We start with a white garment made from 100% natural USA cotton (down to the thread holding it together). To color our garments, we use fiber reactive organic dyes to create over 800 colors that are inspired by nature.

Next our garments are printed with environmentally friendly water-based inks. Most screen printers use solvent based inks made primarily of plastic (petroleum) that have a rough feel and contain toxic Phthalates. While many printers are trying to kick the chemical habit and learn how to use water based inks, we are light years ahead of them. We are the pioneers of using water based discharge ink and have perfected its use to create photo-realistic imagery that is not attainable by other screen printers. For many years, the founders have been involved with Green Causes. One of them has been a longtime advocate of local, national and worldwide conservation organizations dedicated to keeping land preserved so that ecosystems can remain intact for future generations. Another has had his personal land certified as an organic farm, making it possible for local farmers to use this land to grow organic food.

Our Dye Oxidation System (DOS), purifies our manufacturing process waste water by removing color and additives without the addition of chemicals.

GREEN INITIATIVES • Since 1992 we have used 100% cotton, grown and woven in the USA. • Since 1993 we have used water-based ink. • Since 1994 we have used organic reactive dyes. • In 1999 we began the digital edition of our catalog to save on waste and save trees. • In 2000 we began conversion of our lighting, company-wide to save our natural resources. • In 2004 The Mountain’s Apparel was Oekotex 100% certified (one of the highest qualifications worldwide). This guarantees our shirts are free of chemicals harmful to your body. • In 2006 we converted to DTS (Direct to Screen) for printing our separations eliminating thousands of pounds of plastic film per year. • In 2010 we “closed the loop” on all our cardboard waste, and now use boxes to ship your orders that are made of 100% recycled cardboard. • In 2011 our Dye Oxidation System (DOS) went on line (see above)* • In 2012 we installed filtered water fountains company wide to reduce plastic bottle waste. • From June 2013 to July 2015 we have been able to reuse over 2,000,000 gallons of water that was purified by our DOS system. • From 2014 to 2015 we extensively upgraded our facilities lighting by replacing old, inefficient lights with state-of-the-art LED lights reducing energy use for lighting by 30%. • In 2015 we installed an automated screen washing system that recycles 50% of it’s process water.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dean Russo draws inspiration from the urban landscape and his love for dogs to create truly unique artwork known for its brilliant colors and bold abstract designs of mesmerizing shapes and symbols. To create these one-of-a-kind images he uses a minimum of ten mediums per painting, including everything from pastels, oils, pencils, wax and charcoal to sharpies and spray cans. “I used to paint mostly human portraits and did this from home for so many years with my dogs by my side. Till one day I thought, why not paint my two favorite subjects,” says Russo. Initially inspired by his two cocker spaniels, Dean began working with rescue centers to raise awareness and donate his work. Dean strives to communicate a message that encourages people to choose adoption, to acknowledge the worldwide failure of breed specific legislation and to combat dog fighting around the world. “When a child sees, hears or acts upon my message, I feel successful. Anytime someone puts a message of love or respect toward people or animals into the universe it builds like a ripple. I hope I live long enough to see my ripples come back to me. That will make me smile.”

Orlando Baca’s passion for creating art began at an early age. His artwork is deeply rooted in his connection to his Navajo heritage as a member of the Kinlichiinii/ Redhouse Clan. He attributes the roots of his love, talent, and interest in art to his Mother, who was a gifted artist. When he was young she took art classes at a local university, and Orlando would stretch canvases and make frames for her. The first thing she taught him to draw was a horse. While in elementary school he drew a lot, and when he was in the second grade he brought a drawing in to his teacher of a horse filled with mazes. He recalls this as the point he realized his artwork was truly something special. His teacher copied the drawing and distributed it throughout the school. During his school career, he received blue ribbons and gold key awards for his art and he was voted ‘future artist’ in the school’s yearbook. Orlando Baca was born in Winslow, Arizona. He currently lives one hour east of the Grand Canyon where he draws inspiration from the rich colors of his surroundings of the great Southwest. Orlando spends his time inventing new products to bring to market. He also spends his time designing tribal concepts using various types of mediums. Integral to Baca’s designs and drawings is the celebration of life – a reverence and honoring of all living things. He is passionate about giving back to the community through working with youth and spreading the message of hope.

