Forge forges marketing plans

Robinson still has his doubts By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer

PIGEON FORGE — City leaders approved the tourism marketing plans Monday evening, after much dissent from Commissioner Randal Robinson. Tourism Director Leon Downey hailed the deals with Internet mar-

keting firm USDM and BOHAN Advertising. The City Commission for the most part agreed, with Robinson’s the only vote against the actions. Robinson only lodged two official no votes, though he questioned both contracts and the firms’ scope of work. He has made criticizing those contracts something of a theme in his still fairly new term. His dissent came to a head in recent days. Approving the new plans went before the City Commission, and workshops were held in an attempt to address his concerns. Despite all assurances, Robinson

still seemed wary at the end of the meeting, eliciting frustration from other city officials who say they’ve done everything they can to ease his concerns. “I think you’re trying to get this board to go out and look for problems when we don’t have any now,” Mayor Keith Whaley said. “I think we have reasonable security on this.” That was Whaley’s response to Robinson’s continued worries the city may need to bid out its advertising work. The city has been working for nearly a decade with BOHAN, a

Nashville-based marketing/advertising company. In that time, Robinson points out, the city has never sought offers from competing firms or even updated the original contract until Monday evening. City attorney Jim Gass maintains the board’s annual approval of a budget item for BOHAN work constitutes renewal of the agreement. Further, Gass asserts state law does not require the city to bid so-called professional services — work that can only be done by specialized firms. Gass believes the marketing contract See plans, Page A5

High school exams, originally scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, will be given to students the first two days that Sevier County schools are back in session. “They have their books, so they’re prepared,” Debra Cline, director of curriculum and instruction, said Tuesday. Tuesday was Day 6 of the school system’s 13 snow days, Cline said, which are determined by the state. “Several times in my career we’ve exceeded the number of snow days, and the director of schools has had to adjust the school calendar,” she said. Director of Schools Jack Parton announced at Monday’s school board meeting that he had crews out at 4:30 a.m. that day surveying road conditions. School officials also consult the local police departments when determining if classes should be canceled. “I don’t just look out the window,” Parton said. “Trust me, I want our children back in school as quickly as possible — but I also want them to be safe See exams, Page A5

Sevierville PD training seminar puts teeth into K-9 patrol method By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — Sixty teams of human and canine officers from police departments around the region took part in a training seminar put on by the Sevierville Police Department. The K-9 Team Street Survival Seminar in the Smokies has become a tradition among local law enforcement, with 2009 representing the 21st year of the class. Programs have included the former chief of the Los Angeles Police Department and some internationally known trainers. “This seminar is designed to enhance canine team proficiency at basic and advanced levels with a focus on patrol and narcotics detection,” said Lt. Eddie Helton, who coordinates the program and is himself part of a local team. “The most advanced techniques and methods in law enforcement canine patrol and narcotic detection are discussed and demonstrated.” Dogs that work in law enforcement are required to go through regular training to keep their skills fresh and learn new ones. As it turns out, even old police dogs can learn plenty of new tricks.

“It’s truly amazing what you can train a dog to do for law enforcement,” Helton says. “This really helps these canine teams because there is always something new out there that can help us do our jobs.” This year’s seminar took the teams to locations throughout the city: Smokies Stadium, the fairgrounds, Sevierville City Park, a local apartment complex and even Walmart. The sessions were led by the folks from Cobra Canines, a program based in Virginia that prepared Helton’s dog for its service. They offered training that honed the teams’ ability to detect narcotics, catch shoplifters, defuse hostage situations and deal with aggressive criminals. Those courses take place in settings that mimic real-life scenarios, like a captive being held in an apartment, a shoplifter fleeing Walmart and a fleeing criminal in City Park. Additionally, time was focused on training the dogs to detect traces of narcotics, something they have to be able to do in a large room in less than three minutes. Those traces can be something as minor as a common item that has been touched just See sminar, Page A4

Sevierville Chamber, PBA may partner to promote Events Center By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer

SEVIERVILLE — The Public Building Authority could soon start partnering with the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce to advertise the Events Center. The PBA discussed the idea at length for the first time at its regular meeting Monday. Mike Wilds, development and marketing director for the Events Center, said it was common for cities to start using an “in-house agency to advertise after getting initial word out about a new Events Center. The PBA placed ads in several publications that cater to event organizers before opening the Sevierville Events Center at Bridgemont and since. “Now that we’re in our third year, it’s time to start touting our success, Wilds said. The center’s reputation is starting to spread by word of mouth, he said, as groups that have been hosting events there have noted they’ve had larger than normal crowds even during the recession. Amanda Marr, marketing director for the chamber, said the chamber could generate ads that would help tout the success and also what the city has to offer for attendees. “There’s a wide variety of things you can do (near the Events Center), she said. “I think that’s the thing we ought to shift and tell about now. The move could also give the chamber an additional, long-term source of funding, City Administrator Steve Hendrix noted. The chamber generally has to come to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen to seek funding each year. “That’s something I think the city needs to change, Hendrix said. Also at the meeting, the PBA: n Approved several change orders for work on the Eagles Landing Golf Course n Renewed a contract with Cane Creek Sod n Approved the purchase of 6,300 additional banquet chairs for the Events Center n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

SEVIERVILLE — Fanatics from throughout the Southeast didn’t let Saturday’s ice and snow keep them from the Pokemon City Championship Tournament, held at First United Methodist Church. Pokemon is a media franchise published and owned by Nintendo. First created by Japanese video game designer Satoshi Tajiri in 1996, it has since spawned into anime, manga, trading cards, toys, books and other media. “My son was given a pack of Pokemon cards in 1998 by his cousins, said Keith Haas, Pokemon tournament organizer for East Tennessee. “Now he’s 15, and he’s still playing. Tournament participants play with a 60-card playing deck of the trading cards, with certain rules and regulations of what can be put in the deck. The 40-minute rounds are split into three age groups: Junior Division includes those born in 1999 and younger; Senior Division, those born from 1995-1998; and Masters Division, those born in 1994 and before. Prizes were given to the top four in each age group. “We have folks here today from Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Cleveland and Chattanooga, as well as locals, said Haas, who has traveled across the country judging tournaments. “The social interaction is great, and it’s a very strategic game. The main thing is that we have fun. “My daughter got me into this, said Tom Wise of Asheville, N.C. “It’s a lot of fun, and I like winning stuff. Noah Sawyer, 9, of Chattanooga, encountered his first Pokemon trading card at a yard sale. “It’s fun challenging your friends, he said. “When I first started playing, I knew it would be. n ebrown@themountainpress.com

State special legislative session first since 2006 Bredesen urges quick passage of education plans By ERIK SCHELZIG Associated Press Writer NASHVILLE — The Legislature on Tuesday convened the second session of the 106th Tennessee General Assembly and quickly agreed to go into a special session on education called by Gov. Phil Bredesen. The Democratic governor was addressed a joint session of the House and Senate later Tuesday to make his case for the changes in K-12 education that he says are needed to strengthen the state’s application for $485 million in federal “Race to the Top money. The application is due on Jan. 19. One area of contention is Bredesen’s proposal to make student testing data a major factor in evaluating teachers and making tenure decisions. Bredesen urged lawmakers to quickly approve his education proposals in

a special session. In a speech to lawmakers on Tuesday, the Democratic governor noted that out of every 100 ninth-graders, only 19 go on to earn a college degree. In Bredesen’s words, “We’ve got to do better. Bredesen is also proposing a series of changes in higher education, including changing the state’s funding formula to emphasize graduation rates instead of enrollment.

