GATLINBURG — Yes, Virginia, that really was Santa Claus walking down the Parkway. And Father Christmas. St. Nick. Kris Kringle. A couple of camels, a couple of reindeer and a ... wolf? Well, part wolf. They were all part of the Holly and Shamrock Parade, which kicked off the Celebrate Santa Festival. Seeing a parade of Santas came a surprise for most of the people along the sidewalk, but they quickly got into the spirit. “It’s actually excieting,” said Erin Mundy, who was visiting from Charlotte, N.C., with friends. “We thought it was funny at first, but we decided to stay and now we’re actually excited.” Neal Cratzer was visiting from Jasper, Ala., with his family. He was happy that one of the “Santas” explained to his children why so many of them were in the same place. “He said ‘Remember, Santa’s got lots of helpers, but the real Santa’s here and it’s your job to figure out which one he is,’” Crazter said. “I thought that was nice.” Celebrate Santa brings together people who enjoy portraying Santa. It lasts until Tuesday and includes worshops and showcases for Santa portrayers — so be on the lookout for Santa this week in Sevier County. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

National Park Service Deputy Director Mickey Fearn presents Terry Maddox, executive director of the Great Smoky Mountains Association, with the 2010 James V. Murfin Award for Partnership Excellence.

Terry Maddox wins Murfin Award at public lands partners convention Submitted Report Terry Maddox, executive director of the Great Smoky Mountains Association, has won the James V. Murfin Award for Partnership Excellence. He received the award at the annual Association of Partners for Public Lands convention in San Diego. The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the partnership between the National Park Service and cooperating associations. Maddox has served the Great Smoky Mountains Association since February 1990. “With 20 years of cooperating association experience under his belt, the park’s longtime partner has made substantial contributions to the management and growth of the Association and is a respected advocate for the park in advancing our interpretation, education and visitor experience goals,” said Park Superintendent Dale Ditmanson. The association, generating revenue from management of bookstores and online services and memberships, provides cash to support educational and scientific programs such as Parks as Classrooms, elk restoration and hemlock woolly adelgid control. The nonprofit organization has grown from a small retailer of educational books produced by other publishers to a major producer of books and merchandise.

The creation of an in-house publications/graphic design program has significantly increased annual revenue — from over $350,000 in 1990 to almost $2 million in 2009, totaling about $22 million of support to the park. Several welcome centers host an association bookstore, furthering the park’s outreach. In connection with the park’s 75th Anniversary, Maddox established a relationship with Dollywood Theme Park. As a result, Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be represented at Dollywood in 2010 through a sales/information center housed at the theme park. A milestone project, funded by the association, is the construction of a new visitor center at Oconaluftee in the North Carolina area of the Park, with completion expected in spring 2011. Maddox is known for the association’s advances in Web site technology and the social networking applications available for Facebook, YouTube, iTunes and Twitter. The Web site experienced over three million page views in 2009. “It was only appropriate that Terry’s clever and effective business acumen be recognized by this prestigious award and was exampled in the memory of James V. Murfin who in the 1970s initiated the untapped potential of association publishing projects to reach major audiences and educate people about public lands,” said Ditmanson.

Democrats admit lacking health care votes By LIBBY QUAID Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON — The House’s chief Democratic headcounter said Sunday he hadn’t rounded up enough votes to pass President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul heading into a make-or-break week, even as the White House’s top political adviser said he was “absolutely confident” in its prospects. The administration gave signs of retreating on its demands that senators jettison special home-state deals sought by individual lawmakers that have angered the public. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs predicted

