In Issue 59, you mention the Teterboro Airport as a nice place for airplane observation. Right next to it is the small New Jersey Airplane Museum, which although it charges admission (I think $8 for adults and $6 for children), the children loved it on Chol Hamoed. It features a short film on the history of airplane development, two rooms with displays, and the children can go inside a few old planes. From there, we went to a parking lot around the corner where the planes coming in for landing flew right over our heads every minute or two. M.D.L.

As a meticulous recycler, I was very happy to see that you covered the issues our throw-away society is creating with garbage. I wanted to share some tips and thoughts with your readers. I used to have an issue with fly-away bottles that wound up all over the streets on windy days. So I started buying big clear garbage bags in Costco. Each week, I place one into my recycling bin on my back porch and deposit used bottles there. The night before the recycling truck comes, I simply tie up the bag and put the recycling bins out.

I would like your readers to know that Minnewaska State Park is less than 30 minutes from the Highland side of the Walkway over the Hudson. Minnewaska is close to certain areas in the Catskills (15 minutes from Ellenville). We had a wonderful trip at Windham Mountains, 20 minutes from Hunter. I once read an article in which the writer wrote that he found it too tedious to “file” his garbage. While the expression made me smile, the thought behind it did not. Each time I choose to recycle something over effortlessly tossing it into the garbage can, I feel it is an opportunity for three mitzvos: 1. I’m doing my part in saving Hashem’s world and keeping the environment cleaner. 2. I am preventing baal tashchis. 3. I am making a kiddush Hashem. I feel that recycling is important, as we Yidden, with our large families should show that we create as little waste as possible. N.E.

Thank you, thank you for the cleanup campaign and the issue about garbage! Finally, a heimish publication is writing about this issue! Kudos to you. It has been eating away at me to see how derelict and dirty many parts of beautiful Monsey have become, and the wantonness of how garbage is treated. Nobody can say that frum families live in squalor, since most of us live in clean and comfortable (even if not luxurious) homes, and even have regular cleaning help. Yet the exteriors of many homes look nothing like that, but are neglected and littered. Please, it doesn’t cost much to put out a flowerpot or keep the shrubbery neat, and it costs absolutely nothing to pick up the empty potato chip bags and freeze pop wrappers off your lawn. Better yet, children should be taught the importance of not littering in the first place. You don’t let your child drop food wrappers all around your house; shouldn’t they not do it outside either? I would like to express my opinion about alternative healing. I don’t think it’s an “all” or “nothing” type of thing. I’m not discussing the halachic aspect of it, if it has any, since it is the responsibility of each individual to check in with his or her Rav. What I’m referring to is the following: an EMT would not need to be trained in Chinese medicine, neither does he need to know about EFT (emotional freedom technique), since these would not apply to what he is doing. When someone has a heart attack, gets a cut, or breaks a bone, he needs medical attention immediately! You don’t start using alternative medicine then. On the flip side, if someone is going through “emotional pain” or a nonmedical emergency, alternative medicine can have its place. Ideal would be that a medical doctor should know when to suggest trying alternative health (and some do), and anyone practicing alternative medicine should know when to tell their patients to seek a medical doctor. My cleaning lady was almost finished with her work, so I went to get the money to pay her. To my chagrin, I realized I did not have enough money in my pocketbook. I checked around the house, but was unable to find any cash. I couldn’t tell her I would pay her the next time she comes, since she does not understand English. I called my husband to see if he could bring me the money, but he was not available. I tried one neighbor, who was cashless herself. Then I tried another neighbor who didn’t answer the phone. I was really stuck. I knew the next step would have to be to call a different neighbor whom I don’t know so well. I felt uncomfortable and decided to push it off by first taking out my garbage. As I walked towards the garbage can, I saw a friend coming towards me, her wallet in her hands. “Remember that shirt that you bought for me a couple of months ago?” she asked. “I just remembered I never paid you for it.” Then she slipped the exact amount I needed into my hand and was on her way!

The Impact of Sugar on Emotional Well-being

ANXIETY No matter what you’re anxious about, there is one thing that is bound to increase your stress: refined sugar in all its forms. Some of you won’t even realize until you go off sugar just how much better you feel eating clean. People who suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, and constant worry will struggle even more if they consume junk food. Though there are a number of tactics one can use to treat anxiety, your diet will make a huge difference.

Most people know that eating too much refined sugar and other processed foods can contribute to physical ailments such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, skin conditions, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, and yeast infections, not to mention a weakened immune system. However, far less attention has been given to the impact of a high-sugar diet on our mental health and emotional well-being. Numerous studies have shown the negative effects a major sweet tooth can have on our mood, learning abilities, focus, clarity, and quality of life. In addition to inflating our waistlines, sugar and its 50-some cousins (I’ll go into more detail next week) can contribute to a number of mental health problems. Oftentimes, mothers complain that their kids are cranky and stubborn. And if those mothers tracked what their kids were eating, you wouldn’t be surprised. You know how you feel when you’re running on high-carb, sugar-laden foods? That’s right — you feel moody and irritable.

DEPRESSION Although depression can be linked to a number of different factors, including genetics, the roller coaster ride of high blood sugar (followed by a crash) may accentuate any symptoms of depression. So, if you suffer from, or are susceptible to depression, make sure to see a mental health professional. That said, what your therapist might not tell you is that you’d be better off steering clear of sugar. So please, do yourself a favor and stay away from sugar as much as possible. Many people have shared with me that they reduced their sugar intake or went off

Sugar can really affect your learning abilities and memory as well. Eating sweetened cereal for breakfast is one of the worst ways you can start off your day — and the same applies to your children. It can make you feel fatigued, drowsy, spacey, and irritable. You especially want to avoid eating sugar on an empty stomach.

times, but add a little fuel to the fire and you’ve got what I call “sugary mood swings.” You see, refined sugar directly impacts the way your brain functions. In fact, simple sugars can literally affect your thinking and decision-making abilities and your ability to communicate with others in an effective way. In fact, sugar can even trigger feelings of anger or sadness. If you feel down or aggravated more often than you would like, check your sugar intake and take action accordingly.

