INSPIRED BY THE DREIDEL I wanted to share an inspiring post-Chanukah message with your readers: The dreidel has an important message. It spins, and when it falls we can only see the one upper side of the dreidel. Life, too, seems to be spinning; we are sometimes caught up in a whirlwind. We have to remember that just as when the dreidel falls and we can only see one side of it, so too in life we can never see the full view. With our very limited vision we can only see and perceive but one angle, but we know there is far more than meets the eye and that Hashem always has a master plan. We know and believe He is the One who turns the wheel of life and He Who creates and can see the whole picture can perform for us nissim which to us, with our limited vision, may seem impossible. So if things in life don’t seem to be falling on gimmel, don’t give up! The One Who keeps the world spinning can also spin miracles, בימים ההם בזמן הזה.

I want to thank Tomchei Shabbos and all the people that help put the food together and the wonderful drivers that do the delivery in such a quick and quiet way. Thank you, thank you! It was Erev Chanukah, Thursday afternoon, and my kids were saying, “What type of Chanukah will we have? We are so poor we don’t have money to buy even basic clothing!” (My kids have only one pair of pants or one pair of tights and the babies only have summer pajamas to wear all day.) “My shoes are torn!” said one child. “Mommy, we are poor!” I was trying so hard not to cry, but I couldn’t say anything to comfort them. I know the truth: Yes, we are poor. No money for cleaning help; just no money. Not a penny. My husband doesn’t even have a coat! I don’t have the basics. The list goes on and on... When everyone was sleeping that night and I didn’t know what to do, my Tomchei Shabbos order was delivered. I was so, so excited to

see they had put in gifts for kids of all ages. Now I had something to give my kids, and yes, everyone was so, so happy. Thank you Tomchei Shabbos for lighting up our night! A Mother in Pain P.S. Yes, my husband has a job.
THE TRUTH ABOUT KOLLEL LIFE SPINOFF OF: ONE CHANCE AT CHILDHOOD I was very disturbed by the portrayal of a kollel man’s/wife’s lifestyle in last week’s issue, and although that wasn’t the point of the letter, I’m still bothered by the message it generates. There may be people whose lives are like that, but being that it’s the viewpoint of one individual, I’d like to take the liberty of sharing with you my lifestyle, which I share with many, many friends. My husband is learning in kollel, Baruch Hashem, something he has been doing for the past decade, and we are very grateful to Hashem Yisborach. His daily schedule starts at 6 a.m. when he tears himself out of bed to rush to kollel boker, no matter what time he’s hit his pillow the night before. With the aid of a coffee, he manages to push in an hour or two of learning before his davening. I’ve never tried learning at dawn, but I can’t believe it to be too easy. After davening, he’s home to help with the kids and eat a quick breakfast. (No, we can’t afford to pick something up at the cafe…) He usually tries to squeeze in a tenminute nap to refresh himself, but it’s not always a possibility. He then rushes to kollel (by foot, most kollel yungerleit I know do not own a car) and settles in for a 3½ hour seder. And if you think he’s sitting and relaxing, like when you’re reading a good book, just know there’s a lot of sweat and energy poured into deciphering that blatt of Shulchan Aruch. A lot of effort goes in to keep up to par and to swing the monthly farher. After seder, he has a 1½-hour lunch break, to eat lunch, take a
32 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 4, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
nap when possible, and to take care of all the technical details of his life that have to happen in this small time slot. (There are no Sundays off to pay bills and fix leaking sinks.) At 3:30 he’s back at seder for a long stretch until 7:00 p.m. And if you think that after a long and exhausting day he’s relaxing on the couch, then come visit and watch how he helps his (also exhausted) wife get the children into bed, his empty stomach waiting patiently. He usually has less than 20 minutes for dinner, leaving for his nightly chavrusa less than an hour after he came in. His chavrusashaft is a parsha of its own, how they learn religiously every single day, be it Chanukah, the night of a wedding or whatever else, sometimes pushing in their learning at other times (don’t ask me when!) so as not to miss a day! If you think that that’s enough for one day, he still sits down to learn his daily mussar and to finish up some learning before heading to bed. (How’s that for winding down?) That’s so beautiful and inspiring, but what about his wife? you wonder. The secret is that most kollel yungerleit have tremendous respect and appreciation for their wives for supporting their learning. They express it constantly in words and actions. I’ve heard from my husband countless times that the credit for his learning is mine. So many fathers take a big share of childcare on themselves, either babysitting during their (2-hour!) lunch break, or by walking (running!) with a double carriage to drop off the children at the babysitter and playgroup. I personally watch a father putting his child on the bus and then running like the wind to catch his ride to his out-of-thearea kollel. I know of another father who picks up his baby after seder and watches the kids until his wife wakes up from a nap, something they have established as a necessity after her morning of teaching. Most husbands feel very indebted to their wives and will do anything to make it easier for them. I know
of husbands who wash the floors, are content with scrambled eggs for supper, who take children to the doctor and encourage their wives to take a nap while they get the kids into bed! But you’re still asking: How does the wife feel about this? What about the poor women in this “broken system having no choice and doing not what they want but what they must”? Newsflash: This is what we want to be doing! I’m so thankful that I have a husband who’s ready to sweat and toil in Hashem’s Torah, that I’m glad to work hard while trying to be a good mother and seeing the siyata d’Shmaya in my life. I feel like Hashem is telling me: “You do your part and I’ll help you!” When it gets to a point that a woman feels that she can’t do it anymore, that’s when it’s time to reevaluate. Usually, that’s when the husband gets a job. If a woman feels forced to continue working, then there might be some communication issues or other factors, which are a totally different issue. Now, if you think it’s wrong for parents to work to support their children financially, then know that most parents want to help their children, whether they’re learning or not, just as they help them with physical and emotional support. And if their child is a talmid chochom, there’s all the more reason to want to help them. My father is a businessman (who also gets up at dawn for a shiur no matter what time he goes to sleep and is probably as big as a talmid chochom as the letterwriter’s husband). But the way he respects and admires my husband and his other son-in-law for their full-time learning is unbelievable! When he wants to give us money, and we try to give it back because we know he needs it, he waves it off saying that this is a very profitable business expense because in this zechus he’ll do better in his business! It’s an honor and zechus for parents to have children who are holding up the entire world with their Torah! One last point I feel needs to be mentioned is that the reason
our men are learning is not to become great talmidei chachamim. It’s very nice that one can become the greatest talmid chochom on the block from a daily shiur, but that isn’t the goal. They learn because that’s what Hashem wants them to do and because every minute, every second, of Torah is priceless! Immeasurable. We don’t fully understand what every word of Torah is worth and how without it the world would collapse. So if there’s a yungerman sitting and learning and is not retaining the learning, he’s not wasting time, but gathering millions! If we’d remember this there’d be more respect for the kollel men around us and no one would tout the kollel system that our gedolim have established as necessary in today’s difficult generation as a “broken system.” Being that Monsey is, Baruch Hashem, a large Torah community with thousands of kollel yungerleit I’d venture to say that 30-35% of Monsey families are kollel families. This is one of the beautiful aspects of Monsey, and its light is shining to other cities around us and spreading across the entire world. Please give these men and women of valor the honor (and support) they deserve. A Proud Kollel Wife
With deepest respect to you, Aching-hearted Mother and Grandmother — for I am young enough to be your daughter, and maybe even your granddaughter — I feel that I must correct some of your misconceptions. Firstly, I feel obligated to stick up for my husband of ten years, and for many other kollel yungerleit that I know. Of course, there are always those who take advantage of a situation; it’s not fair to judge an entire system by a few abusers. They are the exception. A kollel yungerman has a more strenuous schedule than most people. It takes tremendous selfsacrifice to persist day after day. To begin with, which kollel yungerman owns or leases a car?! We don’t have the funds to cover rent! With tremendous mesiras nefesh, these
men trudge in deep snow, sweat in the scorching heat, traipse in the vicious downpours, not wishing to miss even one seder. Many of them walk over an hour a day just getting to and from their destination! Food from a cafe? Huh? An hour or two to eat lunch and a nap? Maybe the men a year after their wedding have time for that. Were you to look out of your window between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m., you’d see many racing with a single or double stroller. In this meager hour between morning and afternoon seder, many of them hurry to pick up the baby from the sitter, and perhaps also a toddler from playgroup. They arrive home, exhausted, kids in tow, to attempt to grab a bite before rushing back to kollel. Afternoon finds them battling to keep their eyes open and concentrate over the Gemara, before many of them uphold tutoring jobs to supplement their meager stipend. The scant hour home for supper usually involves putting kids to bed, doing homework with the boys, taking care of paperwork etc., quite contrary what you wrote: how they come home well rested to an exhausted wife. I’m not minimizing the wife’s exhaustion (it is me writing, after all). It’s just not the way you depicted it. All this that I just expanded upon doesn’t hold a candle to their most difficult struggles, such as struggling to concentrate when other issues are foremost in their mind, feelings of inferiority when facing people who share your uncomplimentary opinions, financial concerns weighing heavily on their shoulders, just to name a few. And most of all, are you not aware of the tremendous toil it takes to plow through the pages of Gemara? My mind is unfortunately not clear enough to recall the various mamarei Chazal and such that state how hard it is to learn Torah. Of course, learning in kollel is not for everyone. One must carefully evaluate their individual situation to ensure that they are able to continue in this most lofty pursuit. I greatly admire your husband, whom you described as a talmid chochom who

