WOMEN of CHANGE REWRITING THE RULES! Story by Roman Photography: Rishab Dhiman Photography, Styling: Prerna Gautam, Assistant styling: Princi Bansal

HISTORY IS TESTIMONY TO THE FACT THAT WOMEN HAVE HAD DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES AT DIFFERENT TIMES. SOCIETIES ACROSS THE WORLD HAVE HAD MANY STRONG WOMEN FIGURES - WOMEN WARRIORS, POLITICAL LEADERS, AND SUCCESSFUL SPORTSPERSON. EVEN OUR INDIAN MYTHOLOGY SPEAKS OF MANY CAPTIVATING WOMEN CHARACTERS – CHARACTERS THAT WERE POWERFUL, HAD A MIND OF THEIR OWN, WHO TRUSTED THEIR SENSIBILITIES, DISPLAYED SHARP ACUMEN, AND WERE COMPASSIONATE AND LOVING. As times progressed, women found their freedom challenged. While many remained fearless and fought the battle single handedly, some succumbed to the pressure. Michelle Obama once said, “When women and girls rise, their communities and their countries rise with them.” The world has witnessed “sheroic” stories of grace, dignity, willingness, fighter spirit from women across the globe. The stereotypes are being wiped out at a rate faster than one could have thought a few years ago. The glass ceiling is outdated for the women of today. As Priyanka Chopra once famously said, “Don’t try to squeeze into a glass slipper. Instead, shatter the glass ceiling.” Women are increasingly choosing to voice their opinion even it means they have to pay a price; they are leading the boardroom discussions, heading multi-billion dollar multinational enterprises and still managing their homes with equal ease. A girl who beat the odds to script her blockbuster life story, a super woman who is out to conquer the world, a life coach that promises to bring out the best and an entrepreneur who is ready to take on the world. Read on to find more about each these inspirational and encouraging stories.

AMAN HORA

Unleashing the power within YOU! WHEN THEY SAID IT IS ALL IN THE NAME, THEY MEANT IT. AMAN HORA IS NO DIFFERENT. THESE WORDS, AS YOU UTTER, RELEASE AN ABSOLUTE POSITIVE VIBE IN THE ECOSYSTEM THAT SURROUNDS YOU. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, AS YOU READ THIS ARTICLE, SAY IT OUT ALOUD REPEATEDLY, AMAN HORA. THE VIBRATIONS ARE POSITIVE. AFTER A COUPLE OF ATTEMPTS TO BE CONNECTED WITH HER FOR THIS COVER STORY, I FINALLY GOT LUCKY THE THIRD TIME. I WAS GREETED BY A POWERFUL VOICE THAT IN NO WAYS WAS OVERBEARING BUT INSTEAD WAS THERAPEUTIC. A FEW SECONDS INTO THE CONVERSATION, I FELT LIKE I ALMOST KNEW HER SINCE FOREVER.

A

man Hora, founder director of EMPOWER 2 B THE BEST, is an Internationally Certified Business Coach, Facilitator from Managing with Heart and Mind, Transformational Coach, Internationally Licensed Life Coach, Prosperity Workshop Leader, Heal Your Life Workshop Leader from Heart Inspired Presentations LLC, Advanced Angel Healer and a Motivational Speaker. The natural curiosity of my mind got the better off me when I asked her how did it all began for her. She breaks into a laughter and says, “Intriguingly enough, I always have been a very optimistic person. My first reaction to any and everything has always been to look at the circumstances encouragingly. For me, the way I look at situations in life, the glass is always half full.” Is not that difficult I suggest, to always being the person who looks at the silver lining. She says affirmatively, “No. If you train your mind to look at situations in a particular way, it always will. The universe is like an empty vessel. It will echo only the energies that you release.” I am instantly catapulted into this world of progressive, upbeat and optimistic outlook. In my head, I am already thinking of situations that I have hitherto looked at undesirably. Such is the impact of Aman Hora. You cannot miss the positivity that she guarantees in her environment. She says, “I have only channelized my inner energies into my work and it has massively contributed to my growth as a person.”

“Every moment in awareness is a gift to ourselves.” – Aman Hora Aman Hora has been trained in Louis Hay’s philosophies of life. “You are worthy of all love present in Universe as you are precious child of God.” – Aman Hora Aman does complete justice to her role as a transformational coach as she spends hours, days, weeks and even months in putting together workshops that center on bringing out the best that lies within our self. Curator of detailed workshops like Code of Success, Love Yourself Transform Your Life, Forgiveness, Deservability, and many more, she has helped participants of her workshop to attain their much-desired goals while bringing more joy and abundance in their lives. At a time when many of us are dealing with emotional anxieties, she teaches how to handle emotions of self and of others. Changing lives for better. It must be liberating to have such an impact on people, I proclaim. She says coyly, “It is a part of my job. I feel vindicated when the participants walk out transformed.” Without an iota of doubt, humility is a virtue that is synonymous with her.

The results have been remarkable. The patients have shown exemplary recovery with her guidance and practice of self-belief and positive thinking. “Universe gifts are abundant, you just have to be open to receive them” – Aman Hora Her body of work is notably extraordinary. My family has been my pillar of strength.” Mr. Harinder Singh Hora, a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist himself, has always motivated Aman to help people by contributing to their holistic growth and attainment of perfect life-balance. Her children, Mr. Ishwin Singh Hora, Ms. Rabia Hora and Ms. Rabani Hora, also encourage her extensively in this beautiful journey. A staunch believer of Karma and the power of good deeds, she zealously continues to do her bit for the society. Backed by her husband’s enthusiasm and relentless support, the Hora couple has started IRRAH, a corporate social responsibility arm of their group companies, to support talented children in the fields of sports, art, music and various other fields. We have spent over an hour chatting. I am flabbergasted at her willingness, her passion, her confidence, and her optimism. She is an inspiration. In the world of Aman Hora, the way you look at life is the way you create your life. It has been a while since we have logged off the call but the voice of Aman Hora still reverberates in my mind. Grippingly enough, the glass of water on my desk is half-full. “Life isn’t about finding yourself, it is all about creating yourself ” – Aman Hora 21

DR. PALLAVI VENGURLEKAR The unstoppable wonder woman!

THE FIRST WORDS TO COME OUT OF ME WHEN I INITIALLY HEARD THE BRIEF OF THIS COVER STORY WAS, “YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. THIS IS UNREAL.” I AM LIKELY TO PLACE MY MONEY ON THE FACT THAT AS READERS YOU WOULD FEEL SIMILARLY BY THE END OF THIS ARTICLE. DR. PALLAVI VENGURLEKAR IS A SENSATION. SHE IS A UNIQUE PHENOMENON. A MARVEL. IF THIS WERE NOT GENIUS, I WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT IS.

