COINS IN THE TORAH
TELEPHONE
Having read your interesting article on coins, I was shocked by what must have been a typing error. You wrote that coins were first minted as currency about 2,000 years ago. Just over a month ago, every member of our community proudly read about the sale of the Meoras Hamachpela for 400 shekel kesef oveir lusocheir. Avraham Avinu was born in 1948. He was 137 at the sale, so in 2085 there was already a standard of minted coins around the civilized world. We are now in 5776, over 3,700 years later. We all know that when the Mishkan was built in 2449, every man gave half a shekel to make the adonim and every Adar, a half shekel was collected for the Korban Tzibur, which the Torah says is worth 20 geirah, later know as mo’oh. Thank you for a great magazine.

Thank you so much for bringing this mistake to light! I apologize that incorrect information slipped in. The Midrash brings that Hashem promised Avraham Avinu that a coin would be issued that would publicize Avraham’s illustrious name and his life’s mission. And in fact, it does

CHANUKAH GAMES
This is in reply to the letter writer in Issue #27 looking for Chanukah games to play at a party. I would like to share a great game that we’ve played at various parties; family, classmates and friends. I wrap an object in many layers of newspaper or wrapping paper, and in each layer I hide funny or old pictures of the party participants, and as the paper gets unwrapped, the pictures are passed

IN APPRECIATION OF JERUSALEM STONE
Thank you for a beautiful publication. I look forward to it every week. I want to thank you for the amazing serial “Jerusalem Stone.” As a writer myself, I truly appreciate Chany Rosengarten’s talent. I love her vivid and creative descriptions, and of course, the brilliant plot. I especially appreciate Chaya’s struggle with her guilt; a road every Yiddishe Mamme tends to take. T. R.
FASCINATING RESULTS
I sent in my handwriting to Mrs. Grama to analyze and was fascinated by the results. Although I didn’t use it as a party game, it was an interesting activity. Thank you for the great ideas you share.
MEMORIES REKINDLED
It was a great surprise to see Bracha Toporowitch featured last week! It brought back such nice memories from old Monsey when I used to live close by to her. This is going back many years ago; we were both raising young children, who are now b”H all grown. Thank you for a great paper. An old Monsey Resident

Your Voice BE VISIBLE
I’d like to bring a serious issue to the table as food for thought. A large part of our community are “pedestrians only,” meaning that they have never driven a car and have no idea what it’s like to sit behind the wheel. As a driver, I’d like to tell the world that sitting behind the wheel is a huge responsibility, and I try my hardest to carefully control my vehicle, knowing that it weighs several tons, travels at high speed, and has the potential to cut a life short, ch”v. On that note, I would like to ask the “pedestrian only” crowd to keep in mind that, although drivers are doing their best to avoid casualties, pedestrians have to do their part, as well. Now that the winter nights grow dark early and stay that way for many long hours, the danger of darkness increases many times. Just as a driver would not always be able to see a black bear walking down the middle of the street during pitch-black hours, so too is a driver not always able to see a person clad in black. Here in Monsey, it is imperative that one always wear a reflector when strolling down the often sidewalk-less streets. Many men and bochurim are careful to take their reckel off of one arm to expose the whiteness of their shirt sleeve when walking on a dark road. That’s a great way to be seen in a pinch, but please try to carry a reflector l’chatchilla. It can really mean the difference between life and death, ch”v. I’ve heard that the Community Outreach Center gives out reflectors to the community. Please go pick up yours! -A concerned driver

RE: CHANGING FACE OF MONSEY
I read last week’s letter in Your Voice by a Monsey oldtimer. I, too, was born, raised, married, and continue to live in Monsey. I, too, am watching the way Monsey is changing faster than the seasons. I agree with the writer that we should all be more welcoming instead of throwing the blame for traffic, school situation, etc. on the newcomers. It’s only right for us to help them acclimate by offering help and babysitters and chesed. She could not have said it better. All that being said, though, there is some validation to our complaints. It’s not the people we are complaining about, chas v’shalom; it’s the change of the old Monsey atmosphere, the pashtus, the heimishkeit that we are bemoaning. Take the advertising and marketing trends for one. When did you ever see goyishe pictures, goyishe faces so blatantly displayed on advertisements in Monsey in the last ten years? Remember how twenty years ago, you would walk the streets of Monsey on Shabbos and greet everyone, whether you knew them or not, with a hearty Gut Shabbos? What about the simplicity? In my school days, a girl who conformed to every latest style was the odd one out. Today, if my kids don’t wear cotton tights- they are the odd ones out. Again, it’s not the people we are complaining about. It’s the loss of the old, simple, quiet town it will never be again. Thanks to the View for letting us express our views openly. Chany Schwarts, Monsey

WeighSmarter ents. Thank you, Hashem, from the depths of my heart! No words can do justice to the following techniques without proper guidance. I will do my best to explain these techniques in simple, practical terms, so that you can see how these tools are “real,” as well as how they connect to your mind and body, just as I’ve discussed in previous articles.
By Esty Weiss
Effective Techniques for Rapid Weight Loss You know that every breath you take is from Hashem. Similarly, you are cognizant of the fact that every hurricane, thunderstorm and heatwave comes directly from Hashem. Did you also realize, though, that all the wisdom and power in the world is Hashem’s wisdom and power? There is absolutely nothing in the entire universe – including your ability to make proactive decisions – that can happen without Hashem! That being said, every single action you take needs a tefillah for Hashem’s help, guidance and clarity. This is all because of “ein oid milvado”— there is nothing other than Hashem! You should recognize that every talent you have is, in essence, Hashem. Your wisdom, creativity, and strength all come from his power and wisdom. Consequently, I would like to thank Hashem for extending the wisdom and power of the world to us. He has given human beings the ability to utilize our free will in order to improve our lives. I am humbly grateful to our Father for granting us the wisdom to use different potent techniques to address weight and/or health problems. It is only because the Ribono Shel Olam loves and cares about His children that He instilled in us these powerful tools, and I’m indebted and grateful for every minute of my life that He has given me. And each day, He continues to give me the strength and wisdom to determine how and when to use the techniques He has endowed us with, on myself and my cli-

By practicing mindfulness on a daily basis, you will learn to utilize your thought processes for the better at any time of day.
ˇ
PRACTICING MINDFULNESS: The goal of practicing mindfulness is to acknowledge your inner strength, and to embrace the sense of “self” that observes and notices your thoughts and feelings without any need to react to them. By practicing mindfulness on a daily basis, you will learn to utilize your thought processes for the better at any time of day. For example, you may notice that you have a thought along the lines of, I want to eat something right now! Then, you will probably notice that – both your mind and your body – experience a strong urge to eat. You’ll tell yourself: Eat this cake now! You can start your diet tomorrow! Or, You’ve got to have the whole doughnut right this

