September has rolled around quickly hasn’t it? While the month may have changed the musical output remains the same: outstanding. This month Race Horses, Man Without Country and The Blackout are the torch bearers of local talent and a fine bunch of rogues they are too.

There are many strands to the multicoloured, trans-dimensional flying carpet that is Cardiff.

Some of you will have noticed a large chunk of it has been missing and this month marks the return of our beloved student population. Welcome home you crazy young fiends. Although the return of the country’s future MPs, DJs and political refugees is great news there is much more to Cardiff than just the bright eyed and fancy free. We hope that grizzled rockers, seasoned jazz fans and everyone in between will find this pocket-sized guide extremely helpful in tracking down their preferred brand of musical bliss. It’s all going on...

Music News Welsh Music Prize : Platform for best and brightest in Wales We’re pleased to announce the details of the inaugural Welsh Music Prize which celebrates Welsh music across a wide variety of genres. The prize, an initiative of SWN Festival co-founders Huw Stephens and John Rostron, will be selected and judged by a panel of industry figures and music experts. A shortlist of 12 albums released between 1 August 2010 and 31 July 2011 will be announced very soon with the winner to be announced at SWN Festival 2011. Huw Stephens, Radio 1 DJ said: “The Welsh Music Prize is a chance to highlight incredible albums made by Welsh musicians, and bring their music to a wider attention. By inviting a panel who love, make or work with music to judge this award, it will be a chance to celebrate the wealth of recording talent that exists in Wales, and shine a light on some exciting, diverse and excellent albums.” John Rostron, SWN Festival organiser said: “We’ve long thought Wales should have a critically judged music prize which celebrates the great diversity in genre and language which comes from this country.

CIWDOD Receive Another Three Years Of Funding Community Music Wales happily announced a further three years of funding for CIWDOD. This is a partnership between CMW and The Welsh Language Board, encouraging activity in Welsh language music since 2004. Artists to have benefited from the work of these wonderful people include the likes of Radio Luxembourg, Derwyddon Dr Gonzo, Plant Duw, and Yr Ods. Following a relaunch in August, Ciwdod are now involved with Radio Cymru’s C2 School Tour taking place in over 20 schools as well as African Drumming, beatbox and songwriting workshops for grassroots Welsh language acts.

Oxjam Cardiff – The Sound of Something Happening

Two Brand Spanking New Venues in Cardiff We’re delighted to report that a gorgeous new venue has opened to the public in the heart of town.

Nestled amongst a sea of chain bars and pubs on St Mary Street, The Bunk House is a spacious, independently-owned hostel / bar / venue with a stunningly quirky interior (courtesy of Bar Manager Mikey). Owners Jason and Jess genuinely seem to want to preserve the intimate ambience and friendly atmosphere despite their high-octane dance club neighbours. Oxjam Cardiff are back planning a feast of musical fundraisers this summer in the lead up to their annual Oxjam Cardiff Takeover event, all with one aim: making music and raising money for Oxfam. On Sunday 2nd October, the Oxjam Cardiff volunteer team will be taking over Womanby Street for the third year running, to bring Cardiff citizens a festival of the best new local talent, whilst also making a difference globally. The Oxjam Cardiff Takeover will be an all day extravaganza across multiple venues with live music, comedy, dance, art auctions and much, much more, for only £6 (advance price).

The event is organised by local volunteers and involves local acts, with all of the profits going towards Oxfam’s work to help others to overcome poverty and suffering around the world. The Globe Reopens The Cardiff music scene was dealt a curious blow by the sudden closure of The Globe at the start of August. Initial concerns were that the place would be closed for God knows how long, especially in the context of the noise reduction issues which plagued it in 2010 for several months, but since then the new management have come forward with reassurances. At the time of going to press, Globe is set to reemerge on 28 August with fresh refurbishments, air-conditioning, a fully stocked and better ranged bar, as well as an upstairs lounge.

New Managing Director, David Matthews, has stated that the refreshed Globe will be hosting single nights, karaoke, discos and cover artists. But alongside this, there is hope for the more conventional live music nights with Owen Bowley, involved in bookings and promising plenty of emphasis on the local scene.