learns at dawn before working. I do know some other people like that and that is wonderful and beautiful. But before making such disparaging remarks about learning men, please keep in mind that the world stands on Torah. We should chas v’shalom not discourage them, because we need them! You mentioned that you babysit your grandkids on occasion, kol hakavod to you! That is tremendous support, both physically and emotionally. A Kollel Wife
I felt the letter in Issue #80 must be responded to. Not all kollel men are the way that was described and I hope the type described is the exception more than the rule. It is the couple’s responsibility to go to marriage counseling in such a situation where the wife is taking full responsibility of raising the kids and the husband, as was suggested, is taking advantage of the hard work of others. The majority of kollel men work hard at learning. Of course, on top of that they should be taking equal responsibility of raising their families. I think that the norm in most kollel families is that both husband and wife should be soluted in the work they are doing in raising children al pi derech Torah and both work equally hard in raising their family in addition. A Reader
Dear Aching-hearted Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother, You wrote of many things that worry you, but one topic you touched on I cannot leave unanswered. You depicted a scenario which seems like an extreme exception, not chas v’shalom, the norm. In my experience, things are quite the opposite. The women whose husbands are in kollel choose happily and gladly to support their husband’s learning. (Yes, their kesubos are the same, hence the choice.) This was done with the knowledge that their husbands, who learn full time b’iyun, hold up the world. Married for well over a decade, I can tell you, that it may be rough at times, yet the conviction of my decision holds. And as the tuition and rent increase, I take on more hours of work so my husband can be ameil b’torah, so he can truly toil in learning. (No, not go to the cafe or shmooze!) I understands as the wife of a kollel yungerman, that by choosing full-time learning with a simple lifestyle to match, I have chosen the ultimate jackpot. Choosing kollel means being m’vater on financial pleasures and choosing lower materialistic standards as well as making other materialistic sacrifices. We, holding the banner of Torah, are not living in an olam hufoch! The bountiful bracha and hatzlacha my family gains from the power of mesiras nefesh and ameilus b’torah are priceless. M.T.

As told to: Basya Lev
MY BROTHER MADE a voch nacht on a Thursday night. He asked me if he could use my refrigerator to store the extra food until the next day. I said yes, and so on Friday, after the bris, he came to my house and prepared small portions of the food, planning to give it out to various people. He prepared one 9x13 portion of cholent for himself. Knowing that his wife was with the baby at Aim B’Yisroel and he would be staying by himself for Shabbos, I asked him what he needed so much cholent for. He shrugged and answered that he would eat the leftovers during the week. That Motzei Shabbos he called me up to tell me an exciting event of hashgacha pratis that happened to him and his 9X13-pan of cholent over Shabbos. There had been a simcha in shul. Food had been put on the hot plate before Shabbos. However, the person that plugged it in didn’t realize this type of hot plate needed to be turned on with a switch as well. Unfortunately, when it was time to give out the cholent and kugel, they found it to be cold and spoiled. My brother ran over to his house next door and brought back his 9x13 pan of cholent. The baal simcha was very grateful.

Foods That Seem Dietetic but Aren’t Waistline Friendly Over Chanukah we received many questions from clients about different foods being served at parties. A lot of the foods that people asked about were foods that at first glance seem diet friendly but are actually not very good for your weight loss. Below are some of the most common foods that fall under this category. 1. Whole wheat bagels: While it is always a good idea to choose whole wheat options over regular options, bagels really aren’t a good option at all. A nice-sized bagel can easily have 350-400 calories (before being filled with tuna, egg salad or cream cheese). This is the equivalent of approximately six slices of the recommended whole wheat bread! So having a bagel is like having three full sandwiches! Something to think about next time you are at a bris or siyum! 2. Carrot muffins, apple cobblers, zucchini cookies and the like: We are so conditioned to believe that foods that incorporate fruits and vegetables are good for us that we forget that what we are really
eating is cake. Packed with flour, sugars, oils and calories, these foods often appear at Shabbos or yom tov meals or as “healthier” dessert options. Don’t be fooled. Fruits or vegetables that find their way into a recipe that is filled with white flour, sugar and oil does not change the fact that it is filled with calories. It just makes us more likely to eat it even when we are on diets. 3. Vegetable chips, kale chips, Terra sticks, etc: We all know to stay far away from foods like potato chips that not only are very high in fat and calories, because they are fried, but also have an addictive quality, where having just a few chips is never enough! It even says so on the Pringles can: “Once You Pop You Can’t Stop!” That’s their actual motto! Or how about Lay’s potato chips slogan: “Bet you can’t eat just one!” Snacks like vegetable chips, Terra sticks and sweet potato chips, however, seem much more dietetic. They aren’t. They have very similar fat and calorie content to their regular potato chip counterparts, and because they seem so innocent, people are more likely to eat a lot at a time. 4. Diet sodas: When clients ask me
THE BALANCING BOCHUR: Sruli Englander* Height: 5'8 | Starting weight: 180 pounds Current weight: 170 pounds | Weight lost this week: 2 pounds I am so proud of myself! I lost two pounds over Chanukah. I would have been happy even if I stayed the same weight, because I had a few different Chanukah parties last week and I had one doughnut and two latkes. I guess it was worth it that the rest of the time I stuck to my food plan!

