I just finished reading the Kids First column about the ways that children learn, and I was pleasantly surprised to realize that Torah learning inherently speaks to all different types of learners. Auditory: shiurim and learning out loud. Visual: following along with texts Experiential: building knowledge based upon things already learned/ experienced. (Isn’t that what Gemara learning is all about? Drawing what we’ve learned from one area and applying it another to form a complete understanding?) Isn’t it mind-blowing that the Torah really takes everything — even the ways we innately learn — into consideration? A.F.

LIQUOR NEEDS A HECHSHER! I am not a fan of drinking liquor or wine, and hearing about three people who died after consuming too much has cemented my feelings. However, I feel it is important to let those who do drink know that liquor should either have a hechsher on the bottle or be approved on a list like the Star K or O-U. There are ways that the liquor can become not kosher within the process of making or aging it. Just like you wouldn’t put non-kosher food into your mouth, you should be careful about the liquor and wine that you consume. B. Klein

LIGHTING UP (PAINTED) FACES I just wanted to thank you for your feature on face painting. My clowns were adorable, and I managed to do it although I’m a bit artistically challenged. The tutorial and clear pictures really made the job an easy one for me. My kids, of course, were thrilled! Thank you, C.M.

SIDE OF SALMON I tried the maple side of salmon featured in your Purim issue. The recipe was delicious, with that perfect combination of sweet and salty. That being said, I’m even more appreciative for the idea of preparing M&S SHOE REPAIR

WRONG TIME TO START A NEW SERIAL

FASHIONBUG

With Purim preps in full swing, and me being quite behind schedule, I promised myself that there will be absolutely no reading until my work is done. The resolution held strong, until I saw that Chany Rosengarten’s new serial was launched in Issue #90. Onto the couch I went to check it out, and I stayed there, riveted, until I finished every single beautifully written sentence. The time period she chose intrigues me, so laden with emotions, such raw pain, and hope and courage shining through it all. I’m looking forward to following along another amazing serial. I may have broken my resolution, but I was thrilled to see Chany is back! A Sun on Stone Fan

RE: HAVE I MISSED THE BOAT? Dear Frustrated Mother, We were experiencing the same thing with our toddler who kept escaping his crib, to the point that he barely slept a few hours a night! Until someone helped me with this incredible brainstorm: Take a tight-fitting pair of leggings and sew a “V” of fabric in between the two legs. The child is then comfortable, but cannot stretch his feet wide enough to climb over the crib. I want to point out that my toddler, himself, was grateful for the full night’s sleep that we were able to grant him. B”H a few weeks later we were able to put him to sleep without it. He got used to staying in the crib! Hope this helps! T.L.

NOT A SIMPLE MATTER

A STYLISH CRADLE FOR THAT FASHION FORWARD NEWBORN.

I read the tip featured in your organizing column about preserving tzitzis knots. I am not a rav and cannot pasken, but something tells me that using crazy glue on tzitzis may pose halachic problems. However, I do have a tried-and-true method that saves the knots from unraveling. One person holds the tzitzis taut over a sink, while the second person carefully pours boiling water over the knots. This makes them shrink into place from the heat. Also, if you are going to use the tip about twisters, make sure to use plastic ones, or use only white ones. Colored twisters run when wet, and leave stains. Shira Weiss

MISSING HILCHOS SHABBOS COLUMN I am so much missing the beautiful in-depth halachos for Shabbos by Rebbetzin Weissmandl. Will you still be featuring that section? A Reader THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: The biweekly Hilchos Shabbos column will resume after Pesach.

Attached is a photo of my three beautiful butterflies. Thank you so much for the clear step-by-step instructions! I never before attempted painting, as art isn’t my strong point, but your tutorial made the painting so doable, and even simple; each face took me just eight minutes! And as you can see, the results were great! M.B.

As told to: Basya Lev

I WAS DOING A SIX-WEEK SUBBING JOB IN a school that had grades scattered in three different locations until they would move to their new building. Every day the teachers would ask if anyone heard when they were moving. There were a few times it almost happened. I had mixed feelings about the move. Although I was curious to see the new place, I wasn’t interested in being around for the move in case the things belonging to the teacher I was subbing for ended up missing. My six weeks were almost up and I asked the teacher when she planned to come back. She told me she would return on the following Wednesday. That Sunday night I received a call from the principal who said that I should go to the new building on Monday. My grade was being moved that night and the other grades would follow the next day. On Monday, before the girls went home, they took home a letter explaining what was going on and that the girls would have the day off on Wednesday. I was very happy for the teacher that I was subbing for. Since she was coming back on Wednesday, she would be able to set up her classroom and reorient herself before she started to teach the children. I was also glad that if anything was misplaced in the move, she would have a better chance of finding it, since the other teachers were also setting up that same day.

My Concerns About Low-Calorie Diets Concern #1

Becoming Weigh Smarter Low-Calorie Diets: Risks and Concerns DAY AFTER DAY, WHEN I MEET WITH CLIENTS OR even come across strangers, I hear the same thing. When I stand in line to order food, for example, the person in front of me may say something along the lines of, “I’d like to order a banana smoothie with green milk only.” Now, I don’t have anything against bananas per se — I happen to like them a lot — but I am concerned about the over-consumption of bananas due to their high sugar content. I can eat a bunch or two of the fruit, but for one who’s carbohydrate-sensitive, a little goes a very long way. From time to time, I’ll ask the person ordering a banana smoothie why she prefers green milk, versus blue or red, and I can usually predict the answer: “As you can probably see, I need to drop 30 pounds,” or “I’m always struggling with my weight, so I opt for the green milk which is fat-free and low in calories.” Once in a while, someone will tell me she prefers the taste of green milk. What these people are missing is the fact that high sugar consumption, even from natural foods, will convert into fat once ingested because of the high insulin response which stores away extra sugar in the form of fat. It’s a misconception that green milk, which is low in fat and calories, won’t turn into body fat. It will, because it’s the sugar content in the milk that’s the problem, not the fat. So the next time you order or prepare a smoothie at home for yourself, I would suggest using a little bit of red milk and just a drop of banana. Now, if you are always watching your weight, my assumption is that you might be familiar with low-calorie diets. If you managed to lose weight (not muscle!) on a low-calorie diet, and you maintain that weight eating the same amount of food for at least ten years without ever going hungry because you expended all your energy, then kudos to you! You really don’t need to continue reading this article, unless you’re worried about losing muscle while you’re counting calories (and I certainly would be).

60 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 15, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

It’s a misconception that green milk, which is low in fat and calories, won’t turn into body fat.

Most people I know jump from one diet to another without really “knowing” what this practice does to their bodies. If the number on the scale goes down, they jump for joy. However, if they were informed about the different types of diets, they would know the right thing for them. One major concern I have with low-calorie diets is that you tend to lose muscle when you restrict too much. And this may sound great, especially if the scale keeps moving. However, if you knew that muscle mass actually helps to burn more calories, even while you’re sleeping, would you still be excited about losing so much weight? Muscle boosts your metabolism because it needs a lot of energy (food), which translates into burning more calories during rest. Keep this in mind while I address my second concern.

