Tobacco banned at new hospital By ELLEN BROWN Staff Writer Knoxville-areahospitalsannounced Wednesday that they would become tobacco-free workplaces by January 2011, but Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center will be completely tobaccofree when its new campus opens next month. “We started talking about it with our employees 18 months ago,” Ellen Wilhoit, president and chief administrator, said Wednesday. “We’ve had quarterly meetings and offered smoking cessation programs. There are so many hospitals across the state, across the nation, with tobacco-free campuses. Some have been that way since 2002, so it’s not really new — although it’s new to us.”
the University of Tennessee Medical Center said their campuses would ban tobacco use by workers in an effort to encourage healthier lifestyles for the entire community. The policy applies to all of the hospitals throughout East Tennessee operated by the five health systems, but each hospital got to decide when to implement a total tobacco ban to include visitors and patients. “The Knoxville area hospitals are working together on this initiative — Ellen Wilhoit, president and chief administrator, Fort Sanders Sevier because the evidence is compelling Medical Center and the message is clear: A tobacco-free workplace promotes better Executives of Blount Memorial health, and better health is the shared Hospital, Covenant Health (owner of goal of every hospital in the area,” Fort Sanders Sevier and Fort Sanders Anthony Spezia, president and CEO Regional), East Tennessee Children’s See hospital, Page A4 Hospital, Mercy Health Partners and

PIGEON FORGE — City planning officials have removed the final hurdle to a proposal for a new movie theater at Waldens Landing development, as they approved a parking requirement variance. Meeting as the Board of Zoning Appeals, the group approved a deal that developer Ned Vickers said should maintain an “aggressive 180day construction schedule” for the theater. That could mean the county gets its first new theater in a long time, despite promises over the years from several developers that they would be building movie houses in various areas. The request Vickers put before the board was for a variance on the city’s requirement for parking spaces. Constructing a theater requires at least 108 slots be reserved, a threshold Vickers said Waldens Landing more than fulfills. In fact, there are more than 130 spaces available for the development, thanks to a lease agreement with the nearby Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson, which allows the use of 81 spaces behind its facility on Waldens Main Street. Vickers is asking to use 58 of those to meet the theater parking requirement. The issue the board had to address Tuesday, and which the City Commission already See planners, Page A4

Rezoning request decision delayed
state/nation briefs Tennessee braces for storm
MEMPHIS (AP) — Weather forecasters are trying to decide what kind of precipitation will fall in Tennessee from an approaching storm. A winter weather watch was posted for all of West Tennessee by noon Wednesday and the National Weather Service said a significant winter storm was possible across the region. Later watches were anticipated for sections of the state farther east. Forecasters said moisture will spread into the lower Mississippi Valley on Thursday and would meet Arctic air dropping into the state. It appeared Wednesday that most frozen precipitation would begin Thursday night and last into early Saturday. It would occur as rain changed over to freezing rain, sleet and snow. It wasn’t clear how much of what would fall where.
Toyota halts U.S. sales of Camry
WASHINGTON (AP) — Toyota suspended U.S. sales of some of its most popular vehicles — including the best-selling car in America, the Camry — to fix sticking gas pedals that could make the cars accelerate without warning. In another blow to the world’s No. 1 automaker, Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it would halt some production at six assembly plants beginning the week of Feb. 1 “to assess and coordinate activities. The company said it would stop selling eight models of cars and trucks, a significant portion of its fleet. The suspension comes after a recall of the same models last week involving 2.3 million vehicles.
Conservative ties bind phone suspects
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Four men accused of trying to tamper with Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office phones shared a common experience as young ideologues writing for conservative publications. Federal authorities said two of the men posed as telephone workers with hard hats, tool belts and fluorescent vests and walked into Landrieu’s office in a New Orleans federal building Monday. The others are accused of helping to organize the plan. The most well-known suspect is James O’Keefe, 25, who posed as a pimp for a hidden-camera expose that damaged the reputation of the liberal community-organizing group ACORN and made him a conservative darling.
Teen firefighters’ die in pond
Debate becomes heated on Monday By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer PIGEON FORGE — Discussions of a rezoning request that sailed quietly through the Planning Commission and the City Commission’s first vote on it suddenly became so heated during Monday’s City Commission meeting that a decision was postponed to give time for a work session. The petition seeks to have land owned by Cindy Ogle and Credit Shelter Trust on Ogle Drive next to Mill Creek moved from R-1 (lowdensity residential) to C-2 (tourist commercial), apparently for an RV park. Neighbors worry the change would alter the feel of their community. City leaders seemed somewhat blindsided by the at-times heated debate. Audience members fired comments between the opposing sides, who were on opposite sides of the room. Mayor Keith Whaley attempted to control the situation, but conceded the public hearing held prior to the regular meeting had taken
N. Korea, S. Korea exchange fire
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired artillery rounds toward its disputed sea border with South Korea on Wednesday, prompting a barrage of warning shots from the South’s military and raising tensions on the divided peninsula. No casualties or damage were reported, and analysts said the volley — which the North announced was part of a military drill — was likely a move by Pyongyang to highlight the need for a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War.
Elizabeth, John Edwards separate
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Elizabeth Edwards has separated from her husband, two-time presidential candidate John Edwards, after a tumultuous three years in which the couple’s marital troubles became tabloid fodder. Andrea Purse, a friend of Elizabeth Edwards, confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday that the 60-year-old mother of four has separated from her husband. North Carolina law requires couples to be separated for a year before divorcing.

