the letter, I kept my son home until B”H he was cleared up, and by doing so, hopefully prevented other kids from contracting it. I’ve met many people whose kids (or they themselves) have suffered from MRSA, but I still have unanswered questions regarding this subject. I was wondering if anyone out there would be able to clue me in on the following: 1. How is MRSA transmitted from one person to another? By simple touch? Body fluids? Only through the pus? 2. Is MRSA viral or bacterial? 3. Is it possible to wait it out without using antibiotics, or must I run to the doctor immediately to prevent the risk of infection and cellulitis? 4. How can I prevent it from recurring? 5. Is it true that only those who are prone to it can get it, while others (including those exposed to it), will never contract it? 6. How can I be sure that a MRSA bubble isn’t becoming dangerously infected? Is there a certain number of days I need to wait, or are there any signs that will let me know when the worst is over? I’d be grateful if someone is able to enlighten me!

IT’S NEW FOR ME TOO

Many thanks to The Monsey View and to Itta Shayawitz for the My Move to Monsey serial. As a newcomer to the area, I can definitely relate to some of her amusing (and sometimes frustrating) encounters. Living in Monsey is great, but like all new things, takes some getting used to. Uncompromising education. Uncompromising environment.

As told to: Basya Lev

I went to the shoe store to buy weekday shoes for my son. I found a style I liked, but they didn’t have the right size or color. The salesperson said he could order it. A week later, I picked up the shoes. My son tried them on at home, but the fit wasn’t good. I planned to return the shoes right away, but I was making a chasuna and before I knew it, three weeks had passed by. I knew that the store might not accept the return after so long, but I felt I should try. I walked into the store and the salesperson was trying a shoe on a boy’s foot. The shoe did not fit and the salesperson said he could order it. I looked closer and saw that it was the same shoe I wanted to return. I mentioned to them that I happened to be returning the exact same shoe the man was going to order. They tried on the shoe and it fit the boy beautifully. The mother was very excited, because her son’s shoes were badly torn and now he didn’t need to wait the week it would take to arrive. I was happy because I was able to get my money back. We were all amazed by the timing that could only have been orchestrated by Hashem!

How Your Beliefs Can Keep You from Losing Weight If you are yo-yo dieting and unsure of why you can’t seem to follow a food plan and stick to it, you may be coping with negative beliefs about losing weight, maintaining your weight, or simply being healthy. Now, you might be wondering how your beliefs have anything to do with the food plan you want to follow. How are your limiting beliefs associated with overeating? Well, here is an example for you: Suppose you believe that living in a nicer home than your friends and relatives will cause your loved ones to envy you, and that their opinion of you can cause bad things to happen to you. If you were superstitious in that way, would you still want to live in a mansion? You might wish to live more comfortably, but your fear of others’ envy will never let it happen. That means you won’t even consider taking any kind of action steps toward living in your dream home. You may get a promotion or a raise, but you won’t go after those opportunities because you fear that if you can afford a luxurious home, it won’t bring you any good. When it comes to overeating and sticking to a plan, you might have one or twenty beliefs that keep you from taking the right steps toward your goal. You will keep on wishing, trying, and dreaming of losing that extra weight, but nothing will happen unless you are willing to change your beliefs. Here are a few very limiting beliefs that are common among people who want to be thin, but are going around in circles, losing and gaining back the weight they’ve lost via yo-yo dieting. While you read these beliefs, see if you identify with any or all of them. Be honest here.

My client proudly admits that “thought before food” is the smart way to go.

• In the past, I always gained back my weight. • No matter how hard I try, I always fail. • If I lose too much weight, my friends will be jealous of me. • If I lose weight, people may make an ayin hara. • I can drop some weight, but it won’t last for very long. • I am afraid to deprive myself of the foods I like. • My genes make me overweight, so I have no chance. • Even if I end up reaching my goal, I know something will happen and I will gain everything back. • I’ve been this weight for years, and this is just the way my body is. • My metabolism is slow. • I lose weight slowly, and I run out of patience very quickly. • I’ve dieted hundreds of times, so why should I try again? • I just can’t do it — it’s too hard. • I won’t be able to eat my favorite foods ever again. • Now isn’t a good time to start eating healthy. • I don’t have time to lose weight.

WHERE DO YOUR BELIEFS COME FROM? You were not born with certain beliefs. Yes, you were born with certain temperaments and a certain disposition, but the vast majority of your beliefs are the product of your environment, and they come from the people around you. Our parents, siblings, teachers, and friends all have a great impact on our brain, especially when we are young and vulnerable. You probably heard people around you complaining about how hard it is to

lose weight, and you picked this up as a little girl. Perhaps this mentality has stuck with you over the years, and you’ve carried it with you into adulthood. Your grandmother, mother, or sister might have remarked how it’s impossible to maintain weight, and lo and behold, your actions began reflecting your beliefs. Imagine that somehow, in some way, our memory can be erased. We wouldn’t have any limiting beliefs or self-defeating thoughts, and all of our failures and mistakes would disappear from our brain. Our assump-

tions about our shortcomings would no longer exist. In other words, we would have a spotless past! Ultimately, your past really doesn’t matter — you can have a spotless future. Stay tuned for next week’s article on how dealing with your negative beliefs can yield longterm success.

