I found the article on trichotillomania very interesting and informative. For about ten years, from the time I was ten years old until a bit over 20 years old, I suffered from trichotillomania and constantly pulled at my eyebrows and eyelashes. I am now, baruch Hashem, 30 years old and have full and beautiful eyebrows and eyelashes and have overcome the disorder. I found myself feeling very alone when I was suffering. If I can be a friend or mentor to any girls, tweens or teens in the frum community who are struggling and just want to have someone to talk to who really understands, I am happy to be in touch. I would love to give chizuk to other people if I can. Please contact The Monsey View if you would like my contact info. Thank you to The Monsey View for bringing more awareness to this topic. I have been following along with Mrs. Moshel’s organizing column and she has some great ideas. One thing, though, seems to be cause for concern: In this week’s column she discusses keeping a twist-tie around the blender when in use. If you look at all the manuals, they always caution against this because the energy flowing through constricted cords can ch”v cause a fire. Just wanted to share that safety tip! S.R.

LUCKYBUG
Derech eretz comes first! Set an example for your children. When a salesperson shows you a selection, don’t just say “no” if something is not to your liking. Say “It’s not my taste.” Or, “No thank you.” Hand the item back. If the store does not have what you need, please do say, “Thanks for your time; we’ll try again.” When you walk out while the salesperson goes to get you more choices it’s rude, and confusing. And need I mention to say “please” and “thank you”? Shopping can be challenging with kids in tow. However, it can also be a valuable teachable moment for our children. Sincerely, A Local Salesgirl
URGENT NOTICE TO OUR COMMUNITY! As Purim is now fast approaching, many of us buy or receive Purim baskets filled with nosh, nuts and other goodies. Please note that many stores and companies sell wire tin baskets and other dishes that are mechuyev in tevilah, but they do not toivel them (many according to the guidance of their rav, who paskens that as a store they’re not obligated to toivel, and if they would choose to toivel, it wouldn’t even help for the customer). Although we’ve seen that Oh! Nuts did put up a note in their store regarding the above, many other stores have not yet done so, and the public should be aware of this issue and take precaution. (Ask someone at the store about it, and if needed, make sure to toivel the item yourself, or let the recipient know that this dish is not toiveled yet.) Of course everyone should ask their rav how to handle this, as most rabbonim have paskened that these dishes should not be served on a table even with original food still in them before the dish was properly toiveled. SAVE YOUR TEETH FROM MY DENTIST
FASHION & COMFORT MEET IN THIS LUXURIOUS NURSERY SET
I just want to bring to your readers attention that I have visited a dentist who performed unnecessary dental treatments on patients. He may prescribe a filling or a root canal in cases where one is not necessary, as it is more lucrative to do so. If your dentist seems to suggest treatment when you don’t feel it is necessary and your tooth is not bothering you, please don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion to ensure that you are not being fooled. Now that Pesach is coming closer, I’d like to thank The Monsey View for a great idea I picked up in your pages. In your cleaning help issue, someone suggested to use the yellow Ultra-Plush Microfiber Towels from Costco. I bought a package and I use them for everything! They’re great for the sinks and the silver, for glass and windows, and for furniture. They’re cheap enough to throw away when needed and wash very well. Thank you for the great idea. I’d recommend others to try it as well. N.P.

As told to: Basya Lev
MY MOTHER AND I WERE WALKING PAST Kupath Ezra’s shop, when we noticed a used car seat lying out in front of the store. My mother went in and asked how much it cost. When she found out it was only $2, she wanted to buy it. I felt since she didn’t need it, it would be a waste of money, and it wasn’t in very good condition. However, something pulled my mother to buy it...
* * * * * We had just arrived at my house, when my neighbor came over, frantic. She told me she needed to head out of town at that very moment, but didn’t have a car seat. She couldn’t figure out whom she could borrow from and asked me if I had any ideas. With a smile, my mother brought over the $2 car seat she had just bought and told my neighbor she could keep it!

very useful for diabetics. 2. Tooth decay is a major issue related to excessive sugar consumption — and sugar alcohols are the exception. In fact, xylitol has been found to inhibit oral bacteria. For this reason, many manufacturers use xylitol in their oral hygiene products.
Becoming Weigh Smarter
3. If you struggle with your weight (as many people do), then you can consume sugar alcohols instead of sugar, since most sugar alcohols won’t raise your insulin levels at all. Erythritol is the most effective sugar alcohol when it comes to managing your insulin levels.
Sugar Alcohols: What You Need to Know CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, sugar alcohols are not the sugars present in alcohol. The term can be quite misleading, as sugar alcohols are neither sugar nor alcohol. Are you confused? Well, allow me to explain. Sugar alcohols are added to most sugar-free and diet food items, and once you know what to look for, you will be amazed at just how many products contain some form of them. They taste sweet and some are difficult to digest. The chemical structure of sugar alcohols is a hybrid between a sugar molecule and an alcohol molecule. Sugar-free products that contain sugar alcohols do have caloric value. This value is usually half of sugar, with erythritol being the lowest-calorie option. This makes erythritol a great choice for diabetics, or anyone who wants to limit their sugar intake. Here is a list of the most commonly used sugar alcohols, and their caloric value per gram. • Sorbitol – 2.6 calories per gram • Xylitol – 2.4 calories per gram • Maltitol – 2.1 calories per gram • Isomalt – 2.0 calories per gram • Lactitol – 2.0 calories per gram • Mannitol – 1.6 calories per gram • Erythritol – 0.2 calories per gram Chances are that you have seen some of these sugar alcohols in a wide array of diet foods, including candies, gum, ice cream, baked goods and fruit spreads. Xylitol can be found in many oral hygiene products like toothpaste, breath mints, mouthwash, etc.
The Benefits of Sugar Alcohols: 1. Sugar alcohols are slowly, and often incompletely, absorbed in the body. Therefore, very little insulin is needed after consuming them, which makes sugar alcohols

The Drawbacks of Sugar Alcohols:
Chances are that you have seen some of these sugar alcohols in a wide array of diet foods, including candies, gum, ice cream, baked goods and fruit spreads.
1. For many people, sugar alcohols cause bloating and digestive discomfort. This is because sugar alcohols are not completely absorbed by the digestive system, which causes fermentation in the intestines. Due to this fermentation, gas is produced and leads to gastrointestinal distress. If you have a sensitive stomach, and you choose to avoid sugar, stevia and erythritol are great alternatives and will have the least impact on your intestines. I use stevia in my house, and sometimes bring packets with me when I go out to eat. Today, stevia is rated the top sweetener for weight loss and health. It’s not a sugar alcohol, however. And because it’s pretty expensive, most commercial products don’t
WEIGH SMARTER
use stevia and opt for a sugar alcohol instead. This is where things tend to get a little tricky. 2. Since so many products on the shelf contain sugar alcohols, unless you don’t consume them at all, or you bake and cook all your own foods, you might be up for a challenge. You see, if you’re diabetic and trying to lose weight, you need to avoid overconsumption — espe-
cially if you enjoy the sugar alcohols with a higher caloric value, which I mentioned above. Sorbitol, for example, is a very common sugar alcohol used in sugar-free baked goods like muffins, cookies, pastries, etc. Since it happens to have the highest caloric value, it will also spike your glucose levels (much less than sugar, however) — especially if you eat “sugarfree” products on a regular basis. I
have had many instances of people struggling with weight loss, complaining that they only use sugarfree foods. And the problem was exactly that — they were consuming way too many of these sugar alcohols and at the end of the day, they simply weren’t losing weight. My suggestion? Remember that balance is key. If you do consume sugar alcohols, do so in moderation.

