DOES YOUR CHILD STRUGGLE WITH STUTTERING OR ARTICULATING WORDS? SPEAK TO KIDS FIRST TODAY!
At Kids First, Sora Schachter, MA-CCC-SLP treats stuttering and articulation / phonological disorders in both children and adolescents. She incorporates the Lidcombe program, a behavioral and family-based approach, to treat preschoolers and school-aged children who stutter. To help adolescents/adults who stutter, she administers dynamic stuttering therapy, a program working to reteach the brain to use the same natural automatic speech production process as fluent speakers do. Backed by the Kids First model of monitoring each case and keeping an open dialogue among each kid’s home, school and therapist, YOUR CHILD WILL SPEAK CONFIDENTLY.

EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS הדלקת הנרות מוצאי שבת
Everest Equity Company , Inc. THE
The letter you printed last week, The Kid in the Picture, is exactly what is on everyone’s mind, word for word! For a long time I am very bothered by the pictures printed in our heimishe papers, but didn’t know how to express myself in a positive way. I didn’t know how to go about it, so I just tore out those ads. They just looked like they were put into the wrong publication. Let’s hope the message is clear and we should see positive changes. Let’s keep our children busy with looking at only Yiddishe kids in our papers. T.F

A GOOD LESSON I want to thank you for your article about cleaning help. I never realized that my cleaning lady was probably showing up on an empty stomach. I guess it is a cultural thing… Well, I started preparing her extra food and she eats it so happily! I never would have guessed… Thank you! Enlightened Homemaker
CLEANING TIPS REVISITED MY FORM OF CLEANING HELP I feel obligated to let your readers know about my amazing Erev Pesach (and all-year-round) helper, and my right hand! (I barely use cleaning ladies, for lack of them especially at this time of year). A good steam machine is a lifesaver; it cuts the heavy work into a fraction of the time with no rubbing or scrubbing, and no detergents. The steam of the machine does the work! I find that it makes the work so much easier and more exciting. Just be aware, not all companies and models work the same. I found the company Vornado/McCulloch model MC1275 to be a great choice. It’s powerful, lightweight and effective.

SILVER POLISHING TIP I just wanted to share with your readership how effective I find “Clear Power” (Melaleuca’s Windex) on silver. I rubbed in a bit on my silver with a microfiber cloth and had sparkling silver within minutes. I shared this tip with family and friends who were very happy to see what a beautiful job it does without the chemicals. R.K.
YOUR VOICE PROUD OF AM YISROEL I took a non-Jewish taxi today and the driver told me he started working there the day before, therefore he didn’t know his way around yet. He said he lives in Haverstraw but wants to work in this area because it’s a very busy place and he can earn a lot of money... He also said that “the Jews are nice people to work with,” and that they are “friendly and polite.” Keep the kiddush Hashem going! G.H.

My heart aches when I see young mothers dropping off their children at playgroup or babysitters when they are half sick. There are so many instances where children are given Motrin or Tylenol to bring their fever down, and then dropped off at the babysitter, while the mothers go to work. What happened to the care our mothers used to give us fifteen or twenty years ago? When we grew up we knew that if a child had a fever or was just simply under the weather, the child was kept home. She/he was given the love, care and rest needed until the child felt better. When a child had a fever he was kept home an extra day after the fever wore off to make sure whatever bug the child had was gone. The reason for this was twofold: to assure the child’s well-being and not to infect other children. If a mother had to go to work and there was no way to take off, she would find a relative to watch the child, take the child with her when possible or get a babysitter at home. The rationale that “other mothers also do it and infect my kids” or that they have no choice are inexcusable. Our children are our most precious possessions and not burdens to be farmed out so we can be available to do what we really want to do. They have only one chance at childhood and we ought to give them what is rightfully theirs, in a safe and loving manner. Concerned Mother and Grandmother

I WAS MAKING A BAR MITZVAH and needed a dress. I had medical issues at that time, and I couldn’t run around looking for a dress. My sister-in-law had worn a gown to her brother’s wedding, so I called her up to see if I could borrow her gown. She said she had borrowed it from her sister and that she would ask her if I can wear it. She called me back and told me that her sister was willing to rent the gown to me. I asked my mother and sister who had attended that chasunah what they thought of the gown and they said it was very nice. My husband picked up the gown and I tried it on just to make sure the height was fine. I then hung it in my closet. Right before the bar mitzvah, I took it out and tried it on. I only had to make three small alterations to it. Although she was short and petite and I was tall and slender, the dress seemed like it had been made for me!