B

orn into a Konkan family, she spent her formative years in idyllic paradise of Goa and then moved to the fast-paced and cosmopolitan Mumbai with her family. She eventually picked the heart of the nation, Delhi, where she is currently based. Back in the day, changing her location from Goa to Mumbai did not come easy for her. She was a shy, reticent and timid girl who was struggling to find her space in the new city. Her father recognized the early signs of reserved behavior in his daughter and was quick to pull her out of it. He immediately got her enrolled into Karate classes at the young age of 11 years, which continued for a period of close to two decades. Dr. Pallavi does not blink an eye in attributing her success to her father. While she may have found it difficult to fit in amongst the super confident and modern kids of Bombay at the beginning, somewhere deep inside her was a fighter who did not understand “giving up”. A lot of what she is today in terms of physical strength, endurance and mental fitness is because of the karate classes her father enrolled her into. She recalls, “During the time when I was going through the conditioning skills in my karate classes, I used to return with bruises all over my body. There have been times when I have fractured my ribs, broken my nose and hurt my feet during the open fights without any gears.” A former martial arts trainer with a black belt third Dan, she shares that her biggest learning through this phase of her life was that even if you go down, you need to pull yourself back up and win over again. She remembers fondly that in order to earn her black belt second Dan, she was asked to run for eleven kilometers, made to do 800 push-ups with a fractured foot wrapped in a bandage at one go amongst other things. By the time the third Dan came, it almost felt like a cakewalk for which she will remain ever grateful to her mentor. Being the young girl who was pushed into karate to bring out her true self, time flew and it was now time for her to choose a profession. She took up dentistry as her subject, finished her BDS, secured a gold medal being the university topper in MDS, and went to Germany to do her super specialty in dental implants. She credits her parents and sisters for their unstinted support. She established her clinic in Mumbai for almost four years before she decided to take the marital plunge after which she moved to Delhi. Married to a Dentist, the couple have two functional dental clinics in Delhi with state of the art technology.

Her life in the metro was going just fine until the athlete in her whispered. She found the missing piece of the puzzle and began undertaking marathon runs in different parts of the country. The whispers grew louder in voice. She wanted to do more. She took up ultramarathons - she opted for the basic 56-kilometer run at first- to test her body’s endurance level and tried her hand at trail running, soldierathon, dash run and devil circuit. A podium finisher always, medals came to her left, right and center. Getting to that podium must require enormous efforts behind the scenes I ask convincingly. She reveals that she spends a lot of time on her fitness including running for 30-40 kilometers in a week duly supported by cross training and power lifting. Just as I was processing this bit of information, as a somebody who has never even remotely been in a relationship with gym or anything to do with fitness, she mentions casually, “The devils circuit has some really tough obstacle courses and I have completed all the obstacles for five years consecutively.” A doting mother to two beautiful girls, she says her life changed for better post motherhood. Did motherhood come as a speed breaker in her goals, I ask curiously. She takes a moment, smiles and says, “Not at all. I have an incredible support system in my family and close friends. My husband, my parents, my in-laws and few of my really close friends have been extremely supportive in all my endeavors.” The turning point in her life was yet to come. The India’s Citizen Squad aired on the Discovery Channel, India’s leading destination for factual entertainment, was a first of its kind military based show, featuring selected civilians who are eager to change the Indian society for the better. Selected from thousands of entries, the 12 24

member strong India’s Citizen Squad were trained to under-go an ultimate endurance boot camp under the expert supervision of former special forces. The training that largely comprised of intense physical and mental challenges such as 100 feet rock climbing, exercise in icy cold water, endurance run carrying 30 kilograms of battle load, rifle training, hostage training - was designed to help these civilians to become first responders in case of emergencies. When she entered the semi-final auditions after leaving behind over seven thousand applicants, she noticed that the group comprised of people who were from a much younger age bracket than her. Her eyes meandered through the semifinalists and found none to be from her age category. Nonetheless, she delivered her best and went back home not thinking too much about it. On a fine evening with friends, she received a call at midnight. Unsure at first she decided to pick it up. In that moment, the world around her changed. She was selected to be a part of the 12-member India’s Citizen Squad. She was the one amongst two women who were part of the squad. The India’s Citizen Squad had representation from across the country such as Delhi, Kashmir, Karnataka and varied backgrounds like doctor, martial arts trainer and fitness enthusiast. She reminisces her training days and says proudly, “We were made to undergo the training at a specially created India’s Citizen Squad camp to be headed by Col. Manish Sarin, a veteran from the Gorkha rifles, and along with him 5 ex-special forces from NSG, MARCOS and Para SF. There was one point where all of us were drowned in icy cold water at midnight as part of endurance training. It was a test of faith in ourselves. I realized what the Indian Army and the Armed Forces does for the citizens of this country.” MODISH MAGAZINE

She goes on to say, “When the Mumbai floods happened in July 2005, I was caught right in the middle of it. I walked for almost eight hours in neck deep water to reach a place of safety. Then in July 2006, the Mumbai train bombings took place and I found myself in it. Later, in 2008, as I was returning from my interview for the residency at the Government Dental College, my mom called to check on my safety and updated me about the series of terror attacks that left Mumbai wounded. The next thing I hear her telling me is to go back to the hospital and provide whatever help she can in this time of distress. I remember there were burnt victims going in and out and I realized that a few additional helping hands are always welcome.” I am spellbound at this moment. I do not think my body knows how to react to this. A couple of hello’s later I come back to life and have nothing but applause for her. Even much before the India’s Citizen Squad happened, Dr. Pallavi had already aced the art of being a good Samaritan. At the India’s Citizen Squad, she was the first woman in Indian civilian to receive the badge of honor for completing all the tasks set out for the 12-member squad. Obviously, I am not surprised. I quiz her on how her girls react to this. She chuckles and tells me of the incident that she remembers vividly until today. “This was when I returned home from the India’s Citizen Squad and the girls were all over me. My husband walks in and remarks that you are a commando and now you are behaving like an absolute mom. My little one turns around and tells her father that no daddy she is a mother first and is now a commando. Those words still ring in my ears and inspire me to do more and much more” she says beaming with joy.

If that was not enough, Dr. Pallavi did not stop at that. This time around she chose something completely different from what she has been doing all her life. She applied for the Mrs. India and was a finalist at the Mrs. India World 2019. Without a doubt, Mrs. India is another end of the spectrum. How did this happen, I ask keenly. She confessed that her cousin sister called her and asked her to enroll herself into this considering she is already doing so many things. Her point was, why not. Did she enjoy playing the dress up and glamourous role, I question. She laughs heartily and says, “Well, it was a different experience. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.” Amidst all this frenzy, I wonder how she finds time for herself and her family. She tells me that it is important to compartmentalize and you must be able to do that. She does have her moments of cooking dinner for her loved ones, holidays with family or simply a chilled out weekend with her kids and husband. Listening to her story, I am inspired to hit the gym. It is never too late to make a debut, I tell myself. Dr. Pallavi is a living inspiration in many ways and unbelievable in more ways (she tasted Maggi at 32 years of age!). I pointedly ask her what keeps going her through a bad day. She states, “My closed circle of friends and family keeps me going through the bad days. I am extremely grateful to them and of course the almighty who has been exceptionally kind.” This wonder woman known by the name of Dr. Pallavi Vengurlekar believes heavily on setting herself a goal every time. She says, “Everything in my life is goal based. Without a goal, I am not motivated enough to do my daily routines let alone anything extraordinary.” She is currently working on a new venture and hopes to try her hand at being an entrepreneur. I have given up on thinking if there is anything she cannot do. She truly has pushed the envelope and set new benchmarks for not just herself but each one of those wanting to emulate her. She signs off by saying, “Never give up on your dreams. Dream big. Dreams do come true.” I am instantly sold at her last words. A common girl from Goa who was battling with her inner self has magnificently progressed into this unstoppable wonder woman. More power to her!

