Planners, Ogle may be headed to court
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake flattened the president’s palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and whole neighborhoods. Officials feared thousands — perhaps more than 100,000 — may have perished but there was no firm count. Death was everywhere in Port-au-Prince. Bodies of tiny children were piled next to schools. Corpses of women lay on the street with stunned expressions frozen on their faces as flies began to gather. Bodies of men were covered with plastic tarps or cotton sheets. President Rene Preval said he believes thousands were killed in Tuesday afternoon’s magnitude-7.0

Area Red Cross seeks relief donations From Submitted Reports After an initial pledge of $200,000, the American Red Cross has now committed $1 million to assist communities affected by the earthquake in Haiti. The Red Cross has deployed a disaster management specialist to Haiti and has additional disaster specialists on standby. While not currently accepting local volunteer applications for deploy-
ment to Haiti, those interested in volunteering for local and national disasters in the future should contact the Knoxville area chapter at 584-2999. For inquiries about relatives living and who have citizenship in Haiti, call repeatedly until the lines clear or contact other family members who live nearby. Telephone, Internet and other communication lines are often disrupted in times of disaster.
People trying to locate U.S. citizens living or traveling in Haiti should contact the State Department, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at (888) 407-4747 or (202) 647-5225. The Red Cross is accepting money to support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. Donations to the International Response Fund can be sent to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or made by phone at 800-REDCROSS or online at www.redcross.org.
SEVIERVILLE — County officials and developer Ron Ogle may be set up once again for a battle in local courts after the Planning Commission rejected another of Ogle’s plans. With a lawsuit already pending over the group’s denial of his plan to put 400 h o u s e s on Cove Mountain, Ogle, who Ogle did not a t t e n d Tuesday’s meeting, vowed to The Mountain Press late last week he’ll file another suit if his newest request isn’t approved. “If they turn it down, I’m going to sue,” Ogle said. “I’m not encroaching on anyone whatsoever. (County Planner) Jeff Ownby knows that will meet all the requirements.” The debate centers around property at the intersection of Wears Valley and Valley View roads that Ogle owns and wants to develop with a landscaping and gift shop. The Planning Commission previously gave the plan negative reviews. It rejected it again this week, despite Ogle’s insistence his proposal meets requirements and a site plan to show that. That plat wasn’t distributed along with the other materials the commissioners were given prior to the meeting, though the surveyor who worked on the property was at the meeting and showed it to the group. Though he wasn’t at the session, Ogle insisted in his earlier interview with The Press that the site plan shows his building would be out of the flood hazard area of Cove Creek and would not cause problems with the flow of flood waters. Further, he argued he has tried to do everything he can to alleviate concerns about the site, showing he does See ogle, Page A3

Mercedes Green, a junior at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School and one of the top-ranked skiers in the state, has been having a blast on the slopes at Ober Gatlinburg this ski season.
GATLINBURG — What recession? For those in charge of skiing at Ober Gatlinburg, the struggling national economy has yet to find its to the top of the mountain. “We haven’t felt anything about a recession,” said Thomas Diriwachter, a Switzerland native who has been the director of snow sports for Ober Gatlinburg the past 12 years. “Our numbers have been way up this year, a lot better than last year and probably one of our best Decembers ever.” In fact, Diriwachter said Ober’s numbers are up at least 25 percent from December 2008. According to Diriwachter, the reason has nothing to do with federal stimulus attempts or any improvements in the national economy. “Other years we’ve had what we call ‘variable conditions,’” See ober, Page A4

13,000 expected to attend 25th Resurrection youth conference GATLINBURG — Resurrection, an event for Christian youth, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Over the next two weekends, beginning Friday, more than 13,000 teens will be in Gatlinburg for the youth conference. Resurrection is an evangelistic experience for youths ages 13 to 19 and their adult mentors. It is held at the Gatlinburg Convention Center. “We have a nationally recognized speaker who leads the sessions, in addition to live music, but what makes us different is the way we facilitate a youth’s walk with Christ through their youth group, said Resurrection founder Don Thomas. When Thomas and his fellow youth pastors formed Resurrection in 1985 at Camp Lookout, they had no idea it would grow from a dozen youth groups to thousands. “We expect nearly 7,000 people to attend the first session of Resurrection this weekend, and we expect another 6,000plus to arrive the following Friday, he said. Organizers have some special things planned for the 25th anniversary, including the launch of a special group named Friends of Resurrection. Executive director Jason Roe is hoping to expand
Resurrection’s reach through this new group, which is open to anyone with a connection to the event, past or present. “There are thousands and thousands of people who have been touched by Resurrection over the last 25 years, said Roe. He attended as a youth. “It changed my life and I was only 11 years old, he said. Many of the youth groups that attend Resurrection are from East Tennessee; other groups travel more than 500 miles. They are responsible for their own accommodations; most of the groups stay in local hotels and cabins. Tickets to Resurrection are $30 per person in advance and $45 at the door. “Any interested youth group leader is welcome to come as a guest, said Thomas. Visit
ResurrectionYouth.com for more information. Back by popular demand, Justin Lookadoo will deliver the message at each session. “Justin Lookadoo is one of those guys you just can’t forget, said Roe. “He’s 6-foot-7-inches and has spiky hair, but above all, he can connect with those kids. Music is another tool used to grab the attention of teens. Kristian Stanfill will lead the worship for the first time. “I am so excited to be a part of Resurrection, especially on this special anniversary, said Stanfill.

