DOES HE REALLY HAVE TO TOUCH EVERYTHING? TIME TO TOUCH BASE WITH KIDS FIRST

If your child has the need to be overly hands-on with everything within reach, your child may have a sensory issue. Other kids may have the opposite reaction to sensory stimuli and recoil from certain textures, noises or visual cues. Kids with sensory issues can have a hard time in school and relationships due to either overor under-stimulation, causing them to feel uncomfortable and unhappy. They might be impulsive, disorganized and have difficulty following instructions. They might even seem disconnected from the world around them. Kids First Occupational Therapists are specialists in getting to the root of your child’s sensory and general processing issues, helping your child process the world in a manner that will set your child up for success.

I’ve been giving my kids as you instructed. It appears the never ending cycle of strep has finally come to an end!

I came to you for help with my Osteoporosis. I followed your regimen for several months until my next bone density test. My bones are completely restored. I never thought this was possible!”

My son was scheduled for ear tubes. I followed your recommendation… the ENT cancelled the procedure!”

RE: THAT NERVE-WRACKING NOISE In your article about Misophonia, the author didn’t mention a possible correlation with autism, rather just tinnitus etc., and it’s a fact that some autistics can hear “humming” from fluorescent lights, while others, such as Georgie Stehli, have been known to feel acute pain when hearing certain sounds. In her case it was the drip-drip of water even far away! (In the Stehli case, approximately 30 years ago, they traveled to Switzerland, where she underwent auditory training with an expert in the field. A Reader

RE: A MOTHER IN PAIN I am writing this letter in response to “A Mother in Pain.” It is true that Tomchei Shabbos is a lifesaving organization that literally puts food on people’s tables so that they shouldn’t go to bed hungry. Their zchus is indescribable. I was disturbed by the fact that your children have one pair of clothing and your baby has one pair of summer pajamas. We live in a society that does so much chesed for one another and there are a plethora of organizations who are here to help (if found eligible). I urge you to reach out to them and to other organizations to see how they can possibly help you and your family. Some of these services are: free or highly discounted clothing (Tomche Shabbos & Kupath Ezrah), monthly tuition and/or electric bill payments (Kupath Ezrah), small payments to your grocery bill (Eizer Lamuzen), financial counseling (Mesilah). You mentioned that your husband is working. If your husband is earning the bare minimum, Tomche Shabbos and Kupath Ezrah have job training and job finding programs that might help your husband increase his job opportunities and income. All this is aside from the fact that there are government programs such as Food Stamps, WIC and Temporary Assistance that can help alleviate some of your financial burden. Additionally, there are local people who do amazing acts of chesed

on a smaller scale which I cannot publicize. For example, there’s someone who has a collection of shoes from the previous season which she gives away for free. I can be contacted through The Monsey View. Hatzlacha, A Community Askan

Dear Mother in Pain, It was painful and also enlightening to read your letter. Painful at what you are going through and it also fostered appreciation to know that my situation could be worse than what it is right now. We are also a family with an income, but not enough to cover basic bills, so clothing and everything else has no way of being paid for. However, $30-50 a season is still doable for us and we shop at Kupath Ezra’s Nearly New Shop. Sometimes it is out-of-style clothes, but many times it is very designer clothes that my kids wear. At $1 for most items it is really no excuse for children not to have clothing. I am sure you don’t know about this amazing “store.” If you do happen to know about it and still are unable to afford those prices, I beg you to call Kupath Ezra and ask them if they can give you a voucher at the store. Sincerely, A Fellow Mother Who Understands This Nisayon

RE: THE TRUTH ABOUT KOLLEL LIFE I would like to commend the Kollel wives for their beautiful portrayal of a life dedicated to Torah. I would also like to add that this is not a case of “husbands against wives.” The wife of a kollel yungerman has chosen this lifestyle just like her husband. It’s a mutual decision that is reached between husband and wife, and their parents or acquaintances need not pity the wife for the beautiful life she has willingly chosen. They are in no way victims, and they carry their banner with pride. Another point I would like to bring across is that we live in a society so rich in maasim tovim. The chesed that we witness in our community is outstanding. The bikur cholim and the lengths people take to help others in need are inspiring. The kibud av v’em, the dedication, the hachnosas orchim and open homes, the tzedaka people generously donate to hachnoses kallah, the harbingers of shalom… our zchusim are endless. Mi K’amcha Yisroel? And yet it says “V’talmud Torah K’neged Kulom” - Torah study is equivalent to all of those mitzvos! Let’s not forget to respect that. Respectfully A Machshuv Torah

I WAS STARTING to plan the bar mitzvah of my second son. At my oldest son’s bar mitzvah a year prior, the hall I wanted was already taken by the time I had called to reserve it. This time I decided to call and see if they would let me reserve the date a year in advance. They agreed to accept my reservation as long as I put down a deposit. I proceeded to do that, happy that I was able to get a nice hall that was within my budget. Two months later, I went to a simcha in the hall I had reserved, together with a neighbor, to wish mazel tov to the baalas simcha. While we were there, I mentioned to my neighbor what I’d booked it a year in advance. She thought it was a great idea and the next day she called up to see about reserving her son’s bar mitzvah date for the following year. When she received the information about the hall and its pricing, she called me up asking why I had said the hall was reasonably priced and read to me what was written on the contract regarding the cost per couple. I pulled out my contract with them and saw that I had gotten the price for $4 cheaper per couple. I thanked Hashem for the tovah He did for me, putting the idea into my head and letting me book the hall before the price went up.