HALACHOS AND MINHAGIM OF PURIM BY REBBETZIN Y. WEISSMANDL
SHABBOS ZACHOR • The Shabbos before Purim is called Shabbos Zachor. • It is a mitzvah d’Oraisa to lein Parshas Zachor once a year, because we are obligated in regards to “zechiras mechiyas Amalek” (remembering what the Amalekites did to us). This is done on the Shabbos before Purim, in order to link the elimination of Amalek to the elimination of Haman, who was Amalek’s descendant. • During the reading of of Parshas Zachor one must have in mind to fulfill the mitzvah of zechiras mechiyas Amalek. • It is accepted that women should try and be yotzei this mitzvah by hearing the reading of this parsha from a sefer Torah.
MACHATZIS HASHEKEL • It is a minhag al pi halacha to give three coins to tzedaka before mincha on erev Purim, as a zecher of the machatzis hashekel that was given at the time of the Bais Hamikdash. Preferably, the coin should be named as half of a currency, i.e. a half dollar. • The minhag is to give a half a shekel for each family member, including small children. • There are some who are noheg to donate machatzis hashekel again on Purim morning before davening.
64 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 8, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
THE FOUR MITZVOS There are four mitzvos of Purim. 1. Hearing the Megillah 2. Matanos l’evyonim (giving gifts of money to the poor) 3. Mishloach manos 4. Seudos Purim
HEARING THE MEGILLAH • Hearing the Megillah is the primary mitzvah of the day. The Megillah is read twice: once on the first night of Purim and once in the morning. One must take care not to miss hearing even one letter of the reading of the Megillah. If one is afraid one won’t hear every word, then one can quietly mouth along the words. • If one mouths the words, and then misses a word, one should continue mouthing the words until one catches up to the baal koreh. • When saying the brachos, the baal koreh and the listeners must stand. The listeners may be seated during the leining itself. • Before leining the Megillah, the baal koreh says three brachos which are: 1. Al Mikrah Megillah 2. She’asa Nissim 3. Shehecheyanu • All three brachos are said before both the evening and morning readings. • In the morning, during the bracha of Shehecheyanu, one should have in mind to be mekayim the mitzvos of the
day: matanos l’evyonim, mishloach manos and eating the Purim seudah. • A woman who cannot attend shul should make sure to have someone who knows how to lein properly, in accordance with halacha, lein for her.
his availus. An avel may give matanos l’evyonim with no limitations. • It is better to donate more to the poor than to have an elaborate Purim feast or to send expensive gifts of food to friends.
MISHLOACH MANOS
THE PURIM SEUDAH
• Women are mechuyav in the mitzvah of mishloach manos, performed by giving two kinds of ready-to-eat foods to at least one woman. One is not yotzei with giving mishloach manos before the morning reading of the Megillah. • One should not send mishloach manos to an avel (mourner) r”l, but may send to the family of an mourner. • An avel is mechuyav to send mishloach manos to at least one person, and he is allowed to send to the important people to whom he would usually send. • A woman is not permitted to send mishloach manos to a man. Likewise, a man is not permitted to send mishloach manos to a woman.
• It is a chiyuv to eat a seudah on Purim. The minhag is to eat a second seudah that extends into the night.
MATANOS L’EVYONIM • One must give money to two poor people. The mitzvah is to give to the aniyim (poor people) of one’s own town. (i.e Kupath Ezra). The money must be handed over to the aniyim on Purim day. • One may give matanos l’evyonim to a needy avel with no limitations due to
AL HANISSIM • We say Al Hanissim in Shemoneh Esrei in the evening, morning and afternoon of Purim. • If one forgets to say Al Hanissim in its proper sequence, and then realizes that he forgot, he must go back and say it as long as he has not already pronounced the shem Hashem at the end of the brachah of “Hatov shimcha no’eh l’hodos.” After that point in the tefillah, he should not return to it, but rather say it before “Elokai netzor leshoni.” • During bentching, Al Hanissim should be recited before the words “ve’al hakol.” If one forgets to say it there, and if one has already pronounced the shem Hashem, one should not return to it. However, before the words “Harachaman Hu yezakeinu,” one should say: “הרחמן הוא יעשה לנו ניסים ונפלאות כמו
שעשה לאבותינו בימים ההם בזמן הזה בימי מרדכי ואסתר.”

Law Will Require Rockland Pharmacies to Take Back Unused Prescription Medications (County Executive Ed Day’s Office) SAFE DISPOSAL OF prescription drugs is about to become significantly easier for Rockland County residents as a new bill signed into law last week will require county pharmacies to take back unused medications. The law will only require pharmacies with three or more locations in Rockland County to accept medicines for disposal. Affected pharmacies are required to have a plan of action to meet the new requirements on file with the county by April 1st. “We want to make it as easy as possible for Rockland residents to get rid of unused prescription medication
in a safe and responsible way,” said Day. “This law will help them do that.” Finding ways to safely discard extra medicines has been an ongoing problem, with environmentalists raising concerns that throwing them into the trash or flushing them through the plumbing system will have adverse effects on local water supplies. Community “take back programs” have long been touted by the FDA as the best way to dispose of expired or unused medicines.
Much Needed Pothole Repairs Coming (The Journal News) IF YOU DROVE around the area running your Purim errands you are no doubt aware that despite the unusually warm winter, potholes are everywhere. Ramapo highway crews have begun using an asphalt recycler this year, a move that is allowing the department to save time and money. Highway superintendent Tony Sharan estimated that with the new machinery, the cost of pothole repair will decline from the $30,000 annually spent in previous years to just $20,000. “It’s a great investment for us and we’re going to save a lot of money,” said Sharan. Journal News readers ranked Route 59 in Monsey
and Route 202 in both Pomona and Suffern as among the most pothole-ridden thoroughfares in the county. How to get reimbursed for pothole damage to your vehicle? Prior notification of an existing pothole is typically required for the state or a local municipality to accept responsibility for pothole damage, with claims capped at $5,000 on state roads. Drivers who sustain potholerelated damages and are hoping to be reimbursed are encouraged to file a police report, take pictures of the damage to their vehicle and keep all estimates and receipts from mechanics.
Thieves Stealing Catalytic Converts in Ramapo (Ramapo Police Department) FAST-MOVING THIEVES armed with hand tools have been targeting cars in the Ramapo area, sliding under vehicles and removing their catalytic converters with battery powered reciprocating saws, reported the Ramapo Police Department. Part of a car’s exhaust system, catalytic converters contain precious metals including platinum, rhodium and palladium and can typically bring $50 to $75 each at scrap yards. Residents are advised to either garage their cars or park in well-lit areas in order to prevent their cars from
70 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 8, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
being targeted by would-be thieves. Similar thefts have been reported in Clarkstown, according to the Hudson Valley News Network. Thieves have been favoring SUVs and pickup trucks which typically sit higher than cars, allowing them to get in and out quickly without having to jack up the vehicle to access its underside. Because they can be removed in less than one minute, several states have already enacted laws that prohibit salvage yards from buying catalytic converters.