Verdayle Forget wanted to be an artist ever since she was a little girl living in Alliance, Nebraska. As an only child of a working Mother, she spent much of her time drawing with a big box of crayons and working on other art projects. Today her favorite medium is oil paints, and her passion for art has continued throughout her life, turning into a diverse and successful career. After spending a month of studying intensely in England in her early twenties, Verdayle returned to the states and began to work in the sports arena, creating artwork for Purdue University’s Football Program and for the Indiana Pacers. Verdayle then moved to Camano Island in Washington State and started working with wildlife rehabilitation programs such as The Siberian Tiger Project, contributing to their cause by donating paintings to be auctioned off at fund raisers. Through this work, along with working on many commissioned paintings of Andalusian and Friesian Horses, her love for wildlife and their preservation quickly grew. Today Verdayle is working on many new paintings of baby animals, from zoo animals to horses and kittens. This spring she will be unveiling these new designs in her brand called Verdayle’s Baby Wild®. She works in a studio out of her home and in her free time enjoys spending time with her friends, gardening and attending theater and concerts.

David Behrens’ inspiration in Native American Heritage began when he was an illustration major at East Carolina University. He shares, “I remember going to the library to do some research on a painting and stumbling across some old photographs of Native people. The profound sense of pride mixed with sadness and longing in their faces spoke so sharply to me, that I just could not put my paintbrush to canvas without painting one of these remarkable faces.” The dream-like montages that are hallmarks of David’s artwork are accomplished through an oil glazing technique that dates back to the early Italian Renaissance. He follows an in-depth process of researching his subject matter, first studying the history, consulting historical societies and conversing with ancestors of his subjects. He is known for his ability to communicate emotion through his paintings. “As humans we are all moved by stories,” David says, “and my greatest hope is that my paintings achieve what a good story does, only not with words but with brush strokes.” David’s artwork is exhibited at galleries across the country and he currently travels throughout the United States, displaying his work at exhibits and Native American Art Markets. He continues to produce new pieces at his studio in New Mexico, challenging his audience with stirring concepts that are both fearlessly honest and thoughtfully rendered.

“In our modern age we are so burdened with information with its easy access that I am afraid that we have forgotten how to feel. Images in art move us as well as give the artist a way to communicate an idea that often times supersedes spoken language. It stirs and awakens in its honest expression.”

Carol Cavalaris has been artistic from a young age, even making her own dolls and their clothes. She studied art throughout school, completing an Art Degree at Shasta College in Redding, CA. She loves exploring all kinds of artistic mediums, including oil painting, acrylics, drawing, stained glass, music and writing. Her professional career has spanned many artistic fields, such as working in Advertising and Interior Design and ultimately focusing on the creation of her own artwork. Painting wildlife, nature, color and detail are her passions. She will study a photograph of an animal for days, focusing on the details of texture, the eyes and fur. “I see the uniqueness in every living being as a momentary gift to be treasured. And so it is this need to capture the life force, to enhance and celebrate it, and even give it life long after it has faded, that gives meaning to my work,” shares Cavalaris. She also enjoys blending reality and fantasy together and combining photo sources and painting techniques to create her own unique mixed medium images that she calls ‘living art.’ Cavalaris’ work is in private collections all over the world and has been published in magazines, art books and featured on book covers. Her work is also licensed by various companies and selling on products worldwide. In her free time Cavalaris enjoys hiking, movies, music and visiting zoos and botanical gardens.

