I just recently had a very bad shopping experience. I went to two different stores to make a large purchase, worth several hundred dollars, and I went relaxed, rested, and well fed, with a smile on my face. I was in a great mood- otherwise I might have ended up in tears at the treatment I received. I mean, how hard is it to SMILE at a customer? How hard is it to say things like, “No problem! I can do that for you!” or “Let me help you with that!” Why do I have to be made to feel that my being in your store is a burden for you? After all, I came to offer you my hard-earned money, and I was doing absolutely nothing bizarre, annoying, or rude. In fact, I was probably one of your most pleasant customers, thanking you for any little thing you did- even if you did it with a scowl. Is it too much to expect you do your job- the right way? My kids had a blast with the candle activity, but we learned the hard way that these candles should not be left burning alone in a glass candle holder... thankfully, the exploding glass only resulted in a slightly burned table cloth, and not worse! While I'm not really a fan of goat cheese, I improvised and made the goat cheese salad featured in Issue #26 by substituting the goat cheese with mozzarella sticks, each cut into about seven pieces. The result was mouthwatering! While I didn't yet get to try any of the recipes which were on the children's menu in Issue #27, I clipped them and I hope to try them soon; they all look like they're worth a try! Before I could process the news that my brother was niftar, I was already searching for the first flight out to Los Angeles to attend his levaya. I knew I just had to be there, but the airlines apparently didn’t get the memo. The only seat available was on a flight over 6 hours later. Add the 6 hours of flight time, and I would arrive after the levaya was done.

A GARBAGE SOLUTION

Upon taking my mail today, I saw an envelope from the Village of Kaser, where I live. It included a picture of the property on which I am a tenant, with boxes strewn around at the garbage house, unfolded and messy. In the letter, they informed me that our property is not being kept according to the maintenance regulations of the village, and if it doesn't improve, they may need to provide property maintenance, which will be added to next year's tax bill. In the letter, they included instructions on properly folding and tying together the boxes. While the picture wasn't from my side of the house, and I do try to fold my boxes and put them out just before pickup, I was delighted to see that our complaints were taken seriously by the municipality and that something was getting done! I'm looking forward to a cleaner Monsey!

SO, WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC HYPNOSIS? By Esty Weiss

Clarifying Confusion About Hypnosis When you hear the word “hypnosis,” do you cringe? Do you shy away from the very idea of such a thing? Do you consider hypnosis a therapy that only certain types of people do? Some of you may never have even heard the word before; or perhaps you have, and you’re not sure what exactly it means. There are two main reasons why there is so much confusion regarding hypnosis.

REASON 1: You’ve never been hypnotized before, which has left you clueless as to what it really is. The word “hypnosis” itself sounds strange, and it doesn’t explain what hypnosis entails in the least, so you may be projecting your personal feelings on the topic.

REASON 2: It’s possible that you’ve heard about (or maybe even watched) stage hypnosis, which is performed for entertainment purposes, and is often blamed for giving “therapeutic hypnosis” a bad reputation. Ignorance is largely responsible for the confusion. Let’s take a potato, for example: you can put a potato in a soup, make french fries, mash it, juice the potato raw, or simply use it as potato starch. Each option has its own specific taste and texture – even though each alternative comes from the same thing-a potato. Keep this analogy in mind the next time you consider hypnosis. You’ll see that there are a number of different forms of hypnosis that apply to different cases. Stage hypno-

Stage hypnosis, which is performed for entertainment purposes, is often blamed for giving “therapeutic hypnosis” a bad reputation.

It all boils down to getting the client very relaxed, and accessing his or her subconscious mindwhich is very open and receptive when a person is relaxed. It’s important for you to know that no hypnotist in the world can make you do or say anything against your will during hypnosis! You are in total control of the situation. You know exactly what’s going on throughout the entire process. When you experience hypnosis, you are just in a very deep, mellow, relaxed state. And in fact, you are actually in hypnosis many times during the day: when you daydream, for example, or when you are very focused on something, or right before you drift off to sleep at night. Hypnosis is, in essence, a very comfortable, enjoyable experience. When you let yourself become that relaxed, your subconscious mind opens itself up to new possibilities and powerful suggestions! You operate at only 10 percent of your full capacity on a conscious level, since the

other 90 percent comes from the subconscious and unconscious parts of your mind. This, of course, will have a direct effect on your habits and behavior. That being said, you can now see that if you’re trying to drop weight, and you keep on sabotaging your own efforts (meaning you consciously want to lose weight and be healthy, only to binge on two doughnuts), you literally went and did something against your own self! A major reason why people act against their own true will is that they want to lose weight on a conscious level, but their subconscious mind is not on the same page! It’s loaded with deepseated thoughts like: I won’t lose weight even if I try; I’ll just gain everything back; It’s Chanukah and I want to treat myself; or I will start tomorrow, or Sunday… All these thoughts are deeply ingrained in that subconscious part of the mind. So, in order to change your behaviors or habits, you need to change your thoughts first – and that is exactly what hypnosis seeks to accomplish! It’s a very effective way of making contact with a tremendous reservoir of unrecognized potential, strength and power.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU MIGHT HEAR WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE HYPNOSIS? First of all, the best way to experience hypnosis is in person. You and the hypnotist will begin the session by discussing some of the things you are struggling with in particular. Is it chocolate cravings? Are you searching for food mostly in the evening? Maybe afternoons are your weakness, or perhaps you simply get hungry when you’re stressed out. Whatever your greatest struggles may be, the hypnotist will make different suggestions while you’re in a very relaxed state. You might hear something along the lines of the following: You will only enjoy a small piece of chocolate… You will be highly motivated to keep your body thin and healthy… You will lose all your weight and keep it off…. Another option is for you to listen to a hypnotic weightloss CD, which you can do in the comfort of your own home, on your own time. The most crucial part of hypnosis – the defining factor in whether it helps affect your subconscious mind – is to do it as often as you

