YOUR VOICE A SAD NEW TREND Should we not be bothered by the new trend of ¾ sleeves on kallah gowns? This trend has never before taken place in our history. The beginning of a lifetime should be celebrated with utmost kedusha, and this style doesn’t fit the occasion. The tzaddik, the Teshuos Chein, promised his granddaughter that if she lengthened her sleeves of her vort dress, he would give her a bracha to have banim tzaddikim v’talmidei chachamim. The Chazon Ish’s mother could not concentrate in shul one day because a woman’s wrist was showing. We are not at such a madreiga, but b’yom hachuppah we need to be more stringent. D. Feld

YOUR VOICE: THE CLEANING CRISIS DON’T BE SO TRUSTING I have a sweet lady who cleans in my house and sometimes helps me out with the kids. I had to run out to do an errand, and since my newborn was sleeping, it was so much more convenient to leave her under my cleaning lady’s supervision and not shlep her out in the cold for this little while. I asked some neighbors to pop in, and my husband also made sure to make a stop at home. I felt like it was safe, and even left my valuables and wallet in their regular places. She left my house at 1:00p.m. A while later, I got a call from my credit card company. They wanted to approve some unusual charges from that afternoon. There were charges from Nanuet shops — Wendy’s, Kmart and Macy’s starting from 1:30 and on. Apparently, she helped herself to a credit card and took advantage of a free Thanksgiving shopping spree. Is your cleaning lady Mary? Be careful, she may do the same to you. No Longer So Trusting
A PLAN I’m glad you took up the issue of cleaning help. I do hope that by working together we can accomplish much. First, I’d like to present a plan for keeping prices down, and second I’d like to tackle the problem of “come and go” help. My suggestion is that we create a payment plan for all cleaning help. For example: NOT SUCH GREAT HELP that you are willing to keep for a better price: $8-9 This gives balabustes on a small budget the ability to get help at a better rate – if they are willing to endure the newbies, to give them

Should speak some and understand most English Should work at a solid, quick pace and follow instructions AFTER TWO YEARS of devoted work, she gets raised to $11 AFTER FOUR YEARS, she gets raised to $12, which is the ceiling price. A balabuste who does not wish to raise, may have to give reference to the lady’s next job so she can get the raise there and start again with a newer woman. This will make the cleaning lady stick with her job for two years or four so she can earn a raise. Otherwise she will “come and go,” demanding more money from the next balabuste. WHO SETS THE RULES? When a cleaning lady says, “I take 11 dph,” or “You have to pay me a taxi” she is setting the rules. It’s your turn to say “We pay $10 and we do not pay taxis.” If this is the rule throughout the community and we all stick to it, she’ll stay with you. Pay a lady top dollar only if she’s earned it in devoted, committed work. Some people hike the price out of desperation. They are hurting the community. Desperation comes from the belief that there isn’t enough to go around. There’s plenty. Trust Hashem to send help your way without hurting others. Or they say: everyone is paying that price already. Not true. In summation – different levels of help – for different price levels and different needs in the community. B’hatzlacha! A Balabuste in Spring Valley

UNITY WILL TAKE US FAR In Yiddish, they say, “Tzurik geit a kuzeh.” We will probably not be able to lower the “as of now” prices for cleaning help, but we can unite and make sure the prices stay where they are now. In the z’chus of going out of your comfort zone for the community, Hashem will provide the help you need. Years ago, in Williamsburg the cleaning ladies united before Pesach to demand an inflated price. An askan drove into Chinatown and filled a van (or vans) with Chinese girls, who were happy to earn money cleaning the homes. Achdus can bring us very far. A Reader
A SUGGESTION FOR A SOLUTION With good reason, Moshe Rabbeinu was advised to appoint shoftim and shotrim, because it’s obviously a necessity for Klal Yisroel. And so, my suggestion is for our community to open a local employment agency for household help. This agency would be in charge of formulating, regulating and administrating the requirements for supplying local household help: registrations, language preparation and familiarity with American cleaning methods and products, as well as the financial aspects involved. SHEIMOS It’s a nice idea to present pertinent halachos in a concise, clear fashion on a weekly basis. There is a very important point that I would like to bring to your attention. Halachos are sheimos, regardless in which language they are written. Therefore, I think it is your responsibly to either omit them or make a prominent note in your publication as to make your readers aware. MY NEIGHBOR STOPPED BY MY HOUSE before Shemini Atzeres was about to end. There wasn’t much to do except shmooze since we couldn’t prepare for the Simchas Torah seudah. I mentioned I was thinking of walking into Monsey the next day, from our home on the outskirts. I knew her husband had done it several times and it took him about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the shul he liked to daven at. Since my children were still in strollers and the weather was supposed to be beautiful, I figured it was something worth trying. She asked me which way I was planning to go and I told her. I also mentioned to her that I had been planning to go with my husband in the early morning, before davening. However, my husband had come up with the idea of leaving after he would daven shacharis at our local shul. He would then continue on to dance hakafos in the Monsey shul. The next morning, at 10:30 a.m., I heard a knock on my door. My neighbor stopped on her way to shul to tell me that she mentioned to her husband the way we were planning to go, and he said it would add an extra mile to our walk. Baruch Hashem, we did not leave early like we had planned and that she stopped by the night before. Taking his route, we ended up making it to my parents in an hour and ten minutes. Even better than I had thought!

NOW THAT YOU HAVE (hopefully) been sticking to some sort of organized food plan for several weeks, eating right should be a bit easier. Once new patterns are established and routines are put in place, eating right becomes less of a challenge... ...Until we are thrown off of our routine. Picture this: You are careful not to skip breakfast. You have been packing healthy snacks every day for weeks. Your lunch consists of a starch, a protein, a nice big salad and a tablespoon of low-fat dressing. You have been mindful of portion control by dinner and haven’t been snacking at night. You haven’t been eating extra challah for a while now. One fine Thursday you come to class and your Rebbi makes the following announcement: “Since you boys have all been learning so well the past few weeks, I have brought you a surprise: fresh danishes and hot cocoa with marshmallows and whipped cream. Enjoy boys, you’ve earned it!” Uh oh. Now what?!

