June 29th, 2017 Dearest patients and friends, Over the past fifteen years, it’s been my privilege to serve the greater Rockland County community. You’ve shown great loyalty to our primary care practice, and for this reason, I’m pleased to announce some very exciting news. Starting in July of 2017, I will assume the position of Medical Director with MedRite Urgent Care at their new Spring Valley facility. Although it’s a significant change, I want my patients to know that you will receive the same quality care and individual attention as before. In fact, there are some big improvements coming your way. Located at 175 Route 59, Spring Valley, the full-service clinic is staffed by an extensive medical and administrative team. With their professional support, I can finally ensure better wait times and same-day results for a variety of diagnostic tests. From IV care and stitches to cutting-edge X-ray and other onsite technologies, one-stop convenience is the MedRite way. The move also means I’m finally accepting Fidelis for those who have long inquired (no need to change your PCP when visiting Medrite), in addition to all major insurances including United Healthcare, Empire, Oxford, GHI, Aetna, Cigna, and many. I look forward to helping your family grow even healthier and stronger in the coming years. I formally invite you to head over to our new office and get to know the amazing staff. Waiting to see you in Spring Valley! Sincerely,

Alian Mass Doctor Alain Mass, MD

As the daughter-in-law of a professional, accomplished, respected and moving Baal Tefillah, Chazan Chaim Greenfeld, A”H, I have come to appreciate music for what it should be doing, i.e. moving the innermost soul and not the outermost body. Kudos to Ruchy Reese, who, as she always does, tackled this issue with candor and honesty. She therefore was able to bring to us the true hashkafa and appreciation for the “real thing.” It is truly a chaval that this has been lost on much of today’s generation. In addition to the problem with the quality of the music at today’s simchos, we have the problem with the volume. How can any music, even those with soft and gentle notes, be pleasing to the ear when it is so loud that it can’t even be heard? This does not only take away the pleasure of what the music could be doing, but it also seriously harms the ears and hearing. I would like to make it known that there is an Earmuffs Gemach that loans out protection from overly loud noise. When worn, it protects the hearing of babies and toddlers. I hope parents will make use of this chesed, and avail themselves of this absolutely necessary item when taking their babies to anywhere where their ears will be assaulted by such dangerously high decibels. Thank you again to The Monsey View for bringing this topic to the public. I can be contacted through The Monsey View. Thank you, Mrs. C.R. Greenfeld

TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT I saw your article regarding fluoride and had only started reading it when someone misplaced or threw the magazine out. Can I please get a copy of the article? The topic is of great interest to me, and I was so excited to see that you wrote about it! As someone who has moved here recently from the city, I am perplexed about not having fluoride in the water and have consulted with my pediatric dentist and pediatrician in Monsey. I have received mixed advice. Some professionals are diehard fans of the fluoride tablets. Others are dead set against it. I appreciate that you give real issues a voice and hopefully, with enough information, I will be able to decide what is best for my children. I really enjoy The Monsey View every week! Nissi Unger

TANNERSVILLE TIP-OFFS I want to thank The Monsey View for the Excursions on Tannersville. Hunter Mountain and its surrounding areas are a majestic jewel in the Eibishter’s beautiful world, one that our family often gets to enjoy during the summer months. I wanted your readers to be aware that the Villa Vosilla Hotel has an actively used swimming pool visible from the road and to all who approach the hotel. Also, North Lake/ South Lake has a swimming area close to the boating. It can easily be bypassed by using the park map. A general rule of thumb when booking in an unfamiliar hotel is to inquire about the presence and location of a pool to avoid unpleasant surprises. An Upstate Reader

A SHAILA AND A DANGER Thank you for a great magazine which we all love. There is something for everyone in it. The Boggle, Excursions and the story are the first things we turn to, and the ads for sales, too. Since you are so widely read it would be a service to Klal Yisroel to bring up an important topic regarding the issue of taxis. Girls (and some very young ones) go into small cars with tinted windows with strangers driving them, sometimes even at night, in the dark. Is this normal? Do you know who the drivers are? It is yichud! It scares me to think how unsafe this is. We need to wake up the public to this very big shaila of yichud when traveling in a car alone in a taxi with a driver. As told to: Basya Lev

EVERY SUMMER WE GO UP to the same bungalow colony. One of the things I do there is to arrange cleaning ladies for some of the other women in my colony. Right before the summer began, someone called me. She had just had a baby and was pleading with me to send a cleaning lady to her. I told her I couldn’t help out at that moment, but if anything came up, I would give her a call. A few minutes later, my phone rang again. A different woman was calling to tell me that she had two cleaning ladies she was bringing up to the mountains, but she didn’t have a place for them to stay. Since I rent out a house for the cleaning ladies I use, I told her it would be no problem; she could use the place I was renting out for them as well. Before she hung up the phone, she gave me the name and number of the agency she uses. I called the agency and was able to get an additional three cleaning ladies for the summer and help out the first lady who had called me.

What’s black and white and colorful all over?

Becoming Weigh Smarter Compassion IN MY OPINION, WRITING an article on “compassion” seems a bit off-topic. How does compassion relate to nutrition? What does it have to do with health or weight loss? It may seem like there is no connection, but in the coming paragraphs I hope to clarify why I’m writing on the subject, and explain how I believe it relates to weight loss, nutrition and health. Chavy has given me permission to share her story, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. When I met Chavy for the first time, she told me she’d had it. “I’m coming to you as my last resort,” she said. Chavy didn’t believe she could ever lose weight and maintain it, but she felt so angry about her struggles that she knew she had to do something. Unfortunately, she often resorted to binge eating as a coping mechanism. “I try so hard to be careful for a few days or even a few weeks,” she told me. “And then, for some odd reason — I can’t even pinpoint what — I serve myself a piece of cake, some kugel or a scoop of ice cream, and I get so upset with myself.” Chavy thought she knew better than to indulge, and wondered why she couldn’t stick to a food plan. She figured something was wrong with her and assumed she was a failure. While nothing at all was wrong with her, she felt trapped in a cycle of binge eating and selfdoubt. She would promise herself that this would be the last binge, or the last time she would overeat, and then break down when she repeated these same patterns. When she tried a new diet, she hoped it would be the final solution. But for over 13 years, nothing seemed to

have changed. Chavy wanted to be healthy, especially since diabetes and high cholesterol ran in her family — she wanted to drop those 50 extra pounds, but she couldn’t seem to get it together. There was always something happening that got in the way of her diet. Does Chavy’s story sound familiar to you? If it does, can I please ask you to have more compassion for yourself? Did you know that the more compassion you have, the more likely you are to stick to a food plan and lose weight? Only you know your inner truth, and maybe — just maybe — you don’t really know which food plan to follow. So, the next time you overeat, can you give yourself some compassion? Do you have the skills in your arsenal to cope with stress? And most importantly, can you recognize that you are indeed a human being? Sometimes we make the same mistakes again and again until one day we finally get it right! I would never advocate for obesity or speak out against a healthy lifestyle, but compassion is healthy. And the more you put yourself down, the deeper you are going into that yo-yo cycle. Think of compassion for yourself as you would for others. Would you approach a person who’s going through a hard time and shove their problems

in their face, and still make them feel that they’re to blame? Would you dare approach someone with a family member who’s not well and casually say, “I hear your child/brother/sister is sick. Why doesn’t your family eat more healthily?”