about drinking diet sodas, I usually give the following long-winded answer: It depends on what the diet soda is replacing. If it is being used to replace regular soda, in order to break a soda-drinking habit, it is definitely a better option. If the diet soda is being used to quench thirst, I strongly discourage it because it won’t hydrate or help the metabolism the way water does and can even have a dehydrating effect. The third scenario is the trickiest. This is when the diet soda is being used as a tool in order to help you avoid tempting food, or to hold you back from overeating, such as at a simcha or restaurant. In this situation a cold diet drink might be just what you need. However, recent studies have found something very interesting: Diet sodas can have similar effect as regular sodas on your blood sugar, because your brain recognizes the sweetness and tells your body to treat it as if it were regular sugar. This in turn means that your blood sugar may spike and then fall, and you will be left craving sugar. So using diet soda as a tool to avoid tempting food can potentially backfire by actually making sugar cravings stronger. 1. Almond flour: Almond flour is often used in gluten-free products because it is grain free and quite nutritious. However, a cup of almond flour has 650 calories, while a cup of whole wheat flour only has 400. So changing a recipe to almond flour in order to make it healthier is counterproductive. Even people who are sensitive to gluten should look for options other than almond flour.
2. Salads: My clients who know me well know that I avoid using the word salad. Instead, I encourage them to eat vegetables with their meals. What do I have against salads? Well, nothing as long as they consist solely of non-starchy vegetables and a bit of light dressing on the side. But this isn’t what most people think of when they hear the word salad. Salads bring to mind croutons, craisins, mangos and berries, glazed nuts, starchy vegetables, ramen noodles, sunflower seeds, oil and/or mayonnaise measured by the cupful. In fact, a salad can easily have more calories than a big bowl of pasta, but it sounds so much more innocent. I’ll even go so far as to tell clients that if they are at an evening simcha (after dinner) and want to make the best choice for weight loss, they should hit the fruit platters rather than helping themselves to a plate of salad. Although fruit generally has more calories than vegetables, it definitely has fewer calories than “salads.” Also, when we eat fruits we know exactly what we are eating, even if we do end up having a bit extra, while with “salads,” it’s all a mystery! The common thread among all these foods is that because they seem healthy we are more likely to eat them or eat too much of them. Being aware of the pitfalls of healthy-sounding foods will help you avoid unnecessary and unintentional calories! Hilchos Shabbos zin Y. Weissmandl By Rebbet
What are the halachos pertaining to snow on Shabbos? • It is assur to make snowballs or a snowman on Shabbos, even with snow that fell before Shabbos, because sticking snow together falls under the issur of boneh (building). • It is assur to shake snow off garments, hats, shtreimelach, etc. on Shabbos because of the issur of melaben. However, one may lightly shake off the outer layer of snow that is not stuck to the garment. • One may remove snow from garments that don’t absorb water, such as raincoats etc. • It is permitted to shake snow out of hair. • One is not permitted to dissolve snow or ice with one’s hands because it is considered domeh lemolid. • Rain is not considered muktzah because according to Chazal rain already exists in the atmosphere before Shabbos. Therefore, when it rains on Shabbos the existing precipitation is simply descending to the ground and is not considered nolad. • Water that came into existence on Shabbos, for example, water dripping from an air conditioner, is muktza because it was newly created on Shabbos1. • According to most poskim snow is not muktzah and is comparable to rain which was already in the atmosphere before it came down. However, the Igras Moshe is of the opinion that snow is muktzah and it’s considered like water that was newly created on Shabbos. • It is assur to lift snow from the ground on Shabbos, because it is considered a part of the ground and therefore falls under the issur of chofer (digging) or boneh. • One may walk or step on snow even if footsteps are formed, and some snow melts. • In areas that have an eiruv, one may use a snow shovel to remove snow from the path of all public places, or even in private places where there is a risk of somebody hurting themselves. (It’s a mitzvah to do so.) This should only be done on a paved path.. • If there is ice on the paved ground in a public place, or steps, or in any place where there is a risk of someone falling, one may put down salt to dissolve the ice. (It’s a mitzvah to do so.) 1 Therefore, one may not put a keli under the air conditioner because it renders the keli muktzah due to it becoming a receptacle to an object that is muktzah. However if one puts a little fruit juice in that keli before the water of the air conditioner gets accumulated, it is muttar.
Feel free to submit your short Hilchos Shabbos questions to comments@themonseyview.com

YOU ARE PUTTERING AROUND your house one Tuesday morning, washing the dishes and wiping down the countertops, while mentally trying to work out how much each of your sisters need to chip in for your mother’s birthday present. Your husband is at work, the older ones are in school, and your baby is napping upstairs. The house is quiet, and you are reveling in getting your work done with no distractions.

And then you see it: a thin, gray tail protruding between your oven and dishwasher. Could it be? You back away slowly, holding your breath, frantically willing it to be your daughter’s arts and crafts from last week. It moves slightly. You jump back. Then it emerges. It’s a mouse. “EEEEEEeeeek!” you shriek, abandoning all pretense of being a sane adult. You hop onto a kitchen stool as the mouse races past where your feet were just a moment ago! WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? Luckily, your phone is on the table nearby, so you reach for it, trying to maintain your balance on the stool at the same time. Whom to call? Your husband, of course. But his phone goes straight to voicemail and you remember he told you about an important meeting he was having today, so his phone would be off. You need an exterminator, and fast. You remember the Business Magnet on your fridge that has listings of local pest-control experts, but from your precarious perch, you can’t read the numbers. What should you do? YOU CALL YOUR FRIEND, WHO TELLS YOU ABOUT JEWISH 411, a service of Business Magnet. You dial 1-855-855-2324, and a friendly voice answers. You blurt out your problem, and the sweet voice on the other end says, “Sure, no problem. I’ll connect you to an exterminator now.” Phew! After the exterminator leaves your house with your unwelcome guest in the back

of his truck, promising to come back and check on the other traps he has laid all over your kitchen, you decide to leave the house to do some errands. Your local dry cleaners is closed yet again for some legal holiday, and you need to give in a sweater urgently. You decide to try the nice people at Jewish 411 again, hoping they’ll be able to help you. They transfer your call to another nearby dry cleaners, who verifies they are open today, and you quickly drive over. Jewish 411 to the rescue again!
“Sometimes you need a phone number and you are not near your fridge,” Shlomo Klein says. He created Jewish 411 to fill precisely this need.
SHLOMO KLEIN, OWNER OF BUSINESS MAGNET, the wildly popular magnetic listing of local businesses and service providers, has expanded to offer yet another service to the Monsey community. “I started the Business Magnet in 2010, and we now distribute it in 16 locations. But sometimes you need a phone number and you are not near your fridge,” he says. He created Jewish 411 to fill precisely this need. Friendly operators are on standby during business hours each day to transfer your call to any one of the Business Magnet advertisers. You don’t need to write down dozens of phone
numbers; all you have to remember is one phone number, and the folks at Jewish 411 will connect you to the business you are trying to reach. Think of it as a personal phone operator for the heimishe olam! Jewish 411 receives over 200 calls on an average day! For business owners, Jewish 411 is an added value to their advertising on the Business Magnet. When a caller is transferred to, say, a clothing store, the owner gets an email telling them the call came through Jewish 411, allowing him or her to track the amount of calls they get as a direct result of their investment. A winwin for both business owners and customers! Jewish 411 is also available online at Jewish411.net, with a mobile app coming soon. Business owners can use the site to interact with customers, by posting coupons or valuable deals, hours of operation, and other important information on this simple-touse search engine. SO WHO CALLS JEWISH 411? “Everyone and anyone,” says Shlomo Klein. People of all ages call and are cheerfully transferred to any of Jewish 411’s advertisers. “We get a lot of phone calls from

CHAPTER 22
Sun on
Stone Recap: Gella takes Malka’la shopping for a dress for the fundraising party. They find a dress that seems tailor-made for Malka’la, but she refuses to wear it. GELLA FELT LIKE SHE WAS marrying off a daughter. What other occasion, like this one, was a culmination of building and releasing, creating and letting go? She felt a tightness in each of her muscles, a fear, an excitement — happiness and disappointment and rage and thrill all dancing the hora inside her, round and round, faster and faster, until someone would fall, or lift off the ground, transcending the minutiae of making it all work together. “The tables are fabulous,” Pessy
Esther to do the pickup of cooked foods from all the volunteers, but Esther hadn’t been able to finish the entire list of addresses before two o’clock, when her youngest got home, and Gella was forced to finish the rounds in her own station wagon. Then, at four, she realized she’d never be able to do it all herself, and she enlisted her son’s help, but of course he couldn’t just drop everything at his office and run. People had already started calling her: “My food is sitting on the counter, should I put in the

