DOES HE REALLY HAVE TO TOUCH EVERYTHING? TIME TO TOUCH BASE WITH KIDS FIRST

If your child has the need to be overly hands-on with everything within reach, your child may have a sensory issue. Other kids may have the opposite reaction to sensory stimuli and recoil from certain textures, noises or visual cues. Kids with sensory issues can have a hard time in school and relationships due to either overor under-stimulation, causing them to feel uncomfortable and unhappy. They might be impulsive, disorganized and have difficulty following instructions. They might even seem disconnected from the world around them. Kids First Occupational Therapists are specialists in getting to the root of your child’s sensory and general processing issues, helping your child process the world in a manner that will set your child up for success.

RE: THURSDAY LEFTOVERS ON SHABBOS

Everest Equity Company , Inc. THE

The remark in last week’s inbox regarding serving leftovers on Shabbos seemed to me as if I would have written it, and it gave relief to the debate going on in my mind since I read original letter. I always try, especially before short Fridays, to cook all Shabbos foods on Thursday for a calm(er) erev Shabbos. I cook extra, and when done, I prepare everything in pans and pots ready to be placed onto the hot plate on erev Shabbos and then I serve the “leftovers” for supper. So why feel that I give leftovers on Shabbos? I really cook it only l’kavod Shabbos. A Busy Mommy

I wanted to add some thoughts regarding the letter about eating Shabbos foods on Thursday. For years, I’ve been doing just that, as it wasn’t possible to cook a full supper on Thursday in addition to Shabbos foods. I called a prominent Rav to discuss the original writer’s concerns and he said that as long as I make sure there’s enough left over for Shabbos, it’s not only permissible, but it’s a mitzvah! He pointed out that serving leftovers on Sunday, which were already on the flame all Shabbos, is not very healthy, and he felt it was preferable to eat the “leftovers” of Shabbos on Thursday instead of Sunday. I’ve happily been cooking Shabbos on Thursday for years, and I don’t think Shabbos ever suffered any lack of kavod because of it. No Longer Confused

THE YISSACHAR-ZEVULUN PARTNERSHIP I’m following along with interest the discussion about our yungerleit being in kollel. I’ve been there too. I think one aspect that was not M&S SHOE REPAIR

yet brought up was the beauty in the system called the “YissacharZevulun Partnership.” We see in last week’s parsha that Yissachar recognizes the greatness in Torah learning and prepares to accept a simpler lifestyle. Yet Zevulun, with his capabilities, goes out to work, and even if he makes sure to learn early mornings and evenings, is still responsible to see that the full-time talmidei chachamim are covered financially. So my thoughts are that women can work to support their husbands’ Torah learning, but they shouldn’t be carrying the entire burden. P.S. We need these unbelievable teachers, secretaries, principals, etc. for our daughters’ schools. Let’s give them the appreciation they deserve! Let’s all work together and make sure to do our part in this partnership. A Reader

SAME-DAY RETURNS I’m writing this letter, hoping that some of Monsey’s store owners will be reading it too. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a pair of pants in my son’s size, since he was in desperate need of a new one. Later in the day, when I tried the pants on, I realized that the cut was way too narrow. After checking the receipt for the store’s return policy, I was shocked that it said that

they only offer same-day exchanges for credit card purchases. How is one supposed to get back to the store still before that night? Most of us don’t live around the corner from stores. I couldn’t send my daughter and I couldn’t get out still that day. “Same-day returns” barely gives the customer a chance to get their money back for purchases that aren’t good. I’m hoping that this will give store owners food for thought, and make them reconsider that policy. Frustrated Customer

ADVANCE PLANNER I really enjoy your recipe section and the great ideas featured. I would like to know if you’d be able to publish your Purim and Pesach recipes even earlier than you do, as when they are featured so close to yom tov, I am usually done with my preparations. A Monsey Resident

As told to: Basya Lev

I WAS SUBBING for a nursery school teacher during the parsha in which Yitzchak is born. I decided we would make voch nacht bags and fill the bags with popcorn which I would pop with the kids. I knew the school had an oven in their kitchen. So together with brown paper lunch bags, stickers, markers and popcorn, we headed to the kitchen. I planned that they would decorate the bags while the popcorn popped. Unfortunately, just as we entered the kitchen, I saw the oven was no longer there. My assistant went looking for a popcorn popper while the children decorated their bags. She came back empty handed. However, worry not. Hashem truly prepares the solution before the problem, for just as we were about to go to the kitchen, the teacher I was subbing for had someone deliver to the classroom pekelach bags for each child from the voch nacht she made the night before. The children were now able to take the potato chip bag and lollipop and place it in their own decorated voch nacht bag!

A Yeshiva Life of Torah and Health By: Basya Kovacs, Nutrition Counselor

Getting Back on Track At the beginning of any new food plan, people are super excited. They see that they are losing weight and feeling healthier and more energetic and this keeps them motivated to stay on track. But no one is perfect forever. Sooner or later it is inevitable to eat something you hadn’t planned: extra donuts on Chanuka, extra nosh at a school party, too much challah on Shabbos... The question is: Then what? People often have a black-and-white attitude towards dieting. Either they are eating perfectly and staying on track, or they are a total mess. As soon as they take an extra bite of cake or challah or potato kugel or whatever the unplanned food was, it throws them off track and they end up eating poorly for the rest of the day, or sometimes even several days, before they finally get back on track. Just because you fell off track once, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get back on track right away. Of course the extra food

is disappointing, and frustrating, because it is a setback from our goals. However, the trick is to get hold of yourself as quickly as possible in order to minimize the caloric damage. It is so important to realize that the difference between a slipup and a full-blown binge is drastic. This is why we always encourage our clients to make an effort to stop themselves in their tracks! So the goal when getting off track is to get back on track immediately! The least effective way to renew your commitment to eating well is to tell yourself “I’ll start again tomorrow.” “Tomorrow” can be 5,000 calories, or almost two pounds later! On our plan we recommend eating five times a day (or even more); this means breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner. This structure is useful for keeping your metabolism up and running, but can also be used as a guide to help you get back on track. For example, if you chose poorly

