I would like to extend a thank you to Chany Rosengarten and The Monsey View on the impact that Sun on Stone had on my attitude toward men and women who come to my house to collect tzedakah. Reading about Malkala and her experiences — the shame, desperation, and rejection — gives me pause each time I go to the door for tzedakah. I not only started giving much more generously, but I have great appreciation for the collectors who go through this, as they try to do what is right for their specific circumstances and for their families. May Hashem enable us all to give on the giving end, and thank you for the inspiration! A Grateful Giver
A NEW PERSPECTIVE The last two days found me shivering in a winter coat and coughing terribly, struggling to breathe. I was sure that I had bronchitis, and maybe the flu. The past two years at this time, I contracted both and was put on antibiotics, but this year I didn’t want to run for the antibiotics. After being harmed by a doctor-prescribed medication, I had lost my innocent faith in western healing. Recalling Dr. Apter’s column in The Monsey View, I decided to give herbs a shot, and called Dr. Apter instead of running to the clinic. I am so happy that I did. Within an hour of taking the herbs she prescribed I was able to remove my winter coat for the first time in 24 hours, because the chills finally stopped. And my breathing was so much better! As I write this, I am still shortly after the first dose, and I feel amazing compared to a while ago. I also want to mention that I really respect that Dr. Apter gave me specific guidelines of when I should consult with a regular doctor. She doesn’t profess to be able to heal everything and acknowledges that there is room for other types of healing, though obviously, herbs is the safest place to start in many instances. Thank you for featuring this column, B.F.

tried. Regarding trying to bake her apples peeled, I’d like readers to be aware that Cortland apples baked unpeeled must be coated, as otherwise they’ll fall apart and turn into applesauce. So either use a firmer variety like Golden Delicious or Fuji, or coat your Cortland apples in oil and then in a mixture of bread crumbs or nuts and sugar. Enjoy! Leah Stern

I enjoy reading The Monsey View from cover to cover. I read the inbox a few weeks ago, and I understand the frustration of the homeowner, as she wanted to make money but regretted it after she came home and saw such a mess. We all need to know that there are all kinds of people, and all levels of baal habustas. I personally would never rent my apartment as I work too hard to maintain it during the year, even taking extra cleaning help when needed. I wouldn’t want the house to be turned into a wreck in two days of yom tov. It is just not worth it. I am not against the idea of renting the apartment to someone for a two-day yom tov, but you need to know that it is always a gamble, no matter if you get references or not. You never know a person too well, especially with the way they run their home. It is just like when people rent chasunah dresses, the gown rental knows that the dress might come back torn or filthy. That is what renting is all about. So when you do rent something out, there are chances you will regret it. I still want to help people and do hachnosas orchim, so I take guests into my house, and I give them one or two rooms. I try to host them nicely and make them feel at home, but I am still there to make sure that compote will not reach the crib. Hatzlacha, Compote in the Crib Reader

As told to: Basya Lev
I WENT TO THE DERMATOLOGIST to see about having a birthmark on my face removed. While I was in the waiting room, I noticed signs stating that one should take fifteen minutes to have his or her body checked out, which might save one’s life. Soon the nurse called me and led me into a room. When the dermatologist came in, she looked at the birthmark and said that she didn’t recommend removing it, as it was very flat and the scar would look worse. Since I was there and had noticed the signs, I mentioned that I had other birthmarks and asked to be checked out. She looked me over and asked if I was aware that I had birthmarks on my back. I said no. The doctor proceeded to check them and said that from all of them, only one was problematic. She then exclaimed, “Hashem sent you here!” I was very glad I came about the other birthmark and noticed the signs. I left the room and made an appointment to return in order to remove the problematic birthmark.

Session 3
A Yeshiva Life of Torah and Health By: Basya Kovacs, Nutrition Counselor
Shabbos on a Diet So many people struggle to eat well on Shabbos. The obvious reason for this is that the meals are bigger and the food is extra delicious. But in addition to that, Shabbos is a break in our routine. Eating well takes practice, and Sunday through Friday gives us the opportunity to get into a routine, develop better eating habits and make permanent changes. Shabbos is different. It only comes once a week so it takes longer to develop good Shabbos eating habits. The goal then is to make small but permanent changes to your Shabbos eating habits, so that instead of losing and gaining the same two pounds over and over, you begin to make a bit of progress each week. The first step to making changes in your Shabbos eating habits is to take a good, hard look at what you are currently eating. Many people don’t realize how much they are eating on a typical Shabbos, because overeating has become the norm.
46 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 23, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Let’s take a look: On a regular Shabbos, you may be eating some or all of the following: grape juice, several slices of challah, a variety of mayonnaise- or oil-based dips, gefilte fish, chrein, salmon, chicken soup, baked chicken, beef, cole slaw, cholent, herring, liver, kishke, lokshen kugel, potato kugel, salads, cold cuts, eggs (with more mayonnaise), tuna and lox spreads, cakes, cookies, ices, fruits, sodas, popcorn and other snacks — and the list goes on! And many of these foods are eaten multiple times over Shabbos! Let’s do some calorie counting: • ½ cup of grape juice: 80 calories x 2 meals = 160 calories • 2 slices of challah: 100 calories each x 3 meals = 600 calories • 3 tablespoons of dip: 80 calories each tablespoon x 3 meals = 720 calories This alone would almost be sufficient calorie intake (although not very nutritious) for an average teenage boy in a 24-hour period. But let’s
continue… • Small portion of gefilte fish: 100 calories x 2 meals = 200 calories • Small portion of salmon with sauce: 150 calories x 2 meals = 300 calories • One bowl of soup with lokshen and a small matzah ball = 150 calories • 1 chicken bottom with skin on = 300 calories • 1 medium slice of roast with sauce or gravy = 300 calories • 2 cookies, ½ cup of ices or ice cream, and a few handfuls of popcorn =400 calories • 3 pieces of herring with 3 crackers =150 calories • 1 scoop of liver = 150 calories • 1 bowl of cholent = 300 calories • ½ cup cole slaw: 150 calories x 3 meals = 450 calories • 1 small slice of kishke = 100 calories • 1 serving of potato kugel = 200 calories • 1 serving of lokshen kugel =
THE BALANCING BOCHUR: Sruli Englander* Height: 5'8 Starting weight: 180 pounds Current weight: 177 pounds Weight lost this week: 3 pounds I have to say that I’m actually getting used to this new way of life. I kept calling it a diet, but my mother and nutritionist pointed out that it’s so normal and doable that it’s actually not even a “diet.” I’m gonna admit that it’s fun to get the attention of all these people who know what I’m doing; it’s like I have a cheering squad of followers. An interesting thing happened from drinking so much water: My skin is starting to look better and my lips aren’t as dry! *name changed for privacy
200 calories • 5 slices of cold cuts = 100 calories • 1 small cup of soda: 100 calories x 3 meals = 300 calories • 1 serving of fresh salad with salad dressing and croutons = 200 calories • Tuna salad, egg salad and/or lox spread = 250 calories • Small scoop of ice cream =150 calories Which brings us to a grand total of over 5,000 calories in a 24-hour period. And with most of these calorie counts we rounded down, assumed small to average portion sizes and didn’t account for second helpings! Wow! So much food, and this doesn’t include kugel or cholent on Erev Shabbos, pizza or French fries on Motzei Shabbos or even Shabbos morning coffee and cake! So where do we start? Once we are conscious of how much we’re actually eating, we can begin to take a good look at it and see what is it that we really need and what
is extra. Do I really need two slices of challah at each meal, or is one enough (or can I eat a matzah instead, if sticking to one slice of challah is difficult)? Do I really need gefilte fish and salmon, or do I prefer one over the other? Can I do without the liver? The potato kugel? The heavy dessert? Identify where you can easily eliminate extras without feeling like you are depriving yourself. After cutting out the nonessentials, the next step is to replace. This part can be tricky if you aren’t the one doing the cooking, but see if some of these changes can be made: Oil- and mayonnaise-based dips can be swapped out for roasted and then blended garlic, eggplants or tomatoes. Potato and lokshen kugels can be replaced with healthier versions that limit the starch and fat content. Leaner cuts of meat can be used in your cholent. You can use egg whites for your egg salad and sliced turkey instead of salami or pastrami, and of course, drink only diet sodas or preferably, flavored seltzer. There are lots of creative ways to cut calories from the foods you love without noticing too much of a change in taste, and without going through too much extra trouble. The final step to keeping calories in check on Shabbos is portion control. For example, a small slice of challah, a tablespoon of dip,
a half slice of salmon and a scoop of cholent makes a great Shabbos lunch! Picture yourself walking away from a Shabbos seudah having enjoyed moderate portions of your favorite foods without feeling stuffed and regretful. Coming next week… What an ideal Shabbos eating plan would look like, and tips to make it happen! Stay tuned...

