 years on, Cardiff’s The Vanities release their self-titled debut LP of electro-pop. Unfortunately it’s difficult to imagine many who would enjoy this hour and a half of sugar rich, generic, 80s electro. The collection of 19 tracks, written and recorded between 2001 and 2011, document The Vanities progression, but are also somewhat stagnant. Tired house beats are used throughout with occasional Meatloaf meets Gary Barlow vocals. Standing By The Motorway offers little rest-bite but demonstrates plenty of talent, and perhaps this is the frustrating thing about The Vanities – technically the band is proficient, the production is impressive and vocally every track is spot on. But it’s lack of originality, crass use of sound-banks, lazy track compilation and tired 80s nostalgia that sadly underpin this album. MP myspace.com/the.vanities
It’s always great to witness an outfit rise from demo to fully blown release in the space of a few MMP issues. Admittedly, alarm bells ring at the prospect of yet another alternative indie-rock band on the circuit. Fortunately Ocean Red succeed in presenting cogent, well-conceived and well-produced material, rife with musical intrigue and depth. This is no mean feat, particularly in light of the predominant linear textures and harmonies, but with the added punch in drum production (fast becoming a trademark of producer Todd Campbell) and substantial flair in songcraft, Ocean Red are well on their way to bypassing the alternative / indie doldrums in favour of something much more exciting. ST myspace.com/oceanredband
Some People Never Go Crazy Clocking just over 20 minutes, Some People Never Go Crazy is a hasty affair. Blaktrix could have extended the intro track four times over before boredom sets in; Rhodes keys and crisp brass provide a liquid trip-hop vanguard into first single No Drama feat. Ralph Rip Shit; a veritable cavalcade of footballing metaphor and smooth Raekwon-esque vocals. UK garage meets R&B Office Job raises the tempo and makes entertainingly critiques the soulless 9 to 5. But whilst it is rare to criticise an album for being too varied, the insistence here on merging lines of R&B, grime, UK garage and hip-hop doesn’t always pay off. Blaktrix’s piano led, R&B ballad, title track feels out of place while Between The Lines’ flow is relatively uninspired. Still, listen to Sour Grapes for raw percussive menace with promise. Work
Merthyr Tydfil’s Man Of The Hour offer by the numbers pop punk with a twist; the twist being that the song doesn’t want to end. Picking up after nearly three minutes of de rigueur repetition and a lengthy guitar solo, comes a slow building bolted-on climax, all synth pads, orchestration and piano. As an exercise in rolling out something more grandiose than what you might expect from the genre, it works. The overall sound is unapologetically aimed towards radio play, it’s commercial aspirations only slightly compromised by a somewhat thin vocal. Genre faithful fodder for people who listen to most of their music on the car radio. MH reverbnation.com/manofthehourband
For anyone with a history of playing in bands, Jets to Zurich’s new single may bring back early memories. The enthusiasm for ideas and the heavy rock genre isn’t quite realised, either due to a need for more investment in instrumental sound-sourcing or greater depth in production. This enthusiasm, however, carries the track for the most part. The middle eight in particular shows great promise and a welcomed break from the unyielding, unsavoury distortion sound permeating the rest of the track. Dale Hawkins’ vocal performance also displays substantial control over dynamics and range, but the band hasn’t quite hit the mark for this reviewer just yet. ST myspace.com/jetstozurich
We Are Animal deliver a slice of taut, jerky backwoods dance punk on Work, topped with wheezy synths and some fantastically recorded guitars that sound like orchestra hits (God I love orchestra hits, a hugely underrated blunderbuss in any musician’s armoury). This is all slathered over a base of snapping, disco seasoned drums and percussion with a thick, rich bass sound bringing it all together. As if this recipe wasn’t already groaning with goodness, just imagine what some vaguely spooksome vocals would add. Oh wait, they’ve thought of that already! Good work We Are Animal, good work. Did you ask for a polka that deals with the vague threat of authoritarianism? You did? Well then, your delivery is here, please sign, please sign, thanks, have a lovely day. Bet you never thought that the cure to our ills would come from a shirtless chap ranting at pretty much all forms of government ever, like a man trying to stone a fire to death (maybe it burned his shirt, maybe it refused to recognise the faults inherent in a trickle-down social economy or the growing inequality gap; never know with fire). Politics aside, this is really good fun. Hooray! JN myspace.com/thebleedinnoses