THE BALANCING BOCHUR: Sruli Englander* Height: 5'8 | Starting weight: 180 pounds Current weight: 165.25 pounds | Weight lost this week: 2.5 pounds I had a wedding this week, and I felt so good! I got so many compliments on how I look, which made me feel like all my hard work is paying off. Also, I felt so under control. Usually when I go to a wedding I come home feeling sick and stuffed and guilty. This time I knew exactly what to do. I had a snack right before I left to the wedding. When I got there I had some fruit, and then while I was waiting for the main course to be served all I ate was pickles — I wasn’t even hungry because I had a snack right before I left. When the main course was served I ate most of it: chicken, vegetables and some potatoes. After that I was satisfied, and just had two bites of dessert, just to taste! I came home feeling satisfied and proud of myself.

during lunch, make sure that by the time afternoon snack comes around, you are eating well again. Don’t make the mistake of skipping your second snack in order to undo the damage you did at lunch, which just prolongs the cycle of overeating and undereating. Just go back to your normal food plan. We also recommend that if (and when) you do eat something you hadn’t planned, you write it down on a food log. It is always a good idea to keep a food log of what you are eating throughout the day, but it is particularly important when you go off track. Seeing everything written down on paper is a powerful experience that can help keep things in check for the next time. Though we like to believe that once we decide to eat perfectly we will do so forever, realistically, we are bound to be challenged again. Any slip-up in a healthy eating plan is actually worthwhile if it teaches us a bit more about ourselves, our eating habits, our strengths and our weak points. This way, when a similar situation arises, we are more prepared, and can handle it better. Basya Kovacs is a nutrition counselor at Nutrition by Tanya and is the manager of the Monsey location. THE HEAVY STAGE CURTAINS SEEM TO SHIVER IN ANTICIPATION, rippling in suspense, as a packed theater of women waits. A charge is in the air. Tonight, the performers are a group of women whom no one has ever thought of inviting to perform. These women have heard many choirs, but seldom been invited to raise their own voices in song; watched many plays, but never been chosen to walk the boards. So often confined to the shadows because of their limitations, tonight is the night the spotlight will shine — on their talents and gifts.

January 18, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 51 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Hi, I’m Shira. I love practicing, and I feel so important and confident when I am on stage in front of everyone. I am in three dances and I am playing a piano solo.

My name is Elana. I have a role in the drama as an army general. I feel amazing and special when I am on stage, and people come special to see me.

Curtain up. The ladies of SHARE, tonight’s stars in Season of Change, step forward confidently into the roles they have practiced and developed over months of rehearsal. From a place deep within, the women express themselves, and what emerges is a symphony of intense courage and beauty. Creative energy and innate talents: song, dance and drama pour out in a crescendo of joy and harmony, a dazzling bouquet of the performing arts. In the audience, there is rapture — and tears. Rapture at the perfectly synchronized dances, the stunning painted scenery and props, the effective costumes. Tears as the truth becomes tangible: every single individual — yes, those who are challenged too — has talent; unique creative gifts which, when expressed, add joy to our world. And their voice is well worth hearing. “When people look at an individual who has special needs, generally the first thing they notice are the physical or intellectual limitations,” says Raizy Pinkasovits, Program Supervisor at SHARE. “What remains hidden are the innate talents and abilities. Many of these women have been blessed with beautiful singing voices, musical souls or dancers’ feet. Their talents often remain undiscovered — because no one would dream of giving them the opportunity or the forum to shine.”

So often confined to the shadows because of their limitations, tonight is the night the spotlight will shine — on their talents and gifts. The Night of the Stars, Chesed 24/7’s annual performance, starring the women of the SHARE Day Hab network, provides that forum. It’s an evening that dazzles — and that changes the community’s perception of these courageous stars in our midst. SHARE individuals awaken every morning to a unique set of struggles unknown to many of us. Yet, just like us, they awaken eager to step up and make a difference in the world, for themselves and for the people around them. They are so eager to connect, to contribute, to grow. THAT’S WHY SHARE Day Hab’s skilled, professional staff and selfless volunteers are committed to helping clients achieve personal fulfillment, to the utmost extent of each one’s individual abilities. Every day, almost 100 adults with disabilities enjoy the opportunity to extend themselves, to give and

52 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 18, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

to grow. SHARE individuals are active contributors to many Chesed 24/7 programs. Some participants package food items for the Hospitality Rooms, others prepare and distribute meals for kimpeturins or homebound individuals in Rockland County. Still others create the Shabbos in a Box packages that are distributed to hospitalized patients on erev Shabbos. These acts of giving help transform SHARE individuals, who are often on the receiving side of things, into givers as well. “I CAN’T TELL you the happiness and personal satisfaction our SHARE participants derive from their services to the community,” Paula Steen, Day Hab Administrative Supervisor says. Participants also have jobs at various sites in the community, including YSV and other local schools, nursing homes, Rockland Kosher Supermarket, Hatzlacha Supermarket, Suffern Library and local hosiery shops. All jobs are supported with social skills workshops, work readiness programs, travel training and more. But NIGHT OF THE STARS remains one of SHARE’s most transformative programs. During months of preparation, the women push themselves beyond social and physical barriers to accomplish what they and others never thought possible. They draw on inner reserves of perseverance to hone natural talent to professional standards. And on the night itself, they shine. The silence in the auditorium, the thunderous applause, the audience’s obvious warm appreciation, empowers the performers with pride, inspiration and a new self-confidence — for nothing succeeds like success. The cast of this year’s performance, Season of Change, supported by a team of 34 special needs individuals who have sewn costumes, built props and painted scenery. “The most beautiful thing about the performance is their attitude,” Raizy Pinkasovits says. “There are no politics among our cast, no jealousy, only genuine joy in this unbelievable opportunity!” IT’S A SHOWCASE of talent, and a source of inspiration. It’s the Night when our sisters, true Stars, show what they can contribute — and when we let ourselves be carried away to a place deep within by the golden strains of their heartfelt voices.