possibly can. The consistency of hearing the same suggestions again and again is highly effective. You may be shocked to find that one day, seemingly out of nowhere, you drop your fork between bites, and you chew your food naturally instead of consciously thinking about it. Hypnosis changes your habits at the deepest level possible, so you don’t need to use your willpower to do so. Instead, your subconscious mind will automatically guide you into doing certain things. This is similar to the way you can get dressed and brush your teeth, or even wash the dishes, without even thinking about the task. In other words, you’ll do what you need to do without having to think about it, the same way you will by making a habit out of enjoying smaller amounts of food, chewing more slowly, subsiding your cravings, etc. So go ahead – you deserve 25 minutes of uninterrupted relaxation. You deserve to spend some time with yourself- in serenity, and you will start seeing amazing changes you’d never have thought possible before you began hypnosis. Parshas Vayigash We all grew up with dreams for our future. Dreams vary by the individual, but most people assume that life will follow the “natural” order. Of course we will get married, and the marriage will be perfect. Of course we will have children, and the children will be successful. Of course the entire family will be healthy. Of course we will have enough parnassah. Then we grow up, and we find out that these basic assumptions are not guaranteed. We might not get married. And if we do, we might not have children. And if we do, they might not turn out the way we had hoped. Serious illness can strike. Parnassah is not guaranteed. How do we respond to major disappointments in life? Many people respond with denial. This wasn’t meant for me. This must be a mistake. It is very hard to accept that our life might deviate from the ‘natural’ order. It can’t be possible that I am meant to go through life alone. It can’t be possible that I will not have children. It can’t be possible that I have a child who is sick, or disabled, or seriously rebellious. In short, we run away from the reality. Yosef’s brothers faced a deviation in life’s usual order. In the usual order – indeed, the correct order – the younger

brother shows honor to the older brother, and the child shows honor to his parents. When Yosef presented his dreams back in Parshas Vayeishev, dreams in which his brothers and even his parents bowed to him, his brothers were deeply disturbed. They decided that he had the din of a

Ultimately, they chose to sell him into slavery. Yosef’s brothers were tzaddikim, but they made a mistake about Yosef because they had negiyus in the situation. They decided that Yosef had the din of a rodef, but they were not objective enough to make that decision on their own because the situation was so personal to them. They should have con-

sulted daas Torah (in their case, their father). So, with pure intentions, they mistakenly ran away from the deviation in life’s order, and took action against it. In this week’s parsha, Yosef reveals himself to his brothers, and they learn at last the fate of the brother they had sold into slavery. They learn more than that; they learn the outcome of Yosef’s dreams, in fulfillment of the passuk, “We will see what will become of his dreams.” (Bereishis 37:20) The dreams had clearly come true. The brothers had, in fact, bowed to their younger brother. Often, when we run from a situation by taking action against it, Hashem uses our very actions themselves to bring about the situation we had been trying to prevent. If we try to run, Hashem makes sure we run to the very thing from which we are fleeing. In this week’s parsha, Yosef’s brothers learn that the direct consequence of their having sold Yosef into slavery was that he became a ruler over them, and they bowed to him. By trying to do away with Yosef’s dreams, their actions led to the events through which the dreams were fulfilled. Similarly, Yonah Hanavi tried to run from an uncomfortable situation, and in so doing brought that situation about.

When Yonah was instructed to speak to the people of Ninveh, the meforshim explain that he ran away from the job because he did not want to bring gentiles to make teshuvah at a time when he knew the Jews would not. He fled instead, taking a ship towards Tarshish. Along the way, he brought the gentiles on the

He ended up doing the very thing from which he had been running. We cannot run from Hashem. We cannot run from His destiny for us in life. We cannot throw off whatever burdens have been placed upon our shoulders, no matter how difficult they are to bear, and no matter how far they deviate from what we had dreamed. But, there is good news. We are not left to shoulder our burdens alone. In this week’s parsha, Yaakov is afraid to travel down to Mitzrayim, and Hashem reassures him: “I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up…” (Bereishis 45:4) No matter where we go in life, Hashem is there with us. No matter how far we fall, chas v’shalom, Hashem does not abandon us. We cannot run from Him, but neither will He run from us. He may place heavy burdens upon us, but He is with us every step of the way. And He will bring us up in the end.

If the purpose of putting in the pins is to avoid the sheitel falling out of shape whilst on the shaitel head, then it is muttar, providing that one does not push it back to the original shape, but just retains the present shape.

Am I allowed to remove the plastic or thread that connects a pair of new socks if I need the socks for Shabbos?

A thread may not be removed. If one can thread the end of the plastic tie through a hole without tearing the hole or the sock, then it is permitted.

looked out the large window while tears dripped and ran at the sides of my mouth. Jerusalem had known many wars. There was so much we’d lost. Every time the landscape changed, life continued on, lessons were learned, we adapted. I had once told Duvid that I want him to not end up like Velvel Parnass. A laugh and smile broke out on my face pushing my sorrow away. How ironic. We do always wish for life as we know it. And it keeps changing; it’s a dynamic, shifting scene. Chuna would come home. His body angled in terrible poses, his muscles tense and rigid from so much lying around where once he was the goat that skipped fences and ran with the sandstorms. Where would I put him? The question came from making room for the idea that he would be home, with us, a part of our family. Where would he go? He couldn’t share the window ledge he had always shared with his two younger brothers; where would we settle him? A mattress, just for him. We would have to buy one. Where would we put it? What would happen in the mornings? I’d have to do therapy with him, bend his legs with gentleness and quiet power. I wanted to pour all my love into this new Chu-

na I was only welcoming into my heart just now. I felt very overwhelmed. Did we need to buy a wheelchair? It was only days before Malka’la’s chasunah. Where would he be at the wedding? Where would he sleep? I had just given Malka’la her own bed, by asking Faiga to double up with Perala and Dovi. It was already crowded, the household reaching a busy and energetic pitch. Would I always feel too overwhelmed to make room for my own children? It was my main priority in life, to be there for my children. And yet the most neglected one. I went back to Chuna’s bedside. His eyes were misdirected to a high focal point somewhere near his eyelids. “Chuna,” I said. I took out the food I had brought along, dipped a small spoon in, brought it to his lips. He took it readily, his tongue making an effort to capture it before most came out from one corner of his lips.