Parshas

Eikev By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum Sossover Rebbitzin

I once heard a joke that serves as a powerful moshul. Yossi Klein was in dire financial straits. He had a bill for $11,725 that was due in two days, but he had no way to pay it. He had already borrowed as much as possible from family, friends, and gemachs, but it was not enough. Trembling and panicking, he began to daven with great fervor. “Hashem, I beg you — please help me!” he cried. “There is no way through natural means that I could come up with so much money in such a short time. I am limited, but You are not! All the money in the world is in Your hands. You could save me from this crisis. Please, have rachmanus on me. Please send me the money I need!” At that precise moment, the telephone rang, and Yossi picked up. “Hello?” “Hello, is this Mr. Klein?” asked the woman on the phone. “Yes it is, how can I help you?” he replied. “Do you remember purchasing a ticket in the Ultimate Tzedakah Split-the-Pot Raffle last month?” she asked. “Yes,” replied Yossi. “Mazel tov!” exclaimed the woman. “You are the grand winner! You can pick up your check tomorrow at our main office in town.” “That’s amazing!” cried Yossi.

42 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W

“How much did I win?” “$11,725,” responded the caller. Yossi realized that this was precisely the amount he needed. He thanked the woman and hung up the phone before turning back to Hashem. “Hashem, never mind!” Yossi said. “I no longer need Your help — I just received exactly

Sforno explains that we were being tested in whether or not we would still keep the Torah faithfully if all of our physical needs were provided. the amount I need. Thanks anyway!” It says in this week’s Parsha, “Hama’achilcha mon bamidbar… ul’ma’an nasosecha… — [Hashem] Who fed you in the desert… in order to test you.” (Devarim 8:16) One might wonder, what was the test in receiving mann? Hashem sustained us completely in the desert. Not only did we not need to spend our time sewing or mending our clothes, we did not need to worry about finding food to feed our fami-

lies. Even more, we did not even have to spend our time cooking meals. Everything was done for us. What exactly was the test? Sforno explains that we were being tested in whether or not we would still keep the Torah faithfully if all of our physical needs were provided. Many people wish they had more time to spend learning or davening, but when they do have free time, they use that time to “unwind” from their hectic schedules. There is validity to this, but there are also limitations. If a man would suddenly receive a windfall of money such that he would never need to work again, would he immediately run off to kollel? If all of the responsibilities regarding clothing and food were taken care of, would a woman spend her time doing chesed? I once heard a story about the Chofetz Chaim that illustrates the challenge of serving Hashem when one’s needs are provided. A wealthy man came to visit the Chofetz Chaim, and saw the dire poverty of the talmidim who dedicated their lives to learning Torah. The man turned to the Chofetz Chaim with a very generous proposal. He wanted to provide a stipend to each of the talmidim so that they would no longer have to struggle with parnassa, and could focus all of their energy into their learn-

ing. The Chofetz Chaim was aghast. He vehemently turned down the offer, saying that he does not want his yeshiva to be destroyed. Clearly, the Chofetz Chaim understood that wealth is indeed a difficult nisayon. I once heard that Hashem does not grant people wealth because He does not want to make them into people who do not keep their word. Many people promise Hashem that if He would shower wealth upon them, they would give generously to tzedakah. Hashem knows us better than that. When people make such promises, they usually are sincere. However, when wealth arrives, it brings its own temptations and challenges. Once a person has so much money in his hands, it becomes far more difficult to give it away. In the case of Yossi Klein in the joke above, his tefillos were sincere and from the heart. He realized that only Hashem could rescue him from his financial crisis. However, as soon as the money was in his hands, he failed his very first test: to recognize that everything we have comes from Hashem. It becomes even harder when we have worked hard to earn the money. We give credit to our talents and skills. But Who gave us these talents and skills? And Who decided that we should be matzliach? Many intelligent, talented people struggle with parnassa. The first step to using Hashem’s gifts correctly is recognizing that they come from Him. After that, we have to make sure we use them appropriately. It says in Mesilas Yesharim that everything in life is a test. Everything. Poverty is a test, but so is wealth. Ramapo Ranked 14th Safest Town in State Yet another reason to rejoice, Monsey dwellers. Both the Town of Ramapo and the Village of Suffern got high marks in a report released by an insurance company listing the safest places to live in New York State. The numbers were based on the likelihood of a violent crime, including robbery, aggravated as-

sault, and property crimes such as burglary, arson, and car theft. The Town of Ramapo came in at number 14, with 0.65 violent crimes per one thousand residents and 6.5 property crimes per every thousand residents. The Village of Suffern came in in tenth place, placing slightly higher for violent crimes, but lower in property crimes.

