Juicy Pulled Chicken Sliders 6 soft pretzel mini buns 1 ½ lb Tarnegol chicken breast 4 cups chicken soup (or salted water) 1 cup honey bbq sauce 1 tbsp soy sauce Salt to taste Optional additions:

Lettuce, Chili Peppers, Coleslaw, Pickles, Sautéed Onion

Add chicken and chicken soup to a medium sauce pan over low heat. Simmer for 45 minutes. Remove from heat, and let the chicken cool in the pot with a closed lid. Once cooled, remove the liquid – leaving approximately ½ cup in the pot. Use two forks to pull the chicken. Add bbq sauce, soy sauce and salt to taste. Stir to combine and heat over low flame until it reaches a gentle simmer. Cook it for 2-3 minutes and remove from heat. Assemble the sliders by placing pulled chicken on the mini pretzel buns and add your choice of vegetables and toppings.

(Re: The Making of a Day Camp, Issue 202) From all the great advice shared by Mrs. Pessy Pollak in her article on day camp tips, there’s one that can’t be stressed enough: “Parents will be happy when they don’t have to be involved in preparing for activities.” Homework during the school year is unavoidable and productive. Come summer, we parents really need a break from preparing for the day’s programs. Directors and counselors, please try your best not to include us; we want to spend any extra time we have giving our kids a quality summer experience at home. F.P. P.S. I was so happy to see Gitty Luria’s name again in your wonderful magazine. She sure didn’t disappoint with her list of amazing ideas.

ZERA SHIMSHON DVAR TORAH/SEGULAH Recently, there has been lots of interest in the divrei Torah of the Zera Shimshon. The author, a gadol from Italy (1706-1779), passed away childless and implored people to learn from his sefer, writing that he would advocate in Heaven on their behalf for children, health and livelihood. Many people have seen salvation in the merit of this learning, while doing a true chesed with a gadol from hundreds of years ago. I’d like to publicize that a one-page English translation is available on the weekly parsha by emailing zerashimshon@gmail.com. Thank you for the publication and this platform. Name Withheld

NOT FOR PUBLIC USE Thanks for providing a forum to discuss relevant topics, thereby helping resolve important issues. I wanted to bring another issue to the attention of mothers out there. Taking a bike or scooter that belongs to someone else is geneivah. Some kids just ride off with whatever bike or scooter they find, and then we have to search for our belongings all over the entire block. Very often we don’t find our bikes, even though they have our name on them. Riding toys are very expensive to constantly replace — mothers, please teach your kids to ask permission and to return any borrowed items responsibly. Thanks for letting me share my view and for a wonderful reading experience each week! R.W.

CROSSWALK CAUTION! Dear Drivers, I want to remind you of a simple law that few seem to follow. A crosswalk is there for pedestrians. We drivers must yield when we notice a person waiting to cross. On Maple Avenue and Phyllis Terrace, the town added yellow blockers since drivers were ignoring the white markings on the road, and these blockers have made a difference. At Route 306 and Rita Avenue, however, many drivers do not bother yielding to pedestrians, and it’s happened more than once that when I stopped to let someone cross, the car behind quickly cut around me — nearly hitting the person crossing! This is not a joking matter. Please obey the law, which after all, reflects basic mentschlichkeit and is a chesed to boot. Sincerely, Y.F. The Monsey View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@themonseyview.com.

Parshas Behaaloscha By: Malka Schneps

It says in this week’s parsha, “On the day the Mishkan was erected, the cloud covered the Mishkan… and at evening, there was over the Mishkan a likeness of fire until morning. So it was always; the cloud covered it and there was an appearance of fire at night, and when the cloud would be taken up from the tent, and afterward, Bnei Yisroel would travel; and in the place where the cloud settled, there would the Bnei Yisroel encamp.” (Bamidbar 9:15–17) The Nesivos Sholom points out that when we were originally commanded to build a Mishkan, we were instructed, “V’asu li Mikdash v’shachanti b’socham — And they shall make Me a sanctuary, and I will dwell in their midst” (Shemos 25:8). Bnei Yisroel are instructed to build a Mishkan, and then told that Hashem will dwell b’socham — in them. The Nesivos Sholom points out that we are not enjoined to build a Mishkan so that the Shechinah should dwell in the Mishkan, but so that the Shechinah can dwell in us. We are each to build our own Mishkan, a space within our hearts, fitting for the Shechinah to dwell in. The Nesivos Sholom finds further proof that we are all commanded to build a Mishkan from the fact that the Torah says, “On the day the Mishkan was erected…” which is a passive voice, rather than the direct, “On the day Moshe erected the Mishkan…” By leaving who had erected the Mishkan vague, the pasuk

88 / THE MONSEY VIEW

broadens the possibility of who is doing the constructing to include all of us. At the same time, the pesukim forewarn us that on the very day when we do bring the Shechinah within our hearts, we can expect dark clouds to descend and darken our vision. As we face the darkness when Hashem is hidden, we will also face fire, which represents the desires inflicted upon us by the yetzer hara, as it says, “So it was always; the cloud covered it and there was an appearance of fire at night.” The Nesivos Sholom warns that the way for Klal Yisroel in this world is that we face dark times when Hashem is more hidden; our vision becomes clouded, and the yetzer hara adds fire to our passions. We are tested and challenged. But there will also be times of light, as the Torah states: “And when the cloud would be taken up from the tent, and afterward, the Bnei Yisroel would travel…” The times of darkness and struggle lead us to a better place, a place of light and growth. The darkness dissipates, our path grows clear, and we ourselves can move forward. We must know when the time is right to move forward or when the right thing is to set up camp and wait. It is during the times of light that we journey, but during times of darkness we must stand still and hold our ground. It says in Koheles (2:14), “A fool walks in darkness.” Times of