She patted the peach-colored tablecloths on which settings of gold and white stood ready. “And this Malka’la. I’m so excited to be hosting the party for her. She seems like a very, very special person.” “She is. Baruch Hashem we are doing this. I’m so happy we are helping her.” The kitchen smelled sublime. Today had been sheer insanity. She’d asked her neighbor

fridge?” Hendel had asked, and by the time Gella got the third phone call, she didn’t pick up, just waited for it to stop ringing so she could call Heshy again and beg him — in a near-screaming voice — to leave already. Pick up the rest of the food already. Because it was late already. So the foods were only starting to arrive now, and they were warming up and smelling so good, but the nerves, the anxiety she was contending with… oh.
She sighed deeply. And straightened out the seventh setting on the table, wanting to go out to the foyer to make sure the entryway, where the donations would come in, was laid out appealingly, with enough space for crowds to rush in and still have enough room to approach the women who would be sitting and collecting, and then continue onward into the hall, without blocking foot traffic. Pessy still wanted to say something. She was standing at the mezuzah, just looking at Gella and Gella looked up, instructing herself to smile. “So, this Malka’la. She’d be great for your son, Heshy. She’s an almanah. I’m sure you’ve thought of it. You seem to really like her.” Gella whirled around to the nearest table and started refolding the napkin. “No.” She shook her head. She dared to look at Pessy again. “No.” She went toward the foyer. Was the entrance big enough for a huge crowd? Maybe people wouldn’t really come? They said they would. “No. That could never work. Malka’la? For my…” She couldn’t even say the two names in one

sentence. It was preposterous. Humbling to the point of degradation. “Thank you, anyway.” People might not come after all. And the peach was too strong under Pessy’s lighting. She should have gone with something more cream. And the tables were empty. She hadn’t thought of a centerpiece, because for heaven’s sake, this was a tzedakah party, a spur-of-the-moment tzedakah party, and hadn’t she done enough? Something smelled like it was burning. So… her friends had thought, all along, when they were helping her do this, to make this party, they had all thought that she was doing it… for herself? For her own Heshy’s shidduch? Wait. She ran to check the oven. Where was the sliced pineapple? Wasn’t Miriam Schwartz supposed to do that? Gella had planned to pick it up after she picked up her own shoes from the shoe repair, because it was in that area, but she hadn’t had time to pick up her shoes, instead settling on another pair, and now the pineapple wasn’t here. “The pineapple is not here,” she told Pessy, but Pessy had gone back upstairs. In the dining room, a pre-party, eerie calm reigned. It scared her. She dialed Heshy. “Yes.” His patience was nearing the end of the road. “The pineapple. We completely forgot the pineapple. We need it first thing. Go to Schwartz.” “Mommy, it’s been a very long day.” “I know. But the party. Only forty minutes and people will be here, and I’m not even yet ready. I need to hop into the car, and the pineapple is not here.”

Heshy sighed. “I don’t know why I’m doing this,” he said. “We’re all doing it for our guest. And for her children.” And… for yourself? No, never, she thought. The idea was so ludicrous. Painfully so. The nerve of her friend to suggest it. And just now, right before the party. Why didn’t she do it over the phone when she’d never have to face Pessy again? “Can you just go drive over for me? I’m so exhausted. Do it for the mitzvah, that’s why. And by the way, I’d like to see a generous donation from you,” she snapped. “It’s called tzedakah.” “I think I’ve been doing tzedakah all day.” If she didn’t go home now, to get ready, she never would. Malka Baila was already here — her hands moisturized and her glasses hanging on a gold chain — and ready. “Can you take over?” Gella begged her. “I’m running home, getting ready,” “You look beautiful to me,” Malka Baila said. “Picking up Malka’la, the speaker, I’ll be back just in time for the

I have this.” Gella raced home, the slow driver in front of her slowing her down enough to feel the adrenaline pumping, pumping, coursing through her wrists and ankles and the side of her throat. She took a right, and was home, and ran into the house, and if she wanted to be on time, she was fooling herself thinking she could still shower. There was Malka’la. herself with Gella’s image? She looked terrible. Never for her son. Never. She couldn’t wait to make the money, assuage her guilt, and send this woman back to Jerusalem, to her children, where she belonged. “I’ll be right down,” Gella said tightly. She ran upstairs and slipped into the other shoes — the second pair, not the ones she had wanted to present herself in when she hosted the entire community like this. She donned her wool sweater, the one with the multihued, bubbled threads. She clipped on her favorite earrings.
She touched up her makeup. Looking into the mirror, she couldn’t help being flooded by the image of her ex-daughter-in-law, the eye of the family, the pride, the joy. She had been such a catch — prominent family, elegant girl, so poised that people said she was stately. And then Heshy had deteriorated. He went from being his best self, to being just himself, to being a shadow of his former self. And then the divorce. She lost that daughter-in-law. As much as she harbored anger for that woman, for destroying her son, and his life, and leaving him to be alone, possibly forever, she still felt a terrible twinge. For losing her. For losing that outer wrapping, that image, what had seemed to be such a catch. And that girl — she had gone ahead in life — was married again. Heshy wasn’t. Possibly never. But not to Malka’la. Not to someone who looked like Malka’la. If Gella ever succumbed and married her son off, for his own good, to Malka’la... Her shoulders ached from being drawn in so tightly. Tomorrow, Malka’la was going home. Hopefully with enough money. I can’t wait for this to be over, she thought. To be continued... Ground Meat Ideas The backbone of many classic American dishes, ground meat is the most popular form of beef sold, for good reason. Here are a few ways you can incorporate it into your weekly dinner menu.

MIDDLE EASTERN MEAT SKEWERS This is a great supper; filling and delicious. INGREDIENTS: 4 slices bread, crusts removed 2 pounds ground meat 1 egg 2 egg whites 2 ½ tablespoons shawarma spice 2 teaspoons cumin ¾ cup techina Pita Vegetables Techina
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. Place bread in a medium bowl and cover with water. Let soak for 10 minutes. Drain well. 3. Combine ground meat, egg, egg whites, spices, techina and drained bread. Mix well. 4. Wet your hands to prevent meat mixture from sticking to them and form balls. You should get about 50 balls. 5. Thread 5 balls onto each skewer and place skewers on a cookie sheet. Image is for illustrative purposes only.
6. Bake for 10 minutes and then broil for an additional 8 minutes. 7. Serve alongside pita, vegetables and more techina.
SEASONED CHEF: If you’re finding the mixture too sticky or soft to roll into nice balls, you can refrigerate the mixture until it firms up a bit (about an hour).

GOOD. OLD-FASHIONED MEATLOAF
There are so many different things you can add to a meatloaf to make it a little more exciting. One idea is to place a layer of meat mixture, cover that with mashed potatoes and layer the rest of the meat mixture over the mashed potatoes. Then, bake just as you would the regular meatloaf. INGREDIENTS: ½ cup flavored bread crumbs ¾ cup soy milk 2 pounds ground meat 1 egg ¼ cup + 1/3 cup ketchup, divided 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon pepper
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. Combine flavored breadcrumbs and soy milk in a small bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes. 3. In a large bowl, place ground meat, egg, ¼ cup ketchup, spices and breadcrumb mixture. Mix until just combined; don’t over-mix. 4. On a lined cookie sheet, form meat mixture into a loaf shape, about 12x4 inches. 5. Place 1/3 cup ketchup in a plate, and using a pastry brush, brush entire meatloaf with ketchup. 6. Bake meatloaf for 50 minutes, brushing twice in the middle with reserved ketchup.