Concern #2 Countless people I speak with are yo-yo dieting, and rely on low-calorie diets to lose weight. It’s extremely difficult to maintain a food plan when you are hungry! The reason so many people are hungry is that as soon as you limit your caloric intake, you also limit your fat intake — and fat is known to be satiating, which means

WEIGH SMARTER

that it keeps you full for longer periods of time. And besides, good fats boast a number of health benefits. So, if you’re counting calories and you’re frequently hungry, now you know why. Another problem is that if you don’t manage your calories wisely, you may end up expending all your energy too early in the day. As a result of this, you risk starving

yourself further (and losing even more muscle mass), or binging, and indulging in more food than necessary.

Concern# 3 When we discuss the “sugar roller coaster” in the next article, you will find that you can eat a small amount of calories, but that food

can be very high in carbohydrates, like a banana. However, if you are sensitive to sugar (and most people are), then a low-calorie diet won’t do much to solve your sugar issues. With that said, now that you have more information, you can hopefully make an informed decision about what is right for you in the long term!

OF

By Shaul Korning ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING INdustries in New Jersey and New York is solar energy. With generous government incentives coupled with sizable private investment, solar is a very viable energy solution. I wanted to find out more, so I went for a visit to PowerLutions Solar, a solar installation company headquartered in Lakewood with offices in Spring Valley, New York. I met with Chaim, Yerucham, Shlomo and Shmuel. Chaim is head of Sales, Yerucham is head of Engineering & Operations, while Shmuel heads the installation department and Shlomo is the Regional Director of the Hudson Valley.

March 15, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 69 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Can you tell us a little about PowerLutions Solar? Chaim: “Sure, we’ve been around for 8 years—” Yerucham: “Going on 9 years now.” Chaim: “Right! Our focus has always been to bring the best value to the customer, while delivering the best possible solution to save the most money from their solar system. We are very focused on customer satisfaction and we always stand behind our product.”

What’s the first thing I need to know about solar? Chaim: “Well the first thing I would say is to differentiate between residential and commercial.”

Let’s focus on residential solar; why should I put solar panels on my home? Chaim: “Okay, that’s a good question!” <laughs> “Solar will reduce the amount of electricity you use from your electric company since it produces electricity from the sun that you can use in your home.”

How does the sun produce electricity? Yerucham: “On a basic level, the radiation from the sun causes the electrons on the panels to be excited and move, which generates energy and is converted to electricity.”

What about at night, or when it’s cloudy — how does the home still have electricity? Chaim: “You are always attached to the electric grid, so you always have a flow of electricity.” Yerucham: “That’s actually a two-part question. When it’s cloudy it’s still possible to have some electricity produced, albeit a lower amount. In terms of the night question: In New Jersey and New York, and in many States, there is something called “net metering,” which basically means that you get the full value of solar electricity. At times when the sun is out and a minimal amount of electricity is being used, your meter will, effectively, go backwards, (essentially getting you credit for the electricity your solar panels are producing but you’re not using). When you come home at night, it will start to go forward again. So, you get the full value of the solar electricity and the grid is acting as a battery for the electricity produced that you are not using at a given time.”

Doesn’t it cost a lot of money to install solar panels on my home? Shlomo: “Yes and no. You can purchase it yourself and have it installed on your home, but there are different government incentives that lower the cost and

70 / THE MONSEY VIEW

allow you to recoup your investment at a much faster rate. “We also offer great financing options with no money out of pocket and you can save money right away! In addition, PowerLutions offers solar lease and PPA programs. It costs you $0 to install and you enjoy a very low rate on the electricity produced by the solar system. This option is also no money out of pocket and helps you to save a lot of money right away.”

What is the rate for the lease program? Yerucham: “That depends on several factors, including the pitch of the roof, position of the roof toward the sun, shade etc.” Chaim: “The rate includes the delivery and generation portion of your bill so it can bring your utility bill down to a couple of dollars.”

What are your financing options? Chaim: “We have several different options and terms. We have great no-money-down options that allow you to save money already in Year 1. We have terms from 5 to 25 years. The financing allows the system to be paid for 100%, including the amount of the tax credit.”

Tax Credit? Chaim: “Yes, when you purchase a solar PV system you get a Federal Income Tax Credit for 30% of the system cost. The financing option allows the tax credit portion to be paid for and, the idea is that you pay the financing company back when you get your tax credit payment, if you withhold, or save on paying the government the amount you would owe.”

What if I don’t have a need for tax credits or I don’t want to be involved in dealing with a tax credit? Chaim: “The lease and PPA program is perfect for you! The leasing company takes advantage of the tax incentives and they, in turn, give you a great rate on the solar electric-

ity. This allows you to utilize their ability to use the tax incentives and you save thousands of dollars!”

Okay, so let’s say you convinced me to go solar on my home. Aren’t you ruining my roof? Shmuel: “No, we do not damage the roof. We use the best practices in the industry to ensure quality installation. We only use top quality components and our experienced installers take extreme care to ensure the installation is blemish-free. All penetrations are sealed and flashed utilizing the same methods that a roofer would use if he needed to penetrate the roof.” Yerucham: “All roofs are reviewed and inspected by an architect or engineer in order to confirm that we are able to go ahead with the installation. We also procure all the required permits and approvals from the municipality and state, including all inspections.”

If there is a blackout can I still get electricity from the panels? Yerucham: “Not in the traditional sense, but we can install a special unit that comes with an outlet that can power up to 2,500 watts of power when the sun is out. It can be useful for charging various electronics. It has a limited production value, but it can go a long way when you need it.”

What are some reasons that people would not go solar on their home? Chaim: <laughs> “We get that question a lot by people who are incredulous about how great the deal sounds and they wonder why everyone doesn’t do it!”

Yes, that did occur to me as a possible Part B to my question.

is that their roof won’t support it, either because it’s too old or there is too much shade around the roof and they don’t want to trim anything. Another reason is they don’t like the look of it, although as more people are going solar we hear much less of that reason. It has become much more acceptable as more people do it.” Yerucham: “We usually use upgraded allblack panels that are more visually pleasing.”

If a person’s roof is 15 to 20 years old and it’s not old enough to be replaced yet, what options do they have? Chaim: “They can request a one-time removal and reinstallation so, when they get to the point of replacing their roof, PowerLutions will come and remove the system before the roof is replaced and reinstall it when the roof work is done.”

You also mentioned tree trimming. Shmuel: “Yes, we can have the tree, or trees, trimmed or removed, depending on what the customer wants and the solar system needs.”

What if they don’t want to remove or cut any trees, does that make solar impossible? Yerucham: “Depending how much shade the trees are causing. If it’s only minimal to moderate we can put solar, it will just affect the production.”

Is Rockland County going solar? Shlomo: “Yes! What we see now is what Lakewood looked like a year or two ago and we are seeing tremendous growth. The growth is being assisted by state rebates, state tax credits, federal tax credits and the high price of electricity.”