Other Hudson Valley towns that made the top 25 included Shawangunk, in Ulster County, which ranked fifth, the Town of Stony Point in Northern Rockland County, which placed 17th, and the Town of Blooming Grove, just west of Kiryas Joel, which came in at number 22. (Rockland Daily Voice)

Governor Issues Lightning Warnings After Lightning Strikes Five in Dutchess County protection from sun and rain but not lightning. Because they do not have plumbing or wiring, they offer no means for conducting the current to the ground in the event of a lightning strike. • If you cannot get to a shelter, stay far away from trees, as lightning that hits a tree can travel through the ground. • Avoids swimming or boating in a lightning storm, because the current can travel through water. • Stay out of puddles during a lightning storm even if you are wearing rubber boots. • Avoid the use of telephones and any corded electrical devices. • Stay away from windows,

doors, and porches, which can provide a path for a lightning strike to enter a home. • Refrain from using any plumbing, including washing hands or dishes, showering or doing laundry, during a lightning storm. • In case of a lightning strike, seek immediate medical attention. Five people sitting or standing near a park bench in Poughkeepsie’s Mansion Square Park were struck by lightning on August 12th. Lightning is believed to have hit a tree, sending electrical current through the benches and ground nearby. In addition to the one fatality, four others were injured and sent to area hospitals.

Road and rear-ended the marked police cruiser that was stopped in traffic. The police officer was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Ramapo Valley Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The distracted driver, who was not injured, was ticketed for use of a portable electronic device while operating a vehicle and following too close.

Lightning and thunder go hand in hand with summer storms, and after the death of a 50-year-old man in Poughkeepsie, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a statement advising New Yorkers to take proper precautions during lightning storms. • Seek shelter if a lightning storm seems imminent, preferably in a house, a substantial building, or an all-metal, hard-topped vehicle. • Watch out for darkening skies and lightning flashes, and listen for thunder, all of which can signal an impending lightning storm. • Avoid small open shelters, such as those at roadside picnic areas and schoolyards, which offer

Cell Phones + Driving = Bad Idea!

A 30-year-old Monsey woman was issued two tickets after accidentally hitting a police car while using her cell phone. Police said that the woman was reading an article on her phone while she was driving on Forshay

ELECTION NEWS

By Ruchel Lebovits

THE CLINTON FOUNDATION AND ITS CONNECTION TO THE CLINTON STATE DEPARTMENT

An activist organization called the Judicial Watch uncovered information raising red flags on the conduct of the Clinton State Department. From email conversations and phone calls, in one case over 140 phone messages were left by a Clinton Foundation executive to a Clinton aide at the State Department. It seemed that the staff at the Clinton Foundation was in contact with the State Department staff, arranging meetings between Clinton in her capacity as Secretary of State and major donors of the Clinton Foundation on a regular basis. Although this information may not be enough to launch a criminal investigation, it strongly suggests that some donors to the Clinton Foundation may have seen their gifts as means to buy access. Moreover, they may have been right! And if Clinton were to become president, the relationships she has with members of foreign governments developed through her work with, and their contributions to, the Clinton Foundation will be tainted. As secretary, she has pledged to keep her official world and her family’s foundation separate, but clearly she failed to do so. Can voters assume that this will be carried over to the White House?

TRUMP’S CAMPAIGN RESHUFFLE On Wednesday, August 17th, Donald Trump hired Stephen Bannon, a senior executive from Breitbart News, as the new chief executive of his campaign. He also promoted Kellyanne Conway, formerly a campaign adviser, to campaign manager. Trump had been dealing with a few weeks of negative campaign news and was looking to get some new blood into his campaign. In addition, his campaign manager Paul Manafort tendered his resignation on Friday, August 19th, following scrutiny over his work in Ukraine on behalf of pro-Russian figures, including the country’s former president, Viktor Yanukovych.

Manafort was seen as someone who tried to temper Trump’s rhetoric and build bridges with the Republican Party, but it seemed like his advice had been largely ignored by Trump. Bannon, on the other hand, is much more anti-establishment and has no experience in running a campaign. Despite assumptions that hiring Bannon would cause Trump to increase his harsh rhetoric, he actually took the opposite approach, saying, “Sometimes, in the heat of debate and while speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing,” Trump told a crowd in Charlotte, North Carolina. “I have done that, and I regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues.” He seemed generally more toned down, even floating the idea that he might re-think his immigration policy. He said his policy “…has to be very firm. But we want to come up with something fair.” That is far removed from the “We’ll build a wall,” rhetoric he had been using until now. In addition, he visited Louisiana, a state that has been hit with massive flooding, over the weekend, delivering supplies and touring the flood damaged region. Overall, it definitely seemed like the campaign had gotten the message they were losing the momentum and were aiming to fix it.

Like a whirlwind of ever-moving activity, thousands of bochurim converge upon the homes of their youth, seeking to refuel their shteiging tanks with a fresh infusion of down time. But what does “down time” mean for these young men during the freedom weeks of bein hazmanim? With my oldest boy being only newly initiated into the world of dangling peyos and swaying tzitzis, bochurim and bein hazmanim still remain that mysterious book yet unread. As I watch swarms of behatted men-in-the-making fill Monsey’s street with that unmistakable thread of vibrant energy, I wonder: How does a mother keep her big boys busy? I decided to pose that question to parents both older and wiser than myself, in the hopes that when my children reach the point of post bar mitzvah I’ll know what to do. (Or at least fake it really well.) I present to you my gathered kernels of wisdom.

