Bushiribana nearly ready to welcome the royal family
US carrier arrives with aid as Philippines buries dead
Bushiribana makes an impressive backdrop
Platform for Royal family
ORANJESTAD -- HRMs King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will be arriving on Aruba this coming Tuesday, November 19, the
last leg on their first tour of the Dutch Caribbean since ascending to the at the end of April of this year. The island is in a frenzy of
preparation, with many exciting events planned for their two-day stay, of which the highlight will be "A Royal Night at Bushiribana, on Wednesday, November 20.” Many are wondering at the logistics of using Aruba's famed "gold ruins" as the backdrop for a variety show, but a briefing at the area demonstrated it is almost ready to welcome the monarchs and an audience of 7000, and the site will produce an impressive, memorable experience. Adjutant Roel Samson, heading the committee organizing the events during the Royal Visit, and Jonathan Vieira, who is in charge of the Bushiribana show, providing information on the logistics of the evening. The overriding issue of access to the remote site, traffic and parking was the focal point of the briefing yesterday morning. A special elevated platform has been erected for the royal party. The audience will be standing between them and the stage. A parking area will be cleared, which is an easy, three-minute walk from the staging area at its closest point. Mini-buses will be traverse between the two, picking up and dropping off the public. A second lot is being set up just south of the Ostrich Farm, which would require at least have an hour to walk to the staging area. Continued on pg 3
TACLOBAN (AFP) - A huge US aircraft carrier arrived off the coast of the typhoon-hit Philippines Thursday, offering hope of a dramatic uptick in aid to destitute survivors as officials buried scores of rotting corpses. The USS George Washington, with 5,000 sailors aboard, headed an eightstrong flotilla of US vessels bearing badly needed equipment, supplies and expertise for the thousands left homeless and hungry by one of the strongest storms in history. But almost a week after Super Typhoon Haiyan swept through the country's central islands, killing thousands and
leaving a security vacuum in its wake, desperation was still apparent and many of the dead remained unburied. "I do feel that we have let people down," conceded United Nations humanitarian aid chief Valerie Amos, who had visited the shattered city of Tacloban on Wednesday. "Those who have been able to leave have done so. Many more are trying. People are extremely desperate for help," she told reporters in Manila. "We need to get assistance to them now. They are already saying it has taken too long to arrive. Continued on pg 6

Sinterklaas arrives SAC foresees a tremendous this Sunday! Carnival 60!
ORANJESTAD -- Island children are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Pieten this coming Sunday, November 17. It was announced this beloved figure with his band of merry pranksters will arrive at Oranjestad Harbor at 11:00 AM. Once he has arrived at the harbor, a motorcade will take him to the Playa Linda plein, the open area on Caya Betico Croes that was the former location of the Playa Linda Women's and Home Department. A full day of fun activities for all the family is planned. Sinterklaas was very likely the inspiration for Santa Claus, but is a very real figure, also known as St. Nicolas and in some regions, De Goedheiligman or The Good Holy Man, the patron saint of children, sailors, philatelists, and the city of Amsterdam. Though there is some scholarly debate on his possible pre-Christian origins, it is acknowledged that the figure of Sinterklaas is based on Greek bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey, celebrations culminating on his feast day of December 5. In 1087, his relics were furtively transported to Bari, in southeastern Italy; for this reason, he is also known as Nikolaos of Bari. Bari later formed part of the Spanish
Kingdom of Naples, because it was previously conquered in 1442 by Alfonso V of Aragon. The city thus became part of the Kingdom of Aragon and later of Spain, until the 18th century. Because the remains of St. Nicholas were in Bari (then a Spanish city), in this tradition St. Nicholas comes from Spain and has a black helper depicted as a Moorish figure of the Spanish court. This is why Sinterklaas travels all the way from Spain to Aruba to bring toys and treats to good little boys and girls who are listed in the big book he always carries. Naughty children may be taken away in the bag of the Zwarte Pieten, if they are unrepentant. Dutch tradition requires children to leave a shoe out each night, in hope of finding a pleasant surprise from Sinterklaas when they awake. Thoughtful house holds will also leave some water and grass for his white horse, who takes him on his round from house to house. This will continue each night from the time he arrives on the island, until his feast day, when most households conduct a big party for all the children. He will then quietly slip away to Spain until it is time to make the long trip to Aruba the following year, which he does without fail. This is a huge event for island children and their parents, so travelers needing to make their way to the airport are advised to find alternative routes to the airport, rather than taking L.G. Smith Boulevard, particularly if you need to be there around noon to check in.
ORANJESTAD -- The Carnival season has started and as is customary on November 11 at 11 seconds to 11 o'clock, the Carnival 60 for this year was initiated. Tecla Kelly, President of the Stichting Arubaanse Carnaval (SAC) opened he season with great enthusiasm. She indicated that she never expected an opening of the season so big and spectacular. She thanked the Beatrix School for their presence. This was the first time that a school was invited to witness the opening of a Carnival season. The children enjoyed themselves immensely. On January 3rd they will officially open the period completely with different events. SAC foresees a fantastic and very big Carnival 60! There are two new groups and possibly more will be added. Groups are also expected to come with more sections, according to Rene Ridderstaat, SAC secretary. This will be a Carnival full of fantasy, colors, luxury and we will see how creative our local artists are again. SAC is working closely with the Police regarding the Carnival route. The route of San Nicolaas needs a solution to avoid collision of the head and tail of the parade meeting each other. This was the case during Carnival 50 and 55. With respect to the Parade in Oranjestad, they have begun discussing this. They will start lining up by Flora Market and hopefully the parade will end at the roundabout at Wendy's. These palns are still in the making. In view of Aruba celebrating its 60th Carnival, there
will have be different activities for our seniors. "We have to be grateful to our seniors because it is due to their support that we have
Carnival today..." Rene Ridderstaat indicated that there will be different encounters to determine what exactly the plans are. Up to now there will be a special activity of our international queen to give Carnival a special touch. A Masquerade Dinner and Dance with two international bands, Doble R. and Robert Jeandor together with Miriam Cruz of Las Chicas del Can is also in the plannings. Following this there will be a one hour show of the entire Carnival to warm up everyone for the grand celebration. A must see while on Aruba!
Rodger’s Beach
Near the southern tip of Aruba is an area known as Roger’s Beach. Crescent shaped, it curves out to the Caribbean, creating a handsome lagoon of bath-warm water. At the far end of the beach are a few small docks where fisherman moor their boats. Some of the best views of Rogers Beach actually can be found underwater. This is not because the views on land are not great because they are spectacular. It is just what is in the water that makes it better. This beach actually is in reefprotected water, so you have to snorkel if you go to this beach. You will be missing half the view if you do not. You can find this beauty near the southern tip of the island near Sint Nicolaas. Just like the rest of the Aruban beaches, this beach offers clear blue water and white powdery sand. An interesting aspect of Rogers Beach is how it is situated. Part of the beach actually curves out into the Caribbean, which forms a lagoon with such warm water. It is a sight to see, as well as feel the marvelous water. Because it is at the southern tip of the island, you will be able to see the oil refinery off in the distance from the beach. Although it is close, it does not affect the water or beach in any way. They have it so none of the water is polluted whatsoever. This is not in view at all times, so you do not have to worry about having it right in the middle of all your photos. What makes Rogers Beach a nice beach to go to for the day is that it is so secluded from the rest of the island. It is near Baby Beach, but that is about it. The majority of Aruba’s beaches all can be found on the western side of
the island, so you will not have as much traffic here as other places. They are worth the trip though, so do not be fooled by the small number of people there. Sometimes that makes for the best trips. You will find some great swimming in these waters.

