A HEARTWARMING THANK YOU I was recently stuck in traffic at corner Route 306 and Calvert Drive. Since things weren’t moving where I was headed, I yielded to many cars that wanted to make a left turn. When there was finally enough room for me to go, I saw a school bus coming down Calvert, signaling that he would turn left. I let him go before me. As the bus passed, the boys from UTA shouted out the window to me, thanking me. Mi K’amcha Yisroel. A Bus Driver

how many times I’ve been nichshal, thinking that I’ll manage not to touch any letterings… I would like to share a tip my mother came up with. When opening a bag of lettuce, she makes a slit at the side of the bag, and then continues to cut along the side. There are no printed words in that area, and it’s easy to make a smooth cut there. I am also hoping for change in the packaging, but until that change occurs, there are some creative ways to prevent tearing the letterings. K.D.

WHAT’S IN THE BREAD?

We’re not your mother

But your white shirt should be white.

(Re: The Thing Better Than Sliced Bread, Issue 196) Thank you for a wonderful magazine every week. The article on homemade bread made with the bread maker was amazing! I went ahead and ordered one and can’t wait to use it! However, I would love to get the recipe that the writer uses with spelt flour. Is it possible to provide it? I also wanted to add that the article on bentching made me resolve to wash for breakfast rather than using mezonos. Thanks again! B.H. SHEVY HOLLANDER RESPONDS: This is the recipe I use for the Hamilton Beach bread maker (on cycle 1). Each bread maker may need different directions. Place the ingredients into the pan in the order listed: almost a cup of water; 1 T. organic sugar; 3 T. oil; 1½ tsp. dry yeast; 3¼ cups flour; 1½ tsp. sea salt. This recipe is for a 1.5-pound loaf.

BEWARE OF DOGS (Re: Ramapo Valley Reservations, Excursions, Issue 195) Thank you for the beautiful Excursions booklet. I just wanted to mention that we went to Ramapo Valley Reservation on Chol Hamoed, and although it is very scenic, there were a lot of dogs there, many of them unleashed. I am sure that there are people who would not appreciate that, and I am therefore sharing this information. R.C.

family. In their quiet way, this organization is now providing Shabbos food — ready-cooked heimishe meals — every Erev Shabbos to this family. The food is packed with such abundance that there’s enough to tide them over for a good part of the week. I know that this organization also provides food for Yidden in prison, but it’s more than food. It’s knowing that someone out there cares. There’s hope; a reason to go on! I’m wishing them to be able to continue their vital work for many more years with hatzlacha and siyata d’Shmaya. And may Klal Yisroel no longer need such services. Family Schwartz, Monsey

(Inbox, Issue 196–197) Thank you to the letter writer for raising the important issue of ahavas Yisroel. I feel privileged to live in a community where other members take the time to express their pain when another Yid was hurt and take action to prevent their children from doing the same. The three ideas B.F. mentioned are the most basic, important steps. After taking these actions, you can incorporate some more of these ideas I’ve learned from my wonderful neighbors, to promote shalom and achdus among our children. • Discuss with your children specific behaviors that can be hurtful. • If you don’t have time to supervise, at least stay aware of what’s going on outside. • Encourage children to play so they stay out of trouble. • Teach your children to accept and respect differences, even with the little things. • Think and speak positively about others. • Greet and compliment each other. • Say “I’m sorry” and be forgiving. • Communicate with your neighbors. Working together will bring the best results. Thank you to The Monsey View for giving us the opportunity to communicate such important topics, thus bringing unity among us and bringing Moshiach closer. Another Mother Awaiting Moshiach

Parshas

Emor By: Malka Schneps

Parshas Emor contains the mitzvah of counting sefirah: “Us’fartem lachem… — You shall count for yourselves from the morrow after the day of rest, from the day you bring the omer as a wave offering, seven weeks; they shall be complete” (Vayikra 23:15). The Mishnah Berurah states that the Rambam and others hold that this mitzvah is a mitzvah d’Oraisa even today, but according to most opinions, it is d’rabbanan nowadays because we do not bring the korban omer today. R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, culls many sources to show the tremendous chashivus and power of this mitzvah, many of which I will be including below. The Maharam Shik states that the mitzvah of sefiras ha’omer is the 307th mitzvah, which is exactly the middle of the 613 mitzvos, with 306 before and 306 after. R’ Avraham Simcha, the Baranover Rav, zt”l, adds that just as the beam in the center upholds a building, the mitzvah of counting sefirah holds up all 613 mitzvos in the Torah. R’ Biderman explains that this is because counting the omer purifies us and connects us to Hashem, as it says in the tefillah we recite when counting sefirah: “You commanded us through Moshe Your servant to count sefiras ha’omer, to purify us from our impurities...” Counting sefirah gives us the purity we need to be able to uphold the Torah. The mitzvah states, “Us’fartem lachem…” The Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh explains that by counting the omer, our neshamos will become cleansed and will shine like

