(Re: Choosing a Torah Lifestyle, Issue 188) I very much enjoyed last week’s issue, which covered a kollel lifestyle. Reading about the woman who bought her husband a Shas struck a chord because a similar thing happened in our family. My son-in-law is a yungerman who learns whenever he can, and he is no longer in kollel today only because he needs to feed his family and pay the bills. However, learning Torah takes precedence at all other times, and my daughter knows how much his learning means to him. At one point, she was looking to buy him a gift, and instead of purchasing something more trivial, she went out and bought him the complete set of ArtScroll Shas, which was on sale and priced at $1,300 instead of $2,000. This gift was a complete surprise, and her husband’s joy upon opening the box — and her joy upon watching him — was indescribable. An interesting thing then happened: He pulled out one sefer to inspect, and was amazed to find that it was the very masechta he was in middle of learning. Thank you for such a beautiful publication. C.S.

BEWARE OF A SCAM I’m very sad to say that I’ve heard of a scam that has the potential for absolute disaster should a family fall prey. In each of the 50 states, it has been reported that individuals posing as Child Protective Service (CPS) agents have arrived at people’s homes without warning, demanding to seize their children. Some of the so-called “agents” even carried weapons and had files labeled with the name of the child in question. They tried to intimidate people into giving them their children. Due to quick thinking and awareness of rights (should the CPS “agent” have been real), parents were able prevent the unthinkable from happening. Of course, we pray that neither fake nor real CPS officers knock on any door, but should they, we must know and exercise our rights, as they can prevent difficulties with the real CPS and/or hopefully stop an imposter. • A CPS agent may not enter your home unless you give permission or they have a search warrant or a court order. Even if they arrive with a police officer, you do not have to let them in without seeing the warrant or court order. • Should a court order/warrant be shown to you, ask for details, such as the name of the agent and the name of their supervisor. Look up the number of CPS and confirm that the agent is who he says he is. Do not let strangers into your home without proof! You can even threaten to call the police. Imposters have been running away at the threat of police involvement. • Do not answer questions or engage in conversation. You have the right to record the conversation and have a legal representative with you during an investigation. One should never, ever hand over a child without verifying 1) that the agent is real, and 2) that they have proper documentation. May none of us ever know the pain of CPS agents on our doorstep, whether or not they are legitimate. A Parent

Fat isn't the problem it is the symptom of the problem Achieving long term weight loss success seams to be everyones goal.
The strategy and tactics may change for the situation. But the principle stay the same.
Out of everyone that lose weight only about 5%
This is one of the many reason the weight loss industry
manage to keep it off.
as you know it is failing you.
Do the 5% have a secret ingredient that the rest of us don't know?
Instead of focusing on creating the proper foundation
Yes and no. Yes. They do things differently. But no, what they do isn't a secret and it isn't unique to them. With hard work and persistence you will be part of the 5%. I wouldn't be surprised if you find that once you become successful in your health you will start be successful in other areas of your life. You see, success is universal. In order to achieve success, on any caliber, in any area of life, the same principle apply.
based on the principles of life, we are focusing on strategies and tactics. It is like having a tree with bad root and you want the leaves to be green. You decide to paint the leaves green. The only way the leaves are going to stay green is if you constantly put in the work and paint the leaves. Had you taken the time, practice patience and consistency work at the cause of the problem, the roots themselves. The leaves on the tree would be green without you lifting a finger. Stop painting dead leaves green and start to focus on the root issue‌ your lifestyle!

Pekudei By: Malka Schneps
I was very close to Mrs. Klein* from Williamsburg. Even if I were to use her real name, you probably would not have recognized it. She never became famous, yet more than three thousand people came to be menachem avel her family when she was niftar. These were the people she and her husband had quietly helped over the years. Although by the numbers she and her husband were quite wealthy, one would never know this by looking into their home. The Kleins owned their building, yet they confined themselves to a small three-bedroom apartment. One apartment was turned into a hachnasas orchim apartment as per a rebbe’s advice. In one of the rental apartments, the husband was niftar, leaving an almanah with eleven yesomim. The Kleins not only allowed the family to continue living in the apartment rentfree, but they supported the family and helped marry off each and every one of the children. The third and final apartment in the building was occupied by a family whose father had a serious mental health issue. One day, the family simply stopped paying rent. The Kleins never asked them to leave. This is the backdrop to this remarkable family’s story. At the shivah, I heard from some of the people they helped from their humble home. One woman described how the Kleins had come to visit her apartment for some reason. As they were speaking, Mrs. Klein looked around and took note: A plastic table and chairs stood in the dining room, and she saw no other furniture. Mrs.
102 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Klein asked about the furniture, and the woman assured her that they were fine with what they had. Mrs. Klein pressed further, asking if they had a washer and dryer for laundry. The woman replied that they did not, but she was okay with shlepping it somewhere else to wash. Mrs. Klein did not say a word, but soon afterward deliveries began to arrive, bringing brand-new furniture, and a brand-new washer and dryer. This was the story of just one of the thousands. As I was very close to the family, I helped out in the kitchen during shivah. The kitchen was the size of a walk-in closet, and the cabinets looked to be at least 40 years old. Oddly, during the week of shivah, cabinet doors suddenly began to fall off the walls. One of the Kleins’ married daughters confided to me that the married children had all begged their mother to allow them to break down a wall and enlarge and renovate her kitchen, but their mother had been almost in tears at the suggestion. “How could you suggest such a thing?” she’d cried. “How could I allow $30,000 to be wasted on my kitchen when that money could be used to help so many people?” But now, the kitchen that had held together for Mrs. Klein for so many decades, began to fall apart — right during the week of shivah. Parshas Pekudei begins with an exact accounting of all the gold, silver and copper donated by Klal Yisroel for the construction of the Mishkan. The parsha concludes with the Mishkan being completed, and the Shechinah coming to rest upon
it. There is a connection between the honesty and integrity with which the Mishkan was constructed and the fact that the Shechinah came to rest upon it. Sforno explains that it was not the gold or silver within the Mishkan that drew down the Shechinah, noting that the First Beis Hamikdash had far more wealth, yet the Shechinah was less revealed within it than in the Mishkan, and that the Second Beis Hamikdash was even more grandiose, yet the Shechinah was even less present. Sforno concludes that it was not the size of the buildings or the vastness of the wealth poured into them that determined that the Shechinah would rest there; rather, it was the intentions and actions of the people in building and using the structure. This concept is relevant today even though we do not currently have a Beis Hamikdash. Commenting on the pasuk, “V’asu li mikdash v’shachanti b’socham — Make Me a Mikdash and I will dwell in them (Shemos 25:8),” Alshich notes that we should make a Mikdash in our hearts. Sefer Nefesh Hachaim (1:4) explains that every person is a microcosm of the Beis Hamikdash, with the heart corresponding to the Kodesh Hakodashim. The phrase “mikdash me’at” has been used to refer to the beis midrash, the home and the heart. By conducting our lives with integrity in all three areas, may we be zoche that the Shechinah find a dwelling place among us, and may we be zoche to the third and final Beis Hamikdash and a time when the Shechinah will never again leave us.