House passage this week, before Obama travels to Asia, a trip he postponed to push for the bill. “This is the week where we will have this important vote,” Gibbs said. “I do think this is the climactic week for health care reform.” Political strategist David Axelrod said Democrats will persuade enough lawmakers to vote “yes.” The House GOP leader, Ohio Rep. John Boehner, took up the challenge, acknowledging Republicans alone can’t stop the measure but pledging to do “everything we can to make it difficult for them, if not impossible, to pass the bill.” Republicans believe

they may get help from Democrats facing tough re-election campaigns. Axelrod said it will be a struggle, taking aim at insurance industry lobbyists who “have landed on Capitol Hill like locusts” and Republicans who see being on the losing side of the vote as a political victory. “I am absolutely confident that we are going to be successful. I believe that there is a sense of urgency on the part of members of Congress,” given recent news about insurance plan rate increases, Axelrod said. A dose of reality came from Rep. James Clyburn, the third-ranking House

Democrat and main vote counter. “No, we don’t have them as of this morning, but we’ve been working this thing all weekend,” said Clyburn, D-S.C. Clyburn said he was confident the measure would pass, echoing comments from Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Saturday. Axelrod also indicated the White House was backing down on an attempt to get senators to rid the legislation of a number of lawmakers’ special deals. Taking a new position, he said the White House only objects to state-specific arrangements, such as an increase in Medicaid funding for Nebraska, ridiculed as the “Cornhusker

Kickback.” That’s being cut, but provisions that could affect more than one state are OK, Axelrod said. That means deals sought by senators from Montana and Connecticut would be fine — even though Gibbs last week singled them out as items Obama wanted removed. There was resistance, however, from two powerful committee chairman, Democratic Sens. Max Baucus of Montana and Chris Dodd of Connecticut, and the White House has apparently backed down. “The principle that we want to apply is that are these: Are these applicable to all states? Even if they do not qualify now, would

they qualify under certain sets of circumstances?” Axelrod said. That’s the argument made by aides to Baucus and Dodd. The measure to give Medicare coverage to asbestos-sickened residents of Libby, Mont., could apply to other places where public health emergencies are declared — even though Libby is the only place where that’s happened so far. Dodd’s deal would leave it up to the health secretary to decide where to spend $100 million for construction of a hospital, though Dodd has made clear he hopes the University of Connecticut would be the beneficiary.

Northeast storm leaves half-million without power ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Strong winds and heavy rain pounded parts of the Northeast on Saturday, knocking out power to more than a half-million homes and businesses and stranding about 500 passengers on a New York-bound train for more than six hours. The New Jersey Transit train became stuck on the tracks more than halfway through its trek from Trenton to New York City along the Northeast Corridor line, spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett said. A diesel engine would pull the train to the Rahway station, where buses would meet the passengers and take them to Newark Penn Station, Hackett said. Passengers were stuck on the train for six to seven hours Saturday, Chapter 7 •

spokesman Dan Stessel said. It was the second time in two weeks that more than 500,000 homes and businesses in the Northeast were left in the dark after a powerful storm. Outages stopped Amtrak service between Philadelphia and New York on Saturday, while gusting winds downed trees and power lines throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Service was restored on two of four tracks along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor by early Sunday, spokesman Cliff Cole said. Lois Glassman, 62, of Manhattan boarded an Amtrak Acela train in Washington D.C. at around 4 p.m. Saturday. The train traveled seamlessly through Philadelphia but slowed out-

State readies for Next Generation 911 Associated Press The Tennessee E m e r g e n c y Communications Board is aiming for the technology to make local emergency centers across the state ready for Next Generation 911 beginning in early 2011. To help make NG-911 a reality, the state communications board will spread $25 million across the state to fund technology upgrades at local E-911 centers. The board collects millions of dollars annually

in 911 cell phone tariffs and redistributes those funds to local E-911 centers through grants and population formulas. “We need NG-911 to handle the emerging technologies like Internet phone service and the many capabilities of today’s cell phones,” said Lynn Questell, executive director of the board. NG-911 involves developing a digital wireless emergency network that uses Internet protocol and is supported by fiber optics statewide. Not only does the technology provide quicker

emergency responses, it also enables interactivity between emergency service providers and those needing the services. NG-911 will offer automatic crash notification to E-911 centers on cars equipped with the technology and will allow texting between the public and E-911 centers. It also will allow various emergency agencies to talk to one another and allows E-911 centers across the state to coordinate efforts. The technology also can let different states communicate in emergencies.

