(Re: Excursions, Issue 211) After reading the feature on Washington, D.C., in your Excursions section, I want to make your readers aware that the International Spy Museum is an inappropriate place to visit. Our school took us to the museum as part of our graduation trip, and there were immodest displays everywhere. We immediately left the place, but not before taking in sights that we shouldn’t have. Now I want to ensure that other frum families do not innocently wander in there like we did. As an aside, thank you for your wonderful Excursions. We took a trip to New Hampshire last year and used your guide to plan our visits to local attractions and sightseeing destinations. A Reader
SENSITIVITY CAN BE TAUGHT I really enjoy reading your informative and practical articles every week. Being that I know that so many read The Monsey View, I would appreciate if you can publicize my letter so that it can hopefully impact the Monsey community in a positive way. I am the mother of a child who is developmentally delayed in many areas. He really has to work very hard to use his limited capabilities

to grow as much as he can. Being that he uses regular transportation to get to cheder every day, he is constantly ridiculed, bullied and downgraded by the boys on the bus. Hardly a day goes by without having him come home in tears after being called derogatory names because he has so many therapists throughout the day. I don’t think I need to elaborate how painful that is for him and for me as a parent. I have spoken to many parents who also have children with “issues,” and their children have been receiving similar treatment as well. I believe that Yidden are rachmanim and that the boys are not doing this because they are mean, but rather because they are just not educated! I understand that it’s hard to control bullying on the bus and that bullying shouldn’t be allowed among “regular” kids either. However, if mothers would explain to their children the severity of bullying kids — especially those who are different, struggling, etc. — they would understand the devastating ramifications of their actions and that would stop them from lashing out! Mothers, please
explain to your kids that these children did not choose their mental capabilities, but they were created like that by Hashem. Tell them that these children work a thousand times harder to learn anything, and that they struggle with low self-esteem as is. They resent being different, and it’s therefore that much more crushing to be called offensive names! Mothers, please teach your children to be sensitive and caring individuals. Thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to bring awareness to this important matter. A Pained Mother

Please be advised that this is the official notification for... You may contact us at... and reference file number... You have officially been notified.” This is a scam. No process server (a person employed to serve a person with a court summons or legal documents) leaves messages! They just serve the papers. The call is an attempt to scare you into paying them a “settlement.” The voice may sound intimidating, but these are simply savvy overseas scammers who have professional voice actors reading a script for them. The calls are made via computer to tens of thousands of people daily. You don’t owe anything to anyone, and no one will pay you a visit. The only official and legal means for a party to a suit to interact with an individual is through written form, be it in or out of court. There are already millions of recordings of these calls from throughout the U.S., and the law enforcement agencies have enough material to pursue those who are perpetrating it. It’s only a matter of time. Telephone companies are also getting smarter when it comes to these scams and hope to have a way to block them in the near future. Meanwhile, just ignore the caller and hang up. And don’t fall for any phone call demanding you to do anything. Ever. If a caller is threatening you, you can call the NY State Attorney General Helpline: 1-800-771-7755. A Concerned Monsey Resident
Should I be Concerned? Mothers’ worries addressed by Hamaspik’s OPWDD Evaluator Dr. Gampel
My Concern: Everyone in the family walks on eggshells around Shloimy. He throws the nastiest tantrums ever! He will be turning eight years old next month, and I thought he would’ve outgrown it by now. I did notice that his behavior gets worse on very hectic days, like on a yom tov or when we travel.
Concern or No Concern? Shloimy has effectively gained control over the entire family with his tantrums. Likely even when you try to ignore or fight him, he is willing to escalate the situation until it becomes too much to handle. How does he behave in school? How does he get along with classmates? These two questions are very important, because it lets you know if the problem is situational ( that is when he is at home or with family) or more general to all places. If it’s only with the family, then we are dealing with a child who has the ability to control himself when necessary but has learned to manipulate the home situation. Guidance in setting up a behavioral program with reinforcers and costs for noncompliance will likely work. If the problem is now occurring in all situations, then the difficulty is likely one related to Shloimy. Are there language issues that make it difficult to follow social conversation that tends to be nonliteral? Are there attention issues? Does Shloimy recognize that what he is doing is inappropriate? Shloimy may be having school learning difficulties, but they have not yet emerged. Until the fourth grade, learning is based on memory and not analysis, which means Shloimy can therefore do well through the use of his memory. Even though he is doing well, he realizes that he is just hanging on. As school becomes more difficult, there may be a greater level of acting out at home due to frustration in school. If that is so, an evaluation would be highly recommended. To learn more about evaluations and services available to mainstream children call: 845-503-0200 Ezra S. Gampel, Ph.D., is a psychologist who works with a wide variety of populations. He specializes in evaluating and treating children and adolescents. He is a professor of psychology at Touro College.

Parshas
Eikev By: Malka Schneps
It says in this week’s parsha, “And He afflicted you with hunger, and then fed you with mann, which you did not know, nor did your forefathers know, so that He would make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but rather by what comes forth from the mouth of Hashem does man live” (Devarim 8:3). Whether it is an affliction of hunger, or an abundance of food received with no work on our part — everything we experience in life is from Hashem. Reb Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, explains that there are many benefits gained by a person who believes that everything comes from Hashem. Reb Biderman lists ten specific benefits: Benefit 1: Freedom From Worry
A person who believes that everything is from Hashem is freed from worries. If a person believes that he is responsible for his own success in life, or that his success is the result of luck, then he will be worried about whether he can succeed, or whether he will be lucky. Benefit 2: Humility
A person who knows that everything that happens is by the word of Hashem will be humble. If a person is very suc-