STRESS We all talk about stress. In fact, we tend to attribute most

of our physical and emotional complaints to stress. It’s something that people are always trying to run away from, but for some reason, it runs after us instead. When I talk about stress, I’m talking about both positive and negative occasions. Though marrying off a child can be very exciting, having a baby, making Sheva Brachos in your house, organizing an event, financial pressure, meeting deadlines (definitely one for me), or just trying to listen to your kids talking all at once can be stressful. What truly matters here is that you have the coping skills to deal with whatever comes your way. Again, there are many helpful techniques you can use to ease

stress and feel more relaxed, but eliminating sugar is one of the greatest “stress busters” there is. Limiting your sugar intake will have an enormous effect on how you and your body cope with stress. Just like with everything in life, you will only know the difference if you experience it yourself! There are mitzvos and then there are mitzvos. There are mitzvos that are common, steady, and predictable. We know that Shabbos is coming. We will certainly have to make kiddush Friday night. A man must daven all three tefillos every day. We must eat kosher food. Then there are mitzvos that come along as “limited edition” opportunities. These mitzvos pop up and then disappear, and we either grab them or we let them go. Hachnosas kallah is one example. It is a fairly common mitzvah, but each time it presents itself, it is for a limited time until that particular couple gets married. Likewise with bikur cholim. The mitzvah is sadly common, but for each choleh it is only available until that patient hopefully recovers. Other “limited edition” mitzvos are more rare. Most people do not have the opportunity to do the mitzvah of pidyon haben, for example. Only a father of a qualifying bechor is zoche to say the special bracha, “Baruch atah Hashem Elokeinu melech haolam, asher kidshanu b’mitzvosav v’tzivanu, al pidyon haben.” This is a mitzvah that I, for example, will never have the z’chus to perform. This is a bracha that I will never be zoche to say because my firstborn is a girl, and I am the mother, not the father. Then there are limited-edition mitzvos that are very rare, such as chalitzah. How

many times have we heard of this mitzvah being performed? Most of us have not. Finally, there are exceedingly rare mitzvos that almost nobody has encountered since Matan Torah. These mitzvos are precious diamonds that few are zoche to fulfill. Pinchas encountered such a mitzvah, and he did not let it slip away. The mitzvah required him to do something

We must do the right thing at all times and in all circumstances. contrary to his peaceful nature, but he did not refuse. He did not excuse himself either, waiting for someone in a position of leadership to take action. He saw the situation and he acted immediately l’shem shamayim. He ran to his great-uncle, Moshe Rabbenu, and asked, “Did you not teach us this on your descent from Har Sinai: [such a man] is punished by zealots?’” Moshe replied, “May the one who reads the letter be the one who carries it out.” (Rashi Bamidbar 25:7, quoting the Gemara Sanhedrin 82a) Thus, hav-

ing consulted da’as Torah, Pinchas was authorized to fulfill this rare mitzvah. Pinchas did not do the mitzvah for self-gain, and yet, we see in this week’s Parsha that he was richly and eternally rewarded. Hashem made a personal, private bris with Pinchas — a bris shalom. Hashem also rewarded Pinchas and all his descendants after him with a bris kehunah. Pinchas was a grandson of Aharon HaKohen through his father, but he had not been a kohen because he was born before his father was anointed kohen. The kehunah could only be transmitted to sons born after the anointment of a kohen. Now, in the z’chus of this mitzvah, Pinchas became a fullfledged kohen as well. Hashem rewards us for the mitzvos we do, and His ability to reward is beyond even our ability to imagine. It would seem impossible once the kohanim were anointed that any other man could be elevated to the status of kohen. And yet, Pinchas was elevated and made a kohen. This is even more amazing when you consider the fact that a kohen who kills another person is cut off from serving as kohen — here, Pinchas killed another man and it was for that reason that he was made a kohen. There is a powerful lesson here. We must do the right thing at all times and in all cir-

Hilchos Shabbos cumstances. The first step is to be 100% sure what the right thing is. When in doubt, consult da’as Torah. Once you know what the right thing is, then do it. Don’t think about the consequences — Hashem controls the consequences. Nothing bad can come from doing what is right. It can feel uncomfortable, but that is not a valid reason not to take the appropriate action. Do not allow embarrassment or fear to hold you back. Pinchas did not allow public opinion to sway him. Pinchas was teased and scorned for his act — witnesses accused him of taking after his mother’s idolatrous family background. This did not shake him. Furthermore, Pinchas risked his life to do this mitzvah as well. He killed the nasi of shevet Shimon in the presence of the shevet — there was a danger that the shevet would take revenge on Pinchas. This, too, did not deter him. When a person sets out to do a true mitzvah with pure motives, Hashem helps him. In fact, it says in the Gemara (Sanhedrin 82a) that Hashem performed six nisim in order that Pinchas should not only succeed in doing this mitzvah, but succeed in such a way that it was clear to everyone that he did the right thing. If we set out to do a difficult mitzvah, we should not do calculations and wonder how it will be possible to fulfill. Nobody does anything in this world on his own power. We all require siyata d’Shmaya in everything we do, as it says, “Hashem leads a person in the way he wants to go.” (Bamidbar Rabbah on Parshas Balak and Gemara Makkos 10b) May we focus ourselves on only wanting to do what is right, and in that z’chus be zocheh to do more and more mitzvos.

What is the halacha regarding doing hair and peyos on Shabbos? One of the Lamed-Tes Melachos is Gozez ‫( גוזז‬shearing). Gozez is removing anything that grows on the body of a human or any baal chai (living creature). Examples of gozez are: • Cutting hair or nails • Removing skin from the body • Removing hanging skin from one’s lips or around one’s fingernails • Removing warts, corns, or dry scabs from the body • Removing a tooth All the above is assur d’Oreisa • Dry blood is not considered as if it has grown on the body. Even so, one should make sure that removing dry blood from the body does not cause further bleeding. • It is assur to brush or comb hair on Shabbos, because according to Chazal it is certain (p’sik reisha) that one will tear out hairs that are growing on the body. It is muttar to brush girls’ hair on Shabbos with a brush that is so soft that the bristles of the brush are only able to slide over the surface of the hair and are not firm enough to sink below the outer layer of hair. It is recommended by previous poskim to designate a special brush for use on Shabbos only ( which will be unable to tear out hair). • One may use one’s hands to remove dirt from hair. One of the Lamed-Tes Melachos is ‫( הבונה‬building). Braiding hair on Shabbos is considered boneh. Therefore Chazal assured braiding hair on Shabbos. Hair spray, Dippity-Doo, and all other gels used for styling hair or