commentary

No place quite like Key West I woke up in Key West last week. When I looked out of my condo window I saw a most beautiful blue ocean with Palm trees everywhere and coastal seabirds soaring through the breeze. I got in late the night before and couldn’t see any of the beauty until the morning. I actually heard the ocean that morning before daylight as the sound echoed through the windows and made me realize that I wasn’t in the mountains anymore. As the sun rose on the East end of the island, everything became clearer; I was in paradise. They actually have that printed on their city vehicles: Protecting Pardise. This was my first trip to the Keys and I love them. It’s my understanding that many of our county residents also make the trip on occasion. I met a family many years ago in Gatlinburg, when I first arrived, that I got to know through work. They were from Florida and moved back to Marathon (one of the cities in the Keys) back in 2001 after having a business in Gatlinburg for 15 years. They opened a new one here in the Keys which is where I found them once more. It was a nice reunion after so many years. The island people here — well, many of them — have that ’60s hippy look going on. Apparently it never goes out of style. I never could get an accurate answer as to how many people live on the island because everyone gave me a different number. The population grows at spring break and for other festivals. It seems they have a festival every month. I won’t tell you about the one in October. In our Hyatt condo parking lot was a car with Blount County licence plates; wonder who that was. Actually, I saw several other Tennessee car tags from various other counties here on vacation as well. One of the ways to get information about what you might want to write about or research is to visit the local watering hole — that would be the tavern or bar. It’s where you get the word on the street, as they say. One of those places where I enjoyed a pint was Captain Tony’s. Captain Tony’s at one time was called Sloppy Joe’s. This place used to house the city morgue, and also the place where they hung convicted prisoners. As a matter of fact, the building was built around the hanging tree which is in the middle of the bar and sticking through the roof. The local ordinance stipulated that the tree could never be cut down or destroyed. Well, I found out a lot of information about Key West, and that Ernest Hemingway had a few pints of his own in this very same establishment. The most prolific writer in American literature had spent about 12 years in Key West and owned a home there in the 1930s, which I visited twice. They have turned his home into a museum. I swear you could feel him in the rooms as you passed through and stood and walked in the places where he wrote some of his classic novels. Some people can’t stand the beach life, while others like it only on vacation, and are then ready to come home after a week or so. I, on the other hand, love the beach life and hate to leave at the end of my stay. I think it may be due to the fact that I got a late start in life with going to the beach and never had the opportunity as a child. I seem to want to make up for lost time. While talking to the locals in Key West, I found out that they were really not native born; they were transplants like some of us here in Sevier County, including me. After a certain time period goes by though, you’re a local by other visitor standards. I was amazed by the number of TLs (transplanted locals) I had been talking to. I have to disagree with the old notion about the grass being greener on the other side: sometimes it is. I was hoping to run into Jimmy Buffett while down there, but no such luck. I did see a wrist bracelet with the initials WWJBD. (What Would Jimmy Buffett Do). I’ll close with these words of Buffett: “The weather is here, wish you were beautiful.” — Dan M. Smith is a Cincinnati native and Gatlinburg resident. He is the author of the forthcoming book “So Far from Forfar.” His son is serving in the Air Force. E-mail to dan0729@yahoo.com.

Not a gamble at all

Las Vegas Night a fun evening and a very worthy cause Whoever thought that playing real Las Vegas type games with play money could be so much fun? And whoever thought such an evening could be so beneficial to our local health care providers. The 17th annual Las Vegas Night fundraiser for the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation is set for Saturday night at Music Road Convention Center in Pigeon Forge. It’s an evening of play gambling, a meal, an auction, dancing and live music. And this year the fundraiser will celebrate the completion of a $10 million community campaign. When Covenant Health, owner of Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center, announced plans to build a new campus across the street, the Thomas Foundation stepped up to help the cause. The foundation set its sights on raising money to pay