A Yeshiva Life of Torah and Health By: Basya Kovacs, Nutrition Counselor
CHANUKAH IS IN THE AIR. Donut ads are popping up everywhere. Yeshivos are planning their mesibos, relatives are coordinating Chanukah parties and families are baking sugar cookies… Where does your healthy food plan fit into this picture? Do you undo the hard work that you have accomplished the last few weeks and dive straight into the festivities? Think about it for a few minutes. Think about how you’ll feel if you get on the scale after Chanukah, and the number reads three, four or even five pounds higher than it did before Chanukah. Even if you aren’t back at square one, you might be close to it, and it will take several weeks of careful eating to undo the Chanuka weight gain. A better option would be to do some advance planning. What are some of the not-to-be-missed Chanukah treats you are looking forward to? Is there a certain doughnut you’ve been dreaming about? Is your aunt’s cheesecake a once-a-
78 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 21, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
year treat that will leave you feeling very deprived if you don’t have any? Think your Chanukah through, day by day and party by party, and make a list of two or three must-haves. My list looks something like this: 1. Zishe’s doughnut from Evergreen 2. Mom’s latkes 3. Aunt Feigy’s cheesecake Only put foods on this list that you will feel very deprived without having. What often happens in situations like this, is that resisting these foods can backfire. The feeling of being deprived often leads to overeating later on. My recommendation is to eat everything on your list at some point throughout the eight days of Chanukah. A half a doughnut on two different nights, a thin slice of cheesecake on a third night, and a small latke on one or two evenings will not sabotage your diet. Telling yourself you will not eat any doughnuts or latkes, holding out for three or four days, and then
eating three donuts and four latkes for several nights in a row definitely will. When partaking of these Chanukah delicacies keep in mind a few things: 1. Don’t eat these special treats on an empty stomach. Make sure to first have your regular filling foods so that you are able to eat the Chanukah treats purely for the enjoyment and the taste. These aren’t foods to be filling up on. 2. Don’t have these treats in place of snacks. The snacks that we recommend between meals should have a fair amount of fiber and protein so that you are sustained until the next meal. The Chanukah treats we are discussing do not serve that purpose, and if eaten in place of proper snacks, may cause you to overeat at a later meal or at night. 3. Have your Chanukah treat while seated, and don’t forget
THE BALANCING BOCHUR: Sruli Englander* Height: 5'8 Starting weight: 180 pounds Current weight: 172.5 pounds Weight lost this week: 1 pound I was pretty nervous about Chanukah because I have a few parties coming up, but then I realized that my nutrition counselor will probably allow me to have a doughnut and a latke on Chanukah, because they don’t believe in depriving yourself... And I was right! She told me to take one full doughnut or two half-doughnuts on Chanukah and to enjoy every bite without feeling guilty, and that’s exactly what I plan to do. I love knowing that I can have the special foods that I am used to having without feeling guilty! *name changed for privacy
to use a plate. This will guarantee that your treat actually registers. When we eat without concentrating we hardly notice or enjoy the food, and we don’t acknowledge the extra calories either. Now make a second list. This list should include foods that are delicious and out of your routine, but not particularly special to Chanukah. Items that go on this list are things like fresh bagels with cream cheese, lasagna, eggplant parmesan, chocolate coins, fried schnitzel, french fries, etc. This list has all the foods that are tempting and can sabotage your diet but aren’t extra special. The point of creating this second list is so that you can plan in advance for these temptations. It isn’t always enough to tell yourself that you will “try hard” to eat well at a Chanukah party — you need to have a plan of action in place. Some ideas for an action plan: • For some bochurim, it
might be helpful to find out if something similar but healthier can be served (especially if it’s your mother or grandmother making the food!) For example, eggplant parmesan can be made with low-fat cheese and baked instead of fried. Homemade french fries and schnitzel can be baked as well. Even lasagne can be made healthier, by using whole wheat noodles and low-fat cheese, and keeping the portion size under control. • For other people, the best option (at a milchig party) is to simply eat some sliced turkey before they go, making themselves fleishig and forcing themselves to not eat. • Another option is eating your healthy food before the party and then sitting far enough from the party food to not be tempted by it. • For yet others, eating a snack along with your selected Chanukah treat right before a party might be enough to help resist the tempting but more routine party fare. The goal of making the two lists and the plan of action is to go into Chanukah with a sense of control, so that you can enjoy the special treats of the chag without undoing all progress you have made.

The Yom Tov of Chanukah has two mitzvos: 1. To light Chanukah candles.
Lighting the Menorah: • Every male or female (over the age of bar/bas mitzvah) is mechuyav with the mitzvah of Chanukah licht. • It is widely accepted that all males over bar mitzvah light the candles themselves. • Women and girls do not perform the actual lighting themselves but are yotzei through the lighting of the baal habayis. It is imperative that they should see the candles burning. It is preferable for women not to light themselves, but to have their obligation fulfilled by the baal habayis. In a situation where there are no available males to light the menorah, then women should light the menorah themselves. • It is preferable to use olive oil with cotton wicks. However, all other oils and wicks are permitted. • There are different opinions regarding where to light the menorah. Some say to light by the door or window where the lights can be seen from the outside in a public place. There are those who light inside, by the door, across from the mezuzah in the room that has the most action, for example the dining room or kitchen. • The menorah should be no lower than three tefachim from the floor (Approx. 10.5 inches or 27 cm.) and should be no higher than 20 Amos from ground level (35.5 ft or 10.8 m).
90 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 21, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
2. To say Hallel and hodaah.
• Those who light the menorah so that it can be seen from the outside should make sure that it is lower than 20 amos from the ground. • There are different opinions as to when to light the menorah. Some light at shkia, and some light after tzeis hakochavim. Some who light indoors are not makpid and light later. However one should light the candles as long as the family is up and around. Bedieved, at least two people should be awake when the menorah is lit in order to publicize the nes. • On the first night of Chanukah one says the bracha of Shehechiyanu, in addition to the other two brachos. • All of the brachos should be said before starting to light the candles. Women should not do any work for the first half hour that the candles are burning (or after candle lighting). For example, women should refrain from things like sewing, doing laundry and cleaning. However, cooking or preparing for a supper or party is permitted. • It is assur to speak between the brachos and the completion of the lighting of the candles. • One may not lift or move a menorah after it has been lit while the lights are still burning. • On Shabbos, if one lit the menorah by the open doorway and one wants to move it in order to close the door,
one should put a valuable object, like a ring or watch on the menorah tray before moving it. It is preferable that the menorah be moved after the lights are extinguished. • On Erev Shabbos one lights the Chanukah licht first and then lights the Shabbos licht. • If a woman first lights the Shabbos candles, she may not light the menorah afterwards (just as she cannot do any melacha). • On Motzei Shabbos the minhag is to first make Havdala and then light the menorah. • The candles should only be lit in one’s own domain, if one is sleeping at home. • If one is a guest at someone else’s house (e.g. one has a Chanukah party and sleeps overnight) then one must light the menorah in the room where they sleep. If one still intends to return home that night then one must light in one’s own house, making sure to light before alos hashachar, and that at least one other person is present. • If one has to travel before the time of candle lighting one may light as early as plag hamincha. If this is not possible, one should try to at least see some candles that were lit by others and just recite the second bracha of She’asoh Nissim.
• It is not permitted to light candles in a place that is not a residence: for example, an airport, office, or a simcha hall. • If one is traveling and has no other way to be yotzei, one may fulfill their obligation with their spouse’s lighting, even if they were not present, as long as it would be the correct z’man for the person who is traveling. • If one goes away for Shabbos Chanuka, one lights in the room where one sleeps. One who plans to return home on motzei Shabbos must light when one returns home, even if it’s late. However there must be another person present during lighting. (There are some who are maikel that if one already lit the candles before Shabbos in the host’s home, then one may light on Motzei Shabbos in the place they were staying for Shabbos.) • We say the full Hallel during Shacharis on every morning of Chanukah. • Al Hanisim is said during benching and Shemoneh Esrei. • It is a minhag to put enough oil or a candle that is long enough to burn for at least a half hour into the menorah after the appearance of three medium-sized stars (צאת )הכוכביםinto the menorah. • One should not be mevazah (treat with disrespect) any object that was used for the purposes of a mitzvah. Therefore one should not throw away the burnt wicks but should burn them instead. Many have the minhag to burn the wicks from the menorah with the chametz on Erev Pesach.