Night of the Stars tickets are selling out fast. Call 1-845354-3233, ext. 1127 for tickets and ext. 1124 for business opportunities and sponsorships.

I’m Eden and I am in two dances: ballet and a solo dance. It’s a lot of fun to be on stage dancing away.

Bashi shares: “I am in dance and choir, where I have a solo song. What I like best about Night of the Stars is that I feel good when I hear how much people enjoyed the performance.”

My name is Shoshana. Night of the Stars is the best! It’s my opportunity to show how much I can do — because people never get to see that.

Ma’amer

• It is assur m’d’Oreisa to gather from the ground any fruits or vegetables or any other gedulei karka (grown in the earth) that is scattered within a radius of more than daled amos and putting them together in one place. • Some poskim hold that the issur d’Oiraisa applies only to the gathering of fruits or vegetables that fell onto the ground directly from the tree on which they were grown. There are other opinions that hold that even if they fell from a basket or other keli onto a non-paved ground, it is considered the issur d’Oreisa of ma’amer. • Gedulei karka that have scattered around in a radius of more than daled amos may not be gathered together. This includes even the ones that are within daled amos. • M’derabonon, it is even assur to gather fruits and vegetables that are scattered around the house. It is, however, muttar to pick up by hand, or to use one’s garment to pick up, just enough fruits that would be used for one seudah. • Therefore, if a dish of fruits or vegetables falls down and the fruits scattered around within an area that is larger than daled amos, one may only pick up by hand the amount that can be eaten at one seudah. • Once they are scattered out more than a daled amos area one may not pick up even those that are closer than daled amos. • It is muttar to sweep up the items into a corner of the room in order to clean up the room. • In situations where it is permitted to pick up fruits as above, one should not remove the entire dirt from the fruits in order not to be over on borer. Before one eats them it is permitted to remove the dirt. • There are some poskim who question what would be the heter regarding pekalech that are thrown in shuls at an aufruf. The reason for this is because many pekalech have nuts or raisins, potato chips or other gedulei karka in them, and if these scatter around within an area of more than daled amos, picking them up could fall under the issur of ma’amer.

Salt Shortage Looming in Spring Valley? (The Journal News) THE ONGOING BATTLE of wills between Spring Valley Mayor Demeza Delhomme and village trustees has taken on a new twist, this time focusing on Spring Valley’s salt stash. While Delhomme has insisted that the village’s salt supply, which is currently at 25 percent of capacity, needs to replenished, village trustees have said that they will not buy salt because prices are currently at a premium.

“It means the mayor is not doing his job,” said trustee Vilair Fonvil. “If you had a good manager in the village you talk about buying salt in June or July. That’s when you buy salt. You don’t buy salt in the winter.” Delhomme disagreed, saying he prefers to buy salt on an as-needed basis. Currently the village has enough salt to keep roads de-iced for one or

two more episodes of bad weather, but Delhomme has countered that one serious snowfall would completely wipe out the village’s reserves. “If we run out of salt and people get hurt, the trustees should be arrested,” said Delhomme. Village trustees have said that in an emergency, they expect to be able to buy additional salt from the Town of Ramapo.

Brooklyn Lawyer Charges Ramapo Police in Cover Up in Death of Yeshiva Student (The Journal News) A MANHATTAN LAWYER has filed papers saying that the Ramapo Police Department was negligent in their investigation of a September accident that took the life of a yeshiva student, deliberately mishandling their inquiry in order to protect a Peekskill police office. Seventeen-year-old Mordechai Tawil died when he was struck by a car driven by Jonathan Mosquera, an off-duty police officer from Suffern who was rushing to get to work.

The accident also injured 19-year-old David Maldonado of Monsey. Both teens were standing at the edge of the driveway of Yeshiva Tiferet Torah on Route 202 at the time of the accident. As a result of the investigation by the Ramapo Police Department, Mosquera was issued four summonses. Ramapo Police Chief Brad Wiedel said that there was no criminality involved despite the fact that the accident was caused when Mosquera tried to pass another vehicle in a no-

passing zone and was speeding at the time of the accident. Maldonado’s lawyer, Herschel Kulefsky, said that the Town of Ramapo intimidated at least one witness and failed to interview others during the course of their investigation. Kulefsky also charged that the Ramapo Police Department may have intentionally distorted or withheld evidence in addition to prejudicing their investigation.

Local Macy’s Stores to be Spared as Massive Closures Are Announced (Syracuse.com) MACY’S LOCATIONS IN the New York City area will not be among the more than 60 stores to be shuttered in 2017. The closures will affect approximately 400 employees in New York State. The Macy’s stores in Nanuet, the Palisades Mall, Yonkers, Middle-

town and Paramus will all continue to operate. Approximately 100 Macy’s locations are expected to close over the next few years, a move prompted by dip in store sales. “While we are pleased with the strong performance of our highly developed online business, as well as the

progress we have made on selling and visual presentation programs and expense reduction initiatives in 2016, we continue to experience declining traffic in our stores where the majority of our business is still transacted,” said Terry J. Lundgren, chairman and CEO of Macy’s Inc.

Stone Recap: Gella brings Malka’la to the party amid her tumultuous fear of Malka’las performance. Malka’la takes the microphone, enraptures her crowd, but messes up the fundraising efforts — again. Gella tries to stop her, but can’t. “MONEY WAS THE STORY, I told myself. The fact was, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t do it anymore. I couldn’t do it alone. I couldn’t. I was an almanah. And I didn’t allow myself to experience that, to admit that — even to myself. I didn’t allow myself to fall apart. I just couldn’t admit it. I am an almanah. I cannot do this alone. This is hard.” All chins were lifted to look at Malka’la. Some faces looked pregood cry. Gella squirmed. “The interesting thing is, I was

closed her eyes again. “Ana b’koach…” She threw a song on the room, sweeping them with her beautiful voice. She sang for a long time, and she cried, and the room cried with her. “I found that Hashem is with us, with me, in my pain. That going in there… it’s not so scary. It’s the fear of pain that’s most painful, because in it is the separation. From Hashem. Who is with us. Always.” And now, she started with songs of happiness, songs of joy and light.