darkness are not the times during which we should strive to reach new madreigos. Only a fool would head out into the darkness. Our avodah during dark times is to maintain our level and not, chalilah, go down. The Nesivos Sholom brings proof from the pasuk, “When the cloud lingered over the Mishkan for many days, Bnei Yisroel kept the charge of Hashem and did not journey” (Bamidbar 9:19). Whether the darkness is brief or whether it lingers, we must patiently bide our time and not set off prematurely on a spiritual journey when the time is not right. We must be content to serve Hashem in the darkness for as long as necessary. There is hope to be found in the dark times as well. Hashem is no less present in times of darkness than in times of light — He is just more hidden. In fact, at Har Sinai, when we received the Torah, it says, “Behold, I am coming to you in the thickness of the cloud, so that the people will hear as I speak to you…” (Shemos 19:9). The Torah is reassuring us that Hashem speaks to us even from within the darkness of the cloud. Hashem never abandons us. It is inevitable that we will face times of darkness in our lives. Our job is to realize that our duty then is to hold our ground and wait until the darkness dissipates before trying to move further in our journey. At the same time, we should take comfort in the fact that Hashem is with us every step of the way. We are never alone.

Yeshivah Students Pay Final Respects to Former Monsey Fire Chief More than 300 yeshivah students turned out on June 12 to pay their respects to the former head of the Monsey Fire Department, lining Route 306 as the funeral procession for Chief Richard Lagarde made its way north toward the Brick Church Cemetery where Chief Lagarde was laid to rest. The yeshivah students were stationed outside their schools, with students from Meor Hachaim Viznitz standing on Route 306 near West Maple Avenue, while a short distance away, boys from Yeshivah Darkei Emuna Munkatch and Mesivta Shaarei Arazim were positioned just south of Edison Court. A Rockland Hatzoloh night watch vehicle and the Monsey Chaverim Command Center were among several vehicles that took part in the funeral procession, which also included a vintage fire truck. Over his 47 years with the fire department, Chief Lagarde served twice as chief of department at the Brewer Fire Engine Company Number One on Grove Street, first from 1990 to 1992 and then from 2013 to 2016, serving in various line officer positions in the interim. He also served as an elected fire commissioner of the Monsey Fire District and as the Town of Ramapo’s director of building and grounds for the past 31 years. Chief Lagarde passed away on June 7 at the age of 64.

Rabbi Yisroel Kahan, a community liaison to many local law enforcement agencies, who knew Chief Lagarde for many years, made the arrangements with the yeshivos, all of which were eager for the opportunity to honor the fire chief on his final journey. He said that Chief Lagarde’s wife Denise was moved to tears by the show of respect from the yeshivah students and that members of the fire department were equally touched. “It is important to realize that a small action can make a big kiddush Hashem,” said Rabbi Kahan. He also noted that he has gotten feedback from firefighters in Connecticut and others who messaged him privately

telling him how beautiful it was to see Jewish children taking time out of their day to publicly display their gratitude to a dedicated public servant.

E. Coli Concerns Prompt Massive Flour Recall A popular brand of unbleached all-purpose flour is being voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer because of concerns of possibly E. coli contamination. What amounts to 14,218 cases of fivepound bags of King Arthur Flour are being recalled because of reports that certain wheat used to make the product has been linked to an ongoing outbreak of E. coli. Batches of flour that are affected bear “best used by” dates of December 7, 8 and 14, 2019, and lot numbers L18A07C, L18A08A, L18A08B, L18A14A, L18A14b, L18A14C. There have been no reports of any illnesses linked to King Arthur flour. A statement released by the company noted that consumer safety is its highest priority and advised the public that flour should always be baked before eating and to wash their hands, utensils and work surfaces after coming into contact with uncooked flour or any raw dough products containing unbaked flour. Anyone in possession of the affected bags of flour is encouraged to take it back to the place of purchase or to call the company’s consumer hotline at 866-797-9178.

Oh, Deer — Unconventional Shopper Roams Into Palisades Mall Store The Palisades Mall has been known to attract consumers from all over, but a fourlegged visitor who hit the shopping center last week may have been the most unusual one ever. The Clarkstown Police Department reported that a deer made its way into the mall, with a recording by a witness showing the animal walking into the Dick’s Sporting Goods store on the third floor and scampering down the aisles. How the animal ended up in the shopping center is unclear. A store employee was able to get the animal safely out of the store. “You just never know what you will come across in a day’s work!” said police.

CHAPTER NINE Recap: Eliyahu and Elisheva meet with the lawyer, Rosenblit, who tells them about his elderly client, Alexander Korman from Australia, who wishes to commemorate his deceased parents by paying for the wedding of a couple bearing the same names as them — Peretz and Tziporah Genendel. However, the couple would need to get married on his parents’ wedding anniversary, which is less than five weeks away. In Bratislava of 5708/1948, a Jew from the Agudas Israel Rescue Committee bribes a Russian Party member to help him figure out whether there are any Jewish children in the Lucius Jan orphanage.