Session 10

A Yeshiva Life of Torah and Health By: Basya Kovacs, Nutrition Counselor

SINCE WE STARTED this column almost two months ago we have been inundated with questions from teenage boys, as well as their parents, who are trying to make changes in their eating habits. As many teens have similar questions, we have chosen a few to share with our readers. Here are some of the common questions, along with the answers we gave. Q. I DON’T REALLY LIKE VEGETABLES. DO I NEED TO EAT VEGETABLES IN ORDER TO LOSE WEIGHT? A. Good question! Everyone knows that vegetables have essential vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy and strong, so the question being asked is if they are essential for weight loss, and not just general health. While we do have some clients that simply refuse to eat any vegetables, we have found that the only way to really feel full on a balanced eating plan is by incorporating vegetables into your diet. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, just something that will help you

feel full. Some easy, bring-along, no-prep ideas: Baby carrots Cherry tomatoes Cut peppers Baby corn Vegetable soup Mini kirby cucumbers Even sour pickles or sugar-free cucumber salad can count as a vegetable, as the goal is to bulk up your meal so you are left feeling satisfied. Aside from keeping you full, vegetables can help keep your metabolism up between meals, so you ultimately burn more calories throughout the day. Q. DO I REALLY NEED TO EXERCISE IN ORDER TO LOSE WEIGHT? A. Once again, I’ll address this as a question about weight loss as opposed to overall health, because, of course, weight loss is important for your health, wellbeing, mood and even your brain function and memory! However, in terms of weight loss, exercise can be tricky.

THE BALANCING BOCHUR: Sruli Englander* Height: 5'8 | Starting weight: 180 pounds Current weight: 167.75 pounds | Weight lost this week: 2.25 pounds I was so happy that I lost two pounds over Chanukah that it motivated me to be very careful with my food plan. I actually got a food scale and those disposable plastic measuring cups so that I can make sure that my portion sizes are right, especially dinner time, where I have a feeling I might be eating too much. Mrs. Kovacs told me that if I am hungry at the end of dinner it is probably because I didn’t have enough vegetables, so I am going to make sure to have a vegetable soup and a salad along with my dinner.

Although the caloric burn can help speed up the weight-loss process, people often attribute exercise much more than it’s actually worth. Exercising often mistakenly gives people license to eat poorly, because they figure they are going to burn off the extra calories anyway during their workout. This is far from reality! Actually, if you aren’t careful, exercise can have the opposite of its intended effect, meaning it can leave you so hungry (and so sure that you burned loads of calories) that you end up eating more than you would have had you not exercised. This is not to say that you shouldn’t exercise; it is just important not to depend on it for your weight-loss goals and to be extra careful when exercising not to allow yourself extra, unplanned food because of it. Q. IS IT BETTER TO EAT WHOLE WHEAT CHALLAH THAN REGULAR CHALLAH, IN ORDER TO LOSE WEIGHT? A. Another tricky question, again without an easy answer. Our general guideline is to always choose whole grain over regular. This is for two reasons. Refined (white) grains are stripped of the parts of the grain that keep you full, so eating a cup of brown rice will keep you much more full and satisfied as opposed to white rice. Additionally, refined grains are stripped of important vitamins and minerals, so whole grains are healthier than refined white grains regardless of whether or not you are trying to lose weight.

CUSTOM DESIGN

on sale!

However, sometimes things that sound healthy end up sabotaging us! Calorie-wise, whole wheat and non-whole wheat flours are about equal, but think about how much more likely we are to overeat on whole wheat challah, because we feel it is healthier! It is so common for people on weight-loss plans to eat a few extra slices of challah on Shabbos, and convince themselves that it is okay because it is whole wheat. So again, whole grains are better for you and keep you full longer, but in terms of calories, are very much similar to white bread. Don’t allow the words “whole wheat” trick you into eating extra! Q. I KNOW I AM SUPPOSED TO HAVE A SNACK IN BETWEEN EACH MEAL. IS THE BEST OPTION A FRUIT? A. As you see by now, we don’t do many yes or no questions and the answer to this one is: not necessarily. Although fruit can be a super choice for a snack because it is loaded with vitamins and minerals, and lower in calories than most of the recommended snack options, it is not always the best choice. We believe that snacks have to meet several requirements. It should not have too much fat or too many calories or be very high in sugar. It must have some fiber and/or protein in order to hold you for several hours until your next meal. It needs to be something you enjoy or at least look forward to, so that you don’t feel deprived on your food plan. While a fruit can, at times, meet all these requirements, you need to keep in mind your appetite, your environment and your personality. If you come home starved and stressed at 5:00 pm, an apple or grapefruit just might not cut it! You might need to allow yourself a healthy protein bar, or a low-fat, lowercalorie muffin, so that you don’t end up feeling deprived and eating half the snack cabinet! You need to know your specific circumstances in order to judge whether a fruit is the right snack choice for you. Please keep in mind that the answers above were posed by teens asking specifically about speeding up their weight-loss process, and not asked in the context of their overall health. If you have health or weight-loss questions you would like to see answered in this column please text your questions to 347-938-9113.

Flu Season Prompts Nyack Hospital to Limit Visitors (The Journal News) A LATE DECEMBER report issued by the New York State Department of Health announcing that flu is prevalent in the state has officials at Nyack Hospital instituting new policies to prevent patients and staffers from becoming exposed to the virus. As of this week, all visitors to Nyack Hospital will be encouraged to don surgical masks and to use hand sanitizer, both of which will be available at entrances to the facility. Children under age 13 will only be permitted to visit the hospital’s Maternity Center if they are not sick. In the remainder of the hospital, visitation will be limited to two

healthy visitors at a time, ages 13 and up, with children under 13 allowed only under special circumstances. As of the beginning of December, 132 cases of the flu have been reported in Rockland County. The county’s health commissioner is urging anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated to get their flu shot immediately.

Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant to Close in 2021? (The Journal News) AFTER YEARS OF expressing concern about the safety of the Indian Point nuclear power plant located just across the Hudson River in the Westchester town of Buchanan, Governor Andrew Cuomo has suggested that an agreement to close the plant is about to become a done deal. According to Cuomo spokesperson

Rich Azzopardi, no official agreement has been signed just yet but it appears as if that may change shortly. A report that appeared in the New York Times suggested that an agreement could be signed any day. The Indian Point power plant opened in the 1970s and supplies about a quarter

of the electricity used in New York City and Westchester. Whether or not electric rates would rise remains to be seen, but the governor has said for years that the plant’s close proximity to so many highly populated areas, including New York City, could create a massive public safety hazard in the event of an accident.

