YEHUDA ZEV SEGAL ZT”L
We are alarmed and appalled by the horrifying news, that over this past Shabbos Kodesh barbarians desecrated the monument and resting place of the saintly and righteous tzaddik, Rabbi Yehuda Segal זצ״ל, Rosh Yeshiva of Manchester. We cannot erase the Chillul Hashem entirely, but perhaps we can restore at least some of his former dignity. Chazal teach us that we do not erect elaborate tombstones for the righteous because their words are their greatest memorials (Shekalim 2:5).
Therefore, let us embrace the Gaon and tzaddik’s vision, and continue along the path he taught us – to study two halachos of Sefer Chofetz Chaim daily, according to the outline and calendar he arranged. “Our power is only through our mouth” – that is, to guard our mouths from forbidden speech. In the merit of guarding our mouths may Hashem guard His nation and repair the breach of His nation, so the tzaddik may then rest in peace. Writing and signing with reverence. Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky

RE: SMART METERS THE SMART DECISION? (Inbox, Issue 185) Reading a recent letter about smart meters, as well as many of the wonderful health-related articles in your magazine, prompted me to write in. I want to preface by saying that I am all for being informed and educating oneself in regard to health hazards and a wholesome lifestyle. I grew up in a health-conscious home where aluminum is always lined, Teflon not purchased, and microwaves in use only Erev Pesach. High-gluten flour is limited, sea salt used daily, raw sugar the sweetener of choice, and nuts and fruits abound. At least to some degree, I strive to emulate this perfect balance in my home. However, with our efforts to keep a healthy home and limit ingestion and exposure of unhealthy elements comes the realization that things are very often out of our control. The world is full of chemicals and radiation. The foodstuffs we ingest on a daily basis are loaded with not-good-for-yous, and the studies in regard to certain staples vary by the day. Yes, we need to do hishtadlus, but let’s not forget Who is in charge of our health. Yes, do try your best, but when faced with the fact that we no longer farm our own food in the countryside and largely rely on processed food, and that technological advances expose us to things we want to avoid, whisper a tefillah that Hashem watch over us. When giving medication to a child, instead of being anxious about the side effects, ask Him that it be the right thing for the health of your child. Because we can’t do more than try. And daven. P.D.

caused on roads across Monsey, and it was interesting to read about it in your news section. Reading what is causing the problem explains the issue (which helps, even though it doesn’t solve it). I truly hope that the town will do something about fixing the major potholes before spring, because some of them make driving very frightening! S.N.
LINGERING INSPIRATION (Re: Set in Royalty, Issue 183) The article on suedas melavah malkah was inspiring and an eye-opener. Prior to reading it, I never knew that it’s an equal mitzvah for women to wash on Motzei Shabbos as it is for men. The inspiration and information really changed my outlook on Motzei Shabbos. C.R.
PLEASE DON’T KILL MY TREE! I’m writing this letter with tears in my eyes and pain in my heart, watching my tree being shaved of its branches, its bark now exposed. Behind my yard a new condo has appeared, and by law, they are allowed to trim the branches on their side. I understand that. But because nobody is supervising the tree trimmer, he is shaving down my side as well. And despite my trying to stop him, he has continued, saying that his client needs the branches clear for their sukkah. A tree is a living being. It is not just a piece of wood. And when it’s in my yard, please don’t damage it to the point where it will die. And if you are hiring a tree-trimmer, please, please supervise him! R.D.

Parshas Tetzaveh By: Malka Schneps
Rivka was sitting at her niece’s chasunah enjoying her soup and the conversation when Bracha came and sat down next to her. “Rivka, I want to tell you something,” said Bracha. “This might sting a little, but I think you need to hear it.” Rivka smiled politely and braced herself for whatever it was that Bracha felt she “needed to hear.” “Rivka, don’t you think it’s time that you were the one making chasunah? Esty is not getting any younger, and you have other children waiting in line.” Bracha leaned in and added, “I think you need to stop being so picky already and put your daughter’s needs ahead of your own.” Rivka looked around. Every woman at the table was staring at her. What should she answer? Rivka thought of a million things that she could say in response — from divulging Esty’s illness that was preventing her from even thinking of her future at this point, to the fact that none of this was any of Bracha’s business, to letting Bracha know just how wrong it was to speak to anyone this way, especially in public. But Rivka stayed silent. All of Rivka’s years of learning shemiras halashon did not lessen the painful impact of Bracha’s words, but they did train Rivka to control her own response. As difficult as it was, she held her tongue. This week’s parsha first details the special garments worn by the
60 / THE MONSEY VIEW
kohanim, and then discusses korbanos. R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, notes that the Gemara (Zevachim 88) states that the Torah juxtaposes the bigdei kehunah with the korbanos to tell us that the bigdei kehunah bring atonement. Each garment atones for something. For example, the turban atones for arrogance, and the belt atones for improper thoughts. The me’il, a robe from which bells hang, atones for lashon hara. Back in Parshas Va’eira, we noted that the frogs that jumped
Holding back from saying something one should not say is a most difficult feat. into the ovens during Makkas Tzefardei’a were rewarded for their mesiras nefesh — when the other frogs all died, the ones who had jumped into the ovens were spared from death. Contrast that with Makkas Bechoros, during which the dogs did not bark, and they, too, were rewarded, through the mitzvah in the Torah to feed a certain type of non-kosher meat to dogs, which is a mitzvah incumbent upon every generation. The frogs were willing to sacrifice their very lives by jumping into fire for Hashem, yet only that generation of frogs was rewarded. The dogs simply did not bark, yet they were rewarded for all gen-
erations. R’ Dovid of Tolne, zt”l, explains that this seeming discrepancy in rewards shows that staying silent is even harder than jumping into fire. Holding back from saying something one should not say is a most difficult feat. In Even Shleimah (7:1), the Vilna Gaon cites the Midrash that for every moment a person remains silent rather than speak lashon hara, they merit the hidden light that no malach or being can perceive. A reward this great indicates that holding one’s tongue must be extremely difficult, as it says in Pirkei Avos that the reward of a mitzvah is measured according to its difficulty. The day after the chasunah in the story above, Chana’s phone rang. “Chana, weren’t you at the Rosen chasunah last night? I heard something happened between Rivka and Bracha. Do you know anything about it?” asked Chevy. Chana had in fact been seated right at Rivka’s table at the chasunah. She was about to tell Chevy everything when an image came to her mind that made her stop. The image was of Rivka, sitting silent at the table — silent in the face of public humiliation. Chana realized that if Rivka could stay silent and not answer Bracha back, then certainly she could refrain from repeating the story. As difficult as it was, Chana held her tongue… and there is a great light waiting for her.