David Penfound originates from Hampshire in the UK, and from an early age discovered a talent for art. Originally inspired by fantasy art, David honed a specialty for creating imaginative colorful artwork covering a wide variety of genres. As a traditional artist, David found he had a connection with Native American Art and was delighted to have his first exhibition in the US feature his Native American images. A true animal lover, he then used his natural skills to create some breathtaking images of wildlife and fantastical creatures. David took his skill set to new heights by learning 3D digital art, which opened the door to a world of new possibilities. This new endeavor led him to explore the world of creating visual effects for television and film, working with some of the biggest names in visual effect production. His work has spanned into media, advertising and product design, again working with leading global brands. Life is for living. To experience natural highs. And David definitely enjoys his life to the fullest, being an avid extreme sports enthusiast. He enjoys snowboarding, paragliding, sky diving, deep sea diving, and several other activities that push the proverbial envelope. David is a leader in art and design, with nary a subject that he cannot master. He has been working closely with The MountainÂŽ for over ten years, and was instrumental in the creation of the Big Face and Manimals Collections.

Michael Cahill originally grew up in Southern California, but his passion for painting, history, mythology, and the exploration of far off places has taken him all over the world. Michael’s love of reading anything he could find started at a young age, and through reading he felt compelled to draw and paint the images that his imagination was creating. Inspired by the stories of pirates, great explorers, adventurers, fantasy books, science fiction characters, and everything in between led him to paint all the time in order to show others what he was seeing. Jumping forward in time, Michael was at university working on his economics degree, when he was contacted by a small visual FX studio that had seen his artwork and wanted to bring him onboard to help with their Visual FX workload. That moment was all it took to change his direction, and Michael never looked back. Now having spent 20 years working on award winning projects as an Art Director, Illustrator, and Production Designer for some of the biggest media companies in the world (Warner Brothers, Microsoft, and Nintendo) he’s begun to branch out into the world of art licensing. His first series of paintings to be released by The Mountain® are based on his love of personas. Wouldn’t it be fascinating to be a Viking, Centurion, Explorer, or even Christmas Elf? His paintings encourage us to have fun with our personas, while also being eye catching and quite the conversation starter. Currently Michael resides in Queensland, Australia with his family. Vincent Hie was born in Indonesia. He and his family relocated to Amsterdam, where he currently resides, when he was only four years old. He is passionate about his art, and has been sketching and painting for as long as he can remember. A traditionalist at heart, he prefers to create his art with paint, brush, and pencil. He has, however, discovered that there are many advantages to digital painting, and has recently made the switch to this new method of creation. “It took me quite a while to adapt to this way of painting,” says Vincent. “But the advantages of painting digitally are undeniable.” Vincent began working with The Mountain® in 2004, having just entered the scene as an artist. Remarkably, he was contacted by The Mountain’s Art Director almost immediately after posting his very first dragon painting online. It just so happened that the dragon was exactly what we were looking for; in fact it became one of the best-selling dragons we had in our line at the time. Shortly thereafter, Vincent was asked to create more dragons for The Mountain’s fantasy line and he’s been working closely with us ever since. Vincent has been instrumental in the creation of the now infamous Big Face line of tees and he continues to play a major role in the development of new product lines for The Mountain year after year. His favorite subject matter is in the science fiction realm, though he also very much enjoys fantasy, dark fantasy, and animals. Anything that is a bit out of the ordinary. As the only daughter of military parents, Tami and her brothers grew up in Italy and Japan as well as several different states in the US. Exposed to exotic cultures, people and wildlife from an early age, Tami became acutely aware of the beauty and importance of the natural world. Her artistic abilities were apparent by age twelve when the fascination for animals captured her attention and she began expressing her love of them through realism art using graphite and charcoal. Her unique interpretation of wildlife developed over time and eventually became her life’s work. Tami began designing digital wildlife art for The Mountain intermittently in 2006 and by 2009 joined forces with them in a more exclusive venture. The Mountain provided her with the extraordinary opportunity to advance professionally while maintaining the core of her artistic endeavors. Dedicating herself to a life blended by her passion to preserve our world and her love of drawing and painting, Tami now enjoys creating artwork in her home studio in South Carolina using airbrush, graphite, charcoal and acrylics. Her inspiration is derived directly from wildlife and is evident in the intricacies of her magnificent subjects.