All chins were lifted to look at Malka’la. Some faces looked pre-good cry. Gella squirmed. guided anyway. I needed to do this. I needed to come here, to face my great need, to be with my pain. So I came. The story I told myself was, ‘I need money.’ And it’s true. My children do need shoes. They do need food. They do need a mother who can be there for them without worrying where the next scrap of food will come from. At least a mother who is not mevulval, if not a father. Instead of me running around. But what I found, was…” Malka’la

And before long, the women in that room were standing, nearly dancing, had there been room to move their feet. Instead they swayed. They prayed. They thanked. And when she was done, each woman walked over to Malka’la and took her hand and gave her thanks. They all went to the front hall, where the desk was set up with receiving canisters. And they all gave their wholehearted donation, an additional sum, a few more dollars,

whatever it was that they found in their pocketbook, there in the middle pocket where candy wrappers and loose change lived on. Some wrote new checks. Gella felt the nervous pit in her stomach, but told herself she needn’t feel this way. The women enjoyed the night. The coffers were filling up. She tried distracting herself by greeting each woman with a personalized message. Everyone was milling. The meal had been delicious, and some of Gella’s friends tried clearing tables, even though getting between the people in the overflowing room was an obstacle course. “We made over ten thousand dollars tonight,” Pessy announced loudly in the room. “Gella, ladies, we did this.” Her cheeks were pink blush balls of happiness. Gella was shocked. Her eyes opened wide, she looked at her friends and at Malka’la. All eyes were on Malka’la, on Gella, directed to the front of the room. Malka’la took the mike to her lips again. “I just want to say thank you. I want to say thank you to the woman who has continuously helped

SERIAL

me, Mrs. Gella Kahn. Thank you. And I want to thank all of you for opening your hearts to me. And I want to thank the Bashefer.” She choked up and shook away a tear. “I want to thank the Bashefer for bringing me here. For allowing me to heal. For supporting me, for providing for me, always.” She sang another song. Those people who had meandered out of the house, still making their way down the front stairs, rushed back in. The main room grew full with people. Malka’la sang, as if to herself, as if only she and her Creator were there. When she finished, people still stormed the front desk, giving more, buying more raffle tickets, adding another few dollars to their donations, begging Malka’la to sing another song again. “I’m not a singer,” Malka’la said. “I’m just… a mother.” “Can I ask you to come to our party? We are making a party in Boro Park next week. Would you come and talk and sing for us? We’ll pay you. We’ll pay you nicely.” “Thank you for your invitation. I appreciate it. My real place is in Yerushalayim. With my children.

Why hadn’t she thought of it? She hadn’t even thought she’d make a good shidduch for her son, even though she was a widow of about the same age. It hadn’t occurred to her, when she looked at Malka’la’s thin frame, shabby clothes, lack of success at selling herself and gathering funds. When all she’d seen, up close and too clearly, were Malka’la’s weaknesses, and how small, weak, and sad she was, she hadn’t even thought of her quite as an equal. A project, yes. A receiver for her goodwill, certainly. But someone to be admired? To be begged to stay? To be invited to entertain a crowd? “Malka’la, look, they are all so

This woman, whom Gella didn’t even recognize, took her fur coat out to the back porch, to make a few quick phone calls. I’m going home tomorrow.” “It’s right after Shabbos. We’ll pay to extend your ticket. And we’ll set you up in Boro Park, to stay there, so you can collect there.” “I think there might be an event on Wednesday for which you can also speak. We’ll double book you, make it worth your while to stay. Let me find out for you. Wait just five minutes.” This woman, whom Gella didn’t even recognize, took her fur coat out to the back porch, to make a few quick phone calls. Gella looked on. In all the time she’d had Malka’la with her, in her own home, she had never once considered this woman’s great power.

excited.” Malka’la smiled. She was so beautiful. Her eyes were so… light. Rimmed with the most beautiful wet lashes like ridges. Her face was shining, her features so perfect. She was so radiant. So beautifully formed. What if she were Heshy’s wife? “I’m glad they connected to my message. We all search in the darkness. The Aibishter is everywhere. Everywhere. But we still search. Because we search in the darkness. Sometimes, we get glimpses of light. I shared mine today. People appreciate the light.” Gella noticed people were lis-

tening, hanging around to hang on to every word. “I just wanted to tell you thank you. I’m struggling with a child right now,” a woman confided quietly to Malka’la, her eyes filling up quickly while she snorted away her tears. “And this… gave me hope. Thank you.” Malka’la hugged the woman, her thin rod hands wrapped around the ample woman’s waist. “Okay,” the fur-coated woman with the scarf around her collar came back inside. “I have three bookings for you. All within the next week. You go home exactly one week later. But five thousand dollars later, too.” “My place is with my children,” Malka’la said, again. Pessy stood in the doorway, listening in on the exchange. She also dimmed some of the spotlights to indicate to those lingering that it was time to pack up and leave. Still, there were some who seemed to be waiting around, hanging around for a quiet moment with Malka’la. Pessy turned to Gella. “I just want to say,” she murmured, “that I see Malka’la wants to rush home. And I’m sorry for throwing the suggestion at you earlier tonight.” It seemed like centuries ago, when Pessy first mentioned this shidduch idea. “If it’s not a good shidduch, that’s okay. I just thought, he’s been alone for so long. But if not, it’s okay. I’m sorry I said anything.” To be continued... Chany Rosengarten authors columns and serialized novels in leading publications. These meals are great to take along on a short vacation, but are not limited to the vacationer. Everyone can take advantage of a make-ahead meal at one point or another.

Take-Along Meals THE MONSEY VIEW / 69

DELI CHICKEN PATTIES WITH DRESSING It was when I was searching for a foolproof chicken patty to present in this column, that my sister, who turns out amazing food creations in her kitchen, shared this most flavorful version. Thank you, Malky. Although it adds fantastic flavor, you may choose to omit the salami and still have a delicious burger. Alternatively, you can add a finely chopped tomato.