The Red Age aim ‘to produce interesting, melodic, and original music’, and are getting there. Their clean and jangly guitar melodies bring to mind early work by The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys, although one may find themselves wishing they’d follow the lead of their forebearers and go for the short ’n’ sweet pop song – as on opener Look Behind You – more often, rather than following the long route as they do on Battery and Good God, Great Gatsby. Nevertheless, the latter’s progression from chirpy sunny-day bopper to cloudy depression shows real songwriting ability – there’s clearly more to come from this lot. JOC soundcloud.com/theredage
Claiming that what the MMP found on Molly Zacharias’ bandcamp page is a demo is slightly erroneous. In reality, it’s more like two mini-albums bursting with plentiful, imaginative musical fruit. Zacharias has the gift of an authentically quirky yet curiously delicious vocal delivery which she complements with a range of instrumentation. This includes sweetly played guitar, horns and melodica all gelling themselves to some carefully constructed tracks. How The Bloodhounds comes across like a Welsh Alela Diane, Croaky Show benefits from deftly lyrical touches and the sum effect is not too far from the New Weird America scene. Rather great. Reviews Demos
Spillers Pick of the Month EXIT INTERNATIONAL Black Junk Manic and jagged and chunky, Cardiff trio Exit International’s tunes run somewhere between the intensely quirky and the super melodic and poppy. What is particularly impressive, though, is how they make so much noise and melody with just two bass guitars and drums, oh yes, and those vocals. It’s actually the vocals that contribute most to the density of sound on offer; dual vocal lines are common and amongst the varied singing, screaming and growling, there are extra harmonies and gang shouts going on underneath to back it all up. Black Junk is a cracking record; grooveable nastiness, ear drum shredding noise and unpredictable quirks, there’s a lot of darkness running throughout, but they manage not to let things sink into gloom via danceable hooks. Huw Stephens: Swn Festival Anyone with a pair of ears keeps their schedule free come late October. For half a decade, SWN Festival has been a stopping ground for some of the brightest talents the UK has to offer, with a pointed emphasis on providing platforms for Welsh outfits, established and new. This year the festival sees the likes of The Joy Formidable, Ugly Duckling, Race Horses, Friends Electric and Colorama entertaining audiences all over Cardiff venues between October 20-23rd. With something for everyone and everything for someone, one of the co-founders - the great Huw Stephens discusses the origins and ethos of the festival…
W
e started SWN Festival five years ago, quite simply, because we felt Cardiff needed an event like it. John Rostron and myself had been to In the City in Manchester, South by South West in Texas and I had been to Iceland Airwaves in Reykjavik. It was there I figured that Cardiff, being a fairly small and easy to get around city, would be perfect to host an event like SWN. It is a massive party that people look forward to. I’m chuffed it’s caught imaginations; it’s made the loss of money a bit less painful, but also makes all the hard work that John, Fionna, Gemma, Marc, Llinos, Helen and the countless volunteers have put into the festival over the last five years worth it. It brings the city together, and is a massive social and cultural event which benefits audiences and artists alike I hope. An event like SWN can really highlight a scene, a city, an enthusiasm which we shouldn’t take for granted. Not every artist in Cardiff or Wales or Britain or Europe or the world plays SWN, but each year we work closely with promoters and programmers to see who they’d like to play on their stages that weekend. That’s Barely Regal and Nyth, Moshi Moshi and Radar Maker, Rockfeedback and NME, Lesson No.1 and See Monkey Do Monkey, Y Selar and Steve Lamacq, to name just some of the excellent music lovers who have hand picked their line ups. This sounds like a massive advert for SWN Festival. Thanks for reading and thanks for supporting SWN Festival. www.swnfest.com