lot of dead people in them. Even the main prison in the capital fell down, “and there are reports of escaped inmates, U.N. humanitarian spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said in Geneva. The head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission was missing and the Roman Catholic archbishop of Portau-Prince was dead. “The cathedral, the archbishop’s office, all the big churches, the seminaries have been reduced to rubble, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the apostolic envoy to Haiti, told the Vatican news agency FIDES. The parking lot of the Hotel Villa Creole was a triage center. People sat with injuries and growing infections by the side of rubblestrewn roads, hoping that doctors and aid would come. The international Red Cross said a third of Haiti’s 9 million people may need emergency aid and that it would take a day or two for a clear picture of the damage to emerge. At first light Wednesday, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter evacuated four critically injured U.S. Embassy staff to the hospital on the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the military has been detaining suspected terrorists. President Barack Obama promised an all-out rescue and humanitarian effort, adding that the U.S. commitment to its hemispheric neighbor will be unwavering. “We have to be there for them in their hour of need, Obama said. A small contingent of U.S. ground troops could be on their way soon, although it was unclear whether they would be used for security operations or humanitarian efforts. Gen. Douglas Fraser, commander of the U.S. Southern Command, said roughly 2,000 Marines as part of an expeditionary unit might be deployed aboard a large-deck amphibious ship. Fraser said the ship could provide medical help.
not plan to do major earth moving there, hopes to put in a small walking trail at the request of some Wears Valley residents and has more parking in the plan than is required. Ownby apparently wasn’t convinced. He told the group the planning staff evaluated the plan and had a tough time deciding what it should advise the commission to do. “We’ve been torn on a recommendation on this, Ownby said. “We definitely do not recommend it be rezoned to C-2. If you feel strongly about it being commercial, then it should be C-1 and nothing more. Ogle asked that the lot be moved from the county’s lowest zoning, A-1 or agricultural, to its second-highest designation, C-2 general commercial. Ownby said that wouldn’t be necessary for the shop Ogle plans to open. It may be that no zone change is needed given that the county’s rules for A-1 allow agriculture-related businesses, which a landscaping business probably is. Like Ownby, Commissioner Ben Clabo, who led the previous push against the plan, wasn’t on board with Ogle’s proposal. Clabo said he believes there are better, and nearby, opportunities for Ogle to pursue the plan. “I have nothing against Ron Ogle, I just think he’s got property there that is very acceptable and usable. I wonder why we’re just picking out this one little piece of property, Clabo said. Clabo pointed out the

rezoning map Ogle submitted actually shows another, larger piece of property Ogle owns across Valley View Road, though that land was marked through on the map. Clabo believes that site would be better for development. “They have very little opportunity to build there, Clabo said of the land Ogle wants rezoned. “That property is 12 feet below the grade of the road. They’re going to have to build that property up so much, Clabo said. “It would be for them 100 percent developing that (other) property. Still, Clabo is concerned about any development that would need to access Wears Valley Road in the area. “That is a narrow, dangerous curve right before that, Clabo said. “It’s in sort of a blind curve. People drive fast on that road. Planning Commission member Jack Ogle agreed. “I don’t believe the state would approve access off that main road, he said. Diriwachter said with a laugh. “In other words, we had good snow sometimes in the morning that would turn to slushy snow in the afternoon that turned to icy snow in the evening. “This year has been totally different. We’ve had a fantastic (snow) base, always with a little bit of powder. It’s been snowing, and it’s been about as good as it can possibly get. Snow conditions have been terrific this season with all eight slopes open all the time. “So it really depends entirely on the weather for us. In that way, we’re kind of like farmers ... totally dependent on the weather.â€? Diriwachter said he cannot recall a ski season at Gatlinburg that started so early and has been so consistent. The slopes at Ober have been running strong since Dec. 10, he said. All the recent snow actually serves as free advertising for Ober. “Because when it snows downtown, people are more aware that we are open for skiing, and that’s important,â€? said Diriwachter. Also, in past years visitors to Ober would wait until the last moment to make skiing reservations because they wanted to make sure there would be enough snow on the mountain to make the trip worthwhile. “This year, they’re booking ahead of time, which is a big advantage for us along with the all the hotels in Sevier County,â€? said Diriwachter.