Forward
march Chapter One By: Chany G. Rosengarten
Intro Forward march. Forward. March. Forward. One foot. One foot. Just one more time, one more time, forward. Forward. Because life. Because put one foot in front of the other. We must move forward. And at the end of the line... when all but they had fallen away, the Nazis ran. Like the scared, boneless shafts that they were, fleeing to preserve what they had thrown away, life. Though this time, their own. And they, the tenacious ones, the miraculous ones, the ones still holding on to the angel on all sides that breathed, dared them, “Live. March forward. Live. One foot, just once. Once. One more time,” they, they were released. Into freedom now. Open freedom, terrible freedom. Empty freedom. Desperate, dangerous freedom. Because bondage defines, and freedom obliges. Freedom demands that it be fought for, and built, while bondage is a submissive task. Forward march. One foot in front of the other. Because we move forward.

A BABY’S CRY. “Mazel tov!” “Mazel tov!” His wife’s face fluid and alight with an ethereal shine he had never seen on her. Was it Life, finally? Was Henya allowing herself, for the first time, to feel, to be alive? Mazel tov to her, as well. For in having a child, a woman births a mother. “Mazel tov!” “May we raise him,” Yosef Yitzchok choked, the tears running and disappearing into his beard, “together. To nachas and pride. To long life, to a good life. May he never know…” “Amen.” Yosef Yitzchok looked at the baby’s tiny, perfectly formed ankles and felt protectiveness he had felt when he was left holding the hands of his younger brother, Eli. But a hand was not enough. Hands grasping each other, they weren’t enough, and the boy was taken… A deep anxiety. I don’t want to leave the baby here, in the hospital, in a ward of unknowns. I want him home. But home had its own set of worries. Oh, parenthood. To love one is to open up to lose one. It hurt in his chest. What will we call him? he wondered, thinking through all of the names. All the loved ones. Eli. Yankel. Faivel. Motte. Tzvi. Her father. Wouldn’t she want the naming? Of course she did. Of course. And he… hadn’t thought of it. For a second. For the second when he transitioned into a parent, and missing his own people hurt so much it clouded him. How he missed Tatte. How he missed

Forward him. The guilt. The horror. So many feelings. And he had only now become a father. The baby was so small. His wife was resting. The nurses formed a protective fence, leaving him out. Rationally, there was nothing for him to do here. He should leave. But he could wait out here, all day. He could… protect. Not forsake. He could protect! Normally, fathers just leave the baby in good hands and go. He’d been in here such a long time, and it was time to tell everyone — whom? Whom to tell? His brothers. Soul survivors. The shtiebel. He could leave the baby behind. It would be good. It was all good. A Yid must face forward. “I will be back. Rest, my dear ones,” he said. But he said it to himself.

along the edges of the baby’s small, soft-brimmed hat, still pulled tightly onto the child’s head. “It’s okay, nothing happened,” Sura said. She took the child, and, with another firm arm, helped Bianca up. Bianca could feel the cuts in the flesh of this large woman who held her hand, small deep grooves between her thumb and her pointer, hardened with calluses, the rest of her fingers short, covered in unyielding skin. She got up. Despite the onlookers, despite the fall. Or maybe because of it. She felt an anger flushing at her sides, thankful now for the netting on her hat, and the deep maroon color on her cheeks. One shoe she needed to retrieve, but Sura had already set it down next to her. One side of her coat, edged with leather and lace, soaked with the brown water of the gutter, last night’s rain. Sura said, “I’m sorry for startling you.” “Hand me the baby.” Sura handed her back the baby but made sure to walk terribly close by. One is too many to lose. The baby’s white encasement had only ignorable spritzes of gray mud. The woman, however, the one holding him, was undone. No time to fix herself; holding a baby made that impossible. They were here. In the shul. The scent was the same. As in der heim, understandably. Take a room, fill it with the sacred texts that had somehow survived a nation’s massacre, not only today’s, but in Spain, in France, in Italy. Fill it with wooden benches and weeping Jews and camaraderie, and sweaty, black-at-the-neck talleisim, and it always smelled the same. Even in America, in a Williamsburg besmirched by soot, filth, smog and the dirty heads of many aspiring people. A shul, still. The baby was passed to the men, Bianca extending her now

besmirched gloves to her husband Yaacov. “Let their own hands be filled with joy and children,” Sura whispered, prayed. Bianca’s husband looked at her with his coal black eyes, but said nothing, as he always did when deep emotion cut through him. He took the child — wordlessly, effortlessly, as if the new and fragile child were a tray of cake — and carried it over to the knot of men. No patriarch of the family here. The father had no father. No brothers, brothers-in-law, those extra selves. A simchah, alone. And without celebrants, what is joy if it unable to be shared? But they had each other. “And his name in Israel will be called…” Thick, red eyebrows lifted exponentially, toward the father, and the father, torn, torn between names and loyalties and what dead people would have wanted and what he wanted today, and what his wife wanted. Torn. Now the red eyebrows were hidden under a satin sash of the tallis. Some looked on. Others looked away. When he had first thought to broach the subject No patriarch of the with Henya, the baby had been but family here. The fa- a few hours old, and the small mirther had no father. acle between them yelped, cried, and he said, “How will we name him?” But she’d been too tired and they’d never properly discussed it. He saw himself, in a desolate gate. His father’s face. For the last time, those mischievous, brown eyes, a puppy smile. Tell me this is a joke. It wasn’t. Yosef Yitzchok was sent into life, into misery. His father was sent into the Next World. His father’s name was Faivel. “I will remember you. I will always remember you and carry you in my world,” Yosef Yitzchok whispered. Faivel. Henya had come home from the hospital today. She looked… battle worn. She spoke softly and cried when she came home. She looked into the baby’s eyes. In her heart, the baby was Mendel. Mendel. Faivel. My father. Faivel. I will carry you in life as you carry me in the Upper Worlds. Mendel. Faivel. Faivel. “Mendel… um… Faivel… um…” A chin extended far out from the protective halo of the tallis. “What did you say?” To be continued... Traditional
Purim Foods Today, with the high-speed changing food styles, it’s beautiful and comforting to be firmly connected and rooted to our previous generations through preparing and serving a menu handed to us from our ancestors. These traditional foods presumably originate from European countries, but has spread into many different crowds as well. As we longingly prepare for this elevated day, it’s an opportune time to be mispallel to be zoche to impart the pure values of the past into the hearts of our future generations with simcha.
Although, these recipes are a bit late for the plan-ahead balabusta, all of these recipes are used in Tishrei. Clip to enjoy the recipes then.