I planted my lips on his fingers, grazing him with a kiss. Maternal love is such a multihued thing. I felt it, for the first time, envelop me with a fierce desire to give this boy anything, to do anything it took to make his life, as it was now, the best it could be.

BUILDING MY DREAM HOUSE By Laya Schecter Zryl Laya grew up in Monsey. “We came there on the Mayflower,” is how she proudly puts it. Following her early married years in Lakewood, her family moved back to Monsey until their move to Eretz Yisroel in 1969. This is her enchanting story. I began planning my dream house sixty five years ago when, as a kid of ten, I fell in love with houses. I still vividly recall our move

to Ellish Parkway way back then. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. A house! A real house! After living in a bungalow on Old Nyack Turnpike for two years – summers and winters - our new house on Milton Place was paradise. I loved the Turnpike, I really, truly did; the Yeshiva of Spring Valley right across the street, the Halbergs as neighbors and the Mashinskys next door. In real estate terms, our abode was “cozy,” and I loved its large sprawling front lawn. I can even wax nostalgic when I recall shivering in my bed during the long,

cold winter nights… then waking up in the morning and running downstairs to be the first to stand next to the iron grate above the furnace. Ahhh… to bask in the warmth coming up from below as the entire house was heated. Moving to Fanley Woods was a step up and presented a golden opportunity for my budding interest in real estate. Soon the Mendlowitz family moved nearby (we’re talking about the 1950s) and I discovered, in their daughter Nechoma, a partner to my passion. Every Shabbos I would walk from my house on Milton Place to The Mendlowitz’s house on Suzanne Drive. The most direct way was through a narrow path in the forest (what is now Elaine Place). “Aren’t you afraid to walk through the woods alone?” I was asked. “Who, me? A-f-f-r-ra-i-d?” I answered, feeling as brave as little Red Riding Hood on her way to Grandma’s. Eventually, the forest came down and the woods gave way to homes. Nechoma and I would go from house to house, inspecting the work as it progressed. “This looks like it’s going to be a kitchen,” we mused. “This for sure is the living room,” we teenaged pseudo-contractors espoused. I don’t think there’s a house on Elaine and Francis Place, Ronald and Nancy Drive that we didn’t traipse through during those years. I recall the week of parshas Lech L’cha when my father

taught us an interesting p’shat. The Torah describes in detail how Avraham Avinu walked the length and breadth of Eretz Yisrael, mentioning by name all the many places he visited. “What was he, a tourist?” my father asked. He then went on to explain: “By traveling throughout the land and covering the territory step by step, Avraham Avinu was mekadesh Eretz Yisroel, readying the land for the generations to come.” Like Avraham Aveinu, here we were, Nechoma and I, meandering through homes that forty years later would become part and parcel of totally frum neighborhoods! The years passed by. My dear friend Nechoma became Mrs. Weldler and I became Mrs. Zryl. Soon we each had a home of our own and our talents for painting and wallpapering came into being. This too, has a history. It was actually Nechoma’s mother, Dina, who started it all and I guess the genes passed over to Nechoma (to her sister, and brother, too) who showed me how easy it was to do-it-yourself. We became so proficient, that one day we brainstormed about going into business together. Maybe we should pool our resources, buy up old houses, renovate them and resell them for profit? I remember the day I came running into her house, wildly waving a copy of a homemaking magazine. “Read this!” I exclaimed, with excitement in my voice and stars

in my eyes. “Here’s an article about two ladies who turned their hobby into a fortune! They’d buy dilapidated houses, fix them up and resell them for twice the price. If they can do it, why can’t we?” Well, we didn’t do it, but the idea kept us going for quite a while. Years later, when I moved to Eretz Yisroel, I met a talented friend who was very into home improvements. We seriously considered becoming “shiputznikim,” but inasmuch as the market had been cornered by men, we somehow felt that no one in Eretz Yisroel would hire two frum ladies to fix up their flats. But the dream of taking a shmata and turning it into a palace continued to lay dormant, as

organic vegetables, flowers... Oh how I longed for a lush vegetable garden like the one we had in the backyard of our home on Maple Avenue (thanks to our overflowing septic tank which kept it well fertilized!). Besides, don’t we have our children here to take care of us in our old age? (A friend of mine once told me, “When we’ll be old and gray and have to decide near which child to live, we will have our children draw straws - and the one who loses gets us!”) So on one of our Yom Tov visits we started looking around. Just across from the shtiebel, on the ground floor, was a nice cozy apartment- and it was vacant. Maybe it was for sale? My husband went down to the housing agency that in essence, owned the apartment. “Are you a new immigrant?” he was asked. “No,” he answered. After being in the country for over thirty years we couldn’t qualify as such. “You don’t look like a newlywed,” the clerk intoned, “But maybe you’re very, very poor?” Well…um… not very, very. “Sorry,” was the bad news, “you’re not eligible to buy this flat.” Years passed and the flat remained unsold. One day the apartment went on the market for $20,000 - that’s right, this isn’t a typographical error. There is no zero missing; T-w-e-n-t-y thousand dollars… and everyone was eligible to apply, the rich, the poor, young and old-timers alike. We quickly submitted the preliminary forms and when we asked the Gerrer Rebbe if we should go