Would you approach someone who’s struggling with their weight, pat them on the shoulder and say, “Hey, I see you put on some pounds. I guess you can’t control what you eat!”? These are indeed painful comments. And yet, we tell ourselves

these things over and over again. Why is it so difficult to have compassion for ourselves? Where is the sensitivity? And if you think selfcompassion is only self-directed, know that when we are nice to ourselves about our struggles, we are nicer to others as well.

Parshas B a l ak

By Malka Schneps

PARSHAS BALAK IS A PARSHA associated with Kiddush Hashem. The first association of this week’s Parsha with Kiddush Hashem is the modest way of life of the Bnei Yisroel, which prompted Bilaam to bless them: “Mah tovu ohalecha Yaakov mishk’nosecha Yisroel! – How goodly are your tents, oh Yaakov, your dwelling places, oh Yisroel!” (Bamidbar 24:5) The second association of this week’s Parsha is the incident in which Pinchas slew Zimri for his public transgression, thus ending the plague that had killed 24,000. There is another act of Kiddush Hashem recorded in this week’s Parsha, but it is one that most people have likely never learned about. At the beginning of this week’s Parsha, Balak dispatches elders from the people of Moav and Midian to ask Bilaam to come with them and curse the Bnei Yisroel. Bilaam responds that they should stay overnight, and he will give them an answer after Hashem speaks to him. (Bamidbar 22:8) In the very next posuk, Hashem addresses Bilaam, “Mi ha’anashim ha’eilah imach? – Who are these men with you?” (Bamidbar 22:9) Later, Hashem instructs Bilaam regarding these men: “Lo seileich imahem! – You shall not go with them!”(Bamidbar 22:12) The Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh ties these posukim together as follows. Hashem asked Bilaam who these men were as a way of pointing out to Bilaam that these men were not worthy of being sent with him. Hashem was trying to show Bilaam that Balak had insulted him by sending emissaries of such low

caliber. Bilaam failed to understand the message until Hashem added, “Do not go with them!” The Ohr HaChaim points out that Hashem may have concerned Himself with Bilaam’s honor as a reward for Bilaam having honored Hashem by telling the emissaries that his decision regarding whether he would join them would depend on whether Hashem would permit him to go. Bilaam could have simply asked them to give him until the next day to think it over, but he did not. Instead, he honored Hashem by telling the emissaries that his decision depended on Hashem’s decree. The Ohr HaChaim adds that Hashem does not withhold reward from any person, regardless of his religion — even one such as Bilaam! The Ohr HaChaim ties this in with the Gemara in Sanhedrin 96, where Hashem greatly rewards Nevuchadnetzar for having honored Hashem. Nevuchadnetzar had been a scribe for the King M’rodach, the king of Bavel. King M’rodach dispatched a letter to King Chizkiyah in which he blessed Chizkiyah before blessing Hashem. Nevuchadnetzar chased down the courier and took back the letter in order to correct this mistake against Hashem’s honor. In reward for what might appear to be a small act, Hashem took Nevuchadnetzar — a servant with no ties to the throne whatsoever — and made him king of Bavel. When we step back and consider the Ohr HaChaim’s statements, it really is astounding. Bilaam was a man who intended to go and curse Hashem’s

If this is how Hashem rewards rashaim such as Bilaam and Nevuchadnetzar for minor acts of Kiddush Hashem, can we imagine what rewards he has in store for us, who live lives of Kiddush Hashem?

chosen people — and Hashem rewarded him for having mentioned that he would await Hashem’s reply regarding the mission. Nevuchadnetzar chased down a courier to change a few words in a letter to ensure that Hashem received proper kavod, and was rewarded with the kingship. In this week’s Parsha, when Pinchas slew Zimri, he was rewarded with the kehunah. Pinchas had wanted to be a kohen, but it was impossible according to his lineage. Nevertheless, Hashem made him a kohen — nothing is impossible for Hashem! If this is how Hashem rewards rashaim such as Bilaam and Nevuchadnetzar for minor acts of Kiddush Hashem, can we imagine what rewards he has in store for us, who live lives of Kiddush Hashem? We should absolutely love and serve Hashem with no thought of reward. However, when we reflect on the great rewards Hashem bestows on even rashaim, and how Hashem has rewarded seemingly small acts with otherwise impossible rewards, it can lead us to reflect on Hashem’s greatness — which in turn can inspire us toward acts of Kiddush Hashem. Everyone has times when they feel alone, and when their actions seem insignificant. Reflecting on this week’s Parsha, we can see clearly that every word we utter is weighed and measured, and every act we perform is carefully recorded. Hashem cares about everything we do and say, and even if we make terrible mistakes in life, chas v’shalom, the reward awaiting us for all the good that we do will not be forgotten and cannot be diminished. May we all live lives of Kiddush Hashem, and in so doing, inspire others to do the same.

Pedestrian Safety Jumps to Top Priority in Ramapo After Route 59 Accident JUST HOURS BEFORE the serious crash in which a Monsey mother and her three children were seriously injured alongside of Route 59 across from the Town Square shopping center, the Ramapo Police Department announced that it would be holding an enforcement portion of the twoweek-long statewide pedestrian safety initiative. The campaign was held in conjunction with the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Department of Transportation and was designed to encourage pedestrians to obey “Walk/Don’t Walk” signals and to ensure that drivers yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. According to The Journal News,

a plainclothes police officer posed as a pedestrian at several busy intersections throughout the day on June 28th, stepping out into the crosswalk as cars approached. The vast majority of drivers failed to yield to the decoy officer, and approximately 40 tickets were given throughout the day, with many other drivers given warnings. “Almost every time, people blew right by him,” said Sergeant Chris Youngman of the Ramapo Police Department. “We’re not trying to trick or trap people. We’re trying to make the road safer.” In the aftermath of the accident, which is being attributed to road rage, town officials have been working furiously to effect immediate safety upgrades. Signs instructing drivers not

to drive on the shoulders of Route 59 will be erected in the coming weeks, in addition to stripes being painted on the shoulder where the devastating accident took place. Interim Town Supervisor Yitzy Ullman convened a meeting with state and local officials last week, calling for more sidewalks on Route 59 and suggesting the possibility of hiring pedestrian safety officers. A regional program that will bring safety improvements to the area, including 15,000 feet of sidewalks and over 60 high-visibility crosswalks, will not begin for another year. Some have criticized the state program, saying that Route 59 needs to be widened in order to alleviate congestion and promote pedestrian safety.

New Bridge to be Named for Former Governor Mario Cuomo THE NAME TAPPAN Zee Bridge will soon be disappearing from the roadways as the state legislature passed a last-minute bill at the end of the legislative session naming the new twin span the Mario Cuomo Bridge. The push to name the bridge for the former governor who died two years ago was spearheaded by his son,

Governor Andrew Cuomo. Ironically, Governor Mario Cuomo, who honored the late former Governor Hugh Carey by renaming the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel in his memory, was known to spurn recognition and accolades, reported The Journal News. Both Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Westchester County Exec-

utive Rob Astorino were vocal in their opposition to giving the new bridge Cuomo’s name. “Mario Cuomo has nothing to do with the Tappan Zee Bridge whatsoever, whatsoever with the building of the Tappan Zee Bridge, the original one, the new one; with the Westchester or Rockland,” said Astorino. “He has nothing do with anything, other than having been a governor.” The bridge currently bears the name of former Governor Malcom Z. Wilson, whose daughter Katharine Wilson Conroy, said that she was disappointed in the decision. “It make me very sad,” said Conroy. “It raises concerns, which are concerns that I have not as my father’s daughter, but as a taxpayer of the state of New York which is it seems to suggest that every sign that references the Tappan Zee Bridge will be changed.”

