A PLEASANT SURPRISE
Dear Lady, I don’t know who you are, but you definitely made my day. It was hot, I was worn out, and I had to take a car service — never a fun experience. When I climbed into the car, the non-Jewish driver reached towards his stereo and popped in a CD. All of a sudden, Jewish music filled the car. In astonishment, I asked him how he had this music. His answer? “A Jewish lady gave me a few CDs of your music, and asked me that I turn it on it when other Jews ride in the car. So, I turned it on for you.” Wow! What can I say? Instead of being forced to hear tumadiga music, I was serenaded by Jewish music! I want to thank you for your brilliant idea, and also, the driver deserves a lot of credit for putting it on for us. Thank you both,

torah changed the story of my life Mr. Goldberg from Kiryas Yoel called in to Kollel Chatzos, asking to be signed up for a partnership. The request: “Daven that I merit healthy children.” Unusual for someone who has five children under the age of nine. Expected, if you knew that each one of the five Goldberg children suffered from serious health problems. The past few years had been difficult for the Goldbergs. The constant demands of caring for their children… The financial strain of covering medical expenses… The worry that they may never be zoche to a healthy child… What does an erliche yid do when facing difficulty? He davens to the only one who can help. And daven he did, tearfully beseeching Hashem that he be zoche to a healthy child. And then it occurred to him: Kollel Chatzos. ‘If Hashem has planted this idea in my mind a er such a “ And then it occurred

where the Walkway over the Hudson is, via public transportation. There is a train that leaves Tarrytown to Poughkeepsie, and I’d like to know if you can give me additional details about where and when to catch it.
be there.
THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The Tappan Zee Express travels from the Spring Valley Transit Center to Tarrytown, where you can catch a Metro-North train to Poughkeepsie. The Walkway is a 15-minute walk from the train station in Poughkeepsie. For schedules call: Tappan Zee Express/TOR Bus: 845-364-3333; Metro-North Railroad: 212-532-4900. (If there’s a long wait time from when the bus arrives in Tarrytown until when the train departs, it is probably worth it to take a taxi to Tarrytown.)

Your Voice OF PHONES AND PRIORITIES
Firstly, I would like to thank you for an amazing publication. We changed around our shopping schedule so that we now make our grocery order on Wednesday to get The Monsey View! Keep up your work! Much awareness has, Baruch Hashem, been raised about the following subject, but since the problem is unfortunately so prevalent, I would like to air it to The Monsey View readers. My heart aches for innocent Yiddishe kinderlach who suffer because of their parents’ phones. Yes, it’s sometimes hard to believe that a phone can cause such problems, but having witnessed episodes firsthand on numerous occasions, I feel I have to say something. I will share one that really saddened me: This past August, during the busy shopping season, I made a shopping trip to Amazing Savings with my family. As we casually strolled through the aisles, each child had a chance to choose school supplies and other PERFECTLY ALIGNED toys and crafts FONTS that- NOT I wanted to treat them with. They were so excited as the wagon was piled high with the new stuff. And then we witnessed a scene that made our hearts sink. “Ma, I need a new pencil case. My old one is torn,” a sweet blonde-haired second grader was pleading to her Education for Business

mother. She repeated her request, but it did not seem to penetrate her mother’s mind — so engrossed was she with her phone as she walked on. The little girl tried again, “Ma, you told me at home that we will shop for a new pencil case!” The mother looked up for a brief second, and to our disbelief replied, “Okay Sarah, that’s your fault. We passed that aisle already. You should have told me before we got to the next aisle. Now run back and get one!” And a second later, her eyes were once again glued to her phone, which was obviously way more precious than her little daughter. This is not the only time I wanted to shake a mother awake and remind her to focus on her child instead of her phone. Witnessing the pain of children being treated like that made me write this letter. I am not even discussing the ruchnius aspects of the phones — I am broaching the practical side. Why not enjoy life and live in the moment? Your poor kids deserve to have a mother with a listening ear, don’t they? Does your phone really mean more to you than your precious kinderlach? Have mercy on yourself and your children; analyze your phone usage and your priorities. Thank you for the forum The Monsey View provides where we can publicize important matters and bring awareness to well-meaning individuals who really do want to do what’s right. Mrs. R.

As told to: Basya Lev
My husband and I saw a house we liked. We put in an offer and the seller came back with a counter offer. I wanted to take a second look before we put in yet a second offer. That night I was unable to find a babysitter, so we went the next day. When we sat down to talk later that night, the broker called to say that someone had seen the house that afternoon and would also be making an offer. We were told to put in our best offer. The seller’s broker seemed to indicate that if we matched the original counter offer, we would get the house. We decided to do that, even though it was more than we had planned to spend. I got a call the next morning that they settled with the other buyer. However, that afternoon, our broker called that the house was available again if we wanted it. I was pretty upset that the other people made it that we paid more than we were going to. However, it was obviously min hashamayim that we buy the house for the amount we did and that it happened in the way it did.

Leptin and Your Weight WHAT IS LEPTIN? Some of you may already know about this powerful hormone, while others are reading about it for the first time. Regardless, it is both important and interesting to know about leptin so that you act appropriately if you suffer from leptin resistance. Leptin is the king of hormones, the commander of virtually everything that takes place in your body. Consequently, understanding how leptin works and applying that information to your life can totally change your health. This is especially true if you are experiencing a weight issue, thyroid dysfunction, mental stress, inflammation, or low immunity.
HOW DOES LEPTIN FUNCTION? Leptin is made in your adipose tissue, which consists of stored fat. This finding has revolutionized the entire field of endocrinology because in the past, stored fat was simply considered a warehouse for excess calories. Nowadays, experts have proven that your stored fat is actually a metabolic organ, much like your thyroid or adrenal glands. Leptin is a very powerful and influential hormone produced by your fat cells. Your fat cells, by way of leptin, tell your brain whether you are hungry, directing you to eat and make more fat if

necessary. This communication means that your brain should know how much energy is available and more importantly, what to do with it. So, if your signal department is working properly, then when your fat cells are full, this extra fat will cause a surge in leptin levels. Then your brain will receive a very important message along the lines of this: “Hi, I’m leptin here, and I would like to let you know that I’m full and my body has enough fuel for the time being. I will see you again later.” At this point, you would naturally put down your fork. But what if your brain never received that message from leptin? Or what if it did get the message, but you ignored it and continued stuffing yourself with more and more food in response to your emotions? Are you lonely? Bored? Stressed? Do you scarf down midnight snacks because the kids were acting out at bedtime? Well, now you’re in for some trouble.
WHAT IS LEPTIN RESISTANCE? Not unlike insulin resistance, you become leptin resistant as a result of continuous overexposure to high levels of leptin. If you “eat your emotions” when you’re satiated or full, your fat cells will continue producing a surge of leptin so that

your brain can recognize that it’s time to stop eating. If you continue to ignore this message, your body will become leptin resistant and won’t inform your brain that you’re full, which can actually make you still feel really hungry! It’s a miracle that anyone with leptin resistance ever stops eating due to the signaling issues I mentioned previously, and this is a major reason why some people are always hungry. And remember, people become leptin resistant by
overeating in the first place, so it can be a very difficult thing to battle. It’s like you’re eating and you never feel satisfied, or you finally stop eating when you feel physically sick as a result of the amount of food you’ve consumed. In short, the only known way to reestablish proper leptin signaling is to change a few things in your diet plan and learn how to stop eating once your brain has received the signal to do so. If you start ignoring the signal, you risk becoming resistant to
leptin again. It seems like a vicious cycle, but with a few crucial changes you can get your leptin supply to function at optimal levels. Stay tuned for next week’s article on the five rules to reverse leptin resistance.

Mr. and Mrs. Rosen were celebrating their thirty-sixth anniversary together with their children and grandchildren at a special dinner the children had prepared in their honor. At the dinner, each of the children came to Mr. Rosen, one at a time, to present their father with a gift. First came his son Mendy, who presented Mr. Rosen with a golden watch. Next came his daughter Nechama, who presented her father with… a golden watch. Third came his son Daniel, who presented his father with… a golden watch. Mr. Rosen’s children laughed at the repeated gifts and each offered to bring a replacement, but Mr. Rosen refused. He said that each one was precious to him and should not be exchanged. Secretly, Mr. Rosen understood what each gift meant to the one who gave it, and therefore each watch was unique in his eyes. He knew that Mendy had given him the watch to make up for the fact that Mendy had once lost his father’s watch. Mr. Rosen had replaced the watch and told Mendy not to worry about it, but Mendy was showing that he wanted to take responsibility nevertheless. Nechama was surely bringing a watch because she wanted to show appreciation. When Nechama had been a kallah many years before, the family had fallen into in a tight

financial situation and could not afford a gold watch for her chasan. Mr. Rosen had taken his own gold watch and had it polished like new so that Nechama would have a beautiful gift for her chasan. Now that she was in a financial position to do so, Nechama wanted to show her gratitude. Daniel’s watch was a different story. Daniel was