MEAT AND MUSHROOM POCKETS These pockets are very freezer friendly. When you want to pull them out for supper, just brush with the egg wash and bake. INGREDIENTS: 1 tablespoon oil 1 large onion, diced 2 cans mushrooms, drained 3 tablespoons mushroom soup mix 2 cups warm water 1 pound ground meat 1 pack puff pastry (10 in a pack) Beaten egg, for brushing
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a large saucepan, sauté the diced onion in the oil until onion is soft and wilted, about 10 minutes. Add the drained mushrooms and continue to sauté for an additional 15 minutes. 3. Mix the mushroom soup mix with the water and add to the saucepan. Cook partially covered, over medium heat, until the mixture thickens, about 15 minutes. Let cool. 4. Combine half of the mushroom mixture with the ground meat. 5. Line pastry squares on prepared baking sheet while they are still semi frozen. Place ½ cup meat-mushroom mixture on one side of each pastry square. Fold over to form rectangle and crimp edges. Brush with beaten egg and poke a hole on top to let the air vent. 6. Bake for 40 minutes. Serve alongside reserved mushroom sauce.

Proposed Business Improvement District Could Bring Benefits to Monsey’s Largest Shopping Area (The Journal News) BETTER SIDEWALKS, TRASH collection, landscape and marketing campaigns may be in store for the Monsey/ Spring Valley shopping area as the owner of the Town Square shopping center has contacted Ramapo Town Hall about creating a Business Improvement District that could bring positive changes to benefit both business owners and shoppers. Hoping that the proposed BID will improve the retail experience and improve pedestrian safety, Yossi Brachfeld, owner of the Town Square shopping center has asked the Town of Ramapo for help creating the BID. By forming a BID, local business owners would work together, pooling resources for services that are common to all and as the largest shopping center in the BID area, Brachfeld’s Town
Square would contribute the largest amount of funds to the BID. The proposed bid could cover the area from the Atrium to Remsen Avenue on Route 59, possibly extending northward on Route 306 as far as Maple Avenue. Brachfeld’s lawyer, Ryan Karben, estimated that there are more than 100 retail businesses located within a half of a mile of the busy intersection of Routes 59 and 306. “A business improvement district
would strengthen and uplift our downtown,” said Michael Tauber, manager of the Monsey Mall, which houses fifteen stores. “I look forward to participating in this exciting community endeavor.”
Statewide Minimum Wage Increases Takes Effect (Governor Cuomo’s Office) DESPITE PROTESTS BY small business owners, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s minimum wage increase has now become reality, with incremental jumps in hourly pay rising yearly until they eventually hit $15 per hour statewide. The actual schedule for those pay raises varies by both county and company size, but all businesses in the Empire State hiked their minimum pay from $8.75 on December 31st. Business owners in Rockland County will now be paying employees a minimum of $9.70 per hour, a number that will increase by 70 cents each year until the year
70 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 4, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
2020 when the remaining increases to the $15 hourly rate will follow an indexed schedule set by the Director of the Division of Budget in consultation with the Department of Labor. Businesses located in New York City with 11 or more employees will now be paying minimum salaries of $11 per hour, with hourly salaries of $10.50 paid to employees at smaller city businesses. The increase was instituted as part of Cuomo’s effort to restore economic justice to working families in the state. “No one who works full-time should be condemned to a life of poverty, and that’s why New York took action to raise
the wage and provide the opportunity of a decent life to millions of hardworking New Yorkers,” Governor Cuomo said. “As we reach this milestone for a more fair and a more just New York, we are reminding workers they are owed a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work and this administration will work to ensure they receive the wage increase to which they are entitled.” Employees whose salaries are not adjusted according to the new state-mandated schedule can call the Department of Labor hotline at 888-4-NYSDOL to report their employer for non-compliance.

Post-Election News Obama’s Lame Duck Response to Russia On December 29th, the last Thursday of the calendar year, President Obama took an unprecedented step and expelled 35 Russian diplomats based in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, CA as part of a crackdown against Russia for the reported cyberattacks they had launched against the United States. Such a move has not been made by any president since the Cold War was over and is additionally highly unusual in the very last month of a presidential term. In less than three weeks, Donald Trump will be sworn in as president and might very well reverse that order. Russia’s response to the expulsion, not to retaliate by expelling U.S. officials from Russia, shows that they are confident that
he will. Over the course of his administration, Obama’s response to Russian aggression had been, at times, criticized as meek. In addition, it was believed he was willing to look the other way on occasion for Russia’s continued cooperation in other foreign matters such as the Iranian Nuclear Deal and Syrian Civil War. So, the question begs to be asked: What was Obama looking to prove? A move like this seems almost personal against both Putin and Donald Trump, two men who seem to share a mutual
admiration and friendship that has somehow excluded Obama. And it definitely won’t help in bolstering his foreign policy legacy which is already viewed by many to have been, at best, (as Donald Trump would say) weak.

I used to share my room with my younger brother. His snoring really unnerved me. I couldn’t sleep. Then, even his voice started to grate on me. When he spoke or laughed, no matter how loud he was, his voice caused me pain. Even his breathing at night would send shudders through me. Then his eating started bothering me. Chewing, slurping, smacking of lips, even loud swallowing would bother me as if someone had scratched his nails on a blackboard. I tried moving away, eating at a different time, staying away from him — and eventually other eaters as well.

Level 1:
People do not have a significant issue with noise, but may recognize that sometimes there is discomfort.

“I am not comfortable with big gatherings and all the noise.”
Level 2:
There is awareness that a trigger is bothering them and they feel uncomfortable, but not a fightor-flight response. If it is not too much trouble they remove themselves from the situation. “If we are having company, I will find a reason to leave the room if they chew with their mouths open.”
Level 3:
At this level, people find it too difficult to endure the trigger event. They may leave or ask politely for the offending sound to stop. “I’ve learned to just leave the room when my son slurps his ice cream or I can get really angry.”
Level 4:
A person has not had an experience of a fight-or-flight response, yet they may feel tense and angered by the trigger. Attempts of plugging one’s ears, crying or feeling crazy are normal reactions at this point. “This thing is going to drive me insane. I’ve already had multiple panic attacks.”
Level 5:
People report more confrontational coping mechanisms which could feel as panic. Anger, disgust or offense is usually felt towards the trigger maker. “I asked him stop chewing with an open mouth, and he said he wasn’t ,and started to dramatically show me the differences between open and closed mouth chewing. I had to cover my ears and hold myself back from screaming.”