PETA proposes robotic groundhog
PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — An animal rights group wants organizers of Pennsylvania’s Groundhog Day festival to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robotic stand-in. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it’s unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, a tiny borough about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. neighborhood. “I love the tourists. I make my living off them, neighbor Dee Gallon said. “I just don’t want to live with them. Still, property owner Suzy Campbell insisted Ogle Drive could handle the traffic, pointing out there’s already plenty generated by a cabin development above the land in question. “This land has been in my family forever, but right now it’s just an expense to me, Campbell said. “It’s just sitting there and I can’t do anything with it. A few years ago I asked that I be allowed to pasture my horses out there, but (the city) wouldn’t allow that. Campbell pointed out the entire area will likely go commercial if and when the city builds its planned west-side connector. Until then, though, she said her plans would have no negative impact on the area. “I live up there. My grandmother lives up there. ZELIENOPLE, Pa. (AP) — Two young volunteer firefighters for a western Pennsylvania town and another teenager are dead after their SUV went off the road and plunged into a pond. Police in Zelienople say the three teens were reported missing Tuesday night. Their bodies were recovered Wednesday morning. Police Chief Jim Miller says two were members of the volunteer organization. Flags have been lowered to half-staff and two black wreaths hung at the firehouse. Fire Capt. Tyler Murray the department has a drill Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. but doesn’t know whether the teens were on their way there. over the commissioners’ debate. “I think our public comment period has overflowed, he joked. Neighbors of the property worried about what the zoning change could mean, pointing out the C-2 district allows everything from theaters to go-cart tracks. “You say this would allow everything that’s on the Parkway, that it could make us just like the Parkway, neighbor Wilburn Malugen said. “We don’t want the things that are on the Parkway in our neighborhood. We don’t want the noise. That’s why we moved out there. Denny Clabo pointed out the issue of rezoning the property had come up several years ago and, though approved by the Planning Commission then, was eventually denied by the City Commission after neighbors protested. “I spoke out against it then and I’m still against it now, Clabo said. “The road will not handle meeting two campers side by side. The lender, he explained, is onboard with the plan, but doesn’t want to be forced to continue the parking lease if, as city attorney Jim Gass put it, “a cataclysmic event like foreclosure should happen. “If they have to come in and terminate the loan for some reason, they’re not going to continue the lease, of Covenant Health, said in prepared remarks. “This is a great step forward on behalf of all the health care professionals in our area. Each of the five hospital systems will implement its own individual set of policies related to tobacco usage, but the shared component is that no employee will be allowed to use tobacco products while on campus, starting next year. Fort Sanders Sevier’s policy is that no one on campus — employee, patient or visitor — can use tobacco products once the new LeConte Medical Center campus opens across the street in February. “We have signs posted on the doors of every entrance, Wilhoit said. “If security sees anyone smoking, they’ll ask them politely (to stop smoking or leave the campus). Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga has announced
that as of Feb. 1, it would no longer hire anyone who smokes or chews tobacco. Current or prospective employees of Fort Sanders Sevier won’t have to give up their habit, however — at least not while they’re away from the hospital campus. “We do have employees who smoke, but they do it before work and after they go home, Wilhoit said. “We will continue to hire people who smoke and use tobacco. Employees who do stop smoking receive a discount on their insurance premiums, she added. “We are about health improvement, and we have to be good role models, Wilhoit said. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Tennessee has the sixth highest percentage of smokers and the 14th highest percentage of smokeless tobacco users.