RADHAPRIYA BANSAL The creative genius!

THE CAPITAL CITY HAS FINALLY EXPERIENCED SHORT SPELLS OF RAIN HERE AND THERE. THE ROADS ARE INSTANTLY FLOODED. THE TRAFFIC HAS GONE FOR A TOSS. I AM CAUGHT BETWEEN BUMPERS AND RESTLESS DRIVERS WHO CANNOT HELP BUT SHOW OFF THAT THEIR CAR HAS A BETTER HORN THAN ANYONE ELSE DOES ON THE ENTIRE STRETCH. I AM BAMBOOZLED AND WONDERING IF I WOULD EVER MAKE IT HOME IN THIS LIFETIME. A FEW SECONDS PASS AND MY PHONE SCREEN LIGHTENS UP THE CAR (ALMOST LIKE A RAY OF HOPE). THE MESSAGE IS FROM MY EDITORS, REMINDING ME OF THE COVER STORY THAT I NEED TO COMPLETE AT THE EARLIEST.

I

decide to make most of the time and scroll through my phone book to dial in Radhapriya Bansal – Founder and Creative Head at The Color Quo Inc. I am greeted by this animated voice, which completely takes over. “Hi, Radhapriya” I respond lowly to the thrilled hello. After the initial introduction, we have moved swiftly to her story. I cannot wait.

“Entrepreneurship has always played an important in my life. Belonging to a business family, it was the only career I recognized”, asserts Radhapriya. I am straightaway drawn to her vibrant energy that has successfully managed to permeate through the phone lines and the childlike innocence in her voice. She continues, “The Color Quo Inc. is a one stop solution for all creative and designing ideas, catering exclusively to the digital world.” I can hear the enthusiasm in her voice that is an imperative characteristic of an entrepreneur waiting to take on the world. “Can you take me back to how it all started”, I blurt out. She agrees immediately. “I had a creative instinct within me from the time I can remember. I always had a knack for all things creative. This creative urge led me to Paris to pursue masters in marketing in the fashion industry from the very prestigious Istituto Marangoni after completing my Bachelors in Business Administration with a major in Marketing. I returned to India and followed up my course by learning the nuances of marketing and fashion from Pearl Academy.” Paris is the land of design and is a fashion hub with significant influence over the rest of the world. Arguably, some of the most renowned fashion houses come from France. Clearly, the time spent in Paris learning about creativity, design and marketing would have enormously added to one’s experience and outlook. Radhapriya says she could not agree any less. She replies, “While in Paris, I worked with a plethora of luxury brands in their marketing department. That kind of work experience substantially helped me understand the business and gain insights.” I ask whether her stint in Paris has had any role to play in what she does today. She declares, “Oh yes! My experience from back then has paved the path for a lot of what I do today.” 26

I am completely oblivious to the situation outside. I have lost track of where I am and who is honking the loudest. I am consumed in the stories of Radhapriya and waiting to hear what will follow next. For Radhapriya, family comes first. She explains, “I got married at a young age of 22 and a couple of years later was blessed with my son. Keeping in mind our Indian traditions and my love for a harmonious wedded life, I got busy attending to my responsibilities as a mother, wife and daughter-in-law.” As time passed by, her entrepreneurial instinct got the better of her. A realization dawned upon her that life is not to be a stagnant water body but a flowing river, which surges forward by charting a path of its own. Therefore, one fine day, she woke up to the idea of creative and designing solutions in the digital world. Almost like a light bulb moment for you, I exclaim. “Absolutely”, comes the reply. That is how The Color Quo Inc. was born. A strong believer in the secret of manifestation, Radhapriya believes The Color Quo Inc. happened to her at the most opportune moment. It is totally her own brainchild and with sustained efforts and a global vision prompted her to create this unique company. She proudly says, “The Color Quo Inc. is dedicated to positioning itself as a forerunner in the digital world. Today, the world of digitalization is a strategic area of communication and knowledge globally. Yet there are some areas where we lag behind in expertise internationally. Ideas that are bringing about a revolution in the digital world are still at a nascent stage in the domestic web market.” I am intrigued by the name – The Color Quo Inc. I think it is very sassy, now and vivacious. She decodes it for me, “’THE COLOR QUO INC.’ represents, COLOR symbolizing a world of creativity, QUO meaning quotient or existing status quo and INC as in ink, required for writing.” That is cool for a name. She goes on, “We want to showcase a limitless and boundless web world in terms of technological creativity, visually and verbally. Our core focus is on creativity in the originality of design, quality, and the importance of delivering innovative and relatable content. We believe in charting a path beyond boundaries with detailed attention to creativity and to curate MODISH MAGAZINE

VRINDA DUGAR

The self-made artist who followed her heart! UNTIL A FEW YEARS AGO, VRINDA DUGAR, BORN IN KOLKATA, RAISED IN BENGALURU AND CURRENTLY IN JAIPUR WHERE SHE ALSO HAS HER STUDIO, WOULD GO TO HER BED RELIGIOUSLY DREAMING ABOUT HER PASSION FOR ART AND WHAT MUST BE DONE TO CHANNELIZE HER ENERGIES INTO LIVING THAT DREAM. UNLIKE SOME OF US, WHO DREAM WHILE ASLEEP, FOR VRINDA HER DREAMS MEANT HER EYES WIDE OPEN AND HER MIND CONSTANTLY WORKING AGAINST THE PREVAILING ODDS, WHICH MOST OF US EVENTUALLY BEFRIEND.

L

ike any other Marwari girl, the poised and pretty, Vrinda, who suffered from anxiety in her growing up years, had her life cut out for her. Like most Indian parents with a handout on model way of life, her growing up years were no different. Education followed by a swanky corporate job that eventually culminates into a high profile wedding to having a family – her life was sorted.