preserving a hairstyle (like krazeld peyos) is assur to use on Shabbos. According to some leading poskim, it is assur to curl peyos on Shabbos even without water. One may, however, make the peyos slightly wet and use one’s hands to arrange them neatly. One must take precautions, however, not to comb one’s fingers through the peyos. Making a part in hair or a sheitel is assur on Shabbos. It is also assur to unbraid hair on Shabbos. Unbraiding braids is considered soser (undoing) and is therefore assur on Shabbos. Braiding a sheitel on Shabbos could be oreg (weaving). Unbraiding a sheitel could be potzea (pulling apart). Even though a sheitel is not a part of the person and is not gozez, it could be considered boneh, soser, oreg, and potzea. One of the Lamed-Tes Melachos is schochet (killing) as discussed last week. Shochet also includes causing blood to be spilled from a living creature which is also mefarek (extracting one object from within a second object). It is muttar to remove splinters that are sticking out from the surface of one’s body only if one is not sure that bleeding will occur. If one knows for certain that removing the splinter will cause one to bleed, it is assur to remove it. Any splinters that are painful, such as metal, glass, or wood splinters may be removed on Shabbos even if one is certain it will bleed because it’s b’makom tza’ar (painful). One may not brush one’s teeth on Shabbos, even with a dry brush, if the gums will bleed. Some leading poskim hold that putting a wet brush into one’s mouth is always Sochet.

Stone By Chany Rosengarten In Jerusalem Stone, we left Malka’la at her wedding, a young bride about to embark on a life of her own. We meet her twelve years later, in Sun on Stone. The details in this story have been changed to protect the identity of the people herein. Near the steel gas balloons outside, the two stood for a long while. “I can’t kill a woman,” Reuven Samet said to his brother, Mendel. “Someone has to do it. She must be told.” “I have no idea why I went into this profession. Why didn’t I chose, ich veis, air conditioners or something. I’d even rather drive a tractor.” “Nu, no point delaying it,” Mendel said. He led the way into the darkened stairwell of the building where Malka’la Goldreb occupied half of the top floor. “Let her be a married woman for one moment longer,” Reuven muttered. “She deserves to know what she is.” Mendel’s hands searched the wall until they found the light switch, which he flicked on. Both rushed up the echoing flights of stairs, to make it to the top before the light turned off, plunging them once again into darkness. At the top, concealed by darkness, they knocked on both doors.

Let the neighboring woman be there for Mrs. Goldreb. Experience had shown that neighbors could support like few others. “The other door is Goldreb?” they asked, when a mother, wielding a bucket of soapy water, a sponga shmatte on her shoulder, her husband talking to her from the kitchen, came to the door. Malka’la had not yet opened. Few women did, in the Jerusalem night, when the husband was not yet home. The neighbor nodded, and they knocked on the Goldreb door again. The neighbor’s husband, emerging from the kitchen with a grain of rice still hanging from his mustache, recognized the two brothers. “Angels of death,” he said, just loudly enough for his wife to hear. She let her sponga stick fall against the wall and clutched both hands to her heart. Emboldened by the identity of Malka’la’s visitors, she squeezed by the two men on the narrow landing, and knocked once more, loudly now,

before putting her mouth to the line between the door and its frame. “Malka’la? It’s me, Sara Cohen. Open, it’s important.” They could all hear the scrape of a chair against the floor tiles. A long moment. Then all was silent again. “Malka’la?” Another two knocks. Sara tried the door. It was locked. Malka’la was home. She almost always was. But her husband wasn’t, and the children were asleep. Slowly, the key turned in the lock. Malka’la opened the door a crack. She looked radiant. A shy hue of blush strategically painted on both cheekbones illuminated her face. “Can I come in, with these two people?” Sara Cohen tried pushing the door open wider. “What do you want?” Malka’la asked. “We need to talk. We need to tell you something.” Mendel Samet said. “B’vakasha. Go ahead.” “It’s not something we can say

“Nachman?” she asked in a whisper, not daring to make it real. They nodded. She flinched. “He isn’t alive?” “Not anymore. He was niftar after Minchah.” She stumbled backward, into the apartment. Sara Cohen opened the door after her. She hesitated only for a fraction of the bat of an eye, then forged after Malka’la into the house. The small kitchen table held two cups on brown saucers, a used tea bag in each cup. There was a sugar canister between the two places, where Malka’la had sat, waiting for her husband to come home. The teakettle was still hot, yet it was turned off, waiting. The fresh scent of washed laundry floated in from the hanging line. Malka’la fell into her chair, the one that was pulled out, the one right next to the head of the table, where her husband would sit down for their nightly talk. “The levayah will be held before midnight.” She stared into the rim of his teacup, her eyes two unseeing marbles. It was almost midnight. She’d been waiting for him for a long time. She had expected him home an hour ago. She should have worried. But she didn’t. She merely waited patiently, the house clean, her face clean and open and waiting. “So we’ll bring you to the levaya.” They gave Sara a sharp, short knife, instructing her to assist Malka’la

Why was Malka’la wearing her best dress, the one she wore to market every time she had to travel to Tel Aviv to replenish supplies for her family’s sewing store? The two men turned away. “We are waiting downstairs in the van,” they said. Sara cut through the fine cotton weave of Malka’la’s dress. Her eyes filled with tears, and her knuckles shook, until she couldn’t do the job anymore, not that she had wanted to, because while it made her feel important, the first witness, she felt that with the fabric’s “tzz, tzz, tzz,” of resistance, she was the one to cut a jagged line into her neighbor’s heart. But she had to, so she cut, then tried to pull the fabric apart, but it was stubborn, so she took up the knife again, until the tear was complete, a line of nothingness that ran from her neighbor’s collarbone

The older ones have to be woken up.” They were in the back of the van now, the Jerusalem night slapping them as the van lurched through barren streets. “We can’t take the other way. It’s not safe,” they heard the men

I’m coming with you,” Sara said. Should she have said the word husband? “Shouldn’t I wake up Srulik? Moishe? Aharon?” “Maybe you should. I don’t know.” She really didn’t. Should the new yesomim be ripped out of their sleep? But it was their father’s final journey. Somebody had to know what to do.