By JENNIFER LOVEN Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON — Hoping to rescue his prized health care overhaul and revive his presidency as well, Barack Obama appealed in his State of the Union address for support for the plan that is in severe danger in Congress, urging dispirited Democrats not to abandon the effort. “By the time I’m finished speaking tonight, more Americans will have lost their health insurance, Obama said, according to excerpts of the Wednesday night address released in advance by the White House. “Patients will be denied the care they need. Small business owners will continue to drop coverage altogether. I will not walk away from these Americans. And neither should the people in this chamber. Promising to tackle the economic worries foremost on Americans’ minds and become the transformative leader they thought they voted for, Obama called on Democrats and Republicans to “overcome the numbing weight of our politics and agree on solutions to the nation’s problems. “We face a deficit of trust — deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years, he said. Obama was looking to change the conversation from how his presidency is stalling — over the messy health care debate, a limping economy and the missteps that led to Christmas Day’s barely averted terrorist disaster — to how he is seizing the reins. In his speech, the president is devoting about two-thirds of his time to the economy, emphasizing his ideas, some new but mostly old and explained anew, for restoring job growth, taming budget deficits and changing Washington’s ways. These concerns are at the roots of voter emotions that drove supporters to Obama but now are turning on him as he governs. Indicating he understands Americans’ struggles to pay bills

Alabama landfill owner goes bankrupt despite TVA ash deal UNIONTOWN, Ala. (AP) — The owners of a west Alabama landfill have filed for bankruptcy protection despite a multimillion-dollar contract to accept tons of coal ash spilled in an environmental accident at a Tennessee Valley Authority power plant. The bankruptcy petition was filed Tuesday in Mobile by Perry Uniontown Ventures LLC and Perry County Associates. The companies own the land and permits for the Arrowhead Landfill, which has accepted tons of coal ash spilled at a Tennessee power plant in 2008. According to court documents, landfill operators Phillips and Jordan Inc. and Phill-Con Services have a multimilliondollar contract with TVA to accept coal ash from Kingston, Tenn., site of the spill. But the owners of the landfill accuse the companies operating it of withholding money from them. The landfill owners claim the late payments forced them into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Also, Perry County has yet to receive almost $780,000 in dumping fees even though the landfill operators have received millions of dollars from TVA, according to court documents. Stuart Davis, an executive with Phill-Con Services, declined comment Wednesday on the bankruptcy petition. Jeffery J. Hartley, attorney for the landfill owners, said they had no choice but to petition
for Chapter 11 protection because the operators have refused to pay them. Hartley, in a statement, said the operation of the landfill would not be affected while the business dispute is sorted out. “The Arrowhead Landfill has all of the elements necessary to pay its obligations, to be profitable and to ensure the safe disposal of coal ash from the Kingston Plant ..., Hartley said. “The facility will continue to operate safely and with the extraordinary standard of excellence established throughout the facility’s life. The landfill is the subject of lawsuits being prepared by Florida-based environmental lawyer David A. Ludder on behalf of about 150 Perry County residents. The bankruptcy filing delayed the filing of the suits, Ludder said. “With bankruptcy comes an automatic stay against new litigation against the bankrupt party, Ludder said. “So the residents will not be able to file a lawsuit against the two bankrupt parties until their bankruptcy is resolved.