Be that as it may, artist turned designer, Vrinda decided to turn her back to the preconceived notions of society and set out to do her own thing. Faced with resistance and challenges from within her family, she was determined to not succumb to the societal pressures of what was “expected” of her. She instead motored her way towards her dreams of discovering her innate self through her art and creative desire. Little did she know that discovery of her true potential will have such a profound effect on the core of her being that she would break out of the shackles of anxiety that hitherto caught the better of her for years. Clearly, she had grown as a person – into this self-confident, determined and unwavering personality ready to take on the world. She describes herself to be the quintessential girl-next-door who not just survives but thrives on creativity and finds her life’s purpose in art. While the bit on “I-am-a-regular-girl” may qualify to be a matter of debate (given her extensive body of creative work), there is no denying the fact that Vrinda breathes ingenuity in her daily life. On a regular day in college, where she was pursuing her under graduate course in English Literature, her faculty knowing of her interest in art asked her to put up a few paintings in the college auditorium in preparations of a function. Little did she know, her paintings caught the imagination of the audience so much so that the guests would not leave the hall without one of her artwork and brought her laurels on different levels. Passing it as a one-off event in her otherwise dominated literature life, she did not think much of it (remember, the handbook on life did not feature

pursuing art as a career option) considering she never took any formal training or course in design or anything even closely related to it. However, at the end of the day, the artist within you will find its voice in a way that will usurp every other noise surrounding you and guide you to your full potential. Vrinda is an exemplary example.Vrinda realized her inner wings, which she needed to flutter with such passion to embark on a flight that she quietly, vividly and zealously imagined for herself. Prod her further and she opens up on how none of this came easy. She says, “My parents were adamant that I stick to pursuing my education in English literature and then take up a full time corporate job.” While she only picked up her passion in arts post completing her masters’ course, she turned down a few job offers without telling her parents. Discernably, when her father learned about this development, he was mighty upset and distanced himself for a bit. Nonetheless, Vrinda decided to adorn blinkers (like a horse) that prevented her from being distracted or panic by what was happening around her at the time. She had her eyes firmly set on her goal and if that meant breaking the age-old myths around a woman and how she should lead her life, so be it. She pauses for a second as she sips her coffee, almost reminiscing her childhood days, and flashes her 1000 watt smile to say, “In the hindsight, my papa has always been my rock solid pillar who has quietly been standing in the background watching me grow as a person. For him I was his child, regardless of the gender, whose happiness meant the world to him.” Having turned an entrepreneur (courtesy her Marwari genes) at a young age of 23 when she founded her venture, Art by Vrinda, she says, “Everyone needs time. You need to figure out who you are in this world and find out your own independent identity (separate from your parents, husband etc.) and purpose in life. In today’s world, this is very important – discovering your sense 32

She is a fitting representation to the cohort of the new age tribe of women, and is a beacon of hope to the gazillions out there who have closely held onto their dreams but never really gathered courage to nurture those dreams. For all the women out there who often reach out to Vrinda, inspired by her story, on her Instagram and Facebook page, this is what she has to say, “Let your dreams fly. tasha hails from the colorful and vibrant city of Jaipur. The roots of her existence are strongly linked to the literature, heritage and culture that the city imbibes. Belonging to a background of aesthetics and art, she is a creative writer and even owns a small business. Being a binge and avid reader got her interested in creative writing. The first book she ever read was The Monk who sold his Ferrari, she recalls. She loves the way Robin Sharma explains the aspects of life and success. Writing was not a planned profession for Utasha, she got into it with the motive of inspiring people and passing on a positive message. She wanted to lighten the mental load on people regarding certain subjects. This thought led her to write on the genre - pregnancy & parenting. When spoken about her career and interests, she described it to us with the utmost sincerity in her voice, "Coming from a background in psychology, she learnt that everyone has a seed of love and wisdom sowed deep in their hearts. They just need to follow the right measures for it to bloom and grow". She got enormous support from her parents while choosing her career and that she admits has contributed significantly to her success. On being asked about the turning point in her life, Utasha expresses that “It was a simple workshop called, Angel Card Reading and Angel Therapy, that teaches people on how to receive inspirational messages from one’s inner self. This workshop got me intrigued and I delved myself into meditation.” She believes that meditation and exercise has immensely helped her also in coping up with mild depression that she faced in her 20’s. “One should learn to enrich, grow and not lose hope. Even if one loses hope sometimes, having a loving support system always brings you back on track. “- Utasha Thahrymal When spoken about the power of women, Utasha says, “After I wrote my book ‘’Wise parents, happy children’’ I realized that being a woman is not the easiest job. It brings its own joys but is overall challenging. So, it is important for women to be compassionate with each other and not be judgemental. The idea is to build strong inner self and empower others by giving strength to each other.” P.S. My areas of expertise are culinary arts, nutrition & exercise sciences and NLP. NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programing is a cutting edge science in the field of modern psychology. It has personally helped me and my clients in empowering behavioral changes.

MODISH: How was your childhood? Do you have any childhood memories that you still cherish or repulse? EEFA: It was a quick and adventurous childhood. I matured very soon as I left home at the age of 16 and fended for myself. It was a very rough one but taught me unforgettable precious lessons of life. Having said that , I fondly remember few very sweet memories that are still very vivid in my mind. My parents ran a restaurant and I used to sit on my dad’s lap as an eight year old learning to make kitchen order tickets and manual bills. Another lovely memory I have is of the first two dishes that I cooked. One was Aloo sabzi on a wood fire stove created by me and a friend, we were aged 7. My second dish was a spinach and cottage cheese cannelloni at age 15. It made me feel I was the coolest person alive. MODISH: Were you always interested in the diet and nutrition industry? lifestyle you always want to reach where you are at the moment? EEFA: I was always interested in food that made me look and feel fantastic. I hate the word ‘diet’, its done horrible things to me as a young girl and to millions of others. But I also couldn’t stand restaurant food that made me fat, bloated and sick. My mission has always been to learn how to feed myself, my family, friends and my clients best, in a way that isn’t based on food psychosis and myths but on the actual science of nutrition and the art of transforming it into tasty stylish plates of food that appeals to all 5 senses. I’m not actually where I’ve visualized being but I’m sure I am on my way there.

are just putting a blanket over your dreams so you don’t have to do anything for a while. Then one day you wake up and you’re not a teenager, you are not even in your 20s or 30s or 40s… just an old man or woman on their death bed with their song still in them. Don’t be that person! Sing your song, light your fire, be the star, give your love, run that race, win that game…sure the way will be laid with tons of failures and embarrassing moments but that’s how we mature as human beings, that’s how we learn to make our paths, our legacies, that’s called growing up! Your body is the only place YOU have to live, that’s it, its just this one… so treat it well, treat it with respect!