cessful in business, he might take credit for his success and become haughty, while a person who fails in business might blame himself and become depressed. But the person who knows that his parnassah comes from Hashem will be humble.
that Hashem is the source of their sustenance will have kavanah in bentching, which then leads to parnassah, as it is written, “Whoever is careful with Birchas Hamazon will have parnassah b’kavod his entire life” (Sefer HaChinuch, Mitzvah 430).
Benefit 3: Simcha
Benefit 6: Feeling Satisfied
If a person believes that his portion in life was given to him by Hashem and is exactly right for him, then he will be satisfied with that portion. He will then attain simcha. Chazal say, “Who is wealthy, someone who is happy with his portion” (Avos 4:1). A person will be happy with his portion if he realizes that it comes from Hashem.
If a person internalizes the fact that everything is from Hashem, then he will not feel that Hashem “owes” him more. Knowing that Hashem decrees everything a person should have and not have, and in exactly what measure, can help a person to feel satisfied that what he has is exactly right for him.
Benefit 4: Fulfilling a Mitzvas Asei According to Sefer Hamitzvos Hagadol, believing that everything is for the good is one of the 613 mitzvos of the Torah. A person who is aware that everything is from Hashem will therefore understand that everything that happens is for the good.
Benefit 7: Success
Benefit 5: Kavanah in Bentching If everything comes from Hashem, then certainly the bread we eat comes from Hashem. A person who realizes
All of our endeavors in life require siyata d’Shmaya in order to be successful. Keeping in mind that everything is from Hashem is a segulah for success. Benefit 8: Remembering Hashem The Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh explains that if a person knows that Hashem gave him everything that he has, then he will always be thinking about Hashem. Consequently, he will always be aware of Hashem’s hashgacha pratis in his life.
Benefit 9: Protection From the Yetzer Hara The yetzer hara first tries to get a person to forget the good he receives from Hashem, then to forget Hashem Himself, and finally to succumb to avodah zara, chalilah. The Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh writes that if a person pays attention to the good that he has and knows that it is from Hashem, which leads him to constantly recognize Hashem and Hashem’s hashgacha over him, then he will have protection from the yetzer hara. Benefit 10: Dveikus to Hashem
This week’s parsha also includes the mitzvah of cleaving to Hashem (Devarim 11:22). The Ramban explains that dveikus means constantly remembering Hashem and His love, even when traveling, going to sleep and waking up. The Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh explains that remembering and reflecting on the fact that everything is from Hashem will lead a person to think about Hashem constantly, and his heart and mind will then cleave to Hashem. As Reb Biderman has explained, the benefits of knowing that everything comes from Hashem range from feelings of joy and satisfaction to protection from the yetzer hara and dveikus to Hashem. By knowing that everything is from Hashem and by seeing Hashem’s hand in every aspect of our lives, may we all come to experience the closeness to Hashem for which we yearn.

Gotcha! School Bus–Mounted Cameras to Capture Illegally Passing Drivers With the opening of the new school year just days away, Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation that will allow school districts to install cameras on the movable stop arm that extends when a school bus’s red lights are flashing, giving them the chance to catch law-breakers in the act. The law takes effect the first week in September, coinciding with the time that most children will be headed back to class. School districts that choose to install the stop arm cameras would be able to capture images of every car that illegally passes the bus. "No parent should ever have to worry that their child's bus ride to and from school is anything other than safe and easy," said Cuomo. "By signing this measure into law, we are providing school districts the tools they need to hold reckless drivers accountable and advancing New York State's bold initiatives to keep our school children safe." It is unclear at this time if school districts in our area will be installing the cameras. Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, who represents the 97th Assembly District, which includes Suffern, was one of several co-sponsors on an Assembly version of the bill. CBS News reported that drivers caught passing a
stopped bus could face fines of $250 for a first offense, with subsequently higher penalties for repeat offenders. Monies collected from the fines would be split between local school districts and municipalities. Approximately 1.5 million school children ride buses to and from school every day in New York. According to state transportation officials, tens of thousands of motorists illegally pass stopped school buses every day. "We are committed to ensuring the safety of our students getting to and from school," said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. "This legislation will allow for the installation of cameras on school buses to crack down on drivers who illegally pass them on the road, putting young people's lives in danger. The effort builds on our other progressive policies to protect students and all New Yorkers from harm." The legislation was heartily applauded by the state teacher’s union. “It is our sincere hope that school districts will work quickly to begin installing stop-arm cameras so we can better hold accountable those who show blatant disregard for our kids,” said Andy Pallotta, president of New York State United Teachers.
Closing Soon Near You? Walgreens, a long-time community fixture for those looking to fill prescriptions, print pictures and pick up other odds and ends, has announced plans to close 200 stores in the United States, a cost-cutting move that the company hopes will result in $1.5 billion in savings. Walgreens has three stores in the greater Monsey area located on Route 59 at Airmont Road in Suffern, Route 59 at Route 45 in Spring Valley and on Calvary Drive in New City. According to CNBC reports, Walgreens has yet to announce which of its 10,000 stores will be eliminated, but in a statement released to the public, the company said that any closures should result in “minimal disruption to customers and patients.” Please note that the fax number for PEARLS featured last week was incorrect. Walgreens previously closed 200 stores in 2015. The company acquired nearly 2,000 Rite Aid locations in 2018, closing 631 of those stores. Another 119 Rite Aid stores are also scheduled to be closed.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Recap: Tzippy’s wedding invitation creates waves as the recipients wonder why the wedding will be held earlier than scheduled, and in a school gym. Eliyahu Potolsky returns the money he’d borrowed for the wedding, with a brief explanation to the gemach director about the grant he’d received. He also gives ma’aser from the money. “Shaina?” It was Nechama Kagan, Shaina’s cousin from Petach Tikvah. As principal of Bais Yaakov Zichron Elchanan, Shaina Rosen was a busy woman, and her cousin had caught her just as she was about to leave her office. “Hi, Nechama, how are you?” “Baruch Hashem, nothing special here. Tell me, we got a very strange invitation today from friends on the block... What’s the story with Stockhammer and Potolsky? Bais Yaakov Zichron Elchanan is your school, isn’t it? Since when do people make weddings in your gym?” “It’s really just a one-time thing.” “Is it true that Stockhammer’s son, the chasan, is sick? And he’s supposed to have surgery in a month, so they’re making the wedding early?” Shaina switched off the light in the office. “I haven’t heard that,” she said cautiously. “So what did they tell you?” “That they got money from a special fund if they would make the wedding on Rosh Chodesh Teves, and being that all the regular halls were already taken, they were looking for an alternative that could work.” “Strange. Maybe this money is just an excuse to cover up the truth... I heard that they
asked a rav, and he told them not to drop the shidduch. A school gym as a wedding hall...? Who called you about it?” “Mrs. Stockhammer herself. From what I understand, she’s the one dealing with all the details of the wedding: the band, the photographer and all that.” “Interesting... And are you even allowed to rent out the gym in the first place? It probably belongs to the municipality, no?” “We really aren’t allowed to.” “And so?” “We gave it to them to use for free. They promised to take care of the place, and it’s during Chanukah vacation anyway, so if it won’t hurt the school. And if the chasan’s and kallah’s families can be helped financially because of it — well, why shouldn’t we do this chesed?” “Are they bringing in a caterer, or organizing the food themselves?” Nechama could not imagine Bayla Stockhammer — or her daughters, for that matter — standing and cooking in such quantities, and then transporting all the food to the hall — or rather, school. But she knew that many people were in dire financial situations these days. And if the rumors about the chasan were true, chalilah... Who knew what people

“Eliyahu?” Eliyahu didn’t like talking on his cell phone in the street, but when Yocheved, his oldest sister, called in, he knew that he had little choice in the matter. So he stepped off the sidewalk into a small park that he was just passing. At this evening hour, the park was deserted. “What’s doing, Yocheved?” “Baruch Hashem, everything is wonderful. How are you? How is little Shmuel?” Eliyahu nodded absently, and a moment later remembered to say, “Baruch Hashem, excellent.” When had he last seen his grandchild? Yaakov and Miri hadn’t come for three Shabbosos already; Elisheva was just so overwhelmed and tired. And she was hardly home during the week, so he didn’t think Miri came by very often then either. In any case, going out with a baby in the winter probably wasn’t such a good idea. “Does he look like Tatty, zichrono l’vrachah?” “I think so.” “Actually, at the bris I thought he looked very much like Yaakov’s side of the family,” Yocheved remarked. “What do I know of these things?” her brother replied. In reality, the baby did not look much like their father at all. In his opinion, he didn’t look much like anyone in particular; he was just a baby! “I’m not very good at figuring out whom babies look like.” Yocheved chuckled.