The plan appears to be 7 nights a week opening, meaning that there is scope for a quality and varied calendar of events.

Time will tell how this all pans out but, at the very least, Cardiff will be once more the beneficiary of a plush mid-sized venue in a city crying out for it. Thank Geoffrey for that! theglobecardiff.com

After spending the last year promoting debut album Goodbye Falkenburg, touring with British Sea Power and getting touted by mainstream music journalists in Mojo, Q Magazine and NME, Race Horses are back in the studio. MMP caught up with Dylan Hughes to ask what the future holds for Aberystwyth’s finest….

Race Horses MMP: Good afternoon Dylan, how are you?

RH: I’m fine thanks, it’s very sunny in Cardiff today.

MMP:Race Horses are originally from Aberystwyth, what was the local music scene like at the time you were starting out?

RH:The scene was basically a lot of school bands, and there were great gigs in The Cŵps (Coopers Arms).

We’d put on gigs ourselves and have strobe lighting and smoke machines – even though we were a school band playing in a local pub. There were really cool Aberystwyth based bands (Hot Puppies, Murry The Hump/The Keys, Crocketts/The Crimea), and I remember being blown away when I saw The Crimea, but we were a bit young at the time so we’d often get turned away by the bouncers at their gigs.

MMP:Your debut record as Race Horses; Goodbye Falkenburg, was a critical success - did the popularity of the album match your expectations?

RH: We didn’t have any specific expectations, I’m really glad that people liked it and went out and bought it. I’m really proud of Goodbye Falkenburg but our sound and songs SEPTEMBER 2011 | www.themmp.tv

have changed a bit since then so we’re really excited about releasing some new stuff.

MMP:Is a second album waiting in the wings?

RH: There is a 2nd album waiting in the wings for its cue! We recorded it a month ago in Miloco Studios in South London – it’s an old swimming pool and a great place to record. We did it in eight days and it’s probably the most enjoyable experience I’ve had with the band. We’re in the middle of mixing and mastering the record now. I can’t wait for people to hear it.

MMP:For a band with such eclectic influences – the sound on Goodbye Falkenburg is very distinctive. Did you plan to develop on your sound, or were you keen to make a vastly different record?

RH: Yes, the new record is more direct – it’s got a certain sound and vibe to it. It sounds like an album, whereas Goodbye was more of a collage of songs and ideas. There are a lot of beats and percussion on this record – there’s less smooth overdubs and more key lines and sounds. I think this album is more forward looking and less retro than Goodbye – we were listening to M.I.A a lot, also trying to get the energy of bands like Dexy’s and

Soft Cell, but still with pop songs at the heart of it all.

MMP:How did your relationship with Dave Wrench (Producer) come about, and did you work with him again on this record?

RH: We mixed this new record with Dave – he’s brilliant at bringing sounds and songs to life. We met him when we went to Bryn Derwen Studios to do a radio session for Radio Crymu. We were into Zabrinski and British Sea Power who he’d recently worked with – we were only 16 or something when we met, so a lot of our music education has come from him.

MMP: It was mentioned in the press release of your debut album that you wanted to make your fifth album first – which album is this?

RH:I guess this one will be our first!

We wrote and recorded it quite quickly so it’s really fresh and exciting. With

Goodbye it was done over months and had songs we had written a year or so earlier. It’s quite an energetic album, youthful – so yes this will be our debut.

MMP: We love the video for Man In My Mind, what was the idea behind puppets, space and death?

RH: Ben Reed was the director and visionary behind the video. I think it was about 4 directors in the 60s filming a stop motion film with puppets and finally the pressure gets too much for one of them and he brutally kills the others.

MMP: You have recently been on tour with British Sea Power, how was the experience and were there any particular highlights?

RH: It was brilliant – one of my favorite tours. The crowds were great and it was amazing to see BSP every night and get to know them. I think my highlight was hanging out and having a drink with

BSP and getting to play to such a great audience every night MMP: What does the future hold for Race Horses?