MODISH: Who has been your role model? EEFA: Oh my god…so many! Firstly my Mom, who is the most amazing cook alive! My Dad taught me to be honest and enterprising. My brother who loves to eat and is a fitness enthusiast, always demanding food that was delicious yet wouldn’t pile on the waistline. One of my early clients who now is a friend and mentor, Karen Anand, opened me up to a whole new world of food journalism and stylish entertaining. But most of all, my mentors at my school, Le Cordon Bleu in London. I was lucky enough to find one to mentor me. It was a very hard learning experience but a delightful one. The amount I have learned about food psychology, food culture, and techniques from them is truly one of the greatest gifts in my life! MODISH: What did you learn from the story of your life that you would like to pass along to the next generation. EEFA: Having an addictive brain type isn’t a disadvantage…it’s an advantage if you use it right. We just need to choose our addictions wisely and know clearly which psychological needs we want to satisfy. Are we looking for security, because of seeing our parents on the verge of divorce or poverty? Or is it an adventure that we are seeking from feeling trapped in an education system that doesn’t fulfill our potential? Or are we seeking to feel more significant in this world where we feel our talents are going unrecognized? Or is it that you are simply looking to feel loved and cherished in this big lonely world? Whatever you do be it drugs, alcohol, sugar, suicidal tendencies or even bullying, it will only give you a temporary respite and never fulfill your that actual need truly. Sure its easier to pick up a cigarette than to have a heart to heart conversation with your folks, or work our ass off over the next twenty years and make that million, find your soul mate, write that book, give that speech, become the star you have dreamed off and know so well in your gut that’s what you are born to do! Smoking, drinking, bitching, complaining MODISH MAGAZINE

MODISH: What was your first job like and how did it help in shaping your career? EEFA: I worked as an aerobics instructor in the gym I wanted to work out in but couldn’t afford to pay the fees. I was 16. They paid me 150 rupees per month and free use of the gym, I was so happy. From there on I was offered a modeling job, they paid me 500 rupees for a fashion show. It taught me the value of hard work, integrity, self-respect and keeping your dignity. No job is too small or too big when your stomach is empty since days and your room rent unpaid. MODISH: What was the biggest turning point in your life? Any sad, tragic or difficult times you’d care to share that made you a stronger person? EEFA: At 16 I was a dignified kid struggling to feed herself, keeping the dream alive. I was making 750 rupees a month on a good month, 150 in a not so good one and nothing in a bad month. I lived on Complan and tap water. By 18, I was making 20k a month as a model,

sometimes a lot more. I had my pad, my little scooty, a line of boys asking me out. I thought I was the sorted! I let it get to my head. Gone was the little girl with a dream and integrity and dignity. I was skinny not because I exercised or ate healthy but because I lived on a diet of black coffee, cigarettes and a cocktail of drugs. I became egocentric, brash, uncaring and scrupeless. One night I was riding my bike and I was hit by a truck. I almost lost my face and legs forever. The following two years were the hardest years of my life. I learned to pray, beg and ask for forgiveness not just from my creator but from all the people I had treated so carelessly, starting with my parents. I was blessed to have found a god sent plastic surgeon who gave me back my face after being told by the top doctors in the country that I would have to learn to live with the scar in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I taught myself how to walk, run again only through God-given divine intervention. The osteopath called it a medical miracle which it truly was but only I know how hard I had to work through unbearable amounts of pain those two years. It was a lesson learned for lifetime. MODISH: What are your strengths and weaknesses? EEFA: My strengths: I am an excellent learner and I love sharing what I’ve learned with others. I have unbounded enthusiasm and curiosity. I make a very good friend because I will stand by you through thick and thin. I’m self-entertaining and never bored. I’m full of new and exciting ideas. You can put me in any country with no money in my pocket and I’ll still make it. My weaknesses: I lack confidence, I tend to procrastinate, I love to eat and drink everything. I am incapable of taking holidays where I am doing nothing constructive, I tend to become introverted and isolated if I don’t make an effort to connect with my world. I tend to be overly self-conscious and have to constantly remind myself to be myself no matter what or with whom. MODISH: If you could do one thing differently in your life, what would that be? EEFA: Tons of things. But I don’t think much about them, I just go ahead and do them. MODISH : How important do you think it is for a woman to be strong and independent in today’s world? EEFA: Man or woman, we all must be strong to fulfill our dreams and overcome the challenges that come along the way. However, I feel flexibility and endurance is as important as strength in the sport of life as in fitness. Strength gives us the courage to overcome challenges, endurance gives us the capability to keep trying until we succeed and flexibility gives us the power to try things a different way when they don’t work one way, it keeps us open-minded and keeps us youthful and refreshed no matter our age.

FOREO UFO SMART MASK TREATMENT No matter what your skin is craving , FOREO’s new collection of UFO masks has just what you need . The UFO Activated Mask formulas targets a specific skin concern – combining a highly-concentrated face mask with an expert UFO treatment routine for total skin recovery . This "smart mask" technology priced at $179 gives your skin all of the benefits of a face mask in just 90 seconds . Like most things nowadays , the product syncs up with an app and you simply have to pop the mask into your UFO and scan the bar code on the back of your mask's packaging to get started.

Can you believe that this one device offers not two or three but five different benefits ? Depending on what your complexion needs the Skin Inc Supplement Bar Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light can help with nearly any skin related issue . After applying a water-based serum , use gently in clockwise circular , upward motions to massage the area . You can use for up to 10 min per application , twice daily.

SKIN INC’S OPTIMIZER VOYAGE TRI – LIGHT

JILLIAN DEMPSEY GOLD SCULPTING BAR The Jillian Dempsey Gold Sculpting Bar, aka this sleek-as-hell T-shaped contraption , could be your skin's new best friend . 24K gold vibrating bar that instantly makes skin feel and appear toned , lifted and contoured and instantly relaxes facial muscles to release tension . The product priced at $ 195 is much easier to use : Simply switch it on and run the bar along any area you want to target , working in upward motions . Don't be surprised if the sensation lulls you to sleep.

The newest drugstore solution to your acne is a Stormtropper-esque mask studded with red and blue lights . It may seem improbable but the science behind this is legit . The technology has been used by dermatologists for decades and also by at home devices . But what makes it better than others is it’s significant result and the price of merely $39.99 . It’s pretty affordable and who doesn’t want to look like a Stormtrooper?

Another LED light must have is LightStim for Wrinkles , a handheld portable device uses skin rejuvenating wavelengths of red light energy to stimulate collagen and subsequently fade wrinkles over time . In order to use , place the light gently touching the skin and hold it in place for about 3 minutes and repeat till you have treated all the areas . Sure , it’s one of the more pricey LED gadgets on the market right now , priced at $249 , but the before and after photos will make your jaw drops. It’s hard to imagine a world without smart devices — especially now that so many are geared towards achieving our skin care goals . While many beauty devices could be considered “smart ,” these beauty devices are categorized in this way because they can connect to the internet , Bluetooth and even specially designed mobile apps . We gathered some of the best devices , don’t forget to give them a try.

ACE MAKEUP ARTIST ANUBHA DAWAR Gives us a few very helpful makeup tips for the greasy, humid & wet monsoon season!!

T

here's something too special about the first monsoon breeze but it's too heartbreaking for the ones who adore makeup! Here's my take on how to set makeup that ensures you look flawlessly gorgeous without worrying about draining your makeup.

1. 2.