Police Car Gets Stuck to Stolen Truck as Bizarre Chase Ends in Ramapo (NorthJersey.com) A FIFTY-MILE CHASE involving numerous divisions of law enforcement finally came to an end last week on Route 59 as the driver of a stolen tow truck was headed off by police.

Police said that Paul Gudanowski stole a flatbed truck from Brookside Auto Body and Towing in Hackensack and drove it to Manhattan before returning to New Jersey where the missing vehicle was spotted by police. Gudanowski, who

60 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 11, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

has several prior arrests, led police on a chase on Route 17, heading north on the New York State Thruway all the way to the Harriman exit, near Woodbury Commons, before making an illegal uturn and driving south on the Thruway. Gudanowski left the Thruway and headed onto Route 59 where one of the police cars that had been following the tow truck became wedged under the rear of the vehicle. Both the police cruis-

er and the officer inside the car were then dragged along by the tow truck before it was finally stopped by police. Numerous police agencies, including both the Ramapo and Suffern Police Departments assisted in the 43-minute chase which ended with Gudanowski being charged with multiple violations. Two state troopers were lightly injured in the chase, which also damaged several police cruisers.

CHAPTER 23

Sun on

Stone Recap: Gella gets more nervous as the party is almost ready to begin. Pessy suggests Malka’la as a shidduch for Gella’s son. THEY BOTH SAT into the car, Malka’la a strip of sunshine, Gella the stormcloud from which she shone through. “I want to thank you so much for doing this. I know you’ve worked so hard for me and you’ve brought in your friends to help. It means so much to me.” “Thank me later,” Gella said. She relented. “Actually, it’s okay. It’s my pleasure.” “I’m looking forward. It’s the last night before I’m going home. It’s the neilah time. This is the time

the lights were on outside Pessy’s house, the lawn abloom with people streaming in. The house looked so festive, the lawn expansive enough to hold all the voices of women congregating together. “They are coming,” Gella said, her hands wringing in excitement. “Yes,” Malka’la breathed. They headed up to the house. A communal murmur was rising from among the people, women admiring the runners, the fruit platters. Gella had to hand it to herself and her friends. They had

Malka’la’s eyes traipsing around the room, picking up reticent women, coaxing them with her eyes, her energy expended into the voice, the thrust, the heart of the song. to poiel ois, to beseech the Bashefer for the big breakthrough.” Gella turned around sharply from where she was looking out at the road, and faced Malka’la. “Aren’t you nervous? You’re the one speaking tonight. You need to impress all these people. Doesn’t that… make you afraid?” And they were there already; all

64 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 11, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

really outdone themselves with the most eye-popping décor. And in such a short time. The tin money bank was doing quick business, Malka Baila greeting each person before collecting their alms. “This is it,” Gella breathed, her nerves turning into something else, a sort of festive breath, a dance, a giddy smile. She squeezed

Malka’la’s hands. Malka’la turned to Gella and gave her a peck on each cheek. “Thank you. Thank you.” Gella didn’t answer, but her eyes did. Most people filed in. The tables filled. Gella wondered briefly if there was enough room. “I’ve set up another few straight tables in the living room,” Pessy whispered. She walked to the microphone at the corner of the room. Pessy thanked them all for coming. “I want to express my admiration for a woman who will always go above and beyond herself for others,” Pessy said. Gella suddenly realized Pessy was talking about her, even though she wasn’t talking about the real Gella, the person who just couldn’t live with other people’s faults. Pessy kept talking. Gella wanted to hide in the kitchen, busy herself with an oven mitt, but she realized it would be way classier for her to just sit it out. Pessy segued into a d’var Torah and Gella breathed a too-loud sigh. “And here is a wonderful woman, a light from Yerushalayim, the light of the world — and we now have the privilege to hear some words of chizuk from her.”

Maybe Gella had gone out on a limb for her guest. Maybe she was still generous, even though her heart balked like a tantruming kid’s when it came to giving when to her it didn’t feel right. Gella felt her insides going anxious again, as Malka’la, next to her, stood up with a ramrod back and walked up to the microphone. Gella tried swallowing over the rock in her throat, and gave Malka’la a tight smile. “Women of the world,” Malka’la whispered into the mike, looking around at the crowd. I have no idea what that means, Gella thought. The women looked back, searching the pupils of Malka’la’s eyes. “I’m going to sing a song for you. After the first stanza, you’ll know it, and you’ll sing along with me.” Malka’la closed her beautiful eyes, the mike merely centimeters from her lips. The crowd shifted, a communal rearrangement on their seats. Some people picked at the crumbs on their plates, others took another forkful but were too shy to swallow. I’m getting out of here, Gella thought urgently. “Ana…” Malka’la started, her voice not faltering, “ana avda d’Kudsha barich Hu” “Ana avda…” the tension in the room was melting, slightly, people relaxing their edges. “…d’Kudsha barich Hu. Ant Hu zun l’cholah…” Her voice grew strong, determined, clinging to the words, until every woman could feel, know, the meaning of the words in her very being. “U’mefarnes l’cholah… ant Hu shalit…” Two women were humming along. Malka’la looked at each woman, paused, inviting each, with a look, to join in her song. She sang the words again,

her song gaining strength as her audience did. The second round had Malka’la’s eyes traipsing around the room, picking up reticent women, coaxing them with her eyes, her energy expended into the voice, the thrust, the heart of the song. She was tapping her feet, swaying her hands like a bird. The women around her were singing, Gella noted, even Malka Baila, everyone. Malka’la smiled at her, square in the eye. She launched into the song again. Her brows were low but her eyes were wide, her smile welcoming each woman into the song, and its message. “Ana…” “I came to America, because I couldn’t feed my children,” Malka’la said, holding out her hands to quiet the women who, after being coaxed into the experience they hadn’t prepared for and were not used to, were winding down by exclaiming to each