INGREDIENTS: PATTIES 2 pounds ground chicken ½ cup oil 1 ¼ cups breadcrumbs 1 ¼ cups water 2 crushed garlic ½ tsp. Salt

Travelers: Prepare patties in advance. These patties, fried and prepared, stay fresh in the fridge for at least four days. It’s a great pack-along item and pairs well with almost any cold starch or vegetable. Serve them in buns with relish or together with potato salad, pasta salad, canned corn or fresh veggies. (Don’t forget the pickles!) Pack the dressing in individual portion size containers for every family member.

6 eggs 4 oz. sauteed onion ½ pound piece of salami roll, diced into ½-inch cubes

DIRECTIONS: 1. Mix ingredients well and set aside for one hour. 2. Fry in heated oil on both sides until well cooked.

INGREDIENTS: DRESSING When I was growing up, before the vast variety of dips and dressings made their debut, this was the standard dip for any vegetable platter. When nostalgia visits, I prepare this quick-fix to everyone’s delight. ⅓ cup mayo

Variation: For crunchier version, coat each patty in cornflake crumbs before frying.

1 T. mustard 1 ½ T. ketchup

Mix well

INDIVIDUAL GRILLED SALMON DISH The sandwich maker is a fantastic invention and a great breakfast pack-along. To minimize gadget packing, I tried a slice of salmon in it with delicious results. The beauty of this recipe is that each portion is prepackaged at home in its own parchment bag ready for grilling. Enjoy! Safety alert: Once fish has been prepared, make sure to cook within 24 hours.

INGREDIENTS: 4 slices salmon fillet Colored peppers, cut into rings Olive oil Salt, black pepper and paprika to taste 4 parchment bags

DIRECTIONS: 1. Slip 4-5 pepper rings into a parchment bag. 2. Sprinkle salmon with paprika, black pepper and salt. Pour 1 T. olive oil onto each slice. 3. Slip into bag over vegetables. Fold over parchment bag. 4. Place all bags together into a sealed container or Ziploc bag. Keep in a cold section in your fridge, or place over ice or ice pack for traveling. 5. Ten minutes before you’re ready to serve supper, place in sandwich maker for seven minutes.

MEAL IN A SALAD BOWL The nice thing about this dish is that all the prep is done at home and you get to enjoy a full-bodied, flavorful meal without cleanup.

INGREDIENTS:

PASTA

4-6 chicken cutlets

½ tsp. paprika

1. Boil one package spiral pasta, cooked in water to which 2 T. oil and 1 T. salt has been added. When cooked, rinse well in cold water.

⅓ cup oil

1 tsp. salt

2. Place in a container. Add another T. oil and mix.

3 cloves garlic cut in half

2 T. vinegar

¼ tsp. black pepper

Bread crumbs

CUTLETS

VEGETABLE WITH VINAIGRETTE

DIRECTIONS: 1. Mix all marinade ingredients in a Ziplock bag. 2. Cut each cutlet into approximately six strips, and add to bag. Allow to marinate for up to 12 hours.

1 can black olives

2 crushed garlic

1 purple onion

2 T. honey

2 boxes cherry tomatoes, cut in half

½ tsp. pepper

½ cup olive oil

3. Preheat oven to 350°. 4. Place bread crumbs into large bag. Place a few strips of cutlets into bag and shake, discarding the garlic pieces as you find them. 5. Place on oiled cookie sheet. Bake 20-25 minutes uncovered.

1 tsp. salt 2 T. vinegar

Mix all ingredients in a well-sealed container. The olive oil will congeal but will go back to normal texture as soon as you bring it back to room temperature.

ASSEMBLY Each of these three ingredients should be stored in the refrigerator in separate containers. Toss together all ingredients approxmiately 1/2 hour before serving for flavors to blend. Best served at room temperature.

So why did you say you can’t get away? You don’t want to spend too much. You don’t want to shlep along food. You don’t want to leave your kids behind. You do, but you don’t have where to leave them! You don’t have a car. It’s so hard to find a place with minyan in the winter. You have such a small window of vacation, that you don’t have time to travel. Been there. Said that. And then I had that tiny two-day reprieve squished in between two family weddings, where both my husband and I had 48 hours of down-time. I would be able to work remotely for part of the time and my husband had no obligations. It was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. And so we reserved two nights at a hotel at the outskirts of Monsey. Travel time was minimal. The hotel was well priced. I would take along my kids and drop them off at school during the day. We would be right next to a minyan and kosher food. There were even kid-friendly attractions nearby. A win-win situation. We implemented a few strict rules to make it feel like we were really away. No going home for anything. No davening at the regular shul. No shopping at the grocery store we frequent. Being that I had to put in a few hours of work and my kids had school at that time, we worked out our schedule so that my husband dropped them off at school on the way to Shacharis, and I spent that time working. We had a leisure day to spend as we please until it was time for school pickup and mincha, from where we took our kids for some fun, and then it was on to supper and some leisure time in the hotel. We came home refreshed and ready for routine. Try it! For one night or two, with the kids or without or even just with friends. Now during quiet seasons, hotels are often happy to let you check in early, so make the most of your stay.