KREPLACH
Somehow, I find that kreplach tend to be a shared food. Most people who take the time to prepare this delicacy make an abundance and send to family and friends. It’s a perfect old-fashioned appreciated addition to mishloach manos that will surely be enjoyed by a neighbor or friend at the Purim seudah.
DOUGH
FILLING
2 c. flour
1 onion
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. salt
4 T. oil
¼ tsp. black pepper
3 T. oil
1 cup cooked or baked chicken, finely cubed
1 T. bread crumbs
2 egg yolks ½ cup water 1 ½ tsp. baking powder
DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine flour, salt and oil. 2. In a separate cup, beat eggs, water and baking powder. Add to flour mixture and knead by hand into a smooth dough.
DIRECTIONS: 1. On a floured surface, roll out the dough thinly. Cut into 4-inch squares. 2. Put 1 tsp. of chicken mixture in the center of each square. 3. Fold over to form a triangle. Seal by crimping with the tines of a fork, making sure it seals all around. 4. Fill a six-quart pot about two-thirds with water, and bring water to a boil. Add a T. oil and ½ tsp. salt. Drop the kreplach into the boiling water. Once they float to the surface, cook for an additional five to ten minutes.
These kreplach are traditionally served in a bowl of chicken soup.

DOUGH 7 cups flour 3 eggs 7 egg yolks 1 cup oil ¼ cup light colored wine ¾ cup water ¾ T. dry yeast Pinch of salt 1 tsp. baking powder 2 T. honey 3 heaping T. sugar Juice of one lemon
DIRECTIONS: 1. Knead all ingredients to form dough and set aside.
On Simchas Torah and Purim, our family gets treated to this delectable pastry, which my mother meticulously prepares with heart and soul. This treat, with its perfect blend of flavors, is an unsurpassed homemade dessert no bakery can compete with. Kindel is usually filled exclusively with walnuts, but this nut combination is much more flavorful and does not have a bitter aftertaste. Yields 5 rolls
FILLING - PART 1 ⅓ c. egg white ⅓ cup honey ⅓ cup oil
DIRECTIONS: 1. Mix well.
FILLING - PART 2 1 pound ground walnuts 1 pound ground filberts ½ pound chopped almonds, roasted (Or a 2.5 pound nut combination of your choice) 2.5 cups sugar 1 whole lemon 2 T. vanilla sugar 6 oz. craisins
DIRECTIONS: 1. Peel off or scrape very outer edge of lemon, using fine peeler or paring knife. Cut into eighths. Remove pits. And place in freezer for approximately ½ hour. 2. Place in food processor and blend with S blade until fine consistency is achieved. 3. Mix with rest of filling ingredients, besides for craisins.

KINDEL
ASSEMBLY 1. Preheat oven to 325°. 2. Weigh dough and filling and divide into 5 equal parts. 3. Roll each part of the dough into a thin rectangle. 4. Smear egg-honey mixture over dough. 5. Spread nut filling over smeared dough. 6. Distribute a scarce handful of craisins over filling. 7. Roll up tightly and place up to three logs per baking sheet. Roll might lose its shape during transfer. Using your hands, gently reshape into a nice straight log. 8. Using a sharp knife dipped into some flour, slit slightly angled cuts at ½ inch intervals, cutting approximately through a third of the depth.
EGG WASH 1. Brush with egg yolks. 2. Place in oven. 3. Bake for approximately 20 minutes.
HONEY WASH This gives the kindel both a sweet taste and a lacquered look. ⅓ cup honey mixed with ¼ cup water 1. Remove from oven and smear with honey wash. 2. Bake another 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

ONION WRAPS
STUFFED ONION
5 large Spanish, white or Vidalia onions
DIRECTIONS:
Some of you may think that the heading is a typo and expect to find stuffed cabbage instead, but no, both in der alte heim and today, people who refrain from eating foods prone to infestation replaced the wrapping of their holeptzes with onion. In this flavorful recipe, I have incorporated kohlrabi and turnip into the sauce to impart a cabbage-like taste. It has taken years of tweaking and perfecting, and by now, I can say that although it’s a dish of its own class, you’ll feel great serving this version of gefilte kraut, or however you call it.
1. Cut off top and bottom of each onion and peel. 2. Cook whole in a wide pot of water for ½ hour. Allow to cool slightly. 3. Cut halfway through all layers, until the center. Remove each layer and rinse thoroughly.
FILLING 1 small onion
½ cup water
2 garlic cloves
¼ cup oil
3 T. oil
1 tsp. salt
2 lb. chopped chicken, dark turkey or beef
2 T. sugar ¼ tsp. pepper
⅓ cup white rice, soaked in 1 cup hot water for 1 hour
2 egg yolks 2 T. tomato paste
DIRECTIONS: 1. Saute onion and garlic in 3 T. oil. 2. Drain rice and combine all ingredients. Set aside
SAUCE 1 onion, chopped 2 kohlrabi, shredded 1 large turnip, shredded
2 T. has been removed for filling) 4 cups water 6 T. sugar
¼ cup oil
1 ½ T. salt
15 oz. tomato paste (of which
1/5 tsp. sour salt 3 bay leaves
DIRECTIONS: 1. Saute onion, kohlrabi and turnip in the oil. 2. Combine tomato paste with water and add to pot. Add spices and bring to a boil. 3. Fill each onion skin with approximately 1 heaping T. of meat mixture and roll up. Ends will be exposed, but they will not leak. Decrease the amount of filling as you get to the inner layers of the onion. 4. Place them into the boiling sauce and allow to cook for three or more hours on a small to medium flame.