Gella sat back down. “And to get weak. And have someone care for me. Mrs. Kahn really cared for me. Like I needed. A matana. Straight from the Aibishter.” Her words were drowned out by loud, persistent applause. Gella wondered where to look, finally settling her gaze on Malka’la’s rose-infused face and the scotch tape holding her glasses together. “And I realized, from the moment my husband, alav hashalom,

“Don’t say it,” Gella urgently mouthed to Malka’la, who was looking over her head, toward the back of the room, thinking out loud, too loud. other in judgment over how good Malka’la was, how irresistible, how talented. “And the truth is, now that a month has passed since I last saw my Srulik, Moshe, Perela, Aharon, Rechy, little Esther’ka, and I’ve been in the loving care of a wonderful, generous woman—” The room filled with applause. Gella tried not to blush, even as she felt her face flush in a dizzying instant. “Yes. I’ve been in the home of Mrs. Kahn—” Another round of applause. Gella stood up impulsively. “Thank you,” she said. “And I’ve had time to think.”

passed into the Other World, I had never had the time… to think about it. To cry.” A long pause. “It’s good to cry.” That respectful silence again. A woman was resting her chin on her palm, staring off in the distance. Other women had pursed lips, their heads hanging to one side. “Imo anochi b’tzara…” Malka’la sang in a low voice. The tune was familiar. She sang it again, her voice gaining strength. She motioned to the crowd. They hummed along, then sang along, the entire house filling up and vibrating with the sound. “We all have something,”

Malka’la continued, and the women leaned forward to catch every word. “Something so raw we don’t even want to lean into it, to feel it. We want to run away. I didn’t know that I came here to run. I didn’t know. All I knew was, I couldn’t feed my children. It was getting worse and worse. Their soles were trod down to nothing, their toes scraping the floor. They were always hungry. I was working hard from morning to night, I wasn’t listening to myself. My soul was saying, ‘Slow down. Cry. Now is the time to cry.’ “But we don’t always listen to the neshamah’s gentle prodding; it’s like a whisper. Funny, how we always end up listening anyway. We are led. We are always led to where we need to go. Because I came all the way to America to confront my loss, to sit in the pain, the loneliness, the helplessness of being left a mother alone, an almanah. And I understood that the money was just an excuse to—” “Don’t say it,” Gella urgently mouthed to Malka’la, who was looking over her head, toward the back of the room, thinking out loud, too loud. CARAMEL WHITE HOT CHOCOLATE For those of you who don’t agree with cocoa or the mess it creates, this white version not only passes muster, but is in a class of its own as far as hot drinks are concerned. Feel free to decrease or entirely skip the caramel if you don’t go for that flavor. Serves 4

INGREDIENTS: 4 cups half-and-half (can be substituted with full-fat milk) 1 scoop vanilla sugar 8 oz. white dairy chocolate, chopped into small pieces 2 T. dairy caramel cream

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the first three ingredients into a medium saucepan. 2. Cook over medium to low heat, stirring occasionally, until it comes to a slight simmer. Do not allow it to come to a full boil. 3. Remove from heat and swirl in the caramel cream, or squirt onto walls of the mug. Serve immediately.

S’MORES HOT CHOCOLATE Cozy and divine, this is a winning treat on a cold day! (Your kids will thank you.) If you have a crème brûlée torch, you can skip steps 2 and 4 and simply use it to char your marshmallow once they’re in the mug. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS: 4 cups whole milk 8 oz. chocolate (dairy or pareve) 2 crushed graham crackers 12 large marshmallows

DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare 4 mugs. Chop 2 oz. chocolate in each mug. 2. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and lay out marshmallows on it. 3. Place 4 cups milk in a saucepan. Cook over low to medium heat, until it simmers, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and distribute among the four mugs. 4. Place the marshmallows into the oven on low broil. Watch it and remove as soon as top starts to brown. 5. Stir the contents of the mugs to mix the now melted chocolate and milk. 6. Dust each mug with crushed graham crackers and top with roasted marshmallows. 7. Serve immediately. SEASONED CHEF: To achieve the look in the photo, prepare some melted butter in a plate, and the crushed graham crackers from the recipe in another plate. Turn your mug upside down and dip the rim first in the melted butter and then in the crushed graham crackers.

MOCHA-FLAVORED AFFOGATO Affogato, literally translated as “drowned” in Italian, is a coffee-based dessert that takes the form of a scoop of ice cream or gelato that is “drowned” in a shot of hot espresso. In this recipe, cocoa and vanilla merge with coffee and ice cream for an irresistible winter treat. Dairy ice cream will obviously have the richest flavor, but with non-dairy ice cream, it’s an excellent boost for after a fleishig meal and allows those who are off milk to have their coffee and drink it too. Serves 4

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups water 2 T. cocoa 1 T. ground coffee 1 T. vanilla sugar 4 generous scoops ice cream or gelato

DIRECTIONS: 1. Put cocoa, coffee and vanilla in a large pitcher or 20 oz. cup. Add the hot water and stir. 2. Place a scoop of ice cream in each of four small mugs. 3. Pour about ½ cup of coffee onto each scoop. Serve immediately.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place water and cranberries in a large pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for ½ hour. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients, cover and steep for one hour. 3. Pour the tea through a sieve to remove the cranberries, cloves and cinnamon.