68 / THE MONSEY VIEW

sapphires. The Ohr HaChaim explains as follows: “Chazal say, the souls of Bnei Yisroel are associated with the luchos... And Chazal, in Vayikra Rabbah 32, say the luchos were made from sapphire... Due to the... impurity of sin, their souls became soiled and their luster weakened. ‘Us’fartem lachem’ means that through counting the omer, you will shine like a sapphire...” The word us’fartem is related to the word sapir, which is a sapphire. R’ Biderman goes on to explain that counting the omer not only cleanses and purifies us from tumah — counting the omer acts like a vaccine, protecting us against future encounters with the yetzer hara. The Shem MiShmuel states that through counting the omer, “The heart’s nature changes somewhat such that it should not desire improper matters.” The Shem MiShmuel also explains that even if a person does not feel himself becoming purified through the mitzvah of sefiras ha’omer, he must believe that his neshamah is becoming purified. The Shem MiShmuel explains, “The amount of purity one attains varies from person to person. For some, only the source of their neshamah becomes pure. For others, their nefesh also becomes pure...” This could be the reason why R’ Mendal of Riminov, zt”l, used to count sefirah many times a day, saying, “Hayom yom… l’omer, sheheim…” The seforim say that in the summer, the yetzer hara becomes stronger, which is why many learn Pirkei Avos in the summer. The mitzvah of

sefiras ha’omer is performed at the beginning of the summer season and helps to protect us against the yetzer hara, and this protection will last. The halacha is that something that is counted cannot be nullified. Something that is bitul b’rov is nullified in a majority, and something that is bitul b’shishim is nullified at one part in sixty, but something that is counted cannot be nullified. The Orah V’Simcha explains that, ordinarily, if a person has many sins, then his mitzvos do not protect him because they become batel in the sins, chalilah. However, the mitzvah of counting sefirah is counted, and something that is counted cannot be nullified. Since this mitzvah cannot be nullified, it has the power to purify us and strengthen us in the performance of the remaining mitzvos. Furthermore, since this mitzvah is in the center of all the other mitzvos, with 306 mitzvos before and 306 mitzvos after, the mitzvah of sefiras ha’omer has the power to support the mitzvos on both sides. Purifying ourselves to live a life of avodas Hashem is something we all dream of. Many mitzvos are relatively easy to perform, while others can be quite challenging. However, we are cautioned in Pirkei Avos (2:1), “Be as careful with a minor mitzvah as with a major one, for you do not know the reward of the mitzvah.” May we all take advantage of this incredible opportunity to purify ourselves from tumah and to fortify ourselves against future transgressions with this relatively easy, yet incredibly powerful, mitzvah.

Coming Full Circle, Airmont Appoints Jewish Judge An Airmont resident who spearheaded a pair of successful religious discrimination lawsuits against the village in the 1990s has been newly appointed as a village judge. Park Avenue resident Alan Straus was appointed to the position in early April, reported Yated Ne’eman. In his capacity as one of two village judges, he will be tasked with ensuring that residents’ rights are upheld, including the religious accommodations that he championed for over two decades ago. Straus recalled the climate in Airmont when the village was founded in 1991, with one board member saying outright, “Let’s face it: The only reason we formed this village is to keep those Jews from Williamsburg out of here.” At the time, Airmont’s small Jewish community consisted of approximately 20 families. “Eleven of us were lawyers,” said Straus. “They started with the wrong crowd.” Faced with local zoning laws that prevented the establishment of shuls in the village, residents got together and filed a federal lawsuit. The result was the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, known as RLUIPA, which prevents governments from imposing unfair burdens on religious groups. The law has been utilized on several occasions when discriminatory zoning laws have been enacted, and it has successfully prevented municipalities from banning eruvs, as well as shuls. Airmont settled both lawsuits filed in the ‘90s, and relative peace reigned in the village for several years. As the village’s Jewish population began to increase, unrest began to grow and a new team, which was voted into office in 2014, headed by Mayor Philip Gigante, once again began putting new laws on the books; one of them required a minimum five-acre size for any houses of worship in the village, something that, for all intents and purposes, would prevent any shuls from being established in the neighborhood. In recent months, the village found itself slapped with two more lawsuits, one filed by a Satmar yeshivah located on Cherry Lane and another by a group of local rabbanim. Airmont made headlines again in March when Gigante admitted to election fraud and was removed from the ballot, with newcomer Nathan Bubel

74 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 15, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

voted in as the village’s new mayor. Bubel appointed Straus as a village judge shortly after taking office. Straus, who has been living in Airmont for over 31 years, said that despite the change of administration in Village Hall, there are still those who resent the growth of Airmont’s Jewish population. He noted that he can understand why village residents are concerned that their neighborhood will become congested and littered with debris, something that has happened in parts of Monsey, but that singling out an entire religious group is problematic. An advocate of zoning laws that will prohibit multi-family homes in certain areas, Straus said that newcomers have to understand that buying a house in an area that is zoned for one-family residences and then adding an illegal apartment only adds fuel to the fire. “The feeling is, if you couldn’t afford to buy the onefamily house without having a rental apartment, don’t buy the one-family house here,” said Straus. “You’re not modifying it because you need a bigger house, you’re modifying it because you want the income. And people resent that. And rightfully so.” His Airmont judgeship puts Straus in the delicate position of making legal decisions for residents of a village that he battled in court for years. “I understand the concerns of the people who live here,” said Straus. “I understand the concerns of the people who want to move in here. It’s just very difficult to balance those two.”