RH: We’ve had a bit of a line-up change recently – Alun Gaffey has left and Mali and Dan have come in. Our live set up has changed vastly – it’s quite a big set-up now (so mid slots at Barflys will be very difficult). The immediate future is all about gigging and putting up versions of our new songs on our website. Making the live shows an exciting experience and trying to create something exciting and creative online as well. The new album will be out after the summer – and after that we’ll never look back.

M Man Without Country The earnest figure cut

an Without Country are named as such to symbolise their lack of belonging; but it could just as easily reflect their lack of allegiance to the scene, lack of allegiance to genre and society-atlarge. The duo of Ryan Owen and Tomas Greenhalf do not belong, they don’t feel like they belong and this feeling was shared by Phillip Nolan in Edward Everett Hale’s, The Man Without A Country.

For their forthcoming album Foe, Owen and Thomas have spent years in isolation, three to be precise – the duo hibernated and perfected their sound, each track has been lovingly crafted and tweaked to unfathomable detail until ready for consumption, all this despite having been on the radar of Radio One for some years – performing on the Introducing Stage at Glastonbury in 2009. But Man Without Country’s story does not stop there, last year the band signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chapell (no mean feat for any musician hoping to license their tracks to a wider audience) and it is through film and television where one can predict Man Without Country gaining success, their music is paradoxically soft yet brash, epic and yet humble, which is partially due to the involvement of Ken Thomas, producer-at-

large on M83’s Saturdays=Youth, Clinic’s Winchester Cathedral and Y Psychic TV’s Dreams Less Sweet.

Thomas’ trademark vocal CM production seeps over Inflammable Heart, Ryan Owen’s voice sounding MY likes a cross between Genesis CY P-Orridge and Neil Tennent.

Incidentally, the dark, dramatic and CMY highly recommended video could be mistaken for an M83 effort K and perfectly illustrates the last third to Man Without Country’s sound; one part experimental, one part pop and one part post-rock.

However the band are by no means futurists, their sound (although contemporary) is underlined with eighties electronica – modified and widened for the 2010’s, indeed in the same way that Saturday’s=Youth was unabashedly revivalist, a similar 80’s aesthetic can be heard in not only Owen’s vocals but in Thomas’ choice of synthesizer, opting for Moog moods and Italo disco leads – albeit in a more picturesque manner. It is a concoction that works, and an insight to a future direction for dance music.

Man Without Country released their first single, King Complex on the 15th August.

The Blackout

Following a largely sold out UK headline tour in support of their critically acclaimed third album, The Blackout continue to take 2011 by the balls.

The MMP grabbed a few words with frontman Gavin Butler to discuss recently released album, Hope, and the festival season.

E

merging in 2003, the Merthyr Tydfil post-hardcore crew have enjoyed a continual rise since the release of their debut full-length some four years ago. Now, Hope epitomizes the recognition that these local lads deserve.

“It’s the best thing that The Blackout has ever done,” says Butler. “We stepped it up with this record and not to sound too cliché, but it’s a very grown up record compared to the last two.”

The newest record deals with a variation of different sounds and emotions. There are distinctive, heavy pop songs with toing-and-froing between Butler and co-vocalist Sean Smith to straight-up power ballads, but the album title sums up the feel of the album. “I think the one running theme is the title, Hope. It’s why we chose the name,” Butler states.

Last month, the ballads stayed at home when The Blackout tore up the Reading and Leeds main stages; an opportunity Butler explains the band were hugely grateful for. “It’s a festival we’ve gone to as punters since we were 16, so to be asked to play the main stage for the second time was amazing”. The Blackout thrive in these live settings – catch them at Merthyr Rock Festival on September 4th to witness this for yourselves. In typical form, Butler assures us that fans can expect “blood, sweat and beers!”

One big party, that’s how a festival should be, though the charismatic Welshman didn’t shy away from offering a key survival tip.

“Take wet wipes and cologne, just in case you get lucky with the opposite sex. If you’re going with your other half this rule still applies, I don’t care how long you’ve been together, no-one wants smelly bits!” he warned.

The Blackout may have taken a mature step when it comes to writing and recording, as Hope has demonstrated, but after hitting the festival stages this year, all hell has broken loose. myspace.com/theblackout The Latest Fashion is out now on Hassle Records.