Parshas Chayei Sarah
By Tova Fried
IN HIS INTRODUCTION TO SEfer Shemos, the Ramban refers to Sefer Bereishis as the Sefer Hayetzirah — the Book of Creation. We generally understand the events in the first Parsha — Parshas Bereishis — to be the story of the world’s creation. However, the Ramban refers to the entire Sefer Bereishis as the Sefer Hayetzirah. Apparently, the story of the world’s creation continues throughout the entire Sefer Bereishis. This concept comes into clearer focus when understood in light of a statement of Chazal (Midrash Tanchuma Lech Lecha 9) brought by the Ramban (Bereishis 12:6): “Maaseh avos siman l’banim — the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children.” Hashem created the world with the Torah. The stories of the events in the lives of the Avos and Imahos are not just descriptive, but predictive. Encapsulated within each story about the Avos is an element of truth for us, their descendants. The thoughts, words and actions of the Avos are brought down in the Torah. Their every deed was an act of creation whose echo reverberates throughout history, laying the foundation for all the events that will occur to the Jewish people, for whom the world was created, until the ultimate geula. What took place for the Avos individually will ultimately take place for us communally. For example, a famine forced Avraham

Avinu to descend to Mitzrayim, where he experienced a time of struggle following the kidnapping of Sarah Imeinu, and ultimately the king of Mitzrayim sent him out with abundant wealth. Likewise, a famine forced the B’nei Yisroel to descend to Mitzrayim, where they experienced a time of struggle, and ultimately the king (Paroh) of Mitzrayim sent them out with great wealth. In this week’s Parsha, Yitzchak takes Rivka into the tent of his mother, Sarah, and he then feels comforted after the loss of his
parallels between Sarah’s tent and the Mishkan? What did the Avos (including Sarah) achieve, how did they achieve it, and what does this mean for us today? The Shem MiShmuel elucidates the correlation of Sarah’s tent and the Mishkan. In Sarah’s tent, a light burned from erev Shabbos to erev Shabbos. The kindling of each week’s light was drawn from the light of the previous week. This indicates how the Avos drew on the light of Shabbos and allowed it to permeate every day of the week. Each Shabbos added more light to
The stories of the events in the lives of the Avos and Imahos are not just descriptive, but predictive. mother. Rashi comments on this that “as long as Sarah was alive, a candle burned from one Erev Shabbos to the next, a blessing was found in the dough and a cloud hovered over the tent. When she died, these things ceased, and when Rivka arrived, they resumed.” (Rashi on Bereishis 24:67, citing Bereishis Rabbah 60:16) The Shem MiShmuel draws on the concept of “Maaseh avos siman l’bonim” to draw a correlation between the tent of Sarah and the Mishkan of Klal Yisroel. What Sarah achieved as an individual laid the groundwork for what Klal Yisroel would ultimately achieve as a community. What were the
the light from the previous Shabbos, leading the Avos on a spiritual ascent, climbing from Shabbos to Shabbos like rungs up a ladder. In the Mishkan, the westernmost light remained burning, and each day’s lights were drawn from it, which brought a dimension of the previous day’s light into the new day. A person’s spiritual growth from day to day should be cumulative, which each day’s work beginning where the previous day left off, like climbing a ladder one rung at a time — not starting each day at the bottom. Likewise, we should strive to draw on our previous strengths and keep climbing, allowing our accomplishments to
Hilchos Shabbos accumulate. The second miracle of Sarah’s tent was the blessing in her challah, which stayed fresh from Shabbos to Shabbos. This corresponds to the lechem hapanim (the showbread) which was always warm. Just as Sarah never grew stale in her avodas Hashem, whenever Klal Yisroel performed their avodah with vigor and freshness of spirit, this blessing was apparent in the Mishkan. Likewise, we too should strive to always bring a freshness to our avodas Hashem, and consequently merit Hashem’s blessing on our homes and in our batei midrash. The third blessing on Sarah’s tent was that a cloud hovered over it. Likewise, the Ananei HaKavod hovered over the Mishkan, and the presence of the Shechina was so real, it was almost palpable. The Shem Mishmuel suggests that just as the Shechina dwelled in the Mishkan, so did the Shechina dwell in Sarah’s tent. We traditionally understand “Maaseh avos siman l’bonim” to mean that we should study the lives of the Avos and strive to emulate their ways. This is certainly true, but we see from the Ramban and the Shem MiShmuel that the implications are profound for us, the descendants of these spiritual giants. Their achievements are imprinted in our spiritual DNA. Emulating their lives is not only wise advice for following a true and tried path — walking in their ways invokes powerful spiritual forces we inherited from them that are latent within each of us. May we merit to walk in their ways and come to reach a level of experiencing Hashem’s blessings in our homes and in our lives.