for items not funded by Covenant on the new campus. We are all proud of LeConte Medical Center, as fine a hospital facility as you’ll see in this state. But the extras, the things Covenant couldn’t pay for right away, are the things the foundation sought to provide. For example, newly generated funds will be used to purchase equipment needed to perform on-site fetal fibronectin screenings. This screening test is performed on pre-term labor patients who come into the medical center having contractions. The results of the screening test help physicians identify patients at risk for early delivery. Tests currently are sent to a Knoxville lab for interpretation, and the new equipment will allow tests to be evaluated at LeConte Medical Center. Many people made donations to

come up to $10 million. Local government, local businesses and individuals did their part, either with direct donations or by attending the fundraisers hosted by the foundation, such as Las Vegas Night and the summer dress-up ball in Gatlinburg. Your $50 ticket to Las Vegas Night helps the foundation continue its work of supporting health-related agencies in our community. For your ticket you’ll get some guaranteed entertainment, and a chance to pay craps, roulette and 21 without fear of breaking the law. Everyone who attends gets some play money to start with, and then you can gamble it in any way you’d like. Support the foundation. Support medical care at LeConte. Support the addition of equipment and services ahead of schedule. To attend Las Vegas Night, call 446-9628.

Wildcat Wall too much for MSU Fantastic Kentucky frosh lights it up in overtime By TERESA M. WALKER AP Sports Writer

Associated Press

Kentucky guard John Wall (11) is congratulated by teammates Perry Stevenson and Josh Harrellson, top left, after they defeated Mississippi State 75-74 in overtime to win the championship game at the NCAA college basketball Southeastern Conference tournament on Sunday in Nashville.

NASHVILLE — John Calipari only had questions once he and his Kentucky Wildcats finished celebrating their Southeastern Conference tournament championship. “How did we win this game? How did we go to overtime? I don’t know,” Calipari said. Credit his fantastic freshmen who scored to get them to overtime and then won the game, even if they celebrated a little prematurely. John Wall scored seven of his 15 points in overtime, and No. 2 Kentucky rallied from five down with 2:28 left in regulation to beat Mississippi State 75-74 on Sunday. The Wildcats rewarded their faithful by adding their 26th SEC tournament championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament to their 44th regular season title. Two down, one to go? That might be why the Wildcats ran around the arena waving and yelling with their fans without ever cutting down a net. “We will cut down nets,” Calipari promised. “It’s just not the SEC tournament nets. Maybe hopefully in the NCAA tournament somewhere, but I think these guys they have a big picture. ... This is a game we should’ve lost.” The Wildcats (32-2) blew earlier chances with freshmen Wall and DeMarcus Cousins missing free throws and making youthful mistakes. But they came through over the defending tourney champs as Cousins’ layup off Wall’s missed 3-pointer from the right corner beat the regulation buzzer to give them some extra time. Wall did miscalculate. He thought the Wildcats had won on Cousins’ shot and tackled the 6-foot-11, 270pound forward to the court near the press table, celebrating a wee bit early. “I was so excited,” Wall said. “When I went to the bench, Coach said, ‘It’s overtime.’ I was like, ‘Whew.’ I was tired. I knew we fought hard. I didn’t play a great game, but I did a great job of leading my team.” Cousins knew he had forced overtime even if his teammates didn’t as they followed Wall’s lead and swarmed him on the floor. “So I got kind of beat up at the end thanks to John,” Cousins said with a smile. Now Kentucky can celebrate its first SEC tournament title since 2004, ending an interminable drought for their fans who now expect another national championship. Mississippi State (23-11) lost for the second time to the Wildcats this season after leading late in regulation. The Bulldogs blew a seven-point lead on Feb. 16, See KENTUCKY, Page A9