Go Minimalistic: The idea to keep it as minimal as possible. Let your skin breathe in the tenacious humid breeze.

Matte not creamy: Go for matte foundation rather than a creamy one! Don't forget to cover-up your base with the dab of setting powder for a long-lasting and fresh makeup look. Also, go matte with your lip tint and choose naturally pink tints that embrace your aura!

3.

Say No to too much Blush: Don’t overdo your blush. Just a dab of cream blush blended outwards for that naturally glowing make up look, does wonders.

4. 5.

Subtle Eyes: The subtle the eye makeup, the gorgeous you look. Pro Tip- Go effortlessly simple to embrace the monsoon breeze!

Give your Mascara a break: It's a No-No season for the mascara, girls! Don't let the rain drain away your simplicity! The lighter your eyes, the more comfortable you will be.

6. Anubha Dawar

Try Gel: If necessary, gel eyeliner can help you sway the rainy days with ease.

Last but certainly not the least, there's nothing more beautiful than your natural beauty and monsoon rains! So let your skin breathe and enjoy the season.

HIDDEN POISONS OF SKINCARE Story by: Lalit Samantray

t is important to realize that even though cosmetics may not be fatal anymore, but they are notorious for the carcinogenic and irritating ingredients that are used to make them. This rising consciousness has in fact prompted several brands to launch edible cosmetics. Basically, sending the message, if it is safe to eat, it is safe to put on your skin. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and jump into edible cosmetics which are clearly a fad or maybe something to spice up your bedroom. So, here is a list of common ingredients to avoid in your products: Parabens: These little monsters act as hormone disruptor and potentially cause breast cancer Phthalates: Phthalates are chemicals which easily absorb into the skin and are often found in plastics besides cosmetics. They are linked to endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and cancer. These act as a family of different chemicals and could be difficult to identify.

3. Fragrance: It is a trade secret as companies do not often have to reveal what chemicals compose the ‘fragrance’. So, opt for fragrance-free products, which imply absence of any ingredients added to impart any distinct smell. Do not confuse it with unscented products, as they have added ingredients to neutralize any scent of a product. Sodium lauryl sulphate: Sodium laureth sulphate: It is a cheap foaming agent and a skin irritant that often triggers allergies. Toulene: Toulene is found in nail polishes and can affect the immune system or cause birth defects in expecting mothers. Formaldehyde: It is used as a preservative in cosmetics and has recently been called out for its carcinogenic and irritating properties. So, look out for natural, clean and safe products that make your skin look good from within. Here are Modish approved products from Indian brands which are calm to your skin: 1. Honest Beauty 2. Perenne 3. Juice Beauty 4. Anjali Herbavedic

rganic vegetables grown right in your own backyard or your windowsill can be a tasty tradition to anyone’s pantry, when done right . But if you are among the ones who have never gardened before, that shouldn’t be a discouragement . We have brought you some simple vegetables that you can easily plant and eat fresh.

What you can grow in your kitchen garden:

CUCUMBERS

Summer cucumbers , with their lively flavour and crisp texture can be fun additions to your garden . Although, they require substancial growing space , they can still be grown in small gardens by training vines onto vertical structures. Sun exposure is crucial to them , they need about 6 - 7 hours of sun everyday. If you want to grow them in containers the best time to set them out is in early May.

RADISHES

Radishes may not be as stylish , like other celebrated kitchen garden crop such as tomatoes or kale , but they are crisp , colourful and delicious . Radishes are low calorie food that are a good source of vitamin C and other antioxidants . If you are new to gardening or want your children to learn , radishes are easy to grow . Radishes can be squeezed in between other plants and are also good at loosening or cultivating soil for slower sprouting veggies like carrots.

GREEN BEANS

As green beans are an all time favourite for holiday meals , pot luck gathering and weekly family dinners , it’s hard to take a wrong turn planting green beans . Many growers pick this plant because they are easy to grow and produce continuously after planting . In general , they are ready to pick in 50 – 55 days , but don’t wait too long as they can become overgrown almost overnight .

KALE

TOMATOES

Nothing can beat the taste of freshly gown tomatoes in your own kitchen garden . You can grow tomatoes in containers or even in a hanging basket in the corner of your kitchen where they’ll be able receive abundant sunlight . There are so many varieties to choose from – cherry tomatoes , to medium sized for salads or large slicing varieties . Depending upon your choice of varieties , you’ll have to allocate space between them from 12 inches apart to 36 inches . Another tip is to plant a basil next to it , which will naturally repel pests and also help in improving tomato flavour.

Whether served as kale chips , in a cheesy gratin or simple steamed , kale has taken vegetable world by storm . Kale can be grown in the tropics just as easily as in far north . If you have a limited space , for growing kale look for varieties that are described as compact and productive . You can harvest baby leaves in just 3 weeks and full sized leaves will mature between 40 – 60 days . Add your fresh home grown kale leaves to salads or smoothies , or make kale chips for your kids to try.

Got a green thumb ? We neither . But that shouldn’t stop us from growing our own garden right in our own backyard . Now that we have these nifty tips up our sleeves , we can stop worrying about unhealthy diet and start eating fresh . 67

FUR FREE LUXURY FASHION Story by Suchita Kalra

FUR HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TOPIC OF CONTENTION WITHIN THE FASHION COMMUNITY, INCITING MUCH – HEATED DEBATE ABOUT ITS USE. To some, it may represent luxury and glamour, while for others it is a subject of animal cruelty. But after the years of relentless campaigning, the tide is turning against fur in the fashion industry. The major fashion houses around the world are finally adopting to become fur free and approach fashion in a more ethical and traditional way, thus bringing sustainable fashion for the future generation. So, for those who are looking to shop more consciously, we have compiled a list of designers who have joined this movement and made a great leap forward for cruelty free fashion.

STELLA MCCARTNEY

Stella was raised by vegetarian parents, so no wonder she decided early on that all her collections would be fur free. “Fur is the most unnecessary thing in the world”, she declared. In 2015 she unveiled "fur-free fur", long-haired synthetic coats that are designed to feel luxurious while still promoting the brand's cruelty-free and ethical philosophy. The brand even established a ‘Fur-Free-Fur’ label on the outside of its faux fur garments to underline its conscious choice.

GIORGIO ARMANI

In 2016, Italian designer Giorgio Armani vowed to stop using fur in his products across the Giorgio Armani, Armani Privé and Emporio Armani brands. The brand explained how technological progress allows designers today “to have valid alternatives that render the use of cruel practices unnecessary with regards to animals”. Teaming up with Humane Society International, the brand was appreciated, calling Armani’s pledge “probably the most powerful message”. 68

MICHAEL KORS

US fashion house Michael Kors is one of the brands to have announced that it will no longer use fur in its collections, after December 2017. Coyote and rabbit were once very popular in Michael Kors’ designs, but they were finally removed in favour of faux fur, as the eponymous designer explained, “Due to technological advances in fabrications, we now have the ability to create a luxe aesthetic using non-animal fur.”