Keep ‘Em Learning All across the board, proud Jewish mothers share that although their boys are home and officially out from under the yeshiva’s watchful eye, their bochurim are still actively involved in learning. After all, the Torah doesn’t get put on hold just because the boys have returned home. For some teens, however, the lure of the Gemara may be less strong during bein hazmanim. In Eretz Yisroel, I am told, most neighborhoods have instituted a yeshiva system that mimics kollel. Each bachur that shows up to learn is rewarded with a monetary stipend. Likewise, one mother tells me that her sons sign up for the Dirshu Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program, which also offers monetary rewards. Together with a chavrusa, the boys are guided through the verdant field of Jewish law by her husband. In general, incentives and bein hazmanim seem to go hand-in-hand, and many parents and programs offer rewards such as trips and activities in exchange for a regular shiur or an established chavrusa. Incentives can include money, a special meal, activity, or prize.

mentioned as having been enjoyed by certain bochurim. And shhhh! some boys even relish whipping up delicacies for Yom Tov beside their mothers in the kitchen.

Keep ‘Em... Shopping? When all else fails and your bochur is bored beyond belief, send him, list in hand, to tackle his own errands at the local men’s store. Most bochurim (if they live away from home) will need to restock on basic dry goods to some extent come bein hazmanim. Items like socks, shirts, and pants can be easily allocated to your bachur’s TO DO list, allowing him to work on his life skills while giving him an out-ofthe-house activity. Similarly, if he’ll be going in any trips and will require gear, let him use the opportunity to express his independence and capabilities by hunting the needed items down. Keep in mind though, that being comfortable with the store’s environment is a prerequisite to sending your yeshiva bochur shopping!

Give ‘Em Away!

Keep ‘Em Going Most bochurim need time to exercise their physical limbs after their spiritual muscles have been stretched, and many parents take their boys into the woods to the tackle the trails and work up a good sweat. Biking is also an activity that can take up a large portion of the day while burning excess energy. Private swimming pools can be rented by the day or the hour and provide a healthy outlet for kosher down time as well. Other creative solutions for energy-release during bein hazmanim keep the boys moving within the comfort of their own homes. Some mothers save their to-do list for the time when tinker-loving bochurim can tackle the household repairs. From screwing on loose cabinet doors to wielding a paint bucket and roller, most bochurim find an immense measure of satisfaction in fix-it projects. “He felt so good with himself after he finished painting the living room,” gushes one mother. “It’s a sense of accomplishment, and a truly empowering feeling.” Likewise, woodworking kits, Sukkah crafts, and other artistic building projects often work well to stimulate the mind and body. Even gardening was

One of the most popular times for matchmakers to pair people up is bein hazmanim, of course. For boys of marriageable age, filling time during bein hazmanim may not be an issue. In fact, there might just be enough excitement to keep the whole family busy, IYH! Even if you’re not ready to “give away” your son to a new family through engagement, he’ll be the none-the-worse-for-wear by giving away a part of himself through volunteering instead. Some boys fill their Thursday evenings by joining Tomchei Shabbos to package food for families in need. Chesed opportunities abound, if one only knows where to look. Whatever your bochur’s bein hazmanim plans include, just keep ‘em busy and everyone will be happy!

While a well-kept hat might last for five years or more, that can only be expected if you invest the proper time and effort into keeping it in tip-top top hat shape. Here’s some tips from Ferster Hats: DON’T LET YOUR HAT GET TOSSED ABOUT. During the summer months especially, people come into the store every day to repress and fix their hats. For some reason, those hot summer days encourage people to just toss their hats onto the seat or the floor of the car, and once there, they get stepped on and rolled around. PUT YOUR HAT ON A FLAT SURFACE. If you really don’t have patience to box your hat while traveling, choose a clear spot on the floor of the car; the contours of the seat will misshape the hat. PROTECT YOUR HAT WITH THE RIGHT BOX. Any box is better than no box, but let’s face it: the cardboard box that comes with your hat is less sturdy than a good travel box. Sometimes they tear, or get squished with the hat inside. If you want to offer your hat the best chance at protection, opt for a sturdy plastic hat box. Even when at home, keep your hat in the box; don’t just leave it lying on the dining room table. KEEP IT FRESH. Try to brush your hat every week, or at least every two weeks to save yourself time and money. Brush even more frequently if you are in a dusty environment. Once the dust becomes set in, you’ll need to bring it in for a good cleaning, and there’s usually a charge for that. USE THE HOOKS! The hooks in shuls and yeshivos were created for a purpose. Your hat is definitely more safe hanging than resting on the table next to someone’s coffee… BRING IT IN FOR A CHECKUP. If your hat seems damaged beyond repair, bring it in and we’ll take a peek. We might just be able to salvage it.