DAIRY FAVORITES NOW JUST AS TASTY IN PAREVE WITH NORMAN’S DAIRY’S VEGAN MARGARINE The healthier alternative to butter with no trans fat and loads of Omega 3 RUTHERFORD, NJ – Move over butter! The answer to all your pareve problems has just arrived on refrigerator shelves with Norman’s Dairy’s new Vegan Margarine. The nation’s leading innovator in the Cholov Yisroel market has ventured into non-dairy territory with the new butter alternative that is sure to have your taste buds confused. Vegan Margarine boasts loads of Omega-3 and Omega-6, no artificial flavors, no trans fat, and it’s dairy and gluten free to boot! Vegan margarine is perfect for using at a fleshig meal, as a spread, on garlic bread, and as a butter substitute. “When you keep kosher, products like the margarine are welcome because many favorite dairy dishes are prohibited at meat meals. For example, one cannot use butter with mash potatoes or corn on the cob, and even a simple sandwich after eating meat becomes difficult because butter and cream cheese cannot be used,” explains a company spokesman. “The current margarine offerings are bland and not that tasty, so we are providing a creamy non-dairy option that actual tastes delicious. This way all your favorite dairy recipes can be recreated with a non-dairy substitute but still taste appetizing. Our taste testers weren’t even able to differentiate between the dairy butter and Vegan Margarine we presented to them.” The new Vegan Margarine reinforces Norman’s leading role in the Cholov Yisroel and dairy alternative industry. Committed to providing the highest quality products, Norman’s is the only Cholov Yisroel brand that has their very own facility fostering great innovation, and allowing for vigilant quality control and high kashrus standards. In addition to the margarine, Norman’s yogurt products include – LowFat, 80 Lite, and Poppers in an extensive range of delectable flavors. Norman’s Greek yogurt lines include Greek Original, Light, Creamy Blends, Kids, Stackers, and Pro+ and are available in all kosher supermarkets around the country.

For further details about Norman’s products, check out - www.normansdairy.com.

By R.C. Steif

HOW WOULD YOU like to earn an annual salary of $400,000, with an additional $50,000 allowance for personal expenses, $100,000 travel expenses and $19,000 for entertainment? That’s not all: you get to live rent-free in one of the most well-appointed homes in the United States, tour the world on a luxury jet, benefit from free medical coverage, a personal chef, maid, butler, laundromat and more. Seems like a dream job? If you’ve ever been a U.S. president you know that these perks are hard earned! The truth is, that though the president’s salary may seem insanely generous, most CEOs who carry a weight close or equal to the president of the world’s superpower, earn a lot more than the president does. In fact, being the ambitious, accomplished people they are, many presidents and vice presidents take a salary cut when assuming presidency. Ego inflation and income earned from private ventures which come as a result of being president (such as biographies, speeches, etc.) compensates handsomely!

LIFE IN T HE W HIT E HOUSE

ernment. Different branches of the government foot different bills. For example, affairs for foreign dignitaries, military dinners, educational events and so on, are paid for by the government branch under whose jurisdiction they fall. However, meals taken in the presidential living quarters are billed to the presidential family.

L AUNDR Y Though we’re decades past the backbreaking “laundry days” of old, laundry still is a sore topic for many women. Not so for the first lady. Long gone are the days when Abigail Adams — the first first lady to occupy the White House — oversaw laundry hanging in the East Room; today there’s an efficient, high-tech laundry establishment in the White House for this purpose. Most of the family’s clothing, bed linens and towels are done in-house. However, when clothing is sent to the dry cleaners, the first family must foot the bill (though the staff does oversee that it gets there and back home).

CL I NIC One of the perks most associated with the presidency is residency at the White House. The White House Medical Unit is directed Though it is just one building, the White House by an official physician, and includes a staff functions as a home, office, grand museum and of medical personnel including physicians, ultimate event site! provide medical care to the president, vice president and their families, and visitors to the White House. During presidential trips, one or some of the staff members will travel with the president so that he’s never far from medical care.

STA FF In addition to the large crew of cleaning, household and maintenance staff — as well as personal secretaries and attendants (paid for by the federal government), the president may hire a total of 34 staff members for domestic service and up to 100 assistants for the White House office. Over 5,000 (!) individuals are employed at the White House for personal and official duties. Remember the size of the house and grounds? That explains a lot… Just one example of a full-time job you may never have thought exists: a chief floral designer who designs and arranges floral decorations for the first family’s private entertaining and state functions.

SILV ER W INGS A ND W HEELS Included in the presidential package is free travel on Air Force One, Marine One helicopters and the presidential limousine. Additionally, the president gets a $100,000 travel account for him and his staff to use for travel expenses not otherwise covered. Taxpayers will be glad to hear that the president isn’t getting away completely scot-free! When traveling for personal reasons, such as vacation, the presidential family pay for their own lodgings, and though they’ll travel in luxurious Air Force One for security reasons, they’ll be billed the equivalent of economy class air fare. Economy prices for luxury air travel sounds like a worthy trade-off!

TIME TO GO Leaving all of that behind is tough when the president’s term is over. Here’s something to sweeten the loss.

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 18, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Former presidents are compensated for office space and supplies at any location in the United States. Furthermore, funds are also available for travel if it’s related to the former president’s status as an official representative of the United States government. Congress initially allocates a lump sum for the transition, which varies according to congressional decisions, and offers a scheduled payment plan for the months and years thereafter.

PR ESIDEN T I A L PE NSION The generosity continues… Though social security pensions are subject to many restrictions in the United States, including a minimum amount of years spent in the workforce, the U.S. President is above that restriction; four or eight (or less, if taking over presidency mid-term) years in office, he’ll receive a lifetime pension of a bit over $200,000 annually. Additionally, former presidents, their spouses and minor children are provided lifetime protection by the Secret Service, as well as free treatment in military hospitals.

FYI • The vice president’s salary is a mere $237,700 annually. • George Washington and John F. Kennedy declined the executive salary (though they were obliged to take, by law, a minimum wage), and Herbert Hoover donated his presidential salary to charity. Incoming President (-elect) Donald Trump boasted that he will not accept more than $1.00 of the presidential salary. Time will tell whether that remains so. • At a $400,000 annual salary, the U.S. president is the highest paid state leader. In China, the government leader is paid only $22,000 (though it is reportedly compensated by generous bribes). • In the early years of the state, allocations for the White House were kept to a minimal level, and presidential expenditures were carefully scrutinized. In 1825, for example, John Quincy Adams was so strongly challenged for spending $61 out of a furniture fund on a pool table for the family quarters that he finally paid for it out of his own pocket.