Airmont Mayor and Trustees Exit Ballot in Face of Fraud Allegations Less than three weeks away from the spring elections, which take place on March 19 in certain villages, the Village of Airmont election scene took a surprising turn. Airmont Mayor Philip Gigante and his two trustee running mates removed themselves from the ballot after being challenged in court over allegations that the 431 signatures on their petition that enabled their entrance to the ballot were fraudulently obtained, The Journal News reported. Just before acting Supreme Court Justice Sherri Eisenpress was to hear testimony on the petition challenge, Gigante admitted that they had insufficient petition signatures. The Preserve Airmont group, on whose ticket they would be running, alleged that they “made the decision to withdraw” simply because they did not wish “to put our supporters through these ludicrous interrogations, nor put our families through the enormous expense of the frivolous and
unnecessary legal battle.” Yossi Gestetner, an activist in the frum community, accused the mayor and his team of attempted election fraud, calling their withdrawal “a stunning admission. This is the Preserve [Airmont] side who is busy yelling how corrupt chassidim are.” The many challenges in regard to the signatories that they faced included that some provided incomplete or untrue residence address (some were even nonexistent); that dates were incomplete, missing or inaccurate; and that some signatories did not provide complete and true names, among other claims. Yehuda Zorger, a local Airmont resident, said, “How ironic is it that
Preserve always claims to stand for enforcing and making sure no laws are broken. Now we know that the mayor and his board personally committed fraud here.” Their departure opens the door to a new mayor as well as a change on the Board of Trustees, which currently faces two lawsuits filed by Orthodox Jewish groups regarding a controversial building moratorium and updated zoning plan.
DA Candidate Targets Chassidic Schools Hoping to smash the Jewish community’s bloc vote to smithereens, a recently announced candidate who hopes to become Rockland County’s next district attorney declared that chassidic schools are engaging in criminal behavior by not providing students with a full secular education. In a statement made to the Haverstraw Democratic Committee, employment and civil rights lawyer Mike Diedrich announced his candidacy by categorizing the “insularity and exponential growth of the Hasidic community” as the “most sig-
122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 6, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
nificant problem facing the County today.” According to Diedrich, a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, broadening education in yeshivos will discourage the practice of having entire segments of the community voting for a particular candidate. He went on to say that denying children an education in those subjects is abusive and a criminal offense that he would prosecute if elected district attorney in November. Diedrich attempted to soften his
words by saying that he believes that there is much good in the chassidic community, but that children who do not receive a broad secular education are irreparably injured, which by extension “threatens our democracy.” Responding to Diedrich’s twopage diatribe against the chassidic community, Yossi Gestetner of the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council stated, “DAs prosecute crime; not communities.” Gestetner also noted that the plan outlined by Diedrich was illegal and could result in his losing his license to practice law in New York State.

When it comes to those special teachers and babysitters, who give so much love and devotion to our children, I like to send something heartwarming. Don’t forget a heartfelt note!

INGREDIENTS 4 sticks margarine 6 eggs 9 cups flour 1 T. vanilla extract 4 cups confectioners’ sugar 3 flat tsp. baking powder
DIRECTIONS 1. Place all ingredients into a mixer bowl. Use a cookie hook to knead it into a soft dough. 2. For easier handling, divide dough in four parts and chill for at least one hour. 3. Preheat oven to 350°. Remove one piece at a time and roll out between two parchment papers. 4. Cut out desired shapes using any large cookie cutter and remove excess dough to maintain cookies shape. 5. Bake for approximately 10 minutes. Tops should remain light and bottoms should begin to brown.
NOTES A large variety of cookie cutters are available today. Find any large shape and adapt these ideas for decorating.
container with boiling water and the shorter one with baking chocolate.
I find that the simplest way to melt baking chocolate is to put a shorter container (16 oz.) into a taller container (32 oz.), and create a double boiler by filling the taller
For easiest removal, I allow decorated cookies to dry on silver foil.