THE ROAD TO A SAFER RAMAPO Q&A with Aron Wieder, Rockland County Legislator BY: RUCHY REESE

Every community needs members who jump to action when there’s a need. Lucky for us, we’ve got more than one. Just this past week, several local activists showed their brilliant colors TOWN SUPERVISOR YITZCHOK ULLMAN, LEGISLATOR ARON WIEDER, when tragedy struck Monsey. Shortly after a woman and her AND MEMBERS OF THE RPD AND THE DOT JOIN TOGETHER TO ADDRESS three beautiful children were ravaged by a vehicle on the shoulSAFETY ISSUES IN RAMAPO. der of Route 59 near the Town Square shopping center, Aron Wieder was there, sharing with the wider world the safety issues that should have been taken care of long ago. Likewise, Town of Ramapo Supervisor, Yitzchok Ullman, immediately got to work arranging meetings to address and provide solutions for the road safety hurdles that drivers and pedestrians encounter. And it seems that because of their efforts and the positive government response, the tide is turning, ushering in a new era of a safer Ramapo.

WHAT WAS THE IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO THE ACCIDENT ON ROUTE 59? There was a huge public outcry over this incident, as no family should find themselves in a life or death situation because road upgrades haven’t been done. Baruch Hashem, government response was swift; Governor Cuomo’s office called me the very next day and promised to address the safety issues in Ramapo, and the DOT became actively involved as well. Three days after the event the Ramapo Police Department, the Department Of Transportation, and the new Town of Ramapo Supervisor, Yitzchok Ulman, met to join forces in instituting new safety measures for the community. WHAT KIND OF CHANGES CAN WE EXPECT IN THE COMING DAYS? Immediate effort will be invested into creating major changes on Route 59 in regards to installing sidewalks from Kennedy to Remsen where there are currently none, upgrading crosswalks and turning lanes, and installing a very sophisticated, high-tech traffic light system — the first of its kind. This new system will be the first in the state, and will monitor, in real time, traffic on the street. Amazingly, the behavior of the system will modify itself according to the ebb and flow of traffic as it’s happening, adjusting itself accordingly. There will be hub to monitor the system. Of course, there are other ways to enhance public safety as well, but those will take some time. WHO IS FUNDING THIS CHANGES, AND WILL IT AFFECT TAXPAYERS? These upgrades will be a state-funded project and will not cost taxpayers anything. The government has identified funds that are able to support these changes in the money allocated for the Tappen Zee Bridge and the roads that feed into it, like Route 59. They were able to allocate between $20– 30 million, and will start the project immediately.

66 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

WHEN CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE THESE CHANGES OCCUR? The time frame for such a massive project occurs in several stages. In the next couple of weeks, companies will be able to place their bids to become involved in the project. Over the summer the various bids will be reviewed, the companies researched, etc. Once all bids are in and the decisions are made about whom to hire, prep work will be done over the winter. Actual construction is forecasted for Spring 2018. It is also in the plans that most major construction will take place at night, so as not to impede traffic patterns during the day. OTHER THAN ROUTE 59, ARE THERE OTHER AREAS IN MONSEY THAT PRESENT SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERNS FOR DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS? Yes. Supervisor Yitzchok Ullman is heading a new committee in the Town of Ramapo that is working to identify the major problematic points throughout the unincorporated points of Ramapo, together with an engineering company. There are definite concerns over infrastructure and traffic, and these are under discussion. So far, 14–15 major points throughout Ramapo have been noted as needing to be addressed. This committee will meet often to discover solutions to these problems. IF A RESIDENT HAS A CONCERN ABOUT A STREET SAFETY ISSUE, WHOM SHOULD THEY CONTACT? In general, the person should contact the local municipality of the area in question if they have a concern, such as going to the Town of Ramapo or the Village of Spring Valley, etc. However, there are certain state and/or county roads where the state or county has sole jurisdiction, like Route 59.

MORNING INTRUDED. Henya was still so tired, sprinting out of bed, rushing into the early light. The world awoke to itself, the birds’ endless plans for the day, the ocean pulling itself in to allow the inhabitants of this world a little more Henya leaves Bianca with a terrible feelspace. Always ebbing and flowing, never a deing. She comes home, and hears her huspendable, controllable body, but tantruming and band talk about their shtetl falling apart. leaning in and pulling away — like Faivel was often doing. She clattered pan to grate, starting her dinner by sweating an onion. She’d forgotten to buff the bottom of the pan since last Shabbos, and its polished shine was dulled. So busy. When the nukerlech soup, potato knishes and chicken were duly done, she pinned Faivel down in his carriage with his multi-strap harness and headed out. Sometimes, the home was a shelter. Not today. Bianca was crazy. But Henya still wanted her. Still wanted the closeness. And something had happened to her husband, that the light in his plans went dark. She walked by small neat patches of grass. Why did these houses not Sometimes, the houses, hold its inhabitants close? And what did Tilla want? She’d finally found peace in this earthy town, and home is a sheleverything was changing again. “Bashefer?” ter. Not today. The trees swayed in supplication. “Please help me. All we are trying to do is rebuild what we had and lost, but we have nothing. No guidance. No elders.” Her grandmother. She’d had the softest hands. And more. She was soft of heart. Henya had once told her neighbor, Basya’la Albert, “Nobody will marry you.” Basya’la had run home crying and Henya, realizing how ruthless she’d been, had been afraid. She had been afraid to tell her mother. She had been afraid to live with who she was, who she was becoming. So she had gone to Babba’leben. “Babba?” she had told her over a zserbo

slice. “I told Basya’la that nobody will marry her.” Her grandmother had laughed gently, her head lifting up into the window glare. “Sometimes we say things we don’t realize will hurt someone, until after we’ve said it,” she had said. “So now we just have to clean up. How will you clean this up?” Henya had found Basya behind her house, near the willow tree. “I’m sorry,” Henya had told her. But how right she had been. Basya hadn’t made it to the chuppah because the Nazis, they got her first. Ruthless Henya. Hurting friends. If only she had a grandmother who could laugh it all away. If only someone could tell her Bianca wasn’t her fault. Or that it was — and how to clean it up. Not everything could be cleaned. Bloodstains. Did a person as tainted as she; did she even deserve to ask? Surely the Eibishter was with her. Even with her. “Henya, we are all headed to a place of love.” This shtetl… this friendship with Bianca. Love? To plunk her down in the middle of nowhere and say, build, rebuild. It was like on the night of the Churban. When the Eibishter bade the balking sun: go out, and shine your

march light. It was all so much. Even her husband, who had rebuilt, was ready to leave it all behind. It meant that nothing was possible. She kicked sand, her carriage ground sand. Here were the breakers, rocks as large as walls. She walked closer. But seeing how the water splashed, crashed and hurtled itself like it was intent on hurting itself or others rather than recede, she turned away. She came round the water into the mainland, the trees, the houses and Tilla, standing on her porch. She was holding a rug, banging it viciously against the red wooden rails of her porch, until dust, maybe the rough hairs of the weave itself, rose in clouds that billowed both sides of her house robe. “Ah gitten.” A friend. One living friend. “How was your trip?” Tilla asked, always thoughtful, always remembering. Tilla watched her friend’s face. Rug still gripped under knuckles. Henya tried nonchalance. “Baruch Hashem.” “We’re allowed to tell Hashem we want something… better,” Tilla said. Henya’s face hardened, to keep her features in place. But her eyes. Her terribly disloyal tear ducts. “I can’t do it anymore,” she blurted. “And what is it you wanted to tell me yesterday?” “You can’t do what?” “Let’s talk about… what you wanted to say last night,” Henya said. “You can’t talk about it? Is that what you can’t do anymore?” Tilla asked. “I think so,” Henya pretended. “Was it about Herschlag?” “Yes.” “What do you think about it?” Henya wanted to know. She stood, leaning on the green-painted porch rail, its veneer shining.