Hickenlooper Drops Out BACKGROUND: Former Governor of Colorado John Hickenlooper became the first member of the crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls to drop out of the presidential primary race. Hickenlooper struggled to gain traction and had difficulty polling above 1 percent. Hickenlooper, a successful self-made entrepreneur, billed himself as a centrist with a cando attitude and a proven track record of effective governance. However, he was unable to achieve a break-
120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 21, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
out moment in any of the debates and failed to attract broad support. At the time of the withdrawal of his candidacy, a majority of Democrats polled still had no opinion of him. Ultimately, he was eclipsed by candidates with better name recognition such as Joe Biden. Hickenlooper also failed to rally the Democratic base to his centrist approach of policy-making. In an era where extreme and radical policy proposals get all the attention, his ideas often came across as unexciting and dull. WHY IT MATTERS: Hickenlooper’s withdrawal from
the presidential race frees him to seek the Democratic
nomination for the 2020 Colorado Senate race. Republican incumbent Cory Gardner is perceived as vulnerable, and Hickenlooper, a former governor of Colorado, remains extremely popular in his state. Reportedly Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer had strongly encouraged Hickenlooper to drop out of the presidential race and pursue the Senate seat instead. Schumer and the Democrats have their sights on regaining the Senate majority in 2020. Currently, the Republicans have 53 seats giving them a three-seat majority. To gain control of the Senate, the Democrats must flip three or four seats, depending on who occupies the White House in 2020. Many Democrats feel that Hickenlooper may provide the ticket to a Democratic Senate majority.
Warren Surges in Polls BACKGROUND: Senator Elizabeth Warren continues to surge in Democratic presidential primary polling. Recent polling averages show Joe Biden polling at 31 percent, Elizabeth Warren at 20 percent, Bernie Sanders at 10 percent and Kamela Harris at 8 percent. Importantly, Warren also holds a slight advantage over Sanders and Harris in the latest surveys in Iowa. These polls continue to represent a trend of Warren pulling ahead of the rest of the field of progressive candidates. WHY IT MATTERS: To date, Joe Biden has been able
to take advantage of the fact that the crowded Democratic primary field consists of many progressive candidates. He has styled himself as a centrist and has attracted centrist support, while progressives have split their support among many candidates, but primarily Sanders, Warren and Harris. However, if Warren continues to break away from the pack, she will come to be perceived as the only viable progressive candidate that is capable of winning the nomination. This may result in liberal voters coalescing around her candidacy, which would represent a real threat to Biden and would give her a clear shot at securing the nomination.
States Sue to Block DHS Public Charge Rule BACKGROUND: Seventeen states plus the District of Columbia have sued to block the Trump administration’s new public charge regulation. The law allows the Department of Homeland Security to take into account an immigrant’s usage of public services, such as welfare and Medicaid, when determining their eligibility for a green card or visa. The current law allows the government to reject applications for those who are “primarily dependent on the government for subsistence.” However, the Trump administrations want to broaden the definition of what is considered “subsistence” to include section 8 housing benefits, food stamps and other government programs. Additionally, the administration is seeking to change the rule to allow the government to reject the applications of those with a high probability of receiving government assistance due to their inability to establish that they have sufficient financial resources. The new regulation was proposed on August 14 and is set to go into effect 60 days later, on October 14, 2019. WHY IT MATTERS: The Trump administration believes that the new regulation will help overhaul the current immigration system. It will help prioritize immigration of those who are most likely to be of economic benefit to the United States and decrease immigration that is likely to be a drag on society. The states suing to block the new regulation argue that it is illegal. They believe that it will unfairly favor the rich. Additionally, they feel that it is at odds with the famous lodestar of American immigration, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,” which is inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Last, there is a concern that out of fear of jeopardizing their applications, immigrants awaiting a green card or visa application may not avail themselves of needed government help, thereby putting themselves and their children at risk of malnutrition or inadequate medical care.

Few things say summer more than sun-kissed juicy peaches with their enticing fragrance. When I was a kid growing up in Monsey, Mr. Nappy would roll into town and sell his produce off the back of his large white truck. The peaches seldom made it to a pot as they were enjoyed much too quickly in their fresh, mouthwatering state. This week, preserve summer memories with these peach delicacies. To avoid being stuck with starchy peaches, always select peaches with a whiff of fragrance. If a peach doesn’t smell like a peach, chances are it never will. Iced Tea
Iced Tea This simple iced tea pairs beautifully with a good book and comfy chair. Enjoy the last wisps of outdoors before summer fades away. (Bring a fork with you — the peaches are yum!)
INGREDIENTS 3 cups spring water 2–3 Gefen tea bags (regular) 3 ripe peaches, sliced 3–4 T. sugar or simple syrup
DIRECTIONS 1. Place all ingredients in a 4-quart Ball jar and allow to steep overnight. If using regular sugar, dissolve in boiling water. 2. Remove tea bags when desired intensity of flavor is obtained.

Peach Halves I always wondered why canned peach halves were firm, flavorful and the perfect texture while mine consisted of overcooked mush. This method, which calls for minimal cooking time, is the secret to a fantastic compote.
INGREDIENTS 30 peaches 8 cups boiling water 1¼ cups sugar
DIRECTIONS 1. Peel peaches if desired. Cut in half and carefully remove pit. 2. Place in an 8-quart pot. Add sugar and boiling water. Bring to a boil. Lower the flame and cook for an additional 4–5 minutes. 3. To preserve compote, ladle into Ball jars while boiling hot and seal tightly. Do not tamper with lid for 12 hours, as it will interfere with the canning process.
Peach Pie Peach pie is a summer specialty. Prepare some extra and freeze raw for a hot-out-of-the-oven yom tov treat. I used a store-bought pie shell — you can substitute with any pie crust.
INGREDIENTS 1 Gefen frozen deep-dish pie crust
STREUSEL ½ cup quick-cooking oats ⅓ cup flour ¼ cup light brown sugar ¼ tsp. cinnamon
PEACH FILLING 8 peaches, sliced ¼ cup brown sugar 2½ T. cornstarch 1 T. fresh lemon juice ¼ tsp. cinnamon
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Combine streusel ingredients and place in pie crust. 2. Combine peaches with filling ingredients. Arrange peaches in the pan in two layers. 3. Bake, covered, for 50 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes

or most people, the term hiking conjures up images of rugged boots, stuffed backpacks, hiking sticks and sophisticated gear. For our family, however, the image includes black Esse shoes, black hats and recklech, and mix of local shopping bags. And once our hike is underway, there is nothing like that feeling of being surrounded by the wonders of Hakadosh Baruch Hu — to feel the crunch of leaves underfoot and hear the call of the birds as the sun’s shadows play on the branches above. We are not big vacation-goers. Even loose change finds itself a more important destination than the “vacation fund.” Yet we’ve al-

ways liked to give our children summer fun and great memories by visiting local parks, having backyard picnics, or organizing fun cousin get-togethers. But as our young offspring grew older, I found myself with a brood that had outgrown the local parks. The yeshivah boys, who don’t have that much in extra-curricular programs, can especially use an outlet after a zman of horeving away.
And that is how our hiking adventures began. Over the years, we’ve been treated to the most breathtaking scenes and peaceful sounds as we basked in the wholesomeness of untouched nature. And then, of course, were the escapades that added a kick of adventure to our excursions. There was the time we heard from a sister who heard from a friend about a really nice place called Little Tor Mountain. From the (mis)information gleaned, we learned there were two mountains, one next to the other, with High Tor trails suited for advanced climbers, and Little Tor for those on a beginner’s level. We’d visited Kakiat Mountain just a few months earlier, but as much as my mountain goats loved it, I’d found it a little too taxing. Therefore, Little Tor Mountain was the destination we were heading to! We don’t own a car, so we ordered two taxis to take our family there, as there was no minivan available. I made sure to ask the dispatcher if the driver would know where Little

Tor is, and she said that of course they know how to get to Little Tor Road. Though I didn’t have a street address, I was sure I’d be able to spot a big mountain on a little street; I wasn’t making it out of a molehill! We got into the taxis excitedly, one adult in each car, and begged the drivers to follow one another as we owned only one cell phone at the time. So off sped two taxis headed toward Little Tor Road. We reached our destination, and all we saw were houses, and more houses; no mountain in sight. Trying to see where we went wrong, we finally reached my sister who

finally reached her friend, who finally reached her husband, and we finally got an address, which was only a tad further from where we were, on Mountain Avenue, which is one of the many streets branching off of High Tor Road. We finally arrived at our destination. We enjoyed a beautiful hike (following the High Tor trail) with a slight incline and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. We reached the peak, and what a glorious surprise awaited us: a stunning view of the Hudson River and Westchester County beyond it! We saw cars and trains moving as if in a mini city, and recognized landmarks of places we had been to in the past. The family picture we took then, of children above the view below, is one of the family’s favorites. (Note: There is also a trail called “Little Tor Loop,” but that one can be found branching off from the High Tor trail in High Tor State Park.) ANOTHER bein hazmanim hike worthy of mention is a trip we took to what was supposed to be Buttermilk Falls. This time I really did my research well, and we didn’t head out until I had spoken to someone on the park information line and acquired an exact GPS address, as well as exact trail directions leading to the falls. The driver of our car service (yes, one minivan this time) was not endowed with a healthy dose of patience. We arrived at Greenburg
Tips From Under the Branches Enjoy Rockland County’s proximity to the Hudson River! We have seen the Hudson from so many different viewpoints and angles, from high up (High Tor Mountain, Tallman Mountain State Park) and from down below (Piermont Pier, Nyack Beach State Park, Haverstraw Bay County Park), and we’ve even traveled in it (Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry). It was also interesting to watch the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge from so many different distances and angles. We have also once spotted the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry make its sojourn across the Hudson River while we were hiking in Nyack.
Keep checking the time! It takes as much time to hike a trail as to hike back. You do not want to be stuck in the wilderness after sundown. Many memories and most pictures can happen closer to park entrances, or at trail beginnings. We have watched the sun setting into the water, or played catch in deserted playgrounds, or just enjoyed being together as we extended our outing — but only once we were safely within civilization.
Remember shemiras einayim. While visiting a park is such a healthy, good outlet, make sure that the benefits outweigh the risks. Choose a time, place and weather when you think people will be dressed appropriately, and don’t forget to ask for much siyata d’Shmaya. Sometimes you can schedule hiking activities on those short (and I know, very busy) breaks before/after Pesach and Sukkos, instead of taking bachurim to public areas in the heat of the summer. Be wary of swimming pools located at some park sites.
Before leaving home, I give each child a bag containing a water bottle and some snacks. I usually carry along something extra in case anyone gets hungry. (Somehow or other, I usually find that my husband is left with the all the bags to carry once we get active. It’s a good thing at least some of
the water is used up by then.)
I try to have a warm supper waiting for us when we get home. Slow cooker, oven or a blech — it doesn’t matter. If I manage to, I will even set the table before we leave. Expect an increase in appetite and cook accordingly.
Never, ever, ever lose sight of trails and trail markings! Learn, and teach your children, what markers mean. If you take multiple trails leading from one to the other, memorize the route (you can compose a song or chant for the children to remember; e.g., Red! Blue! Yellow!) or mark a note on paper or on the notepad of your cell phone. It is a great idea to take pictures of the trail map at park entrances to have it for reference.
If my children have a serious desire to climb a mountain, I go the furthest up I can while still seeing the trail clearly, my husband goes as far up as he can while still seeing me, and the children may only go up as far as they can still see their father. They usually still manage to get pretty high up, even this way.
The Monsey View and its Excursions booklet! Some of these fiascos would never have happened if we would have visited these destinations after the attractions were featured. It is something I put away and make good use of. Call ahead to confirm times.
No matter how your hike turns out, make the best of it, and you’ll make many happy memories. You can see that the stories of our less-smooth outings are the ones that get retold, time and again.
Enjoy the climb!

