At RefuahHealth we know our patients. We’ve treated them before— sometimes whole families over many years. And so, we know their medical histories. Because of this relationship, they are comfortable and confident in the care they receive. When they come to us, they get our best—every time.

AN ENHANCED HIKING EXPERIENCE (Re: Photo Pages, Issue 199) Kakiat Park has been my go-to hiking destination for a few years now. I always used to take the same loop, starting on the white trail and returning on the orange. Last week, while going for a hike, I realized that the orange trail has been extended to the front of the park. I thought to myself, How brilliant! Doing the hike the other way around made so much more sense. Then I was surprised to see in The Monsey View that this change was thanks to the heimishe organization COMMSAR. How beautiful it is that we make a kiddush Hashem while helping other Yidden! Kudos to COMMSAR for their work, and kudos to The Monsey View for bringing it to our attention! Gitty Goldberger
HELP WHEN ON A JOB HUNT (Re: The Way We Work, Issue 198) I really enjoyed your recent publication about finding jobs. I wanted to make the Monsey community aware that there is a job-placing organization called Partners in Parnosoh, which is a division of Tomche Shabbos of Rockland County. They meet with people who are unemployed and send their resumes to companies with job openings that they think would be a good fit. They do not charge the employers or the people who seek employment for this service. They have placed many people in many different types of jobs. If you need a job or are looking for an employee, please call the Tomche Shabbos office at 356-0202, extension 303. P.L. FREE ISSUE 198 MAY 15, 2019

HELMET MATTERS Thank you for your fantastic magazine week after week. It is so balanced, containing humor, information, letters from community members and recipes. Can you please publish an article including an infographic on helmet safety? I see many children riding bikes (and scooters) around town — most often wearing their helmets improperly. I even saw one little boy wearing a helmet that was not fastened. I think it would be of great benefit to us all if you can publish the correct way to size and wear a helmet. Thank you! R.I.
WHILE RIDING TO PLAYGROUP I would like to bring up an issue that people may not be aware of. Many people who send their toddlers to playgroup use transportation services, and some parents may not be aware of what happens from when their child gets onto the van until he gets to playgroup or back home. I was waiting for my daughter’s bus this week when a minivan pulled up at the next driveway. The door opened, and a toddler jumped out of the van and happily started running toward his door. Not the end of the world. But not the end of the story. A second after this boy came out of the van, another kid came tumbling out! He fell onto the sidewalk and started crying hysterically. Since I was standing only a few feet away, I ran toward him and picked him up. At that point, the driver realized that something had happened, and he came out of the van to take charge of the situation. Not the end of the world. But not the end of the story. As the driver took the child and put him back into the van, I picked up the boy’s shoe, which had fallen off, and a toy that he had dropped, and what I saw next really threw me off! The van was overloaded with children! Not only weren’t all of the children buckled up, but some kids didn’t even have room to sit! Hashem yerachem! Most two-year-olds I know cannot balance themselves in a moving vehicle. Such a situation is not okay, no matter how desperate you are! If it was your two-year-old who came home crying from playgroup, I am wondering whether the driver even told you the reason he was crying. It’s possible that you are at the end of the route and have no idea what happens inside (and outside) that van until it gets to your house... May we all be able to make the right choices regarding our children and their precious lives. Hashem yishmor tzeischa u’vo’echa… A Shaken-Up Spectator
RE: REPORT CARDS ARE FOREVER (Inbox, Issue 199) Dear Broken Parents, While it is difficult to read of your struggle at seeing a less-than-stellar report card at the end of the year, the message you shared with The Monsey View illustrates an area where loving parents of 2019 can grow. Not to cause additional pain, chas v’shalom, but with this in mind, I’d like to share some insight from the other side of the desk. Report cards aren’t meant to showcase “only positive comments... that stay forever” so your child feels loved. They are a communication device between the school and the parents that a parent can use to monitor their child’s scholastic and social accomplishments, since the child spends arguably more waking hours in school than at home. If your doctor would point out that your child needs glasses or physical therapy, would you be offended? If your sixth grader doesn’t behave up to the maturity level expected, or if his spelling is far worse than a typical second grader, or if your fourth grade daughter’s math skills are on a second grade level, it’s time for you, as a parent, to help them improve. I have found that children of parents who don’t come to PTA are some of the least successful students in my class. A parent must be open to communication. Trust your child’s teacher, who has far more experience with children of your child’s specific age than you do. Open your heart to the message that your child’s teacher spends time sharing. Your child’s teacher or rebbi truly wants the best for your child and may point out failings that — because of your love for your child — you fail to see. Once you accept their words instead of acting defensive, you may be able to help your child grow. I’m not saying that teachers are perfect. Or that they know your child better than you. What they are doing is reporting what they see in school, and it would be beneficial for everyone if parents would accept it for what it is. If the report is too negative, no one says you have to show it to your child! It is meant for your eyes, with the hope that as a mature parent, you can work together with the school to the benefit of the precious neshamos. A Monsey Teacher
Dearest Mommy, I know, it’s surprising that I am writing to you this way, but I think it’s the only way I can express my feelings properly. You see, last week you wrote a letter about me in The Monsey View. You wrote how painful report cards are for you. You know, report cards are painful for me, too, but not in the way you described it. When I bring home my report card, full of D’s and F’s, deep in my little heart, I hope your