By calling a special session, the governor was able to limit the scope of lawmakers’ deliberations. He plans to make his annual budget presentation to lawmakers on Feb. 1. Both chambers began their first floor sessions of the year with a moment of silence and prayer for former Senate Speaker John Wilder, who died on Jan. 1. When the Mason Democrat’s 36-year tenure as Senate speaker ended in 2007, he was the longest serving presiding officer of a legislative chamber in modern U.S. history, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Wilder retired a year later after losing the leadership vote to current Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville. The education special session is the state’s first since 2006, when lawmakers passed a sweeping set of ethics laws in the aftermath of the FBI’s Tennessee Waltz corruption sting that led to the convictions of five former lawmakers.

as possible. Not everyone (in the school system) lives on Main Street USA. Cline said that although the most mountainous areas of the county are at times the only spots affected by inclement weather, it is necessary that all 26 schools close. “We are a unified school system. We have one school calendar, and our buses run throughout the county. Many people don’t realize how different it is for buses to travel in this weather (than other vehicles). When school officials announce that classes will begin two hours late, it provides crews more time to examine the roads for safety, Cline said. “We are very sympathetic to families who have to rearrange their plans in order to find care for their child. But the very most important thing always will be safety. We’ve got to keep the best interest of the child. For school updates, check Sevier County Schools’ Web site, www.sevier.org. n ebrown@themountainpress.com

in ads they get 15 percent of $3 million. Whaley seemed intrigued, pushing David Bohan to explain how the city can be assured it’s getting the most for its money. Bohan corrected Robinson, pointing out the sales commission drops to 13 percent after a certain number of advertising purchases. In defense of the practice, Bohan said the Department of Tourism is given numbers that indicate how much of a bargain the firm is getting in its buys. That documentation proves the company is consistently at or below the industry average prices for the

marketing it buys, Bohan said. “Our goal is to buy with the greatest efficiency so we can get more air time for the city, he said. “We can buy an ad cheaper in Newport than in Atlanta, but which one’s going to bring us the most business? After all the discussion, Robinson said he’s still not pleased with the agreements and wishes the group had more time to consider them. “I understand there are problems and we can’t solve them all, he said, “but I don’t see how we can just bury our heads in the sand. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

is for a professional service. Though that opinion has been backed up by the University of Tennessee’s Municipal Technical Advisory Service, Robinson has said an official with the state’s Division of Municipal Audit told him the contract might need to be bid. “If we go into this knowing that there is a question about the potential legality of this, are we liable as a board? Robinson asked. “I think you are insulated by the advice of counsel, Gass answered. “I think you’re further insulated by the opinion of MTAS if any questions should arise. Gass said state law requiring cities to secure bids for certain work is to ensure the best price for labor or supplies that can be provided by a number of companies. However, not everyone can perform “professional services, and the lowest cost doesn’t always yield the best value — thus the exemption, Gass said. At times Robinson questioned Downey on changes Robinson himself had insisted be made to the contracts, including asking why the group was now discussing the issues after years of inactivity. “Why not just keep operating on the old contract? We’ve done it for nine years, Robinson said. “What is our advantage to changing this at this point? “It was my understanding,

commissioner, that it was your request that we look at this, Downey said. Robinson also accused firm owner David Bohan of overcharging the city, before it was pointed out Robinson had miscalculated the invoices. Robinson disagrees with TV programs on which the city’s advertising runs in some markets. Those include the religious “700 Club and the “Sex and the City movie. Robinson did manage to score one win during the debate. In the contract with USDM, Robinson noted the only ways for the city to cancel the deal were failures on USDM’s part to fulfill the obligations, with no possibility the city might back out for its own reasons. “Thank you, commissioner, that was a good catch, Gass said. “If the board votes to approve this contract, it should be with the stipulation that the city be allowed to terminate the contract with 90 days notice. Robinson questions the sales commission BOHAN charges for ad buys. He has expressed concern on several occasions about the charge the company adds to the purchases. Downey has argued it’s standard practice in the marketing business, but Robinson believes it’s bad business. “We’re approving another contract with no incentive for BOHAN to buy our media at a lower price, Robinson said. “If they buy $2 million in ads, they only get 15 percent of $2 million, but if they buy $3 million