As my husband and I got on in years, I realized that we would not be able to walk up the 80 steps to our apartment in Haifa forever. What would happen should that day come? So in planning ahead, we toyed with the idea of eventually moving to Chazor, a small town in northern Eretz Yisroel. For fifteen years we had spent Succos with our married children in the Gerrer Chasidishe community, located in the Galil. We loved the area. Wouldn’t it be nice to spend our golden years here? we thought. A view of Mount Chermon from your window, no thru traffic, peace and quiet (How can you live there, Ima, it’s so boring!), a back yard with lemons and oranges -yours for the picking,

Its condition was absolutely decrepit. The flat hadn’t been lived in for years. Like its seven sisterflats, each had been used by the kehilla for various purposes; one for baking matzos erev Pesach, one as a tape library for daf yomi cassettes, another for the cheder kindergarten… you get the idea. All the electrical wiring had to be replaced. The water pipes were thoroughly rusted. The floors were stained and spotted. The bathroom had to be ripped out. The windows needed replacing, and the walls were begging to be painted. In short, it had all the makings of… My Dream House! We had ten beautiful years living the dream in Chazor. It was a house which was truly a tribute to my unforgettable friend, Nechoma Weldler, a”h. It is she who gets the credit for the dream house that came to be. Following a colorful career in public relations/fundraising, Laya translated several books, most recently a biography for teens on Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, “The Rebbetzin Loved Me!” followed by “Rav Elyashiv”. How do you feel about winter?

Winter is beautiful, but how I wish it were a shorter season. I find the cold invigorating; I'd choose it over the heat anytime. During the long winter evenings, I enjoy quality family time.

I hate this cold, wet, dark season.

2. Snow! Your thoughts?

I await the first snow like a little kid. I panic when I think of snow days - school's out! I love the snow, but I hate the messy aftermath. I am always worried about my family's safety in the snow (driving, playing with snow, school buses). 3. What do you feel about winter wear?

I hate the extra weight of coats and boots (but appreciate the warmth). I love layering up. I like my coat- except when on an overheated bus! I like the fact that I don’t have to get formally dressed and can cover up with a coat. 4. How do you attach children's winter accessories to their coats?

Good old-fashioned clips I always label everything, so however they are attached, they make their way back home. I sew them on; it is the only way they don't get lost. I am too lazy for a long-term solution, but I have to replace lost hats and gloves periodically. 5. What temperature setting is your heat on during the winter?

Fluctuates according to weather Above 72 degrees Below 70 degrees Different members of the family prefer different temperatures.

I’m sure I’m not the only mother who cannot find one supper that will satisfy the entire family; if one child loves it, another one won’t look at it. I wouldn’t be completely honest if I told you that these three chicken suppers are popular across the board, but they are as close as you can get to a successful supper. Majority of my children will eat it happily and the rest will eat it begrudgingly. For me, that makes each of them a true winner! I hope you enjoy them. SEASO NED CHEF

Seasoned Chef: When the recipe calls for cutting chicken cutlets into strips or cubes, do so before the chicken is fully defrosted. It cuts more easily with smoother results.

4 chicken cutlets, cubed 1/3 cup flour 1 tablespoon oil 1 onion, diced 1 red pepper, diced 1 green pepper, diced

1 yellow pepper, diced 1 orange pepper, diced 1 can mushrooms, chopped ¾ cup duck sauce

CHICKEN CUBES WITH SWEET VEGETABLE SAUCE

Preheat oven to 350. Shake chicken cubes in flour and place in lined 9x13 pan. Set aside. Meanwhile heat oil in a medium saucepan. Sauté onion until wilted. Add peppers and chopped mushrooms and sauté until vegetables are soft, about 20 minutes. Add duck sauce and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Pour vegetables over chicken and bake covered for 40 minutes. Serve over rice.

AS IOWA GOES, SO GOES THE NATION Looking at the schedule, you will immediately note that it is a stacked schedule. The first primary is in Iowa, followed by New Hampshire the next week, and so on with most states, who hold their primaries on different days. (With a few exceptions such as Super Tuesday, which this year will have 14 states participating in the primaries on the same day.) What effect does that have on elections? In the polls that we have been running for the past few weeks, the focus has continuously been on Iowa and New Hampshire. The candidates are currently doing most of their heavy campaigning in those states; that is where they are visiting and spending their money. The candidates do this because it is common knowledge that as Iowa goes, so goes the nation. History has shown that candidates that do

well and have a strong showing in Iowa are more likely to continue on to win their partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nomination. Keep in mind that a majority is not needed. All a candidate needs is to show significant number of supporters. They needs to show that they are a force to be reckoned with and should be taken seriously. Many voters feel more confident voting for a candidate that has done well in an actual election. Politicians, as well as movers and shakers, who have been reluctant to throw their support behind one candidate or another will also do so after the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries. This is called the Bandwagon Effect. People feel more comfortable doing something others have already done. You will also see the lower

tier candidates dropping out of the race and endorsing candidates who are still running. This narrows down the choices for voters from later states, thus giving remaining candidates a better chance to win. The way the system is set gives an unfair advantage to the early state who, election cycle after election cycle, have candidates visiting them and shaping their policies around what they believe will help them win early state elections. There have been several attempts to change the current setup, which so far have been unsuccessful. In recent years, many states have moved their elections earlier, but Iowa and New Hampshire remain the defining states in the primary elections.