reaction will be different. Maybe this year, you wouldn’t look at me through my failing marks. I know you love me, but sometimes you make me feel as if you are a failure because of my marks. Maybe you should focus on the first part of the report card, the part that talks about important things, like derech eretz, bein adam l’chaveiro, and so on. You always say these things are more important than studies, but I get confused when you rant and rave about the nice lady who was my teacher this year. You say she is too young, too inexperienced, but I know that she put her heart and soul into me this year. It’s true, I’m not so good at math and spelling, but did you see that my responsibility improved? Did you see that I was never late this term? Did you notice these things? Did you make me feel good about it? Did you make me feel satisfied by praising me to my teacher, with a note or even without? Yes, I feel productive when you tell me how lucky I am to have such a caring, amazing teacher who sees my strengths, even though they are not academic. So, Mommy, do you think you can see my strengths? Do you think your reaction can be different? Remember, you are the best mommy in the world, no matter how well I do in school. Love, Your ElementarySchool Daughter

Parshas Bechukosai By: Malka Schneps
A king dispatched a courier to deliver a precious package. The journey would be a long and difficult one, lasting for many years, and would culminate in a climb up a treacherous mountain. If he would reach the top of the mountain and deliver his package, he was told, he could stay in the luxurious resort there and never work again, enjoying the rewards for his efforts for all of time. To aid the courier on the arduous journey, the king gave detailed instructions: After toiling to climb the most difficult parts of the mountain in all kinds of weather and challenging terrain, the courier would find the way smoothed out. The king wrote: “And if you work hard to carry your package along the journey in the right direction, and you do not follow misleading signs or give up the quest, but faithfully make it up the mountain on the correct trail, then you will find the way smoothed out. Fountains of refreshing water will appear by the trailside, and the trail itself will become smooth. Stairs will be carved into the stone, with handrails alongside. Shelters for shade and bushes of delicious and juicy berries will run along the trail.” The letter then went on to describe what would happen in the event that the courier failed to stick to the path, describing the sharp rocks below upon which he could fall. The courier took the package and set out on his journey. He carried his package dutifully

for many years. He fought and struggled his way up the mountain. For a time, he was unsure of whether he could make it. He grew tired of dry crusts of bread and canteens of old water. Finally, he climbed over the top of a boulder and came to the place of fresh water, luscious berries and cozy shelters. “This must be my reward!” he exclaimed, abandoning his journey to settle in one of the shelters. This week’s parsha begins, “Im bechukosai teileichu… — If you follow My statutes and observe My commandments, I will give your rains in their time, the land will yield its produce… You will eat your food to satiety, and you will live in security in your land… I will remove vicious beasts from the land, and no sword shall cross your land…” (Vayikra 26:36) The Torah continues listing blessings, and then goes on to say what will befall those who fail to keep the Torah as commanded. It can be all too easy to interpret this as a list of “rewards” for keeping the Torah as commanded and a list of “punishments” for not doing so. In reality, explains the Rambam in Hilchos Teshuvah, true reward and punishment take place in the Next World. The promises of plenty, peace and security in the land do bring benefit to us in this world, but the true reason we are granted these blessings is to make our way smoother and easier so that we can focus on our true job of keeping the Torah. The Rambam ex-
plains that a person who fulfills the Torah with joy benefits from an easier life in this world as well as the reward of Olam Haba, whereas a person who does not loses their share in Olam Haba and is also forced to contend with war, sickness and hunger in this world. Like the courier in the story above, we are sent into this world on a mission. Our neshamah is a package that we must safeguard and deliver intact to the Next World. If we do our job right and find that our lives are blessed with peace and abundance, we should not be fooled, like the courier in the story, into thinking that we have attained our reward. The way was made smooth and easy for the courier so that he could continue his journey, not so that he could sit and enjoy the fruit, shelter and water. Likewise, if we keep the Torah properly, it is not so that we can enjoy peace and abundance in this world. Rather, we should realize that the deeper reason behind these benefits is to enable us to go further, and use them in the proper way by deepening our commitment to the Torah and furthering our observance of its ways. “Dracheha darchei noam v’chol nesivoseha shalom. Eitz chaim hi lamachazikim bah v’somcheha m’ushar — Its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace. It is a tree of life for those who grasp it, and those who draw near are happy.” (Mishlei 3:17–18)

