AN INTERVIEW WITH A CHAZAK REWARDS CARD CONSUMER

As the Chazak Card becomes more and more popular amongst frum consumers, we decided to interview a loyal card user, Mrs. Schwartz from Monsey to learn more about the card and what makes it so addictive to shoppers. L. Halevi (LH): Hi there, do you have a few minutes to discuss the Chazak Card I just saw you using at Evergreen? Mrs. Schwartz: Sure, go ahead! LH: How long have you been Benefitting from the Chazak card? MS: I have it about 3 years. I got it right when they launched the program. I first got the card because it came with a 30 day free trial. I wasn’t sure if it was for me, because I don’t like to open up new credit cards. But then I was told it is just a discount card. I simply present it to the merchant and I get an instant discount that day. I don’t have to wait for any rebates. After 30 days I saved so much money I knew it was a smart purchase. It’s a real no brainer, I don’t even feel the $10 per month, as I save about $40 per month on groceries alone in Evergreen everyday with the 5% discount, so that’s a $30 profit each month, not to mention the many other stores I save in. Interestingly, originally I thought that I wouldn’t use it that often as I also enjoy shopping at the mall, but after a while I realized how much I shop in heimshe stores as well, for things like meat, fish, robes, kids shoes, hosiery and the like, and after a while the savings just kept piling up. I saved serious money this year, around $2,000, maybe more, all for a small investment of $10 per month. LH: Wow. How does it work? MS: It’s simple. Basically, I pay a small fee of $10 per month and then I can use the card at hundreds of stores and get instant discounts of 5-15% off my total bill. I even get entered into a monthly raffle for great prizes. This September I can win a set of Magna Tiles. In January I heard they are giving away 2 tickets to Israel or $2,500 Cash. LH: What kinds of stores participate in this program? MS: All the stores where I shop anyway, such as groceries, clothing stores, fish stores, gift stores, meat stores, you name it. Wherever I go, I bring my Chazak Card with me. Whether it’s a pizza shop or a shoe store, I always save money. I never leave the house without it. Even,when I visit my mother in Boro Park, I bring it along too, and whenever we go out to lunch in China Glatt I save lots of money.

LH: How did you initially hear about the card? MS: I picked up a brochure in one of the hundreds of participating stores, and it just made sense to sign up, so I did. By now I heard they already have over 1500 people who signed up for the discounts, but I really hope more people will take advantage of the great benefits. Think about it, I spend around $400 a week in Evergreen and use my card every time. I get back the money I spent on membership in 3 or 4 shopping trips, and the rest of the year I just save and save and save. It’s about $20 savings per shopping trip, it’s awesome. I use it everywhere and am glad that I do! LH: Now with Yom Tov shopping season upon us, it sounds like a great time to sign up. MS: It’s always a good time to sign up, as no matter what you are shopping for, and no matter when you do that shopping – be it for back-toschool, for Yomim Tovim, making a simcha or anytime around the year - you will be saving big. And now, to make it even more exciting, every time I use my card I text the words "I saved at Weingarten’s Shoes" to 845-682-2675 and I get entered into a raffle to win a Miele Vacuum from MH Vacuums. I really need a vacuum and I heard the Miele is a fantastic one. I hope I win! LH: Can you tell me some of the stores you shop in that accept the card? MS: Oh boy, so many, where shall I begin? Ok, the following stores come to mind: 10% off at Shelly’s Town Square, 7% off at F&F, 5% off at The Genuine shop and 10% of at Ruthie’s, 10% off at Monsey Shoes, 10% off at Kings Stationary for school supplies, 5-10% off at Merkaz for Judaica, and then when I was making a Chasuna I saved 10% off at Auction Mart, 5% off at Signature Silver and 15% at Host it. Those are just the stores in my area; there are hundreds more in other communities as well.

LH: Wow, sounds like an amazing card. I wonder if they have stores in my area.

LH: Yes, the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation is definitely a worthwhile organization to support, and to do it in such an easy and smart way definitely sounds like a good idea! Less is better than nothing, but all of my sources quoted a minimum of 15 min — and I had many sources for this. That said, you can start with less — less minutes and less coconut oil — and build it up. It seems like a lot, but it really isn't. Coconut oil is pleasant-tasting, smooth — even kids can handle it! Do it while you're in the shower, washing your dishes, flipping through The Monsey View etc., and you won't even notice that you have it in your mouth! It's not like you have to stand in front of the bathroom mirror for 20 minutes watching yourself swish it around your mouth. All the best,

I am absolutely shocked by stories that I am hearing spreading around our community. Stories of normal, loving families with normal, healthy children who love to run and jump and explore their world abruptly having their caring homes shattered by certain doctors who automatically scream “abuse!” when the normal bumps and bruises of youth happen. The tragic stories coming out of these offices are becoming more commonplace, with more families affected and being torn asunder. Of course, in cases of truly suspicious happenings, we want and expect our community doctors to raise the red flag and advocate for children. However, nearly all of the recent stories can be