Do you mind taking a look at my house to see if it’s good for solar? Shlomo: <laughing> “Sure, I can take a look at the satellite imagery to get a preliminary idea pretty quickly!”

Thank you and thank you for your time! Chaim: “Thank you. You can reach PowerLutions Solar at 845-553-7100, 888-SUN-4-ENERGY, info@powerlutions. com or www.powerlutions.com. A great way to get a solar quote is to TEXT your address, directly from your cell phone, to 609-831-2125 and we will contact you ASAP to give a FREE solar quote!”

Chaim: “Well, there are different reasons. One reason

THE CONGREGANTS MADE SOUNDS of awkward compassion tinged with heaps of curiosity among themselves. What is his name? “Faivel. The baby cried. Bianca rocked. “He needs his mother,” she said. “Let’s go,” Sura said. The women filed down the narrow stairs. In the shul, the new father unwrapped newspaper, then the parchment paper that held his yishka. He had cut the herring himself last night, and his wife had taken the job of slicing the tomato into confetti. The important thing — Yosef Yitzchok sniffed appreciatively at the salty marinade — was that it was spicy, and oily, and good. He brought kichel to the table. “Wash. Wash,” he urged Chaim Dovid, Aharon, Moishe, Yona. “The father washes first. Cuts up the challah. Wash,” Yaacov said. So he washed. And in the silence where he was no longer expected to speak, his moment came. I have a son. I have Because it was beautiful, a son! After all these years. It is a joke. This world is one big laugh. I have a son! Named after his father. Of course. And yet… the joke was on him. Because

Forward it was beautiful, this moment, and guilt robbed him of it. If he’d only asked her. She would have said no. But at least he would have tried. And… he hadn’t. Henya, I’m sorry, he thought. We’ll have more sons. We will. Because, a namesake. It meant that we were alive. We carry on. You’ll be proud of Faivel. And of me. Watch me. ***** At home, the women had just left. To their credit, they cleaned up after themselves, even shook the tablecloth of its delkelech crumbs. Henya hoped there were some left for her. Hunger. The house was silent for the moment. From the window, she could see neighborhood children, out from school for some American holiday, scurrying like the rats they resided with. A puppy, too. The air smelled of dog fur and a collection of trash. In his crib, the baby slept. Faivel. I should sleep. I should. I’ll need it. She closed the window, but the house was hot, so she opened it again, but the residents’ shouts could be heard up here, so she closed it again. She lay down on her bed. Briefly, the world sashayed before her eyes. She closed her eyes. Falling stars behind her eyelids. The baby started crying. Faivel, he was called. Faivel was crying. They should have added a name. For… blessing. A pinch of disappointment. If she chose to admit it to herself, more than a pinch, a hollowed-out pit of disappointment. But what’s the point of admitting negative feelings? Her father, Mendel. In Henya’s young eyes, he was a tzaddik. Flawless. Larger than life. He would never have done what she did. Oh,

There was so much to do in a household. Buying meat, salting meat. Mending clothes, hanging clothes. And Yosef Yitzchok was so busy. He worked. And he learned. And he davened and planned; he was a big dreamer. But every woman wanted someone who would help her… To be recognized, appreciated. Oh, what was the point in dreaming? She had to shake herself from the warm and nostalgic clutches of wishing. She was tired… Faivel wailed. Henya was nearly asleep now, a hazy inbetween where it all comes together, what was, what took it away, what she had now… nothing. She had nothing. The baby was everything, all the hope, the vindication, and she had thought the name, the continuation of a legacy… but who cared? It was all okay, because he was alive, though even that wasn’t assured… The door creaked like it did when Yosef Yitzchok came home. “Henya?” She opened her eyes, strained up from the pillow but the baby fussed so she lay back down. “Are you up?” She was now. “I am.” “I want to tell you something. About… the baby’s name.” To be continued... Chany Rosengarten authors columns and serialized novels in leading publications. She can be reached at gchanyg@gmail.com.

PESACH Better Baking

Palisades Paper P

When I welcomed the Betty Crocker pizza maker in my house, I didn’t realize how many nights I’d have no pots, no stovetop or oven to wash. It took but a few days to realize that a large chunk of my cooking, and even baking, can be done in it, and it prompted me to go out and purchase a second one for fleishigs. The food is delicious, I cut back on oil in my frying, and cleanup is a cinch. Now before Pesach, this pizza maker is especially useful, as your family can enjoy fresh meals, even after your oven is off-limits, and it can all be prepared in the chometz spot in your house. The recipes I’m sharing this week require very little prep time for this busy season, but when things are less hectic, you can make the stuff from scratch in what will most probably become the most used appliance in your house.

EGGPLANT SANDWICHES Although these can be made with breaded eggplants you prepare on your own, now before Pesach, this is the perfect shortcut. The individual sandwiches are also easy to serve and to eat.

INGREDIENTS: Ready-to-bake B’gan eggplant slices, defrosted Marinara sauce or pizza sauce. Shredded cheese

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the pizza maker, and allow the eggplant to fry for 7-10 minutes on each side. 2. Layer a slice of eggplant, a tablespoon of the marinara or pizza sauce and a tablespoon of shredded cheese, followed by another layer of eggplant, sauce and cheese. 3. Close the pizza maker. The sandwiches should be ready in about 3-4 minutes, when cheese is melted and bubbling.

SEASONED CHEF: If you have more time allowance, you can saute your own vegetables in the pizza maker and layer it between the cheese and the sauce.

VEGETABLE QUESADILLAS INGREDIENTS: Wraps Butter 2 T. oil 1 onion, thin strips 1 red pepper, thin strips 1 yellow pepper, thin strips 1 tomato, diced 6 fresh mushrooms, sliced (A can can be used, but fresh will give you optimal flavor)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Turn on the pizza maker and pour the oil in. 2. Add the vegetables and saute until soft. 3. Remove the sauted vegetables and wipe the pizza maker with a damp paper towel. 4. Smear butter onto a wrap, and place butter-side-down into the pizza maker. 5. Add 3 tablespoons sauteed vegetables on one half of the wrap and sprinkle liberally with cheese. 6. Fold the wrap in half. 7. Close the lid and allow to bake for 5-7 minutes. 8. Open the lid, flip over the wrap, and leave machine open, allowing to bake for another 5-7 minutes. 9. Remove from pizza maker, and slice with pizza wheel into four.

Each wrap is two servings. Since you’re baking them folded, you can do two wraps at a time.

Cleaning the pizza maker is a breeze. Simply wipe it clean using a damp paper towel while the machine is still warm. You can already clean and set aside all of your small ap-

pliances, as just about anything can be made in this pizza maker (depending if you want to keep it pareve, milchigs or fleishigs).

