ABOUT 2010-11 ANNUAL GIVING It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of the first quarter of the 2011-12 school year! Athletics, arts, and academics are all in full swing–all pointing toward another fantastic year at the Academy. A MESSAGE FROM THE ANNUAL GIVING CHAIRS
As The Montgomery Academy ends its fifty-second year, we celebrate the great momentum that the school attained during the 2010-2011 year.
We were honored to co-chair The Montgomery Academy 2010-2011 Annual Giving campaign and appreciate all those that volunteered their time and energy to help us meet and exceed our goal! Of course, without the help of grade level volunteers, the grade level chairs, and the school administration, this campaign would have not been the success that it was.
Our new Head of School, Dave Farace, completed his first year at MA and it has been a privilege for the Board of Directors to work with him this year. With Dave’s fine leadership, the excellent work of his administrative team, a superb faculty, and great facilities, MA continued “The Pursuit of Excellence” in all areas of school life. Montgomery Academy teams won four more state championships during the 2010-2011 school year, bringing our total to forty-two state championships–the most of any school in the River Region. Our Fine Arts Department also continues to excel. Our Chorus program consistently receives superior ratings and our Forensics program remains one of the top programs in the nations. MA students flourish in the finest Art and Drama programs in the area. The Board of Directors completed a five year Strategic Plan that will provide the administrations a strategic pathway through 2016. The new Strategic Plan is ambitious and represents many hours of hard work by the Board and the administrative leadership. The school’s Annual Giving campaign was the most successful in MA’s history. The support and generosity of the MA community provided great momentum toward the school’s mission. For MA to continue to thrive, we must faithfully support this great school. Best Regards, M. THE MONTGOMERY ACADEMY FOUNDATION The Montgomery Academy Foundation is a non-profit corporation that was formed in 2002 to receive, hold, and invest the Academy’s endowment funds. Those funds at the time of the organization of the Foundation totaled about $1,600,000. As of October 31, 2011, the Foundation’s assets had a total value of $3,498,479. The Foundation's assets consist primarily of mutual funds of marketable securities, but also include capital loans to the Academy and some real estate located near the Academy's campus. The Foundation receives contributions from various sources, including lifetime and planned gifts from alumni, students, faculty, parents, and other friends of the Academy. The Foundation distributes annually to the Academy four percent of the average value of its assets as of September 30 for each of the three preceding years. During 2011, the Foundation distributed $133,800 to the Academy, which funds were used to help pay operating expenses. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of 13 persons, some of whom are also members of the Board of Directors of the Academy. Six members of the Foundation’s Board serve as an investment committee, which is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the Foundation’s investments and monitoring compliance with the Foundation’s investment policy. The Foundation regularly seeks additional contributions, which may be made in cash or in kind. The Foundation can be used effectively as part of a contributor's tax and estate planning. The growth of the Foundation will help support the operation of the school. The challenge of the Upper School here helped my daughter develop the confidence and respect for her own intelligence that led her to take risks with her college choices, Kenyon College for undergraduate studies and Harvard for graduate school. As a parent of three MA graduates, our family always participated in Annual Giving because we thought it was important and wanted to "do the right thing." However it was as an Academy faculty member that I knew why support was so important. Annual Giving is vital to tangible support in the classroom. By having more than just the basic necessities, MA teachers are free to plan and implement creative, novel, or high-tech approaches to learning; these methods often require a variety of materials that might otherwise be unavailable. The question came over the phone, “Why do you contribute to The Montgomery Academy Annual Fund?” This question has stayed on my heart and in my mind this past week as I shared the run for the state championship in varsity volleyball and then as I watched an MA graduate play college volleyball later in the week.