Paper on voting machines delayed NASHVILLE (AP) — The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to delay a law requiring a paper trail on voting machines until the 2012 election cycle. The 22-10 vote was the chamber’s second run at the measure after it failed to gain a majority by one vote on the last day of last year’s legislative session. Sen. Doug Overbey, R-Maryville, voted for the delay. As much as $37 million in federal funding is available under the

Help America Vote Act — passed in the aftermath of Florida’s 2000 general election debacle — to buy the machines in Tennessee. But several county election officials, including dozens who watched from the Senate gallery, have raised concerns that costs may exceed the federal funding. Sen. Bill Ketron, R-Murfreesboro and the measure’s main sponsor, argued that the next generation of new machines are being designed for the

2012 election cycle, and that Tennessee needs to carefully consider which machines to buy because the next round of purchases will exhaust federal funds. “Ladies and gentlemen, we need to get this right,” Ketron told his colleagues on the Senate floor. “And we can’t keep purchasing these machines like it’s made out of candy.” The delay was supported by Republican Secretary of State Tre Hargett, whose office oversees elections in the

state. “The issue is to protect county taxpayers and to not spend $30 million on old technology,” he said. Democratic Sen. Roy Herron of Dresden said electronic voting machines can be tampered with, “and without a paper audit trail, there’s just no way to know.” The Senate action came just before the chamber gaveled into a special legislative session on education called by Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen.

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker’s top aide says the Tennessee Republican has nothing to do with the Internet address corkerforpresident.com but he describes it as flattering and isn’t calling for its removal. Corker chief of staff Todd Womack said that he could not say who owns the domain name that links directly to Corker’s official Senate . “We are flattered by the compliment and kind gesture, but Sen. Corker is 100 percent focused on being a Tennessee senator,” Womack said. Womack declined to discuss the possibility of a Corker presidential bid in 2012 or beyond. “It’s just not something that is a focus for us,” he said Tuesday. A lifelong friend of Corker’s, David Blunt, said Monday that he registered the name. NASHVILLE

Turner replaces late husband

Johnnie Turner has been sworn in to replace her husband in District 85 of the Tennessee House of Representatives. Turner’s husband, Larry Turner, died of cancer in November. After her swearing in on Tuesday, she thanked lawmakers for their support during the Memphis Democrat’s illness. The Shelby County Commission selected Johnnie Turner earlier this week. Johnnie Turner, a leader in the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, will serve the rest of his term.