President Barack Obama walks along the West Wing Colonnade toward the Oval Office of the White House in Washington on Wednesday ahead of his State of the Union address. while big banks get bailouts and bonuses, Obama is prodding Congress to enact a second stimulus package and to provide new financial relief for the middle class. Acknowledging frustration at the government’s habit of spending more than it has, he is seeking a three-year freeze on some domestic spending (while proposing a 6.2 percent, or $4 billion, increase in the popular arena of education and supporting the debt-financed jobs bill) and is announcing he is creating a bipartisan deficit-reduction task force. “Let’s try common sense, Obama said in the speech excerpts. “Let’s invest in our people without leaving them a mountain of debt. Positioning himself as a fighter for the regular guy and a different kind of leader, he urged Congress to require lobbyists to disclose all contacts with lawmakers or members of his
administration and to blunt the impact of last week’s Supreme Court decision allowing corporations greater flexibility in supporting or opposing candidates. “I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, and worse, by foreign entities, he said. Even before Obama spoke, some of the new proposals, many revealed by the White House in advance, were being dismissed — on the right or the left — as poorly targeted or too modest to make a difference. response, Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia showed no sign of his party capitulating to Obama. In fact, the choice of McDonnell to represent Republicans was symbolic, meant to showcase recent GOP election victories by him and others. McDonnell reflected the anti-big government sentiment that helped lead to their wins, saying in excerpts from his own post-speech remarks that Americans want good health care they can afford, just not by turning over “the best medical care system in the world to the federal government.

Ethics rules would exclude media reports NASHVILLE (AP) — Members of a legislative panel working to set up new House ethics rules agreed Wednesday that they don’t want complaints to be filed based on media reports. The proposed rules that advanced to a full floor vote would require at least one independent source other than “newspaper or other media” reports. “I would not want it based on media accounts,” said Rep. Ulysses Jones, D-Memphis and chairman of the House Ethics Committee. “I want to
make sure of that, because otherwise you’ll be having a hearing just about every week.” House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower of Bristol argued that a proposed requirement for a person to have some personal knowledge of alleged ethics violations before filing a complaint would make it more difficult to file legitimate complaints. He cited as an example the 2007 drunken driving arrest of then-House Judiciary Chairman Rob Briley after police said he took them on a 100-mph

chase. That case was covered closely in the media, but Mumpower argued that if an ethics violation “can’t be based from what you saw on TV, then in that case no complaint could be filed.” No ethics complaint was filed in that case, and Briley didn’t seek re-election in 2008. But Democrats on the panel said they want to prevent frivolous complaints based on unreliable information or a personal vendetta between lawmakers. They cited former Rep.