תיקון כלי The issur of tikkun keli ( )תיקון כליprohibits us from adding something to a nonfunctional object on Shabbos in order to render it functional. • Chazal tell us that filling quilts or pillows with fillers on Shabbos is assur, because this renders the quilts or pillows, together with the fillers, to become functional, and therefore they become a keli. • This is only if it is a filler which typically will stay in forever, so both together become a keli, but if one uses a filler that typically does not stay forever (like one will use clothing or towels), it is not assur. • Shoes without shoelaces are not considered functional. Therefore, putting shoelaces into shoes is comparable to putting fillers into quilts or pillows and is תיקון כלי. • Some poskim are of the opinion that it is muttar to thread a used shoelace from one worn shoe into another worn shoe, because both have already been used and are already a keli. The accepted opinion, is, however, that even used shoelaces may not be threaded into a different worn shoe. • If one has a need to change a shoelace on Shabbos, for example, if the shoelace tore on Shabbos, one may use a shoelace, provided it is threaded in a manner that the shoelaces would be removed to be rethreaded properly; for example, threading them the reverse way from bottom to top. • When one has any garment, even an old one, with a new loose belt made only for that particular garment (for example, a robe, tish beketche, jacket, etc.), one may not put the belt through the carriers for the first time on Shabbos, because the belt threaded into the garment renders the belt functional and turns it into a keli. Belts that can be used for multiple garments (for example men’s pants belts) are permitted to be put through the belt car-
riers, even if Shabbos is the first time it is being done, because it is not only used for this particular pants. • If a string of a garment that is knotted at the end, for example on a hood or a windbreaker, slips out of the casing, one may not put it back in on Shabbos, because Chazal were gozer that one should not make a knot at the end in order that it shouldn’t fall out. However, if the end of the string does not have a knot, but just has a piece of plastic or metal, it is muttar in such a case to thread the string back into the garment after it slipped out. • One may rethread a piece of string or elastic back into a garment, even using a safety pin, on condition that the hole is distinct and the string threads easily into the hole without requiring too much effort to be pushed in. • If one has a garment that closes with a string, for example, at the neckline or at the bottom of a sweater, and the style of the garment has several wide holes, and it is not distinguishable which one is for the string, one may not rethread the string into the garment even if the holes are wide. • It is assur to thread a piece of string back into the same garment even it had previously been in, if the hole is tight and it requires effort to thread the string through, since this would be considered tofer (sewing). This also applies to shoelaces on non-leather shoes such as sneakers etc. whose ends have fallen off, and one would have to exert effort to thread them back into the shoe. If the shoe has big reinforced holes, it is muttar to thread the shoelaces back in. • Inflating objects with air is considered creating a new keli. It is therefore assur to inflate beds, mattresses or chairs etc. on Shabbos. This issur applies even if one will deflate the object on Motzei Shabbos.

Fundraising Efforts Launched for Seriously Injured Tantzers Volunteer (VIN News) As Tantzers volunteer Zisha Rosenblum remains in a medically-induced coma, friends and family of the injured Boro Park resident are hard at work raising funds to help the Rosenblum family in their hour of need. Rosenblum was critically injured in an accident on the Palisades Parkway on November 3rd on his way home from a Wesley Hills party held to bring simcha to sick children and their families. Zelig Friedman, the head of the Tantzers group whose 250 men devote their spare time to gladdening the lives of others, described Rosenblum as a person whose life is “kulo chesed.” Rosen-
blum, said Friedman, is an integral part of the group and one of its original members. “Without him I was nothing,” said Friedman. “He and his brother are really the ones who are making this happen.” In addition to his work with Tantzers, Rosenblum has been a daily visitor to Maimonides Hospital for years, chatting with patients and delivering food packages. Known for his incredible warmth, Rosenblum is also a well known face at a 13th Avenue cell phone store in Boro Park. A non-Jewish employee at the
business decided to run a fundraiser of his own for Rosenblum, taping a sign that said “Help a goy reach his goal to help a Yid” to a cardboard box. Customers have been contributing generously to the cause, prompting employees to increase their fundraising goal from $10,000 to $20,000. The public is asked to daven for אלכסנדר זושא בן עליזה. Donations for the Rosenblum family can be mailed to the Yad Lelev Foundation, 25 Robert Pitt Drive, Monsey, N.Y. 10952 or made online at https://thechesedfund.com/cause/who-helps-thehelpers.
Anti-Semitic Graffiti Found in Pomona (The Journal News) Residents of a quiet block in Pomona woke up one day last week to find the words “No Jews” scrawled in orange spray paint in front of two homes that are currently listed for sale, with the identical hate message defacing a realtor’s sign. The incident took place on Carteret Drive near the Ramapo-Clarkstown border and was reported to the Ramapo Police Department which is continuing to investigate the incident. Within hours, the graffiti had been replaced by several hand-drawn hearts, a message of tolerance and acceptance drawn by one neighbor. Currently, there is only one Jewish family living on Carteret Drive, but there are a handful of others located on neighboring streets. Legislator Aron Wieder said that the disturbing incident does not represent the general sentiments of most area residents.
56 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 23, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
“Unfortunately, there is a small group of people that has engaged in hate,” said Wieder. “It is up to the rest of us to stand as one in the face of this repugnant belief system and behavior. I know the majority of county residents join with me in condemning these actions.” There is no place for hate in Rockland County, said County Executive Ed Day. “We take solace in knowing that the vast majority of people of Rockland County do not accept it, will stand against it and are good people looking for the same things for their families as everyone else is,” said Day.

Post-Election News Presidential Appointments So far, Trump has taken his time in choosing his Cabinet members. Over the course of the last week, he has met many potential candidates, but has announced the appointments of only a few executive branch heads. Following is the list of appointments he has made. Attorney General: Senator Jeff Sessions. Senator Sessions is from Alabama and is a top member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and before becoming a senator he was Attorney General of Alabama. The Attorney General, of course, heads the Justice Department. National Security Advisor: General Mike Flynn. General Flynn is a Democrat who was highly critical of Hillary Clinton. He is also strongly and vocally anti radical Islam, a position that lines up well with Trump’s ideology. CIA Director: Representative Mike Pompeo. Pompeo is a representative from Kansas who serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on intelligence and is close to VPElect Pence. There are still many positions to be filled, but Trump has said that he is in no rush to fill them.
President-elect Trump Meets the Media On Monday, Trump met with the members, including executives, of all major media networks. Although the meeting was off the record, it was reported that the media representatives had gone in thinking they would get an outline of what kind of access they might get in a Trump administration, but instead they got a washdown from Trump, who called them deceitful and dishonest, as he had done over and over again while campaigning. But after the meeting, Trump’s spokeswoman, Kellyanne Conway, told gathered reporters that the meeting had been “excellent.”
Trump Outlines His Executive Policies In a statement released on Monday, Donald Trump outlined some of his plans for his First Hundred Days in office with the main theme being Putting America First. Among them were several policies he had campaigned for, such as withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and canceling some EPA restrictions. He also said he’d formulate a rule that for every regulation put into place, two old regulations must be eliminated, develop a plan to protect America’s infrastructure from cyber attacks, look into visa program abuses and impose a five-year ban on executive officials from becoming lobbyists after leaving their positions.