72 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“Let me tell you something,” Tilla said. “We’ve survived. We’ve made it through so much. We braved the disdain of others, who said we could never make it here, so far away. If you think this is the last war we’ve waged… The yetzer hara is always here. This is an invitation. It’s an invitation to come together and encourage each other.”

ly. “You?” Henya regarded her. “I thought… you wanted to tell me that our town is bleeding away and that—” “It is. We are. We’re bleeding.” And there had to be more than one way to bleed. Of course there was. There were so many ways to kill a nation. “But if you are leaving, why do you care?” “I don’t want to leave. I don’t. and I suspect that Hershlag doesn’t want to either. Maybe we won’t have to.” “But they have to, don’t they? Everyone has the right to choose a community. If it doesn’t work… doesn’t a person have the right to leave?” “Our shtetl is small and young,” said Tilla. “and like raising a child,

If only she had a grandmother who could laugh it all away. If only someone could tell her Bianca wasn’t her fault. She dropped the rug in front of her door and stamped it in place. “But do you think a person who leaves… makes the entire town more susceptible?” Henya walked up the three small steps. She spotted a chair at the other end of the porch. “The entire town?!” “Yes. As in, is this the start of everyone leaving? Is this but a symptom? That we all can’t do it anymore? That it’s too much?” Holding Faivel, she felt her world blacking out so she gripped the table, steadying herself. “There is no such a thing. Everyone does what they need to do.” Confusion. Why was fog her most dominating experience? “I’ll tell you a little secret,” Tilla said. “I thought of moving too.” “What?” Henya breathed deep-

we can raise our shtetl. But we must change. We must. Because the way it is now… it will fall apart.” “What? What do we need to do?” She was exhausted, heated up, desperate to make it okay. Why were all the problems she’d left behind following her along like a shadow? “We are not living alone,” Tilla said. “This world is an interdependent one, where one hand washes the other.” “Some of it affects us in ways that the other person can’t even imagine.” To be continued... Baking with Kids By Draizy Wercberger

Summertime means longer afternoons and later bedtimes. When the weather isn’t ideal for being outside, set aside some time to bake together with the children. The smiles on their faces will make the mess all worth it‌

THE MONSEY VIEW / 77

FRUITY PEBBLE COOKIES The kids’ favorite cereal in a yummy cookie dough! Fun to eat but even more fun to bake together with the children.

INGREDIENTS: 1 ½ sticks margarine 1 cup sugar 1 pack instant vanilla pudding 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 ¼ cups flour 2 cups fruity pebbles

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. Cream margarine and sugar in a bowl. Add pudding and eggs. When well-combined, add the rest of the ingredients except for fruity pebbles. When all ingredients are well-incorporated, add the fruity pebbles. 3. Drop by the heaping tablespoon onto parchment paper-lined cookie sheets. Bake for 10–12 minutes.

BLONDIES WITH ADD-INS This recipe is extremely versatile. The add-in options are endless. You can never go wrong with classic chocolate chips, but my favorite way to make this cake is to break sandwich cookies into small pieces and drop it into the batter at the end. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup oil 2 cups brown sugar 3 eggs 1 ½ tablespoons vanilla sugar 3 cups flour ¾ teaspoon baking soda 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. Mix oil, sugar, eggs and vanilla in a large bowl. 3. When well-incorporated, add all the rest of the ingredients. 4. Spread out onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. I find the easiest way to do this is to wet your hands and just spread it out with your wet hands. 5. Bake for 20–25 minutes. While still hot, cut into bars.

OPTIONAL ADD-INS: Chocolate chips

Colorful lentils

Chopped nuts

Crushed pretzels

Broken sandwich cookies

STAINED GLASS COOKIES Sugar cookies turn magical when their centers are cut out and filled with chopped hard candies. As the dough bakes, the candy melts into a dazzling stained glass window, creating a colorful confection. This is an awesome activity for children to do as they watch with amazement as the chopped candy spreads into a beautiful center. INGREDIENTS: 2 sticks margarine 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 cups flour 1 pack colored lollies, crushed into small pieces

DIRECTIONS: 1. Mix margarine, sugar and egg. When combined, add all the rest of the ingredients except for the crushed lollies.

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

2. Roll the dough out onto a parchment paper and cut into desired shapes. Cut a circle (or a smaller version of the same shape you are making your cookies) out in the center and place some of the crushed lollies inside. Place the parchment paper onto a cookie sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes. Beware that the candies will be extremely hot when they are removed from the oven, so let cool completely before removing from parchment paper.

n 2017, a backyard is something no longer taken for granted, even up here in the suburbs. Those who are fortunate to have their home surrounded by a soft carpet of grass know what a wonderful play area that provides the kids with. You can never go wrong with a basic swingset (not that today’s swingsets are basic, with options of rock walls, ball pits, the most unique and fun swings, different exciting slides and cozy little rooms) but if you want to purchase something at a smaller scale or you have just a little green area to fill up, here’s a collection of exciting paraphernalia for healthy summer fun in your very own backyard.

SAFETY IN YOUR FUN ZONE Backyard jungle gyms and swing sets are a thrill every child dreams of, but they do come with their own element of danger. Every year, roughly 50,000 home playground-related injuries occur in the U.S., with about 80% of those occurring from falls. A handful of fatalities occur as well, mostly due to entanglement in ropes, cords or from inappropriate clothing that contain drawstrings or items worn around the neck, or due to moving parts. These tragic happenstances can many times be prevented with a little knowledge and extra effort when installing your outdoor toys. Here are some tips: • Place your playground far away from roads and driveways in an open space at least six feet from other structures and obstacles such as tree branches and wires. • Install equipment on level ground to prevent tippage. • Do not place metal equipment in direct sun in order to prevent serious burns. • Put down some sort of shock-absorbing soft flooring. Consult with an expert to learn the safest option. Never put loosefill flooring, such as mulch, on top of hard surfaces like cement or concrete. • Keep quiet play areas such as sandboxes away from high energy areas like swing sets. • Make sure that your equipment is installed properly, by an experienced expert. • Avoid heavy wooden or metal swings to prevent injury. Stick with plastic or other lightweight materials. • If using a swing with a rope attachment, ensure that the rope is inseparable to reduce strangulation risk. Never let a child play with rope or string! • Maintain your swing set by checking nuts and bolts for tightness and all parts for signs of wear and tear. Do this twice monthly. • Never let your child wear a helmet while playing on equipment. The helmet increases the radius of the head, creating a greater chance of entrapment, while the chin strap presents a strangulation hazard. • Never lead a toddler inside a swing alone or without safety restraints. • Always supervise your kids! For more information about safety when planning your outdoor fun zone, please see the Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook available at https:// www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/324.pdf

In Defense of a Little Bit of Dirt By: P. Samuels

CHILDREN OF THE WORLD, rejoice! Prominent scientists and eminent medical researchers have come to the same conclusion: Not only is it okay to play a little in dirt, but getting dirty may actually be