Leaf Cookies
Teardrop Cookies
To decorate, hold the entire cookie top-side down between your thumb and index finger. Dip top of cookie in melted chocolate. Scatter cashew halves, caramel chips and large coconut chips over chocolate while chocolate is wet.
To decorate, hold cookie at a slant and dip halfway into container of melted chocolate. Sprinkle with sliced toasted almonds.
Flower Cookie
Pecan Cookies
For this cookie I used a Wilton fondant cutter, because I liked the shape.
Use any large flower cookie cutter.
I was surprised to find that no teardrop cookie cutter was available. I bent a round scalloped aluminum cookie cutter into a teardrop shape for this cookie.
To decorate, drop some melted white chocolate in the center of flower. Sprinkle with pumpkin seeds and craisins.
Any oblong shape cutter will work for this. To decorate, dip bottoms of three pecan halves in chocolate. Stick onto cookie. Drizzle with white and dark chocolate.
Heart Cookie
To decorate, melt good-quality white chocolate in a container. Melt small pieces of pink chocolate in a Ziploc bag. Dip half of cookie into the container and lay flat on silver foil. Snip off a tiny piece at the corner of the Ziploc bag, and draw three to four stripes across the wet chocolate. Use a toothpick to draw lines from top to bottom to blend the chocolates.

ost of us have, at one time or another, fantasized about winning a trip to Millionaire’s Street on roads paved in green. Even knowing full well when buying a lottery ticket that the odds of winning are not in our favor, that still doesn’t mean we can’t dream! In honor of Purim, the day of lots, we explore the ins and outs of how the modern-day system works. Forget about a cash prize; let us celebrate the lots Haman drew, confident that he was the winner, until his luck turned... On the Ball In both Mega Millions and Powerball, players pay $2 for a ticket with six numbers that they either choose on their own or have a machine generate randomly. Once they select their numbers and pay for their tickets, they tuck it into their pocket and stay tuned with interest… After all, their chances of matching all six numbers are roughly 1 in 300 million! (1 in 302,575,350 for Mega Millions and 1

in 292,201,338 for Powerball, to be exact.) In Powerball there are five white balls and 1 red ball — the Powerball; in Mega Millions, five white balls and one yellow ball — the Mega Ball — to which people will be comparing their tickets once they are drawn twice a week.

has the lucky numbers on it? While it would seem natural for them to shout the fantastic news from the rooftops, financial advisors caution winners to stay calm and keep their lips sealed. Since there is a time frame for claiming the prize, wise winners first set themselves up, making copies of their ticket and securing it; seeking out a lawyer, an accountant and a financial advisor, and planning things out with this team before turning in the ticket; changing their phone number, setting up a new post office box — or even deciding to forgo the publicity and setting up a blind trust through an attorney so they can enjoy their anonymity.
Annuity or Lump Sum? will start at a minimum of $40 million, and each time the jackpot is not won, the numbers get raised by at least another $10 million. This is how the jackpots become so high. (The past few years’ higher jackpots were attributed to recent deliberate changes by the lottery companies to decrease the chances of hitting the jackpot, thereby building more interest as the jackpot climbs up.) A prime example is the recent Mega Millions jackpot that reached over $1.6 billion this past October. It inflated to this historic amount since no one had won the 19 drawings beforehand, catapulting the prize higher and higher.
Secondary Prizes One doesn’t have to be the jackpot winner to win some extra cash. In fact there are many lower-tier prizes awarded, the highest of them a $1 million prize for having all five numbers match, except for the Ball. (Two people claimed this prize in the famous October Mega Millions draw in this manner.) There are a lot of combinations that have different prize values. (From getting just the Ball, which is a win of $4, to getting 4 numbers plus the Powerball, which comes with a $50,000 prize.)

The lottery prize can get paid out all at once in cash or annually over a period of time. Which option optimizes the earnings? It all depends on the specific circumstances. Not too long ago, the cash sum was higher with annual payments, since the lottery companies would buy bonds with the prize money, and that would earn the winner between 3 and 5 percent interest for the sum they hadn’t claimed yet. Today, with
Here are a few things a person is more likely to experience than winning the lottery. • Being killed by a vending machine (1 in 112,000,000) • Being elected president (1 in 100,000,000 in a lifetime) • Having an IQ of 190 or greater (1 in 107,000,000) • Being killed by a falling coconut (1 in 50,700,000) • Being attacked by a shark (1 in 11,500,000) • Becoming a billionaire (1 in 2,200,000) • Giving birth to quadruplets (1 in 729,000)

interest rates dropping ever lower, the cash difference is not that great. (However, annuity will still give you more cash dollar for dollar, since taxes are lower when the sums being received are lower.) Most financial advisors recommend going for the lump sum, since it can be invested to grow exponentially. In fact, 80 percent of winners choose to take the lump sum upon winning. However, with it comes the risk of quickly spending the winnings, leaving the winner destitute before long, or mismanaging the money. So someone with a tendency to mismanage money may opt for the security of annuity payments.

FYI: Lotteries are illegal in eight of U.S. states: Alabama, Hawaii, Arkansas, Alaska, Nevada, Utah, Mississippi and Wyoming.
Exceeding Expectations
Here Comes the Taxman! Probably the biggest catch in the enticing numbers of the jackpot is the fact that the prize money is taxable income — and such amounts obviously fall into the highest tax bracket. This means that 39.6 percent of the prize goes to tax, leaving the winner with roughly 60 percent of the jackpot, 25 percent of which gets withheld immediately (the winner will never see that money) and the rest of which gets paid at tax time.

On top of that, local taxes come to claim their piece of the pie. New Jersey’s rate is the lowest, at 3 percent, while New York’s is (of course!) the highest, at 8.82 percent. Some cities, like NYC, still slice off a municipality tax to boot. So someone who wins the lottery in New York will walk away with roughly 50 percent of the prize.
Where Do Lottery Profits Go? Lottery revenues go to state governments. Generally, they are earmarked for programs, very often those dedicated to education or environmental protection.
For the Look you Want, Look No Further
FYI: The highest jackpot in the history of lotteries was the Powerball jackpot of January 2016, where three people claimed the $1,586,500,000 prize (this was after secondary prizes were deducted). Each winner ended up with $327,800,000 after taxes were deducted. The largest single-win jackpot ever was the historic Mega Millions win this past October, when the jackpot prize was $1,537,000,000 (after secondary prizes were deducted). The South Carolinian winner walked away with $877,800,000.