Mall Expansion and Bridge Tolls Highlighted in Annual State of the County Address Speaking to a crowd of approximately 75 people at the Palisades Mall last Thursday, County Executive Ed Day expressed his support for local business growth, including an expansion at the Palisades Mall. The mall, the eighth largest in the United States, currently encompasses 875,000 square feet, reported The Journal News. A potential extension would grow the size of the mall’s third and fourth floors and would bring jobs and taxes to the local economy, said Day. The mall currently contributes significantly to the local economy, bringing in $21.4 million in property taxes and generating $23.5 million in sales taxes, in addition to giving space to 75 nonprofit organizations and collaborating on 560 community events. Day also said that he would continue lobbying state officials to keep tolls down on the newly constructed Mario Cuomo bridge. Tolls have been frozen at current rates on the bridge until the year 2020, with
no word yet from Albany regarding possible hikes after that time.
Possible Reimbursements Available for Pothole-Related Damages The recent temperatures that have area residents feeling like they are in Florida one day and Antarctica the next aren’t just confusing — they wreak havoc on area roadways, leaving plenty of flat tires and other automotive damages in their wake. But in certain instances, reimbursements are available if you find yourself needing to fix or replace a tire, or facing other auto repairs caused by potholes. Potholes are caused when moisture that seeps into cracks in the roadway freezes, expands and then melts when the weather warms up, morphing small fractures into potholes as cars drive over the weakened areas. A countywide initiative to temporarily repair potholes using a cold patch system was announced last week by County Executive Ed Day and Rockland County Highway Superintendent Skip Vezzetti. Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht said that the local highway department has had multiple crews tackling potholes on a daily basis and will continue as long as the weather permits. More permanent pothole repair work is typically done in the spring using a hot patch system. The first step in obtaining reimbursement, if it can
66 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
be done safely, is taking pictures of the pothole and documenting the date and location of the pothole. Next, a police report must be filed to establish proof of the incident. The third step, if the cost of repairs isn’t covered by insurance, is to identify which agency is tasked with maintaining that particular stretch of roadway. Locally, the New York State Department of Transportation is responsible for Routes 202, 59, 306 and 45, while the Rockland County Highway Department maintains Call Hollow Road, College Road, East Eckerson Road, Forshay Road, Hemion Road, Highview Road, Hungry Hollow Road, Lime Kiln Road, McNamara Road, New County Road, New Hempstead Road, New Pomona Road, North Airmont Road, Old Nyack Turnpike, Pascack Road, Red Schoolhouse Road, Saddle River Road, Sanitorium Road, South Airmont Road, South Monsey Road, Spook Rock Road, Viola Road, West Eckerson Road and Wilder Road. To report potholes or damages to your vehicle, call 800-POTHOLE for state roads (including the New York State Thruway), 638-5060 for Rockland County roadways, and 357-0903 for Town of Ramapo roads.