SAMe

S

AMe short for S-adenosyl-l-methionine, is a naturally occurring compound in the body made from the amino acid methionine. SAMe is present in every cell of our body and is required for a whole host of activities, particularly when it comes to brain, liver, and joint health. SAMe was first identified in 1952 and since then has been studied for the treatment of depression, osteoarthritis, and liver disease. SAMe has been available as a prescription drug in some European countries for more than 35 years. It is sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and is one nutraceutical that has the potential to improve quality of life for many. SAMe is necessary for the production of the neurotransmitters: dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and melatonin, which help us maintain a healthy mood, experience pleasure, and regulate our sleep-wake cycle. SAMe has been studied for the treatment of depression for decades, a condition for which it has been used in Europe for more than 30 years. SAMe readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, ensuring that it can increase brain levels of neurotransmitters. Studies have found that SAMe supplements are superior to placebo and equally as effective as prescription antidepressant medications in the treatment of depression. A 2011 review published in the prestigious journal Rheumatology found consistent evidence for the effectiveness of SAMe in the treatment of osteoarthritis, an all-toocommon pain condition in the U.S. Research shows that when used over the course of eight weeks, SAMe supplements provide the same pain relief as such drugs as celecoxib (Celebrex) and indomethacin. While SAMe reduces pain and improves function quickly, it is still important to take

glucosamine and chondroitin to maintain the integrity of the joints over the long haul. Some people with fibromyalgia have experienced less pain, fatigue, and depression when taking SAMe. Abdominal pain is common in children. When it is ongoing and tests and investigations are unable to find a source for the pain, it is called functional abdominal pain. Functional abdominal pain is one of the most common reasons children and teens are seen by GI doctors. Tricyclic antidepressants are generally used to treat the condition, but these medications have many side effects. Pediatricians at the University of California, San Diego, postulated that SAMe might be effective for this condition due to its dual effects as an antidepressant and pain reliever. They undertook a small pilot trial where teens (average age: 14) were started on 200 mg per day of SAMe, increasing the dose up to 1,400 mg if needed over the two-month study. The results were published in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine in 2013. The teens took an average of 1,400 mg per day and reported an improvement in pain. SAMe was well tolerated and no adverse effects were noted. The bulk of SAMe is produced in the liver where it has many important roles, including the synthesis of the powerful antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione is critically important for eliminating toxins from the body, preventing damage to our DNA, and keeping our mitochondrial powerhouses functioning properly. If the liver is stressed, whether from alcohol, drugs, environmental toxins, or poor diet, SAMe levels fall and so does glutathione, making it more difficult for the liver to do its job. It is a vicious cycle. Early research suggests SAMe may help slow the progression of liver disease. And while we need clinical trials to truly understand the role SAMe might play in liver health, it can certainly be considered when thinking about an integrative treatment strategy. Always start low and go slow. start with 200 mg twice a day, early in the morning and in the afternoon, for three or four days and then increase by 200 mg every three days until they are at 1,000 to 1,200 mg per day. People over the age of 65 often get relief with just 400 to 600 mg per day. SAMe must be enteric-coated to prevent its destruction by stomach acid. Don’t cut your SAMe pills in half or you’ll destroy the coating. It can be expensive, but it is effective. It’s best to take SAMe on an empty stomach, but if it causes stomach upset, take it with food. SAMe works closely with folate and vitamins B2, B6, and B12, and a deficiency in any of these vitamins can lower SAMe levels, making us more vulnerable to impaired cognition, depressed mood, and poor sleep. This is why it is very important to take SAMe along with your multivitamin or Bcomplex to ensure it has the right partners to do its job. Do not take SAMe while taking prescription medications, such as tramadol (Ultram), meperidine (Demerol), or pentazocine (Talwin), dextromethorphan (cough syrups, such as Robitussin DM) and levodopa.

“My shvigger kept the house really cold when my husband was growing up. Really cold. At night, the thermostat was set at 59°. Baruch Hashem, all of the kids grew up healthy and well. We’d like to attribute their health — at least partially — to the low temperature.” Perpetuating the family tradition of intentionally chilly nights, Mr. Stein* is also raising his children in a frigid nighttime environment. “It’s just so much better for health,” says Mrs. Stein*. “But it’s definitely hard to get used to. And in the mornings before the temperature rises, it’s hard as well, so I try to set the timer to warm up the house as my bochurim are starting their day.” If you’re like most Americans, you may be questioning the wisdom of sleeping in a frigid environment, wondering why anyone would actually choose to be chilled in this wonderful era of indoor heating. Over in Arcticregion countries such as Norway and Iceland, though, cold sleeping is the norm — especially for children. From the tender age of two weeks old, infants are bundled in multiple clothing layers, balaclavas (ski masks), buntings and blankets — and purposely left outdoors for napping. The ideal temperature for slumbering outdoors is deemed to be -5°C (23°F), though parents can be found tucking their wee ones into strollers for a bit of cold-weather shut-eye even in temperatures reaching -30°C (-22°F). “There’s no such thing as bad weather,” goes the Swedish proverb, “only bad clothing.” THE BENEFITS OF FRIGID weather exposure in children are apparently multifold. Most obvious being that children in daycare programs spend time in the fresh outdoor air as opposed to being constantly in closed rooms with other infants and toddlers — and any germs they

may be carrying. To this end, some Scandinavian daycare centers even offer programs in which toddlers spend their entire day outdoors, save for lunch and short indoor breaks. According to some studies, these children miss less days of daycare due to illness than children who spend most

of their time indoors. Others studies, though, indicate little difference. What is known for a fact, however, is that infants who nap outdoors typically have longer sleep cycles, with naps ranging from 1.5 hours to 3 hours, instead of the common 1–2 hours common amongst indoor nappers. It is theorized that the heavy layers worn by these children comfortably swaddle them, preventing startling and subsequent waking. But is there a more scientific reason to the deep sleep of the tundra tots?

EFFECTS OF COLD ON SLEEP There are multiple reasons to lower the thermostat or head outdoors into the chilly winter air before giving in to slumber.

Quicker, Deeper Sleep According to a study conducted by the UniSA Centre for Sleep Research in Australia, two types of insomnia can largely be prevented by lowering a room’s temperature.