THE TRUMP FACTOR Love or loathe him, the 2016 election has been all about Donald Trump. Much of the media’s focus has been on what he said, what he did, or how well he is doing in the polls. Trump is a completely unusual candidate. Generally, if you ask a voter what he wants to see in a presidential candidate, he will say someone who is serious, level headed, smart, prepared, and experienced: “presidential.” Trump is anything but. He is loud and brash, impulsive and - at times - buffoonish, spitting out what comes to mind at that moment and retracting his statements a day or two later. He has had no qualms insulting other candidates and anyone else that stood in his way, calling people names and discrediting anyone who has been critical of him. And yet, for months on end, he has managed to maintain a significant lead in national polls. What is the secret to his suc-

They do not think there is a possibility of Trump winning the general election. Polls have supported this theory with Hillary, the presumptive Democratic candidate, leading Trump by as much as 11% in some polls. Many went so far as to say that Trump, who has had close ties with the Clintons in the past, has been planted by them to take away what has looked like a sure election from the Republicans. This belief has been exacerbated after Trump refused to promise that he would not run on an independent ticket, which could easily hand Hillary the election. Recently the deck of cards has started to shake. In the past few weeks, Ted Cruz has been inching closer to Trump in Iowa polls. And after a tremendous gaffe by Trump, declaring he would ban any and all Muslims from entering the very country that was founded on religious freedom, Cruz has surged ahead in Iowa polls with as much as 10%. Trump has reacted in typical Trump fashion, labeling Cruz a “maniac” and declaring that polls should not be believed and he should start doing his own polls. Establishment Republicans, though, have heaved a huge sigh of relief, hoping that this trend continues and that their Trump nightmare has finally come to an end.

INTRODUCTION Whether you are starting from scratch or remodeling your current house, drafting a plan is the first and most important step in creating a home that will best suit your needs. There is no “one size fits all” here, because when it comes to home design, it is all about accommodating your needs, your comfort and your personal taste.

THE ENTRY First impressions mean a lot, and when it comes to home design, the entry is priority number one. It’s the first thing your family will see when they walk in through the door every day; your entry sets the tone for your home. Your entry, which takes you to all parts of your home, is the hub of your house- so it is important to create a space that puts your best foot forward. How much room do you need to set aside for a proper entry so that you can welcome guests without bumping into people? A standard door is three feet wide and you need to allow an extra two feet on either side to be able to walk in and open and close the door comfortably. Additionally, you need an extra three feet of space in front of you as you enter, making the minimum size for a proper entry seven feet wide by six feet deep, although custom designs can always be created to fashion a comfortable space that suits your space constraints. A neat, clean and organized entry is a must. Consider the following tips for your entry: • Maximize natural light whenever possible to make the space open and inviting. • Organized coat closets are crucial; if possible, set up a side entrance with a mud room for use by family members. If you have no space for a mud room, create separate coat closets for adults and children. • Don’t have your entry opening into rooms that are typically cluttered, like your kitchen and playroom. • Break up long entries with an unusual shape or design to add character • Make sure that no upstairs rooms, including bedrooms, bathrooms, or laundry rooms, have doors that face the entry because of privacy concerns and neatness. • Situate the powder room so that it is easily accessible. • Install night lights so that even in the dark of night, anyone walking through the area can see where they are going.

FOCAL POINTS A focal point is a single, specific area in a room, deliberately designed to catch the eye. A crucial component of home design, focal points are pleasing to the eye and create the style of each room, instead of each area presenting as a cluttered image. CHOOSING A FOCAL POINT

It is preferable to choose only one focal point per entry. There are several types of lovely focal points to choose from.

STAIRCASE

Choose something attractive and comfortable, with steps that are deep enough and not overly high, with a minimum of one landing to minimize injuries in case of any falls. Location is crucial when it comes to stairs, so try to situate your staircase near the most frequently used rooms, and place it where it will not impede access to any other rooms. Allocate enough space in your entry to accommodate four people with enough additional room for a fifth person to pass in order to access the stairs.

HALLWAY

Adding a design on the ceiling or floor in the hallway can add dimension and texture. Using more than one color paint can also make an exciting design statement. Moldings and niches are excellent ways to add impact to your walls, and if you have the space, add in a well chosen piece of furniture or some plants for extra warmth. It goes without saying that proper lighting is essential.

WINDOWS Available in all sizes and shapes, windows make a great focal point, and the bigger the window the better. Make sure that you situate windows in an empty area, with no distractions, and feel free to add transoms for additional interest. Windows along a staircase leading upwards provide plenty of light and lots of great visuals.

SKYLIGHTS Sometimes the best focal points are literally above our heads. Skylights are a great choice in a hallway, where the opening can be placed dead center over an open area, or over a staircase. Make sure that the opening is adequately sized to create interest. Best of all, even small skylights can have a dramatic impact with a larger-sized ceiling opening that makes a fabulous statement. Awful sniffling, sneezing, and achy muscles – is that winter for you? It seems it’s a myth that cold weather causes this. So why IS winter the common-cold season? It’s because of what we do when it gets cold. When the weather gets cold we stay indoors, confined amongst other people and their germs. The air gets recycled, and that’s how they germs spread. The cold actually does the opposite; it kills the bacteria and viruses. As we see, in a colder winter, there’s less disease.

OCTOBER 2011- On Shabbos, Erev Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan 5772, an unexpected October snowstorm dumped about a foot of snow onto Monsey. The weight of the snow on the trees, which were still full of fall leaves, caused many broken power lines knocking out the power to hundreds of Monsey residents. School was out for the better part of a week, and hundreds shivered in the cold for days until their power was restored. JANUARY 2003 – Many people remember the massive accumulation of snow during this blizzard, especially those, like I, who had to attend a wedding on the night of the storm. Hatzalah and other kindhearted individuals with fourwheel-drive vehicles were transporting the chasan, kallah, their families, and wedding guests all night. Surprisingly, the halls were warm, toasty, and full of guests! JANUARY 1996- This massive blizzard had major effects, completely immobilizing the entire area. It snowed heavily for approximately sixteen hours, and by the time the snow calmed down, the accumulation was waist-high. There were many stranded people, and last-minute sheva brachos were held near where the new couples were, due to travel being entirely impossible and walking by foot treacherous.

In just a few days, on December 22, (which falls out on Asara B’Teves), will be the Winter Solstice. On this day, we in the Northern Hemisphere will experience the shortest day of the year.