GM set to halt Hummer production JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — General Motors Co. will halt Hummer production next week at its Louisiana plant until sale of the brand to a Chinese company is completed. Kevin Wale, president of GM’s China Group, said, meanwhile, he’s optimistic, but uncertain, the Hummer deal will be approved by Chinese government regulators. GM agreed last year to sell Hummer, once synonymous with America’s love for big off-road vehicles, to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corp. It had expected the deal to close early in 2010 after approval by U.S. and Chinese regulators. Assembly of Hummers at GM’s Shreveport, La., plant will be suspended Jan. 19 because there’s “sufficient inventory in the field to sustain dealers while the sale makes its way through the regulatory process,
Hummer spokesman Nick Richards said Wednesday. The approval delay is because Tengzhong is not an established manufacturer, something normally required by Chinese governments, Wale said after a speech Wednesday at the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit. “It’s not a recognized car manufacturer, and they have rules that require that people can’t just randomly go into key businesses, Wale said. “They have to get approval so that they don’t end up with too many suppliers, too many people trying to compete in each industry. It’s not a specific issue associated with Tengzhong or Hummer. It’s just a structural management of their economy. It was unclear how jobs would be affected at the plant in Shreveport, which also builds Chevrolet Colorado
and GMC Canyon pickup trucks, Richards said. “It hasn’t been determined what the impact will be right now, but Hummer production is under a quarter of production at the plant, Richards said. The Louisiana plant once employed about 3,000 people, but layoffs and buyouts have reduced that to about 1,120. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said the state will “aggressively pursue a variety of options to retain and grow jobs at the plant. “For the long-term, we know our best opportunity to preserve jobs at the facility is supporting the sale of the Hummer brand, a transaction that appears to be on track according to GM officials, as well as to attract additional automotive tenants to fully utilize the facility, he said in a statement.
Four U.S. troops killed in Afghan attacks KABUL (AP) — Four U.S. service members were killed Wednesday in separate attacks in Afghanistan, NATO said, underscoring the dangers facing Americans as President Barack Obama intensifies efforts to stabilize the country in its ninth year of war. The deaths raised to 14 the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to an Associated Press count. They also came on the same day the U.N. released a report showing the number of Afghan civilian deaths has been on the rise. One American service member was killed in fight-
ing with insurgents in eastern Afghanistan while the other died of wounds suffered in a roadside bombing in the south. NATO said the two other American troops died in a bomb blast Wednesday, but disclosed no other information. A French soldier was also killed and two others wounded in a roadside bomb attack Wednesday northeast of the Afghan capital of Kabul. President Nicolas Sarkozy’s office said the attack hit an armored vehicle the soldiers were riding in a convoy in the Mahmud-e-Raqi region between the NATO bases of Nijrab and Bagram.