Michael McGloin is the Art & Creative Director at The Mountain®. He got his start as a boy, copying his father’s drawings of Sunday Comics and learning arts & crafts from his mother. He credits his parents, who set him on the path that led to his artistic success. In 1990, Michael landed a screen printing job in his hometown of Keene, NH, thanks to a shirt he designed for his brother’s band. After working there a year he started printing his own line of shirts & selling them at music events, veering away from band related “bootlegs” and towards the psychedelic art that he loved. After establishing a distinct look and feel for the line, he invited his artist friends to contribute, and his company, “ArtWear,” was born. ArtWear was built on the simple principle that an Artist owns their work and receives royalties on every item sold. It began to take off, and before long he was selling ArtWear to retailers throughout New England. In late 1991, Michael was introduced to two entrepreneurs with a chain of retail stores. He started printing shirts for them to sell in those stores and in 1992 he was invited to become a part of their company. He was charged with creating and defining their brand; a brand soon to be known around the world as a leader in the screen printed apparel industry. That brand is The Mountain. Michael’s inspiration comes from everywhere. He lives in the woods nestled on a wildlife pond, surrounded by animals. He makes a concerted effort to avoid looking at what other t-shirt companies are doing so he can remain original and true to the brand’s nature. “My passion is finding the perfect artists for our brand,” says Michael. And he does, with great success. Michael lives in Marlborough, NH with his wife Jennifer and their twins Griffin & EV.

Patrick Lamontagne is a cartoonist, illustrator, and digital painter. Having grown up in a military family, he is a self-described “base brat” and spent much of his young life living overseas. This afforded him the unique opportunity to see parts of the world he may not have otherwise seen and exposed him to a wealth of European history and culture. His family eventually settled in Alberta, where he still resides with his wife of twenty years. A lifelong artist, Patrick began selling his work at age 27. A local weekly newspaper was advertising for an editorial cartoonist, a position for which he was hired. Three years later he became nationally syndicated and in 2005 was able to quit his full-time job to follow his dream of becoming a professional artist. “Fortunately, every year has been better than the one before and I never looked back,” says Patrick. In 2009 Patrick painted his first whimsical animal portrait, a grizzly bear, and since then the animals have become a large part of his artistic life. Patrick draws his inspiration from his surroundings. “I’m fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and the Canadian Rockies have an abundance of wildlife,” he says. He spends a lot of time outdoors, and is rarely without his camera when exploring the canyons and trails near his home. He uses the photos he takes as references for his art, sometimes holding on to a photograph for years before it feels right to paint. Two of Patrick’s digital paintings received Guru Awards at the 2010 Photoshop World Conference in Las Vegas including the Best in Show. Another earned the Best in Show in 2014. A book of his work is scheduled to be released in 2017 through Renegade Arts Entertainment.

James started his professional career in the Video Games industry in 1991. During his 12 and a half year tenure in games he worked in-house for companies in the UK and the USA. Aside from a busy daytime schedule he also took on Freelance assignments in the evenings and on weekends. James has had 2 books published and has contributed illustrations to numerous Fantasy Role Playing Games. In 2004 he decided it was time to try freelancing full time and it’s been fantastic so far. He’s done everything from movie concept art to illustrations for beer taps! James currently works on Magic the Gathering, the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, Sony Online’s ‘PoxNora’ as well as creating images for The Mountain®. Other companies he’s worked for over the past few years include Marvel Licensing (Iron Man 2, Thor), Abandon Mobile (Freaky Pets) and Sellers Publishing (Zombies Calendars). James resides in Nuneaton, Warwishire in the United Kingdom, and is notoriously camera shy. Thus the digital representation of his persona here. Even though he “runs when he sees a camera,” he does use one to collect reference photos for some of his art. His work is remarkable, taking viewers into a dark fantasy realm that few artists are able to achieve. It is all at once titillating and horrifying, emanating raw emotion and power through the extraordinary level of detail found in his renderings.