Simplifying Healthy Eating The Traffic Light Method Whenever the conversation about healthy eating comes up it is always followed closely by talk of calories, proteins, carbs and fats. The world has become obsessed with calories and macronutrients that any discussion involving healthy eating we constantly bring up calories, protein, carbs and fats. But is this true? Are calories and meal nutrient proportions the culprit to the ever growing obese trend? Don't get me wrong having too many calories does make you gain weight. But is that the problem or is the problem something else? When we look at the problem as calories the solution is to restrict calorie intake. This means that all the 100’s of diets designed should help us lose weight. So why do these diets only lead to short term results? They’ve solved our “problem”. They help you lose the weight. But… they don't help you keep it off. At the Smith System we believe that the problem is not the problem rather it is the way you look at the problem. As long as we look at weight loss as a simple equation of calories in vs out. The solution is always going to be to find a way to lowering your calories. May it be the latest diet or the trendiest workout that helps you burn 1,000 calories in just 20 minutes while toning your body. All though these are extremely effective for some reason it doesn't last. Today we’ll discuss a couple of points that will help you realize why we are the way we are and the only way to long term success is by changing the way we look at the problem. Fitness and weight loss were not the biggest concerns back in the day. In fact the only people doing strict eating regiments and specific exercise routines were soldiers or athletes.
processed foods.
I want to help you out.
Seeing as our quality of food is low we lack the pure nutrients our body truly needs. Many may need extra help by taking supplements. This can result in people never feeling satisfied leading to the overconsumption of food.
So I want to introduce you to the “Traffic Light Method” we use to help clients simplify healthy eating.
And being as we aren't active the body’s metabolism slows down — consequently slowing down the way your body digests nutrients into material it can use, which in turn leads to health issue. Oh yeah. Let us not forget the amount of stress each and everyone of us has to deal with from keeping your boss happy to paying the bills to making sure your family has what it needs and so on. All of this leads to us over consuming calories. Focusing on cutting back calories will only help us do one thing. Cut back calories. It doesn't help you become more active. In fact a lot of diets promote doing minimal to no activity at all. It doesn't help you nourish your body with what it needs. In fact by cutting back calories and eating “low calorie” diet foods you are probably removing the few nutrients you were getting from your diet. It doesn't help you deal with stress. In fact the constant worry of the number on a scale. The constant drain on will power to hold yourself back to just eating the same shake yet again — For a lot of people may increase stress. By going on a “diet” you actually getting further away from your goals. If you really want to lose weight and do it for the rest of your life you want to be real with yourself. Tell yourself this isn’t a diet problem. This is a life problem.
As times change we progressed into an era where we are not very active. In fact the only activities we do is from bed to car to work to home to bed.
You will want to find the right tools that will help you find time so you can eat healthy and keep yourself active. It would be beneficial for you to find the right stress management tools so you can manage your stress better. (Be real: stress isn't going away but it sure can be managed a lot better.)
On top of that limited activity that we do the quality of our food has dropped tremendously with the uprise of commercial farming and
At the Smith System we provide each and every one of our clients the right tools they need to be able to live their life and still be healthy and fit. But today I am not here to sell you on the System.
Remember. The problem isn't the amount of calories you consume, the problem is that we have so much to deal with that our health is taking a back seat. When it comes to nutrition instead of looking at food as calories that fuel our body. Let’s try and look at food how our grandparent used to look at it. Food is to enjoy. The only concern is that there is so much “food” around us and it all seems to taste so good all the time. This is where the Traffic Light Method comes in. First thing you want to do is to assess your nutrition habits for a couple of day or so. Long enough that you can pick up a trend of what is going on. Remember this is not a time for you to feel judged and guilty. This is a simple tool to get an idea of what is going on. Once you have a pattern of the types of foods you consume it is time to now organize your food into 3 columns. Green, Yellow and Red. The green list will consist of all the foods that are healthy. Include foods you have control when eating them. You don't tend to overeat on these foods. The yellow list is a list of foods that may not be the best choice but are ok and are also foods that, depending on the situation, you may or may not have control. (i.e. at a party you may overeat whereas at home you may not) The red list is a list of foods that are not healthy for you and you always tend to overeat them. Once you have created your list your goals would be to have the majority of your foods coming from the foods on the green list. In the right occasion to have foods coming from the yellow list. And limit as best as you can the foods that are on the red list. Remember this is a gradual process.

Anyone who relies on public speaking to boost sales — whether it’s a local insurance salesman or politician on the national scene — understands the value of a good pitch and knows the basics of the art. Skilled orators will know to keep a speech short. Begin well. Stick to one coherent idea. End memorably. And most importantly, perhaps, remember that this time belongs to the audience, and not to the speaker.
84 / THE MONSEY VIEW
THE MONSEY VIEW / 85
But what if the stakes are that much higher? What if the subject matter is not car insurance, but weighty political views? What if a speech can change history, or at least reroute it? When it comes to the big players in politics, remembering a list of speechwriting tips and pointers simply won’t cut it. Because how to keep track of what to say when? And which pearls of wisdom to impart where? That’s when the writing and delivery of each speech moves from being a one-man endeavor to the responsibility of an entire team. Please welcome the speechwriters… and teleprompters.
The Prep Speechwriters fill an unusual role in the corridors of Washington and in the annals of history, because their job is somewhat of a paradox. While it is their duty to write speeches that will capture the attention of the audience, and to use words that will inspire, captivate and be worthy of that attention, a huge part of the job is staying true to the voice of the speaker. Sarah Hurwitz, a speechwriter who worked with both Obamas and other highly visible politicians, puts it this way: “I think a great speech is something that says something profoundly true, period. So often, people ask the wrong questions... They ask, ‘What will make me sound smart?’ ‘What will make me sound powerful?’ ‘What will make me sound funny?’ ‘What will make the audience like me?’” Rather, she says, there are other things to ask. “You have to ask … ‘What is the most deeply true thing I can say at this moment?’ Truth has a way of breaking through; it has a way of reaching people that fake-sounding slogans and soundbites really don’t. Even if they’re clever, even if they’re witty, they don’t have the same weight and import.” So how does this process work? First, a speechwriter, or speechwriters, sits down with the presi-
86 / THE MONSEY VIEW
dent to hear what it is that he wants to say. Then the speechwriter reviews older speeches on the same subject, incorporates new information, and works alongside the policy team to create the message the president wants to impart. While it is the job of the policy team to review the stance, opinions and views included in the speech, it is the responsibility of the speechwriting team to “trim the fat off” the speech, suggest which story or fact to include to the make the speech memorable, and ensure that the voice of the speech is
true to the voice of the president. Then the speechwriter reviews the speech with the president — and accepts the inevitable criticism before working on revisions. While there is no greater platform for a speechwriter’s work than the national political scene, there is a flip side
A speechwriter’s work is mostly under the radar, because who gets the credit after a masterpiece of a speech is delivered? to that honor. On one hand, working for the most powerful person in the country is pretty cool, but on the other hand, a speechwriter’s work is mostly under the radar, because who gets the credit after a masterpiece of a speech is delivered? Why, the president, of course! And even though this is the way it should be — after all, these are the president’s thoughts shared, and not the speechwriter’s — what happens when a catchy line snags the attention of the press, of the nation, of the world? At that point, who remembers the team of speechwriters who sat, huddled over their desks, cups of coffee at their elbows, scratching and revising one draft after the next? Hopefully the president does...