proven as false accusations, leaving community members terrified that they will be the next family vilified and ripped apart. I am writing this letter cautioning, warning, begging community members to heavily investigate your family’s doctor before naively walking into his/ her office. Speak with other people, ask around; find out if your doctor is one of the those whistle-blowers that blow with no air. I am also writing this to medical establishments that serve our community: know your doctors, check their records, compare them to other doctors’ records, and see which ones seem to be going overboard with accusations. I happened to run into the director of my daughters’ camp mid-summer and thanked her for the wonderful time they were having. To my surprise, she started telling me about issues she had with each daughter. I asked her why she didn’t call me and she answered that she had not yet gotten to it. I left that brief conversation feeling deflated. Later that day, I spoke to each of my daughters. One’s issue was a tznius infringement. “But other girls also do it!” she insisted. A second daughter had been accused of chutzpah. “So why did my counselors say I was “Best of the Month?” I decided that I needed to discuss the subject further with the camp director and left a message for her. I wanted to ask her why she chose only to share negative information about my girls who have so many positive qualities. Further, if a problem was not significant and serious enough to prioritize a phone call, why share it with me at a fluke meeting? A little while later, I answered my own questions. You see, I too, work with children and their parents, and I have been guilty of the same crime. As I experienced the pain of being on the receiving end, I resolved to BE”H never do it again. The more I thought about this uncomfortable experience, the easier it was for me to see that it was directly from Hashem.

Changing Beliefs In the last two articles, we have discussed how limiting beliefs about our weight can hold us back from achieving our goals. So today, I want to share with you some ideas on how to actually change those beliefs. To be honest, there are many different techniques to work with when it comes to how we change our beliefs. Let’s start with the two most important and frequently used methods.

1. BELIEFS VS. FACTS: It’s helpful to accept that most of our beliefs are not actually facts. They are feelings and opinions that we have gathered over a certain period of time, and eventually, we began to view them as truths. Did you know that in India, baby elephants have a rope tied loosely to one of their legs — a string that they can escape in seconds when they grow older. Well, the reason they stay put even then is because they believe they cannot escape, since they have been conditioned to perceive the situation as such. Now, is it true that they can’t escape the string? Of course not, but the elephant would tell you that it’s an absolute truth — he is tied and cannot escape. As human beings, we sometimes behave in a similar fashion, believing things about ourselves that we perceive as truths rather than opinions or feelings. The first step is to realize that all your beliefs surrounding weight loss or maintaining your weight are from your past experiences, and they feel so true, that when you say, “Losing weight is so hard,” or “Exercise is so boring,” you actually believe it.

2. ADOPT BETTER BELIEFS: If you’re stuck on a belief, then you feel helpless, hopeless, and become a victim of circumstances. When you realize that you have

So, you can either feel guilty about the past or worry about the future — or both — but neither option is very helpful.

the power to change any of your beliefs in order to suit your needs, you will be empowered enough to make changes and even find those changes enjoyable. If you think about it, you will see that most of your thoughts are about the past or future, which creates stress in your mind, because the past is over and you really have no clue about the future. So, you can either feel guilty about the past or worry about the future — or both — but neither option is very helpful. A good practice is to let yourself experience the moment, because that’s really the only thing you have right now. With that, your belief that losing weight is too difficult can transform into your enjoying the process of becoming healthy and slim every moment. Or, if you find exercise boring, you can change that mentality into feelings of invigoration, or appreciation of how healthy it feels to sweat right now. Can you see the difference when you live in the present? Can you sense that if you let yourself go with the flow, the parts of life we once disliked can actually be interesting and enjoyable? For some people, it might be more of a challenge to feel it initially, but if you decide to focus on just that one thing at a time, it can become a beautiful experience rather than an obligation or a chore.

Here are a few helpful tips: *Breakfast: Many kids are not in the mood to eat right when they get up. If that’s the case with yours, then simply pack them a breakfast to take with them to school, or make them a protein shake (which is often more ap-

Choose healthy proteins like cheese, Greek yogurt, or eggs. And if time permits, throw some fruit, vegetables, or whole-grain crackers or bread. *Snacks: Most schools are encouraging students to eat healthy snacks, and if parents pack them in cute containers, wholesome foods become even more appealing. String cheese, sliced veggies with dip, fruit, whole wheat pretzels, spelt cakes, popcorn, and potato chips

are all great snack foods. Try to keep your kids away from snacks that contain MSG or artificial colorings and flavorings. If possible, leave those unhealthy snacks as Shabbos treats. The medical askan leafed through the thick portfolio with a grave expression. “Only Dr. Frederick Prell can be trusted with this complex surgery. He’s in a hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil.” He handed Mr. Yochanan Neuman a slip of paper with the hospital information. “And the cost is $200,000.” Mr. Neuman just stared. $200,000. His daughter’s life. Dini’s life was worth much more. From that day, Mr. Neuman’s life was never the same. The operation was scheduled for another two months, and he worked feverishly to obtain the astronomical sum. When he wasn’t visiting banks and gemachs, he was brainstorming. And when he wasn’t brainstorming, he was dreaming at night of the worst. With every last penny of his savings and more loans than he wished to care, Mr. Neuman got onto the airplane with Dini, to Brazil — and hopefully, renewed life. Surgery day: the pinnacle after the frenzied struggle of weeks. Mr. Neuman held out his hand. Here was the Dr. Prell he’d been waiting for, whose fingers would perform the miracle for them. His hand still clasping the doctor’s, he read the name tag. Dr. Brian Bradley? Mr. Neuman froze. His feet began to wobble. He’d paid the