98 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

good for your health. As with all medical research that will eventually affect humans, experiments were done on mice. As much as we, especially women, dislike mice, the little critters are often

used by scientists for proving or disproving medical theories. Mice injected with various microbes and bacteria were less likely to contract certain diseases as explained below. Most of civilization has benefited from medical advances such as antibiotics, vaccines and sterilization, which have greatly reduced the incidence and severity of life-threatening infections. However, modern society has seen the proliferation of non-life threatening, yet serious diseases in children, such as asthma, allergies and inflammatory bowel disease, and metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

To explain it as simply as possible, a baby is born with certain microbes, which are basically immature immune cells. These were placed in the lining of the stomach to help fight disease. When bacteria is introduced into the system, these cells react to them, changing, multiplying and even moving to other parts of the body to “train” the cells there to fight disease. If the cells are not exposed to this reaction, the immune system becomes lazy and sluggish, unable to fight disease properly. A simplistic comparison would be to use the advice given regarding our muscles and our brain: Use it or lose it. Of course, there are other factors to consider. The overuse of antibiotics is one. The lack of proper diet with the proliferation of junk food is another. However, this article’s emphasis is on the hows, whys and whens to let our children sometimes get dirty. As with everything else in today’s world, we Yidden have a slightly different take on this whole matter. First of all, there’s the wellknown admonition that a talmid chocham must always make sure that his clothing is clean. Then there’s Shabbos and Yom Tov to consider. It is actually a halacha that one has to change to clean clothing l’kavod Shabbos. Here are some practical ways to let your child enjoy the healthy aspects of getting dirty, without in any way compromising on values: NO ONE IS TELLING YOU to let your little girl jump in a mud pud-

if she is young enough). Instead of fretting and yelling at her to get out of the mud, grab your camera. There’s the making of a great photo op, with a resulting prize-winning picture. BABIES BELONG ON THE FLOOR. Save the white stretchie from Tante Mirel for another occasion and dress him in practical clothing, but don’t fret if his little hands get a bit dirty and then find their way into his mouth. Remember: You’re “exercising” his immune system.

ALLOWING YOUR CHILDREN TO PLAY in a sandis also good, healthy But there’s always a Sunday box fun. You may want to suor a Monday, and she could pervise younger children, as washing sand out of curly be wearing her Crocs. hair is no fun, as any mother who had that job can attest. However it’s an opportudle while wearing white tights and nity for kids to learn how to share her patent leather Shabbos shoes. tools, how to improvise when they But there’s always a Sunday or a don’t have actual sand toys, and it’s Monday, and she could be wearing a great way to foster imaginative her Crocs, and dark tights (or none play.

ADDING WATER TO SAND, with the resulting mud, is a basic, simple, first lesson in practical science.

Of course we have to set limits and boundaries. That’s the job of us mothers. For that, there is the good old-fashioned item called “soap.” Stay away from all the antibacterial soaps, which can do more harm than good. In fact, the government recently banned some of the chemicals in antibacterial soaps. Keep a simple bar on the bathroom sink, and insist that everyone wash their hands before coming to the table. To sum up, I am not suggesting that you throw out all of your principles regarding cleanliness. Be the balabusta you’ve always strived to be, using tips and strategies you’ve learned and perfected over the years... Just let loose a little bit. Dress your children in practical play clothing, and save the fancier stuff for Shabbos and special occasions. Don’t panic just because the children get a bit dirty. It won’t, chalila, harm anyone, and will hopefully result in happier, healthier, less stressed children.

IT’S HARD TO RESIST the allure of a soap bubble. Those iridescent spherical orbs have the ability to mesmerize and to turn even the stodgiest curmudgeon into a kid again as they try to blow the perfect bubble and then watch it drift off in the breeze into realms unknown. Yup, bubbles are truly magical. While bubbles might take us back to the days of our childhood, they have been fascinating humanity for far longer than any of us have been alive. A portrait of two boys blowing bubbles painted by Caspar Netscher in approximately 1670 graces the collection of the National Gallery in London, while a famous 1730s Jean Chardin oil painting titled Soap Bubbles hangs in Washington D.C.’s National Gallery of Art. Sir Isaac Newton was also known to have explored the scientific aspects of bubbles, but

for most of us, bubbles are fun and a true sign of summer. Soap bubbles are formed when a very thin film of soapy water forms around a pocket of air, creating a hollow sphere. Take a bubble wand, a piece of wire twisted into a closed

As a result, the solution stretches, creating a perfect sphere. Because the air is trapped

tunity to touch. Because bubbles are comprised of soap and water, a bubble can only last as long as it contains a sufficient amount of moisture. As bubbles float through the air, the water in their skin begins to evaporate, causing the skin to get thinner and

thinner until it eventually pops on its own. Exposure to anything dry, including grass, a person, a wall or most other things will have the same effect on a bubble. Additionally, contact with anything sharp enough to pierce a bubble’s thin skin will also cause it to pop, since it frees the air trapped inside the bubble. No matter what shape your wand may be, or what shape your bubble appears to be taking as it is formed, soap bubbles are always round once they are fully formed because once a bubble is sealed, the tension in the skin of the bubble causes it to shrink to a sphere, the smallest possible shape that can accommodate the volume of air trapped inside the bubble. Bubbles that bump into other bubbles can take on slightly different shapes, with two equally sized bubbles sharing a flat wall between them, while smaller bubbles may be swallowed up inside a larger one. Even if your bubble solution is clear, a rainbow of color will still be visible when the light is reflected by the surface of a bubble. When first formed, bubbles have more of a greenish or bluish tinge, but as the bubble floats and the moisture content in the skin begins to evaporate, bubbles have more of a pink or purple hue. As a bubble’s surface continues to thin even further, it will take on a yellow or blackish tone, a sure sign that it is about to pop. BUBBLES HAVE come a long way over the years, progressing from the 25-cent plastic bottles of pink and blue bubble solution of my youth to an entire army of products that grace store shelves today. From bubble machines that produce an endless stream of bubbles, to toy lawn mowers that blow bubbles as your toddler pushes them over your grass, to the why-didn’t-they-think-of-this-sooner, messfree, no spill bubble tumblers, bubbles are a big business. Whether you choose to go with a fun-filled bubble bath to get your kids clean at the end of a hot summer day or take the family to see a live bubble show, there is no denying that bubbles are fascinating and the perfect activity for kids of all ages.

Of course you can go to the store and buy bubbles and bubble wands, but making them at home can be lots of fun for you and your children as you explore the possibilities.

Basic Bubble Solution: 2 ½ cups water 1 cup dishwashing soap ¼ cup corn syrup

Bubble Wands from Simple to Creative: • Use a single straw to blow a basic bubble or connect a few straws together to create geometric shapes and oversized spheres. Want to get even more creative? Gather about six or seven straws into a bundle and tape them together. Dip the end of your straw bundle into the bubble solution and blow for a mega fun stream of mini bubbles. • Twist ties, coat hangers, just about any wire and pipe cleaners can be twisted in virtually any shape for great bubble fun. When using pipe cleaners, slide a few beads onto the remaining length of the pipe cleaner to give the handle a little extra body. • Cut off the end of an empty water bottle and remove the cap. Dip the now cap-less narrow end of the bottle into the bubble solution and blow from the bottom end of the water bottle. • Poke a hole into the side of a plastic drinking cup about one-third of a way from the bottom and fill the cup with bubble solution until just below the hole, sticking a straw through the hole. Tilt the cup slightly, so that the straw is immersed in the bubble solution, and then start blowing a full stream of bubbles. Be sure to tell your kids not to suck in on the straw, because I can tell you that I remember very clearly from my childhood that bubble solution tastes really bad. • Want some major wow? Make a really big batch of bubbles, pour them into a small wading pool and have your child stand on a small stool in the pool. Take a hula hoop, put it over your child and lower it around your child into the solution. Raise the hula hoop slowly over your child’s head for a life-sized bubble.