US carrier arrives with aid...

Waiting to get out
charities, said it had raised 23 million pounds ($37 million) in the first 48 hours of launching an appeal for the Philippines. "The public's reaction to the sheer devastation that has been left by Typhoon Haiyan is quite simply remarkable. We are so grateful for the huge amount of donations which are vital to fund the work done by our emergency teams," DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed said. 'An atmosphere of fear and depression' But on the ground, the meagre aid that was getting through was still inadequate, with distribution hampered by fears of armed looters and by broken infrastructure. Sick or injured people lie helplessly among the ruins of buildings, while those with the energy try to leave a place that resembles hell. Efren Nagrama, area manager at the civil aviation authority, said conditions were "very dire now" as he surveyed the filthy stream of humanity at Tacloban's battered airport clamouring to get a flight out. "You see hundreds coming to the compound every day. People who have walked for days without eating, only to arrive here and be made to wait for hours or days under the elements," he said. "People are pushed to the tipping point -- they see relief planes but cannot get to the food nor get a ride out. There is chaos."
Ensuring a faster delivery is our... immediate priority." The world body's leader Ban Ki-moon, currently in Latvia, later added UN agencies and teams "are on the ground to provide the necessary humanitarian assistance". "Especially in the southern part there are tens of thousands of people exposed to the elements. We are doing everything possible to rush assistance to those who need it." Around 110 corpses were interred in a mass grave Thursday before heavy-digging machinery broke down, Tacloban mayor Alfred Romualdez said. They were placed at the bottom of a huge pit that is expected to be several layers deep by the time it is covered over with earth. "There are still so many cadavers in so many areas. It's scary," Romualdez told AFP, adding that retrieval teams were struggling to cope. "There would be a request
from one community to collect five or 10 bodies and when we get there, there are 40," he said, describing aid agencies' response to the crisis as too slow. US President Barack Obama urged Americans to donate generously to their former Asian colony. US officials said relief channels were slowly opening up with the reopening of a main road. Ships and planes from Asia-Pacific nations and Europe are also converging on the Philippines, bearing food, water, medical supplies, tents and other essentials to a population in dire need of the basics of life. Prime Minister David Cameron dispatched the biggest vessel in Britain's own fleet, a helicopter carrier, while heavy transport planes carrying equipment such as forklift trucks have already arrived. Suriname probes leader's son over US Hezbollah charges
TORONTO (AFP) - Toronto's crack-smoking mayor Rob Ford warned Thursday he will sue former staffers and others for telling police they witnessed him snorting cocaine, and partying with a possible prostitute. The allegations, revealed in police interviews that were released Wednesday, also suggest Ford abused the pain killer Oxycontin, drove while drunk and sent staffers to buy alcohol. The interviews were compiled over a period of months and were used to obtain a search warrant in an investigation of Ford's friend Alessandro Lisi, who faces drug and extortion charges. Ford, the leader of Canada's largest city and financial hub, has admitted once smoking crack while in a "drunken stupor" and has a history of erratic public behavior.
PARAMARIBO (AFP) Suriname has launched a formal investigation into the son of President Desi Bouterse after he was charged by US authorities with attempting to funnel weapons to Hezbollah, officials said Thursday. Dino Bouterse is currently in US custody following his extradition from Panama in August. US justice officials last Friday hit Bouterse with further charges, accusing him of attempting to supply weapons to Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant outfit, and offering to allow the group's fighters to train in Suriname. Suriname's ProcuratorGeneral Subhas Punwasi said in a statement that officials were now investigating whether Bouterse broke local laws.
Punwasi said officials may request information from foreign countries as part of the probe. According to an indictment unsealed in in a New York federal court, Bouterse was arrested after a meeting with undercover US agents posing as Hezbollah associates to discuss hosting 30 to 60 militants in Suriname for training and operations. Bouterse was given millions of dollars to allow dozens of purported Hezbollah operatives to use Suriname as a base. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison on the Hezbollah charge and a maximum sentence of life in prison over cocaine trafficking and brandishing a weapon.
Obama warns of 'unintended' effect of more Iran sanctions WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama warned Thursday against imposing further sanctions on Iran, saying a deal would set back Tehran's quest for nuclear weapons capability and prevent the "unintended consequences" of war. Obama pressed Congress as the UN nuclear watchdog said that Iran has not expanded its nuclear facilities in the past three months in a possible confidence-building measure by the new reformminded government "What we have done is seen the possibility of an agreement in which Iran would halt advances on its program," Obama told a news conference a week after talks involving the United States and Iran in Geneva. "We can buy some additional months in terms of their breakout capacity. Let's test how willing they are to actually resolve this diplomaticly and peacefully," he said. Obama said that US-led sanctions have "crippled" Iran's economy and that a deal would offer only "very modest relief at the margin." He said an agreement would not, for now, ease the two main measures enacted by Congress -- sweeping restrictions on Iran's vital oil exports and banking system. Obama said he was telling
Congress that his intention "always was to bring the Iranians to the table so we could resolve this issue peacefully." "No matter how good our military is, military options are always messy, are always difficult, always have unintended consequences, and in this situation are never complete in terms of making us certain that they don't then go out and pursue even more vigorously nuclear weapons in the future," he said. "If we're serious about pursuing diplomacy, there's no need for us to add new sanctions on top of the sanctions that are already very effective and that brought them to the table in the first place," Obama said. A halt to nuclear work In Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency said that Iran in the last three months has installed only four new centrifuges at its Natanz plant, compared with 1,861 machines put in place in the previous period. At the Fordo facility too, which also enriches uranium -- which can be used for a nuclear weapon if highly purified -- no new centrifuges were put into operation, the report seen by AFP showed. It added that Iran has also not begun operating any newgeneration IR-2M centrifuges and that "no... major components" had been installed at a reactor being built at Arak.