The bombing came two days after insurgents ambushed a joint patrol of French and Afghan soldiers in the Alasay valley east of Kabul, killing a French captain and a sergeant. France has lost 39 troops in Afghanistan since 2001, including 11 last year. Obama has ordered 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan but said they would start to leave in 2011 depending on the readiness of Afghan forces, which also have been targeted by violence. Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, how-
ever, warned on Wednesday that Afghanistan is facing a major shortage of instructors needed to train Afghan forces and he called on other countries to step up their contributions. Levin, who spoke to reporters during a visit to Afghanistan, said the NATO coalition had only 37 percent of the trainers it needed to teach initial eight-week courses for Afghan recruits. “I was really surprised to see what a major shortfall we have in that area, Levin said. “We need a lot more of our coalition partners to step forward and to provide a lot more of those trainers.
Technology aims to replace animal testing WASHINGTON (AP) — Technology allowing cosmetic makers to test for allergic reactions to their products without controversial animal trials is in the works and could be in use by next year. on mice and guinea pigs used to predict skin reactions from drugs and cosmetics. The device uses laboratory-grown human skin cells to simulate the body’s allergic response to foreign chemicals. Preliminary experiments show promise, but rigorous tests are still needed to determine the technology’s accuracy.

The standard method for testing allergic reactions involves applying chemicals to the ears of mice, which are later killed and dissected for study. North Brunswick,
N.J.-based Hurel said Wednesday it hopes to eliminate the need for such tests, in an announcement with cosmetics giant L’Oreal, which provided funding for the test.

Corker, missionaries have Haiti tie CHATTANOOGA (AP) — Tennesseans who have worked as missionaries in Haiti, including Sen. Bob Corker, are organizing to help the poor island nation after it was devastated by an earthquake on Tuesday. Corker has said a mission trip to the country 25 years ago led him to public service. Corker’s office is offering assistance to affected Tennesseans and he has said he will make a personal contribution. Also on Wednesday, Nashville missionary Mike Wilson, who is adopting
a 5-year-old Haitian girl, was flying to the island to aid the orphanage where she lived, which was destroyed. Wilson and his wife Missy are the executive directors of Brent Gambrell ministries, which has organized mission trips to Haiti for the past eight years. Gloria Green, who sits on the nonprofit’s board of directors, said the Wilsons are in the process of adopting 5-year-old Santia Simon, whom they plan to call Tia. She was living at the New Life Link orphanage, just outside of
Port-au-Prince. Also living there was 21-year-old Katie Erie, a Middle Tennessee State University student whom the Wilsons have raised for several years and consider a daughter. She was working there as a volunteer. Erie was able to call the Wilsons on Wednesday morning. She told them she and the 50 orphans are safe. They have taken shelter in a nearby church but there is no food or water. Mike Wilson and nonprofit president and founder Brent Gambrell were traveling to Haiti to
try to aid the group and bring Erie and Tia back to the U.S. Green said the Wilsons were in Haiti last week to complete the adoption paperwork and are just waiting for Tia to be issued a passport. They are hoping to expedite that process. “They don’t want Tia to have to stay behind,” she said. Corker said Wednesday that there have been “21 Tennesseans who have contacted us already about loved ones.” He declined to provide names.

Kiffin shirts going to Haiti
A Knoxville apparel store owner is urging upset University of Tennessee fans not to burn their Lane Kiffin T-shirts, but to let him send them to Haiti. On Tuesday night, former Volunteer coach Kiffin angered fans and students by announcing he was leaving the Vols football program after coaching it for a single season and returning to Southern California as head coach. Dan Burks, who co-owns Hound Dogs, said he would give fans 20 percent off the purchase of a new shirt if they would bring in their “It’s Time” T-shirt. Burks said the store’s accountant just returned from a mission trip to Haiti and the company planned to send donated Kiffin T-shirts to survivors of the devastating earthquake there.