CHAPTER 5

Sun on

Stone By Chany Rosengarten Recap: Malka’la feels forced to either give up her children to the orphanage or travel to America and collect funds. But she can’t afford the fare to America, and she can’t bear to give up her children. She spoke, and her father laid his eyes on the creases of her face. Her mother kept busy at the counter, but she knew her mother’s ears were stiff with her desire to hear. “So you want to be lost to us,” her father said, asked, when she was done, oceans of unshed pain crashing against the shore of his eyes. She had to say it. How could she probe at the scab that never healed with uncouth hands, but it was so clearly almost said, she could sniff it in with simple breaths, and she had to bring it out in the open so that she could deal with it, disprove it. “I’m not Avrumy. I’m not Avrumy. I’m never going to be… him.” “Avrumy isn’t Avrumy either. It’s his memories that made him so. And you… have many memories of pain imprinted on your soul. He didn’t choose it. We don’t choose these things. We make small choices in the face of big fears. Like this one, like going

to America when you have been wronged.” “I will never move even one step to the right or the left of our sacred mesorah. I won’t stay there. I would never live there. I have children here! I’ll come back just as soon as I earn enough.” Her mother paused, mid-scrub, and turned around to peruse her face. “You’ve managed to survive many months alone. You’ve been stoic and fine ever since Nachman… passed. It’s only losing the investment that made you need to run away, to change things by force. This is just another gut thrust. Stay strong. Don’t do something rash.” “I would never do what Avrumy did to you. I will never look like him, talk like him, stay away. I won’t. America is only a plane ride away, and people have been helped with huge sums. When the biggest problem I’m facing is money, how can I not go to America?” “Change happens… with ease,

by leaning into the punches, listening to the pain like you would to a child.” “I don’t have the ability to generate parnassa. I need to be there for my children. I just can’t do it all.” “She’s right. She’s right.” Her mother, who had until now been silent and busy, spoke up. “Motherly duties are soft; they occupy every minute.” “Of course,” her father said. “We’re forgetting that after all the work she does every day, she doesn’t even have a husband at the end of the day.” Her mother sighed swiftly and turned back to the counter. “How can I forget?” her father said. “Is there one day, one day, that I don’t wet the stones of the Kosel and say, ‘Ribbono shel Olam, You took him, and now he’s gone, but You still need to take care of my daughter’?”’ “Tatte,” Malka said, into the negotiations her parents seemed to be having. “I daven for you, Malka’la.”

I will put my children into the orphanage, and there they will be fed. ¼ cup salted and roasted sunflower seeds DRESSING: ½ c. mayonnaise

1 T. lemon juice 1 garlic, crushed 2 T. apricot jam ¼ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. white pepper ½ tsp. poppy seeds

1. Blend first six dressing ingredients. Add the poppy seeds by hand, mixing gently. 2. Pour lettuce into large bowl or flat plate. 3. GUACAMOLE

Guacamole is always best if made closest to serving as possible.

1 ripe avocado 1 plum tomato 1 hard-boiled egg 1 T. chopped purple onion ½ clove garlic, crushed 1 T. olive oil 1 tsp. lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste 1. Cut vegetables and eggs into chunks. Mix with rest of ingredients. 2. Shabbos alert: it is prohibited to crush garlic on Shabbos. Either use frozen garlic or using a knife, cut into larger pieces than you would ordinarily cut prior to serving.

SEASONED CHEF: Ripe avocados are dark brown on the outside and soft to the touch. To ripen hard ones, place in a dark cabinet along with other fruits. Bananas and avocados ripen nicely together.

STUFFED SMOKED FISH Learn to make this classic Shalosh Seudos fare like the professionals.

1 large smoked fish Mayonnaise 1. Lay fish on working surface. Lift the top part slightly and pull out the bones, trying to get them out as intact as possible. Once you remove all the bones, scoop out the flesh and place in a bowl. Put on disposable gloves. Mash fish with your hands, checking for any remaining bones. Mix with mayonnaise, starting with a half a cup for a large fish, adding more if necessary. 2. Serve over a bed of lettuce. Feel free to spruce up your fish with one or more of the following add-ins: Diced purple onion | Diced white onion | Sliced olives | Diced colored peppers

The Grass Is Always Greener in Monsey By Itta Shayowitz There’s a famous saying that “The grass is always greener on the other side.” Well, in our case this was true. Literally. I’m slightly embarrassed to admit it, but when we first moved to Monsey, we kind of neglected our yard for a little while. It wasn’t on purpose. Believe me, we are not that fond of ticks. We were simply so busy unpacking and settling in that we had completely forgotten about it. So one fine day, as I was pulling out of my driveway, there was a knock on my car window. I jumped in shock and looked out the car window to see a man wearing a green polo shirt. I rolled down the window. “Hi, are you new here?” he asked. Somewhat taken aback, I managed to stammer, “Umm… yes.” His response was, “I knew you were new to the neighborhood based on how unkempt your front lawn looks.” Ouch, that hurt. He then went on to politely explain that there’s a law in our town which states that the grass on your property mustn’t grow beyond a

