ANOTHER SOURCE OF RELIEF (RE: Summer’s Bane, Issue 150) Thank you so much for the article on poison ivy by Ruchy Reese. She did a great job explaining which plants and leaves not to touch, and it was much appreciated. A few years ago, my children had severe reactions to poison ivy, which included redness, itching, extremely swollen hands and faces, and so on. Though oral steroids and steroid cream didn’t do much — if anything — to relieve symptoms, one thing helped: a homeopathic remedy called Rhus Tox. I bought it in spray form in a local health food store and sprayed it under the tongue every two or three hours. If you begin using it when the first symptoms appear, the reaction won’t be very severe. Even if you only begin using it when the reaction is already out-of-control, it will relieve the itching and reduce redness and swelling within a few hours or less. I thank Hashem for this product that worked so well for my kids and for the others I recommended it to. Much hatzlacha, and good health to all, A Local Mother

to see non-dairy options mentioned. Another option for non-dairy pizza is to follow all the normal steps for dough and sauce, and instead of using cheese, top it with ground, sauteed chicken or beef. I also like to put a drop of the sauce into the meat while cooking, along with a can of pineapple tidbits. (Yes, it may sound odd, but something amazing happens when pineapple meets pizza sauce!) Mushrooms also taste great with the meat and pineapple topping. Bon appetit! R.R.

HAMOTZI OR MEZONOS?

(RE: It’s Pizza Time!, Issue 150) Thank you so much for an awesome magazine week after week. I would like to comment on the pizza recipes featured last week. These recipes look tantalizing and I would love to try them, but can you clarify whether they are Hamotzi or Mezonos? S.W.

I tried the pizza recipes featured, and after making a Mezonos and eating it for supper, someone told me that the dough was Hamotzi. I was, quite understandably, very bothered by the fact that I made the wrong bracha. Next time, please clarify the bracha of foods you feature in your recipe column. Thank you, A Reader LEAH STERN RESPONDS: I’m so sorry that you inadvertently made the wrong bracha on the pizza featured last week. However, this is not a recipe issue, but basic halacha. Every Yiddishe housewife should be aware that dough made with water will result in a Hamotzi bread.

(RE: Out of the Closet, Issue 150) I find that shoe racks don’t work for kids. They don’t take the effort to bend down and pick up their shoes to put them away. I placed bamboo placemats on the floor of my kids’ closet, and they keep their shoes and Crocs on it. These placemats are cheap, neat and keep the closet in order. They’re also easy to maintain; when vacuuming, I simply shake out the placemats and vacuum the pile of dust and dirt along with the rest of room. Thanks for an amazing magazine, B.R.

Dear Basya,

CHAPTER 9

I was on plan for almost a full year. During that time, I lost 30 pounds and then maintained my weight for a few months. Recently, I decided to try maintenance on my own, without my usual follow-up weigh-ins. Unfortunately, I gained back almost all of the weight. Please explain how I gained the weight back so quickly. I have been sticking to the plan almost perfectly. I eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, and only go off track around dinner time and during the evening. How did things spiral out of control so quickly if I was basically on plan? Almost Perfect

Dear Almost Perfect, Oftentimes when someone isn’t on any food plan, they are eating minimally throughout the day, and then eat too much at night. For example, they begin their day with a cup of coffee and some chocolate or a pastry, and then eat almost nothing until the evening, at which point their hunger becomes insatiable and they overeat, slowly putting on pounds. When creating a food plan for clients we encourage them to do the exact opposite — eat every two or three hours throughout the day, have a moderate dinner, and finish eating by approximately 7:30 p.m. It seems to me like you are enjoying the best of both worlds — you are eating throughout the day, but aren’t cutting calories from the evening! Therefore you are actually eating more than you were before

50 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 6, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

you began your diet! This is why you are gaining so rapidly despite being “almost” on plan. The fix for this would obviously be to go from “almost” on plan to exactly on plan. Best, Basya Please send in your nutrition question to info@nutritionbytanya.com, Attn: Basya. Basya Kovacs is a nutrition counselor at Nutrition by Tanya and is the manager of the Monsey and Monroe locations. Parshas Shelach

By: Malka Schneps

WHEN THE SATMAR REBBE, R’ Yoel, zechuso yugein aleinu, arrived on American shores, the Jewish landscape was nothing like it is today. The number of Yidden wearing shtreimlach before his arrival, along with the other Rebbes who survived, was negligible. But the Rebbe was unshakeable in his beliefs and strong like a lion in his strength to stand up for Torah values — alone, if necessary. Immediately upon his arrival, the Rebbe founded a beis medrash. At first he would stand outside to invite people to daven in his minyan. One secular Jew saw the Rebbe doing this and decided to offer what he believed would be helpful advice. America was different, the man explained, and the Rebbe would not find enough “customers” to fill his shul — he would surely be better off finding another line of “business.” History proves who was right in the end. The American ideals of fashion meant nothing to the Rebbe. Soon after his arrival, another Yid told the Rebbe that he should be embarrassed to be dressed in his chasidishe levush. The Rebbe replied that there would soon come a time when a Yid who was not dressed as he was would be embarrassed to walk there. Again, history proves who was right in the end. It says in this week’s parsha, “Van’hi v’eineinu kachagavim… — We were like grasshoppers in our eyes, and so we were in their eyes” (Bamidbar 13:33). Rashi explains this by way of the Gemara (Sotah 35a) that the meraglim had heard the Nefilim telling each other, “There are ants in the vineyard that look like people.” I once heard in a shiur that the Nefilim, who were giants, valued height tremendously and looked down upon anyone who was small. It is understandable that people whose value system treasures height would consider the meraglim, who were not giants, as grasshoppers. The question is, why should the meraglim suddenly come to see themselves as small? Although they were nesi’im of the greatest nation on earth, as soon as they faced a society that did not respect