The need for technology protection services in our community has never been more in demand than it is now. TAG is committed to providing their technology services free of charge. Ice Cream for All as Monsey Kids Volunteer to Clean Up the Town More than 450 children rolled up their sleeves on Sunday, May 19, doing their part to keep Monsey beautiful by picking up litter at two separate locations. The clean-up campaign was arranged by Keep Rockland Beautiful and the Town of Ramapo and kicked off at 5 p.m. at Lifeplex on College Road. Armed with trash bags and plenty of determination, over 70 young volunteers spent an hour picking up litter, earning a free ice cream cone for their efforts. At 6 p.m., organizers and the ice cream truck moved over to Lake Suzanne at Warren Court, where they were greeted by nearly 400 children, all eager to do their part to make Monsey look magnificent. Yossi Margaretten, who works as a community liaison to the Town of Ramapo, said that 478 ice cream
cones were distributed as a thank you to volunteers along with a reminder to toss the paper holders in the trash and not on the floor. In addition to beautifying both sites, Margaretten said that the campaign also had an educational component. “When you have the kids picking up litter like this, it also teaches them an important lesson about not throwing papers and other things on the floor,” Margaretten told The Monsey View. Margaretten said that plans are underway to bring the anti-litter message to schools and day camps and to place trash cans in areas that see heavy pedestrian traffic to encourage people to dispose of their trash properly as they walk down local streets. “We want to make sure that Monsey is cleaner and to keep properties nice,” said Margaretten.
East Ramapo Budget Passes, Restoring Busing to Yeshivah Parents During Public School Breaks It was a solid “yes” for this year’s East Ramapo Central School District budget, with voters approving a $237 million proposal that will restore approximately 10 days of bus service to yeshivos on days when public schools are not in session. Of the 5,067 ballots cast in the May 21st election, 2,922 supported the new budget, which will trigger a 2 percent tax increase to homeowners. The new budget will change start times at some public schools to allow the district to consolidate certain bus routes, a move that one analyst predicted could yield savings of over $4 million, money that will be used to hire additional teachers and staff members. For yeshivah parents who for years have been carpooling their children to and from school during the December and February week-long public school breaks, the tax increase was a small price to pay to relieve them of endless carpools and scheduling headaches, in addition to benefiting the district’s public school students. As part of this change, buses will also be equipped with GPS tracking devices, giving parents the ability to pinpoint the whereabouts of their child’s bus. Bernard Charles and Yehuda Weissmandl, who ran unopposed, will be returning to their seats on the

school board. Ashley Leveille beat out Pastor Joselito Cintron for the third open seat by a margin of 280 votes. In an interview with The Monsey View, school board president Harry Grossman said that the district invested considerable time and effort to create a budget that took into account the needs of children in both public and private schools without creating a significant burden to taxpayers. Grossman noted that restoring busing to yeshivos during the December and February breaks would reduce the number of cars on our area’s often congested roads — good news for everyone in the area. Schools that were already providing private busing on those days would be reimbursed by the district for those services, noted Grossman. “We are totally cognizant that Rockland County has the second highest per capita taxes in the United States behind Westchester, and that taxes are way too high, but we need to service the children and parents who pay taxes for the community,” Grossman told The Monsey View. “We will continue to strive to keep taxes down which has been our objective from day one — providing top-notch service to public and nonpublic school students.”

CHAPTER SIX Recap: Elisheva takes Tzippy, her kallah, shopping for a sheitel. Sari Goodman, the wig stylist who is also their neighbor, tells them that she received an odd phone call from someone who was very interested in the names of Tzippy and her chasan, as well as when they were getting married. At the orphanage in Bratislava, the children and staff prepare for a visit from the Soviet soldiers. Bratislava – 5704/1944
The representatives of the occupying government who arrived at the orphanage turned out not to be soldiers. There were two members of the city council, one Russian policeman, and another person in uniform who introduced himself as “Anatoly Stachov, a member of the Communist Party,” but didn’t provide much detail about his exact position or rank. In any case, it didn’t interest the director much; he just kept scurrying around his guests like a starving mouse, trying to curry their favor, to the point where the older children exchanged small smiles at the sight. They had never seen the director grovel like this to anyone. Gustav did not smile. He wasn’t old enough to understand the comical scene, and besides, the only thing he could think about was which of the guests he could ask questions of without being embarrassed. He finally decided that the fat man from the city council, the guy who hardly spoke, would have time for him. The man was standing near the wall with a lit cigarette, and Gustav sidled up to him. The man took the cigarette out of his
mouth. “Go play, kid,” he said in a gruff voice. “Did you see my mother?” “Who?” “My mother. Theodore said that maybe you saw her on your way here.” The man narrowed his eyes, his eyebrows almost covering them completely. “Me?” “Yes.” “Why? Do you not know where she is?” “No, I don’t know. She traveled east, Theodore said, and that’s a place where people don’t come back from.” “So if they don’t come back, they don’t come back,” the man said decisively. “But you did come back,” the child insisted. “So maybe she also did. Did you see her?” The man looked at him with a lopsided smile. “Go play,” he repeated. “Don’t want to,” Gustav whispered quietly, so the man shouldn’t hear him. A few minutes later, he heard the director’s familiar whistle. Once again, the boys lined up in orderly rows, gazing at the guests. Anatoly Stachov delivered an endless