Is the abundance of dark giving you the winter blues? In many places that are a part of the Polar Regions (those places that are either very north or very south), night can last as long as a few months! One such a place is in the United States in Atqasuk, Alaska, U.S.A., where the sun doesn’t rise at all from November 23 until January 18! This happens because the polar region is tilted away from the sun, so the sunlight doesn’t reach northernmost areas. Polar Nights occur in many populated areas of the Northern Hemisphere including northern parts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Finland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden.

SUMMER VACATION – NOW?

You better believe it! While we New Yorkers, and all of those who occupy our region, are stocking up on hats and shawls, shovels and hot cocoa, our counterparts down south (like Brasil and Argentina) are enjoying their summer vacation! For the Northern Hemisphere (where we are), the winter months are December, January, and February – as per the meteorologists’ definition of winter as the three calendar months with the lowest average temperatures. For the Southern Hemisphere, it is June, July, and August. When we will be basking in the sun the cold will hit there.

The lowest ever recorded temperature in Monsey was in January of 1961, when the temperature reached 15 degrees below zero. East Ramapo School District has four built-in snow dates. If that quota is not filled, students in the district usually get a day off from school in May. In recent years, the latest school cancellation due to snow was in 2007, when there was a snowstorm after Purim! Don’t blame your lack of self-control for the excess winter weight piled on during the long nights. The cold is known to increase a person’s appetite. Since unfortunately most of us do not crave whole wheat pita bread and carrot sticks, the average person gains 1-2 pounds each winter season.

BLIZZARD OR SNOWSTORM? Not every strong snow storm is a blizzard. To be termed a blizzard, the snow must reduce visibility to ¼ of a mile and winds must be at least 35 mph. The storm also must last at least 3 hours. If any of these specific conditions is not met, it is just a snowstorm. But all is not lost; school can still be canceled!

With sunrise being at 7:18:28 AM and sunset at 4:31:11PM, we will have only 9 hours, 12 minutes, and 43 seconds of sunlight. For those who are not fans of winter, take heart. From here on, the days will become longer and longer. For winter lovers, there's good news also: The coldest temperatures are still to come. The solstice marks the first day of winter; make sure to hoard your winter facts before the real cold hits!

to have a boot try-on session. Everyone is home, so you could figure out who is getting whose last year’s boots. Make note of anything that needs to be fixed, and put the shoe repair shop on the next day’s to-do list.

GLOVES AND MITTENS Once it is determined that everyone has a pair, don’t get rid of the extra ones, even if they do not match anyone’s current coat. When Shloimy loses a mitten in a snow bank and insists on continuing building his fort, you’ll be glad you saved those gloves.

SNOW REMOVAL EQUIPMENT AND DEICING SUPPLIES If you have a rideon snow blower, make sure it’s in good working condition and fueled. An electric snow blower should be checked for frayed cords. If you use a regular shovel, make sure the handles are not loose or broken off. While you’re checking those, see if you have enough children’s shovels. Move all snow removal equipment to the garage or basement. They are of absolutely no use if they remain in the shed, which may become inaccessible because of the snow. Stock up on rock salt or whichever chemical you use when the walkways are slippery. It doesn’t spoil, and you’re not looking for a repeat of last year, when you drove miles, and paid double for an inferior quality deicer.

ACTIVITIES Check your arts and craft supplies, and replenish as necessary. Plain white paper plates, with cotton balls glued onto them, make perfect snowmen to occupy the little ones. Invest in enough child-friendly scissors, some different shaped hole punchers and lots of colored paper and crayons. Sure, they’ll be making a mess, but they will also be making fond memories. Snow days are perfect days to bake with the kids. Have all basic ingredients in the house, and some extras, like different colored sprinkles and candies

with which to decorate cookies or cupcakes. For an original activity, bake hamentashen. Yes, you read that right; hamentashen. Prepare the dough while the kids are playing in the snow. Get the kids into the spirit by putting on a Purim tape. If any hamentashen are left after the kids “tasted,” double-bag and freeze them. As Purim draws closer, you’ll be happy to have some of your baking done. A snow day is also a great opportunity to tackle a chore you’ve been putting off for too long. It could be sorting the box of photos and putting them into albums, or sorting all the miscellaneous screws and nails. Just be realistic, and don’t bite off more than you, and the children, can chew. If your toy closet could use reorganizing, give the kids an incentive to do it. Put on some lively music to get them to work quickly. Promise to dance with them if it gets done by a certain time. Take “before and after” pictures to post on the door.

The snow is inevitable, but, like anything else in life, it’s best to be prepared.

FOOD Be prepared for hungry kids on snow days. For a good treat after playing in the snow, make chocolate lollipops. Melt good quality milk chocolate, and pour into one-ounce cups. Top with sprinkles, and stick in a lollipop stick. Hide it in the freezer until needed. (This could also be part of your early pre-snowstorm preparations.) When the children have lined up the boots by the door and hung the coats and gloves up to dry, treat them with this simple hot chocolate. Give each child a cup of hot milk and a lollypop. By dipping the

chocolate lollipop in the milk, the liquid becomes a delicious hot chocolate with little effort. Instead of making a vegetable salad, let the children prepare a salad bar. Let them divide the chores, according to age and ability. The older children should cut the vegetables, and the younger ones could help by setting it out nicely, and choosing add-ons, like nuts, croutons etc. That will be one day you won’t have to prod them to eat their daily greens. Be sure to have charged camera batteries and enough space on your memory card. A snow day provides many photo opportunities, both outdoors and in the house. At the end of the day, when the kids have helped you clean up, and the little ones are bathed and in pajamas, let them review “the day in pictures.” It’s a relaxing way to end a wonderful day. As you send them off to bed, thank Hashem for keeping them warm and safe. Try to go to sleep early ,too, and as you doze off to the music of the snowplows outside, fantasize kissing the back of the school bus tomorrow morning, as it takes your precious cargo back to school.