saying in the front. The young ones were crying, perhaps from cold and fatigue. “Tatte…” “Kinderlach,” Malka’la said, “Tatte is with the Eibishter. It’s us who are still here who will miss him terribly. But Hashem is with us too.” Who was Malka’la talking to? Sara wondered. Her four-yearold, crying “Tatte” almost in his sleep? Sara felt uncomfortable next to the valiant woman confronting her loss. And she still wasn’t sure what the right thing here was. Was there always a right thing? What would her mother have done? A pat on the hand, that’s what. But not

to Malka’la, the stoic mother of six, who always gave and never took, who held down a business and a family, who ripped up old clothes and made new, beautiful ones with them, who served her husband hand and foot and was, in turn, treated like his queen. They heard the burial being announced in the streets when they passed by a car with a speaker hinged on its window. Malka’la cringed. By nature a private and dignified person, here was her tragedy, hardly absorbed, already broadcasted. How can she go through this? Sara thought. The tallis-wrapped body of the young husband, was brought out, lifted on the shoulders of his family. Malka’la, married for all of twelve years, now surrounded by her family and her children, watched. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t cry. She doesn’t know what’s coming, Sara thought, groveling at her palms, curling her upper lip deep into her mouth to prevent herself from lamenting out loud, the tears finding an easy path to the floor. REPUBLICAN CONVENTION IN CLEVELAND The Republican Convention took place over the week of July 18–21 in Cleveland, Ohio. Overall, it was considered a big success. The objectives of party conventions are to unify the party around the nominee and introduce the ticket and platform to the American people. In this case, the Republicans had a theme for each day in the vein of “Make America Great Again,” which is the Trump-Pence slogan.

Cruz, on the other hand — one of Trump’s strongest rivals — was booed off the stage at the end of his speech when Trump supporters realized that he had not come out with a direct endorsement of Trump. Thursday, July 21st: The theme was “Make America One Again.” Among the speakers were US Representative Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee; Governor Mary Fallon of Oklahoma; Reince Priebus, RNC Chairman; Ivanka Trump, daughter of Donald Trump and executive vice president of the Trump Organization; and for the final speech of the convention, Donald Trump himself. Trump’s speech was lengthy for a presidential candidate. He attacked Hillary Clinton about her record and presumed capability. He focused on safety from both terror and unrest against police. He spoke about cutting taxes and regulation to build the economy. He also veered off the typical course for a Republican candidate when it came to social issues promising funding for things like college and childcare for working mothers. In a CNN poll conducted immediately after his speech, the reaction of 57% of those polled was very positive, 18% was somewhat positive, and only 24% said it had a negative effect on them. In addition, in a CNN poll between Clinton and Trump post-convention, Trump had a 6-point convention bounce and he now leads Clinton 48%-45%. The last time a candidate had a convention bounce in a CNN poll was in the 2000-election between Bush and Gore in which both of them had 8-point postconvention bounce. So, overall, the convention was considered a success for the Trump Campaign. And on to Philadelphia we go for the Democratic convention.

THE CLINTON-KAINE TICKET On Saturday, July 23rd, Hillary Clinton announced

that she had chosen Virginia Senator Tim (Timothy Michael) Kaine as her running mate. Senator Kaine is 58 years old. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended the University of Missouri and then Harvard Law School. After graduation, he moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he practiced law, until he ran for Mayor of Richmond in 1998 and won. He served as mayor from 1998 until 2001, when he ran for lieutenant governor of Virginia and won. He was lieutenant governor from 2001 until 2006, and then governor from 2006 until 2010. He then served as chairman of the DNC from 2010 until 2012, when he ran for Senate from Virginia and won. He has been the junior US Senator of Virginia since. Senator Kaine — much like Mike Pence — is considered a safe choice for Hillary Clinton. He is quiet and steady, and agrees with her on all major issues. He has a history of working well with Republicans in the Senate, which can come in handy if they are to win the election. And, very importantly, he can bring out the vote in his home state of Virginia, a swing state, where he is very well liked.

DNC BIAS SCANDAL Several months ago, it was reported that the Democratic National Committee had their servers hacked. In recent days, some of those hacked emails have been leaked by WikiLeaks, and they do not look good for the Democratic Party. Among the 20,000 emails, there was strong evidence of the DNC colluding to help Hillary Clinton win the primaries over Bernie Sanders, including references to Bernie Sanders’ faith. A DNC employee suggested that someone ask Bernie about his religious beliefs, since he is Jewish but not at all affiliated. They thought his being an atheist would alienate religious voters, especially in the South, in states like Kentucky and West Virginia. The DNC should, obviously, be neutral until any one candidate wins the primaries and allow voters to make their choice. The fact that they took an active role in helping Hillary has enraged Sanders supporters. In response to the pressure from them, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz resigned. She was immediately hired by the Clinton Campaign, further proving her support for Hillary. The Democrats have tried to spin the leak by saying it was the Russians who released the emails in hopes of helping Donald Trump win. Donald Trump, who has been calling the system rigged throughout this election, was happy to have proof that shows that what he has been saying all along has been true.

2 cups whip cream 1 pack meringues, crumbled 2 ½ cups blueberries, divided

1 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice

1. In a blender, blend 1 cup blueberries, 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 teaspoon lemon juice. Strain mixture through a sieve, so you have a smooth puree. 2. In a large bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks form. Fold in crumbled meringues and 1 ½ cups blueberries. 3. Divide mixture between eight dessert glasses and top with a tablespoon of blueberry puree.

Tappan Zee Crane Collapse Shuts Bridge for Hours

It was just after noon on Tuesday, July 19th, when the unthinkable happened: A 250-foot boom being used to erect the new Tappan Zee Bridge fell, landing on the roadway of the existing bridge and bringing traffic to a complete standstill for hours. With just minor injuries sustained, Governor Andrew Cuomo described the crash as a miracle. “If you had to say to me that a boom could fall across the bridge and not hit anybody, I wouldn’t have believed it,” Cuomo told reporters after a Tuesday press conference. A 26-year-old Jewish woman from Spring Valley, who was on her way home from a doctor’s appointment in Westchester in an ambulette was among those stuck on the bridge. The woman, who can only breathe with the help of a ventilator, was faced with a life-threatening situation as the life-sustaining equipment came perilously close to losing power as its battery ran down. A paramedic from Rockland Mobile Care was dispatched to the scene, making her way through traffic and the toppled crane, reaching the woman with a fully charged ventilator just moments before the patient’s ventilator failed. Motorists were diverted off the bridge by way of the center median, and the northbound lanes of the bridge were reopened shortly after 5 PM, with two of the southbound lanes restored later Tuesday evening. The seventh and final lane of the bridge was declared safe and ready for traffic late Shabbos afternoon. Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the crane crash, although a spokesperson for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 137 in Westchester said that he was convinced that operator error played no part in the crane collapse.