Yerushalayim

“A wedding on Rosh Chodesh Teves. That is the only thing you have to do,” Rosenblit said as he took a binder out of his drawer that had apparently been waiting for this very moment. “He would also be happy to receive an invitation to the wedding, but it would be purely honorary. His health precludes him from traveling to Israel.” He pulled a page out of a sheet protector. “This is a copy of the contract,” he noted, and pushed it toward them. “What about after the wedding? Is he going to have any other demands then?” Eliyahu examined the photocopied page. Elisheva also looked at it, but she was too confused to process its contents. This was impossible. Or maybe it was possible. It was a scam. It was real. Someone was deceiving them. This was the answer to her tefillos. It was too delusional to be real. But then, it seemed reasonable and well founded. Rosenblit had even shown them copies of the Australian man’s ID documents. “For example, will he want them to keep in touch with him?” Eliyahu, who was very

grounded, and remained so now, was trying to choose his words carefully. “Even if he is Torah observant, as you say he is, I wouldn’t exactly want him to ‘adopt’ our couple. He won’t wake up one fine morning and demand that they fly out to Australia to him, right?” “Nothing,” Rosenblit declared. “What’s important to him is the date of the wedding and the documents that affirm that. Everything is clearly stipulated here. If you ask me, it would be nice for the chasan and kallah to write him a nice thank-you letter, but that’s a side point. He is not demanding it.” “A thank-you letter is the most basic decency. That’s not what we’re talking about. The question is if he is going to want to be involved in the young couple’s life or intervene about matters like buying the apartment, for example.” “Look, Rabbi Potolsky.” The lawyer smiled. “I don’t provide my children with apartments. That’s not what we do in my circles. But if I were to do that, and someone who is ninety years old generously offered to help me with it, I wouldn’t mind for him

to get as involved as he wants! I mean, what can he ask already, at his age? That you send him pictures of the wedding? That you consult him before buying furniture? Speak to him before naming a child? And another point — and I’m not sure how proper it is for me to say this, but — for how many more years do you really think he’ll want to be involved?” Eliyahu smiled and wanted to say something, but the lawyer continued. “But none of this is relevant anyway, because he isn’t demanding anything except for an accounting of expenses for the apartment, clothing, the wedding, and the rest. Take this contract, show it to whomever you want, consult with them, and with your mechutanim, of course, and let me know what you decide.” “STOCKHAMMER, your father is looking for you.” “On the phone?” Peretz turned around to the row of public phones. How had his father been able to get through at this time of day, when all the bachurim were vying for a phone? “No, outside.” Nosson Berliner motioned with his hand to someplace behind him. “I offered to take him to our room so he could wait for you there, but I think he wants to speak to you privately.” He chuckled. “That makes sense, doesn’t it?” “I guess so,” Peretz said. He pressed his lips together. Since his first year in yeshivah, when his father had visited him once a week for the first six months, until he’d pleaded with his parents to stop, how often had his father come all the way from Petach Tikvah to see him in yeshivah? And at eleven at night?! A jumble of horrible thoughts, nightmarish stories about other chasanim that he had heard of, flashed through his mind — and all of those scenarios had begun with the father coming to the chassan’s yeshivah to deliver the news about a catastrophic turn of events… Without his noticing it, his footsteps picked up speed, and less than a minute later, he was outside on the Jerusalem street, looking left and right. Where was his father? There. And... oh, my, his mother had come along! She was standing at his father’s side, with her ever-present large brown pocketbook, curiously surveying the street. “How are you, Peretz?” His father clapped him on the shoulder, and his mother waved to him. No, they did not look like they were being crushed by a terrible burden that they had come to share with him. But they did look somewhat tense and preoccupied. “Baruch Hashem, I’m doing great… I got scared when I heard you were here,” he said honestly. “We should have visited you more these past few years, so that such a visit wouldn’t scare you,” his mother remarked, and then added a veiled barb: “Too bad you were embarrassed when Tatty used to

come…” He smiled. “I’m happy whenever you come,” he said. “Let’s sit down in a park somewhere,” his father requested. “Is there a place nearby, Peretz? Somewhere calm, quiet, where we can talk?” “Sure. But what do you want to talk to me about?” Peretz led his parents over to the next block. It was hard to call the space a park, and even harder to deem it quiet, but that’s what there was in the area. “I can take you someplace nicer,” he said as his parents sat down on the bench and his mother put down her bag. “But it’s farther. And I’m in too much suspense right now.” “Oy, why?” his mother exclaimed. “You don’t have to be in suspense. What do you think we’ve come to tell you?” “I don’t know.” Peretz sat down on the bench across from them. His father looked at his mother; she looked back at him. “Look, we’ve received a proposal and we’re deliberating whether or not to agree to it.” She was the one who began. “You know that I want you to have the nicest wedding in the world, right?” He must have smiled without realizing it when he heard the familiar refrain, because his father’s eyes narrowed. “Peretz,” he said in rebuke. “Yes, for years we have waited for this wedding. Mommy is entitled to want to plan and wait for the wedding of her youngest child and only son. Why are you laughing?” “Chas v’shalom!” Peretz shook his head. “I didn’t laugh. I just smiled, because we have been hearing about my wedding ever since I was a little boy. But I so appreciate everything you do for me, Tatty and Mommy.” “You’re a good boy,” his father said. “Yes,” his mother murmured. “And your kallah is also a good girl, a very good girl, but there’s no way I can agree for you to get married in a shul. There’s nothing to talk