Health & Wellness
second! You may feel as though you can’t control this urge, but BE AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THESE ARE ALL JUST THOUGHTS IN YOUR HEAD AND FEELINGS IN YOUR BODY! They can’t hurt you in any way! You can and have the ability to stay with the thought and feeling without having to react. Have fun observing all the chatter and noise that are taking place in your mind! Ideally, you should set an alarm for the amount of time you want to practice mindfulness each day. Then just sit and notice whatever thoughts and feelings you may have, and bring your focus back to your breath. Many thoughts will come up, and they won’t necessarily be related to food, but that doesn’t matter. You see, the goal of practicing mindfulness is to train yourself to experience your thoughts and feelings by just being aware of them. And when you practice formal mindfulness, it may sound something like this: “Oh, I don’t have patience for this.” Notice that this was merely a thought, and focus on your breath. “This is such a funny thing, sitting and doing nothing,” you may say to yourself. Take note that this is just another thought, and shift your attention back to your breath. “I have to call my sister now and tell her about this mindful-
ness.” And notice again that this is just a thought; notice it and bring your focus back to your breath. Stay mindful of any and all thoughts or feelings you may have – without pushing them away – until your alarm goes off. Positive Affirmations: As you already know, what you tell yourself every day will either lift you up or tear you down. It’s all up to you, so choose wisely. Positive affirmations describe the things you would like to achieve rather than what you already have. They are goals you intend to realize for yourself – and it is the power of your intentions that fuel your affirmations. It may be difficult for you to believe in the possibility to achieve your goals, and this is okay, as long as what you’re saying relates to something you want for yourself. The following list of affirmations is just a sample, so you can either use it or make your own list. Every morning or evening (or both), write down your affirmations. Make sure to read them aloud while you’re writing them. You can add to your affirmations, or change them, as often as you’d like, according to what resonates with you. Sample List: Every day, in every way, I see myself becoming thinner and thinner.
Every day, in every way, I feel more and more empowered by my weight loss goals. Every day, in every way, I see myself making conscious food choices. Every day, in every way, I choose to eat healthily because I’m a beloved child of Hashem. Every day, in every way, I see my energy increasing tremendously. Every day, in every way, I know my excess body fat is melting. Every day, in every way, I thank Hashem for giving me the strength to make decisions wisely. Every day, in every way, I choose to incorporate regular exercise into my life. Every day, in every way, I am grateful to Hashem for giving me clarity in life. Every day, in every way, I see myself practicing mindfulness. Every day, in every way, I see myself reading and writing these positive affirmations. See next week’s article for a comprehensive understanding “What Hypnosis Really Is.”

A Cheder with Vision
Ateres Tzvi
“Every time I have the zechus of observing the talmidim daven with such purity and sincerity, I thank Hashem for enabling me to open the Cheder,” says Harav R’ Chaim Leibish Rottenberg shlit”a, founder of Cheder Ateres Tzvi. We’re sitting in the Cheder, around a table stacked with mounds of seforim, listening to the Rabbi recount the history of the Cheder. There is no question about it. The void that the cheder fills is crucial! When Rabbi Rottenberg shlit”a moved to Monsey, he saw the need and resolved to open the Cheder. With incomprehensible fortitude he jumped into the project. Humble beginnings? Maybe. But from the day Rabbi Rottenberg established Cheder Ateres Tzvi, it illuminated Monsey with its unique glow. Thirteen years ago, in 2002, Cheder Ateres Tzvi opened its doors for families seeking a true heimishe cheder steeped in tradition and focused on academic excellence. The Cheder started with just two classes, but incredibly, within a week, there was already a demand for a third class. Many seemingly insurmountable challenges were overcome with extraordinary Siyata Dishmaya.

At Ateres Tzvi, individuality is celebrated! Each talmid is encouraged and enabled to fulfill his potential.
It’s no wonder that the growth continues until today. The positive and respectful relationship each talmid shares with his rebbeim and teachers is a vital part of the Ateres Tzvi experience. The passion, warmth, and expertise that each educator portrays ensure that every child is instilled with a love of learning and depth of knowledge in hashkafah. Likewise, Ateres Tzvi’s secular program is full and wide-ranging, preparing the boys to face the world outside with fortitude and solid knowledge. At Ateres Tzvi, individuality is celebrated! Each talmid is encouraged and enabled to fulfill his potential. There’s also serenity. That’s the word so many visitors use about the Cheder. The landscape and location of the Cheder doubtlessly adds much to the atmosphere. Secluded and surrounded by nature, the children feel an instant calmness when the bus pulls up at the spacious grounds of our beautiful building. The same serenity permeates inside the Cheder as well. Since the children all feel at home in the classroom, the hallways are always clean and calm while the classroom pulsates with the vitality of involved children. Instilling a simcha in Yiddishkeit is vital in
today’s generation. Therefore, it’s the number one priority to impart lots of knowledge, as well as meaning into the beauty of Shabbos and Yom Tov. The boys have a great curriculum on Hilchos Shabbos and Hilchos Yom Tov. The younger grades have an engaging Oneg Shabbos each Friday. Every week, they learn a new song and the beauty behind the song. Each class has a separate raffle with an age-appropriate prize. Then, a melamed regales the boys with a Shabbos story, which is printed in their weekly newsletter to enable
support for the Cheder and enable them to continue in their holy work.
THE NAME ATERES TZVI Why was Ateres Tzvi chosen as the name for the Cheder? In Pre-War Europe, the Ohr Maleh of Kosson was the Rosh Yeshivah of the huge and thriving Yeshivas Ateres Tzvi, named in memory of his grandfather, the ancestor of Harav Rottenberg, the Ateres Tzvi of Zidichov. Sadly, like so many Hungarian Jews, the Ohr Maleh was sent to Auschwitz along with his entire family, where they all perished Al Kiddush Hashem, Hy”d. So Harav R’ Chaim Leibish Rottenberg chose the name of the yeshiva as a fitting way to perpetuate the legacy of the Ohr Maleh and the Ateres Tzvi of Zidichov, by having tinokos shel beis rabbon thrive in an atmosphere of warmth and Yiddishkeit. Great tzaddikim said that the neshama of the holy Ateres Tzvi was connected to the Tanneh R’ Shimon Bar Yochai and his yahrtzeit is akin to Lag Baomer. May his light continue to shine and may we be zoche to continued Siyata Dishmaya in raising yirei shomayim.
The hallways are always clean and calm, while the classroom pulsates with the vitality of involved children. sharing with the family at the Shabbos table. In anticipation of Yom Tov, the children cover all pertinent halachos, which is printed in a booklet. Practical questions are then answered on worksheets, and the kids are tested orally before the chag. They then enjoy an assembly where they listen to famous speakers speak about the meaning of Yom Tov. Vision. That’s what Ateres Tzvi symbolizes. The vision for a Torah-true institution is reflected in the astounding growth we have observed over the past fourteen years. The parents that entrusted the chinuch of their children into the hands of Cheder Ateres Tzvi can attest to the many qualities their children have acquired in the warm walls of 4 Campbell Avenue. On Sunday, Parshas Vayechi, we’ll be celebrating the annual dinner on behalf of Cheder Ateres Tzvi. It’s a time for parents, family and friends to show their
ONCE AN ATERES TZVI’NIK ALWAYS AN ATERES TZVI’NIK In the past fourteen years, the Cheder has had hundreds of graduates who are grateful to the Cheder, not only for the knowledge they have gained, but for the meaning they have absorbed. “How did you manage to give my son such a cheshek to zman
Krias Shma?” “How did you notice that my son has a feeling to neginah? He sings along all zemiros and completely changed the atmosphere of our Shabbos table!” “Is it true that you can’t pour water directly into the coffee? My son tells me he learned it in Cheder.” These are just some of the phone calls we receive. They truly warm the heart. In each of these calls, the parents attest that more than the learning, they appreciate the feeling for Yiddishkeit the Cheder imbued in their child. In such talmidim we take pride!
THE FIRST CHECK The very existence of the Cheder can be traced to the first check we received from Rabbi Isamer Tovia ben Moshe Schwartz a”h. A strong Kossoner Chassid from before the war, his wife was the one to cook and bake for all descendants of Kosson since his Kashrus was trusted impeccably. His generous contribution of ten thousand dollars was the first deposit into the Cheder’s account. Shortly thereafter, he purchased the first minibus, which could seat fifteen, to make travel easier. On Sunday when he was off from work, he would often follow the bus with excitement as he watched the pure kinderlach, his kinderlach, travel to learn Torah. He may not have been blessed with biological children, but looking at the cheder today, one knows that he was zoche to hundreds of children. May his memory be a blessing.