$200,000 he didn’t have for Dr. Frederick Prell. He’d confirmed it with the hospital numerous times. Dr. Bradley smiled broadly when Mr. Neuman sputtered his incredulity. “You have nothing to worry about. I’m Dr. Prell’s chief trainee. Pleased to meet you.” Mr. Neuman began to sweat. He would make a ruckus now. He would not let this happen. He had put himself into deep debt so that Dr. Prell would save Dini’s future. The askan couldn’t have been clearer: Dr. Frederick Prell, and only Dr. Frederick Prell. He’d get Dr. Prell down here, no matter what it took. Dr. Bradley was already moving them through the preparatory procedures, but Mr. Neuman was not there. He was thinking, racking his brain with a desperation he knew all too well from the previous few weeks. “Tamim tihyeh im Hashem Elokecha” — the pasuk came, unbidden, into his thoughts. Whatever happens to you, accept it with temimus, Rashi explains. Accept. Accept. Accept. Mr. Neuman steadied his breath. Hashem orchestrated this. The thought was startling as it was calming. This is the way it was meant to be. Dr. Brian Bradley was their surgeon to-

day, and it was not his business to know why or try to change it. Mr. Neuman got into the hospital scrubs. He sat near Dini and stroked her head. The surgery was a success, Dini recovered slowly, and finally they could head back home. Life resumed as usual — except for the big, deep debt that didn’t leave them day or night. Years passed, and finally Mr. Neuman bid the debt goodbye. And then Dini was sick again. The same problem, the same askan, the same answer. Dr. Frederick Prell, and only Dr. Frederick Prell. $200,000. Mr. Neuman fell onto a chair, and the room began to swim. $200,000 seemed out of the question. But so was skipping the surgery. By supernatural and humiliating means, the $200,000 were in his pocket as he sat on the airplane with Dini again. Surgery day. The same Dr. Bradley, the same surprise. “I know you, don’t I?” Dr. Bradley looked at Mr. Neuman, squinting. Mr. Neuman told him about the first surgery and his second unpleasant surprise. “I operated the first time? She’s sick again?” Dr. Bradley frowned. “I will do a repeat surgery at no cost to you. And by the way, Dr. Prell just retired.” It took a few minutes for the

information to register and then Mr. Neuman began to smile. “Now I know why you had to be our surgeon five years ago. If I had Dr. Prell then, today I’d be another $200,000 short.” Mr. Neuman couldn’t wait to be back home and return the $200,000. But most of all, he looked forward to bringing home with him a healthy daughter and a robust emunah. Parshas Shoftim exhorts us in perek ‫י"ח‬, pasuk ‫ י"ג‬to be tamim — literally translated as “naïve.” “V’lo sachkor achar ha’asidos” — do not concern yourself with the future, Rashi says. Relinquishing control is both foreboding and freeing. We may even worry over not being worried — who will take care of us, then? Hashem will, just as He has always. Worrying and fretting never help. In fact, if we worry too much, Hashem might say, “You think parnassa is up to you? Then let’s see you do it!” Do you ever envy a baby, who lies cuddled safely in his mother’s arms? As Schools Open, Ramapo Police Remind Parents and Drivers of Safety Tips With those big yellow buses back on the roads again, carrying our precious children to and from school, the Ramapo Police Department is urging parents to spend a few minutes talking to their children about pedestrian safety including: • Looking both ways before crossing the street • Crossing only at corners, never in between • Obeying police officers, crossing guards, and traffic signals. • Watching out for turning cars • Being especially careful in bad weather • Playing far away from traffic

Drivers are reminded to exercise extra caution near schools and to always drive at or below posted speed limits. Motorists should always be prepared to stop when they see a school bus with flashing red lights on either side of the roadway, even on divided and multilane highways. Passing a school bus whose red lights are flashing is a punishable offense with fines ranging from $250 to $400, a possible prison sentence of up to 30 days, and five points on your license, with increasing penalties for further offenses, including the possible suspension of your driver's license for a minimum of six months.

Rockland Police Seeking Officers Less than three weeks remain until the applications deadline for the county’s police civil service test, the first step towards a career in local law enforcement. The Ramapo Police Department has been recruiting candidates at local signups over the past few weeks. The test, which is administered by

Rockland County and will be given in mid-November, is available in several languages besides English, including Yiddish. “This is an opportunity to begin a career in law enforcement, a proud and rewarding profession,” said County Executive Ed Day, a former commander with the NYPD.

Conflicting Predictions for Winter Weather While the Farmer’s Almanac is calling for frigid temperatures and above-average snowfalls in our area this coming winter, the Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting far milder weather. Despite their similar names, the two annual guides are completely different books. The Farmer’s Almanac was first published in 1818, 26 years after the debut of the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Both were intended to be used as reference guides by farmers, and include tide tables and planting charts in addition to weather forecasts. Both also claim to use “secret” formulas to predict the weather for the upcoming year.