He came late to davening and late to work, and in general he wasted time. Mr. Rosen had patiently worked with him to come to understand the value of time, explaining that every moment is precious like gold. Daniel was surely showing his father that he had internalized the message and was thankful to his father for helping him understand it. No, Mr. Rosen did not see each
gift as identical, and he treasured each one. This week’s parsha describes the opening of the Mishkan on Rosh Chodesh Nissan 2449. The nasi of each shevet brought the very first korbanos to the newly erected Mishkan, one nasi per day. The Torah describes in full the korbanos brought by each of the nasiyim. First came Nachshon ben Aminidav from Shevet Yehudah: “V’korbano ka’aras kesef achas shloshim umei’ah mishkalah… – And his offering was one silver bowl weighing one hundred thirty shekels…” The Torah uses fifty-three words to describe the full list of every korban that Nachshon ben Aminadav brought to the Mishkan. The Torah then lists the korbanos that Nesanel ben Tzuar of Shevet Yissachar brought on the second day: “V’korbano ka’aras kesef achas shloshim umei’ah mishkalah… – And his offering was one silver bowl weighing one hundred thirty shekels…” The Torah uses the same fiftythree words to describe the full list of every korban that Nesanel ben Tzuar brought to the Mishkan. Likewise, on each of the ten subsequent days, the remaining nasiyim brought the same exact list of korbanos, and the Torah uses the same exact fifty-three words to describe the korbanos of each nasi, for a total of twelve times.
Hilchos Shabbos The kapitel that has the list of korbanos twelve times occupies 89 pasukim, making Parshas Nasso the longest parsha in the Torah, with a total of 176 pasukim. We know that the Torah does not waste words. Why would the Torah detail the same list twelve times, rather than just say that each of the nasiyim brought this list on each of the first twelve days of the Mishkan? The Midrash (Nasso Rabbah 13:14) gives us an answer: although it looks like the nasiyim all brought the same korbanos, each one had a different kavanah. The Midrash goes on to describe the individual kavanah of each nasi. Because each nasi had a unique kavanah when bringing his korbanos, his korbanos were not identical to the ones brought by the other nasiyim – even though they all brought exactly the same items. No two people are the same, and no two people think the same. Two people can perform the same exact physical action, but in the world of ruchnius the differences become apparent. Each one of us is unique and therefore the avodah of every one of us is unique. Our avodah might not be on the same madreiga as Moshe Rabbeinu’s, and our kavanos may not be kabbalistic, but without the unique avodah of each and every one of us, something precious is missing from the world. Hashem does not make mistakes and Hashem does not make something that is not necessary, so if Hashem created each one of us, it must be that each of us has something unique to contribute to the world. We may all daven the same Shemonah Esrei, but each tefillah is unique, and if one person did not daven, then something special is missing. No person should ever feel that any mitzvah he performs is just a repetition of the same mitzvah performed by someone else. We each bring something valuable to the world. May each of us remember this and be sure to treasure the precious and unique avodah of ourselves and of those around us.

May I put baked potato kugel into the pot of cholent after the Friday night seuda? One of the Lamed Tes Melachos is Bishul. Bishul (cooking) means taking raw, inedible food, and through the medium of heat, bringing it to become rayuh l’achila (edible). There are three forms of bishul. • Cooking food on a flame (bishul). • Baking food in the oven (afiya). • Roasting dry food on the flame (tzliya). • Once food has been cooked, one is allowed to reheat it, even if the food has cooled off, because ()אין בישול אחר בישול, food that has already been cooked cannot undergo the cooking process again. • Reheating a davar yovesh (dry food) is not considered cooking. (However, one may not reheat the food on the regular blech because of מראית עין, but one may place it on any hot surface, like on top of the lid of the cholent pot.) • One should not reheat any liquid which is below room temperature. • Although it’s muttar to reheat dry food as mentioned in the point above, it is assur to cook something that was baked or bake something that was cooked, as those acts would change the texture of the food — a change that is considered a new מעשה בישול. This halacha applies to: • Baking food after roasting • Cooking or roasting food after baking • Cooking food after baking or roasting • For example, one may not take a piece of chicken out of the pot, even if it is hot, and place it next to the flame or on top of the lid of the cholent, so that it changes texture to become roasted chicken. This would fall under the cat-
One Halachah at a Time By Rebbetzin Y. Weissmandl
egory of roasting after baking. • There are certain types of soup mandlen that are deep-fried. After they are deep-fried, they are dried on a hot air conveyor belt. In this case, the first form of bishul (deep-frying) does not become batal. Therefore, one may put these mandlen into a plate of boiling soup. • One may not put challah or baked croutons into a plate of boiling soup (as it would fall under the category of cooking after baking). • If one sees that the cholent is dried out, one may add hot water directly from the Shabbos hot water kettle into the cholent. (Precautions should be taken that the steam of the cholent does not touch a parve hot water kettle, thereby making it fleishig. And of course, a milchig urn should not be used.) Another option is to take a dry and clean parve cup (with a handle) and dip it into the kettle, drawing water (not from the spout) which may then be added to the cholent. One may not mix the water into the cholent but should let the water drip down on its own. • If one wants to add baked leftover potato kugel into the cholent on Friday night it is muttar to do so. 1. If the kugel was already on the counter, one may only put it on top of the lid of the cholent. 2. If the kugel was not removed from the blech, one may put it into the cholent itself, but not dipped into the cholent. (This is so that it should get heated by the steam and not cooked in the water.) If the kugel was together with any other foods and has liquid on the bottom, one may put it into the cholent (even into the liquid.) This only applies if it was not removed from the blech.

BAKING
OUT OF THE BOX By Esty Heller
Bubby’s apple pie makes me remember the scrape on my knee, the one that Bubby doused with that purple iodine ointment thingie that wouldn’t come off for a month, no matter how I scrubbed. Every time I bake apple pie in my own kitchen, exactly the way I’ve done it at Bubby’s side, I subconsciously itch my knee. The left one. Sniff. The air is fragrant. The kitchen is warm. Steam curls from the just-out-of-the-oven cookies sitting on the cooling rack. It’s a cozy, unforgettable moment, a setting etched in our minds for a lifetime. Smell is more than just a practical sense. It’s a powerful function, directly connected with the areas of the brain that trigger emotion and memory. Bubby’s apple pie? Ma’s chocolate babke? Those memories are like reliving our youth. We practically hear The Marvelous Middos Machine squeaking in the background when we think of that oozing chocolate. And now, in the role of motherhood, we’re the ones creating memories for our children. We slide pans into the oven, warming our kitchens and perfuming the air with scents of love. The cookies are gone before we manage to put some away for Shabbos, but the impact of the baking experience remains forever. Baketivity knows the magic of baking. They also understand children, and the effective way to reach their hearts. And therefore, they’ve entered our kitchens.

When my children see me preparing something in the kitchen, they pull up chairs to the counter and ask if they can “do a job.” They feel so proud when they can contribute to a meal (they’re also more likely to actually eat it!)... and they’re immeasurably more proud when they can prepare something by themselves, without Mommy’s help! Kids are much more capable than we allow them to be. I remember one day, when my daughter was three: we had made a cookie batter, and then I stepped away to speak to someone who was at the door. When I came back, there was a tray full of rolled cookie dough balls, ready for baking. I would never have known that she was capable had
What is Baketivity? Baketivity has turned baking into an activity by introducing a delightful product to the market: baking kits, designed for children’s use. Each kit contains the recipe and instructions for a special baking activity and the pre-measured ingredients for that recipe, neatly packaged in individual vacuum-packed bags to prevent messy spills. The kits also include an educational lesson, and an exciting game related to each activity. The box arrives to your door, and the fun begins! Out come the aprons, the mixing bowls, the gleeful smiles. With their fully equipped package, children need only basic supervision for this project. You would never have guessed what your kids are capable of. They get to explore their independence, and you can only marvel at the results: beautiful and delicious confections.
What do you need to get started? Almost everything you need is in the box. The instruction card lists the additional stuff you’ll need, like eggs — you wouldn’t want a cracked one arriving in your box! — and baking pans. And of course, a children’s music album playing in the background will only enhance the experience.

I stood next to her the entire time. And you can’t imagine how good she felt! Baketivity brings more such moments into a home by taking out the guesswork and truly giving children of all ages the power to create on their own. I especially love the concept for birthday parties, when a “grownup” can’t be in twelve places at once. The addition of fun, educational lessons that Baketivity ties into the process makes each box even more valuable. This is a gift of confidence!
Choose a box and let’s start baking! What will you choose first? Will it be Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies with the black-andwhite drawing game? Atomic Cake Pops that teach children all about atoms? How about Swirling Cinnamon Buns, with a special lesson on synonyms? Whatever you choose, you’re inviting your children to bond with you in a special way that they will cherish forever. And of course, remind them to wash their hands with soap before they start. You’re the mother, after all!
Let’s throw a party! Your daughter’s birthday is coming up, and you know you want to do something special, something different. She’s at that tricky age, somewhere between “big” and “small,” when kids feel torn between a desire for independence and an urge to cling to the comfort of Mommy’s apron strings. This is the perfect activity for your daughter — and her friends. Baketivity carries special Group Kits, inviting whatever number of guests your daughter is having at her party to participate. Baking together with friends, and with Mommy around to monitor the proceedings (and the oven!), will create a most memorable birth-

day party for your kid — who you must admit has really grown up! Surprise your daughter and her guests with special Baketivity personalized baking equipment, like aprons, rolling pins, whisks, and more. This is one birthday your child will never forget. But really, there’s no need to wait around for a birthday. At any family gathering, Baketivity makes for the perfect program. Set up tables for mothers and children to work together and watch the happy interactions between them. The activities teach children important skills, build their confidence, and gives them a wonderful sense of satisfaction. And while the cake pops bake, children explore the cards that come along with every package, learning interesting lessons and enjoying fun games together. It’s a moment you’ll want to have a camera handy.
A Bubby’s Nachas Recently, a proud grandmother reported how she had sent her grandkids a Baketivity kit. The kids were elated! They sent Bubby pictures of what they’d baked and told her how good they felt being able to do it all on their own. Their excitement was electric, prompting Bubby to immediately order kits for her other grandkids as well.

The fun never ends
With the last of that gooey cinnamon bun washed down with a glass of milk, the taste of the warm bonding established with your children lingers. This is an experience you’ll want to repeat, constantly. Baketivity offers special monthly subscription plans for families who love baking together. Your children will eagerly anticipate the surprise baking kit that will arrive to your door every month. There’s always a new and exciting activity on the agenda for young and zealous bakers. Think your cousin Miriam or your friend Dina will appreciate a kit like yours? Send her a box — or a subscription plan — as a gift. This is a gift that’ll delight her day, and of course, create everlasting memories for her family.
Baketivity — on a large scale
Summer is upon us and camps are feverishly planning fun-packed programs for campers. Designate a baking day for campers to explore the kitchen. Baketivity is happy to enhance the summer for your campers by offering special bulk orders. Nothing compares to the joy of a group of kids around a table, rolling dough and drizzling chocolate, with flour dusting their faces. For children with special needs, baking is a fantastic learning experience. Allow those sweet children to master baking skills and revel in the feeling of accomplishment that comes along with hands-on activities. It’s an opportunity to bring joy to these children’s lives. A little secret… Baketivity isn’t exclusive for children. Busy moms who would love to bake some homemade goodies for her kids but can’t be bothered with clipping recipes and shopping for ingredients greatly benefit from the convenience of Baketivity kits. It’s a no-fail experience that reduces the hassle baking could entail. Now, with a long week of vacation between school and camp coming up, Baketivity is the ideal way to occupy kids. It’s a fun, structured activity for the entire family.