After all, it’s the homey, good times that leave those nostalgic memories which we love to indulge in. Feel free to vary and twitch the activities to your specifications and age group.

Kids naturally love to create. Encourage their artistic hobbies by sticking a huge sheet of contact paper on the wall with the sticky side facing out. You can use painters’ tape or masking tape so your walls don’t suffer. Kids will enjoy utilizing the sticky surface to create scenes and pictures with various household objects. In addition to the ideas pictured, try cotton balls and Q-tips to make snowmen and snowflakes, or assorted lengths of yarn for imaginative “drawing.” Colored straws, sequins, bottle caps, and cut pieces of color paper allow for endless imagination. A marker can be used to draw a picture outline and various objects can fill it up. You’ll be amazed at what kids can come up with when left to their fantasy.

Growing up on the story of Yosef Moker Shabbos, which child doesn’t dream of catching a live fish? While this activity has slim chances for diamond surprises, you’ll be surprised how much fun kids can have while fishing in their own playroom. No water, no slippery fins and scales, and definitely no wiggly worms for bait are needed. Simply cut a basic fish shape out of color paper (or felt or craft paper, or other if you want it to last) and attach a paper clip to the mouth end. Tie string to a stick and attach a magnet to the free end of the string. Place all fish in the “pond” (can be the floor, a

colored paper, small magnet, paper clips, string, stick

bucket, bathtub, coffee table…) and decide on a place for the fisherman to stand. (Distance should be relevant to age.) Cast out, and aim for a catch! Optional variations: 1) Fish can have points for competitive group games. Double the points for a double catch. 2) Fish can be used as a great review for children who need practice with their alphabet, reading, etc. Examples: The child will need to catch the fish that has a lowercase b written on it, a fish that says run, or a fish that means sit in Lashon Hakodesh.

Card lacing is one of those vintage games that our grandmothers grew up on. This twist on the original, using foam plates or trays, will leave boys and girls alike punching and poking enthusiastically. You never know, it just might be the beginning of a professional sewing careerâ&#x20AC;ŚDraw a simple picture on a foam plate and kids will love poking holes with a skewer every inch or so. Thread a plastic needle/yarn needle with assorted colors of yarn to bring the picture to life. As an interesting version, cut a hollow circle in the center and punch holes all around. Sew the yarn across the hole to create an artistic effect.

The Tale of a CashStrapped FirstTime Homebuyer HAMMERING OUT THE DETAILS

Last week we met Jacob, looking to purchase a home with just a 3% down payment, exploring the SONYMA mortgage loan On a Wednesday at 4:30pm, five days after delivering my first round of paperwork, I was sitting the lobby of the bank’s offices. The receptionist punctuated the silence with the clacking of her keyboard. Finally, a personage emerged from behind opaque gray glass and clanked toward me. I smiled broadly at her, hoping that I might warm up the austere space with my smile. She took me into a small conference room where I handed over the thick stack of paper I had compiled. “I think you have every document about every aspect of my financial life, but if there is anything else you need, just let me know.” I meant to break the ice, but probably sounded confrontational. Page by page, she scrutinized the billing statements. “This looks good.” “Good, like good-good?” I tried to remain seated and stay calm. “Like good-to-go good?” “Assuming there are no late payments buried in here.”

THE $350,000 QUESTION Primarily, I wanted to know what I could afford to buy. The answer, I was pleased to learn, was $350,000 for a single-family house, or $400,000 for a multi-family house. At this point I could not control my excitement. “That’s great!” I exclaimed. She dropped her chin about a half inch in acknowledgement. I could already see myself on the phone with local realtors asking about homes between $200,000 and $400,000.

I got my preapproval letter after one meeting, two hundred pages of financial documents and three weeks of waiting.

Before I left, I wanted to get clear on two things: First, was the state really going to give me money towards the down payment? Yes, they would. Three percent of the purchase price up to $15,000 dollars. I wouldn’t see this money until I was ready to close. As long as I lived in the house for 10 years, I would never have to pay it back. If I sold before that, I would have to pay it back, but without interest. Second, I wanted to know exactly how much cash I needed to close. The loan officer said I should plan on paying about $24,000 in closing costs, so I’d need 9 percent total ($36,000) with a third of that coming from down payment assistance. Finally, I needed a reserve of about $6,000, as a cushion in case I lost my job or experienced other types of financial hardship.



MY PREAPPROVAL LETTER

Less than a week later, the loan officer emailed me letters of preapproval, for either a single or multi-family home. Now, each time I request to see a house, the seller’s broker requests this letter as a way to validate that I am a qualified buyer. Typically, preapproval letters are valid for 60 to 90 days, during which the bank will lock in an interest rate. With SONYMA loans, the interest rate is fixed, and does not change as frequently as the market rate. This is good in that I don’t have to worry much about the volatility of interest rates. However, that is only because the SONYMA rate, while more stable, tends to be slightly higher than the market rate. In the end, I got my preapproval letter after one meeting, two hundred pages of financial documents and three weeks of waiting. No, I didn’t make a new