CHAPTER FOUR Recap: Elisheva realizes that she is now responsible for yet another expense: paying for Miri’s baby’s bris. She feels she is choking from her family’s dire financial situation. In Bratislava, 1942, Theodore, the assistant director of the Lucias Jan Catholic Children’s Home, finds an abandoned Jewish child and manages to convince the anti-Semitic director to let him take him in, assuring his boss that the child will convert to Catholicism. The boy doesn’t seem to know any information about himself, and the director names him Gustav.

“One second. Quiet,” Elisheva said. The family was sitting around the kitchen table in the midst of a rowdy supper with the attendance of the new parents, Miri and Yaakov; Binyamin, who had popped in from yeshivah to get his quilt; the older girls; and fourteen-year-old Shuki. Everyone slowly quieted down and then… Cuckoo! Cuckoo! “It’s the clock again!” Elisheva dashed into the hallway and into the dining room. “Can someone tell me what is going on here? But quietly, please, so the little kids don’t wake up.” “The clock!” Binyamin exclaimed. “Did you decide to invest the money to fix it, Mommy?” She laughed. “Not at all! The clockmaker told us that it would cost a few hundred shekels to repair, so we decided to skip it.” “And you haven’t been here the past few weeks,” Shuki told his older brother. “This is the third time that clock has come to life, out of the blue.” “Fourth,” Miri, the kimpeturin, corrected him. “Yesterday morning, when just the baby and I were alone in the house, the cuckoo bird popped out and began to chirp.”

“You mean, to call,” Riki corrected her. By this time, the cuckoo bird had stopped chirping or calling, so the grammatical nuances were pretty superfluous. The bird receded back into its place, and the little door slammed shut. “Strange,” Elisheva murmured, as she walked back to the kitchen. “The food is getting cold, everyone. And it’s 11:30 already. Shuki, you need to go to sleep.” Her fourteen-year-old wrinkled his nose. “I need to bentch with a mezuman, Mommy,” he said, trying to stifle a yawn. “I’ll bentch,” Yaakov announced, and stood up to get his hat and jacket. “Because I think I’m also going to sleep, Shuki. So don’t think you’re going to be missing much here. I have to make up a few hours from last night. I didn’t know that babies are so exhausting.” “I can tell you’re one of the youngest in your family,” Binyamin teased. ‘When my oldest child will be born, b’ezras Hashem, I’ll have plenty of experience.” In time, the meal wound down as each member of the family drifted off to do his or her own thing. Only Binyamin, Tzippy and Elisheva remained in the kitchen. “I’ll take down your blanket in just a min-

ute,” Elisheva said. “It’s a pity you didn’t tell me you were coming. I would have taken it out earlier and let it air out. I know you don’t like the mothball smell.” “Eh, I’m not as spoiled as I used to be,” her son replied. “I was so cold last night that I had a hard time sleeping.” “You’ve always suffered from the cold,” Tzippy remarked as she scraped the plates. “I don’t even use a thick quilt. I think the only time I used one was when we were kids and we went to Zeidy and Bubby Potolsky in Yerushalayim. It’s really cold there, but I love it like that.” “So it sounds like you’d prefer living in Yerushalayim than in Bnei Brak,” Binyamin said with a chuckle. Tzippy grinned. “When it comes to the weather, yes. In other ways, I’m not sure.” Elisheva went to get the blanket from the top shelf in the bedroom closet. Binyamin knew there was no point in trying to offer to climb the ladder and get it down himself. The perfectly organized closets were exclusively their mother’s domain. “In such a small place, I need to keep track of what’s going on all the time,” she would say. And the kids never stopped marveling at how much their mother was able to store in just one closet. “Now seriously, where are you going to live?” Binyamin asked his sister quietly. Tzippy turned on the water. “I don’t know,” she said, after a minute. “Not in Bnei Brak or Yerushalayim. I can start with renting in Pardes Katz, like Miri did, but I can also try from the start to settle someplace where I have a better chance of staying long-term. Maybe Yerucham or Rechasim… I dunno... one of the cheap places. Not that I know much about these things.” “Cheap places,” her brother murmured. “Nowhere is cheap. What’s cheap? An apartment that costs only 400,000 shekels, and not 800,000 or a million?” Tzippy was quiet. “And where will Tatty and Mommy get four hundred thousand from?” “You’re right,” Tzippy said. “I heard them talking last night. Mommy said she has no idea if Miri and Yaakov are expecting them to help pay for the bris, because if they are, she has no idea where the money will come from. And Tatty told Mommy that he is anyway going to the gemach today, so he’ll ask for that also. And Mommy said that—” “What Mommy said and what Tatty said is none of your business.” Elisheva stood in the doorway, holding the quilt and looking from one to the other. “Really, Binyamin, I’m surprised at you. Why do you need to talk to Tzippy about this? Just to make her feel pressured? What do