Like smiles and laughter, food is one of those things that crosses nearly every cultural divide in a largely effortless manner. In fact, food is so good at breaking down barriers that halacha gives us very specific guidelines about with whom, and how, one may share a meal. It is fascinating to note, however, that inasmuch as food is capable of spanning the chasm of difference, the “difference” of each nationality’s trademark foods is precisely what makes food such a powerful defining force. From curry-laden Indian food to rice-based Chinese food, variants in the world of gastronomic pleasures stamp each dish with its own mark of belonging. In the Jewish world, too, food screams out the origin of its maker — whether that person originally hails from Syria, Latvia, Hungary, or the good ole’ US of A. One common thread runs through all Jewish food however: the thread of spirituality. Our food is “soul food” in the deepest sense of the word. Of course, even the seemingly “simple” act of eating kosher has a tremendous impact on the Jewish neshama, though kashrus is but one — albeit the most important — aspect of soulful eating. For thousands of years Yidden have been patchkening and perfecting, all the while endowing their foods with tefillah and meaning. Behind what are now common dishes, hide a treasure-trove of spiritual insight. Many of those insights have simply bypassed the awareness of our generation, however; sadly, we do not always know why we prepare traditional foods. If we’d be able to contemplate the reasons why we eat what we eat, we’d be able to take that awareness, and with siyata d’Shmaya, draw even closer to the Ribono shel Olam. Let’s then explore some of the spiritual aspects behind the foods we eat. We’ll focus now only on baked goods, but rest assured that other types of foods have deeper meaning behind them as well! Soul food is an expansive topic, with enough information to keep a writer writing until all of the pens in the world are empty of ink, so be aware that this article is no way comprehensive.
Chalah
There are many ways to braid a Challah, such as round during the days between Rosh Hashanah and the yom tov of Sukkos, and in the shape of a key after Pesach. The rest of the year, however, we also braid our bread in a spiritually significant manner. Far from a simple beautification method, Challah is often braided with six strands. Those six strands represent the six days of the weekday in which we run helterskelter, but on Shabbos — no matter who we are and
54 / T HE MO N S E Y V IE W
what forces call us from the outside world — we turn exclusively inwards towards our family, our neshamos, the Torah, and the Holy Shabbos. Those six strands, when doubled as Lechem Mishna, also represent the twelve loaves of Lechem HaPanim that were placed in the Bais HaMikdash every Shabbos. Likewise, many people have the minhag to bake twelves Challahs every week. For Hoshana Rabba there are people who have the custom to create a hand out of dough and place it on top of the challahs that will be eaten. This is to show that, according to the Zohar, although our year’s verdict was sealed on Yom Kippur, the verdict wasn’t yet “delivered” to us, and we still have a chance a to change the out-
come by throwing a “kvitel” into Hashem’s “hand” which is open, ready to be m’kabel our Tefillos.
Lukshen Kugel
Lukshen kugel is one of those foods that has its root in millennia gone past. When the Yidden finally were granted the privilege of entering Eretz Yisroel and were assigned their own parcels of land, everyone was so overcome with excitement at being able to perform the mitzvah of
hachnosas orchim that they gave each other turns at hosting the multitudes. No one would think of entering another’s domain empty handed, so each of the thousands of people visited with some small gift of food, which was then mixed to make one item. Due to the many strands of the lukshen required to make a kugel, we recall our ancestors and the excitement with which they did hachnosas orchim. Its also noteworthy to mention that the traditional shape of any kugel was round, as the Lashon Kodesh word for “like a circle” is found within the word kugel (k’ugel), though I guess that’s kind of like the chicken and egg question. Which came first: the shape, or the name?
Sambusak
Mustachudos Yom Kippur, Hoshana Rabba, and Purim. These three holidays, “hide” their holiness, so to speak, in the cloak of a mundane weekday. These festivals are also days of judgment, and by serving meat (which is representative of the midas hadin), covered in bread (which represents mercy and compassion), our food becomes an expression of Tefillah, asking Hashem to allow his rachmanus to overcome any harsh judgement. These three festivals are also ones on which we “klap” something: graggers, hoshanos, and Al Cheit. To remember this, we use meat that has been klapped and chopped.
Kindel
Our Sephardic brethren have the delicious custom of eating sambusak on Shabbos — a fried, or sometimes baked, dough-filled pocket of meaty goodness. The reason for this is to commemorate the mann that the Jews subsisted on in the Midbar. Just like the mann was covered by dew on top and bottom, so too is the meat covered by the dough.
Kreplach
Similar to sambusak is the ashkenazic “krepel,” a pocket filled with chopped meat. The root word of “krep” is an acronym for Kippur, Rabba, and Purim, hinting to the three times of a year that this delish dish makes its appearance: Erev
56 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W
Kindel is rather similar to krepelach, in that we seek to hide the midas hadin. There’s another reason we eat this sweet and nutty spiral pastry on Hoshana Rabba: until Hoshana Rabba many of us have the minhag to refrain from eating nuts, due to the fact that the word for “nuts” has the gematria of “sin.” Until Hoshana Rabba, when the gates finally close even to kvitlach, we still beg and plead for Hashem to retract any punishment for our sins and studiously avoid any reminder that they existed. Once Hoshana Rabba arrives, we can relax in that regard.
For communities that hail from Rhodes, a small island off of Turkey, mustachudos are the symbolic Pesach cookie. These little nutty treats are shaped like pyramids. I give you one guess as to why…
Lekach
Some chasidim have the custom of asking for honey cake (lekach) from others on Rosh Hashana, in the hopes that if there is a gezeira that one should be reduced to begging for food, they will have already fulfilled it by asking for cake from others.
Of course, there is so much more to say about spiritual symbolism in Jewish baked goods, but now that your appetite has been whet, feel free to dig in and serve yourself! Author’s note: Most of this information was culled from the wisdom of a walking sefer Torah, a Rebitzin of high-regard. For a more indepth study on the reasons behind traditional Jewish foods, look into the Sefer Ta’amei HaMinhagim and in Sefer Magen Avraham Orach Chaim.

Recap: Sara meets with the principal of a small, new school willing to accept Tehilla. On Shabbos, she’s invited over to the new neighbors for Shalosh Seudos, and is blindsided by the opulence in the small apartment.
Sara sat at the edge of her seat, the hard, shiny plastic covers making it easy for her to sit just at the seam of the upholstered cushions. She piled her plate delicately, with small molehills of food, watching her daughters do the same. “It’s so nice to meet you all,” she said, like the executive she was. “Everything is beautiful.” She knew, even as she was saying these words, that they were not conveying what she wanted to say — that she was genuinely happy for this fascinating group of people to have found homes, that she aimed to be the best neighbor she could, and that she was open for companionship and for them to visit her in return. They were the right words, but not the right language, not for these people. “So I’m in Woodbury Commons, and my husband is late to pick me up,” said Goldy, a young woman with presence. “And what did I find?” She paused, evidently having learned the art of arresting people’s unavailable attention from an early age. “What did you buy?” a rounder, happier lady asked her. Goldy held up a finger. “Listen,” she said. She made fleeting eye contact with each person around the table. Already, Sara could see that there was a dynamic here, a family or grade school tangle of people and desires and fears playing itself out in who dominated and who shook heads. “So my husband calls me, I call him, whatever.” Goldy laughed. “And he said, ‘Take a taxi.’ ” “It must be challenging to get around without driving,” Sara offered, but the women around the table gave her only a requisite nod, they were all either shoveling food, or delicately holding their plates, eyes fixed on young Goldy. “So I call the taxi, and while I’m waiting to get into the car, I see Malka Raizy Hecht. She’s holding a Prada bag, with a shoe box. You know her.” The very room, all the attention trained on Goldy, now erupted around the table. Malka Raizy, apparently — Sara didn’t know her, but, based on the nuggets being announced around the

Show me.” Sara didn’t know the Malka Raizy Hecht. But she felt bad for her, and a part of her imagined, while the women talked, what it would be like if she, herself, was so idolized and disdained at the same time. And all the while, she stuffed herself with the fancy foodstuffs, one delicate bite at a time. When she moved aside a large strawberry shortcake trifle to get to the smoked fish platter, she spotted her own cake pops. They looked poor, bedraggled, simple, the platter they sat on a joke next to the crystal and hammeredsteel plates around them. Her daughters, seated at the other end of the table, must have spotted the embarrassment first. Sara served herself a cake pop, and couldn’t decide if she should pass the plate around to everyone else with a, “My daughter and I made this,” when the lady next to her, Tzipoiry Eiss, said, “I’ll have one.” The plate was passed around. “You made these yourself?” Mrs. Teller, in a beautifully wrapped tichel, asked. “We made them together,” Sara said, and she smiled at Bracha Esther, who blushed and lowered herself in her chair, but nevertheless kept smiling, courageously.