CHAPTER 16
Sun on
Stone Recap: Dressed in her new coat and boots, Malka’la tries her hand at collecting in the grocery. She meets with some success — and the reality that this business is not easy. “SO I’LL TELL YOU OF 15 people who are well-to-do, they have enough. And they can give. You won’t tell them that I told you their names, of course. Right?” Malka’la nodded vigorously. “You’ll make an appointment and go over. Show up, tell them your story.” Malka’la nodded. She sat down at the supper table. Malka’la pulled the wad of papers closer to her and plucked a fruit from the crystal bowl that sat in the middle of the table. “No. Let me serve you supper,” Gella insisted. “It’s okay,” Malka’la said, wanting to focus instead on the papers at hand. “Wash. I’ll bring you soup.” “I don’t need. So, these are the people?” Gella gave Malka’la a plate anyway. She placed it on a charger in front of Malka’la. “Thank you. Should I call them before I go?” “Sometimes it’s not worth it. But I think if you call, you make your request more respectable, and it’s therefore honored with a larger donation. Try it both ways.” So she did. And here she was, at the door of Mr. Boden. His house looked... a pauper might have afforded himself something more grand. Well kept, the windows were solid in their sills, the grass was kept like a well-groomed man’s hair-

cut. From glimpses around the neighborhood on her rounds, she had seen houses. Houses with rounded cobblestoned driveways, well-lit with buffed lanterns. Houses with vast carpets of frozen grass. Grand doorways, big windows, cars parked. But they said he was rich. That he had hundreds of employees. That he gave generously, because to him, giving a thousand was like giving a penny. She had to knock. An older man opened. He had a nondescript white shirt, creased at the shoulders, and house slippers on his

Had he decided to continue eating his leisurely dinner with his wife, while she agonized near the door? Was she even in the right house? And did they know why she was standing here, doubting herself? She was starting to feel scared. Off to the side of the hall where she stood, a cavernous dining room led into another darker space, a missing tooth she

The house grew eerie. In the shadows, hardly discernible in the murky darkness of the house, she could smell the scent of oldness, of stagnant wood. Down the hallway, Malkala could hear a chair scrape, and then the murmur of low voices. She continued to stand. She quieted the urge to fidget, and just stood, at attention. couldn’t make out. She cleared her throat. I’m going. If he doesn’t come back, I’m going. But she couldn’t. It was already two weeks of being here. She was tired. Perhaps he would help her. They said he would. Gella said he was very wealthy, that he helped many. “Antschuldig?” she called out. She heard some scrapes, another low murmur, then a shuffle. Silence, again. In rooms around her, clocks marched forward, tick, tick, tick.

That short shriek she had gotten to know in Gella’s basement, a ghost yelling unpredictably, electronically, when the house grew silent — “The smoke detector,” Gella had said — flitted through the house, then silenced. He stood in a doorway in the hall, framed by dark gray. “Come,” he said. She followed him. It was so gloomy in this house. Why? He showed her through a door, then followed. The door was just a small hallway with steps leading downstairs. The downstairs, as well, was ill-lit, a single orange bulb illuminating a far corner. Something in her balked. Why should she follow his orders to go downstairs? She should turn and run. It was too late now. Because he was behind her. She should have run before. Should have listened to her gut. Should have gone before it was too late. He followed behind her. She felt imprisoned. She should have taken a driver to drive her around and wait for her downstairs, but she decided that not to this address, not here,
didn’t know how to reach her here. And Gella? Would she worry? Or would she would just assume that the Yerushalmi of so many other misunderstandings had left without even saying goodbye? “I came here to collect,” she turned around, midstep. “My children are hungry. That’s why I came here.” He pointed his chin to indicate she keep going. She took another step down. A man would have never gone for this. He would say, “Excuse me,” and leave. Push aside the old man and leave. A woman? Collecting? She could see why it wasn’t done, no matter that she was the man and the woman and the breadwinner, everything, and that her children were malnourished and starving and they depended on her, only on her, father and mother that she was. She couldn’t leave now, brush past him and flee. He looked too fierce, even in his tiredness and advanced age.
Would she just assume that the Yerushalmi of so many other misunderstandings had left without even saying goodbye? here there was too much money at stake, she would just walk over by herself so as not to have to give a percentage to a driver. Nobody was waiting outside for her. Nobody would ever know if something were to happen. Even her parents
They said he had run many businesses. They said he had the willpower of a person who got to where he was going. But who was he? Why was he taking her here? “This way,” he pointed with his
chin again, and she noticed that on the left, where she hadn’t even dared move her head, were several doors, one of them a heavy, steel door. She obeyed now. There was no use fighting. I sinned, she told the Eibishter, as she accepted that she was now in the hands of this man whose bones jutted out in edges in his elbows, his wrists, his jaws. I come before you full of shame. Her skin drew together, waiting, bracing. “This door,” he leaned over to open the steel door before her. He fished in his pocket, drawing out a single key. The fear was gripping her, that familiar fear she was most afraid of, most vulnerable to, most susceptible to. Her pupils grew wide in the darkness, her breath shallow and thinned. She was stuck here, too weak to fight, too scared to move. The door was unlocked and swung open. It led to another small staircase. “Here,” he said. “Ich ken nisht,” she whimpered. To be continued... SEMI-BLENDED VEGETABLE SOUP This is a creamy and thick soup, chockfull of wholesome flavors and nutrients, a great choice to welcome your rednosed children off the school and cheder buses on a frosty winter day. Note: This soup will thicken considerably when refrigerated. It is necessary to add water before reheating.
PREP TIME: 15 minutes. TOTAL COOKING TIME: approximately 2 hours
INGREDIENTS: 1 large white onion
½ turnip
1 large Spanish onion
16 cups of water
¼ cup oil
1 24-oz packet frozen butternut squash cubes
3 garlic cloves 4 cello carrots 1 zucchini 2 sweet potatoes 1 parsnip
1 cup barley ½ cup red lentils ¼ tsp. white pepper 2 T. salt
DIRECTIONS: 1. Chop onions into large pieces. Place in heated 8-quart pot with oil. 2. Peel and chop rest of vegetables into large chunks. Place over onion. Saute for one hour on a medium flame. Do not mix, in order for onions to caramelize. 3. Add water and rest of ingredients. Bring to boil, lower flame, and cook for 40 minutes. 4. When done, blend with immersion blender, just until the large chunks are broken down. This gives unsurpassed texture to the soup.
Seasoned Mother: Have this soup ready early, serve as soon as the kids walk in from school, and proceed with the main dish later, after supper preparations and playtime are over.