I

was enjoying myself at the shmorgasbord of a neighbor’s chasunah when I noticed my mechutan on the other end of the room. I went over to say hello and we quickly got to our favorite topic of conversation: our children. “I’m worried about them,” I told him, “It’s already a couple of years and no children. I don’t want to be that nosy father and ask my daughter what’s going on… do you know anything?” “No,” he sighed, “I’m worried too.” We sat quietly in our thoughts for a few moments and then suddenly, a brainstorm struck. “Mendy,” I said excitedly, “How would you like to be my new partner!” “Huh?” He looked quite confused. “Listen,” I said, “You know that organization Tehillim Kollel, you know the one with all the stories about the Yeshuos people receive?” “I’m not sure,” he responded. “C’mon,” I said, “They are a really big organization. They have locations at the Tzions of tzaddikim, like in Meron or the Shlah. They have minyanim of men that recite the entire Sefer Tehillim early in the morning, a special time of day.” “Okay, yeah sure, I think I have heard of them. So, nu, what about them?” “Well,” I continued, “What if we signed up, b’shitfus, for membership for our children. I pay half, you pay half, and together, in that zchus, may our children merit their own!” “Hmm, that is a really beautiful idea! Let’s call them right now.” And with credit cards in hand, we made the call. B’shitfus, may we be zoche to eniklach together.

KUPAH SHEL TZEDAKAH THEN AND NOW B Y : R A B B I F. M A S H I N S K Y

“Minhag Yisroel Torah” is found commonplace in the Shulchan Aruch and commentaries. Customs have taken a vital role in Jewish history. Some customs border on Halacha, while others have entered into our religion by tradition, legacies handed down from generation to generation with origins unkown. Certain traditions require to be upheld, even if one’s life is threatened, while others have been forgotten with the winds of time. We find many stories in Chazal how Yidden risked life and limb to uphold Minhagim. In the story of the Churban, quoted in the Gemara Gittin and Midrash Eichah, we find a minhag to plant a tree when a child is born to be used later as the Chupah poles at the same child’s wedding. When the axle of the chariot belonging to a Roman princess broke, her men attempted to secure it using a tree designated for such a Chupah. The Jews, zealously trying to uphold this custom, attacked the princess’s entourage which ultimately caused a fierce Roman backlash, eventually destroying one of the last vestiges of a Jewish settlement in Eretz Yisroel. One of these customs that seem to have been lost from our history is the “Community Kupah Shel Tzedakah”. Many chapters of our Shulchan Aruch and Rambam are dedicated to the Laws of charity for the poor. They are based on many Sugyos Hashas. In fact, both the Rambam and the Tur proclaim that throughout history it was unheard of that in a city where Jews live there should not be such a Kupah. The Gemara states that one is not permitted to live in a city that lacks a Kupah shel Tzedaka. Throughout history we find Jewish communities from Spain to Russia, large and small, that had some form of Charitable Society. The SMA”G (13th century) quotes that while visiting Spain he saw the Gabbai Tzedaka make the rounds daily and then distributing the proceeds on Erev Shabbos. Even relatively small communities had such collections. In the year 1750, Verona, a relatively small Jewish community, had fifteen relief societies to help the poor and indigent. Jewish hospitals, clinics, burial societies, free loan societies, guest hostels, Bikur Cholim organizations, and local charities for the poor was popular in many cities throughout the diaspora. Virtually, wherever Jews lived, from London in the west, to St. Petersburg in the east and beyond, there was always a structured charity fund which was directed by the Rav or the elders of the community.

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

This custom based on Halacha seemed to continue until World War 2. With the rise of Hitler and the Nazis YM”S, with their intent to destroy any trace of Jewish life, these organizations were their first target. Since then, within the structured and central community, Tzedaka, which was a vital and integral part of Jewish life and legacy, seized to exist. After the tragic Churban, as one third of our Jewish nation was decimated, Yidden slowly picked themselves up from the ashes and crematoriums and began to restore Jewish life in new their new countries here in the United States and abroad. With Hashem’s help we have merited a renaissance of epic proportions. Jewish communities, cities, and towns have grown spiritually and in population greater than cities in pre-war Europe, Kein Yirbu. Yeshivas and Kolelim here and in Eretz Yisroel, rival the Yeshivas of yore. One of the noticeable changes that have taken place in post-war Jewish life, is the lack of structured centralized Rabbanus and community organization in our cities and towns. Barring a mere few Jewish centers worldwide, most Jewish communities are comprised of a group of haphazard Shuls, Batei Midrashim, sects and neighborhoods that form an in cohesive Jewish community. The common thread between all these communities is the lack of a community Kupah shel Tzedaka, where cash stipends are dispensed to the poor of the community on a regular basis as the Shulchan Aruch dictates. The Monsey community is privileged to be one of the only communities worldwide to have such a Kupah. In the summer of 1957 when Monsey was a fledgling Torah community, Kupath Ezrah was established. Rabbi Hershel Mashinsky ZT”L together with his partner Mr. Sam Nussbaum A”H , with a burning desire in their hearts and souls, began a Tzedaka fund to help the needy neighbors of their community . The core principals of this fund was to have a Kupas Aniyim based on the dictates of the Shulchan Aruch, led, advised, and endorsed by all the Rabanim of the community. Quietly and discreetly millions of dollars have been distributed to poor and disadvantaged families of the greater Monsey community, in the form of monthly stipends. To be Continued….

SOFT PLAY AREA

Three great rides delight little (and big!) riders, especially when there’s limitless entry to every one of them, all day long. There’s the train roller coaster that’s loads of fun, even for the adults. There’s the airport, with airplanes that hover up in the air for a bird’s-eye view of Turtleboo. Even better, these little planes will soon be able to be controlled by their riders, who will determine if they want to fly high or low and when to blink their LED lights. Then there’s the Himalaya, the fast twisting ride, that goes both forward and backward for circles of fun.

The soft play area is a huge three-story structure of pure fun. Tunnels, a worm cage, slides (open slide! drop slide! spiral slide!), gravity tunnels, ropes and a rock wall connect and intersect to form a thrilling maze to jump, crawl and bounce in. There are also relaxing spots to rest in, like the delightful ball pit and the cozy clubhouse, where children can recharge for another round of fun. There’s a separate soft play area for toddlers, where children under two can bounce around in age-appropriate equipment.

RIDES

THE MONSEY VIEW / 113

Four sharp shooters with targets at different levels have visitors aim foam balls and try to score big. No running around collecting those balls when it’s time for another round, as the sliding nets will bring them right back to the players. The Ballocity will be up and running in a few weeks.