Keep Your Car Doors Locked, Warns Chaverim (Ramapo Police Department) BOTH CHAVERIM AND the Ramapo Police Department are once again advising residents to keep their cars locked after the arrest of an 18 year old man last Shabbos morning. Yossi Margaretten of Chaverim said that car break-ins have become a problem in the Monsey/Spring Valley area in recent weeks, with over 60 reports of valuable items, cash and checks being removed from unlocked cars at night. According to Margaretten, surveillance footage showed a group of seven individuals hitting cars at about midnight Friday night, starting in the area of Decatur Road and Nesher Court, moving westward until they got to Elyon Road, where they were spotted by a Village of Kaser safety patrol. Chaverim were called to the scene and they contacted the Ramapo Police Department at 1:30 AM, detaining one suspect until police arrived and ar-
resting a Spring Valley teen who was in possession of numerous stolen items. The Ramapo Police Department and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations are continuing to investigate the break-ins and hope to be able to identify and apprehend more of the individuals involved. In the interim, area residents are urged to remove valuables from their car and to keep their vehicles locked at all times. “It just takes a minute,” advised Margaretten. “From what we have seen they are only going into unlocked cars and we hope to be able to stop them.” Chaverim will be adding an extra three cars to their overnight patrols this week to deter further criminal activity.
State Police Alert Public to Phone Scammers Posing as Police Officers (Ramapo Daily Voice) THE NEW YORK STATE POLICE Department is warning residents to be on the alert for scammers pretending to be police officers and asking for money. Callers have identified themselves as state troopers, and said that their identities have been stolen or that they are being investigated and ask for either financial contributions or personal information. Police said that while the calls pop up on Caller ID as originating from 518-897-2000, a phone number listed to State Police in Ray Brook, New York, they are bogus and are not
coming from anyone associated with the New York State Police. The calls are not coming from the State Police, advised police. Residents are urged to be on the alert for callers who ask for money and demand immediate or cash payments, do not provide an address or phone number, refuse to divulge information about their organization or get upset or impatient when asked reasonable questions about their organization. Anyone receiving a call of this nature is asked to call State Police at 518-873-2750.
Pomona Woman Awarded Key to County for Response to Anti-Semitic Graffiti (County Executive’s Office) VANDALS WHO SAW AN OPPORtunity to spread hate found themselves outwitted by a Pomona woman who refused to allow anti-Semitic messages on her block. Residents of Carteret Drive in Pomona woke up on the morning of November 14th to find the words “No Jews” scrawled in spray paint on the roadway in front of two houses that were listed for sale. Alerted to the graffiti by her husband Dan, Ivey Mackle pulled out her own can of spray paint, obliterating the hateful words with black paint and then replacing them with hearts and flowers, hand drawn in sidewalk chalk.

County Executive Ed Day presented Mrs. Mackle with an award in honor of her actions, gifting her with a ceremonial key to Rockland County on December 13th at the JCC Rockland in West Nyack. “All it takes is one person to make a difference,” said Day. “What Ivey told people who hate is ‘Not here. Not in my neighborhood.’” Day praised Mrs. Mackle, the mother of fourteen-month-old twins, for bringing unity to Rockland County. The Ramapo Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.

Hello Gitty mind if I pop in to you? I missed the bus to Monsey and my next bus is 2-1/2 hours… Sure, Chavi come right over! My supper’s all done - I'll be glad to have some company. Doorbell rings Chavi walks in. After sitting down schmoozing for a few minutes over coffee and cake Chavi asks Gitty! Something feels different in the house? Did you just paint or something? I don't know, I can't put my finger on it but something is not the usual here. Gitty chuckles, I know what it is. You haven't been here for a long
time... About 3 months ago, my vacuum cleaner broke. I was looking for a good vacuum cleaner when one of my friends suggested I consider this new Sirena machine. To make a long story short I bought it. Come on! You want to tell me this is what I'm feeling? Yes! I saw the ad but I really didn't pay attention to it… can you explain why you’re so sure that's making the difference in your house? It’s very simple really - the quality of the air in the house is much different. That’s aside from the fact that the whole house is that much
Special! Free gift with your purchase! cleaner. Look it's now Wednesday afternoon how does the house look? My cleaning lady wasn't here since Sunday afternoon. Pretty clean after a whole week, no? You mean to tell me that you truly believe in it?! That’s is so not your type! Well then you should listen to this. I also didn't believe all those stories until after I actually used it for a short time. I bought it because it’s a high quality vacuum, it's got a good strong suction compared to others. And then, after we’d had the vacuum for about 2 weeks my neighbor asks me what I’m doing with Shloime now. You know my Shloime, since he’s small he always had this runny nose and cold. We’ve tried keeping him off milk, and then eggs for a while it didn't help. We went to many doctors and we just got used to tissues being his constant companion. Then, as I was saying, two weeks after we bought the vacuum cleaner this neighbor confronted me about the drastic change she noticed. He really is a different person. I don't have to tell you what it means for an 11 year old boy to always have to keep tissues in his pockets. He is no longer the kid with the runny nose, all of a sudden, he became a mentch! His self-esteem grew, even his learning has improved. I’m telling you, it’s unbelievable how these little “things” define a person especially a kid who is sensitive… Gitty! This is really something! I’d love to find out more information. This visit was worth missing the bus for, though I’d better start heading for the door if I don’t want to miss the next one… I guess I’ll be looking up that ad later today or tomorrow and call them. Thanks again for hosting me goodbye,