54 / THE MONSEY VIEW

them, they lost respect for themselves. They adopted the values of the culture in which they were traveling and applied those values to themselves. I was once seated next to a woman at a chasunah who was among the first chasidim to live in Boro Park many years ago. She’d lived about a mile down 13th Avenue from the shul, and as she used to walk along the avenue toward shul, she was frequently harassed for her levush. One Rosh Hashanah, she was walking along 13th Avenue wearing a white tichel when a woman accosted her, ridiculing and criticizing her for wearing that “old world” tichel. “This is America!” the woman exclaimed. Sitting next to me, the lady picked up a drinking glass, turned to me, and asked, “Do you think I cared what that woman said to me? This glass could have been speaking those words, for all I cared. Why should I have cared what this woman thought? I have a Rebbe, and if the Rebbe says this is how we dress, then this is how I dress — finished!” This woman did not judge herself by American standards. She did not say, “I was unfashionable in their eyes,” or, “I was old-fashioned in their eyes.” She had a strong enough sense of who she was not to judge herself by what the society around her believed. She was solid enough in who she was that she did not care about what anyone else thought or said. On a trip to the mountains, 16-year-old Naftali* looked around and saw that there were no other Yidden in the park his family was visiting. He told his parents, “It’s really hot out, but I’m going to davka wear my rekel. I want to look Jewish, even if I’m out of place — no, because I’m out of place. It shouldn’t look like I’m trying to blend in.” As Yidden, we should be proud of who we are, and we should reject the values of the society around us when they contradict the Torah. Even if others look down on us, we should hold our heads up in dignity and honor. May we all be proud of who we are — no matter where we are.

Nice to meet you, Rabbi Romand. I understand that you are the administrator of the new mosod, Ohel Sara, which opened this past year. Can you tell me a bit about your mosod? The mission of Ohel Sara is to develop ehrliche, happy, highly educated, confident girls. We provide a highly academic education and give our students the necessary skills to succeed in their role as the akeres habayis. A strong focus of ours is simchas hachaim. We believe that a child who has true simchas hachaim — simchas hachaim that is internal, not theoretical — can accomplish anything. This only comes through a child’s positive feeling about herself, self-confidence, self-pride and a feeling of self-worth. In our school, the Eibishter and Yiddishkeit are real. Our students are taught to talk to Hashem and apply emunah and bitachon to everyday life. For example, we had a

58 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 6, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

student who was under the weather. When the children found out, their instant reaction was, “The Eibishter will help her feel better.” The teachers talk about the Eibishter in mundane activities: “Eibishter, please help me find the cups.” “Eibishter, thank You for making the copies come out good.” Additionally, we instill in the girls a true pride to be a Yid; that we are special and need to act accordingly. What kind of parent body are you catering to? Ohel Sarah was opened to accommodate a specific clientele. We cater to a very ehrlich and Torah’dig mainstream crowd. As a mosod, we have very strong policies that we stand behind. The families we accept are not only families that just keep the policies, but rather also reflect them. The parents of our students want to know that the other parents in the school share similar hashkafos, so they can take

comfort in that. Can you tell me a little about your background? For the past number of years, I have been involved in various areas of chinuch. I started out as a yungerman in Eretz Yisroel, where I founded an organization called Avos L’Banim to support American families struggling in the Israeli chinuch system. We organized shiurim and provided guidance to assist families through the various challenges they faced. This gave me the opportunity to discuss and gain hadracha in chinuch issues with various rabbanim and mechanchim. I also took a yearlong chinuch course from R. Zackon. The focus was on practical and creative ways of teaching, how to assess and gauge children’s progress, and an array of skills necessary for a successful classroom. Since then, I have been involved in curriculum design. These experiences honed my insight and appreciation of the field.

When it comes to a new school, one of the reservations parents have is that they want to see a structure. Are these valid concerns, and how would you address them? Such feelings are very reasonable and valid. I myself am a parent in a new cheder, and it was a big concern of ours. After discussing it with daas Torah, the final decision was based on what the cheder had to offer. To address this challenge in Ohel Sara, we have brought aboard a vaad harabbanim with years of experience in chinuch and top mechanchos with a minimum of 10 years’ experience to help us. They have a mehalech of chinuch that reflects what we want to accomplish. On staff we have an amazing preschool director, who brings a creative, unique approach to education. She has been highly successful in helping children of all ages really grow and glow. She is integrating some of the many techniques she’s trained in, including creative journaling and Kagan Structures, into the classroom. Such an approach creates an atmosphere where all the needs of a child are addressed. Our curriculum coordinator is an experienced teacher who also designs creative educational material. She has formulated a professional and practical curriculum for next year. We are also especially excited about our educational consultant, who is a very accomplished principal with over 20 years of experience in one of the established Monsey schools, who is helping to structure and design our school. Mrs. Katz, a popular kriah specialist for the past 25 years, will be the consultant for our kriah program. Technology is a hot topic in every school. Nowadays, technology is often needed for work, and we find it becoming more and more common in homes. What is the school’s hashkafah on technology, and how do you