An injury hurts as much as a loss in the days before the brackets are drawn up for March Madness. Syracuse endured both and will have to rack up some major frequent flier miles to make a run to the Final Four. Kansas, Kentucky and Duke won their conference tournaments and the top seeding that goes with it when the selection committee rolled out its 65-team bracket Sunday. Coach Bruce Pearl’s 25-8 University of Tennessee Volunteers, who entertained notions of being a No. 3 seed before being routed by Kentucky in the SEC Tournament semifinals, found themselves falling all the way to a No. 6 seed and will play 11th-seed San Diego State in Providence on Thursday. Two other Tennessee teams also made the tournament. Vanderbilt, 24-8, is a No. 4 seed and will play Murray State in San Jose, Calif., on Thursday, while East Tennessee State, 20-14, figures to likely be a oneand-out, playing top-seeded Kentucky. The Orangemen, meanwhile, were ranked fourth of the four No. 1 seeds and sent West after losing early in the Big East tournament after center Arinze Onuaku injured his right quadriceps. Their road to the Final Four, set for April 3-5 in Indianapolis, will have to go through Salt Lake City. No team has lost its first game in a conference tournament and gone on to win the national title. “We’re proud to be a No. 1 seed,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “This team has worked extremely hard, been consistent all year. Obviously, the tournament is always going to be challenging. It’ll be challenging right off the bat.” America’s largest, three-week office pool starts getting sorted out Tuesday with an opening-round game between Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Winthrop. The tournament goes into full swing Thursday, with Kansas the No. 1 seed. The Big East led the field with eight teams, which tied its own record and is the third time the conference has put that many teams in the tournament. But winning the toughest conference’s regular-season title wasn’t the accomplishment it might have been for Syracuse. The Orangemen (28-4) lost to Georgetown in the Big East tournament quarterfinals. BRIEFS Sounds want downtown stadium

NASHVILLE (AP) — The minor league Nashville Sounds baseball team is pushing for a new downtown ball park, three years after the a deal to build a facility fell apart. The Nashville Tennessean reports that the Triple-A team’s new ownership have brought on Nashville real estate attorney Tom White, Seigenthaler Public Relations and Hastings Architecture, which already has renderings of a new ballpark to be located at the riverfront Thermal Transfer Plant site. The team currently plays in 32-year-old Greer Stadium, which underwent a renovation after MFP Baseball bought the Sounds in 2008. The team’s previous ownership had a $40 million deal for a new ball park in place in 2007, but that agreement fell apart.

Browns trade QB Brady Quinn

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have traded quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos for fullback Peyton Hillis and a 2011 draft pick. The teams announced the trade Sunday and said the deal is pending physicals. Quinn’s departure comes one day after the Browns agreed to terms with free agent Jake Delhomme on a two-year contract. Quinn went 3-9 in 12 starts for Cleveland, which acquired him in the first round of the 2007 draft.

Prospect faces brain surgery

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Jon Lester isn’t making comparisons between his cancer battle four years ago and Red Sox prospect Ryan Westmoreland’s recent brain diagnosis. Boston announced Saturday that the 19-year-old outfielder will have surgery Tuesday for a cavernous malformation in his brain. “I don’t know if you can compare what (I) went through to that, Lester said Sunday. “I mean you’re talking about a brain, it’s a little different situation. He’s definitely in a good organization as far as doctors and people that’ll take care of him. As far as that goes, we got a lot of good resources here. Lester was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma in August 2006 during his first majorleague season. The pitcher has been cancer-free since his treatment that year. Westmoreland was recognized as the best prospect in the Red Sox system by Baseball America this offseason. A cavernous malformation is a cluster of abnormal or dilated blood vessels that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms can include bleeding in the brain, seizures and headaches.