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 15, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

you want from her? That she should come and tell us that we shouldn’t give what we have to give and are happy to give?” Chastened, Binyamin rubbed his chin. “But really, where will the money come from?” he asked. “It’s not for kids to worry about,” Elisheva replied firmly. “And don’t look at me with those big eyes, my mature eighteen-year-oldto-the-chuppah boy, because right now, you are still a kid. And when your turn does come, b’ezras Hashem, we’ll happily give what we can to you, too. Relax, okay?” She dropped the blanket onto the table and went over to Tzippy. “And you as well,” she said. “It’s nice that you and Binyamin are thinking about me and Tatty, and it’s good to be realistic, but b’ezras Hashem, everything will be fine.” She lowered her voice. “And everything will work out with the bris, too. A thousand shekels more or less… we’ll manage.” Tzippy and Binyamin exchanged a glance but remained silent. Elisheva spoke up again. “And I’m asking the two of you, please, not a word about any of this to Yaakov or Miri.” “Of course,” Binyamin replied automatically. “Isn’t that self-understood?” His mother threw him a gaze that said, I should hope so! and then quickly changed the subject. Bratislava – 5704/1944

More than two years passed, and Slovakia — essentially a satellite of Nazi Germany — seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. After a period of deportations of Jews in 1942, Rav Michoel

Ber Weissmandl succeeded in reaching temporary agreements with the Nazis to suspend them. But the calm did not last. On Erev Sukkos 5704, the Hlinka Brigades went from one Jewish house to the next. The Jews were taken with no advance warning, as they were preparing for the holiday. The meat was still in their pots; here and there, half-started sukkahs could be seen abandoned in yards. It was only the opening salvo of the renewed deportations. On Motzei Sukkos of the first days, little Yosef Ludmir’s mother came with her two-year-old son to the orphanage. Theodore finally accepted him, much to the displeasure of Farash, the director. But Theodore gave him half of the contents of the fabric sachet that the Jewish mother had given him, and the director promised to be quiet. This time, he did not interfere in the selection of the name, and Theodore chose to call the child Edo. The director did not ask who he was named for. He just gritted his teeth and waited impatiently for the war to end. And end it did. And more than two years passed. No one came to look for the children, not for Edo and not for Gustav. “No one even knows about Gustav,” Theodore said confidently. “And Edo’s parents were for sure sent to the concentration camps; they won’t ever come back. The children are ours now, Farash.” “I’m thrilled,” the director grumbled. “At least it doesn’t endanger me and my status in the party that was but is no longer. Too

bad; we did some good things, but the Soviets couldn’t care less.” A child’s head popped into the room. “Sir,” he said. “Yes, Janko?” “Gustav is not here. The teacher said to come and tell you.” The director and Theodore both stood up at once. “What does that mean, he’s not here?” Theodore asked. “He’s not in class, and he’s not in his bedroom or in any other room, nor in the dining room or in the yard.” The director muttered something under his breath while Theodore ran to the office door. He looked right, then left, and then strode down the corridor. Janko ran after him. As they approached the gate, they found it ajar. “Who saw him last, before the lesson?” Theodore asked the boy. “No one.” “No one! And who saw him at breakfast?” “No one.” “And who saw him when you got up this morning?” “All of the children.” “Aha,” Theodore said, and shaded his eyes with his hand to look out toward the fields — those same fields that, until a short time ago, Gustav would stand and stare at, night after night. After Edo had arrived, for some reason, his nocturnal outings had dwindled, until they’d stopped completely. “So he slipped out after he got dressed this morning... Tell me, Janko, over the last few weeks, when you played in the yard, did you notice Gustav talking with any stranger?” The child frowned, clearly puzzled. “No.” “No one passed by the gate? You didn’t see Gustav

Fish, Chips and More Serves Two

BY: LEAH STERN PHOTO CREDIT: C. TARKIELTAUB My Courant pizza maker is a mainstay on the counter, helping me turn out breakfast, lunch and dinner. I enjoy its unique features of temperature-control, time settings and that it opens flat for a double grilling surface, acting as a quickcooking portable cooktop. These dishes can be cooked all together if you’re serving two, or individually when serving a large crowd. Line surface with parchment paper for health and cleanup benefits. Tilapia often has an earthy aftertaste. I find that the fish stores carry fresher, better-quality fish than those in the freezer. Soaking tilapia in lemon juice before cooking results in a tastier dish.

very business owner since the dawn of time has wondered what he can do to boost his business and increase worker productivity. In the past, incentives such as safer, more comfortable working conditions, higher pay rates and bonuses were significant draws for employees to produce their best. But nowadays, something has changed; the business model of incentives rarely works. In a fascinating experiment run by scientist Sam Glucksberg, two groups were pitted against each other to solve what is called “the candle problem.” The candle problem was originally created by psychologist Karl Duncker and has been modified for use in many experiments. In this particular one, Glucksberg told the first group that he was timing them to establish how long it typically takes to solve the problem. The second group was told that if they, as individuals, were within the top 25 percent of fastest problem-solvers, they’d

earn $5 each. If an individual was the fastest of all, he’d earn $20. Surprisingly, those in the group that was offered incentives finished 3.5 minutes, on average, after those who had not been offered an incentive. Glucksberg then modified the experiment, presenting the problem in a slightly different manner. This time, the results were flipped. The incentivized group solved the problem much faster than the group not offered a reward. What changed? Let’s look at the problem. In the first competition, Glucksberg presented a candle, a box of thumbtacks and matches to both groups, and then told them to attach the candle to the wall in a way that wax would not drip onto it. The experiment was prepared to appear like this:

In the second competition, Glucksberg made one modification: He removed the thumbtacks from the box, like this:

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 15, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

In the second experiment, the task became remarkably easy, due to the thumbtacks simply being removed from the box. All of sudden, the box itself was seen as a tool and not just a receptacle to hold the thumbtacks. In this experiment, the group that was offered incentives completed the task well ahead of the group simply being timed for norms. What was the difference between these two experiments, and how do they relate to business and worker productivity? In the first experiment, creativity was needed to solve the problem, whereas in the second experiment, the solution was rather obvious. They were to use the thumbtacks to attach the box to the wall and place the candle inside, like this:

The fascinating thing about these experiments was the takeaway message, which has been duplicated in many other studies. It has been proven time and again that work that requires little thought responds to the extrinsic motivation of incentives, but work that requires creativity either has no response or even a negative response to incentives! We’ve been going about business the wrong way! In the days of yore (and even still today in impoverished countries), labor for the daily dollar converted almost immediately into food to feed the family. Life itself was the motivating factor for work well done. In our modern-day society, however, the steady stream of technological and mechanical inventions means that manual labor has become largely relegated to machinery, freeing man’s mind to engage in creative pursuits. Never before

have industries relying upon the power of the human brain known such success. With this monumental rise of intellectual industries has come a significant shift in how we should be modeling business. Motivation must come intrinsically for workers in creative fields. But how do businesses foster that intrinsic feeling, that desire to reach overhead and grab the twinkling stars? Humans — especially Yidden, who place heavy emphasis on community — are social beings. We are hardwired to need other people. Historically, humans lived in tribes to provide support, safety and continuity of their people. It’s a big world out there, rife with danger, but when one is surrounded by trusted others, they can rest a bit on their haunches and let those hackles down. In the world of business, things aren’t much different. There are always forces at play that can result in a company failing. If there is a unified team, however, banding together to up their chances of success, b’ezras Hashem, then each person can relax a bit, knowing that they’re all chipping in to hold up the business. This reduces stress on the shoulders of the individual, allowing for an uptick in the flow of creative juices.

• Do you have a hard time delegating tasks to others? • Do you focus on minute details instead of the bigger picture? • Do you fear others making decisions? • Do you often take over jobs others have already begun? • Do you need constant updates on what your workers on doing? • Does your team seem uptight and tense? • Is there a feeling of fear in the work environment? If yes, you might be a micromanager, otherwise known as a “mismanager.” Micromanaging de-motivates workers, creating self-doubt and trust issues. Here’s a tip to overcome the tendency to micromanage: “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out.” – Ronald Reagan

Creating a strong company culture of trust and mutual respect is the proven way to boost productivity, creativity and worker engagement. The quickest way to kill those benefits is to remove that trust. The number one culprit? Micromanagement. As the CEO of megacompany Boxed, Cheih Huang, says, “I posit that micromanagement is just bringing in great, wonderful, imaginative people and then crushing their souls… by telling them which font size to use.” Autonomy is the defining force in whether creativity blossoms and breeds intrinsic motivation. That ability to choose when, and how, to do aspects of a given task allows workers to breathe, to feel safe and trusted. A study done in the UK tracked medical workers over the course of a 12-hour shift. Surprisingly, those who had moved more were not necessarily more fatigued than those who had moved less. It was those who felt that they had no control over their jobs that felt the most fatigue, because having someone breathe down your neck about the small tasks in life is clearly exhausting. Ricardo Semler, CEO of Semco, a huge Brazilian corporation, has

a radical take on creating company culture. When he first took over the company, he said, “Let’s give these people a company where we take away all the boarding school aspects of ‘This is when you arrive, this is how you dress, this is how you go to meetings, this is what you say, this is

Creating a strong company culture of trust and mutual respect is the proven way to boost productivity, creativity and worker engagement. what you don’t say...’ and let’s see what’s left. We said things like, ‘We don’t want to see your expense report. We don’t want to know how many holidays you’re taking. We don’t want to know where you work. We had, at one point, 14 different offices around town, and we’d say, go to the one that’s closest to your house.” Under his restructuring, the business revenue blossomed from 4 million dollars a year to the astronomical sum of 212 million dollars a year. Other companies are jumping onto this relaxedlead bandwagon and seeing success, creating companies