Dr Paul Carr is principal lecturer in popular music at The Atrium, University of Glamorgan. As a musician he has recordedwithsomeofthebiggestnames in the music industry,such as the James Taylor Quartet, saxophonist Bob Berg and The Jazz Renegades. Since moving into full-time academia,Paul’s research interests have focused on a huge variety of themes, but his recent work has focused on the live music scene in Wales.

Read on for some wonderful insights from the man himself.

MMP: Recently, you conducted Assembly-funded research into the live music scene in Wales. What kind of conclusions did you draw on the back of that work?

DPC: Firstly, I have to say that there are so many great musical initiatives going on in Wales, not only in terms of the music, but also with support organisations such as the Welsh Music Foundation, Community Music Wales, Trac etc. What came out of the report is that Wales currently constitutes around 4% of the UK live music industry – which equates to around £60 million per year. Much of this income comes from Popular music ventures, and the purpose of the report was to suggest ways in which Wales can set strategies in place to improve this income stream.

I feel there is a lot we can learn from other nations such as Scotland for example, which has an 11% cut of live music industry profits. It is also good to see that the Arts Council of Wales has now set small grant funding streams in place to assist small music business to grow. Other key themes coming out of the report include the importance of the industry working collegially with local councils and the tourist industry; the need to inform industry practitioners of funding that is available and how to complete application forms; the need for the development of new business models that exploit how the industry has changed and the need to continue developing training initiatives that serve the music industry well. MMP: Aside from your work in University of Glamorgan, you are also an esteemed musician – who have you most enjoyed working with and why?

DPC: During my time living and working in London, I was lucky enough to work with so many great musicians in lots of different situations. I think my proudest moment is getting to record a track for Polydor records with the late great Bob Berg. Bob played with Miles Davies for many years, and was one of the most influential sax players to emerge during the 1980’s. To get to record with one of my heroes with ‘The Paul Carr Quartet’ was way beyond anything I ever expected as a musician. My time as a member of the James Taylor Quartet runs a close second. Looking back, this band had a big impact on the Acid Jazz scene of the early 1990’s, and provided me with an opportunity to travel and play in lots of venues and festivals throughout Europe MMP: Are you currently involved in any music projects? If so could you tell us a bit about them?

DPC: My big project at the moment is setting up a new Foundation Degree in Music Industry Entrepreneurship that is offering 75 Bursaries to music industry practitioners over the next three years.

It is aimed at anyone working in the music industry, ranging from musicians, to journalists, to engineers, etc. It is funded by the European Social Fund, and providing you live or work in a Convergence Area of Wales, there is an opportunity to get all of the fees paid. This means that providing you meet the criteria, it is possible to get the first two years of a degree for free.

What is unique about the programme is it allows people working in the music industry to obtain academic credit for the experience they have and the work they are currently doing. It is delivered

mainly by distance learning, and the first cohort starts in September this year. The funding lasts for three years, so if anyone is interested, I encourage them to get in touch. As you can tell, I am very excited about it.

MMP: In your opinion, what makes a great musician?

DPC: It really depends on what area of the music industry you are involved in.

If we consider the working musician, I think the most important attribute a musician can have is reliability and versatility. Firstly, no one will employ anyone who is not reliable. You can be the greatest musician in the world, but if you don’t deliver on time, there is no way you will get continued work.

Regarding versatility, the vast majority of the working players I know on the London scene are all versatile to some degree. This can range from simply being able to play many different styles of music, to the concept of the portfolio musician, which is how most people make a living these days. It is not uncommon for someone making a living as an instrumentalist in the popular music industry, to also get work in areas such as computer games and jingle writing, music transcription, music production and engineering, and wait for it – teaching. The ability to do all of these things well can also arguably be an indicator of a ‘great’ musician.

MMP: Can you tell us something about yourself that, perhaps, your students don’t know?

DPC: Most of my students probably don’t know a great deal about my background, so this interview may give them an insight they have not heard before. Life as an academic sometimes provides a stereotypical view of who a person is.

I would say that probably the biggest surprise for students is that I used to play in a heavy metal band in Newcastle as a teenager that recently released their first album. My long hair made me look very different in those days!