commentary

Unpopular role of ‘Ins’ playing out The official U.S. unemployment rate on the midterm Election Day stood at 10 percent. According to the Gallup Poll, only one out of three voters approved of the president’s handling of the economy, and a majority believed that the president’s economic program would worsen rather than improve their own financial situations. The president — whose job rating would drop to 35 percent favorable by January — was Ronald Reagan. The year was 1982. And the Republicans lost 26 seats in the U.S. House. Twelve years later, the unemployment rate was just 5.8 percent. The young Democratic leader — whose job approval would drop to 37 percent, the following January — took most of the blame when his party lost 52 House seats and majority control in the first midterm election of the Bill Clinton presidency. The question both Democrats and Republicans are asking each other this January is: Will Election Day 2010 for the Democrats be 1982 — a stinging setback — or 1994 — an unmitigated disaster? Alan Ginsburg, a historian friend of mine, suggests a third possibility: that 2010 could turn out to be more like 1990, when voters, widely disgusted with Washington’s direction of the country and not pleased with their first-term Republican president George Herbert Walker Bush, limited the OutParty Democrats to a pick-up of just seven House seats. But, more significantly, for the only time in a century, winning House incumbents in 1990 of both parties saw voters across the country reduce their winning margins from the previous election. This 1990 national vote-ofless-confidence was the clear signal of the political upheaval that would follow in the next four years, including Ross Perot’s independent candidacy, Mr. Bush’s defeat and the Republican congressional victory. Made sense to me. It is true that even as voters’ confidence in the ruling Democrats has been shaken, there has been no increase in public support of the Republicans. But according to Gary Jacobson of the University of California San Diego, an authority on congressional voting, the midterm elections are almost always “a referendum on the party in power” — and even more so when the same party controls both the Congress and the White House. Midterm elections are not, fortunately for the GOP at this point, a referendum on the Out Party, its leadership or its legislative program. One encouraging sign for the Democrats, who need all they can get: In the 1994 rout, 40 of the 52 House seats the Democrats lost that year were “open” seats where there was no incumbent. When the re-election success rate of incumbent House members has been above 95 percent, if the Democrats can keep the number of their colleagues retiring in 2010 to single digits, their party should be able to avoid any recurrence of a 1994 tsunami. Jacobson acknowledges the current widespread voter displeasure with the status quo and political incumbents, but adds that in 2010 “I’d rather be a status-quo Republican than a statusquo Democrat.” He adds that the energy and enthusiasm, especially from young and minority voters, that fueled Barack Obama’s 2008 victory and a net pickup of 54 Democratic House seats in the last two elections, appears to have significantly switched to the Republican side. What 2010 looks like now is the third straight national election which is between the Ins and the Outs, or more accurately, about throwing the Ins Out. In 2006 and 2008, the Republicans were the In. For 2010, the unpopular role of the Ins will be played by the Democrats, who right now must be lighting candles that Alan Ginsburg could be right — that they dodge the bullet of history, and 2010 turns out to be another 1990. — Mark Shields is a veteran political campaign manager and frequent television talk show commentator. On top of the world Many lessons to be learned from Tennessee’s shocking win In science class we were taught that the bumblebee is too big aerodynamically to fly. It flies anyway because nobody told it that it couldn’t. You would have been hard-pressed to find anyone who follows college basketball that truly thought Tennessee could defeat Kansas last Sunday. The coach and players did, though, because they believed it and nobody could tell them anything different. The tape of that marvelous game should be played in all classrooms, Sunday school classes and Boys & Girls Club sites. There can be no better proof of perseverance and determination than what was displayed at that game. Just think about the facts that surrounded the game. Tennessee had lost four players to suspensions for their alleged involvement in a crime. One of them was a team leader, Tyler Smith, who, two days before the Kansas game, was kicked off the team for good.

Tennessee was fielding a team that included three walk-ons without scholarships. Kansas was undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country. It was, to say the least, an apparent mismatch, something like the Indianapolis Colts playing Vanderbilt. Like the bumblebee that flies against all scientific logic, nobody could convince the Vols they couldn’t win. You think it’s hard for parents to get their teenagers to take out the garbage? Try telling a group of enthusiastic, excited kids they can’t win a game against the country’s best team. Backed by 21,000 fans clearly in their corner, the Vols won the game, shocked the basketball world and set off a celebration not seen in Thompson-Boling. It had been more than 40 years since Tennessee defeated a No. 1 basketball team in Knoxville, and that was in the old arena. Unfortunately, the CBS network cut away from the game as the celebra-

tion began, but the flavor of it came through on the radio. You had to be there to fully experience the joy of this win. Can Tennessee keep up this level of play through the conference schedule? Doubtful. But hey, didn’t we all doubt they could win Sunday? How the team fares in the SEC seems secondary to how they reacted to adversity and defeated a superior team. Coach Bruce Pearl and his gang of kids feel they can conquer the world now. They have the proof of their deeds, of what hard work and dedication can mean. There are a lot of life lessons to be learned from that basketball game. If you think you can win, you can win, someone once said; faith is necessary to victory. The Vol basketball team is a collection of believing young men with faith in their abilities and a leader who inspires. Those are the ingredients of true winners, no matter the score of the game.

ber of years, as well as his popular “Blast From The Past” ensemble show. Matt is a versatile performer, but his first love is promoting the memory of Elvis and his music. In between scheduled matinees at the Smith Theater, Matt has performed special engagements at several of the theaters you mentioned in your editorial. In 2009 alone, Matt also included shows in cities throughout Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. In August of last year, Matt won second place at the 2009 Ultimate