Anger in N. Zealand at 'close your legs' rape defence WELLINGTON (AFP) - Victims' rights advocates in New Zealand on Thursday condemned a defence lawyer who told a rape victim she should have "closed her legs" if she wanted to avoid having sex. Defence lawyer Keith Jefferies made the remarks when summing up at the trial of his client, a nightclub bouncer who was convicted of rape in Wellington District Court on Wednesday, the Dominion Post reported. The newspaper said the 20year-old woman was drunk in the central business district when the bouncer, George Pule, approached her and told her that he could get her into a nightclub where her friends were socialising. Instead he led her down an alley and raped her, although Jefferies said the victim did not struggle or cry out. Natalie Gousmett from the Wellington Rape Crisis Centre said the remarks were "horrific" and attempted to shift the
blame for sexual assault onto the victim. She said the case, and the so-called "Roastbusters" controversy -- which involved a group of Auckland youths boasting online about having group sex with underage girls -- had thrown a spotlight on attitudes to sexual assault in New Zealand. Jefferies conceded he had made the comments but said they came while defending his client and did not reflect his personal views. He said he was quoted out of context and that for anyone to fully understand what he meant they would have had to have attended the entire trial, which involved complex issues of consent. The Dominion Post said prosecutor Geraldine Kelly told the court that the victim, who was not identified, did not fight back because she was petrified of her attacker. Pule is awaiting sentencing on the rape conviction.
MONTERREY (AFP) - Authorities have detained a former US soldier accused of leading a gang of kidnappers in northern Mexico, officials said. The 32-year-old suspect spearheaded a band of 16 people who operated in the states of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas in the past four years, said Nuevo Leon security spokesman Jorge Domene. He carried two identities -Luis Ricardo Gonzalez Garcia and Javier Aguirre Cardenas - and moved to Nuevo Leon's industrial city of Monterrey
The troops were operating on a tip that she was threatened with abduction. In November 2011 a gang burst into the newspaper's newsroom, forced staffers to leave and poured gasoline on the computers and set them ablaze, burning the facility beyond repair. No arrests have been made. Since then three journalists at the newspaper have had to resign because of death threats. At least 20 journalists have had to leave Veracruz because of death threats, said Balbina Flores of Reporters without Borders.
In 2011 the group declared Veracruz to be highly dangerous for reporters. Mexico is plagued with drug-related violence. The National Human Rights Commission has recorded the deaths of 84 reporters and the disappearance of another 20 since 2000. But the violence has worsened since 2006 when clashes between rival drug cartels intensified and the federal military was sent in to try fight traffickers. Since 2006 more than 77,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico.
Mexico says former US soldier led kidnap gang
Mexico troops rescue reporter threatened with kidnapping VERACRUZ (AFP) - Mexican troops entered a newspaper headquarters Wednesday and rescued a journalist threatened with kidnapping, an industry group said. Navy forces went into the newsroom of El Buen Tono and took away Viridiana Breton Feito, its news editor, said Jorge Morales, a member of the Commission to Defend Journalists in the eastern city of Veracruz. The newspaper had already been attacked by criminals, it said. Breton and her three daughters were taken to a safe house.
from the United States in 2009, Domene said. He served in the US military between 1998-2002 before working as a police officer in Texas between 2002-2009, the spokesman said. The suspected gang leader is accused of ordering the September 25 kidnapping of Jorge Luis Martinez Martinez, the 70-year-old father of the mayor of the town of Zuazua, a suburb of Monterrey. The victim was found dead five days later in the neighboring state of Coahuila even though a ransom had been paid for his release. The 16 gang members were detained in eight separate operations in Nuevo Leon and
Coahuila in the past month, but their arrests and pictures were only presented Monday because the kidnapping investigations were recently completed. Their alleged leader was in possession of a 9mm gun when he was caught while traveling in a sport-utility vehicle in the wealthy Monterrey suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia on October 19, Domene said. Kidnappings for ransom have soared in Mexico in recent years, coinciding with a rise in drug-related violence. Official figures show that 1,205 people were abducted in the first nine months of the year, compared to 1,317 in 2012.
MONTPELLIER (AFP) - Gendarmes examine items allegedly stolen by a criminal gang and seized from a Roma encampment in Montpellier, on Thursday. Five people are under investigation for their role in an organized criminal gang which stole in France metals, mostly copper, which were then re-sold in Spain. The investigation into the criminal gang started after a theft in 2013 and led to police discovering five tonnes of valuable metals hidden in several Roma camps outside Montpellier on November 12.