WHO DOESN’T GET THE PICTURE
QUESTION: When my child reads a story he picks up on every little detail, but somehow misses out on seeing the whole picture. He doesn’t combine all of the things he’s reading to understand the whys and whats of the story, and certainly not the takeaway message. He really misses out on the story as a whole and can’t seem to link together all of what he’d read. Why is that? What can we do about that? DOV LICHTER, CO-FOUNDER OF KIDS FIRST RESPONDS: So here’s the scoop: Smart kids, brilliant kids, average kids — even kids who have a hard time keeping up with mainstream schooling — can learn, but each has his own unique way of learning. If your child is having trouble grasping what he’s being taught, it may be the method of teaching that’s causing the difficulties. It’s important to know that every person processes information in different ways, in manners corresponding to his individual personality and cognitive capabilities. Not every person reads a book and gains a world of new information, because perhaps, that information just didn’t find its way into his brain. It just wasn’t absorbed. Our job as parents and educators is to help children learn in the way that works for them. If we want learning to actually happen, we have to make sure that the information that we are trying to teach a child is actually being absorbed by the child. So how do we do that? First, we have to recognize what type of learner your child is. There are several different types. The ones you’ve probably heard of are listed below: 96 / THE MONSEY VIEW
VISUAL LEARNERS learn best by seeing what they are supposed to be learning. For some, that means graphics — like charts, maps and diagrams — help them conceptualize the information. Others need to see words on paper, with most of the learning and grasping of concepts occurring through their visual channel. AUDITORY LEARNERS absorb and process information best by hearing. These kids are the ones who benefit most from discussions, lectures, tapes and songs used as learning tools. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNERS learn best by relating new material to something they’ve already experienced. Talking about past events and giving examples of real-life experiences to illustrate new concepts help these kids grasp what they’re being taught. What most people don’t know is that even within the different learning types, there are further distinctions. How does your child organize the information he’s absorbing? Is your child a spatial organizer or sequential organizer? SPATIAL ORGANIZERS absorb large amounts of information very quickly, but miss out on the nuts and bolts that hold that information together. They naturally see the forest and not the trees. Details are not important to these learners, and may even confuse them. SEQUENTIAL ORGANIZERS are the opposite of spatial organizers, and although a full assessment is required to correctly determine a child’s learning style, I highly suspect your son is a sequential organizer. These kids need to work their way through information, one piece of information and one logical step at a time. They often zone in, like your son, on details, but are unable to easily see the bigger picture. So how can you help a sequential organizer, like your son appears to be? You can help him by collecting all of those details he noticed, and depending on whether he is an auditory, visual or experiential learner, help him to logically order the information to create a sum total that forms the bigger picture. Visual learners who are also sequential organizers can benefit from graphs or pictures
of collected details, or a drawn box of information with all of the details penciled inside. Auditory learners can process that same information by having it verbally explained to them in a logical, ordered manner, and experiential learners can perhaps re-enact the scenario to experience the bigger picture. It’s quite fascinating to watch the way children process information. Just try this simple test to see it live: Hand your child a paper and pencil and ask them to prepare the instructions for getting from your house to a location he or she knows, like your family’s shul. Some kids will write step-by-step instructions, while others may draw a map. Some kids might even jump up and start using their hands and bodies to show you how to get there! However your child learns, that’s okay. That’s the way he should be learning if we want him to enjoy and be successful in learning. Some kids just need modifications in the way they are being taught! There is another aspect to take into consideration with sequential organizers: These kids can sometimes be saddled with labels like “learning disabled” when really, if teaching were to happen in the way they learn best, they’d be at the top of the class! Sequential organizers can struggle for years seeing only details but not the full picture. This can happen not just in the world of learning, but in general life as well. A sequential organizer can become frustrated, jealous or angry when they see events in life in great detail without understanding the full picture. But we — as parents, teachers and therapists who care — can help our kids to effectively process and relate to the world around them. By examining our kids’ personality traits, understanding their learning styles, and helping them to connect to (and believe in!) their skills, we can help them see the bigger picture, no matter their learning style. Your child can succeed. Together, we can help him. Call Kids First to learn more about learning more! Please note: Names and identifying details have been changed to protect our clients’ privacy.

Purim: a time of joy and jubilation, social connection and ultimately, many surprises. From the identities of masked children being revealed to miracles experienced at the last possible moment, Purim is a time of the unexpected, in which anything can happen. How do you prepare for that? More importantly, how do you prepare your bochurim for that — especially when they’ll be heading out with a group full of their enthusiastic peers? The exhilaration of youth, the spontaneity of the day, and the energy of a teenage boy all combine to create potential pitfalls — or alternatively — the chance to spiritually soar. Local Monsey experts weigh in with their tips on helping your bochur make the most out of this auspicious time while hopping all around town.

THE MECHANECH’S POINT OF VIEW Rabbi Shraga Gold, co-founder of Kids First and experienced mechanech, weighs in on how to prepare bochurim for Purim.
What kinds of things do you suggest telling bochurim to prepare them for a Purim spent collecting with friends and classmates? It’s important to realize that the joyful atmosphere of Purim many times gives bochurim the push they need to reach a higher madrega, lifting them to better places. The highs of Purim often transfer into their learning and Yiddishkeit, helping them to shteig better in the following days. That being said, they need to know that Purim is not an excuse to shirk personal liability and responsibility. It is an incredible opportunity for bochurim to establish themselves as careful teens with sincere aspirations. It is a time for joy — and self-control.
How far in advance do you advise speaking to the boys about what is expected of them on Purim when going out with a group? I like to speak to them a week before Purim, so that they can work out their schedule and they won’t need to change any plans they’ve already made, and also so that they are clear regarding what is expected of them. If they have any questions, there will be time to address it.
Should a curfew be set? Having a time frame on Purim is important; it helps bochurim structure their day so that they make time to learn and fulfill the chiyuv of limud Torah and, of course, eat the seudah. It keeps the day from being hefker. By nature, Purim is less restrictive and while a curfew has to be set, you can allow yourself to be more laid back in regards to timing. Purim only comes once a year. Of course, this doesn’t mean that bochurim should be playing music late into the early a.m. hours; they must have respect for the rest of humanity that, perhaps, do not share their enthusiasm for a late night.
Should bochurim be required to call home? How often? I advise bochurim to call home at least once during the day so that they maintain a sense of responsibility. It keeps them grounded and helps them to not do something they may regret. It also makes their mothers worry less!
Is it important to have a chaperone on the trips? It is definitely preferable to have an adult from the yeshiva accompany the bochurim, but many times this isn’t doable, since yeshiva staff members need time to be with their own families and focus on their own simchas yom tov. If the yeshiva doesn’t appoint someone to go along with the bochurim, they’ll typically maintain contact via phone with the bochurim throughout the day, constantly following up with them, and checking to make sure that all is well. That being said, this only encompasses groups that are formed by your son’s yeshiva. Even private groups with a mashgiach can be problematic, since it can be very hard to be sure that the bochurim are on the same level as your son.
Do you tell them how to behave in houses where they go collecting? Of course, it is very important when speaking to bochurim before Purim to stress that it’s vital for them