Cu best friend in my loan officer, but she has been incredibly helpful in answering my questions. There is a reason she is one of the top performing SONYMA mortgage brokers. It may be months before I settle on a house and it may even be that, by the time I find it, I have enough cash to do it without down payment assistance, but at least this way if the right place comes along, I’m ready a full year sooner than I would be otherwise. ‫מאנסי און איר אומגעגנט זענען באשאנקען‬ ‫געווארן מיט פיל הערליכע בתי‪-‬מדרשים‪ ,‬עס‬ ‫איז כמעט נישט פאראן א חסידי'שער הויף‬ ‫אויפן כדור‪-‬הארץ‪ ,‬וואס זאל נישט האבן קיין‬ ‫פארטרעטער אין מאנסי‪ .‬צוריקקוקנדיג מיט א‬ ‫פופציג יאר צוריק‪ ,‬איז צום באוואונדערן ווי אזוי‬ ‫מאנסי האט זיך אזוי צעוואקסן‪ ,‬אז עס איז פאראן‬ ‫פון אלע סארט ביי אונז אין שטאט‪.‬‬ ‫דער גרעסטער חסידי'שער קהילה‪ ,‬וואס‬ ‫האט דער צענטראל ביי אונז אין שטאט‪ ,‬איז‬ ‫בלי‪-‬ספק דער וויזשניצער קהילה‪ ,‬וואס אונטער‬ ‫זייער השפעה איז מאנסי געווארן א מקום‬ ‫משכן לחסידות‪ .‬אויב האט מען אמאל געזאגט‬ ‫אז וויזשניץ האט מגייר געווען מאראמארש‬ ‫ מיינענדיג ארויסצוברענגען אז זיי האבן‬‫אריינגעברענגט דעם חסידי'שן גייסט אין דער‬ ‫מאראמארערשער אומגעגנט – קען מען מיט‬ ‫רעכט זאגן היינט די זעלבע אויף מאנסי‪ ,‬אז‬ ‫אונטער די השפעה פון וויזשניץ‪ ,‬איז מאנסי‬ ‫געווארן דער חסידי'שער שטאט‪ ,‬בשעת פיל‬ ‫חסידים פון אלע הויפן‪ ,‬האבן זיך ארויסגעצויגן‬ ‫קיין מאנסי‪.‬‬ ‫און די השפעה האלט נאך אן ביזן היינטיגן‬ ‫טאג‪ .‬כסדר האלטן אין איין קומען אידן פון שטאט‪,‬‬ ‫וועלכע זעהען איין דער ישיבת כרכים קשה‪ ,‬און‬ ‫קומען וואוינען אויף מאנסי‪ ,‬אינדרויסן‪ ,‬אונטער די‬ ‫שויס פון נאטור‪.‬‬

‫וויזשניצע קהילה אין מאנסי‪ ,‬קענען מיר דערוועגן‬ ‫שרייבן און שרייבן און קיינמאל נישט ענדיגן‪ .‬מיר‬ ‫וועלן דעריבער כאפן א טעימה קלה און א בליק‬ ‫טון בלויז אויף איין וויזשניצער בית‪-‬המדרש וואס‬ ‫איז סטאנציאנירט ביי אונז אין שטאט‪ ,‬דאס איז‬ ‫דער וויזשניצער בית‪-‬המדרש אויף דאקטאר‬ ‫פרענק‪.‬‬ ‫דער דאזיגער בית‪-‬המדרש איז געגרינדעט‬ ‫געווארן מיט א דרייסיג יאר צוריק‪ ,‬מיט די‬ ‫גוטהייצונג פון כ"ק מרן אדמו"ר שליט"א‪ .‬אין‬ ‫אנהויב איז זי געגרינדעט געווארן אין שטוב‬ ‫פון הרה"ח ר' יעקב משה ראזנפעלד הי"ו אויף‬ ‫‪ 14‬דאקטער פרענק‪ .‬נאך עטליכע חדשים איז‬ ‫אפגעקויפט געווארן דער בנין נעבן זיין שטוב‬ ‫אויף ‪ 12‬דאקטער פרענק‪ .‬דאס איז געווען אן‬ ‫אלטן בנין וואס איז אפגעקויפט געווארן מיט די‬ ‫ברייטע שטיצע פון הרה"ח ר' נפתלי ראזנפעלד‪,‬‬ ‫לע"נ אשתו מרת לאה בת ר' יצחק אייזיק ע"ה‪ .‬ביזן‬ ‫היינטיגן טאג פאררופט זיך דער בנין אויף זייערע‬ ‫נעמען "אהל נפתלי" – "אהל" אלס די אותיות פון‬ ‫"לאה" און נפתלי נאכן נדבן זעלבסט‪ ,‬ר' נפתלי‬ ‫ראזנפעלד ע"ה‪.‬‬ ‫תהא‪-‬נשמתם‪-‬צרורה‪-‬בצרור‪-‬החיים!‬ ‫מיטן עפענונג פון דעם בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬איז זי‬ ‫געווען פון די ערשטע בתי‪-‬מדרשים אין די גאנצע‬ ‫געגנט‪ .‬דאס איז דעריבער געווען דער ערליכער‬ ‫וואונקל‪ ,‬וואו יעדער איד פון דעם געגנט‪ ,‬וואס‬ ‫האט געוואלט אריינכאפן א בלאט גמרא אדער א‬ ‫פסוק חומש‪ ,‬איז אהינגעקומען און זיך דערקוויקט‬ ‫דאס הארץ מיט רוחניות'דיגע הנאה‪.‬‬

METRA INDUSTRIES CONSTRUCTION CO. BORRIS VAYS Engineer For addressing and fixing the tremendous flooding problems that have plagued our neighborhood. For years, we have been suffering from chronic flooding. We had to endure thousands of dollars worth of damages to our property every time there was a rain storm. It was very common to see two or three feet of water on the roads, and we would have no access to our homes. For years, we were promised by various elected officials that the problems would be addressed, but nothing happened, and we continued to suffer. In 2011, after Legislator Wieder got elected, he devoted all his attention

and effort to obtain the funding, permits and ultimately start the construction project. Partnering in this effort were Moshe Hopstein and Moshe Yitzchuk Gross. Vince Altieri, Director of the RCDA, was also there all along to expedite the project. The construction project was done by Metra Industries, which was sensitive to the needs of the neighborhood and did a terrific job. Whenever we had issues during the construction, Boris was there for us. The project is complete, and to our relief, after a few rain storms our great neighborhood was not flooded.