STAGE II WATER EMERGENCY DECLARED IN ROCKLAND COUNTY County Executive Ed Day announced mandatory water conservation measures to be enacted immediately on Thursday, July 21st. The restrictions come as a result of unusually hot and dry weather over the past few weeks, with rainfall totals coming in at 36 percent below average from March through June. Properties ending in even numbers are permitted to water only on Tuesdays and Fridays, while those ending in odd numbers can water only on Mondays and Thursdays. On those days when watering is allowed, residents can operate automatic sprinkler systems between 2 AM and 6 AM and can irrigate by hose or manual sprinklers between 5 PM and 9 PM. Additional restrictions include: • No washing of paved non-public surfaces, including driveways, patios, garages, parking areas, patios and sidewalks. • Cars, automobiles, trucks, and trailers, except emergency vehicles, can only be washed by commercial car washes. • Water will be served at area restaurants only by diner request. • All fountains, waterfalls, and reflecting pools that use non-recycled water must be turned off.

• All water leaks must be repaired within 48 hours. Residents who have put down lawns or new planting between June 21st and July 21st can apply for variances to the watering restrictions at the Rockland County Department of Health, and no new plantings are to be put in the ground at this time. Residents are also asked to conserve water within their homes by using low-flow shower heads and toilets, running only full loads in the dishwasher and washing machines, and to refrain from using toilets to dispose of tissues.

HEAT WAVE HITS NEW YORK The summer’s first heat wave swept the area, sending residents searching for ways to stay cool. Temperatures topped the 90-degree mark on Thursday, Friday, Shabbos, Sunday, and Monday, with the combined heat and humidity prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for the Hudson Valley,

as heat index values soared to the 100-degree mark. Residents were urged to drink plenty of water and to seek the shelter of air-conditioned areas, with warnings issued for those at risk for heat-related health issues, including the elderly and those who work outside.

Relax as you explore bike paths and gardens and let the children have fun in the climbing structures, and in the fake-beach sand play area, which is open only on Sundays.

If you choose to take the ferry from the Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 6, leave some time for the children to enjoy this unbelievable park. There’s no playground that a kid doesn’t enjoy, but there’s definitely no kid who won’t enjoy this selection of novel play areas, which include a huge sand area, a carousel, a great selection of swings, a slide mountain, and a marsh garden.

For most of the 20th century, the Staten Island Ferry was famed as the biggest bargain in New York City. It charged the same one-nickel fare as the New York City Subway but the ferry fare remained a nickel even when the subway fare increased to 10 cents in 1948. On August 4, 1975, the nickel fare ended and the charge became 25 cents for a round trip, the quarter being collected in one direction only. The round trip increased to 50 cents in 1990, but the fare was eliminated altogether in 1997. It is now a free service, but riders must disembark at each terminal and reenter through the terminal building for a round trip. Each ride takes about 25 minutes. While the ferries no longer transport motor vehicles (passengers would take their cars along to NYC!), they do transport bicycles.

Man has long been fascinated by the beauty of water and enchanted by its paradoxical nature of being able to support life with its aquatic offerings, and alternatively, snuff life out within its depth. The inability to breathe underwater has left man an outsider looking in for many long years, while the mysteries of the deep remained hermetically sealed under thousands of gallons of saltwater â&#x20AC;&#x201D; making our kind forever curious about what exists below the surface. In fact, humankind has been so driven to discover the offerings of the watery world, that men have been possessed with the unrelenting desire to overcome oxygenbased limitations in order to enable maritime exploration. The first successful submarine was rumored to have been invented in 1620, with improvements in design happening during the following four centuries. Even before this time, man had attempted to conquer the deep by creating large kettles called â&#x20AC;&#x153;diving bellsâ&#x20AC;? that were made to be negatively buoyant, meaning that despite be-

ing full of air, were not able to float. These diving bells could descend straight through the water — bringing along a pocket of oxygen with them. Divers were then able to descend further than ever before, knowing that a gulp of air was waiting for them underneath the bell. Reaching even farther back in time, we discover that ancient civilizations also had primitive methods for breathing under water. The Assyrians, for instance, fashioned sculptures that depicted divers bringing animal skins full of air with them on underwater expeditions. Other historical attempts at enabling swimmers to breathe in water involved the use of hollowed out sticks. These were prototypes for the common snorkel, now able to be purchased in any store that sells swim gear. The problem with the snorkel, however, is that it can only be used in shallow water, requiring divers to approach close to the surface and suck in oxygen through the tube in order to breathe. Both ancient and modern forms of snorkels were unable to be made with extra-long tubing, due to the fact that water pressure more than a couple feet deep makes this method of breathing impossible for even the strongest set of lungs. As the centuries slipped by, man attempted time and again to enable humans to breathe underwater, but the various methods inevitably resulted in failure, or at best, only partial success. Only in 1943 did this tremendous feat become seamlessly possible, allowing man to finally be safely inside the ocean, looking out. Frenchmen Émile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau teamed up to create the very first Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, also known as SCUBA. There are several forms of scuba diving, all of which center around the oxygen cylinders that divers usually carry strapped to their backs. A “regulator” is the mouthpiece that connects the diver to the cylinder and allows him to both breathe in fresh air and expel used air. In addition to these vital components are other equipment frequently used by divers. A Buoyancy Compensator Device (BCD) is a backpack-like contraption that holds the oxygen cylinders and can be inflated and deflated to change the buoyancy levels of the diver. This, in turn, affects the depth one is able to reach. Some BCDs come equipped with weightholding pockets that also help a diver descend into the water, though divers sometimes prefer to wear a weighted belt instead. You’ll also find that divers dress in wetsuits made from a thin type of material specially manufactured to contain tiny pockets of air in order to preserve the wearer’s body heat. For added warmth, wetsuits also trap a layer of water near the diver’s skin, which is then heated by the body’s temperature. Wetsuits come in various thicknesses, with only a simple change of mere millimeters needed to allow divers to keep warm in temperatures that can range from above 72° to below 42°. They also wear flippers to propel themselves forward in the water. With all of these great inventions, however, humankind can rarely venture lower than 150 feet in depth without being enclosed in a submarine or submersible vehicle. One reason for this is nitrogen narcosis, a dangerous condition caused by a diver’s exposure to certain gases that exist in highly pressured environments. Narcosis sets in at about 100 feet, and is often characterised by a diver doing silly things, like sharing his oxygen with passing fish. When other divers notice the “drunken” behavior of a peer, the situation can be easily resolved by heading to more shallow waters. The world record for deep-sea diving was recently set by an Egyptian diver who trained for over four years to prepare his body to handle the effects of a 1,000-foot trip into the depths of the ocean. This however, is not the norm.