Post-Election News Trump Officially Wins the Electoral College Vote On Monday, December 19, the electors representing the 50 states of our union plus Washington, D.C. officially cast their votes for the next president. Two electors from Texas who were pledged to Trump voted differently, one for Ron Paul and one for John Kasich. Hillary lost five pledged electors, one in Hawaii, who voted for Bernie Sanders, and four in Washington State, three of whom voted for Colin Powell, who is notably a Republican, and one for Faith Spotted Eagle, a Native American tribeswoman. At final count Trump won the election 304 to 227. And despite this having been predicted on election night, it was still a relief to Trump after massive amount of pressure was put on Republican electors throughout the country to change their votes. In
some instances, it went as far as death threats. But when it came down to it, the overwhelming majority of electors voted according to the will of the people, and now Donald Trump is officially the president-elect of the United States.
Russian Hackers: Did They Influence the U.S. Election? Four years ago, during the elections of 2012, Republican candidate Mitt Romney raised the issue of Russia being a foe to the United States. President Obama’s response was that “the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years…” This, by and large, continued to be the Obama policy over the remainder of the Obama Administration, with Russia’s aggression in the Ukraine as well as its alliances with U.S. enemies going largely ignored, mainly because of the help Russia provided the Obama Administration in reaching what they considered a milestone COMMUNITY CLASSES nuclear agreeCAMP FUNDS ment with Iran. FAMILY REIMBURSED RESPITE Come Election TRANSPORTATION 2016 and all of SELF -HIRED STAFF a sudden, the HOUSING SUBSIDY tone changed.
DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE MEDICAID WAIVER?
After Donald Trump praised Putin’s style of leadership in comparison to Obama, Democrats started noticing the misdeeds he had perpetuated over the years. And after Trump won the election, the Democrats and media started rumbling about “fake news” and such originating from Russia that unduly influenced the election. Hillary Clinton herself has cited Russia’s involvement in hacking her and the DNC’s emails and then leaking them to the U.S. public as the reason she lost the election. (That she doesn’t realize that the content of those emails scaring people off, is far more likely to have influenced the election.) But does the fact that the Democrats are suddenly and hypocritically outraged by these hacks make it any less serious? It shouldn’t. Which is why Team Trump’s current claims — that the hacking wasn’t the Russians’ doing, but someone inside the U.S., or that leaking those emails had no effect on the election — is coming across exactly how the Democrats are trying to portray it: Trump and Russia worked hand in hand to win this election. Team Trump and Republican lawmakers have refused to get behind the investigations into the Russian hacks proposed by the Democrats, but they absolutely should, if for no other reason than to silence those who are trying to instill doubt about whether Donald Trump did, in fact, win this election fair and square.

that all of our clients walk out happy with a perfectly fitted gown. Another beautiful touch we added in our boutique is the cozy fitting area. We have comfortable velvet couches where you and your friends and family can sit and discuss for as long as you need. SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT SHOPPING EXPERIENCE! NOW, LET’S TALK ABOUT YOU! YOU’RE FROM PARIS, FRANCE, DID GROWING UP THERE INFLUENCE YOUR LOVE FOR FASHION? Definitely! Growing up in Paris meant that I was surrounded with gorgeous fashion from a very young age! From the Galleries Lafayette to designers in the Sentier, I absorbed all the French beauty that I could. Looking back at my school notebooks, I found many drawings of evening gowns in between the notes. I have always had a passion for eveningwear. DID YOU GET ANY TRAINING IN FASHION OR DID YOU JUST FOLLOW YOUR CALLING? Well, both! I got my Bachelors in marketing and an Art minor from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. There, I learned how to be more precise in my designs, track trends, pick colors, etc… My final project was actually a collection of evening gowns all inspired by NYC where I lived at the time. The quest to pursue my passion didn’t stop there and after graduation I opened my own custom-made gowns label called La Pelcha. I would create designs for customers according to their style and personality. In fashion, you learn mostly by experience, and I felt I needed to learn more, so I got a job as an assistant designer
YOU MENTIONED YOUR OWN BRAND IS CALLED “LA PELCHA”, CAN YOU SHARE ITS MEANING WITH US AGAIN? For me “La Pelcha” reminds me of what my grandmother says to us when we’re wearing something beautiful. “You look stunning, but it’s not the dress, it’s la percha”. “Percha” means a hanger in Spanish. She is telling us that rather than the dress making us beautiful; we are the ones (the hanger) making the dress beautiful instead. As a child, I heard “La Pelcha”, and for me, this is the true definition of beauty. As a great designer once said: “What is important in the dress is the woman who is wearing it”. This is exactly what we aim to do with our dresses, make each and every woman shine in a dress custom made to their standard of beauty. WE LOVE IT! WHAT EXCITING THINGS ARE YOU PLANNING FOR THIS COMING YEAR? Oh, so much is in store! First of all, we have new designers coming in for Spring ‘17 that we are so excited for! We are also thinking of going online to be able to serve the Tznius community further than the tri-state area. Definitely stay tuned for a lot of beauty! HOW CAN WE STAY OR GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU? You can find us on Instagram @powder_couture or at www.powderbylapelcha.com. You can also call us at (845) 356-3731 or visit our store front at 178 Route 59-Suite4. Monsey, NY 10952from Sunday to Thursday 10:30-5:00PM. We can also offer evening appointments if necessary. THAT SOUNDS AMAZING; WE’RE DEFINITELY COMING TO YOU FOR OUR NEXT SIMCHA! We can’t wait and are looking forward to serving you <3

CHAPTER 20

Stone Recap: Malka’la has five more days in America. Gella calls a friend to help raise funds. HOW WOULD THE HOUSE FEEL without Malka’la? How would it recover? How would she recover? Gella knew that if Malka’la returned to Yerushalayim emptyhanded, the silence (Accusation? Guilt?) Malka’la left in her wake would rock Gella’s world, the world in which she enjoyed her comfort, her little luxuries, her life. Pessy was in on the party. They were now onto something. Situations can change in five days. They can. A moment in Hashem’s time was all it took for a situation to break and rebirth.
page Tzedakah Party. Then she turned to a new page and wrote the names of people who’d want to support her and who could, on the spur of the moment, help pull this thing together: Pessy, Liba, Rivkie. After licking the top of her pen, she also added Malka Baila. Malka Baila had both money and talent, not to mention the right connections, but she was harder to motivate on such short notice. She probably had appointments booked back to back, three months in advance, all scheduled neatly in her leather planner. Still, worth a shot. She’d
Liba should probably be dropped from the committee, Gella thought. She was adding dead weight to it. Gella took the stairs quickly and entered her walk-in closet. She took down that cashmere sweater she liked to keep folded on the top shelf. She wrapped herself in it and put on her comfortable but elegant brown shoes. She opened up a new blackand-white marble notebook and cracked it at the binding. In her neatest scrawl, which was her biggest lettering, she entitled the first

need to call them all, of course, but first, a basic idea. Or first call them; it was already so late. No. Plan first. It would be in Pessy’s house. Food. They’d need to cook a meal. Cut up fruit entrée. Main dish. It would have to be fish, to keep it milchig. She could cook. Her neighbors could cook; they could pull this off. Already, she was feeling the back of her neck pull to-
gether. Color cake would be a big draw. It was so new, the taste so mysterious and trending. And how about melt-in-the-mouth Russian tea balls. Pralines… chocolate pralines. Jello pies. And if they wanted to make it really, really serious, they could do a real Viennese table. Maybe also kugel and potato salad. Oh, the options. They’d have to make it serious. You can’t expect people to pay a hundred without it. Raffles. They’d need raffles. Who would speak? She was calling Malka Baila. First things first. That evening, while Malka’la was knocking on a white repainted door with round circles grooved into the wood, hearing the echo reverberating throughout the front hall, and davening to the Eibishter while she waited — “Ribbono shel Olam, bring me closer to my goal” — five ladies in elegant coats filed into Gella’s dining room. At least my ticket, but I know and trust You can give me more, Malka’la thought, but quickly changed her thoughts to faith: “I’m giving this over to You. Please help me accept Your will.” While Malka’la retreated to the road and looked across the street,