Road, and then at the location the GPS called our final destination, but we couldn’t find anything that looked like it could be a park. The driver road-raged hither and fro, until we finally spotted a park sign that said “Blauvelt State Park.” We chose to get off at this destination before the driver would explode totally, hoping that we would find access to the blue trail that would lead us to the falls. Eagerly, we started our trek along poorly marked trails, up and around, only to find ourselves at the starting point over and again. Nothing to do, nothing much to see, not even a mountain to scale. My husband’s R’ Meir Baal Haness contributions were increasing in proportion to the long faces surrounding us. Our older children tried cheering up the younger ones by jumping on a downed branch-turned-trampoline and singing every leibidige song they knew. The place looked so deserted that we didn’t think we were bothering anybody. And then we spotted them from afar: two hikers in this deserted place. I hurried over to the hikers, hoping that they could perhaps lead us to the wellspring of water. “Really not sure about that,” was their reply, “though I do think that the two parks connect somehow. You might have to walk another hour or so. We stuck only to this area to explore the tunnels.” “What tunnels are you talking about?” my husband asked. “Just a little while down, you’ll

our address mess-up, I called the park phone line again, and then realized that I’d heard, and dutifully written down, the address of Buttermilk Falls as Greenburg Road, instead of Greenbush Road. We’d have to visit some other time. MORE recently, we planned a visit to Ringwood State Park. And what could go awry? I had the address, I had printed several copies of the trail maps, and had spoken to a friend who had been there a week earlier, making myself a mental guide of the area and its points of interest. As we headed into the car a slight drizzle hit the window pane. Not to worry! We knew that there was no rain in the forecast, and I was secretly hoping that all of the “other people” would get scared of the drizzle and leave the park exclusive-
ly for the Mosesons to enjoy. By the time our taxi left us at the park, a steady rain had replaced the drizzle, and then the skies opened up to a torrential downpour, straight onto our heads. The visitor center was locked as it was past closing time at 4:00 p.m., so we convened for a short meeting under the pouring skies. Call a car for a return trip? Try to find shelter? By then we were soaked anyway, so we decided to just head to the trails.
We convened for a short meeting under the pouring skies. Call a car for a return trip? Try to find shelter? We hiked up, up, uphill in the downpour, the rain’s pitter-patter punctuated by giggles you would otherwise hear from toddlers splashing in puddles. By the time we got to the end of the trail, the clouds parted, giving way to sunshine. Then we found another trail on our rain-soaked map, and we headed right over. This path took us straight into streams and rivers, with the aid of some logs and stones that were now fully submerged. All wet, we had no problem wading right in! It was the most nature-themed water park we’ve ever enjoyed. ANOTHER time, we planned to explore Perkin’s Memorial, along with a Bear Mountain hike. That day, the weather turned out to be much warmer than the forecast had predicted, and the stunning spring temperature attracted hundreds of individuals from all over the Hudson Valley area. After a few minutes, seeing that the place was really not appropriate for us, we squished into one car (the other one had already left) and headed to nearby Harriman State Park, only to discover that some type of fair was going on there. Before we made another U-turn, however, we found a trail that looked quiet enough. The fair must have really been interesting, because all visitors remained in the parking area, enjoying the action, while we had the trails all to ourselves. NO MATTER all the travails we came across on the trail, local hiking is still our favorite day-trip choice, as my son so aptly summed it up: “I don’t think we ever started a hike that looked good, but we never finished one that wasn’t fantastic!”

he hiking community is a large and close-knit entity, and trail construction and maintenance organizations all over the country follow the same standard set of techniques, systems and trailmarking methods so hikers nationwide can feel at home in whichever trail or state park they find themselves. You, too, can master the basics, learn how to identify and read maps and markers, and gain confidence in your abilities to safely explore what lies beyond our cities and towns.

SETTING OUT To a seasoned hiker, a trailhead signifies new adventure and the thrill of exploring barely touched nature. The trailhead is also where he’ll park his car, pick up information about the trail and —
find a map of the area. Most trailheads have a small kiosk, or a neat, rustic-looking stand, where a hiker will find safety notices, information about area regulations, and a stack of maps. Out on the trail, the map is your friend, your guide, your most valuable possession. It will mark all your trail options, distances, important landmarks, where trails meet and more. Make sure to keep the map on hand! Most trails are color-coded for easier navigation. Study the map carefully before choosing the Blue Trail or White Trail, Green Loop or Blue Loop, and make sure to select the one that best matches your endurance capabilities. Keep in mind that some trails loop into other trails or branch off, providing you with more hiking options — but remember to always track your progress on the map to avoid getting lost. Once on the trail, stay focused and aware of your surroundings at all times. It’s easy to miss not-so-visible markers, and sometimes even easier to wander into nearby ditches or other well-worn areas that may resemble a trail. Pay attention, and stick to the path.

STAYING ON TRACK
This blaze marks the beginning of a trail
This blaze marks the end of a trail
A standard trail blaze
Trailblazers — in the literal sense! — prepare trails so they can be enjoyed by hikers and visitors. Besides managing drainage systems, removing fallen logs and otherwise maintaining the trails, trailblazers also ensure that each trail is clearly marked so that hikers don’t get lost. Trails that attract more advanced hikers boast less trail blazes and markers, as hikers enter these trails equipped with compasses, GPSs and the like, with the challenge of staying on track amounting to half the fun of the hike. Most trails, however, are clearly marked at shorter intervals, both to direct hikers and to provide them with the reassurance that they are on the right track. Hikers will find markers at the beginning and end of each trail, at each junction, and along the trail’s entire stretch of ground. Markers are either sturdy signs nailed into trees or symbols etched into the bark. Most common, however, are trail blazes painted onto trees in bright colors. While they’re sometimes painted as arrows to simplify directions, these blazes are usually rectangular in shape (though some parks mark their trails with diamond-shaped, or circular, blazes) and appear either as one rectangle on its own, or in pairs of two or sets of three, depending on what they signify.

THE FIRST set of trail blazes you’ll probably chance upon is a set of three rectangles, with two positioned side by side, and the third, and single, rectangle positioned above the other two. This configuration marks the beginning of the trail. A marker with the third rectangle positioned under the other two means you’ve reached the end of the trail. The most common trail blaze you’ll come across during your hike is a standard trail blaze, marked as one rectangle on its own, which generally signifies that the hiker is on the right trail and should continue in that direction. A trail blaze that appears as two rectangles standing side by side, with one of the two positioned a little higher than the other, instructs the hiker to turn either right or left. When the right rectangle is positioned higher than the left, the blaze is instructing the hiker to “turn right.” When the left is higher, it means “turn left.” Another marker that uses three rectangles has two rectangles positioned one above the other, with the third rectangle centered either on the right side of the two stacked rectangles, or on the left. This marker indicates A rock cairn as a marker on a trail that a new path is veering off from the original one. Now, what to do when a trail is above the timberline and there are no trees alongside a trail? What’s a trailblazer to use when marking each one’s progress? In such a case, rock cairns, or almost gravity-defying stacks of rocks, are built alongside the trail as a marker. Some trail markers, especially those used to mark trail junctions, are sometimes also marked with the number of miles until the end of the trail or until the next landmark or point of interest. Such markers can be found in hiking areas comprised of longer and more complex trails.
SO YOU WANT TO SOUND LIKE THE REAL THING? Here is a list of terms accomplished hikers use when discussing their plans, schedules and experiences. Read on to learn the lingo... A day whose skies are blue, cloudless and serene, inviting hikers to come on out and hit the trails, is known as Bluebird Day. Meet you at the trailhead! Are you planning to go NOBO or SOBO? Depending on whether you are northbound or southbound, we may either head in the same direction or meet up in the middle. Seasoned hikers know to pack their GORP when preparing to hit the trails. (Does that or doesn’t that sound like someone wolfing down some food?) GORP supposedly stands for Good Old Raisins and Peanuts, but depending on your food preferences, it can also mean Granola, Oats, Raisins and Peanuts.