that he can familiarize himself with the material. At the same time, aides and members of the Secret Service prepare the venue, the stage and the podium. And sometimes… the teleprompters. What is this tool that raises so many opinions, both for and against it? The first teleprompters, which were simply mechanical versions that worked with
momentous speeches, such as their inaugural, State of the Union, or Oval Office address. Obama, on the other hand, used his teleprompter for routine announcements, which always snipped a bit of authenticity off whatever it was he was saying. Even though all agree that the content of a speech matters way more than the method of its delivery, how
How sincere does a speaker sound when a teleprompter malfunctions and he loses his words — however heartfelt — halfway through a point? actual print on a paper scroll, were introduced in 1950. Only two years later, teleprompters were put to use at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, and in 1954, Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first president to use the teleprompter at a State of the Union address. Over the next few decades, the teleprompter became more advanced, until the first computer-based teleprompter was introduced in the 1980s. Today’s teleprompters are one-way mirrors, which means the speaker sees the words displayed on his side of the glass, while the audience simply sees through it. This creates the illusion of eye contact, even while the speaker is reading his words off the screen. So why the sudden surge of interest in the last decade? The reason is most probably President Obama’s habitual overuse of teleprompters. While previous commanders in chief used them on occasion, they usually did so only when addressing the nation during their most
88 / THE MONSEY VIEW
can passionate or emotion-laden statements seem perfectly sincere when the lines are being read off a screen, word for word? Obama’s habit went so far that at one point during his presidency, rumors spread throughout the nation that he’d used a teleprompter to address sixth-graders during a school visit. It turned out that the telling snapshot had been Photoshopped, but the damage was done. Obama’s use of teleprompters had turned into a joke. Of course, there were those who praised Obama’s use of the teleprompters, saying that he used them simply because he was good at it! While some orators find using the teleprompter awkward, Obama excelled at flawlessing delivering speech after scripted speech. He had the ability to confidently walk the stage, eyes moving from teleprompter to teleprompter — which looked as though he was connecting to the audience at every moment. After all, no need
to look at notes now! Those who found Obama’s reliance on teleprompters praiseworthy claimed that the teleprompter acts just like an outline on paper does. However, others argued that that when using a teleprompter, eye contact may simply mean, “I’m reading my notes and just pretending.” This is only underscored during moments of teleprompter failure. How sincere does a speaker sound when a teleprompter malfunctions and he loses his words — however heartfelt — halfway through a point? (And how frightening must it be to lose the only copy of the speech at the podium?) But the patterns of history may show the reason for President Obama’s reliance on teleprompters. While President Bush Jr., didn’t do well with teleprompters, and preferred using index cards highlighting the key points of the speech, he was well known for his “Bushisms,” or his too-frequent gaffes and malapropisms while speaking to the public (see next article). Perhaps that was why Obama was so wary of ad-libbing. And since he was so skilled at reading off teleprompters naturally, looking perfectly truthful and sincere all the while, then why risk the potential for nationwide embarrassment? But then the direction of history shifted again, and onto the national scene came Trump, the master of ad-libbing. And after he was elected, the critics appeared all over again, only to say, “Where, oh where, is President Trump’s teleprompter?!” Because perhaps there is an advantage to staying on track, after all…

Being in public service doesn’t guarantee that one is a flawless public speaker. Here we explore gaffes made by popular people at the podium — some funny, some embarrassing, and some an axe to their political popularity.
THE MONSEY VIEW / 95
resident Ronald Reagan had a rather high blooper rate, and despite this (or perhaps because of this human factor, which he not only didn’t defend, but actually joked about) he enjoyed unusually high approval ratings and the admiration of citizens across the country.
Reagan’s most publicized mistake at the mike was the announcement he made while performing a sound check prior to a scheduled address. In his typical humorous way, he joked to the technicians: “My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” The year was 1984, and it was at the height of the Cold War. Just a harmless off-the-record inside joke... But it was no longer funny when the recording was leaked to the public and became world news. And Russia, to be sure, did not take it too kindly, exacerbating an already strained relationship between the two countries. A year after the incident, Raegan eloquently expressed himself to business leaders in the White House, saying, “Nuclear war would be the greatest tragedy, I think, ever experienced by mankind in the history of mankind.” Later, at a Republican Convention he misquoted John Adams by confidently saying, “Facts are stupid things.” Well they may be, but Adams called them “stubborn.” In 1987, when asked whether taxes should be increased, Reagan got lost in a sea of words, or perhaps he just simply didn’t know what to say — or what he’d been asked! “The problem is the deficit is — or should I say — wait a minute, the spending, I should say, of gross national product, forgive me — the spending, I should say, of gross national
96 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
product, forgive me — the spending is roughly 23 to 24 percent.” Now you’re talking numbers, Mr. President. “So that it is in — it what is increasing while the revenues are staying proportionately the same and what would be the proper amount they should, that we should be taking from the private sector.”
***** Although Reagan had his misspeaks and uncomfortable moments at the mike, the king of all gaffers was surely President George W. Bush. Not only did he have a following that stood rapt each time he spoke, waiting to pounce on a blooper that was inevitable to come out of his mouth, but a word was even coined for his grand slips of the tongue — Bushisms. One of the most popular Bushisms, which stuck to Bush for the rest of the presidency, was when he coined a word by boasting, “They misunderestimated me.” Bush referred back to this slip of the tongue at a later time, saying “Now, ladies and gentlemen, you have to admit that in my sentences I go where no man has gone before,” and then took credit for coining the term misunderstanding, instead of what he really created: misunderestimated. There we go again… Another memorable blooper Bush said, thoughtfully and deliberately enunciating each word while gazing at the camera, was