deciding if it was worth it for her to cross or continue on, finally settling on walking up the entire street on one side and walking back on the other, the women finished their small talk. Gella cleared her throat. “I have a guest. It is the achrayus of the entire community to come together and help. We are the people who know how to involve the rest of this wonderful community. It is brought down that whoever brings a meritorious opportunity to the klal—” she trailed off, as she wasn’t sure what the rest was. Her friends were nodding. “It’s a terrible situation,” Gella said, outlining some impressions. “We can’t sit by. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.” “So, how do we arrange a party in seventy-two hours?” Liba asked plainly. “The details will all fall into place. By Sunday night, the party is cleaned up. Malka’la flies home. Her children are waiting for her. Over a month now they are waiting. Do you know that her mother called her, already expecting her to send money to feed the children. I didn’t know what to say! I have no idea what they are doing now. I never knew a situa-
Liba should probably be dropped from the committee, Gella thought. She was adding dead weight to it. “That would be nice but we must also do something for the women,” Pessy said, “if only to support her.” “Twenty dollars max,” Liba said. “Plus raffles. This is going to be one party. Listen, when have we last challenged ourselves like this. Purim and Pesach won’t be for another eight weeks.” “The suggested donation will be a hundred,” Malka Baila broke in smoothly to bring order to the table. “If someone can’t, they’ll bring less.”
Gella felt a great nervousness to approach Malka’la, to essentially force her; there was no other choice. tion could be so terrible. It’s so easy for us to help.” “Over a month? You’ve had her over a month? You are such a tzadekes,” Liba exclaimed. Pessy gave her a measured look. If this almanah was anyone Gella could consider for her son, then it wasn’t good for her to consider that she had done a mitzvah. Rather, that it had been a privilege. She was giving unto others but was really helping herself. “She’s very nice,” Gella was saying. “So how do we arrange it?” “First of all, we can’t charge a hundred dollars,” Liba said. “That’s ridiculous. No woman will come. It happens to be, my sons can probably pull off a tea party. Maybe we can try that.”

These women were in. These women were doing it, Gella noted to herself. She found herself deeply breathing, sighing on the exhale. She’d never realized how much weight she was carrying. “And I’ll donate a set of linen. That’ll be my contribution. We’ll raffle it off.” A giddiness rose up in Gella. They divided tasks. Each person got a hundred names to call and invite. The food was also allocated, each person to find a volunteer to cook. Malka Baila was great at party planning, Liba would get props and tables and tablecloths, Pessy was the hostess and chair lady. “And Malka’la will be the speaker,” Pessy broke in, her authority only slightly tampered by the great
excitement discernible in her voice. Gella frowned. It would… ruin things. She heard Malka’la in her guestroom. She had arrived back home. Gella warily wondered how much she had collected tonight, before dismissing the worry. It didn’t matter. She was helping here. These women would make it happen for Malka’la. The woman hadn’t been able to garner enough sympathy to make any money until now, why should she be the one speaking? And Malka’la wouldn’t want to stand up and speak. And Malka’la… “No. That won’t work,” Gella said. “Why not?” “I can’t say it right now.” “Then that’s it. We can’t bring a speaker on such short notice. But if people are giving, they deserve to hear from Malka’la,” Pessy said convincingly. Oh, what was the use? Gella felt a great nervousness. To approach Malka’la. To essentially force her; there was no other choice. The entire committee was for this idea. And also, what would it look like? What impression would the poor woman make? She had pulled together such a sophisticated group of women for this party. But they all wanted Malka’la. “Okay,” Gella said. To be continued... LOTUS CREAM Melt some lotus cream in the microwave, make a slit with knife in center of doughnut, pour the cream into the slit and glaze the top of the doughnut. Sprinkle some caramel crunch (as illustrated in image).
INJECT Use a flavor injector to insert custard, jam, nougat cream, chocolate cream or caramel, from the sides. Or you can squeeze one of the choices into the top center of the donut, using a piping bag fitted with a pointed tip.
GLAZE Glaze with baking chocolate and sprinkles. Use Baker’s Choice Caramel glaze and drizzle with baking chocolate across the doughnut. Glaze with white baking chocolate, and make a dreidel shape in the center, which you can then decorate with sprinkles.

Jewels may serve primarily as a personal adornment, but jewel tones lend a room 24-carat flair. The winning combination of pink tourmaline hues against a cool grey background sets the ideal tone for a festive Chanukah party, and makes for a classic setting for a brunch, lunch or dinner with your loved ones.
For this casual gathering, I paired exuberant purples with contrasting steel shades, and assembled a menu to match the mood: fun and effortless foods, easy for the hostess as much as for the guest. The setup, as well, is exceptionally charming in its delightful detail, inviting your guests to fill the party with animated chatter, hearty laughter, plenty of snapshots and a bundle of wonderful memories.
Hosting a casual event allows for a lot more flexibility and leeway. Go for the opportunity and get your creative juices flowing.

I N F U S E D WAT E R Small wonder herb-infused water is all the rage these days, being aesthetically appealing, a weight-loss stimulant and energy booster. Simply arrange a variety of freshly cut fruits and herbs and get a load of how it draws young and old alike. A few winter classics for you to enjoy:
Apple-cinnamon: Enjoy the rich aromatic flavors of autumn in a tall glass. Pear, Ginger, Cinnamon, Vanilla Bean: Cinnamon and vanilla lend warm spiciness to this drink, making it the perfect antidote to chilly winter weather.
Grapefruit: A twist on the classic lemon water, with a subtle splash of fresh citrus. Lemon, Lime, Mint, Honey: Refreshing! The combination of honey and lemon is reportedly beneficial to the digestive system and skin. Orange-Blueberry: This striking combo is bursting with vitamin C, antioxidants and, of course, robust flavor.