certain height, and if not maintained could cause you to get hit with a hefty fine. Yikes! Later that night when I told my husband about my encounter, he scrambled in search of a gardener who would cut our grass first thing the next morning. Unfortunately, one gardener after another turned us down. No one wanted the job. Our grass had grown so high that they were afraid it would break their machinery! Just to give you an idea of what it looked like, my fiveyear-old could have easily gotten lost in there. After much cajoling (and a very generous tip) we

convinced one gardener to cut our grass. Two days later, it was transformed into a plush green carpet, just as it was meant to be. But after that, we felt rather guilty about the whole grassgrown-too-tall fiasco, and how we had neglected our responsibility as homeowners — even if it was for just for a short while. This summer we decided to take extra good care of our lawn. We’d turn on the sprinkler system, fertilize the grass, and smother it with attention. The whole nine yards. So every day we turned on the sprinkler full blast until Mr. Wallace, our neighbor, would come out and complain that we were using too much water. “Don’t you know there’s a water shortage in Rockland County?” I bought pesticides from Home Depot and generously sprayed our property. We told

This is why we moved to Monsey, after all. For moments like those. the gardener to come every other week to make sure the bushes were nicely trimmed. And we primped and pampered our lawn like first time parents who pamper that first baby. This, after all, was our first lawn and we wanted to do it right and show the world (or at least our neighbors) that we were indeed capable of caring for our grass. After a few weeks of treating our lawn so royally, our efforts bore fruit (well not fruit, but definitely grass). It looked like a velvety rich carpet, so vividly green that even the gardener admitted he had never seen such grass in his entire life. We had the nicest lawn in the entire neighborhood! All was merry and well — until December 15th. I will never forget that day, because that’s the day the water bill came in the mail. Well, let’s just say it wasn’t a pretty sight. I could have bought myself two mink coats for that money! The grass is just part of the story. There’s also the gutters, the spring cleanup, the leaf blowing, and more. When I first heard someone say the word “gutters,” I honestly thought they were speaking about the street, not the top of my house! We simply didn’t have these things in the city and were clueless. But after all is said and done, we still feel like it’s all worth it. The big backyard for the kids to play in was part of the dream of living here in Monsey. The kids love playing on our swing set! It keeps them busy for hours, so I love it, too! Even having the gutter cleaned out became a fun activ-

ity for the kids. When we had it cleaned for the first time, they sat at the window and watched the mud and leaves fall from the roof. Imagine! It was raining mud! A child’s dream come true! Or at least a boy’s dream come true. And I’ll never forget our first autumn in Monsey. I’ll admit that I’m a little OCD, so when I saw the leaves starting to fall to the ground on that first day of autumn, I came out in the morning to sweep my driveway clean. Ha! Silly me! By the time the afternoon rolled around there was a fresh bed of leaves in the exact same spot I had swept! But what fun my children had! Menachem and Tziporah would come off the school bus and before even putting down their knapsacks, they were jumping, and rolling, and having a grand old time in the piles of leaves. Seeing the smiles on their faces just melted my heart, and I suddenly didn’t care about the mess or the dirt. The most important thing was that the children were happy. This is why we moved to Monsey, after all. For moments like those. Pure, sweet, innocent moments filled with visions of little children playing in the beautiful fall foliage to their hearts content. I’d run inside and grab my camera out of my purse. “Look at the camera and say leaves!” I’d call. And I’d snap away. Those pictures now grace the walls of our living room. They are a constant reminder to me that sometimes you need to let go of the idea of perfectionism and just live in the moment.

MOST COMMON HATS There are seven main types of hats typically worn in the heimishe community:

The BEND DOWN is the most popular make of hat, most commonly worn in the Litvish and Sephardic communities, though some chasidim wear it as well.

By: Ruchy Reese

HEIMISHE HATS Jewish males have covered their heads in many forms throughout the centuries, with the designs varying according to the time and location, as well as level of learnedness, and age. There have been styles crafted from leather and others from cloth. Perhaps the most commonly seen type of hats in our current day and location is that of the top hat crafted from fur. Even within this category, however, there is so much to learn…

CRAFTING THE HAT Satmar is most commonly associated with the “SHTAUFEN” hat and the FLAT “BIBER” hat.

The HIGH “BIBER” hat is the most widespread chasidishe hat worn by many in Pupa, Vizhnitz, Skver, Bobov, Belz, and more.

Tops hats are made mostly made with beaver fur and fur from wild hares.

Each hat passes through 240 craftsmen during its making.

It takes five weeks to create one hat.

Though made of the same fur, different styles of hat are processed differently, resulting in varying textures.

The fur is washed many times to compressed it to just the right texture.

Finer furs typically are made into Shabbos hats, and coarser furs are crafted for weekday use.

99% of hats currently worn in the Heimishe community are black, though colored hats were once commonly worn as well. The chasidus of Gur has their own unique style of hat called… you guessed it: the GUR HAT.

BEND UPS are often sported by Stoliner chasidim, though many others wear them as well.

The HOMBURG is considered the classiest of top hats.