Common Verbal Blunders MALAPROPISMS: The usage of an incorrect word in place of a similar-sounding word, resulting in a nonsensical, often funny, utterance. Recently, Welsh Conservative leader encouraged his party to make “breakfast a success” (meaning Brexit), and former Irish head of government Ahern asked his country not to “upset the apple tart.” Former Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley spoke about a “tantrum bicycle” (intending to say tandem), and perhaps worst of all was when Rick Perry described states as “lavatories of innovation and democracy” (in place of “laboratories”). George W. Bush also had his share of malapropisms, once referring to a “peacekeeper” as a “pacemaker” and at another time warning that America “cannot let terrorists and rogue nations hold this nation hostile” instead of “hostage.” NEOLOGISMS: A new word, which is typically a combination of two existing words or a shortening or distortion of an existing word. Some examples of common neologisms are chillax (chill + relax), smog (smoke + fog), spork (spoon + fork), brunch (breakfast + lunch). Although some end up entering the dictionary, when a new neologism is coined, it’s usually only the coiner who actually knows what it’s intended to be. SPOONERISMS: A speech error where two words or parts of words are switched in a sentence or phrase. Some examples are “a nosey little cook” to describe a reading corner; “a well-boiled icicle” for a bike that’s ready for a ride; and “You have hissed all my mystery lectures,” to the student who played hooky during history class. Two embarrassing broadcasts to the ears of thousands of listeners in the early 1900s involved spoonerisms: One was, “All the world was thrilled by the marriage of the Duck and Doochess of Windsor,” and another was the mispronunciation of President Herbert Hoover’s name as “Hoobert Heever.”

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.” Let’s just say it was a good thing Americans didn’t think of Bush as someone malicious, because had it been someone else, they may have all gone looking for their passports... How would you address someone who doesn’t speak your language? Bush had it down pat. Trying to catch the attention of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, he called out, “Amigo! Amigo!” How else would one address an Italian official? Questions seemed to be grammatically challenging for him. “Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?” was one popular error that earned him quite a bit of ridicule, further reinforced by, ”The important question is, how many hands have I shaked?” ''I know how hard it is to put food on your family,'' he commisserated with one audience, and when proclaiming several weeks after 9/11 that normalcy will once again reign in U.S. airports (probably knowing that the country was in desperate need of a good laugh to lift their spirits), he said, "I am here to make an announcement that this Thursday, ticket counters and airplanes will fly out of Ronald Reagan Airport." There were many who spent Bush’s entire presidency collecting Bushisms, but they didn’t do it to ridicule the president. Jacob Weisberg, who authored a book on the phenomenon, said. “People often assume that… I must despise George W. Bush,” he wrote. “To the contrary, Bushisms fill me with affection for the man... I find the Bush who flails with words, unlike the Bush who flails with policy, to be an endearing character... Bush treats words the way he treated recalcitrant European leaders: When they won’t do what he wants them to, he tries to bully them into submission… “The president's verbal stumbles have only made me like him better. It's hard to despise someone who just wants 'to make the pie higher' or who says he won't answer your question, ‘Neither in French nor in English. Nor in Mexican.'” It seems it was not only the act of public speaking, but being on a stage in general that did something to Bush’s brain. After a press conference in Beijing, China, in 2005, attempting to make a hasty exit at the right of stage, Bush encountered two locked doors. After a few awkward attempts at trying to make them give way and facing the fact, with all cameras trained on him, that the way out was not through those doors, he turned to the reporters and joked, "I was trying to escape. Obviously, it didn't work." Facing a locked door wasn’t as bad as his father George H. W. Bush’s experience in the Far East, who vomited at a banquet held in Japan — straight into the lap of Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa! He had a word coined in his honor, too, as “Bushusuru,” literally “to do the Bush thing” (to vomit in public), entered the Japanese language. Mention of Bush Sr.’s public disgrace isn’t complete
without an honorable mention to his vice president Dan Quayle, whose tendency to blunder was highlighted when he attended a spelling bee at an elementary school while in office. When one of the contestants, 12-year-old William Figueroa, spelled the word “potato on the blackboard, Quayle was quick to point out, that an “e was needed at the end.
***** Sometimes the biggest flop in a speech is not what is said, but what is left unsaid, as was proven by Rick Perry during one of the debates of presidential candidates during the 2016 election season. After listing two of the three government departments he intended to shut down, Perry encountered a mind-numbing experience of brain freeze. Desperately fishing for the third department, he finally admitted that he couldn’t think of it, after which he shrugged and said, “Oops. It did not take too long for his campaign to be over. President Obama wasn’t notable for slips of the tongue at the podium, but his vice president, Joe Biden, once clearly expressed just how riveting he was finding the president’s speech on the budget deficit by dozing off for a full 30 seconds as Obama spoke. It wasn’t Biden’s only faux pas. His age was perhaps apparent when he expressed his hope for a successful past by saying, “I refuse to accept the notion that the United States of America is not going to lead the world economically throughout the 20th century. Al Gore never did end up making it to the top, but still managed to leave some memorable bloopers for posterity. For someone who is an environmentalist extraordinaire, we’d expect him to know a thing or two about animals. Instead he told his audience, “A zebra doesn’t change its spots. More embarrassing to the president than to himself, Vice President Gore tried complimenting President Clinton publicly by saying, "Of all the good things I could say about President Bill Clinton, I could tell you about the many, many times when I have seen him — especially in the early years — nearly buckle under the pressure of this office, but never do so." President Clinton surely appreciated his kind words. The mistakes public figures have made in public were quite often hilarious, but let’s be real. Would any of us be able to perform flawlessly when putting up with such a great level of linguistic scrutiny? When hundreds of listeners comb through each word in search of a verbal blunder to share with the entire world, is a perfect record really possible? And then there is the flip side: politicians who say just the right things, countless times a day — such as the time the presidential seal fell off the podium while President Obama was speaking. He handled it gracefully by saying, “That's all right, all of you know who I am, to the great amusement of the audience. But who’s noticing those or looking out for them?