speech; Gustav did not understand even a quarter of it. As he wrapped it up, and everyone thought he was finally finished, he suddenly said, “Just a small question: I was asked to find out — are there any Jewish children here?” A moment of silence ensued, and then the director replied, “What? Jewish children whose parents wanted to hide them here? No. Not even one.” “I see,” the Party member said. He rubbed his hands together. “Fine, so next week, the new supervisor will be coming, and with this I think we have concluded our vis —” “One minute.” The stocky man detached himself from the wall and approached the rows of children, who were already shifting impatiently from one foot to the other. “Comrade Stachov, I think you did not get accurate information. There is one Jewish child here.” His eyes scanned the room until he found Gustav. He waved in his direction with the butt of his burning cigarette. “That boy.”

“I’m telling you that it’s worrying.” Elisheva cut the avocado into cubes as best as she could, given its uneven form. Everything worries you lately, Eliyahu wanted to say, but instead he asked, “Why? Why is it worrying?” “Well, why should anyone be inquiring about a shidduch that happened already? I mean, the couple is engaged by now! And to inquire about their names? I’m afraid that something about this shidduch is problematic, and someone wants to check into it before letting us know that.” “Speak quietly,” Eliyahu requested, taking the darkened slices of bread out of the toaster. It was 1:15 in the morning, a strange hour to be eating supper. But this was the regular time for their evening meal. They could find no other time for quiet conversation. “Tell me, Elisheva. What did she say? That the caller told them he was planning to call us?” “Yes, that’s what he told them. I don’t know if he was saying the truth or being sarcastic.” She put down the plate of salad and glanced at the kitchen door. “I feel like unplugging the phone.” She sighed and smiled at the same time, and then raised her hand in a “stop” motion. “You don’t have to tell me it’s foolish, because I won’t do it. I just said I feel like doing it.” They washed their hands and began to eat in silence. Eliyahu spoke first. “What was the man’s name?” he

ten in Chani’s neat writing. “Rosenblit? Who is that?” She put down her bag, confused. Then the name clicked in her mind, and with a gush of relief she silently thanked Hashem that Tzippy wasn’t home right now, and that she hadn’t heard the name. “I don’t know. It was someone who spoke very fast, and I hardly understood a word. He asked for my mother or father, and when I said they are not home, he left this number and said you should please call him back.” A night earlier Elisheva had been sure that if she’d get such a call, she would not be able to do a thing, and if anything needed to be done, she would leave it to Eliyahu. But since then, morning had dawned, and last night’s fears had morphed several times over into different forms. Now, holding the piece of paper with the phone number, she felt more curious than anything else. Intensely curious, in fact. What did this Rosenblit want? “I’ll call,” she said. “Thanks, Chani.” Where could she find a quiet place to make the call? Her bedroom? Two-year-old Nati was lying on her bed, focused on his pacifier as he tried to fall asleep. On the floor, Shloimy and Bentzy were silently coloring together. She didn’t want to disturb the idyllic scene. The kitchen was out of the question, and so were the dining room, the girls’ closed-off porch, and the little bedroom. She’d go outside. So that was why she found herself standing behind the building, huddled between the garbage dumpster and the parking lot, calling the mysterious Mr. Rosenblit.

For this kiddush , we opted for a modern-rustic decor. Aiming for light floral tones, we hit the perfect combination with muted greens and pinks, set off by a sophisticated deep purple. Wooden trays lend an outdoorsy touch to the tablescape.
A dollop of whip topped with fruit elevates this tower of Bubby’s Polochintas blintzes to an elegant, eye-pleasing buffet item.
Since we used horizontal runners for each pair of place settings, we went with a light runner-like trail of petals in soft tones across the table’s length.
What better time for a cheese charcuterie board than Shavuos? We combined aged cheeses with figs, red and green grapes, and red and green olives, so this spread matches right in.

The plates and flatware were handpicked for their modern look that is not too sleek for the rustic ambiance we aimed for. Tulips are available in the most delightful colors and make for the perfect Shavuos/spring place setting.
What’s a garden theme without some dainty butterflies?
A store-bought fruit drink in the right shade is refreshing for the eyes and palate.
These leaf plates blend in with the coloring and theme and are the perfect size for tasters.

We opted for a Greek salad for bolder hues of the same color families.
A few delicate flowers on a lucite candelabra makes for an elegant yet understated centerpiece.
Fruits always add a pop of color to a table. Here we chose vivid colors that blend right in.

Ahh, cheesecake! This curl-topped masterpiece can be customized to match your color scheme.
These cheese minis are surprisingly easy to create and add a touch of delicacy to this floral scene.
Thank you to the Set Your Table staff for their invaluable input and inspiration, and for their enhancements to the tablescape.