commentary
Free speech not hurt by court ruling From the commentary in the mainstream media, I thought there had been a coup d’etat in Washington. The New York Times said what happened “strikes at the heart of democracy” (http:// tinyurl.com/yzhdsc5). The Washington Post quoted an authority who warned it “threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions across the nation” (http://tinyurl. com/y9khl7j). No, not the Scott Brown victory. The media were upset because the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that forbidding corporations and labor unions to spend money on political speech before elections is unconstitutional. A horrendous section of the abomination known as McCain-Feingold campaignfinance “reform” had bitten the dust. It was long overdue. The case grew out of a documentary critical of Hillary Clinton that Citizens United (http://www.citizensunited.org/), a nonprofit corporation, planned to show on cable television during the 2008 presidential primary season. The law said that was illegal. The 5-4 majority consisted of the four conservative justices and the swing justice, Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the main opinion. He couldn’t have been more clear: “When Government seeks to use its full power, including the criminal law, to command where a person may get his or her information or what distrusted source he or she may not hear, it uses censorship to control thought. This is unlawful. ... The First Amendment confirms the freedom to think for ourselves.” He also said, “Because speech is an essential mechanism of democracy -- it is the means to hold officials accountable to the people — political speech must prevail against laws that would suppress it.” And, “We find no basis for the proposition that, in the context of political speech, the Government may impose restrictions on certain disfavored speakers.” Of course, the “progressive media” condemned the majority for its judicial activism because the ruling overturned two precedents. I thought progressives favored judicial activism and dumping bad precedents. I also thought they favored free speech. Wrong. (To its credit, the ACLU was on Citizen United’s side.) It depends on whose ox is gored. In condemning the decision, the offended progressives engaged in amazing mental contortions. It “was wrong because nothing in the First Amendment dictates that corporations must be treated identically to people,” the Post editorialist wrote. The media outrage is almost funny. Under McCain-Feingold, media corporations were exempt from the prohibition — which suits the Washington Post and New York Times just fine. But people with common sense already knew what Justice Kennedy found it necessary to say: “This differential treatment (between media and nonmedia corporations) cannot be squared with the First Amendment.” So now we are being served dire warnings that “corporate money ... may now overwhelm both the contributions of individuals and the faith they may harbor in their democracy.” (Are similarly freed wealthy labor unions potted plants?) But the same Post editorial conceded that corporate money was “never lacking in the American political process.” So what’s the difference? One need not be a fan of big corporations — which in today’s interventionist economy benefit from many government privileges — to see that restrictions on anyone’s speech are dangerous. A government lawyer last year said that even corporatefunded books favoring or opposing candidates could be prohibited under McCainFeingold. That should scare progressives — especially since the Federal Election Commission once had an anti-Bush book written by George Soros under scrutiny (http://tinyurl.com/yb5ps3l). It is shameful that progressives are willing to throw free speech under the bus in their devotion to big government. There is a simple way to get corporate money out of politics: get the government out of our lives and economic affairs. If government has no favors to sell, no one will spend money trying to win them. — John Stossel hosts a show on the Fox Business Channel and is the author of “Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel — Why Everything You Know is Wrong.” (C)2009 JFS Productions Inc.

The best of the best School system’s top teachers deserve thanks, admiration It is, in so many ways, a thankless job. We ask a lot of school teachers. We want them to teach our children even when those kids are sleepy, distracted and not interested in what’s being taught. We expect teachers to be disciplinarians, apolitical, without overt religious conviction, able to handle excessive paperwork, negotiate the minefield of parental involvement, prepare lessons after school or at home, counsel, console, advise and encourage, and do all this while maintaining their own personal lives. When the good teachers come along, the really good ones, we treasure them. Who among us can’t look back to our school days and remember with fondness those special teachers who reached us and motivated us, whose classes were a treat as well as informative?
Yes, we ask a lot of teachers, many of whom spend more time with children than the children’s own parents. So when we find the extraordinary ones, we need to honor them in some way. Each year a panel of professional educators evaluates teachers selected as the best at their schools, to chose the system’s top three teachers at three levels: grades 9-12, grades 5-8 and pre-K through fourth grade, This year’s winners: n Secondary teacher (grades 9-12): Karen Kelley, Pigeon Forge High n Middle grades teacher (5-8): Debbie West, Seymour Middle n Primary grades teacher (pre-K-4): Cheryl Deaton, Pigeon Forge Primary These are the ones the panel judged the best of the best. They deserve congratulations.
While the Sevier County school system has many fine teachers, these three were named the best ones for this year. They will represent the school system at the district and even state level. Who knows, we may end up having the best teacher in all of Tennessee right here in our midst. Our top teachers will be recognized later this year during a banquet sponsored by Sevier County Bank. The bank has been a loyal supporter of the school system for much of its 100 years and annually sponsors the teacher banquet. To all the individual schools’ teachers of the year, we offer praise and thanks for the work you do to help our children learn and mature. And a special thanks to the three overall winners, whose devotion to what truly is a calling is an inspiration.