Goldy brought the conversation back to where it was before Sara and her daughter derailed it. “So she opens it. You can’t not do that with me. And she had a pair of heels, you know those square-heeled pumps. I tell Malka Raizy, ‘It must be so much fun to shop,’ and she tells me…” Goldy had two women giving her their rapt attention, but she needed them all. She raised her voice and infused it with more verve. “Listen to this. She tells me, ‘I’ve lived this way all my life.’ Can you imagine?” The conversation finally turned to what Goldy had purchased in Woodbury Commons. Straps vs. high sporty shoes were discussed. Dresses and the advantage of one-piece over two-piece outfits. The problem with waiting for sales. “By the time you get there, everything worth buying has been scooped up. Really. The stores are empty,” Goldy pronounced. “But you can order them often...” By the time Sara walked out of that house, bidding the women a, “Gut voch,” she felt a jumble of emotions, the remnants of unwanted thoughts, rotting feelings, and some scraps of self-loathing piled onto each other in a haphazard, discarded manner. Not to mention, that over the hour of discomfort, she’d refilled her plate several

Common sense. times, and the salted fish, chilled sushi, dressing-drenched salad, and margarine pastries didn’t help make her lighter. One woman, Tzipoiry Eiss, followed her out, a good, unselfconscious conversationalist, whose lack of qualms made her carry a conversation all the way to its demise. Elimelech should be home, but Tzipoiry chattered about moving, about ants she’d already found in the apartment, and Sara found her mind wandering, but kept it in check politely, with great effort. She was exhausted. That whole social scene had seeped all her energy out. Tzipoiry kept talking. “Why don’t you come over next Friday night?” Sara offered. “My husband should be home now, but I’ll be glad to continue the conversation soon.” Those words proved fatal. What she hadn’t known, and what these women from a world of competitive balabusta’shaft could have easily informed her, had she asked, was that you’re never too nice to someone who is potentially dangerous. You always make sure to hide who you are because you never know who is reporting to whom. And you never, ever, invite a woman who loves to talk too much into your home. Common sense. Sara had never encountered the problem, having lived
mostly with her own family and a few choice friends and colleagues. So she didn’t know. “I got this kiddy pool. For my porch. But then I thought, why don’t we set it up in your backyard. This way, there’s more room, we can all sit around while the kids have fun…” Tzipoiry’s voice trailed off. Sara was tired and edgy. Bracha Esther had gone on without her, and while Elimelech was supremely patient, she hated keeping him waiting and leaving the boys, who’d gone along for Maariv this time, not bathed and not tucked into bed. “Let’s see tomorrow,” Sara said. Tzipoiry was already running toward the mailboxes to fetch her advertisements and credit card offers. In her mind, she had a way to entice all the women in the neighborhood to sit together, under Sara’s tree, country-style. It’d be just like the good old days, only much, much better. To be continued...

The following three recipes are all wonderful. First of all, they taste great! As an added bonus, they make huge cakes and can easily be divided and frozen. So you bake once, and enjoy for a looong while thereafter! If that’s not the icing on the cake, I don’t know what is! Enjoy baking!

WHISKEY SPONGE CAKE
16 eggs, separated 3 ½ cups sugar 4 cups flour
TIPS
3 teaspoons baking powder
For the best results when making a snow, the eggs should be at room temperature, and the bowl should be completely dry. Even a drop of water can ruin the stiffness.
1 cup oil 1 ½ cups water 4 tablespoons vanilla sugar 3 tablespoons of any liqueur
If you ever run out of baking powder, for each teaspoon of baking powder, replace with 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar. When baking, always line the pan with parchment paper. For easy slicing, leave an overhang, and once the cake is cool, slightly lift the cake with the parchment paper overhang to slice, to avoid cutting through the pan.
If you thought that all sponge cakes taste the same, this one will dismiss that notion. It has a wonderfully moist and delightful flavor. This is a very large cake and freezes very well.
Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Beat the egg whites until fluffy. Slowly add the sugar and the egg yolks, beating lightly after each addition. 3. You can add the rest of the ingredients into the snow, very slowly, while beating on a low speed. 4. Line a large roaster pan with parchment paper and carefully pour the batter into it. Bake for 1 hour.

CHOCOLATE CHIP CAKE This is a delicious cake that gets cut into bars while still warm, making it an ideal grab-and-go snack. I freeze them pre-portioned and individually wrapped.
TIPS When baking, line up all the ingredients you will use on the right side of the owl, and move each to the left as you use it. That way, if you take a phone call or get distracted, you know exactly what you already put in.
4 sticks margarine 1 ½ cups sugar 1 ½ cups brown sugar
To maintain the freshness of cake, do not leave cake on the counter for longer than overnight. Rather, freeze the cake and defrost when needed - even if it’s just for a day or two.
2 tablespoons vanilla sugar 4 eggs 4 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda
If you bake two cakes at once in the oven, rotate the pans, as the cakes do not bake evenly on the two shelves. When baking just one cake, always bake it on the lower rack.
¼ teaspoon salt 1 bag chocolate chips
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. In a large bow,l cream margarine and all sugars 3. Add rest of ingredients. 4. Spread the batter over a parchment-paper-lined cookie sheet and bake for 45 minutes. 5. Let cool for about 20 minutes and then cut into bars.

Marbling Ingredients: ½ cup sugar
TIPS
½ cup cocoa
Always preheat the oven. Skipping that part really affects how the cake will turn out.
½ cup boiling water
If you prefer a moist cake top (that will taste almost like you glazed it), cover the cake with a silver foil while it is still hot. If you go for a crispier top, do not cover the cake until it is cool. You can always add a teaspoon of cream of tartar to egg whites to make a good snow. It does not have a taste and really makes those peaks stiff!
Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form, and then slowly add 1 cup sugar. Set aside. 3. In a separate bowl, mix yolk with the remaining sugar. Slowly add remaining ingredients, except mar-

’ S RIDE LET N I A R T THE As the school days wind down and the summer makes her presence felt, we end up spending a great part of our days enjoying the Great Outdoors. Having visited most of the green patches and fields in Rockland County, it is time to explore beyond the borders of New York. The beauty of these parks is that while they are in New Jersey, each is just 15-20 minutes away by car and also accessible with a short, inexpensive train ride (followed by a walk) from Suffern. (In reality, traveling to the Suffern train station can be just as far as traveling to the destination itself, depending on your location of residence, but the train ride adds a thrilling dimension to the trip for country children like ours, and is a great means of transport for those who can’t rely on a car.)
The train departs from Suffern Railroad Station on Chestnut Street about once an hour, and sometimes at shorter intervals. The Suffern Railroad Station can be reached with the following TOR Buses: 59: Corner Route 59 and Route 306 (Main Street) about every half-hour; 20 minute travel time to Suffern Station Loop 3: Leaves Spring Valley Transit Center 44 minutes after every hour and Bates Drive corner Route 59 53 minutes after every hour; arrives at Suffern Station 33 minutes after every hour. ’S R E T N I W PARK East Ramapo Avenue Mahwah, NJ The entrance to this playground’s parking lot is not marked and can be easily missed. Have your GPS take you to Apple Montessori School on 75 East Ramapo Avenue, Mahwah, NJ and the park’s entrance is right across the street. If you’re coming by train, the park can be entered right across the street from the train station.
Always having been a lovely park, Winter’s Park has recently received exciting upgrades when their playground was renovated with a nature theme, with equipment designed to resemble trees, cabins, and rocks. In addition to the separate toddler and older child play areas with slides, climbing structures, and swings which are in close proximity to each other, there are benches lining this fenced-in playground for supervising the young ones who will surely have the time of their lives. A shaded gazebo overlooks the gorgeous Winter’s Pond. Children love to feed the geese that inhabit the pond. There’s a short trail around the pond with two covered bridges that is a delight to the kids, plenty of picnic tables in several shaded areas, and an open field. You can spend hours in this beautiful park.

If you’re coming by train, walk down Erie Plaza toward W. Main Street. Make a right onto W. Main Street and then a left onto Church Street. You will see the park running along the street. Walk until the entrance to get in. The highlight of this beautiful, sprawling park is most probably the sandbox, where children are welcome to use the sand toys, kick off their shoes, and legally get their nails dirty. There are benches around the sandbox where you can watch your little ones. The large playground with a variety of areas and equipment has a medieval theme, and its castle and pirate boat equipment will definitely give your children a new experience. There’s also a three-part train car, and as a double whopper, children can watch the “real” train pass by the park! There are picnic tables in the shade and it’s a kind of place that never feels too crowded even when many people are there.

For nature lovers who enjoy untouched creation, this magnificent oasis with a meadow and small streams is for you. The walk through this freshwater wetland preserve is short and easy, and you get to see a lot. In addition to the 240-plus species of birds, the area is also known for its many butterflies, fish, and other small mammals and reptiles. True to its name, the area was a former celery farm. An easy-terrain mile-long trail loop goes around the lake, starting behind the kiosk at the parking area. There are raised platforms, foot bridges, and benches along the way.

Franklin Turnpike Allendale, NJ The park entrance is on the Franklin Turnpike, 500 feet after Cottage Place. Looks for signs with “Green Acres” and “Wildlife Sanctuary” and a small parking lot that will hold about six cars. This is the entrance to the preserve. If the parking lot is filled, park on nearby Pittis Avenue. If coming by train, from the east (northbound) side of the tracks, turn left onto Central Avenue and follow it to its end at Myrtle Avenue. Turn left on on Myrtle Avenue, and then right onto Pittis Avenue, which you should follow until its end at Franklin Turnpike. Turn right on Franklin Turnpike and continue for about 500 feet to the entrance to the Celery Farm Natural Area, on the left.
H G U O R BO PARK 98 Pine Street Waldwick, NJ If you’re coming by train, coming out of the train station, make a right on Hewson Avenue, and then another right on W. Prospect Street. Then, take the first right onto Zazzetti street, taking the stairs to cross over the train tracks. At the end, make a left on Bohnert Place, and the second right onto Hopper Street. Make a left onto Pennington Street. Walk down Pennington Street until you see the park.
Yup, that’s Borough Park, just twenty minutes away. This park has a special country charm. It features several playgrounds, a toddler area, a great playground for older children, and a back playground with metal slides and merry-go-rounds and fun equipment that will make you nostalgic and bring back childhood memories. Waldwick Borough Park also has a beautiful paved bike bath, lots of well-shaded picnic tables, and a gorgeous, gurgling stream with ducks where you can sight people pulling in their catch.