THE PERFECT FIT A milliner is a person who makes and sells hats, and is your best friend when finding that perfect fit.

Even within each general style there are choices between velour and suede, and various brim options to choose from.

Milliners keep up with the times by monitoring the changes in people’s preferences in regards to brim width and crown height, which change as the years pass.

Though a person’s head shape stays roughly the same, the size of his head changes throughout life.

FUN FACTS A 1911 invention attempted to make hat-wearing more comfortable by including a fan inside the upper part of the hat, causing air to circulate. Unfortunately, the invention never took off, due to the fact that hat wearing went out of style among the umos haolam — and for the Yidden, well, obviously there was that little issue of muktzeh…

President Kennedy was sworn into office without a hat — the first president to ever do so. After that, hat wearing began to decline. By the early 1980s, only Yidden and a small handful of others still wore hats.

Fedoras were originally crafted as women’s hats. Throughout the years, however, they fell out of favor with women and became part of the man’s domain.

Respectable gentlemen were known to tip their hats at a respectful 10-degree angle in times gone by.

During one era, top hats were collapsible, enabling the wearer to compactly tuck away his hat when not wearing it.

When the first top hat appeared in 1797, it caused an uproar. Passersby were so distraught at seeing the “tall structure having a shining luster calculated to frighten timid people,” that they ran in fear. Women fainted, children cried, and an errand boy even suffered a broken arm. The wearer was taken to court!

Top hats used to be really, really tall. Nowadays, the styles have dropped to roughly half of the height they once were.

Q&A WITH FERSTER HATS QUESTION: IF A HAT IS LEFT IN THE RAIN, CAN IT BE FIXED? ANSWER: It depends on the quality of the hat and the intensity of the rain. It takes a lot, a lot of work to fix a damaged hat, and you have to know exactly what to do. We have state-of-the-art equipment that can fix most of of the damage people cause to their hats, but to be honest, if caught in a strong rain, we might be able to reshape it, but it will never be as stiff as before. QUESTION: HOW LONG SHOULD A HAT TYPICALLY LAST? ANSWER: If you take good care of your hat, it should last between three and five years. T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

How to Keep Your Oral Health Intact • Eat a healthy diet with limited sugar intake. • Make sure you get the proper vitamins and nutrients. This includes vitamin K2, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B, C, and D. Probiotics are good too. • Proper oral health, including sea-salt mouth rinses, oil pulling (see sidebar) and tooth brushing. • Use a tongue scraper, a U-shaped wire with rubber grips used to scrape the surface of the tongue from residual bacteria. • Flossing • Gargle your mouth with sea salt to treat and/or prevent most tooth and gum issues. Real sea salt contains a lot of trace minerals, many of which your teeth need to stay strong.

Homemade Toothpaste Since most toothpastes do still include fluoride, claiming that harm is non-existent in small doses, it is important to look for toothpastes which don’t have fluoride as an ingredient. You can either find one in health food stores, or try making your own mixture: • 1/2 cup coconut oil • 2-3 Tablespoons of baking soda • 15-20 drops of peppermint or cinnamon essential oil • 2 small packets of stevia powder (optional) Melt coconut oil in room temperature or on low flame, and add other ingredients, mixing well. Keep in glass jar or airtight container. Scrape small amount onto toothbrush and use as toothpaste. Try this: If you’re dealing with gingivitis or another oral infection, blend

garlic and turmeric into a paste and apply like toothpaste. They are both ripe with antibacterial properties, and turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory agent.

Oil Pulling If you’re anything like me, oil pulling is one of those phrases which scare you off simply because of its part ambiguous, part distasteful name. It is, in fact, simply the method of replacing mouthwash with oil as a means of rinsing one’s teeth. This method has been used as a folk remedy long before toothbrushes and toothpaste became an integral part of Western society. Swishing oil around the mouth traps bacteria, which is then removed from the mouth along with the oil. Simply put a tablespoon of oil into your mouth and swish it around for 5-20 minutes. Then, spit it out and rinse mouth with water, floss, and brush teeth (with fluoride-free toothpaste). The oil rinse reduces the biofilm — or plaque — which clings to the teeth, as well as bacteria in the mouth. A buildup of plaque can cause gum inflammation, gingivitis, cavities, yellowed teeth, tooth decay, and other dental health issues. Coconut oil is especially popular for this, because it contains lauric acid, a proven antimicrobial which kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. and has been shown to whiten teeth, freshen up breath, prevent tooth decay, and lead to oral health improvements Studies have shown oil pulling to be at least as effective as powerful mouthwash — without the side effects of its chemicals.

Fun Fact: Baking soda is a wonderful natural product for polishing teeth, removing stains, and freshening breath.

have banned or rejected water fluoridation for the most part, due to safety concerns.) The Institute of Medicine states that anyone over 8 years of age can safely ingest 10 milligrams of fluoride each day. Ten milligrams, however, is the same dose that the IOM concedes can cause clinical signs of skeletal fluorosis within just 10 to 20 years of exposure!