THAT JUST CAN’T MAKE UP HIS MIND

QUESTION: My ten-year-old son has a very hard time making decisions. Even simple decisions, like choosing which candy he wants for Shabbos or which book he wants to read are very difficult for him. Any idea what’s going on? MENDEL BINETH, MSW RESPONDS: Decisions, decisions, decisions. Who doesn’t have a hard time making decisions? When placed in a situation where a person has to choose one thing and potentially lose out on another, many of us find ourselves faltering — not quite at peace with the decision-making process. Most of us, though, only have significant trouble reaching decisions when we know that they will be life-altering. If even small decisions cause pause, like in your son’s case, it might help to understand that there are different personality types that can influence the ability to decide seamlessly. THE DEEP THINKER Some kids are full of depth, and routinely analyze life from every possible angle. These kids find it natural to evaluate every step they take. For them, making a decision may be protracted as they weigh the pros and cons of every option. THE WINNER Who doesn’t want to be a winner? Everyone likes to be a winner, but some kids take it to the extreme. When faced with a choice-dilemma, some kids will be worried about whether their choice will make them a “winner.” They are overly concerned about what others think of them, and if someone were to tell them that they would have chosen differently, this type of child would feel terrible, feeling it a personal attack on himself. For these kids, the social stigma they imagine comes with choos-

98 / THE MONSEY VIEW

ing “wrongly” can be a paralyzing force. Even if they have their own opinion about which is the best choice, the fear of rejection may create difficulties. They might choose to not decide at all. THE PERFECTIONIST How often do you hear the phrase, “Oh, she’s a perfectionist!”? Perfectionism is thrown about casually in speech because it is a fairly common trait amongst human beings. But it is important to understand that “perfectionism” is a general statement, not an all-inclusive description of a character trait. The question to ask is: What makes a person a perfectionist? Does the person have an obsessive way of thinking? Does he feel that he is always on show, and hence, strives for perfectionism? Or is he a perfectionist in thinking, like the deep thinker above? Perfectionism can hinder decisions from happening, because the perfectionist needs everything to be “just so.” THE ANXIOUS CHILD Children with anxiety often have hard times making decisions. They always secondguess themselves, worried about the consequences of choosing one way and not the other. They may imagine the worst-case scenario in every choice, and going through all of the possibilities may take a while. THE SELF-ESTEEM DAMAGED CHILD Children are fragile. Their self-esteem is something that can be easily damaged by a variety of factors. For a child with self-esteem issues, previous negative feedback on their past decisions can impact future decision making. Like “the winner,” children with damaged self-esteem will worry about what others will think. For them, though, the pain is perhaps more intense, more closely related to their very existence. A wrong look or comment in regards to a decision the child makes is enough to cut through the very core of the child and cause searing agony. These kids learn that perhaps, making decisions just isn’t worth the pain.

So, delayed or protracted decision-making isn’t always cause for concern. It may just be that your child is a deep, thought-out individual. If this is the case, don’t worry! But if your child is showing signs of anxiety, damaged self-esteem or other traits and behaviors that cause concern, getting your child evaluated may be a great decision. During an evaluation with your son, I would investigate two angles: 1. Does it appear that your child is developing a disorder, leading to his indecisiveness, such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? 2. Is the inability to make decisions a simple character trait? If it is a character trait, which may sometimes run in families, we want to make sure that the trait is not dominating the child’s life in a detrimental way. Is it affecting your child’s school, social or home life? Is it affecting his overall well-being? If yes, we may need to work on making that trait more liveable. If you’re not sure why your child behaves the way he does, it’s a good idea to consult with a professional that is trained to ask the right questions and can zoom in on your child’s issues — or confirm that there is nothing to worry about. Not every child who has a hard time with decision-making needs to have it addressed, but some most certainly do! If you see your child’s functioning is being affected by indecisiveness — such as if his/her daily routine is significantly hindered or he/she is frequently losing sleep over various decisions — then you’ll want to address the root issues that are contributing to your child’s difficulty with decision-making. If you decide to schedule an evaluation with Kids First, we can help you pinpoint both your child’s strengths and areas that may need nurturing. That’s what we’re here for: To help you nurture your child and watch him blossom! Please note: Names and identifying details have been changed to protect our clients’ privacy.

BUILDING A DECISIONCONFIDENT CHILD You want your child to grow into a confident adult who is capable of making decisions, both large and small. But that doesn’t happen overnight. For children to grow into adults who trust their decision-making capabilities, they need to get practice while still in their youth. Here are some examples of ways you can nurture your child’s decisionmaking capabilities: • Allow your child to choose between 2–3 different clothing items to wear • Encourage your child to choose the bedtime story you’ll read him/her • Let your child choose the color of his/ her toothbrush As the child gets older, the decisions being made should reflect age-appropriateness. A teen, for example, can be allowed to make the decision if she wants to walk together with friends to a simcha or take a bus and get there faster. Even if the outcome of a decision is negative, that’s okay — it helps the child learn that mistakes are allowed and that tomorrow is always another day!

Putting your kid first, so growth becomes second nature. 845.425.2299 #101 • 20 Robert Pitt Drive #212 March 15, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 99 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

As told to Chany G. Rosengarten by Rabbi Dr. Richard Louis Price OUR SON SAADIA WASN’T DEVELOPING. AT age three, he didn’t speak properly; he had one incomprehensible word for everything. He’d walk around the edges of a room, look toward the periphery and ride his hands around himself. We took him to the pediatric neurologist, genealogist — anyone who could shed light and provide a diagnosis. After much searching, he was pigeonholed into the category of PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified). He was on the autistic spectrum, not considered completely autistic. Today, the medical community has started removing Asperger’s syndrome, PPDNOS and other labels on the spectrum, streamlining the diagnoses under one umbrella: the autistic spectrum. We sent him to Jawonio and Hempstead School for special ed, where he was provided with OT, PT, ABA and speech, and yet he made no progress. We couldn’t place him in a Jewish school; he had no language or even rudimentary vocabulary in English, let alone in Hebrew. He was getting older and growing bigger, and yet he didn’t progress at all. His strange behavior was very discouraging. I’m a trained psychiatrist, so I knew what all the medications out there have to offer. There are no answers. Many of the medications commonly given to autistic children help only some of the behav-

iors and symptoms, and not the core issue. They often have horrible side effects and an entire cocktail of other meds are required to counteract them. We didn’t know what to do and my son clearly needed help. His class of four children had four teachers. He was impulsive and wild. He’d kick holes in the wall, which we wouldn’t bother fixing, because the next day would bring another one. We merely covered it with a painting, because it was only a matter of days before more damage appeared. He was endangering his life, running home alone in middle of the road. Taking care of Saadia was impossible. His first real word was “octagon.” He looked up from dinner table, at the light. “Octagon,” he pointed. He was right. This told me that he had deep intelligence, more than we were accessing; he just couldn’t express it. We needed to help him get out of himself. He couldn’t remain locked in his autism. The medical field was moving away from treatment typically administered for autism spectrum disorder, since it wasn’t helping anyway. I understood that for my son, and others in a subgroup like him, rehabilitation was possible. This subgroup was amenable to treatment, because they had a cluster of symptoms that, recurring in eighty percent of them, was different than the other autistic children. Their symptoms could be broken down into five groups. We named the condition of this subgroup PRICE, an acronym for the symptoms they had: Particularism, Reciprocity, Impulsivity, Concentration and Emotional Lability. PARTICULARISM is a rigid ways of doing things. He fixated on order and details. In our first interview to place him in yeshiva, Saadia knew that the interview would conclude at 1 o’clock. When 1 o’clock came, still in the presence of the principal and faculty, he yelled, “It is 1 o’clock; we have to go now.” He was inconsolable. worker called his name, he insisted that his name was Saadia, not Cyrus. They refused to allow him to board the plane until my mother explained his autism. RECIPROCITY is a lack of social skills. He couldn’t maintain conversation, be sympathetic or give the expected response. In conversation, he’d twirl his hands, spin objects, make poor eye contact and say inappropriate statements. He couldn’t empathize, share stories or understand/make jokes. He didn’t recognize when he or others acted inappropriately.