Whether or not either is actually accurate is a subject of much debate. CNN senior meteorologist Dave Henin suggested that readers approach the weather forecasts with a measure of skepticism. “It’s difficult enough to do a five-day forecast,” said Henin. “We’re really good at the day of and the next day, (and) we’re better at temperature a ways out than precipitation. But to forecast out that far in advance... even the science behind our long-range forecasting is sometimes not that solid.” (Rockland Daily Voice)

Stone By Chany Rosengarten Recap: Malka’la is on the plane to New York. The woman sitting next to her tells her not to expect any success raising money in America. Malka’la is already beset with guilt and doubt at leaving her children, and experiences a deep, impossible fear. And here it was: America. People clapped when the plane touched ground, and her seatmate gave her a pinched smile, a bit too eager on the eyes, a bit tight around the lips. Malka’la smiled back. It would be okay. She knew that already, having experienced pains of eternal proportions, and coming out of them intact. She knew, after the turbulence of the plane, not only outside, but in the place it mattered most, that her Creator held her lovingly through each lurch. And now — America. She might even come out with a few dollars from it. Her mind, a racetrack with many turns, added up a few numbers. What if she made $20,000? That would be nearly a hundred thousand shekels. That would mean paying off her mortgage, having food for the children, and if she divided it into, say, monthly installments, she could have enough

for 100 months. A hundred months. Hmm… or she could buy a business, which would give her dividends forever, but no, you can only buy a cow for milk when you have the field to feed him. For now, she needed to make enough money so she could feed herself and her family. And what about clothes? What if she could buy some shoes for the children? Could she buy them in America? She would have to give maaser. That would be $2,000. The thought made her smile. She might give it to her parents, for marrying off her siblings. Or she could help other orphans, but… It was improbable she would collect $20,000. Even if she did, she still had sixty thousand shekels on her mortgage. That was a lot of money. And as long as she was still paying payments… The line in front of her started moving. From the window, if

she bent down to look, now that all were standing, waiting impatiently to join the line snaking off the plane on a stairway, she could see that America was a white, frosted place, much like sponga water when too much soap was added, white, with a deep, dirty gray. She got closer to the door. The plane was her last connection to the land she had left behind, and here was the door. Her skin tightened all over her as it came in contact with the cold. It wasn’t only the air. They were needles hitting her in places she was vulnerable most. It was so cold, biting, bitter. Her fingers grew hard like spokes, so she tried holding them in each other but… the suitcase, so she couldn’t. She’d have to brave it. What a cold, bitter land. And those wisps that flew across her field of vision, why, it was snow. Snow! Real, touchable snow. She put her suitcase

But she had only brought one, because when she left her children, she had left them under a sun so charming it could melt away any vestiges of winter. The bus started rolling, and people swayed and grabbed metal rods. She could see the exhaust of the bus creating clouds of gray in the grayness of the world it would dissipate into. In line, she pulled out her visa. She hadn’t brought more than the basics, and they fit neatly into a small valise. She did it so that she could be a carrier of goods, if she found someone willing to pay for export. And also, she imagined that she could take a small amount,

perhaps $200, and buy with it new shoes, new clothes for the children. What would it be like if they all had one new shirt, a shirt not cut out from Nachman’s old clothes, a shirt without a single tear? What if she came home with a suitcase full of gifts? She could imagine the glow on her children’s faces. Is that what they looked like when they smiled? Was she starting to forget their faces? She followed the others out through the main doors. Before she had left, the moneychanger had sold her eight American coins. Quarters. He said they were used to make phone calls in America, and now she could call if she needed help. When she got ready to go, when she had made her decision and faced the prospect that the gargantuan leap might come into being, she went

Zelda had cousins in America. Zelda made the phone calls. Malka’la would stay in Monsey, with Zelda’s daughter’s cousin, Gella Kahn. She now had a paper with the name, number, and address of Gella. iry blue is very similar to one of the two colors of the year, called “Serenity”. Airy blue, however, has a bit more of a grey winter-appropriate tinge and less of the pink that gave the color of the year a purple shade. It is a color of the utmost elegance and metamorphosizes depending on the fabric of each particular garment.

es, pink has entered the winter color palette in its softest and most beautiful form. Embrace the ethereal Color of the Year “Rose Quartz”. This is the “Blush” color you’ve been hearing about everywhere, and don’t expect it to be going anywhere so fast! Yeast cake, favorably known to most of us as kokosh cake, is the signature Jewish pastry. Despite the fact that its preparation is very time-consuming, it is still most popular, especially before the yom tov season. One full batch yields a lot and freezes beautifully for an extended time, but beware, these cakes usually disappear way before their freezer life expires. Most Yiddishe balabustas have some kokosh baking genes running in their DNA. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pity to let such genetics lie dormant. So fit yourself with an apron and follow our simple step-by-step instructions to create these flavorful and delicious danishes and babkas for your family's delight.

CHOCOLATE BABKE BY LEAH STERN

This trans-fat free dough is a most versatile kokosh cake dough that adapts easily for any yeast cake recipe. Honestly, I make 6 pounds at a time, but present this 3-lb. version so as not to overwhelm the novice baker. Feel free to double, and don’t forget to take challah if you do.

DOUGH 3 lbs. (10 cups) flour 4 eggs ¾ cup sugar 1 T. vanilla sugar ½ tsp. kosher salt 1 ½ cups oil 2 cups warm water 3 T. dry yeast HOMEMADE LIQUID MARBLE 1 cup Dutch cocoa 1 cup sugar ½ cup oil ½ cup warm water Mix all ingredients until it has no lumps and spreadable consistency is reached.

COCOA MIX 1 cup Dutch cocoa 2 cups sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup confectioners sugar 2 T. cornstarch ½ tsp. cinnamon 2 T. vanilla sugar

Dissolve yeast in 1 cup warm water with 3 T. sugar. Allow to proof.