about.” “Get married in a shul? We booked a hall, didn’t we?” “Yes, a cheap hall,” his father replied. “But they agreed to it. They are very special, these mechutanim, and you know that we didn’t have a lot of demands from them. We have experience with your three sisters, may their husbands be well. Thirteen years, and I’m still paying off the debts from Gitty’s wedding!” “So if we’ve already booked a hall, why are you suddenly anxious that they want us to get married in a shul?” “I wouldn’t call it anxious; it’s actually a very serious matter,” his father said. “We’ve just come from a meeting with the mechutanim.” “Nu?” “They want to push up the wedding and make it in four weeks, and we’re not sure there will be a hall available for then. Tzippy’s mother suggested a small shul hall in their neighborhood.” Then his mother interjected, “It would be one thing if I felt like their story is true, but something here...” She took a deep breath. “Something smells fishy to me.” “And not that we think they are liars, chas v’shalom,” his father made sure to note. “But maybe they don’t realize themselves that this whole fantastical story is just one big scam.” “Tell him,” his mother said. “He has daas Torah, our Peretz. Let’s see what he says.” And that’s how Peretz heard, for the first time, the unbelievable story of Alexander Korman, the son of Peretz and Tziporah Genendel, Hy”d. “It really does sound strange.” Peretz picked at a loose piece of paint on the bench. “That his parents had exactly the same names as us... very interesting. Tzippy’s parents are pretty reasonable people; they just accepted this so matter-offactly?” “Look, after everything is said and done, there is proof to all this,” his father said. “But what can I tell you... I still don’t fully buy it. They consulted Rav Gedaliah Weiss, they

showed him the contract that we are all supposed to sign, and he said that it’s kdai and that there doesn’t seem to be anything to lose. There’s no risk here.” “In my opinion,” his mother said, opening her bag and taking out a thermos and three paper cups, “getting us to speed things up and have the wedding in just a few weeks, and especially if that means that my son is going to get married in a shul…well, that sounds like a big risk to me.” “And I personally don’t believe that a person would pay such a large amount of money without expecting anything in return. I’m not sure what he will want in exchange, and under which words in the contract he is hiding it.” “In other words,” his mother said, “we don’t think so.” Peretz looked first at his father and then at his mother. “Fine,” he said. “If you don’t think so, then no. I really don’t understand these things.” “But do you think it’s right to reject such a good offer?” Bayla Stockhammer handed her son a cup of tea. “I mean, we’re talking about an apartment for you, a much better one than we and Tzippy’s parents can afford to give you.” “And it would be in a great location, too,” his father added, almost as an aside. “Sure, sure.” His mother filled a cup of tea for herself. “The problem is that I don’t believe the whole story. Avraham, I’m afraid that we’re going to get excited, and rush to marry them off in some miserable hall, and then we’ll be left with nothing to show for ourselves. I don’t know who this prankster is, but that’s what it sounds like to me, a prank. Drink, Peretz. Why aren’t you drinking? You, too, Avraham.” Father and son made a bracha and sipped from their cups. “If it would be possible to buy the apartment that he is promising even before the early wedding, I wouldn’t be so opposed,” Rabbi Stockhammer remarked. “After

all, Bayla, the 200,000 shekels that we promised is sitting on my head like a tractor. Don’t listen, Peretz. But I wouldn’t object if someone would help me a bit with this. Not tzedakah,” he added hastily when he saw his wife’s scowl. “But what we’re talking about is a good thing, in memory of Jewish souls...” “How do you want us to also buy an apartment in these few weeks?” She screwed the thermos cover back on. “I need to speak to the mechuteiniste. I want to tell her about an idea that just popped into my mind.” “What?” “That instead of looking for a shul hall because the regular halls are all taken, let her find a hall that is not so booked with weddings. There are such things — very fancy halls, like where Greenzweig’s granddaughter got married.” “That hall in Givatayim?” Her husband waved his hand. “Shoin, really. We’re going to bring in a special caterer and start schlepping all the guests to there?” “What’s wrong? We’ll offer transportation. And you’d be surprised to see how many people will come just to see a wedding in such a gorgeous place.” Peretz was quiet; he was wellraised enough to know not to interject into a discussion between his parents. “They won’t agree,” Avraham said. “Then I don’t agree to the whole idea of an early wedding, and goodbye to the whole thing.” “For a wedding, one night, we should lose the whole deal?” “Our Peretz is not a ‘deal.’” Bayla looked at her son’s pale face with a mixture of irritation and love. “And you also agreed that it’s a strange story.” “That’s right, but I also say we have to look into it seriously. And you think that way, too, Bayla,” he added softly, “because otherwise, we would not have come all the way out to Yerushalayim and kept Peretz up until a quarter to twelve at night, right?”

Its vestiges are all over town: abandoned train tracks peeking through the overgrowth in backyards in Monsey, Airmont and Spring Valley. A few feet of tracks can be found behind Motty’s Supermarket, and another stretch between Saddle River Road and Oak Glen Road. There’s the famous tunnel at Pascack Road and Lawrence Avenue over which the railroad had run; a bridge at Echo Ridge Road and Christmas Hill Road under which some remnants remain; and an entire stretch of track running under the bridge on Spook Rock Road in Tallman.

What was this rail that had gone through the very center of Monsey, leaving its traces all over town? What story do these rickety relics of the past tell? The Piermont Branch of the New York and Erie Railroad, which ran through our very town, not only provided transportation to the swampy, undeveloped area of Monsey of the 19th century; it’s also intertwined in its very establishment — and in its naming.