IMPULSIVITY is a blockage in acting according to foreseen consequences. He couldn’t wait, intruded in other people’s conversations, and took rash, dangerous actions. Saadia bolted across a busy street on Yom Kippur in front of a Mack truck. I had to run out in the street to direct traffic to get him back. He also nearly died jumping into a pool that was over his head. My sister jumped in after him in her clothes to save him.

EMOTIONAL LABILITY Is a reactivity in which moods change at the slightest provocation. If he didn’t get what he needed or what he was fixated on, he would throw objects and get into an angry fit. If he wanted happiness, he spun himself or objects around, and this put him into a euphoric state. Even when one of these five symptoms were treated as a separate issue, he didn’t respond to the treatment. Giving regular OCD medicating for my son’s particularism, for example — which looked just like OCD because he was fixated on certain ideas and

repeatedly did the same acts — only made it worse. Giving Prozac or Zoloft, regularly given as antidepressants, not only doesn’t cure these children’s emotional lability, but makes them wild. I read the studies done on autism, and they weren’t encouraging. The doctors had all tried every medication out there, with no positive effect. We had tried everything, and yet Saadia remained the same. At that time, a new medication in the psychiatry world was being in-

troduced. Originally created as a blood pressure medication, Intuniv was found to be a calming medication, without a stimulating effect. It was a slow-release tablet and worked well for many patients. We decided to try it for our son. It worked very well. It addressed his impulsivity and concentration, and he seemed much calmer. It still didn’t help his reciprocity and particularism and emotional lability. His social life was offbalance. He was calmer, so we knew Intuniv was a breakthrough. We looked into alternative treatments. My father is a pharmacist, so we know about side effects and we’d rather try natural treatment. In my practice as well, I work with people who don’t rush toward medication. I read up on inositol, a supplemental B8 vitamin that, in research, was found comparable to the best OCD, panic and anxiety medication. Pharmaceutical companies did not promote it, because supplements make no money. B8 is something our body naturally creates. It wasn’t covered by insurance and it got lost in the shuffle of treatments. A study in the ‘90s looked at inositol as a cure for anxiety. In small doses, it didn’t work, but in large doses it was effective. Many B vitamins are not absorbed well in the body, so a large concentration was needed for any effect. Looking back at further studies, the FDA tested the substance for safety, as an additive in baby formula, and found it to be not unsafe at any dose. A water soluble substance, it’s expelled once the body has had enough. I was eager to see if it would work and provide the calming affect my son, and others with the PRICE symptoms, needed. Surprisingly, it did. My son re-

sponded so well to it, in fact, it was as if he was reborn. I started giving it to patients, both with the PRICE symptoms and for anxiety and panic. I found one kosher vitamin company, Freeda, that produced the vitamin in a very high concentration. Without having to take too much, people found it helpful. When I gave it to my son, his particularism and emotional lability dissipated. His moods evened out, he stopped being aggressive or euphoric and became even-keeled. He started reading, devouring such complex texts such as encyclopedias, his favorite. He was now taking Intuniv, which helped him for his impulsivity and concentration, and the inositol, which helped his particularism and emotional lability. Having cleared up four of his five symptoms, the reciprocity fell into place on its own. He became sociable and relatable, like a new person. He became aware of his surroundings. He reflected to others what he was experiencing with them. He started laughing at jokes and having conversations. He was becoming personable and able to express himself. The Yeshiva of North Jersey now accepted him into their mainstream first grade. Seeing Saadia’s transformation, we knew he needed to take his medication and supplement daily. We saw the difference immediately if he was not on the inositol. But it wasn’t easy giving Saadia his inositol. The vitamin powder dissolves better in food than in water. We tried hiding it in his food, because inositol is a sugar alternative and tastes like Sucralose. The hard part was getting him to finish his plate. Twice daily, we had to consistently make sure he ate the food hosting the inositol. His teachers called us if he had been fussy or irritable, and we connected it with his unfinished inositol. It was vital to give it to him every day. We knew he must take it every day. If it made such a difference to his behavior, education — his very life — we wanted him to have it no matter what. A pill would have been much easier than concealing it in his food, though. We needed a different solution. By hashgacha pratis, my older son met one of the Ostreicher children in

camp, which got me thinking. It occurred to me that the inositol could be baked into an Ostreicher’s cookie! It wouldn’t affect the taste, since the inositol was a sugar substitute, after all. It could also withstand the heat in the baking process. And everyone likes Ostreicher’s cookies, so what could be bad about taking a couple in the morning and at night, as a snack, to help with autism, anxiety, OCD or panic? The Ostreicher company undertook the challenge, experimenting without sugar, with some sugar, with honey. Eventually, the cookies tasted just like regular Ostreicher’s

chocolate cookies. Saadia happily ate them. We could clearly measure how many he ate. The inositol cookie was as effective as the powder in food. I started distributing cookies to my clients. They reported amazing changes when the cookie was eaten consistently. Children needed more cookies, and adults less, because adults can better absorb the vitamin. The cookies had a high concentration of inositol, so that three cookies twicedaily were enough. Compared to the biggest capsule, containing only 500 mg, the cookies were a big win. For my son, and others like him, the cookies were a miracle. Now Saadia is on the inositol and Intuniv for the past three years with no long-term side effects and the benefits maintained. He is off all of his therapies and is thriving in a mainstream class. He frequently gets As on his quizzes, loves school, and is invited to and at-

tends his friends’ parties. He went from the worst place to the best, baruch Hashem. The cookies are awaiting a trial study in Cornell University, where I am a clinical professor. Because every medication needs to be compared

to its placebo, Ostreicher’s cookies are perfect. Study participants are given either Ostreicher’s regular chocolate chip cookies, or Ostreicher’s’ cookies with inositol hidden in them. The study may result in the cookies being recognized by the FDA, becoming standardized treatment, and covered by most insurances. For now, many of my patients, along with the doctors and media who are picking up on the new trend and promoting this miracle vitamin, rejoice together with me and my family. hen my younger sister made her shidduch, after years of intense searching, my level of happiness for her was grand and bursting and over the top. Finally, she had found her soulmate and could begin to build a family. At her chasunah, I watched her stand under the chuppah, with tears streaming down her face, in heartfelt gratitude that this day had finally come. The excitement of the chasunah died down and we went back to the humdrum of life. But I kept waiting with half an ear to hear the news. After all, she was already “old” when she got married. I hoped that the blessing of a baby would follow swiftly and easily. But year after year passed, with no calls and no news. And each time my wife had a baby, or any of the other family members welcomed a new addition, my heart cringed in pain for my sister, knowing how she longed and dreamed for the day. It hurt me so much to see her suffer, again. And so I decided to take action. I’ve heard the story of R’ Shimon Bar Yochai and the power of Meron so many times. Signing up for the devout men of Kollel Meron, I asked them to please daven for my sister and her husband that they should soon be blessed with a baby. Ten months later? Her son was born. The power of Meron, and the tefillos of Tehillim Kollel, are no longer just stories. They are real, real as the beautiful nephew I hold in my hands today.