2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Add proofed yeast and knead until a soft dough is formed. 3. Allow to rise 15 minutes. Divide into 5 balls. 1 4. Roll out each bowl into a 19-by-14 rectangle. Smear liquid marble over dough. Then sprinkle with 1 cup of cocoa mix. 2 3 5. Roll up lengthwise. 4 6. Form into horseshoe shape. 5 7. Twist one side over the other. 6 8. Take underside and twist over the top. 7 8 9. Stretch top of dough over the ends, concealing filling as much as possible. 10. Place into a 1-lb loaf pan.

In a large bowl, mix until well combined.

11. Beat one egg with a fork. Brush over prepared loaf.

STREUSEL

13. Bake at 350° for 1 hour.

1/3 cup flour 1/3 cup brown sugar 3 T. oil Mix until a crumby texture is obtained.

12. Sprinkle with streusel. 9 14. Allow to cool 10 to 15 minutes and remove from pan. 15. Optional: Drizzle melted baking chocolate or chocolate glaze when cooled. 16. Prepare yourself a mug of coffee and enjoy a slice!

CINNAMON AND VANILLA BUNS BY DRAIZY WERCBERGER

These buns take just one hour, from start to finish, completely debunking the myth that baking yeast cakes is an all-day project. This recipe yields four rolls, two with a cinnamon filling, and two with a vanilla filling. Double either filling — or substitute with a chocolate filling — to make the flavor of your buns according to your preference.

DOUGH 10 cups flour 3 T. dry yeast 2 tsp. salt 2/3 cup sugar 2/3 cup oil 1 cup water 2 cups milk or milk substitute 1.

2 eggs 8 T. oil, separate (for drizzling on dough) CINNAMON FILLING

VANILLA FILLING 1/3 cup white sugar 1/3 cup confectioner's sugar 2 T. vanilla sugar

1/3 cup confectioners sugar 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon powder

In a large mixing bowl, put flour, yeast, sugar, salt, egg, and oil.

2. In another bowl, combine milk and water and microwave for about a minute. Then, pour it into the flour mixture. 3. Using a mixer, mix the ingredients for about six minutes, until a smooth dough is formed. 4. Place into a large bowl and cover, and let rise for 15 minutes. 5. Divide dough in four. 6. Roll out each part to a large rectangle.

To save cleanup time, let the dough rise in a bag.

7. On each rectangle, smear 2 T. oil and half of one of the fillings, so that you will have two cinnamon rolls and two vanilla rolls. 8. Roll up jelly-roll style, and cut each roll into about 20 slices. 9. Distribute the danishes from each roll onto a cookie sheet. 10. Let rise on the counter while the oven preheats to 400°. 11. Bake for about 12-14 minutes.

Never buy your kids sturdy school shoes.

I was home with a newborn when my mother graciously offered to take my older daughter to buy school shoes. “Any preferences?” she asked. I made a grim mistake. “Please try to get her sturdy shoes that will last.” Never get your kids sturdy shoes. Never ever get your kids practical shoes that will last throughout the season. Sturdy shoes are clunky. Practical shoes can be ugly. Perhaps it was the emotions that come with a new baby, but my face fell when my daughter breezed through the front door, proudly displaying her new shoes. “They are returnable,” my mother quickly reassured me. My daughter insisted on trying them. I did not like them (that’s an understatement). I was trying to formulate a gentle way of conveying this to my mother who had just braved the chaotic back-toschool scene at the shoe store so I could rest. Someone mistakenly opened the back door and my cute little daughter chose that moment to dash outside and splash in a puddle. The shoes were ours to keep. So instead of saying, “I really appreciate it, but can we please switch them for a different pair?” I said, “They are really cute!” I swallowed hard and I commanded my tears to stay put. It was only shoes, for Heaven’s sake. Still, those shoes bothered me throughout the long, brutal winter. True to my original request, they were sturdy. So sturdy, in fact, that they remained in perfect condition. I kept checking for holes or tears, anything that would justify the need for a new pair, but unfortunately they

lasted. All winter long. I was overjoyed when spring finally rolled around — and with it, the new line of spring shoes. I was determined to buy my daughter the cutest pair of shoes in the store. I finally settled on a chic pair of loafers. They were stunning! I smiled smugly as I watched her play with a neighbor who was wearing plain, clunky summer shoes. As the youngest of ten, you’d think her mother would have learned how to buy cute shoes by now! She should really learn from me. My daughter had the sharpest looking pair of shoes on the block. My daughter was running home, when the gorgeous new shoes slipped off her feet. No biggie, we put them right back on. But they slipped off again and again and again and again. I spent a large part of the spring slipping shoes onto my daughter’s feet. Oh. So that’s why people don’t buy loafers for two-year-olds. My daughter reported that Morah had told her to just leave her shoes in her briefcase. Ouch. The poor kid was walking around completely shoeless. So a few weeks later we purchased cute sneaker shoes. They were identical to the neighbor’s shoes. With ten kids, she’s a smart woman. I’ve really got to learn from her practical experience. Those shoes were great for about one week, when dear daughter returned home with a hole on the left shoe. Huh? Where did that come from? It was still mid-July so we were back in the shoe store for our third pair of summer shoes. Pair Number Three was great, until my daughter complained that they were “hard.” Oh no! She probably just had to break into them, but still. I was done with shoes. That day, she wore her old scuffed winter Shabbos shoes to day camp. I felt better when I noticed another toddler parading around town in snow boots on the muggiest, hottest summer day. I certainly didn’t judge her mother. The season is quickly passing and the winter shoes are on the shelves now. I’ve learned the hard way:

What’s the best time to do homework?