Public forum Officials working hard to bring veterans health clinic to county
Editor: Recently, there has been discussion regarding Sevier County and the possibility of a veterans health care facility being located here. Unfortunately, within that discussion there has also been misinformation regarding local governments’ attempts to have such a facility. Having been involved in the effort to bring a VA facility here, I’d like to set the record straight. Along with Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters, I have contacted the Veterans Administration (VA) headquarters and asked about the possibility of a VA hospital in our county. The response from the VA was no. Among the factors cited for that answer were that they have no plans to open any inpatient facility in Tennessee, and an existing facility
in Johnson City that the VA considers close by. However, we were informed by the VA that Sevier County was on a list to get a clinic. Sevier County has been on that list for approximately three years. There are reasons we are still on that list, instead of seeing such a clinic already built and opened. The first reason is that the economic downturn changed priorities at the VA. Operating costs for such a clinic are substantial, and currently the VA is underfunded and shorthanded. Money that could be used to operate a clinic is instead being used to help with the backlog of cases. Another reason are the strict guidelines the VA has in regards to their facilities. They are very particular and have higher standards, in some cases higher than other medical facilities. The VA has looked at several sites in Sevier County, but deemed none of them acceptable.
When the plans for the current hospital being vacated were being formulated, Sevier County contacted the VA to ask if that current hospital facility would be sufficient for a clinic. The VA sent representatives to tour the facility. While they seemed pleased with the site during their visit, we have not received a response regarding their evaluation. I am a veteran. I want the veterans in Sevier County to have access to the best health care available. Sevier County is not standing idly by. We have been proactive in trying to serve our veterans. But the decision is not ours alone. Hopefully in the future, the VA and near Sevier County will have good news for our men and women who have served so admirably for us. Hungry Tigers take down Union Pigeon Forge picks up first District 3-AA win of year By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer PIGEON FORGE — How does an underdog end up winning even after shooting just 6-of-14 for the night from the charity stripe? Don’t ask the Pigeon Forge Tigers (8-11, 1-7) boys’ basketball team, even though they did precisely that Tuesday night, earning their first District 3-AA win of the season with a 59-57 OT triumph of the visiting Union Patriots (12-11, 2-6). “I don’t know how we did it,” said Tigers coach Jonathan Shultz. “I guess I was on the sideline praying a lot.” But if not for the poor Pigeon Forge free throw shooting — including a 2-of-6 stretch in the final two minutes of regulation and OT combined — a period of free basketball would have never been necessary to win against the Pats. “But somehow we found a way to win it. Tonight we had the heart to pull it out, and we needed this. We needed a district win. This is the same (Union) team that beat us by 26 at their place, so we’re happy to get the win.” Cobey Hitchcock/The Mountain Press Some clutch shots throughout the game by sophomore Pigeon Forge senior Justin Carter (24), left, would not be denied inside penetration Tuesday night Andy Barnett — who finished with a trifecta of treys — and against visiting District 3-AA rival Union Patriots. The Tigers won their first district game of the season 59-57 in overtime on Justin Carter’s layup with just 2.3 seconds remaining. See TIGERS, Page A9

G-P has already guaranteed another total-win improvement this season with their 18-2 overall mark (5-2 in District 3-AA) to this point. “It’s taken some time, but we’ve increased our win total each of the last three seasons,” said Placeres. “And the fans have picked up and the support has picked up. “It’s been great.” That’s been especially evident the past three home games against No.1 Fulton,
Pigeon Forge and No.9 Sevier County, each bringing capacity crowds to G-P and its small, aging gym. “It’s been a packed house each time,” said Placeres. “The kids love that stuff. The atmosphere is just crazy, and it’s a great, great experience for both teams playing in those games.” The Highlanders won two of those three games, the lone loss coming to the Falcons in a 60-54 heartbreaker that went down to the wire 12 days ago. Six days ago, G-P squeaked out a 70-61 win over upsetminded county rival Pigeon Forge (8-11, 1-7).