Fun Fact: Many herbs can be incorporated into your brushing routine that have positive effects on your teeth and gums as they can build, pull out toxins, and nourish.

Additionally, fluoride comes with a warning to call the poison control center immediately if ingested, so overexposure is definitely not safe. How much exposure is defined as overexposure? Since experts are not 100% in agreement, and there is no risk to being underexposed, I’d prefer that to overexposure. Figures from the World Health Organization show the same declines in tooth decay that have been experienced in fluoridated countries since the 1960s have occurred equally in non-fluoridated countries. Scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Headquarters Office in Washington D.C. stated that water fluoridation is an unreasonable risk.

Fun Fact: In a study at University of California Davis triclosan, a chemical used in antibacterial soaps and products and toothpaste, was recently found to affect proper heart function, and FDA is reevaluating its safety.

FOUR MEN IN HATS

Shown above are four men buried up to their necks in the ground. They cannot move, so they can only look forward. Between A and B is a brick wall which cannot be seen through. They all know that among themselves they are wearing four hats — two black and two white — but they do not know what color they are wearing. Each of them knows where the other three men are buried. They are not allowed to talk to each other and have 10 minutes to figure it out. After one minute, one of them calls out. Question: Which one of them calls out the answer? Why is he 100% certain of the color of his hat? This is not a trick question. There are no outside influences nor other ways of communicating. They cannot move and are buried in a straight line; A & B can only see their respective sides of the wall, C can see B, and D can see B & C.

C calls out that he is wearing a black hat. Why is he 100% certain of the color of his hat? After a while, C comes to the realization that he must answer. This is because D can’t answer, and neither can A or B. D can see C and B, but can’t determine his own hat color. B can’t see anyone and also can’t determine his own hat color. A is in the same situation as B, where he can’t see anyone and can’t determine his own hat color. Since A, B, and D are silent, that leaves C. C knows he is wearing a black hat because if D saw that both B and C were wearing white hats, then he would have answered. But since D is silent, C knows that he must be wearing a black hat as he can see that B is wearing a white hat.

Real Estate

Credit: The Key Component

by Ann Zeilingold Unless one has cash to cover the purchase, credit is a key component in purchasing a home and yes, even renting a home. While income is equally important, the first step always comes back to credit. What constitutes a “good” credit report, and why is it so key? A good credit report usually has more than one active account, preferably three or more. There should be no late payments and the current balances on each credit item should be less than 30% of the high credit allowed. For example: If one has a Visa card, and the highest credit available is $5,000, the balance should be less than $1,500. It is good to have a “mix” of credit, credit cards, car loan/lease, and a mortgage. Student loans are reflected on the credit score, as well as time shares and personal loans and lines, such as overdrafts on checking accounts. The amount of time that an account is open also plays a part. If a person has only good credit, but the history is less than two years, the credit report cannot accurately reflect a willingness to pay back over time. Therefore, sometimes the score will not be as high as another credit report and may even have a late payment on it, but the accounts have the benefit of being two, three,or five-plus years open. I school people regularly on how to optimize their credit score. I look at the negative accounts and what is positive. I have found over the years that credit is tricky; it is not a science. A credit repair specialist looks at a report to see how many derogatory items can they remove, completely expunge of the credit report. I look at a credit report to see what one can do to get a credit score and report that will

be acceptable to a mortgage loan underwriter, to approve a mortgage. These are two separate things. Just last week, Tzipora and Nachman closed on their loan. They were purchasing a home for $896,000, putting down 20%. Because their loan was a “jumbo” loan, the loans with the best rates being offered to them had specific credit requirements. They had to have three active accounts. (Active means that the accounts had been active in the last 12 months.) Additionally, they had to have a rental history that could be documented and a score over 700. They had almost all of the above. They lived in a home owned by family. There was no “documented” rent history. Tziporah only had two active accounts, but she did have a deferred student loan. We were able to use the deferred student loan, and there was an exception on the rental history if one lived with family. Phew! These are details that your mortgage loan has to research before quoting a rate and terms, and these differences be-

tween lending requirements can mean the difference between one family getting one rate and their relative or friend getting a different rate. And what about a rental? Most landlords require a credit report prior to accepting a new tenant. Why is that? People who pay their bills on time tend to also pay their rent. When a person has poor credit it is more difficult for them to find a rental. Sometimes in order to rent a home they need to find a co-signer or to put up additional security. How do you know if your credit is good, if your report is accurate, and whether you have the best credit score that you can? There are services that monitor your credit, and their websites are full of excellent advice, tips, and practical applications. Such monitoring ser-

vices include Credit Check Total or Credit Karma. These services have monthly fees, but they may be worthwhile. The only way to get an accurate reading of your credit score for mortgage purposes is to check your credit through a mortgage company, but that is a “hard inquiry” and only makes sense if you will be purchasing a home soon. One can also request a report at no cost, once a year, from the bureaus directly. The website is www.annualcreditreport.com. This report has no score, but it is a way to monitor annually on what is being reported. Credit has no bias, and is color- and gender-blind, but credit affects everybody!