Shabbos
By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum
If you look on your z’manim calendar, you might notice something very interesting. Sh’kiya for Friday, Shabbos Chanukah, 5776, is 4:27 PM in Monsey. Last Friday the sh’kiya was 4:28 and next Friday it will be 4:29. So, this week’s sh’kiyah is the earliest of the entire year. Some years, Chanukah might come a little later on the solar calendar, and some years a little earlier, but in general Chanukah falls out when sh’kiya is approximately the earliest it can be. What this means, then, is that Chanukah comes out when the nights are the longest. Another interesting fact is that Chanukah falls at the end of the month, beginning on the 25th day of Kislev. It begins at a time when the moon has all but disappeared. It then vanishes completely, and, finally begins to reappear. So Chanukah falls out when the nights are the longest and the darkest as well. It begins at a time when what little light there is, is vanishing, and ends when the light begins to reappear again. Chanukah represents our darkest moments, when all hope seems lost, when all light disappears. Then, just

as the darkness engulfs us, just when we might give in to despair, a miracle occurs, and there is light. This week’s parsha is Parshas Mikeitz. The translation of “Mikeitz” into English is “the end.” In this parsha, it does indeed appear to be the end for Yosef. After being betrayed by his brothers and sold into

When this week’s parsha begins, Yosef had been languishing in prison for twelve long years. Twelve long years in prison, with no family to know or to care, with nobody visiting him or inquiring after his welfare. How much darker could his life have been? Two years earlier, Yosef had asked the Sar HaMash-
kim to remember him, and so far nothing had come of that. The chassidishe sefarim write that Yosef finally came to realize that he must rely on Hashem, and Hashem alone. As soon as he did that, he was taken out of prison and brought before Paroh. The fact that he insisted on bathing himself and dressing in clean clothing before coming before Paroh shows that he still retained his identity. He did not see himself as a prisoner-for-life, but as Yosef – Yosef, who trusts in Hashem. Yosef, who remained a tzaddik despite all his years of separation from his father and the life of Torah in which he was raised. The Toldos Adam notes that we see Yosef learned to rely on Hashem alone and not on human favors because he never once asked Paroh to help him. When he had interpreted the dream of the Sar Hamashkim, he had immediately asked the Sar Hamashkim to help him. This time, Yosef interpreted Paroh’s dream but never once asked to be helped to be released from prison – and Paroh was clearly in a position of power where he could fulfill the request if asked. But Yosef never asked. His

trust was in Hashem alone. What happened next can only be described as a burst of light in Yosef’s life. Whereas that very morning Yosef had been languishing away in prison for what might have been the rest of his life, suddenly he was second-in-command in Mitzrayim. What exactly did Yosef do to merit this salvation? He put his total trust in Hashem. The Chashmanoim were, likewise, facing a time of overwhelming darkness. The Greeks had enacted decrees to erase the Torah life from the face of the earth. Most Jews caved in and lived according to the new rules, while some chose to live in caves in a desperate attempt to keep the Torah alive in this world. The Chashmanoim, however, knew that it was impossible for the Torah to be erased. Hashem would never allow it. So, trusting completely in Hashem, they waged what appeared to be an impossible war against all odds, and they prevailed. In the end, they came to light the menorah in the Bais Hamikdash. The menorah signifies the light of the Torah. The light of Torah will never be extinguished from this world. The light of Torah can permeate the darkest recesses of our lives and eradicate darkness. All we have to do is allow it in. We do this by living and practicing a life of Torah no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, or how dark it feels. And, of course, we must rely on Hashem alone.

DUVID’S STORY: I stood there, in front of my mechutan’s door. I regarded the door — thick, steel, dignifying. Let no one look out their window now, I willed, gathering my courage. The blinds moved down in their tracks, like objects are wont to do when we will them otherwise. I knocked. The door was flung open and the chassan himself stood in the doorway. This would be harder than I thought. I breathed deeply and launched into friendliness. Grasping his hands in both of mine, I pumped them up and down while asking about his learning. His smile was pure and young. I couldn’t give him some spiel without turning into a person with evil intent. “Where’s your father?” “Mama?” he called into the interior of the house. His mother remained unseen while he went back inside to find out. “He’s in Masmidim,” he said. “Fine,” I said. “It’s good to see you. We’ll be seeing each other.”