Nation/world quote roundup “They reported structures down. They reported a lot of walls down. They did see a number of bodies in the street and on the sidewalk that had been hit by debris. So clearly, there’s going to be serious loss of life in this.” — State Department spokesman P.J. Capitalism not to blame for trouble
When Judge Richard Posner, the prolific conservative intellectual, released his book “A Failure of Capitalism: The Crisis of ‘08 and the Descent Into Depression” (http://tinyurl.com/ ylnlbn2) last year, you might have thought the final verdict was in: Capitalism caused the economic downturn and high unemployment. That this verdict was pronounced by someone like Posner, who is associated with the University of Chicago and the free-market law and economics movement, gave moral support to all the politicians who were intent on exploiting the recession (as they exploit all crises) to increase government control of the economy. But what exactly is this “capitalism” that is blamed? The word “capitalism” is used in two contradictory ways. Sometimes it’s used to mean the free market, or laissez faire. Other times it’s used to mean today’s government-guided economy. Logically, “capitalism” can’t be both things. Either markets are free or government controls them. We can’t have it both ways. The truth is that we don’t have a free market -- government regulation and management are pervasive -- so it’s misleading to say that “capitalism” caused today’s problems. The free market is innocent. But it’s fair to say that crony capitalism created the economic mess. What is crony capitalism? It’s the economic system in which the marketplace is substantially shaped by a cozy relationship among government, big business and big labor. Under crony capitalism, government bestows a variety of privileges that are simply unattainable in the free market, including import restrictions, bailouts, subsidies and loan guarantees. Crony capitalism is as old as the republic itself. Congress’ first act in 1789 — on July 4, no less! — was a tariff on foreign goods to protect influential domestic business interests. We don’t have to look far to see how crony-dominated American capitalism is today. The politically connected tire and steel industries get government relief from a “surge” of imports from China. Who cares if American consumers want to pay less for Chinese steel and tires?) Crony capitalism, better know as government bailouts, saved General Motors and Chrysler from extinction, with Barack Obama cronies the United Auto Workers getting preferential treatment over other creditors and generous stock holdings (especially outrageous considering that the union helped bankrupt the companies in the first place with fat pensions and wasteful work rules). Banks and insurance companies (like AIG) are bailed out because they are deemed too big to fail. Favored farmers get crop subsidies. If free-market capitalism is a private profitand-loss system, crony capitalism is a privateprofit and public-loss system. Companies keep their profits when they succeed but use government to stick the taxpayer with the losses when they fail. Nice work if you can get it. The role that regulation plays in crony capitalism is unappreciated. Critics of business assume that regulation is how government tames corporations. But historically, regulation has been how one set of businesses (usually bigger, well-connected ones) gains advantages over others. Timothy Carney’s book about this, “The Big Ripoff: How Big Business and Big Government Steal Your Money” (http://tinyurl. com/ycysmhl), explains why Phillip Morris joined the “war on tobacco,” General Motors pushed for clean-air legislation and Archer Daniels Midland likes ethanol subsidies. As economist Bruce Yandle writes, “(I) ndustry support of regulation is not rare at all; indeed, it is the norm” (http://tinyurl.com/ ybgjmwl). If you wonder why, ask yourself: Which are more likely to be hampered by vigorous regulatory standards: entrenched corporations with their overstaffed legal and accounting departments or small startups trying to get off the ground? Regulation can kill competition -- and incumbents like it that way. When will Michael Moore figure this out? His last movie attacked what he calls capitalism, but his own work shows that it’s not the free market that causes the ills he abhors. Had he called the movie “Crony Capitalism: A Love Story,” he would have been on firmer ground (http://tinyurl.com/yf5kwq5). It’s time we acknowledged the difference between the free market, which is based on freedom and competition, and crony capitalism, which is based on privilege. Adam Smith knew the difference — and chose the free-market. What’s taking us so long? — John Stossel hosts a show on the Fox Business Channel and is the author of “Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel — Why Everything You Know is Wrong.” (C)2009 JFS Productions Inc.

Lane violation
In condemning Kiffin, keep in mind that college football is, first, a business Two things are evident in assessing the Lane Kiffin situation. First, contracts — at least those between institutions and coaches — are no more legally binding than a handshake. And two, college football is big business where loyalty and commitment are asked of the players, but unimportant to the head coach. There are lots of angry, hurt, disappointed people on the campus of the University of Tennessee today, just as there are at Southern Cal, Texas Tech and other universities where coaches have left. There is a symbiotic relationship between a big-time college football community and its head coach. You can admire and respect a favorite professor, but the coach … well, that’s different. Lane Kiffin didn’t exactly blaze through his schedule this past season, but he was young, enthusiastic, full of bravado and brashness. The team showed promise. He was building. He seemed dedicated and committed.