“A stutterer has a special neshamah,” Rabbi Yanky Kaufman says. With his acquaintance of over 350 frum stutterers, he certainly is qualified to make this declaration. Kaufman is a stuttering specialist treating clients from age 12 and up, based in Lakewood, New Jersey. With his impressive accomplishments — an overwhelming majority of success stories — you’d be surprised to learn that he never studied in college and has no initials trailing after his name. Kaufman knows what it’s like to stutter, because he stuttered for over two decades of his life. And he knows what it’s like to emerge from behind those shutters, because he did so, amazingly enough without the aid of the 10 stuttering specialists he has consulted

in his stuttering career. From when he began to speak, Kaufman suffered from a heavy stutter. In the first few years of his life, his parents tried the standard procedures: first insurancecovered therapies, and when those didn’t prove successful, private therapists who visited him in their home. However, to their immense frustration, there were no results. Childhood made way to teenhood, and Yanky approached his much anticipated but dreaded bar mitzvah. The months leading to his bar mitzvah were an agonizing stretch of anxiety. All Kaufman recalls about his bar mitzvah is his heavy stuttering through the drasha and the mazel tovs. He doesn’t remember the gifts, the fanfare or the attention that every other 13-year-old boy enjoys. Over the years Kaufman tried it all: He consulted with people who had experience with stuttering, grazed the library for books, and experimented with methods touted by specialists boasting 96.9 percent success rates. After no success, he figured he was in the 3.1 percent bracket. For yeshivah Kaufman flew to Eretz Yisroel to learn in the Mir. While in the country, he consulted with the top specialists in the field, but nothing helped. He also traveled the land, visiting gedolim and mekubalim to ask
for brachos and advice. At that point, Kaufman threw his efforts into building his self-esteem, hoping this would ease his anxiety and improve his stutter. He devoured self-help books, and they helped him on a holistic level. For the first time, his stuttering did somewhat decrease, but it still wasn’t the ultimate solution. Soon Kaufman got married and moved to Eretz Yisroel, where he continued to learn at the Mir. While he gave up being cured through the aid of people, world-famous or not, he didn’t lose hope that Hashem would bring him the yeshuah one day. “I had been davening for it for over 18 years, three times a day!” Kaufman says. Before every yom tov or occasion, the festivity sprouted tentative hope in his heart that maybe this eis ratzon would herald his redemption. One day, he received a phone call from a family member who told him about a stuttering baFor the first chur who’d dropped out time in his life, of yeshivah. He called the Israeli boy, who had nothing in common with him other than his slightly heavier stutter. After they scheduled a time to meet for their chizuk talk, a thought popped into Kaufman’s head. A brilliant method for overcoming stuttering began to form in his mind. At the end of their little talk, Kaufman encouraged the bachur to try the new method he had come up with just moments earlier. After seeing that it was

can rabbanim in Eretz Yisroel he could think of. He gave his 30-second elevator pitch, explaining that he had a straightforward, logical method to help people overcome stuttering. Within weeks his calendar was packed. Stuttering specialists sent their own family members to him, and soon offered to pay Kaufman to train them in his method. Kaufman’s success has grown exponentially over the past three and a half years, as people fly in from all over the world on a weekly basis to find the solution they are desperately seeking.
STUTTERING THERAPY Kaufman demystifies the world of stuttering therapy. After extensive research he learned that everything the stuttering therapy world has to offer is old school and that the field is prone to much failure. What about the 96.9 percent success rate? Clients will often succeed at talking stutter-free in the therapist’s office, but it doesn’t extend to their real lives, where anxiety exacerbates their stutter. Furthermore, Kaufman hasn’t yet Almost all stut- encountered a speterers are mas- cialist who follows up enough on their cliters at hiding ents, and therefore, their stutter by they cannot gauge if their method is sucthe classic mocessful in the long dus operandi: term. As Kaufman clevavoidance. erly puts it, “They treat the stutter, not the stutterer.” What makes Kaufman’s program unique is that he offers the only completely natural method that can easily become second nature. He has a systemic approach that integrates his program in real life, and he also developed a sophisticated follow-up program. He also trained in passionate professionals, who are themselves parents of children who stutter, to guide other parents on what they can do for their young children. With his extensive acquaintance with stutterers, Kaufman has learned that a majority of his clients have tried three to four therapists before him. This is an indication of just how much failure is par for the course. On the other hand, Kaufman does not know of one client who has visited another therapist after him. Kaufman’s golden rule in looking into stuttering specialists is to ask for three references. He says it is perfectly reasonable to expect that a specialist provide names of three people they’ve treated in the last year who will be proud to display their stutterfree speech.