When you find a water source, why fill bottles upon bottles that will weigh you down when you can just Camel Up and take a deep drink right at the source? No reason not to. When you’re sure you’ve just rounded the top of the mountain, only to find that the real summit is a few hundred yards away, you’ve just reached a False Peak. That’s the point where your euphoria turns to annoyance… But keep your chin up — you’re almost there! For real, this time. Some trails pass over water, but depending on whether that water crossing involves getting your feet wet or not, it may be either a Ford or a Rock Hop. If it’s a Ford, then, yes, bring along a pair of appropriate footwear, but if it’s a Rock Hop — just hop the rocks until you get to the other side. Walking straight up a steep hill or mountain can be difficult, so at that point the trail may turn into a Switchback, and zigzag its way up the incline for easier walking. You know these footworn paths that form a diagonal cut on the inside of corners? Why turn the corner if you can just cut straight through, right? Whether we like them or not, these Herd Paths, or unofficial shortcuts or paths around obstacles, mean you’re not the first nor the last to choose to walk through this spot. Truth is that Herd Paths wouldn’t even be there in the first place if each and every hiker and backpacker would follow the seven principles of LNT, or Leave No Trace, and try to limit the effect their presence has on the great outdoors. Have you covered every trail, shortcut and spare inch in a given area? Is there not a single squiggle on the map you’ve yet to cover? If yes, then great, you’ve Redlined it! The best way to Redline an area is take the map, mark all the trails you’ve covered with a red marker, and then set out to conquer the rest. You can do it!

The Monsey area is blessed with beautiful mountains and forests just a short distance to the north and west. The vast expanses of Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park offer a plethora of hiking trails and vistas just a short distance away. In addition, many other natural areas in the region abound, including Sterling Forest State Park, Ramapo Valley County Reservation in New Jersey, High Tor State Park and Hudson Highlands State Park. I was asked to put together a list of my 10 favorite familyfriendly hikes. It is very difficult to determine the top 10 local hikes, because there are so many good trails and combinations in the region. With over 200 marked trails in Harriman State Park alone, and having hiked every single one of them, I decided to

select the 10 hikes within a 30-minute drive of Monsey that came first to my mind. My choices included hikes that were shorter and simpler than my typical excursions in the woods, in line with keeping them family-friendly. Now that you have this list and will know some great places to go, get out into the woods and enjoy the amazing nature that abounds just outside your doorstep. Make sure, though, to do proper planning before heading out for your hike. Take a hiking trail map, know your route, and tell someone about your plans. Take enough water with you and hike with good footwear. DEET repellent spray is recommended to keep away mosquitos and ticks. Last, always make sure to check for ticks when you are done with your hike.

RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
After parking, take the path that crosses the bridge over the Mahwah River. This path turns into the orange-blazed Mountain Trail after crossing the bridge. Take this trail all the way up the mountain, where there is an excellent view looking west and south above much of Rockland County. The Manhattan skyline is visible in the distance when it’s not too hazy. More experienced hikers can do a more rewarding full loop along the Kakiat and Old Mill trails. This adds another hour to the route.
Make a right turn on Route 59 where it meets Route 202, and head along Route 59 West, underneath the wide overpass of the Thruway. The yellow-blazed Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail starts on the right side of Route 59. The trail climbs up steeply to the first view, with the Thruway directly below and the Sheraton Crossroads visible directly to the south. Keep on climbing past the first overlook and toward the second, which is a bit further up behind a bedrock outcrop, where there is a great view of Suffern and the Manhattan skyline in the distance.

View from the top of Jackie Jones Fire Tower
JACKIE JONES FIRE TOWER Harriman State Park Rockland County, NY DESCRIPTION:
Jackie Jones Fire Tower, atop Jackie Jones Mountain, has an old lookout tower that was used many years ago by rangers observing forest fires in the region. The fire tower was recently refurbished by volunteers and is open for observation. Hikers can now climb up the steps and into the room at the top for an amazing view of the entire area. PARKING:
Take Kanawauke Road (County Route 106) between Gate Hill Road and Lake Welch. When entering Harriman State Park through Willow Grove Road, after intersecting with Gate Hill Road, continue until you pass the “Welcome to Harriman State Park” sign. There is trailhead parking along the side of the road right before the short bridge crossing the creek. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:

ESTIMATED TIME:
1 hour and 15 minutes
ESTIMATED DISTANCE:
2 miles (round trip)
RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
Cross the brook on the road, and then take the yellow-blazed Suffern–Bear Mountain Trail on the left side, where it enters a private road. Follow the yellow blazes for a moderate climb, which passes an old abandoned estate called the ORAK Ruin with some of the ruins still visible along the trail. The trail climbs up the mountain and reaches a very large communications tower. Continue past the tower for a few hundred feet toward the much smaller fire tower. Climb up the steps to the top to be rewarded with an impressive 360-degree view. To return, go back the same way you came along the yellow-blazed Suffern–Bear Mountain trail.

WEST MOUNTAIN Harriman/Bear Mountain State Parks Rockland/Orange Counties, NY DESCRIPTION:
West Mountain is an underappreciated mountain in the highlands region with a great climb and many views along a scenic ridge. The lookouts to the west have great views of the wilderness in Harriman, and the lookouts to the east include Bear Mountain and the Hudson River. PARKING:
Take the Palisades Parkway north to exit 17 — Anthony Wayne Rec Area. Drive past the entrance gate and make a right into the entrance to the large parking lot.
Park at the northern end of the lot, and walk straight to the path that is gated off. This is the white-blazed Anthony Wayne Trail. Take this trail for a short distance until you reach a wider dirt road, where the red-blazed Fawn Trail begins and ascends up the mountain. Take the Fawn Trail up to the blue-blazed Timp-Torne Trail. Make a right on the Timp-Torne Trail, climbing up past some rock outcrops until you reach the first view. The trail meets up with the white-blazed Appalachian Trail, and you can continue along the two concurrent trails on the ridge for views on both sides. Hike until the blue and white trails split again, and go back the same way, but this time taking the Appalachian Trail down. Climb down Appalachian Trail until the Fawn Trail, and make a left onto the Fawn Trail, eventually reaching the point of the original ascent, and then trace your route back to the trailhead parking.