What he lacked was an understanding of the culture of southern football, especially Southeastern Conference football. He never seemed comfortable as an SEC coach, and his unfortunate comments early in his tenure didn’t help. His support, while wide, seemed shallow. He just didn’t quite appear to fit in, which would have been fine if he had stayed because he’d have changed and adapted. As long as he won, his flaws would have been overlooked. It would be wrong and unfair to accuse Kiffin of using Tennessee as a bridge to a better job. Everybody, whether in coaching or not, is looking for another job, a better job, more money, more control. Most coaches, amateur and pro, overstay their welcome and get run off or forced out. There are no more Bear Bryants and Joe Paternos, who stay for years and years and retire on their own terms. It’s too difficult getting dug in,
because one bad season can send you packing these days. Those students protesting Kiffin’s actions Tuesday night on campus were taking this personally. It’s not personal, as Michael Corleone insisted to his brother Sonny before heading to the restaurant to kill the crooked cop and Mafia foe; it’s strictly business. Of course when Ed Orgeron, whom Kiffin is taking with him, calls Tennessee recruits and urges them not to enroll at UT this spring, that’s going too far. It’s probably an NCAA violation. Let’s hope that gets some scrutiny. Kiffin is Public Enemy No. 1 to Tennessee fans and players, but they’ll get over it as a new coach is hired, staff put in place and recruits are pacified. This is a good job in the college football world, and good coaches are out there ready to come to Knoxville. Meanwhile, there is no harm in wishing Lane Kiffin nothing but misery and failure at USC. That’s just football, right?
Political view
Public forum Recognizing valued employees should be a must for businesses
Editor: Employee recognition: So little while so much. The year 2009 was a difficult year for tourist areas throughout the country. Businesses throughout Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Sevier County struggled, many unable to award bonuses to their hard-working staff. Understandably, many businesses can’t afford such lavish a gift as the Feed/Hedrick
group. Nonetheless, it is important area businesses and city officials recognize the diligent efforts made by dedicated employees. In this day and time social media is king. It can wreak havoc on businesses when the slightest failure in customer service surfaces. Employees do work for their check; many in Sevier County live week to week. But when an employee does more than what is asked, comes up with an idea that boosts business, or tames an unruly guest, they deserve positive recognition. A compliment or other form of internal
recognition goes a long way in keeping the custodians of your business reputation afloat. When is the last time you called a meeting to praise outstanding efforts made by an employee, arranged a show or dinner that may not have cost you the actual monetary value, or used your stage to publicly praise employees for their above-board services? The magic some of these and other gestures performs is priceless. Employee appreciation goes a long way in any economy. Charles Rhodes Seymour

PREP HOOPS
PF’s Lady Tigers on top of District 3-AA pack By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer
they’re already making plenty of money broadcasting — working far less hours than would be necessary to give the Tennessee job the attention needed. Like Mr. Layman, I think Tennessee best opportunity for a home run hire is from the coordinator ranks. While unlikely, many people are speculating Tennessee will go after Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Muschamp would be a huge hire, but the possibility he’d jump ship for the Georgia or Texas job in the future would be huge, too. I for one, will try to keep my emotions in check when the coaching hire is announced. As I’ve learned from this debacle, it’s going to take some time to decide if the hire is great or a dud. Kiffin brought in a great recruiting class, won seven games and left us in a situation no better than we were in before and perhaps worse. The next coach could be a Bruce Pearl-like find, a diamond in the rough, or another disaster. Only time will tell.