ARCADES 114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

BALLOCITY The arcade features a delightful collection of games for kids of all ages. The favorite one seems to be the tractor that digs up kosher treats for the kids to collect as shining pairs of eyes watch. The head-bopping one is pretty high up on the list, too, as the kids bang-bang with the big plastic hammer. These are followed by an assortment of really fun games, with prizes that can be won and loads and loads of tickets to be earned. It’s on to the redemption center from there where kids are treated to an amazing selection of prizes and gifts to choose from, including kosher treats. There’s a lovely collection of Turtleboo brand items, ranging from stuffed turtles to adorable Turtleboo umbrellas. Every child goes home with a prize!

VIRTUAL GAMES A truly novel treat awaits you in this game room, where children tap-tap with their feet on the floor to play interactive life-sized games. There’s an assortment of 25 fun activities — even piano playing among them — that get changed every two minutes for hours of fun.

Party time at Turtleboo is something special. The three beautiful party rooms, with speakers that can connect to your music via bluetooth, seat between 25 to 60 guests each for birthday parties and events to remember. Turtleboo offers a variety of amazing birthday packages with lots of surprises and perks for every single guest to match your crowd, your preferences and your budget.

PARTY ROOMS

This is one place where the children and their parents will not stay hungry. You can serve lunch or supper — or both — to your brood on Turtleboo’s premises. The dairy restaurant, under the Hashgacha of Rabbi Yechiel Steinmetz, has a delicious menu of pizza, fries, slush in six different flavors, packaged cookies and danishes, as well as salads, coffee and hot foods for the adults.

CONVENIENCE AND SAFETY 118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

FOOD At Turtleboo, your convenience is a priority. There are plenty of restrooms on premises, with a netilas yadayim sink and a family changing and feeding room for visitors’ convenience. There is also a lounge room with comfortable couches, with cell phone chargers and free wifi, where parents can relax while their children have a great time. In an event that a child opens a door, an alarm will sound, in addition to other safety measures Turtleboo employs to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable stay.

Chapter 3

I HAVE A WISH BOX CALLED “Gesher’s Future.” While bathing the kids, cooking for Shabbos or folding laundry, I throw in a thought, an idea, of what Gesher Hachaim will look like one day down the road. I write these thoughts on old envelopes, scraps of construction paper or newspaper clippings. Then I aim for the box, make the leap and watch it disappear into the wonderful future. I know it isn’t worth anything right now, yet I would never consider selling my wish box even for a million dollars. It contains far more valuables than a box its size and durability can actually handle, but it is a miracle

120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

box, and each of its little miracle contents will come true — even if it doesn’t seem so now. I just know. While sweeping the floor one day, I accidently tripped over my wish box and all my wishes came tumbling out. The one named “Girls’ Program” came scooting first, followed by its cousins named “Aqua Therapy” and then “Horse Ranch.” Standing over it in my snood, with a broom and dustpan in either hand, I knew they were surreal ideas at that moment; ideas who were frightened out of their wits to see me looking over at them like that. So I thought I would ruffle their little hair and then place them gently back into their tiny home... until they would be ripe enough to come live life in the openness of our world again. But then, as I was bending down to reach out to them, they stretched their miniscule arms as if to show off all they have to offer. And suddenly, I envisioned a sprawling horse ranch, with on-ground equine therapy taking place, building balance and confidence in lost souls. An indoor therapy pool, stimulating all under-stimulated senses. A sensory room, gym and classrooms furnished to fill the needs of the little people they would hold. I saw little boys and girls petting goats, grooming sheep, finally feeling needed... and happy. A secure haven they can call their very own, to grow and prosper into the young adults of tomorrow. And then another idea caught my eye, one that would dedicate all this beauty in the name of someone’s family member, so that the promising future these children will, b’ezras Hashem, have will carry the legacy of those who gave in chesed and good-heartedness. I saw “Fundraising Event” and its neighbor “Working with the Higher-uppers Within the East Ramapo School District.” There was “Putting Together a Team of Advocates to Change the Board of Ed Rulings” and “Form a Support Squad of Monsey View Supporters”... The ideas kept pouring out like a leak in a city’s water system, a crack in an oil well. And I came to terms with the fact that I would never be able to put Humpty Dumpty back together again; the ideas were loose and needed nurturing. At that moment I knew the time had finally come to give them a bigger home. A larger space to flutter around. To get out there, be nourished and grow into what they were intended to be. To utilize their names, build the foundation of a new environment for those they had come to help. And so, I gathered them all in my hands, those who Perry Kiszner is the mother of Chaim and the founder of The H.O.P.E. Oasis, a not-for-profit organization that is working towards educating Monsey's extraordinary children who are falling through the cracks within the mainstream system. had hidden under the oven or in the corner of the pantry door, those who needed a bit of coaxing from behind the trash can... and I carried them outside, to the center of the wind’s rise and fall. With a prayer on my lips, I finally let them fly away. Far into the heavens above, out into the air particles around me. And I watched them twirl in the spring breeze, creating butterflies in the sun’s shadow. Those little dreams sent their transcripts of hope out into the world. We’ll get there. We will make this happen. These dreams have been embraced by those who’ve see their vitality, from those who gave of their time to put together a mission statement to others who filmed and photographed, so that we can get this journey out into the open, where those little scraps of construction paper now lie. And with Hashem’s everlasting help and guidance, and your encouragement, my dear supporters, Gesher Hachaim, or its new name, yet unknown, will shine a light in the lives of our precious children. If would you like the z’chus of supporting Gesher Hachaim and enabling these special children to reach their full potentials, please visit https://thechesedfund. com/cause/chaim-s-special-fund or reach out to Perry Kiszner at the contact info listed in her bio.

Days to Serenity

NOTE

For those of you who did not have a chance to start the organizing last week, in the post-school, pre-camp hecticness, it’s not too late to jump onto the bandwagon! We are starting Day #1 this week (last week’s dates were mistakenly printed in the previous issue). If you are one of the conscientious balabustas who completed their to-do list, enjoy your week off. One day at the pool and one day at the ice cream store is what you get to do this week.

HI EVERYBODY! So who’s ready for some cleaning to sit on the lawn chair and shmooze with the neighbors and do absolutely nothing for an entire afternoon? Okay, just a thought. The hot topic in our neighborhood is how to pretend we’re in the country without being in the country. Technically, my city friends claim that Monsey is the country, so there you have your answer. Until they move here and they see that it is not. One of my camp friends from Williamsburg came to my house one Shabbos. On Friday night, she asked, “So where’s the big ocean?” I said, “Huh?” She said, “Y’know, the beach.” I said, “Huh?” She looked at me like I had two horns (with the hairdos that were in style then, I probably had one horn for sure). “The water, the water!” She said, and then total understanding dawned in my teenaged brain. “You mean Suzanne Lake?” “Yes, yes! Let’s go!” And we went. End of story. I will not elaborate on the scene in which she saw the actual ocean. Uh, I mean beach. Umm, sorry, Suzanne Lake.

THURSDAY, JULY 6 FRIDGE So let’s talk fridges! It’s Thursday, and I can’t wait to empty my fridge and make it look like the ones on sale in the department stores. But before we start, I will tell you that it’s not possible, so that image needs to be adjusted. Here’s why! Your fridge is being used by, baruch Hashem, many individuals. Your fridge has actual food and leftovers! On Shabbos it is packed, and by Monday you’re searching for that elusive “good” thing in there. So, baruch Hashem, it will not look like an advertisement. So I promised you no heavy-duty cleaning! Here’s the ABCDs of it. • Empty the fridge. The drawers and shelves

124 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

• • • • •

should be rinsed with warm, soapy water and air dried. Wash down the fridge with Soft Scrub and warm water. Before putting the food back, discard outdated things and rotten fruit. Put everything back neatly. Baking soda is a great way to keep the fridge smelling fresh. There are bins of all sizes to keep it looking just a bit like that catalog fridge.