Hailey Tackett added six points to their efforts, and by quarter’s end SCHS had pushed ahead to a 39-30 lead. The Lady Cherokees weren’t going out quietly, though, and halfway through the final period they’d cut the Bearette lead to 41-36. Alli Gale, who hadn’t scored in the game’s first three quarters, dropped in a pair of three pointers on consecutive trips down the floor, and the Bearettes found themselves clinging to just a one point lead 43-42 with just about two minutes left. Trying to stall out the remaining clock, it almost backfired for Sevier County, as a turnover on an errant pass gave the ball back to South-Doyle with a chance to take the lead with 53 second left. haven’t played each other in a long time, but that used to be the rivalry back in the day because Pigeon Forge didn’t exist,” said Placeres. “You could see that in the crowd. “In the Pigeon Forge game, there was more student involvement. In the game against the Bears, there were more adults in the stands. It was a renewal of the rivalry, and it was great.” But now it’s back to work with a stretch of five straight district games before a regular-season finale rematch with the Bears at SCHS. The Highlanders have lost just twice this season, by eight points at home against district rival Carter (12-7, 4-5) in midDecember and against Fulton. G-P returned the favor on the Green Hornets home court with a 52-47 road win nine days ago, and the Blue and Gold have a shot at redemption against the Falcons on Friday, Feb. 25, in Knoxville. But the Highlanders don’t expect the rematch with Fulton to give them a shot at a firstplace district finish at the end of the regular season. Even if G-P wins the game, chances are the outcome will have little to do with determining the district tournament No.1 seed. In order to finish first, the Highlanders need the help of county rival Pigeon Forge Tigers

sical,” said Pigeon Forge coach Paul Reagan. “Sometimes we get a little satisfied with where we are and get a little comfortable. “It definitely happened again against Union County.” The Lady Tigers sideline was heated during the break before the final quarter. “I said, ‘girls, I hate fussing at you all the time,’” said Reagan. “And (senior leader) Danielle Rauhuff said, ‘if that’s what it takes, do it all the time coach.’” The Lady Tigers were revived to start the fourth frame, getting off to a fast start with a senior Emily Hurst layup on an assist from junior Kelsey
Brooks. Rauhuff followed with a quick drive to the hoop for the fourth point of what turned into a 17-0 run, propelling Pigeon Forge to the huge 25-point win. “Danielle realized that they needed (to be fussed at),” said Reagan. “I liked that, even though I don’t like (fussing at them).” Hurst, who plays basketball like a female Dennis Rodman, unusually led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 14 on Tuesday. “Good for Emily,” said Reagan. “She works hard, and she deserves that.” Brooks and freshman Cassidy Martin also had double digits with 11 and 10 points respectively. chitchcock@themountainpress.com