THE QUESTION OF WHO

Who discovered the placebo effect? The end of World War II was near, but not close enough. The bombs continued falling and the bullets continued flying. Death and destruction were everywhere. For Henry Beecher, the battle took place inside of military tents surrounded by the dead and dying. Trained in Harvard Medical School, Dr. Beecher was an experienced physician assigned to save the lives of allied soldiers wounded in battle.

Many times, that meant painful operations under less-than-ideal conditions. One particular soldier under Beecher’s care was badly wounded and in dire need of emergency surgery. Morphine, however, was in short supply and Beecher was worried that without pain relief the man would not survive the procedure, as he feared the soldier would go into cardiovascular shock from the intense pain.

Beecher was at a loss. Suddenly, a nurse arrived and quickly filled a syringe with saline solution and injected it into the patient. The man noticeably relaxed and Dr. Beecher, stunned by what he’d seen, proceeded to do the surgery without use of any anesthesia. The soldier felt little pain and did not go into shock. All he’d been given was a little salt water. Placebo had been discovered.

THE PROBLEM WITH PLACEBOS

Times are a-changin’, and with time comes new advances in the world of trickery. While pharmaceutical companies can be credited with inventing truly life-saving medications, many can also be blamed for rigging trials and withholding data. In fact, there is a branch of science partially devoted to rooting out sham trials, called epidemiology. Planning to sham? Here are some modern-day methods to getting the results you want when running a medication trial: A 2012 Harvard study concluded that people with a specific gene variation were most susceptible to the effects of placebo medications, while those with another type of gene variation were least affected. By hand-picking trial participants, pharmaceutical companies can ensure that the placebo effect is weaker than response to the drug being tested, guaranteeing that their drug will make it to market. Many modern day trials continue to pit new medications against placebo, not taking into account that well-respected medications are already being used for the same conditions. Testing against a placebo is, in essence, testing only against a person’s ability to activate his own healing capabilities. Trials of new medications need to be tested against the already-established medications to earn their slots as replacements with more benefit and less side effects. Placebo is often used as an easy ticket to success. Unfortunately, in Big Pharma trials, there are many ways to fudge. Most often, negative data — like when a placebo beats the trial drug — just goes missing. For example, one medication with seemingly sound scientific testing has been shown to have had 76% of trial information withheld from doctors and patients. That cheese doesn’t stand alone; over 50% of anti-depression drug testing is hoarded and hidden from outside eyes.

THE QUESTION OF WHAT

What actually happens to the body during the placebo effect? Diagnosed with lymphoma, Mr. Wright was bedridden in dire condition. With tumors as large as oranges located in many places throughout his body, Wright had little hope. But then his doctor approached him with a new drug: Krebiozen. The doctor was hopeful, but also petrified that the new medication might further harm his patient. It was, after all, only a trial drug and nothing had yet been proven. One injection and three days later Mr. Wright was back on his feet, the tumors notably smaller. Soon enough, there were no traces of tumors to be found, and Mr. Wright was released as a healed patient. For two months Mr. Wright continued to be the epitome of health. And then… The news reports started trickling in, claiming Krebiozen to have failed in curing the dreaded disease. Mr. Wright read article after article criticizing the new drug, and surprisingly, the tumors returned as he began to doubt the magical healing he’d experienced after the injection. Eventually, he was hospitalized once again. This time, however, his doctor wanted to try something new. “It’s a new, improved version of Krebiozen,” the doctor explained. “The batch the media wrote of was faulty. This one works.” He injected Mr. Wright with the new drug — which was in actuality, only distilled water. Mr. Wright experienced a full recovery, once again. But recovery was shortlived. The American Medical Association released an official

statement about Krebiozen, pronouncing it positively ineffective in treating the disease. Mr. Wright was crushed and died two days later. UNTIL RECENTLY the medical world and laymen alike have believed placebo to be, as the dictionary describes: a substance that has no therapeutic effect, used as a control in testing new drugs. That definition is now being challenged. Harvard’s Professor of Medicine Ted Kaptchuk is working hard to show the world that placebo not only works, but to show exactly how placebo works — because for some patients, there’s no question that placebo has power. While Kaptchuk doesn’t assert that a person can just “think himself better,” there are proven physiological responses that occur in a large percentage of people when administered a placebo medication. Heart rate, blood pressure and even blood test results have been positively affected after patients have received placebos, especially in cases of depression, fatigue, anxiety or the like. While the entire mechanism of placebo-induced healing isn’t fully understood, there clearly are changes to the chemical activity that takes place in the brain, to the point of medication mimicry. Many patients truly feel better after taking placebo medication! Interestingly, even patients that knew they were receiving placebo medications showed significant betterment during studies, leading Kaptchuk and his crew to believe that the simple act of “taking” some-

thing is enough to activate certain mechanisms of healing within the brain. Fabrizio Benedetti, a neuroscientist studying the placebo effect, has been quoted as saying, “[Therapeutic] rituals and drugs use the very same bio-

chemical pathways to influence the patient’s brain.” According to Benedetti, while placebo medications contain no actual healing compounds, they may, under the right conditions, stimulate the body’s own healing capabilities.

THE QUESTIONS OF WHEN AND WHERE

Why is the placebo effect more powerful in many parts of the world today than ever before? For years, trials that pitted new medications against placebos were considered the gold standard for determining if a drug works as is claimed. Based upon the results of these trials, medications were often approved or sent back to the lab for alterations — or even cast completely away. In a fascinating turn of events, however, placebos have clearly begun outpacing many modern medications, with as many as 7 out of 10 trials favoring the placebo over even long “proven” drugs. Dr. William Potter, drug developer and psychiatrist, came across the phenomenon in the 1990s and was understandably baffled. With the help of a tech-wiz, Potter began digging deeper, turning over Big Pharma industry files in the search for answers. Unearthing hidden records, Potter discovered that not only were placebos often outranking medication in effectiveness, but also that the location of drug trials frequently affected the outcome of the results. While one would assume that placebo vs. medication trial results should be basically similar whether they take place in New York or India, this is not the case at all. Valium, for instance, failed against pla-

cebo in trials based in the U.S., while it bested placebos in France and Belgium. Prozac, on the other hand, performed better in America than it did in South Africa or Europe. Based upon this research, one must ask: Are our societal expectations of how well medication should work being superimposed upon placebos and trial medications, causing them to be more or less effective based on where we live? In general, the placebo effect in America is going strong and gaining strength, perhaps due to the country’s unfailing trust in the medical system, FDA validation and yes, the power of a pill. According to Kaptchuk and Benedetti’s research, the placebo effect may be caused by our trust in medication — and perhaps the the opposite way around as well… It can well be inferred that the effect of some certified medications may be largely placebo in nature! In fact, it was only after the discovery of placebo treatments’ ability to help with various mood disorders that Big Pharma invested a wealth of resources into creating mood-stabilizing medications. Do those medications really work… Or is the therapeutic component the simple act of popping a pill?