Obama offers fix for broken health plan promise WASHINGTON (AFP) President Barack Obama said Thursday that Americans will be allowed to keep canceled health plans for an extra year, in a major climbdown after the troubled launch of his landmark reform. In promoting his "Obamacare" plan to expand health insurance to millions of un-insured Americans, the president had promised that those happy with their existing coverage could keep it. But, when the program was launched, many people received notices canceling policies that were no longer compatible with the new rules. Compounding this surprise, the roll-out of the program was undermined by an online marketplace for new, cheaper coverage plans that proved unable to meet demand and repeatedly crashed. On Thursday, under pressure from lawmakers and falling poll numbers, Obama announced that policy cancellations would be postponed for a year while Obamacare's problems are fixed. Obama said that a measure to allow those who had insurance plans before Obamacare came in effect would be extended to those who bought them after its enactment. "The bottom line is insurers can extend current plans that would otherwise be cancelled into 2014," he explained. "And the American people -
- those who got cancellation notices deserve and have received -- an apology from me," Obama said, acknowledging several times that "that's on me." "But they don't want just words," he said. "What they want is whether we can make sure that they are in a better place and that we meet that commitment." While admitting that the online marketplace for consumers to find new health plans had had a "rough start,"
Obama warned his political opponents not to try to overturn the entire law. "I will not accept proposals that are just another brazen attempt to undermine or repeal the overall law and drag us back into a broken system," he said. Figures released Wednesday showed only 106,185 people have been able to register for the program, 1.5 percent of the number the administration had planned to recruit by the end March next year.
PHNOM PENH (AFP) - A 29year-old man has died from bird flu in Cambodia and a toddler is critically ill with the virus after carrying sick and dead poultry from a market, health authorities said Thursday. The man died in early November in western Pailin
province near the border with Thailand after being admitted to hospital with a fever, the World Health Organization and Cambodia's Ministry of Health said in a joint statement. Cambodia has reported 26 cases of H5N1 flu this year, as it battles its deadliest outbreak of the virus since it came to prominence in 2003. Urging parents to keep children away from sick or dead poultry Health Minister Mam Bunheng said the sickness remains a "serious threat" to the health of all Cambodians. Authorities in the impoverished kingdom have been scrambling to control the outbreak, although scientists have been baffled by the sharp rise in deaths this year.

Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar. Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. It's also your brain's main source of fuel. If you have diabetes, no matter what type, it means you have too much glucose in your blood, although the reasons may differ. Too much glucose can lead to serious health problems. Chronic diabetes conditions include type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Potentially reversible diabetes conditions include prediabetes — when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes — and gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy but may resolve after the baby is delivered. Diabetes symptoms vary depending on how much your blood sugar is elevated. Some people, especially those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, may not experience symptoms initially. In type 1 diabetes, symptoms tend to come on quickly and be more severe. Some of the signs and symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes include: *Increased thirst *Frequent urination *Extreme hunger *Unexplained weight loss *Presence of ketones in the urine (ketones are a byproduct of the breakdown of muscle and fat that happens when there's not enough insulin) *Fatigue *Blurred vision *Slow-healing sores *High blood pressure *Frequent infections, such as gums or skin infections and vaginal or bladder infections Although type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, it typically appears during childhood or adolescence. Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, can develop at any age and is often preventable.