Different tools work for different people and different situations, so read through the list and make note of which ones feel like they can work for you. 1. PLAN IN ADVANCE: If you know that every Rosh Chodesh means homemade French fries, discuss this with your mother well before Rosh Chodesh, so she can plan accordingly. Same goes for eating out with friends; plan to go to a place that has decent options, and tell your friends that you will need their encouragement. Being prepared might help you avoid the challenging situation and this way, you aren’t insulting or disappointing anyone by not eating the way they might have expected you to eat.
2. PRE-EAT: If you know that you will be in a challenging situation, such as a siyum or a Bar Mitzvah etc., you might want to eat beforehand. Eat something you particularly enjoy, so that you don’t feel deprived, and when you are at the event stick to diet drinks, and perhaps some fruit. 3. EXCHANGE: Some tempting foods can be avoided by replacing them with similar foods that are better for you, so you can enjoy your favorites without feeling deprived. Examples of easy exchanges to common tempting favorites: • French Fries (common on Rosh Chodesh) can be made using oil spray and baked in the oven. • Danishes and donuts can be switched for high-fiber biscotti or low-fat, low-calorie muffins. • Ice cream can be just as delicious in low-fat, sugar-free versions. Friday nights are a bit hard because they’re so long, but I try to go visit a friend or read in the den instead of the dining room. *name changed for privacy calories for a large, satisfying portion. • Slurpees and sodas and slush all can be found in dietetic versions that cut the calories. • Beef hot dogs can be switched to chicken hot dogs, and many people find that they actually prefer the taste of the chicken hot dogs once they get used to it. • Fried schnitzel can be replaced with breaded and baked homemade nuggets, made with cooking spray. 4. DELAY GRATIFICATION: Sometimes you simply cannot know in advance what challenges will come your way. In these situations, it is often helpful to delay the temptation until later. If your Rebbi gives out a surprise treat, or if your friend shares a new snack that feels particularly tempting, save it and tell yourself you will have it soon/ later/when you get home. Then, once you are home, you may find that you are satisfied with something similar but lower in calories, or you may want to have just a few bites of the tempting treat. By telling
yourself you will have it later, you may be able to make a clear decision about whether or not you really want it. 5. TASTE A BIT: If delaying is impractical or feels too difficult (think ice cream party or Thursday night mishmar cholent), you may want to allow yourself a small taste. In fact, sometimes it is better to taste a small portion of whatever it is that is tempting, rather than fighting the temptation for hours on end, which can ultimately lead to eating more than necessary. If you do decide to indulge, here is what we recommend: • Make sure you are well nourished and hydrated. Never indulge on an empty stomach; the extras are for enjoying the taste, not to fill up. • Have a seat! Eating while standing is never as satisfying as eating while focused and seated. • Use a plate and a fork; this makes it official. Taking bits and nibbles doesn’t allow for the same satisfaction as having a plated portion, but rather allows us to be in denial about how much we are truly eating. • Don’t feel obligated to finish what you started. If you find that what you are eating isn’t as delicious or exciting as you expected, or find yourself satisfied with less than you thought you needed, feel free
to get rid of the rest. Throwing out unhealthy food is definitely not baal tashchis, because taking care of your body is actually a mitzvah, and these foods do more harm than good! By employing some of the tips above, you can stay on track even when tempting situations arise. Treat each difficult situation as its own challenge, and you will see that after a while you will get into the habit of making good decisions even in tempting situations. THIS WEEK’S PARSHA BEGINS, “Vayeitzei Yaakov… – And Yaakov left Beer Sheva and went to Charan.” (Bereishis 27:10) Yaakov’s father had commanded him to leave home and travel to the house of his maternal grandfather Besuel, and take a wife from among Lavan’s daughters. Upon describing Yaakov Avinu’s departure, the Torah says, “Vayishma Yaakov el aviv v’el imo vayeilech… – And Yaakov listened to his father and his mother, and he went…” (Bereishis 27:7) This was clearly a matter of kibbud av v’eim. It appears that Yaakov immediately obeyed his father’s command and traveled directly to Charan to take a wife – but that is not what happened. Rashi states that Yaakov first hid for fourteen years in the house of Ever and only then proceeded to Charan. Yaakov Avinu spent thirty-six years away from his
many years, Chazal say that he was punished – because of the twenty years he spent in Lavan’s house and the two years he spent traveling, Yaakov was later faced with the challenge of losing his own son Yosef for twenty-two years. Rashi states that Yaakov was not punished for the fourteen years he spent learning in the Yeshiva of Shem and Ever rather than proceeding directly to Lavan’s house to take a wife, as his father had commanded him. Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky, zt”l, in his sefer “Emes L’Yaakov,” asks why was Yaakov’s fourteen-year delay in taking a wife was not considered a failure in honoring his parents. He then offers a beautiful answer to this question. Yaakov Avinu had grown up imbibing the pure Torah of Avraham Avinu and Yitzchak Avinu. This Torah was a pure Torah as could be taught in his cir-

Yaakov departed from this pure environment in order to travel to a place of corruption and evil, and learning in the Yeshiva of Shem and Ever was what Yaakov felt he needed in order to remain a tzaddik in Lavan’s house. Shem had lived among the generation of the mabul, and Ever had lived through the time of the dor haflaga. Their yeshiva focused on facing the challenge of living a Torah-true life even when surrounded by negative influences – Toras Hagalus. Rashi, on Bereishis 37:3, cites Onkeles that the special favor Yaakov showed his son Yosef HaTzaddik was to teach him all the Torah he had learned in the yeshiva of Shem and Ever. This special Toras Hagalus may very well be what helped Yosef remain a tzaddik in Mitzrayim. We see that learning the Toras Hagalus taught in the yeshiva of Shem and Ever was an important aspect of Yaakov’s preparation to travel to Charan, but how does this factor into the mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim? Rav Kamenetsky answers that when Yaakov’s parents commanded him to go to Lavan’s house and take a wife, it was understood that this command implic-

Stopping to learn in the yeshiva of Shem and Ever was an integral part of fulfilling this aspect of their command. Rav Kamenetsky likens this to a man asking his son to buy him a lulav and esrog. Although it might not have been stated directly, it is clear that the father means that the son should bring him a kosher lulav and esrog. If the son feels he lacks the knowledge to choose a proper lulav and esrog, then first sitting down to learn the halachos is not an undue delay in the fulfillment of the mitzvah, but rather an integral part of the proper performance of the mitzvah. Likewise, sitting and learning how to remain a tzaddik so that he could return to his parents righteous was an integral part of fulfilling his parents’ desire; that Yaakov return unblemished by his encounter with Lavan was not considered an undue delay in the performance of their command to go take a wife. We know that there is one Torah – but we also know the Torah has seventy faces. (Bamidbar Rabbah 13:15) A person must be realistic with himself and his life circumstances, reflecting not only on where he comes from – the type of environment in which he grew up – but also where he is going. It is important to anticipate what challenges lie ahead and prepare oneself accordingly. Just as Yaakov succeeded in returning unblemished to his father, may we return our neshamos to our Father clean and pure.