Bruschetta (traditionally pronounced brusketta) is a classic Italian appetizer, merging the distinct flavors of fresh aromatic herbs and olive oil.
Ingredients:
Directions:
1 long baguette 1 tub Mehadrin butter blend 1 T. parsley flakes 1 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 6 cloves frozen garlic
1. Allow butter to soften. Add parsley flakes, salt and garlic and mix well. 2. Slice baguettes diagonally 1 inch apart. Spread butter generously over bread. Toast and serve alongside soup.
Being that garlic butter is (almost) a necessity in our home, we always keep a ready tub in the fridge, dramatically upgrading the simple bread and butter fare.

French Onion Soup
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter 6 large onions, sliced lengthwise 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 T. sugar 1 bay leaf 1/2 tsp. thyme 1/2 tsp. white pepper 1 T. salt 4 T. flour 2 T. onion soup mix 12 cups water 1/4 cup dry red wine Shredded cheese Directions: 1. Place butter, onions, garlic, sugar and spices into a 6-qt. covered pot over medium heat, and let simmer for 3-4 hrs until onions turn a deep amber color, mixing occasionally. 2. Remove bay leaf and discard. Add flour and onion soup mix, stirring well. 3. Add wine and water, and let simmer over low heat for an additional 1 1/2 hour. 4. Place shredded cheese into each soup bowl, ladle hot soup over cheese and allow to melt. into the Chanukah lights can be an almost hypnotic experience. The flickering flames command center stage, performing a spiritual dance against a backdrop of darkness. Most of us are familiar with that trancelike state we enter when deeply relaxed. It’s a moment in time in which we transcend the physical realms of this world and reach inward, focusing more deeply on the quiet workings that make each of us who we are. For some, these moments happen naturally, and often. For others, however, it may take help to reach that stage. Enter the hypnotist. Historically frowned upon as hocus-pocus, hypnotism (originally known as mesmerism), was touted as a phony form of medicine. In recent years, however, the field of hypnotism has proved itself as far from a farce, standing its own in the field of psychotherapy. And entertainment, of course! We caught up with Mr. Naftuli Teitelbaum, master hypnotist, to get the real scoop on what hypnotism is.
164 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 21, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
“ASKING ME TO define hypnotism is like asking ‘What is the moon?’ It’s such a broad topic; a few sentences can never sum up hypnotism,” Mr. Teitelbaum tells me. But to get an idea of what being hypnotized is like, he has me envision I’m traveling in a car, passing miles upon miles of beautiful scenery. “Twenty miles can pass by without you realizing it, because you are focused on something other than the traveling. That’s kind of how hypnotism works. It’s about being in a fully relaxed state in which you reach deeply into yourself.” But even with the gentle guidance of a hypnotist, not everyone can reach a hypnotic state. “In the broader world, it is said that only one in five people can be hypnotized on the first try. Most people are too nervous to fully relax, especially when on stage. There is a big difference between relaxing in therapy and during a show.” Certain crowds are even harder to work with. “One of the
world’s best known hypnotists asked me if I would be working with other Yidden, and when I told him yes, he told me to give up! He said that our people are too strong-minded, and that ours is the hardest group of people to hypnotize.” Having this in mind, Mr. Teitelbaum says that the success of a show depends heavily on the crowd. If the people are enthusiastic and volunteers are a dime a dozen, the subjects of hypnotism are easy to lure into a trance. If, however, the audience is mistrusting and reluctant, induction becomes harder than it should be. “I learned that lesson the hard way. Nowadays, when I book a show, I ask that four to six people should be ready to volunteer when asked. It changes the whole atmosphere and makes everyone relaxed.” And book shows he does. From sheva brachos to Chanukah parties, Mr. Teitelbaum is ready to entertain. “I’ve been in most camps more than one time,” he says, pointing out that camp is actually where it all started. “I’m the head counselor in the Bobov-45 camp, and about eleven years ago I was looking for a unique activity for a banquet. I brought in a hypnotist, and I was fascinated. I didn’t know it, but when he wasn’t performing, he was watching me. He saw the way I interacted with the kids, and he told me that he felt I’d be a good candidate to become a hypnotist.” Originally dabbling in the field as a mere hobby, Mr. Teitelbaum began perfecting his skills. He didn’t have in mind that he’d be performing in shows or guiding patients through the therapeutic process, but that’s exactly what happened. Over the years he’s built a name for himself as both talented and

trustworthy. “People know me and my mentality, and they know I won’t use anything against them. Thousands of people can attest to the fact that I have never taken advantage of others, setting them up to look foolish or do things that would make them upset at a later time. I won’t give up my Olam Haba for a few dollars.” And while his shows are no doubt entertaining, it is through one-on-one appointments that he makes significant differences in people’s lives.
HOW HYPNOSIS HELPS “After the tragic happening with Leiby Kletzky, I worked with over 150 kids. These kids had been so traumatized that they had trouble sleeping at night and would run screaming whenever they saw a stranger. I was able to be successful with many of them, baruch Hashem, and helped remove the irrational fears they harbored.” Mr. Teitelbaum explains to me that hypnosis is about speaking to the person’s brain using logical messages that are transferred to the subconscious, thereby help-
ing the person overcome the things that frighten or overwhelm him. During a deep hypnosis session the body becomes extremely relaxed, and the release of tension and anxiety allows the person to slightly separate from physicality. “It sometimes happens that when doing a show even the audience members can become partially hypnotized; I can walk over to someone and pick up his hand, which will then drop as if he were sleeping.” In that state, the mind is more receptive to concepts and ideas than when physical distractions are in the way. During hypnosis, every word the hypnotist speaks is fully heard. Whatever is spoken, however, has to be somewhat familiar to the listener in order for the brain to connect with the message. It’s like standing 25 feet away from a group of conversing friends, Mr. Teitelbaum explains, and though you are officially tuned out of the conversation, if your name is mentioned you’ll perk up because you recognize it on a subconscious level. The role of hypnotherapist is to help the hypnotized person take his previous knowledge of an item or event and form a new picture in his mind and subconscious. In the cases mentioned above, Mr. Teitelbaum worked directly with the children to reframe the fear they felt and place it within proper parameters. “Instead of running every time they saw a stranger, these kids learned to be able to distinguish between situations to truly fear, and that which were irrational. Obviously, if it is late at night and a drunken person walks up to him, it is okay to run and perhaps scream for help, but a stranger that simply walks by calmly without trying to make contact should not cause