I CAN’T SAY THAT my behavior was pleasant; I was in pain. I would get angry at him, yell, accuse, tease him, rant and rave; I was sure my brother was bothering me purposefully! My whole body would tense, my heart would beat faster. I would be in a state of fight or flight response. I’m a scientist by nature; particularly physics and math, so I did research in trying to define my pain. Only much later did I realize that what I felt was out of the norm. I knew I was suffering from symptoms somewhat like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) where a painful incident is long remembered; the sounds resonated in my head for years. When I was about sixteen, I discovered the disorder called misophonia, which was researched and given a name by Professors Jastreboff PhD, a husband-and-wife team. My family was shocked that I had a real disorder. There is strong evidence indicating that misophonia is neurological, but it remains unclear to what degree nurture has an effect.
Interview with Professo Debbie Hirsch: WHAT IS MISOPHONIA?
Professor Jastreboff: Misophonia is a learned reaction. The repetition affects the sequential part of the brain. Imagine when talking I make this clicking noise with my pen; open, close, open, close, open and close. It is nothing special, a common noise; a normal patient would not react to it. But imagine every time I make this sound for 20 seconds a person receives a 50,000-volt shock; sound, shock, sound, shock for 20 seconds. That person will until the end of his life be jumping out of his skin when he hears the sound of a click of a pen. This is an extreme example of training subjects to hate a sound. That is why a person can hear loud music, laughing and have no effect but the click of a pen will cause pain. The loudness has nothing to do with it. Debbie Hirsch: HOW DID YOU DISCOVER MISOPHONIA?
Pawel J. Jastreboff, PhD, ScD: While my wife, Margaret M. Jastreboff, PhD and I were practicing in our audiology department which specializes in tinnitus and hyperacusis, we found that there were people who had a range of very powerful reactions to just annoyance from patterns of sounds. Basically it was not the physical part of the sound which is similar to hyperacusis, but from the sound which had a specific pattern. It could be a certain voice or an plane flying low close to the ground, clicks of a keyboard, someone drinking. Yet, at the same time, the patient could tolerate other loud sounds. Debbie Hirsch: DID YOU FIND A TREATMENT FOR
MISOPHONIA SUFFERERS? Professor Jastreboff: We published the first journal about misophonia in 2001 and then in 2002 I adapted the TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy) method for misophonia based on four protocols, which we call the “Jastreboff method.” The first three are simple and easy to teach and implement protocols. The fourth, however, is complicated.
Level 6:
I have long pondered the philosophical implications. MISOPHONIA IS ALSO called Elective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome. In either case, the names aptly clarifies its meaning: the hatred of noise. Misophonia is a newly defined disorder, recognized in 2002 and named by Professors Pawel J. Jastreboff, and his wife Margaret M. Jastreboff, who have dedicated their careers to audiology issues. (See sidebar) As of now, there are no statistics regarding the people who suffer from misophonia, due to its novelty. In fact, so little is known about this disorder that research has still not clarified if misophonia stems from the part of the brain that controls the “fight-or-flight sensory reflex” or from the central nervous system. For people with this condition, negative emotions (anger, flight, hatred and irritation) are triggered by specific
or Jastreboff PhD, ScD Sixty-five percent of our patients who came into our clinic for tinnitus had misophonia. Of those that came in with hyperacusis, 60% of them also had misophonia. I teach people what to do so they know what to do when they hear a sound so they don’t have a reaction. Debbie Hirsch: WHEN IS A PERSON MOST LIKELY TO
GET MISOPHONIA? Professor Jastreboff: It starts usually when a child is ten years or older. Yet, there are those who can get it later. One of my patients developed misophonia at age twelve when her grandfather moved into her house. He ate in a very noisy manner. This grated on her in a very heavy way. The parents, who wanted to teach her manners, forced her to sit at the table with her grandfather. She fostered a very negative feeling and soon her reactions extended to everyone. She had problems with her family in the home, and at school. She took care of her needs by not eating with anyone. Now, after treatment, she is fine. Unfortunately, misophonia left untreated will generally get worse with time (based on how long they have had it, not the age of the sufferer). Debbie Hirsch: ARE THERE REGULAR TRIGGERS?
Professor Jastreboff: There are frequent triggers, but anything can become one; it is very personal. The sounds of eating are the usual triggers. Debbie Hirsch: WHAT SHOULD A FAMILY DO IF THEY
THINK SOMEONE HAS THIS ISSUE? Professor Jastreboff: The family should get help because it gets worse with time. It is not connected with age; it can come with any time, since it is connected to a difficult situation that leaves a lasting impression.
People feel physical discomfort. Their muscles become tense or they have other physical reactions, besides the need to either scream, mimic or snap at the source of the offensive noise. They experience a significant fight-or-flight response “I get intense rage, anxiety and panic. I feel tense and nervous.”
Level 7:
At this level people are absorbed by the trigger; they can’t distract themselves. They respond with fight (demand immediate cessation of the noise) or leave abruptly. Sufferers may relive the trigger sound and visual cues days, weeks, months or even years after the event. “I try to focus and concentrate on something else, but it is not possible. I end up covering my ears and yelling.”
Level 8:
All mentioned symptoms are amplified. A person may become verbally abusive, threatening or offensive. “If you get a fork thrown at you, I guess then you’ll stop slurping cereal.”
Level 9:
Very high level of stress is felt by a person at this level. They feel intense hatred of the sound and can either get violent towards the sound (or the person responsible for it) or inflict pain on themselves to force distraction. “Misophonia means constant pain and panic. It means fearing you may hurt somebody on a daily basis.”
Level 10:
People have exhibited violent behavior. They have physically attacked another person, animal or have caused themselves a significant degree of harm. “I sometimes start shaking and hitting myself when the sound keeps happening. I think I am crazy. I can’t help it.” January 4, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 77 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
sounds. The sounds can be loud or soft, but bother the sufferer regardless of volume. At times even the sight of an offending noise being made without the sound (watching someone eat and smacking their lips) can cause pain as the body tenses in anticipation. People who have misophonia become enraged by their specific triggers, which may be slurping, throat-clearing, nail-clipping, chewing, drinking, tooth-brushing, breathing, sniffing, talking, sneezing, yawning, walking, gumchewing or popping, laughing, snoring, swallowing, gulping, typing, coughing, humming, whistling, singing, certain consonants or repetitive sounds. Sufferers experience symptoms such as sweating, muscle tension and quickened heartbeat. They feel real pain. Living with someone who has misophonia also has its challenges, as illustrated by the stories below: “My daughter, Rachel, picks on her brother. A lot. ‘Can’t you eat with your mouth closed?!’ is a constant refrain at the kitchen table,” Rachel’s mother reported. “I never thought too much about it until I heard of misophonia. I think my daughter is on a low-level of discomfort, but it is definitely rough to sit at the table with her as she usually needs to make some sort of comment. I realized it was something more than brother-sister entanglement when she complained about our family’s eating habits. She even admitted to me that when she is with friends she suffers from their smacking of lips as well. Now that we have a name, we don’t get offended with her requests. She has also stopped feeling her brother is making noise to purposely annoy her.” “Sara was diagnosed with misophonia last year. We have been working on behavioral therapy with her since. She can’t stand breathing, chewing (even her own chewing), and general noise. We discovered if we keep her actively engaged in conversation during mealtime she does better. We allowed her to use headphones
78 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 4, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
at the table, but slowly have been weaning her off on days when we are eating“quiet” foods. She has stress balls she can squeeze when feeling overwhelmed. I would suggest people talk about it with their families/friends/co-workers. I also remind her to be patient with others. We try to accommodate Rachel, but she needs to realize that noises are a general way of life and most of us don’t hear them the way she does.” Chana, a mother of young boys, found it difficult to visit her cousin’s family who suffers from misophonia. “When my kids played and laughed loudly my cousin held his ears and asked me to leave with the kids because of his pain. I was trying to feed them at the time and it was hard to leave! We all walk around as if there are eggshells to avoid when he is near, because we don’t want to hit his trigger points. Yet on the other hand, we were in his home and he does need to feel comfortable somewhere. It raises interesting questions...”

As for myself, I have found relief in sound-canceling headphones. I wear them all the time. If a fellow sufferer is unable to get them, normal headphones and relaxing music can work as well. Use them whenever a trigger sound is encountered, otherwise the tension can build. The headphones work because sound is a wave, and the headphones have the perfect anti-wave action to stop the wave of triggering noise. I can hear anything that someone says to me without the many sounds in the background that can throw my misophonia into high gear. Otherwise the only help I can get is to use pain- or anxiety-reducing medicine. I wish I could tell you that I have found a complete cure and my life is all changed, but it is not. Yet possessing the knowledge that I am not alone and there are scientists delving into this disorder gives me hope and validation.