What’s the best time to eat supper?

Although there are some educators who are of a different opinion, most experts believe that homework should be tackled as soon as the kids come home from school. The material they learned is still fresh in their minds, and it is easier to recall the suggestions and instructions that teachers have taught. Another major pro to crossing homework off the list first, is that it instills a sense of accomplishment that carries over to the rest of the night, and clears the evening for activities other than scholastics to give the brain a break.

The optimum dinner time is between 6:00 and 7:00 pm for adults, and between 5:00 and 6:00 for children who go to sleep between 7:00 and 8:00 pm. Serving them a heavy meal too close to bedtime is not the best for their digestive systems. Serve the children a light snack when they come home from school to curb their hunger, yet not to satiate them enough to be too full to eat at dinnertime.

What’s the best time to sign the kids’ papers? Paper and test signing should never be left for the morning. Make it part of the bedtime routine to go through your child’s briefcase to ascertain that all paperwork has been dealt with.

What’s the best time to prepare the kids’ clothing? The morning rush is something that can almost be avoided with proper planning. Lay each child’s clothes out before turning in for the night. If you have a child who likes to choose his or her own clothes, have the child do so before s/he goes to sleep to avoid struggles in the morning. Preparing in advance avoids last-minute shoe searches and

unpleasant surprises, such as finding out that a shirt has not made it into the wash a few minutes before it is to be donned.

What’s the best time to go to sleep? For three- through six-yearolds, who should sleep between eleven and thirteen hours, the ideal bedtime is between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, depending on what time they tend to wake up in the morning. Seven- to twelve-year-olds should be sleeping ten to eleven hours a night, and their ideal bedtime is between 7:30 and 9:00, depending at which side of the range they are. Teenagers should be sleeping at least 9 hours a night. Since teenagers will generally sleep until Zero Hour, simply count back nine or more hours from the time that they have to be up in the morning, and set that as bedtime. Keep in mind that it takes an average of 15 minutes for a child

to fall asleep, so the bedtime should be a quarter of an hour prior to the time you’d want them to be asleep.

What’s the best time to take a shower? Generally, a hot or warm shower will relax a person and helps one fall asleep. So showers are best off done before bedtime. If one chooses to take a shower in the morning, use the following wake-up trick. Once the shower is done, the nozzle should be cranked to the cold side, and the person should remain standing under the cold water for 30 seconds. This will do the job better than coffee. (Not recommended for winter mornings.)

What’s the best time to awake in the morning? Set your alarm to about 30 minutes before your children awake. It will make all the difference in your day. By the time you coax your crew out of the cozy confines of their covers, you’ll be acquainted with the new day,

dressed, after your morning coffee, and hopefully having managed to work a few minutes of davening in, too. A half hour of sleep is a small price to pay for a great beginning to a new day. As for the children, if they are not the early risers whom it’s hard to beat, they should (try to

be) awoken when the clock still allows for a calm transition from bed to desk, with enough time to get dressed properly, eat breakfast calmly, collect themselves, and amble to their bus stop or school.

What’s the best time to schedule healthy check-ups and dentist appointments? Always try to schedule appointments before or after school hours, or on a day where school is not in session. Many medical centers and physicians now offer early or late hour appointments which work well for the conscientious student. When it’s inevitable to miss school, schedule the appointment as close as possible to the beginning or end of the school day, as leaving school and then returning breaks up the day one time too many for the student and her classmates.

What’s the best time to call the teacher when there is an issue? You may think it’s early in the year, but deal with an issue right away before it becomes a problem. Of course, allow time for a child to get used to something that s/ he is not happy with, like a seating change or a way of studying, but issues of real concern should be dealt with in the beginning stages. If there’s something about your child that her new teacher should know about, don’t wait for her to make a mistake and unintentionally hurt your daughter. Touch base early and join forces to bring out the best in your child.

What’s the best time to compliment your child? There’s never a wrong time to give your child — or anyone — a boost. Give her the confidence to succeed, to thrive, and to be her very best. Notice how hard she’s trying and show her you believe in her. Make it your business to find positive things to say.

What’s the best time for students to file papers and organize their binders? The trick is not to let the papers accumulate. Since many teachers will not allow students to punch or file their papers, students should designate a time each day to file papers and straighten up. It can be the first five minutes of recess or lunch break, between periods, or right after the recess bell before the teacher enters the classroom (if there isn’t a different assignment then). Sometimes, if it works with the school’s policy, it can be done right after dismissal. But be on top of it, because once the papers start piling up, it grows from a routine to a daunting task.

What’s the best time for students to prepare for a test? Instead of cramming the info when test season makes a showing, students should be proactive. Preparing for each teacher’s lesson by reading over the notes from the previous lesson and making up any work missed will ensure that the students have the info down pat as they go along. By being on top of homework and assignments and reinforcing the studies on a steady basis, students will be at ease with the info, so that when the testing happens, all that has to be done is put pen to paper to spill the information mastered.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Fabric of your choice, cut to 25 1/2” and 3 1/2” and 3” by 3” 25” utility wire #20 (can be found in any hardware store) Small rubber band or ponytail holder Hot glue and glue gun

Needle and thread

1 Take the longest piece of fabric and fold in half lengthwise, with right sides together. Pin all around raw edges, and stitch 3/8” seams all around (on all three open sides). In the center of the longest side, leave an opening of approximately 2”.