Recap: Chaya finally begins to prepare for her daughter’s wedding, only to find that her neighbors have already taken the job upon themselves.
I could almost see his question marks, and the conflict of not asking his questions. I left quickly, and headed in the direction of Masmidim. Then I rethought my rashness. Did I really have to tell Goldreb that I was rescinding my part of the deal? Was there any other way to come clean and be honest? I slowed my pace. There was
to feel that I’m enough.” Then there he was, outside of the shul, puffing deeply on a cigarette, shaking his head to listen to what Sanders was saying. “Mechutan!” he called out to me. “Mechutan?” I asked, startled. “How’s the preparation going?”
Did I really have to tell Goldreb that I was rescinding my part of the deal? Was there any other way to come clean and be honest? no hurry. I needed to rethink this and decide on a strategy. I turned toward home. Then I thought better of that, and made a circle back to shul. I could no longer think straight, my brain static a constant crackle in my head. “Bashefer,” I said, looking out at all of Jerusalem, splayed out on the hill in front of me, forming a busy landscape of life and challenge. I, walking down the sloping street, was just a fragment of its vista. “As I face my inadequacies, please allow me
“I need to talk to you.” “Sure.” “Would you walk with me?” He hesitated, lighting another cigarette from his previous one. Extricating himself from his peers, he came to join me. “What’s the problem?” he asked. “I won’t push off the wedding.” “It’s not that. It’s the dirah.” I fell silent, as did he. We walked up a steep hill. I needed to just talk, to tell him my problem, and it was hard, even while it was already half said. He

wasn’t helping, apparently having decided it wasn’t his job to do mine. I don’t have money. But it wouldn’t do to say it that way. I needed to think of a way to make him see, but the quiet was airless; it closed off my mind until all I could see was a distant light, far off, to which I had to swim, with words. “I can’t make good on my side of the deal,” I finally admitted.
Goldreb spun around to me. “Reb Duvid,” he said, “why don’t you repay the loan?”

There. I had said it. “But I want my daughter and your dear son to have everything they need. They deserve it. I want to give it to them. And I would. I really would. So here’s the best I can do.” He was still listening, but not looking at me, looking straight ahead. So he had heard, heard but not understood, not the lack, not the desperate fury in my heart that whirled like a sandstorm each time I wanted to give. “I got a loan. Once you pay your 60 percent, the other 40 can be paid back slowly. My daughter has her business, the sewing business. She’s very good at it. She’ll be able to pay off her dirah, and she has all these years to do it.” Goldreb spun around to me. “Reb Duvid,” he said, “why don’t you repay the loan?” Fear crept up inside me. I leaned against a palm tree, its stem surrounded by dried-up fronds that stuck together until the very top few leaves, forming a canopy above my head. I was like that tree. Dry, with a mere few leaves offering shade, nothing more to give. “I can’t,” I said, “but my daughter can. She’s happy to. This is an arrangement that works well. I only felt it was fair to tell you.” “I don’t know why you did, if you want me to

agree. How did you even think I ever would?” I was quiet. That cigarette in his mouth looked very tempting. It was getting late and we were at the end of the buildings. I should be getting home. I was so small, stupid almost, and the world was so, so big and overbearing, baffling, cunning, and confusing. “I’m thinking about your daughter,” he said. “She’ll be a mother. She’ll be going through life. You’ll want her to be raising a family. I’ll want her to be instilling them with yiras Shamayim, and love, and care. Not running after money so she can have a roof over her head. How can you saddle a daughter of yours like that?” “Because it’s not saddling. Because everyone can handle working hard and doing the right thing under the circumstances they are given.” “Look what happened when your wife started working.”
“All I’m saying is that I’m not having my daughterin-law work. And that I’m surprised you are willing to have that happen. Maybe I should put my percent of the dirah on her young and frail shoulders also?” I stood, reams of thoughts cascading through my mind’s eye. Of my doing stupid things. Of Chuna falling, hitting the ground. Hard. Because of me. Because I wouldn’t relieve my wife of her work. Because of me. Me. And all my children.
Had he punched me in the nose and wrangled me to the ground while pummeling me with stones, it would have hurt less. Had he punched me in the nose and wrangled me to the ground while pummeling me with stones, it would have hurt less. I stood there, face to face with my mechutan, the only person with whom I would be sharing grandchildren from my dear daughter, and I couldn’t even breathe. Tears, those small and private pearls between me and the Bashefer, sprang to my eyes and I sucked them into my nose so as not to let them spill vulnerably onto my cheeks. “It was meant to happen,” I managed to get out.

Malka’la. Faiga. All of them. Suffering. Because of me. I was the one who pressured Chaya to work. I was the one who said no to a shidduch, and I told her it was because of money. Me. Because I didn’t know if I could connect to the Source, if all brachah could come through me. It was because of me. And I was doing it again, and again. “I don’t know what to say,” Goldreb finally said. “Now that I know you can’t pay for a dirah, I don’t know what will happen.” I didn’t know either. I spread my hands out on either side of me, and they hurt. My face
hurt from keeping it tight like a dam, keeping it from collapsing. “All right,” I said. “Decide,” he said. “Good night,” I said. “Good night.” He started walking. And I, I didn’t know where to go. I couldn’t face my family where hopefully, hopefully, they were all sleeping, their chests rising up and down in even rhythms. Everything stung. But worse was the apprehension of what lay ahead. I would have to tell Malka’la that the shidduch, because of me, was no longer. To be continued…

Chanukah is the highlight of our year. The kids start talking about it the day after Sukkos!
Every Chanukah leaves us with good memories. It’s just that time of year that we all cherish!
For someone experiencing illness, reciting the Shecheyanu is especially meaningful, with heartfelt thanks to Hashem. I remember the Shehecheyanu my father, a”h used to make. We all had chills watching his face shine with joy, being able to experience another yom tov with his family. Those Shehecheyanus still remain in my heart.
When I was a kid, my parents would bring an assortment of many different candies to play dreidel with. When we had to put in or take candy out of the “bank,” it was a major decision to make!
After candlelighting, our father tells us beautiful stories from nes Chanukah.
We put our couch in front of the menorah, so that the little ones can’t get to the fire, but they somehow manage to climb over!
I’ll never forget my excitement as a youngster when I received a beautiful Chanukah present, and I look forward to gifting my own children iy”H.
My mother makes the most delicious latkes using the recipe I brought home from school as a child!
Chanukah is a very pleasant time to enjoy the family, and I find that that’s so even when things aren’t done on an expensive or fancy scale.
I have special memories of visiting my zeide and bobba a”h at their menorah lighting and dancing around the table, singing a special Hungarian Chanukah song. How I miss it!
Chanukah is always special, and The Monsey View makes it more exciting than ever!
At our annual Chanukah party, we have a big bowl filled with all different coins - quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies - a few hundred dollars’ worth of coins. All the grandchildren line up and one child at a time sticks his hand into the bowl, closes it, and he gets to keep whatever comes up in his hand. The kids are so happy with this fun way of getting Chanukah gelt!

CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
ported) money and build the best campaign possible.
The Presidential Campaign’s launch holds much significance. The candidate’s handlers will want to make sure that the location, moment and content of the speech will help their candidate acquire the largest base of support possible from the get go. While in the exploratory stage, the candidates and their staff will try to asses not only the candidate’s strengths, but also their weaknesses. Examples would be lack of foreign policy experience or support and interest from a specific demographic. They will then try to have the speech take place in a location which either plays up the candidate’s positive attributes or portrays them as a different kind of candidate than people expected. Even the people in attendance, the ones standing behind the candidate or sitting in the front rows, are screened to put forth the image the campaign wants potential voters to see. Some candidates will announce early, giving themselves enough time to cover as many cities and towns as possible before the primaries. Others prefer announcing later, taking the time to raise (unre-

Running for president is a massive undertaking. Once a candidate has officially joined the race it will be a nonstop marathon from there until they either lose out in the primaries or, if they succeed, the general election. They will tour the country, stopping in as many places as possible, visiting local shops, engaging potential voters in dialogue, holding rallies for their supporters and giving speeches outlining their agenda if they were to run the country. As part of the campaigns, candidates take part in debates that are moderated by members of the media and broadcasted all over the country. They are asked question about their opinions and positions they hold on
current issues and anything else that might shed light on what kind of leader they would be as president.
GETTING ON THE BALLOT In order for a candidate to be eligible to run in the primaries, they have to get onto each state’s ballot separately. The requirements vary by state, but the usual process is that the candidate has to submit a petition with a minimum number of signatures from people living in the state by a certain deadline, generally one that is pretty close to the primary date. Each campaign hires people or takes on volunteers to go canvasing around the state collecting signatures. Once they have compiled enough signatures they will submit to petition to the State Board of Elections setting in motion the first part of the actual Presidential Elections.
They will then try to have the speech take place in a location which either plays up the candidate’s positive attributes or portrays them as a different kind of candidate than people expected.
ANALYSIS In the General Elections, the two candidates have clear differences on how they want to run the country, as they are coming from two opposing political parties. In the primary elections though, candidates are essentially running against their colleagues, people who are on the same side of the political divide as they are. This makes it harder for any one of the Primary Candidates to stand out as the obvious choice to win, especially in an election like we are having this year, where in the Republican race there are more than ten contenders. Additionally, since there will be only one winner, the rest of the contenders will have to go back to their current job in which they work together. This means that for most of the candidates, it is not an option to come out and attack their opponents outright. They will rather try and build themselves up,

pointing out their good character, experience, and prior achievements in order to convince the public to vote for them. There are, of course, people, like Trump and Carson, who have nothing to lose by tearing down everyone else in the field to promote themselves as they are not part of what is called ”The Establishment.” This gives them the advantage of not only being able to highlight their opponent’s negative aspects, but also to claim that they are independent from everyone else and will be able run the country without undue influence from Washington insiders. It seems to have worked incredibly well for them, even more so because of the anti-Washington atmosphere that is permeating the country. which is majority Republican. This makes it difficult for all the senators in the race to point out what is wrong with the current way the United States is being led, as even when they do, many consider them partially responsible for what is happening with the country. This, of course, goes both ways, though, where the establishment candidates might not give the outsiders the courtesy they extend to their colleagues and will be quick to point out any and all blunders or inaccuracies coming from the outsiders’ campaigns, as we’ve been witness to in this election. Another downside for outsider candidates, is that a lot of the approval that is reflected in the polls is hype, and when it comes to people actually casting their votes, positive poll numbers do not always translate into election victories. What will be considered a breath of fresh air during campaigning might start to look like inexperience and ineptitude when it comes time to making an actual decision. In addition, the seasoned candidates have been through elections before and they and their staff know what it takes to pull out a win – and, in the end, that may have a big effect.

Terror in the US
By Rochel Lebovits
San Bernardino, CA; On Wednesday December 2nd, in the deadliest terror attack on US soil since 9/11, a husband and wife, Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, opened fire on a holiday party, killing 14 and wounding an additional 21. The party was being held by Farook’s employer, the County of San Bernardino, and took place in a conference room located within the Inland Regional Center which houses a school for special children. Farook, a US born citizen, reportedly attended the party - but stormed off in the middle, returning with his wife, a Pakistani national who grew up in Saudi Arabia, to launch an attack. They initially managed to escape, prompting a lockdown of the city and surrounding area. They were finally killed in a shootout with Police later in the day. When the police searched their home, they found many rounds of ammunition, as well as pipe bombs, indicating that their intentions had been to carry out a large-scale attack. In the hours and days following, authorities were reluctant to link the attack with international terror; but as bits and pieces came together, it became abundantly evident that the attack was indeed inspired, if not orchestrated, by ISIS. Though Farook came from a moderate Muslim family - in fact, his brother is a decorated Navy veteran who served in the war against terror - it seems that over the last couple of years he radicalized, expressing his support of ISIS and having contact with people from terror organizations overseas. Malik too, had pledged her support for ISIS and held anti-western views. On Sunday evening, President Obama addressed the nation from the Oval Office, declaring that “the threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it.”

Candles, candles everywhere, candles burning bright. Candles in the winter dark; chase away the night…
HALACHOS OF CANDLES Not all candles are kosher! Before washing and polishing your leichter with hot water in the kitchen sink, know what your candles are made of. If wax dripped onto the leichter, it may present a kashrus problem if the candle was made with tallow. The good news is- most candles nowadays are not made with tallow.
Although Shabbos lecht is primarily a woman’s mitzvah, the man of the house should prepare the wicks by singeing them, thus making them easier to light. During Havdalah, we used a multiwicked candle because in the bracha “borei m’orei ha’esh,” we bless the One who created the “illuminations” of fire, in the plural form, thus requiring us to use multiple lights for the ritual.

CREATIVE USES Are your shoelaces fraying? Dip the ends in melted candle wax and let dry. Never worry about frays again! For sticky, problematic zippers, just unzip the zipper and rub a candle up and down the teeth a few times. Zip it and unzip it a few times to test it out. Hope it works for you!
Before electricity took over in the 1900s, candles were the main source of light in a home. If someone couldn’t afford candles, he had little choice but to go to bed early. Methinks such a routine is actually quite healthy!
FAST
FACTS
Although electricity has replaced candles as the main means of lighting, candles are still extremely popular as decorating elements. The US market currently sells around $2 billion worth of candles and candle accessories per year.
Feeling the breeze? For drafts sneaking in through holes and gaps by doors and windows- just melt a little candle wax and use it as caulking. It’s a cheap way to keep you warm and your energy bills low! Chips and dents in your superexpensive furniture driving you nuts? Rub a candle over the unsightly marks until wax fills the space, and then color in with a color-matching furniture marker. Just don’t ask me where to buy that marker, ‘cause I haven’t a clue!
The oldest candles found still in existence came from China and were made from whale fat. Before the advent of modern clocks, graduated candles were used to tell time. The candles were designed in a way that they burned at a fairly consistent rate, and one only needed to look at the markings on the candle to know the passage of time. Candles come in all prices ranges, generally beginning at the low price of 50 cents, and climbing up into the hundreds of dollars for unusual artisan candles. Just visit Tsfas for a beautiful selection of artisan candles! In the US alone there are more than 400 large manufacturers of candles, as well as many more small-scale producers, with over 1 billion pounds of wax used in the production of candles. Candles can be made from a variety of sources, including plant waxes like palm, carnauba, bayberry, or soy, paraffin (a type of refined oil), beeswax, or tallow.