BAKING P E O R O L S B By: Ruchy Reese
It is every homemaker’s dream to be the quintessential baker, churning out impeccable pastries that look like they came from within pages of a widely acclaimed cookbook. But let’s face it, nobody’s born with a measuring spoon in her mouth, and cooking and baking are arts only learned through trial and error. While the kitchen may be an intimidating place for a newlywed who’s never cooked before, most people learn to overcome that fear and feed their families with delicious food that is uniquely theirs. Here are some baking (and a little bit of cooking) gaffes experienced by real-life women. Hold your sides as you discover that everyone is human — just like you — and capable of cooking up the biggest batch of baking bloopers!
As a teenager, I went to a neighbor’s house to bake sugar cookies. They turned out gorgeous, but when we bit into them we had a surprise. Our sugar cookies were missing sugar! My neighbor’s mother was very frugal and tried to salvage them by making a glaze for the cookies, but I was too embarrassed to stick around and taste them! My very first cake as a newly married woman: What an exciting event! I chose the easiest chocolate cake recipe that only involved mixing the ingredients in one bowl, assuming that nothing could go wrong. Well, I was wrong. It seems that gravity likes pans that are balanced halfway on the counter, because the next thing I knew — SPLAT! — my cake batter toppled into the sink. Instead of a baking activity, I was left with a cleaning activity! Yummy vanilla cake with apple filling! It tasted okay, but the texture didn’t last. Soon it turned brick-hard. I had forgotten oil! I once put in 1 1/2 cups of baking powder, instead of a 1 1/2 tablespoons, into a batch of brownies… Let’s just call my efforts “volcanic”! Coffee cake! Yum. I set out to make one, but didn’t’ realize that I was supposed to dissolve the coffee before mixing it into the batter. I tried to convince everyone that the bitter coffee granules were actually coffee-flavored sprinkles, but no one bought it…

My shvigger is a great baker, but for weeks something was off. Everything she made started tasting awful, but being the good daughter-inlaw that I am, I tried to force down whatever she gave me, and always told her that her baking was delicious. Come to find out, her regular baking soda company had switched designs, and when she went to buy a new supply, she grabbed baking powder instead, and had unknowingly been using that for weeks! I’m not a big baker, but I have my regular recipes. I once set out to make a one-bowl carrot cake that I’d made many times, but for some reason it came out very dense and dry. I had forgotten the grated carrots! Seems Mommy was right when she said, “Always work from a recipe!”
It was my first year making my mother’s Pesach brownie recipe — in a convection oven no less. My husband was so excited that he asked me to make an outrageous amount. We only had two kids, but I quadrupled the recipe and had four 9x13 cakes. Too bad it flopped. I was left with four cakes that had congealed eggs on the top, and a layer of sugar on the bottom!
I once baked a sponge cake for Pesach that went down in family history. I forgot to add in the egg whites I had beat for hours with a hand mixer and forgot the sugar as well. The cake was truly spongelike and completely inedible!
The first time I tried to make potato kugel I was only married two weeks. Big Shot that I was, I thought I didn’t need a recipe and thought I recalled that it was supposed to be one egg to every potato… Well, it turned out to be an egg kugel! Chunks of potatoes were floating in the congealed egg and looked quite unappetizing… I would have have thrown it in the garbage, but my proud husband forced me to bring it to his father’s house, where everyone “Ooohed,” and “Aaahed,” while I turned bright red in embarrassment! The day my baby was born I decided to bake challah for the first time. I ended up having to leave in the middle... Coming home two days later with a newborn, I found challah dough that was somehow dripping down the walls and cabinets and even coating the ceiling! That wasn’t a lot of fun. I once made a fancy mishloach manos: a bouquet of flowers made out of fondant-covered cupcakes. Unfortunately, the cupcakes that may have been delicious, ended up popping out of their planters one by one. They only got as far as the stairwell outside my door! I once baked together with a friend who dumped in 3/4 cup of baking powder into our cookies, instead of 3/4 teaspoon! I had quite a chore to pick it all out! Cooking isn’t my strong point, but I married a man that is a great cook. One Shabbos we were having guests, and as usual, my husband cooked everything, leaving only the eggs for me. How wrong can you go with boiling eggs, right? Wrong! Shabbos day when I cracked them open I found them to be nearly raw! I tried mixing them with mayonnaise, but that only made it worse! It looked like a pancake mix! And I had to serve it to guests!
For blo operfree ba king, flip over to the art icle on Baketiv ity and learn how to create n o -fail baked goods!
I once tried to frost a cake by using mayonnaise.
I was married roughly a month when I decided to try making challos the first time. It was a motzei Shabbos and I wanted them fresh for melaveh malkah. Being notoriously impatient (and inexperienced!) I decided that the rising time was just a suggestion. Ten minutes of rising later, I braided my challah and popped it into the oven. They looked alright, but were tiny and hard on the outside. My husband washed and sawed into one. After biting into gray mush on the inside, my husband looked at me and apologized, and then asked if he would get sick! I didn’t force him to finish.
I made Shabbos for the first time and put everything on the blech before the zman, except the pan of fish, which we like to eat cold. Come to find out, I had actually put the chicken in the fridge and the salmon on the stove! When I first got married I put up a chicken soup for Shabbos, but called my sister in confusion. “How much oil do I add?” I didn’t realize that the chicken itself adds the oil!
When I first got married I burned a cake very badly and tossed it into the trash. My husband walked in, saw the cake, and said, “Hey! A cake finally made the way I like it!” He then proceeded to pull it from the garbage and indulge… I guess nowadays when I bake non-burnt cakes, that’s the blooper in my house! My mother did everything for us as children. When I became engaged, I was terrified that I’d have to cook and clean; until that time, I didn’t even put my clothing in the laundry hamper! Even boiling eggs was a mystery to me! Luckily, I worked at a group home for special ladies, who taught me simple recipes like boiled eggs and how to make noodles!
I loved sugar as a kid. I mean, really loved sugar! I once had a huge coffee mug that I planned to fill with the sweetest tea. My mother and sister watched me prepare the tea bag and hot water, and then scoop three huge heaping spoons of “sugar” into my tea. Imagine my reaction when I drank from something that tasted like the Yam HaMelach!
I was headed to the city for Shabbos and I had made challah dough, but didn’t have time to bake it. Oh well, I thought, I’ll just bring it with me and bake it there! Rather embarrassed to carry a challah dough onto the bus, I tucked it into my coat for safekeeping. Bad idea. The warmth of the bus combined with my body heat meant the dough grew really fast and exploded out of the bag it was in… I’m not going to describe the looks I got as challah dough started pouring out of the top of my coat and sleeves… T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

By Shevy Hollander So, what is the world’s favorite cookie? The Oreo has been the best-selling cookie in the United States since it was introduced in 1912, although no one knows how it got its name. It is down to an exact science to attain the perfect balance of cream and crunch — 71 percent cookie to 29 percent cream. How do you eat a sandwich cookie? Women are more likely to twist their Oreos apart and eat them like that, whereas men tend to enjoy the complete treat.

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W
• The U.S. leads as the world’s biggest cookie-bakers and eaters. • If you are from those who make up that statistic, bear in mind that baking burns 168-348 calories an hour, so at least your eating is justified if they’re coming out of your own oven. If you buy them, well, then more care should be taken! • At the very least, don’t eat over twenty cookies in one sitting, like the 13.5% of American adults who took a survey admitted.
THE $250-COOKIE A woman who had lunch at Neiman Marcus Cafe in Dallas ordered a cookie for dessert. She loved it so much, that she asked the waitress if she could get the recipe, who replied that she could buy it for “only two-fifty.” When the credit card bill arrived, the woman was shocked to see that the bill was almost $300 dollars, when she had purchased stuff for just 30-something dollars. Turned out that they had charged her $250 for the recipe. She desperately tried to get a refund, but was denied. Enraged, she shared the recipe with everyone she knew, relatives, neighbors, and friends, in order to get her money’s worth out of the recipe and to get even with Neiman Marcus. Or so the story goes. Neiman Marcus denied the story, and nobody knows if there’s truth to it or not, but fact remains that that cookie recipe is heavenly.
The Oreo may be the world’s favorite cookie, but my personal favorite cookie, (which incidentally is tough competition for first place in cookie-favoritism in the U.S. at large), is the chocolate chip cookie — the one that was invented by accident. There are several versions to the story of its creation, and I will share the most popular one. Ruth Wakefield, who prepared food at her inn in Massachusetts, ran out of baker’s chocolate powder while baking a batch of chocolate butter cookies. In search of a substitute, she chopped a chocolate bar into bits, hoping it would melt in the oven and get incorporated into the dough. Instead of melting, the chocolate pieces
only softened, and thus was born the alltime-favorite treat we enjoy today. So what did Wakefield do with her invention? She continued to bake her chocolate crunch cookies (as they were then called), and as word about her treat spread, she started filling orders, submitting her recipe to publications, and replying to an inundation of letters requesting the recipe. Sales on Nestle’s semi-sweet chocolate, which Wakefield had used in her recipe, skyrocketed, and so Nestle and Wakefield struck a deal. Nestle got the rights to print the chocolate crunch cookie recipe on their chocolate bar packaging, and Ruth Wakefield received a lifetime supply of Nestle chocolate.
At first, Nestle sold their bars with grooves for easy chopping, even including a small chopper to break the bar into bits. A few years down the road, they started doing the work for the customers, selling chocolate “morsels” which later became chocolate chips.
Even the pickiest eaters can’t turn their nose up at this treat. Chocolate chip cookies are among the four acceptable foods even to the most picky eaters.
For me, a cookie is a grab-and-go food. It’s what I eat when I simply don’t have the time to prepare or to sit down to a regular meal. Perhaps if I’d take on the Middle Eastern manner of eating cookies, I’d develop better eating habits. There, chocolate chip cookies are topped with chocolate sauce and eaten with a knife and fork!
Half the cookies baked in American homes each year are chocolate chip cookies.
WHO STOLE THE COOKIE FROM THE COOKIE JAR? It seems the U.S. was the one who stole the idea of a cookie jar from the British biscuit jars. During the Great Depression, in the 1930s when, due to lack of funds, many housewives began baking cookies at home, they needed containers for storing them, and that is when cookie jars appeared on the U.S. scene.
THE EDIBLE PHONE In the mood of some fun, a Californian man baked cookies to look like his phone and held it in his hand at an angle to make it appear that he was talking on the phone. When he was pulled over by an officer, he asked his rehearsed, “Are eating cookies against the law?” and much to the police officer’s shock, he took a bite of
his “phone.” As funny as the story was, it was no longer a laughing matter when the officer checked his record and saw that he had a warrant for unpaid parking tickets. He had to own up and pay up — and he no longer found his joke funny.