The Monsey View surveyed random housewives to hear which methods and cleaning aids the typical Monsey balabuste implements to tackle the dirt in her home STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES In the past, I used a cleaner, which worked well, but had very strong chemicals and also made the floor very slippery. Then I learned about Weiman stainless steel cleaner, which does the job without the harmful chemical and smell and doesn’t damage the floor. I find that windex together with the magic sponge are very good for getting them to shine. Just a note to be careful not to remove the markings on appliances like stovetops by rubbing on it. I wash the stainless steel sinks well with soft scrub and a soft steel wool. I then rub in some baking soda and rinse it and wipe it down until it gleams. Baking soda can also be replaced with vinegar. I tried every stainless cleaner my grocery sells to clean my Electrolux fridge, and Pledge Restore and Shine worked best.
SCUFF MARKS ON MOLDINGS I use elbow grease, and Comet when needed. For high-shine moldings, I use soft scrub or wash it very gently with a magic eraser.
SHMATTES I started buying these in Costco: Kirkland ultra-plush microfiber auto towels (for auto or home use), available in the auto department. It has high absorbency, is a soft cloth, and washes well. I have a limitless stock, and it’s affordable enough that I can disposeof them here and there. I buy the ready rags. I find that the recycled ones often work best, like an old cotton nightgowns are cotton t-shirts or undershirts. They are very soft and excellent for polishing silver. I use the magic sponge a lot

in lieu of shmattes; they’re cheaper than they used to be, and a great product. Stains that are hard to remove, like grape juice from counters, come off easily. I rip up any old towels that are fraying at the edges. They work great. Cloth diapers are super for cleaning glass. I like to pick up packages of washcloths at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Costco sells large packages of them too.
BEST BROOMS Israeli silicone brooms catch dust and can be easily washed. I like the brooms with the animal prints. Israeli silicone. I like the one that is wider and has longer bristles at the sides for corners. It washes evry easily. However, I find that it doesn’t glide so smoothly on a wet or humid day. I use the regular broom, although it’s not fun when it gets wet. I like the ones with the real horsehair, but they get ruined very quickly. I usually vacuum my floors; I don’t use a broom much.
MOP I love the O-cedar bucket mop, which I picked up in Walmart. It has a pedal which you step on and the mop gets wringed and it sucks out all the water. The kids love it, and they love mopping the floor with this mop. I like the new miracle mop with the sponge. It gets wrung out easily, and does great work on my floors.

I use only a shmatte, no mops! My cleaning lady would love to use a mop, but I find that it just doesn’t do the job. Before Pesach, I buy a new cloth for my micro-fiber mop and I wash the walls with it.
DUSTPAN I use the dustpan with the long handle. I picked it up in Rockland Kosher. It folds up so I can store it easily. I take it along with me as I sweep. While anyone would enjoy it, seniors especially will appreciate the fact that no bending down is necessary. I like any dustpan with a sharp edge. I then pick up remaining dust/crumbs with a wet paper towel. It works well for lifting and absorbing dirt.
PARQUET FLOORS I use only water, as detergents are said to harm them. Basic H from Shaklee works well. A little vinegar and water. The guy who did my scraping told me to use only vinegar, or plain water, and no soap as it takes off shine. Especially detergents with wax, like Murphy, leave residue, which makes applying a coat problematic without the scraping. I use Murphy. I know that it’s not so good for the floors, but with toddlers in the house, I need the floors to be clean. I’ll worry about the shine when they grow up. Planet Pure Floor Cleaner is said to be good for the floors and a great cleaner. Stanley Magic Shine gives back a beautiful luster, making it shine like new.

CERAMIC SINKS I use Comet on a daily basis, and for when there are stubborn stains I use the Gefen scouring powder with bleach. I sprinkle a layer and sprinkle a little water over it to form a paste. I then put wet paper towels over it and let it sit for a while. It bleaches the sink, and I then wipe it all off with the magic sponge. The results are gorgeous. I use Soft Scrub with bleach, but I have ruined clothing with it. Fantastic with bleach works very well.
POTS I love the Chore Boy scrubbers; they don’t rust and are great for dishes and pots; too rough for the stove, though. I find that the blue soap pads from Gefen work the best. To remove water marks on the pots, I make a paste of lemon juice and baking soda. Kosher soap works very well for pots. Sour salt takes off the “rainbows” from inside the pots.
OVEN PARTS BURNERS In a disposable pan, I place ½ bar of kosher soap, 1 cup of lemon juice, and 2 oz. sour salt. I cook it up with the burners inside, for an hour. (Have all the
men out the house because they’re gonna be complaining about the smell!) After it is cooked, I rub it with steel wool and kosher soap until it is gleaming.
GRATES Place them in a garbage bag with ammonia, sealed well, and keep them in a well-ventilated area overnight. In the morning, take them out and the grime will come off easily when washed down.
SPIDER WEBS I use a shmatte over my broom to reach all corners. I use a cobweb duster that has a telescopic handle and I can extend it as long as I need it. It’s great, and reaches all over. It is also excellent for cleaning the bathtub. I fill the tub with water and detergent and reach all corners, from the bathtub, to the tiles until the ceiling, without needing to bend down. It cuts the washing into a fraction of the time. I picked it up at Walmart.
HARD WATER DEPOSITS I use vinegar basically all over. On granite, I wouldn’t use vinegar. I gently scrape it off with a sharp knife. I find that the detergent CLR Calcium, Lime and Rust works very well.
SILVER Miracle silver polish by Atlanta silver and antiques. Ask your Rav before using, as it doesn’t have a hechsher.
TILE FLOOR Goddard Stone and Tile Floor Clean and Shine is the best for tiled floors.