The Bait:

Origins

“It cures everything. Full of antioxidants and including 19 amino acids the body needs, it heals the body of all ails. It makes your digestive system fit as a fiddle, your aging body young as a bride’s, your skin smooth as silk, and it even lifts your mood. It eases nausea and aches and pains and depression, and it improves vision. It contains more vitamin C than oranges, more iron than a piece of steak, and more beta carotene than carrots. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth every last penny. Would you like to try it?”

It all started in 2003, when FreeLife International, Inc. changed their product line to focus on juice made from goji berries (also known as wolfberries), which they sold under the product name Himalayan Goji Juice. Earl Mindell, a writer and nutritionist associated with FreeLife, made several claims about Himalayan Goji Juice regarding evidence of cancer cell inhibition, blood pressure regulation, blood sugar level balance and the anti-aging secrets inherent in the juice of the tiny, red berry. “I have never seen anything like this,” Mindell said. FreeLife sold (and still sells) the juice to customers using multi-level marketing by independent salespeople who are paid commission on their sales and the sales of their downline.

Such phone calls from independent salespeople inspired confidence, person to person. And then there were the advertisements: Vivid and descriptive and full of glowing promises. There was nothing that Goji juice wouldn’t ease, mitigate or entirely cure. Diabetes, the dreaded disease, side effects of its treatments... goji berries, or their juice, were the answer to it all.

The Response: Some people were cynical, unwilling to invest in what they saw as another fleeting health fad, among them those who’ve already been taken in with other marketing manipulations. There were some with a wait-and-see attitude, watching passively as things developed. And then there were those who emptied their pockets and purchased those costly bottles of Himalayan Goji Juice, religiously imbibing them daily by the half-cupful and waiting for the miracles to unfold.

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 15, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

The Effect “It’s five weeks now, and my pimples have completely disappeared!” “Since I started drinking goji juice daily, my energy levels have risen; I can get things done, and I feel like a mentch.” “It is amazing how after three weeks, my knee pain has disappeared.” “I bought two dozen bottles, drank the juice for weeks, but my cellulite didn’t go away.” The success stories were plentiful, as were the plight of those who saw no change, other than their depleted bank accounts. (And then there were those who reported adverse side effects.) While the fruit was definitely proving beneficial for some, medical professionals and disappointed customers started to question the claims...

Proof or Spoof? In 2006, the FDA sent warning letters to goji juice distributors for claims they made without scientific evaluation, and they stated that it’s “not generally recognized as safe and effective for the referenced conditions.” In a 2007 interview, the lack of the clinical proof was further exposed. A coauthor of a study that Mindell cited, said that his research does not, in fact, prove that goji has anti-cancer properties, and there is no scientific evidence of any positive effects that occur when consumed. In addition, the study was not conducted by Memorial Sloan-Kettering as Mindell had claimed it had. Additionally, the Ph.D degree that Dr. Mindell, as FreeLife referred to him, received was from an unaccredited institution. His doctoral degree was essentially bogus. In 2009, a class action lawsuit was filed against FreeLife, alleging the false claims, misrepresentations, and false and deceptive advertising regarding goji juice. The lawsuit sought compensation for the damages on behalf of purchasers during the previous four years.

The Effects of the Lawsuit FreeLife modified some of its claims and announced they were no longer associated with Mindell. (However, until today, distributors still use his false claims to promote the products.) Sloan-Kettering advertised the bold-faced statement that “Despite claims by several marketers, the efficacy and safety of lycium products (goji berry) for cancer treatment in humans have not been established.”

Goji Today Goji juice is being sold in health food stores worldwide, and there are many who find it beneficial to their health and quality of life. Lack of clinical evidence and often poor quality control in the manufacture of consumer products prevent it from being scientifically recommended or applied.

The Benefits Well, the reason people do see positive results, are because goji berries are, indeed, incredibly healthy. Regular consumption may give the body a muchneeded boost of vitamins, minerals, healthy sugars,

antioxidants and other essentials it may not be getting daily, although goji berries cannot substitute a good diet with a variety of vegetables. Consuming too much or together with certain medications may be harmful, so a medical professional should be consulted

For many of us “popping a pill” is not as easy as it sounds. A nationwide survey revealed that 40% of American adults have experienced difficulty swallowing pills.

Dysphagia: difficulty swallowing If it’s “in your head” and not a physiological condition, the following technique has been proven to work.

1. Put a capsule on your tongue. 2. Take a sip of water but don’t swallow. 3. Tilt your chin toward your chest. 4. Swallow the capsule and water while your head is bent down. The top prescribed medication in the U.S. is Synthroid at about 21.5 million prescriptions in 2015. It is a medication for an underactive thyroid. Penicillin is the first on every list of “important drugs” because it pointed the way in treating microbial infections.

The earliest pill emerged in ancient Egypt as a little round ball containing medicinal ingredients mixed with clay or bread.

All pills were round and white until mid-20th century.

Did you wonder why some painkillers are red, Motrin is orange, and Tylenol PM is blue? Like the Romans in early civilizations discovered that “people eat with their eyes” as well as with their palates, patients respond best when color corresponds with the results they seek in medication. Calm blue for a good night’s sleep, or dynamic red or orange for speedy relief.

DO participate in your local Drug Take Back program, soon to be in effect in Rockland County, where pharmacies with three or more branches are required take back unused medication. DON’T flush them down the plumbing system, as that will expose drinking water to dangerous chemicals.

MEDICINAL MYTHS Myth #1: If you’re in severe pain, you can ignore the label and increase your dosage. Fact: The recommended dose is not a suggestion; it is a careful calculation reached by pharmaceutical experts after much research. Never increase the dose without a doctor’s permission. Myth #2: If I’m feeling fine, I can stop my prescription medication. Fact: If you stop taking your medication early, it increases your chance of relapsing into illness, and can make germs stronger, as they’re not entirely destroyed. Myth #3: Natural remedies are always safer. Fact: They may seem safer and healthier, but standards are not as strict, and many may not be FDA approved. Potential side effects may also not be mentioned on the label. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about safety.