Map of Monsey 1876 By this time, 35 years after the Erie Railroad first stopped in Monsey, Monsey was developed only around the depot area. Shown here are present-day Main Street, Route 59, First Street, Second Street, Orchard Street, Grove Street, Secor Street, Saddle River Road, West Maple Avenue, Blauvelt Road, Route 306 and Maple Avenue. Notice where the train passes (Piermont Branch Erie R.R.) from the right, parallel to Route 59 (then called Nyack Turnpike), crossing Main Street, then Saddle River Road, and then going right through the glen. At this point the area around the train station was largely owned by Levi Sherwood, and the area was called Sherwood Square. Sherwood also owned a store (the building is still standing today) and was appointed station agent of the Monsey depot of the Piermont Branch of the Erie Railroad in 1857. We can understand how Secor Street, Requa Lane and Grove Street got their names. The Cemetery at corner West Maple Avenue and Saddle River is already on this map. Also standing is the historic home at corner Blauvelt Road and West Maple Avenue. Photo: The Palisades Free Library

A Need for Transportation The story of the railroad began in the 1830s, when a new era of modern railroads and the recent construction of the Erie Canal in upstate New York made New Yorkers take a good look at their transportation needs. Locally, efforts were being made to construct a corridor to connect West Nyack and Suffern that would cut right through the undeveloped territory of presentday Monsey and Spring Valley. A petition had been filed in 1813 and passed three years later, but both politically and technically, many difficulties were encountered until the Nyack Turnpike was completed in the 1830s. This first main thoroughfare that started out as a toll road until the state absorbed it into its budget is today known as Route 59 (not to be confused with today’s Old Nyack Turnpike). But residents needed even more than a local connection for them to be able to transport their

farm-produced and manufactured products to market beyond their borders.

The New York and Erie Railroad Eleazar Lord, the successful founder and president of Manhattan Fire Insurance Company, was living in Tappan Sloat (as the Sparkill and Piermont area was

Pieper’s General Store circa 1910 at the intersection of Erie Railroad and Main Street. This building was originally owned by Levi Sherwood. This very building, 22 Main Street, has in recent years housed RCDC and Kupath Ezra, and is now home to Furniture Village, Euphoria, Quality Dry Goods and Paper Source. The building at the right was a hotel, and was demolished in recent years. The structure up the street had once upon a time housed Klein’s pizza shop. then called) in an impressive hilltop home he’d built overlooking the Hudson River. In 1831, after his nephew rode a train in Charleston and shared his experience with his influential uncle, Lord began doing the preliminaries for actualizing his vision of constructing a railroad from New York City to Dunkirk, New York, on the shores of Lake Erie. However, reaching New York City would require railroad tracks crossing the state of New Jersey, something that was not an option, since the charter did not allow the line to travel out of New York. The solution? Piermont and the boats.

This tiny town of Piermont and its pier have quite a bit of historical significance. During World War II, the pier was an embarkation point for a half a million GI’s heading to the battlefield in Europe. And at war’s end, thousands of Italian and German POWs were held there until war’s end. Today the pier is a lovely fishing and hiking destination, and Piermont, with its marsh, boat rentals and Tallman Mountain State Park, is a charming village to visit.

Is This Your Chany? Esty wakes up in the morning, and, with eyes half closed, glances at her watch. 7:45 AM. Oh well, it’s a bit later than she would like, but that’s ok. If she hurries, she can still make her school bus. She quickly pulls on her uniform, gathers her hair into a pony, and skips downstairs for a quick breakfast. With a cheery “have a great day” to her mother, she grabs a snack and rushes outside. Next door, Chanie, her classmate, wakes up at the exact same time. 7:45 AM – oh no! How will she manage to catch the bus on time? With a worried glance at her watch, she carefully puts on her uniform, picking off the tiny pieces of lint she notices on her sweater. How should she wear her hair today – pony or bun? Standing in front of the mirror, she carefully brushes her hair into a neat pony, making sure that just the right amount of hairs stick out in front. She pauses at the top of the stairs and is relieved to hear the cheerful chatter at the breakfast table. No fights means a more relaxed day. Eating a quick breakfast, she selects a fruit from the refrigerator – much more mature than a snack bag – and rushes outside. On the bus, Esty joins a heated discussion regarding which summer camp to go to. Most of the girls seem to favor Camp Temima, but Esty thinks she’d like to try Camp Ruach, a new camp opening this summer. Chanie, listening to the argument, can’t understand why anyone would attend a new camp – tried and true is definitely the way to go. In class, Esty raises her hand confidently when her teacher asks a question. Chanie answers correctly but quietly when called upon. During recess, Esty asks to join the machanayim game that is being organized, while Chanie waits for someone to ask her whether she’d like to join. The day goes on predictably for both girls. Life does, actually. I’m sure you get the picture. Is “Chanie” your daughter? Is she your student? Hashem created each and every person with the unique personality and strengths that he or she needs to fulfill his or her role in this world. There are confident children and shy children, expressive children and reticent children. The trick is to recognize when these traits are normal and channel them in the right direction, or whether they’re unusual, extreme or worrisome. Common belief is that brighter children are more likely to succeed than weaker ones. But studies show that more important than a child’s IQ is his EQ, emotional quotient. A child may be very bright and not lead a happy and successful life due to other factors such as anxiety, perfectionism, or weak friendship skills, while the weaker child may really go far if he or she is confident, is a good friend, or has good communication and listening skills. We all know children, and even many adults, that are either bullies or are the victim of bullying, have flaring tempers, or otherwise have difficulty getting along with others. These issues affect people’s marriages, jobs, and every other area in their lives. The world is becoming a more and more difficult and complex place to navigate successfully. However, there are tools out there to help us. The Social Awareness Course, given by Mrs. Rivky Katz, is a two – day comprehensive and interactive workshop geared to help parents, teachers, principals, special educators, seminary girls, and anyone wishing to discover the key to help children lead happy and productive lives. Due to popular demand, this course will now be given in Lakewood in addition to the regular Monsey venue. Course dates are: Monsey: July 8-9 • Lakewood: July 15-16 Please call 845-422-3922 or email us at multisensorycourse@gmail.com for more information or to reserve a space. Slots are limited. Piermont and the Pier The Hudson River had recently been recognized as a major artery for transportation, and so the railroad masterminds designated Piermont, with its access to the Hudson and proximity to New York City by boat, as the endpoint of the New York and Erie Railroad. From there, passengers and cargo could take a ferry to the city. This strategic location would connect upstate New York and New York City without railroad tracks built out of New York State. In 1838, the Piermont Pier was extended to its impressive 4,000 feet to accommodate the trains. Tracks were laid across the entire mile of the pier, and at the river extremity it was built 300 feet wide to accommodate the numerous docks needed for the company’s boats upon which scores of merchandise were loaded. The picturesque village of Piermont, with its steep heights, gardens and cedar groves on one side; a sloped hillside on the other side; and its great pier jutting out into the river, was named so by Eleazar Lord in 1839 for its “pier” and its “mounts,” especially the one upon which Lord’s castle-like home stood.