Stone Recap: Mr. Boden leads Malka’la to his office, where he interrogates her and hands her a check of a very small amount. DAZED, SHE STUMBLED DOWN his weed-framed path. It was a long way home. She’d thought that by not taking a cab, she wouldn’t have to share thirty percent with the driver. Now she could keep all of it, all thirty-six dollars. She wasn’t feeling indignation. Not yet. She was too small for that, the shame burning her up in pinpoint pains. Thirty-six dollars. He had elaborated on how much he values money, how he would never shell out an extra penny, how people are not careful enough, they throw around money, they throw it away. Young people with fancy luxuries, and she had agreed with him. Because she agreed with frugality, with carefulness, with using resources wisely. Like a fool she agreed with him, not realizing he was possibly talking about her. She stumbled and caught herself. His yard had a path, blocks of cracked pavement, grass like unwanted hair sprouting from between the upended cement. He couldn’t even care for his yard and make sure that people walking toward and away from him wouldn’t stumble. Now she was feeling it, the rage. He was hoarding money like

grain in a drought year, not even smoothing out the path to his door. He was holding on, tightly managing a ship full of earnest, working women who labored to give him his wealth. He was doing all this, and the money never went further, didn’t circulate. He couldn’t even give her more than thirty-six dollars. The indignation. She, a woman of Yerushalayim, had walked through the galus spheres, come all the way here, knocked on his door with an opportunity to help the pure children she was raising in her home back in Eretz Yisrael. Those children never breathed air that wasn’t the pure Yerushalayim breath of Hashem, and they never, ever sullied their bodies with luxury, had not partaken in the gifts of This World even once. She had come to him and risked everything to follow him down the dark road to his basement money machine. She had laid it all out on the table in front of him. She spoke of her deepest desires, that of giving her children life. It was such a woman’s thing, such a mother’s call, entwined with her identity like a soul in a body, and she had bared it all to him, expressed the frustration
of never being able to give the way she wanted to give, and that she was willing to accept help. His help. But he had not heard her. He couldn’t, stuck as he was in a miser’s grip. Enrobed in warm, pulsating rage now, she ran back up his broken pathway, and rang the bell three times. It took him a while — it always did, it seemed, until he shuffled to the door. She rang again. She heard him, the way the house danced a slow shuffle under his footsteps. He opened the door. She had been wholly unprepared for this trip; she clearly saw that now. But today was different. And Hashem had helped her. He gave her Gella, and her generosity and compassion.
And He gave her a fighting spirit. Today she had a coat, and boots and even a warm wool shawl, which she was moving progressively lower down her chin because the weather wasn’t cruel. This house here, the red one trimmed in perfectly chopped green shrubs, it looked like they might give her a dollar. She stood there, under a white metal street sign with English words, consulting her map, regarding the house. She could go home. Back to Gella, the comfort, the ease of passivity. But then what would she tell her children? Other Israeli meshulachim came, made money after breaking their own spirit, and left. She had nothing. Almost three hundred dollars now, not even enough to cover the expense of her ticket. There had to be a way. But was knocking on doors the way? Wasn’t there another way? “Bashefer, I am entirely ready for You to take away my poverty. I made mistakes. I trusted people I should never have. I rushed into America without adequately preparing. I’ve relied on the goodness of others, instead of Your generosity, forgetting how limited people are, in their resources and in their heart. SEMI BLENDED PEA SOUP This soup takes minutes to prepare and is an extremely hearty and welcomed addition to any home-cooked meal.
INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons oil 1 onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, diced 3 carrots, peeled and sliced 3 cups frozen green peas Salt and pepper 8 cups water
DIRECTIONS: 1. Saute onion and garlic in oil. Add carrots and saute until softened. Add green peas and spices. Cook a few more minutes. 2. Add water and bring to a boil. Lower heat and cook semi-covered for 1 hour. 3. Using an immersion blender, pulse soup 2 or 3 times, until semi-blended.

CHICKEN AND BROCCOLI SOUP This is a very interesting soup idea. I got it from a neighbor and have since tried it and adopted it as a regular. She uses the bag of chicken bones and vegetables that was cooked in her chicken soup. Instead of discarding the net bag, she empties the soup pot, using that net bag as a new base for this fantastic soup.
INGREDIENTS: 1 net bag with cooked chicken bones and vegetables from the chicken soup 2 lb. bag frozen broccoli florets 2 tablespoons oil 2 onions, diced Salt Chicken tender, optional
DIRECTIONS: 1. Saute the diced onion in the oil until wilted. Add the broccoli florets and the net bag filled with bones and vegetables. Fill the pot up with water and spice with salt, like you would a chicken soup. 2. Cook for 1 hour until the broccoli florets are extremely tender. Remove net bag and blend soup. 3. If you want to turn it into a heartier soup, you can float a few chicken tenders in the soup and cook for an additional 30 minutes.

SQUASH AND CAULIFLOWER SOUP A fantastic soup, for those who like chunky soups and not blended ones. INGREDIENTS: 1 onion, diced 2 tablespoons oil 1 green squash, unpeeled and cut into ½ circles 1 yellow squash, unpeeled and cut into ½ circles 1 lb. bag cauliflower florets Salt
For those who don’t use squash peels, this soup can be made with peeled squash.
DIRECTIONS: 1. Sauté onion in oil until wilted. Add squash and sauté for about 20 minutes until squash is tender. 2. Add cauliflower and salt. Fill pot up to barely cover the vegetables with water. Cook an additional 30 minutes. 3. You can either serve as is, or pulse 2 or 3 times with the immersion blender.