There’s nothing like the fresh faces of darling children. Though when they’re ringing your doorbell for the umpteenth time in an hour — at bath time, of course — those adorably dimpled little ones might not appear so cherubic to your frazzled self. You may also wonder why they’re walking the streets alone, endowed with the childish hope that they’ll find yet another dollar-doler-outer to purchase their raffle. And come Purim? With the collection community of pint-size pushkamen working in high gear, what can we expect of our kids in terms of safety and etiquette? Let’s properly prepare our children for if and when they take to the streets in the hope of supporting their mosdos or organizations of choice.
SAFETY FIRST “Mommy, can I go collecting with Chavy?” “Our school wants us to sell ten noi Sukkah, and then we’ll win a prize!” “I’m supposed to fill up my pushka for cheder!” The requests to “go collecting” come fast and furious, and we might be tempted to give a feeble “yes” and watch our progeny bound carelessly out the door. But cliched as it may be, safety really does come first. Consider your beloved child as a doorto-door salesman. It’s a difficult vocation that involves taking into account the weather, the people one will meet and the location. Take a few minutes before your child steps out the door and invest a little effort into preparing him or her on how to avoid potential dangers that may crop up. And of course, follow up those preparations with a prayer for success and safety.
PHYSICAL PREPARATIONS: Ideally, an adult should be with their child during any collection rounds, but in case that’s not possible: • Snap a picture of your children before they head out. This will come in handy if a child is lost, chas v’shalom. Searchers will be able to easily identify your child if the need arises. • Arrange groups of two or three children to walk together. A child alone is a potentially greater target for unwanted attention. • Give your child a cell phone to use in case of emergency, loss of direction, fear or whatnot. Make sure they know how to use the phone and how to dial 911! Put a sticker on the back of the phone with Hatzoloh’s number, as well. • Ensure that your child knows their address and phone number by heart. • Though dark is not an ideal time for children to go collecting, if they’ll be heading out, make sure they wear reflectors. It’s almost impossible to see a person walking in the dark. • Where will your child be putting the cash they collect? Far too many times we see children walking around with extra-large Ziploc bags with tens and twenties clearly visible. Easy target + visible cash = a bad combination. Give your child an opaque shopping bag or other non-obvious object to carry change. • Just as children should be trained in crossing the street safely (at corners, after looking both ways, etc.), even very young children should be trained to recognize when a car is backing out. Train your children to look for rear lights turning on and to retreat if they do, giving the car wide berth to back out. Never rely on the driver of the car; there are blind spots in which a child becomes invisible to the driver.
March 6, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 161 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
MENTAL PREPARATIONS: Let’s face it: The world is not a safe place. There are far too many painful stories spurred by hatred, sadism, mental illness and crooked belief systems. When our children walk out our doors, we pray that “harchikeinu m’adam ra,” that Hashem keep us and our loved ones far from evil people. But hishtadlus has its place as well. It’s our duty to teach our children to have a healthy (not disabling!) fear of strangers, and to trust their gut. If something feels wrong, it probably is. Even if everything seems safe, the brain is not always to be trusted. In a widely publicized 1993 experiment performed on children playing in a park, chilling facts emerged: Even the children who had learned about “stranger danger” and in whom parents had complete confidence regarding safety skills were lured out of the park by a friendly stranger within 35 seconds. Every. Single. Child. In 35 seconds. The brain is a complex thing. It feeds us with a steady stream of information, and if that information contradicts presupposed information, it’s easy to find ourselves making decisions that are shockingly unwise. That goes for everyone; all the more so for kids. To kids, the term “dangerous strangers” is synonymous with “scary.” But that’s not always true! In fact, some of the evilest people in the world have been extremely charismatic and charming. Here’s what to teach your children to prepare them for the world outside:
BRAIN SAYS: Dangerous people look scary. WISDOM SAYS: Dangerous people aren’t always scary-looking, and they don’t always make you feel scared. They might even make you feel very good, telling you that they need you to help them find a lost object, hand them an object they dropped from their car or give them directions. A dangerous person can even be a heimishe Yid. THE RULE: If an adult you don’t know approaches you to ask for your help or calls you over to them, do not trust them! Stay together with your group and never get into or go near a stranger’s car, or go to a quiet or empty place with them. If, chas v’shalom, a stranger ever grabs you, kick, scream and yell, “This is not my parent!”