MAYNARDVILLE — The Pigeon Forge Lady Tigers proved they are still the team to beat in District 3-AA this season Tuesady night. The Orange-and-Black ladies traveled to Union County and posted a convincing 63-44 road win on Tuesday night over the Lady Patriots. “We’re the only undefeated team in the district right now,” said Pigeon Forge coach Paul Reagan. “It hasn’t been an easy path to get to where we are, but we’ve got to keep the peddle to the medal and keep grinding. But right now, I’m elated to be 10-1. “One thing about our girls for sure is that nobody is going to outplay them as far as effort.” The Lady Tigers (10-1, 5-0) had things well in control by halftime on Tuesday, entering the locker rooms holding a 39-13 lead over Union (5-9, 0-3). Pigeon Forge junior Ashlynn Trotter led all scorers with 18 points in what was her best performance so far this season. “Ashlynn Trotter played very well,” said Reagan. “It was great to see her shooting so well, and when she’s on, she really helps us as a team. She is a big key to our success.” Pigeon Forge junior Kelsey Brooks added 13 points and junior Kesha Hooker had 10 in the winning effort. Lady Tigers freshman Cassidy Martin and senior Emily Hurst also scored seven points apiece, senior Danielle Rauhuff had five, sophomore Brittany Wood had two and freshman Mindy Brackins had a charity shot on Tuesday night. Pigeon Forge next hosts former Appalachian Conference foe Grainger Lady Grizzlies (8-6) tonight before returning to District 3-AA play on Friday night, also at home against the Fulton Lady Falcons (6-4, 3-1). Although the Lady Tigers are undefeated in district play so far this campaign, they still have one team remaining to defeat this season. That chance will come soon enough, however. “We haven’t had the opportunity to play Fulton yet,” said Reagan. “But we get that chance on Friday.” District 3-AA play continues next week with tough road games at Austin-East (4-5, 3-2) on Tuesday night and GatlinburgPittman (7-5, 1-2) on Friday night. “After this next stretch, we’ll see where we really are,” said Reagan. “We’ve got a few really tough games coming in the next few days.”

Tennessee coaching defectors Lane Kiffin, Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron argue with the head linesman during the Volunteers’ matchup with UCLA at Neyland Stadium last season. The three coaches will be on the sidelines coaching for the University of Southern California in 2010 after Lane Kiffin took the head coaching job there Tuesday night.
Kiffin’s departure a punch in the gut for Volunteer football fans Tennessee fans and students showed former coach Lane Kiffin just how passionate they are about their Volunteers Tuesday night, as they sent the USC-bound coach out like a villain, chased by profanities and a burning mattress. A lifelong Vol fan, I’m upset — just not angry enough to torch innocent household items. Jason Layman, Sevier County’s resident former-NFLer and UT captain, put it best. “I think most rational people would have expected as much from him,” the former Tennessee Titan lineman said to me by e-mail. “Tennessee was just a pit stop on his road back to the West Coast, whether that stop lasted 12 months or five years was anyone’s guess.” Despite Layman’s logical point, it’s obvious the three-year Vol starter and All-SEC performer didn’t fall in love with the Vols’ short-time coach. “I did not think the Lane Kiffin hire was a good fit for UT from the beginning,” he said. “I voiced as much many times with my colleagues at work. In today’s environment of $4-5 million-ayear head coaches, loyalty or the perception of loyalty through longevity is a thing of the past. “I say goodbye, good riddance and I hope we get to beat you down in a bowl game soon.” Jason, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
“I say goodbye, good riddance and I hope we get to beat you down in a bowl game soon.” Jason Layman, Sevier County resident, former Volunteer football captain and four-year NFL veteran
For the past year I’ve had to defend Kiffin’s every comment to a room full of rival SEC fans here at The Mountain Press. From Kiffin’s accusation of Urban Meyer cheating to his alleged “gas-pumping” quote to South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffrey, time and again the coach has had Vol fans scratching their heads about whether or not to embrace the new resident firebrand I admit, that during his tenure while others were calling him a “clown,” I was strictly in the “he’s our clown” camp. Now, thank the football gods, he’s somebody else’s Bozo. The biggest problem is the fact that he’ll likely take the best part of the 2010 Tennessee recruiting class with him. Sevierville Vol fan Travis Bradley called that “unethical and classless” behavior — citing the reports that coach Ed Orgeron told mid-term enrollees not to go to class, but to transfer to Southern Cal. There is hope, however, that athletic director Mike Hamilton might make a home run hire that will somehow save the class and bring back some class to the University.