‘’Danki Aruba’’ By Gino Giannone
ORANJESTAD - The beauty of Aruba starts with the people, beaches and scuba diving. After living here for almost 3 years and studying medicine, you get to understand the reality of the island. Needless to say, is a happy island I have learned so much in this 193km2 of earth those small lessons that would follow me through my career so I want to say ‘’DANKI ARUBA’’. Firstly, as trilingual student I could say that has been beneficial for me to be here. For example, the people speak different languages that you may never heard off such as Papiamento that is combination of Spanish, Dutch and English. This is an enormous benefit for tourist that don’t speak English someone can always help you. In fact, you may come here for many holi-
days to enjoy and relax for a while but at the end all you take are experiences and the interactions with these great humans. Numerous times, I have been stocked with my car in the middle street on my way home. Indeed, that’s where the integrity of this people shows. I could assure that any person within a few minutes would come to aid you with your car or pushing it to the side of the road as I have done at least 20 times! Secondly, the beaches are warm, calm, safe and peaceful specially Eagle Beach and Mangel Halto. This is why individuals, save months to years to travel here. One of the reasons is to achieve a feeling of relaxation and union with their families and friends .Moreover, no discrimination policy in Aruba makes it easier for every ethnicity to visit and feel grateful to be present on this island. Indeed, Aruba’s weather is always sunny, I always thought they should call it is “is Always sunny in Aruba” . Thirdly, the underwater world is constituted by splendid variety of fishes and turtles. Most people don’t get to see it for being afraid of the ocean. As a professional scuba diving instructor, I truly recommend you to go scuba div-
ing; don’t leave Aruba with only meeting new people and relaxing at the beaches. Indeed, everyone is scared of what they don’t know and is something that you should definitely try if you are visiting in Aruba for more than 3 days with companies such as S.E.Aruba Fly and dive and Red Sail Sports. Usually, travelers want experience something that differs from the own country and what better experience of being underwater and observing wrecks over 100 years old. Individuals who don’t want to scuba tend to share the same ‘’excuses’’ such as sharks in the water and can’t breathe underwater. The interesting fact is, there are no sharks in the diving learning areas since they usually take you to places that are safe. Indeed, sharks may be found all the way to the end of the island but those are areas that no one visits. While you are learning scuba diving, your instructor will teach you how to breathe underwater by using your regulator that provides you the same quantity of air that you breathe at the surface. All in all, please enjoy your visit in Aruba and have a blast because you deserve it. Regards, Gino Giannone Medical student and Scuba diving instructor. Themorningnews Aruba wishes Gino success with his further studies!
Canadian actress jailed for stalking Alec Baldwin NEW YORK CITY (AFP) - A New York judge on Thursday found a Canadian actress guilty of stalking and harassing US movie and television star Alec Baldwin, sentencing her to seven months in jail. Genevieve Sabourin, 41, engaged in a "relentless and escalating campaign of threats" that "served to harass, annoy and alarm Mr Baldwin" and "terrorized his wife," Judge Thomas Mandelbaum said. He found her guilty on five counts and sentenced her to 210 days in jail, including 30 days for contempt he handed down Wednesday after she repeatedly interrupted and heckled proceedings in court. Mandelbaum ordered her to "stay completely away from Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin" for the next five years. Sabourin, who denied the charges and claimed to want only closure after an affair with Baldwin, told the court one last time that she had "done nothing wrong" but received no leniency. She sat subdued as the sentence was read out. Looking pale and withdrawn, her composure after a night in jail for contempt was in stark contrast to her outbursts earlier in the trial. Baldwin, who took the stand on Tuesday, denied having sex with her and accused her of bombarding him with hundreds of unwanted messages and of sending "vile" Twitter messages to his wife. Sabourin showed an "utter
lack of respect for the law" and a basic unwillingness to accept that the rules of civil society applied to her as well as to everyone else, Mandelbaum concluded Wednesday. Her lawyer Todd Spodek said that, while her sentence was heavier than expected, she would only serve 180 days and be let out early for good behavior. On Wednesday, a sobbing Sabourin testified for three hours in the criminal court, speaking of how she dreamt of marriage and children with Baldwin after an alleged night of passion in 2010. She admitted to sending him emails, calling him up and turning up uninvited at his Long Island home, his Manhattan apartment and a public event where he was appearing after a film screening. While Baldwin admitted having dinner with her in New York in February 2010 he said it purely as a favor to discuss her career.

Call for Atlantic tuna quotas to be retained
Google says government data requests surging WASHINGTON (AFP) Google said Thursday the number of requests for user data from governments and law enforcement has doubled since 2010, as it renewed a push to reveal more about US demands. In its updated "transparency report" covering the first six months of 2013, the tech giant said the largest number of requests -- 10,918 -- came from the United States. That accounted for more than a third of the 25,879 requests Google received world-
wide. The California Internet company renewed its argument for the ability to reveal more about US national security requests, disclosures of which must be lumped in with law enforcement inquiries. "We believe it's your right to know what kinds of requests and how many each government is making of us and other companies," Google's legal director Richard Salgado said in a blog posting. "However, the US Department of Justice contends that
NASA DATA:
(AFP) - This November 10, 2013, MODIS image taken by NASA’s Aqua satellite and released yesterday shows an iceberg (C) that was part of the Pine Island Glacier and is now separating from the Antarctica continent. What appears to be a connection point on the top left portion of the iceberg is actually ice debris floating in the water. The original rift that formed the iceberg was first observed in October 2011 but as the disconnection was not complete, the “birth” of the iceberg had not yet happened. It is believed the physical separation took place on or about July 10, 2013, however the iceberg persisted in the region, adjacent to the front of the glacier. The iceberg is estimated to be 21 miles by 12 miles (35 km by 20 km) in size, roughly the size of Singapore. A team of scientists from Sheffield and Southampton universities will track it and try to predict its path using satellite data
US law does not allow us to share information about some national security requests that we might receive," he added. "Specifically, the US government argues that we cannot share information about the requests we receive (if any) under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. But you deserve to know." Google and other tech companies have gone to court to win the right to publish more detailed figures, and have been urging lawmakers to join this effort. The overall number of re-
quests rose from 20,938 in the last six months of 2012, and more than doubled from the 12,539 in the last six months of 2009. In 2013, India had the second largest number of requests, 2,691, followed by Germany (2,311), France (2,011) and Britain (1,274), "This comes as usage of our services continues to grow, but also as more governments have made requests than ever before. And these numbers only include the requests we're allowed to publish," Salgado said. Google provided at least some data in 83 percent of US requests and in 65 percent of global requests. The report comes with US tech companies under pressure following revelations of a secret government program that scoops up vast amounts of data from Internet firms. Tech firms including Microsoft, Google and Facebook have been seeking to release more information on government data requests, in the belief this would reassure customers.
JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - A leading environmental group on Monday called on authorities to keep tough fishing quotas on Atlantic tuna when governments meet next week to set industry rules. The US-based Pew Charitable Trusts called on the 47member governments of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas to maintain catch limits on endangered bluefin tuna. The group will meet in Cape Town next week under pressure from the fishing industry and countries to loosen rules. Since the industrial fishing era began, stocks of Bluefin tuna are thought to have fallen by at least 85 percent in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, where they come to spawn in the warmer waters. Some 80 percent of Atlantic bluefin tuna fished out of the Mediterranean ends up in the Japanese sushi market. The European Union agreed in 2007 to restrict the fishing of bluefin tuna in the hope of reviving dwindling stocks, a measure which hit some member nations hard. Fish stocks now seem to have stabilised, which a new scientific count is expected to confirm next February. Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Malta favour increasing quotas, although the EU as a whole is not in favour. But Pew warned that the fish is not out of danger yet, citing a study which appeared to show fishing between 2008 and 2011 exceeded quotas by 57 percent. Pew also called for curbs on porbeagle shark fishing, after the endangered fish was listed on the Convention for International Trade on Endangered Species (CITES) this year.