Jerry LoFaro’s art has be seen on the book covers of most major publishers and he’s created advertising and promotional illustrations for a wide variety of high end clients. He has received many awards for his work, including 2 Bronze Medals from The Society of Illustrators of L.A., and the best in advertising in Spectrum Vol. 1, 2 and 6. In 1996, he was presented The Vargas Award for lifetime achievement in illustration and for his contributions to the airbrush industry. In 2007 he earned The Grand Master Award from Ballistic Publishing’s “Expose,” a collection of the year’s best digital art, along with The Excellence Award in the 2009 edition. In 2009, he had the great honor of being awarded a Gold Medal from The Society of Illustrators of NY in the Advertising category of Illustrators 51. Jerry is a highly regarded and popular instructor, having taught classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, New England College and at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, along with leading seminars around the United States sponsored by Airbrush Action Magazine. JerryLoFaroDesigns.com is his portfolio and e-commerce site showcasing his growing collection of dynamic T-shirt designs from The Mountain, along with his personal history. “I love my line of Mountain shirts, and they have become a big part of my identity beyond the recognition I’ve achieved as a top tier illustrator,” says Jerry. Jerry left New York City in 1995, and lives in Henniker, New Hampshire with his wife Kathleen and son Gregory, who became a US Marine in April, 2014.

Scott Ian Barry has worked firsthand with 40 wolves, lived with 10, and observed the behavior of over 100. He has personally performed in excess of 2,500 lectures at schools, universities and museums, and is the only human being in the history of New York City’s Carnegie Hall, to present a live wolf on-stage, who howled with a sold-out audience of 2,200 people. Mr. Barry has aided the states of New York, New Jersey, and Maryland in forming legislation on the ownership of wolves and wolf-dog hybrids. He has lobbied in Congress to support The Federal Airborne Hunting Act, to halt the shooting of wolves in Alaska, from aircraft, and has met with President Carter on behalf of wolves and protection of the environment. His stunning photographs of wolves, in the Black & White photographic medium, appeared in his first book, The Kingdom of Wolves, which won The Outstanding Science Trade Book Award from the National Science Teachers Association, and in his own best-selling calendars. His work has been featured on NBC’s Today Show, in The New York Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Washington Post, Audubon Magazine, and many other publications throughout North America. After privately viewing Scott Ian Barry’s award-winning Animal Empire portfolio, revered photographer Ansel Adams invited Mr. Barry to his home in Carmel, California, calling his images “Striking, generous portraits of our most beloved animals.” He currently resides in Woodstock, New York.

John Emanuel Shannon is a self-taught digital artist, having learned his trade through the diligent study of various art magazines and books, as well as sitting through more than a few tutorials online. A relative latecomer to the world of art, he began drawing at the age of 30, after having been introduced to the wonderful world of Photoshop by a friend. “I quickly became hooked,” states John. John has always had an interest in fantasy art, and has been inspired by the works of Tolkien, John Howe, and Alan Lee. Though currently he holds down a day job as a Chef, his ultimate goal is to one day be able to leave the food service business and pursue a career as an artist full-time. He has been granted a few freelance assignments, including a couple of book covers, of which he is very proud. John’s work portrays a wide variety of fantastical creatures, from elves and fairies, to organic beings made entirely of tree branches, leaves, or even stone. Additionally he has several pieces in his portfolio that depict warriors going into battle. Sometimes they are pitted against a mighty army and sometimes against their own demons. Either way, the images are powerful and remind one of a time long past; a time of great heroism; when there was a clear line between good and evil. His imagination is boundless and his renderings evoke a strong feeling of mysticism that is entirely unique to the fantasy genre. John was born in Sheffield England. He currently resides on the beautiful island of Malta with his son, Julian.

Art has always been an obsession for Lisa who was born in Devon, England in 1974. Constantly drawing animals from the age of 3 years, and rarely without a sketchbook (or her beloved dogs) there was never really a question of her doing anything else. She studied Natural History Illustration at Bournemouth and Poole Institute of Art and Design and enjoyed a successful career holding numerous solo and joint exhibitions, many of them in prestigious locations such as the Mall galleries in London. In the latter years Lisa’s career moved into designing merchandise covering a wide range of products that have been sold worldwide. This had led her into the realms of witchcraft and fantasy. Her love of witchcraft and wildlife come together to create beautiful and unique designs that have been popular with consumers around the world. These days Lisa works solely as a freelance artist and is mostly known for her “witchy cat” artworks. Her love of animals is very apparent in the images she creates. Her artwork is licensed to a vast collection of products including watches, t-shirts, books, bags, greeting cards, duvet covers, silver jewelry and figurines.