Unafraid to reconcile with all of their musical influences, Chaos Trigger’s latest works raise a firm middle finger to genre boundaries as they masterfully blitz their way through a whole host of them. Pummelling opener Robustus packs enough punches to go the rounds with Joe Calzaghe, before the thrash riffs and breakdowns of Faceless leave you, well, faceless. Chaos Trigger include elements of many metal influences in Red, not playing copycat, but creating a powerful and unique sound throughout. Proceedings come to a close with the magnificently crafted Suffering, which showcases the prowess of this South Wales quintet to a tee and gives your aural senses a reprieve from the brutal yet masterful battering they have just received. This brief collection of jaunty, upbeat songs from Sion Russell Jones is bound to keep toes tapping and bring smiles to even the gloomiest of faces.

Close harmonies are, at times, Simon and Garfunkel-esque, though there is something about the singing style which may irk after extensive listening. Throughout the EP, Jones combines traditional country-bluesish musicality and form with an impressively fluid voice, giving character to his quick-paced lyrics and a contemporary edge and quirky twist to the songs. The distinctive production isolates each instrument, giving a pleasing, though inexplicably minimalist sound that emphasises Jones’ voice. A particular highlight is the saloon style piano break in the penultimate track. A happy, cheerful release and a solid four out of five. JA myspace.com/chaostrigger

“Onions make me cry so you don’t have to…” Trwbador’s rapid swell in popularity is certainly well-earned and wellfounded. The Sun in the Winter EP showcases everything the Carmarthenshire duo do fantastically. In typical form, the material deals with raspy loops, glitch-ridden grooves and highly appealing linear textures throughout. Owain Gwilym’s sparse instrumentation platforms Angharad Van Rijswijk’s delicate delivery, underpinned by strong sound programming and sample-handling. Standout tracks, Red Handkerchiefs and the eponymous opener demonstrate Trwbador are honing their folktronic avant-pop with great success.

However, with this highly distilled aesthetic, how the outfit intend to develop their music remains to be seen. The MMP has never been more eager to observe the growth of such a talented, intriguing outfit. ST trwbador.co.uk

Orcop Orcop While Orcop’s debut long player is undoubtedly an interesting set of electronica, it does beg the question ‘What do I do with it?’ Too dark for daytime listening and too scary for the night, these ten tracks lend themselves more towards soundtracks than chinstroking appreciation. North K, for example, wouldn’t sound out of place on Brad Fiedel’s soundtrack for the first Terminator film: a linear, low synth line presses relentlessly forward while atmospheric samples phase in and out of focus. Opener ‘Trecco’ is probably the most accessible; it’s expansive texture and delayed loops make it, while unsettling, great for chill-out. Central pair Planted and Dancing In My Dark, however, are markedly abstract, bringing the aforementioned terror. A good, if difficult, listen. JOC myspace.com/orcop

Huwie PricE Folds EP Huwie is one of the friendliest, most familiar faces on the Cardiff acoustic circuit.

This famous enthusiasm shines through in Folds like sunlit silver. Vocally, Price oscillates between the de-intonated rasps of Clayhill’s Ali Friend and Jack Johnson’s mellower-than-yellow delivery. Highlights include the eponymous opener, weaving ambiguous chord suspensions and major resolutions with immense craft. Shipwreck also displays some wonderfully sensitive vocal harmonies and string countermelodies.

Instrumentally, whilst this ’less is more’ aesthetic is ideal for a five-track EP, this reviewer is eager to see how Price would handle arrangements for a larger ensemble - as could be necessary for enough variation in a longer tracklist. Otherwise, a highly enjoyable and really rather relaxing listen. ST huwieprice.com

The Toy Band Knitted Image When surveying the qualities of The Toy Band last year the MMP was struck by their paper-twixt-bumcheek tight musicianship and dexterous songwriting. Both emerge plentifully with this, their debut LP. Starting with office favourite, Are You Knocking Or Making, Knitted Image is immediately characterised by imaginative pace changes, fantastic instrumentation and sharp lyricism.