Having discussed various issues that can arise in the construction of a two-family home, we turn to the exciting possibilities of townhouses which can present certain challenges but also offer practically limitless options. Townhouse living comes with certain advantages; in addition to not having anyone living over or under you, you have full control over your unit. Best of all, townhouse owners have the option of using all three levels for their own living space, or can turn some or all of their first floor into an accessory apartment that provides a rental income.
TALK OF THE TOWN
THE TOWNHOUSE UNDERTAKING A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT WITH another family on a shared lot can seem daunting, but a little advance planning can prevent endless problems down the road. While the exterior facade of side by side homes should be the same, and proper soundproofing between the two units is essential, there is no reason why the both interiors have to be carbon copies of each other, giving each family the liberty to construct their ideal home. In this case, each of the two halves of the attached townhouse consisted of 2,600 square feet and both families agreed that the most logical plan of action was to dedicate slightly more area to their downstairs living space. Plans were drawn up that allocated 1,350 square feet to the first and second levels and 1,250 square feet to the third. How to best put the available space to use? Think about your daily lifestyle and, starting with your entrance, go room by room, envisioning how each one will be used and what kind of storage space would best suit your needs. Make a list of your requirements and preferences for every room so that you can incorporate those details into your plans. While both families in this project elected to turn their first floor into an accessory apartment and used identical plans for their third floor, each had their own ideas of an ideal main floor layout. Because Mrs. Bloom* of Unit #1 has a family of boys, she knew that she needed a study on the main level. We made sure to leave a comfortable amount of space for a proper entryway and positioned the stairs to the third level slightly farther back than usual, leaving room for a study. We also kept her playroom near the kitchen, but in a totally separate room, at her request. Mrs. Rabinowitz* in Unit #2 wanted to maximize open space on her first floor. We configured her lower level to include a vestibule with closets as well as a spacious opening to the second floor. An opening between the dinette and the playroom gives the Rabinowitz’s the ability to combine the two spaces, giving them an impressive 26 feet of space when the family gathers for simchos. Should the need for a study ever arise, the Rabinowitz’s can always shave off one room from the downstairs accessory apartment and use that space as a study.

The confidence to face new challenges . An investment for life
November 23, 2016 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 79 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Obviously, every family has different needs and what worked for the Blooms and the Rabinowitzes may not work for you. Keep these factors in mind when planning a living area: • Have ample space in your entryway to avoid traffic, a practical layout that makes your house feel spacious. • Include enough closets to accommodate your family’s needs. • Ensure easy access from the kitchen to dining area, an important design element that should never be overlooked. • Install sufficient lighting near the stairs to avoid nighttime falls. The upstairs living space in the townhouse includes five bedrooms, two bathrooms, one toilet and a laundry room for each unit. When designing a space that is both useful and comfortable consider: • Situating the master bedroom far away from the stairs for maximum privacy. • Locating one of the bedrooms near the master bedroom to be used as a nursery, if necessary. • Sizing each room appropriately for the number of people who will be using it. • Putting closet doors in locations that will not interfere with furniture. • Placing a full bathroom near at least two bedrooms. Consider adding an extra door to one of the bedrooms, giving guests or teens private access to the bathroom. • Leaving a minimum of four square feet of space in front of steps leading to the main level. Having an upstairs laundry room is extremely practical, giving you the ability to wash clothing and linens near the space where they are used and stored. If you have enough space, make the laundry room large enough so that all folding and hanging can happen in the laundry room, keeping your bedrooms clutter free. It is important to remember that planning ahead and taking these small steps in the initial phases of your construction project will hopefully prevent future disappointments. Don’t hesitate to reach out for professional help during this all-important planning stage. You are investing so much time, money and effort on your construction project, that spending a few dollars more in the early stages is a smart investment that can yield big payoffs for years to come. For many people in our fast-paced society, a good night’s sleep is but a dream. With contemporary living being a far cry from the days in which people retired with the sun, modern man pushes the bounds of the circadian rhythm in the attempt to do more, see more, and be more. And once that natural rhythm is lost, it’s hard to get back on track. Enter the world of sleep aides. With the global sleep aide market raking in over $580 million in the year 2014 alone, there’s clearly a lot of tired people walking the planet, desperate for something to help them mellow out and settle down. For some, relief comes in the form of prescription medication. Others, however, opt for over-the-counter (OTC) options in the assumption that non-prescriptives are safer and less addictive. One of the most popular OTC options is melatonin.
Mommy’s Little Helper “I give melatonin very infrequently and in very small doses,” Shira* tells me, “But there is a time and place, like after Yom Tov or when the clock is moved. The body has trouble regulating, and it gets my kids back on track.” Shira’s not the only one that feels this way. Many parents, in fact, turn to these easily obtainable and often chewable little “helpers,” allowing their children to be lulled into a melatonin-induced slumber. For themselves, as well, adults purchase melatonin in the hopes of sweet sleep. But where does melatonin come from, and does it actually work? And more importantly, is it safe?
What Is Melatonin? Often believed to be a vitamin or mineral, melatonin is actually neither. Touted as a natural dietary supplement, melatonin looks relatively benign when lining the shelves of a vitamin shop. The truth, however, is that melatonin
84 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 23, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
is nothing like the helpful herbs available for purchase, because it is, in fact, something completely different. Melatonin is a hormone. Much like its daytime counterpart cortisol, melatonin is a hormone related to stress and is produced naturally by the human body — though their mechanisms are drastically different. While cortisol energizes and enables the body to handle stress, melatonin has more of a shut-down effect. Commercial melatonin is either extracted from the hormone-producing glands of animals, like bovine, or created in a laboratory with synthetic ingredients.
Does Melatonin Work as a Sleep Aide? While many people are devoted users of melatonin, claiming that it helps them fall asleep, melatonin has actually never been proven to relieve insomnia. The quality and length of sleep when using melatonin has also been shown to be comparable to sleep without ingestion of the commercial hormone. Why
then, do so many people stock this product in the medicine cabinet as the turn-to supplement for days when sleep just doesn’t beckon?
How the Hormone Works Surprisingly, melatonin natural to the body has little to do with sleep and everything to do with darkness. Every evening as dark settles upon the world, melatonin levels in the human being begin to rise, eventually reaching its peak around 3 a.m. This is because the body naturally interprets darkness as a significant stress to the body, and responds by releasing the hormone in question: melatonin. A common misconception is that melatonin is a sleep hormone, when it is actually an antistress hormone. Melatonin, in the attempt to relax the body, causes it to feel less focused and slightly disoriented, allowing a person to more easily succumb to sleep. It is a sleep regulator that works by sending a message to the brain that slumber is appropriate at the given time, due to the stressful nature of dark. It is not a sleep initiator on its own. Natural melatonin production in the body can be disrupted by light, most significantly those of the white (like light bulbs) or blue (technology) origins. Even if the hour is extremely late, but the lights are still bright, melatonin production will be minimal, though it is possible for a person to sleep. In short, though melatonin is intrinsically connected to night and the circadian rhythm, it does not directly induce sleep. When taken

in pill form, the “sleepiness” felt is actually a mild stupor and cognitive impairment that is the body’s way of responding to stressful stimuli.
So… Is It Safe? As of yet the FDA has not approved use of melatonin as a sleep aid, though the FDA does allow it to be sold as a dietary supplement because it can be found in certain foods, such as cherries, oranges and tomatoes. That being said, it is the only orally administered hormone allowed to be dispensed in America without a prescription. Hormonal balance, however, is a delicate system that takes place naturally inside of the body. Without FDA monitoring, many companies sell melatonin in excess of even 20 times what the body produces naturally. Sadly, this can wreak havoc on growing children’s bodies, as

KEEP THE ROOM COOL.
Right when you wake up, open those shades or get outdoors. Melatonin levels will drop, helping to regulate the hormonal balance. Later, when the body begins producing melatonin again, your brain will hear the bedtime message.