GUCCI

Speaking at the Kering Talk at the London College of Fashion in October 2017, CEO Marco Bizzarri revealed that Gucci will remove fur from all of its collections as of spring/summer 2018. " Technology is now available that means you don’t need to use fur. The alternatives are luxurious. There is just no need”, a spokesman for the company said."Being socially responsible is one of Gucci’s core values, and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals," Gucci president said in a statement .

DKNY

DKNY and Donna Karan are the latest fashion brands to join in the ever-growing list of labels who have shunned the animal-derived material for good in favour of ethical alternatives. DKNY and Donna Karan's parent company announced that the brands will be going fur-free in 2019 as a result of a long standing relationship with Humane Society International's American affiliate HSUS.

PRADA

From the release of its spring/summer 2020 collections in September, the Prada Group, which includes luxury fashion houses Prada and Miu Miu , will no longer permit the use of animal fur. “The Prada Group is committed to innovation and social responsibility, and our fur-free policy is an extension of that,” said Miuccia Prada via a statement. Prada joins a host of other brands that have vowed to go fur-free in the last few years, largely in response to changing consumer attitudes towards animal welfare . MODISH MAGAZINE

M

en’s clothing has seen an exponential rise in the recent years owing to the radical transformation the industry has witnessed. With the rampant rise in the use of different platforms of the social media and innovative fashion minds at work, the men’s clothing industry has more to offer than one can perhaps fathom.

Story by Roman

Understanding the difference between RTW, MTM and bespoke clothing is fundamental to the wardrobe that you aspire to put together for yourself as well as central to the right suiting guide. Here we talk about the distinguishing features of RTW, MTM and bespoke clothing.

Chapter III

DECODING RTW, MTM AND BESPOKE! by Meraki Brothers IN OUR THIRD CHAPTER OF THE SUITING GUIDE, WE DISCUSS THE MYTH BETWEEN READY TO WEAR (RTW), MADE TO MEASURE (MTM) AND BESPOKE MEN’S CLOTHING. OFTEN, MEN FALL PREY TO THE DECEPTION AROUND RTW, MTM AND BESPOKE MEN’S CLOTHING IN THE ABSENCE OF ADEQUATE INFORMATION ON WHAT EXACTLY CONSTITUTES A RTW, MTM AND BESPOKE.

READY-TO-WEAR As the name suggests, this type of a suit is a ready to wear garment that is available off the shelf. Such suits are designed by the in house designers of the store or brand that finds a display in a mannequin outside its store. Each suit is made according to a generic size and pre-established model, divided into various sizes, and usually manufactured by machines. The RT W kind of suiting of fers a range of benefits that make it the most common form of buying a suit. To begin with, considering each RTW suit is pre-made to a standard size and specification, you can purchase a suit off the rack that fits well, looks good, and feels comfortable. Since, you can take the suit home the very same day it is the go to option for any urgent needs. Given the mass production of suits falling under this category coupled with the growth in the menswear segment, the RTM kind of suits are sold at affordable rates. Having said so, the fabric and the lining in the RTM suits are not usually full canvas but are predictably glued together, often using heat. This method saves time and money but deprives the jacket of the support and the structure of the canvas. MADE-TO-MEASURE The MTM suit is an extension of the RTW suit in the sense that it is altered to reflect customer preference. Normally you visit the store (or may be even online in today's tech savvy era) and take a few measurements e.g. chest, waist, sleeve length, trouser length

70

MODISH MAGAZINE

fashion

MODISH

and trouser waist. You may also choose the fabric, style and other details before the order is sent to a manufacturing unit. The factories usually also use pre-defined patterns that are modified based on your measurements. The result is a suit cut to your personal dimensions. Made-to-measure clothes fit better than those of ready-made because they are tailored to the precise anatomical measurements. The starting price is closely comparable to that of suits in ready-to-wear, but they can also be more expensive depending on the quality of the chosen materials and the amount of customization. Essentially, the difference between a readyto-wear suit and a made-to-measure suit is that the latter offers you the flexibility to play around with a few details of the suit (like pockets, buttons and length amongst others). While you cannot immediately wear a MTM suit, it offers an array of advantages when seen in comparison with RTW.

Everything else being equal, a made-tomeasure garment will be more expensive than a ready-to-wear garment but cheaper than a bespoke one. BESPOKE TAILORING The term bespoke finds its origin in the word “bespeak which means, to speak for something. It describes a process of customization by an individual who decides every aspect of the garment thereby ensuring exclusivity. Bespoke,

involves creating a suit from scratch. The process typically involves having a discussion with your designer on various facets of your suit like fabric, design, color code, fittings etc. Bespoke suit is the ultimate expression of formal menswear and represents a new fad of the modern era, where ever y man can now have access to high quality tailoring, building his suit from scratch in a few easy steps and receive it conveniently at home. Undoubtedly, the bespoke clothing ensures a tailor made fit but requires a great deal of patience (multiple refinement meetings may be needed) and a heavy pocket to discharge the premium associated with it. The big difference between bespoke and made to measure is that you can choose any detail you want, any shape or form whereas, made to measure usually means you pick from a catalog. Next time you are faced with a situation that requires you to make a decision with respect to RTW, MTM and bespoke, keep these points in mind to enable you to take the right decision for your right suit!

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO HAVE A SAFE AND NUTRITIOUS PREGNANCY THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR CHILD IS TO MAINTAIN A WELL-BALANCED DIET BY EATING HEALTHY DURING PREGNANCY Story by Hanan Ismail

MODISH

A Sample Diet Chart That You Can Follow / refer to: • 2000kcal + 300 calories • Early Morning: nuts/ 3-4 almonds.

• Breakfast: dalia, poha, upma with vegetables / wheat flakes, oats / 2 small roots stuffed with vegetables / 2 eggs, vegetables. • Mid Meal: 2 fruits

D

t. Gurpreet Soni being a health and nutrition professional, finds that a good diet includes foods from all food groups to ensure proper nutrition for maintaining optimal health and well-being of the mother and child. While pregnancy is a normal alternative condition for a woman, it is stressful, which in-turn increases the nutritional needs.

• Focus on improving the quality of each calorie consumed. • Only an extra 300kcal and 15-20 grams of protein daily in the 2nd and 3rd trimester are needed during the pregnancy.