DESCRIPTION:
Claudius Smith Den is a rock formation with a natural crevice rumored to have been used as a hideout for bandits in the 1800s. Above the formation, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The entire area is very scenic and remote. PARKING:

After parking your car, go underneath the Thruway at the underpass, and then make a left on Grove Drive. Walk on the road for a short distance to the red-blazed Ramapo-Dunderberg Trailhead, and then climb the mountain on this trail. Take this trail to the red-blazed Tuxedo-Mt. Ivy Trail, which goes under the Claudius Smith Den. The trail climbs to the top of the formation at the intersection with the Blue Disc Trail. Take the same route back for the return route. (There are many loop options in this area for more experienced hikers.)

View of the Hudson River from the Major Welch Trail on Bear Mountain
BEAR MOUNTAIN Bear Mountain State Park Rockland/Orange Counties, NY DESCRIPTION:
Bear Mountain is the most well-known mountain in the entire region, and for good reason. There are three routes up the mountain, and each affords a good climb with great views. At the foot of the mountain is the Bear Mountain Inn, with the scenic Hessian Lake, the Bear Mountain Zoo and many picnic areas. This hike can be combined with a full day’s worth of activities. The area can be very crowded on weekends, so it’s best to plan accordingly. PARKING:
Take the Palisades Parkway north to the end at the Bear Mountain Traffic Circle. At the traffic circle, bear right onto Route 9W South, and at the traffic light bear right again and park in the parking area past the Bear Mountain Inn. Note: There is a $10 park admission fee. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:
Difficult
ESTIMATED TIME:
2 hours and 45 minutes
ESTIMATED DISTANCE:
3.7 miles
RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
After parking, head toward the Bear Mountain Inn. Walk along the side of the inn toward the mountain, where the white-blazed Appalachian Trail can be reached. Take the Appalachian Trail up the mountain along the steps. (These steps were recently created by the park service when the trail was rerouted about 10 years ago due to severe erosion.) Continue along the Appalachian Trail after it reaches the road on top where the steps end, and here you will reach the summit of the mountain where the observation tower is located. (There is also a parking area here reached by Perkins Memorial Drive.) The tower can be climbed for a panoramic view; also look out for historical pictures of the park. After visiting the tower, take the red-blazed Major Welch Trail, which is located right outside the tower. This trail is mostly graded at the top of the Bear Mountain Plateau, but then begins a steep descent down the mountain along very large exposed bedrock, with some amazing views along the way. The Major Welch Trail reaches the path around Hessian Lake, which can be taken back to the parking area.

Popolopen Torne is what I call short and sweet. It’s a short loop hike that has an excellent climb and scramble, with an incredible view on top. Located directly north of Bear Mountain, its rocky crag summit can be seen when taking the Palisades Parkway where it bends around near its end. PARKING:
Take the Palisades Parkway north to its end at the Bear Mountain Traffic Circle. At the circle take Route 9W North, and take the first left to Firefighters Memorial Drive in Fort Montgomery. At the next intersection, make a right onto Mine Road. Take Mine Road for 1.4 miles to the trailhead parking on the left side of the road.

Very difficult 1 hour ESTIMATED DISTANCE:
1 mile RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
After parking, you will see a kiosk with the blue-blazed Timp-Torne Trail. Do not take the trail here. You will come down this way. Continue walking along the road past your car and you will then see the blue-blazed Timp-Torne Trail again. At this point make a right onto the trail and take it up the mountain. This is an intense scramble, but the summit is reached soon thereafter, with great views of Bear Mountain, the Hudson River and the Bear Mountain Bridge. Continue past the overlook, where the trail starts to descend, loops back down, and then goes to the parking area.
Traffic Circle. Continue straight at the circle past Lake Kanawauke and Little Long Pond, and when the road starts to ascend after the lake, look out for the hiker crossing sign and the trail’s roadside parking. RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
DESCRIPTION:
Black Rock Mountain is a beautiful mountain in the middle of Harriman State Park with very scenic terrain and topography. The area at the top is full of large boulders and sparse forest cover, which provides unique views that are somewhat different than the general surrounding area. PARKING:
Take Gate Hill Road into Harriman State Park, and continue past Lake Welch to the Kanawauke

1 hour and 30 minutes 1.8 miles (round trip) After parking, take the red-blazed RamapoDunderberg Trail north up the mountain. The climb is steady, though it is moderate and not too difficult. At the top is a beautiful view from both the east and west. Continue further along the Ramapo-Dunderberg to Black Rock, a large boulder surrounded by sparse tree cover and good views all around. At this point, turn around and head back the same way for an easy, scenic hike. For a longer hike, continue further along the RamapoDunderberg Trail to the Dunning Trail and Nurian Trail for a good lollipop loop trail.
Pine Meadow Lake from the dam
PINE MEADOW LAKE Harriman State Park Rockland County, NY DESCRIPTION:
Pine Meadow Lake is the most legendary and remote large lake in Harriman State Park. The only way to access it is via hiking trails, thus adding to its pristine and scenic beauty. This is a long hike and generally recommended for more experienced hikers, but due to its popularity in Harriman, I included it here. PARKING:
Drive to Sloatsburg on Route 17, and then make a right onto Seven Lakes Drive. Continue for 1.5 miles on Seven Lakes Drive to the Reeves Meadow Parking area. This area is usually very busy and parking is often full. Parking on the side of the road or on the road pullouts in this area is also acceptable when the lot is full. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:
Difficult
ESTIMATED TIME:
3 hours
ESTIMATED DISTANCE:
4.5 miles
RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
There are many trails and routes to get to Pine Meadow Lake. Although the route described here is not the shortest, it is the most popular and the most scenic. At the parking area, take the red-blazed Pine Meadow Trail and keep with the trails that are along the side of the brook. Then follow the yellow-blazed Stony Brook Trail until the intersection with the white-blazed Kakiat Trail, and climb up the mountain on the side of the stream near a small waterfall known as the Cascade of Slid. Continue up along the stream until the intersection with the Pine Meadow Trail, which takes you to the western shore of Pine Meadow Lake at the dam. (If you continue along the trails that surround the lake, that will add another hour to your itinerary.) On the way back, detour up Diamond Mountain at the yellow-blazed Diamond Tower Mountain Trail for an excellent view at the rocky area on top, and then take the black-blazed 7 Hills Trail down the mountain. This trail is an incredibly scenic trail, but also a very difficult one and not recommended for amateurs. Once the trail reaches the brook and crosses it, take the red-blazed Pine Meadow Trail back along the other side of the stream and back to the trailhead parking.