2 Turn fabric right-side-out by pulling the fabric through the opening in the center. Iron lightly.

Insert wire into sash through the center opening of the fabric.

Fold the sash in three, like an “N.”

3 Bend back a ½” on both ends of the wire, forming loops on both ends.

6 Tie center tightly with the rubber band/ponytail holder. Slightly pull the top layer back, so half of it is on bottom, and the other half is on top.

Fold 3” by 3” fabric in half, with wrong sides together. Pin. Stitch ¼” seam. Roll over so seam is in center. Iron.

Wrap center of bow with tab. Slip stitch ends of tab together.

CHAPTER ONE

When I grow up I want to be a teacher. Each year, when my teacher would ask what I’d be when I grew up, I’d scrawl this carefully into my notebooks. This confident ambition was as defining of my existence as my name and address. What could life be like, anyway, if I wasn’t a teacher? It would be… it just wouldn’t be. I would be a teacher. I was the girl whose notebook you copied from when you were absent. I was the one whose notes went around the class and came back with ketchup stains. I was the one who loved to study. (Yes, that’s right.) I was the one who would surely land a teaching job along with graduation. I was the one you’d point to and say, “If anyone will be a teacher, it will be her.” This plan and vision followed me throughout my school years, up until graduation. I didn’t land a teaching job, but I enrolled in a methodology course with bonus hashkafah classes. And together, they nixed my dream of eigh-

teen years. Methodology was — surprise, surprise — just not my thing. I sat through classes completely uninterested in the stages of reading development. I didn’t care for tips on teaching phonetics. I couldn’t fit my brain into these hard and fast rules. I needed freedom. What a strange idea — I

rating all five senses in the lesson. I had to write up exactly what I was planning to say, including questions I would ask. I had to prepare flashcards and visual aids. I spent five days preparing for one forty-five minute lesson. They said it was amazing, they said I was charismatic, everyone cheered.

But the longing for freedom intensified with every class and erupted when my turn to deliver a model lesson arrived. Just when I should have been proving my superior teaching potential, I disappointed everyone. Instead of throwing myself into lesson preparation with the gusto of someone who may finally realize his dreams, I sat down to prepare in bewildered panic and disinterest. I had to create a lesson plan and explain how I was incorpo-

But… I didn’t care. It was draining, it was demanding, and I didn’t want to do it again. I came home from school and flung all of my model lesson supplies and paraphernalia onto my desk and fell into bed. I propped my feet up and breathed in the luxury of a vacation. Ha. Mrs. Davis, my methodology instructor, had lots of plans for me. There was always something to read up on and prepare and learn and…aargh.

Every methodology class squeezed my brain harder and harder into its rigid rubric of rules and ideas. It confined me in its prison, and I wanted out. While that was happening, Mrs. Berman taught us about running a Yiddishe home. Her enthusiasm, tenderness, and warmth touched and inspired me. And her story pulled me up, up, and away from methodology, into places I really wanted to be. When Mrs. Berman graduated high school, everyone had grand expectations of her future as the rising mechaneches of the

I threw together stencils and a lesson plan. This time I didn’t work hard. This wasn’t a logical, thoughtout decision I made. I didn’t intend to play hooky — but I just

It was draining, it was demanding, and I didn’t want to do it again. next generation. But very soon, she got engaged and married, and then she realized that she couldn’t do it all. Teaching would demand too much of her time and her physical and emotional energy, and she felt she needed it for her family. She had a baby within a year, and in that year she also accepted a secretarial job. Secretary? The world gasped. Mrs. Berman would not be a teacher? It took many, many years, after she married off some of her children, before Mrs. Berman became the hashkafah teacher everyone had already assumed she’d never be. Mrs. Berman’s story kept me up at night. I, myself, grew up as a latchkey kid, and the thing I most wanted was to have a warm, inviting home where Mommy was always present — in all ways. I wanted to throw myself completely into creating a haven of a home — being a good wife to my future husband, a devoted mother of children. Model lesson two reared its head sooner than I thought, and

couldn’t do otherwise. I felt limp, drained of all of the vigor that had egged me on all those years. I celebrated my engagement toward the end of the year, and from then my interest in methodology totally fizzled out. I finished my methodology course with a thud, not a bang. Over. It was over, and so was my planned teaching career. Mrs. Davis didn’t hide her disappointment in me. “You flew off somewhere,” she told me. At least I could blame it on my upcoming wedding, but it was really only a part of the reason. I had learned some things about myself during that conflicted year. I discovered that I was not made for subscribing to rigid rules. I also found it excruciating to divide my emotional reserves. My upcoming marriage consumed me, and I didn’t have any energy left for a class full of students. I lost a dream, but suddenly — strangely — I felt free. The children also manage to convince their parents that they really needed one additional item, not currently on their parents’ shopping list. Monsey Is My Home! By Itta Shayowitz It’s Leil Shabbos, and I light the Shabbos candles as the sun just begins to set over the hilltops. I glance out the window and watch Tziporah and Menachem happily playing across the road in the neighbor’s yard. There are some geese resting on my front lawn, but I don’t even think twice about them anymore. Instead, I come outside to sit on the front porch and breathe in the delicious, crisp, clean air. Ahh, peace and serenity. My mind is clear, my heart is full. I look around at the trees and the grass and the children playing in their Shabbos finery and suddenly I realize… This is home. I wouldn’t trade it for anyplace else in the world! Last week I bumped into a seminary friend at a wedding. She asked me where I lived. “Monsey,” I replied. “How is it? Do you like it?” “Love it! Well, okay, it took a little time for me to adjust, but I’m really loving it now. And you know what else? I have a garage!” “You do? I’m so jealous!” “Not only that, but I also have a beautiful big yard where the kids run around and play. And in the fall, they make a