A closer-up view of the station and the surrounding area

Construction Over the next few years, routes were surveyed, planned and finally accepted. Before the actual building began, people at either end of the proposed line insisted construction begin at their end, since they claimed that if it were to start some 450 miles away, it would take a lifetime until the trains would service their area. Officials chose the half-way point, and in 1835, workers broke ground at Deposit, New York (about an hour northwest of Fallsburg). Much of what they were building through was wild, wooded, uninhabited land. Costs were initially estimated at $6 million dollars (and this was the 1830s!), but ended up reaching more than $20 million. By 1841, the railway was open from Piermont until Goshen.

Monsey Is Born In 1840, the president of the Erie Railroad, Eleazar Lord, purchased eight and a half acres of land in what is now Monsey, with the intention of making a water station at that location. The locale was wet and swampy with tangled morass. The company drained the area and put up a shanty

quite close to the Indian encampment, the glen, and built a platform where passengers could stand while waiting for the train. The station, and thus the surrounding area, was named Monsey, a variant of Munsee, the name of a chief of the Lenape Native Americans who inhabited that area, and Rockland County in general. The Monsey station was right where Horizon Court currently is. Is it any wonder that Main Street is right there? And that explains First Street and Second Street, too.

Next Stop: Spring Valley At first, Spring Valley was just a crossing at a farm

The location that is now the Monsey Glen was once an Indian encampment. Over the years, numerous artifacts have been found, and some remnants of shelters are still there.

road where the railroad was built, with no trains stopping there. Once the Piermont Branch was up and running in 1841, however, the farmers in the area protested that trains should stop in Spring Valley so they can more conveniently ship their merchandise. After petitioning, the company said that if the farmers were to build a depot, the freight trains would stop there too. The farmers went ahead and built a board shanty on a 10 by 11 platform. The shanty was at first used as a shop, but then the railroad

agreed to stop there, naming the station Pascac, after its stream. After some time, a prominent farmer, Springsteel, inspired by a large spring in Valley Pond, named the place Spring Valley. A board with the name on it was nailed to a tree stump near the depot, and Spring Valley was born.

The First Ride In May of 1851, the ceremonious inaugural journey of the complete 447 miles of the Erie Railroad, then the longest railroad in the world, traveled the full length from Piermont to Dunkirk. President Millard Fillmore and Daniel Webster, as well as many other high-ranking politicians, boarded the two lavishly decorated trains for this historical journey of the first major railroad in the United States. At every station New Yorkers stood agog, waving to the dignitaries on this celebrated railway trip. Even years later there was talk of Secretary of State Daniel Webster traveling through Spring Valley on his way from Piermont to Dunkirk while sitting in a rocking chair fastened to an open flatcar of the Erie Railroad.

The conductor of the first train was a 300-pound man, Henry Ayres, who had to squeeze through the doors of the train to get inside.

A Tour Around Monsey’s Tracks The last train rode in the ‘70s but there are still traces all over… Are there still remnants of the tracks in your vicinity? It takes a few years and a few kids to learn how to pack light. When you’re a newlywed going away for Shabbos, there is just so much stuff to take along. First all three sheitels, freshly pinned on the head and encased in bulky black boxes — because you can’t leave those behind! Then the two shtreimels — you must have the rain shtreimel in case it rains. And there was no way to leave without attire for every weather: rain gear in the event that the clouds part, sweaters for when the winds decide to blow, sunscreen lotion for when the sun chooses to shine, and several changes of clothes, for when I would get bored of my clothing. Now, in contrast, when I travel with my family of four kids, in my hands I clutch one (!) valise. And yes, one shtreimel and one sheitel — perched on our heads — miraculously suffice! But back then was different. We were in shanah rishonah. Glowing. Barely managing life, because we were so, so busy with… who knows what? But everyone knows that the busiest people are the shanah rishonah couples. And then came the big wedding in Montreal. This time we were not going away for a Shabbos. We were going away for a full week! My brother-in-law was getting married, and we needed wedding clothes, Shabbos clothes, weekday clothes and sheva brachos clothes. Who knew that two people could wear so many things? But still, the night before we left, standing over the open suitcases strewn all over the room, I worried.