Classic Cheesecake
THE MONSEY VIEW / 143
Over the years I’ve made many pretty confections, but cheesecake is by far my favorite one to decorate. The taste is consistently sublime and the possibilities are endless. The recipe featured has become my signature cheesecake. With its tricolor curls in classic neapolitan shades, it is the perfect centerpiece for your Shavuos dairy kiddush.
CRUST 1 stick butter, melted 1 sleeve honey graham crackers, plus 3 more crackers
FILLING 4 boxes unwhipped cream cheese (at room temperature) 5 eggs 1¼ cups sugar 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
GANACHE GLAZE 4 oz. heavy cream or pareve whipped cream 1½ bars milk chocolate
CURLS 1 container (7.5 oz.) of each: Pink, brown and white Gold Confections E-Z Melt Baking Chocolate
BUTTERCREAM BORDER (OPTIONAL) 2 sticks margarine 1 box (1 lb.) confectioners’ sugar
Ingredients sponsored by:
144 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 29, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
DIRECTIONS 1. Fill a deep roaster pan halfway with water and place on the bottom rack of the oven. 2. Preheat oven to 350°. The water in the pan will heat, creating a moist environment for the cheesecake to bake in. This will give the cheesecake an amazing texture. 3. If you wish to use a springform pan like I did, place the springform base on a piece of parchment paper, and trace it. Cut out the parchment circle. Reassemble the springform pan and spray it well with cooking spray. Place the paper in the pan and spray again. This will enable you to easily transfer your cake from the springform base. 4. Crush the graham crackers to fine crumbs and mix with melted butter. Press down evenly into the pan. 5. For the filling: Gently mix all ingredients with a mixer just until no lumps remain. Pour filling onto crust. 6. If using a springform pan, wrap the pan on the outside very well with heavyduty silver foil. 7. Very carefully, place the pan with the cake into the roaster pan filled with water and bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Let cool in the oven for another half hour with the door slightly ajar. Remove cake from the roaster pan, and let it cool completely.
8. Prepare the ganache glaze: In a small pot heat the cream until hot, but not boiling. Break the chocolate into pieces and place into cream. Wait a few minutes, until the chocolate is melted, and whisk the ganache until it is nice and smooth. Let cool until it is no longer watery, but still runny. Spoon 2–3 tablespoons onto the center of the cheesecake and spread gently to the edge. Spoon more glaze as needed onto the center and spread.
CHOCOLATE CURLS 1. Melt the brown E-Z Melts. Place in the smallest size rectangular loaf pan and wait until it hardens at room temperature. Do not freeze or refrigerate. You will need to be very patient. This process might take several hours. 2. Melt the pink E-Z Melts and pour it on top of the brown layer. Wait until it hardens at room temperature. 3. Melt the white E-Z Melts and pour onto pink layer. Wait until it has completely hardened at room temperature. 4. As soon as block has hardened, carefully remove the block of chocolate from the pan. Using strong pressure, peel curls from the side of the block onto a plate. The first few of shavings will not be so big. 5. Using a toothpick, carefully place the shavings onto the cake.
BUTTERCREAM BORDER 1. In a mixer, beat 2 sticks of margarine with 1 box (1 lb.) confectioners’ sugar until smooth. Add a drop of pink food coloring and mix. 2. Fit a piping bag with a petal tip #125 or tip of your choice. Pipe the border all around. For an easier alternative, place pecan halves around the perimeter of the cake.

Adorned with delicate pansies and daisies, these cheesecakes are simply stunning. The soft pastel shades invite you into a spring garden in full bloom. Baking the cakes in the floret muffin cups is an easy method to achieve a gorgeous look. Yield: About 13 to 15 mini cheesecakes
INGREDIENTS Floret baking cups (large) Mini plates 15 chocolate sandwich cookies
FILLING 2¼ containers whipped cream cheese 1 cup sugar 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 3 eggs 2 T. cornstarch 1 cup sour cream
GANACHE 1 bar (3½ oz.) good-quality milk chocolate 3 oz. (in weight) heavy cream or whipped cream Ingredients sponsored by:
148 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 29, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. Fill a deep roaster pan with water halfway and place on the bottom rack of the oven. 3. Prepare a cookie sheet with 15 large size floret muffin cups. Place a sandwich cookie in each. In a bowl, combine all filling ingredients with a mixer just until there are no more lumps. 4. Fill muffin cups with batter almost to the top. Bake for 30 minutes. The cheesecakes should not turn golden. 5. Let cool completely. Place cakes in the freezer for one hour. Loosen each cake from the muffin cup very gently and invert them onto individual mini plates. This will make it much easier to decorate and transfer as necessary, as the cakes are very soft. 6. Prepare the ganache, using the recipe and directions listed for the Classic Cheesecake on the previous page. Wait until the ganache cools to a syrupy texture, and fill a piping bag with the ganache. 7. Using scissors, snip off a tiny tip of the piping bag to get a thin flow. Pinch the bottom of the piping bag to stop the
flow between glazing cakes. Using a backand-forth motion, pipe the ganache onto the tops, making sure it drips down each indentation. Put cakes in the fridge to cool .
8. Using the buttercream recipe listed for the Classic Cheesecake on the previous page, and a piping bag fitted with a petal tip 104, pipe petals around the cheesecakes.
FONDANT FLOWERS 1. On a baking mat dusted with confectioners’ sugar, roll out some fondant very thinly. 2. Using fondant cutters, cut flowers and let them dry on a painter’s palette (as pictured) or in an egg carton.
3. Pipe a dot of buttercream in the center of the flowers and spoon some sugar pearl sprinkles on them. I used a veining mat and a ball point tool to ruffle the edges of the flowers.
NOTE Fondant does not do well in the freezer, so if you intend to freeze the cheesecakes, place the fondant flowers on them when they are completely
defrosted. You can make the flowers well in advance and leave them at room temperature.