deal with that? Ohel Sara takes a very strong stance when it comes to technology. We understand that technology is here to stay. At the same time, this does not mean that we have to embrace it. Installing a filter on a smartphone does not make this phone a “kosher” phone. The danger of technology is not only the accessibility that it offers, but more the lifestyle that it associates itself with. Technology is a culture, and once that culture is introduced into a home, it is frightening to think where it will take you. How do you deal with challenges within the school? Discipline is a major part of chinuch, and the issue must be addressed without compromising the relationship and trust of the child. Discipline is not about reprimanding a child, but rather about being mechanech them as to what’s right and wrong. Discipline is effective when there is trust between the child and teacher. Every circumstance is different, and simply addressing the behavior without addressing the trigger of the behavior can be counterproductive. We currently are focusing on addressing challenges in their premature stages to reduce the frustration in the older grades. You mentioned how you promote tznius, not from a perspective of “this is what you must do,” but from a standpoint that they should want to do what’s right. Can you expound on that? Tznius is a very touchy subject. It’s a topic that includes more than one’s manner of dress; it’s a mindset. Tznius involves how we talk, act and what we share with people. One of the challenges the world faces with technology is the lack of privacy that it engenders, which is a breach in tznius. It is a subject that has to be taught correctly. We have been in contact with someone who

has a very successful approach to this. She works on removing the stigma of tznius being unfashionable and unappealing, and instead associates it with confidence and internal pride. A lot of what you have described until now is about the ruach of the school. What about the academics? A solid academic education is important and can potentially be a foundation for a woman’s future. We also want each graduate to be prepared to enter the high school of her choice. We have a very strong focus on providing a solid, high-level education. This year’s curriculum surpassed our initial expectations. We are currently are working with our educational consultant, curriculum coordinator and preschool director to produce a high-level program for next year. One last question. I assume you already know that running a mosod is a tremendous financial undertaking. Do you, as an administrator, have a plan on how you are going to deal with this? The stability of a mosod is all based on its financial security. I think this question is something that reflects on the overall stability and organization of a school. I have met people who are administrators or who have opened mosdos with no financial plans, and they suffer because of it. To answer your question, yes, we have a strong financial plan to provide the continuous financial support of the mosod. We have been in contact with experienced administrators and BMG board members who have helped make this a reality. Rabbi Romand, I appreciate your time. I know that this is something that Monsey has been waiting for, and hope that you continue to see much hatzlacha.

Proposed Legislation Would Mandate Lap Belts in All NYS School Buses A BILL INTRODUCED by a local legislator would require school buses to have shoulder belts in order to improve student safety. Senator David Carlucci introduced the idea at a news conference held last Friday. If passed into law, all school buses purchased after July 1, 2019, would be required to have shoulder belts, reported The Journal News. Older buses would need to be retrofitted with shoulder belts by April 1, 2019. If passed, the bill would also require drivers to check on students to make sure that they are wearing seatbelts. According to Carlucci, the National Transportation Safety Board has found that shoulder belts can be an effective means of protecting students in both sideimpact crashes and school bus rollovers. “This legislation will put lap shoulder seat belts in all new school buses in New York State and mandate that students wear them at all times while on a school bus,” said Carlucci. “The NTSB is telling us seat belts save lives and lessen injuries. New York needs to take this guidance seriously, and lawmakers must make this legislation a top priority.”

With their high-backed, closely spaced seats, strong roofs, and reinforced sidewalls, school buses are already designed to offer greater protection to their occupants, but the NTSB has recently recommended that shoulder belts be installed on school buses nationwide for greater student safety. The cost of installing shoulder belts is currently unknown.

Fire Safety in the Spotlight After Two Area Incidents TWO SEPARATE INCIDENTS that took place last week emphasized the importance of fire safety, with all parties involved thankfully escaping serious injury. VIN News reported that two houses just outside Kiryas Joel were destroyed last Thursday when a partially lit cigarette butt was discarded on a wooden deck. The flames traveled from the deck up the side of the house, moving through the roof shared by the two attached homes. Approximately 100 firefighters from seven different fire companies fought the three alarm blaze, with one treated on scene for heat exhaustion. Five residents were evacuated safely by the Kiryas Joel Fire Department, the first emergency crew to arrive on scene. Two sifrei Torah were also rescued from a shul located inside one of the two Mountainview Drive homes, both of which sustained major damage from the flames, smoke and massive amounts of water used to extinguish the blaze. Just two days earlier, a Monsey area homeowner

62 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 6, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

awoke last Tuesday morning to find his bed in flames after leaving a cell phone charger plugged into the wall right next to his mattress. Tallman Fire Department volunteer Captain Patrick McKiernan, one of approximately 15 volunteer firefighters who responded to the call, said that the man was “extremely, extremely lucky” to be alive. Phone chargers, which can get very hot, should never be placed next to flammable items because of the potential risk of fire, explained McKiernan. “Chargers need to be placed in outlets with proper ventilation,” said McKiernan. “That way the heat doesn’t build up to dangerous levels.” McKiernan said that the homeowner’s mattress and box spring were completely charred. The homeowner’s blankets were burned as well, and he sustained minor injuries. “This should definitely be a wake-up call for all of us,” noted McKiernan.

THE PERIOD OF SEFIRAH — the time when we are committed to personal growth in preparation for Matan Torah — is behind us, yet we continue learning Pirkei Avos throughout the summer to reinforce the importance of learning about middos. During Sefirah, we remember the 24,000 talmidim of Rabi Akiva who, the meforshim explain, passed away because they didn’t have proper respect for one another. It is difficult to understand how the students of Rabi Akiva struggled in this area when Rabi Akiva was the one who said on the mitzvah of V’ahavta l’reiacha kamocha that “zeh klal gadol baTorah” — this is a great principle in the Torah. In this week’s perek, Rabi Chanina ben Teradyon says (Avos 3:3): “Two who sit together and there is no divrei Torah between them, this is a gathering of mocking cynics… But two who sit and there is divrei Torah between them, the Divine Presence of the Shechinah rests between them.” Chazal desired for us to be engaged in Torah study at all times so that we can remain connected to the Shechinah. However, Pirkei Avos was written for all generations and for all people, and