“Do you think I’ll have enough to wear?” I asked my husband, the area behind me resembling the baggage claim in JFK airport. My husband, looking around the room with even more worry in his eyes, nodded. “I think so.” We were traveling with Amtrak, the ideal traveling option for a couple. It came along with scenic views, extra legroom and a reasonable price tag. And in those days, the baggage count had no limit! The difficulty lay in the fact that my husband and I would have to catch a bus to Manhattan at 6 a.m. on the following morning, and get from the drop-off point to Penn Station, where we would then catch the Amtrak to Montreal. After a few hours of frenzied packing, we zipped our suitcases closed, taped our boxes, and then headed to bed for the two hours of shut-eye we had left. We were already drifting off to sleep when I remembered — “Food!” I sat up. “We’ll starve if we don’t have breakfast tomorrow morning!” We’d be meeting up with family on the train, and they were bringing food, but there would be very many hours until then. How did I forget such an important thing? My husband bolted upright. “You’re right. We need food!” But what would we eat? The local groceries were closed, we had no car to take us to the 24-hour supermarkets, and the pantry had intentionally not been refilled because, after

all, we’d be out of the house for a week! My husband rubbed his eyes, fumbled into his slippers and made his way to the kitchen. From under my blanket I heard him opening and closing kitchen cabinets. Open. Shut. Open. Shut. Then he got lucky. “I found some frank buns!” he called. “And we have a can of salmon! I’m going to make sandwiches.” His excitement mirrored the joy he expresses when locating the last of the ten crumbs during bedikas chametz. Too exhausted to talk or care about the mess my husband was sure to create, I mumbled something and fell into an uneasy slumber. Morning dawned very soon after that. Too soon. And with it dawned the reality that all the luggage that occupied our entire dining room floor needed to come along with us to the bus stop. We were running extremely late. Two groggy, sleepdeprived humans made their way outside in silence. (We don’t do mornings. Oy, how we don’t do mornings.) Our arms were overflowing with garment bags, boxes and suitcases, and then my husband ran inside one more time to retrieve his culinary creations from the refrigerator: salmon in frankfurter buns. If not for the bus being ten minutes late, we would never have made it on time. The bus ride was uneventful. Oddly, the salmon sandwiches were rather tasty, considering, and I enjoyed the quiet, relieved that the most hectic part of the journey was behind us. Fortunately, we managed to get off the bus with enough time to leisurely catch a taxi, and then we noticed a yellow cab waiting right there! It was as if Heaven-sent. We flagged it down, and a middle-aged driver, who seemed unusually rested for the hour, rolled down his window. He surveyed the scene, looking at the vast collection of suitcases, and then glanced back into his tiny car. Then he looked at the suitcases again and then back at us. It was a painful decision for him to make. “Get in!” he said at last. “We’ll make room.”

146 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 19, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Grateful that he’d agreed to take on the challenge, we got to work. Maneuvering all those bags was no easy feat. It was like playing Tetris, only this time it was hands-on. We piled bag on top of bag, package on top of package, and tried to hold it all down while we piled some more bags on top. “What,” I huffed, lifting a bulging garment bag, “are in these bags? Rocks?” “If I remember correctly,” my husband couldn’t resist to say, “it was my wife who did the packing.” But to his credit, he was smirking almost kindly. Finally, with every inch filled to capacity, we slammed the trunk closed. “We’re done!” My husband wiped his forehead with a tissue, soaking right through it. “Let’s get going!” Then I noticed a lonely piece of luggage waiting on the ground. “What’s with this last one over here?” I asked tentatively, afraid to break the euphoria in the air. My husband sighed. “You must be kidding. This will never fit.” True to his prediction, the suitcase stubbornly refused to fit into the stuffed trunk. The driver, a bemused expression on his face, was watching the drama unfold. “Here, we’ll tie this to the roof of the car,” he said. In his hand he was waving a rope, as if to lasso the suitcase, and sure enough, he managed to mount that last black Samsonite onto the roof of the car. Finally, we sat into the taxi and my husband closed the door. Slumping back into the seats, we heaved a tremendous sigh of relief that contained a full 24 hours’ worth of stress. Then the driver turned around to face us. “So where are we headed to?” I glanced at my watch anxiously. Our train would be leaving in fifteen minutes. “We need to get to Penn Station. How long will it take to get there?” “You want Penn Station?” The driver said those words ever so slowly. Then he turned around and pointed out the passenger window to an imposing building, where people were entering and exiting at lightning speed. “That’s it,” he said. “That’s Penn Station — right there, right outside your door.”

There are several requisites for our (and probably most) family getaways: Minyan in close proximity. Kidfriendly attractions. Kosher food a major plus. Pleasing and spotless accommodations (if it’s not nicer than home, I’ll just stay here). Not too close. And not too far. So, is it any surprise that in the past four years we’ve been to Lancaster three times? Our fourth destination over the last few years was New Hampshire, a trip I look forward to taking again in the near future, but even as I say it, I’m thinking “How will we manage the hours and hours of travel, kids struggling against their seatbelts, driver fighting to keep his eyes open?” This year, perhaps we will take the Amtrak to our area of choice, so that the getting there can be at least half of the fun. TAKING THE AMTRAK is not a way to save money on travel (unless you manage to snag the saver tickets detailed below), but it’s a great option for those who don’t drive, don’t own a car, don’t want to drive long distances, or simply want to enjoy the journey in peace. The seats are comfortable with plenty of legroom — a lot roomier than your typical airplane — and with routes all across the United States, there are so many destinations Amtrak can take you to. For kids, the ride is a thrill — less confinement, more room and comfort — and oh, the novelty! For those who don’t mind spending several times the price, there are even roomettes and bedrooms available so you can slumber peacefully while traveling long distances. And long distances you can go, because on the tracks of Amtrak, you can aim as far as Vancouver. The one place where you can catch every one of these Amtrak trains directly is at Penn Station in New York City. However, some routes pass closer stations, too, so you can save on some travel time (and traffic) both to the station and on the train ride. The chart below specifies whether or not the train passes another station a bit closer than Manhattan. Also included are some locations that need a connecting bus to a specific destination.