For those with difficulty falling asleep, as well as those with trouble staying asleep, cold sleeping may prove the answer. In non-insomniacs, the core temperature of the human body slowly begins to drop in preparation for sleep during the evening hours. Many insomniacs, however, were found to have thermo-regulatory difficulties that prevented their bodies from naturally cooling off. Though the internal temperature differs between non-insomniacs and some insomniacs by only one (or even half of a) degree, the effects of that subtle difference seems to drastically impact many lives. By simply lowering their heating to within the ideal zone of between 60–67°, many insomniacs report bodily cooling and subsequent quicker, deeper sleep.

WHEN COLD CURES Beyond the relatively mild practice of sleeping in a low-temperature environment, the use of cold as a medicinal agent is popular in many areas of the world. Extreme exposures to cold for snippets of time are the norm in some locales, based upon the belief that short spurts of agents which would otherwise harm the body — such as abnormally high or low temperatures — can actually cause the body to heal itself. Called hormesis, this theory remains controversial. Please don’t try any of these methods at home!

Hyperbaric Gaseous Cryotherapy Developed in 1993, the NeuroCryoStimulation device first made its appearance on the medical scene to relieve pain by using blasts of carbon dioxide applied directly to the skin at a shocking temperature of -109°. Pain is touted to be relieved in under a minute, though skin may be burned in the process…

Cryosurgery Quite commonly used as a treatment for warts, moles and skin tags, liquid nitrogen is used in western medicine to freeze skin blemishes from the body.

Whole Body Cryotherapy Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) involves exposing individuals to abnormally low temperatures of below -148° inside of a specially made chamber, for a length of two to four minutes. WBC is touted to help with a variety of ailments, running the gamut from aches and pains to multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. WBC chambers are not approved by the FDA, though many individuals claim that WBC truly helps their conditions. There are also Partial Body Cryotherapy machines that target specific areas of the body.

Polar Bear Plunges Believing quick dips in freezing water to be good for the immune system leads thousands of people to jump into icy winter waters every year. In 2007 the world record for longest time in the coldest water was set by a man who swam for 18 minutes and 50 seconds in -29° water… at the North Pole! Describing the experience as excruciating, he admits that the swim was the hardest thing he’s ever done. By the time he emerged, he showed clear signs of crises. Most people would not have lasted as long as he did. Likewise, a woman from Finland set the record of swimming under ice without any diving gear, for a record of 164 feet in -24°. Though undoubtedly brave (and arguably foolish!), these polar swimmers can’t compare when it comes to Yidden of times gone past… By far the most heroic cold water dips were the ones taken by Yidden who were moser nefesh to tovel in frigid waters for the benefit of more than just the body; they toveled for benefit of the everlasting neshama.

In a perfect world, a snow day would find us at home in fuzzy slippers, sipping hot chocolate while taking in the white winter wonderland from the cozy confines of our living room couches. But in real life, sometimes the harsh weather conditions are unavoidable, and some of us have no choice but to wrap up warmly, prepare the car and venture out in the snow, to get to work or to the myriad other places that make up the pattern of everyday life.

FULLY CHARGED MOBILE PHONE for if your drive takes way longer than expected

In any hazardous weather, refrain from going out if it’s not a must, but when there’s no way around driving in the snow, take every precaution to drive safely.

FIRST-AID KIT SAND, GRIT OR CAT LITTER to provide traction on slippery surfaces. Sprinkling them around your car may help get your set of wheels out of a snow bank.

TIRES You want those wheels to go round and round and have traction on the slippery roads. Tires that are worn or have low air pressure will not do the job. Your tires should have at least 6/32 tread. Although most all-weather tires can handle the snow, switching to snow tires is always a good idea in areas that see a lot of the white winter stuff.

BATTERY POWER WINDSHIELD WASH

ANTIFREEZE FLUID LEVEL Coolant will prevent water from freezing and protects your engine from overheating and other damage. Check the antifreeze every few weeks.

Before winter, and before venturing out in the snow, make sure these objects are stowed away in your car.

SHOVEL

in the case of a surprise snow shower while you’re at work, and for in the event that your car gets stuck en route

ICE SCRAPER

STUCK CARS

INCLINES

If there’s a car that’s stuck or can’t get up the hill, please get out, take your shovel out of the trunk and help!

Avoid hills as much as possible, but when there’s no choice, build up speed before getting to the incline and then cruise up the hill without accelerating, as that can increase chances of slipping or skidding.

May Hashem protect us wherever we may be.

FULL TANK OF FUEL so that the car can be kept warm in case you’re stuck.

GLYCERIN This deicing agent is available in hardware stores that can be applied to frozen locks. Keep one in your glove compartment, but also in your garage and on your desk at work. Warm water, when available, also does the job.

TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS The law requires that you use your headlights whenever you need to use your windshield wipers to clear rain, snow or sleet.

CLEAR THE SNOW OFF YOUR CAR. Legally the windows must be clean before setting out and the license plate must be visible. While you won’t be fined for this, the roof should be snowfree as the snow can slip onto the windshield middrive, completely obscuring your view of the road.

WEAR SUNGLASSES Snow reflects almost 80% of the sun’s rays, making driving difficult, and also increasing the likelihood of harmful rays being directed to your eyes, which may cause damage.

WARM CLOTHING AND BLANKET just in case you get stuck in a snowy standstill

DON’T LET YOUR 4-WHEEL DRIVE GIVE YOU A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY. Four-wheel drive gives you added traction on snowy roads, but care must still be taken, because though it helps in harsh weather, it is not invincible. Avoid speeding and short stops.

DON’T PANIC If you feel your tires begin to skid, you instinctively may want to slam the brake pedal. Don’t do that! Moving tires have some traction, and by stopping them, you’re removing all traction. Rather, slowly ease off of the accelerator and allow your car to slow down on its own.

FLASHLIGHT DON’T DRIVE TOO CLOSELY TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU. In slippery conditions, keep as far away from the car in front of you as possible. Double, or even triple the normal distance, so if you have to brake and it’s slippery, you have the extra time to come to a stop.