You know how much I love yoga, right? But I found this amazing gym that has tons of classes, so I’m meeting lots of new people. And okay, it took me a while to find my favorite supermarket, ‘cause there are really so many to choose from. But I settled on this one store, and they pretty much know my kids and I so well that I have a standing order by now. Oh, and well I guess there’s also a little bit of a traffic situation, but t h e n o n c e you get where you’re going,

there’s always a huge parking lot that’s free, which is a mechayeh. In fact, ever since I stopped feeding the meters like I used to do in Brooklyn, I’ve got so many extra quarters, I don’t even know what to do with them!“ I stopped to take a deep breath, and then just kept on going. I was on a roll. “Oh, and the parks are amazing. You know how in Brooklyn, a park is basically a playground with a slide and a couple of swings? Or, maybe it’s a school yard that gets open to the public on weekends? Well, in Monsey we are surrounded by these really beautiful parks with lots and lots of green grass and plenty of room for the kids to play. Just a couple of weeks ago, we went to visit my grandfather in Boro Park and we passed a mailbox on the street corner. Menachem said, ‘What’s that blue thing on the corner?’ He didn’t know what a mailbox is! That’s when I realized that the Shayowitz kids aren’t city children anymore, they’re Monsey kids. “And you know what else? We finally stopped calling our home in Monsey ‘the new house’. Should I Put Down the Most I Possibly Can?

by Ann Zeilingold A common question asked on a regular basis is the following: What is the “normal” amount that people put down on the mortgage? This question has no “normal” answer, since every mortgage is unique. Because there is mortgage insurance required on loans when the down payment is less than 20%, many people try to put down at least 20%. But if one does not have 20%, there are other options. There are mortgage loans available for first-time homebuyers with as little as 3% down. There is the FHA loan, which requires a 3.5% down payment and there are 5%, 10%, and 15% options too. Is it better to put a heftier down payment down, or is it better to put less down but to pay more monthly? Should one borrow more money if they can to put more down? Again, a question that I cannot answer, because the answers are so specific to the individual. What questions need to be asked and answered so that a first-time homebuyer can make a clear decision? Firstly, funds being used for the purchase of a home cannot be borrowed funds. Mortgage companies, though, only review the last one or two months’ bank statements, so we may never know where the money actually came from. But, if someone is looking to “borrow” from family in order to buy a home, doing so is a violation of mortgage guidelines. The reason being that the mortgage companies are concerned, rightfully so, that if the buyer borrowed funds privately, they may struggle greatly if the person who lent the money wants it back in a short time-frame. This actually happened to me. When I was buying my first home, somebody gave me money with no specific date when I should repay, just vaguely said,

He was behind on his mortgage and swimming in credit card debt because he could not manage the payments. This is exactly the scenario that banks are afraid of.

“In the future.” But after I was in the house six months, they asked me to pay them back. It was relatively a very small sum, but what if it had been a very large amount? I remember a client calling me years ago. They were in trouble and wanted to know if I could help them. They had bought a home, and put 50% down. In those days, we never questioned the down payment, especially such a large percentage down. What the bank didn’t know, and apparently the buyer didn’t think out thoroughly, was that the money for the down payment was all borrowed from friends and relatives. The person who called me related to me that soon after he closed on the house, the people who had given him the money wanted it paid back on a monthly basis, so he took cash advances from credit cards in order to make the payments, and now he was behind on his mortgage and swimming in credit card debt because he could not manage the payments. This is exactly the scenario that banks are afraid of. I always ask buy-

ers where the down payment is coming from and if they have the means to pay back the funds. If they say, “No, it’s from family; when I sell the house we would possibly need to pay back,” or something to that effect, or if they say, “Maybe when I become really rich I would have to.” If they are able to put a larger down payment down using gift funds, then certainly try to put more money down. But if the money will need to be repaid, then I believe sometimes it’s better to put less down and pay a higher mortgage payment. It is simply sometimes better to owe a lending institution than a close friend or family member. Another question that needs to be asked is, “When are you moving in?” This question may determine if the new home will be deemed an investment property or an owner-occupied property. There are major differences between owner-occupied loans and investment mortgages. I ask if the new home needs work. If a client is buying a home on a tight budget and there is literally nothing left, how will they move? How will they be able to afford ba-

sic move-in maintenance like painting, scraping floors, or even pay for their movers? The most important exercise with a first-time buyer is a budget. Regardless if they can get approved for the mortgage, can they afford the house? The mortgage algorithms in determining whether a family can afford a mortgage loan or not does not take in account the Tristate area’s high utilities, sales tax, kosher groceries, Yom Tov, yeshiva tuition, travel to work, two cars, high insurance, etc… Even if a family qualifies for the loan, paying the mortgage can be really hard. To sum this up, nothing is “normal,” and there are no rules of thumb regarding “regular” people and how they purchase a home. Some people have a lot of family support, some people have great jobs, some people have cash reserves, some people have other income not being used to determine mortgage eligibility, and some people have none of the above. Every buyer and situation is so unique!