Car Safety Tips for Deer Season (Ramapo Daily Voice) WITH DEER BEING EXTREMELY active during the late fall and early winter months, Ramapo residents are being advised to be on the lookout for deer on the roadways, particularly during the nighttime hours. Car accidents that involve deer are most likely to happen from October through early January, with most taking place at dawn or from dusk through midnight, according to the
National Highway Safety Administration. Increased building in the area, which destroys open areas that are home to deer, has been identified as one of the reasons for a higher incidence of deer-related collisions in recent years. The NHTSA warns drivers who see a deer in the roadway to avoid veering into oncoming traffic because headon collisions can have far greater
consequences than actually hitting the deer. Drivers are also warned to avoid swerving onto the shoulder of the road if they see a deer in their lane of travel. Approximately 1.5 million deer accidents are reported each year, resulting in more than $1 billion in vehicle damage and causing approximately 10,000 injuries.
Hudson Valley Drivers Hit Hard by Statewide Move Over Enforcement (Governor Cuomo’s Office) MORE THAN 40 PERCENT OF THE tickets written by state troopers on the New York State Thruway during a special enforcement period of the state’s Move Over law were issued to drivers in the Hudson Valley area. During the first five-day program, which ran from November 14th to November 18th, 230 tickets were issued, which is four times more than nor-
mal. Ninety-six of those tickets were written to motorists in the Hudson Valley. The law is aimed at protecting law enforcement personnel and emergency services workers stopped on the shoulder of the roadway. Thruway staff, police officers and others spoke with motorists at the Thruway’s service areas during the campaign and
handed out more than 10,000 flyers, with reminder messages flashing on message boards all across the 570 mile superhighway. More than 77,000 tickets have been written to motorists who violated the state’s Move Over law since it was enacted in 2011.
New Tappan Zee Bridge One Step Closer to Completion (The Journal News) TWO STRETCHES OF ROAD DECK have been completed on the Tappan Zee Bridge, bringing the dream of the multi-billion dollar bridge even closer to reality. The two finished portions of the roadway are both located on the Rockland County-bound span of the bridge. A third and final portion located at the center of the span has yet

to be completed, and all three sections will be overlaid with a one-inch concrete polymer before the bridge opens to traffic in either the spring or summer of 2017. All Tappan Zee traffic will be shifted to the new westward bound span once it opens, allowing the New York State Thruway Authority to demolish the existing bridge. Once that
happens, crews will finally be able to continue work on the Westchester County-bound span, which cannot be connected to the shore on either side of the Hudson until the existing bridge has been removed. The entire bridge, which includes a second span heading east to Westchester is slated for completion in 2018.

Post-Election News President Elect Trump’s Thank You Tour Donald Trump and Mike Pence have set out on a tour around the country, this time not to campaign, but to thank his supporters. The tour is set to cover key swing states that helped him win the White House. The first stop was in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 1st. The rhetoric was very similar to his campaign speeches, with jabs at the “dishonest” media and Hillary Clinton. And after weeks of being cooped up in a barricaded Tower in Manhattan, Trump seemed to be enjoying the rally tremendously, feeding off of the crowd’s enthusiasm. The message was first and foremost “America First.” Trump took the time to thank his supporters for their vote of confidence and, he added, “Now the real work begins.” He asserted that he would suspend immigration from the Middle East and touted his success in convincing a Carrier plant in Indianapolis to remain in the U.S. rather than moving their operations to Mexico. Overall the tour is a chance for Trump to get back to what brought him the presidency, his everyman persona, and if played right, a chance to unite the country before he takes office in January.

Can you give us some insight on what’s causing the current cleaning help crisis? Most of the cleaning ladies actually don’t enjoy cleaning, and it’s definitely not their first job choice. They may do cleaning when there’s nothing else available, but would much rather take up employment in salons, boutiques, shops — work that doesn’t require so much physical labor. So they may start off with cleaning, but as soon as they have an opportunity to change to a different type of job, they will do so, often leaving the cleaning altogether, and sometimes just filling up their extra time with small