BRAIN SAYS: Someone I know is offering me a ride. It must be safe, and it’ll be a lot easier to collect that way. WISDOM SAYS: The only people I’m allowed to go for a ride with are the people who Mommy and Tatty have told me I can get into a car with. Anybody else must know our family’s code word, otherwise, I can’t go with them, no matter what they tell me. Even if they say Mommy or Tatty has been hurt or something else that makes me feel scared, I won’t trust them. THE RULE: Choose a code word together as a family. The code word will be the green light for “go.” For example, “violin music.” If someone comes to pick you up and they know your family’s secret code, then you can go with them. Make sure the code is not a very common word. Example: “Hi, Yanky. Your mother told me you love ‘violin music.’ Let me take you to a few more doors and then drive you home.”
BRAIN SAYS: If I take the shortcut through those trees, I can do a whole ‘nother street before I have to be home! WISDOM SAYS: Shortcuts can have wild animals or strangers. I better stay in a very public place. THE RULE: Shortcuts are never, ever, ever for kids to use alone!
Some other important pointers to keep in mind when your kid goes collecting: • Children should only knock on doors of people they know. • Homes should only be approached if the porch lights are on (if at night) and the children can be clearly seen from the street. • No matter what the weather is, a child should never enter a home — unless they often spend time in that house with their parents’ full permission. This even applies for neighbors. The fact is that 90 percent of abuse happens not at the hands of strangers… but at the hands of someone a child knows. Perhaps, most importantly, is that children should be trained to focus on and be aware of their surroundings. That means no headphones or talking on the phone while walking. Train them to keep their heads up, eyes open and to be tuned in to the sounds around them. Teach your children to live in the moment. In fact, that’s a lesson all of us ought to learn!
164 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 6, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
BRAIN SAYS: I’m lost. Let me find a police officer. WISDOM SAYS: I’m lost. Let me find a mother with children to help me. THE RULE: It’s hard to tell the difference between a security guard and a policeman, and many security guards are people who aren’t trustworthy. A mother with children is the safest option in case you get lost.
EVEN IN OUR TOWN “Mommy!” my daughter came running in the door. “A red car pulled up next to Shaindy*, and the driver asked her if she wanted to come for a ride!” Thankfully, 11-year-old Shaindy had been in front of her own home and had turned tail and run inside. Her mother immediately called the police and discovered that a known predator was on the loose. Footage culled from my personal surveillance system showed the car circling our block four times in a four-minute time span. Only when he realized that he was being tailed by Chaverim did the driver leave. This happened right here, in our own Monsey.
GRUMBLEWORTHY OR GREAT? Mothers share their thoughts on kids collecting: I think it’s better not to object or put a stop to too many collectors. The Chofetz Chaim in Sefer Ahavas Chesed shares the importance of keeping our doors open to collectors even if they’re repetitious or annoying. These minor disturbances can take the place of other difficulties in our lives. -N.W. This problematic system should not be changed, but abolished! -M.C.L The question begs to be asked: Why in the world do parents, willingly or not, expose children to such risks and danger in the times we live in today? -K.O. I have a nephew who is a master fundraiser and he is only in fourth grade. Every year he raises hundreds of dollars for his school. How does he do it? Not by knocking on people’s doors; he makes personal phone calls. -D.L. Safety issues aside, there is a concept — and a halacha, I believe — that says two people must go together to collect for another party, to be a shomer for each other from the temptation of taking the money for personal use. Schools should teach this concept to their students before sending them out. I.D.
ETIQUETTE OF THE KNOCK “Ma! I gotta go collecting. Everyone’s going. Can I please, please, please go?!” I heard the plea once, twice, ten times and my resolve began to weaken. Personally, I’m not a fan of sending little girls (or little boys) to knock on doors for tzedakah, but when it’s such an ingrained part of our society, I worry about being the only ogre of a parent saying “no.” “Take two friends with you. Only knock on the doors of neighbors whom we know. And don’t go inside any houses.” When finally she bounded out the door, a sense of relief washed over me. The kvetching had stopped. And then the knocks began and my frustration mounted. One child for a cheder. Another child for the same cheder. A third for a different cheder. It became very difficult to prepare for Shabbos. And then it hit me: I’d just done exactly the same thing to other parents. The one time I let my daughter “go collecting” was on a Friday afternoon. Oops. Talk about about a faux pas. A poll of mothers resulted in the following ideas of how to not annoy the neighbors when kids are collecting: • Do not allow your child to collect after 6 p.m. as many families are beginning their nightly routine at that time. • Ring the doorbell or knock only once! Children should know that even if the dwellers within are home but do not come to the door, it’s because they have a reason. • No peeking in windows! It’s impolite and inappropriate. • Please don’t allow your child to collect Friday after chatzos! Same goes for erev anything. • Fast days should be considered off limits. People may be sleeping or not feeling well. Please don’t allow your children to disturb them! • Children should not knock on doors bearing two raffle books and a pushka; have them choose just one worthy cause to collect for. • Perhaps the mosdos can choose only one “ambassador” per block? Getting twenty knocks on the door for one institution is very time-consuming, at best… • Teach your children to not approach people on the street to collect. If someone is running to catch a car service, for instance, it can hold them up. • Teach your children to thank the donor. Every time. No matter how small the donation. *Name has been changed for privacy

Submitting an application to a prospective yeshiva, school or camp, is like buying a lottery ticket on a larger scale, yet with a bigger chance of winning. As we carefully select the numbers, we daven to Hashem that ours should be a winning ticket. Following is an interview with a very lucky mother, Malkie R., who בס"דwon the lottery last summer at Camp Galei. How did you find out about Camp Galei? We had paid up in full at her school’s daycamp, when my daughter spotted the ad in The Monsey View. She clipped it, and couldn’t get her eyes off it. Were you on board right away? I wasn’t sure. Which clientele are they attracting? Are they serious about what they are offering? Will they be able to pull it off? At what point were you comfortable with your decision? As soon as we got in! When it took a while for my daughter to be accepted, I realized that they must be seriously inquiring about their applicants, and that they probably have a certain criteria for their campers. My daughter’s acceptance was my reassurance that they are looking for people like us. How would you describe the overall experience at Camp Galei? My daughter blossomed and gained a tremendous amount of confidence! She loved every minute – the fun activities and the more relaxed activities. It was an incredible combination of a happy, calm environment, but always something going on. Did she go with friends? No. she didn’t know anyone there. The first day at lunch she thought she’ll never make friends. An hour later she was fine. How long did the thrill of Camp Galei last? All winter! My daughter picked up so many skills and she was able to further build on them. Hairstyling, clay sculpting, and cookie decorating are still going strong, and she’s doing it all with such healthy confidence! She made clay miniatures for the Sukkah, cookies for yom tov, and she’s styling her own hair all the time. And of course, drama was her favorite – she’s performing her plays all day. Would you consider sending her again? Of course! We were probably the first ones to request an application for the coming summer. Are you serious? Why would you apply so early? I know that they have limited slots per age group, and I’m not taking any chances. I do hope that they will give preference to returning campers! Camp Galei registration opened Rosh Chodesh, and the acceptance process takes approximately two weeks. There’s a big chance that the winning lottery ticket – her acceptance letter will arrive just in time to bring a real Simchas Purim!

They say that life can change in the blink of an eye. They say that when you hit rock bottom, the only way is up. And what do I say? They’re right on both accounts.
“Take it and get out of here!” the gas station attendant hissed at me. Not quite sure what I’d done to merit his reaction, I wasn't about to hang around to find out. I grabbed the slip of paper he’d shoved back at me and high-tailed it to my car. Only then did I look down.