CRAWLING WITH KIDS By: Ruchy Reese It was one of those days; the type that every mother dreads. Each bone in my body was screaming in agony, my exhausted limbs begging for reprieve from the exhaustion. I heard the couch calling my name, beckoning with irresistible lure. And I answered its call. Slowly, I hobbled to the couch and sank into the welcome embrace of its lumpy, bumpy, broken-spring goodness, allowing each muscle to slowly relax. It took a while for the pain to abate, but luckily I was able to soon fall asleep. Less luckily, my little ones came smashing through the door but minutes after drifting off. Lying prone on the couch I mustered up nonexistent energy and whispered a greeting to my progeny, fervently hoping that a miracle would happen. Perhaps, maybe, just this once, they would let me nap??? Surprisingly, those adorable children of mine heard my silent prayer and bounded into the kitchen for a snack, and then settled themselves down for a few blissfully quiet moments. But alas, all good things must eventually come to an end. The end came just about the time I was drifting off into oblivion again, when the taste of near-sleep was ripped away by a bellyflopping toddler landing directly on top of my abdomen. Oomph! Now, I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but there’s a new sport these days, aptly named “Mommy Trampoline.” If your children haven’t yet discovered it, due to their current crawling stage- don’t worry, it won’t be long now. My own little ones discovered this fantastic activity a while ago, and have thus played fairly by the rules ever since. Actually, there’s only one rule: Whenever Mommy is found sitting for a much needed rest; bounce, climb, and jump on top of her, until either the tangled mess of people end up in laughter, or tears. Needless to say, that’s what happened that day. As soon as my five year-old saw the funny faces Mommy was making, (due to the sudden weight of a 25-pound boy dropped upon her) she promptly decided to join the “fun” as well. Hurtling her own 40 pounds in the direction of the helpless figured sprawled upon the couch, she effectively engaged said brother in another round of Mommy Trampoline. Of course the children had a blast, not realizing that the grimaces and tears coming from their mother were actually expressions of pain.

Yeah. Now his suspicions were confirmed. Totally nuts.
Eventually however, I was able to pull myself to a semi-sitting position, and gulping for air, told my daughter to bring me the phone. We were going to call everyone’s favorite person: Tatty! Gleefully, the children perched upon my arms and shoulders like little birdies, eager to hear Tatty’s voice, and momentarily stopped bouncing. I could finally breathe and dialed my husband’s number. Now my husband is a jocular person by nature, and will frequently answer the phone to unsuspecting callers with greetings such as: “Hatzalah, how can I help you?” or “Dunkin Donuts,” to throw the person off. In my fuzzy, exhausted mind, I was planning on turning the tables,
drawled out “ma’am” at the end for good measure. I found it hilarious that my husband had now added a new word to his telephonejoke vocabulary! Again, the voice on the other end of the phone asked me what my emergency was. “Kids!” I squeaked out. “Everywhere! On my head, on my lap, in my nose! They are everywhere!” My kids were giggling at the funny way Mommy was speaking. I was having a blast, waiting to hear what my husband would say next. “It’ll be just a few minutes ma’am, someone’s on the way.” And then it hit me. I was not talking to my hus-
Slowly, I hobbled to the couch and sank into the welcome embrace of its lumpy, bumpy, broken-spring goodness, allowing each muscle to slowly relax. and as soon as he answered, I planned to jokingly tell him, “911!” and then describe the current game of Mommy Trampoline. In my cotton-filled head, it made perfect since that the phone rang only once when I dialed his number, although it generally takes a few rings before he picks up. “911, what’s your emergency ma’am?” a tinny voice asked. “What’s my emergency ma’am?” I asked back, heavily emphasizing emergency, “A big one! A giant one!” “What’s your address ma’am?” the accented voice continued. Oh this great, I thought to myself. He’s really playing along nicely. Mimicking the accented voice, I answered back with my address, throwing in another
band. The voice on the other end was not a jovial husband playing along to the game of over-tiredMommy-is-overwhelmed-withchildcare-and-thus-calling-toget-koich-or-beg-the-husbandhome-from-work-early. I was actually speaking to a bona fide dispatcher for 911. And he actually thought I was a bona fide nutcase. “Is this actually 911?” I practically screamed into the receiver, almost fainting at his positive reply, ending in “ma’am” of course. “I am sooooo sorry! I thought you were my husband!” Yeah. Now his suspicions were confirmed. Totally nuts. “I mean, I meant to call my husband, and say 911! I guess I by accident dialed it! I’m so sorry, please don’t send someone!” I would have been groveling on the floor had it been in person.
Finally, the dispatcher believed me, or at least he told me he did, and promised to cancel the call. By then, my five-year-old had caught on that something was amiss, and we ran through the house closing all the curtains, desperately hoping that the police, or worse yet, the men bearing straightjackets wouldn’t show up to peek into my windows. To their credit, Spring Valley Police always show up when you don’t really want them. I’ve had my bell rung several times by the police when other people on my block have by accident dialed 911. Each time they had the wrong address, although I’m not sure exactly why. This time, however, I had verbally told the dispatcher my exact address and was terrified that they’d come knocking. (It didn’t help matters that my dining room table was overflowing with as-of-yet unfolded laundry, and would be the first thing they’d see when they came to investigate the incompetent crazy lady crawling with kids…) My husband arrived home shortly thereafter to find a darkened house, and a five-year-old hiding under the dining room table, tears streaming down her face, terrified of the police coming to knock on her door… After all, I told you that Mommy Trampoline always ends up in either giggles or tears! This time it was both, although the giggles came only later that night when the police, to their credit, did not show up.

Moshe Holczler
BUDAPEST, 1944
Nobody was sure if there would be a Chanukah for them that winter. It was the beginning of December, 1944, in tumultuous Budapest, beleaguered by German tanks, Gestapo agents and Arrow-Cross hordes under the shadow of an advancing Russian army. The clouds of death floated over the city, which instead of concentrating on its defense, turned against the last remaining Jews from all of Europe. The craze of hatred filled the streets, and finally, even the gentile population was horrified by the atrocities of the Szalasi mob. My wife and I were hiding under the most fantastic circumstances. We were employed as a gentile couple at the printing plant of the Capucine Convent. Somehow, we felt secure hiding among priests. I was employed as a typesetter, and my wife was in the stock room working on the paper sheets. All the Nazi leaflets were printed in our printing shop on the Buda Main Street, while we were secretly living on the fourth floor of a nearby apartment house. We became the caretakers of a luxurious apartment that belonged to a lieutenant-colonel of the Hungarian army. He fled to the West and sublet his entire apartment to us in the hope that we would save it from the Russians. They hoped the Russians would not bother a working couple. Our only worry was that they left behind their faithful maid who acted as a spy under the pretext of keeping the apartment in good shape. She jeopardized our privacy completely, but the richness of the home and its relative security offset this nuisance. Our camouflage seemed to be so perfect that all valuables of our own dispersed family were brought into this apartment. Our bearded Capucine
monk bosses, in their brown cowls, woven girdles and wooden sandals, were the only gentiles who were undisturbedly happy during those times. Their fullmouthed laughs and violent oaths filled our work place. That year, Chanukah was supposed to start on December 11. On Sunday, the day before Chanukah, we were home in our “gentile fortress,” and as the hours neared to sundown, we got an irresistible urge to partake, even if only slightly, in the spirit of Chanukah. We were terrified by the terrible risk, but nevertheless, we started to plan carefully. My wife’s cousin was our guest and brought along two candles. We found the only supermarket open on Sunday and sent the maid shopping. As the sun set, we draped the windows of the small utility room and locked the doors. In the pitch darkness, I lit the shammes to say the three berachos of the first light. At Shecheyanu, our eyes filled with tears. We then sang Maoz Tzur, and after five minutes of sheer heaven, we extinguished the two lights, carefully cleaned up all traces and aired out the room. By the time the maid returned from shopping, we were sitting in the dining room as if nothing had happened. Only our heart palpitations could have given us away. The next day, a bright sunny morning, we had just returned from the coffee break, and I was busy with the lead lines, when suddenly our foreman came out of the machine room. “Gentlemen, everyone is asked to come to the office with their documents,” he announced, with a big, sad face. “We have a military control raid.” Naturally, all work stopped. We saw the military policemen, accompanied by the wellknown cruel Hungarian gendarmes and the