From there Lily brims with hard-indie rock histrionics, Bartholomew Fair echoes Kinks-esque storytelling, Knockin At The Door rasps like Squeeze fondling Billy Bragg’s temples. Each is a highlight and bewilderingly good. Though not always as immediately enchanting (e.g. The Rookeries), the slower moments also often reward, as with Managing Director, simply because of the spontaneous melodies and attentive composition. Ffred Jones Welsh Whiskey Society In many ways, this album is neatly packaged for the listener by the words ‘Acoustic Music Maker’ that appear on the cover. Ffred Jones is an accomplished guitarist, a fine singer and writer, abilities clearly honed from playing in pubs and festival day stages. While Welsh Whiskey Society’s subdued sonic palette encompasses more than just a man and his guitar, they are always present, letting the smoky notes of the supporting players wrap around and tastefully illuminate the tight songwriting.

Mostly, this is painting-by-numbers song production, a guide to ‘what should be done with an acoustic singer songwriter’, though rapping occurs on ‘In This River’ courtesy of Ibo Murinde. It’s definitely tasty, but doesn’t have the finish of a classic. JN myspace.com/ffredjones

Super Cute Voices Camera Shop EP Having gained a reputation for their electro-new-wave live shows, here Super Cute Voices show just how joyous the transfer to record can be.

Imagine Kraftwerk chasing Blur and Devo through a Nintendo landscape constructed by the mind of a cyborg. With that, you pretty much have them nailed. And they are, quite simply, brilliant fun. Expertly programmed, composed and with surprising depth of songwriting under all of the frenetics, there are few downspots. RE – Doki Doki is littered with hooks, Camera Shop explodes like a blunderbus firing synths at you unflinchingly, and NEET even seems to have Chun Li from Street Fighter guest-vocalling. Telefair I Looked At Bees / It’s A Misery It’s amazing what you can get for free these days. Head on over to Owlet Music’s site and you can lay your eager mits on this rich and excellent two-track EP, or double A side as we used to call them. I Looked At Bees starts with atmospheric acoustica and involved lyricism before exploding into the kind of lo-fi electronica you’d find on Grandaddy’s Sophtware Slump. It’s expansive within its own imaginative aesthetic and lives in the memory much longer than it’s four and a half minutes. Equally as impressive is It’s A Misery which recalls the bittersweet moments of Eels while charting obtuse yet affecting lyrical passages Daniel Johnston would be proud of. a pretty decent slice of anthemic indie-rock from this South Wales four-piece; its roots are in the Feeder school of song writing and it sports an uplifting, sing-along chorus (as you would expect). This is a nice, radio friendly tune which should help things along for them and it’s fun to bop about to, so plenty of scope for the track making it as an indie dance-floor filler. They probably could have got away with shaving a minute or so off the running time, though, as it loses momentum about half way through and with it goes your attention. Tracks like this ought to be available as an mp1963. The Method deliver an impressively authentic sounding cut of amphetaminefuelled proto-psychedelia. Art Gallery builds around a reverb soaked stomp as a schizophrenic vocal switches from Sunday morning country to Saturday night nastiness. The culmination, a compulsive call-and-response chorus chant, gives way to a melancholic comedown while the lyrics caution “slow down and you’ll suffer”.

Elsewhere a delightfully quirky spy catcher solo evaporates into a brief taste of big beat brass. This is the kind of song that wouldn’t be out of place on one of Crypt Records “Back From The Grave” compilations, and it would be one of the better tracks at that. MH themethod.eu