Life wasn’t easy for my young family, because despite best effort, we’d fallen on hard times. Tuition and grocery bills loomed large before us, insurmountable mountains at the head of every month. Utilities and rent and yom tov and.... The list of “ands” seemed endless at the time. Month by month the expenses mounted until the frigid winter became a perfect complement to the bleakness I felt as my bank account dwindled. I was down to my last twenty. Shivering against the cold, I ducked into the gas station to pay my bill, but when I handed over my debit card, it came back “declined.” A quick call to my wife affirmed that the bank account was empty; she’d swiped her card earlier that day. “Can I come back tomorrow and pay my bill?” I tried, hoping the attendant would have pity on me. But rules are rules, and the answer was no.

Sighing, I crawled back into my car and began a tedious search through all the nooks and crannies. Nothing doing. A half hour passed and I was still there, broke, stuck and cold. As a last resort, I emptied all of my pockets and finally found a rolled up ball of cash.
But having reached absolutely, positively broke, I realized that nothing short of a miracle could breathe new life into my bank account.

Twenty-two dollars. Dashing back inside I unfurled the twenty-dollar bill and gave it to the attendant. “I found money!” I said, thrilled that I could finally head home. Pointing at the remaining two dollars, the attendant suggested I buy a lottery ticket. I just shook my head, no. “Don’t be crazy,” he said. “The drawing is in five minutes. You might win.” Lotteries aren’t my style, especially when low on cash. But having reached absolutely, positively broke, I realized that nothing short of a miracle could breathe new life into my bank account. Why not? I thought, and then whispered a prayer that Hashem bless us with parnassah — either through this lottery ticket or through other means. I paid for my ticket and then drove home on my last tank of gas. A FEW WEEKS PASSED, and we managed to make it by pulling our belts a bit tighter and scrimping even more than usual until a paycheck finally arrived. The next time my gas tank ran dry (as gas tanks are wont to do), I gathered some odd change and headed

out to fill up. Standing in line to pay, I noticed a few people scratching lottery tickets, hoping to win big. It reminded me of my purchase a weeks prior, and feeling around in my pocket, I searched for the lottery ticket, doubting that I’d won. As I handed the ticket to the attendant to be scanned, I felt that peculiar flutter I’m sure most lotto participants feel during the moment of unsurety in which dreams are not yet dashed. The hiss of, “Take it and get out of here!â€? brought me back to earth. I grabbed my ticket and ran. Safe in my car, I peeked. “Fifteen thousand dollars!â€? I crowed into the cell phone. “We’ve won fifteen thousand dollars!â€? My wife could scarcely believe it, and as soon as I arrived home, she grabbed the ticket. “But, Levi,â€? she said, “it’s not fifteen thousand dollars‌ It’s one hundred and fifty thousand dollars!â€? In my excitement, I hadn’t noticed the extra zero.
I felt that peculiar flutter I’m sure most lotto participants feel during the moment of unsurety in which dreams are not yet dashed. NO, I DIDN’T WIN THE MEGA MILLIONS, but it was more than enough to set me back on my feet and even enabled us to put a down payment on a house. More importantly, though, our winning the lottery was a potent reminder that Someone’s always looking down on us and our every dollar — however few they may be. And even when it seems the money well has dried up, our Tatty stands ready to shower us with brachos. Because at the end of the day, we’re all the Billionaire’s kid.

There may not have been a polar vortex last February, but I was fortunately surrounded by a whirlwind of my own — I had just given birth to my fourth daughter in a row. The joy was indescribable as our youngest was over three years old, and my three daughters and our only son were giddy with excitement. Additionally, she was born 11 days to Purim, when the entire world was in merriment mode. Even once Purim passed, the snow seemed to be on a merrymaking mission all its own when it pelted Monsey all through Shushan Purim. The next morning, as I pulled up my hood in an attempt to stay warm while waiting for my preschooler’s bus, I noted that the streets were barely plowed. My daughter, seemingly oblivious to the cold, danced around me in the snow, enjoying the wait. I was glad hers was the only bus I had to catch — three of my children had gone to the dentist with my husband that morning, so that meant two less buses. It didn’t take long for my phone to ring. About three minutes into his trip to the dentist, my husband had noticed the roads were impossible to drive through and deduced that no school bus would come anywhere close to my house. He also knew I was in no position to head down to a main road to catch the bus there. I could barely walk straight, so drunk was I with fatigue. There was also no way I could push a stroller all the way down to the main road, and I wasn’t going to hold a newborn in my arms in this weather! So he called and asked me to cross the street and bring my daughter through the shortcut to the next street, where he would be waiting. I checked my newborn in the carriage, locked the door behind me, and crossed the street. Thankfully, I got to the shortcut relatively un-