Elvis Concert at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino. Matt’s Elvis concert at the Gem Theater in Etowah last year was the first time they ever had a sold-out performance. We understand editorial space is limited, but we feel the Smith Family Theater, where Matt performs regularly, certainly rated equal acknowledgment and mention. PREP HOOPS

G-P boys heating up Highlanders ranked 3rd in state poll By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer GATLINBURG — The Gatlinburg-Pittman boys’ basketball team was ranked No.3 in the state in the AP poll released this week for the 2009-10 season, and while it’s an honor for the Blue-and-Gold team to be thought of so highly, the Highlanders are keeping things in perspective and preparing for business as usual with two important District 3-AA clashes looming later this week. “I’m pretty sure that’s the highest Gatlinburg-Pittman (basketball) has ever been ranked,” said Highlanders coach Raul Placeres. “It’s a testament to how hard this team has worked, and to how much time and work the kids have put into getting better in the gym on their own and with the team. “It’s exciting, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to coach a team like this, a team with so much talent. “But right now, we’re just going game by game. No game is bigger than the next.” Coaches have to preach things like that to their teams, but for any fan looking at the G-P schedule, Thursday’s home game against Union (10-6) is big, but Saturday’s home game against Fulton (11-2) is even bigger for the Highlanders (13-1). “But to us, Thursday and Saturday are just two district games that we have to go out and win,” said Placeres. The Highlanders cruised to an easy 73-29 Monday night win over visiting county rival The King’s Academy Lions (3-10), but Tuesday night’s road trip to county neighbor Cosby Eagles (7-3) was called off due to weather conditions. Placeres was disappointed that Tuesday’s game was postponed, because it would have

given the Highlanders one more non-district game before entering a 13-game stretch where G-P is scheduled to play 11 District 3-AA contests. Before Monday night’s win against TKA, the Highlanders hadn’t played a game since Dec. 23, due to the recent snowy weather. (Besides Monday), “it’s been about three weeks since we’ve played,” said Placeres. “I’m not making excuses, though, because everyone else is in the same boat right now.” Monday night against TKA, the Highlanders sailed to a 44-point win despite some considerable rust. PREP BASKETBALL

Bears’ matchup with Highlanders will be huge Two of states’ top-ranked teams will slug it out for county bragging rights If you’re planning on packing into the GatlinburgPittman gymnasium as the Highlanders host countyrival Sevier County later this month, you better get there early. For what’s likely the first time ever, two of the Associated Press’s top-ranked boys teams are from Sevier County, and Monday, Jan. 25, they’ll lock horns in what could be the most anticipated basketball game in Sevier County history. Aside from the usual county rivalry stuff, this game is loaded with backstory. To begin with, Sevier County head coach Ken Wright used to coach the Highlanders. In 2001-2002 he coached the Highlanders to a 28-6 record and the region semifinals. After three seasons without returning to prominence, Wright chose to accept the vacated coaching position at Sevier County High School. At SCHS Wright’s teams have shown marked improvement, and in his fifth season the team has started 13-1 and earned what’s quite possibly

their first AP Top 10 ranking. As Sevier County has ascended to new heights this season, so have the GatlinburgPittman Highlanders. Under third-year head coach Raul Placeres, the Blue and Gold have also shown much improvement. In Placeres’s first two seasons at G-P, the Highlanders combined for a 32-24 record, including two straight region tournament appearances. This year, behind stars Morrease Barber, Jose Augusto and McKinley Maples, the team has run out to a 13-1 start and has some believing they could make a postseason run if they get hot at tournament time. Adding to the backstory in the Sevier County matchup are Marquise Wall and Garrett Buckner, two big contributors to the Highlanders team that came to the team from SCHS. While the two didn’t play on Wright’s team at Sevier County, their transfers to G-P, along with those of Agosto and Barber, who both came in from out of state, have added fuel to the rivalry fire. Further fanning the flames are the words of the coaches themselves. Claims that one team is the best in the county or another has been built the right way