Cutting your teeth in the same room you sleep in isn’t the simplest way to catapult yourself onto the first rung of the illustrious ladder that is the music industry. However, Shadow Of The Sun have produced four demos made of pretty stellar stuff, considering they’re fresh from the bedroom. Naturally the sound production can hinder, but plenty of raw quality shines through. With a mix of outright rock ‘n’ roll and a couple of slower, melodic numbers, hopefully more of the former and a stint in the studio will move them out of the shadows and into the limelight. on receiving this demo, i smiled condescendingly while glancing over the band’s press pack - a colourful ransomnote style logo and pixelated profiles of the three-piece from Bridgwater. After hearing the first track, I’d never felt like more of a moron. Rife with excellently executed linear grooves, bellowing but ever-accurate vocals and wonderful bass countermelodies, Why Kill Ian? have clearly pinned their sound and style in this small batch of three-and-a-half minute indie/pop delights. actually, Ellie makes great music. This demo consists of four incredibly well-conceived, well-judged songs, displaying all the musical, emotional and intellectual depth of a songstress in clear command of her craft. Tracks like the standout Arms Distance and The Calm Before The Storm betray adept, nuanced guitar work and equally accomplished vocal delivery. Ellie shifts from delicate melodies to resounding choruses with great ease, underlining impressions of Laura Marling and Regina Spektor in her songcraft. Poket Trez are a Welsh hip hop troika, augmented on new single “Ffati Bwm Bwm” by sultry vocalist Swci and bilingual beat box Mr Phormula. I was half expecting to hear a re-working of Carl Malcom’s reggae novelty Fatty Bum Bum, but it becomes immediately obvious this loveable wideload is an original work. Poket Trez have made a modular monster here; there is no narrative rapping to drive the track onwards, only repeated snatches from Swci, wrapped around blocks of mob vocal and satisfying bass heft. Spillers Pick of the Month SofT hEaRTEd SCiEnTiSTS Wandermoon Escape is something we all dream of from time to time. The desire to just leave everything, tell no-one and disappear to the countryside and lose yourself for a while is potent and nigh-on universal, and Wandermoon is built on this idea. In this case escape is achieved via psychedelic folk-rock, a confection of guitars and mandolins, synthesisers and organs, melodic bass and sky-gazing harmonies wrapping around songs landing somewhere between the pastoral and the parochial. It’s seemingly not possible to make South Wales glamorous or romantic and ultimately this is an escape to the back garden rather than the wild moors, but it’s a very pleasant one for that. Oxjam Cardiff: A Brief History

Oxjam is Oxfam’s nationwide volunteer-led music festival and has been running in Cardiff since 2006. Despite not knowing what a ‘backline’ was, having little-to-no experience in events and being a horribly optimistic University graduate, Gemma White decided to get involved with the festival in 2007.

xjam is Oxfam’s nationwide volunteer-led music festival and has been running in Cardiff since 2006. Despite not knowing what a ‘backline’ was, having little-to-no experience in events and being a horribly optimistic University graduate, I decided to get involved with the festival in 2007. I’ve been volunteering with Oxjam ever since, and now manage the Oxjam Cardiff Team, organising several musical fundraising events each year, including the annual Oxjam Cardiff Takeover. I now know what a backline is. Kind of…

When I first started volunteering with Oxjam, we were given free rein over the type of event that we put on. Then in 2008, a man in Nottingham held an all-day multi-venue event, raising £15,000 in one day. From then on, the ‘Oxjam Takeover’ was born and there are now over 40 teams across the UK organising Takeover events that take place throughout October.

The first Oxjam Cardiff Takeover in 2009 featured over 50 local acts including headline sets from Race Horses, Dead Residents, Tiger Please and Whistling Biscuits. It was a great day but we took on too much work – Oxjam was still relatively unheard of in Cardiff.

And it rained. Let’s just say we were a little shy of raising £15,000!

Oxjam Cardiff Takeover 2010 was a great success, raising almost £3000. Most of the volunteer team continued with their roles and we asked local bands and promoters to curate stages, which made our lives a lot easier. We also had a lot of interest from local media which boosted our ticket sales. One of last year’s highlights was Taint curating the upstairs of Clwb Ifor Bach, playing their last ever Cardiff show for us. It’s really humbling when a band of that calibre is willing to not only play for free, but to pick a whole line-up for the festival.

Oxjam Cardiff Takeover will be back for its 3rd year on Sunday 2nd October in Clwb Ifor Bach, Dempseys, Revolution and The City Arms, with stages curated by Nation Radio, Spillers Records, The Miniature Music Press, Starving Artists, Associated Minds, No Sweat and more. Once again, all of the acts will be playing for free, we’ve managed to get all of the venues for free or absolute minimum cost, all the stage curators will volunteer their musical expertise and the Oxjam Cardiff volunteer team have already dedicated hours of their time to planning the festival and fundraising to cover any production costs. It really does make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