Liechtenstein eyes end of banking secrecy
The Dutch economy is out of recession just THE HAGUE (AFP) -The Dutch economy managed to creep out of recession and grew by 0.1% in the third quarter of this year compared with Q2, according to new estimates from the national statistics office CBS on Thursday. The growth is largely due to exports, which rose 2.1%. But compared with the same quarter in 2012, the economy contracted by 0.6%, investments were down and consumer spending was also down, the CBS said. And the number of jobs in the workforce is 160,000 lower than a year ago, the biggest drop since 1995. The construction sector was hardest hit with the loss of 31,000 jobs. Childcare and
home nursing services were also seriously affected, the CBS said. Central bank chief Klaas Knot said the marginal growth is encouraging but the jobs market gives cause for concern. ‘The developments on the jobs front are extremely worrying,’ Knot said. ‘We need consistency in economic policy … to give this limited recovery a firm basis.’ Finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem told reporters in Brussels the situation is encouraging but it is still very early days. 'We are emerging from a deep dip and there is no reason to be too optimistic,' the minister is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
THE HAGUE - Two women from Ecuador have been arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport after they were found to be smuggling €400,000 in cash in their body cavities and luggage. The women, aged 38 and 39 were heading for Spain but were found to be carrying €8,000 in cash in their suitcases during a customs check. Further research showed the women had forced cash into their bodies and they were arrested. Over the next few days, they also excreted several dozen small packages of €500
notes which they had swallowed earlier. In total, they were carrying €400,000. 'They just kept on producing,' a military police spokesman is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.

GENEVA (AFP) - Liechtenstein said on Thursday it would sign an international agreement on fighting tax evasion, sounding the death-knell for its long ingrained banking secrecy practices. The tiny Alpine principality is set to sign the Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters during a global forum on tax transparency in Jakarta on November 21. The move reflects Liechtenstein's "commitment to tax cooperation based on widely supported international standards," the country's government said in a statement. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development hailed the move. "Liechtenstein has taken a very significant step today towards full transparency by endorsing the new standard on automatic exchanging of infor-
mation," OECD chief Angel Gurria said in a statement. Lichtenstein banks, whose secrecy practices long earned the country a reputation as a tax haven, also expressed enthusiasm. The small, landlocked country between Switzerland and Austria, long opposed the automatic exchange of banking data, citing the right to confidentiality. On Thursday however, Vaduz acknowledged that "automatic information exchange in tax matters will be the future international standard." And it stressed its intent to "participate actively" with the OECD in developing that standard. At the instigation of many advanced countries, the Parisbased OECD has spearheaded a clampdown on tax evasion and the concealment of illicit funds.
The movement to scrap banking secrecy policies in Liechtenstein and other wellknown "tax havens", such as neighbouring Switzerland, arose after the financial crisis of 2008 and subsequent eurozone debt crisis, as cashstrapped countries began going more aggressively after tax evaders and the banks that helped them. Liechtenstein's government said Thursday it was "prepared to conclude agreements on automatic exchange of tax information based on the future OECD standard" with countries that put in place structures that allow transparency. The country said it was paying particular attention to the so-called G5 countries, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Spain, and an automatic exchange pilot project they had launched.
Samsung combined to capture a remarkable 109 percent of third quarter handset industry profits," said Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley in a research note. Walkley pointed out that other manufacturers such as BlackBerry, Nokia, LG, HTC and Motorola are operating at a loss, based on his latest global handset survey. Walkley estimated that Samsung shipped 84.8 million smartphones in the quarter and "captured an impressive 53 percent of handset industry profits." Apple meanwhile, which launched two new iPhones late in the quarter, "increased its share of industry profits from
53 percent in the second quarter to 56 percent in the third quarter due to slightly higher sequential iPhone unit sales but also primarily due to more pronounced struggles from other" manufacturers. He said Apple is likely to perform even better in the fourth quarter with "improved supply for the iPhone 5s and steady iPhone 5c sales." Walkley said his analysis excludes some new Chinese smartphone makers "due to the lack of available profit metrics." A Gartner survey released Thursday showed Samsung had 32 percent of the global smartphone market in the past quarter, to Apple's 12.1 percent.