DON’T RUSH Driving slowly is a must in any difficult weather. It gives you more control and more time to stop and slow when needed, and it makes the roads so much safer. Accelerate very slowly, and don’t switch lanes, unless you must.

DISTRACTIONS Keep the music down and stay attuned for any slipping.

What’s the magical word to get the deepest of sleepers out of dreamland in the morning? Snow! The crankiest toddler and grumpiest teen will jump in delight when greeted with a blanket of fluffy white snow in the morning. Having a “snow day” is the stuff every student’s wishes are made of. But once the initial jubilation has worn off and the yelps of excitement have died down (hopefully with the mattresses still intact…), it’s nice to have a plan and be prepared with some fun snow activity. Of course, most kids are perfectly happy just building a snowman and throwing around some snowballs, but these creative twists on winter’s most treasured activities will add a fun change and make great memories.

SNOW ICE CREAM First things first. Building snowmen and cities require lots of energy. This delicious snow ice cream will give an instant boost. Yup, you read it correctly. Snow ice cream, as in ice cream made from real snow off your front porch. Bring in a big bowl of freshly fallen snow for a winter delicacy.

YOU’LL NEED:

• 4 cups snow • 1 cup milk (Rice/soy/almond milk can be used for those with milk intolerance.) • ¼ cup sugar • 1 tsp. vanilla Place all ingredients in a big bowl and mix well. Take it up a notch with sprinkles, chocolate syrup or a cherry at the top!

SNOW CANDIES

YOU’LL NEED:

• 1 cup pure maple syrup (check the ingredients to make sure it’s 100% maple syrup.) • Clean, fresh snow • Pop sticks • Candy thermometer

Got some extra snow left over? Hey, if you ended up making a triple batch of ice cream, that’s fine! Lots of more snow waiting outside… Time for some snow candies! These candies aren’t actually made of snow but the cold snow is used as an amazing technique to make delicious sweet candy pops. Make enough for all the neighbors; they’ll be coming from the other end of the block…

Pour the maple syrup into a pot and bring it to a boil on the stove. Continue to boil the syrup until it reaches about 235-240° on the thermometer. Pat a layer of snow onto a baking sheet and pour the syrup in vertical strips over the snow. Press a popstick into the syrup at the tip of the strip and roll it up into a pop. Pure deliciousness!

UNIQUE SNOWMEN

COLORED SNOW Alright. You’re ready and full of energy to get your feet in the snow! Stomp around, make snow angels, throw a couple of well-aimed snowballs and color the town red! Well, at least color the snow red, or any color you may fancy. Simply fill a few empty spray bottles with water and a vibrant color of food coloring (liquid watercolors can also be used). Screw the lid on, give it a good shake, and aim at your snow canvas. Round up your artists and bundle ‘em up in some warm clothes; they’ll be spending hours out there painting every inch of snow within eyesight…

Still see some white snow? Don’t forget the classic snow creation — the famous snowman! But you want to be unique. Everyone can make a cute little snowman, but how many upside-down snowmen have you run into? Make them do headstands and cartwheels, tumble sauces and flips. You’ll be laughing so hard, you might end up looking the same…

Got little hands who want to build a snowman? If they’re finding it challenging to roll three balls and stack them without smashing one or all, try this fun, alternative method of snowman building. Roll one manageable sized ball for little hands, and bring out Mr. Potato Head. Use the facial features and hats to create the most adorable collection of snow critters! Works very well as an indoor snow activity when temperatures are too low for the young ones.

MR. POTATO HEAD

However you’ll be spending the day, don’t forget the camera! Snap a shot or two to make long-lasting memories that you’ll be fondly reminiscing about in a few years down the line. And of course, you can always send us the photo so we can share the fun!

KOL KAPAYIM YOM TEFILLA FOR CHOLEI YISROEL There are many forms of healing. With the advance of modern medicine, ‫בחסדי שמים‬, new treatments and remedies for illnesses and ailments are discovered daily. There are institutions full of people studying, learning and researching diseases and their potential cures. But there is a powerful tool for healing that has withstood the tests of time throughout the ages, whose potency remains just as effective and just as relevant despite its age. This remedy has been known to carry vast powers to not only heal, but to soothe, to encourage, to uplift. It has accompanied our people through thick and thin, and it is still our first go-to address for expressing ourselves in all circumstances. Why, we even use it to express our joy, our appreciation, our longing. The ‫ ספר תהילים‬is our connection to the ‫רבונו של עולם‬. And it is a medicine not to be kept out of the reach of children. C. was a proud ‫ כפים‬student at the center, who regaled all who would listen to him with stories of his friends, his teachers, and his ‫ כפים‬classroom. So when the doctor determined that his numbers were too low, and he wanted his feisty little patient admitted, it was with no small amount of coaxing that his mother was able to get him to agree to the idea that

he would be an in-patient ‫ כפים‬class member. She promised him that the teachers would send all his “schoolwork” to the hospital, that his friends will send him ‫ רפואה שלמה‬cards, and that when the doctor allows it – he can go back to school. Well, the hours turned into days, and the days into weeks, and still C. needed the hospital care. He settled into a routine – sort of – of being the student in his hospital bed. But, in the ‫ כפים‬sterile classroom, things were just not the same without him. Every single morning, before davening, all the ‫ קינדערלאך‬suffering from immunocompromised diseases, began their day with a ‫קאפיטל תהילים‬, and a ‫ בקשה‬to the ‫אייבערשטער‬, to please send C. a ‫ רפואה שלמה‬so he can come back to school .‫געזונט און שטארק‬ And the ‫רבונו של עולם‬, who loves the ‫ תפילות‬of ‫קינדערלאך‬, especially these precious ‫נשמות‬, answered their heartfelt ‫!תפילות‬ The doctor finally cleared him to go back to school! The preparations for the welcome back party were grand, as was the excitement of the teachers and ‫קינדערלאך‬ alike. And one little boy in an act of impulsive kindness took his prize possession, a screw driver he was hiding in his briefcase (yes, he’s a boy), wiped it with a Clorox wipe, to ster-