Power wins IndyCar opener SAO PAULO (AP) — Will Power made a late overtaking move to take the lead from Ryan Hunter-Reay to win the rain-shortened IndyCar season opener on the streets of Sao Paulo on Sunday. The Australian passed the American with three laps to go, clinching the inaugural Sao Paulo Indy 300 for his second career victory. Power crossed the line 1.858 seconds ahead of Hunter-Reay when the race ended at the two-hour time limit with only 61 of the 75 scheduled laps completed. The race had to be redflagged near its halfway point after heavy rains made track conditions unsafe, marking another setback for the track which was initially being hailed as one of the highlights of the

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Kyle Singler scored 20 points and Jon Scheyer hit a critical 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to help No. 4 Duke beat Georgia Tech 65-61 in Sunday’s Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship game. Scheyer finished with 16 points for the top-seeded Blue Devils (29-5), who let an 11-point lead with 6 minutes slip all the way to one before Scheyer’s big shot. Nolan Smith also had 16 points to help Duke earn a league-record 18th tournament title, breaking a tie with rival North Carolina. In a tournament filled with upsets, it took a gritty effort from Duke’s highscoring “Big Three to hold off a determined comeback from the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets (22-12),

season but faced problems throughout the weekend. Danica Patrick lost control of her car as it started raining, finishing 15th. Power, whose other victory was last year in Edmonton, got out of his car and celebrated with the thousands of fans packing the grandstands of the stadium-like Sambadrome where the race took place.

and lost that game 81-75 in overtime. “Any person watching that game, how could you not be just absolutely amazed what these guys did against one of the most talented teams in the country? Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said. “We had our opportunities to close it out. That’s part of the game. ... And I can promise you, there’s not one ounce left in them. This time, the Bulldogs led 62-57 on Ravern Johnson’s 3 with 2:28 left. That set up a furious finish to a game that had gone back and forth from the opening tip. Barry Stewart, a senior from nearby Shelbyville, Tenn., hit both free throws with 8.2 seconds left to push the Bulldogs ’lead to 64-61. He fouled out, sending Eric Bledsoe to the free throw line. He hit the first, missed the second and Wall’s 3-point attempt was well short. But Cousins put it back, getting the shot off before the buzzer. Officials immediately signaled that the shot counted, and Wall and Cousins celebrated with their teammates piling on as if they had won. They finally went back to the bench while officials reviewed the play.

Ohio State tops Minnesota in Big 10 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Evan Turner didn’t need any lategame heroics on Sunday. When it appeared there was nothing more he could do to make his Big Ten tournament performance better, the junior had 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 5 Ohio State over Minnesota 90-61 on Sunday in the championship game. Turner hit a 37-foot shot at the buzzer to beat Michigan in the quarterfinals, then scored 12 of his 31 points after regulation in a double-overtime win over Illinois in the semifinals. On Sunday, he set the tournament record for points in a championship game.

who were trying to become the first team in tournament history to win four games in four days. Duke has won nine of the past 12 ACC tournaments and was in prime position to grab a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Freshman Derrick Favors had 22 points and

11 rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets, who were trying to become the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament. Georgia Tech fell behind 8-0 and trailed 52-41 after Scheyer’s 3-pointer with 6:19 to play. But the Yellow Jackets ran off nine straight points to get within 60-59 on Favors’

“Time never ran out seemed like, Stewart said of the end of regulation. “Longest 4.9 seconds of my life. As the Bulldogs slumped and Kentucky celebrated, overtime seemed destined to go the Wildcats’ way. Even then, it wasn’t easy. Bledsoe’s jumper put them ahead to stay at 71-69 with 1:20 left, and Wall’s lone 3-pointer of the game pushed it to 74-71 with 26 seconds remaining. Cousins hit two free throws with 5 seconds to go that wound up the winning margin as Riley Benock hit a 3 just before the buzzer to start the celebration fans had been waiting for since Calipari was hired last spring. It was the first time since 1952 that the SEC championship had been decided by one point. Bledsoe, another member of Calipari’s first recruiting class, finished with 18 points. Patrick Patterson had 15, and Cousins finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson scored 20 points to lead Mississippi State. Jarvis Varnado added 18 and spent much of the overtime upset at the lack of foul calls as he tried to drive to the basket. Dee Bost had 16 points,

and Stewart added 11 points and 10 rebounds. “That’s what you’re going to get when you play against Kentucky, Varnado said. “They’ve got some big guys (Daniel) Orton, Patterson and Cousins. Mississippi State came to this event for a second straight

dunk with 47.9 seconds left. But Scheyer — who was just 1 of 8 from behind the arc to that point — lost Glen Rice Jr. around a screen and swished a 3 from the right side to push the lead back to four points. Then, after a driving basket from Iman Shumpert, Singler knocked down two free throws with 9 seconds left to make it a two-possession game and essentially seal the victory. It was fitting that Duke punctuated the game at the free throw line. The Blue Devils made 24 of 28 free throws, including 21 of 23 in the second half to offset a 6-of-22 (27 percent) shooting performance after the break and keep the Yellow Jackets in catch-up mode almost all game.