haven’t gone unnoticed, and fans from both sides of the gym will be passionate Jan. 25. While neither coach would readily admit it, there will be a lot of pride caught up in this game. And though the contest doesn’t matter for postseason play — it’s not a district game — it could be just as important for the winner. The momentum and selfconfidence a win could create is well worth an all-out effort by both teams. It should be a whale of a game. My biggest concern as a fan of both teams would be that there be ample security. Eugene Huskey Gymnasium isn’t the largest venue in Sevier County, and if there’s a giant crowd for the game, watch out. With cramped conditions in what’s likely to become a sweatbox, it only stands to reason that tempers will flare — especially when the teams take the floor. Having seen how fans can overreact to physical play on the court and nip and tuck officiating from the referees, I’d guess there will be lots of shouting and howling from the bleachers. It’ll be an electric environment, and one I wouldn’t recommend any high school basketball fan with a pulse miss. I know I’ll be there — and I’ll definitely be early. jdavis@themountainpress.com

Dear Annie: I am 56 and have a 45-yearold brother, “Bruce.” Although I was close to him, he and my mother never got along, and when Bruce married, he ceased all communications with the family. He showed up for our parents’ funerals, but Mom died two years ago, and I haven’t heard from Bruce since. I recently e-mailed him to ask whether he wanted a ring that had belonged to our father. I received no response. Bruce and his wife have one daughter. Since she is my niece, I send gifts and cards on her birthday and Christmas, as well as small gifts and cards to my brother and his wife. In return, they send us their annual photocopied Christmas newsletter. If not for my niece, who is now 9, I wouldn’t bother having any contact at all. I think it is important for her to know she has family who love her on her father’s side, too. What do you think? -Sheila Dear Sheila: Your brother, in his own small way, is maintaining contact. And on the assumption that you receive some type of thank-you note from your niece or her parents, we hope you will continue to send cards and gifts. You are a caring aunt and it shows, even to your brother. You never know what will happen down the road. Dear Annie: I am an 81-year-old man in good health. My wife died more than a year ago. The last three years of our marriage were hell. She was going to file for divorce, but became sick, went

into the hospital and never came out. She died there. Recently, I began dating a woman I have known for 10 years. I am 15 years older than she is. She has been fighting cancer a long time and is doing well. We are going to be married soon, and all of my friends are thrilled. However, my three middle-aged children refuse to accept her. I love this woman very much, and she loves me. I know marrying her is the right thing for both of us. But I don’t know what to do about my kids rejecting her. Please help. -- Don Dear Don: Your children lost their mother a year ago, and they are still grieving. They also may not have been aware that she was planning to divorce you, or they may be in denial about how miserable you were. Kids, even adult ones, tend to assume their parents will work things out eventually. Try talking to them. Say you love them, but this woman makes you happy and you hope they will eventually be more accepting. Don’t push them, but please continue to invite them over, see them often (even without your new wife) and maintain a relationship. They can’t become more comfortable with your new situation unless they are