well as people of any age. Melatonin in normal, internally produced amounts is vital to immune system function, and acts as an anti-inflammatory. It’s also been shown to be an effective deterrent to yena machlah, slowing the rate of spread of some types of the dreaded disease. In fact, night workers who have significantly lower rates of melatonin production have been shown to have a higher chance of contracting specific types of dangerous growth, lo aleinu. When taken in pill form, however, risk of that delicate hormonal balance being disrupted is of large concern, and carries the additional risk that the body can become accustomed (read: addicted) to even high levels of melatonin, causing the body to no longer respond to lower doses of — or even be able to produce it’s own — melatonin. As Dr. Esther Apter says, “Whenever we take a hormone from outside the body, like synthetic melatonin, our own bodies stop producing their own melatonin. It’s a much better idea to take a natural supplement that stimulates the body’s own production of melatonin.” She also recommends going to sleep early on a regular ba-

sis for optimal melatonin stimulation, as well as herbal options that contain St. John’s wart, valerian root, and valocordin, like her own mixture called “Calm and Sleep.” Certain foods also have the power to boost melatonin, with pineapple the forerunner of the bunch. According to one study, pineapple naturally raised melatonin levels by 266%, while bananas rated second at about a 180% increase. And yet, synthetic hormones are still being welcomed into many a home, perhaps due to simple marketing and the naivete of the masses. Perhaps most telling about the true nature of the pop drug, is that when this writer reached out to manufacturers of commonly sold melatonin, no answer was the only answer received to my inquiries.
On the Flip Side... “I had kids who couldn’t sleep, and I consulted with some of the most health-minded people out there, and I was told that melatonin is safe to give, because there is nothing worse than not being able to sleep,” Shaindy*, a well-known alternative health practitioner tells me, admitting that she gives her own children the hormone up to five times a week. Shocked though
MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS’ TAKE ON MELATONIN Considering the small advances melatonin provides to the timing of sleep, and considering what we know about how melatonin works in the body, it is not worth the risk to child and adolescent safety.” Professor David Kennaway, Head of the Circadian Physiology Laboratory at the University of Adelaide’s Robinson Research Institute.
I know it’s hard. I know we all want our kids to sleep well at night, but a pill isn’t always the answer.” Dr. Johnson-Arbor of Hartford Hospital
Professor Kennaway warns that providing melatonin supplements to children may result in serious side effects when the children are older. “The use of melatonin as a drug for the treatment of sleep disorders for children is increasing and this is rather alarming,” Professor Kennaway says. He adds that the United States is the only country where melatonin is completely unregulated. “It’s considered to be a ‘dietary supplement,’ not a regulated drug, and is therefore readily available,” he says. Kennaway has been researching melatonin for the past 40 years, and feels these concerns have largely been ignored throughout the world.
Melatonin is an important tool in the treatment of sleep disorders in children, and because it is naturally derived, there is a widespread perception that it is safe. However, I have become concerned by the frequency of its use, especially in an unsupervised way.” Craig Canapari MD, Director at Yale Pediatric Sleep Center
Dr. Canapari writes that melatonin sales have doubled in the past ten years, increasing from $90 million in 2007 to $260 million in 2012, and he is worried that its widespread availability has led to some parents using it as a shortcut to good sleep practices.
The essential question to explore in your child’s case is why he is having trouble sleeping.” Rubin Naiman, Ph.D., sleep and dream specialist at the University of Arizona
Dr. Naiman says that since the effects of extra melatonin on development are unknown, sleep specialists have cautioned against using melatonin for children. He notes that some preliminary data suggests that melatonin may be effective in helping developmentally delayed children, especially autistic kids, with sleep problems, but he said that addressing the underlying contributors is central to any long-term strategy.
Dr. Johnson-Arbor urges parents to think twice before resorting to melatonin. “It is a hormone and it definitely can have these severe interactions that you might not think of, just looking at the pill on the counter and buying it over the counter, thinking it is safe.”
Melatonin is not a sleeping pill.” Dr. Michael Breus, “The Sleep Doctor”
Like many other practitioners who have researched this supplement, Dr. Breus believes melatonin is a bad answer to insomnia. “This is the really important thing you should understand about melatonin: Melatonin is a sleep and body clock regulator – not a sleep initiator. Melatonin works with your biological clock by telling your brain when it is time to sleep. Melatonin does not increase your sleep drive or need for sleep.”
THE MONSEY VIEW / 87
I am, on the latter point regarding sleep, I do concur. How can the body heal from daily wear and tear or even infrequent trauma without sleep? A human being can survive over a month without food, but only a few days without restful slumber. Sleep is, after all, the most significant cornerstone of a well-functioning human being. According to Dr. Sondra Heiligman of Baltimore, a pediatrician specializing in endocrinology, there are certain instances in which medical professionals can legitimately recommend use of melatonin, though it should not be the immediate go-to option. “I propose first, long before suggesting melatonin, looking into all the normal factors to see if there are negative habits and rituals, and then work on sleep methods to help them fall asleep. Is the room dark? Is the child too hot or too cold? Of course, you have to rule out certain conditions like sleep apnea or sleep night terrors.” She says, “There is a place for melatonin’s usage in certain circumstances, but it’s not my first recommendation when discussing sleep problems with parents.” Even when prescribing melatonin, it comes with a measure of discomfort. “Because it is ‘natural’ and is readily available, there isn’t as much supervision of its use in individual cases,” adds Dr. Heiligman. “It may come up as an option, however, when other methods have been reviewed.”
To Pop or Not? Though the evidence seems stacked against the use of the hormone on a daily basis, perhaps, in special circumstances melatonininduced stupor may actually be a decent option when weighed against the risks of long-term sleep deprivation. Only you can ask yourself: Should I pop this pill, or shouldn’t I? As for me, I think I’ll skip the stupor. *names have been changed for privacy