year knowing the best — and likely only — way of earning an NCAA tournament trip was by winning the automatic berth. The Bulldogs did it last year by winning four games in four days, and this season they had a bye to keep them even more rested for the final.

Advice

Sister hurt because sister won’t forgive her for dating ex boyfriend

Zits

Blondie

Baby Blues

Beetle Bailey

Dear Annie: Six years ago, my sister’s exboyfriend found out I was divorced. He called and invited me for a drink. I accepted with some reluctance, as I didn’t think my sister would approve, but I needed some lighthearted company after the dark days surrounding the end of my marriage. “Jim” and I had a nice time and began seeing each other. My sister dated Jim for eight years before they split up. At the time I began seeing him, she had been happily married to a wonderful man for quite a few years. After Jim and I had been dating for a couple of weeks, I tried to tell my sister, but she immediately shut me up and refused to discuss it. I wrote an e-mail explaining the situation and my feelings, but she didn’t reply. Jim, along with my sister’s friends and relatives, all agreed she would get over it in time, but she hasn’t. She has not spoken to me in six years. I have sent her Christmas cards, get-well cards, etc. One birthday card came back marked “Return to Sender.” My father once asked her why she had a problem with me, and she told him she didn’t. Annie, why can’t she get over this? -- Crying in California Dear Crying: We suspect that while your sister was dating Jim, she thought he had “a thing” for you. (And if she didn’t then, she certainly does now.) There is the additional possibility that she might not be able to deal with seeing him at family functions. Her refusal to deal with it shows a lack of maturity, and she may not want to

consider that she is also jealous. However, you knew dating her ex was going to cause a problem and you did it anyway. Try apologizing for your lack of sensitivity. Tell her you miss her, and ask for another chance. You might also see if a family member can intercede on your behalf and broker a truce. Dear Annie: My brother and sister, both in their 60s, have decided to move into a small apartment together. I find this inappropriate, and I told my brother it doesn’t look right. He disagreed. Am I wrong? -- Bad Move Dear Bad Move: Many siblings who are single choose to live together in order to share expenses with someone they are comfortable with. We assume they aren’t sharing a bedroom, so unless something else is going on, we wouldn’t worry about it. It only becomes a problem if one sibling becomes involved with a person who objects. At that point, they can rethink the arrangement. Dear Annie: You told “Tennessee” to let sleeping dogs lie when it came to getting a DNA sample from a grown daughter he suspected wasn’t his. I was adopted as a baby and couldn’t find peace until I located my birth parents. “Tennessee” is already being eaten up by this secret, or he wouldn’t have written you. And if the difference in appear-

ance is so noticeable, the daughter is not oblivious. The secret could be eating her up, too. This is old-school thinking -- that if you don’t tell the child the truth, they will not suffer. Children feel the truth, and when they are lied to or the truth is hidden, they suffer. The message she needs to hear is: “You are the product of your mother’s affair, and I love you as much as my other children.” What a gift that would be for both of them. Even if she turns out to be his biological daughter, being honest and loving can only bring them closer by putting old doubts to rest. -- Holliston, Mass. Dear Holliston: Most adopted children know they are adopted. This girl believes “Tennessee” is her biological father. Asking for a DNA test would turn her world upside-down, and there’s no way to know whether and how much it would hurt their relationship. Your heart is in the right place, but if Dad doesn’t plan to tell her regardless of the DNA results, we say leave it alone.