cleaning jobs. Another major part of the crisis is that there are many people who are desperate for help that’s just not available, so they resort to offering already employed cleaning help a higher rate, and successfully convince them to quit their current jobs and take up employment in their homes. They often don’t realize that there are homemakers, many of them who probably trained their cleaning ladies and/or have them in their employ for years, who will be left without the help. What are some suggestions you can share on how to make a cleaning woman want to stay with you? First and foremost, treat her well and feed her well. Another one of the key factors is to make sure that her hours are filled up. If she keeps asking you if you have a friend for more hours and you pay her no heed, she will be on her way as soon as she finds someone who will give her work to fill up her hours. (A full day should be at least eight or nine hours.) Make sure also that her “houses” are in close proximity of each other, as walking is something the cleaning ladies really do not enjoy. It wastes their time and energy and they’d rather not go out in the elements. And even when you are dividing her day close by, don’t make her go to four homes in one day. For her, this means that she gets all the heavy work in each house, and it’s a taxing day. It might encourage her to look for employment that requires less of the strenuous work. Very important is to be consistent and never to can-
cel her unless it is an emergency. Whenever there’s no way out, make sure she knows about it in advance. Don’t make her stand at the door, knocking, and then try to call you, and then go home, without having earned anything. This will definitely be something that will make her look for a new job. How do you suggest keeping the prices down? The community can change the rising costs of employing cleaning help by being a little firmer. There’s no reason you have to give in to unreasonable demands! We always try to explain to the cleaning women who insist that they work only for more than the going rate that we can’t pay more than the standard rate, but we could try to get them good jobs and fill up their hours. They try their luck, and they have the support; they stick together and egg each other on to insist on a higher rate. But if we won’t give in to that higher rate, we will be able to stay at the current prices. Sometimes you may be desperate enough to pay more. At least if you are giving in, don’t make it sound like it’s so easy for you. Don’t make it sound like you’re rolling in money. Many of these women feel that we are throwing away our money, that we have enough and more than them. It comes from our desperation to have help, but they don’t know what our motives are. All they see is that their demands are given in even before they have to beg. If we would show them that we need to think it over, discuss it, that we’re groaning a bit, that the money is a big consideration for us, they wouldn’t be so confident in insisting on more money. We have to unite as a community. If everyone would be on the same page, we can prevent the cost of cleaning help from rising yet higher. We explain to the cleaning women in a kindly tone, and you can explain to yours too, that when we go to work, nobody pays our trans-
portation. We have to get there on our own. We have to bring our own lunch, our own drinks. They get lunch, food, drinks, snacks… and we simply can’t provide transportation or pay more than we are. If it’s done in a mentchlich manner, it works. And also, don’t think that a woman who charges more does better work or is more reliable. It in no way reflects on their performance. We do find, though, that those who work for an agency have a stronger sense of reliability, as they have someone of authority to answer to when they decide not to show up. What are some common complaints that you hear from cleaning ladies? Some people are not aware that they really should be giving cleaning women food and drink — on time. Most of these cleaning ladies come to you on an empty stomach; they can’t eat too early in the morning. Keep that in mind and offer them food and drink. Not only are you being mentchlich, but you will gain as well, as everyone functions better when they’re well fed. Generally, you won’t want them to bring their own lunches and then get upset when you don’t want them to use your microwave to warm it up, so providing the food really is the best option. Another thing to keep in mind is that when a cleaning woman divides her time in two or three homes, please communicate with the others as far as her food arrangements are concerned. Other w ise, each will assume that another is pro-
viding lunch, while she may go an entire day without having a bite to eat. That’s cruel, and a tremendous chillul Hashem. Very many of the cleaning women leave their jobs in search of better ones because they don’t get enough food or drink. Erev Pesach especially is a time when the cleaning ladies’ needs get neglected. It’s hard to manage food at that time. Make sure you have non-chometz items on hand, bananas, eggs, yogurts. You don’t want them to bring their own food then! And the average cleaning lady works really hard before Pesach. Once in a while, you can serve her cereal, but before you have her wash your dishes, sit her down to her own meal like a mentch. If your cleaning lady insists only on certain foods, you have to weigh the pros and cons and decide if it’s worth it to cater to her needs. It’s up to you. But whatever you do give, give respectfully. They like their bread toasted; don’t give it to them straight out of the freezer. How often and what kinds of food should I serve my cleaning lady? Like we mentioned above, most of the Spanish cleaning ladies will not have had breakfast before they start working. When your cleaning lady comes into the house, no matter the time, always offer her a drink. Around 10:00, she should be offered breakfast. It doesn’t have to be the very elaborate or very nutritious, but it should be filling. You can prepare something like two or three slices of cake, a coffee and a banana. At 1:00 or 2:00 she should be given a normal, good lunch. And if she works later, she’ll need supper again. Throw in a little snack or treat here and there, and make sure she has what to drink. of water and some cups and show her that she can help herself when needed. Is there anything particular that shouldn’t be said to a cleaning lady? Just treat them in a mentchlich manner. Expect that to happen and you can’t be upset with her if it does. Is there any way we can somehow bring more housekeepers from

help alone? It is very much a personal decision; it depends on the personality of your help, and your level of trust, but really, no stranger should be left to stay alone in your home. Even with one who’s nice and honest, there’s halacha involved, and you can never be careful enough. They pick up and see more than you think. And if you’re going away, there’s no reason to clue in your cleaning lady for how long you’re going away, and you don’t have to report to her if you’re leaving the house for ten minutes; just disappear. Also, have someone pop in whenever possible,

different areas to help out with this crisis? It’s something we don’t have ideas for. It’s definitely always good to ask your cleaning ladies if they have any cousins or friends, or ask taxi drivers with which you ride if they know anyone. But we found that usually when we managed to procure someone in such a roundabout manner, they weren’t committed, and did not necessarily show up. What is the right way of training cleaning help, setting one’s standards in place without being demeaning or overpowering? Nobody likes it when someone is on top of them like crazy. The key is to be very friendly and do everything with a big smile, in a pleasant manner. The first time a woman comes, bring her in, greet her nicely and then show her around. Show her where you keep your shmattes, your cleaning stuff and anything she might need over the course of the day. Then tell her that you will show her where you want her to clean. Go into the room and show her around. Be very specific with every detail, and what detergent should be used for each spot. Ask her if she understood the instructions, and show her where you will be if she has any questions. You can pop in to check up on her, but don’t make it obvious; pretend you’re taking something from the closet. When she’s done, repeat the process in the next room and all subsequent jobs you’d like her to tackle. Continue the training for the next 2-3 times, until she is comfortable with her tasks. It’s exhausting, but it’s a worthwhile investment. She’ll know what’s expected of her and you’ll relax when she’ll be there. If you see that she did something wrong, or not well, don’t criticize her harshly or make her redo it on the spot. It’s demeaning. Instead, smile and say, “Today it’s good, but next time, I’ll show you how to do it differently.” (“Hoy buena, otre dia dif-

ferente.”) Do you feel it’s okay to relax and eat while the cleaning woman is working? You don’t have to stand and work alongside her; you can continue your regular activities, but it’s not very mentchlich to be openly relaxing on the couch or play a family game with ice cream and popcorn while she’s right there, working herself to the bone. Don’t make her feel like a slave. You can definitely sit down and eat and serve your family while she’s working. (Make sure that she gets her meal first, though!) Obviously, she’s getting paid for the work, but there’s still a fine line that shouldn’t be crossed. And when you do need to relax, you could explain to her that you’re not feeling well. Is it okay to demand that my cleaning lady doesn’t use her phone while she’s here? It definitely may, and should, be said, but it must be done very, very sweetly. Explain to her that you pay her and you want her to focus on her work. But don’t be a policeman. Tell her she can make emergency calls, and let’s say if her baby is at the sitter, give her certain times when she can call to check up, like while she eats. And if she wants to hear music while working, let her use her headphones, but you have every right to make sure she’s not getting sidetracked from her work. Make the atmosphere pleasant for these housekeepers. You can turn on music for them, and make the tempo fast. It makes anyone work faster. Do you have any advice to help with communication, so my cleaning help better comprehends what I tell them? Speak very slowly, use the least words possible, and gesture to make
your point. They slowly do pick up the language, English, as well as some Yiddish. Be careful how you speak in front of them, because even if they’re not understanding the words, they pick up on the vibes. How can I make my cleaning help get dressed more modestly? It is very important that these cleaning women should appear in our homes decently dressed. It is important to insist on tznius. Explain to your cleaning lady that these basic guidelines must be met: The sleeves must reach past the elbow, the chest must be covered until the neck, the t-shirt or sweater must be long enough to cover until the middle of the legs, and clothing should not be tight fitted. You can prepare clothing for them, the sleeves on a shirt that you are no longer using can be shortened and it makes a perfect coverup. Nighties that have ¾ sleeve and come down until just above the knee are soft, comfortable and do the job. But whatever you give them must be spotless and fresh. Give it to them folded, or let them see how you’re taking it off the hanger. They rightfully won’t want to wear anything that is not fresh or clean. And understandably, if your cleani n g woman c o m e s decently dressed, leave good enough alone. And here too, the key factor is to explain everything kindly and pleasantly. If she comes with a poorly covered chest, show her a safety pin and ask her
sweetly if she’d make the neck a little tighter please. Explain that your husband is there, your boys are there, and you would really appreciate if she’d be “modesta.” But don’t forget that they’re not used to layering up in the summer. Offer to lower the temperature on your AC and show her that you want to make her comfortable. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? Firstly, from a cleaning agency point of view (whose heads we get to speak to frequently): Don’t forget that the agencies are trying their best. Some women let out their anger and frustration on the heads of agencies, who are only trying to help for a minimal pay. People feel that since they pay them, they now own them, and criticize, complain and accuse when a cleaning lady doesn’t show up or doesn’t work well. The agencies are trying their best, and it’s very difficult. Please treat them well. Another thing to point out: A cleaning lady is human. Things can break, and never reprimand her for it. No one breaks something on purpose. If someth ing is too delicate or expensive, please clean it yourself. In some areas there are funds for cleaning help before Pesach. It is a beautiful thing, where people contribute to the cause and anyone in need of cleaning help can call for help in funding it or borrow money and return it at a later time. In some programs there’s a donor who matches every dollar raised. That’s a beautiful thing, allowing Yiddishe families to get the help that they can use.

oenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), is a fat-soluble antioxidant that can be both synthesized by the body and consumed in foods, primarily fish, organ meats like liver and kidney, and the germ layer of whole grains. Could CoQ10 be a modern-day fountain of youth? Some scientists believe that CoQ10, along with Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L Carnitine, may help us age better and perhaps even live longer. studies suggest that early supplementation may reduce the risk of having another heart attack. A 2011 review in the journal Atherosclerosis found that CoQ10 significantly improves the health and function of our arteries, which may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. And finally, a 2007 meta-analysis of 12 studies published in the Journal of Human Hypertension found that CoQ10 lowers systolic blood pressure by up to 17 mm/Hg and diastolic blood pressure by up to 10 mm/Hg. Your body uses the same metabolic machinery to make CoQ10 as it does to make cholesterol, and so statin drugs, taken to lower cholesterol, also lower CoQ10. CoQ10 is beneficial for the prevention of migraines at doses of 100 mg taken three times per day. In fact, it was given a “strong recommendation” for migraine prophylaxis from the Canadian Headache Society. Some research indicates that migraines occur, in part, due to mitochondrial dysfunction (explained above).

There is evidence that low levels of CoQ10 may increase the risk for periodontal disease. When taken orally or applied topically, it reduces gingival (gum) bleeding and plaque. People found it to be very effective in cases of periodontitis, when used in conjunction with good dental care. One study found that 100 mg per day increased salivation in patients with dry mouth. There are now several toothpastes and oral care products that contain CoQ10. Lastly, there is some research suggesting that CoQ10 may help improve sperm quality in men with infertility. Those who have heart failure, high blood pressure, or migraines, or who are taking statins, tricyclic antidepressants, or betablockers (all of which can lower CoQ10 levels) should consider supplementation. Generally 100 to 300 mg per day is adequate for most conditions. One of the key limitations with CoQ10 (Ubiquinone) has been poor bioavailability. It not only has to be absorbed but also has to get inside the cell to do its job. That's why a lot of people are turning to Ubiquinol, which evidence shows is much more bioavailable than Ubiquinone. For optimal absorption, take with a fatty meal and take in divided doses. That means it is better to take 150 mg with breakfast and with dinner than 300 mg at once.

THE FAMED, AND frum, Washington attorney, Nate Lewin, tells of the following incident from when he worked as a law clerk for Thurgood Marshall, the celebrated United States Supreme Court Justice: “I finally had to tell him that — not only could I not work late on Fridays and on Saturdays because of my keeping of Shabbos, I needed to take off many days from work due to the upcoming fall season of Yomim Tovim. “Justice Marshall replied to me, ‘Don’t worry, I know all about the rules of Shabbos, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkos. You see, I was a Shabbos goy when I lived years ago in the Jewish section of Baltimore.’” Perhaps the legal mind of Mr. Marshall was able to unravel these complicated halachos — but for most of us a quick review is in order. In this article we will focus on one issue: cleaning help on Shabbos. It is imperative that the reader ultimately takes these shailos to their own personal Rav; what is contained in this space is simply for the reader’s edification. The reader should keep in mind that in most cases one may not even benefit from a melacha performed by a goy for them on Shabbos, even if not requested. For this reason, these halachos need constant review.

-IThe first hurdle we need to circumvent, perhaps surprisingly, is not even Amira L’Akum, and applies even if no melacha is being requested. The Mishnah teaches us that irrespective of Amira L’Akum there is a separate issur of hiring a non-Jewish worker on the actual day of Shabbos. This is true even if the work he is being hired for will not even take place on Shabbos, and even if the work entails no melacha. Scenario: After hosting a Friday night sheva brachos your neighbor offers you her maid for a few hours. Based on the above, it would be forbidden to arrange for her on Shabbos to come to you on Shabbos. However, there are two ways around this concern. A) You may still go over to this maid and request that she come help you clean up, or wash dishes, etc. So long as you do not express the concept or term of “work,” and, of course, no talk of payment is made (although it is understood). B) If the matter that will cause your need for cleaning help is a mitzvah (e.g. a siyum, bris, etc.) then one can arrange on Shabbos for the cleaning help to come work (but still with no money/payment discussed). ----------------------The remaining issues relate directly to melacha as well as to what a cleaning lady may and may not do in a Jewish home on Shabbos:
the days — if she chooses to stay and work on Shabbos then certain melachos may be allowed under the following conditions: A) They are not noisy. B) The work is performed in private (her room, or in a place not generally entered. C) She was not directed to do this today. Short of these conditions no melacha should ever be done, even in her room and for herself (vacuuming her room for herself; quiet melachos done in her room, that are obviously done just for her may be allowed). Scenario 1: One has a full-time maid who gets a couple of days off. She decides to work on Shabbos and takes clothing of yours, without being asked, that need ironing into her room to iron. This would be allowed and you need not protest. Scenario 2: The same case, but you direct her to iron the clothing. This would be forbidden. Scenario 3: The same case, but she wishes to use a vacuum cleaner or dishwasher (see below regarding dishwashers), or plant and garden outside. Because these are either noisy or call attention to the act, they would be forbidden. ----------------------Once all of the above is resolved, we now move on to the most common cases. Once we have determined that they are not being asked to do melacha, what may they be asked to do? And, what if they are asked to wash dishes and choose on their own to use hot water?