June 6, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 67 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

so there is a deeper meaning in the words of the mishnah, a form of constant “divrei Torah” that is possible for even those of a weaker generation to achieve. In Parshas Vayigash (Bereishis 44:30), Yehuda tells Yosef regarding Binyomin that “Nafsho kshurah b’nafsho” — his (Yaakov’s) nefesh is connected to his (Binyomin’s) nefesh. The meforshim explain that Yehuda didn’t mean that only Binyomin had this connection with Yaakov; all of Yaakov’s children shared this connection. When Yosef realized that the brothers were aware of this connection between them, he felt ready to reveal himself. The Baal Haturim points out that “kshura” has the same gematria as “Torah.” When two people bond over Torah study, the result is a truly deep, internal connection. However, perhaps we can achieve this deep “Torah” connection not only by talking in Torah, but also by relating in a Torah’dige way. When we speak with another person and truly recognize and internalize that we are both children of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, we were both created by One Master, Elokai Mimaal, then surely this can also be considered a form of “divrei Torah,” which ultimately brings the Presence of the Shechinah. The pasuk tells us: “V’ahavta l’reiacha kamocha — Ani Hashem.” We need to love others like ourselves because, as the Torah reminds us, “Ani Hashem” — we are all children of One Father. Perhaps the talmidim of Rabi Akiva did not show adequate respect for one another because they felt like separate creations, instead of feeling the deep connection that comes from a constant awareness that we all share One Father in Heaven. The reality is that not every two people who sit together can always engage in divrei Torah, but we know that the Ribono Shel Olam does not push anyone away, including the simple Yidden. However, if we understand Rabi Chanina’s words to mean that when we sit with others we should connect through Torah — through the Torah-based understanding that we all share a chelek Elokai Mimaal, then the Divine Presence of the Shechinah will rest upon us. Many years ago, a chasid by the name of Moshe arrived from afar to Rebbe Yitzchak Vorke, zt”l. He came in and started crying uncontrollably about his son, who needed a major refuah. After Reb Yitzchak thought for a little bit, he said, “I don’t see how you can be helped. It’s a gezeirah min haShamayim.” “But please, Rebbe,” begged the chasid, “please help me. I will not go home until the Rebbe will poel a yeshuah!” “I’m sorry, I cannot help you,” the Rebbe said. “I think you

“I realized that even if I can’t do anything for you, the one thing I can do is sit with you, feel your pain, and cry together with you.”

68 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 6, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

should go home so that you can still grab the opportunity to say goodbye to your son.” With a broken heart, the chasid ran out of the room to begin the journey back home. As his carriage made its way out of the town, he suddenly heard someone yell for the baal agalah to stop. To his surprise, the Rebbe emerged from another carriage, which had been following his, and began walking toward him. “Moshe, after you left, I kept thinking what I can possibly do for you,” the Rebbe said. “I realized that even if I can’t do anything for you, the one thing I can do is sit with you, feel your pain, and cry together with you.” And so, the Rebbe and the chasid sat there at the side of the road, crying together over the chasid’s painful situation. After a few minutes, the Rebbe turned to his chasid and asked, “Moshe, do you have some wine in your carriage?” “Yes,” he answered in surprise. “Why?” “Because when two Yidden are connected and feel along with each other, the Shechinah comes and brings a yeshuah. Your son will become healthy. Let’s drink a l’chaim!” This story illustrates the power of true caring and devotion between two people. Indeed, this is also a form of the “divrei Torah” that is referred to in this week’s perek. Such powerful feelings of connection attract the Presence of the Shechinah and can bring true yeshuos. Rabbi Dovid Steiman specializes in the chinuch of today’s bachurim, enabling them to become their very best selves.

Quinoa Cuisine

Recipes and food styling by: Leah Stern Photo credit: C. Tarkieltaub Quinoa has gained muchdeserved popularity and is even considered a gourmet food. It’s one of the healthiest grains; some even classify it as a complete protein because it is the only grain that contains all essential amino acids. Interestingly, it is usually found only in organic variety. Its taste is unique, yet pretty bland, serving as a canvas for many flavors and textures. Make sure to rinse quinoa well under cool running water to remove natural sopians, a bitter substance that coats the grain.

The roasted vegetables complement the quinoa beautifully, creating a very special dish. I dressed it with caesar dressing, but oil and salt can be used to create a lighter version. Make some extra for a filling pack-along lunch.

Quinoa with Roasted Vegetables

INGREDIENTS 2 cups cooked quinoa

1 red pepper

1 large purple onion

2 T. olive oil

½ of a small-medium butternut squash

1 T. salt

1 yellow squash

¼ tsp. ground pepper 1 garlic, crushed

1 green squash

CAESAR DRESSING ¼ cup light mayonnaise 1 T. sugar 1 T. vinegar

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW

1 crushed garlic or frozen cube Dash of pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. To prepare quinoa, bring 1 cup of quinoa and 2 cups of water to boil. Cook for 20 minutes, until water is absorbed. Allow to stand for 5 minutes, and then fluff with a fork. Salt lightly. 2. Slice onions into thick slices, and cut squash and peppers into chunks. Mix with oil and spices and place on a flat roaster pan. 3. Cover tightly with foil and bake on 450° for 50 minutes. Uncover and bake for additional 20 minutes. Top broil for 3–5 minutes, taking care that it doesn’t burn. 4. Combine quinoa with 1½ cups of vegetables and serve with any caesar dressing (see one recipe listed here).