Defense Against Deafening Decibels By Dassy Levy
The human ear can handle a vast range of noise levels, measured in decibels (dB). It can pick up the rustle of leaves, a whispered sentence, ruffling of pages and the even breathing of a newborn. The softest sound a person can hear is measured at zero decibels, a sound level that is almost inaudible. Sadly, 15% of adults lose out on those quiet murmuring sounds that round out our auditory experience of this world full of wonder. The delicate structure of our inner ear, designed to perceive the subtlest of frequencies is sensitive, so sensitive that it can be permanently damaged by the exposure of loud, blaring sounds, noises that make up the babble of everyday life. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is hearing impairment that results from the exposure to loud sound. This manifests itself either as impaired perception of sound, or sensitivity to sound or ringing in the ears.
Eighty-Five Decibels: The Cut-off Line Exposure to sounds 85 decibels and above can be damaging to the ear, with the severity of damage depending on the length of the exposure and the level of the sound. When exposed to prolonged or regular periods of sounds of that level and above, ear protection is a must. As the decibel range goes above 100, damage begins to occur within seconds of exposure, becoming worse with each decibel higher. At 140 decibels, sounds cause immediate damage, and this level of sound should be avoided at all times.

Earplugs or earmuffs are your first line of defense when you’re around machines, cars or live music. If you’re not ready to wear earplugs, the least you can do is to take breaks. Give your ears 10-minute rests to allow it to recover. AT WORK: If you’re experiencing noise at work, talk to your manager about reducing the noise or your exposure to it. Use noise-blocking earmuffs when using machinery 85 decibels or higher. MUSIC: When listening to a personal music player or MP3 player, use headphones instead of earbuds. If the person next to you can hear the music or you can’t hear external sounds, the volume is too high. Turn down the volume on CD players and tape recorders. Even a small reduction in volume can make a big difference. Be careful with the volume in the car, as confined spaces increase the risk of hearing damage.

Without noise-measuring equipment, it’s impossible to tell what dangerous decibel levels you are being exposed to. So follow this rule of thumb when you’re in a noisy environment: If you need to raise your voice so that someone who is at arm’s length away from you should hear you, the noise level may be damaging.
• Rushing, roaring or ringing sensation in your ears after being exposed to loud noise • Ordinary sounds seem muffled or quieter than usual • Sound causes pain in your ears Do this: 1. Rest your ears (no noise above 70 dB for 24 hours). 2. Protect your ear before being exposed to that loud sound again. SOUND BITE: Plugging your fingers into your ears causes a temporary 25-decibel hearing loss. Experience how annoying it is, and be extra careful to protect your hearing.

SOUND BITE: Sound doesn’t work like light or temperature. Your ears don’t “get used to” high noise levels. If certain booming sounds seem to bother you less than they did in the past, it’s not because your ears toughened up; it’s because you lost some of your hearing! This make it all the more critical to protect the hearing you have left. SOUND BITE: Each person differs in his degree of vulnerability and tolerance of noise levels, and what’s okay for one is not okay for all. SOUND BITE: One of the major reasons why industrial insurance premiums for constructions companies are so high is hearing loss, as many workers file claims for it being a direct result from the sounds of the machinery they were exposed to.

Five Tips to Counteract the Chamisha Kolos of Simchas Chosson v’Kallah 1. Wear earbuds if you dare. It’s not like you can hear any better above the din than with ear protectors. 2. If you must stay the whole night, take 10-minute breaks here and there to allow your ears to recover from the loud sounds. 3. Sit or stand as far away from the speaker system as possible. 4. Give yourself a sound detox, avoiding noises above 70 decibels for the next 16-24 hours. 5. When you make a simcha, ask the musician to keep the volume down.

he “other ingredients section is where you will find the nonactive ingredients (excipients) listed, including any binders, fillers, colorings, or solvents. These ingredients are often included to ensure tablet integrity, proper dissolution, or shelf life. It is particularly important to review this part of the label for Kashrus or if you have an allergy (for example, to soy or gluten), but also because some of these ingredients may not be consistent with your values when it comes to artificial ingredients, non-GMO products, and so forth, which are often used in cheaper mass-produced brands. Rarely can you determine whether certain ingredients are from genetically modified sources, without doing research beyond reading the label. While the FDA has worked to make label information clearer as to whether components in food or supplements might be associated with allergies, there are still problems. Following are some of the most commonly used excipients in the industry.
T
Flow Agents are used to help in the manufacturing of tablets and capsules, to prevent ingredients from clumping and caking. Vegetarian sources commonly include silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, and stearic acid. Silicon occurs naturally in foods as silicon dioxide, silica, and silicates. Up to 1,500 mg per day of silicon dioxide added to food supplements is of no safety concern. Manufacturers use far less. Magnesium stearate, a combination of magnesium and stearic acid, is one of the most commonly used excipients and one of the most vilified. Magnesium is an essential mineral, important for your health. Stearic acid is found in many common foods, such as flaxseed oil, walnut oil, olive oil, beef, lamb, and chocolate. Humans regularly consume it in relatively high amounts: A chocolate bar contains roughly 5,000 mg. A supplement typically contains only 20 to 50 mg.
Sun-Thurs: 10:30-6:30 Friday: 10:30-1:00
Binders allow the ingredients in a tablet to stick together and not crumble. Most are vegetarian friendly and none are considered problematic. One of the more common binders is cellulose, or microcrystalline cellulose, which is derived from wood pulp. Guar gum, xanthan gum, and acacia gum, also very common, are all derived from plants.

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program (Rockland County, 845-364-2032) to receive EIP services. EIP is funded by New York State and county governments. All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents. Health insurance may be used for approved services. A child's eligibility for the program can be determined only by state-approved evaluators under contract, and all services must be authorized by the county.

CoAting Agents are used to bind the ingredients and make tablets easier to swallow. Lecithin, made from soy, is often used as a coating agent. Studies show that soy lecithin products can vary considerably in the amount of protein, the part of soy people are allergic to, that they contain. If you have a serious soy allergy, avoid products that list lecithin on the label. Sometimes the label will list vegetable glaze or vegetable coating, which could be derived from corn—a problem for some people and also possibly genetically modified. Modified cellulose, derived from wood pulp, is also used to coat tablets and may be listed as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC).

ACidulAnts To prevent microbes from growing in liquid products and spoiling them, acidulants, such as citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, and aspartic acid, are often used. The only one that might be problematic is aspartic acid, a nonessential amino acid also found in aspartame. While the amount of aspartic acid present in a dietary supplement is very small, some people can be quite sensitive and might experience headaches or stomach discomfort after taking the supplement. glyCerin Often used as a solvent and/or preservative in liquids and to soften the gelatin used in softgels, glycerin can be derived from animals or plants. If the product is not Kosher certified, make sure you check the label to ensure it lists vegetable glycerin. gelAtin Derived from pig or fish, gelatin is a common ingredient in both capsules and softgels. If the label lists gelatin, the supplement contains an animal product. Look for vegetarian or vegan capsules if its not Kosher certified. dyes And PreservAtives Some companies use natural colorings and flavorings in their products. Many cheaper supplements use artificial dyes to color their tablets, capsules, chewables or liquids. There is ongoing debate about the effects of the synthetic FD&C colors on children’s behavior, particularly yellow #5, red #40, or blue #2. These have also been linked to allergy-like reactions and possibly an adverse effect on the immune system. Increasingly, manufacturers are using vegetable dyes instead of synthetics. Some supplements use BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) as an antioxidant and preservative. The Center for Science in the Public Interest puts BHT in its “caution” column, as some research suggests that it might be linked to some illnesses. Granted, the amount you are getting in a once-daily multivitaminmineral tablet would be small compared to what you would get from eating a bag of potato chips preserved with BHT. However, supplements can easily be made without it.