PRIMARY SEASON SUMMATION At long last, primary season is over. The Republicans and Democrats have both (presumptively, until after the conventions) selected a nominee to run as their candidate for president in the upcoming General Elections in November. On the Republican side, as our readers well know, we have business tycoon Donald Trump, the ultimate outsider. On many issues, some of them important, he disagrees with the establishment of the Republican Party. Mr. Trump has previously acknowledged that he has supported and voted for Democrats. As the election season progresses Trump and the Republican Party are still trying to figure out how to work together, having difficulty reconciling their differences. On the other hand, the public has been very vocal of their support for Trump’s unusual and controversial views, compelling him to a completely unexpected primary win with big victories in state after state. On the Democratic side, we have

former first lady of Arkansas and the United States, US Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a bona fide Washington insider and, historically, TRUMP the first woman to ever be nominated TOTAL 1542 as candidate for president. Although she has the party’s full support, Hillary has had difficulty garnering public support. Many consider her to be standoffish and out of touch, looking down her nose at the public. Bernie Sanders, a relative nobody, came very close to defeating her with no party support at all. On both sides of the aisle, a historic amount of people came out to vote. The Republican Party counted 30.7 million votes, while the Democrats counted 30 million. This indicates both great interest and passion in the election process. And yet, notably, both candidates have negative favorable ratings in the polls. In the most recent ABC/Washington Post poll, Hillary Clinton has a 43% favorable Although Hillary Clinton currently has a dourating and a 56% unfavorable rating — a difference ble-digit lead over Donald Trump in national polls, of 13%. Donald Trump has a 31% favorable rating as we will discuss in upcoming weeks, it’s all about and a whopping 69% unfavorable rating. That is a the state victories, particularly swing states. / THE MONS E Y V IE W
It began with the Chanukah gelt my children amassed after a full week of parties and fun. They presented me with their humble sum and with eyes agog, they pleaded to be allowed to buy “something for the backyard.” I assumed that they want to add a new fruit or berry tree to our growing collection, but what they said next totally blew my mind. They were hoping to buy a beehive, full with bees — the fuzzybuzzy, stinging, nectar-sucking kind. My kids conceived a honeybee empire Decatur Avenue was yet to see. I was startled at their outlandish request, yet couldn’t help smiling inwardly. I was oh-so-proud that my children reflected my fascination with nature. Even if I wasn’t an iota as confident as my little self-proclaimed beekeepers, I warmed up to this idea quicker than was to be expected. Starting small, I ordered one hive, protective gear, and the basic gadgets needed for backyard beekeeping. It’s important to note that honey bees are not at all the same as your backyard buzzers. The common wasps you are familiar with are of neon yellow color, unlike the auburn honey bee, and do not produce edible honey. Wasps are not even considered part of the bee family. We welcomed the queen bee with a red carpet, all of my youngsters surrounding the little wooden box with gusto. They were impatient to move their winged friend to its new home. With a rare passion, they set up the hive beside our house, dreaming of licking sticky fingers

clean of honey. Of one queen came 40,000 bees. Our backyard was literally abuzz with activity as we watched our bees sucking the nectar from the various flowers my children have planted. Then came the honey harvest. With a special machine, we extracted the honey from the wooden frames wrapped in wax. We filled more ten-gallon buckets than one can consume in three years on a honey-only diet! This goes back twenty years, when neighbors were counted as family. My children filled a kiddie wagon with containers of honey and knocked on door after door to distribute heimishe honey l’kavod Rosh Hashanah. The many Yidden who came to make Birchas Alunos upon our fruit trees from which the bees gathered nectar, were happy to get their brachos back in the form of this golden delicacy. My children grew, and so did the beehive colony. As my children left for yeshivah, I found that I was left the sole caretaker of four big hives! I have always known about the bees wondrous healing capabilities, yet have never given it much thought. After considering my options, I chose to attend an Apitherapy course in the Maryville college, in Tennessee. In the year 1999, I success-
fully completed both levels of the course, and became a member of the American Apitherapy Society. Since then, I’ve applied my knowledge to heal many Yidden through bee stings. Apitherapy, aka BVT (beevenom therapy), is a safe and effective way to heal arthritis and rheumatism. It also slows down many muscle-related autoimmune diseases, such as MS. Most people would promptly decline this seemingly dangerous and barbaric treatment, yet many agree that it has helped them significantly after their first session. I’ve had a woman with severe arthritis come to me. Suffering from extreme pain and stiffness, she practically couldn’t get out of the car. It took her about twenty minutes to get inside my office. The few stings administered on each of her joints transformed her from being virtually incapacitated to being able to finally move around.
Application: I grasp the bee by its thorax with a large tweezer and place the tip of the abdomen to my patient’s skin, waiting for the stinger to come out. The sting gland of a honey bee is a very complex mechanism which actually functions after it has left the bee’s body. This allows for the stinger to bury itself
into the skin. Two sliding shafts in the gland pump the venom into the wound. The longer the sting is left in the skin, the more venom will be discharged, for up to five minutes after the bee has stung.
How does Apitherapy work? What has been discovered about bee venom is that it stimulates the adrenal glands to produce natural cortisol, a hormone that has anti-inflammatory properties. Cortisone is a drug that mimics the effect of endogenous cortisol, but in the artificial form, it has damaging side effects on the body. The collective results of many studies validates that BV stimulates the immune system through the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands. BV also stimulates the production of endorphins —the body’s natural painkiller — and immune agents, including B cells and interferon. Trying to understand the action of BVT based on the action of suppressive drugs is impossible; BVT produces its therapeutic effect not by suppressing the immune system but by stimulating it, completely contrary to the effects of many drugs. My experience with the honey bee has given me rare insight. There’s lots to learn from these fascinating creatures!

TOP TEN TIPS TO STIMULATE SPEECH Have you ever been irritated by a baby’s cry and wished he could tell you what he wants? Although babies can communicate from birth by crying, we eagerly anticipate when they will talk. But language development takes time. As infants grow, they begin to coo and laugh. By six months, they vocalize and babble, and by nine months the babbles should contain vowels and consonants. Their babbling becomes more sophisticated, with long strips of utterances, and change in the pitch. Real words emerge between twelve and eighteen months. Youngsters usually start growing their vocabulary with nouns, then modifiers, then verbs. As children grow older, their sentence structure becomes more complex, and they learn how to communicate effectively (until they become teenagers!). What are some red flags that indicate a child may need a speech evaluation? A child who is very quiet (little or no babbling), non-age appropriate utterances, small vocabulary. The following are general guidelines: • By twelve months: say a few words • By eighteen months: say 6-20 words • By two years: 50+ words • By three years: Uses 3-5 word sentences
92 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W
Do you want to increase your child’s chance of acquiring early speech? Start with these ideas. 1. Sometimes young ones don’t speak because they aren’t given the opportunity, either because their needs are anticipated before they express them, or because everyone around them is always talking. This is a simple, but prevalent fact in our community. How can you help? You can create the need for communication. For example, give your child a half a cookie to encourage asking for more. You can also give a container or toy that is difficult to open and model asking for “help.” 2. Sing songs to have fun while learning how to talk. Children naturally love music, and will pay attention to simple songs. Repetition helps vocabulary grow, so keep singing the same songs over and over again. 3. Use short and simple sentences. Long sentences can have too much information for children to process. Could you understand a full conversation in Spanish with just basic Spanish under your belt? Speaking distinctly, audibly, slowly, and simply makes it
easier for your child to catch on, and eventually mimic speech. 4. Expand on what your child says. Example: Child: “Bus.” Mother: “A bus! Bus goes beep, beep. Bye, bye bus.” This validates your child, and shows that you understand what he said. It also models a combination of words for your child to imitate. Finally, it provides more opportunities for your child to talk and respond to a speaker, and engage in the turn-taking of conversation. 5. Listen to your child’s message, rather than the way he pronounces each word. Even if you have no idea what he said, you can respond with, “Really?” or “That’s interesting.” Try to see from your toddler’s gestures and facial expressions if you can figure out what he’s trying to say. You can then give a more appropriate response. If my daughter points to the fridge, with a bottle in her hand, I ask, “Do you want more milk?” 6. Read a book to your child every day. Simple picture books work well. (You can find them in Amazing Savings for a reasonable price.) You can also point out famil-

My daughters have come to love their books so much, that every visitor is accosted with books, and the command to “Read a story.” I do see a tremendous increase in both vocabulary and concepts simply from spending a few minutes a day reading. 7. Wellspring’s speech therapists recommend a photo album with pictures of familiar items. Family members, favorite toys, foods are all good to build a beginner’s vocabulary. Want to create more excitement? Add sensory objects into the album for more fun. Try putting in a little toy, sticker, or pop stick. 8. Provide opportunity for interaction. Monsey’s multifamily dwellings are very conducive to providing plenty of neighborly company for little ones (and mommies, too!). Allow your tot to practice new words with friends. It really takes a village to raise a child, and my children’s friends have definitely boosted my children’s
vocabulary. 9. Silly situations are great for language learning. Put a sock on your hand, and see if you can elicit communication from your child. My daughter giggles when Totty puts a glove on her foot. 10. Choices, choices, choices. It’s so easy to fall into the habit of just doing things for your children. By enabling them to choose, you allow them to become more independent and practice their communication skills. Allowing your child to make decisions will also hopefully preclude tantrums. Do you have any concerns regarding your child’s speech? A speech delay often causes frustration for both parents and children. Wellspring’s speech therapists can help; give us a call.