There’s nothing like a Yiddishe community when it comes to giving. For us, chesed is a way of life. Here in Monsey we’ve got amazing volunteer services like Chaverim, Hatzolah and Misaskim, which are household names and deserve our unending appreciation and respect. Beyond that, there are other organizations that help the community in ways we may not even realize. Here’s a peek behind the scenes at but a few special chesed organizations. Regretfully, time constraints prevented the inclusion of many more wonderful organizations such as Darchei Chesed, Chesed 24/7 and more. They are all worthy of our hakaras hatov. Please note: Names and identifying details of all chesed recipients in the following personal accounts have been changed to preserve anonymity.

MILES FOR LIFE

845.492.3131 | donate@milesforlife.org A PERSONAL ACCOUNT When Miles for Life called me, it was really bad timing. I mean, I love to do chesed and I’d told them last year they could try me if they needed a sponsorship. But then they actually called and asked if I would be able to donate 22,000 miles to cover plane tickets for a young patient and his parents who needed to go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. “Funds are tight now,” I said, “and I need to travel somewhere myself. It’s really not a good time to share my miles. I’m sorry.” The person on the other end of the line thanked me, saying she understood. But five minutes later I called her back, shocked, and more than willing to give my miles. “Is the name of the patient Yaakov Green?” I asked, telling her that own my brother had mentioned to me that his child needed to go to the Mayo Clinic to see a specific specialist. She only answered me that Miles for Life has a confidentiality policy. No bother. One phone call to family and I figured it out on my own: It was my own flesh and blood who needed the miles! Of course I donated them! And I will next time as well — even if it isn’t for my own family, because everyone deserves to receive the medical care they need. WHAT THEY DO Miles for Life is dedicated to alleviating the burden of travel expenses that may prevent a choleh from receiving the highest level of care available for his/her condition. By matching up any type of donated points — be they bank or credit card points, air miles, gift cards or vouchers — with patients who can’t afford plane tickets, Miles for Life is able to help with the healing. More than 1 million miles and 100 trips are arranged each week. Since its inception three years ago, Miles for Life has funded 5,642 trips with a total of more than 62 million miles. That’s $2.6 million that cholei Yisroel saved on travel expenses!

At A TIME, SATMAR BIKUR CHOLIM OF MONSEY 718.854.2500 | 845.425.9405 marlene@apaintl.com

A PERSONAL ACCOUNT As a widowed mother with four kids — two of whom are medically frail — life can be completely overwhelming, and sometimes it doesn’t take much to tip the scale. Recently, the scale was tipped all the way to one side; I felt like I couldn’t handle anything anymore! And it didn’t help matters that one of my other children was falling behind in cheder due to his ADHD. When I called Satmar Bikur Cholim of Monsey, I really didn’t know how they could help, but help me they did! After discussing it, it was decided that we’d focus on my son with ADHD. Bikur Cholim is sponsoring part of his therapy three times a week, and that helps him learn to manage his ADHD and keeps him busy so I can have a little peace of mind. Now the scales are finally starting to tip the other way, and all because Bikur Cholim cares! WHAT THEY DO Satmar Bikur Cholim of Monsey was established to serve many needs. One of their most well-known services is the sponsorship of stays at Aim B’Yisroel and Aishes Chayil for postpartum mothers who have several children at home or other extenuating circumstances. The Bikur Cholim also subsidizes medical needs not covered by insurance, such as therapy for mental wellness, and they also help with patient copays. A program that will provide meals for families going through challenging medical situations is currently in the planning stages.

we are privileged to work amongst those that place the needs of others before their own. On behalf of the entire A TIME family, we’d like to extend our sincere condolences to

Mrs. Devorah Gorelnick upon the passing of her dear father,

R’ Moshe Ben R’ David ‫זצ“ל‬

May you be comforted in the presence of the comforting words you provide to so many others in their darkest hour, and may you witness only simcha and good tidings.

TOMCHE SHABBOS

L’Asurim

845.357.5885 help@tomcheshabbos.org

718.513.2525 outreach@lasurim.org

RABBI ROSENSTOCK OF TOMCHE SHABBOS SHARES A STORY Last week I received an interesting phone call. A family had received an unexpected financial gift, and they separated maaser right away, cutting a check for Tomche Shabbos. I was asked to come pick up it up. When I arrived on their block, I was struck by the incongruity of the family’s tiny, old house right across the street from a huge mansion. And yet it was the family who lived very simply that handed me $12,000 to help their fellow Monseyites. “We wanted to give this to Tomche Shabbos,” they told me, “because we know that the money really goes to help people and that you’ll use it wisely.” That’s Tomche Shabbos; we’ve been helping Monsey families for years.

L’ASURIM SHARES Being imprisoned and away from one’s family is terribly difficult, and we pray that no Yid should go through this. But when it does happen, L’Asurim works hard to protect the rights of the imprisoned. As a religious Jewish man, Rabbi Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin needed to be able to daven and learn as a Yid should. L’Asurim is happy to have facilitated the use of the sefer Torah that was with Rabbi Rubashkin during his imprisonment as well as a weekly minyan consisting of L’Asurim volunteers.

WHAT THEY DO The chesed at Tomche Shabbos is multifold. Most Monseyites know about the volunteers who spend Thursday night packaging and delivering food for Shabbos to those in need, but Tomche Shabbos is so much more than that alone! In the past five years, Tomche Shabbos has helped over 300 people find work through their job-placement program. They’ve also helped people develop skills to enter the workforce through their low-cost classes in which programs like Quickbooks, Word and Oracle Database are taught. And every other month or so, Tomche Shabbos warehouses turn into Costco-like shopping centers where families can purchase foodstuff at below-wholesale prices. This helps not only struggling families, but the Monsey supermarkets as well, which have an accumulated total of $3.6 million of accounts in debt. Before yom tov, Tomche Shabbos also provides $200,000 worth of clothing for the community.