RAILROADS IN THE U.S. Interestingly, it was the American railroads that The second half of the nineteenth century saw tremendous railway growth in the United States, first divided the country into four time zones. It as railroad construction took the nation by storm. seems that figuring out a schedule for a route that In 1862, President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railtraversed miles upon miles of land made this imway Act, which provided the federal government plementation necessary, though the setup didn’t with the means to complete the first transcontibecome official until the 1918 Standard Time Act. nental railroad. Only a few years later, in May of 1869, the railroad was completed as the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads met up in Utah, connecting the East and West Coasts for the very first time. Suddenly, people were able to cross the nation in just days, instead of spending long weeks in travel.

Just to prove how air travel impacted the railway systems of the world, compare the less than 170,000 miles of railways that the United States has today, to the 254,000 miles (or more) the country boasted in 1916!

The world’s fastest commercial train is the Shanghai Transrapid, or Shanghai Maglev (magnetic levitation) Train, which is a highspeed electric train that connects the Shanghai Pudong International Airport to another station from where passengers can then continue to the city center. Its normal operating speed is 268 mph, and it can complete a trip of over 18.5 miles in just 7 minutes and 20 seconds.

The train station with the most platforms is Grand Central Station in New York City, which boasts 28 actual platforms that support 44 platform numbers.

The longest train route in the world is operated by the Korean State Railway. It begins in Moscow, Russia, and after a voyage that takes a whopping 206 hours, ends in Pyongyang, North Korea. In the United States, the longest train ride takes passengers from Chicago to Los Angeles. This journey takes upward of 65 hours!

The longest stretch of perfectly straight railway tracks belongs to the Trans-Australian Railway, which crosses from South Australia to Western Australia. This stretch covers 297 miles of perfectly straight ground.

The longest passenger train in operation, which is another proud Aussie, is named The Ghan. The Ghan’s average length is over 2,500 feet long, but for a few weeks in 2016 it was put into service with 44 cars and two locomotives, and at that point it measured a neat 3,600 feet (or 0.7 mile) long!

ODD TRAIN CROSSINGS At the Gisborne Airport in New Zealand, not only do planes need to be in contact with air traffic controllers, but the trains do too! Since the track of the local train line neatly cuts through the airport’s runway, each passing train needs to get permission before crossing.

Chongqing in China is home to very, very many people. And very, very many buildings. And sometimes, building infrastructure in such an area can be complicated, especially when the city’s topography, comprised of many hills, mountains and valleys, is super unlevel. That’s why this Chongqing’s monorails actually goes… through a building.

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is well known for its old architecture and narrow Old Quarter streets. And when train tracks are planted right in the middle of those streets, then items on display just may very well get crushed…

However, when one’s mood and energy levels are down, it becomes all but impossible to achieve any goals. THE DOLDRUMS OF DEPRESSION What is depression? Is it a feeling of sadness? Is it a low mood? Well, yes and no. All normal people experience fluctuations in moods but depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in formerly enjoyable activities. It affects how a person feels, thinks and behaves and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. Depression is more than a bout of the blues; it is a condition. Some people experience a one-time or temporary bout of depression, but often people have a predisposition towards depression and will go through several episodes of symptoms. It is important to know, though, that depression is a treatable condition. Enter MasterMind. MASTER YOUR MIND MasterMind addresses the root causes of depression. It is a supplement that reduces systemic markers for inflammation and supports energy production at the cellular level. MasterMind is comprised of potent ingredients, combined to create a powerhouse of possibility. MasterMind can play a critical role in balancing chemicals in the brain and help lift a person out of depression and begin the road to recovery.

“It is important to know, though, that depression is a treatable condition.” SO, WHO IS THE MASTER? YOU are! You can take the initiative to regain control of your mind and your thoughts. By taking the first step toward healing and recovery, you truly become master of your destiny. Taking a supplement such as MasterMind is a great way to start your journey. Because of its superior sourcing, bioavailability and brain-building ingredients, MasterMind can be your key to a glorious future.

MIND & SPIRIT

MasterMind draws on the potency of: B Vitamins The pre-activated B-Vitamins methyl B-12, active folate, and active B-6 have long been known for their brainbalancing abilities. These abilities are enhanced in MasterMind because the vitamins are obtained from pure sources and are bioavailable for optimal absorption. DMAE & GABA DMAE helps produce acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter. DMAE plays a key role in brain functions like learning and memory, and in general boosts brain health. GABA can help relieve anxiety, improve mood and increase a sense of well-being. Ashwagandha Leaf and Root Extract Derived from the ashwagandha herb, it has many health benefits including reducing the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. It may also help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, control inflammation and boost brain function. 5-HTP 5-HTP is a byproduct of L-tryptophan and can be produced from the Griffonia simplicifolia plant. It is often used to treat anxiety and depression, as well as other conditions through building up serotonin levels. Serotonin is a brain hormone that affects sleep, appetite, perception of temperature and sensation of pain. Affron® Also included is affron®, a standardized extract from the saffron plant. It is a bioactive compound that can help with relaxation, maintaining a positive mood and achievement of mental and physical balance.