regular city policemen, seal all entrances. I didn’t want to show any alarm but felt the blood rushing to my head. I went to the locker for my papers, but some instinct told me not to pick up my jacket, because I might need it as an excuse later. I was very worried about the reliability of the army discharge papers I had bought for so much money with the help of my wife’s family. I knew that an inspection by these officers was a serious matter, even for a gentile. We were in the midst of a Szalasi revolution, well after the deportation of the Hungarian Jews, when every able gentile man was on the battlefronts; anyone in civilian clothes was risking his life if he did not have perfect documents to cover him. A Jew hiding amongst the gentiles, six months after the deportations, was likely to be shot on the spot without any mercy or pity. The risk was terrible, and here I was, facing my first raid. I crossed the paper-room to my wife. “Take your things and go home immediately,” I tensely whispered, “because I don’t know what will come out of this. I don’t want to be handicapped if I have to run.” She looked at my deathly pale face and quietly started for the dressing room. I entered the office and stood in line behind the other men, seemingly indifferent. My colleagues were released one after the other so I was a bit relieved. When it was finally my turn, the officer looked at my paper with searching eyes, because I was too young to be home. Then he tossed it back at me with a piercing look. “It is no good!” he declared. “The date is already invalid!” I felt the floor open under me as he directed me to step into the corner until he finished with the others. I knew that if I were to wait for an interrogation, I would be finished. I looked around desperately, only to see the grim faces of the gendarmes and the bewildered looks of the Capucine monk who was in charge of the printing plants. As a last resort, my gaze turned to the only policeman who seemed a little more humane than the others present. Somehow, I discovered a bit of compassion in his eyes, as he saw, by my pale face, that I was in a dangerous fix. I gathered up my courage and addressed him. “Oh! I just remembered!” I said. “I have a re-examining paper of a later date.” “And where is it?” he asked. “In my jacket in the dressing room,” I replied. “So bring it at once!” was the angelic reply. (Until this very day, I am convinced that Eliyahu Hanavi was dis-
guised as that policeman.) The officer overheard his words. “You stay here!” he exclaimed in a commanding tone. “Don’t go anywhere!” I was desperate. I felt the last hope fading away. This evil man was picking on me and holding me in his iron fist. A few minutes later, however, he was called to the telephone by his commander, and using this lull, the friendly policeman quietly signaled me to go and get my paper. I went as unobstrusively as possible, sending him a message of deep gratitude with my eyes. Coming out of that terrible office, I rushed to pick up my jacket and then entered the toilet. I locked the door and peeked through the window to the rear of the building. No one was there. I jumped through the window and ran up to the side street, into the hallway of our apartment house. I rushed up the four flights and frantically rang the bell. To my luck, my wife came to the door and not the old gentile maid whom the previous owner had forced upon us to watch over furnishings. If she would have seen my face then, all could have been lost. I almost couldn’t talk from panic, as I told my wife to come right away, as is, or everything might be lost! Frightened, she grabbed her coat, and we ran down to the lobby. There was only one exit, and it posed a great danger for us. It opened into the plaza at the front of the convent. We peered anxiously through the glass door, covered by a shadow, to see if any of the gendarmes were out there. Seemingly, they hadn’t yet discovered my escape, but it could happen any second. This was the most crucial moment, but there was no other alternative. We had to take the risk. We stepped out and hastily bypassed the plaza and hurried up the winding streets to the mountainside. We didn’t care where we were going; we just wanted to get away from there. We crisscrossed streets and blocks, and everything was flying before our eyes in a frenzy. We climbed steadily higher, between hidden villas and quiet estates, helped by the noontime rest of the inhabitants. At a very distant point, we had to stop to catch our breath. “Do you realize that we lost everything?” my wife told me with anguish. “Our home, our jobs, our clothing. I even left my purse with our food ration card with the address of our other hideout. What will be with us now?” “Let’s make sure we don’t lose our lives!” I muttered. Below us, a beautiful valley unfolded in painful contrast to our misery.
Two o’clock at night, we were awakened by a piercing bell and the rumbling sound of a car.