Here are some tips and guidelines that can be very essential for a proper maternity diet:

Ideally your plate should include: 1. 50% fruits and vegetables: eat 3-4 different types of fruits and vegetables a day. 2. 25% whole grains: may include multigrain chapatti, whole wheat pasta, oatmeal, wheat bread, brown rice, etc. 3. 25% lean protein: each meal must include protein to support the baby’s growth and development. Common sources include lentils, beans, cheese, milk, fish, eggs, meat, tofu, nuts, etc. 4. Fat consumption: 4 tsp of fat can be taken per day. 5. Dairy products: 3-4 servings of dairy per day may be beneficial, as calcium is good for the baby’s bones. Sources may include milk, curd/yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

• Eat vegetables with little oil to avoid excessive weight gain. • Consume colorful fruits and vegetables that are rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals and low in calories. • Opt for organically grown produce which are free from pesticides and chemicals. • Avoid processed foods, ready to eat foods or packaged food. • Avoid binging on food with high fat content that can cause unnecessary weight gain and difficulty in normal delivery. • Keep away from junk food, namkeen and biscuits. • Do not skip meals or fast during pregnancy. UNITING FASHION,

FAST. Story by Lalit Samantray

F

ast fashion is the current punch bag that all the environmentalists like to bash. There are good reasons to boycott, deplorable conditions to work in, poor wages and of course, wastage. But fashion as a whole has become the second most polluting industry in the world. So, is it fair to single out one part of it and consider its proscribing as ‘the’ solution?

There is another possibility as to why fast fashion has gained this notoriety in recent times. Fashion has always been exclusive and quite divisive. Go to any high-end mall, you would find the big names with an aura which can make any common man nervous to enter. What you won’t find is, them rubbing shoulders with sad retailers where everyone is welcome, but really who ‘wants’ to go there? Now, here comes fast fashion, like a magician selling similar pieces at one tenth of the price. They are giving access to luxuries to a larger crowd. Also, since they do not have to handcraft and do the quality control that luxury demands, they deliver faster. Hence, by the time the latest collection of big brands come down to the stores, they are already old. But because of this blow, even at limited budgets one can keep up with the restless pace of fashion. Despite the quirks it is important to recognize how fast fashion is establishing a democracy in fashion, famous for its unforgiving and elitist nature. So, is all the figurative uprising by media really changing anything? Is it possible it is all a product of the luxury conglomerates who are fighting to be the epitome of desire once again? For the better or worse, fast fashion continues to grow and people love this new found democracy

BACK TO THE FUTURE:

What the future of BEAUTY & FASHION INDUSTRY holds for US Let's take a sneak-peek into what beauty and fashion holds for us in the times to come.... AUGMENTED REALITY Amazon is the latest to use augmented reality for makeup products. Customers can now try out lip shades and other makeup through their app virtually before deciding to buy them. This feature is already in use my major beauty companies such as Estee Lauder and is yet to roll out in India. REFILL Olay has becomes the first global skincare brand to try out refillable packaging. With rising concerns for the environment, make up has become infamous for its wasteful packaging. In a three month test in the US and UK, Olay will monitor consumer reaction. This is an important move as it gives hope that many more brands will come with similar measures in the years to come. CLOTHES FOR INSTAGRAM The trend of the future is digital clothes. Scandinavian retailer Carlings released their first digital fashion collection. And guess what, it sold out! Though outlandish, it is not completely unprecedented. Gamers have been buying clothes for their avatars. This is quite an innovative approach as many people now get dressed simply for an instagram post and not be seen wearing the same outfit twice.

T

hrough fire, through ice, through stilted dialogue and superfluous torture scenes, we persevered. Sometimes, being a "Game of Thrones", aka GOT, fan is as exhausting as a triple-shift in the Night's Watch. GOT became a cult phenomenon and took over the television for years since its first season in 2011. But after almost a decade, the show came to an end this year leaving millions of fans around the world sad. But as we survivors pick our way through the embers of burnt-out narrative arc and character development, we look back fondly on memories and think It was all worth it.

1.

DAENERY'S AND DROGOS WEDDING: AZURE WINDOW, MALTA Perhaps the most scenic of the Game of Thrones filming locations is the Azure Window, a natural arch in the sea cliffs on the western side of Gozo punctured with small pools of turquoise water, where the wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen was filmed. If you’re adventurous you can scramble to the top or pick your way around its base that is popular with divers. 88

THE RED KEEP: LOVRIJENAC CASTLE, DUBROVNIK, CROATIA Fort Lovrijenac (also known as the St Lawrence Fortress) is a stunning fortress located outside the western wall of the Old city of Dubrovnik and is instantly recognisable as the Red Keep in King’s Landing. Down below in the little fish harbour the big battle of Blackwater Bay was conquered, when the fleet of Stannis Baratheon’s came to beat king Joffrey.

3.

THERMAL SPRING OR "JON AND YGRITTE'S LOVE NEST": GRJÓTAGJÁ CAVE, ICELAND Game of Thrones fans will surely remember the memorable season 3 "cave scene" when Jon Snow and Ygritte make love. The beautiful natural hot spring is located near Lake Mývatn and has been used as a bathing spot for locals for as long as anyone can remember. From the outside, it looks just like another rift in the cracky Icelandic ground, but once you find the entrance and your way down, there's a small pool of glimmering blue water waiting for you.

4.

ASTAPOR: ESSAOUIRA, MOROCCO From the desert to the coast of Morocco is where you’ll find Essaouira the modern day location of Astapor, home of the Unsullied. YOUR SKIN with the SPRITZ of NATURE

DIY Toner Dupes that you can simply make at home Story by Lalit Samantray

I

n the long list of skincare regime, toners have recently become a very important step. It can be used to restore the PH balance of the skin or set your mineral makeup. Or you can carry a small bottle to spritz your face during lunch hours to revive your tired skin. Quite versatile and simple, you must still be picky and choose the right toner for your skin type. Choosing the wrong ingredients can irritate your skin or even clog your pores resulting in acne. So, to make it simpler, here are few DIYs to make your own toner. Besides being able to customize it you can be sure of what you are putting on your face is pure and does not contain chemicals.

ACV & TEA TREE OIL TONER (Oily skin)

Step 1. Take 1 cup of Apple cider vinegar and two cups of filtered water. This ingredient is known to minimize large pores and take away excess oils while dissolving dead skin cells. Step 2. Add two drops of Tea Tree oil. With this ingredient a little goes a long way and is astringent and antibacterial preventing acne. Step 3. Add a few drops of lavendar essential oil to avoid the pungent smell

THE POTENT MIXTURE OF CUCUMBER AND HONEY (Dry skin)

Step 1. Take one cucumber and boil it in 1 cup of water for about 5 minutes. Strain the juice out removing any solids. Cucumber is refreshing and will rejuvenate dry skin which tends to look dull. Step 2. Add 1 teaspoon of honey Honey will moisturize skin and is full of antioxidants hence reducing ageing.

THE HEAVENLY COMBINATION: CHAMOMILE AND ALOE VERA (Normal Skin)

Step 1. Brew chamomile tea bag in a cup of water and let it cool down. Chamomile reduces inflammation and has antioxidants reducing ageing. Step 2. Add a tablespoon of slices of aloe vera by scraping it from the leaves. Aloe vera balances and minimizes oil production while hydrating skin. Put it in a bottle and spritz away the troubles of your skin. Do a patch test on your skin to access the compatibility. Most homemade toners last for a week when refrigerated. MODISH MAGAZINE