“She’s here! Morah Chava is here!” Shouts of glee surround the window pane, followed by sounds of little feet scampering to the front door. In a happy whirlwind of freshly braided hair and peyos smelling of Dippity Do, Morah Chava is escorted to the basement classroom where Chaim takes his respective seat. With a sneak peek and a longing glance into Treasure Island, the rest of the crew scramble off to their school buses honking outside. Between decorative posters displaying sight-words, grammar rules, and shoroshim, the large wall clock shows 9:30 AM. Another exciting day is underway. Chaim is eased into a day of learning with a short talentexpression period in which he explores his love of art through drawing a picture of what he is grateful to Hashem for. As I settle the house from the morning chaos and defrost some chicken cutlets in the kitchen sink, I can hear the calm exchange of lessons taught, questions asked, and the scratch of crisp, sharpened pencils working their way across his reading workbook. I can even smell the scent of permanent markers as they sprawl mathematical equations over the whiteboard as I cut up a Crisp Lady apple and slice a piece of homemade chocolate cake, just as Chaim likes it, for snack time. At seven years old, Chaim has developed quite a taste for food, just like he has for a one-on-one environment — an environment that only homeschooling can offer here in our hometown of Monsey. Being one that is not cut out for the hubbub of a busy social school setting, Chaim has been flourishing under Morah and
I start wondering whether the ceiling will be experimented with next; when will Chaim feel the need to test the force of gravity on it? Rebbe’s exceptional devotion and loving care, and has gained quite some confidence along the way. 11:15: snack time. I find Chaim in the reading corner of the room, comfortably ensconced in his bean bag, following along in a story book, while listening to its accompanying storyteller on the CD player nearby. I drop his much deserved tray of food on his desk and go catch up on some of my own work. Later, while my eyes are fixed on a pile of laundry I’m in the middle of folding, I can’t help picking up tidbits of “magnetic force...” and “the pull of gravity...” and I find myself smiling to a pair of trousers. Chaim thrives on science lessons, and has involved the entire family in many a scientific experiment while his parents are out of eye- and earshot. I start wondering whether the ceiling will be experimented with next; when will Chaim feel the need to test the force of gravity on it? Geography comes next, and I can tell the subject change by the sound of a spinning globe. While Chaim learns his lesson, I ascend the stairs to answer the door for his rebbe. A moment later, a smiling Chaim emerges, waving Morah Chava off with wishes of, “See you tomorrow, Im Yirtzeh Hashem.” While Rebbe and Chaim go hand in hand for their afternoon stroll in the beautiful sun, I run to the kitchen to fix Chaim’s lunch for when he returns. It is 1:15 when the pair troops back in, just as I rescue a slice of bread from the toaster, and lay it comfortably next to the scrambled eggs and veggie salad. And,
of course, I stir up an extra large chocolate milk to perfection. Then it is off to class again, yet this time with rebbe at his side. It is precisely at 1:27, that my heart turns warm to the touch by chants of “Hazon es HaOlam Kulo” emanating from below. Yet, my heart goes from warm to literally melting, when the prerecorded davening of an adorable class of boys turns on, and I can hear the voices of Chaim and his rebbe following along in song. As I slide my iron across each starched shirt, I hum along to the tune of “Elokei Neshama” and in my mind I can see Chaim pointing along in his brand-new siddur, gifted to him by his rebbe. As the rest of the afternoon progresses, Chaim covers a range of kriah, shoroshim, Chumash, and Mishnayos. Then it is Parshas HaShavuah, with a dress-up skit or puppet show as a way of reliving every detail of that week’s story. By the time the clock strikes 4:00 PM and Rebbe leaves, Chaim is happy to join the rest of the family upstairs, do his homework and eat dinner. While he excitedly relates the details of his day, I silently send up a prayer of thanks for bringing our precious little boy to where he is today. For the confidence and willpower, for the contentment and courage. For Chaim is not an ordinary boy. Chaim lives with High-Functioning Autism. Play Your Cards Right A Heimishe Problem: Similar-Name Credit Ruining Is your name Moshe Braun or Malky Fried? When your name is mentioned, do people ask, “Which one? Leah’s or Sury’s daughter?” Are you one of a large family with ten cousins sharing the same first and last name? Rivky Friedman*, a woman with a common heimishe name, recently called us with the following story. Rivky has great credit and is always on top of her bills. She applied for a mortgage, being positive she’d get an instant approval. However, the mortgage broker notified her that there was a serious delinquent Sprint bill on her credit report that was damaging her credit and stopping Rivky from obtaining her dream home. She claimed she never had a contract with Sprint, and certainly never paid a bill late. How did this get onto her report? Welcome to the heimishe credit problem: mistaken name merging. Inaccuracies in credit reporting affect millions of Americans. A 2013 Federal Trade Commission study found that 1 in 5 consumers have errors on their reports. While name merging is a mistake that can happen all over, its percentages are way higher in the heimishe community where name and city location sharing are so common. The credit bureaus collect financial information about you from lenders. Any business with which you have a credit account, such as a bank, auto loan company, or mortgage provider, regularly updates the credit reporting agencies on whether or not you’re repaying your debts. Other billers, such as cell phone providers, utility companies, and medical companies won’t regularly update the credit agencies. They will only update the agencies should your account go late or seriously delin-

quent. Rivky Friedman may have never have had a Sprint bill. However, her cousin with the same name — or any other Rivky Friedman out there — might have had one. And if she paid late, that might have landed on the report of someone with the same name, instead of one with the delinquent bill. According to the National Consumer Law Center, a nonprofit advocacy group, the credit bureaus use mathematical algorithms involving a partial name match and only part of the digits of a person’s Social Security number to match a name with all the accounts they are sent. Problems arise when the credit bureau mistakenly matches one person’s overdue debt to another person with a similar name. Just recently, Chaim Rosenberg*, a newlywed, called in to GoldMine to apply for his first credit card. He was declined even for a secured card. At our advice, he contacted Experian to get a free copy of his credit report. We were shocked to read the report that there were twelve (!) accounts open, mostly heavily delinquent. After a couple of questions, the problem was found. There is another Chaim Rosenberg living in the same apartment building. The credit bureaus really had a mixup. Not only did they mix up one specific action, but his neighbor’s full report was on his name. We constantly find these problems, especially with common names. While it is less likely to happen with credit card accounts, as they usually have the full and accurate info,

Painting a room is a project that takes time and patience, but it’s a terrific opportunity to beautify your home at a fraction of the cost of hiring professionals. Paint: Most rooms have waterbased paints, as they have little or no fumes, dry quickly, clean up easily, and are resistant to cracking and yellowing. Main rooms are often painted with a smooth, non-reflective matte finish. Semi-gloss and gloss paints are often used for window and door frames, baseboards, and moldings, and in areas that require frequent cleaning, like bathrooms and kitchens. Most glossy paints used to be oilbased, but these paints have fumes, and are difficult to clean off of brushes etc. There are now water-based glossy paints called “waterborne enamels” or “waterborne alkyds.” Colors: Ceilings are usually white. Be aware that colors are darker when wet, so don’t be alarmed when you first apply the paint! How much paint? Measure the area of the walls. Subtract 20 square feet for each door and 15 square feet for each window (Unless you’ll paint the

doors the same color.) Now divide by 350 to determine how many gallons of paint to buy for each coat (count the primer as an extra coat). Calculate the ceiling separately.
Preparation: 1. If there is mold, get rid of it. First, locate the source of the mold. If there are leaking pipes, they must be repaired. Then, destroy the mold using a solution of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water or a household detergent with bleach in it. Wearing rubber gloves, scrub with a stiff bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly and let the area dry. For bathrooms and laundry rooms, use a semi-gloss paint that is mold and mildew resistant. 2. Move all furniture away from the walls. Cover with plastic sheets, old shower curtains, or tablecloths. 3. Wall Repair a) Scrape or sand any loose or flaking paint, using sandpaper or a paint scraper. b) Use a putty knife to fill small holes with spackling compound. Use sandpaper to smooth it
when dry. Since spackle shrinks as it dries, you may have to apply spackle and sand again. c) Put fabric tape over cracks. Apply a light coat of spackle over the tape. Sand lightly, and put a heavier coat of spackle over the tape. Run a putty knife over it at a 90-degree angle to smooth the spackle. 4) Clean the walls Wash off dust, dirt, cobwebs, and grease using a large sponge and soap diluted in water, especially in the kitchen, where grease and oils accumulate on the walls and ceiling* above the stove. Rinse the walls and let them dry completely before applying primer or paint. (Prepare and paint the ceiling first to prevent drips on newly cleaned or painted walls.) 5) Turn off the power to the room, and remove the cover plates from the electrical fixtures, outlets, and switches. Otherwise, put masking tape over the outlets and switch handles to keep paint off of them. Use painter’s tape or masking tape to protect any other areas you don’t want paint to get on: moldings, door knobs, window/ doorframes. Smooth the tape with a putty knife so paint can’t get underneath. If using mask-
ing tape, get good-quality tape so it will not tear. Don’t use old or dried-out tape. Loosen and remove the cover plates from light fixtures. Any fixtures that cannot be removed can be covered with a plastic bag. Remove heating/A/C vent covers. 6) Cover the floor with canvas or other cloth, taping it to the baseboards or wall with painter’s tape. Do not use plastic sheets, as spilled or dripped paint can make them slippery.
Primer A primer is a lighter coat of paint that is applied before painting the color you want for the room. Use a primer if you are painting a wall that has: 1) never been painted 2) fresh spackle 3) glossy paint on it 4) a color darker than the new color will be. If the wall has a glossy, oil-based paint on it, the new paint may not adhere to it. Before priming, wash the wall
and then roughen it with a medium to smooth grit sandpaper. Wear a medical mask while sandpapering to avoid breathing in dust. Priming the walls 1) Pour primer into the tray up to the well, without covering the angled portion of the tray where the ridges are. Dip your roller into the primer, rolling it across the tray’s ridges a few times to remove excess paint. The roller should be evenly coated. Run the roller up and down the wall, from floor to ceiling and down, overlapping each pass by half, until the wall is fully covered. Refill the roller as needed. 2) Use a paintbrush to finish areas at the edges of the walls the roller did not reach. Dip a two-inch angled brush into the primer, coating the bristles only about a third of the way down the brush. Tap the brush gently inside the can to remove excess paint and avoid dripping. 3. Clean the roller and brushes. Remove excess paint by “painting” on newspaper, or running a scraper over the bristles. Water base paints wash out easily under running water. Rollers used for water base paints can be washed in the sink. Roll back and forth in a sink of water and then rinse under running water.
Painting The primer must be dry before applying paint. 1) Use a roller to paint the large areas. Roll straight up from floor to ceiling and down, overlapping each pass by half. If you need two coats of paint, let the first coat dry before applying the second. Drying times should be listed on the paint can. 2) Use a paint brush to finish the areas the roller cannot reach. Keep brushes soft by wrapping them in cling film. Put rollers into a sealed plastic bag. 3) Removing the tape As soon as the paint is fully dry, peel it off slowly, and gently so it does not tear. Remove it within a day or so, lest it become difficult to remove. 4) Trim Trim includes window and door frames and moldings. When the walls are dry, tape the wall sections near the trim to prevent getting paint on the walls. Use brushes to apply the paint. Before leaving the room, check the bottoms of your shoes. You don’t want to track wet paint around the house! Wipe off any dripped paint on fixtures with a damp cloth, while still fresh. If necessary, scrape very gently with a blunt knife. Drips on glass can be removed with a scraper. Enjoy your “new” room!