undue distress to the child.” Messages that are transferred from the conscious to the subconscious become nearly instinctual, the same way that washing nagel vaser becomes an integral part of a Yid from a young age or ducking from a ball thrown at one’s head is a learned instinct. The messages fed to the subconscious become second nature, intrinsically connected with a person. Never fear, however, that messages sent through hypnotism can uproot the foundations that make a person who they are. “I could never make a person be mechalel Shabbos, for instance. I can never make someone do or say something that they are dead-set against,” Mr. Teitelbaum asserts. When it comes to the realm of secrets, many people are afraid that hypnotism will cause them to reveal everything. But that’s not true. “If a person is exhibiting a behavioral or mental issue caused by a traumatic event, I cannot force him to tell me what happened if he’s mentally closed himself to the possibility. What I can do is speak to the subconscious with the logical message that he’ll feel better once he’s been unburdened. Then he can more easily make the choice to open up.” Sometimes a person won’t even know what is bothering him until he undergoes hypnosis. An eleven-yearold boy who ended up in his parents’ room every night
is a prime example. After years of waking and disrupting his parents’ and his own sleep, under hypnosis, he was finally able to pinpoint what was waking him. When he was four years old there had been a fire in the house, and since that point, his body wasn’t able to relax at night. He’d seek solace in his parents’ room. Once the traumatic event was brought to light, it was possible to retrain the subconscious, allowing the boy to relax. The same goes with retraining the mind during dieting or breaking away from an addiction. Although the hypnotist cannot directly control the body nor its cravings, he can work with the mind to convince the person on a very deep level how damaging and repulsive smoking is, or that one slice of cake is more than enough. The effects of a hypnosis session last roughly two weeks, which in the case of nicotine, is long enough to remove the physical addiction from the body. What it all boils down to is the

classic Chasidic teaching that the “moach shalit al halev.” Hypnotism is a tool to help the mind rule over the desires of the heart.
MESMERIZING METHODS There are thousands of methods in which a person can hypnotize others, and it is even possible for a person to hypnotize himself, I am told. In fact, hypnotism is quite similar to meditation, and a trance-like state can be reached through storebought recordings, music or white noise, though “it’s not like going to your own personal hypnotherapist,” Mr. Teitelbaum tells me. Most of the time (especially in therapy), he’ll use a slow method of relaxing a person into the induction — though there are times that rapid hypnosis is favored. In such instances, certain techniques will be used to trick the brain quickly into a trance. Coming out of hypnosis is literally a snap. The hypnotist will often count backwards, telling the hypnotized they will awake feeling refreshed — and they do! — and many times snap the fingers for final effect. Even if left in a hypnotic state, the person will eventually wake up, because hypnosis is truly a state of sleep. A state in which our waking reality is influenced by the stuff of dreams. Are you mesmerized?
“A friend of mine called me, desperation in his voice. He had a teenage son who had stopped talking. One day, the boy had fallen silent and hadn’t spoken a word since. It had been months, and the parents had tried everything, running from one doctor to the next and to many different therapists. Nothing worked. And then they brought him to me. An hour after the boy walked in, the father put his son on the phone and he spoke to his mother. The family was in tears. It seems that the boy had been hoarse and had felt his voice becoming weaker and weaker, and one day, he just stopped talking. Mentally he had convinced himself that his voice no longer worked. I went in and reversed that faulty brain-body connection through hypnosis.”

BEHIND THE CURTAIN The Open Secrets of Stage Hypnotism
Many people have found that stage hypnotism makes for great parties. Both hosts and guests alike find this form of entertainment mesmerizing. Here are some little-known facts about stage hypnotism.
Selecting a Subject: Stage hypnotists will often look for certain personality traits in their subjects. What makes a good subject? • Concentration: Entering a hypnotic trance requires concentration. • Willingness: An unwilling participant will fight the effects of hypnosis, leaving the audience disappointed. • Imaginative: People with vivid imaginations usually make the best subjects. • Trusting: Trust is an important fact in shows of hypnotism. People want to know that the hypnotist will treat them respectfully and with dignity.
Common Misconceptions People are just being hired to act silly on stage. Oh no, under hypnosis, people will often do things that they didn’t know they were capable of! Latent talent comes to light when stripped of selfconsciousness and preconceived notions, and some people have discovered singing or acrobatic talents while under hypnosis. Hypnosis is exhausting. Subjects report awaking very refreshed from hypnosis. According to some, fifteen minutes of hypnotic sleep is equal to two-three hours of a regular sleep. You can get stuck in hypnosis and never wake up. It has never happened that a subject remained in a hypnotic state for long term. Only weak-minded people can be hypnotized. False! The most talented, assertive, professional people have been subjected are often able to be hypnotized. In fact, the higher the intelligence
168 / THE MONSEY VIEW
and self-control and the stronger the concentration, the more easily one can be hypnotized. Offering to go onto stage means you’ll embarrass yourself. Most hypnotists (like Tuli Teitelbaum) hold a person’s welfare and dignity as their top priority and will only lead the show in a direction where the subject will not be embarrassed. People reveal secrets and do things against their will under the influence of hypnosis. This very prevalent myth is wrong. In hypnosis, the subject is in control and can choose to follow or ignore the hypnotist’s suggestions. Some extroverts whose personal boundaries allow for being funny or silly onstage will enjoy this freedom, but any suggestions outside their personal boundaries will not be heeded. Hypnosis is dangerous In 1994, a panel of experts in the U.K. was set up to examine possible harm to people participating as subjects in stage hypnosis. The report was announced in the British Parliament in 1995 that “there was no evidence of serious risk to participants in stage hypnosis, and that any risk which does exist is much less significant than that involved in many other activities.”
Glimpses of Giggles: A Taste of Stage Hypnosis There are many ways that hypnosis can be hilarious. Here are some of the ways that hypnotists encourage good-hearted laughter. Be prepared though: Volunteers should be ready for good, wholesome fun in which they are stars of the show! • A volunteer is told that he has eleven fingers. He keeps recounting, always counting until eleven. • A volunteer is told that he has a cup of water on his shoe, and that he is thirsty. He keeps lifting his foot, trying to drink. • A volunteer is told that his shoe is his phone and that he should call someone. He carries on a long conversation, using his shoe as a phone.