FRIDAY, JULY 7 BAKING DRAWERS Ahh, baking! The majority of women I know enjoy baking. I, for one, not so much. Eating what you bake, is another story. So there I was baking cookies with my son for his Chumash seudah. With Chumash molds and fondant. Proud mommy tasting the cookies. All I can say was echhh. Before I could shred my fragile ego to abolish baking, I realized the day before I had washed my containers and had switched the baking soda with the baking powder cover... Just throwing this at you. If something doesn’t taste right when you bake, after you do the drawers, you are not to blame. You can blame me, of course, for making you do the drawers — but I’d rather you blame other things. • Empty your cabinets. Place everything on the counter, and if something hasn’t been used in a while don’t hold on to it. • Fifteen cookie cutters are enough, as opposed to 38. Depending on the size of your cabinets, dedicate a few shelves just for a baking area. • The average baking home should have flour, sugar, brown sugar, confectioners sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa and vanilla sugar. • On the next shelf you can keep the extras. Chocolate chips, sprinkles, molds, etc. • In the next drawer you can put the mixing bowls, measuring cups, baking paper, etc...

July 5, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 125 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

• Wash bins and holders with warm, soapy water. No abrasive cleaning needed. Air dry. • Remember! Bins will keep your drawers neater for a much longer time and the stuff easily accessible. SUNDAY, JULY 9 COAT CLOSET It’s so easy to do this, so no need to get overwhelmed! • Hopefully, you have some bins to separate the gloves/scarves/hats and can designate the top shelf for them. Next shelf should be rain gear, trip bags, flashlights etc. • Hang everything facing one way, size and color in coordination. • Try leaving the bottom of the closet empty as once you start putting things there it becomes the dumpyard of the house. If you need the space, I recommend putting a small laundry-basket-sized bin for bags that need to get out of the house. MONDAY, JULY 10 JUNK DRAWERS Calling all lovers of pens and papers and glue and Scotch tapes and erasers and sharpeners and batteries and screws and okay, okay I’ll stop. I’m telling you, it’s simple! You just have to decide to do it and do it! • Empty the drawers, and discard the unwanted items. Keep the wanted items, but to a minimum supply. • Wipe the drawers and put all the stuff back, ‘n viola! In order to actually keep it that way you do need dividers of some sort; otherwise they will attract the same things you just threw out. • You can make your own until you decide what you want to buy. Measure and cut thick cardboard, or use grocery boxes. Have your kids color or paint them, and enjoy! TUESDAY, JULY 11 SEWING BOX/TOOL BOX The sewing box is a bit daunting for me, because sewing is not my favorite thing to do. The tool box, on the other hand, is my domain. I know, I know. Weird, but I say a pink screwdriver never hurt anybody.

126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 5, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

• Buttons! So many buttons. Every color thread! Decisions, decisions. Chuck some, keep some. • The small Sterilite three-drawer can be bought just about anywhere. Keep threads in the first drawer, buttons in the second, and needles, pins, safety pins and seam rippers in the third. That’s for the basics. You can use the larger drawers for material scraps. There are so many different options for sewing supplies! The key is to keep what you need and throw out what you don’t. Simple and effective. P.S. Don’t be afraid to throw things out. P.P.S. Don’t take stuff out of the garbage bag once you threw it out. Catch you later, Sara! Sara Goldstein is a professional organizer serving Upstate, Brooklyn and beyond. THINK TREEHOUSES ARE JUST FOR KIDS? THINK AGAIN! Treehouses can be traced back to certain Asian countries where people made their homes in the trees above. Access to the treehouses were via pulley systems which utilized thatched baskets to hoist the dwellers to and fro. Recreational treehouses first became popular during the Roman era and have surged in popularity at certain historical points from then on.

In the mid-19th century a town near Paris, France became popular for its treehouse restaurants. Guests were seated inside the treehouses and food was hoisted up to them. At its peak, 200 tables were in use for daily dining. Queen Elizabeth I also enjoyed to dine in a treehouse. The Korowai tribe of New Guinea make their homes roughly 100 feet in the air. Skinny notched poles serve as ladders to reach their homes, and they even carry their animals to the top! The Korowai live so high up due to floods, wild animals, and oh yeah — other Korowai‌ These people are cannibals! Prices for designer treehouses usually range anywhere from $20,000 to $350,000 Looking for a unique vacation experience? There are treehouse hotels located around the world for an outdoorsy adventure.

Real Estate Backyard Fun ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES of living in more suburban areas is that many families have backyards. Sometimes, when purchasing a property, one gets a bonus outdoor playground, swing set, trampoline, swimming pool or basketball court. When purchasing a home, outdoor play equipment is a bonus to some, and if a home doesn’t have any, a lot of families will purchase some kind of equipment and install it for their children’s enjoyment. I was curious how all this backyard fun would affect the liability and the cost of the homeowner. I therefore spoke to a few insurance agents and brokers and came up with some basic answers. Trampolines: Nowadays it is easy to purchase a trampoline suitable for backyard fun. Despite this, many insurance policies specifically do NOT cover trampolines. What this means is that your insurance policy will not cover any trampoline-related claims and may even not renew coverage once they find out about the trampoline. Other policies have no trampoline exclusions, which means that you can have a trampoline with no interference and restrictions from the insurance company, and other policies will offer coverage with safety precautions such as a net enclosure or a fenced-in yard. Bottom line: Read your insurance policy or speak to your insurance agent before succumbing to the pressure from your children begging you to buy them an outdoor trampoline. Treehouses: Less home insurance policies have restrictions on treehouses, but some do. Additional coverage for treehouse-related injuries can be covered through an umbrella policy. This coverage offers additional liability over your normal homeowner’s policy. Again, read your policy. Review your coverage with your agent to make sure you have the proper liability that you need. Backyard swing sets: This was a surprise to me. Believe it or not, some homeowner insurance policies do NOT cover backyard swing sets and may cancel your policy if you install one! The other question is whether it is covered in a case of a loss. Let us say a windstorm or a hurricane occurs; what happens if it gets destroyed? It depends on the company that insures you. Some companies will consider it “personal property,” and

cover it while others will consider it “personal contents” and not cover it. Some policies have “replacement coverage” and will replace it subject to your deductible, and others will depreciate the value — almost like a car — that as it goes down in value, the insurance company will only cover today’s value and not a new replacement. Pools: Home insurance with a pool in most cases will be higher than without. Depending on the company, it can be minimally more, and other companies much higher. This is for the additional liability required when one has a pool. The insurance company will weigh in different factors like whether the pool has a fence, whether it is visible from the street, whether it has a special cover etc. Additionally, in areas where pools are common, like in the south where it is warmer, some insurance companies actually factor in a pool because even if there is no pool, a homeowner is likely to put one in. What a homeowner must be careful about is how the insurance company looks at the pool. Is it an additional structure, like a shed? Is it personal property covered under the homeowner’s policy and subject to a deductible? Is it covered under replacement cost? These are the questions that one should ask their insurance agent. In summary, when purchasing and insuring your home, the premium for your homeowner’s insurance should not be the deciding factor on choosing a home insurance company. It is important that one reviews with their agent what coverage is needed, and additionally, understands how the insurance company views the specific item needing coverage from a liability, replacement cost versus personal property perspective.