OPEN THE SHUTTERS With such visceral identification with the challenge of stuttering, Kaufman is extraordinarily dedicated and driven to help his clients. What’s it like to stutter? Kaufman opens a window to this shuttered world. “The struggle of stuttering is more in what they don’t say than what they do say,” Kaufman explains. Stutterers feel that they cannot realize their true potential because of this immense barrier. Even parents may not appreciate how much their child is suffering, because they don’t know how much the stutter is holding them back. “Stuttering affects almost all aspects of life,” he says. Non-stutterers do not understand this, never having experienced a lack of this vital gift of speech fluency. Once freed of this incredible impediment in their lives, former stutterers report feeling like they’ve switched from a side street to the highways; they can suddenly get much farther. Some stutterers suffer more from their difficulty than others, but this does not necessarily depend on the severity of their disfluency. The question Kaufman always asks his potential clients is: How much does the stutter bother you? “Classifying a stutter as heavy or slight is not dependent on how it sounds, or whether the stutter emerges as a hesitation, repetition or prolongation. A stutter’s severity depends on how much it affects the stutterer.” Kaufman has seen clients with such a slight stutter that it was practically undetectable in their speech, but only the client knew how much it inhibited them. In their desperation, stutterers will learn how to cover up their stutter by switching up difficult words, or even languages, if it eases their speech at the moment. Almost all stutterers are masters at hiding their stutter by the classic modus operandi: avoidance. With this we touch on the major source
of angst and suffering in stutterers’ lives. For example, stutterers will avoid receiving aliyos in shul through a myriad of creative tactics: They may run to the back of the shul, inform the gabbai not to give them an aliyah, leave the shul, lock themselves up in the restrooms, daven in the ezras nashim during the week, or remove their tallis and tefillin for a slimmer chance of being the “lucky” pick. One stutterer confided that he always kept one finger on the page of Shemoneh Esrei, so that if he would be called for an aliyah, he’d studiously stare into that page so others would think he was davening. A client told Kaufman that due to fear of being chosen for an aliyah, he hadn’t heard leining in shul for ten years! Stutterers often take the harder route of silence rather than attempting to speak. They will sooner forgo their favorite condiment than ask for it at the store, or walk in pouring rain rather than ask for a ride.
HELP, DON’T HINDER Stutterers’ suffering is mostly bolted behind heavy shutters. The least others can do is to be sensitive and smart. Don’t engage those who stutter in conversation in public; find a private spot for that. When in a group of people, ask yes/no questions to keep them involved without pressuring them to speak. Realize that your obvious discomfort drives up a stutterer’s anxiety and will make the stutter even worse, and that it is generally insulting to finish up their words for them. “Sometimes only after 25 years can we realize the reason for our greatest challenge and how it can be used to help others,” Rabbi Yanky Kaufman finishes, without a stutter. SPEECH ON SHABBOS | PART 2
We mentioned last week that even though it is assur for someone to mention on Shabbos that he will perform a melacha (or other things that are assur to do on Shabbos, whether mid’rabbanan or mid’Oraisa) tomorrow, nevertheless, if there is a mutar way to perform the act as well, then it is mutar to say it.1 Even if both the speaker and listener know that he really intends to do it the assur way, since he doesn’t verbalize it, it would be considered hirhur (thought), which is mutar on Shabbos. Let’s look at other examples where the poskim apply this idea.
he will be traveling or that he will be going by plane or car.5 Furthermore, in this case, even though he is mentioning the fact that his friend is in another city, and it is known that that city is outside of the techum, it would still be mutar to say it on Shabbos. The reason is that since it is possible to set up houses (that are at least four amos by four amos, within seventy amos and four tefachim of each other) beginning from the city he is in up until the city he is traveling to, thus eliminating the halachic problem of traveling outside the techum on Shabbos,6 it is not explicit from his words that he is leaving the techum. He didn’t actually say he is leaving the techum — but only
Speaking about traveling This halacha is very relevant when it comes to mentioning one’s travel plans on Shabbos. One may not 1 say, “I am flying tomorSee Shulchan Aruch 307:8. See Biur Halacha 307:8 “assur lomar.” row” or even “I am travel2 See Aruch Hashulchan 307:21. Mishnah Berurah 307:30. Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchasa. But see Chazon ing tomorrow” because it Ovadia, Shabbos, vol. 6, p. 60, who brings in the name of Megillas Sefer Hachadash a tzad to be meikel. is clear from his words that 3 See Shulchan Aruch HaRav 307:15. he will be going on a plane 4 See Shulchan Aruch 307:8 and Shulchan Aruch HaRav 307:15. Aruch Hashulchan 307:21. or car, which is assur to do 5 on Shabbos.2 Also, one is Some hold that if one says he is going to a place that is very far then it is considered as explicitly mentioning that he is using transportation, which is assur (see Orchos Shabbos vol. 1, p. 340, footnote 19, not allowed to say that he in the name of Rav Shmuel Auerbach, zt”l). However, there are a few reasons to allow one to be meikel. is leaving the techum after Firstly, some hold that this is still not considered explicit in his speech (see Ashrei Ha’Ish and Hilchos Shabbos because that is asShabbos B’Shabbos, vol. 4, p. 60, footnote, in the name of Rav Elyashiv, zt”l, and Shemiras Shabbos 3 sur to do on Shabbos. K’hilchasah 29:68). Secondly, one can also go by ship in certain situations in a mutar way (see Aruch However, one may say “I Hashulchan 307:21, Shulchan Aruch 248:3, Orchos Shabbos, vol. 1, p. 340). Furthermore, some hold that one can even say he is traveling by car because in following certain conditions (the driver and passengers am going to visit my friend are goyim and not doing it for him and other conditions), one can even do it on Shabbos (see Chazon in another city tomorrow.” Ovadia, Shabbos, vol. 6, p. 60, in the name of Megillas Sefer hachadash). Finally, even though it is not This is mutar even if both the accepted opinion, we can metzaref the opinion of those who hold one can even mention melacha he and the listener know explicitly if it does not contribute to getting the melacha done at all (see Biur Halacha, siman 307, “v’chen he will be driving or flying lo yomar,” Aruch Hashulchan 307:22). Therefore one who is meikel has whom to rely on. With regard to the issur of leaving the techum, see above. because that information 6 is only hirhur (thought) and See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 398:5–6. wasn’t related explicitly 7 See Shulchan Aruch HaRav 307:15. According to the Bach (263:3) and Taz (263:3) there must be the possibilthrough speech.4 Even if ity to build it, but according to Shulchan Aruch HaRav (307:15) and Aruch Hashulchan (307:21), this isn’t he mentions a place that needed. is so far that anyone would 8 See Shulchan Aruch HaRav 307:4, 13, and Chayei Adam 61:6 that assur hiring even without setting a price. use transportation to get See Biur Halacha 306, “v’davka l’daber,” regarding if the issur is only if they agreed on a price. there, many poskim still 9 Ben Ish Chai II Vayishlach 2. said he is going to another city. Even if the listener knows there are no houses along the way, it is still mutar because knowing this fact is only hirhur, which is mutar on Shabbos.7 Therefore, someone in America may say, “I am going to England tomorrow,” but may not say, “I am traveling to England tomorrow” or “I am flying to England tomorrow” or “I am leaving the techum to go to England tomorrow.”