WHAT THEY DO L’Asurim is dedicated to prisoner well-being, acting as an advocate to protect prisoners’ civil and religious rights. Care packages containing kosher food, reading material and religious items are facilitated year-round for prisoners as well, and family and clergy visits, including transportation, are also arranged by L’Asurim. There is also a pen pal program between inmates and non-prisoners run by L’Asurim. Crime prevention through education is another area where L’Asurim excels. Events are arranged and literature is distributed in the Yiddishe community about legalities in various circumstances.

KUPATH EZRAH

845.426.6504 kupathezrah@verizon.net RABBI MASHINSKY OF KUPATH EZRAH SHARES A STORY Several years ago, there was a man who went through our job-placement program. We really invested in him, helping him to learn new skills and become settled in a position. A while later, this man was blessed to open his own business and did very well financially. We were thrilled to see things working out for him. One day, that man came over and asked me to calculate how much money Kupath Ezrah had invested in him. It came out to $11,300. He immediately wrote out a check for that sum. “From now on, anything I give to Kupath Ezrah will be fresh funds; I won’t feel like I am just paying you back.” That’s a great feeling, knowing that we helped set this man up for a successful career in business. WHAT THEY DO Kupath Ezrah was established 59 years ago when Monsey was just a fledgling community. It was established by the people, for the people. The first year, $1,200 was distributed to families in need. Since then, over $40 million has been distributed to families in need. There are currently over 750 families who receive monthly checks, which help them keep bread on the table, clothing on their backs and a roof over their heads. Emergency funding is also available for gas, electric and water bills, when the need arises. Monsey Jobs Network and Parneseini are projects of Kupath Ezrah that help people find jobs. And, of course, there is the Nearly New Shop in Spring Valley that sells clothing at bargain prices, and the Furniture Exchange in Monsey that sells gently used furniture for very discounted prices.

Margarine has trans fat and butter had saturated fat and we now know that trans fat is basically equivalent to eating plastic.

Can you tell me the time using that same watch? There is more to food than just portioned carbs and fats. in fact there are things that we are still finding out about food. Hashem packaged the nutrients in our foods in a unique way; giving the body all it need to be able to break it down, absorb and utilize the nutrients from each food. By every meal look down at what you are eating and try your best to make sure there is: A variety of color A portion of protein A potion of carbs A portion of vegetable (Try and eat different colors) A portion of healthy fat There was a really great line that I heard that summed up what healthy eating is. “If your Bubbe doesn't recognize it as food it probably isn’t!”

The story I am about to share happened to me about 23 years ago. Ever since then, when I wake up in the morning, I say Modeh Ani with special zeal — I am awake! I can breathe! I repeat the words of Modeh Ani again and again, marveling at and internalizing the

profundity of the message these words hold. Though so much time has elapsed, I continue to reminisce and relive my experience. Now I want to share with the world my encounter with death, so that others who luckily haven’t experienced it can gain from its message.

I WAS A YOUNG MOTHER of four little children, the oldest of whom was just five years old. I hadn’t been feeling well for a couple of months, and after much consultation, the doctors decided to proceed with a difficult surgical procedure. The surgery was traumatic, not only from a physical aspect, but because of the deeper, emotional and spiritual experience it engendered. Soon after the onset of the procedure, which was done with the use of only local anesthesia, I began to lose a lot of blood. This caused a commotion in the operating room. I asked the doctor what was wrong and he responded, “You’re bleeding a bit.” But from the sound of things, I knew it wasn’t just a bit. Minutes later,

THE MONSEY VIEW / 97

my head started swimming. Doctors came running in from all over. They turned me upsidedown, my head facing downward and my feet lifted up. From that moment on, I started fighting for my life. It wasn’t a simple fight. I was there and not there at the same time. Physically, I lay on the operating table, awake for much of the eight-hour-long operation. For the most part, I didn’t feel the pain. I was aware of which parts of my body they were taking out and working on. I also knew whom they called into the room, and I heard what the doctors were saying. They threw comments like, “We’re losing her, we’re losing her!” and “We must save her! She’s a mother of four children!” Then came the desperate “What can we do? We’ve tried everything…” It was frightening. At the same time, I felt my neshamah fighting for me. With unreal clarity, I understood that my time had come and that I was being summoned to judgment. I was standing before Hashem, with no malachim or intermediaries between us. It was a clear struggle. My neshamah was fighting for my body to remain alive. I remember thinking, I must live! Who will care for my baby and children?! Who will be there for my husband? Oh, I just must be at the simchos of my children… These were my thoughts. But I was not controlling the negotiations. Present at the Beis Din were Hashem, my neshamah and myself. And it was my neshamah that was presiding over the proceedings, acting as my advocate and explain-

ing why I must remain alive. I realized the amazing truth: My neshamah remembered every detail that had transpired in my life — all of my deeds and actions — and was bringing them forth before the Heavenly Court, trying to tip the scales in my favor. Most of the deeds that my neshamah brought forth were the acts of kindness and chesed that I had performed over my lifetime. It was interesting to discover — and I later learned that many seforim tell of this too — that chesed is the greatest thing a person can do, not only for others, but for himself, too. Especially meritorious are acts of kindness that earn little or no accolades from the people around us, but whose true effort and value remain simply between Hakadosh Baruch Hu and ourselves. I remember three main points that my neshamah used to argue my case. First, she presented an issue where I had been mevater to my husband. After my chasunah, my husband asked me to undertake a specific kabbalah. It was very, very hard for me to agree, but I did respect his wishes. It was not a move that my husband appreciated enough, because he never even realized how difficult it was for me! It was mesiras nefesh that came with no outside recognition. Today, I keep a little paper of segulos near my bed. One of the things it lists is that when a wife is mevater to her husband, even in private, she merits ehrliche children. Next, my neshamah presented an ongoing act

DAY AFTER DAY, we thank Hashem for the love of kindness that He implanted within us. Gemilas chesed, doing acts of kindness, imitates Hashem Himself, and is one of the triad of distinctive characteristics of our holy nation. The love of this mitzvah propels our people into maintaining millions of multifaceted gemachim and incredible chesed organizations all over the globe. But beyond the opportunities presented by these more “commercial” chesed enterprises, there’s the chesed we do as private citizens. As the nation for whom kindness is a way of life, we will never stop reaching out to give each other a helping hand. Here are some of the finer points that can take this glorious mitzvah to the next level.