MY TAKE ON THE CAKE “Be careful with the words you say,” my mother commented as we settled into the car. “They carry more weight than you’d ever imagine!” I secured my seat belt silently, inwardly agreeing, but choosing to not respond. ***** Wiping my hands in my apron, I sighed. Specks of powdered sugar and remnants of fondant in various pastel shades dotted the counter top. I stepped back to survey my handiwork. I didn’t like what I saw. It was as if my trusty rolling pin was mocking me. I could almost hear it whisper tauntingly, “Did you really think you could do it? Why did you even try?” Looking at the towering light-blue concoction, I had the same question. It had looked so simple, so picture-perfect and easy on the glossy pages. I had read through the explicit instructions on how to form the cake and how to cover it with fondant and outline the details with icing. I thought I’d had it down pat. Until I had tried my hand at it. The smoothly rounded ABC blocks piled on top of the two-tiered cake and the cute little teddy bear reclining against them in the picture were crooked and cracked in the actual version I had produced. Amateur baker that I was, I had jumped a couple of steps ahead of myself. Without any formal cake baking classes under my belt, I might have managed to imitate a simpler version of a baby cake but this was just completely out of my league. The project had begun early Sunday morning and carried on deep into the evening hours. It was now 10pm the night before my oldest nephew’s bris, and I stood looking at a cake that was complete, but far from perfect.
“No!” I exclaimed emphatically to no one in particular as I swept the rolling pin into the sink with a bang. “This cake will not make it to the bris!” Just then, my mother walked into the room. “Wow!” she said admiringly. “This cake looks nice!” “Not quite!” I answered, my voice coming through a bit sharper than I would have liked. “I am embarrassed of this messy, crooked thing. It doesn’t look anything like it should, and it will not be brought to the bris tomorrow!” By now, two sisters peered at my creation from
I stood looking at a cake that was complete, but far from perfect. behind my mother’s shoulder, eager to see why I was making such a fuss. Despite their cries that I was overreacting and their near-convincing comments that the cake was indeed a beauty, my teenage self cringed. The cake was not what I had imagined and I was not going to let it go on display. They “oohed” and “aahed” and marveled and admired, convinced, cajoled, pleaded and begged me to stop being so stubborn. “The cake might not be professional, but it’s cute!” “And you put so many hours into it…” “Everyone’s going to love it, and Faigy will feel so good that you put in so much effort for her baby’s simchah!” Nothing they said could change my stance. I went to bed nearly in tears, the kitchen only half cleaned up, the cake sitting calmly in the center of the counter covered in a thin layer of plastic. When I rushed into the kitchen early the next
morning, still in the midst of fixing my ponytail, I saw my mother bent a little low over the counter. “Good morning,” I said, my teeth clenching the elastic pony rubber. “Just take a look!” my mother responded, still scrutinizing my cake a bit too closely. “There are tiny little ants crawling all over your masterpiece!” Good! I thought to myself. Now I can avoid a fight. The cake wasn’t coming to the bris, and that was final. “Who cares?” I finally said. “The cake is a flop anyway.” My mother, whose pride in her daughter’s amateurish baking skills was larger than my inner critic, did seem disappointed. “It came out nice enough! After all those hours, I wanted the cake to be used. What a shame!” Seeing my smirk, she added, “Another bit of practice and you’ll get better. This is great for a beginner.” I didn’t respond and was more than happy to make my way to the car, minus the cake. And yes, I learned just how powerful our statements are. It is my fervent hope that the words I utter unleash their power in only positive ways, always.

PART TWO
MONSEY MAKEOVER
IN BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES
K E E W T X E N D E NOUNC GOAL
Clean up a neglected, littered area in Monsey. WHEN? At your convenience!
WHAT HAS TO GET DONE? Choose a public or private area in Monsey to clean up. It can be the shed in your backyard that hasn’t gotten much attention recently, your day camp field, or a shortcut that’s messy. Snap a “before” picture and then an “after” picture once you’ve cleaned it up. Send in the pictures with your names to have your accomplishment featured, and be entered into a drawing for fantastic rewards.
HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS FROM LETTER WRITERS WHO HAVE WRITTEN TO THE MONSEY VIEW: “I think the first thing that needs to be done is for people to get larger trash receptacles. There are large families living on that corridor and having more and larger receptacles would keep things looking much cleaner. People need to be sure to buy cans with tightfitting lids so that the rodents don’t come and start picking through the garbage. “Another thing that I see is that people aren’t recycling as much as they should be. If people would recycle more, there would be less trash put out and with recycling and trash pickup taking place on different days, it would minimize the problem.” (Councilwoman Brendel Logan)
“Have a shopping bag for loose litter, like freeze-pop wrappers and snack bags, hanging on the garbage house, and train children to put any garbage there.” (A Rte. 306 Resident) “Purchase big blue garbage cans for bottles and have a blue bag inside ready for recycling. Fold every box before taking it to garbage house, and once a week make a pile of all the boxes and then neatly tape them together.” (Moved to Monsey) When you direct your family members to throw the excess crumbs to the ducks (which actually might not even be legal), please remind them to first take the bread pieces out of the shopping bag. What Homebuyers Need to Know About Insurance by Ann Zeilingold No sensible car owner would drive without insurance, so it figures that no homeowner should be without insurance, either. The essential idea behind various forms of real estate insurance is to protect owners in the event of catastrophe. If something goes wrong, insurance can be the bargain of a lifetime.
WHAT KIND OF INSURANCE AND HOW MUCH? There are various forms of insurance associated with homeownership, including these major types: Title Insurance: Purchased with a one-time fee at closing, title insurance protects owners in the event the title to the property is found to be invalid. The classic example of a title claim is if the title search was completed with not finding any liens on the title, and then post-closing, it turns out that your home was part of an area that the government now deems as belonging to the a Native American tribe. All the homes within the boundaries of this new territory, would have the title revoked and returned to the rightful owners, in this case the Native Americans, who filed and won the claim. Your title insurance would then kick in and pay you for the house. Coverage includes “lender’s” policies, which protect buyers up to the mortgage value of the property, and “owner’s” coverage, which protects owners up to the purchase price. In other words, owner’s coverage protects both the mortgage amount and the value of the down payment. Your attorney will order the title insurance for you. At closing there will be a representative from the title company in attendance. They will explain the basic and any optional coverages that you can purchase. Homeowner’s insurance: This insurance provides fire, theft, and liability coverage. Homeowner’s policies are required by lenders and often cover a surprising num-

ber of items, including (in some cases) property such as jewelry, furniture, fur coats, and home office equipment. Flood insurance: Generally required in high-risk, flood-prone areas, this insurance is issued by the federal government and provides as much as $250,000 in coverage for a single-family home, plus $100,000 for contents. Since Hurricane Sandy, a new FEMA map was drawn and properties that never required flood insurance may require it today. A lender will not close on a property within a flood zone without flood insurance. Home warranties: With new homes, buyers want assurance that that the builder will be there to make repairs if something goes wrong, but what if the builder refuses to do the work or goes out of business? Home warranties bought from third parties by home builders are generally designed to provide several forms of protection: workmanship for the first year, mechanical problems such as

plumbing and wiring for the first two years, and structural defects for up to 10 years. Home warranties for existing homes are typically one-year service agreements purchased by sellers and sometimes buyers. In the event of a covered defect or breakdown, the warranty firm will step in and make the repair or cover its cost. Insurance policies and warranties have limitations and individual programs with different levels of coverage, deductibles, and costs. Discuss this optional insurance with you realtor, who will most likely be a resource for you in advising what home warranty companies are available in this area.
WHEN DO YOU GET INSURANCE? The time to obtain insurance and warranty coverage is at closing, so speak with an insurance broker prior to that point. Be sure to ask about limitations, costs, deductibles, and “endorsements” (additional forms of coverage that may be available). Some people shop according to price when it comes to insurance; after all is
there even a difference between one company or another? Eric Jaslow of State Farm Insurance in Nyack says, “Absolutely. There is a difference. There is nothing like having an insurance claim or suffering from a loss and knowing that you can call your agent at any time and get advice, and even relief.” State Farm gives their premier agents an allowance to write a check up to $5,000 in case of loss, prior to any adjusters or red tape. During Hurricane Irene, there was a fire in a COOP in Monsey, and at 1:00 am Eric was there writing a check for his client, making sure they were able to go a hotel to sleep, and to a store to purchase basic essentials. Meanwhile, other homeowners had to rely on the Red Cross that was there to help. When shopping for insurance, do your research to make sure the company has a good rating and their claims department is good.