Mentioning melacha and hiring One shouldn’t tell his friend or a taxi driver to drive over after Shabbos and pick him up, because he is mentioning a melacha. Furthermore, this can also be considered hiring someone, which is assur to do on Shabbos.8 But he may say, “Can you come to me tonight?” This is mutar because, firstly, he is not mentioning an explicit melacha (he is not mentioning driving), and also, he is phrasing it in a question form, which is not an explicit verbal expression of hiring. This is true even if both he and his friend know his true intention, because as mentioned before, this was not explicitly said and was only hirhur.9

If you’ve ever been to a professional play or have heard a speech in a well-designed auditorium, you know that the experience can be a far cry from a program taking place in a school lunchroom. Sweetness factor aside, most school lunchrooms aren’t specifically designed to accommodate presentations. Auditoriums, on the other hand, are carefully crafted by teams of specialists.
ACOUSTICS One of the most important aspects of an audience member’s experience is that of acoustics. Acoustics is a term that emcompasses all aspects of sound, from the sound waves themselves, to absorption and reverberation of sound, to the interplay between them all. Here are some ways auditoriums are designed to enhance the listening experience.
MULTI-LEVEL SEATING
It was the Greeks who discovered that multi-leveled seating enhances the clarity of sound. Their amphitheaters — home to events too horrific to detail — were designed with the seating rising level by level. This served three purposes.
1.
2.
3.
The highest level served as a breaker against outside noises.
The steps between rows caused sound waves to bounce off their surface, enhancing acoustic interplay.
Sound waves were more easily able to travel to those in the back, as they were not absorbed by the people in front.
CONSTRUCTION
Once sound waves are produced, they are either absorbed into surrounding objects or bounce off of them and travel further. When sound waves are prematurely absorbed or reverberate for too long, listening experience is distorted and the mind cannot clearly process what is being heard. Knowing how to achieve the perfect balance is what makes acoustical engineering an art.
114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Rear walls and balcony seating have a tendency to reflect sound directly back to the speaker/performer. Materials such as fabric or sound damping panels are used to absorb sound waves.
Seating, too, is important for appropriate sound absorption. For this reason (though comfort might be also be a factor!), padding is often used in fixed seating in auditoriums.
Curves serve to greatly amplify sound. Ceiling height affects amplification as well, with higher ceilings dispersing sound, resulting in lower volume.
Acoustic fiberglass, foam and fabric are great sound damping materials, whereas hard, non-porous materials, such as wood and most metals, are great at being sound reflective.
Correctly combining materials and design concepts results in rich sound with little echo. (It can be quite stylish, too!)
VIEW A stage, of course, is designed to guide focus toward the presenter, and and often, to give the presenter some added height (and probably confidence, too). But have you thought about the seating? Going back to amphitheater design, we find that most modern auditoriums have seating designed in a fan around the stage, along with the rows being elevated. This enables viewers to see everything without having to crane their necks.
You probably never thought about it, but lighting plays a major factor in your viewing experience. From the dimmed lights near your seat to spotlights on stage, each moment of lighting is controlled through a lighting control console. Special effects such as colored lighting or flashes of light can transform an event from a simple speech to a spectacular show.
Paint, too, matters. It is common for auditoriums to feature darker colored paint (and fabrics, for sound absorption, of course) in order to prevent glare from the lighting on stage. While lighter colors reflect light, black, especially, absorbs light well.