STEPPING INTO NYC’S
FLOWER DISTRICT, it’s hard to believe that it’s in the midst of a concrete jungle. Just yards away, if someone wants to enjoy nature’s floral offerings, they have to make do with rooftop gardens atop cold structures of steel. But heading down 28th Street in Midtown, between 6th and 7th Avenues, the sight is one of life, of growth, of vivid colors. Sleeves of roses in muted tones brushed with dainty streaks of colors are lined up near bright, bold tulips. The floor is covered in palettes of flowers. Buckets are brimming with calla lilies and peonies. Exotic blooms and elegant plants all stand at attention in this floral fantasyland, waiting to be selected by discerning purchasers. And, oh, the smell! It wafts through the area, and visitors relax their pace to take in the aroma of lilies and chrysanthemums with a whiff of lilac and hyacinth. At 3:00 a.m., while even the city
156 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 29, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
that never sleeps is cloaked in night, delivery trucks start rolling into the flower market. Double-parking along the block, they unload their wares, freshly cut stems transported from all over the world. The city
sidewalks are quickly transformed into a lush passage of greenery. There’s no time to waste, because by 5:30 a.m. the place will be teeming with wholesalers, florists and event planners looking to get their hands
May 29, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 157 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
The Journey of a Bloom Many of the stems you enjoy have had quite a journey to your vase. A simple red rose may very well likely have been grown in Colombia. It was snipped, put into a hydration solution and kept in a refrigerated room. It was flown from Bogota via a cooled plane to Miami, passed through customs, and then shuttled up to New York in refrigerated trucks. The florist visited the market and brought the rose to his shop. By the time you purchased it and placed it in your vase, it might have been roughly four days from when it had been attached to the ground. That’s just one example. Flowers get shipped from Holland, Eretz Yisroel and California (among many other places) directly to New York. There are also many flowers that are grown in New Jersey, or in greenhouses nearby.
158 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 29, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
on the day’s best cuttings, because the purchase of flowers can only done by touch, smell and human interaction. In the early morning light, the sound of negotiating is heard, as vendors and buyers reach satisfactory agreements. Nothing is priced in the flower market, and haggling is sometimes the way to snag a good deal. Once a bundle — or twenty — exchanges hands, its new owner slides it into his waiting van to bring to his shop or functions. And then he returns to scout the flower market for the rest of his needs. Once the mad morning rush is over, at about 8:00 a.m., everyone is welcome to come browse and take home some thrilling finds. No license is required to shop in the flower market, and as the wholesale account holders leave, the general public trickles in. But don’t be too late, because some vendors start to pack up as early as 10:30, and by early afternoon, most shutters are down and the sidewalk vendors’ wares are shuttled away. The New York flower district dates back to around 1870, when immigrants in search of employment established a previously untapped market. Until then, flowers were purchased directly from growers. Now, these entrepreneurs assumed the position of wholesalers, who sold the growers’ flowers to florists and other customers for a commission. These floral transactions originally took place near the E. 34th Street ferry landing. By the mid-1890s, most flower wholesalers moved to 6th Avenue between 26th and 29th Streets, wanting
to be closer to the upscale department stores and residences, as well as other attractions in the area. There, roughly the area where it still is today, the flower district flourished for years. By the 1970s, many large wholesalers began to migrate to the suburbs, and many more followed in a steady trickle. Over the years, the vendors in the flower district have dwindled, many of them due to rising rent prices as nearby hotels and condos went up. In addition, Midtown parking lots have also been eradicated by the changing real estate scene, making the transport of the merchandise from the congested streets that much more difficult. The market today, with a handful of second- and third-generation vendors, is but a relic from the past; while it once boasted close to 70 wholesalers, in 2004 there were 44, and today there are approximately two dozen. However, in comparison to Manhattan’s fish market, meatpacking district, diamond district and garment district, each but a hint of their former glories, the flower market is still blooming and budding, spreading its scent throughout Manhattan streets.
Navigating the Market • The best time for the general public to visit the flower market is late morning — after the wholesale accounts have left, but early enough before the vendors close. • Due to narrow aisles and lack of sidewalk space, strollers are not recommended. • Go green! Sidewalk vendors, as well as some shops, only accept cash. • If you’re looking for a bargain, later in the morning you can get some stems at a discount. • Flower shopping in the market is totally self-service. • Most blooms are sold in bundles, sometimes with 30 or 50 individual pieces per bundle. • While most of the vendors allow anyone to purchase their wares, some only deal with wholesale accounts. • While haggling can get you savings, most prices are consistent and don’t vary much between vendors. • If you are purchasing multiple bunches and want to browse without carrying them on yourself, you can stash your flowers on shelves located in the back of most shops. • The two biggest vendors are Associated and Dutch Flower Line, but there are plenty of great smaller vendors as well.