RD Rock at the Parker Cabin Mountain Loop in autumn
PARKER CABIN MOUNTAIN Harriman State Park Orange County, NY DESCRIPTION:
Parker Cabin is in a very quiet area of Harriman State Park that is not really known to people other than serious hikers. However, it has one of the most dramatic views in the park and is a relatively easy hike with many options to extend the hike further. PARKING:
Take Gate Hill Road into Harriman State Park, and continue past Lake Welch to the Kanawauke Traffic Circle. Continue straight at the circle past Lake Kanawauke and Little Long Pond, and when the road starts to ascend after the lake, look out for a marsh on the right side of the road. There is roadside trailhead parking after the marsh prior to the bend of the road. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:
Easy to moderate
ESTIMATED TIME:
1 hour and 30 minutes
ESTIMATED DISTANCE:
2.9 miles
RECOMMENDED ROUTE:
Follow the blue-blazed Victory Trail for a short distance until you reach the red-blazed RamapoDunderberg Trail. Then make a right on the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail and start climbing up Parker Cabin Mountain. (This area shows the remnants of a forest fire that occurred in 2016 and affected an extensive part of the area.) The first overlook is on the left, once you reach the top of the mountain, and a bit further is a more expansive view facing south, with a memorable rock jutting out that says “RD” on it with trail markers. Continue along the trail and climb down the mountain for a short distance to the white-blazed White Bar Trail. Make a right on the White Bar trail, and follow it for a short distance until you reach the yellow-blazed Triangle Trail, which ascends slightly and take you back to the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail at Parker Cabin Mountain. Return the same way you came, on the RamapoDunderberg Trail, and then take the Victory Trail back to the trailhead. T L U A F E L L I V N ELLE ICE CAVES Parking: 400 Sams Point Road, Cragsmoor, NY 12420 1 hour 10 minutes 845-647-7989 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. $10 parking; caves are free
We’ve previously featured Minnewaska State Park Preserve (and its exceptionally breathtaking Sam’s Point area) as a favorite hiking destination for beautifully scenic views in a nature-rich setting. Here we focus specifically on the Ellenville Fault Ice Caves, which are open for hikers in the summer in the Sam’s Point area in Minnewaska State Park. This network of caves fill up with ice and snow each winter and retains some of its ice well into the summer — and its cool temperature year-round — making it the perfect escape from the heat. The fault where the Ellenville Ice Caves are is the largest known open fault in the U.S. with corresponding ice caves. An approximately-four-mile (round-trip) hike is required to access the caves. The trails are well-maintained and mostly paved, and can easily be managed even by young children. The trail gets trickier once the caves are reached, though, and the right shoes should be worn for that area. On the way to the Ice Caves, you can make a detour to the top of Sam’s Point for spectacular views, and then retrace your steps to get back on route to the Ice Caves. Another scenic route branches off Ice Caves Road and leads to the beautiful Verkeerderkill Falls in this area of Minnewaska State Park. To reach the ice caves, start at the Visitor Center off the Sam’s Point area parking lot, and then take the footpath to the Sam’s Point trailhead (Loop Road). Ice Caves Road is about a half hour from that point. Depending on how much time you want to spend, you can retrace your steps to the parking lot, continue on to the falls, or take the entire Sam’s Point loop back to the parking lot.

One of the world’s longest continuously marked footpaths (and the longest hiking-only trail), the Appalachian Trail follows the ridgeline of the Appalachian Mountains across 14 states. The path mainly traverses scenic, wooded and wild lands, although small sections go right through towns and along developed roads as well as pastoral stretches of privately-owned farms.
Chances are that if you’re heading anywhere mountainous this summer, you won’t be too far from a section of the Appalachian Trail, being that the footpath straddles the Delaware Water Gap at the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border (think Pocono Mountains), reaching High Point State Park in New Jersey; passes through Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks and then climbs into the Hudson Highlands; runs through the Berkshires and its peak, Mount Greylock; traverses the Green Mountains of Vermont and many of its peaks, including the familiar-to-us Killington Peak and Peru Peak (where Bromley Resort is); and then cuts through the White Mountains of New Hampshire (mostly above the treeline), passing 16 notable summits, including Mount Washington and many others in the presidential range, and edging to just minutes from Lincoln. Seeing that it does traverse a great deal of famous scenic attractions, is it any wonder nature lovers fought for its development?

State Stats The Appalachian trailhead is in Georgia, from where the trail continues through North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and, finally, where its other trailhead is, Maine.
The Appalachian Trail is about 2,150 miles long. The precise length changes over time, though, as parts are modified or rerouted.
Georgia: 76.4 miles North Carolina: 95.5 miles Tennessee: 287.9 miles Virginia: 550.3 miles West Virginia: 4 miles Maryland: 40.9 miles Pennsylvania: 229.6 miles New Jersey: 72.2 miles New York: 88.4 miles Connecticut: 51.6 miles Massachusetts: 90.2 miles Vermont: 150 miles New Hampshire: 160.9 miles Maine: 281.4 miles
By: Shevy Hollander
On the Local Track If you want to hike a small stretch of the trail, you don’t have to travel far, as the Appalachian Trail passes right through Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park. The tightest squeeze to pass through on the entire Appalachian Trail is the famous Lemon Squeezer in Harriman State Park, where hikers have to pass through a narrow crack between huge boulders. In Bear Mountain State Park, the trail goes through the park zoo, and right there in front of the bear cage is actually the lowest point of the entire Appalachian Trail, at 124 feet above sea level.
Hardy Hikers Thru-hiker: a trail hiker who traverses the entire trail in one journey. A thru-hike generally takes between five and seven months. Section-hiker: one who hikes the entire trail in a series of trips Purist: a hiker who sticks to the original route, passing through every white blaze (the white blazes mark the entirety of the Appalachian Trail). Except if the weather conditions are severe, one is only considered a true thru-hiker if he takes this route. Blue blazer: one who takes some side trails to cut miles on the trail Yellow blazer: a hiker who hitchhikes to move along on the trail (named so for the yellow road lines) 2,000-miler: the honorary title bestowed upon a hiker who completes the entire trail, one that’s very hardearned. Many who attempt this feat throw in the towel at some point during the trek.
The fastest-known trek of a thru-hiker was 41 days, 7 hours and 39 minutes, and 45 days, 12 hours and 15 minutes for one entirely unsupported (meaning the hiker did not rely on any help for food, shelter or medical treatment).
Dale Sanders is one very young-at-heart-and-body fellow, who traversed the entire trail just two years ago at the age of 82.
From the state parks, the trail traverses the Bear Mountain Bridge and then onto Hudson Highlands Park and its popular Anthony’s Nose peak. This section, passing through Harriman and Bear Mountain, is actually the oldest section of the trail, which was the first to be completed in 1923!
A portion of the trail in Bear Mountain is made of the newly constructed 800 steps of 1,000-pound slabs of granite, followed by a mile-long boulder-lined walkway with stone crib walls, nicknamed the “impossible staircase” for what it took to make this section of newly rerouted trail hiker-friendly — roughly $1 million dollars, four years of work, and the manpower of 700 volunteers.