The truth is that most of us will never dive at all, but we can still benefit from the beautiful pictures that divers have captured and shared with us. And in case you’re still curious about the creatures of the deep, the Gemara tells us that everything in the ocean has a counterpart on land, save for the chulda — a type of rodent. So, if you’re still curious but don’t want to get wet, just take a look at the world around us, and know that we’ve got one extra creation up here on land! And, best of all, we can breathe!

Chesed Comes Full Circle at the Barber Shop By Itta Shayowitz The summer finally ended, and it was a week before school started for the kids. I love my kids and we have an amazing time together over the summer vacation, but I also love sending them off to school in the morning and having a few quiet hours to myself and my napping little one. There’s nothing quite like sitting at my kitchen table, coffee mug in hand, while listening to the sounds of complete silence. So like all good mothers, I had my list of things that needed to get done before the first day of school. This included seforim, school supplies, shoes, and haircuts. Thus, we found ourselves in the car headed to the barber shop on Route 59. My neighbors and I were told that this is the best barber in town, and for my son’s first day of yeshiva, only the best would do. I found parking right in front of the barber shop. (Gotta love Monsey! No more searching for parking!) Once inside, it didn’t take long to realize we were not the only ones who thought of going to the barber four days before the start of school. There

was a considerable line. So, we took our seats and patiently waited for our turn. The barber told jokes to the crowd and kept us all entertained while we waited, and his assistant was handing out lollipops to all the little kids. While I’m usually careful about my kids eating snacks at this time of day, I turned a blind eye, and they were in barber-heaven. After about a half-hour of waiting, our turn finally came. I grasped my son’s hand as he climbed into the huge, black leather barber chair, while the barber whisked out a cape and snapped it shut under my son’s chin. S u d denly, t h e door

opened and everyone looked up. In walked a Yeshivishe yungerman, and with him an elderly gentleman in a wool coat and a fedora. The barber ran over to give him a warm welcome and a handshake. “Welcome Rabbi,” he said. “How are you? We haven’t seen you in a while. So glad you’re here!” The young man smiled. “Hi Avi,” he said. “It’s been too long. Do you think you’ll be able to give my father a haircut today? He’s been too weak to come lately, but I finally got him to agree, so here we are!” That’s when Avi the barber turned to me. “Would you mind if I do the Rabbi’s haircut first?” “Of course not,” I replied. I lifted my little tzaddik’l off the barber’s chair and once again, found seats in the waiting room. Figuring that this is a

Most of the time we don’t get to see the end of the story or witness the rewards of our good deeds. But once in a while, we catch a glimpse. great opportunity for a chinuch lesson, I explained to my son that we always let an older person go first. While the Rabbi was getting his haircut, his son slipped out of the shop for a few moments. When he returned, he had a CD case in his hand. “Here you go, tzaddik,” he said to my son. “You did a big mitzvah today.” Huh? I looked up in surprise. “Thank you,” I managed to stammer. Then I looked down at the CD. A picture of a green giant graced the cover. The title read, “The Adventure of Berel and the Vomitz, by Rebbe Hill.” Rebbe Hill! Later that afternoon I visited my in-laws with the kids (as good daughters-in-law do). While schmoozing, I told my mother-in-law what had happened at the barber shop earlier and how the famous Rebbe Hill gave my son his new CD as a gift! When I wound up the story, my mother-in-law stared at me, her eyes wide. “Ma, is everything okay?” I asked. “You look like you just saw a ghost!” “I can’t believe it!” she said. “I just can’t believe it!” And then she told me her story. “When we first moved to Monsey about 30 years ago, I was shopping for groceries. I was navigating a shopping cart and handling a bunch of leibedig little kids. I was waiting in line to pay, my children getting more and more impatient. Finally, the gentleman in front of me turns around and tells me to go ahead of him. At first I refused, since he only had a few items, and I had shopped about a month’s worth of groceries. But he in-

sisted, so I went ahead. When I was finished paying, I turned to thank the kind stranger. And I asked him for his name. He told me he was ‘Steven Hill.’” Wow. Every once in awhile you feel the Yad Hashem reach out from Shamayim and touch you. This was one of those times. It seemed to me that we had come full circle. I had repaid the kindness that was done to my mother-in-law 30 years ago. I had let Steven Hill go before me in line just like he did for my mother-in-law all those years ago. Hashem works in mysterious and wonderful ways. Most of the time we don’t get to see the end of the story or witness the rewards of our good deeds. But once in a while, we catch a glimpse. For me, personally, this was a true turning point. I felt it was as if Hashem was smiling down on me, telling me I was in the right place. Moving is a scary thing to do and there were times that I was filled with doubts about whether we had done the right thing. After all, we had left so much behind in Brooklyn. Yes, we got a bracha from my husband’s rebbe, but there was still that small nagging doubt in my mind. All that changed on the day that I took my tzaddik to the barber for a haircut. That was the day I knew without a doubt that Monsey is where we were meant to be. Ever since then, I have never once secondguessed our decision to move. So for now, and possibly until Moshiach comes, Monsey is the best place for my family and me.

Who were the Jews on the Titanic? There were the famous ones; the iconic names that come to mind whenever the Titanic is mentioned. Ben Guggenheim, the wealthiest Jew aboard the Titanic makes it towards the top of the list. Worth $95 million, he was the second richest passenger to sail on the Titanic (coming in first was John Jacob Astor), and sadly, is most famous for the way he died. In his refusal to board one of the lifeboats as long as there were still women and children to be saved, he gave his life, contrary to what many of the first-class male passengers were doing — saving their own lives first. After aiding the rescue of women and children, he sent a message to his wife with a passenger who ended up surviving, saying, “Tell my wife…. I played the game out straight to the end. No woman shall be left aboard this ship because Ben Guggenheim was a coward.” Even more famous was the Straus couple. Millionaire Isidor Straus ranked just below Guggenheim, as the second richest Jewish passenger (and the third richest passenger), at $50 million. Coowner of Macy’s Department Store, he was a leading philanthropist and also enjoyed political fame. When disaster struck, and it came to boarding the lifeboats, Ida Straus refused to leave her husband’s side, insisting on staying aboard the sinking vessel. People tried to convince Isidor to go along with Ida, as there was extra room in one of the lifeboats that were about to leave. But he stayed firm, saying that he will not leave until the other men were saved. The story of this elderly couple touched many, and songs were composed and articles written about them. These millionaires may have