“When you ask anyone to describe their idea of Heaven rarely do they describe tall buildings and busy roads. Most people picture nature in all its glory. Heaven was right here all the time, somehow we’ve just forgotten that.”

Artist Collin Bogle has created a national following for his strikingly realistic wildlife and floral images. The son of a renowned American artist, Collin learned the concepts of technique, composition and design from his father, later refining his skills and setting out on his own artistic path. His remarkable ability to capture detail and to master the use of light in natural settings became hallmarks of his work. “I strive to create magical moments in nature where attributes such as composition, lighting, color and animal expression come together in perfect harmony. I want to show the viewer something lively and spectacular they wouldn’t normally get to see, from the vibrant colors of backlit autumn leaves to the warm breath of a howling wolf,” states the artist. Collin’s paintings are not limited to any one subject or medium and demonstrate great flexibility and technical versatility. Bogle uses pastels, colored pencils, watercolor and acrylics, whatever it takes to create the superbly-lighted, realistic and almost photographic images that have gained him an impressive reputation and following. Collin Bogle has exhibited in art shows throughout the United States and his originals are on display in prominent galleries nationwide.

Andreas Lie is an engineering student from Haugesund, now living in Bergen, Norway. He’s 24 and has found an international audience with his work, most notably with the series “Norwegian Wood” that merges portraits of Norwegian animals with the landscapes in which they live. The use of digital double exposure – a process which involves merging two unique photographs to create one piece of art - provides a unique and wonderful expression and by using a simple idea in a new way he’s quickly become a recognizable artist. Lie’s images reflect a deep appreciation for nature and the wildlife that inhabits the wilderness near his home. He is fortunate to live in a place surrounded by majestic mountains and wild spaces, which are undoubtedly an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him in his work. His unique images typically feature a single animal, set in sharp contrast to the negative space that surrounds it, and filled with images of their natural habitats. Contained within the stark shape of the animal you’ll find forest scenes, mountains, water, and other scenic vistas that are then blended seamlessly with the texture of the animal’s fur or feathers, as the case may be. The work of Andreas Lie is truly extraordinary in its subtlety. His images speak volumes about the interconnectedness of nature and the creatures that inhabit this planet alongside us. We welcome Andreas as one of The Mountain®’s newest artists, and look forward to presenting his work in our 2016 ArtWear Collection.

THE MOUNTAIN + OPERATION HAT TRICK The Mountain is proud to introduce a new line of quality collegiate apparel in partnership with Operation Hat Trick. Operation Hat Trick generates awareness and support for the recovery of wounded service members and veterans through the sale of OHT branded merchandise and donates to those organizations that fulfill OHT’s mission. These include Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, the Mission Continues, the Wounded Warrior Bonfire Project, The Travis Mills Foundation, Navy SEAL Foundation, Semper Fi Fund, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, VA Medical Center in Washington DC, Ironstone Farm, Project Sanctuary and UNH’s Northeast Passage. Founded at the University of New Hampshire, OHT is dedicated to Nate Hardy and Mike Koch, two Navy SEALS who were killed in Iraq in 2008. Through a partnership with The Mountain and participating collegiate institutions, pro and minor league teams, retailers and corporations, OHT is able to help those recovering from unthinkable injuries. To date 240 colleges, along with 70 Minor League Baseball teams, 16 NHL teams, and over 35 companies, have adopted OHT and actively support their mission.

The Mountain has a long history of giving back and acting locally to help build a stronger community. Both The Mountain and OHT have roots in New Hampshire and as such are a natural partnership. As pioneers of such a noble cause, OHT is an organization The Mountain is proud to support.