HATZOLAH’S POINT OF VIEW
A veteran member of Rockland County Hatzolah addresses the issue of safety when the boys are on the go.
When bochurim go out collecting as a group, do you find that there is an increased risk of something dangerous happening? Baruch Hashem, we haven’t seen that there are many significant dangers that occur every year when bochurim are out collecting. We really don’t get calls regarding the groups, specifically. Drinking, yes, but that usually happens later in the day, many times after the boys have gone home.
What about the mobiles or cars? Do they present any safety issues when packed with rowdy teens? Years ago, when people used to rent trucks for the bochurim, we had calls about boys falling out of moving trucks and getting hurt. Since those times, though, safety has improved, baruch Hashem. We don’t really see issues with mobiles and party buses.
What can we tell bochurim to make their Purim safer? We just have to remind them to act appropriately, but remember that boys will boys. Make sure they have supervision.
What can parents or yeshivos do to make Purim safer for their teens? Don’t leave alcohol lying out where groups can help themselves. To you it may seem like only one cup of alcohol, but for a bochur, it may be his fifth! Drinking is never a joke. It is dangerous and people are hospitalized every year. Also, make sure that the driver and chaperone stay sober; they can’t do their jobs safely when drunk.
to behave as mentchen and to be calm even though it’s a day of simcha. They can be happy and lebidig without yelling, being overly wild and causing damage. We remind them to respect people and property. Really, these are the things we work to instill in bochurim all year long!
What else can you share? Parents often worry, but when your son is well-prepared and the group is done the right way, it is a special opportunity for a bochur to extend himself beyond the routine of daily life, putting into action the middos he’s worked on. It is a tremendous chance for growth, both in the social realm as they have time to spend with friends, and in the spiritual realm as well, as they learn to behave in manner fitting of a budding talmid chacham. It is important in instill in these boys that they can be teenagers, they can have fun — but they must do it in a Yiddishe manner.

THE MOTHER’S POINT OF VIEW
Mrs. C. Schwartz, mother of eight boys, offers pearls of wisdom gained through years of mothering.
What do you tell a bochur before Purim to prepare him for collecting with a group? Honestly, I don’t feel that it’s right to send out bochurim in groups to collect. But this is the way mosdos run, so I have to let them go. I make sure that my bochurim know it’s hard for me, that I really don’t feel comfortable signing their permission slips. When I do sign, I tell my boys that just as I’m signing for them, they have to sign a tzetl for me, which includes their commitment to the following: • Absolutely no drinking! It’s totally off limits, even a sip. • To always keep up with the group. I don’t want them wandering off, getting separated and ending up who-knows-where. • To be mentchlich! Bochurim need to be reminded that they need to conduct themselves with personal dignity and respect for homeowners, their peers and even the driver of the car or mobile. I specifically tell them to not be too wild while traveling, since I’ve heard stories of car accidents caused by the boys being too rowdy. When my bochurim sign their tzetl, it adds a bit of sobriety to a day that that is full of energy. It’s easy to get lost in the music and infectious joy, but knowing that they’ve committed to certain things give them a sense of achrayus. At that point, they are able to responsibly enjoy the experience.
What do you say about the lateness of the hour? Your order is just a phone call away!

There’s not much choice about how late the night will run since the mosad plans out the collecting route, but a parent must, must, must be up until the child comes home! Make sure that your bochur sees that you are waiting for him. Tell him beforehand that you will be waiting up for him; not only does it make him feel cared for, it also gives another layer of responsibility to the night.
What are some other tips you can share with parents? Find out who the chaperone will be. Get a number for that person and check in as needed. You can also give your son a realistic timespan in which you expect him to call you to check in, realizing that he may not always be near a phone that he can use.

THE BAAL HABUS(TER)’S POINT OF VIEW
P. Samuels shares how she hosts the groups that come collecting
Do you do anything special to prepare for the groups of bochurim who visit your home? I am not an official “address” like one of my wealthy friends, where groups of bochurim and yungerleit actually have to stand outside in a long line, waiting for a chance to get in for a donation. However, I do enjoy and welcome the groups who come my way. First of all, all of my grandsons, and some of my sons who work in yeshivos, put my address on a must-visit list. We, as a family, enjoy the spirit that they add to our Purim seudah and we try to host them nicely. For the bochurim, I try to have easy-to-eat foods; not anything that would require using a knife. Usually, I offer something like pickled cold meats, knishes, hamentashen and the perennial favorite: potato kugel. I have had groups that were in such a rush to reach their next address that they couldn’t be bothered to eat. Other times, I saw that these kids were really hungry and they devoured whatever was put in front of them. My table usually has various pastries and cookies which came in the mishloach manos and I graciously invite the boys to help themselves. I do not mind preparing extra food and I don’t get upset if one particular Purim most of the groups do not want to eat. There’s always the Shushan Purim seudah, the greatest way to deal with Purim leftovers.
What about drinking? Do you look the other way if bochurim help themselves? Everyone asks that question, if we allow bochurim to drink. Of course we do, as much as they want! As long as the drink is water, soda or seltzer. I used to prepare what is considered by my grandchildren to be a special “Bubby treat”: sparkling grape juice. I find, however, that these teens are thirsty for a cold, refreshing cup of water or seltzer, and the sparkling grape juice doesn’t usually appeal to them.
How do you manage the noise and energy level? Do you let them be as boisterous as they want? My husband is very sensitive to loud noise. If the group is from my grandson’s class, he makes sure to tell the “musician” as he is setting up to lower the volume on the speakers, the implication being that bearable music instead of thunderous noise will result in a larger donation. Other groups are also asked nicely and they usually comply. Some groups have recently added flashing lights to their boom-boxes. It adds excitement — if it is not overdone. I don’t have to worry about them breaking anything, because my house is a home where children are more important than fragile tchotchkes, so there’s never anything breakable around.
Do the women and kids get to enjoy the action? The women and girls usually squeeze into a corner, to be out of the way yet enjoy the fun. Some of the younger ones stand on the couch. It’s not a white, silk sofa. The boys (and sometimes the littlest girls) join their slightly inebriated fathers and uncles in a lively dance with the guests.
Anything else you can add as a hostess? This year I thought of a new amenity that I might offer the young men: I will let the bochurim know that everyone is free to use my phone to call home. My children and grandchildren will probably cringe at the very idea, (“Ma, you’re embarrassing us...”) but I, having been there, worrying about my children who were out on Purim, think of the parents who will appreciate hearing their son’s voice.

THE DRAMATIC NEWS SENT shock waves throughout the Empire. (Not the Persian one; we’ll get there later.) The privileged nephew of the Roman Emperor had done the unthinkable and joined the Jews. The Jews! That downtrodden remnant of a nation, so recently crushed by mighty Rome. The cheek of it! Legionnaires were swiftly despatched to bring the upstart home and knock some sense into him. Mysteriously, the proud soldiers did not return — Onkelos had succeeded in converting them! A further band was despatched, under strict orders not to talk to the renegade. Again, the unthinkable happened. A third band was sent, under orders not to converse in any way. As they were taking Onkelos out of his house, he placed his hand on the mezuzah — and then laughed. This was too much for the curious soldiers, who demanded to know what it was that he found so funny. This is what he told them: “The way of the world is that a human king sits inside his palace, while his servants stand guard outside. With HaKadosh Baruch Hu, His servants dwell inside (in their homes), and He guards them from outside…” By demonstrating his conviction that Hashem alone would decide his fate, Onkelos merited His protection, which manifested itself