As told to M. C. Millman IT WAS RAINING. Not really anything new in Florida, although we had been lucky enough to have totally rain-free days during our visit to the grandparents — until now. As we went through the departure gate, I hadn’t even the slightest premonition that we wouldn’t be landing in the less than three hours our nonstop flight to New York was scheduled to take. We were just happy to be boarding on time and heading back to Monsey, thus providing a smooth finish to our annual midwinter visit to my parents — not that the kids were too happy to see an end to their vacation. After all, that meant school was starting the next day. This trip each year gave the kids a positive boost and reenergized them for the second half of the school year. Once the doors were sealed, though, the real fun began. “This is your captain speaking,” came the voice over the loudspeaker as my girls sat at attention, thrilled to be hearing from the actual pilot of their plane. “Seems there is some lightning right now, but there should be a little clear spot soon. So, we’re hoping to take off in twenty minutes.” “Okay,” I cheerfully told my girls, not worried in the slightest. “We should still be able to make up that time and get home pretty much on schedule.” Thirty-five minutes later, with the rain showing no sign of letting up and the lightning still flashing somewhere up in the sky, we got the same announcement from the same super-regretful pilot. Just

another “twenty minutes.” “How is Tatty going to know when to come get us?” my ever thoughtful Malky, my six-year-old worried. “Don’t worry,” Rivky, two years older, comforted her sister. “Mommy will call him so he knows we might be a little late.” After nearly three hours of sitting at the gate, we were almost going against FAA regulations, according to our pilot. Clearly the ever increasing delay was being skillfully managed by the airline. I suppose that was why we got moved onto the tarmac, allegedly third in line for a takeoff that still wasn’t happening. And then . . . “This is your pilot speaking.” With a sinking heart, I realized that my girls were not quite so thrilled to hear the pilot’s voice over the loudspeaker by now — neither was I.

none was forthcoming from the understandably surly passengers. “But it seems I will be going against the rules if I fly you all the way to New York, and so this flight will be flying to Atlanta first, and then go onto New York, otherwise I won’t be able to fly you.” “Get us a new pilot!” people shouted from up and down the aisles as my pair looked on with wide-eyed interest at such juvenile adult behavior. “Let me off this plane!” a man two rows in front of us on the other side of the aisle was exclaiming angrily. Who wanted to go to Atlanta when we were supposed to have arrived in New York on a nonstop flight long ago? Not that getting off would help. Temper tantrums notwithstanding, our nonstop flight was making an unscheduled stop. “Why does your flight now say

Who wanted to go to Atlanta when we were supposed to have arrived in New York on a nonstop flight long ago? “Not another twenty minutes,” I sighed, glancing down at my fidgeting girls sitting on either side. “Seems we have another regulation we’re up against.” The pilot actually had something new to say, but clearly it wasn’t going to be good news. “I’ve already stayed overtime to try to get you folks to New York.” If he wanted a standing ovation,

it’s going to Atlanta?” my husband called me in puzzlement as we sat still waiting for takeoff to our new destination. Lo and behold a short time later, we were on our way to Atlanta. When you’re on a flight that is meant to last for three hours and it is already well into its fifth hour, you run into some problems. For one thing, despite being con-

stantly plied with peanuts (which we did eat) and free liquor (which I passed on, thank you very much) those items did not assuage the hunger pangs brought on by missing a real meal when you have only brought a small amount of emergency snack foods. Another new fact we learned, was that there is actually a limited amount of water in the bathrooms of a plane, which only makes sense when you think about it, but who thinks about it? But what it meant at the time was that as we took off five hours late, we already had all bathrooms out of order. Also at that point, no one’s electronics were really working. To say the natives were restless would be an understatement, especially the kids who had absolutely nothing to do. Out of sheer desperation to entertain my girls, and to make this last leg of the trip at least a tiny bit fun, despite the terrible delays and the overall abysmal experience, I started a game that was joined by two other young girls in the seats behind us. “This is a memory game,” I said. “We need to come up with a girl’s name. We take turns, and no one can repeat a name the other person said before.” There were some surprising names given during the game. Both sides seemed to think so. I’m sure the girls who joined us couldn’t help but imagine that we were making up the names as we went along. Names like Chaya, Roizy, Yehudis, Chumi — they had probably never even heard them before. My girls, were equally puzzled with names like Skyler, Latisha and Piper. But at least we were all too polite to question the strangeness of the other family’s selection of girls’ names. We landed in Atlanta and were told that luckily, we didn’t even have to get off. Luckily? There was a whole long line of people who jumped up the instant the wheels

touched the runway, waiting to deplane ASAP. “Where are they all going?” Rivky asked. “This isn’t Monsey, right?” “Right,” I said, wondering if this was all my girls were going to remember from this trip — how awful the end had been. “I’m not sure what they hope to accomplish by getting off the plane now, since we are going to take off again in twenty minutes.” Famous last words. Twenty minutes turned into twenty minutes after that, and another twenty as well — all announced in the reassuring voice of our new pilot at regular thirty-five minute intervals. And then as the cleaning service made its way through the plane and our bathrooms returned to full functioning mode, we thought we would be on our way, but no. The airline wanted to make things up to us after all the hours we had sat captive on their plane, and thus a full gourmet dinner arrived. The menu was announced over the loudspeaker, and included a kosher selection. The announcement was followed by: “We can’t be sure what your choices will be, so we will be lining up in the front with the people in the back rows coming forward first to make your menu selection and—”

The rest of her words were drowned out by an uproar. “Get off the plane!” “Close the doors!” “We don’t want your food!” “Just leave it and close the doors!” yelled an actual thinking individual. And the airline hostesses did just that — fast. Finally, eleven hours after first boarding the plane we landed. Yes, eleven hours later. As I staggered out of my seat, ready to pull down our carry-ons, I tried to figure out how I was going to fix this horrible end to what had otherwise been an incredible and memorable trip for my girls. And then I heard it. “Mommy,” said Malky as she sat patiently in her seat waiting for her turn to join the line of people exiting the plane at long last. I looked down at her with a strained smile, afraid of what I was about to hear. “We are so lucky!” she said. “Lucky?” I asked, looking her in complete befuddlement. “How are we lucky?” “Our vacation got to be so much longer this way,” she said, as she and Rivky both looked up at me smiling cheerfully. From the mouth of babes.