ilize it – and extended it to his friend with the exclamation – I missed you sooo much, and you know, I knew you would come back… because we davened for you! January 18 will ‫ בעז”ה‬be a historic ‫ יום תפילה‬for ‫חולי ישראל‬. In homes and offices in Boro Park, Williamsburg, Monsey, New Square and other communities, thousands of voices will be raised in unison to beseech ‫רחמי שמים‬ through the ‫ כח‬of ‫ תהילים‬and ‫צדקה‬. The ‫ תפילות‬and generous support for Kapayim will surely make a ‫ רושם‬in ‫שמים‬. ‫ כפים‬knows the real side effects of illness. The effect it has on the entire family. For they are there for hundreds of families every single day. In the homes, in hospitals and at the Kapayim Centers. ‫ כפים‬sees the pain and suffering up close, but they also know that hope and happiness can be part of the equation. Must be part of the healing. And therefore, ‫כפים‬ knows the potency of ‫תפילה‬. The lifeline for every ‫ איד‬in every situation. ‫ אידן‬are known for their ‫רחמנות‬, their exceptional devotion to each other. We share pain. We share joy. Let’s share the ‫ כח‬of our ‫תפילות‬. On every block. In every building. Wherever they may be, ‫ אידן‬will join together in unity on one day. Will you miss this opportunity?

‫ אי”ה‬Wednesday, January 18.

Real Estate The Winter Realty Market PRISTINE. SPARKLING. WHITE. WINTER. How beautiful is fresh fallen snow. How nice all of our homes look dusted in white. The world is so clean and fresh. And then it is day two. The roads have been cleared, and there is ugly, brown slush on the streets. There is ice on the walkways... UGHH!! Winter. How does winter weather affect the purchase and financing of a home? Financing is easy. There is no effect at all. Appraisals can be done. Closings can take place. The processing of a mortgage file goes on despite the weather outdoors. Mortgage companies are not schools. They are open on snow days. Lock dates aren’t being pushed out, so everything just goes on. But for a homeowner selling a home and the buyer buying a home the weather does play an important role. If the weather is that bad, buyers tend not to come out to see homes. They don’t want to brave the weather. They will wait for another day. Home sellers also don’t want to show their homes when there is bad weather. They don’t want wet shoes and boots leaving a mess throughout their homes, carpets getting stained and floors getting spotted. If there is snow on the roofs and on the porch, home buyers don’t know what is underneath the snow. If there is a pool, they can’t do an inspection to make sure all is in working order. A buyer has less information than if they had waited until the weather was better as far as outdoor overall condition of the property, the landscape, etc. Statistically, the winter time has less new homes on the market than the spring. Hence house prices seem to be higher in the spring when there is more choice of new homes and new buyers come from all over, anxious to see homes and be ready to close after the school year is over. You might have second thoughts about being one of those house hunters braving the rain, sleet or snow to find your perfect home in the winter months. Likewise, if you’re looking to sell your beloved home in the winter, you might be thinking about holding off until the spring. But possibly, winter real estate is ripe for opportunity.

136 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 11, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Mortgage companies are not schools. They are open on snow days.

Obviously, Mother Nature is in charge and turbulent weather can be a pain in the neck, since it directly affects the number of interested folks looking to buy in winter. Because there are usually less buyers in the market due to the weather and plus many people get bad advice from their real estate agent to wait until spring, lower inventory of homes on the market may result in a buyer getting a home at a much better price. A good piece of advice to house hunters is to keep the house search going regardless of the season. A home that meets their ideal criteria and at the right price can pop up on the market at any time. And for sellers, it is a great time to sell. The buyers who are in the market are serious and have more than likely been looking for a while and have possibly lost a house or maybe a few to other bidders.

R E F F O L A I C ! E N P O S ING SO END 40 DAYS HAZKARA WITH THE DAILY TEHILLIM RECITING

AT THE KEVER OF THE RENEWED TZADIK

The lower house inventory in the winter impacts competition for buyers. They don’t have as much to look at, which means sellers have less competition in the housing market. This lends to more homes going into multiple-offer situations. This is a direct effect of the lack of inventory. There is still a tremendous amount of qualified buyers looking and just not enough good-quality homes for them to purchase, so when something good hits the market, it is usually under contract in a matter of days and may have multiple offers. Some suggestions to help to close a deal more quickly: The down payment isn’t always the biggest concern for sellers. It’s more about the terms, the financing type, short inspection periods, short closing periods and if you can give the seller time to stay in the home after closing if they need it. A good real estate agent is key. One who can keep you informed of any current and newer listings. For the seller, an experienced real estate agent can help woo and wow a winter buyer over the competition in any season. Lastly, have your home priced correctly, and have it staged and in tip-top shape; the buyers who are looking to make a purchase in the winter should consider putting in an offer, and as the saying goes, it only takes one buyer to meet the seller’s ultimate objective of selling!

Classifieds A structured telephone support group within the Frum community is now being formed for parents of autistic children. A telephone meeting allows for privacy and anonymity and the convenience of remaining in your own home. Autism affects 1 in 68 children. It is a childhood disorder that can isolate families from the community, can cause difficulties in family routines such as mealtime, bedtime and bath-time and can interfere with family leisure time pursuits just to name a few difficulties. The support group will be facilitated by Mrs. Rochelle Leiser, a special educator and an experienced mother of an autistic child andDr. Faye Levy OTD, OTR/L whose specialty is autism. A support group can help mothers process their concerns, share similar experiences, learn helpful parenting strategies as well as learn about helpful resources in and near the community. Special concerns of mothers will be addressed. Please register by calling Dr. Levy at 45-596-6763 Registration is required so that we can interview you to find out your concerns so we may prepare for each meeting. It is also important that we have your contact information so we may send you information regarding topics we discuss. Your contact information will notbe shared with anyone else. MAKING A SIMCHA?