t o d ay ’ s p u z z l e

routinely exposed to it. Dear Annie: I’m writing in response to “Concerned Daughter,” whose mother drinks too much. I’m 18 and just left for college, and my mother has been an alcoholic since I was 10. While she once tried to get sober, it did not last for more than a few months. I have accepted that you cannot get an alcoholic to admit alcoholism unless he or she wants to, and the only way to cope is to teach oneself coping mechanisms. For me, the only way is to completely detach myself emotionally from my mother. I offer support to “Concerned Daughter” and encourage her to find support with friends and family members. I may never have a decent relationship with my mother, and this is her fault, and I have accepted it. Instead, I have wonderful relationships with my father, relatives and friends. It’s difficult to deal with, especially in my teen years, but it has made me stronger. I wish her all the best, while warning her that a loving relationship with her mother may prove impossible. -- BTDT Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Suicide rising among young male war vets By KIMBERLY HEFLING Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON — Home from war and out of the military, young male veterans appear to be committing suicide at a higher rate. The Veterans Affairs Department said Monday that preliminary data reflects that the suicide rate among 18- to 29-year-old male veterans has increased significantly. It said the rate went up 26 percent from 2005 to 2007. VA officials said they assume that most of the veterans in this age group served in Iraq or Afghanistan. If there is a bright spot in the data, it’s that in 2007 veterans in the group who used VA health care were less likely to commit suicide than those who did not. That’s a change from 2005. In recent years, the VA has hired thousands of new mental health professionals and established a suicide hot line credited with “rescues of nearly 6,000 veterans and military members in distress. The military has also struggled with an increase in suicides, with the Army seeing a record number last year. While the military frequently releases such data, it has been more difficult to track suicide information on veterans once they’ve left active duty. The VA calculated the numbers using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention numbers

n a t i o n / w o rl d brief s Freedom declines 4th straight year

from 16 states. In 2005, the rate per 100,000 veterans among men ages 18-29 was 44.99, compared with 56.77 in 2007, the VA said. It did not release data for other population groups. At a suicide prevention conference on Monday in Washington, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki said his agency needs to do a better job of understanding what led to each suicide. He said he’d also like to see more stringent protocol put into place at VA facilities about how to handle a potentially suicidal veteran, similar to what’s done with someone who’s having a heart attack. He noted that of the more than 30,000 suicides each year in America, about 20 percent are committed by veterans. “Why do we know so much about suicides but still know so little about how to prevent them? Shinseki said. “Simple question, but we continue to be challenged.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The crackdown in Iran in 2009 highlighted a continuing decline in freedom and rights for the fourth consecutive year, the democracy watchdog group Freedom House reported Tuesday. The Middle East remained the most repressive region in the world and Africa sustained the most significant decline, the report said after examining political and civil rights in 194 countries and 14 territories. Jennifer Windsor, executive director of Freedom House, cited attacks on front-line democracy activists, including what she said was brutal repression on the streets of Iran. She also pointed to sweeping detention in China of “Charter 08 advocates of expanding freedom and an end to Communist party dominance, as well as the murders of journalists and human rights activists in Russia.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Reports of airplanes hitting birds and other wildlife have soared since a stricken US Airways jet landed last year in New York’s Hudson River, and the government’s tally for last year could reach or even exceed 10,000 for the first time. The surge in reports for 2009 — expected to be as much as 40 percent higher once the final accounting is in — comes in spite of government concerns that disclosing details about such strikes would discourage reports by airports and airlines out of worries about lost business. The previous high was 7,507 strikes in 2007. The government’s estimate of as many as 10,000 for 2009 would represent about 27 strikes every day. There were at least

57 cases in the first seven months of 2009 that caused serious damage and three in which planes and a corporate helicopter were destroyed by birds, according to an analysis by The Associated Press of the latest government figures available. At least eight people died, and six more were hurt.

Woman who hid Anne Frank dies

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — Without Miep Gies, the story of Anne Frank might never have been known. The former office secretary who helped hide the Jewish teenager from the Nazis for two years gathered up the scattered diary pages after the Frank family was arrested and sent to concentration camps. She locked the papers — unread — in her desk until Frank’s father Otto

returned, the only family member to survive. Gies died Monday from a neck injury suffered when she fell last month, the Anne Frank House museum said. She was 100 and had been one of the few people still alive who knew Anne Frank.

Mystery object to pass Earth today

WASHINGTON (AP) — A mystery object from space is about to whizz close by Earth today. It won’t hit our planet, but scientists are stumped by what exactly it is. Astronomers say it may be space junk or it could be a tiny asteroid, too small to cause damage even if it hit. It’s 33 to 50 feet wide at most. NASA says that at 7:47 a.m. today, it will streak by, missing Earth by about 80,000 miles. In the western United States it may be bright enough to be seen with a good amateur telescope.