DON’T ABUSE THE TRUST Does your boss give you a bit of leeway at work? Don’t fall into traps, and maximize your productivity: • Monitor your cell phone and personal call time usage while at work, especially if you are in a field that deals with customers and requires set hours. • Try to keep your attitude upbeat. You’ll make the atmosphere lighter, increase your own productivity and that of your coworkers, and make a bright name for the business. • Have extra time and energy on your hands? Ask your coworkers what you can do to help out, or just pick up the slack when you see it. • Give compliments and show appreciation for others’ efforts. • Try not to take advantage of timing. Showing up late for work, leaving early often or taking extended lunch breaks when others are counting on you isn’t ethical. • Something bothering you? Don’t beat around the bush. Head to your boss and discuss it with him or her. And whatever you do, don’t fall into the trap of lashon hara, discussing your work-related woes with others unless they can actively help resolve the situation. • Have you been requested to do a job you know you can’t do well? Sometimes saying “no” is best for the business. Have the guts to calmly and rationally explain why you think you’re not the right one for the job. • Practice mirroring your boss’s positive behavior. If the boss is flexible, be sure to return the favor. • Though you must set boundaries between work and family time, do be available to step up to the plate should the business hit a bump in the road and require extra help after hours.

where workers show up when they want, if they want (some opt to work from home), and are given the ability to create their own work schedules and technique. Atlassian and Google are two companies that practice a concept called 20% Time. They pay employees to spend 20 percent of their working hours to work on anything they want. Though it seems counterintuitive, productivity skyrocketed when this concept was instituted. In any given year, about half of Google’s new products are developed during this 20% Time. Let’s get real, though; not all companies are solely based upon creativity. But no matter the industry, the carryover message remains the same: When you leave room for your employee’s wings to safely spread, they’ll probably be able to soar. Of course, creating that atmosphere of trust does come with risk. Not all employees will behave as we’d hope. Some may slack off, use their time to diddle-daddle in narishkeit, or even just pretend to be working. As employees, we have to realize that trust is a two-way street. If we value the autonomy our bosses are giving us, we have to produce. That feeling of freedom? It’s not to waste our company’s time — it’s to give us the space to flap our wings and fly. At the end of the day, the biggest boon for business is the establishment of trust. That’s really the bottom line to increase your bottom line.

Isn’t it interesting that when you’re looking for something, you suddenly notice it everywhere you turn? A spring stroll down Main Street for someone searching for the right career can result in job options that seem to be sprouting at every turn. There’s the possibility of becoming a policeman, a construction crew member, community worker, store owner, real estate broker, banker, mechanic or tailor, to name just a few. A simple stop in a local supermarket introduces you to a number of other jobs: Aside from the owner and cashier, there are the people in charge of selling and buying; customer service and marketing agents; the administrators; personal shoppers; IT services; chefs; and department managers. A bit further along, turn the corner and enter an office building. A quick scan of the directory will likely list a variety of services including accounting, law, mortgages, financial services, software development, advertising, healthcare management With this dizzying array of options, how can one even make a choice? How to know what jobs are available when new ones are and social services. Nearby created every day? Where to start, and how to ensure that the warehouses and storage right decision is made? Our 21st century career ambitions have changed from units are overtaken by the expecting our jobs to merely pay the bills, to hoping that our work will fulfill our dreams of prosperity, happiness and personal ever-growing e-commerce achievement. serious option. At around the same time, the idea of testing people for their aptitudes began to become popular. The military wanted to choose the right man for the right mission. Educational institutions wanted to choose candidates who would make successful graduates. The first aptitude tests were created for this purpose. Companies soon followed suit and began utilizing testing before hiring candidates. It was only a matter of time until people began to self-assess, and the field of individualized career services was born. Now, people could navigate the complex new job market armed with clarity in their unique set of strengths, and do the kind of work that would fulfill their personal dream. So what exactly is a strength? Is a strength different from a talent or a skill? More importantly, how can you discover what your strengths are and put them to work for you? According to the Gallup Strengths Center, “A strength is the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance in a specific activity. Talents

are naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling or behavior that can be productively applied. Talents, knowledge and skills — along with the time spent practicing, developing your skills and building your knowledge base — combine to create your strengths.” There are abilities we’re born with — natural talents and skills — and then there is the part we can learn: knowledge. As we’ve been told time and again, that “practice makes perfect,” starting with what you’re naturally good at, learning more about those subjects, and practicing a lot, are what create a strength. People who use their strengths are six times more likely to be engaged at work, and of course, perform better than those who do not. They also earn more, keep their jobs longer and gain more satisfaction from their jobs. Where can you sign up, you ask? A great place to start is with the book StrengthsFinder 2.0, which provides explanations of each of the 34 strengths as identified by Gallup. For a more personalized option, you can join the over 20 million people worldwide who’ve taken the assessment called Clifton StrengthsFinder. The test identifies a person's unique sequence of the 34 strengths. I recommend getting started by taking the short version of the test called “Top 5,” priced at a reasonable $19.99, which identifies your top strengths based on your responses to a questionnaire. To identify some of your talents on your own, can you take a moment to think about things that you do naturally well? The kind of things you have no idea how you know; you just know. Like how to choose the perfect colors for an outfit, design an area of your home, figure out directions, or draw a cartoon. Maybe you were born with talents like a beautiful singing voice, or maybe you’re a born negotiator, critic