scathed, placed my daughter in the warm Honda Odyssey, and began the trek back to my house, all the while thinking of my warm bed and how I would spend as long as possible — that is, until the buses brought my kids home — in it. Feeling wobbly, I focused on placing one foot in front of the other. I must have been a sight because one of my darling neighbors called out to me, “Mazel tov! You look like you could use lunch! I’ll order lunch for you one day next week, okay?” I thanked her and told her that she could order the Brooklyn Bridge. All I needed was a bed and I was headed there. Just a few hours later, the bell rang. I had slept enough to feel somewhat human as I got downstairs and graciously accepted the Hava Java bag full of warm fare from the delivery guy at my door. Before I sat down to eat, I dialed my neighbor’s number to thank her. After the initial niceties, she told me that she really was planning to order the lunch next week, but seeing how haggard I looked, she’d figured a good meal would give me strength. Then she continued, “You don’t know the rest of the story! I got a call a bit earlier that your lunch had arrived to someone with a similar address to yours. “The woman knew who I was and she called me. Here’s what she told me: ‘I was in middle of davening when a young man with a Hava Java bag showed up at my door. My baby had just undergone very complicated surgery, and I had spent the entire week going to and from the hospital. Somehow, seeing that bag, I figured my brothers were thinking about me and wanted to cheer me up. I motioned to the young man to leave it at the door and finished davening. Afterward, when I set the bag on the table and read the card, I felt awful.
This meal had totally not been intended for me.’ “Then,” my neighbor continued, “the woman told me that given her state of exhaustion and the weather conditions, she regretted that there was no way she could get this bag to the intended recipient.” My neighbor had then called Hava Java and told the customer service respresentative that the bag had mistakenly been delivered to the wrong address. After looking into the matter, he called my neighbor right back and told her to tell the woman who received the lunch to enjoy it. “We’ll prepare a new package, because we want the intended recipient to enjoy a fresh, piping hot meal,” he said. “Sure enough,” my neighbor continued, “I called the woman back, told her to enjoy every bite, and now you have your lunch as well!” Never mind the five-star service Hava Java provides (and I’m not getting commission, I promise!), but even though this woman’s address is similar to ours, this family had never before, or after, this cold, wintry day received any mail, deliveries or packages intended for our family. In complete awe of the chain of events, I called the woman and told her that I had heard about the lunch saga and about the difficulty they were experiencing with their child. “Hashem sent you lunch today,” I told her. “My neighbor had not been planning to send me lunch until next week, but He Who rules all of our plans made her order it today, when He knew you needed a free lunch most.” Naturally, I think a lot about that day in February, and I doubt that any polar vortex can diminish the warmth and love I felt from On High after this experience. And to all the cynics out there, I now know there is such a thing as a free lunch — at least sometimes.

should not cry out, and the refuah is coming soon.”17 Meaning even though we are not allowed to daven for refuah on Shabbos, it does not delay the refuah in any way, and it will come soon.18 It is important to point out that it is mutar to daven even on Shabbos for someone who is in such critical condition that he may be niftar on Shabbos.19 Even in a case of someone who is not in a situation where he may be niftar on Shabbos, but asked the people to pray for him on Shabbos, it is mutar to daven for him, because it may worsen his condition knowing that they didn’t daven.20 When visiting aveilim on Shabbos, some poskim say that one may recite the regular “hamakom yenachem.” These poskim explain that this is not similar to visiting an ill person because while one who sees an ill person might cry out to Hashem to heal him, and therefore would require a change from the lashon generally used, one who is visiting an avel would not come to cry out because there is no way to bring the deceased back.21 However, others hold that similar to when visiting a sick person, here, too, one must say, “Shabbos hi milenachem v’nechamah krovah lavo — On Shabbos one should not comfort, and the comfort is coming soon.”22 When visiting aveilim some have a minhag not to say any of the things mentioned. Rather they just visit, say gut Shabbos and leave.23 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacharelated questions, consult your rav for a psak.

The Very First Gas Stations
The Pennies and the Profits
Nowadays, a needle hovering near the E on the gas gauge means the car will soon be on its way to a gas station. But drivers of the very first motorcars did differently when in need of fuel — they went to the drugstore! The reason behind this choice of shop was the location of the very first filling station, which serviced the driver of the very first road trip.
The world has changed a lot since the first drive-in filling station, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, opened to the public at the end of 1913. While gas sold on opening day only put drivers back 27 cents per gallon, today’s gas stations claim that the profits they earn from gas amounts to pennies as well, after taxes and operating costs. So where do their earnings come from? According to the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), about 60 percent of a gas station’s profits comes from the sale of snacks, sunglasses, medicine — and lottery tickets! — found in convenience stores worldwide.
German Karl Benz, who built the first motor wagon in 1885 and is credited as the inventor of the modern car, had a very devoted wife. Keen to promote use of her husband’s invention, Mrs. Benz undertook a 121-mile trip in the company of her two teenage sons. As the tale goes, she did this without her husband’s knowledge and managed to drive the car — as well as serve as its mechanic — all the way to her destination. And when a refuel was in order? She made a stop at the city pharmacy in Wiesloch, Germany, to refill the tank. As the popularity of the Benz motor wagon grew, more and more pharmacies began to service their engines as a side business. Over the next few years, drivers also bought fuel at general stores, hardware stores, and even at blacksmith shops. Eventually, as automobiles became more and more popular, the demand for fuel grew, and in 1905, the first gas station was built in St. Louis, Missouri.

A Gallon… or Not? Who says the 10 gallons showing up on the gas pump screen actually measure 10 gallons? Maybe the gas station has its pumps wired to show full gallons when in fact only two-thirds of that amount is streaming into your car’s tank? That’s where the Bureau of Weights and Measures comes in. The Weights and Measures officials make their rounds, inspecting the gas pumps under their jurisdiction to ensure accuracy.
Dirty With Distinction In 2011, Kimberly-Clark performed a study where they tested hundreds of surfaces, from ATM keys to elevator buttons, to determine which surface is dirtiest of all. The surface with the dubious distinction of scoring highest on the list? Gas pump buttons. Next time you refuel, wash up!
The Biggest and the Best Buc-ee’s, a gas station and convenience chain popular in several southern states, is known for doing everything on a grand scale. Their convenience stores are usually as large as supermarkets or discount department stores, and the sheer amount of products they stock is as unlimited as the space they’re in. The convenience store at their location in New Braunfels, Texas, for instance, covers 67,000 square feet and boasts 31 cash registers, 250 employees… and 60 gas pumps! Incidentally, this location is famous for another reason — it was once voted the cleanest gas station in America, which is always a good thing...
More Gas Stations of Note Besides for being extraordinarily... yellow, this gas station’s convenience store is actually in the shape of a shell! Located in Winston-Salem, NC, this is — pretty obviously — a Shell gas station, and the last of the eight original gas stations by this brand.
This gas station, located in Spain, is said to look like birds taking flight, though its architects say it reflects the shape of the rolling hills visible alongside the major highway nearby.
The architects who designed this gas station were attempting to create a roadside attraction at the same time — and they seemed to have succeeded! This cheerful gas station in Oklahoma is a popular destination among tired travelers who are looking for break from the road.
This famous U.S. gas station, located in Los Angeles, is know for its “green” certification. The building was constructed from recycled stainless steel, has recycling facilities onsite, and boasts 90 solar panels.