NEW YORK CITY, November (AFP) - Apple and Samsung are grabbing virtually all the profits in the red-hot smartphone market while most other makers are losing money, an analyst said Thursday. "We estimate Apple and

5 Burgers Aruba: Now your best breakfast bargain!
Delicious Breakfast
-- A favorite stop for a great burger for lunch or dinner has just expanded their hours and menu to offer some of the best breakfast bargains to be found in Palm Beach. Owners Aaron and Rosie Walisever are living their dream: a home on paradise while welcoming all and
sundry to their proud undertaking, 5 Burgers Aruba. The couple’s fanatical dedication to giving their customers what they really want has resulted in a unique menu from an internationally known franchise with a “5”, which now includes breakfast. “You never get a second chance to make a first impression,” believes Aaron. Upon entering 5 Burgers Aruba in The Village Mall in Palm Beach, one is struck by utterly spotless surroundings and a smiling, friendly, attentive service crew. Of course, the main item on the menu is burgers-the way they were meant to be, thick and juicy, made fresh daily and 100% pure beef, the kind that made the hamburger a traditional American treat. However, beginning at 7 a.m., patrons can now order 2
eggs any style, (omelets with 3 fillings are $7.99) toast and coffee with unlimited refills for the special introductory price of only $3.99, or All-you can-eat pancakes for $6.99! A new plate called the "Home Run" comes with 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, 2 pancakes, toast & home fries - for only $9.99! Best of all - unlimited coffee or tea - that is, refillable and never ending is only $.79! Breakfast is served from 8am until noon. Famous for their fries made from fresh potatoes, Aaron has been working for months on devising the most irresistible home fries recipe, chunky and tender with skins still on; after much testing and tasting, he got the thumbs up from his harshest critic, Rosie; so this is another treat you have to try. A glance at their burger menu will certainly tempt you to return for lunch or dinner, to sample their famous specialty items such as the Gouda, Farmer’s or Man Burger (al-
most 12 ounces of choice beef), and a Western Burger with Aarons’ secret-recipe crispy onion rings. All of these can be personalized with an incredible array of toppings, (mushrooms, jala-peño peppers, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato…whatever, the list goes on) at absolutely no extra cost. 5 Burger portions are ENORMOUS! Aaron suggests that even their small serving of fries is enough to be shared by
two. He was very amused to watch a famous French chef demonstrating the best way to make fried potatoes on a gourmet cooking show and could only comment “He stole my recipe!” Try them the English waywith vinegar, and you’ll wonder how you ever ate fries without it. This same 5-star chef also swears by Gouda as the best topping for the ideal gourmet cheeseburger. 5 Burgers is now open early until 10-ish at night; delivery is available to both the high-rise and low-rise hotel and beach district at now extra cost for orders over $50. Enjoy a great lunch without ever leaving the beach by calling 586-3904. However, we suggest you stop by and enjoy their authentic, heartfelt hospitality; it is not unusual for either owner to sit and chat, sharing their knowledge of the island while making sure patrons are happy with their meal.
Gold Coast Aruba: This is the time to invest -- Management of Gold Coast Aruba, the island’s newest and most innovative gated community, reports that sales have been very good and encouraging as the global economy recovers and people looking to purchase vacation homes have found that Gold Coast is an outstanding investment value. Director of Sales, Fito Croes has noticed a surprising percentage of owners in reality do not spend a great amount of time personally to use the villas or town homes they purchase, but are taking advantage of Gold Coast’s rental services to turn their investment into ready income. “The greater portion of home owners are using their “home away from home” in Aruba to escape the winter months, or spend holidays with the family on the island,” he remarked, “but I am gratified by how many are buying because they felt secure with real estate investment on Aruba. They really study the history and economy of the island and are impressed with the political stability and continually increasing value of prime locations. Gold Coast is in the heart of Malmok, considered Aruba’s most exclusive community where the value of properties has only increased over time. It is only minutes to the best beaches and all the action, and yet offers a quiet and secluded getaway; we are very pleased by
the response to our concept.” Fito, with his sister Mayrin and brother Rudy operate Cas Bon, which has been constructing homes and building developments for all budgets for nearly twenty years. “Gold Coast Aruba is the jewel in our crown,” observes Fito. “We were very excited about this project and the scope of actual and planned facilities and amenities. We have spoken to countless island visitors to find out what they would really want in a permanent residence on Aruba, and took from there.” Input from frequent vacationers who have dreamed of their own home in Aruba contributed to the realization of Gold Coast Aruba which when complete will be a community
of 260 town homes, villas and condominiums with a stunning clubhouse complemented by two additional community pool areas , The Clubhouse is about to start construction and will offer to the community homeowners and visitors 2 tennis courts, full service spa and fitness center as well as a stunning pool area and is expected to be complete by early 2013. It will also house a restaurant and mini-market. Owners who purchased upon the groundbreaking only a few short years ago, are already enjoying a nearly 50% appreciation on their investment, particularly those taking advantage of the on site management’s rental services program. There is always a great demand for Aruba and facili-
ties such as those at Gold Coast, make it easy for some owners to see a valuable return on their investment. The design of the residences and public areas is open, airy and spacious, taking full advantage of the island environment, with quality construction and finishing available. Partnering with two of Aruba’s top providers of kitchens and bathrooms enables developers to offer custom options allowing buyers to individualize their homes. An elegant and chic furniture package is available or island designers will assist owners in finishing the décor to their specific tastes. There are many aspects to purchasing property; not the
least is the future value of the investment. To further enhance this, Gold Coast management have inaugurated a number of in-house services and have recently become affiliated Interval International, the world’s largest network of vacation ownership properties which provides an unlimited international pool of investors to tap for ownership and rental prospects. Property exchange for a vacation in another destination is also available through the Interval International affiliation. Gold Coast’s own rental services have also proven highly successful in assisting owners in renting their villas; 24-hour security and maintenance services also tip the scales when it is time to make a decision. Aside from all this, housekeeping, child care, catering services , car rental through its partnership with AVIS car rental are also available as well as pre-shopping services so cupboards and refrigerators are stocked upon arrival, which can also be arranged through their property management department. Personnel are also available to assist in arranging restaurant reservations and island activities. Boxing: Macau fight may be Pacquiao's last - trainer SINGAPORE (AFP) - Manny Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach said he would order the Filipino boxing great to retire if he suffers a bad loss in next week's comeback fight against Brandon Rios. The flamboyant Roach backed Pacquiao for a fifth or sixth-round knockout of the American in their November 24 World Boxing Organisation welterweight title bout in Macau. But if the fight does not go according to plan, he said he would have no hesitation in telling Pacquiao to quit the sport after what would be his third straight defeat. And Roach, a former boxer who suffers from Parkinson's disease, said they had an "agreement" that Pacquiao would retire if advised to by his trainer. Pacquiao, who is nearly 35 and was regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of his generation when he won world titles in eight weight divisions, has not fought in nearly a year since he was knocked out by Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez in the sixth round in Las Vegas last December. It was Pacquiao's second consecutive defeat after he lost a controversial split decision to
Timothy Bradley six months earlier -- his first loss in seven years. Pacquiao's build-up to the "must-win" fight with Rios has been disrupted by super typhoon Haiyan, which killed thousands of people and left hundreds of thousands homeless when it swept through central regions of the Philippines. But Roach said he had told Pacquiao, who is a member of congress, that it was impossible to take time out of training to visit survivors and survey aid efforts in the affected areas. "He told me he wanted to go down on Sunday but it's too close to the fight for him to take any time off and we talked about that," Roach said. "He is focused on the fight still but
obviously it is a big distraction because it killed all of those people. Roach added that Pacman was "90 percent ready" to face "fat guy" Rios, who is seven years younger and 1.5 inches taller than the five foot 6.5 inches (1.69 metres) Filipino southpaw. He said if Pacquiao wins in Macau, they will seek a rematch with Marquez as a priority ahead of the long-awaited match-up with undefeated American Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao wraps up his training camp and departs for Macau on Monday, ahead of the fight which will be held next Sunday morning local time so as to be live for Saturday evening TV audiences in the United States.