Painful as it is for me to recount this embarrassing part of my past, I feel every word will be worthwhile if only it can spare others from allowing their personal struggles to reach the boiling point mine did. At this time of year, when we focus on improving ahavas chinam, the love for our fellow Yid, I want to share what an impact our uncontrolled negative behaviors can have. And though it may sound extreme, I assure you that I myself could hardly believe I went this far… s the father of a growing family, secure in my position in life, I should have been content. I was content — for the most part. Until I’d bump into my neighbor Reb Fishel. Fishel and I went back many years. We had learned in the same yeshivah, lived in the same neighborhood and davened in the same shul. I respected Fishel, and I believe he respected me as well. Yet every time our paths crossed, I could not help but sense a little kernel of resentment — or, to be more honest with myself, a sizable sapling of deep envy — sprouting inside me. I was successful, but near Fishel, I felt tiny, insignificant. Fishel was a model of success, of good-heartedness. He was an outstanding scholar and knew just what to say to everyone he met. His pleasant manner, wisdom and willingness to help endeared him to all. Naturally not as charming or talented, I did not come close. When Fishel was appointed as gabbai of our shul, my antipathy grew immeasurably. I am embarrassed to admit that I found myself feeling angry, hostile and jealous every time I saw him. I could not stand being in his presence. I knew I was wrong, but could not help myself. Things reached a climax during the weekend of Lag Ba’omer. That year, Lag Ba’omer was on a Sunday. On the Friday before, my wife had given
rah, and one aliyah after another passed without Fishel calling my name. Fishel had decided not to give me my deserved turn! The fury that had been festering within me came bubbling to the surface. Here was my chance to release some of my pentup jealousy and antagonism. I even had proof that Fishel disliked me! When davening was over and the mispallelim were getting up to leave, I approached Fishel, and to the disbelief of all those around me — and even myself — I delivered Fishel a powerful slap on his cheek. His face reddened in shame, and he busied himself by bending down to pick up his glasses that had fallen to the ground from the impact. Not waiting to see what would happen next, I ran out of shul as quickly as I could, desperate to escape the shocking spectacle I had created. That night, on Motzei Shabbos, our shul was set to have a bonfire in honor of Lag Ba’omer. Understandably, my shame made it impossible for me to participate, but my children were desperate to take part in the festivities. Though I had discharged some fuel of my internal fire, the angry passion still blazed within me. I would not send my sons to shul without me in the shadow of this public dispute. It would stand out as an obvious humiliation to me. Instead, we would make a fire of our own! I took a small bottle of kerosene and found a clearing in a neighborhood not far from our home. My sons gathered twigs and we lit our little bonfire. When I noticed the flames getting weaker, I bent over to add some more kerosene, and suddenly, my hand felt hot. I had not realized that my hand was damp from the kerosene, and as I neared the fire, the flames leaped up, licking my right hand fiercely. I tried putting the fire out with my free hand, but by then my suit had caught fire. I quickly pulled it off, only to notice that my shirt was already in flames as well. By the time I smothered the flames on my clothes, my hand was badly burnt. I rushed to the emergency room for urgent treatment for my burns. About a week later, infection set in and my doctor prescribed heavy antibiotics. I was very weak

There was just no way I would be able to go over to Fishel and ask him for an aliyah. Finally, I decided to ask one of the bachurim sitting near me to request an aliyah on my behalf. Soon the baal korei began to read from the To-