Suddenly, my wife pointed to the backyard of a villa under us. “Look!” she exclaimed. “A woman is hanging out her laundry!” We watched with broken hearts as the woman carelessly hung her clothing on the line on this sunny, breezy December morning, like the most natural privilege of a housewife. “She is not afraid of anything,” said my wife, unable to suppress her bitterness. “She has a home…she is sure and secure…and we are running for our lives! Will I ever be able to hang out my wash without fear like this gentile woman does? Will I ever wash laundry at all?” Only the wind was there to answer, as we continued our escape in a panic. We sped away with the next trolley towards the other end of Budapest, where we had reserved a furnished room for emergencies. Our desperation was boundless. There was an unspoken question in our minds. Was this the reward for our Chanukah sacrifice? Heading towards the furnished room, my wife recalled once again that she had left her handbag with the food cards bearing our new address on them. So not only did we have no food, but we had strong evidence leading to our whereabouts. It was cold and damp, late in the afternoon, and we had no place to go. We wandered for many hours, not daring to approach the apartment, because of the giveaway address left behind. Finally, having no choice, we entered, beaten and dead tired, and lay down on the couches with rumbling stomachs until our bachelor landlord arrived. We told him that we just arrived from Transylvania and that our belongings would arrive tomorrow. We lay down, tense and worried. Who knew if they would come for us? My wife was shaking from hunger until exhaustion overcame us and we fell asleep. Two o’clock at night, we were awakened by a piercing bell and the rumbling sound of a car. They were here for us, the thought echoed through our dazed, half-asleep consciousness. In panic, we dragged ourselves to the window to jump. Our landlord answered the door, and we heard a mailman through the slot. “I have a telegram for Kalman Nagy,” said the mailman. With great relief, we fell down on our couch. Ten minutes later, a soft knock was heard at our door. It was the landlord. He was as pale as the wall. “I am so sorry to disturb you,” he said, “but I just got an urgent call from the
army unit. I must pack up and go at six o’clock in the morning. It’s lucky you came now. I leave my entire apartment to you. You can use whatever you want. Take good care of everything, and you’ll pay me later.” We felt as if the heavens had opened up for us once again. This was a genuine miracle. Starving and without food cards, we were offered a fully furnished home for our own use. Our landlord took us to the pantry and showed us hanging salamis, frankfurters, and sausages, all treif, of course. My wife immediately looked for something we could use. She found a few potatoes, onions, and dried beans. We almost couldn’t wait until morning. Our landlord was sad to go, but still happy that we remained in his house. As soon as he was gone, we burned out the gas range, making it kosher. For breakfast we had some warm potatoes cooked in a thin jar. One danger was eliminated. We had an apartment filled with clothing, linen, everything. We saw how blind we had been when we thought Hashem had forsaken us. A week later, we found out through a telephone call from a city telephone booth that the entire house in Buda had been closed by the army and police after we left and that detectives were still waiting for our return. Two days later, a cannon shell hit the roof of that house and ripped off the front walls. This was the second miracle for us, but the menace of the food cards we had left behind still remained. One week later, fierce shelling began and lasted throughout the following day. The Russian army overran Budapest at Szekesfehervar and encircled Budapest. The next day, they advanced to the Danube River, attacking the section and Buda which included the Capucine Convent and our former home. The site became the scene of house-to-house fighting. All bridges of the Danube River were detonated, and Pest was completely cut off from Buda. Hus the menace of the abandoned food cards was also gone. We then realized that what we had thought was our greatest tragedy had actually been our greatest miracle. Had we not been chased out of there, we would have perished in those fierce battles. We said a heartfelt thanks to Hashem for our escape. And all this, in the merit of five minutes of Chanukah.
I knew that if I were to wait for an interrogation, I would be finished.

Use five pieces of wax and press together to form a cube. (You can combine a few colors for a nice marbleized effect.)
Step 1: Use two sheets of wax to make the pointy bottom of the dreidel, by first forming a cube, and then glide your fingers from the bottom upwards to stretch the top into a point.

Use half a sheet for the dreidel’s handle. Roll it into a tube shape, and then flatten both ends.

dles were made? Here’s how you can make the cutest candles you’ve ever seen!
You will need: • 8 sheets colored beeswax (ours were 4 inches) • Wick • Hot water • Plastic bag • Skewer • Optional: Yarn needle (needle with a big hole)

MOMMY, I’M BORED!
By Craft It
Step 4:
Step 5: Stick the bottom part to the cube, then stick the handle part to the cube. (Don’t worry if it doesn’t stick well; we’re not done yet!)
Put your dreidel down on the side. Stick a skewer through your dreidel, starting at the bottom point and coming out through the handle. Twirl the skewer around and around to widen the hole a bit. Take out the skewer.
Step 6:
Push the wick into the hole. You can use the skewer to help you push it through, or thread the wick into the yarn needle and thread it into the hole. (It may be easier to push through each section separately, and then reattach. See photo.) Pull wick until it’s not sticking out at the bottom.
Step 7:
Pinch the hole closed at the bottom point, sealing the wick inside. Cut off the extra piece of wick at the top, leaving only about a ½ inch of wick.
Step 8:
Press the dreidel together to firmly connect all the pieces. (You can soften it a little in hot water to help it stick together.) Press down on the pointy bottom so that it can stand upright.
Step 9:
Optional: use the skewer to inscribe NUN, GIMEL, HAY, and SHIN on the four sides of the dreidel.

A Tale of a CashStrapped FirstTime Homebuyer by Ann Zeilingold
IS SONYMA THE RIGHT SOLUTION?
This is Jacobs’s story. Does it resonate with you? If you’re at all like me, you’ve spent an inordinate amount of time refining your idea of your perfect home. For me, it’s a detached Colonial with two units and a backyard, steps from the bus and within 40 minutes of midtown. But I knew that a down payment, even of 10 percent, would be a stretch for me, and I wanted to get preapproved for a mortgage to take advantage of today’s low interest rates and home prices. So I found out about the FHA, SONYMA and 3% down conventional loans; SONYMA sounded the most appealing. It was eligible for properties in New York who makes less than $100,000 a year (in this area), this program provides for loans with only 3 percent down, and if you opt for a higher interest rate, the state will give you 3 percent cash towards your down payment, closing costs or mortgage insurance.
YOUR MORTGAGE LOAN OFFICER I called the recommended mortgage loan officer. As the phone was ringing, I imagined a honey-coated voice would answer warmly, congratulate me on taking this step and take time to answer all my questions. Instead, after a very terse greeting and a few preliminary questions, the loan officer assured me that the program was real and that I could probably qualify. She would email me. A few days later, after following the scavenger huntlike instructions of her email, I dropped a thick stack of documents off at her office and wait-

ˇ
ed to hear back from her. After two days I couldn’t bear the wait and called her. Since I had dropped off more than 100 pages of financial documents, I kind of felt like she’d greet me as an old friend. After all, even though I had never met her in person, on a financial level, she knew me better than anyone in my life. Instead I got, “Who? Jacob Shipman? I’m sorry, what is this call regarding?” “Umm, I dropped off my mortgage application a couple days ago…” You know, those 100 pages of documents laying bare all my financial habits, income, spending with MY NAME ON EVERY SINGLE PAGE! “Oh right. Yes, let me see,” she drawled. There was a long pause. “You have good credit. 797.” “But there is a problem,” she continued. “You only have two sources of credit. Two credit cards. The SONYMA program requires four sources of credit, e a c h
with a history of at least two years.” I was silent as I saw my homebuying dreams evaporate. After an unduly long pause she said, “But there is a workaround.” I perked up. “We will consider alternative sources of credit such as phone bills or utility bills.”
GETTING CREDIT That sounded reasonable, but my mind was racing. My phone bill was a slam dunk. I’ve been with Verizon for many years now and always paid my bill on time. But the fourth source was going to be tricky. Until 14 months ago, I had always sublet in New York or lived abroad. That means I hadn’t had a lease or utility bill in my name for longer than 14 months. Sadly, even at 29 years old, the best I could do was provide 14 months of phone, electric and rent bills. If you add them
up, it was 42 months of alternative credit sources—that, and my will to purchase and not give up, would have to do. Although I had already submitted so many documents, I made a second package with copies of my lease, a letter from my landlord, a payment bills from Verizon, Orange and Rockland and 12 months’ rent checks. This time I wanted to meet my loan officer in person, hoping, naively, that meeting me would tilt the scale in my favor. To Be Continued...