mitzvos. One mitzvah that we have on all other Yomim Tovim (Yomim Noraim being the exception) is reciting Hallel. On Purim, Hallel is noticeably absent. The Gemara (Megillah 14a) gives several explanations for this, one of which is the opinion of Rav Nachman, that “the reading of the Megillah is itself Hallel.” The reading of Megillas Esther attests to our appreciation of Hashem’s guidance of worldly events, even in situations when Don’t just read what’s written to all appearances, His is anywhere here. As we all lel of revealing Hashem’s hidden know, Purim is a day with many Presence. This Hallel is generated the outside of the door, explains the Chasam Sofer. Why on the outside? To teach that in times of exile, Hashem, as it were, stands guard on the outside. His Shechinah — His Presence is with us at all times. He alone determines our destiny, guaranteeing the eternity of our nation. This is the message of the mezuzah, but it was never shown in action – until the events of the Purim mir-

when we read between the lines, probing beneath the surface of mundane events; revealing Hashem’s presence and His love for His People. Maybe that is the significance of sirtut, the etching of lines, which cut below the surface, and are present between every line of every kosher megillah. The etched-in line cries out to the reader and to the listener: Don’t just read what’s written here. Scratch the surface and detect Hashem’s Presence — in the events written here, and in your own life. This is where the message of the mezuzah is shown in action in Megillas Esther. When it seems that Hashem’s Presence is far away, that is when He is closest at hand. Now He is the Guard, and it is Am Yisroel whom He is guarding. The Maharal writes that the rule of Achashverosh and Haman was a “hester besoch hester” — a double concealment of Hashem’s presence. The entire Jewish People was under the rule of one unpredictable despot. And then his fanatically Jew-hating cohort, Haman, gained control. As a nation we have never, before or since, been under such a threat of total annihilation, chas v’shalom. It was precisely then that Hashem taught us the timeless message of Purim. When we lein the Megillah, we internalize that message, and our Hallel ascends straight to Shamayim.

IF YOU GREW UP IN THE CITY like I did, Purim probably involved a lot of walking to deliver mishloach manos to your friends and neighbors. But for Monsey dwellers, more often than not, getting from Point A to Point B usually involves some kind of vehicular transportation, particularly on Purim. Over the years I have found myself wondering if we should stop dreaming up cute costume ideas for our kids and, instead, find creative ways to dress up our cars, given just how much of Purim is spent driving around town. And with the explosive growth of our town, baruch Hashem, the number of vehicles on the road on Purim has only increased, making local traffic as much a part of the day as leining the Megillah and giving matanos l’evyonim. Police will be out in force on Purim to manage traffic and enforce compliance, with tow trucks stationed in the Monsey area to remove vehicles that are illegally parked. While Purim is all about simcha, safety is of paramount importance, and Yossi Margaretten of Chaverim of Rockland noted that extra vigilance is crucial to ensuring that the day goes smoothly. Drinking wine may be part of Purim celebrations, but drinking and driving do not mix, warned Margaretten. “A car can be a deadly weapon,” said Margaretten. “If you have anything to drink, do not drive at all, even if you are just running out to deliver mishloach manos to someone who lives nearby.” Children getting swept up in the excitement of Purim may forget basic safety rules, so drivers are to be extremely cautious for youngsters darting out between cars and walking in the street. Motorists are also encouraged to move aside if they see any emergency vehicles, allowing them to pass. “We have had a couple of stories in the past where Hatzolah members going out on a call couldn’t get through,” said Margaretten. The hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. are typically the busiest times of day, so those looking to beat the traffic are advised to take advantage of the early morning and late afternoon hours. Finding ways to manage Purim traffic is essential, and this year, the Ramapo Police Department and Chaverim of Rockland have teamed in an effort to keep things flowing smoothly, with the following changes to be in effect on Purim:

ONE-WAY ROADWAYS Multiple streets in Monsey and Spring Valley will be changed to one-way-only on Purim, including: » Rita Avenue, Ida Road, Ronald Drive and Nancy Lane, which will be open only to traffic heading from Route 306 towards Spring Valley. » From Ronald Drive, traffic on Francis Place will only be allowed heading west towards Ida Lane. » Walter Drive will be one way towards Edwin Lane. » Edwin Drive will be one way towards Maple Leaf Road. » Maple Leaf Road will be one way toward Route 306. » Park Lane, Adar Court and Decatur Avenue will be open only to northbound traffic towards West Central Avenue. » Herrick Avenue will be open only to southbound traffic heading towards Maple Avenue. » Drivers heading from the Dr. Frank/Charles/ Morris Area towards Route 306 are advised to take Yale Drive to Jill Lane to Ralph Boulevard. NO RIGHT TURNS » From Jill Lane onto Rita Avenue » From Maple Avenue onto Herrick Avenue NO LEFT TURNS » From Sunrise Drive onto Park Lane » From Maple Avenue to Decatur Avenue » No entrance from Ida Road onto Francis Place PARKING » Park on only one side of the street to avoid blocking the flow of traffic » Park in driveways whenever possible » No-parking signs will be placed in high traffic areas. Parking in those areas, even for a short amount of time, may result in your car being ticketed and towed. CAUTION WHEN HOSTING Finally, Margaretten cautioned residents to be careful about who they let into their home on Purim, noting that in the past there have been costumed individuals posing as collectors who were actually thieves. “Part of the group was singing and dancing in the dining room with the homeowner while the rest snuck off to the bedroom to steal whatever they could get their hands on,” said Margaretten. “Whether you are on the road or in your house, we are asking everyone to make safety a priority so that everyone can enjoy a happy Purim.” Sandy Eller is a freelance writer who writes for numerous websites, newspapers, magazines and many private clients. WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? It’s 100% natural, contains absolutely no fat and comes from sugar cane. It grows in stalks (like corn) in sugar cane fields and from beets that grow underground. Sugar cane is delicious to suck on, even when it is raw! The only taste humans are born liking is sweetness. In fact, newborn babies love sugar! Try sugar water when your baby fusses. The words sugar and sure are the only two in the English language spelled with an “su” and pronounced “sh.” SUGAR SHOCKERS: 1 teaspoon = 4 grams The body can only process about 2 teaspoons of sugar at a time. If you eat more than that, it gets stored as FAT! Recommended amount of sugar for average adult is up to 6 teaspoons (Source: WHO). Amount we eat per day: 25 teaspoons!