from the strong doses of medication to the point where I was practically bedridden. To add heartache to an already difficult situation, I received a message that a relative of mine had forwarded some funds to me in advance of the upcoming yom tov of Shavuos. I was grateful, of course, but could not leave the house to pick up the money. My relative waited a few days, but when I did not arrive to collect the envelope, he found some other worthy cause to donate it to. I felt fragile and vulnerable. On Shavuos, I mustered the strength to go to shul. Not to my usual shul, of course. I still could not entertain the thought of seeing Fishel. Instead, I davened elsewhere and returned home for the first yom tov meal. After the seudah, I began to feel strong stomach pains and could not return to shul to learn. I could hardly lift myself off the couch and certainly could not focus or concentrate on a sefer. I so badly wished to spend my Shavuos night learning, though, that I asked my son to read divrei Torah to me. He began to learn aloud from a sefer, and among the topics he touched upon was the concept of punishment and reward. “Those who display bad middos,” he read, “are repaid especially harshly.” It was as if a lightbulb turned on inside me. My hand, the very one that had struck Fishel unjustifiably, was causing me such suffering! Was it my
hand that had initiated the downward spiral of my pitiful situation? I could not be comfortable in my own skin. How could I live with myself knowing I had wronged a fellow Yid? Who knows how much worse my condition could become? In spite of my debilitated state, I dragged myself to a standing position. “Come,” I said to the surprise of my son. “We’re going to shul.” Slowly, we walked down the block to my regular old shul, where I knew I would certainly find Fishel. The walk took twice as long as it usually did, my feet wobbling unsteadily — but my resolve was steady. I would set things straight. I would apologize and put this incident behind us. As we neared the entrance to the shul, I broke out in a sweat. How could I do this? I still could not bring myself to enter the halls in which I had humiliated my neighbor and myself, unrestrained. I could not fathom standing face to face with Fishel. After a few more minutes of internal struggle, I had my son go inside to ask if Fishel would come out to me. Fishel came outside, and when I saw his face, I could not open my mouth. I simply burst into bitter tears. Fishel watched me silently, and I continued crying for a couple of minutes. Finally, Fishel said, “I understand that you hit me because I did not give you an aliyah, but I have a question: Why didn’t you simply come over to

me? Why didn’t you ask for an aliyah? I had no idea you had a baby; I didn’t know you were a chiyuv!” I continued sobbing silently, unable to look Fishel in the eye. “Many times,” Fishel continued, “boys come over to the gabbai with instructions to give aliyos to various mispallelim. I learned never to listen because sometimes they’re just looking to create fun, and those people don’t really need to be oleh.” Listening to his words, I realized that he had been holding it against me all this time. He was upset at my behavior, and rightfully so! My emotions aroused, I mustered my courage and put words to my thoughts. “Fishel,” I said quietly, “let me explain.” I went on to tell him the truth. “It was my bad middos. I should have worked on myself, but I didn’t. I let my jealousy of your success take me to very bad places.” Fishel surprised me with his response. “I would be so happy if you took over my position as gabbai! It causes me work, but no pleasure.” I looked at him in awe. His public esteem held no glamour for him! He would do anything to be an ordinary Yid, joining the minyan like everyone else! And here I was, imagining that the taste of a position of public respect was sweet… After talking for a while, I felt I had somewhat pacified Fishel, and I returned home. By the time Shavuos was over, my condition had significantly improved. But more important to me was the internal healing of my thoughts and emotions that I could already feel taking place.

A much-beloved flower, the orchid is a popular choice when it comes to bouquets, garden plants and even houseplants. Orchid lovers say that one reason this flower is so popular is that it tends to bloom for relatively long — between six weeks and three months, depending on the species and its location — in contrast to other flowering plants. And, of course, the beauty of an orchid is something that simply cannot be taken for granted.
Each species of orchid has its individual shape and color, but they all have one thing in common: their undeniable beauty. Besides for their remarkably bright colors and beautiful shapes, some say that these flowers are so pleasing to the eye because each orchid bloom is perfectly symmetrical, and so when looking at a bloom, it seems to be looking right back!
Since an orchid bloom can grow to considerable size, mature blooms grow upside down due to their weight.
Orchids can survive in almost any climate, except in extreme heat or extreme cold. That’s why this flower can be found on every continent aside from Antartica, with documented species numbering over 25,000!
The only orchid species that is commercially grown to be used in food production is the Vanilla planifolia, and is the source of everything vanilla! The taste is extracted from the orchid’s pods, which are commonly referred to as beans.
The largest orchid plant (Grammatophyllum speciosum) according to the Guiness Book of World Records is referred to as either the tiger orchid, giant orchid or queen of orchids, and has had individual specimens measuring 25 feet in height! This giant orchid gained much popularity when a tremendous orchid plant was on display at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.

For orchid enthusiasts, much interest lies in unusually shaped orchids that resemble animals, birds and more. Here is but a sampling of these remarkably shaped species:
The white egret flower (Pecteilis radiata) is an orchid that resembles a white egret with great detail, down to the fringed edges that look incredibly like the feathers of a white egret in flight.
Caleana major, or large duck orchid, looks like a duck in flight.
The blooms of the Ophrys insectifera, as can be deduced from its name, look exactly like large flies! It is fascinating to note that these fly orchids attract the kind of creatures they resemble, and this is how these flowers get pollinated.
The parrot flower (Impatiens psittacina) is another orchid that resembles a flying bird.
Anguloa uniflora is another lovely orchid that is either called the swaddled babies orchid, or the tulip orchid. Are any explanations necessary, really?
The dove orchid (Peristeria) is an especially beautiful flower. This orchid bloom looks like a dove resting in its nest.
This odd-looking orchid (Dracula simia) looks exactly like the face of a monkey! Its common name is inevitably‌ the monkey orchid.