I often find it difficult to get up in the morning due to sleepiness
I am often very drowsy at school or at work
I regularly cut my sleep by several hours as compared with what my body seems to need I can’t wake up without an alarm clock
I rely on coffee to get me through the day
I can’t pull through the day without a nap
I often experience my day through a fog
I would think it’s safe to assume that 90% of readers will feel that at least one of the pointers apply to them. And it’s not that any of us are up at night reading novels, playing games, or wasting time. Life is just so busy.
THE MONSEY VIEW / 95
THE KIDS HAVE TOO MUCH HOMEWORK. THE TEENS HAVE THAT TOO, WITH THE ADDITION OF numerous social or learning obligations. The working girls have responsibilities and simchos to attend. Housewives are overwhelmed by the many roles they juggle simultaneously. The men’s rigid schedule has no wiggle room. The mothers are trying to run their ship, and so much has to be done only when the house settles down, and that happens so late! Throw in events and simchos and all the must-dos vying for first place on our to-do lists, and one is tempted to forgo sleep altogether and work around the clock. They’re not even excuses. The reasons for our sleep deprivation are so valid. The day always ends too soon, so do we have a choice other than snitching some hours from the night? The reasons notwithstanding, sleep does not get the respect it deserves. The more pointers you agreed with from the previous page, the lower sleep is on your list of priorities. And we’re not really to blame. Starting with our nation’s leaders, our society looks at sleep as a thing to be pushed aside and given the attention only as a last resort.
Former President Bill Clinton, when running for president, freely admitted that he went 48 hours without sleep. There was too much at stake to “waste” time undercover.
President Barack Obama’s bedtime is at 1:00 AM and he’s already up at 7:00 am, gently prodded awake by the White House secretary. And this is only on the nights when there are no emergencies.
President-elect Donald Trump credits his financial success to sleeping only three to four hours each night. “How does somebody who’s sleeping 12 to 14 hours a day compete with someone who’s sleeping three to four?” he asked.
Is it any wonder that sleep is not respected enough? We get the not-such-subtle message that needing sleep is a sign of weakness, and we really ought to transcend this lowly human need and push ourselves to do more and sleep less. According to a study by the CDC of working people, 36% get fewer than six hours of shut-eye each night. That means that a large chunk of Americans are terribly sleep deprived. Not that we needed some study to tell that to us! We feel it in our bones and hear it from anyone we come in contact with over the course of our day. People seem not to realize, or not want to realize, that sleep isn’t just a form of rest and that a good, solid night is not indulgence! Sleep plays a critical physiological function and is indispensable to our development and ability to perform. Those who do not sleep enough do not tap into their full intellectual capabilities.
HOW MANY HOURS OF SHUTEYE? In February 2015, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) convened experts of sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology to reach a consensus from the broadest range of scientific disciplines to determine the scientifically grounded guidelines on the amount of sleep we need a night. Following are their recommendations.

Is it important that I put in my recommended hours at a specific time, or can I sleep from 2:00 to 10:00 a.m. and have my sleeping needs met? We all have received the advice, “An hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after,” at one point or another. Although the adage is not necessarily rooted in factual evidence, it is sourced from a correct theory. The quality of sleep does shift at one point of the night; it just doesn’t occur at midnight. Sleep is a cycle of phases, a back-and-forth shift between rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. During REM sleep, vivid dreams occur as the memories, and thoughts from the day are processed. During non-REM sleep, many crucial restorative functions occur, and in its deepest phase, the brain recovers from its daily activities, repairing the damage the body has incurred during the day. During sleep you experience 90-minute cycles, which start with non-REM sleep followed by REM sleep. Oddly, the ratio of non-REM-to-REM sleep within these 90-minute cycles changes across the night, regardless of when you go to bed. Early in the night (between the hours of 11pm and 3am), the majority of those cycles are comprised of deep non-REM sleep and very little REM sleep. Yet, in the second half of the night (the hours between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.), this balance changes; the 90-minute cycles are comprised of more REM sleep together with a lighter form of non-REM sleep. Going to bed too late, then, will deprive you of a chunk of the restorative functions that make you productive and alert. So if you’re not making it to bed before midnight, so be it. But make sure you’re packing in good solid, non-REM-filled sleep before the clock strikes three...

IS “EARLY TO BED” FOR EVERYONE? The division of people into “morning larks” and “night owls” is based on our individual circadian rhythms — our internal body clock that keeps us going. Each of us has a natural rhythm that we should follow. Our body tells us when it’s tired and should be waking up (without an alarm clock!) when it is fully recharged. Going to sleep at 10:00 or even 11:00 is not for everyone. “It’s a mistake to go to bed too early,” clinical sleep researcher Rafael Pelayo said. “Trying to go to sleep when your body wants to be awake is like swimming upstream.” In other words, if you’re fighting your natural rhythm, forcing yourself to go to bed early is only going to make you anxious about not being able to fall asleep. According to insomnia researcher Allison Siebern from Stanford University, the best time for a person to go to sleep is the hour when they feel the sleepiest. And once you determine when your sleep hour is, get into schedule, hitting the sack fifteen minutes before your prime sleeping time.

NO ALTERNATIVE TIME TOSLEEPSLEEP! CYCLES Around the globe, among different nations and cultures, it seems there’s one thing that all of humanity agrees upon — that we go to sleep at night and stay awake by day… But not everyone. The vast majority of the world is MONOPHASIC, sleeping once in a 24-hour cycle. But there are individuals and groups who find who find that a POLYPHASIC sleeping pattern, those involving multiple sleeping phases in a 24-hour period, work best for their lifestyle and schedule.
FREE-RUNNING SLEEP If you simply recharge your phone when it’s low on juice, why can’t you do the same? think people who believe in free-running sleep. Basically, they keep going until they feel tired, and then take a nap or turn in for the night when they feel they need to sleep. This is not recommended, as our body is naturally inclined to a 24-hour cycle and not a workand-recharge system.
BIPHASIC CYCLE
ingly, many who’ve tried it reverted to monophasic sleeping patterns after reporting boredom (what really should they be doing 22 hours a day?), being out of sync with their family’s schedule, and of course, crushing tiredness that caused them to do things like crashing cars and totally not living in the moment. Each of these cycles have a period of adaptation, where the person undergoes a “zombie mode” where normal cognitive function is severely impaired, until his body adapts to minimal sleeping times. It is unsure if and how it affects the health of people adapted to that lifestyle, but it can’t be too beneficial! FYI: When did Thomas Edison invent the 1,093 patents attributed to his genius? While his contemporaries slept! Edison was a polyphasic sleeper, relying on naps throughout the day to increase his waking time.
EVERYMAN CYCLE This cycle consists of four sleeps in a 24hour cycle: a 3.5-hour spell of core sleep and three 20-minute naps across the day.
This cycle, common in Israel, other Mediterranean countries and in Latin America, consists of a split sleeping pattern: 5-6 hours of sleep at night and a 1.5-hour nap after midday. It is not proper to ring the doorbell or call on the phone after lunch in those regions.
DYMAXION CYCLE
POLYPHASIC CYCLES
UBERMAN CYCLE
In this class are Everyman, Dymaxion and Uberman cycles, the Everyman being the least sleep-depriving of the three, but nothing that you’d want to try! Polyphasic cycles are tried by people who feel sleep is a waste of time, and there’s so much to be done instead of recharging. Not surpris-
This cycle consists of 6 to 8 equidistant naps across the day, each lasting 20 minutes.
This cycle consists of 4 half-hour-naps throughout the day, one every 6 hours.
FYI: Leonardo da Vinci followed the Uberman sleep cycle.

A Bit of Mattress History The first waterbed is invented in Persia. People fill animal skin with water.
First mattresses are made of leaves, grass and straw. Animal skins are used over it as binding. Beds are invented to raise mattresses off the ground away from pests and dirt.

In Ancient Rome mattresses define classes. The peasants sleep on hay, and the nobles on feathers. Early-1700 mattresses are first filled with wool or cotton.
1960-70s: Adjustable beds become popular in homes in the U.S. NASA invents cushion to protect astronauts at takeoff, and that becomes material used for memory foam mattresses.
2009: Temperaturemoderating mattresses invented to aid temperaturesensitive sleepers
1930-1950s: Inner spring mattresses with coils and airbeds are invented and readily available for consumer purchase.