made headlines for years following the disaster, but they were far from the only Jews on that fateful journeys. Proof that many of our brothers were aboard on that fateful cruise is the fact that there was a kosher kitchen on the Titanic, and a kosher chef, Charles Kennel, was tasked with filling the Jewish passengers’ culinary needs. The menu of the White Star Line ships had written across the bottom: “Kosher meat supplied and cooked for Jewish passengers as desired,” and the kosher utensils were marked for meat or milk — as was seen on a plate which was saved from the Olympic, Titanic’s sister ship. According to the number of Jewish-sounding names on the passenger list, it is presumed that there were over 100 Yidden on the Titanic. The Jewish passengers were dispersed among the first class, second class, and steerage. Unfortunately, many of the first-class Jewish passengers had assimilated into a culture which clashed with Yiddishkeit, and some of them had intermarried. One Jewish passenger in first class made headlines much later, after the Titanic wreck was discovered in 1985. Adolphe Saalfeld was a perfume merchant who boarded the Titanic back in 1912 with 65 vials of perfume samples, hoping to establish a perfume business in America. He ended up surviving, but thought that his perfumes had not. In an expedition in 1990, 88 years after that fateful night, among the artifacts that were dredged up, Saalfeld’s perfume case was found with 62 vials intact, and they were still emitting a scent after all this time. There was a question to whom the artifacts, like these perfumes, belonged. Are they now under the ownership of the finders or of the families of the survivors? In 2004, a treaty was signed by the U.S., Canada (closest to the Titanic wreckage), France, and Britain, that all artifacts would be the property of R.M.S. Titanic Inc., and they would not be returned

to the original owners or their families. The majority of the Jewish passengers aboard the Titanic were in third class. Most of the Jews in steerage were leaving England to America during the wave of immigration between 1880-1914. They boarded the Titanic with thoughts of freedom, of golden opportunities — and so many of them did not survive. There was a Yid employed by the company to look after the Jewish steerage passengers and make sure they were as comfortable as everyone else, and there was kosher food available for them. As Jews throughout the ages tend to develop a relationship when meeting a fellow Jew in travel, the frum passengers in steerage davened together, although it is unlikely that they had a Sefer Torah on board. They ate together, slept together in the “Jewish section,” and their common language was Yiddish. In steerage, one didn’t get a room, he got a bed. The Jews ended up gravitating to each other in their own little corner, sharing their space with fellow Jewish passengers. One third-class Jewish passenger was Leah Aks, whose then infant son, Frank, came to be known as the “Titanic baby,” or the “youngest survivor.” Rabbi Paysach Krohn recounts in his book, Reflections of the Maggid, how a maniacal man, hysterical that he wouldn’t be saved, tore Frank out of Leah’s arms and flung him overboard. He landed in one of the lifeboats, although Leah did not know that. Grieving, she was forced onto a lifeboat. Two days later, she suddenly saw him in the hands of a woman, who refused to release

him, claiming that this baby was meant for her. She didn’t have children, and this infant just fell into her hands while she was in the lifeboat. The captain of the Carpathia was brought into the fray, and upon seeing that the child had had a bris milah, ruled that Frank be returned to his mother. For days following the sinking, ships combed the area for bodies, and many were buried in cemeteries in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rabbi Jacob Walter was in charge of identifying the Jewish victims, who were buried in the Jewish Baron de Hirsch cemetery of Halifax. There are ten identical headstones with the fateful date of the sinking standing until today, although two of the ten were later, after burial, identified as non-Jews. Over 200 songs were written to commemorate the Titanic and those who perished in the icy waters. But none were as heartfelt as the special Keil Moleh Rachamim that Chazan Yossele Rosenblatt composed for the neshamos of Titanic casualties. He recorded it, as well as the Yiddish song “Der Naser Keiver; Churban Titanik” composed by lyricist Shlomo Shmulevitz, and donated all the rights of the song to a fund to help families of the victims. It raised $150,000 for the bereaved families.

The most talked about shaila in that era was the famous teshuva by Rav Yaakov Hakohen Meskin, who addressed the question of an agunah whose husband, Shimon Meisner, had boarded the Titanic and had not returned. In what later became a famous responsum with the Ponevezer Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Yitzchok Yaakov Rabinowitz, they tried to find a heter for this young wife with three young children to remarry, despite the lack of proof that he was niftar, and also to determine if Kaddish may be recited for the man. Based on a thorough analysis which argued all possible issues and angles, and feeling that the government was trustworthy in having done everything possible to find any survivor, Rav Rabinowitz paskened that she can be deemed a widow who is allowed to remarry.

THE PROMISE I grabbed the mail out of the mailbox as fast as I could, ran back up the stairs two at a time, into the house, and dumped the mail onto the counter. “It feels like one hundred degrees out there!” I said to no one in particular, as I raced to the air conditioner in the attempt to cool down. Now let’s see what we’ve got. “Hey, what’s this?” It was a regular, white, size-10 envelope, addressed to Family Katz. The return address, barely discernable, was in my dear married daughter’s unmistakable jumbled handwriting. I love my daughter dearly, but neatness is just not one of her strong points. I had just put down the phone with her two minutes ago. How come she hadn’t mentioned anything to me? Oh, It’s probably a kid’s art project that she wants me to have nachas from. Holding the envelope upside down, I quickly ripped it open with the point of the nearest pen I found. It was empty, besides for one dime which rolled right out of the slit I’d just made, then gracefully fell to the floor, rolled round and round in a little jig, and then landed right at my feet expectantly. My lucky day! I scanned the envelope for more money, but it was empty. Why would my daughter send me ten cents in the mail? Was she playing some joke? Or maybe I should be dan l’kaf z’chus that she had wanted to put in some hundred dollar bills, but had mistakenly left them on her table, leaving me with only a dime? I checked the envelope again, turned it over, checked a third time. Then I examined the coin, in the hope that it would provide some clues. My curiosity was growing by the minute. When I realized that no clues were forthcoming, I resigned myself to calling the source of the mystery for an explanation. The phone beat me. It was my mechateneste, my daughter’s shvigger, calling to invite me to her son’s

If you’re an avid reader like I am, most likely you’ve encountered words like “dinghy” and “schooner,” and although you know these words pertain to seafaring vehicles, most likely you don’t know too much about the what makes one boat different from the next. So let’s dive right into the ocean of info and change that! Although there are hundreds of types of boats, we’ll focus on just a few.