Organize while you clean

PAPER, PAPERS, PAPERS Papers are the biggest stress for everyone! There’s nothing as overwhelming as paper clutter. So let’s go through some tips and ideas for keeping them in order: • It is always better to store papers standing upright than lying flat, because they’ll be easier to sift through to find what you need. PAPERS THAT ACCUMULATE ON A DAILY BASIS should be organized as follows: 1. Children’s Parsha sheets 2. Incoming mail 3. Articles/important forms. • Magazine holders usually work best for these; keep them handy, with each category in a separate holder and labeled! • If you like to save your children’s creative projects, assign a separate folder for each child. • These folders should be sifted and sorted weekly or monthly. FOR BILLS AND PAPERS that need to be kept handy, you have two options: Either purchase a file cabinet, or a container called a “show-off box” that is the perfect size for file folders. Make sure to fill in the tabs (of the green folders) with the contents of that section, for example, O&R, Discover-7469, Insurance and so on. Then, insert a manila folder into each section as well, for easy removal. When a folder fills up, or after a long passage of time, remove them from the file cabinet and either discard older ones, or store them elsewhere. Make sure to file the bills, too, as soon as they are taken care of. Keeping this bin handy makes filing easy, quick, convenient and serves as an organized paper system. HOW CAN I REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PAPERS IN THE HOUSE AND ELIMINATE THOSE THAT ARE UNNECESSARY? 1. BILLS: Take bills out of the envelope and discard the envelopes. Put the unfolded bill and the return envelope on a separate pile. 2. INVITATIONS: Fill in the information (name, hall) in your calendar right away so the invitation can be discarded. 3. PHONE NUMBERS: Instead of clipping ads that contain information you want to refer to, record the information in a small phonebook/notebook, to eliminate

the extra papers. 4. IMPORTANT PAPERS needed over a couple of days can be hung on the fridge. 5. LISTS: Every night, create a list of what you want to accomplish the next day. You can even divide your day by the hour. It’ll lend structure and give your day a quick start with clarity of mind, less procrastination, and you’ll get to accomplish so much more. Even if you don’t get to finish everything on the list, you will find that you will accomplish more than without it, and be able to remain calm throughout the day. Things can always be bumped to tomorrow’s list. Another list idea would be to keep a paper on the fridge, and whenever you run out of an item, add it to your grocery list. You won’t have to keep it in mind until you get to the grocery, and you won’t find yourself having forgotten important items you needed. 6. RECIPES: • It’s easiest to find the recipe you’re looking for if they are organized by food type (side dishes, dairy dishes, soups etc.). • Recipes clipped from magazines should be kept in a looseleaf folder, preferably in sheet protectors. You can use dividers to separate categories. • Mark an X near recipes in your cookbooks that you have tried and didn’t appreciate, so you don’t find yourself making them in the future. THREE-DRAWER PLASTIC CONTAINERS HAVE A MULTITUDE OF USES: 1. Assign one drawer for each child. There your children can keep their coloring books or any papers they still want to color. This will give them a place to keep their papers instead of them being left lying around, and they will always know where to find them. In addition, it takes little effort to move these plastic chests to the table and then put the papers back into the drawer when done. I also have one drawer for myself, in which I put anything I still want to read. 2. They are great for organizing craft items and supplies, like white papers, colored papers, glue, scissors, scotch tape, stapler, pompoms, pop sticks, stickers, coloring books, or whatever else you may have. Small craft items can also be kept in smaller bins; and then several can be placed together in a bigger one.

3. Tools. You can also keep smaller containers in each drawer to organize different kinds of tools or screws. 4. Cassette tapes. They fit in perfectly! 5. Paper goods, like cutlery, napkins and flat plates. 6. Flat puzzle boards. A MAGAZINE HOLDER IS GREAT FOR: 1. Keeping current reading material, like magazines, that you didn’t finish reading yet. 2. Your kids’ parsha papers. Make sure to replace them every Friday, so they shouldn’t accumulate! 3. Coloring books. 4. Small, thin kids’ books. 5. Magazines you want to save; each kind in a different holder. Extra supplies and school supplies that are not currently in use should be stored in a large bin. If you don’t own many coloring utensils and they don’t need a large bin, have the small three-drawer containers handy, and designate each drawer for different writing implements (markers, crayons, colored pencils, and pens). Each drawer can be taken out separately when needed. Children’s books should be organized by size. When they are placed horizontally in the bins, it is much easier to look through.

Real Estate Rising Interest Rates ALL THAT WE HEAR IN THE NEWS lately regarding interest rates is that they are going up! What interest rates are they talking about? Usually the interests rate being discussed are the federal funds rate. Wikipedia’s definition is: “In the United States, the federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions (banks and credit unions) lend reserve balances to other depository institutions overnight, on an uncollateralized basis. Reserve balances are amounts held at the Federal Reserve to maintain depository institutions’ reserve requirements. Institutions with surplus balances in their accounts lend those balances to institutions in need of larger balances. The federal funds rate is an important benchmark in financial markets.” This is not the mortgage interest rate. So, although this rate is not the mortgage rate, and therefore if it gets raised, it doesn’t mean that mortgage rates are going up, effective immediately, whatever happens in the economy eventually will trickle down in some way to affect the mortgage interest rates. Historically, the raising of this rate has, in many occasions, caused mortgage interest rates to actually go down. Despite this, the predictions across the board, from all economic sectors is that mortgage interest rates will gradually rise in the coming months and years. So what will the rising of mortgage interest rates mean to a family looking to purchase a home in the coming months? It all begins with the qualification for a mortgage loan. One is not qualified to purchase a home at a specific purchase price. One is qualified for a mortgage payment. There are four parts to a mortgage payment. There is principal, interest, taxes and insurance (PITI). The amount borrowed and the interest rate determines the principal and interest. The taxes and insurance will fluctuate depending on a specific home. If a person is qualified for a $3,200.00 monthly payment, and if the taxes are $1,000.00 a month and insurance is $100.00, the monthly payment, principal and interest, can be a maximum of $2,100.00. If the

With the surety of rising interest rates, it may make more sense to purchase now rather than to try to save more for later.

interest rate was 4% the loan amount that this person can be qualified for is $440,000.00. If rates go up to 4.5%, this same person can only qualify for a mortgage loan of $414,000.00. A difference of $26,000.00! Now let’s add a little more confusion. If the home that is found has taxes of $1,250.00 per month ($15,000.00 a year) with the lower interest rate, the loan amount would be reduced by $52,000.00, a loan only of $388,000.00 and with the higher interest rate, a reduction of $49,000.00 for a $365,000.00 Loan amount. All these monthly payments equaled $3,200.00. Now that we can

clearly see the effect of higher interest rates, does this mean that if one is shopping for a home, they should make a quick decision now? That I cannot tell you. I can tell you is that if one is thinking about purchasing a home, they should get qualified now to see what their options are. With the surety of rising interest rates, it may make more sense to purchase now rather than to try to save more for later, because it may not be possible to out-save the pace of home values going up coupled with higher interest rates. I also would strongly advise anyone who was pre-qualified for a mortgage loan and has not yet bought a home, to review the pre-qualification to make sure that the estimated figures, purchase price and interest rates are on target. It is not pretty to fall in love with a home just to find out that one cannot close because of market changes.