Football: Mexico beat Kiwis to
close in on World Cup
MEXICO CITY - (AFP) Mexico took a huge step toward next year's World Cup finals, shaking off recent bad form to pummel New Zealand 5-1 on Wednesday in their intercontinental play-off first leg. Playing in Mexico City's imposing Azteca Stadium, El Tri delivered on their manager Miguel Herrera's pre-game call to take a big goal advantage into the second leg in New Zealand on November 20. It was a huge turnaround for Mexico, who barely made it to the play-off after struggling in their North and Central America and Caribbean regional group, finishing fourth out of six teams. After winning just twice and scoring a paltry seven goals in 10 games within the CONCACAF final group, the Mexicans looked like a revived team as they came out charging against the All Whites. Herrera, who last month became Mexico's fourth manager in six weeks, had voiced confidence that his team would win, even asking his squad to score at least three goals to take them
closer to Brazil next year. New Zealand, who made it to the 2010 World Cup after a memorable play-off victory against Bahrain, had hoped to keep it close but Mexico were the stronger side. Goalkeeper Glen Moss made several valiant saves but Mexico's relentless attack was too much, with Santos forward Oribe Peralta leading the charge with a brace. Defender Paul Aguilar opened the score sheet when he volleyed home a ball deflected inside the Kiwi area in the 31st minute. Fellow Club America striker Raul Jimenez followed eight minutes later with a header following a corner kick. Peralta scored his first goal three minutes into the second half, tapping in a nifty low cross from Miguel Arturo Layun, who gave New Zealand

all kinds of problems on the left wing. Layun gave Peralta his second goal in the 80th minute, this time with a high cross that the forward headed out of Moss's reach into the left corner of the net. Former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, the 34-yearold who now plays for Mexican club Leon, scored the fifth goal with a header from a corner kick in the 84th minute New Zealand's Chris James scored a consolation goal a minute later but it was too late to do any damage.

INDIANAPOLIS, (AFP) Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti has been forced to quit motor racing on medical advice after having suffered multiple injuries in a horrifying crash. The 40-year-old Scottish driver broke two vertebrae in his spine, suffered a concussion, two broken ribs and a broken right ankle at the Grand Prix of Houston in October and has now been told by his doctors to give up the sport. "One month removed from the crash and based upon the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing," Franchitti said in a statement. "They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being. Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop." Franchitti won 31 Indy car races and the famed Indy 500 in 2007, 2010 and 2012.

More of the same coming up!
A boiling arena yells and shouts during the Divi Aruba Beach Tennis single finals ORANJESTAD - A boiling arena yelled and shouted last Wednesday evening when the single finals of the Divi Aruba Beach Tennis tournament were held. Eagle Beach trembled when overheads were smashed across the net and impossible dives were executed by the athletes. Playing single in Beach Tennis is not easy. Although the regular size of the court (volleyball size) is made smaller by a third, it is still quite a large area to cover on your own. Especially the short balls over the net, followed by a lob so that you have to run back as fast as you can, are killing! But that is what the players of the Divi Aruba Beach Tennis event are doing very well: they have survived the round robin phase of the singles and they are now well into the Elimination Round. And that means: if you lose, you’re out. As the music of the DJ’s is keeping all players in sunny moods and the wind is keeping everyone cool, registration for the mixed doubles event went underway. The Pro’s are monitored by an official ITF referee (International Tennis Federation) – this gentleman also supervises the schedules for the doubles.