A dinghy is a small boat that that often is carried or towed by larger vessels, usually used in case of emergency. Dinghies are often rowboats, but they can also be powered by a motor.

Also commonly used for emergencies is the whale boat. These boats are created to be very open for ease of access, and have the ability to move both forward and backward equally well. The US Coast Guard has been using these since 1791, and require whale boats to include emergency provisions such as food and water, a compass, signaling devices, and life jackets.

A kayak is a small, slim boat with a cockpit to hold a sitting paddler. Originally created by the Inuit for hunting expeditions, the kayak is made to hold between one and three people, move quickly through the water, and can be used on either rivers or the open ocean.

Pontoon boats are flatbottomed boats that rest upon floatation devices called “pontoons.” These boats can be relatively cheap when compared to other boats, due to the fact they can be designed with simple items such as PVC piping, nylon, and plastic — though more expensive metals can also be used in the design. These boats are powered by motor, paddles, or oars.

A sailboat can be any type of smaller boat that is propelled by a cloth that captures the wind and sends it sailing.

Float tubes are created to make fishers feel like a duck. While wearing scuba pants and swim flippers, fisher sit in this U-shaped boat and gently paddle their way around the lake while taking in their catch.

A motorboat is a boat that is powered by either an internal engine, or an “outboard” engine that is submersed in water. Motorboats can vary tremendously in size, starting from the standard four-meter long speedboats to huge luxury yachts (the name given for leisure motorboats) that are even capable of crossing oceans. The word “schooner” has always left me captivated, wondering what it means and how to say it. Well, I’m curious no more! “Schooner” is pronounced with a “K” sound, like in “school,” and is used in reference to a large ship with two or more masts (the poles that hold up sails). Each mast contains a “fore” and “aft” sail, and the mast is as long as the length of the ship! Similar to the schooner is the full-rigged ship, which uses square sails and has at least three masts. These vessels are the pirate ships of days long past.

Icebreaker ships are specially designed vessels that are capable of safely clearing a frozen path of ice for non-specialized ships that follow behind it. To tackle the ice, the ship has to have three special qualifications: it has to have super-strong hull (body), a shape capable of breaking apart ice, and enough power to push through the ice.

Dugouts are used around the world in less developed and impoverished areas. Created by simply digging out the insides of a log, these boats are one of the oldest forms of seaand river-faring vessels.

Amphibious vehicles are made to travel on both land and water safely. If you’ve been on a Duck Boat (see Excursions in issue 57) you can proudly say you’ve ridden on one of these.

Ice boats are a daring combination of sails and skates, having been used in history for transportation of goods, but now used mainly for sport. Frequently Asked Questions Is reflexology a permanent solution to a difficulty, or does it require consistent maintenance? Part of what determines how long results last is if the person re-aggravates the situation, such as repeated strain in the neck. Results can last a short time or permanently.

Fun Fact: How does reflexology differ from massage? Conventionally, people use the term massage very loosely to include other touch therapies that have nothing to do with standard massage techniques. Whereas massage therapy reconditions the nervous system by focusing on “faulty” muscles which impact the nerves, reflexology works with reflexes through the nervous system (by triggering nerve endings and not the muscular system). Additionally, massage deals with touch all over the body, with emphasis on muscular, circulatory, and lymphatic systems. Reflexology, on the other hand, may help the muscular, circulatory and lymphatic systems, but it’s focus is more internal (read: organs). Is reflexology a regulated profession? Yes, each state in the United States has strict requirements for a reflexologist to earn accreditation. However, before seeing a reflexologist, it is important to ask for his/her credentials, and to ascertain that the reflexologist is accredited from a reputable institute. Some people take short courses which don’t offer accreditation (and are primarily used by course participants as a DIY method). Are there any health conditions for which reflexology should be avoided? Though reflexology has been proven to be completely safe, some conditions warrant extra caution. It’s inadvisable after a surgical removal of a tumor, wart, etc. Care must also be given to areas with open sores, burns, wounds, gout, and infections. Someone with active blood clots, too, should be cautious about reflexology. For postoperative patients, the International Institute of Reflexology recommends that reflexologists work lightly on those clients, and for a short time.

Released in 1969, the book Helping Yourself with Reflexology was the first book published by a major publisher in the United States, with sales of over 500,000 copies!

Not only is a high credit score vital in getting a low mortgage rate, it influences whether you can get a home loan at all. Buyers below a certain threshold, typically a FICO score of 620, have a better chance of striking oil in their bathtub than securing a mortgage. It’s possible, but it will require some digging.

HOW DO CREDIT SCORES AFFECT YOUR MORTGAGE? • Borrowers with high credit scores tend to get lower interest rates on mortgages than borrowers with low credit scores. • A credit score of 740 or higher qualifies for the best interest rates from most lenders. • It is difficult, but possible, to get a mortgage with a credit score under 620. • Depending on the lender, the difference between the best and worst rates can vary by a full percentage point and a half

Lenders prefer borrowers with low balances, a long history of on-time payments and a mix of credit utilization, like a car loan and a couple of revolving accounts, such as credit cards. “Lenders look at several variables on the credit report: outstanding debt, the outstanding debt relative to the total available debt, the length of the credit history, and the pursuit of new credit — how many inquiries are on your report,” says Joseph Shapiro, underwriting manager at FM Home Loans, a direct mortgage lender in New York.

HOW TO CLEAN UP YOUR CREDIT Ideally, you’ll check your credit

report a year or so before buying a home. That gives you time to correct errors in the report and change ways you use credit to improve your score. To get a sense of where your credit stands, request your free annual credit report. Scour everything from the way your name is spelled and previous addresses to checking that each and every account is yours and reported correctly. If an account has been closed, make sure that is accurately reported. “Sometimes people will quickly glance over their information and that’s it. But you should take the time and look at the account numbers,” says Steve Katz, senior marketing communications executive for TransUnion.

If everything is correct, pay off balances and let time do the rest. The credit reporting agencies do charge a fee if you want to know your credit score. Lenders look at all three scores and use the middle one, Katz says.

WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO If you’re buying a home soon, try not to apply for new credit. Though it’s not always avoidable, for instance, if you need a car loan or college financing, you should resist opening several new lines of credit in a short time. Multiple new accounts can decrease your credit score. Keep your credit card balances below 30% the high credit allowed and never pay any bill late.