LOOK OUT! In Yerushalayim of the earlier part of the twentieth century, there was little food, few comforts, and constant struggle and turmoil. The city had spiritual riches, but precious little physical resources. Through the suffering, many people were sustained by the loving support of one of the city’s tzaddikim, Rav Aryeh Levin, zt”l, father-in-law of Rav Elyashiv. This singular man spent hours 1

every Shabbos visiting the convicts in Yerushalayim’s central prison. He could be found consoling every bereaved family. He took care of providing food to destitute widows, visited the sick, and even as he aged, was an unstoppable baal chesed. Once, an acquaintance persuaded Rav Aryeh to take a few days’ rest in a convalescent home. He arrived on a bright sunny day to rest and recharge. Only he found no rest. The ever-cheerful, smiling Rav Aryeh became dispirited and miserable. Soon he explained to the proprietor that he was leaving. “What am I doing here?” he said. “All I do is sit and eat and drink. No one comes to pour out his heart to me, and I don’t have the opportunity to do a single thing for anyone, to help a single human being... Don’t be angry with me, but I can’t go on staying here.1” Chesed was not something Rav Aryeh did when the opportunity presented itself; rather, he focused his days on what he could do for other people. Because, after all, if I’m here for myself, what am I?

When other people and what we can do for them become our focus, we adopt a truly Yiddishe life’s philosophy. If you’re going to a neighbor’s wedding, is there another neighbor who doesn’t drive who would appreciate a ride? Is there someone in your life who can’t get out and needs a phone call? Someone who would love to know about a sale you’ve spotted? Megillas Esther concludes with a comment about the life of Mordechai Hatzadik, describing him as a “doresh tov le’amo” — someone seeking the good of his people. Not only did he do what was asked, but he also sought opportunities to help, to make other Yidden’s lives easier and better.

ALL ABOUT YOU? When it comes to chesed, it has to be about the other person. Letting go of our own likes and dislikes and prejudices in order to get into some-

This story is retold in his biography, A Tzaddik in Our Time, written by Simcha Raz (Feldheim Publishers, 1976).

ABA ServiceS one else’s head and take care of their needs is not easy. Let’s take a scenario where a group of workmates is organizing a rotation to cook suppers for a coworker with a sick child. The family only eats chicken under a certain hashgacha, and they don’t like schnitzel and prefer dairy. Inevitably, someone will comment, “Why do they have to be so picky in a situation like this? Is it so bad if they eat another brand of chicken? It’s all kosher!” or “Beggars can’t be choosers! Who has time for dairy?” But viewing the matter through the eyes of the recipient will never produce this kind of reaction. Think about them: The situation in the hospital is tense,

IT’S THE SMALL THINGS A group once went to do chesed in a local nursing home. After chatting with the residents, they gave out individual servings of delicious cheesecake. Then they waved their hands and left, glowing. The residents each looked at the small aluminum pan with its clear cover, tied with a pretty ribbon. Mrs. Lefkowitz made an attempt to open her box, but the ribbon defeated her arthritic fingers, and the aluminum closure cut them. Mr. Braun peered at the box. Where was the list of ingredients? He’d had celiac disease for years. Mrs. Kahan and Mrs. Levy waved their boxes after the departed visitors to try and give them back. They were both diabetic. And Rebbetzin Shulman wished she could put it in the fridge somehow. She hoped none of her fellow seniors would make the mistake of eating the cake now — they couldn’t eat it after a fleishig lunch. When doing chesed, it’s thinking of the small details — to label the package, take into account preferences and correct timing, etc. — that elevates the mitzvah and takes a person from just being yotzei to actually doing a beautiful deed and enhancing someone’s day.

HE ARRIVED ON A BRIGHT SUNNY DAY TO REST AND RECHARGE. ONLY HE FOUND NO REST. and the child needs her parents constantly; the mother is at her bedside; the other kids are anxious, afraid, and also resent that Mommy is never available for games and stories and homework. And now, they don’t even have Mommy’s normal suppers that they’re used to, and “Eww, I’m not eating this!” Seeing things from the other party’s perspective changes everything. It can also change our approach and the words we say. Megillas Rus reports that when Rus came home from the fields, she gave Naomi “what she had left over.” Why? Couldn’t she serve her mother-in-law the first portion from the gleanings? The Chidah explains that Rus knew her mother-in-law’s character very well. Naomi wanted Rus to do well for herself, for her own benefit, and wouldn’t have accepted the food if Rus had said, “Here, I brought this for you.” So Rus entered her mother-in-law’s mindset and gave her the food as if it were her own leftovers. Now Naomi would feel just fine about accepting it.