(hey, that’s a profession!) or entertainer. These are often the kinds of things that you take for granted, but can impress others. If you’re not sure, there are all kinds of testings available to identify specialized talents useful for specific careers as well. The next step is to find an area of interest where you can apply that talent. Someone with a talent for design can choose anything from designing kitchens to prosthetics to jewelry. A talent for negotiation can be used in sales, law, PR or international relations. There may be things that you’ve always been interested in, but never considered as being related to work. Think about what kinds of books you like to read, what you like to learn about, and what kinds of conversations you enjoy most to figure out where your interests lie. Another consideration is personality. Do you prefer to work with groups of people in happening places, or does a quiet, private space appeal to you more? Do you like to know what to expect every day, and follow an orderly schedule, or does the idea of constant change and spontaneity excite you? Although personality alone is not usually a good way to make a choice, it is an important factor to keep in mind since it is often the reason people are unhappy with their work. A telling anecdote of olden times tells of parents sending their child to the market to find his employment destiny. They’d trail closely behind, allowing the curious youngster to explore, watching where his interests would lead. At the stall where he lingered, his fascination kindled, was where his future would lie. Imagine yourself the child in today’s virtual, global marketplace. Where would your feet wander, where would you stop, and where would you find your place? The market is all yours, with jobs ripe for the choosing. Find out what makes you feel like a child at play — fascinated, curious and constantly learning. And that, according to a famous proverb, is the secret to never working a day in your life. While there are more extensive strengths-finder tests with more finetuned results and actual job-profile matches, this quick test will give you an overall idea of your personal strengths in just five minutes.

This test is comprised of ten horizontal lines with four words on each line, one in each column. In each line, put the number “4” next to the word that best describes you in that line; a “3” next to the word that describes you next best; a “2” to the next best word, and a “1” by the word that least describes you. On each horizontal line of words, you will then have one “4,” one “3,” one “2,” and one “1.” For example, one choice for the first line of words would be as follows:

Now that you’ve taken the survey, what does it all mean? Each letter (L, O, G, B) stands for a particular personality type. The column with the highest score is your dominant personality type, while the column with the second highest number is your sub-dominant

type. While you are a combination of all four personality types, the two types with the highest scores reveal the most accurate picture of your natural inclinations, strengths and weaknesses, and how you will naturally respond in most situations.

The four personality types can be likened to animals to make them easier to understand and remember. Below are complete descriptions of each one.

L = Lions

Natural Strengths

Lions are leaders. They are usually the bosses at work… or at least they think they are! They are decisive, bottom-line folks who are observers, not watchers or listeners. They love to solve problems. They are usually individualists who love to seek new adventures and opportunities. Lions are very confident and self-reliant. In a group setting, if no one else instantly takes charge, the Lion will. Unfortunately, if they don’t learn how to tone down their aggressiveness, their natural dominating traits can cause problems with others. Most entrepreneurs are strong lions, or at least have a lot of lion in them.

They have a strong desire to be liked and enjoy being the center of attention. They are often very attentive to style, clothes and flash. Otters are the life of any party, and most people really enjoy being around them.

Basic Disposition: Fast-paced; people-oriented. Motivated by: Recognition and approval of others.

Time Management: An otter focuses on the future and has a tendency to rush to the next exciting thing.

G = Golden Retrievers One word describes these people: LOYAL. They’re so loyal, in fact, that they can absorb the most emotional pain and punishment in a relationship and still stay committed. They are great listeners, incredibly empathetic and warm encouragers. However, they tend to be such pleasers that they can have great difficulty being assertive in a situation or relationship when it’s needed.

Natural Strengths Patient Easygoing Team player Stable Empathetic Compassionate Sensitive to feelings of others Tremendously loyal Puts people above projects Dependable Reliable Supportive

Basic Disposition: Slow-paced, people-oriented.

Agreeable

Motivated by: Desire for good relationships and appreciation of

others.

Time Management: A Golden Retriever focuses on the present and devotes lots of time to helping others and building relationships.

Communication Style: Two-way communicator; great listener and provides empathetic response. Decision Making: Makes decisions more slowly, wants input

from others, and often yields to the input.

In Pressure or Tense Situations:

The Golden Retriever

gives in to the opinions, ideas and wishes of others. Often too tolerant.

Greatest Needs: The Golden Retriever needs security; gradual change and time to adjust to it; and an environment free of conflict. Desires: Quality relationships; security; a consistent, known environment; a relaxed and friendly environment; freedom to work at their own pace.

B = Beavers Beavers have a strong need to do things right and by the book. In fact, they are the kind of people who actually read instruction manuals. They are great at providing quality control in an office, and will provide quality control in any situation or field that demands accuracy, such as accounting, engineering, etc. Because rules, consistency and high standards are so important to beavers, they are often frustrated with others who do not share these same characteristics. Their strong need for maintaining high (and oftentimes unrealistic) standards can short-circuit their ability to express warmth in a relationship.

Natural Strengths Accurate Analytical Detail-oriented Industrious Orderly Methodical and exhaustive High standards Intuitive Controlled

Natural Weaknesses Basic Disposition: Slow-paced, task-oriented Motivated by: The desire to be right and maintain quality. Time Management:

Beavers tend to work slowly to make sure

they are accurate.

Communication Style: Beavers are good listeners, communicate details, and are usually diplomatic.

Too hard on self Too critical of others Perfectionist Overly cautious Won’t make decisions without all the facts Too picky

Decision Making: Avoids making decisions; needs lots of informa-

tion before they will make a decision.