another typical night turned in by senior Justin Carter — who hit the game winner with just 2.3 seconds remaining in overtime — allowed the Tigers to overcome their poor effort from the line. “Andy, the sophomore, stepped up huge for us tonight,” said Shultz. “And I told them (in OT) that we want the last shot, and we want it in Justin’s
hands and it worked out well for us.” Carter finished the night with a team-leading 19 points, and Barnett added 18 in the win. Senior Ben Cave was the other Tiger in double digits with 11 ticks, Wil Crowe had six, Ryan Crow four and Billy Hewitt a charity shot in the win. Pigeon Forge next travels to district rival No.1 Fulton tonight.
(8-11, 1-7), who play tonight at Fulton. Already with two district losses, G-P will need that Orangeand-Black shocker tonight combined with Highlander wins over Union, Gibbs twice, Austin-East and not to mention the impending rematch with Fulton. And even if all that happens, G-P will still have to get lucky on a 50-50 draw from a hat for the No.1 tournament seed. “And you can’t depend on Fulton losing a district game,” said Placeres. “So our goal is to finish No.2, because that firstround bye in the district tournament is important.” Even a second-place finish in District 3-AA is an accomplishment because it’s the home of the back-to-back state champion Falcons. G-P has heard cries of foul from some in the community about having four top-notch players for the program this season, with four talented transfers in Jose Agosto, Marquise Wall, Morrease Barber and Garrett Buckner joining the Blue and Gold this season. “People think we have a lot of talent and it’s easier to win,” said Placeres. “But I disagree. We’re putting together kids who haven’t played together, and it’s been quite a challenge to meet the expectations. “It’s not easy, because you have a target on your back game in and game out.” chitchcock@themountainpress.com

Wife concerned for wellbeing of in-laws while living at condo
Zits
Blondie
Baby Blues
Beetle Bailey
Dear Annie: My inlaws live in a condominium about 35 miles from us. We visit them once a month. My father-in-law does not move around very well and is incontinent. He seldom leaves the condo. My motherin-law still walks, but only to the grocery store or doctor’s office. She is obviously beginning to slow down. We know there will come a day when they are no longer able to stay in the condo. However, they have no intention of moving into a retirement community. They say, “We don’t want to live in a place where there are only old people.” Meanwhile, they know no one in their condo building, where they have lived for 20 years, nor do they visit friends elsewhere. Several months ago, my in-laws bought a miniature poodle puppy that can only be described as neurotic. If anyone enters the condo, it will either hide or sit in a corner and growl. My father-in-law says the dog would get used to us if we visited more often, and once a month apparently isn’t often enough. Annie, we have three very active children, not to mention a house and chores and jobs to take care of. We visit the inlaws as often as possible, but we cannot see them every weekend simply so their dog can get to know us better. My husband says they are lonely and isolated, but I don’t think that is our responsibility. This is really beginning to become a problem. Please help. -- Had It in Maryland
Dear Maryland: Your husband is right -- your in-laws are lonely. You are not responsible for their unwillingness to reach out to neighbors and friends, but try to be a bit more compassionate. Since you are too busy to see them more often, suggest your husband visit his parents on his own. You also can look into caregiving services if their health interferes with their mobility. Dear Annie: This is for “Feeling the Pain in Ohio,” who has trouble shaking hands because of arthritis. Why not make life a little more multicultural and try the Asian custom of bowing? Not only will it avoid handshakes, but it could help break the ice and start an interesting conversation. -- Just a Thought from Georgia Dear Georgia: Thanks for the idea. Here are a few more: From Chicago: Try touching the back of the person’s extended hand with your fingertips as you say, “I’d love to shake your hand, but it’s too painful for me.” Santa Fe, N.M.: Place a pencil in your hand when greeting customers. This will delay the handshake and give you time to say, “I suffer from arthritis so please be gentle” before offering your hand. Tennessee: A simple solution is to wear a

noticeable wrist brace. Put it on the right hand. (If it’s on both hands, some folks will think it’s a fashion accessory.) It can work wonders in letting them know to shake this hand very gently. Sarasota, Fla.: I am a self-defense practitioner. When someone offers their hand, reach deep into their palm with your forefinger toward the base of their thumb. By doing this, the grip cannot be applied as forcefully. As an additional precaution, firmly hold their right wrist with your left hand. This will allow you to help disengage if it proves to be too painful. Louisville, Ky.: I take the person’s hand in both of mine and gently pat their hand, saying, “I have a sore hand today.” I keep my hands flat. California: Actually, it’s more of a refinement on your suggestion, which was pretty good -- to grab their wrist or arm instead of their hand. My idea is to use your left hand instead of your right. It will throw off their reflexes and slow them down just enough for you to win the grab contest.