Mattresses must be able to withstand an open flame for 30 seconds. The law aims to reduce mattress fires from cigarettes, candles and other dangers. The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates that mattresses meeting these requirements can save up to 270 lives and 1,330 injuries per year.

“SHE’S GORGEOUS!” I HEARD my doctor gush as she peeked at the newborn baby lying in the bassinet next to me. “I’ve seen thousands of babies, but this little girl is the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen.” I smiled, my heart bursting with maternal pride. “You know what?” she continued. “I have six-month-old boy… Let’s make a shidduch!” Chuckling at the idea, knowing that we couldn’t foresee the future, I looked down at my darling daughter. One thing I knew for sure: the doctor was right; she was gorgeous, the Gerber babe incarnate. Being a first-time mother, I couldn’t get enough of my newborn and kept her next to me for hours on end. Running on an adrenaline high, I stared and stared at the baby’s perfect features, rarely peeking at the clock. Visitors came and went, meals were delivered, nursing shifts changed and yet, I was still awake and cuddling my baby. “Please dear, can I please take your baby to the nursery for just a few hours so you can sleep a little?” the kindly yiddishe nurse begged me, worried about the twenty-four hours that had already ticked by with nary a wink of sleep. By that time the adrenaline level was finally dropping and I was actually becoming slightly drowsy. But to send away my baby? Never! Didn’t I know what had happened to so many Yemenite babies in the not-so-distant

past? Hadn’t I heard of switched children, even baby burglaries? “We have a very secure safety system, with double-locking doors, and matching bracelets,” she tried to reassure me. “And honestly, a mother who hasn’t slept for a long time and holds her baby has a danger of dropping the child, or rolling over and squishing it. Please, let yourself take a nap and we’ll make sure she stays safe.” Well, I am feeling kind of shaky… “Okay,” I finally acquiesced. “But just a quick nap, until the next feeding.” A nod of her head, and I watched the nurse wheel my baby. I finally gave in to the beckoning world of slumber. ***** “Mrs., I’m sorry to wake you, but your baby won’t stop crying. She must be hungry.” Barely opening my eyes, I felt my newborn dumped into my arms as a nurse I’d never seen before shuffled out of the room. It had been less than forty-five minutes that I’d been sleeping, and now my baby was back. She had eaten right before she left, and I knew she wasn’t hungry. The second she settled into my arms, the little one stopped crying. Snuggled up with
Mommy, she settled down for a nap. That’s all you wanted, shefeleh. Just to be with Mommy, not some stranger. That’s how it was the rest of the hospital stay; baby cuddles, Mommy cuddles back. No sleep anywhere in sight. By the time Friday night rolled around I was a wreck. My baby having been born on Tuesday morning, I hadn’t slept more than a catnap since Monday. “I can’t do it anymore,” I told my husband, my body shivering with exhaustion. The adrenaline depleted long ago, I had been surviving for several days on sheer willpower. Now that, too, was gone. “If I don’t sleep right now, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it ain’t gonna be pretty,” I promised him, feeling as though I was going to both faint and vomit. “You want me to take care of the baby? Me? I don’t know what to do with her!” he insisted, but seeing the way I looked he realized he had to do something. Nearly hyperventilating at the thought of diaper changes, cooing, burping and worse yet, the noise of crying, Mr. Genius came up with a brilliant solution. “She’s a girl right?” he said. “Watch this.” Picking up that gorgeous little peckele of non-stop cuddling joy, he looked her square in the eye.
“Baby, if you sleep this whole entire night and let Mommy feel like a human again, Tatty is going to buy you a bracelet. A really pretty one. You hear? No sleep, no bracelet.” Giving her a peck on the cheek, the newly crowned Tatty laid her back into the bassinet and walked out of the room. Yeah right. Like that’s ever going to work… I thought to myself as the fuzziness overcame me. Hours later I jumped up with a start. Panicking, I realized that it had been a long time since I’d last heard from my darling. Leaning over the bassinet I saw the up and down motion of a breathing babe, and let out a sigh of relief. She’s okay. She’s really okay. And I feel almost normal. Just need a drop more sleep… Seven hours later the cry of a hungry little girl woke a now-rested Mommy, telling her it was time for a new day to begin. Stretching, I looked up to see the lopsided grin of my husband. “Told you she’s a real girl. All you had to do was offer jewelry!” My husband giggled and grabbed his tallis bag, heading out to daven. As for that little girl, after receiving her bracelet, she never slept another full night again, until she was fourteen months old. And now, seven years later, jewelry still makes her eyes light up. Because you know, that’s the key to a girl’s heart… and the key to a good night of sleep!

Real Estate What Affects Home Value BEN AND DEVORAH HAVE SAVED a significant amount of money and are deciding if they should purchase a home now. In the discussion of them qualifying for the mortgage loan, of course, house price came up. Their budget is limited (they are in good company), and they are debating whether to stretch over their means for a “better” house or whether to buy something less expensive. Devorah wanted to know what makes one house “better” than another. What factors affect the market value of a home? Here are five things that adversely affect a home’s value: • SIZE. A larger home is usually worth more than a smaller home. Some homes have bedrooms that are very small, and a bedroom set cannot fit in, and the dining room and kitchen sizes are very important to a new buyer. A home needs to be able to accommodate furniture, floor space etc.
• LOCATION. We have all heard the old adage about “location...location...location...” determining the value of real estate. The “hottest” areas are the most expensive, but let’s go even deeper; within a specific area, why would one home be in a better location than another? That brings us to the third thing: • BUSY STREET. According to Trulia, a home on a busy street sells from 10% to 15% less than a home on a quiet street. What goes on outside of the home affects the home’s value. An appraisal term used here is “external obsolescence.” A few examples of external obsolescence are homes near train tracks, next to commercial buildings, underneath high tension wires, bordering the highway… • CONDITION. A home that is rundown or has a messy yard, or if the inside is very dated, will sell for less than another home that is neat and clean with a fresh coat of paint. A realtor once told me that a front door that needs paint is a huge turnoff for a new
120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 23, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
buyer. It’s the first sight that greets their eyes. Of course, if the bathrooms and kitchen aren’t functioning and the roof is leaking, this condition will sorely affect the value of the home.
When a buyer is purchasing a home, there is always compromise.
• HOUSE HAS NO MAZEL. Rarely do we hear of this, but if a tragedy happened in a home or if a home is reportedly haunted, some people won’t purchase the home. When a buyer is purchasing a home, there is always compromise. Homes with the above detractors will sell, because there will be a borrower who will com-
promise on location for price or purchase a home that is “haunted” but gorgeous, or purchase a home next to the highway or wires because of location etc… When a bank reviews an appraisal, which is a report that determines the value of a property, they look to see what adjustments were made by the appraiser for condition, location and external obsolescence. Unless a home is not in livable condition, usually the above factors do not affect a mortgage being granted. There is one caveat, though, and some mortgages, especially government mortgages, are very strict on this: If a home has a “bad neighbor,” such as a landfill, power plant, or any business that can negatively affect the environment, a mortgage cannot be granted!