Polysorbate 80, Croscarmellose Sodium, and Polyetheylene Glycol (PEG) Polysorbate 80 is a natural sorbitol used in supplements to help make them more soluble. A 2005 toxicology study showed that it was safe at doses of 10 mg/kg body weight, which is far greater than what would be present in a tablet. Croscarmellose sodium, also known as cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or modified cellulose gum, is an ingredient that helps tablets break down in your stomach. Croscarmellose sodium is classified “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) by the FDA, and after an extensive review of the safety data, the European Commission on Food Safety gave a green light for its safe use in dietary supplements. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), a substance derived from petroleum, is used as a lubricating agent. Ingestion of large amounts have been shown to cause organ damage in animals.

Priorities in a Refrigerator by Culture
By 1963, 99% of U.S. homes had a refrigerator and by 2009, more than a quarter of Americans owned at least two fridges.
Supermarkets are only around thanks to the refrigerator. Without refrigerated trucks, perishables would never make it to your grocer intact.
U.S. AND CANADA
Storage capacity
EUROPEAN COUNTRIES
Energy efficiency and cost of operation
The U.S. has the largest refrigerators in the world, averaging at 17.5 cubic feet of volume. That is because the average American family does their grocery shopping once a week and needs a place to store the perishables acquired on the trip. This is an almost uniquely American habit. The refrigerator door says a lot about a person’s life and personality. From invitations to crayon scrawls to reminders and lists, all secured with magnets depicting the places you’ve visited, the companies whose services you’ve used and the proverbs you believe in, your magnetic bulletin board says it all. What does your refrigerator door say about you?
There are those who prefer a pristine fridge door, but they are a minority. A recent polled that for every person who doesn’t post anything on their refrigerator door, there are 2 or more who do. 90 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 4, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Whirlpool, Samsung and General Electric are the favorite refrigerator brands for U.S. consumers.
The appliance that consumes the most energy is the refrigerator. It runs day and night around the year.
When a refrigerator is not in use, it is important to keep the door ajar. However, make sure that the door is secured open, as it can pose a great suffocation risk for children.
The greatest weight balanced on teeth is 140 pounds and was achieved by Frank Simon (USA) who balanced a refrigerator for 10 seconds on his teeth on May 17, 2007. (Guinness World Records)
After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, hundreds of refrigerators were ruined, even in neighborhoods that were barely affected by the storm. Residents left behind full refrigerators when they fled, and the loss of electricity caused maggots to infest the rotting food inside, damaging the refrigerators. When the government wasn’t doing much about the refrigerators that needed to be disposed of, the enraged residents used them as billboards to write messages of protest. The largest refrigerated warehouse in North America and the largest automated freezer in the world is one of Preferred Freezer Services’ facilities, which dominates the landscape in Richland, Washington. At 455,000 square feet, between 250 and 300 trucks deliver food there daily, and from there products are shipped to grocery distribution centers and restaurants. The second largest freezer in the world may very well be BMG.
“May I photograph the interior of your fridge?” This is a question Mark Menjivar asked people when he traveled around the U.S. working on his three-year project about hunger. He publicized the pictures to bring awareness.
It seems that the warning we always received about “never putting hot food into the fridge” has expired. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that the refrigerator’s thermostat will keep running to maintain a safe temperature of 40° and below. Today, health experts caution that it is a must to place foods in the refrigerator right away. However, a large, steaming pot may not cool off fast enough to keep the food safe, so divide the food into smaller, shallower containers or chill it in an ice water bath beforehand.
High-grade stainless steel isn’t magnetic. Those gleaming new models do not hold a magnet, much to the disappointment of many owners. January 4, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 91 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Real Estate How Pests Affect Your Home WHEN IT GETS COLD OUTSIDE some households experienced strange rustlings in the night. An increasing number of people are waking to the unnerving sound of rodents scratching around their homes. According to a recent study, there is a 31% rise in call-outs for rodent infestations in December compared with November, and a 25% increase on from October as compared to September as the four-legged menaces rush indoors to find shelter from the wintery weather. Does this affect the value of your home? How expensive is pest control and will insurance companies cover damage arising from our free-loading, small, furry uninvited tenants? Pest control is not cheap. There are pest-control companies that charge by the season and others by the visit. But even if you are a do-it-yourselfer, and you purchase traps and poison at your local hardware stores, they also can chew wires and wood. So in addition to pest control there’s the cost of repairing structural damage or replacing damaged furniture, clothes and textiles. Besides the little furry pests, there are the tiny pests: insects. In our area we have to look out for termites, ants, wasps and hornets. When one is a renter, a simple phone call to the landlord usually is the step taken to deal with this pesky issue. As a homeowner, you are responsible to make sure that the problem is dealt with. Some damage from insects can become major if not dealt with. Many years ago, a realtor related a story to me. She went into a house to evaluate the home because the elderly homeowner wanted to sell. As she walked through the home she noticed that it needed a lot of repairs; basically deferred maintenance. When the contractor went through the home to give an estimate, he noticed damage to the wood floor beams. After more checking, it seemed that the home had such a bad case of termite damage that it was actually dangerous to walk on the floors because the beams had been so badly damaged. He recommended demolishing the home and rebuilding

Although many pests can be active all year round, there are certain times when they can be more problematic than others.
it. Termites and carpenter ants can do that to a house if left untreated for years. Will insurance companies pay for the damage caused by these unwanted guests? Every insurance company is different and each homeowner should discuss this with their own insurance company. If a deer was to run into a home and crack a window and do other damage, the insurance company will pay, and if there is a fire due to chewed electrical wires by a mouse, most insurance companies will pay. But what about structural damage from termites or ants or what about clothes that get destroyed because of moths? Although many pests can be active all year round, there are certain times when they can be more problematic than others. April is ant month, while moths can cause grief in May and woodworms in June. Flying ant day is most likely to fall in July, while wasps buzz particularly loudly in August. For rodents, October/November is their time to invade.
How does pest infestation affect the value and the sale ability of a home? I would hope that it is not visible to those making offers but once a home inspection is done, if a pest inspection is ordered, damage and infestation will be found. (These inspections are not required by mortgage lenders usually. Some mortgage programs do require theses inspections, though.) The home seller will have to rectify the problem, treat it and the pest-control

Fully renovated picturesque country style home is a rare find. Located in a most beautiful and desirable neighborhood it uniquely features a LEGAL two-family
company will usually guarantee the work for a year. If there had been structural damage, it would need to be repaired. That could be expensive. If it is not fixed a buyer will either not proceed with the sale or renegotiate the price to cover the treatment and remediation. There will be those buyers who will walk away from the sale though. To keep these unwanted guests out, plug up all holes and cracks around your home. Don’t make it easy for rodents to enter your home. Don’t neglect the attic. Seal up all cracks and holes in the attics so fly-
ing rodents don’t make your attic a home for themselves either. It’s more difficult with insects. Be visual. Termites and carpenter ants need wood and moisture. By eliminating dry rotting wood and moisture in and around one’s home, one may be able to prevent the infestation. But no matter how vigilant one is, it may be unpreventable. In that case, early detection is the key to minimizing the impact and damage to your home. Always have the telephone number of a competent pest control in your rolodex! And don’t forget Jewish 411!