Overly sensitive

In Pressure or Tense Situations: The beaver tries to avoid pressure or tense situations. They can ignore deadlines. Greatest Needs: The beaver needs security, gradual change and time to adjust to it. What the Beaver Desires: Clearly defined tasks, stability, security, low risk and tasks that require precision and planning.

There is no question that satisfied employees working in comfortable quarters perform at a higher level, but there are some businesses that take this equation very seriously — almost too seriously. But then again, creating an office that very quickly becomes fodder for worldwide conversation has the added advantage of gaining a business tremendous publicity, so guess who benefits double? Here are three businesses that boast offices that were designed and built with this frame of mind. Now let’s contribute to the conversation and prove that this kind of marketing genius most certainly hides in all sorts of cool working areas and zany dining corners — and even underground.

PIONEN DATA CENTER Deep under some Stockholm bedrock lies a server-housing center that is probably the most secure in the world. It can withstand a hydrogen bomb and has German submarine engines waiting off to the side to take over in case of a power outage. And if you think that such a place sounds more like a bunker than anything else, that’s because it is! Or at least was... The bunker was first built in 1943 to protect specific government functions from nuclear strike. Located nearly 100 feet under solid rock, and sealed off with doors that are almost 16 inches thick, the bunker is as secure as it can get.

Only a few years ago, the bunker was purchased by the company Bahnhof as a secure location to store their servers. It was soon transformed into a high-tech and modern-looking facility, with waterfalls, jungle greenery, a soft fog, and more cool effects. According to CEO Jon Karlung, the reason for the Bahnhof-owned Pionen Data Center’s novel design is to remind people about the employees working along with the servers, because it’s

not only data being kept in there... And, of course, he also says that “The unique design makes it a ‘talkabout’ facility. If you have been inside Pionen you will for sure tell somebody else about it.”

What the bunker looked like before it was redesigned

The conference rooom suspended over the server hall. The floor of the conference room is designed to look like the surface of the moon.

The jungle-like setting in the offices

OFFICE IN THE WOODS BY SELGASCANO Spanish architects Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano of SelgasCano designed their office with plenty of thought, because who if not architects should be based in an office that is truly one of a kind? Located in a wooded area of Madrid, Spain, this office looks like a sleek tunnel that has risen to the surface of the earth. Slide into a comfy dining area...

GOOGLE Google believes very, very strongly in keeping employees happy. Google creates working spaces that are open, inviting and artistic. No box-like cubicles allowed! Its offices contain little working pods, hammocks, and all sorts of comfy sitting areas that welcome one and all with their laptops.

While the south-facing side of the office is made from thick fiberglass and polyester materials to protect its workers from direct sunlight, the upper half of the opposite wall is made from transparent acrylic that affords the people inside a lovely view of forest life.

Google aso makes sure that its employees are well fed and never more than 150 feet from a food source. With a wide variety of eateries and cafes located in each office, and slides so that employees get there easily, you can be sure that no Google employee goes hungry. Google also informs each new hiree about their 80/20 rule, which allows each employee to spend a cool 20 percent of their working hours on personal projects (without hiding behind other tabs). And just to prove that happy workers mean good work, many of these “personal projects” have in fact inspired many new innovations. Downtime is another biggie at Google. They provide their employees with game rooms, libraries, exercise areas and more, to the point where you may begin to wonder whether the place pays to work… or play. But it seems like in some offices employees do both, with great success in both areas!

A glimpse inside...

The ultimate working space

Rachma Friedenberg, LMSW gave an uplifting and informative parenting workshop on Wednesday, May 08 at Project Ohr, the mental health branch of Monsey Family Medical Center, located at 42 Melnick Drive. A sizable crowd of women were greeted with a delicious smelling dairy spread from Yummy’s Pizza on Route 59. The attendees followed Rachma’s every word, and asked informative questions to the benefit of the crowd. Rachma discussed the differences in children with negative and positive self-esteem, and spoke about how better communication from parents can help foster a healthy self-identity and positive self image in children. The way a parent speaks to a child, according to Rachma, will “strongly impact many aspects of their child’s sense of self and will additionally impact upon their interactions and relationships with others in their life”. Rachma shared ways in which a parent can adjust their language so their child knows that they are heard, and that their feelings are real. By validating a child’s feelings, he or she will know that it is okay to have those feelings,

thereby fostering a healthy emotional response in children. Rather than berating the child for being disrespectful, parents can put aside their ego at the moment the child is upset, and say “I hear that you are very angry at something that I did. Would you like to talk about it?” rather than allowing their own ego to get in the way. Later, once the child has calmed down, it’s okay to let the child know that they did not speak very nicely, and perhaps they can find a better way of saying it next time. In this way, the child feels heard, which will teach them that they can and deserve to be respected and validated and that their feelings matter. The workshop received glowing feedback from the attendees. Some of the testimonials were: “It was really amazing and informative!”; “Amazing and clear how you explained high and low self esteem. Very insightful!”; “I really learned skills how to boost my children’s self-esteem. It was said clearly. Excellent!” Monsey Health Center invites all women of Monsey to attend future workshops.