It originates from the Latin word candere, that means “to shine.” Someone who makes candles is a chandler. Sounds almost like chandelier — does it not? Although candles are not really hung from ceilings any longer, the root form of chandelier is from the word for candle.
The most people blowing out candles simultaneously is 508. This record was set by staff of Pudong Shangri-La, Hotel & Resorts in Shanghai, China. They each held a candle and lined up to form the shape of an S to symbolize the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts brand. The hotel lit up specific guest rooms so it formed the shape of a candle. Both the symbolic candle made by lighting those rooms and the 508 candles went out simultaneously. This record attempt took place during Earth Hour on 23 March 2013 — one hour celebrated to save the earth. The Empire State Building and Eiffel Tower also turn their lights off during Earth Hour.
WHEN?
HOW?
When did candles become so popular and how?
How do “trick candles” reignite when you blow them out?
While you may think Chanukah when you see candles, up to the 20th century, candles were used every day as the primary light source. As early as 1616, the Irish government began making it mandatory to light the dark streets of Dublin with the “Candlelight Law.” It stated that “every fifth house (to) display a light within prescribed hours of the night for the guidance of street-users.” In Paris, by 1716 all housekeepers who owned a house that faced a road, lane or passage, had to put out candles on dark nights or they were fined one shilling.
Regular candles are made out of wax with a wick in the center. When you blow it out, a thin band of smoke rises upward and there is nothing there but vaporized candle wax. The wick is hot enough to vaporize the wax but not hot enough to reignite. The wicks of trick candles have magnesium in them. Magnesium ignites at a relatively low temperature. When you blow a trick candle, the leftover heat from the wick lights the magnesium and the candle reignites.

WHAT?
WHY?
What do people look for in a decorative candle today?
Why do many people use candles today if we all have electricity?
Fragrance first. Color and shape second. That explains why Yankee Candles, a most popular scented candle company, has over 150 scents but mostly standardized shapes for all their candles. The first scented candles were said to smell from cinnamon. The fragrance was made in India by boiling the fruit of the cinnamon tree. The first scented candles in the American colonies were made in the bayberry scent, but it took a huge amount of bayberry leaves to produce a single candle and so their popularity dwindled.
Aside from the many uses candles have in Jewish life, such as for Shabbos, Yom Tov, and Chanukah (of course!), many use candles to make a room cozy and fragrant. Of candle users, about 42% burn candles in the living room, followed by the 18% in the kitchen and 13% in other rooms. 90% of all candles sold today are scented candles. If you are a woman, chances are you have bought a candle in your life. 96% of all candles are bought by women today.
WHO?
THE MOST EXPENSIVE
Who are the oldest chandlers?
Got $5,000 to spare?
Rathborne Candles, a candlemaker in Dublin gets the award for being the oldest continuously trading company in the world. They were already in business four years before Columbus discovered America! The company opened in 1488! How did they survive all those years? For one, in the 1800s, Rathborne Candles had been hired by the Irish government to light all of Dublin’s streets with candles and to supply candles to all the lighthouses around the coast.
The most expensive candle you can buy is called The Ultimate Luxury Candle and its fragrance is Champagne Noir Soy. It’s embellished with a Diamond Bow Necklace designed by Bucci Jewelry & Design. The necklace is designed with thirty-eight diamonds set in 14k white gold and is packaged in a black box with a white satin bow. All yours for just under $5,000.00.
Today, there are candles that sing or reignite in every color of the rainbow. But thousands of years ago the choice was white tallow candles ...or white tallow candles. Tallow is the white fat of cattle or sheep. (It was also used to make soap and margarine.) It had a terrible odor and the flame was very smoky when it burned. During the Middle Ages, people began using beeswax. It didn’t smell bad and burned cleaner, but was very expensive. It was therefore used sparingly. Today, consumers can buy candles made of soy, soy blends, gels and beeswax.

Real Estate The Best Chanukah Present Ever THIS STORY WAS TOLD TO me about ten years ago. I thought this was the appropriate time to share it with you! I was sitting at an event. As it sometimes happens, some women grouped together in a corner, myself included. And what always happens when I am present, is that I start hearing all the home buying stories, the successes and the nightmares. But the following story was a first! The woman sitting next to me related her home purchase experience. She shared how she and her husband had been searching for a home without success. They had many musts. They needed to be close to a specific shul. They had a budget, and there were simply no homes available that fit their criteria. Weekend after weekend they looked at homes, over a span of more than a year. They looked at everything available, even as far as 45 minutes away from the shul that they were members of, but nothing worked out. And when they finally almost went into contract on a home, they were outbid. Meanwhile they were living in a home owned by a family member. The home was old and falling apart. There were two bathrooms. In one bathroom, the toilet wasn’t working and in the other, the shower didn’t function. Everything was old and falling apart. The house needed a new kitchen, new carpets and a serious paint job. The windows were thin, the home needed insulation and it was cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. I could tell from her description that she was living in very decrepit living quarters. They didn’t want to fix the house because it needed so much work and it wasn’t theirs and they were really looking to move. It was getting so bad that she finally told her husband that they needed to fix the bathrooms so at least they both would function properly. Her husband agreed and they chose a motzei Shabbos, the one right before Chanukah, to go to Home Depot to choose tiles, a shower door and plumbing fixtures. They cleaned up after Shabbos, and she and her husband left for their outing. As they got into the car, her husband told her that

The house was large but very dark. Not a light was on. The woman asked her husband, “Do you think she is home?”
he had to deliver something to an elderly lady. He was in a service business and it seemed that a woman had come into his shop and requested an item which he didn’t have. He ordered it and it came Friday afternoon. He wanted to bring it to her since it was difficult for such an elderly lady to come out in the cold and to pick the item up herself. This was before GPSes were common. Her husband thought he knew the address but he kept on getting lost. He made a mistake and he went around in circles. He didn’t have the telephone number of the elderly woman on him to get directions. Finally, after about 20 minutes of circling the neighborhood, he pulled into a driveway. The house was large and very dark. Not a light was on. The lawn didn’t look well kept.
Going the extra mile!
This woman asked her husband, “Do you think she is home? It is so dark.” Her husband said, “She should be home. Maybe you should walk with me to the door; I don’t want her to be frightened when I knock on the door….” They knocked on the door. No answer. Again they knocked on the door. They were about to leave when suddenly the door opened. The lights flicked on and a large group of people shouted, “SURPRISE!” The woman related that she didn’t know what was happening. All of her kids and her mother-in-law were in the house! They grabbed her hand and said, “Mommy, come look!” This house was her house! Her husband bought her this home, without telling her, right before Chanukah! She went from room to room, pinching herself because it didn’t seem real. The house was large; there were six bedrooms. It was much more of a home than she had ever imagined. She had no idea how her husband had pulled it off, and boy was she shocked. At the time when she related the story she had lived in the new house for three months and it still hadn’t sunk in. She was overwhelmingly happy. She couldn’t believe that this beautiful home was hers. What a unique Chanukah gift! And for this woman, what a stress-free process!