For children: 4 teaspoons. Amount they eat: 22 teaspoons. Teens eat about 34! Sugar is as addictive as heroin. When it is consumed, the same feel-good endorphins are released and sugar withdrawal can cause anxiety, headaches, cravings and irritability. Sugar addiction is often called America’s addiction. Sugar does help the medicine go down! It’s added to many medicines today both for children and adults. (So is food coloring, by the way!) According to the Domino Sugar company, sugar prolongs the life of fresh cut flowers. Try adding some to your vase. It is very possible you had 16 sugar cubes today — all in one sitting! That’s true if you drank a 20 oz. bottle of cola! Low-fat food fads of the past 30 years ensure that food manufacturers cut out fat but added loads of sugar to enhance taste. Proctor and Gamble has put Pantene
shampoo and conditioner into new bottles made out of sugar cane instead of petroleum. They are safer for the environment since you don’t need to refine/clean sugar cane. Sugar contains no proteins, minerals or vitamins your body needs. That is why it is called “empty calories.” Besides salt, Americans consume 10 times more sugar than any other food additive. In fact, of 2,600 things that are added to food, salt is consumed most, while sugar takes second place. DID YOU KNOW? BROWN VS. WHITE: You know that brown rice is healthier than white rice and whole-wheat bread is healthier than white bread but is the same true for brown sugar and white sugar?
No! Brown sugar is white sugar with some molasses — a thick syrup taken out of the sugar cane when it gets processed into sugar granules. When sugar is made from the raw plant, molasses is out of the sugar, but during the brown sugar processing some molasses is put back, creating the texture and color of brown sugar. Nutritionally, they are equally healthy. The only difference is the effect they have on recipes. “Sugar is the master of disguise,” says Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN, author of Read It Before You Eat It. “It can appear on a label under so many aliases, from organic cane juice to high fructose corn syrup.”

Organize while you clean
FINISHING UP THE KITCHEN FRIDGE AND FREEZER: • To keep the fridge smelling fresh, place an open box of baking soda in it. • Freezer: Keep each food type in a different area in the freezer: top shelf, bottom shelf, door, sides and drawers. You can even use bins on the shelves to categorize foods, like frozen vegetables, nuts, chicken, and especially bread that you may find yourself searching for often. • Fridge: As in the freezer, designate each shelf (and you can divide the right and left side) for different kinds of foods. For example: jars, pots, containers, cooking vegetables, eggs etc. Labels on the shelves will ensure the items are returned to the right place. • Big freezer tips: 1) Use each shelf for one kind of food. 2) Keep a list on the door with the contents of your freezer. 3) Place soups in containers that are lined with food storage bags for easier washing. • Keep nuts, specifically ground nuts, in the freezer and oats, wheat germ, coffee, cornflake crumbs etc. in the fridge to prevent them from becoming webby from moth infestation.
DINING ROOM/ LIVING ROOM: • To enable armchairs to be pushed in under the table (when just an inch or so is missing), you can attach nail-on glide with a felt or two to the legs of the table. (They’re available at housewares stores.) • For a neater and more spacious look, keep the chairs one inch away from the table. • To protect the wall from scratches and dents caused by the couch, measure the distance from the molding until the metal base at the bottom of the couch while the couch is reclined. Cut two 2x4 to that size and place one on either side on the floor behind the couch. • China Closet: Salt in the china closet causes silverware to turn yellow much faster. You can remove the glass inserts and keep them elsewhere. • For a neater look, keep silverware, crystal and leather items displayed on separate shelves. • Challah covers and tablecloths can be clipped onto hangers and hung in the coat closet to eliminate the extra creases caused when they are folded too many times. • Space under the china closet can be used for: simcha stuff,
candles, tablecloths and albums. • Candles: They can generally be divided into four bins: 1. Shabbos candles and accessories that are used on a weekly basis should be kept in a bin in the dining room, since they get used there. 2. Spare glasses and wicks need their own bin. 3. Chanukah candles should be kept in a bin with all the accessories and dreidels… 4. Keep all Havadalah supplies together. It can be kept in the kitchen if that is where Havadalah is made.
NEAT PLACES TO STORE TAPES AND CDS: • CDs: 1. Shoe boxes 2. Clear square containers with cover 3. Adjust a kitchen cabinet shelf to the height of a CD holder, and keep the CDs aligned across. a. Keeping them in their original holder preserves the CDs and it will be easy to locate them as well. b. Stacking loose ones on a stick is not a very handy solution, because it is time-consuming to find the ones you are looking for. c. You can divide the CDs in categories (KIDS: music, story; ADULTS: music, lectures). d. CD books can be kept in a tall bin or magazine holder. • Tapes fit very neatly in a three-drawer container.
SORTING PURIM STUFF: • Wrapping paper can be stored: 1) in a small garbage bag 2) in a flat, big container 3) in a garment bag. • Mishloach manos bags can be stored either in one of the big bags or in a bin. • Ribbons and adornments all go together in one bin. • Mishloach manos holders can be kept in their own box. Feel free to ask your questions! Leave a voicemail at 845-2743133 or send an email to comments@themonseyview.com, and keep an eye out for the answers.

Real Estate Mordechai and His Mortgage LAST YEAR MORDECHAI tried to get a mortgage on the palace that he had been given by King Achashverosh. Unfortunately, he encountered too many obstacles. No stability of employment…the property suffered from functional obsolescence — it had a gallows outside! But the actual reason why Mordechai was denied his mortgage loan was because for the many years that he stayed outside of the palace, watching over Esther, he had no income. He had owned a home in a Shushan suburb. It was a really tough time. He tried renting the home, but the tenants didn’t pay. Mordechai put the house up for sale. The economy wasn’t thriving, and even though the best realtors in Shushan were trying to sell his home, the house didn’t sell, until finally, a very, very low offer came in. After some negotiation, the bank who held his mortgage agreed to a short sale. This meant that the lender accepted as payment in full, less than what was actually owed. Mordechai, not knowing that this was one of the credit catastrophes that have minimum mandatory waiting periods before one can take out a new mortgage, went through all the angst, paid for an appraisal, jumped through hoops and wrote loads of explanation letters — all for naught. Having completed a short sale less than four years before, no matter what connections or who is relatives were, Mordechai did not qualify for a traditional mortgage loan. Lucky for Mordechai, he was well connected; after all his niece was the queen! And his nephew-by-marriage, the king! (Things just haven’t changed, after all these years. Connections and rich relatives ease any process — today, how many first-time homebuyers are getting out-bid against all cash buyers? Buyers who have rich relatives willing to put up cash if necessary?) Mordechai borrowed money from Esther and Achashverosh, with the intent of refinancing when he would be able to. Mordechai found out that he needed to wait one year before he could get a mortgage. The mortgage company started to work with him to prepare him, so that when he did apply for the loan, it would go

smoothly. They advised him how to strengthen his credit and credit score and made sure that he retained a stable employment and filed his tax returns on time. The appraisal that Mordechai received was also very helpful. Mordechai corrected all the defects and restored his new home to its original glory. Mordechai closed on his refinance in ten business days. His paperwork was stellar and perfect. It was the winter, and mortgage companies are notoriously slow at this time of year. Mordechai was
smart to not go to a “bid brand” bank where the process is flawed and impersonal. Everything happened like clockwork. The appraiser turned the report around in 24 hours, the title company had the title ready in days and the processors and underwriters were a pleasure to deal with. A complete v’nahafoch Hu! Mordechai’s loan was a cash-out refinance of a primary residence, so there was a “three-day right of rescission,” which means that the borrower receives the proceeds three days after the closing. So the loan funded — yes, you guessed it — on Purim! What a happy day! Mordechai brought a basket of delectable edibles to the mortgage company to show his hakaras hatov!