Full Time Maid: The Rama rules that hired help who gets paid a lump sum for a variety of general jobs and responsibilities is still considered a sechir yom (an hourly wage earner). This means that she may not perform any melacha-based work for you on Shabbos and Yom Tov, period. (This would be especially true of cleaning help that is not full time, where they were hired specifically for Shabbos hours) Rav Shlomo Miller and others rule that today, however, when a full-time cleaning lady may take off one or two days a week — Shabbos being one of
“First, we should point out that one may arrange during the week for a cleaning lady to come to one’s house on Shabbos. This is true even if an hourly rate for those few hours is given just for the Shabbos work, so long as no melacha is being expected, rather simple help with clean-up, dishes etc.” Any melacha that she chooses on her own to do and that is not an essential part of the labor would be allowed. For example, it is of no concern how she gets to your house — by foot or by car. For the same reason, if a maid decides that she does not wish to wash the dishes with cold water and chooses to
use hot water, this would be fine. So long as the work can be done in a permissible way and she chooses a melacha method to perform it then it is of no concern. There is one exception to the above: Some Poskim recommend that she not wash dishes near the close of Shabbos for reasons beyond the scope of this article. The reader is directed to their personal Rav for guidance. Most poskim draw the line at using an actual dishwasher, due to its noise. Many camps and caterers are lenient in this regard. A Rav should be consulted. ----------------------Finally, one may be wondering: Is there no major melacha-based incentive to having a maid, a full-time Shabbos goy?
-IVAlthough the Shulchan Aruch writes the general rule that anything that is forbidden for a Jew to do it is also forbidden to have a non-Jew do, there are exceptions. Of course, there are the general cases the come up from time to time when a goy is needed (e.g. you forgot to leave the air conditioner on). This most common allowance is called Psik Reisha. Say one forgets to undo their refrigerator light before Shabbos — Rav Moshe Feinstein and many others allow one to directly ask the maid (or any non-Jew) to open and close the refrigerator. This is because the goal is the food inside, and not the light going on and off, even though this is inevitable. Even though a Jew is forbidden to do these types of melachos, a non-Jew may be asked. The concept of Psik Reisha is complex and one should not apply it without speaking to a Rav (other than the refrigerator case, which we already indicated is okay). Real Estate Housekeeping and Home Value NAOMI STREICHER OF REALTY TEAMS always says that “you cannot sell a home that has an unpleasant smell.” How important is the cleanliness of a home in relation to the price that it will sell for? In the Monsey community, there are areas where homes are sold for their “land value”; the buyer is looking at the lot and the potential of the property. Some buyers want to knock down the home to build a condominium project or to build a new “McMansion” — something that is becoming more common in some of our local neighborhoods. But if the intent of the buyer is to live in the home or even rent it out to a tenant, the overall condition plays a role in the final price of a home. A dirty home often is not kept up so well. When obtaining a mortgage, the mortgage company will send an appraiser to determine the house value. An appraiser, in determining the value of a home is supposed to see underneath the grime and the mess, but he may grade the home condition as “poor” due to its unkemptness, which lowers the value of the home and may force the buyer to get a renovation loan because banks will not lend on a home graded poorly by an appraiser. There are some families that are naturally neat. Their homes are always spotless. Even if the home is dated and old, it is always maintained and clean. Other families are clean, but they are disorganized and the home has a lot of clutter. They may maintain the home if something breaks and they can clean up, but if you knocked on the door without them having prior knowledge, you will be acquainted with the true way that they live. Clutter, toys, furniture in disarray and general messiness, but underneath it all the home may be clean. And then there’s the dirty home. The dirty home on the cleanest day may be messier that the disorganized home in its natural state. Sometimes there are odors in the home and normal maintenance is not done, either from general neglect, lack of knowledge or money. It’s true that the reason home shoppers look at houses is to inspect the layout and condition, but here

are some reasons why the cleanliness of one’s home is important when selling and showing your home: 1. If potential buyers get distracted by too much disorder, they may walk away from the house with a sense that it has not been well maintained, even if it is actually in great condition. 2. If the house is dirty/messy it gives people the feeling that they will have a lot of work to clean it before they can move in. 3. Some people won’t be able to see past the mess/dirt. They will get a sense that the house is hard to maintain and doesn’t have enough storage — neither of which are good selling features. 4. Buyers will have visited more than one house. They will be comparing houses and prices, and you will not get the offers you want if your home compares poorly in the buyers’ minds to similar homes. 5. Buyers try to
picture their furnishings in your space. If there is too much clutter, most people are not able to see past it, and the picture in their mind will look very “crowded.” Recently, at a business convention, the presenter brought in a beautiful-looking cake. He asked the audience, “Who would like a piece?” A few hands went up. The presenter proceeded to stick his hand into the cake and grabbed a piece. He held up his sticky non-gloved hand and said, who would like the first piece? No one was interested. Selling a home is not much different. There are some families that can do it all: incorporate a well-run household, prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner, do homework with the children, and also clean the home. Most moms, as Super as they are, cannot. It is too much and with more and more women in the workforce, cleaning the home is one of the daily routines that fall to the wayside. Is there a solution? Yes, the cleaning lady! Whether it’s a cleaning lady a few hours, or a few days a week, or a chart on the refrigerator involving the members of the household, young and old, in doing household chores. Because when selling your home, a cleaner home will sell for more money!