CHAI LIFELINE ENLISTS ARMY OF SUPPORTERS TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD ILLNESS MARCH 12-14 Crowdfunding Campaign Will Provide Critical Services to More Families Than Ever Before New York, NY, March 8, 2019—Chai Lifeline, the international children’s health support network, will launch a 48hour “Join the Fight” campaign March 12 at noon EST. In the last year, Chai Lifeline provided critical support to more children with life-threatening and lifelong illnesses than ever before—a 15% year-over-year increase. This campaign will help Chai Lifeline meet the rapidly-growing need for its essential services in the community. “Our goal is to raise at least $2 million, but more importantly, we want to enlist an ‘army of 18,000 supporters’ from across the globe to help in this effort,” said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, CEO of Chai Lifeline. “For more than 30 years, Chai Lifeline has always been there for the most vulnerable children and families in our community. Now, we’re asking the community to join us in the fight against childhood illness and help ensure that we can continue providing the
programs and services our families rely on.” Those Chai Lifeline programs and services include one-on-one family counseling; nourishing meals delivered to hospitals and homes; transportation to medical appointments; the summer experience of a lifetime for children with cancer and chronic illnesses at Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha Special medically-supervised overnight camps; Project Chai crisis intervention, trauma and bereavement workshops for families, schools and communities; insurance advocacy; family retreats and respite; sibling mentoring and tutoring through i-Shine afterschool national programs, and so much more. Contributions to the campaign are all tax-deductible and will have an even greater impact as all donations will be matched. To donate to the campaign, please visit www.enlistforchai. org or call 732-943-1900. March 6, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 233 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

With each passing day, we become another day older. And while we may not notice small changes, suddenly, we realize that our health and chronological age have caught up with each other. One of the most common conditions associated with aging, although not necessarily with ‘old’ age, is osteoarthritis, a condition in which joints break down from wear and tear. Do we have to accept that as inevitable? Absolutely not! Understanding how our joints work, and how exercise and nutrition affect their overall health, can go a long way in preserving mobility and movement well into the golden years. Bones and Joints Bones serve many purposes in the body. Besides for holding up the human shape, bones protect internal organs and allow for movement and activity. Without the skeleton, a person would exist as a shapeless mass of blood vessels, muscles and sinews. Thankfully, though, the skeletal system consists of many bones which create the human form we are familiar with. Moreover, each bone, while interconnected at joint junctions, is its own unit with its unique purpose. It’s the joints, the meeting place between bones, that allow a person to move about. There are several types of joints in the body. Immovable joints, such as are found in the skull, are connected with fibrous tissue. Cartilaginous joints move just a bit. They are linked by cartilage, made of collagen and elastin fibers, which allow for flexibility. The spinal vertebrae are examples of cartilaginous joints. Synovial joints, the third type, move in many directions. These joints are filled with synovial fluid. The joints we are most familiar with, such as the elbows, knees, wrists, and ankles, are synovial joints. An Aging System Like any machine with moving parts, the joints need to be kept well-lubricated to continue to function well. During the childhood and teenage years, the body does not undergo as much stress and the bodily repair system is adequate. As a person ages and the joints sustain more weight and use, it becomes ever more important to exercise each part of the body. Furthermore, nutrition, or lack thereof, becomes ever more impactful. Excessive wear and damage to joints often results in osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is commonly referred to simply as ‘arthritis’. The knees are most often the joints affected by osteoarthritis. This is understandable since the knees absorb most of the impact and force from the body’s movements. As such, it is the first to wear out. Next most-affected are the hips,

followed by other joints in the body. When cartilage and synovial fluids break down, the joint’s movements become less agile and more painful. Osteoarthritis also comes along with swelling and inflammation of the joints, which further exacerbate the pain. Success of SynerG SynerG is a simple and powerful formula made from vegansourced Glucosamine Sulfate and other ingredients which are clinically proven to be effective for joint wellness, have antiinflammatory properties, and provide relief of pain associated with osteoarthritis. SynerG addresses the nutritional aspect of joint maintenance. Glucosamine is naturally occurring chemical in the fluids surrounding joints and is also used to produce other chemicals to build tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Most glucosamine supplements are derived from animals. The Greengrown® Glucosamine Sulfate Potassium Salt in SynerG is derived from nonGMO corn. Taking glucosamine long term can help with pain management as well as slow the progression of arthritis. OptiMSM®, the purest form of MSM, is a source of biologic sulfur important for the health of joints and cartilage. It is an important ingredient in maintaining and improving joint function and mobility. MSM is also an anti-inflammatory and can reduce pain and swelling. Calcium, the mainstay of bone and joint health, is an important ingredient in SynerG. FruiteX-BTM is identical to the calcium found in natural sources like legumes and certain fruits and vegetables. In clinical studies, FruiteX-BTM has shown to rapidly reduce pain and support bone and joint health over time. ParActin® is a plant extract which supports a healthier response to tissue damage and helps the natural repair systems in the body. ParActin also lessens inter-cellular signals of pain and breakdown. It is the unique formulation and combinations, targeting the root causes and painful outcomes of osteoarthritis, that make SynerG successful among sufferers. SynerG is optimized to deliver the most well-substantiated active compounds for quick and lasting results. Optimal joint health is critical to maintaining an active life; being active has a positive impact on almost every aspect of mental and physical health. Taking SynerG regularly can reduce painful discomfort while increasing motion and mobility, thereby allowing for vitality, zest and energy. SynerG can activate the ‘young’ in those who are truly ‘young at heart’.