BY SHEVY HOLLANDER

Shortest serving president award goes to William Henry Harrison. He got sick and died 1 month into his presidency after contracting pneumonia during his 1-hour-40-minute inaugural address delivered in freezing weather without proper protection. Lightest president award goes to James Madison, who never weighed more than 100 pounds.

Longest serving president award goes to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He served for 12 years and was elected 4 times.

Heaviest president award goes to William Howard Taft at 332 pounds.

Tallest president award goes to Abraham Lincoln at 6 feet 4, who also wore his famous stovepipe hat that added another few inches. Shortest president award goes to James Buchanan at 5 feet 4.

Most names award goes to George Herbert Walker Bush. His son has only three names: George Walker Bush, often called “W” to avoid confusion.

Largest first family award goes to John Tyler, who had 15 kids!

Youngest president award goes to Theodore Roosevelt who took office at the tender age of 42. (Although John F. Kennedy was the youngest elected president at 43 years.)

No-name award goes to the S in Harry S Truman, with which he was named after two grandfathers with names starting with S, and it gets no period at the end.

“No president has ever enjoyed himself as much as I.”

“I may be president of the United States, but my private life is nobody’s business.”

“It’s a poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word.”

NOT YOUR TYPICAL PRESIDENT

Gerald Ford was never elected to office, having been sworn in during the Watergate Scandal, when both the vice president and president were arrested and resigned respectively, in relation to the scandal. Richard Nixon resigned when he saw he would not survive impeachment over the Watergate Scandal.

Andrew Jackson was impeached, but won the case with just one vote.

TRENDSETTERS First president to speak on the telephone: James Garfield, who told Alexander Graham Bell, 13 miles away, “Please speak a little more slowly.” A phone was not installed in the White House, though, until Rutherford B. Hayes’ presidency. His phone number was “1.”

First president to wear long pants, and not knee pants: James Madison

First president to grow a beard: Abraham Lincoln

First president to wear lenses: Ronald Reagan

The first of the four presidents who wore a wig was John Adams. He and his three successors wore curly powdered wigs tied back. Contrary to common belief, George Washington did not wear a wig. CLAIMS TO FAME The teddy bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt, after he refused to shoot a cub during a hunt.

Jelly Belly created a the blueberry flavor bean for Ronald Reagan’s inauguration, who was famously known as the lover of jelly beans, and always had some handy.

Bush Sr. made it into the Japanese language: “Bushusuru” means “to do the Bush thing,” that is, to publicly vomit. This coinage happened after Bush vomited at a banquet hosted by the Japanese prime minister. “You know, once in a while, I get to the point with everybody staring at me, where I want to go back indoors and pull down the curtains.”

“As to the Presidency, the two happiest days of my life were those of my entrance upon the office and my surrender of it.”

Real Estate Moving into the White House PURCHASING A HOME is a unique and subjective. Different families have different reactions, expectations and overall experiences when purchasing a home. There are families struggling into a first home. To some families that first home is a condo, a small three-bedroom home, a standard bi-level, or a 1970 colonial. Others are purchasing new construction or building their first home. Some families are relying on help from others for the down payment or even to make the monthly payments. Other families are more conservative. They make sure that there are reserve funds in the bank in case of a problem. They factor into their budget every cost, including babysitting, vacations, traveling to out-of-town family for yom tov and simchos, and tuition... The list goes on. Then we have the other extreme. People moving from one house to another, sometimes even a step “down.” A prime example is Rochel and Mendy, moving from a gorgeous home in California to Monsey. Mendy had to move because of business. Besides uprooting the children, to find a home with all that they were used to in California was almost impossible. Like any other purchasing family they had to compromise. A good realtor is so important in these situations — a realtor who listens and truly understands. As I write this article I think about a very famous family, making a move next week. A move that they are not making by choice — completely. Along with this move comes the same anxiousness that every family feels when making a move. The total life change of moving from one state to another. The compromise in moving from a home that they love to another by necessity. Moving children from one school to another. This family is the Trump Family. Yes, there are parallels between the president-elect and every one of us. The Trumps currently live in a beautiful home, designed to their taste in Manhattan. In his next job, Mr. Trump has to move to the White House. He and his family have the right to decorate it to their standards, but is it fiscally responsible to spend mil-

lions on décor and furnishings for a temporary home? And in the Trumps’ case, would it be on the American people’s dime? When one of us makes the move and we have to contemplate decorating the home, some families put money aside for that purpose. I have a family now that put aside $200,000 for décor and home furnishings for a new construction, and another family purchasing on the same block who related to me that there will be no funds left over. All they are buying for the new house are new mattresses. And schools. Mr. Trump’s young son is in a school in Manhattan. How will it affect him to move to Washington, D.C.? While most likely, he will get into any school that he applies to, it is a major concern that the school be the right one. When a family moves to

Going the extra mile!

our community, it is also a huge concern that they get into school. Sadly, I have worked with many families who did not move here because they could not get their children into school. A family who comes to mind is one that was moving from Far Rockaway and they had three high school-age daughters. Only two were accepted into high school. There was no room for their tenth grader. As far as the mortgage, the Trumps have it easier. The presidency comes with housing, at the White House, and the Trump’s are not required to apply for a mortgage. Mr. Trump will not have to show his tax returns after all. Now if any of us moves and has to buy a home because most jobs do not come with housing, we would have to provide our tax returns. It would not be acceptable to an underwriter that we were under an audit. We simply would not get approved! We can also discuss the other famous family, moving out of the White House... but we won’t go there today! All levity aside, making a move is huge. The experts that one needs to make the move less stressful are a trusted, competent realtor, one who will help work through all the stresses and needs of a family moving, a mortgage professional to work through the financing, tailoring the right mortgage to fit one’s specific situation and an attorney to protect one’s interests and down payment.