Layman said integrity should be top priority for the next coach. “I hope Mike Hamilton’s next hire is a man of integrity with a calm head and respectful manner, not a petulant child with little experience and even less professionalism,” Layman said. As for choices, Layman said he’d prefer UT not poach somebody else’s head coach, instead either promoting from within or hiring an up-and-coming coordinator from another school. Kippy Brown, UT’s new wide receivers coach, got an endorsement from the lineman as well. “(He) is a Tennessee man, born and raised and played college football in Memphis. I think Tennessee could do far worse.” I think Brown could be a reasonable choice, should the search go past the big name candidates that are currently being bandied about. Several of those guys, however, are absolute pipe dreams. Jon Gruden? No way. Tony Dungy? You’re kidding, right? NFL guys, especially former Super Bowl winning coaches, aren’t going to touch this job. They’ve got better things to do than beg 17-year-olds to come play football for them. And
Tigers give poor effort in 87-61 loss to Union By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer MAYNARDVILLE — The Pigeon Forge Tigers boys’ basketball squad put on an uncommon display of effort and execution Tuesday night at District 3-AA rival Union Patriots. The normally feisty Orange-and-Black squad were unfocussed and outhustled in a disappointing 87-61 Patriots victory, just the third time a team has scored 80 points on the Tigers in three seasons.
“I was very disappointed,” said Pigeon Forge coach Jonathan Shultz. “I was embarrassed by our lack of effort and lack of defensive execution. “We gave (Union) too many points off turnovers. (The Patriots) are a good team, and they played well and shot the ball well. But this was the first time this year I feel we didn’t show up and play with the kind of effort and intensity I’m accustomed to, and this is only the third time I’ve given up 80 points as a coach.”
Although Shultz said there is no excuse for what he saw from his team on Tuesday night, there are factors that contributed to the poor performance. “Being out of school, missing so many days and not being in a routine had something to do with it,” said Shultz. “But we also didn’t prepare ourselves mentally, and that’s my job. “I hope there won’t be too many more of those (80-point games against us). It’s not going to be due to a lack of effort in
practice if there is. We’re going back to the basics, and if I see lack of effort, someone else will be playing in that place.” Shultz said he feels confident his group will respond the right way tonight against visiting Grainger Grizzlies, however. “I think we’ll come out ready to play,” said the coach. “This is a high character group, a group of guys that were disappointed about how they played on Tuesday night. “They don’t point fin-
gers. They look in the mirror. This group is not going to blame anybody, and I expect them to respond (tonight).” Senior Ben Cave led Pigeon Forge on Tuesday night with 19 points, senior Justin Carter had 16, Caleb Ownby seven, Ryan Crowe five, Aaron Justus and Wil Crowe had four apiece and Curtis Jordan and Justin Kilgore had three points each in the losing effort. chitchcock@themountainpress.com

Dear Annie: I am one of four sisters, all of us in our 50s. We are a closeknit family, although we no longer live in the same communities. My niece, “Tara,” gave birth to a son while she was still in high school. A wonderful couple adopted the boy, and because the adoption was open, they have stayed in contact. The baby had some health issues, which they initially attributed to the lack of prenatal care. Two years later, Tara gave birth to her second out-of-wedlock son just as her first was diagnosed with Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy. There is no history of this in the family, and my niece was deemed a spontaneous carrier. Her second child has it, too. When these two were diagnosed, the doctors explained that, barring a miracle, her sons would face an increasingly painful life and an early death. They also told her she could pass along the disease to future children. Tara didn’t care. Five years ago, she met a divorced man with three boys, and they have since had three more children together. Blessedly, two of the children are girls and will not develop the disease, although they could be carriers. The third child is a boy who, astoundingly, is healthy. But she plans to have more children. No one can get through to Tara that she is playing genetic Russian roulette with her children’s lives. These are children, by the way, whom neither she nor her partner can afford, and we have no idea how she plans to care for a child who might become disabled. How do we continue to love and support her when we are all so upset with the situa-
tion? -- Heartsick in the Heartland Dear Heartsick: You sigh deeply and say nothing. Tara is a grown woman, and these are her choices, smart or not. Be a kind and loving great-aunt to these children, and try to keep your opinions out of it. That’s as supportive as you need to be. Dear Annie: My 20-year-old daughter is fantastic. She’s smart, funny, compassionate, involved and has a beautiful, warm, friendly face. Her problem is that although she works out, she is short and a little heavy. And she doesn’t
know how to dress to “accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.” I want to help her, but am afraid of hurting her feelings and don’t know enough about the details of fashion to teach her. Also, she probably would not take my advice on this topic. Is there a book I could give her? Should I ask her mother to deliver the message? -- Loving Dad Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