OURS FOREVER If we sometimes find ourselves lacking motivation, we can remember that, ultimately, all the chesed we do is done for ourselves. The Gemara in Sanhedrin 103 lists some people who have no portion in Olam Haba. The Gemara notes that Micha, who established an idol that brought many Yidden to avodah zarah, is missing from this list. Why? “Shepito metzuyah l’ovrei derachim” — Micha served food to passersby, and this kindness raised him from losing his eternal reward, which he deserved for his wickedness. The only things we will take with us are those that we do for others.

in an open bin or basket. Washcloths and smaller towels that won’t fold nicely should definitely be kept in a basket, as these do not make nice piles. Dish towels should be kept in the kitchen, since that is where they are used. However, if you have a very large collection you can keep the extras in your linen closet, either in nicely folded piles or in another basket. There are a few different options when it comes to storing linen. Of course, folding them into nice piles and tying them with ribbons is the prettiest choice. A more practical — but less fancy — way is folding each piece separately and then storing them all nicely in one of the set’s pillowcases. You can then pile them in stacks organized by bed size: twin-size linen in one pile, full-size in another, and so on. Just don’t forget to label the shelf underneath each linen pile with the size. If you’re one of the few talented people out there who can fold sheets nicely, you can keep extra sheets and pillowcases in a nice pile. For everyone else, the best place for those is in a basket as well. The same goes for portacrib sheets and any other stray bedding accessories you have. Tablecloths should be folded nicely and placed in piles, separated by table type or table size, depending on the tables you have. For example, if your dining room and kitchen tables are the same size, separating the cloths by table size is not going to help. In that case, you would make one pile for the kitchen table and one for the dining room. Don’t forget to label the shelf underneath each stack so it’s very clear to see which table each one is for. If you have room in your linen closet to hang a rod, another option for tablecloths is to hang each one on a separate hanger, with a pinned-on slip of paper indicating the size of the cloth. As with any closet that has long shelves that will be used for multiple piles, your linen closet will benefit greatly from shelf dividers. This keeps each pile where it should be without worrying about them falling over and into each other. A good rule of thumb to remember: If your closet starts out with only neat piles and shelves, you will be more motivated to keep it that way.

Sir Moses Haim Montefiore (1784–1885) was a famous philanthropist who was devoted to public service, with a mission to mediate for and intercede on behalf of his brothers. Montefiore never completed his schooling, as at a young age he went to work to help out his family financially. He was employed first by a tea merchant, then by a grocer, and then slowly progressed in the stock market, eventually becoming a broker. He was forced to give up his broker’s license shortly thereafter, though, when he lost all of his clients’ money because of a fraudster he’d invested with. Even though it took him another ten years to get licensed again, he ended up accumulating a fortune on London’s stock market.

BLUE BLOOD

Montefiore and Nathan Mayer Rothschild (son of Mayer Anschel) were brothers-in-law, and at one point, business partners. Their wives were sisters.

Montefiore became a full-fledged baal teshuvah at the age of 43, and from that point and on, he’d travel with a personal shochet to ensure a steady supply of kosher meat. It was one of his many life missions to work against the winds of the Haskalah, and to limit the growth of the Reform movement.

Sir Moses retired from his business at the young age of 40 and devoted the rest of his life — and a large chunk of his fortune — to philanthropy. At 6 feet 3 inches, he was quite the imposing figure, and Montefiore used his impressive demeanor and influence to effect salvation for Jews abroad. He visited the sultan of the Ottoman Empire to use his influence to liberate ten Syrian Jews who were imprisoned after a blood libel. He was granted an audience with the Pope in Rome in an attempt to free a Jewish child who was forcibly converted. He traveled to Russia, Morocco and Romania for similar missions. The oppressed Yidden of Eastern Europe looked up to him as a hero.

HELLO, SIR! The Yiddish world is scattered with institutions named after Sir Moses Montefiore, among them, shuls, cemeteries and educational buildings.

In recognition of his humanitarian work on behalf of Jews, Montefiore was knighted by Queen Victoria, awarding him the honorific “Sir” before his name. That same year, he was elected sheriff of London. He later became high sheriff of Kent and also received baronetcy (another honorable title awarded by the British Crown whose receiver earns the title “Sir”).

Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY, is another very famous memorial. It originally opened in Manhattan on Moses Montefiore’s 100th birthday and went by the name “Montefiore Home for Chronic Invalids.”

One of the most famous Montefiore memorials is the Montefiore Windmill in Yerushalayim, which he built to provide cheap flour to poor Yidden.

Montefiore lived until the age of 100. Both his 99th and 100th birthdays were celebrated in style, with every local charity being beneficiaries of his philanthropy. How surprised he was, at the age of 89, to read his obituary in a local paper. He wrote to the editor saying, “Thank G-d to have been able to hear of the rumor and to read an account of the same with my own eyes, without using spectacles.” This was during a time when the average life expectancy in Britain was less than 50 years.

Montefiore, along with his wife, is buried in a tomb, which is a replicate of Kever Rochel, located near the Montefiore Synagogue in Ramsgate, England (the seaside town where their estate had been). THE MONSEY VIEW / 121

DOVID HAMELECH’S PROMISE CHANGES CANCER DIAGNOSIS Mordechai was in shock. How was he going to tell his wife, his kids? Cancer? But he was so young, only 40! There was so much he had left to do with his life. How did this happen? He had just gone in for a regular physical…which led to tests…which led to this. What could he do? That night, he met up with his Chavrusah at the local Shteible, as usual. Yitzy knew something was wrong right away. “Spill it! You are not concentrating at all- what’s wrong?” So he told him. It felt so good to tell someone and share the burden. Yitzy was deep in thought for a few minutes, and then gently asked, “Have you tried the Tehillim Kollel?” “That does not sound like a doctor,” Mordechai responded suspiciously. “No, it’s not,” said Mordechai, with a chuckle. “But they are an unbelievable organization. They have minyanim of ehrliche men reciting the entire Sefer Tehillim at special places, like Meron, the Kever of the Ribnitzer Rebbe. What does it hurt, sign up!” Mordechai took his chavrusah’s advice and called Tehillim Kollel, asking that they daven that he should be
